OHL ACQUISITION PAVES THE WAY FOR EXTENDED GLOBAL REACH GEODIS has completed the acquisition of Ozburn-Hessey Logistics (OHL), a strategic move to reinforce GEODIS’ presence in the US logistics market. Headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, OHL is one of the leading 3PL companies in the USA, with annual revenue in excess of €1.2 billion. The new combined structure will generate a consolidated annual turnover of over €8 billion with more than 38,000 employees and 165,000 customers. With around 400 logistics warehouses in the world, additional Freight Forwarding capability and enhanced e-fulfillment expertise, GEODIS has been able to expand its global footprint and build a solid platform to better serve clients.

is recognised for its high quality service level, professionalism and broad global, logistics capabilities. “By offering GEODIS’ European customers our capabilities and opening to our US based customers GEODIS’ global capabilities in the EU and elsewhere, we aim to enhance our existing customer relationships and attract new ones.” Founded in 1951, OHL is one of the leading 3PL companies in the world and has unparalleled experience in direct-to-consumer fulfilment, serving a wide range of business sectors from specialty retail to manufacturing. She continues: “This acquisition allows us to offer a market leading set of solutions on a global level with enhanced expertise at each phase of the supply chain.” Randy Curran, CEO of OHL, said: “The merger of our two companies makes outstanding sense. GEODIS BARBOUR BECOMES GEODIS UK GEODIS Barbour, a long-standing name in the transportation of whisky in Scotland, has become GEODIS UK.

Trade from Barbour European to GEODIS UK. This was a natural progression for the two companies after five years of ownership.

Back in 2010, GEODIS UK bought the Barbour European business, creating GEODIS Barbour, and as a result we have been able to significantly develop our service offering to our customers in Scotland over the past five years.

This transfer will have no impact on the business we do with you as customers. Our operational model will remain the same, as will our staff and the systems we use. The only difference you might notice is the change of name on your invoices – from Barbour European to GEODIS UK.

To further improve our operational efficiencies and reduce administration costs, the two companies were integrated in January by carrying out a Transfer of GEODIS CALBERSON GEODIS BM GEODIS SCO GEODIS WILSON GEODIS LOGISTICS

Kevin Huskie, Regional Manager North, comments: “The driving force behind this change is to ensure that we are operationally efficient and can offer customers the level of service they expect - consistently and beyond expectation - under one strong, GEODIS brand.” If you have any questions, please contact Kevin on 01786 463221 or kevin.huskie@geodis.com

GROWING OUR OWN TALENT GEODIS UK has launched a new apprenticeship scheme as part of our continuing commitment to ‘grow our own talent’ and promote careers within the logistics industry. This year, five apprentices have been recruited between the ages of 16 and 19, based at our sites in High Wycombe, Northampton, West Thurrock, Warrington and Watford Gap for an initial programme of 12 to 18 months. The apprenticeship scheme has been set up in partnership with the Tess Group, a learning and development provider based in Northampton, and will enable apprentices to learn customer service, warehouse and planning skills whilst working towards a level two or three National Vocational Qualification (NVQ). As part of the scheme the apprentices are assigned a full learning and development plan and a GEODIS mentor for the duration of their studies. In addition to

on-going work-based learning, the apprentices will also have the opportunity of in-house personal development and will gain a useful insight into the way businesses operate and the range of GEODIS careers available. Karen Travers, GEODIS Training Advisor, said: “Our apprenticeship scheme is part of our continuous commitment to develop talent and offers young people a great opportunity to learn on the job.” “At GEODIS UK, investment in the development of the next generation of logistics experts is key to our talent pipeline. Our apprenticeship scheme offers a rich, interactive learning experience that we hope will nurture and inspire the potential leaders of the future.”

PARTNERS FOR GROWTH

DELIVERING AFTER DARK

GEODIS in Scotland has introduced a brand new ‘Out-ofHours’ service developed with the retail sector in mind. The new solution is inspired by the success of our ‘Out-of-Hours’ services already in use daily throughout France. Garments from a customer in Spain are transported to regional hubs before being delivered to high street stores across France overnight. The preference for out-of-hours deliveries to the retail sector is growing, particularly for city

centre stores. The benefits can be substantial for both retailers and logistics providers; improved stock flow, fewer conflicts between deliveries and customers on the shop floor, shorter journey times and reductions in fuel consumption. In Scotland, our ‘Out-of-Hours’ service currently operates to five cities, with dedicated out-bound vehicles delivering to stores in Stirling, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee. Each city has several stores that require delivery before 7am

every morning, allowing time for store staff to get their stock out on to the rails before opening time. Kevin Huskie, GEODIS Regional Manager – North, said: “We are always looking to develop new solutions that can be tailored to our customers’ requirements. By developing our ‘Out-ofHours’ service, we have the ideal logistics solution for the retail sector which enables GEODIS to be a growth partner for customers. We hope to extend the service across the UK in the future.”

The ‘Out-of-Hours’ service from GEODIS is just one of the flexible solutions we can offer. If you would like more information on the services that can be tailored to meet your needs, please call our team on 01494 446 541 or email enquiries.uk@geodis.com

THE TURKISH CONNECTION Winning a valuable new contract with URBN Outfitters has led to the creation of a new trade lane from Turkey to the UK. URBN Outfitters, which owns the brands Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People, Terrain, and BHLDN, has awarded GEODIS a contract after working closely with OHL on other global accounts. The new route was specifically designed to enable us to meet the needs of URBN Outfitters and involves us collecting finished clothing products from its suppliers around Europe and Turkey. Christian Weber, Director European Network & Key Accounts for GEODIS UK, says: “We won this new contract through a combination of tried and tested routes across Europe but also having the ability to flex and create a whole new trade lane from Turkey. This was only possible due to our propensity to work with our clients and make things happen quickly and effectively. This really does prove that

we want to grow and develop with our clients, wherever they move in the world.” The new contract involves shipping clothing out of Istanbul direct to the port of Toulon and then via road through France and across the Channel into Dover. From Dover, they are carried on our trucks to our main hub in Northampton, customs cleared, checked and re-palletised. We then manage the inbound vendor collections to URBN’s distribution centre down the road in Rushton. The whole process is managed and shared on our online portal to give URBN Outfitters total transparency and visibility. In addition to the seamless process, we also involve our drivers who proactively manage the collection process by checking items individually, meaning there are no anomalies when the garment shipments arrive back in the UK.

BELGIAN ROAD TAX CHANGES New road tax rules in Belgium will come into effect on 1st April 2016, bringing a change in the way tax is calculated for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). The Flemish, Walloon and Brussels regions joined forces in January 2011 to improve the quality of Belgium’s transportation routes and as part of their plans have reformed road tax to introduce a kilometre tax for HGVs of 3.5 tonnes and above. These new rules mean that any vehicle using the toll roads in Belgium will need an on-board unit (OBU) which will track the kilometres clocked up by each vehicle and a tax will be applied as appropriate.

MIGRANT CAMP AT CALAIS DISMANTLED The FTA and the RHA have welcomed the dismantling of substantial part of the migrant camp in Calais. However, the FTA conceded that moving the whole camp to a different location much further away from the port and Eurotunnel terminal, as has previously been called for, might be a tricky issue.

CHINA-FRANCE: AN UNBEATABLE NEW OFFER GEODIS has combined the expertise of both its Freight Forwarding and Distribution & Express lines of business to launch a new integrated offering between China and France. GEODIS’ China-France product offers customers a comprehensive end-to-end solution; from the consolidation of air flows utilising Freight Forwarding’s expertise in China to the high speed, efficient final distribution through our Distribution and Express network in France. The majority of the air freight is consolidated at Roissy and delivered through the Distribution & Express network within 24 to 48 hours. The re-organisation will benefit French and European customers needing shipments from China within very tight deadlines. “We’re the only ones who can combine this kind of speed with deliveries twice a day anywhere in France,” says Olivier Mélot, Executive Vice-President Distribution & Express. The offer is initially being rolled out between China and France because this commercial air trade lane is a key Freight Forwarding activity. “Our Asia to Europe flows are hugely successful and China is a strategic country,” says Kim Pedersen, Executive Vice-President Freight Forwarding. “Launching this China-France offer shortly after our unique brand was implemented illustrates our goal of strengthening cooperation between our lines of business to serve our customers better.” For more information about the international services provided by GEODIS, please contact your local branch using the information below.
