Thought s from my notebook
Georgian Life, PO Box 11, Collingwood Ontario L9Y 3Z4
This month we celebrated some pretty amazing folks who enrich the community life by contributing as volunteers to the improvement of arts, social, environmental, cultural, health and recreational conditions at the New Year’s Mayors Levee’s in both Wasaga Beach and Collingwood. We did lose a dedicated volunteer, Roy Wilson; Wasaga Beach’s first town crier. Roy will be remembered by family and friends for his outstanding commitment as ambassador for Wasaga Beach. Mother Nature sure can’t make up her mind this winter. Though the weather has been unpredictable, the outdoor festivities continue! Whether you plan to Wiggle Waggle Walk with the four legged friends on the GTHS doggy hike, raise funds on your skis for your favourite charity, go hard in a bonspiel, take in some live entertainment or dine fireside at a local restaurant, you won’t have trouble finding something to do! With both Valentine’s Day and Family Day this month, be sure to stop and appreciate your loved ones that make everyday wonderful. We went to print before Groundhog Day on February 2nd, but my prediction is it will be cloudy when Wiarton Willie emerges from his burrow and spring will come early, so get out there!

Happy Hummus Hummus is a high fibre, high protein dip, made from chickpeas. It makes a satisfying, energizing snack served with fresh veggies. While many readymade varieties are available, it’s really easy to make it yourself. In this recipe the addition of turmeric elevates classic hummus from healthy snack to superfood delight. Turmeric is the most potent anti-inflammatory spice you will find in your kitchen. In addition to fighting inflammation, turmeric has anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, anti-microbial and anti-atherosclerotic properties. Curcumin is the main constituent of turmeric and is responsible for its health benefits and vivid yellow colour. Curcumin may be helpful in the treatment and prevention of chronic pain, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer and cardiovascular disease. While the culinary use of turmeric spice is totally safe - and totally delicious therapeutic doses of turmeric extract (curcumin) may interact with medications and may be unsafe for people with certain health conditions. Like any natural health product, curcumin should only be used under the careful supervision of a naturopathic physician or other qualified practitioner. Ingredients: 1 can of chickpeas, drained 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp sesame seed paste 1 clove of garlic, minced 1 tsp freshly grated ginger root 1 tsp turmeric ½ tsp cumin A few pinches of sea salt Juice of 1 lemon 1 tbsp maple syrup (optional) Procedure: 1. Place all ingredients into a food processor. 2. Process until a smooth paste forms, adding more oil or lemon juice if needed. 3. Adjust spices to suit your taste buds. 4. Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves and serve with fresh veggies.

Living Downstream Be the Change Film Series kicked off the New Year with Living Downstream. This poetic film follows ecologist and cancer survivor Sandra Steingraber PhD during one pivotal year as she travels across North America, working to break the silence about cancer and its environmental links. Living Downstream is a powerful reminder of the intimate connection between the health of our bodies and the health of our air, land, and water. Photos: Dave West Photography

Dynamic Décor - How to achieve a great look! ou spend much of your life inside, in your home or office. Are the walls getting a tad bleary and closing in on you? Jazz things up by decorating or redecorating in the latest colors and styles!
If you don’t want to go the whole hog, try simply updating your current artwork and accessories for a whole new look! Do you know how to find artwork that would be the perfect fit? Team up with a professional framer who has the expertise to help you choose just the right frame and artwork, no matter what colour scheme you prefer – soft, muted, elegance, rich jewel tones, or wild and wacky neon. Artwork can compliment your home décor in so many different ways. If wood finished furniture is your choice, a frame that closely matches might be the way to go. If you have a sleek, modern look, painted or metal frames might be your best bet. Maximize the mats! Including one or more mats in the framing package can add interest and colour to the design, and mat board is available in a wide variety of colors and textures. Window mats are a very good way to tie the colours in a piece of art with your home or office décor. Mats can be left plain or can be customized with lines and other effects. A professional framer can even take a piece of art that does not have any of the colours in your décor and create a framing design that blends in with most any style. Let your imagination soar – and let your professional framer help your ideas take wing. A qualified professional framer will play an important role in the preservation of your art through the use of proper protective materials. Care should be taken in selecting a professional framer who is knowledgeable in preservation framing methods, which will help protect valuable art. Quality, Comfort and Care: When Cancer meets Palliative Care The intersection of palliative care and cancer is significant. Perhaps more than any other disease, cancer conjures up huge emotions. Cancer is also a disease where patients have to make significant choices about how much treatment to pursue and for how long. Ideally, patients receiving the news that they have cancer will exercise their right to fully understand what their options are: to make choices about what intervention best suits them, and to be informed of the purpose of every procedure. Cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation may be used with the intent of cure; but, they may also be used to prolong life or ease the symptoms of the disease. Some people will elect to participate in every treatment available, while others may choose to forego treatment entirely. Each individual has the right to ask why they are receiving a specific intervention, what the side effects could be and what the likelihood of success is. Palliative care should be accessed early, often while treatment is still being pursued. Quality Palliative Care addresses the emotional, spiritual, physical, social and practical issues of the person and their family, emphasizing dignity, comfort, pain and symptom management and quality of life. In deciding whether to pursue treatment, it is important to ask oneself some key questions, such as: • What are my values? Quality of life? Quantity of life? • What am I afraid of? Pain? Being alone? Anxiety? • What are the chances of success?
• What are the side effects of treatment? Reflecting on these questions will help in forming both a treatment and a palliative care plan, reflecting early tends to help in living and dying well. Excellent palliative care involves a team approach including the patient, family, health care providers, spiritual supports and others the patient deems ‘part of the team’; when a plan driven by the patient is successfully enacted, dying well is on the way to becoming a reality. Perhaps Dr. Ira Byock, Author of ‘Dying Well’, says it best, “Dying is more than a set of problems to be solved. The nature of dying is not medical, it is experiential. Dying is fundamentally a personal experience, not a set of medical problems to be solved.” Prepared by the North Simcoe Muskoka Palliative Network. Find out more about Hospice Palliative care by visiting the North Simcoe Muskoka Palliative Care Network website at www.palliativecarenetworknsm. ca or by calling your local Hospice: Hospice Georgian Triangle 705.444.2555. Some girls sure know how to Flaunt It! That’s right! Those crazy ‘daredevil’ girls were back again at Blue Mountain for this year’s stop on the Billabong Flaunt It Tour and, as always they pushed the limits on their snowboards in both the slope and rail jam competitions. Showing no fear and a great deal of skill, these fierce competitors are always crowd pleasers and they wowed us once again! Congratulations to Samm Denena who took 1st and won $700 plus flight and accommodation for the Finals in Tahoe and to all the girls on a great outing and best of luck on the rest of the tour. 2013 Salomon Dontgetlost Snowshoe Raid Thankfully no one did get lost, at least not permanently! While there wasn’t enough snow for snowshoeing, this mountain adventure race went ahead with teams donning their trail shoes and competing over some pretty gruelling course conditions. Congratulations to Bob Miller, organizers, volunteers and participants on another great outdoor adventure! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

For those of you who know Ray Hacquard you will already be aware of these attributes, but for those who don’t, here are 7 things you should know about him. 1) Ray is an awesome guy! 2) Ray is a loving and devoted family man! 3) Ray is a wonderful friend to so many! 4) Ray is a great business owner and generous caring employer! 5) Ray has been battling cancer for many years! 6) Ray is a fighter, certainly no quitter and is determined to kick cancer’s butt! 7) If anyone deserves a great party, it’s Ray! And that’s exactly what Shannon Cox, oraganizers, sponsors and a packed house of family and friends did on Saturday January 19th at St. Patrick’s Hall in Stayner. I realize that it is still going to take a lot of money, research and support but I/we know that Cancer Can Be Beaten and I’m thinking with his determination and positive attitude Ray Hacquard may very well be the man to beat it single-handed! Always in our thoughts and prayers Ray, Tina and family :) Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

WINGS in Wasaga I recently attended a WINGS (Women In NetWeaving Growing Strong) meeting in Wasaga Beach. WINGS is an organization of referred women who have been recommended because of their honest and ethical business practices. It was a great group of women, discussing the new year and sharing their goals that keep them focused. The goal of their chapter meetings and other events manifest an inviting comfortable supportive “Pay it Forward” atmosphere where a positive interchange of encouragement and NetWeaving happens. Collingwood Order Recipients Awarded
Photos: Dave West Photography | Story: Melanie Vollick
January 13th, Deputy-Mayor Lloyd, members of Council and staff of the Town of Collingwood presented the Order of Collingwood and the Companion to the Order of Collingwood at the annual Mayor’s Levee at Georgian Manor Resort. Mayor, Sandra Cooper, kicked off the event by reflecting on 2012. “I’m looking forward to exciting times in 2013,” says Cooper. Cooper explained that it is difficult to select the recipients who are dedicated to improving the lives and experiences of those who live and visit our community. Two members previously recognized by the Order received the Companion to the Order of Collingwood, Mr. Bill Nicholson and Mr. R.S. “Bud” Christensen. Councillor’s Ian Chadwick and Joe Gardhouse presented the awards. Both volunteers endure to extend their devotion to their causes. This year’s recipients to the Order of Collingwood included Dr. Maury O’Neil, Jan Trude, Rob Graham and Shari Hawkins. These people have devoted their time and effort to help improve the lives of others. “I extend my deepest thanks to our recipients and the countless volunteers who work tirelessly to make the Town of Collingwood the vibrant and caring community that it is today. You make me proud to call Collingwood my home,” says Cooper. Without the commitment of dedicated volunteers, our community would not be as vibrant and alive as it is today. A huge thank-you goes out to all who take that extra step in helping to improve the lives of others. The Order of Collingwood recognizes individuals who have made outstanding volunteer contributions to improve social, cultural and recreational conditions in our town. You are all greatly appreciated! Councillor Kevin Lloyd presented the Order of Collingwood to Dr. Maury O’Neil. Dr. O’Neil’s volunteerism and background is very broad. He founded the Georgian Triangle Committee Against User Fees, organized youth Raptor clinics, and is the chairman and coach of the Georgian Trailblazers Basketball Club to name a few activities that he’s involved in.
Councillor Sandy Cunningham presented Mrs. Sharilyn “Sharie” Hawkins with the Order of Collingwood. Sharie has been volunteering with Hospice Georgian Triangle for over ten years. She is an active volunteer for the Blue Mountain Foundation of the Arts and has facilitated programs for a not-for-profit organization (Rainbow) which offers support for children between the ages of four and fourteen suffering with tragedies and difficult situations.
Deputy Mayor Rick Lloyd presented Mr. Robert Graham, president of the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 63), the Order of Collingwood. Robert’s been a member of the Legion since he was 19 years old and has been president for the past seven years. Under Mr. Graham’s leadership, the Branch has donated in excess of $600,000 to youth athletic programs which is a direct reflection of his continued work and commitment.
Councillor Mike Edwards presented the Order of Collingwood to Mrs. Jan Trude. Mrs. Trude was a recent recipient of the Diamond Jubilee Medal for her outstanding community achievements and contributions. She’s the chair and president of the General and Marine Hospital foundation, director at Large for the Rotary Club of Collingwood, and organizer and sponsor to the annual Tim Horton’s Golf Tournament.

(NC)—Buying your first home is one of life’s biggest milestones, but for many first time home buyers, getting together the money for a down payment is a huge challenge. “As a first time buyer, saving for a down payment is no mean feat,” says Ron Abraham, president of the Ontario Real Estate Association. “However, the benefits of home ownership make the struggle well worth it. Remember, the more you put down initially, the better; as this will cut into your long term mortgage costs.” Abraham recommends a combination of smart saving, careful budgeting and tapping into government incentives to help get your down payment together and into your first home faster. Most banks and lenders advise putting 20 per cent down – while this may not be possible for all first time buyers, Abraham suggests getting as close to that number as you can, and offers these tips to help: • Cut back: Remember, small things add up. A recent poll by Visa Canada found that 60 per cent of Canadians eat lunch out at least once a week. At an average cost of $8.80 per meal, eating out three times per week adds up to $20,000 after ten years! • Organize expenses: Make sure you keep track of your expenses so you can flag issues. Categorize spending so you can see where your money is going – it may motivate you to forego your daily latte. • Borrow from your RRSP: To provide first-time homebuyers with greater access to their RRSP savings to purchase or build a home, the Government of Canada has increased the Home Buyers’ Plan withdrawal limit to $25,000 per person for withdrawals made after January 27, 2009.

• Apply the First-Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit: To assist first-time homebuyers, the Government of Canada introduced a $5,000 non-refundable income tax credit on a qualifying home acquired after January 27, 2009. For eligible individuals, the credit provides up to $750 in federal tax relief starting in 2009. Profile on Business: Active Life Conditioning “Don’t look for the quick, big improvements. Seek the small improvements one day at a time, when it happens, it lasts” - DL 52 years old Rather than having one program and scaling it to all different levels, Active Life prides itself on offering an appropriate program for all demographics and fitness levels and an elite coach who is an expert in it to lead. “People often ask me what is the difference between Active Life and the other workout facilities in Collingwood. The difference is you are always working with a trainer. You are never left on your own during a session and no two workouts are the same” states Sarah Applegarth. As Active Life has grown, so has the staff and the amount of classes that are offered. “When Sarah mentioned that she was expanding, selfishly, I was worried that the personal attention would diminish. Was I ever wrong! Sarah has surrounded herself with the most incredible and caring staff and I look forward to my workouts instead of dreading them” - DL 52yrs (performance pedal, sport stretch –yoga). Our Conditioning classes are truly unique. With small group sizes, you and the same group are led through 8 weeks with the same coach who builds off the previous workout. ALC is grounded in science and ‘Educated Exercise’ so each client is given a personal injury assessment once they commit to a conditioning program. This has kept their injury rate very low for a high intensity workout and people get results. The very talented ‘recovery team’ of Lisa Rennie (movement expert and Pilates coach) and the very graceful and soothing yoga instructor Cathy Brown (formally Day) help considerably with this. One of the most popular group program is Performance Pedal led by the energetic cycling coach Steph Martinek. This 1 hour class on Schwinn AC Pro Bikes is coached using Heart rate and Cadence meters so you can really simulate road and mountain conditions and train for imbalances. “Active Life is the best gift that I’ve ever given myself. The coaches’ knowledge and expertise are second to none and they have created an environment that makes you want to be the best that you can be. I can honestly say I am in better shape now than I was in my twenties” KR 40 years old (push your pace) ALC also offers programming geared directly toward seniors with Older Adult Exercise Specialist Robin Holmgren, Physiotherapy with Laura Powers
(Voted Georgian Triangles best Physiotherapist in 2013), higher intensity conditioning programmes like Push your pace and CrossFit. But some of the more rewarding success stories have come from their weight loss and lifestyle programs. “I don’t under stand why everyone doesn’t go to Active Life Conditioning. I would recommend it to any person of any shape, age, size, fitness level, gender because none of that matters there. All that Sarah and her coaches care about is your personal best. Personal goals at ALC range on the spectrum from elite athletes competing for Canada in a variety of sports to someone like me: 40 yrs old, out of shape with over 100 lbs to lose. Commitment is a two way street there... if you commit to working hard, they commit to working hard with you. I can do things that I never even dreamt of before and not only have the team of coaches at ALC helped me lose almost 90 pounds but they modified all my workouts to help me get through an injury. ALC is such a special place because you are a member of their family and Sarah takes that very seriously. She has dedicated herself to assembling the right team of coaches with extraordinary credentials, immense knowledge and a shared set of values that speak to living a balanced, healthy, active lifestyle that feeds the body, the mind and the spirit. I have never felt so physically and mentally healthy... and it is because of Active Life and all that they have done for me.” - LY 40yrs (Nooners, Performance Pedal)

Private training and semi private training is available for those whose schedules don’t fit with the group programs or have more individual goals to plan for. Youth Conditioning programs round out the offerings. Summer Camps for ages 7-14 as well as year round physical literacy programs to assist children in many sports are helping to feed athletes to the very successful Performance training (15-20years). This program has graduated many athletes injury free to National and Provincial teams and Universities in various spots. Sarah has been chosen by many elite athletes because of her diverse programing and attention to detail. “What sets training apart with Sarah is how she addresses my specific needs and goals. She’s helped me become a stronger and faster athlete. With her help I am achieving my goals and competing at my best.” Vicki Bendus -Canadian Women’s Hockey Team

Last supper for the Golden Apple It sure was a busy night at the Golden Apple on January 30th for their closing party. The Golden Apple Restaurant in Stayner will be remembered by many. It was almost 30 years ago that owner Leslie Kinnear and her recently deceased husband took over the business. Leslie and cook, Bill Peeling, served up an amazing array of delectable food, beverages and desserts. There were two chocolate fountains and the house was packed. Thank-you Leslie for all your memorable years and I have to mention, a huge thanks to your homemade caesar salad dressing, as it was my favourite, for as long as I can remember, and good luck on your new venture and path; see you out in the community. Oh, and Golden Apple coffee club members are welcome to join a new coffee club at The Stayner Coffee Shop across from the public school. Cheers! “I have enjoyed listening to the stories as some of them I had forgotten about. The customers have been really awesome and there have been a lot of tears and hugs,” says Leslie. The membership believes strongly that this new technology will allow physicians to quickly and accurately diagnose patients is a top priority for every family and an important project for their club. “The Optimist Club strives to help every child reach their full potential through a variety of initiatives in our community. The health and wellbeing of our youth is fundamental and it is comforting to know that the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital is focused on bringing the necessary equipment to care for our community,” says Optimist Club President, Curtis Morin.

OUR GREATEST POSSESSION The core of sustainability is in our children; however, the responsibility does not lie in their hands alone. Adults and community play key roles in their success. Now, more than ever, our community culture needs to be supportive of children and youth. If we can develop opportunities where we work, volunteer, or even in our own neighbourhoods to invite young people to participate, as well as encourage other adults to welcome them into their space, to provide them with activities and affection, this will help them prosper in health and spirit.

By establishing social links, and providing programs and services, we bridge the gaps between schools, families, and communities. When providing youth with resources that promote youth success, this will establish a sense of belonging and empower them to seek a positive vision for their future. We need to believe in our youth and encourage them. While providing opportunities for input and incorporating them in the process of decision making, we can help them reach their individual potential. Kudos to all of the local organizations who are threading their way in the community and into the schools. Schools working with communities offer hope. Programs that support “being healthy”, that teach about nutrition, physical activity and the importance of self, help youth to realize that they are valuable. A place to belong provides a secure environment to foster relationships and creativity. The Philosopher , Rudolph Steiner wrote, “A healthy social life is found only, when in the mirror of each soul the whole community finds its reflection, and when in the whole community the virtue of each one is living.” Consider how our interactions with the children and youth of today will impact future generations. These actions can be a positive process by creating a conscious commitment to our children and youth. Their well-being is a fundamental step in the achievement of a healthy, sustainable future.

Ice Sculptures Fit For A Queen ... I’m certain that Her Majesty would have been just as impressed as the thousands of locals and visitors who enjoyed this simply marvellous display over the holiday season. The Downtown Collingwood BIA with the support of numerous wonderful sponsors hosted their 2nd Annual Ice Sculpture Festival and in keeping with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration the festival was British themed. The streets quite literally came alive with these colourful, shimmering ice sculptures. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

A Mid-Life Crisis can be a good thing ... and Jim Harrison’s band proved that as they took home the honours as crowd favourite at the 2nd Annual Rotary Club of Collingwood’s Battle of the Bands adult competition. The event, held over two nights, at the Royal Canadian Legion, featured great music from youth bands the first night followed up by a stellar lineup of adult bands on Friday evening. Both outings the music was amazing and the competition fierce and while someone had to go home victorious, the real winner was the community as the net proceeds which apparently exceeded $10,000 were destined for local charities. A fantastic couple of evenings of musical entertainment and congratulations and kudos to all who organized, participated and supported this great event! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography
Small gestures add up to big romance (NC)—Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and men everywhere are breaking into a cold sweat. They’ve bought into the fallacy that romance equals money. But when we think of the most romantic and breathtaking stories of romance, they almost never involve flying off to Europe or drinking the most expensive champagne. It’s usually small gestures like holding hands, kissing in the rain, or simply stargazing that we remember. Opportunities for romance exist just about anywhere, and this Valentine’s Day, you can spoil your loved one without spending a fortune, like this: 1. Be savvy, not cheap. Buy flowers that are in season or shop around for deals and avoid delivery charges by buying locally. 2. Write your loved one a romantic letter and place it under their pillow. Or, write multiple love notes and post them throughout the house. Write something romantic on the bathroom mirror too. 3. Make “love coupons”. These are really up to your imagination. You can include coupons for a passionate kiss, a favourite meal, breakfast out, or a massage. 4. Take a walk down memory lane and visit some of the special places from your early days of dating. 5. Recreate your partner’s favourite romantic movie scene. Georgian Life • February 2013
6. Pretend you’re going on a first date. Show up at the door with flowers, dressed up, with your car washed and cleaned. Relive the first time. 7. Cook a romantic dinner together or enjoy take-out by the candlelight. 8. Prepare strawberries with fondue chocolate. 9. Hold hands and walk to a scenic area that has lots of pretty lights. 10. Make the world a better place together. Purchase a small gift like a bag of rice for just $10 through a non-profit organization like Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (www.ccfcanada.ca) and help fight poverty around the world. 11. Create a visual scrapbook of your everyday life together. 12. If you are feeling really creative, write a short story and make sure you and your partner are the lead characters destined to find love. Each year together, you can add a new chapter to the story. www.newscanada.com
Remembering Roy Wilson On Sunday, January 20th Wasaga Beach Town Crier, Roy Wilson, died in front of his television from a massive heart attack just a week after opening at the New Year’s Levee on Jan. 13th. Wilson was Wasaga Beach’s first town crier and held the position since winning a competition for the post in 1998. In his professional career, Wilson worked as a police officer in Toronto from 1948 to 1975. And, after policing, Roy worked in security for the Toronto Blue Jays. Wilson was known for ringing his bell and shouting “Oh Yeas” at numerous events in and around the area in his distinctive red and white uniform. You would often see his wife of 62 years, Catherine (or better known as ‘Kay’) at his side. The couple was inducted to the Order of Wasaga Beach in 2008 and Roy won Rotary International’s Paul Harris Fellowship in 2010. Roy and Kay have three children, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Many attended Roy’s Celebration of Life which took place at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25th at the RecPlex in Wasaga Beach. Roy will be remembered by family and friends for his outstanding commitment as ambassador for Wasaga Beach. He was a dedicated volunteer who encouraged everyone he knew to get involved with the community. It was just two years ago that the Wilson’s travelled to the Dominican Republic as part of Rotary Club trip bringing relief and supplies to Haitian refugees. Roy Wilson was 86 years old and known to be quite active. He will sadly be missed by many! Story: Melanie Vollick, Write Way Communications

Get Your Haggis Piping Hot... In celebration of Robbie Burns Day and in keeping with tradition the Beaver & Bulldog had the haggis paraded proudly around the establishment complete with pipe and drum. The ceremony would not be complete without the reading of Burn’s ‘Address to a Haggis’ which preceded the official ‘stabbing of the beast’ and a toast with Scotch whiskey. All then enjoyed sampling this fine Scottish dish! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography
