Fast track to success! Olaf Vögele, responsible editor of SONNENSCHUTZWELT

Daniel Mund, Editor-in-chief of GLASWELT

Who will be coming to the R+T? Vögele: All the players in the solar protection business are already champing at the bit, because the R+T will be opening its doors in a few days. The industry has been preparing for this time for three years, and has geared up its innovation cycles accordingly; as a result, we will certainly get to see some brand-new innovations from the roller shutter and solar protection sector in Stuttgart.

Dialogue with our customers is the basis for good service and the inspiration for innovative, tailor-made products. You can experience our high quality standards ”Made in Germany“ at the world-leading R+T trade fair in Stuttgart. We look forward to seeing you!

Mund: However, it is not just visitors from the solar protection segment who will be coming to Stuttgart, but also those whose job is to communicate the product to end-users more and more frequently: The window builders. After all, they are the fabricators of the construction elements on the building site: They assemble a good, individually tailored product for the customer with the appropriate glass and corresponding solar protection. Has the solar protection business adjusted to this paradigm shift? Vögele: In part. There is the typical 20 percent of a group which has recognised very quickly that a roller shutter and solar protection company also needs to have windows in its repertoire. If we similarly consider the window builders as a customer group amongst the manufacturers of roller shutters and solar protection, it is possible to see that they are clearly in the majority here. Seen like this, the roller shutter and solar protection trade is on the right track, but still has some way to go. Will the window builders take business away from roller shutter builders in future? Mund: The boundaries between the sectors are certainly becoming more and more fluid, that is clear. Good roller shutter builders will include windows in their range of products, and window builders have always had to keep their eye on the roller shutter box. Why shouldn't they also offer Venetian blinds, awnings and the rest? In addition, the networkers stand to benefit: After all, consulting expertise is called for more than ever before. If the customer is given the good feeling that his or her potential supplier knows the job and is also backed up by expert partners, then the customer will be willing to pay for this. The partners in trade will thus reach their (order) target not by working against one another, but together. Vögele: You have hit the nail on the head; I think that in 5 to 10 years, the sectors will have more or less merged together, meaning that not only networking but also knowledge will be in great demand. The products are becoming more functional and, above all, easier to install. This means the focus is moving towards consulting in the context of the building envelope. I am certainly curious to see what will be the end result. Have you got a favourite? Mund: Indeed I do, but I am going to keep my opinion to myself in this regard. Could I say something else about the upcoming anniversary R+T? I'm always impressed to see how content the R+T business is with the Stuttgart exhibition centre – indeed, that was also the case on the old exhibition site. This year too, it ought to be the same and I will be greeting all guests from far and near with a hearty "Grüß Gott" (the local greeting in the Swabian region of south-west Germany). Maybe our paths will cross at the exhibition site, or you can visit us on the stand at the eastern entrance (EO/342). Alternatively, we might meet on the Thursday of the show for the Gentner Forum, also at the eastern entrance.

SONNENSCHUTZWELT Conversation

Interview with the project manager of R+T, Sebastian Schmid

Where are you travelling to next, Mr. R+T? As well as the R+T Stuttgart which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2015, there are also successful spin-off shows that have existed since 2005 and establish themselves gradually in Shanghai, Istanbul and Melbourne. The motto of the R+T has thus become “Think global – meet us worldwide”. In advance of the R+T Stuttgart, we talked to the project manager, Sebastian Schmid, who has been largely responsible for the fate of the world's leading show since 2008. sONNENSCHUTZwelt  – The pulse rate of the industry is getting faster and faster shortly before the show. What is the situation like for you? Sebastian Schmid – That is correct. In the runup to the show, the level of excitement increases amongst us as well. With an experienced team behind me, which has been helping me with the show since 2009, we are well prepared and are looking forward to the opening. At this point, I'd also rather like to take a back seat. Melanie Brenner, Astrid Ehm, Ina Fröhlich and Anne-Kathrin Müller will make sure that I don't get overstressed. The decisions by sONNENSCHUTZwelt  –  Markilux and Weinor not to attend created quite a stir. Is there a reason for this? Schmid – Basically, it must be said that we regret it greatly of course. But when considering the history of the R+T and other comparable shows, it is by no means unusual for companies to change their strategy from time to time. So it is all the more pleasing that Markilux, for example, has decided to make a comeback even before the R+T 2015. I would not say that there are any negative effects on the coming event. A large number of well-known awning manufacturers will be showing their products at the R+T, and we have also been able to fill the vacant spaces with well-

known manufacturers. Visitors will be able to look forward to a wide variety and in 2015, they will find more exhibitors in Stuttgart than ever before. As the world's leading show, we of course aim to attract all leading companies, and we are always talking to the industry. sONNENSCHUTZwelt  – The trade press is concentrating on the R+T both on its title pag es and in the text. What can visitors to Stuttgart expect? Schmid – The list is long, and as with the previous events, 2015 will also provide a high-quality supporting programme. There will be something there for everyone, so that the activities of the exhibitors will be sensibly complemented. Above all, we can see that building automation will develop into a central topic of the R+T. We intend to promote this with the Gentner Forum dealing with the topic of Smart Home. We are also providing events for architects. Alongside the "Art of Planning", there is also the "GID day" specifically for interior architects, dealing with the topic of internal solar protection. sONNENSCHUTZwelt  – Once the show fin ishes, of course, you will start planning the next one. What is on the agenda for next time?

As well as the R+T Stuttgart which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2015, there are now also successful spin-off shows in Shanghai, Istanbul and Melbourne.

6

006_007_SSW_2015_E14A07_INTERVIEW_SCHMID 6

Since 2008, project manager Sebastian Schmid has been chiefly responsible for the fate of the R+T.

Schmid – There will be two more R+Ts taking place in 2015. In addition to the firmly established R+T Asia to be held from 24 – 26 March in Shanghai, which is now the eleventh time, there is also another on 12 – 15 November, when we go back to Istanbul. Following the good start in 2013, we will have a German Pavilion available for the first time this year, thereby providing significant support for German companies. The location on the Bosporus has proven to be a good choice, because this puts us at one of the major hubs of the Arab world. sONNENSCHUTZwelt  –  In Hall 10, there should be additional space of just under 15,000 m2 available for exhibitors in 2018. Will there be expansions in the product portfolio of the R+T? Schmid – Primarily, the same industry spectrum will be presented in 2018 as well. As you will expect, we are in close dialogue with our exhibitors and the supervisory board of the exhibition centre, as part of which we are carefully considering decisions regarding the product portfolio. The objective must be to offer even more attractive content for the show visitors and to ensure that the R+T features the most important topics in the industry. — The interview was conducted by SONNEN SCHUTZWELT editor, Olaf Vögele

After seven years of successful work, CEO Markus Roth is leaving the drive and control manufacturer from Rhede at his own request in order to pursue a different career path. He is replaced by Ralf Kern, who was appointed as a new and additional CEO by the partners. Kern has been with the company for eight years and is familiar with Rademacher's business; he will continue to function as the technical backbone of Rademacher in his new function. The topic of finance and business administration will be left in the safe hands of Johannes Göllmann. Joachim Göddertz will be the interim CEO.

The entrepreneur days were held as promised to make up for the lack of presence at the coming R+T show, featuring special measures and events for the company's customers. At a total of seven events in Germany and Austria, referred to as the top team entrepreneur days, the Cologne manufacturer presented new marketing ideas for 2015. Weinor decided not to participate in the show in order to free up resources for important long-term projects that are intended to delivery significant benefits to its trade partners, for example the new showroom in Cologne and the entrepreneur days. "The decision to focus on other matters this time has been entirely correct. We won't rush

into a decision about participating in a future show in 2018. First of all, we will take a look at the upcoming show and then consider at our leisure how to proceed with the R+T 2018," says CEO Thilo Weiermann casually. Discussions, exchange of ideas and experience – and last but not least spending time together – these were all the objectives of the top team entrepreneur days. This partner concept has existed for 17 years – now was the time to plot a new course. The entrepreneur day was held for the first time, but should take place regularly in future and assist the top partners in their long-term strategic marketing measures.

Takeover of Tenbrink

Lots going on at Alulux With a change on the top floor, takeover of Tenbrink and the closure of the Westendorf site, there is plenty going on in the Verl-based company shortly before the R+T. By taking various measures, Alulux intends to grow organically in all markets with a clear orientation, according to CEO Thomas Knobloch. After 20 years at the helm of Alulux, Hans-Josef Katzwinkel is leaving the company in August 2015. The new management team around CEO Thomas Knobloch will in future be formed from Hans-Georg Fischedick and sales director, Gregor Biermann. Maarten Veen, who is also active as director of finances at the Group parent CRH Shutters & Awnings in the Netherlands, will supplement the team in the area of finance/controlling/IT, and will thus also be integrated into the company management. Tenbrink Rollladensysteme from Ahaus has existed since 1989. Its takeover by Alulux in January 2015, with the help of CRH, means that Alulux is incorporating one of the largest German PVC shutter box producers into its product portfolio; in future, Alulux's PVC roller shutter centre of competence will be formed here. Furthermore, at the end of 2014 the Westendorf site taken over from Perfecta Nova in January 2014 was closed and roller shutter production transferred to the Alulux site in Burgbernheim. The 15,000 front-mounted roller shutter elements previously produced in Burgbernheim are additionally to be produced at the headquarters plant in Verl, thereby optimising production capacity utilisation in Verl. The company targets have been discussed within the management team, and are formulated as follows by Thomas Knobloch: "To achieve our targeted growth, we have not only permanently expanded our product portfolio but also reorientated our national sales team over the past two years under the management of Gregor Biermann, reduced the average age of the team and cut its numbers. We have pursued the same criteria internationally as well."

Landesmesse Stuttgart: a place for innovations and the home of R+T, leading world trade fair for roller shutters, doors/gates and sun protection systems. Within the space of 50 years, R+T has become more than just a trade fair. Impressive trade fair presentations, surprising product premières and a varied accompanying programme: visitors can look forward to this at R+T 2015. Exhibitors set the tone and determine the innovation cycle: they develop product innovations in a three-year cycle in order to present them to international trade visitors at R+T. Practically no other trade fair enjoys this status. In 2012 almost 60,000 trade visitors from 125 countries flocked to Stuttgart. When around 800 exhibitors, including important world market leaders, meet at R+T, premières are pre-programmed. Products about which even industry experts now only have vague ideas, the latest technical achievements and trends which conquer the market straight after the trade fair: R+T 2015 promises to contain all of this. The exhibition stands pulsate with life and the numerous events in the accompanying programme are true crowd-pullers. In 2012 ”The Art of Planning – Forum on Architecture and Integral Planning“ attracted around 1,500 architects and planners right away. It will now be continued. Similar crowds are anticipated at the première of the GID Day, the ”German Interior Designers‘ Day“. However, established R+T highlights such as the BVT Doors/Gates Forum, the presentation of the 2015 Innovation Prize and the craftsmen‘s competition will also naturally take place. In its anniversary year R+T will again be a platform which the industry must definitely attend.

SHOW OVERVIEW

SERVICE

 YEARS R+T REVEAL SUCCESSFUL DEVELOPMENT

The world meets at the R+T For  years, the R+T has been the innovation hub and provided impulses for the entire sector, always with its finger on the pulse of events. The plan for  includes attributes such as greater energy efficiency, convenience and security in handling. Visitors will be able to look forward to what the exhibitors will be presenting at the world's leading show in the area of roller shutters, doors and solar protection.

_

The R was significantly appreciated by the exhibitors as the first specialist show for roller shutters.  companies took part in the première back then at the exhibition centre in the Killesberg district of Stuttgart, in order to present product innovations and progressive solutions for roller shutters and solar protection. At the time, however, none of the participants suspected that the R would develop into the world's leading show for these topics. At the première of the R, the show occupied one hall on the Stuttgart exhibition centre premises. However, even this first event was evaluated as a success by the exhibitors from eight countries and by visitors. At the time, the focus was on a targeted exchange of specialist knowledge through personal contact at the show. This concept bore fruit, because all of the companies surveyed at the time committed to taking part in the next international roller shutter exhibition again.



012_015_SSW_2015_E14A03_RT 12

Significant increases The target for  has been clearly defined: The R+T in February should once again become a successful world show for roller shutters, doors and solar protection with a varied and interesting supporting programme individually tailored to the public, says project manager Sebastian Schmid, explaining his plans. "For us,  years of the R+T in Stuttgart represents a particular obligation, and it will be a very special anniversary for our R+T family," says Schmid. At the time, the year  proved to be decisive for the further development of the world's leading show, because it was the first time that the R+T broke the , mark for visitor numbers. An impressive , specialist visitors from  countries came to the Stuttgart exhibition site in Killesberg. The millennium show proved to be outstanding in other figures also, because  percent of the exhibitors displayed innovations specifically developed for GLASWELT

The R+T in Stuttgart can be observed by visitors in a clear layout using the topic structure. The exhibition centre is easy to reach by car, aeroplane or train, and provides visitors with an area of more than , m² in nine exhibition halls for their tour of the show.

the R+T. For , the show has attracted  exhibitors from  countries, distributed over exhibition halls covering   m². This means the last available space on the existing exhibition premises has been used up in order to offer as many companies as possible on the waiting list the opportunity to exhibit at the world's leading show. It was really necessary to dig deep in order to accommodate the wide range of enquiries. This is why the industry is looking forward greatly to the announced new building of Hall  which should once again provide some elbow room for accommodating the positive developments in the sector. As a result, the necessary space should be created for accommodating the companies that have already registered for the first time or re-registered for the R+T . In addition, space should also be created for new topic areas which will result in the context of roller shutters and solar protection. www.glaswelt.de

Perfect access possibilities No other exhibition centre in Germany is as well connected as the Stuttgart exhibition centre. The show halls can really be accessed on foot by the visitors, and it makes no difference whether they arrive by car, aeroplane or train. The ICE train connection from Stuttgart central station and the nearby airport also provide visitors for whom time is precious with an extremely appealing opportunity to visit the exhibition and plan their arrival and departure on the same day, nevertheless allowing them to enjoy a full day at the exhibition. The optimum visit time for the R+T is certainly two or three days, if you intend to find out in detail what is going on. However, in this case too, the excellent transport connections provide an opportunity to visit the » 

Innovation is rewarded In , the R+T was supplemented with an attraction and a decisive source of inspiration for inventive innovations: the R+T innovation prize. Over the years, it has become a prized award for more and more exhibitors, enjoying significant resonance in the media and, in this anniversary year of the R+T, it is being awarded for the ninth time. The advance of digitalisation and the wide variety of opportunities for online registration meant that in  it was possible for international exhibitors to participate in the competition for the first time. For some time now, exhibitors had been able to submit their innovation using a straightforward digital method without worrying about their ideas being disclosed to the public too soon. As a result, the prize has gradually increased in significance, which is also reflected by the number of submissions which by now exceeds the hundred mark. During the first years, the panel of judges exclusively comprised members of the associations, whereas since  it has been composed of specialists, journalists and architects from the industry. The R+T innovation prize is awarded jointly by the German Federal Association of Roller Shutters and Solar Protection e.V., the BVT – Federal Doors' Association, the Industrial Association of Technical Textiles – Roller Shutters – Solar Protection e.V. and the Stuttgart Exhibition Centre. The award takes account of general market trends and special target groups by means of special prizes, e.g. for design or young craftspersons. The innovation prize will be awarded this year one day in advance of the R+T, thereby allowing the exhibitors to present their innovation prizes right from the beginning of the show. For visitors, there will be a poster show giving a complete overview of the event.

Extensive supporting programme In addition to exhibitors from all kinds of countries, the visitors can expect to see the most extensive supporting programme that has ever been of-

Well attended halls impose significant demands on exhibitors. The show stands must function with and without consulting provision, and provide information to visitors.

Communication is key, and occupies the top slot on the exhibitors' agenda alongside product presentations.

GENTNER FORUM

“THE NETWORKED HOUSE“ ON  FEBRUARY AT THE R+T 

Greater comfort = greater energy efficiency What would roller shutters and solar protection be without electric drives and controllers? Moving up and down with time control or deploying the awning based on a solar sensor – the industry has been able to do this for more than  years now. However, the Smart Home topic is opening up entirely new possibilities, and the Gentner Forum will be showing them to you at the R+T.

Placing comfort before energy efficiency or, better still, establishing a link between greater comfort and greater energy efficiency – are these ideas too bold? The editors are clear: In everyday life, the most important component is forgotten: The people living in the home, or those working in offices. What is the purpose of all the sales efforts, consultation or instructions, unless the people who use the building cannot appreciate the advantages and benefits for themselves. Smart Home, or better still building automation, can only function really successfully if it takes place automatically. No.

That means controlling heating, ventilation, solar protection and light according to environmental parameters and existing products. For each situation, it is possible to call up the necessary parameters and move the awnings, roller shutters and the like into position. Imagine the user wants more light, but the control logic indicates that the roller shutter should be closed.

The central arrangement of the atrium in the east entrance means that every visitor to the show will quickly and easily find their way to the Gentner Forum, “the networked house“.

Simply raising again and overriding the controller would certainly be the fastest solution, but also the worst one. How can it be done better? Pay us a visit at the Gentner Forum and find out for yourself. — www.sonnenschutzwelt.eu Table: Olaf Vögele

In the forum for practical electricians, you will discover what must be taken into account during the safety check on electrical components, and how you can minimise the liability risk for yourself as an installer. Hardly any roller shutter, door or solar protection system nowadays functions without electrical components. Installers must subject each system to an electrical safety check after installation, and users must also take account of the dangers posed by these components in their risk assessment. Armed with the content of the forum, specialist companies will be able to improve their consulting potential and, above all, detect how retrofitting or conversion of a door system might lead to problems with certification for thedoor system, and how they can be avoided. 26 feb, 10:30 – 12:00, hall 4, stand 4d22

Presentations on equal terms

The networked house The “Gentner Forum” focusses on the topic of “building automation/Smart Home”, and thus the benefit for the user of the building. From the smartphone or tablet as the tool for efficiently using and monitoring the Smart Home (solar protection, doors, heating, climate, ventilation, photovoltaics) through to the best combination in building automation from a planner's perspective, visitors to the Forum will be afforded a broad insight into the complex topic of building control. The speakers will combine best-practice examples with the “status quo” of the interface standard. Two lecture blocks with the same presentations should give visitors to the show the opportunity to integrate the lectures in the Gentner Forum effectively into their own visiting schedule, thus meaning that they can take away with them one of the central topics of the R+T.

Building automation, with its links, is a central topic of the industry.

As in the decathlon in athletics, the participants will be faced by 10 tasks associated with installation of products exhibited at the show. For example, there will be fitting an awning, changing the sheet, installing Venetian blind rails or complete installation of a roller shutter curtain with motor and electrical connection in a roller shutter box/window combination. The whole thing will take place under realistic conditions, because there are two identical competition areas for the battle which reflect masonry and built-in windows and roller shutter boxes in practical applications. The controller area is also being expanded significantly. For example, the participants will have to integrate several drives into the controller, and programme a specified scenario. The sponsors of the event are Beck+Heun, Varisol, Roma, Faac Tubular Motors, Sattler, Musculus, Rademacher, Gayko and Came, which are renowned companies and will be involved in the tasks of the battle with their own products.

SUN SHADING

IFT SPECIAL SHOW AT THE R+T

Special show “More than light + shade!”

Photo: bpr/ ift Rosenheim

Modern buildings can no longer do without highperformance solar/glare protection and daylight systems nowadays, and also windows and doors are subject to more requirements than simply "shutting a hole". The systems have to be able to do more than convince with colour and design or seal a room. Systems for solar protection and using natural, healthy daylight play an outstanding role in living comfort, security and health. As a result, these systems, in conjunction with window and façade systems, must become an integral component of a modern building envelope, in order to achieve significant reductions in the enormous amount of energy consumed for air conditioning and lighting. The further development of window, façade and glass systems is making integration of solar/glare protection and daylight systems ever simpler and ever better. However, the technical possibilities are not taken into account in many modern building trends or by architects, or else are used insufficiently. However, planning, production and installation of high-performance systems needs much more than simply information and key figures on resistance to wind load or colours and design: for shading systems, it is also necessary to comply with information about solar protection effectiveness (gtotal), regulations on provision of daylight (light guidance), thermal protection, anti-burglary protection, UV resistance, abrasion as well as dust/sand protection.

The areas of the special show: . High-performance solar protection, glare protection and daylight systems in the context of the building envelope (located on the inside and outside) . Energy-efficient and secure roller shutters with structurally optimised connections and use as temporary thermal insulation . Window, façade and glass systems with integrated solar/glare protection and daylight systems . Installation and attachment systems . Software and control systems . Power-operated door with innovative control and security devices . Solar protection with glazing and photovoltaics . Sustainability – products with verified sustainability criteria The ift special show "More than light + shade!" takes account of this complexity and shows the important technical key figures. The technical, scientific and legal regulations defined in standards (CE mark) are presented, as well as suitable processes for testing and quality assurance. Modern, high-performance products from leading manufacturers that include amongst them the technical champions in their particular field are used as a means of showing all of this. www.ift-rosenheim.de

Reflexa scores points with Panomar Reflexa gives customers a wide range of awnings for all fields of application. All of our awnings have one thing in common: an extensive selection of designs, colours and material qualities. One key area in sales is folding-arm awnings, which are especially popular for providing shade to the patios and balconies of residential homes or in the seating areas of cafés and restaurants. Models in a wide variety of price classes, installation options and equipment feature high material quality, reliable technology and appealing designs. This variety includes an entry-level model with an appealing price/performance ratio as well as elegant cassette awnings with a very small cassette and an awning

where the projection can be larger than its width. Depending on the model, maximum installation widths of  m and a maximum projection of  m is possible. For coupled systems, the maximum installable width is even  m. Vertical awnings are especially well-suited for windows. In addition to providing sun protection, the "Minimatic" vertical awning can also be used effectively as a set of blinds. It can be easily and quickly installed on a window or façade and can be ordered with either lateral guide rails or lateral guide ropes that the curtain moves along vertically. At the R+T trade fair, the Reflexa city will be

Everyone is familiar with the situation: You are sitting with company on the patio and having a good time in a relaxing atmosphere late into a summer night, but some of your neighbours feel you are too loud and tell you they are trying to sleep. If these conversations on patios at home can cause problems, think of how much worse it is for the food service industry. Here, the background noise is multiplied and often leads to complaints. The answer is the self-developed awning solution from Francesco LattucaBonamico, which has a clever way of cutting down the noise with its double fabric solution. By arranging a second piece of fabric underneath the arms, the airborne sound is effectively dampened and overlying rooms are protected from the noise under the awning. When closed, both pieces of fabric disappear into the cassette awning. www.ideal-markisen.de

The roller shutter box is a triumph

Regardless of whether it's a new construction or renovation, the Puro and Puro.XR top-mounted boxes can be integrated optimally into any wall structure.

Particularly for large windows, more and more stress occurs on the window frame, which can cause the joints to tear. To divert these loads on the window to the brickwork over the lintel, Roma is introducing window frame stabilisation for the Puro and Puro.XR top-mounted roller shutters starting in May 2015. The special design of window frame stabilisation allows convenient mounting from the outside without needing to open the side covers. This saves time during installation and guarantees clean results without dust on the roller shutter curtain from drilling. Window frame stabilisation has been in the product range for Puro.XR Venetian blind boxes since 2013. For customised design options, outside plaster base profiles are available in various widths. The aluminium base profiles can be clipped onto the bottom side of the outer panel with default sizes of zero, seven or 15 mm. Outside plaster Puro top-mounted boxes allow roller shutters base profile extensions between 15 and and Venetian blinds to be used in the same 70 mm are also available, if needed. The square box.

Four parts and that's it

The perfect combination of windows, roller shutters and sun protection “New EU standards for energy efficiency and quality of window systems will go into effect in 2017,” says CEO Martin Troyer. “The bar for physical construction is high for the small home builder, but also for large-scale projects. Window installation in its previous form is a thing of the past, as we see it. The approaching revolution is substantial. Eleven million windows are installed per year in Germany alone.” Hella wants to show its vision for the future at the trade fair using live demonstrations of a complete system called “Travframe”. “We asked ourselves how we can integrate the complex combination of windows and sun protection into any façade easily in terms of construction and compli-

ance with standards. Our Travframe can do this,” explains Troyer, who is looking to set a new industry standard with the innovation. What Hella employees are looking to convey to trade fair visitors is actually a quantum leap for designers and building owners: A finished module is inserted into the window opening of the building shell. Later, this module will seamlessly house the window and sun protection. Easy installation saves time and money. Thermal bridges, cracks in the plaster and other design flaws are virtually impossible; the energy values are brilliant, as is the sound insulation. “Some day, all windows will be installed in this way,” says Troyer. www.hella.info

BECK+HEUN: IDEAL ROOM VENTILATION WITH AIRFOX

FLEXIBLE TOPMOUNTED BOX SYSTEM

State-of-the-art structural design with heat recovery

Innovations from Konradsreuth

Today's new buildings and renovations are incredibly well insulated and have significantly reduced the need for thermal heat. This is intended to protect our environment and our pocketbooks as well. However, making buildings more airtight prevents natural air exchange—including maintaining the humidity balance—bringing with it the risk of mould and mildew as well as poor room climate. For this reason and for additional energy savings, an intelligent and efficient fresh air system is an absolute necessity. Since each room is used differently, radiators are controlled roomby-room. Ideally, ventilation should also be carried out room-by-room as well. The newly developed Airfox allows these requirements to be met, while saving energy and increasing the level of comfort at home. www.beck-heun.de

Hall , Booth B After a being developed for almost a year, the most recent product from Alukon is ready for series production and has already been nominated for the innovation prize at R+T in Stuttgart.

The compact design of the decentralised room ventilation system with heat recovery allows it to combine the advantages of controlled ventilation with the straightforward system engineering of decentralised home automation systems.

In order to meet the requirements of the German Energy Savings Ordinance (EnEV) for roller shutter boxes, a high-strength foam is used when high load capacity and strength are needed (outer panel and top section). A highly insulating material is used where insulation is needed (interior panel and insulating wedge). The material combination more than meets the most recent requirements of the EnEV. The flexibility is evident in the option to install any kind of blinds, regardless of whether roller shutters, Venetian blinds, s_onro or roller blinds are used. If desired, the integrated insect screen can be installed in the AK-Flex box straight away or later. You can also choose whether the retrofit is to be carried out from the inside or outside. Coupled elements can also be implemented easily. www.alukon.de

The coil diameter of the rs hybrid is just as space-saving here as a markisolette. The resulting synergies are expected to open up additional business fields for the processor. One of these is an insulating box system that can be used

at a minimum insulation thickness of  mm. At the same time, it provides the opportunity to respond to larger insulation depths. exchangeable valances for advertising sunshades generate additional sales

Advertising for the day with a sunshade Many restaurants offer their guests different menus depending on the time of day and the season. But this is known mostly by only the regulars, who are already familiar with the establishment. This raises the question: How can the attention of new guests be drawn to the current menu items? Michael Caravita, CEO and owner of Caravita, has developed his own idea: “Valances for sunshades that can be changed depending on the time of day or season. The idea seems so simple but is ingenious, because it opens up a particularly practical and inexpensive advertising surface. Hardly any other type of outdoor advertising can be more effective for restaurant proprietors.” It can be used to advertise for the particular day: a party evening with live music, happy hour with unusual cocktails, asparagus season with fresh asparagus dishes or weekly spare ribs on Thursdays, and thereby increase the sunshade’s value and bring in additional guests. Replacing the valances is quite easy. “Unzip the fastener, remove the valance and attach the new valance. Changing advertising messages can’t be any faster or less complicated,” Caravita says. And so the exchangeable valances offer a maximum of flexibility. The valances are made of rugged PVC and can have whatever themes the customer wants printed on them. With the objective of building a sunshade that can withstand the elements, the new Big Ben 2 from Caravita was tested last year in the high-tech wind tunnel from Mercedes-Benz. The large 3 x 3-metre version of the rugged sunshade had no trouble withstanding even severe squalls of up to 100 km/h. Big Ben was completely redesigned to achieve these values. Big Ben 2 appeared for the test equipped with a flatter roof and strong braces with extra-

long U-shaped support profiles, and it impressed even the designers with its high resistance. Of course the best solution is to close sunshades when the wind is strong, Caravita says. Nevertheless, high reference values make sense and are being requested by customers ever more frequently. Even if no one wants to keep sitting on the patio in wind speeds of 100 km/h, in the end the point is also to give the guests a sense of safety and security.

The land needs new shapes

Professional designs for successful “outdoor food service” Since 1950 designers and engineers at Becher Textil- & Stahlbau GmbH near Gummersbach, Germany, have been working on the design and manufacture of what are called “fabric structures”. Particularly in the area of large, architecturally demanding all-weather umbrellas, the company provides an extensive product portfolio for commercial use. The umbrellas are now to be found all over the world, whether in the hotel and restaurant industries, in municipal gardening and landscaping and not least of all on cruise ships and oceangoing yachts. “For nearly 30 years the Bahama brand has stood for large umbrella designs of a technical quality which is unrivalled around the globe,” CEO Hans-Herbert Becher proudly says, adding that they are produced exclusively in Germany and entirely by in-house factories. They also support dealers and food service businesses with a planning service. For this purpose, A3-format CAD layouts are created based on layouts made available by the Project Department. These layouts make the feasible arrangement of umbrellas understandable to the ordinary person. The umbrella manufacturer has learned from flowers the principle by which water is conducted down through the mast. www.bahama.de

Panel blinds have their origin in Asia. Today, the Far Eastern tradition of light and shadow play behind sliding walls represents a firm feature of modern dwelling concepts in Germany. For this purpose, smooth fabric webs are guided within a system of rails, allowing the individual panels to be moved sideways. Depending on the arrangement and size of the elements, this allows light and visibility to be controlled over a large area. The bandwidth ranges from transparent through to opaque solutions, thereby allowing the end-user's private sphere to be protected. Erfal is also supporting the German Interior Designer' Day (GID day) to be held in the atrium of the Stuttgart exhibition centre on 27 February 2015.

Pleated blinds from Hunter Douglas are produced from strikingly pleated 20 mm fabrics, and are available in a wide variety of flame-retardant fabrics with various colours and degrees of transparency. The heat-reflective Topar coating and coatings with a metal inlay ensure additional energy efficiency and improved light control. The most effective solution for light control and avoiding glare in the workplace is a "Combi Shade", representing a combination of two curtains with transparency levels that can be adjusted independently from one another. This means the daylight or excessively strong outside light can be optimally controlled manually or by means of intelligent control systems. For a great reflection of the light shining into the room, it is possible for pleated fabrics to be coated with Topar. The coating provided with a reflective dye is intended to be moisture resistant, dirt repellent and durable. The fabric coated with a metal inlay is also characterised by high performance in terms of reflecting sunlight and heat.

Pleated blinds are an optimum solution for regulating the incidence of light.

Internal solar protection with double benefit

Honeycomb structure ensures thermal and light comfort The principle of stationary air is exploited by MHZ in marketing its honeycomb pleated fabrics, since it provides useful sales arguments. After all, a com-

fortable atmosphere and pleasant lighting are only two aspects of light control achieved with the honeycomb-shaped structure of the curtains depending on their transparency and curtain colour; thermal comfort also plays a major role in this. The air cushion that is formed by the honeycomb structure against the window is insulated against penetrating cold, and cuts heat losses by up to 46 percent. The company says that heating cost sav-

ings can also be demonstrated. In summer, the operating principle is reversed, and effective protection achieved against heat and UV radiation. The solar input at the window should thus be able to be reduced by up to 78 percent. The three different honeycomb structures and many fabric qualities available in a choice of different colours are intended to guarantee even illumination from the daylight entering the room. www.mhz.de

Textile solar protection is winning out

Sattler continues development of Lumera

Colour is joining the party

Since January, Sattler has added three product groups to its range of privacy and glare protection products, with the new PVC-free collection, Twilight: Pearl, Metal and Space, which are adding the finishing touches to architecture both in terms of colour selection and their technical properties. With good flame-retardant properties and being excellently suitable for ZIP systems, they can be used both outdoors and indoors These topics were also included in development of the new Twilight series. In the past, people used to spend a lot of time outdoors and go back into their homes for protection and relaxation, whereas today people spend much more time inside buildings, and attempt to get as much sunlight as possible inside their rooms. These changes in lifestyle are redefining expectations on solar protection and privacy. Targeted daylight control is set to increase significantly as a way of improving people's well-being. Furthermore, Sattler will be presenting its 686 and 716 qualities at the R+T for requirements in the areas of The extensive fabric and colour collections are intended to o ffer customers a perfectly adapted solution in the solar protection pergolas and basket awnarea for all applications. ings, since the desire for permanent shading is becoming greater, especially in southern countries. The Lumera acrylic quality provides an extremely dense surface with CBA fibres, and will also feature on the exhibition Booth. Lumera has already proven its toughness during the last battle of the craftspersons at the R+T, during which the sheets were changed forty times without problems. In 2015, the material from the competition will once again be used in front of Hall 1. A particular highlight should be the 140th company anniversary for the family-run firm from Graz, which is one of the leading lights in the European textile business.

The extremely dense surface of Lumera is responsible for ensuring that dirt can hardly gain a foothold, thereby allowing the colours to shine brighter and longer. www.sattler-elements.com

Sattler celebrates its 140th anniversary at the R+T

In order to keep the interior temperature at a low level and as constant as possible, the architects used Soltis 92 for the school and neighbourhood centre at Cressy in Geneva. “Glow worm” is the name of the design concept for the school and neighbourhood centre in the Geneva suburb of Cressy, for which the competition winner Devanthéry Lamunière provided a convincing solution. Colourful solar protection screens from the French manufacturer, Ferrari, were used in the façade design in order to enable the architect's colour concept to be achieved. The Soltis used on a two-piece countertension system guarantees a high level of optical comfort combined with excellent glare protection performance, while only impairing the view onto the generous open area layout to a minimum extent. In this way, it has been possible to create a light and bright atmosphere of space. The sun protection screens are designed as two-piece, vertical countertension systems. The roller cassettes have been made as small as possible because of the thin properties of the fabric, thereby complying with the architect's wish for an almost uninterrupted line between the webs. Also, the appearance of the glass and steel construction is unimpaired. The term "Glow worm" is only fully explained in terms of its meaning when the night-time lighting is switched on. The lighting concept developed together with the light artist Daniel Schlaepfer creates a perfect colour play even at night. Soltis 92 is characterised by its patented précontraint technology from the manufacturer. In this process, the solar protection fabrics are pre-tensioned at all four sides throughout the entire production process so as to achieve a high level of dimensional stability. This is intended to guarantee that there will be no deformation or wrinkling of the fabric even in very large screens. As well as Soltis 92, the manufacturer also carries many other qualities in its range that are suitable for an extremely wide variety of applications. www.sergeferrari.com

Dickson puts rainwater to use

Product guarantee up to 10 years

Optimised surfaces

Strong colours are in demand

The special surface treatment allows the rainwater draining off to be used for picking up the dirt from the surface of the awning, thereby ensuring a better appearance and longer service live of the awning sheet. It is not just in the awning sheet area that the company from Lille in France is active. “We deal with the entire aspects of the building so we can supply our customers with effectively functioning fabrics”, says the CEO of Dickson Deutschland, Lars Rippstein. In response to the current requirements for building solar protection, the company developed its Sunworker fabric quality that is intended to combine transparency, resilience and elegance with a high level of light and thermal comfort. The specially manufactured fabric has a high level of resistance against mechanical stress, and with its regular graining and micro-mesh structure, guarantees optimum transparency at the same time as filtering out the sun's rays and heat. Sunworker is in accordance with various European fire protection standards (M1, B1, Class 1), thus making it one of the most important textile solutions for use in public buildings. Sunworker M1 is available in several web widths (150 and 300 cm), as well as in the form of vertical bands. www.dickson-constant.de

Sauleda is banking on a clearly defined strategy to protect its customers and consumers. To ensure they are not offered imitations, the seam of the fabrics is identified with the Sauleda “S”, as a means of clarifying the origin in case of claims under the guarantee. All fabric patterns are also protected and registered in order to rule out copies or pirated products. The durability of the fabrics is continuously checked by tests in laboratories, so the manufacturer can offer a guarantee of up to 10 years under normal loading conditions from solar radiation and weathering, on the basis of its many years of experience. The fabrics are intended to offer 90% solar protection as well as high UV resistance in most configurations. In addition, through cooperation with the official test laboratory Aitex and the Test Association for Protective Measures against UV Radiation, a study has been carried out to establish how the fabrics react in their original condition and following various conventional treatments and ageing treatment, in response to UV radiation. www.sauleda.es

The substances from the new collection, Sensations, have also successfully passed the laboratory tests. The high level of UV protection is intended to allow people to stay on the patio for longer enjoying the sun.

Para offers acrylic and polyester in its delivery range

The palette ranges from discreet to colourful The Tempotest Star Light awning fabric from Para is a 100% spundyed polyester fabric. The fabric is claimed to be thinner and somewhat lighter than a normal awning fabric made of polyacrylic. The advantage of Tempotest Star Light concerns its pronounced elastic recovery properties and high level of resistance to deformation and tension. This means it does not tend to stretch so quickly, and is characterised by a lower

level of wrinkling. As a result, the fabric is particularly suitable for folding arm awnings with a large surface area, as well as shading conservatories. The quality of the spundyed fibres made of acrylic or polyester and the Teflon Extreme finish by Parà are intended to ensure in all Tempotest fabrics that they are water and oil-repellent as well as resistant to rot. As a result, the fabrics should also be immune to fungus and mildew growth, stain repellent, resistant to salt air and bleaching due to the effect of UV rays. www.para.it

The plug-and-play motors from FAAC and altron—the two brands from FAAC Tubular Motors—offer a wide variety of advantages for the end customer, the roller shutter specialised dealer and the fitter. The fitter saves valuable production time. The motor is simply inserted into the roller shutter shaft, the shutter is fastened with solid shaft connectors, the limit stops for the upper end position are installed, the motor is connected and you are done. A set-up procedure is no longer necessary and the end positions do not require any readjustment. The plug-and-play motors with automatic end position detection also provide the dealer with another helpful advantage for making a sale while simplifying on-site adjustments. www.faac-tubularmotors.com

The cost-effective IntiKit is a design-oriented alternative to traditional, conservative remote control systems. The Italian manufacturer Nice is looking to make automation better, simpler and more cost effective with IntiKit. Plans are to make remote control systems for gates and garage doors also available for retrofitting onto existing sun protection or door/gate systems and integrate them into the existing system. The ergonomically designed remote control systems come in six colours with a very scratch-resistant coating. IntiKit consists of three transmitters with two channels, . MHz (red, green and blue) and a pre-wired universal receiver with two channels. A personalised identity code defines the priority level between transmitters with the same code. Specific customer order requests are integrated right from the start of production of the motors and delivered using a just-in-time approach.

BELUTEC EXPANDS ITS PRODUCT PORTFOLIO

BeluControl relies on comfort and security The door manufacturer from Emsland is promising total control with its newly developed BeluControl system, which creates the opportunity of viewing your own garden gate, garage door or entrance door without leaving your home, via your own WLAN network, or if required from anywhere on the world online. “During development of our own system, we placed great emphasis on keeping the data in the user's hands, as a result of which the data is exclusively stored locally”, explains Bernhard Lucas, the CEO of BeluTec. According to Lucas, a customer survey had shown that this topic is a particularly sensitive one in view of hacking and NSA scandals, and customers want to know precisely what is happening to their data and who has control over it. Indoor and/or outdoor cameras should enable the required areas to be monitored live and with high image quality. When movement is detected in the monitoring area, the system is activated and sends an email containing the corresponding screenshot to the owner. At a click, it is possible to start the live

However, BeluControl can do more than control gates and doors; it is also possible to use the system for dimming lights and bulbs or opening and closing roller shutters and solar protection systems. Based on the international KNX bus standard, he continues, BeluControl is also compatible with all current operating systems, which makes it optimum for retrofitting to existing systems, irrespective of the drive manufacturer. Live video monitoring can take place using the computer or on a smartphone and tablet, by means of the BeluControl app which runs on Android and iOS systems. “The operating menu has been deliberately kept as simple as possible to permit easy operation without a learning phase or need for extensive instruction; also, delivery as a complete set including camera makes the installation very simple,” says Lucas. www.belucontrol.com Hall , Booth C

One, two, three, four panels

At R+T, the Lingen-based manufacturer is displaying a raising folding shutter with four panels and a size of 5.5 x 5 m like the one used in the Morning Lane project in London.

BeluTec started developing raising folding shutters in  and is now looking to demonstrate that there is still plenty of life left in the development potential in this product with its -panel raising folding shutter at R+T. The exhibition piece is a module in original size from the “Morning Lane” construction project in London, which is currently being installed. The façade makes use of raising folding shutter systems more than  meters long. Visitors will also be able to find the traditional, two-panel raising folding shutter solution at the R+T trade fair. The details behind the flush installation over large areas deserves special emphasis. Using a corner solution where two raising folding shutters are able to close directly side by side, the Lingen-based manufacturer is showcasing the option of having an entirely open building façade. “Raising folding shutters are the perfect solution

for a situation like this in both new buildings and for renovations. This fact in particular is of great importance, because renovations on old buildings frequently make use of new building parts. This means a raising folding curtain can be combined with a curtain wall façade to form a shared, uniform façade surface,” remarks managing director Bernhard Lucas, who developed the systems entirely by himself. “In the future, sun protection will not just act as a standalone function, but instead will play a key role in providing balance within buildings throughout the year through a combination of shades, photovoltaics and building automation,” says Lucas. BeluTec is looking to play its part in making this a reality by providing architects with a product they can use to fulfil their design ideas and where the surface of raising folding shutters can be covered by large photovoltaic modules or other features. www.belutec.com

The architect's favourite product

Also possible with wood With the Loggiawood system, the staff at Renson are looking to provide aesthetic, flexible, efficient sun protection in order to meet the design ideas of architects and planners who have recently discovered a renewed interest in the area of sliding shutters. In order to meet architects' demand for surfaces made of wood, they developed a solution just as suitable for use on sliding elements as it is on rigid sun protection panels. Panel infills of wooden louvres are designed to combine the structural strength of the aluminium frame with the elegance and natural appeal of wood. In order to provide these benefits, the pre-installed panels free of visible connecting elements are delivered to order ready for installation in an extruded aluminium frame with an anodised or powder-coated surface. A selection of various types of wood with different louvre shapes provides a large degree of flexibility in design together with the freely selectable louvre spacing and pitch. Maintenance-free sliding part fittings ensure a long service life for the sliding panels. The sliding shutters can be moved by hand or using a motor drive. “This puts us into a position to offer individualised solutions specifically for architects in addition to our standard solutions,” explains Johan Debaere, Head of PR and Communication. “Our project team worked closely with architects,

Touching the gate is impossible

Perfect protection for gates Using the RAY-LG, a highly compact safety light barrier has been developed for all kinds of high-speed, sectional and industrial gates with an operating range of up to 8 m. Depending on the length, it has up to 50 optical elements and a minimum resolution of 50 mm. The transmitter and receiver strips are intended for installation directly in the guide rails of the gate thanks to the gate masking function. Use of inclined beams means that the detection capability of the RAY-LG is increased, thereby allowing even small objects to be detected safely. The light barrier is available with various light beam spacings and electrical outputs. It is intended to be easy to install and proves extremely effective in use thanks to its IP67 housing.

The safety light barrier is intended to be easy to install and, because of its h ousing structure and high light reserve capacity, offer extremely robust performance in spite of dirt, dust and water. www.vitector.eu

Gates with unusual shapes

Günther is exhibiting at the R+T

Planning and installation of a semicircular smoke protection gate represented a particular challenge. For technical smoke reasons, one gate with eight individual elements was produced from the originally exactly semicircular gate.

Seamless quality control at all stages of the manufacturing process is intended to ensure that all product variants offer a wide range of functions with excellent service lives and utilisation periods.

The Jansen company claims to be Germany's leading supplier for innovative special solutions and special fabrications, and concentrates particularly on building special designs in the gate sector. This is reflected in particularly large dimensions, shapes and configurations, with or without fire protection, even outside the registration area. According to the company, all systems are entirely individually developed and produced. Fire protection gates are provided with inlet, outlet and drop flaps, and are able to be decoratively adapted to guarantee a harmonious look. Almost any kind of panelling requested by the customer should be possible. At the R+T, like at the BAU in Munich, Jansen will be presenting some of its product portfolio from the gate sector.

Under the name Günther Tore Systems GmbH, the traditional gate manufacturer from Neuenkirchen will be appearing at the R+T for the first time after its takeover by the Alutech Group from Minsk. The revised company structure offers complete solutions for industrial systems, office buildings and private houses due to a wide range of different types and varieties of gate and roller shutter systems. 90% of the components and accessories are produced in the Group's own production facilities, according to the company. In order to comply with quality standards, the manufacturer states that all components are matched against a colour pattern and checked for compatibility between units and assemblies. Particular attention is also paid to logistics in order to create favourable conditions and achieve short delivery times for customers.

R+T. As one of the leading manufacturers of highquality gate and solar protection drives as well as radio remote controls for home automation in Europe, they intend to raise the bar even higher at the R+T with a new drive. The greatest emphasis is placed on excellent quality

and outstanding service. As a result, the finished products are exclusively sold through dealers. Certification to DIN EN ISO 9001 was achieved back in 1995. The customer-oriented customer philosophy has been set out in a company guideline, which serves as a rubric for everyday business. With an export quote of approx. 80%, the company is underscoring its international competitiveness in some difficult foreign markets where highquality German workmanship is successfully appreciated. The company also intends to use the international nature of the R+T to expand this area further. www.sommer.eu

Barrier solution with good design

When retrofitting is called for

Came supplies the Gard 4 barrier system for a barrier width of up to 3.75 m. In addition to its technical liability, the barrier system is also intended to be a visual highlight at any drive entrance with its round shape. The integrated LED flashing light and optional LED boom lighting are also intended to guarantee detectability and save energy even under poor visibility conditions. The shock-proof aluminium die cast cover protects the easily accessible topmounted control unit optimally against external influences. A collision coupling for the barrier boom ensures that it disengages from the holder if contact is made with a vehicle, thereby turning through 90° and moving away downwards. The electric models of the Gard 4 series have a "sleep mode" function to specifically reduce electricity consumption in standby status.

With a maximum LED light output corresponding to a 160 W bulb, the garage will also be extremely brightly illuminated. The manufacturer paid particular attention to producing the operating instructions, stating under point 1.2 clearly which groups of people are allowed to install or retrofit garage door drives. Here, the target group is stated as exclusively qualified and trained specialist personnel, and the corresponding regulations and standards are listed which they must comply with. For the operator of a door system, it is also made clear what obligations arise in terms of reading the operating instructions and possessing the necessary knowledge of general safety and accident prevention regulations.

LUCAs with a new profile

Shaded from above or below Lucas already made an a ppearance with the new BeluTec sales organisation at the Bau trade fair in Munich. In addition to wood or wood/aluminium designs, aluminium roofs will also be available.

Canopy solutions and side awnings are especially popular with customers that prefer a lightweight, unobtrusive solution with a Mediterranean feel.

To meet the diverse requirements and demands of its dealers in the area of sun protection, the Lucas

product line became integrated into the product portfolio of the BeluTec façade specialists as an ad-

ditional brand at the beginning of 2015. Currently, the company is working with more than 300 dealers and is looking to expand this range at the R+T trade show. The Lucas logo has also been adapted with the new CI from BeluTec. In addition to door and façade systems, the Lingen-based manufacturer now also offers a complete product selection for dealers in the areas of awnings, sun protection and canopy systems. Glass roofs with wood, wood/aluminium and aluminium designs and house doors are being added to this extensive product range. These products offer comprehensive solution options for activities out on the patio and for outdoor food service. The technical office of BeluTec is planning and developing special solutions in these areas for the f uture. Patios are the focus for Lucas at the R+T trade fair. The top-glazed and bottom-glazed awning product range includes a glass roof module made of a half wood/half aluminium and aluminium roof design. The highlight is a motorised canopy system that can be mounted under a glass roof or pergola. A system is also available with movement by hand. www.belutec.com

Stable solutions for all situations

Safe from rain All too often, the various awnings designs are declared as nothing more than sun protection. However, the range of services has changed significantly since 2006 and awning standardisation. Now, awnings with inclines of 14° or larger must be able to function flawlessly, even in the rain. In practice, customers quickly realise that it is not always possible to comply with the required incline while still having usable clearance below the awning because the installation location usually does not allow for an installation height of more than 300 cm. This is where Leiner comes in. This awning specialist from the Augsburg area has raised the bar even higher of its own accord. Leiner's in-house developments are intended for use at inclines starting at 5° or larger (7.5° or larger on coupled systems) and on specific designs with waterproof awning fabric, even during heavy downpours (56 litres per m2/h). The entire awning system is equipped with diagonal profiles that support the fabric. This ensures that the water drains and prevents the formation of dreaded water pockets. Above all, this provides a higher clearance.

With its flat, crease-free fabric covering available in a variety of colours, folding patio roofs quickly give patio dwellers the feeling of standing under a solid roof once extended. www.leiner.de

CLEAR DESIGN MEETS FUNCTION

The art of shade Who wouldn't want to bring the great outdoors into residential living space and enjoy nice weather without risking sunburn? This aspiration is the inspiration for Soliday products. The Austrian manufacturer's awnings are intended to open up a new dimension of outdoor living. The awning provides shade on demand, making it ideal for use as a trendy fixture in the garden or on the balcony, patio or veranda. With a combination of professional awning fabrics and state-of-the-art technology, the awnings are custom-tailored to the customer's requirements. The experts from Austria have also succeeded in making entirely new dimensions for sun protection possible: A sophisticated mechanical system enables the Soliday C, M and CS awnings to attain an area of up to  square metres. The fabrics are permeable to air, have a very high UV resistance and, according to the manufacturer, have a relatively low dead weight. The properties of the Austronet material are primarily suited to larger-scale shade installations, while the Austrosail quality is available in a wide range of colours with high water and UV resistance, which ensures that their appearance remains outBoothing for a long time. At a booth spanning some  square metres, Csun is featuring two of its exclusive shade solutions: This unusual and technically sophisticated design attracted attention at one of the elipssun – the world's world's largest and most famous design competitions. first ellipsoid awning – and the squaresun German manufacturer Csun intends its awnings line of rectangular awnings. This feature may sound obvious, but should not be taken for granted – it is due to a patented weight-controlled wind pressure relief system that Csun has developed over several years. The second major featured product, elipssun, has a dynamic ellipse form that makes it a real looker: The cloth flows toward the tip of the awning in an elegant swinging motion. It is extended electrically, while being tensioned by a single tension cable fastened to a stainless steel mast. This unusual, technically sophisticated design was distinguished in  with the "Red Dot: Best of the Best." Now that Csun has set up a wide network of dealers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the company hopes to make other valuable contacts around the world at the trade fair. www.c4sun.de

OVERHAUL IMPROVES ENERGY BALANCE

CALCULATING PACKAGE HEIGHTS USING THE ROMA APP

Sensible detailed solutions

Venetian blinds can get even better

The two-point welded guide nipples that are embedded flush with the surface of the louvre are optimised.

Since the necessary panel heights are also reduced with the optimisation of the package heights, in the future, the sun protection will be able to be integrated into the façade in a considerably less conspicuous manner.

Delivering on its promise to produce innovative and functional sun protection, Roma, a manufacturer based in Burgau, Germany, has advanced the connection of self-supporting façade Venetian blinds. The new carrier profile enables the carrier clamps to be positioned and installed without tools using a bayonet catch. Screw channels in the carrier profile help to fasten the panel. The specially developed carrier forks create a simple and functional connection of the guide The free package height calculator gives trade rails with the panel. This alpartners and assembly technicians a quick overso makes it easier to couview of the relevant heights for measuring and ple multiple hangings next ordering Venetian blinds. to each other. Sound insulation that separates the hanging portion from the guide rail comes standard in the new, self-supporting façade Venetian blinds. Starting March , the selfsupporting Venetian blinds with the new details are to be shipped to dealers. The new package height calculator from Roma is intended to provide trade partners and assembly technicians with all heights important for measuring and ordering Venetian blinds while they are on the go. This allows the package heights of façade and top-mounted Venetian blinds or the modulus with the respective Venetian blind louvres to be calculated with just a few taps on an iPad or other tablet.

In the construction trade, package heights of the stacked louvres when Venetian blinds are retracted are becoming increasingly important with regard to legal requirements for thermal insulation, as they are the determining factor for the planning of the shaft or panel heights on the building. Since, from an energy-related standpoint, these are always a weak point on the façade, they should be as low as possible. The smaller the shaft, the lower the potential energy losses. The new  S model from Warema has not only made it possible to reduce the package height by more than %, but also increases the stability of the louvres by over % at the same time. To reduce the package height, Warema has overhauled the design of the lower rail and the louvre geometry. The significantly reduced diameter of the flange edge board gives the louvres an even more finely detailed appearance. The new louvre geometry also provides greater strength and stability. The optimised guide nipples with flush-inlaid -point welded joint and large counterplate transmit the newly gained stability to the guide rails. A new cable guide eyelet not only enables the greatest possible turn angle, but also contributes to reducing the package height. Last but not least, the elevator belt eyelets have also been improved, allowing the light incidence to be reduced to a minimum. www.warema.de

Bringing gentle daylight into rooms

Emergency Venetian blinds from eurosun

Schlotterer is going retro

Open very quickly

"We have developed next-generation sun protection with RetroLux Venetian blinds," says Peter Gubisch, CEO of the company based in the Alpine region of Austria. The secret of these new Venetian blinds lies in the two louvre segments and their special edge: The external segment reflects diWhether at home or at the office, the topic of glare rect sun rays back inprotection plays a central role when you're working on to the sky, preventyour computer. Schlotterer's solution to this problem is ing the window pane the daylight louvre. from heating up. By contrast, the segment pointed inward directs the diffuse daylight across the ceiling and deep into the room. This reduces the need to operate the air conditioner and switch on interior lights, which saves both energy and money on cooling and lighting. The daylight Venetian blinds also protect floors, furniture, and electronic devices from direct sunlight.

Attaching external sun protection is always recommended for physical design reasons. However, this becomes problematic if emergency exit areas are involved. For this reason, eurosun produces emergency Venetian blinds that have been certified by TÜV-Cert Nord and fulfil requirements from the building authorities for emergency exits and escape routes. If the Venetian blinds are down, the associated emergency system can raise them within seconds to clear the emergency exit. This emergency system can be attached as an additional module for all Venetian blinds that have louvres with a width of 80 mm. A pretensioned torsion spring controls the function mechanically. This spring is released by a cable, which is actuated by a manual lever in the room. After the spring is released, a certified specialist must bring the Venetian blinds back into operation without removal.

Solar protection  Tex tile applications

Textile solutions create shade and ambience

Colour determines light and shade

_

Colour selection in particular influences the level of heat and light permeability of an awning. Although a lighter colour allows more heat through, it does also offer better visibility and lighting conditions. On the other hand, darker colours provide efficient protection against heat, but they do block out more of the sunlight. With its extensive collections, Dickson intends to offer the best solution for all applications. The flagship of the traditional brand, the “Awnings” collection, includes a total of 212 patterns with 100 new, single-colour fabrics. As a result, the “Orchestra” assortment will in future comprise 188 colours and patterns. “Symphony” is available in 10 colours, and “Opera” provides 14 jacquard fabrics. Together with new, fascinating fabrics in a denim design, this selection is being promoted under the slogan “Addicted to colour”.

Colourful collections for all tastes Orchestra is the most extensive assortment on the market and provides a unique and unparalleled style for the latest trends in the area of indoor

and outdoor decorative fabrics, also providing 14 new plain colours for even more appeal. Whether pink, purple or green, the colours are intended to be just as effective over the full surface as when used as linear enhancements in the graphical striped patterns. Together with the 10 products from the Symphony assortment, including 5 new shades, the awning collection comprises 100 different plain colour. By varying these 100 plain shades in 18 new, classical or fashionably up-todate striped patterns as well as 9 new jacquard fabrics with surprising optical effects, Dickson intends to strengthen its outstanding position in the market as a provider of creative and stylish awning fabrics – with an awning collection composed of three assortments: Orchestra, Symphony and Opera.

Special solutions for commercial applications

Whether modern façades or outside: Nowadays, it is important to find an optimum solar protection solution that is not only efficient and sustainable, but also takes account of aesthetic requirements as well as technical aspects.

Awning sheets for patios and building façades are often subject to extremely tough conditions: Car exhaust fumes and cigarette smoke are only two of many sources of contamination. The assortment of technical textiles thus features the products Orchestra Max and Alto FR, which have been specifically developed for use in commercial and public areas. Both sheets represent the latest innovations in the textile market, and thus meet the exacting requirements of commercial proprietors and end-users with regard to efficiency and aesthetics, at the same time as offering features such as ease of care, colour fastness and non- permeability to water. As a result, there is a 10 year warranty on the material. — www.dickson-constant.de

The colour of the awning sheets additionally determines the level of protection against UV radiation. Dark colours provide complete protection against UVA and UVB radiation, whereas lighter colours offer comparable protection to a sun cream with a sun protection factor 50, according to information from the manufacturer.

TECHNICAL FABRICATION

SOLAR PROTECTION

GLUING OR SEWING IS NO LONGER A QUESTION

Accuracy counts

_

The many different awning fabrics in acrylic or polyester are delivered to the fabricator in a bale width of  cm. Nowadays, wide material is only available in a very limited choice.

More than  patterns are available to the specialist located in the vicinity of Cologne when it comes to fabricating fabrics or other textiles for solar protection. CEO Georg Musculus sees his company as a manufacturing centre for technical textiles; the company is now more than  years old and not only possesses a wide range of colours in its delivery portfolio, but is also a master in processing normal awning sheets and even special fabrications for triangular or trapezoidal solar protection systems. All fabrics such as acrylic, Soltis, screen, polyester or PVC-coated are sewn or bonded with crossways and lengthways seams according to customers’ requirements, as well as side hems, sewn-on loops or quick-application braiding.

Awnings have long since developed into a hightech product, and represent very exacting products with regard to production qualities. This applies in particular when it comes to fabricating fabric coverings which nowadays have a significant influence on the correct closing of awnings depending on the material and workmanship, or else significantly influence the folding characteristics of ZIP screens.

Acrylic or polyester? This question no longer applies to the use of high-quality polyester given the developments over recent years. In this context, it is now more likely to be the customer’s colour choice that determines which material is used, rather than the material-specific data. There is no clear recommendation providing the technical requirements are complied with for material strengths and other values such as light fastness, weather resistance, UV protection, water column and strength.

Sewing, gluing or bonding? There are several common processes that are differentiated from one another in the fabrication of awning cloths according to the fabric or tex-

tile. Whereas sheets made from PVC material are usually high-frequency bonded on all seams, the lengthways seams of classic awning sheets feature two common processes that can be used, namely sewing and bonding. Both production processes have been trialled over many years, and represent the state of the art. When gluing, it is not possible to dispense with sewing entirely, because the crossways seams still have to be produced in the traditional way as before. What is decisive during fabrication is not only the processing of the sheets but also the topic of rectangularity when cutting to size and the way that the individual fabric webs are put together. This is work that can be carried out without problems by the highly trained personnel at Musculus. — www.musculus.de

Semi or fully automatic trimming has long since been used to ensure dimensional accuracy and rectangularity in fabrication – important factors for trouble-free operation of solar protection systems.

COMPANY MERGERS

FAAC TUBULAR MOTORS AND KEMKO ON NEW COMPANY PREMISES

Unified in an even better position The sensible merger between the companies FAAC Tubular Motors and Kemko entailed the need for expanding office buildings and storage areas. With a new building close to the German border, the objective is to continue to be optimally placed to serve the most important market.

_

The merger between Kemko and FAAC Tubular Motors made it necessary to create more space – it was thus obvious that a new company building would have to be built, explains CEO Mitch Janssen. The positive developments at FAAC in Vlodrop had already given rise to considerations of expanding, and the further step of building a new structure would have shortly been taken, continues Janssen.

The new site in Doetinchem is located a little further north. A direct link to the motorway and proximity to the German border mean that short distances are involved for delivery logistics and services.

The new company building provides , m² of office and storage space, thus also creating room for future developments that are intended through the merger of the companies.

Synergy effects across the line With the integration of Kemko as a  % subsidiary of the FAAC Group, a new building was planned that should offer new office premises, seminar rooms as well as storage/production areas so as to be optimally equipped for the future. The warehouse logistics were to be optimised further with a high-bay warehouse, thus allowing dispatch and delivery times to be improved, as a means of meeting customers’ expectations in the future as well. The objective with the new seminar rooms is to offer customers even more training opportunities in order to meet the evergrowing requirements in the Smart Home area. With proximity to the German border and good motorway links via the A, customers will find it easy to reach the new location. The move from Vlodrop to the site in Doetinchem was completed at the end of last year. 

054_055_SSW_2015_E14G01_FAAC 54

Sensible service combination Kemko represents a reliable partner for access solutions and has established an extensive service organisation over the past  years; there is also a -hour hotline for emergencies. The warehouse and production facility in Doetinchem means that all parts are always in stock and thus available immediately, so the company is able to help any customer more or less immediately. Together with the service department of FAAC Tubular Motors, the German market in particular should be expanded further. In the area of processing too, customer enquiries and handling of ongoing orders should be able to be completed even more effectively and faster. Holiday times or ill-

nesses should also be able to be covered more effectively.

 years of FAAC at the R+T The other highlights should include this year’s appearance at the R+T in Stuttgart. It is not just the traditional show that is celebrating its th anniversary, FAAC will also be celebrating its th birthday in Stuttgart. Geburtstag. Above all, however, the goal is to use this opportunity to inform the industry visitors to Hall  Stand C about the progressive Drives-, Smart Home solutions and, in Hall  Stand A, about door drives, cabinets and bollards, etc. —

Discussion topics  Interview

An interview with the awning manufacturer Markilux

How is the awning market developing? In May 2013, Markilux caused quite a commotion and many discussions within the industry with the announcement to not attend R+T. At the start of the alternative roadshow programme for dealers, the return to R+T 2018 was also announced in November of last year at the first event in Emsdetten, Germany. To learn more about the viewpoints of the largest German awning manufacturer and the developments in the awning market, the GLASWELT editorial staff spoke with the three primarily responsible participants: Dan Schmitz, Klaus Wuchner and Markus Overbeck from Schmitzwerke. sONNENSCHUTZwelt  –  Be honest, Mr Schmitz – did you expect the sometimes severe backlash when you didn't confirm participation at R+T 2015? Dan Schmitz – We knew in advance that our decision would not pass without any comments. But that even more manufacturers would follow suit, not necessarily. However, the companies themselves are responsible for these decisions. As Schmitzwerke, we have no further comments. sONNENSCHUTZwelt  – As is well known, after the storm comes the calm, and, with that in mind, at the start of the roadshow last year in Emsdetten, you announced the return to R+T 2018. Was this a step backwards? Schmitz – Absolutely not. We made this decision very deliberately and after long consideration. The alternatives to R+T also played a large

role in this for us. But ultimately, you sometimes have to take a step back to be able to view things at the proper distance. This is exactly how I communicated our decision to return in 2018 at the roadshows as well. sONNENSCHUTZwelt  – What were the alternative considerations to R+T? Klaus Wuchner – Actually, exactly what we realised in Fall 2014 with the roadshows at our showroom locations. The success of these actions proved us right, because with over 900 participants, we were able to welcome a large amount of our dealers at the roadshows. sONNENSCHUTZwelt  – The industry is saying that Markilux has thinned out its dealer network significantly. Wuchner – It is always interesting how the industry mirrors our approach. We have reliably restructured portions of our dealer network. Prior to that, however, we were constantly involved in detailed discussions with our partners. Building walls are becoming more complex and installation requires better qualifications; consultation and sales personnel play important roles in working in this environment. Of course, this also includes showing the most important products in a suitable environment. A number of companies see eye to eye with us in this respect and are in a position to emphasize the value of their service when making sales; many of them are markilux specialised partners. Companies that focus on price when making sales do not really fit into this kind of design. Schmitz – Actually, it is very simple, because a high-quality product also includes a corresponding consulting and installation service. For the majority of our dealers, this is no problem at all. We also support them with extensive training sessions.

Markus Overbeck, Head of Marketing and Communication at Schmitz-Werke GmbH + Co. KG, with the company since 2007

sONNENSCHUTZwelt  – The awning market is highly competitive; the construction market and Internet commerce are also shaking up the market. How do you see the development? Wuchner – Let's look at our own numbers from 2014; this will let us see we are definitely on the right track with our marketing strategy. Around 50,000 units of awnings produced and the best profits in our company's history in the markilux business area make a clear statement. The topic of Roadshow 2015 was digitalisation and demographic change. Naturally the Internet is also a significant focus, specifically as an important information medium in the future for our customers for learning about our products and dealers prior to a sale. sONNENSCHUTZwelt  –  What actions are planned for this? Markus Overbeck– A multi-faceted renovation of our website, which we want to use to incorporate the dealers even more into digital events. Modern customers want to learn about products in advance to go to the dealer with specific ideas. Along with an Internet presence tailored to end customers, we have also introduced an awning configurator which prospective customers can access on their tablets—even on Sundays from their couch. Today, customers determine wheth-

er they have time and when they take the time. This is how we want to respond to these developments. Apart from this, the configurator model is also being used very successfully in the automotive industry. Therefore, users don't have to become accustomed to anything new and can request their favourite awning model and equipment directly from the dealer using a code. wuchner – At this point, we certainly also want to state that this model only works with our deal-

ers. Here as well, we rely on great partnerships and forward the customer requests to the respective dealer in the corresponding region. sONNENsCHUTZwElT – With the initial installation of the showroom in Hamburg came a gradual expansion of this concept to multiple locations. Which strategy are you pursuing here? schmitz – This concept is also structured in multiple levels and ranges from end customer information to dealer support and advance training. Of course, we also carefully selected the locations to cover all important regions in Germany. The Berlin region is currently our only known gap. Overbeck– We also incorporated the showrooms into our sales concept and make the only exception here, because we also sell the area "Textile Living" with chairs, pillows, etc. directly via the showrooms or at markilux.de. sONNENsCHUTZwElT – You just discussed the topic of advanced training; what is the current situation with this? wuchner – Advanced training is an important support for our dealers. Our many locations allow us to drastically reduce the arrival times for training sessions and very often carry them out as day-long events. This also saves costs and time the dealers can use to make sales. This allows us to guarantee that the level of our specialised partners remains high and integrate them perfectly into our brand understanding.

Overbeck– Of course, along with relevant training, we also provide our dealers support with the Internet and give valuable tips on how they can optimise their own Internet presence by incorporating Markilux content or find a suitable agency to reprogram their own website. This area in particular is becoming more and more important for dealers. sONNENsCHUTZwElT – With the MX, you came out with an awning model that is very polarizing. How are sales developing? schmitz – We're very satisfied. As we can see, though people always gripe about price, it's not the most important aspect – the total service package is, as this premium-priced product demonstrates. Here, we are assessing the development of the awning market very positively and are looking forward to the 2015 season. sONNENsCHUTZwElT – We'll see you at R+T in Stuttgart? schmitz – (all three smiling) Absolutely. Of course, we don't want to pass up the versatile selection at R+T and have scheduled multiple days for the trade fair visit. sONNENsCHUTZwElT – Then see you soon and thank you for your time. — The conversation was conducted by SONNENSCHUTZWELT editor, Olaf Vögele, in Emsdetten, Germany. 5

INTELLIGENT PARKING SYSTEMS CREATE AN OVERVIEW

In or out? Many cities suffer from unregulated parking on unsecured car parks. As a result, parking space is now regulated everywhere that residents, employees, visitors and delivery drivers have to compete for the few parking spaces available in densely packed urban areas. Barriers, gates and bollards regulate entry and exit for parking.

_

Management of car parks is by no means simple, particularly in older buildings when barrier systems have to be positioned in the sloping entrances, while nevertheless remaining operable.

taurants with open access for parking their vehicles at a reduced cost or “for free”. The sign “Guest parking only” is rather counter-productive, and is more likely to be seen as an invitation for opportunist parkers. Also, some parking spaces that can be used by visitors to doctors’ surgeries, legal practices or restaurants and many other businesses are essential so that customers can park their car conveniently while they are attending to their business.

Barriers regulate the flow of traffic Unhindered entrance to the parking space is usually no problem unless it becomes an acPhoto: Nice

“Parking” is an ever-present topic which attracts a great deal of conflict, and even political debate in some cases; in this case, objective arguments often do not get sufficient airing. At the same time, shortage of space, drivers circling endlessly on the lookout for a space, risk of accidents and disadvantages for residents represent important reasons for introducing efficient parking space management. Today’s parking space is thus a valuable commodity, for which there is very fierce competition in many areas. Particularly in cities or attractive tourist areas, car drivers frequently use the car parks owned by offices, hotels and res-

Bollards are generally insurmountable obstacles for cars. The control should be performed with line-of-sight contact.

cess point for people who park their car permanently. The decision on which parking time should be subject to payment is one taken by the property owner or the parking space operator. Many service providers such as doctors and lawyers use coded parking tickets to allow their own customers to drive out for free, whereas external users can be penalised with a higher daily rate as an incentive to keep service parking places available for the businesses’ own customers if possible.

Retrofitting with radio Lack of a control cable at the decisive location can very quickly cause costs to spiral or make it more or less impossible to install a barrier even if it is possible to find an electricity supply, e.g. via existing lighting. In this case, the various radio solutions represent an answer, in which the commands are issued by means of appropriate actuators or control modules. Also, cameras can be used nowadays for providing a view of the gate, and these can be integrated into the system via WLAN. As a result, visual monitoring of the barriers or door system is possible, for example if access should only be granted after the visitor has registered his or her presence by ringing a bell. Wireless control nowadays permits a complete solution from the ticket issuing machine at the

Bollard as the ultimate solution If a property or a road, such as a pedestrian zone, should only be blocked off for larger vehicles, it is possible to use recessed bollards. By means of the spacing between the bollards, it is possible to control which vehicle widths should be allowed to pass through the barriers even when the bollards are raised. This establishes clear conditions for access control, because when raised they represent an insurmountable obstacle for motor vehicles and cannot be manipulated using a triangular key as in the case of simple posts. In this way, it is possible to ensure completely who is allowed to drive into the corresponding area and who is not. Movements of the bollard should be displayed by a corresponding warning light in order to avoid unfortunate collisions.

entrance through to the payment procedure at the payment machine and even controlled exit.

At company entrances, barriers, gates and bollards also have a role to play when it comes to deciding who should be able to drive in. Many systems operate with video monitoring.

Modern parking space management systems c onsist of several matching components such as entrance and exit barriers, barriers with ticket readers and a payment machine.

uation is only regulated manually, e.g. via an intercom. In such situations, there can be tailbacks into the traffic flow, this representing an increased accident risk. Corresponding access regulation using an automatically opening barrier allows the garage operator to decide who has to pay at the ticket machine or not when leaving, depending on the customer status and given a corresponding message at the point of entrance. In addi-

tion, it is possible to facilitate entrances and exits involving sharp corners that cannot be seen by the driver, by means of traffic light functions built into the system. Together with corresponding contract strips, light barriers and video monitoring, this enables safe conditions to be created for the users of parking areas without the operator having to spend the time and effort to control the entrance and exit of the car parks. — Olaf Vögele

ENERGY LABEL

The Energy Label simply and objectively shows the energy advantages of combining roller shutter and solar protection systems with windows.

IFT ENERGY LABEL REVISED

Solar protection is now fully on board Solar protection in front of or behind the window not only improves efficiency values but also permits targeted control with adjustment possibilities and automation. What actually happens when solar protection is used can be calculated and evaluated in winter and summer using the revised Energy Label.

With the further development of the Energy Label, solar protection is now taken into account for summer and winter applications, reports the ITRS (Industry Association for Technical Textiles – Roller Shutters – Solar Protection) on its website. This means it is now possible to calculate precisely the additional thermal resistance of a roller shutter or external and internal solar protection in winter as well as the reduction of solar input in summer; in this way, a uniform yardstick has been created for windows in combination with roller shutters and solar protection.

A clear view of things Anyone who sells windows or solar protection has the opportunity to prepare a simple self-declaration of the energy performance of a new window product range and existing windows with or without solar protection, as well as to carry out corresponding calculations. By entering a few key figures, the energy behaviour of the window (configuration of the frame – glass – solar protection) can be calculated and output as an attractively designed label. The energy efficiency classes are allocated from A to G.

Advantages through standardisation With the revision of the product standards DIN EN  (shutters and external Venetian blinds) and DIN EN  (awnings), the additional heat resistance ΔR of the products must be calculated as well and declared on the CE mark; this means the manufacturers of roller shutters and solar protection systems will be provided with a tool for meeting these requirements and representing the energy saving potential of their products 

in a very meaningful way in conjunction with a window. Taking account of the ΔR value in the Energy Label of ift Rosenheim will make this effect clearly and easily understandable to consumers as well when calculating the energy efficiency of windows with roller shutters or solar protection.

Advantages for the roller shutter and solar protection trade This means specialist companies in the roller shutter and solar protection trade are also able to calculate various combination options with roller shutters and solar protection for in situ windows by entering reference values from the corresponding years of manufacture, thereby allowing optimum advice to be given to customers. The further development of the Energy Label was undertaken by ift Rosenheim together with the ITRS, which was represented by its specialist group IVRSA (Industrial Association of Roller Shutters – Solar Protection – Automation). —

Detect and use the characters The revised tool from ift Rosenheim is also suitable for advising customers with regard to roller shutters and solar protection on existing windows, because by entering the corresponding values it is possible to obtain highly meaningful and neutral results for how the corresponding classifications will improve in winter or summer. Scissor arm awnings prove effective not only in terms of projection

Far, further, furthermost Photos: Cisotex

The special design of scissor arm awnings is intended to offer a harmonious interplay between incorporation into the charming appearance of a historic façade and the latest technology. As a highly expressive means of design, they can spectacularly enhance your own patio at home or an old industrial building.

_

Even on older buildings, there are no problems with attachment if the arm brackets can have their dimensions adapted to local conditions and the building substructure.

Particularly in the area of gastronomy and hotels, normal folding arm awnings are frequently inadequate. The projection that can be achieved is often too short, and stability against wind and weather is usually insufficient. “This is particularly where scissor arm awnings can display their advantages to the full when used for large areas,” says Georg Nüssgens, CEO of the Aachen company, Cisotex. Nüssgens points out that using steel for the scissor arms permits a particularly long projection of up to 950 cm and system widths up to 30 metres without significant problems, assuming the base for attachment is suitable.

Continuous sheets are popular for gastronomic applications, because no disruptive split covers are required. The extending guiding tube also reduces sheet sag, and increases the rain protection of the awning.

up to force 9 on the Beaufort scale, depending on the local situation and attachment possibilities, should this be required by the customer.

More projection than width A significant advantage of the scissor arm design lies in the fact that more projection than width is possible with the awnings. This advantage should not be underestimated, especially on narrow building frontages. In a normal folding arm awning, the minimum width of the box is defined by the projection of the awning arms be-

cause the arms have to be accommodated in it when folded together; however, the scissor arms can be folded together forwards, thus allowing a 4 metre wide scissor arm awning to be built with a projection of 6 metres or more. There are clear rules with regard to the attachment height in order to achieve a specified passage height. These dimensions must be defined between the dealer and customer prior to production. The system compensates for this by its high resistance to rain. — www.cisoventex.de

Advantages for gastronomy The continuous roller tube also dispenses with the problem of slit cover blinds that usually have to be employed with large, multi-section awning systems in order to close the gaps between the individual sheets. Also, depending on the configuration of the awnings with regard to wind load, it is possible to achieve different dimensions from those of conventional folding arm awnings. The maximum wind strength that can be withstood by the solid scissor arms made from steel can be 62

The scissor arm awning offers advantages with its compact c onstruction and the opportunity of having a longer projection than width, especially for shop window solutions on narrow buildings.

Eyes open for supplier selection

New requirements of the Eurocode must be complied with Patio roofs continue to be in demand and are prefabricated by the manufacturers and supplied ready for installation; alternatively, they are produced from long materials themselves by specialist firms. Irrespective of which method is used, the Eurocode requirements must be met. Certification is called for even if there will not be any problems with the glass buildings in future.

EN 1090-1 came to an end as well on 1 July 2014, along with the associated transitional period and possibility of parallel use with DIN 18800-7 or DIN V 4113-3. From this date, exclusively DIN EN 10901 applies as a European harmonised standard. Strictly speaking, the introduction of the Eurocode into the building code in Germany on 1 July 2012, steel and aluminium structures have had to be built according to DIN EN 1090-1 from that point onwards.

With the introduction of the Building Products Directive 89/106/EWG in Europe, implementation of the single market for building products should be taken into account; as a result, the previously applicable national standards in steel fabrication, DIN 18800-7 and, for aluminium structures, DIN V 4113-3 have been replaced by the DIN EN 1090 series of standards, parts 1 to 3. As a result, the coexistence period of the European harmonised standard DIN

The manufacturer demonstrates that it meets the requirements for delivering load-bearing components and assembly kits using initial type testing (ITT) and initial type calculation (ITC).

The manufacturer has to establish, document and maintain a FPC system to ensure that products put onto the market have the declared performance characteristics.

As part of initial inspection, the designated party checks whether the established systems (FPC) are suitable for manufacturing standardcompliant components and assembly kits.

As part of continuous monitoring, the designated authority ensures that the established systems (FPC) remain present for manufacturing standardcompliant components and assembly kits.

This is what the entire certification process looks like.

In-plant production control In order for a declaration of conformity to be given, the manufacturer’s in-plant production control must be certified according to system 2+ on the basis of an initial inspection by an independent monitoring and certification body (“notified body”). The technical rules for building the constructions are listed in DIN EN 1090-2 (steel) and DIN EN 1090-3 (aluminium). Depending on the construction to be built and the requirement, there are different regulations as a result of four different implementation classes (EXC 1 to EXC 4).

What must be considered? Aluminium constructions, irrespective of whether they are glass roofs or conservatories, are aluminium supporting structures and thus subject to the provisions of DIN EN 1090 with the requirements for structural stability according to the Eurocodes 1, 2 (load assumptions, previously DIN 1055) and 9 (dimensions and material selection). Weight-bearing wood constructions are subject to Eurocodes 1, 2 (load assumptions, previously DIN 1055) and 5 (dimensions and material selection). The DIN 18008 series of standards applies to dimensions of the glazing (inherent load, snow and wind loads), but it should be noted that TRLV, TRPV and TRAV still apply in some regions of Germany. Generally speaking, the dealer should make sure that its upstream supplier for fabricated systems or long material deliveries is certified according to Eurocode, and it is necessary to check exactly whether planned subsequent adaptations or the delivery of self-produced parts to the certified system is actually possible and permitted without further testing. — Olaf Vögele

Solar protection  Parasols

Parasols offer a wide range of possible uses

trally underneath the surface of the parasol. This type of parasol remains the most widely used variant, because it is straightforward to operate and can be set up quickly. To eliminate the disadvantages of having the “obstructive” post located in the middle of the shaded area, alternatives have been developed in the form of freePhoto: Bahama

As with many other products, parasols are sometimes described in very artistic terms when it comes to referring to the various designs. The most important and classic solution is the traditional parasol with a central post, in which the upright is located cen-

Irrespective of which shapes are required or demanded. Whether round, oval, triangular, rectangular or square, parasols can be manufactured from small to large sizes, with three, four, five metre or even ten metre diameters, in almost all shapes. There are no limits placed on the colour either, because the surfaces of the parasol constructions can be coated according to the many colour palettes or charts from various manufacturers. In the textile sector, the fabric collections with the qualities offered tick almost all boxes, and offer the dealer extensive options when advising potential customers for use on the private patio or in gastronomy. However, what precisely differentiates one parasol from another when it comes to terms such as canopy, swinging or free-arm parasols. As well as the questions regarding attachment and the mounting base, there are some significant points that must be considered here to find the optimum solution for the customer when it comes to criteria used in selecting parasol types and configurations.

Photo: MHT

Irrespective of whether on your patio at home, at the poolside or in a pedestrian area, the versatile shapes, colours and designs of parasols allow almost all external areas to be shaded. However, they can provide effective protection from the rain as well as from the sun.

On patios, weighted parasol stands or sleeves let into the ground offer various possibilities for setting up the parasols safely and taking account of customers’ concerns.

Parasol manufacturers offer solutions for various fastening possibilities with wood structures as well. As with this solution, it is possible to plan optimally for achieving the maximum shading of existing areas.

arm, cantilever or canopy parasols; in these, the upright is located adjacent to the canopy cover in contrast to the classic central post parasols. In these parasols of the same design, the parasol post is located on the outside, thus allowing the parasol area to be used without restrictions. New forms have become established in recent years as well. Tulip parasols with their goblet-shaped designs collect rainwater like a plant and channel it directly downwards through the parasol post into the drainage or a soakaway. This shape allows completely new design aspects to be created when creating patios or gastronomy areas. The term “gastronomy parasol” usually refers to a parasol which, due to its size (at least three metres in diameter), is made of materials and processed in such a way that it can be used continuously in gastronomy. The term is not clearly defined, and it may also be a smaller parasol depending on the manufacturer.

Clearance above the ground or table An important criterion when selecting parasols concerns the clearance above the ground or table. To allow the parasols to be opened without obstruction, without having to clear away tables and chairs, it is essential to make sure that the parasol can be opened and closed above them. The clearance above the ground or table, which refers to the distance from the ground to the lowest point of all spokes without covering, should be at least 80 cm to be in the optimum range.

Fabric coverings A decisive factor when selecting the material will be the colour time and time again, as a result of customers’ design wishes. Of course, water resistance and thus the so-called water column of the fabrics should be considered in this area. Usually nowadays, materials with basis weights of 200 g/m2 to 400 g/m2 are used in various qualities. The choice of materials at most manufacturers is linked to the types and sizes of parasol, so as to ensure continuous and trouble-free operation despite rain and sun. Another interesting aspect of the parasol covering concerns its use as an advertising area. With digital printing, the CI of a company can be adapted to the environment, the wishes of the advertising partners or the brewery in a cost-effective and clearly visible way. The all-round parasol valance offers another opportunity for presenting text and logos in a way that can be seen widely. — Olaf Vögele

DEALING WITH GLARE IS PARAMOUNT

A matter of transparency

_

Few areas of solar protection show such disparities between theory and practical application as that of protection against the sun’s glare. In most cases, exterior solar protection products are also used and defined as protection against glare. Here we explain why this is not advisable.

dent sunlight. For this reason alone, exterior systems are less practical than interior systems, in terms of glare protection. That said, rigid exterior solar protection systems may still be suitable if they are designed to offer adequate glare protection at all times.

Creating transparency and great views while using the appropriate solar protection to enable an active use of natural light and regulation of radiated energy input is all well and good, but at the very least in office buildings and workplaces, glare protection is a vital additional component which has to be addressed. In practical applications, glare protection is time and again seen as synonymous to solar protection. This approach may be valid in some cases, but completely false in others, depending on the conditions of use in each location. Buildings exposed to strong winds always face the problem that solar protection systems are retracted when the winds pick up. This means that office occupants are no longer protected from potential glare caused by inci-

Interior installation seals the deal The advantage of installing interior solar protection systems in the building is undoubtedly that they are unaffected by weather conditions. Interior systems can therefore offer both solar protection and great glare protection. Note that when the building lacks exterior solar protection, the energy input on the façade through solar radiation will warm up the rooms in the building. To select the optimal anti-glare system, it is essential to clarify the requirements in the workplace

and the effect it has on incident light are crucial factors in this analysis. In general, where people are using computers at work, legal requirements, as specified by professional associations, must be observed.

Coated blinds with anti-glare proper Interior coated blinds offer both aesthetic and functional advantages in terms of glare protection. Depending on the transparency, they reduce incident light and prevent glare and reflections on computer screens, framed art and mirrors. Thanks to the transparency of the film, occupants can enjoy unobstructed views of the surroundings. The aluminium-coated external layer of the film also ensures that up to 88 % of solar energy is prevented from entering the room and that indoor temperatures remain comfortable. Films are available with different light transmission and reflection properties, as well as in different colours.

Solar protection  Controls

Does marketing deliver customer benefits?

Building automation is supposed to make things more convenient, or so the manufacturers of Smart Home products claim. However, in many cases the automation misses what the user needs, provides functions that the user does not actually want or often cannot use. In many cases, it is unsatisfactory because no attention is necessarily paid to functions that the user appreciates. As a result, the human being should be at the centre of attention, and the control system be oriented towards him.

_

From straightforward remote control of solar protection through to automatic, energy-efficient control when the building owner is absent, Smart Home systems offer many functions.

operate the room correctly, or feels himself constrained, then something has been done wrong! To do it right, it is first necessary to ask questions to the user. For example, does he want a central button for switching off all the loads in the house with one push of a button? Does he appreciate the purpose of window contacts that switch on the light in the house for five minutes, thereby providing a deterrent effect in case of burglary?

Graph: Prof. Dr. Michael Krödel

Consequently, that means we have to start by analysing what the user wants, and then base the technical solution on that. Unfortunately, customer analysis is often skipped and a specific technical solution is selected (too) quickly. Automation means taking work away from people, i.e. life must be made easier and more pleasant for them. If the (room) automation means that the user can no longer

Are we bringing customers with us?

The main thing about these sample questions is not how the customer answers them individually. What counts is that they will be answered differently by each user. There is no universal solution. Many users place emphasis on energy efficiency functions, whereas others prefer to select security or convenience functions. That means people must be considered as individuals.

What are sensible functions? And what does the user actually want? Customer surveys help with the various target groups. For this purpose, a questionnaire has been prepared with more than 40 questions divided into the subsections of heating, ventilation, lighting, shading, cooling, security and other requirements. Note that there can be a differentiated answer for each question. This is sensible as a means of finding out whether a requirement is something that is regarded as essential, possible or is rejected.

Target customer analyses are helpful

Similar questions were used in two studies conducted by Rosenheim Academy to investigate larger target groups. In one investigation, the average age of the survey population was slightly more than 30 years, and there was almost an

equal distribution between women and men. Graph 2 shows that functions for remote access performed poorly, despite the fact that the participants belong to the smartphone generation. For the roller shutters, there was a high level of interest in automation and group control for the shading – but there was very low interest in being able to control these when out and about. Nevertheless, the shading does already move up automatically in the morning and down again in the evening. The main areas were energy efficiency through individual room control as well as some security and convenience functions. Another study investigated the use of automation for dwellings with elderly residents. The background is demographic change and the analysis from the perspective of the people involved. The age of the survey population was between 51 and 5 years (average: 4 years). Graph 1 shows their evaluation of the functions. The focus here was on security-related functions. The function of “timecontrolled roller shutters” performed surprisingly poorly. This was explained by evaluating the personal interviews. Often, people responded by saying “not as long as I can still do it myself”. From a psychological perspective, this expresses the fear of having too much responsibility taken away, and thus no longer performing a necessary role as a human being. Conversely, this does not mean that you should not offer time-controlled roller shutters to older people. However, this should not be done using the argument that it is a labour saving feature, but rather the security advantages and energy bonuses should be highlighted.

consequences The façade plays an important role in the overall context of automation. Many functions are on-

ly possible if corresponding sensors and actuators are used in the façade. The important electromechanical components here are monitoring elements, electric drives for windows, roller shutters, solar protection, door openers and ventilation elements. In many cases, these sensors and actuators are installed subsequently by electricians or building automation system companies. Window contacts are retrofitted or the cabling for roller shutter drives is routed subsequently. Usually, this approach has optical disadvantages compared to the situation if the necessary sensors and actuators are installed and the cables routed directly by the company that builds the façade. Some companies avoid this topic, however, and thus miss out on corresponding revenue opportunities. If companies in the façade construction sector do actively involve themselves in this topic, they can ensure that it features more significantly in the overall process of planning and implementing building automation.

summary The trend towards automation in buildings, i.e. also room automation, is undeniable. However, it is important to orientate the functions individually towards the user. Only by taking this into account will the user be subsequently satisfied with the automation and appreciate the added value. Companies in façade construction should also gear up to meet this trend and establish the appropriate expertise in consulting and implementation of the topic of integrating the necessary sensors and actuators. — Prof. Dr. Michael Krödel Faculty for Applied Sciences and Humanities, Rosenheim Academy

Solar protection  Lifting, folding and sliding The two-piece lifting/folding shutters can be seamlessly integrated into the façade with their special flush-mounted design, while their swivelling function also provides solar protection when they are moved up.

The trend is on the up

Photo: BeluTec

Folding, sliding, lifting After swinging, folding and subsequently also lifting were added to the original “swinging shutters”. In the meantime, the dimensions have become ever larger, and as shown by the Morning Lane project in London, four-piece lifting/folding shutters with heights and widths of 5 m can be achieved. With a motorised function, the “shutters” provide solar protection, privacy and even sound insulation depending on the design, meaning they carry out many tasks and are highly appreciated by architects.

These solutions are now essential features of architecture in new buildings, especially when large areas have to be shaded. Considering the developments of recent years, it is clear that the market leaders have by no means reached the limits of their development potential. Even now, further developments can be detected relating to the scissor arm designs or parallel folding solutions as a means of making the drive technology as invisible as possible. Other approaches to solutions are being sought for in

recently, lifting has been called for With the folding and sliding shutters, architects are increasingly also on the lookout for flushmounted systems. This is a solution which can currently be best able to be achieved using folding systems that can be attached inside the façade surfaces. Lifting/folding shutters are offered by several manufacturers with very different movement mechanisms. These range from a simple lever mechanism using a wire rope through to complex lock mechanisms by means of which high wind stability can be achieved. Using a patented articulation and locking system, the Lingenbased manufacturer, BeluTec, has killed three birds with one stone by providing wind stability and anti-burglar protection with the locking function, while the articulation system ensures trouble-free opening from the closed position. Depending on the size and application of the system, it is possible for the lifting/folding shutters in this range to be double, triple or quadruple-folded. The resulting projection also achieves a solar protection solution that corresponds to that of a markisolette.

ly propagated to the neighbours, thereby creating a much greater private sphere.

Vertical movements The folding shutter is also based on sideways movement, and its design means that it can be accommodated much more compactly; indeed, even with a structural width within the window width, it only covers a small amount of the glass when in the opened condition. Like with a sliding shutter, solar protection is also achieved with the vertical sideways folding movement of the elements, meaning that there is a view out of the entire window height when the window is partially shaded, thereby increasing the proportion of dazzle-free light.

In apartment construction as well, the sliding shutter with its simple design is increasing in importance.

quired application. These systems can be operated by hand with extremely low forces, making them popular, which means they are preferred in practice above all where cost considerations are important. Because of the masses to be moved and protection against falling, lifting/ folding shutters are only available in motorised variants. In this way, the danger of incorrect operation is largely excluded. Avoidance of dazzle, undesired room heating or even intended solar energy input into the interior are factors that can only be achieved on a longterm basis with these products, like any other solar protection, if a motorised drive is used with a suitable controller. As a result, building owners and architects should consider these aspects at an early stage of their planning, because retrofitting can be highly complicated and expensive. — Olaf Vögele

The sliding shutter scores points with its favourable cost/benefit ratio, and can be used in new and old buildings alike when it is important to achieve privacy and solar protection. The railguided constructions of the sliding elements and special brush seals for the wall connections allow sliding shutters to play a role in acoustic insulation. In the patio area also, the lateral opening and closing with sliding shutters provides much more scope for possible applications. Textile surfaces allow soft, sound-absorbing surfaces to be created, for example, thereby minimising the harsh reflections from panes of glass. Thus, the noise level on the patio is minimised in an agreeable manner, and sound is not so clearwww.glaswelt.de

SOLAR PROTECTION

ROLLER SHUT TERS

CE MARK FOR WINDOWS WITH SHUTTER BOXES

How to proceed with combined windows plus shutter boxes? There have been many discussions and highly diverse opinions expressed on this topic in the recent past. Reason enough for the leading associations in the areas of windows (VFF) and solar protection (ITRS and BVRS) to work together with ift Rosenheim on clarifying the fundamentals of this topic in full and issuing a joint action recommendation. The intention was to provide adequate clarification of this topic for the windows and solar protection sectors.

_

In a structure, building products are frequently fitted jointly with one another, for example façades with windows or windows with shutter boxes and/or corresponding solar protection systems. Basically, according to the building products code (BauPVO) the manufacturer must issue a performance declaration and a CE mark for all products which have a harmonised European product standard, and provide this information together with the product.

Theory versus practice In practice, windows with roller shutter boxes are often supplied to the building site completely preassembled by one or various manufacturers, or else are only assembled into a functional unit onsite. Also, the roller shutter curtain can be either pre-installed or only added once on site. In practice, the question often arises of how to proceed with the CE marking in the case of these elements. EN -+A: states “… This standard applies to windows and doors including all furniture components, seals, glazing as well as … roller shutter boxes, shutters and external Venetian blinds…” The commentary for EN - explains that this expresses the idea that, “… The manufacturer and supplier of the product is responsible for the entire element. This does not mean that elements have to be supplied in a completely assembled condition so they are ready to operate. This standard also applies to elements that are delivered in individual pieces and assembled on site, if such activities fall under the responsibility of a company in the role of manufacturer.” The building products code defines that each building product that is included within a harmonised standard or corresponds to a European technical evaluation must receive a performance declaration and CE mark in order to be marketed. As a result, a customer/dealer can purchase construction elements with a CE mark that only applies to the individual building product, e.g. windows according to EN -, awnings according to EN  or ex

072_073_SSW_2015_E14L01_ROLLLADEN 72

ternal shutters and external Venetian blinds such as exterior blinds and roller shutters according to EN . When windows and shutter boxes with roller shutters or solar protection systems are installed jointly, there are two different possibilities/ cases for carrying out the CE marking.

Case : Windows + shutter boxes from one manufacturer If a window manufacturer combines a window it has manufactured itself with shutter boxes and roller shutter curtains from another manufacturer, the former can also declare it with one CE mark. In Germany, it is generally a requirement for the U-value, the air permeability and radiation properties of the transparent surfaces to be specified for windows. In this case, there is no need to specify the resistance against wind load of the curtain (according to EN ). However, the manufacturer must ensure that the curtain does meet these requirements. In addition, EnEV demands information about the air permeability, i.e. also the gap between windows and shutter boxes. Verification of the key figures for the entire element allows these requirements to be checked and/or verified as well. The values for the entire element may well be improved in this case, for example the U-value when using roller shutter boxes with high thermal insulation properties. Naturally, the manufacturer’s responsibility also extends to the technical documentation (TD with test certificates, WPK values, etc.) and the performance declaration as a precondition for the CE mark on the combined element. If the window manufacturer obtains the roller shutter and box from another manufacturer, the former must request the necessary information and verifications from the latter, and archive this in the TD. Particular attention must be paid to the shading devices, because in inhabited buildings it is necessary to verify the summertime thermal protection according to the Energy Saving Ordinance EnEV or DIN -. According to EN - and GLASWELT

|

Sonnenschutzwelt 

|

www.glaswelt.de

05.02.15 13:32

EN  for external shutters and external Venetian blinds, the overall energy transmittance of the glazing must be calculated with the shading – if both are sold jointly by the window manufacturer. This makes sense, because the building owner or planner of new buildings must verify structural requirements on the building envelope; incidentally, this also applies to extensions > m². There is no need to provide this verification if existing windows are simply replaced.

Case : Windows + shutter boxes from several manufacturers As an alternative, the window manufacturer can state the characteristics for the windows and the roller shutter curtain as well as the shutter box separately according to DIN EN - and DIN EN . In this case, in Germany, it is necessary to provide separate values for thermal and acoustic protection for the roller shutter box, because building regulation list A defines requirements on the roller shutter box (“Directive on roller shutter boxes – RokR”), compliance with which must be indicated by means of a Ü mark. The planner or building owner must then apply these individual values separately when calculating the thermal and acoustic insulation, and the manufacturer must provide the installer with specifications for installation in order to ensure that the air-tight connection between window and roller shutter box demanded by EnEV is achieved. If a specialist/installation or trading company combines windows and roller shutter boxes with roller shutter curtains from different manufacturers, that company is not responsible for the CE marking, unless it is operating as a dealer (with its own window brand) or importer. However, the company must ensure that corresponding performance declarations and CE or Ü marks from the various manufacturers are available for the individual products. The different obligations and duties on the parties involved as well as detailed information and practical examples can be found in the commentary to EN -. During installation, the specialist company is obliged to check whether the systems can be combined with one another, and how the air-tightness between the shutter box and window can be assured according to EnEV, and verified. The verification can be provided by the roller shutter or window manufacturer by means of tested connection systems and processing guidelines, or be given by the installation company through working according to the generally recognised rules of technology, for example on the basis of the information in “guidelines on installation”.

The right combination counts As a result, it does not matter to the specialist/installation or trading company which procedure is selected. What is decisive for that company is to ensure that the systems to be installed have the corresponding CE marking and other necessary verifications. It should be noted that these regulations only apply to shutter box systems and windows. Front-mounted elements and solar protection in the cavity between the window panes are not included in this. From this perspective, there is nothing to prevent a free choice of products when combining windows and shutter boxes. Joint press release by ift Rosenheim, VFF, BVRS and ITRS www.glaswelt.de
