> WELCOME It is my pleasure to present the 2017 Master of Science in Finance (MSF) Program Report. This report provides an overview of the program, profiles our students and partners, and shares employment statistics from the first two graduating classes. My colleagues and I launched the MSF program in January 2014 after a nearly two-year development period involving many of our leading faculty and administrators. As the first technology-intensive program at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, we have shown how to use technology to increase educational quality and to attract bright and motivated students from all over the world who need the flexibility to work outside the Washington, D.C., area. Over the past three years, we have continued to innovate with the launch of the MSF Career Management Center, the MSF On-campus Orientation, the MSF Student Investment Club as part of the Peeptrade University Challenge (where our students compete against peers from other top business schools), the MSF Consulting Clinic, the MSF On-campus Global Consulting Project Intensive Weekend, and many other activities and resources. Besides continuous program innovation, we remain committed to recruiting students from a wide range of academic backgrounds and business experiences. For example, some students have MBAs from top universities and have worked at the most preeminent firms in the world, while others have no formal business

training or experience. Moreover, some seek to advance in their current career fields, while others pursue a career change made possible by obtaining the MSF degree. What all of our students share is a passion for mastering the most challenging aspects of business education, an aptitude for learning this material quickly, and a desire to be leaders and entrepreneurs. We believe these features truly set us apart, and we are proud of the accomplishments of our students and alumni. I stated in last year’s inaugural report that we set the bar high but would continue to raise it. We have done just that. MSF is now the largest graduate program at Georgetown McDonough after the MBA program, and our most recent incoming class has the highest average GMAT of any part-time program on campus. Please visit our website, msf.georgetown.edu, and follow us @GeorgetownMSF to learn more about our program. ALLAN EBERHART, PH.D.

LEARNING

THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM Throughout the academically rigorous 21-month program, students complete core, advanced, and selective courses in addition to participating in two on-campus residencies and one international residency. Altogether, students complete 32 credits to receive the MSF degree. ANYTIME MEDIA Our technology-intensive program flips the classroom in an innovative way. Each week, students work through the course material — at a time of their choosing — using our Anytime Media on the course website. The primary component of this technology is the Professor Presentations, a sequential series of high-fidelity videos in which professors speak directly to students with a virtual whiteboard. Each Professor Presentation comes with a searchable transcript so students can find key words or phrases and, with one click, be taken to the corresponding moment in the video. Anytime Media is available to alumni and serves as an online library of resources that can be used long after classes officially conclude.

Depending on the course, Anytime Media also consists of practice problems (many with videos where the

course professor shows strategies for how to solve the problem that supplements the written solutions), team discussion posts, and other material. CORE COURSES » Financial Markets » Financial Accounting » Corporate Finance » Financial Econometrics » Advanced Corporate Valuation and Modeling » Principled Financial Leadership ADVANCED COURSES » Options and Risk Management » Investments and Fixed Income SELECTIVE COURSES » Private Equity Real Estate » Advanced Financial Modeling » Big Data »F inancial Statement Analysis *Future selective courses may differ from current courses.

MSFLIVE IN THE BLENDED CLASSROOM The weekly culmination of each course unit is the 90-minute MSFLive session in which students typically participate in a case discussion with their professor and classmates. Cases involve real-world business problems faced by actual firms and require students to apply what they have learned from the assigned readings and Anytime Media. Moreover, students often use what they have learned to address pressing business challenges in their daily work.

With our Blended Classroom, students can attend MSFLive sessions on campus or online and receive the same educational experience. Despite their geographic distance, students and professors interact as if they are next to one another. ▲ (Top) Professor Lee Pinkowitz talks with students before an MSFLive session. “ My work takes me overseas. While I have attended a live session in Washington, D.C., I primarily participate in MSF online. During the course of the program, I have attended MSF remotely from several foreign countries.” ALEX AKAR, MSF ʼ17 (Right)

ON-CAMPUS ORIENTATION This orientation provides an opportunity for incoming students to meet their classmates and faculty so they can hit the ground running with their first course. It also brings students together on campus to learn about available resources.

ON-CAMPUS RESIDENCY This accelerated course engages students in an in-depth team case experience. Students also develop their leadership skills through seminars on important business topics. They apply a high-level view of finance, strategy, and other fundamental business concepts to create a presentation that is judged by subject matter experts. The residency also allows students to deepen relationships with peers, network with faculty, and access all of the resources and services offered within the McDonough School of Business.

GLOBAL CONSULTING PROJECT In this signature Georgetown McDonough experience, student consulting teams work together to solve a pressing business problem facing non-U.S. organizations and Fortune 500 companies with operations overseas. The students work for approximately six weeks on the project and then travel abroad to their client’s facilities to present recommendations to senior leadership. Students have visited the Johannesburg, South Africa, offices of Barclays, Coca-Cola, Rio Tinto, Standard Bank, and other multinational and regional organizations. In addition to company presentations, students enjoy visits to historical and cultural sites, taste the local cuisine, and learn about the connections between our international consulting partners and local communities. ▲ (Top) Students with executives from Merchant Capital after presenting their recommendations to the company. MORE THAN JUST AN ONLINE COMMUNITY Our program boasts a community unheard of in traditional online education programs. Students start getting to know one another during the On-campus Orientation, and these friendships continue to strengthen throughout the program.

The weekly MSFLive sessions and on-campus events help set the program apart. Our students take these opportunities to network and learn from one another academically, professionally, and socially. They appreciate the added value of diversity among their classmates’ academic and professional backgrounds. In addition, there are regular informal gatherings after MSFLive sessions as well as occasions when non-local students gather to participate in MSFLive sessions together.

“ This program provides a unique opportunity to interact with immensely interesting and intelligent students from across the globe. It is especially rewarding to see how quickly they blend into the Georgetown MSF community we have created with them.” LUKE WEICHBROD, Associate Director, Master of Science in Finance Program

MANAGEMENT

The MSF experience prepares graduates for internal promotions within their current companies or for new positions in finance, consulting, and related fields. Since much of my work centers on building strong relationships with employers and external partners, I frequently speak with hiring managers and recruiters. Time and time again, they indicate that they are most impressed by the depth of knowledge above and beyond a traditional graduate business degree that our students and alumni possess. Indeed, the ability of our students to succeed in their chosen positions is a testament to their preparation, dedication to the program material, and the initiative they take to manage their own career strategies. I encourage employers to get to know our students and alumni and see what makes them highly competitive hires who are ready to tackle the most challenging finance, consulting, and business situations. > CAREER

ENGAGEMENT

The MSF Program is designed specifically for busy working professionals. Those seeking to pivot in their careers need creative ways to gain additional experiences and develop new skills that will increase their employability. The MSF program offers innovative experiential learning opportunities to allow students to gain this experience while still employed full time. MSF Consulting Clinic: Consulting is a highly desired field for MSF graduates. The MSF Consulting Clinic allows students to gain practical consulting experience while maintaining their full-time jobs. In summer 2016, teams of MSF students worked through a complex mergers and acquisitions scenario for Deloitte and provided executive-level briefings and recommendations to our company liaison, an MSF alumnus.

PeepTrade Challenge: In fall 2016, Georgetown MSF students were invited to participate in the first PeepTrade University Challenge, an investment competition that pitted MSF students against their peers from the University of Chicago, Dartmouth, INSEAD, London Business School, MIT, Princeton, and University of North Carolina. During the competition, the team met weekly and corresponded regularly. The competition concluded with an all-expense-paid trip to the University of Chicago where the student teams presented their strategy to a panel of judges and the other teams. ▲ (Top) Members of the PeepTrade University Challenge Team with MSF administrators and faculty advisors.
