ounded in 1789, the same year the U.S. Constitution took effect, Georgetown University is the nation’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit university. What began as Georgetown College, a small gathering of 12 students and a handful of professors, has grown into a major international research university that includes four undergraduate

schools, as well as internationally respected business, foreign service, law, medical, and public policy graduate programs. Georgetown University expands on its Jesuit heritage in our commitment to justice and the common good, our intellectual openness, our international character, and in the diversity of our students, faculty, and staff.

Distinguished by its emphasis on global business and immersive approach to practical learning, Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business focuses on developing ethical international leaders who can build a better world for themselves and others. The McDonough School of Business is located in Washington, D.C., the center of world business, politics, and policy. Each year, 1,400 undergraduates, 1,000 MBA students, and 1,200 participants in executive education programs study business with an intensive focus on principled leadership and a global perspective.

Georgetown University

The school was founded in 1957 by faculty in the School of Foreign Service, who believed that an understanding of commercial markets was essential to worldwide political stability. The school was named for Robert Emmett McDonough, a major benefactor and a 1949 graduate of the School of Foreign Service. McDonough was a four-term member of the Georgetown University Board of Directors and held numerous other advisory and alumni board positions. Today, the McDonough School of Business resides in the Rafik B. Hariri Building. This five-story, 179,000-square-foot innovative space was funded entirely by alumni and

supporters and balances the tradition of Georgetown University with forwardthinking functionality. The facility houses 15 classrooms, 34 breakout rooms, 15 conference rooms, 11 interview rooms, a 400-seat auditorium, two large student lounges, and 120 faculty offices. Student space is replete with data ports, flat-screen monitors, and video-conferencing capabilities, allowing for global connectivity. The building is named in memory of the late Rafik B. Hariri, a two-time prime minister of Lebanon, noted philanthropist, and ardent advocate of education.

Global Alumni Network Georgetown’s alumni network comprises more than 175,000 alumni from all 50 states and 110 countries. As alumni of Georgetown McDonough, you will be inducted into a supportive global network that is invested in your future and serious about your success. Georgetown alumni provide powerful career- building support and work closely with the MBA Career Center. Alumni regularly return to campus to hire MBAs for summer internships and post-MBA positions, prepare students for challenging MBA interviews, and provide industry insight to those making career transitions.

“Georgetown MBA represents and promotes academic rigor, ethical integrity, and a strong sense of community. These values are now a part of my personal brand and will stay with me throughout my career.” Diana Bernal MBA Candidate, Class of 2013 Corporate Banking Summer Associate Citibank, New York

eorgetown University’s McDonough School of Business integrates international experiences throughout its curriculum. From the very start, the Fulltime MBA Program is filled with classroom and experiential learning opportunities that will develop you into an innovative, principled, and entrepreneurial leader with a global perspective to make a substantial impact on business and society.

Global Experience As a first-year MBA student, you will begin your studies with a three-week, highly

integrated course on the Structure of Global Industries led by internationally renowned professors of world trade and economies. Later courses explore the political and cultural realities of doing business across—and even without—borders. In the fall of your second year, you will begin The Global Business Experience, the signature capstone of the Georgetown McDonough MBA. Through classwork and hands-on experiences consulting for organizations around the world, you will demonstrate the core competencies, cultural awareness, and global mindset needed to succeed in business. Past Global Experience

Study Abroad Opportunities

6

Georgetown McDonough has partnered with top international universities to provide you with additional opportunities to expand your global mindset. During the fall of your second year, you can study in one of five overseas locations: IAE Business School in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Fudan University in Shanghai, China; London Business School in England; HEC Paris in France; or ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain. Each of our partners provides a global approach to business and offers courses in both English and their native language.

Georgetown University

You also can study in England during the summer between your first and second year through the six-week, six-credit, Graduate Business Program in International Management at Oxford University. As a participant, you will gain first-hand knowledge of international management from a European perspective. As an exchange student, you are fully immersed in the student community and have full access to career management resources at the host institution. Applications are accepted in the spring of the first year for fall enrollment the second year.

International Business Diplomacy Certificate The Karl F. Landegger Program in International Business Diplomacy (IBD) was created at Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service to train a new generation of leaders in

international business, public policy, and business-government relations. A highly selective honors program, the IBD has criteria for admission that include academic performance, economics background, foreign language proficiency, international experience, and an interest in a transnational career. Students apply in the fall of the first year for enrollment in the introductory IBD gateway course in the spring semester. Those who earn a grade of A- or better will be invited to pursue the certificate. Students use their Georgetown MBA program electives to fulfill course requirements for the IBD Certificate.

Global Social Enterprise and Development Graduate Fellows Program Georgetown University’s Social Enterprise and Development Graduate Fellows Program is a collaboration between the Global Human Development program of Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service (SFS) and the McDonough School of Business. This program is designed to give students a thorough understanding of the role of social enterprise and social entrepreneurship in promoting sustainable development and to prepare them to become leaders and change-agents in a rapidly changing world. Graduates of this fellowship program will gain a deeper understanding of their entrepreneurial aptitude while being prepared to develop, critique, and lead new business strategies in both for-profit and nonprofit organizations. They will gain the skills to critically assess business proposals for viability and impact as a potential donor or investor. Students apply in the fall of the first year.

“I chose Georgetown because of the leadership opportunities afforded by the MBA program that empower students to take an active role in charting their own rewarding MBA experience. If you identify an opportunity to create value, Georgetown gives you the room and resources to make it happen.” Vanessa Ting, MBA ’08 Co-Founder & CEO, Buyerly, LLC

The World is Your Campus “There is a truly palpable sense of community at Georgetown. We genuinely care about each other’s success, and the program provides students ample opportunity to get involved, become leaders, and leave behind a unique legacy.” Jennifer Tindle, MBA ’12 Director, Financial Planning and Analysis, KIPP NYC

A Global Student Body Georgetown McDonough students’ professional achievements, personal accomplishments, and varied work experiences are as diverse as their geographic locations. The global mindset of the student body is a key feature of the Full-time MBA Program, as evidenced by 77 percent of the Class of 2014 reporting living, studying, and/or working outside of their home country and the entire student body representing 45 countries from around the world. Georgetown MBA clubs also reflect the international spirit of our program and promote a variety of social, cultural, and professional activities for the entire student body. Organizations include:  the Asia Business Consortium;  the European Business Association;  the Greater China Business Association;  the Japan Society;  the Latin American Business Association;  the Middle East Graduate Association; and  the South Asian Business Association.

8

The Full-time MBA Program’s Student Government Association (SGA) board has a vice president for international students, a position designed to represent international students and encourage cultural awareness within the entire student body. Each year, the SGA hosts the International Festival, an event celebrating the diverse heritage of students enrolled in Georgetown’s Full-time MBA Program. One of our most popular activities, this event draws nearly 300 participants to an enriching day of ethnic foods, costumes, music, and fun for everyone.

Academics

T

he Georgetown Full-time MBA Program prepares you to lead in the global business environment. The curriculum immerses you in real-world issues, challenges you to prove yourself in an international consulting project, and enables you to build the skills necessary to reach your career goals. The curriculum cuts across the functional areas of business and emphasizes the skills employers value most: an understanding of the global business environment, the ability to think analytically and creatively, the confidence to take on the

unknown, the capability to work on teams, and a focus on ethical leadership.

Ethics and Honor Code The Georgetown Full-time MBA Program prides itself on the high ethical standards of our students and community. For that reason, our students abide by three primary standards of conduct during their time at Georgetown. First, all Georgetown University students are held to a campus-wide Ethos Statement. The Ethos Statement outlines the values that stand

Georgetown University Ethos Statement Choosing to come to Georgetown University means joining a distinctive community. As a Catholic and Jesuit University, Georgetown places special emphasis on the dignity and worth of every person and the love of truth. Membership in this community carries with it high expectations regarding the ways in which each person will act both within and beyond Healy Gates. In particular, students are expected to honor the following commitments in all their actions:  A commitment to the highest standards of honesty and personal integrity both inside and outside the classroom.

10

 A commitment to treat others in a respectful manner, regardless of differences such as race, religion, nationality, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.

as the foundation upon which the university’s Code of Student Conduct is supported. Further, Georgetown MBA students also abide by the Academic Integrity System, which outlines the expectations for appropriate study and collaboration in the classroom. Finally, Professional Standards: Policies & Procedures details expectations for the professionalism of all MBA students. These standards serve as the foundation of our ethics and honor code within the MBA program and will be reviewed in detail at MBA Orientation in August.

Fall Registration You will automatically be registered by the MBA Program Office for your first semester of MBA coursework. Schedules will be announced in mid-July. Additional information regarding the fall course schedule is available on the Welcome Website.

Cohorts and Study Teams Your class will be divided into four cohorts (Hoya, Saxa, Blue, and Gray) that take all core courses together. Cohorts are specifically designed to encourage inclusion and community within your MBA class and tend to become a cohesive “family” of students who support and challenge one another throughout the program. A series of events take place throughout the year that provide an opportunity for your group to engage in friendly competition to see which cohort comes out on top. Cohorts will be announced in mid-July. In addition, your cohort is broken into study teams of four or five students for group projects and support. Your teams will work together in all core classes and will be reassigned every term. Your first study team will be announced shortly before classes begin.

Engaging Leadership The McDonough School of Business’ focus on principled leadership is evident both inside and outside of the classroom. In addition to coursework in leadership and business ethics, students have unparalleled access to world and business leaders. Outside the classroom, you will attend several speaker events designed to expose you to top leaders from the business community. Recent speakers have included: Sandy Douglas, President of Coca-Cola North America Fabrizio Freda, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Estée Lauder Companies Julius Genachowski, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission

Holistic Learning The Georgetown MBA provides students with a variety of learning opportunities in both simulated and real-world business environments to gain practical experience. Examples include student organizations such as the Graduate Student Investment Fund, class projects in courses such as the Small Business Clinic, and workshops such as Georgetown’s Case Certification Program.

Opening Term The Opening Term is a three-week, intensive term designed to introduce students to the academic foundation of a Georgetown MBA. Accounting Fundamentals meets once per day, instructing students in the fundamental language of business through the use of realworld financial statements that will continue into the fall term. The Structure of Global Industries

(SGI) is a hands-on, experiential course that meets twice per day to give you lessons in economics, ethics, and communications necessary for understanding the world economy. SGI begins with the concept of a “blank slate, where you are a business leader exploring new opportunities in a global industry. The Opening Term dives deeply and rigorously into the topics that will distinguish you as a Georgetown MBA, globally minded with a solid foundation in the fundamentals of business.

Core Coursework Core classes at Georgetown are meant to give you both breadth and depth in business topics that the professional world expects from MBA graduates. Offered primarily in semester-long, 12-week increments, the core includes subjectbased classes such as Marketing, Finance,

Statistics, Accounting, and Operations along with integrated classes such as Leadership and Social Intelligence, Analytical Problem Solving, Principled Leadership in Business and Society, and Global Business Environment. The Georgetown MBA core curriculum provides you with the tools necessary to succeed in business and also the critical thinking skills and integrated mindset needed to apply those concepts as leaders in your chosen professions.

Elective Coursework As a Georgetown MBA student, you earn a degree in general management that allows you to customize your coursework according to your personal and professional interests. Electives are offered in six-week increments called modules and span six primary subject areas: Accounting and Business Ethics,

Intensive Learning Experience (ILE) Intensive Learning Experiences (ILEs) are an essential part of the new MBA curriculum and provide the opportunity for concentrated learning and engagement on a diversity of topics. Some of the ILEs will take advantage of innovative pedagogies encouraged by a concentrated time format, such as experiential learning, project work, and off-campus activities. Other ILEs may make use of more conventional teaching techniques. ILEs are offered in a one-week “block” format and occur the week before spring break.

If you have earned professional credentials or completed extensive training in a particular functional area, you may petition the Waiver Committee to take an exam that tests core knowledge in the subject. The standards used to evaluate waiver petitions are very high, and the exam used to test out of a course is quite rigorous. Course waiver exams are available for ACCT500: Accounting Fundamentals and OPIM550: Managerial Statistics. Information about waiver exams will be available on the admitted student Welcome Website (see Next Steps).

Books and Course Materials Most classes require a textbook and/or course pack (cases/readings). Textbooks can be purchased either in the bookstore or from online sources. Information regarding the purchase of course packs comes directly from your professor. A list of the fall required course materials will be available in late July. You will have sufficient time to buy them before classes begin. You will need to purchase a financial calculator for the fall semester. D.C. Neighborhoods and Nightlife Washington, D.C., and nearby Maryland and Virginia are home to many vibrant neighborhoods that make up this international region. Students generally live in the Georgetown neighborhood, Dupont Circle, or Arlington, Va. Adams Morgan: Eclectic Adams Morgan is where buttoned-up D.C. lets its hair down. The neighborhood is a global village, lined with restaurants serving cuisine from around the world, and at night transforms into one of the city’s hottest spots for music, dancing, and fun. Capitol Hill: Neighborhood landmarks include the United States Capitol, Supreme

Georgetown University

Court, Library of Congress, and more. This largely residential area has great restaurants, a terrific year-round farmers market, and is in close proximity to the Atlas District – a hipster haven for drinks and fun. Union Station— D.C.’s Amtrak station—is also located here. Downtown/Chinatown: A crossroads of culture and entertainment, downtown D.C. shares the streets with trendy restaurants and lounges. Chinatown is nestled in the heart of the city, which also is home to the Verizon Center, an arena that hosts college and professional sports action, including Georgetown Hoya basketball, and concerts all year. Dupont Circle/Kalorama: With beautiful Victorian architecture, charming cafes, and trendy shops and galleries, Dupont Circle is quintessential Washington, D.C. Bistros, bars, and boutiques line the streets, and the largest concentration of international embassies sits just northwest of the circle, giving the neighborhood an extra dash of global flavor.

Foggy Bottom: Nestled between Dupont Circle, Georgetown, and the White House, this corner of the city plays host to diplomats, dignitaries, and celebrities who visit neighborhood landmarks such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the U.S. Department of State, and the Watergate. Foggy Bottom stretches down to the Potomac shoreline, welcoming runners, bikers, and water sports enthusiasts to the southernmost point of Rock Creek Park. Georgetown: Founded in 1751, historic Georgetown is known for its designer and mainstream boutiques, picturesque historic house museums, and its seemingly endless list of cafes, restaurants, and bars. Walk in the footsteps of presidents, scholars, athletes, and socialites as you take in the sights and stories of this action-packed waterfront neighborhood. Arlington, Virginia: Arlington is home to the Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima), Arlington National Cemetery, the Pentagon Memorial, and the U.S. Air Force Memorial. Neighborhoods in Arlington include Rosslyn (just minutes from Georgetown) and Clarendon, which boast great shopping and restaurants. As you begin your search, be sure to review the Georgetown Housing Overview, located on the Welcome Website (see Next Steps).

Transportation/Parking Getting to campus: Public Transit – Metrorail and Metrobus Washington’s Metrorail is a clean, convenient subway system with three stops within a 20–30 minute walk to Georgetown: Rosslyn, Foggy Bottom, and Dupont Circle. On-Campus Parking Generally, parking is not available for students on campus. However, a limited number of daily parking spaces are available in the Southwest Garage, which MBA students sometimes use in emergency situations. Students (with valid ID) may park in the Southwest Garage after 5 p.m. for a fee of $3. Parking in the Southwest Garage is free on the weekends. More information can be found at otm.georgetown.edu.

Registering Your Car Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland require automobile inspections prior to registering a vehicle. It is beneficial to register your car locally if you plan to park on the street, as many neighborhoods require residential parking permits (neighborhood stickers), which extend the allowable parking time for local residents and may overrule restrictions on available parking spots. Students who choose not to register their car locally may still obtain a “reciprocity parking permit” for select areas. To learn more about parking permits and reciprocity agreements in the District, go to dmv.dc.gov/serv/parking.shtm. Capital Bike Share With the installation of bike lanes, bike signals, and Capital Bikeshare, the nation’s capital has become very friendly to cyclists. Capital Bikeshare provides an alternative to your commute by offering bicycle access 24 hours a day, seven days a week at more than 175 stations across the D.C. area. To learn more about this membership-based service, visit capitalbikeshare.com.

Fitness Facilities All full-time students automatically are enrolled in the Yates Field House. This oncampus recreation center includes cardio equipment, tennis and basketball courts, and a pool. Information about Yates Field House, including fees, can be found at yates. georgetown.edu. Partners Association The Georgetown MBA Partners Association provides a social outlet, support system, and professional network for the partners’ spouses, and significant others of Georgetown MBA students. The purpose of this group is to help significant others transition to living in Washington, D.C., and adjust to the demands of the MBA schedule and lifestyle. For members who are new to the Washington, D.C., area, the association also can help overcome the challenges of moving to a new city, finding a new job, and making new friends.

Child Care Georgetown University has an on-campus child care facility, Hoya Kids, for children 18 months of age and older. They are dedicated to providing the highest-quality child care in a safe, nurturing, and loving environment. (Note: Hoya Kids often has a waiting list for enrollment.) Supporting documentation includes financial materials demonstrating your ability to meet

Georgetown University

the expense estimate for the first year of the program. If you will be attending Georgetown using a status other than F-1 or J-1 sponsored by the university, you must complete the online IQ. You will not need to submit any additional information. While there is no specific deadline for submitting your I-20 paperwork, most students submit the I-20 request at the same time they submit their deposit. Please keep in mind that it usually takes up to two weeks upon receipt of complete paperwork to process your I-20 or DS-2019 form and that OIP will not begin to process your I-20 until your deposit is received. You will then need to consider how much time it will take to schedule an appointment with your U.S. Embassy or Consulate and receive your student visa. You may enter the United States with your Georgetown I-20 or DS-2019 form up to 30 days before the start date listed on your document. More information on the I-20 process can be found here: oip.georgetown.edu.

Communication Tools for Success: Pre-MBA Business English Course

“I was motivated to attend

You will find the first semester of the MBA program to be intense and fast paced. Even the most proficient speakers of English have some difficulty acclimating to the rapid speech patterns of American professors and students. Success in the classroom and in the workplace depends upon your ability to take in large amounts of information and to understand rapid-fire communication using specific business terminology and concepts. In order to sharpen your skills, we are pleased to offer Communication Tools for Success, where you will learn practical techniques and effective strategies for reading large volumes of business writing quickly and efficiently; understanding rapid speech, unfamiliar accents, and idiomatic language; negotiating project ideas and plans with your study group; writing clear analyses of case studies; and researching and presenting a live case study. Communication Tools for Success will run in late July through early August with an application deadline in late May. Application details will be sent out in March, or you can contact our partner, the Center for Language Education and Development, at cled. georgetown.edu/programs/professional/premba.
