Preparing Today’s Global Leaders Leadership is no longer limited to the executive suite or the boardroom — critical thinking and novel approaches to decisions, actions, and leading at all levels are essential in the era of globalization and rapid changes in technology. The Executive Master’s in Leadership (EML) at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business teaches students the art and science of effective leadership behaviors necessary to address the critical issues facing business and society. You will undergo a transformational 12-month journey that is:
An Innovative Approach
Employing a diverse set of delivery mechanisms — classroom learning, residencies, peer groups, and personal coaching — the EML program will teach you how to think versus what to think. This combination of traditional and field experiences teaches our graduates how to enact strategies to effect change within their organizations, achieve their goals, and improve their lives and the lives of those around them.
Evidence-based
Leveraging scientifically informed leadership lessons provides you with the highest quality principles and practices. Developing critical thinking teaches you how to learn rather than just what to learn.
Rooted in Principled Leadership
Applying ethical frameworks will ensure your leadership decisions and actions meet today’s complex challenges and enhance both business and the broader society.

This access, along with our globally focused curriculum and enriching opportunities abroad, ensures you are ready to compete in today’s international business environment.
Renowned Expertise

EML’s diverse faculty includes world-class scholars, professionals with broad leadership experience, and entrepreneurs who mentor students looking to start new ventures.
Jesuit Tradition
As the nation’s oldest Catholic institution of higher learning, Georgetown was founded on the Jesuit principles of equality, respect, and cura personalis — care for the whole person. Our culture encourages collaboration, close friendships, and learning inside and outside the classroom.
Georgetown EML offered a ‘reset’ for me “ The professionally and allowed me to think about being a
corporate ‘intrepreneur’ and then, later, a founder of a company I built from 2011-2017. EML helped me create a management philosophy and playbook to build great teams of thought leaders.

global residency gave our cohort an opportunity to “ The apply our leadership training in a place that was, quite
frankly, a little out of our comfort zone. We were in a different country, with a different culture, applying skills to help make a difference in their lives. I still communicate with my team’s client in South Africa. It was an experience that will affect me for the rest of my life.

Transformational Experiential Learning Each EML residency is carefully designed to challenge you to integrate and apply experience and learning in simulated and actual leadership scenarios.
Opening Residency: Evidence-based Leadership
Begin thinking more deeply and systematically about your perspectives on leadership and the arenas in which you plan to demonstrate leadership.
Closing Residency: Bringing It Home
This residency places significant emphasis on the understanding and application of selected Jesuit disciplines such as contemplative action and daily examination. Before attending the closing residency, you will have created a personal leadership action plan, which will help you prepare for discussions about future growth and success as a leader.
Global Residency: Leading in an International Context
A signature Georgetown McDonough experience, the global residency is guided by the pedagogical premise that international leadership cannot be learned in theory, in the classroom, or solely with feet planted firmly in the United States (or any other home country). During this residency, you will implement concepts learned in the classroom to a consulting project in an international setting partnering with government, NGO, school, and private sector organizations to solve real leadership problems.
EML global consulting projects range in scope and focus. Below are some recent student projects and organizations:
Cape Town, South Africa Developing New Generations of Engaged Citizens with MEET Africa • Engaging Emotional Intelligence, Envisioning, and Ethics in Schools with Elsie’s River School District • Leading through Entrepreneurship with Raymond Ackerman Academy of Entrepreneurial Development
Nairobi, Kenya Strengthening STEM Learning through CSR with BDO East Africa • Overcoming Solar Power Barriers to Adoption with Barefoot Power • New Microfinancing Models for Dairy Farmers with Inuka Africa Ltd. • Sustainability and Workers Rights in the Tea Industry with Ndarawetta Tea Factory Limited (NTFL)
