FOCUS YOUR NEWS FROM GEODIS DISTRIBUTION & EXPRESS

HELLO & WELCOME We are approaching the end of a very eventful year in which the changes we have seen will certainly have long lasting impacts Jamie Cuthbert Managing Director on all our businesses. The EU referendum result in June and a surprise US presidential election result earlier this month has given us lots to think about as we consider our plans for the future. We must wait to learn how the Government will negotiate the UK’s exit. However, as an industry closely involved in European cross border business, we have particular interests as well as a very multi-cultural work force. Most of our industry regulations are applied right across Europe to ensure a level playing field from both the regulatory as well as the legal aspects of drivers’ hours and safety. No doubt much of the existing laws will remain to ensure the services we provide you with today can be provided in the same way in the future. In the meantime we continue to work closely with our network counter-parts in Europe to provide you with a seamless service across the Continent. As you will have read in a previous edition of Focus, we launched an ‘out of hours’ delivery service with a leading retailer at the start of the year and in this issue we look at how we extended

it to cover an additional 33 stores across Southern England. As global leaders in logistics we intend to continue to innovate and lead the way in alternative delivery models. You can read more about this on page two. We continue to work closely with you to maximise the use of IT solutions that provide you with visibility and transparency - a key aspect of how we work to put our customers at the heart of what we do. We have some excellent solutions to help customers wishing to work with us. For more information turn to page three. If you would like to discuss any of the articles featured, or any other topic in more detail please get in touch and I would be delighted to explain more. And of course as the festive season approaches I would like to wish each of you a Merry Christmas and trust that we can continue our partnership into 2017 and beyond. Best Regards Jamie Cuthbert Managing Director jamie.cuthbert@geodis.com 07977 123 977

The power of GEODIS 24-7

DRIVING NIGHTTIME DELIVERIES As one of the world’s largest operators, GEODIS has a responsibility to drive change in the transport and logistics arena. In France GEODIS is very involved in the retail fashion industry and there are several bespoke initiatives which have been set up to ensure we can deliver to small, niche shops in city centres, which are traditionally difficult to reach. In addition, GEODIS drives many environmental initiatives across French cities including Distropolis, which enables the consolidation of deliveries on behalf of a lot of retail companies in each city and deliveries are done at night to take vehicles off the road during the day. It is this expertise which we have brought across to the UK and which has enabled us to deliver night-time solutions across the UK.

RECENT SUCCESS PAVES THE WAY

PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

In February this year we started delivering to five stores in Scotland for one of our fashion retail customers.

In terms of nightly considerations, delivering to stores at night means there is no-one there so it is a minimum of two-man deliveries.

Now that has extended to 33 shops across the South of England – a great success and a solution that clearly works for the customer, as well as GEODIS.

We rely on our well trained drivers to open up stores, turn alarms off and even find the light switch and know where everything is located. Drivers also need to ensure they are quiet and think about their surroundings to ensure they don’t wake people up.

Before we start delivering for our customers, we have a meeting at each and every store to understand what floor to take goods to and how to access the store as this is a key part of the service in order to add value to retailers. The feedback we’ve had from local authorities’ confirms that they can see the benefits in terms of lower emissions and improved transport flows and infrastructure and other local authorities are interested in the work we’re doing too.

NIGHT-TIME CHALLENGES Whilst you might think delivering at night would be easier for operators, there are challenges to these deliveries which we have to overcome and that means engaging fully with our clients and the local authorities. One example is road closures as they often come without much notice. We have to find out where these are going to be and how they might impact on deliveries – particularly in city centres. We also have to liaise with local police so our vehicles aren’t asked to move on when making deliveries in certain parts of the city centre.

It is important goods are taken to the right department, unpacked with all packaging removed so it is ready for when the store opens in the morning. In addition, our drivers collect returns as well.

SEEING THE BENEFITS One of the key things we do for our customers is to send an email KPI report before store opening times each morning to ensure all the nightly activity is relayed accurately. Again, our trained drivers are key to these reports and we ensure any issues reported on. This has immediate benefits not only the store manager as their shop is ready for the day, but the staff in the shop have everything where they want it and customers can get on with shopping without deliveries arriving and interfering with their ‘experience’. If you would like more information on our Out of Hours delivery service, please contact Kevin Huskie, Sales Director, on 07760 886346 or email kevin. huskie@geodis.com
