“Food insecurity was already an urgent problem before COVID-19, with one in eight Canadians struggling to put food on the table. We are grateful to the Government of Canada for their quick response, as well as the many corporate partners and generous donors who have stepped forward,” says Nick Saul, CEO of Community Food Centres Canada. “The Good Food Access Fund aims to make sure that as many people as possible will be able to get the food that they need. At the same time, CFCC remains committed to advancing policy change that addresses the underlying causes of food insecurity and poverty in Canada. We can’t forget that structural inequity is at the core of so many of the challenges Canadians face, which has been magnified during COVID.” For more information please visit: ww.southgeorgianbaychc.ca

Collingwood has a new Youth Cycling Team On April 8th, a celebration was held at Chalk’s Training to launch Collingwood Collective Racing, a new competitive cycling team for youth that fills a void in the region. Bruce Zigman, the owner of Summit Social House (think pre-ride coffee, post-ride snack-and-beer), spearheaded the creation of Collingwood Collective. Having grown up racing bikes, Zigman was surprised to find that element lacking in the Collingwood area. “Collingwood has a massive bike scene,” he says. “So, I was surprised not to find the same thing as you find here with hockey and skiing: strong youth development and a healthy racing environment.” Zigman banded together with ten other business owners to make Collingwood Collective happen. Together, the sponsors will provide cycling kits, race fees and coaching, and training rides and mentorship, with the bulk of the funding going toward youth members. The sponsors are Summit Social House, propeller coffee co, Powerwatts, Pedal Pushers, Maximum Physiotherapy, F45 Blue Mountain, Engel & Völkers, Edward Jones, Collingwood Youth Centre, Chalk’s Training and Barista Coffee Roasters. All of the available spots on the team this year are filled with aspiring young racers, but they hope to add more next season. PHOTOS: BRYAN DAVIES PHOTOGRAPHY | STORY: CARL MICHENER ¡Outwrite! CELEBRATING 7 YEARS IN BUSINESS!

Ted Yoannou: In Your Corner The Will Smith and Chris Rock In All Of Us We're damaged people Drawn together By subtleties that we are not aware of Disturbed souls Playing out forever These games that we once thought we would be scared of

HELPFUL SPRING TIPS FOR RURAL PROPERTIES

-Depeche Mode

Spring is a good time to inspect and service rural property systems; we recommend:

We're all damaged people: family and friends, neighbours and co-workers, lovers and strangers. The damage is literally everywhere. We start off with our inherited imperfections at birth, and then life's experiences begin to pile on. The things we don't fully understand and can't properly articulate that make us angry, afraid, nervous, mean, irrational. In all my years as a criminal defence lawyer, I could have benefitted from having an expert psychologist by my side to better understand our clients and their actions. What happened to you? How did you get to this point? And of course, tell us about your mother. For the most part, we don't have the ability to ask and answer these questions of ourselves, or if we do, we often just can't bear to get into it. Maybe I've just been reading too much Stephen King lately. His collection of stories in "Different Seasons" includes two made into movie classics, The Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me. "Disturbed souls" are to be found everywhere in these novellas; no one is unscathed. In truth, "damaged" isn't the right word to describe us. If we're all damaged in one way or another, then isn't it really just part of being human? My father used to love the line, "I'm sorry, I'm only human," as if it were a free pass for all transgressions. He should have been a defence lawyer, or better yet, a forgiving God.

1. Pumping and inspection of the septic system, checking baffles and interior condition of tanks and the septic bed. Consider using enzymes to help break down solids. 2. Testing well water and inspection of water supply system, flow rate and recovery rate of well water, adding filters and UV protection is recommended.

3. Inspecting electrical systems in the home and outbuildings, especially where livestock are housed. Faulty electrical can cause barn fires and loss of animal life. Have generator inspected and tested. 4. Check propane and oil tank levels and exterior condition of tanks and cylinders. Tank requalification is required every 10 years.

Which brings us to the Oscars. How does an experienced and trained actor like Will Smith, knowing that the cameras are rolling, millions are watching and anticipating the most significant award of his career, lose it like that? My first thought was that our Maple Leafs could use someone like him in the playoffs, righting any wrongs against our superstar players with that iconic Canadian action, the hockey glove face wash. My next thoughts were, What happened to Will Smith? How did he get to that point? And, how about the lesser discussed Chris Rock aspect of the story? In the past, Rock has said he was badly and repeatedly bullied and assaulted as a child. One day, he finally retaliated by putting a brick in a book bag, brutally avenging one of his tormentors, almost killing him. Rock says he has had a long-time therapist helping him through this childhood trauma. The counsellor tells him, "You have been scared to be angry ever since. This guy brought something out in you, and you're so scared of that thing coming out of you again that you let the whole world walk all over you." When Smith walked up to Rock at the Oscars, Rock smiled and leaned his face out toward Smith. And, Smith smacked him hard. The whole world walked all over him again. Rock barely reacted, and the show went on. He hasn't said much about it since, except that he is "still processing" what happened. Will Smith and Chris Rock. All of us. Damaged people and disturbed souls drawn together, playing out these games forever.

June 4th is National Bowls Day - it's like curling on the grass Come out to the Stayner Lawn Bowling Club from 11 am – 2 pm and “Give it a try”! There are many stereotypes about lawn bowling. The truth is bowling gets you out in the fresh air; it is excellent exercise and a social game, which is why so many older people play. It is like their best-kept secret for good health from a mental and physical perspective. The game is easy to learn, but it takes time to master and learn strategy, making it a game that you can enjoy for years. But, any age can play, so multiple generations can play together competitively on an equal footing.

It is not expensive, $150 for adults for the season, including lessons, less for youth. There is no special equipment to play – all you need is flat-soled shoes, comfortable clothing and we suggest a hat to keep the sun out of your eyes. We supply the bowls and equipment you need. What is unique about lawn bowling is the bowls are shaped so that they curl as they roll down the green, and the target – the jack or white ball – can move during play. You score the same way as curling, but there is no sweeping. A game – generally eight ends – takes about an hour to play with socializing. There are tools to assist players who may not have full mobility that help to pick up or deliver bowls. Our club plays four days a week – Monday & Wednesday mornings, Tuesday & Thursday evenings. Teams are set up - singles, doubles, triples or fours after everyone arrives, so you come when it works for your schedule.

CELEBRATE OUR COMMUNITY SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS

If you are competitive, there are tournaments with other clubs and provincial and national tournaments. Something for everyone - it all starts with a first try. Come out and find out what it is all about. After all, you do not know what it is like until you give it a try.

The Iron Skillet has been a landmark in Collingwood since 1991, when Tony and Doris Sensenberger first opened the restaurant. Tony started his career in Collingwood in 1978. He inherited his passion for cooking from his aunt, a restaurateur, and he decided to follow in her footsteps. After working at some local restaurants, he apprenticed with Jean Pierre Zingg at JP's Swiss restaurant. Once he mastered the art of cooking JP style, JP, recognizing his talent, told him to hone his skills in the city (Toronto). Tony went to work at the Four Seasons, learning the cooking techniques of fine dining and then onto Vancouver as part of the Four Season's Expo Team.

homemade meals using choice ingredients, his passion for food, his love of creating a welcoming experience and his desire to provide a varied culinary experience with reasonable prices and healthy portions.

After a cultural experience in Austria, wanting to explore his roots, he came back to Collingwood with a vision of creating a hometown restaurant with a worldly twist using fresh ingredients and love. He wanted to give his customers a chance to savour the tastes of unique dishes and old-fashioned favourites at hometown prices. His passion is creating new experiences from places he visits and serving the community. Anyone who knows Tony knows when he travels, he ends up in kitchens around the world (even if they don't want him there), learning new dishes to bring home to offer to his customers. His food has won awards, and his amazing stuffed Yorkshire Pudding and Spanish Seafood Paella (Doris' favourite) were featured on the Food Network's television show 'YOU GOTTA EAT HERE.'

"The Iron Skillet has always been one of if not the best place to eat in Collingwood!! All the old favourites and some stunningly good new creations as well. Always something new and enticing on the special board." - Ken

The Iron Skillet is offering franchises in the communities of Kitchener, Guelph, Owen Sound and Midland for young chefs/entrepreneurs to get into a successful business model with support from 30 years of learning.

"Love how they have a variety of lunch and dinner specials daily! Such a vast menu with so much to choose from, I could hardly decide!! Oh, and great cocktails too!" - Sonja

The Iron Skillet has something for everyone: Cajun jambalaya, pad thai, enchiladas, Moroccan lamb, Spanish paella, fresh-cut AAA steaks, in-house smoked ribs and brisket, and several varieties of Austrian schnitzel (as big as your head) and gulasch. Of course, you can always order an old favourite (and generously portioned) meal like a homemade burger, clubhouse, chicken fingers and more. An extensive kids' menu will satisfy even the pickiest of eaters. The wine menu is extensive; there is a variety of draft beer, scotch, whiskey, vodka and tequila, and customers say they have the coldest beer in town. In addition, the licensed patios will be open for the summer in both Collingwood and Wasaga Beach locations. So, what is Tony's secret to creating a destination? His commitment to customer satisfaction, traditional

Spring Cedar Planked Asparagus It’s Spring which means it’s time to fire up the barbecue after a long and wintery hiatus. There really is no better time than May to throw some locally grown asparagus on the grill. Traditionally used for salmon, cedar planks are also perfect for asparagus. No barbecue? No problem! Cedar planks work well in the oven if soaked for 2 hours prior to cooking. Pre-soaking the planks is crucial for safety’s sake and to release steam for a rich, smoky flavour whether cooking indoors or out. Use caution with plank cooking and have a spray bottle filled with water on hand to deal with potential flare-ups.

Cancer Chat Forty years have passed since discovering that mutated RAS genes are integral drivers of human cancer. RAS proteins are central and critical regulators of cellular proliferation and the most frequently mutated gene family in cancer. In 1982, the discovery that mutated RAS drives tumour growth seemed like a golden opportunity for therapeutic intervention. But, unfortunately, over 30-years of failed efforts have resulted in RAS being classified as undruggable. During the 1960s, RAS proteins were identified from Harvey and Kirsten rat sarcoma viruses. Subsequently, human homologs were identified and found to be encoded by three genes called Harvey Ras virus (H-Ras), Kirsten Ras virus (K-Ras) and neural Ras (N-Ras). RAS family members belong to a class of proteins called small GTPase and are involved in transmitting signals within cells. In normal cells, RAS is activated by incoming signals in a controlled fashion. Mutation permits RAS to accumulate in a persistently activated state resulting in overactive signaling inside the cell, even in the absence of incoming signals. Advances in research have established that RAS mutation drives cellular transformation in numerous cancer types, including colorectal, pancreatic, lung, and melanoma. The mutations observed in RAS involve a single nucleotide base change in the gene that results in a single amino acid change in the protein. RAS mutations typically affect codons G12, G13 or Q61, ultimately trapping RAS in a constitutively active form, thus converting RAS into a deadly oncogene. The G12 codon is a mutational hotspot in K-RAS, and a specific mutation called G12C is the third most common mutation at this position. G12C mutations are common in nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and are associated with smoking. “Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. It accounts for more deaths worldwide than colon cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer combined,” says Shem Singh, Executive Director, Lung Cancer Canada. NSCLC is the most common type of lung cancer, accounting for 84% of the 2.2 million new lung cancer diagnoses each year worldwide. K-RAS G12C is the most prevalent driver mutation in NSCLC; approximately 15% of NSCLC patients have the K-RAS G12C mutation, which at the cellular level causes abnormal cells in the lungs to reproduce out of control rapidly. In 2013, the National Cancer Institute established the RAS initiative to explore innovative approaches for inhibiting mutant forms of RAS to create new therapies for RAS-driven cancers. The same year, a landmark study was

published describing molecules that bind to K-Ras G12C and lock that form of mutant RAS into an inactive state. The research provided validation of a new regulatory site on RAS that was targetable in a mutant-specific manner. Subsequent research triggered a stampede of G12C inhibitors, all binding in the same pocket and with similar chemistries. In 2019, breakthrough research by pharmaceutical giant Amgen identified a previously unexploited surface groove in K-Ras G12C, permitting the discovery of a new inhibitor with enhanced potency and selectivity. The resultant AMG 510, also known as sotorasib, emerged as the top candidate from the optimization campaign. In phase 1 clinical trials, sotorasib demonstrated anti-tumour activity in the first dosing cohorts and represented a potentially transformative therapy in humans, promising evidence of clinical efficacy. In the phase 2 clinical trial, sotorasib led to a rapid and durable benefit in patients with K-RAS G12C mutated NSCLC. The trial investigated efficacy and tolerability in 126 patients with K-RAS G12C mutation in advanced NSCLC who had disease progression after receiving standard treatments. Commonly observed (≥ 20%) adverse reactions were diarrhea, musculoskeletal pain, nausea, fatigue, hepatotoxicity, and cough. Based on positive efficacy and tolerability observed in the phase 2 trial, in September 2021, Health Canada approved sotorasib to treat adult patients with mutant K-RAS G12C advanced or metastatic NSCLC. Currently, a phase 3 trial to compare sotorasib therapy with docetaxel therapy in patients with previously treated, locally advanced, unresectable, or metastatic NSCLC with a K-RAS G12C mutation is underway. Unfortunately, the K-Ras G12C inhibitors rely on an inactive state of the protein that other RAS mutants do not exhibit. Consequently, mutant alleles of K-RAS involving the more common G12D and G12V mutations found in other cancers remain undruggable. Future research will address knowledge gaps, including understanding how RAS proteins interact with each other, how they activate their effectors, and which effectors are most important. Shedding light on these areas will help advance strategies for targeting all RAS-driven cancers. Submitted by: Dr. Oliver Kent, Cancer researcher and Senior Scientist at adMare BioInnovations. THESE LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN HELP YOU WITH YOUR NEEDS INSIDE & OUT!

Signs of electrical problems in a home Homeowners know that all sorts of issues can affect a home. Issues can run the gamut from merely annoying to unsafe. Electrical issues fall into the latter category, posing a significant safety hazard if left unchecked. Learning to recognize warning signs of electrical wiring issues can significantly lower the risk of house fires. House fires pose a significant threat, and the majority of those house fires can be prevented. Therefore, learning to recognize signs of electrical problems in a home is a critical component of home fire prevention. Dimming or flickering lights Light fixtures do not typically draw a substantial amount of power, so dimming or flickering lights do not often indicate an issue with a fixture. However, dimming or flickering lights could indicate that the circuit the lights are on is overburdened, most likely by large appliances sharing the circuit with the lights. If dimming and flickering lights are a problem, homeowners can speak to an electrician about moving the fixtures to another circuit or installing a new line specifically for major appliances. Odours Odour emanating from an outlet, fuse box or breaker panel should be reported to an electrician immediately. The odour, which some homeowners indicate smells like fish, could be a result of an overheated circuit. Odour coming from an outlet, fuse box or breaker panel could indicate a significant electrical issue, so homeowners should not hesitate to report this problem to an electrician. Odours can sometimes travel through HVAC systems as well, so homeowners should take note and call an electrician even if their outlets do not smell. Hot outlets/switch plates Outlets and/or switch plates that are hot to the touch are another indicator of an electrical issue. Outlets that become hot even when nothing is plugged into them could be wired incorrectly. In such instances, an electrician will

need to fix the issue, and in the meantime, it may be best for homeowners to flip the breaker or remove the fuse for the outlet. Frequently blown fuses or tripped breakers Circuit breakers and fuses have a built-in fail-safe that is designed to prevent overloading. Sometimes a tripped breaker is a result of an aging appliance. One way to detect that is to plug in the product to more than one outlet in the house. If each breaker trips, then the appliance is likely to blame. However, if using the same outlet continues to trip the breaker regardless of what's plugged into it, the circuit requires an electrician's attention. Electrical issues increase the risk of home fires. Fortunately, such issues are generally preventable and often easily remedied by a qualified electrician.

How everyone can pitch in to protect water supplies Water is easily taken for granted, especially in areas of the world where access to clean water is as simple as turning on a faucet. However, the World Health Organization reports that nearly 800 million people across the globe lack a basic water-drinking service. Access is not the only way water can be taken for granted. Clean water also is a given in many parts of the world, even though keeping water clean requires constant effort. Individuals can do their part to maintain safe local water supplies by heeding these tips. Choose water-friendly cleaning products. Consumers’ choice of cleaning products affects water supplies. Some household cleaners contain hazardous or toxic substances that can contaminate ground or surface waters. Common sense suggests all-natural cleaning products would not contain toxic substances, but packaging can be misleading. For example, various products are purported to be “ecofriendly” or “green,” but that doesn’t mean they are. “Greenwashing” is a practice employed by manufacturers that are designed to give consumers the impression a product is non-toxic and eco-friendly, even though that’s not necessarily the case.

Avoid flushing expired medications down the toilet. Few people give a second thought to flushing unused medications down the toilet. However, various organizations urge individuals to contact their local governments about drug take-back events. One of the risks associated with flushing old medicines down the toilet is that they can ultimately end up in streams and rivers when disposed of in this fashion. That contaminates local water supplies and poses a threat to local wildlife. Pick up after pets (and local wildlife, if necessary). No one wants a yard full of pet waste, but the threat of animal feces is more serious than some people may realize. Pet feces and excrement from local wildlife should be picked up immediately or, in the case of wild animals, the moment homeowners notice it. That’s because pet waste is a contaminant that can carry bacteria into storm drains and adversely affect local water supplies. Plant native species. Water scarcity may not affect developed nations on a daily basis, but it’s not as foreign an issue as people may think. For example, during periods of drought, which have increased significantly in many areas over the last 20 years, water restrictions can affect the health of plants around a property. Native species are adapted to withstand local weather, including periods of drought if that’s common to a given area. That means they won’t need as much water when conditions become dry. Though it’s easy to take water for granted, it’s even easier to take steps to protect and conserve local water supplies.

Gardening is a rewarding hobby linked to health benefits like reduced stress and improved mental well-being. Gardening also can lead to an inviting home landscape full of attractive blooms and/or delicious foods. Backyard gardens have long been planted after clearing a plot of land, tilling and amending the soil, and planting rows of favourite crops. However, gardening can be less labour-intensive and even more successful when people consider the many benefits of container gardening. What is container gardening? As its name implies, container gardening is growing plants inside containers. These containers can be flower pots, rectangular deck boxes or even large raised garden beds.

Pros to container gardening One of the advantages of container gardening is that plants can be moved in and out of sunlight to ensure the right growing conditions. This isn’t as easily achieved when gardens are stationary. Also, beginner gardeners may be more able to control soil conditions inside a small container rather than a vast ground-based garden, requiring a good deal of manual labour. Pots and boxes can also be grouped together to create eye-popping displays, usually at lower costs than the sheer volume of plants needed to fill out an expansive landscape. Cons to container gardening Container garden plants will not have direct access to the ground, so they need gardeners to create the ideal growing conditions. Developing the proper care formula can be challenging. Drainage is essential in container gardening, and most containers do not offer enough drainage holes. If water cannot escape the soil, the roots of the plants can rot and die. It’s not enough to add stones or gravel to the bottom of containers. Drill additional holes in the bottom (1⁄2-inch in diameter for small or medium-sized pots; one inch in diameter for larger pots). Also, check on soil moisture so that watering can be adjusted. During hot stretches, plants may need to be watered more frequently. Plan for plants that play well Grouping plants together can create visually stunning combinations. However, it is important to choose plants that require the same amount of light and moisture. When visiting the garden centre, look at plant tags and select complementary plants, or ask a store employee. Mixing different plant shapes, colours and leaf textures, and plants of various heights can help containers look filled out. Feed plants accordingly Plants need nutrition to thrive in containers. Quality potting mixes will contain fertilizers, but nutrition will wane over time. Every couple of weeks, container plants will need either fresh potting mix or granular fertilizer added to feed them. It is also suggested to use a slowrelease fertilizer or worm castings several times throughout the season. Container gardening is a great way to add plants to smaller patios, reduce the workload involved in maintaining expansive gardens, and customize conditions for optimal growth.

BUSINESS PROFILE:

Love your kitchen again EcoRefinishers has been a family-owned and operated business for over 16 years specializing in professionally refinished cabinetry. Using a waterbased lacquer, coupled with trained skills, they can bring your kitchen back to life with a lasting and attractive finish. In addition, their professional spray system and products give long-lasting, gorgeous quality to your kitchen cabinets while ensuring an eco-friendly environment for you and your family. Their process is simple. In one day, the crew will diligently mask your kitchen to protect against overspray; then they will sand, prime and spray everything that cannot be removed, such as the outer boxes and crown. Next, the doors and drawer faces are labelled, catalogued, removed and transported to the finishing facility. Once the doors have been thoroughly cleaned, sanded and painted, they undergo a 2-3 day curing process to ensure complete adhesion of product for future durability. Finally, when the doors are ready, the service team transports them back to your home to complete the installation. And voilà - it is complete, and you have a glorious “new” kitchen to enjoy!

We treat you as one of our own. Integrity, honesty, and hard work are all ideals we take to heart. We show up on time, finish when we say we will, and leave your home as clean as it was before we started. To the best of our ability, we strive to complete all our clients’ kitchens in just ten business days. This way, you are never without your kitchen doors for very long – and once the crew is done on the first day, you can go back to using your kitchen as you were before. Testimonies from previous clients can be verified through HomeStars – where we have won their “Best Of” award for three consecutive years!

EcoRefinishers offers a three-year warranty on kitchen refinishing, and they are always happy to help with colour or hardware choices and any other advice. Unfortunately, once in a while, there are kitchens that just cannot be refinished – and they will let you know that. If you are planning any other renovations, such as replacing your countertops, backsplash or sink, it is recommended that you complete these first. Wall painting and other aesthetic touches should be completed after the cabinets have been refinished. Refinish your kitchen cabinets with EcoRefinishers, and they will do their best to give you the kitchen you’ve been waiting for while minimizing waste, hassle and expenditure for you. Love your kitchen again!

Factors to consider before converting an attic

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many homeowners suddenly needed more usable square footage in their homes. Required to work from home due to social distancing recommendations, millions of working professionals suddenly found themselves setting up shop at kitchen tables or islands, in alcoves, garages, or even walk-in closets. Those makeshift offices were never supposed to be permanent, but as companies loosen workplace policies and embrace full remote or hybrid working arrangements, professionals are seeking more permanent home office solutions. Home additions are a possibility for homeowners who need more usable square footage, but add-ons may not be the right option for everyone. If adding on won’t work, homeowners may want to look up ... at their attics. Attics with ample space can make for ideal home offices, as they’re away from the hustle and bustle of a home’s main floor. That can make it easier to concentrate when everyone is in the house and reduce the likelihood that kids and pets will interrupt video calls with colleagues and clients. Attic conversions are not always possible, and the following are three important factors homeowners may need to consider before going forward with such projects. Dimensions Both the renovation experts at This Old House and the real estate experts at UpNest indicate that at least half of a finished attic must be a minimum of seven feet high and seven feet wide, and 70 square feet. Requirements may differ depending on where homeowners live, but that 7-7-70 guideline is generally the minimum requirement. An attic that fails to meet such requirements won’t necessarily be a lost cause, but it might be costly to make adjustments that ultimately align with local codes.

Access Access is another aspect that must adhere to local safety guidelines. Many attics are accessible only through pulldown ladders, but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose their attic spaces. A staircase that complies with local laws will need to be installed, and contractors can work with homeowners to build that and estimate the cost. Homeowners who simply want to put desks in their attics without going with full-fledged conversions are urged to adhere to local access requirements anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents can safely escape attics in the case of a fire or another emergency. Climate control Attics are converted to provide residents with more livable space. The converted space is only livable if the climate within the attic can be controlled, so it’s cool in the summer and warm in the winter. An existing HVAC unit needs to efficiently heat and cool an extra room. If it can’t, bills might spike because the rest of the home likely won’t be as comfortable, forcing homeowners to adjust thermostats to offset that discomfort. That also could affect the unit’s life expectancy. Before going forward with an attic renovation, homeowners should contact HVAC professionals to determine if attic spaces can be serviced with the existing units and ductwork or if an alternative arrangement must be worked out to make the spaces livable. Attic conversions can be great ways to make existing spaces more livable. Homeowners considering such projects should pay attention to three important variables as they try to determine if attic conversions will work for them.

Tricks to keep floral arrangements fresh Who doesn’t enjoy receiving a fresh bouquet on a special occasion? Flowers traditionally are given for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, anniversaries, and other special events. However, while a beautiful bouquet can make a lovely gift, fresh flowers have finite lasting power. Recipients of floral arrangements need not fret. Various strategies can help prolong the life of freshly cut flowers. Florists employ certain tricks to keep cut flowers fresh longer. In fact, that’s a person’s best bet to keep cut flowers fresh - purchasing arrangements from knowledgeable florists who have done their part to ensure flower longevity. Here are some additional strategies to consider. Make fresh cuts in stems Think back to the last time you purchased a fresh Christmas tree. What is the key to ensuring it gets enough water while on display? You guessed it: making a fresh cut in the trunk of the tree. The same concept applies to floral arrangements. Use a sharp scissor or pruning shears to cut about one inch from the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. Continue this process every three days or so. The 45-degree angle prevents the stem from squishing during the cut and enables it to absorb more water. Get them in water quickly Place the flowers in a vase or other vessel with water promptly after making the cuts. Some florists like to cut the stems underwater to prevent air bubbles from forming in the stems. Choose an arrangement first, then cut and quickly place the flowers in water. This gives fresh arrangements a good chance to last a while.

flowers | foliage | trees annual | perennial | edible soil | mulch | compost hard goods | tools pots | planters | hangers bird feeders | bird houses bird seed | grass seed seasonal bulbs fertilizers | chemicals tropicals | succulents decor | design | lifestyle

Featuring

Monitor water temperature The water temperature in the vase should coordinate with the flowers on display. Do not use hot water, or the stems will cook. Room temperature is best for most flowers, except for blooms from bulbs that flower during cooler months, such as tulips and daffodils; they’ll be more likely to thrive in cooler water. Chill your arrangement The experts at FTD by Design tested various theories for keeping floral arrangements fresh, including adding aspirin to the water or using sugar or concoctions that contain vodka. Sugar and vinegar served as a runner-up for long-lasting blooms, but the best solution for prolonging the flowers was putting the arrangement in the refrigerator each night for roughly eight hours. Prune the foliage Before placing cut flowers in a vase, remove extra leaves at the base of the stems that will fall underneath the waterline. This helps to limit bacteria growth in the water and cuts back on foul odours. Plus, removing foliage focuses flowers’ energy on the main blooms rather than the leaves.

Different ways to repair a driveway

HOME & PROPERTY

Asphalt driveways do not last forever. Over time, weather and general usage can degrade the driveway surface, resulting in cracks and pitting. Ultraviolet rays, salt and automotive fluids also can affect the appearance and functionality of a driveway. An unsightly driveway can adversely affect curb appeal and resale potential.

Local, Experienced and Reliable

Homeowners have to consider various factors when it comes to repairing driveways. They may have the option of getting the driveway resurfaced, resealed or repaved, and each project is unique.

If you’re considering groundskeeping services for this year, please give us a call for a free quote. Let us maintain your lawn so you can spend more time enjoying free time!

Resurfacing: Resurfacing is simpler and faster than installing a new asphalt driveway. With resurfacing, any cracks are filled in to create an even base. Then a new layer of asphalt is applied over the existing one. That new layer can range in thickness from 1.5 to 3 inches. A heavy rolling machine will then smooth and flatten the layers together. If the driveway has minor pitting or cracking, resurfacing can be a cost-effective strategy. Resealing: Resealing a driveway, also called seal coating, is another repair strategy. Resealing helps the driveway last longer. Resealing can be a do-ityourself project. First, the driveway needs to be clean and dry, with holes and cracks filled before seal coating. Next, start at the far edge of the driveway and seal that area by “cutting in” by hand for a neat edge. Afterward, the rest of the driveway can be sealed using a squeegee or broom. This project can be completed within two or three days if no precipitation is forecast. Repaving: A project best left to professionals, repaving typically involves the removal of an existing driveway and the installation of a new one. The sub-grade layer is essential in the process for a smooth look. Contractors also will assess soil and grading when doing work. Depending on budget and need, the new asphalt driveway can vary in thickness between two and six inches. The contractor also can advise if a full-depth asphalt application or an aggregate base is practical.

Residential, Commercial, Industrial

Assessing the driveway condition can give homeowners a better idea about which type of repair project best suits their property.

BAKER'S BENCH TRULY MADE FRESH The Baker's Bench is built on a vision of bringing customers, neighbours and friends the best fresh baking possible, without compromise. Just ask their many satisfied customers, or better yet, read the glowing comments on Facebook and Instagram. Regulars at The Baker's Bench know to buy their favourites early because when they're gone, they're gone until the owner and baker, Amanda, bakes them again. That's truly made fresh. The Baker's Bench takes its name from the heavy-duty worktable indispensable to bakers everywhere. These benches or tables withstand the weight of regular rolling, mixing, kneading and other food prep. The tabletop is typically made with a heavy maple top that provides the insulation and warmth necessary for bread dough or a cool, smooth marble or stainlesssteel top for pastry. You can be sure this table is the foundation of every delicious purchase you take home from Wasaga Beach's newest bakery.

Amazing treats and Amanda herself is wonderful! If you are near Wasaga it’s worth a stop!! Allison W.

Best butter tarts ever. Gail C.

The Baker's Bench is Amanda's passion. Here, she creates fresh-baked, real ingredient custom cakes, scrumptious scones, bountiful butter tarts, celebrated chocolate chip cookies and more. Until recently, The Baker's Bench was in a shared kitchen at Tony B's Variety and Gift on River Road East. For Amanda, it made sense to follow her dreams to Wasaga Beach, a place filled with fond childhood memories of family summer visits. Using social media, a cell phone, and the strength of her baking skills, Amanda has been selling her highly sought-after baked goods to those in the know for two years. At farmer's markets and craft shows, and with the community's support, word of her baking talent spread far and wide. And, though the last year has brought The Baker's Bench a slew of superfans and repeat customers, Amanda's future is about to get even brighter. The Baker's Bench has moved into a space of its own at The Stonebridge Town Centre, where Amanda has big plans for the future of her made-fresh baking and, finally, a commercial kitchen of her own. Work is currently underway on the new space, but Amanda and The Baker's Bench are spending the interim in a temporary kitchen at 333 Main Street in Wasaga Beach (formerly Swiss Chalet - Stonebridge Town Centre). If the first couple of days in her new, temporary location were any indication, Amanda is off to a great start. Baking more than she ever has for a single day, her highly sought-after baked goods sold out every day. But, don't worry; plans are underway for more staff, more baking and more not-to-be-missed cookies, cakes and scones.

Very highly recommended. Try it, you won’t be disappointed. Susan D.

You can savour the delicious carry-out baked goods from The Baker's Bench by calling 704-444-4803 or messaging them at @TheBakersBench. Make sure custom cakes and orders are made a few weeks ahead of time to ensure full customer satisfaction. Fingers crossed, the summer will bring Amanda to her new, permanent home where she can add new products, new customers and more great fresh baking.

This awesome cat is a very sweet boy who arrived at the GTHS animal centre not too long ago. Tux is a happy-golucky sort of fella. He loves receiving love and affection from people and he is quite laid back, too. He should be the only cat in a household though. That’s because he is susceptible to kitty colds. It’s the reason he is in the GTHS Special Paws program. He has been feeling better after getting some medicine, but this is something he will struggle with. Take a moment and read all about this lovely cat: https://www.gths.ca/animals-for-adoption/

Making good baseball players great When Kirk and Kelly Smith had the dream to build an indoor baseball training facility in New Lowell, it was not just for their two boys. They had all the players they have come to know and love over the years in mind. They want to see all baseball players of all ages have an opportunity to grow and step up their game to the next level, and they want to help players with their developmental training. Smith Brothers Baseball moved from their ten-year home in New Lowell to their new property in Phelpston in September of 2021. Although, they were looking to expand and grow the business, they needed the space to make their wildest dreams come true. Smith Brothers Baseball is now open with batting tunnels and gym space.

The property has three outbuildings, two of them being converted to usable baseball and gym space. The first of the buildings, which is now batting tunnels, needed very few changes; adding a furnace, turf, netting, and some paint got the building up and opened by November. The more significant challenge of creating the gym building. This building required adding extra walls, a bathroom, and all new siding, but the result ended up fantastic. The facility allows for private lessons, clinics, team rentals, and Central Ontario Reds team enough space to train for the winter months improving their batting and fitness skills.Futureplansinvolvea,full-functioningbaseballdiamond and a 120x45 foot addition for more training space and a parent lounge. "We want all of our customers to feel comfortable and at home while practicing and improving their skills with us, and we want to take them on this journey with us. Our new location offers space to grow and to experience the great outdoors, the way baseball should be experienced in warmer months, that is.”

Moving from a 12,000 SQFT space in a pandemic came with its challenges, but the end goal will be worth it, and Smith Brothers were ready for a challenge and a change.

BUSINESS PROFILE:

Eyes and Ears Inc.

“We’ll see you hear” Mark Davies, a Registered Optician/Hearing Instrument Specialist, is the owner of Eyes and Ears Inc. Born in Birmingham, England, Mark lived in Brampton and Sudbury before moving to Wasaga Beach with his wife Michelle, an RPN, in 2012 where they have established personal and professional roots. Mark opened the business to give people an alternative option to purchasing eyeglasses and hearing aids at a reasonable price. Opticians measure, make, fit, repair, and sell eyeglasses; they don’t test eyes. Think of opticians as being similar to a pharmacist in that you see your family doctor, in this case, your optometrist; then they give you a prescription which you can take to a pharmacy, in this case, the optical store. An optician will fill the prescription with eyeglasses, sunglasses, or safety glasses. Similarly, hearing instrument specialists fit, program, repair, and sell hearing aids and custom ear molds for noise protection, sleeping, swimming, and even music. They are also qualified to test the hearing of adults and remove wax from ear canals. Audiologists perform other more in-depth hearing tests and can test children.

includes a no-charge prescription change within 15 months of purchase. Mark can direct bill to a customer’s insurance company, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), and Ontario Works. Eyes and Ears offer hearing tests, wax removal from ear canals, and can show you inside your ear with a video otoscope, as well as fit/program hearing aids. Hearing aids are available starting at $1500 a pair, there is a 30 day no-charge trial, have a 3-year warranty, 2-year Loss and Damage policy and all follow-up adjustments are included. “Telecare is a unique feature of my business. I have the ability to make adjustments to hearing aids over the internet. The client simply downloads a free app, and their hearing aids can be adjusted anywhere by me. It’s like a Zoom meeting, from the comfort of their own home, while on vacation or anywhere in the world as long as there is a good WiFi connection. I can see and hear them and they can see and hear me!”

Eyes and Ears offers a wide variety of over 200 eyeglass frames, including designer frames, Leon Max and Michael Adams, and two made-in-Canada lines. As mentioned above, Mark started his business to offer quality products at a reasonable price to his customers. Prescription eyeglasses

The best thing I love about this business is the look on the clients’ faces when they put that first set of eyeglasses on and gaze around in amazement or when they put hearing aids on and hear things they haven’t heard in years. I remember fitting an older man who didn’t speak English with hearing aids. He brought his daughter and grandchildren into the office with him to interpret, and when I put them in his ears, his grandson spoke to him, and the man started to cry. He told his daughter that it was the first time he had understood his grandson speak. Then we all started crying! It’s times like that when you know you’ve made the right choice.”

Do you know someone who could use a free set of hearing aids? In honour of Better Hearing Month, we are donating a free pair of Signia Charge and Go 5 AX hearing aids with custom earmolds to a special person who is in dire need and may not be able to afford them or just does not take the time to look after themselves because they are too busy helping others! Please nominate that special someone by sending an email to wasagaeyesandears@gmail.com telling them why this person deserves a FREE set of hearing aids! Nomination ends May 31st, 2022. (Selection of winner is at sole discretion of Eyes and Ears Inc.)

start at only $150 for single vision and $250 for progressive bifocals. This includes frame, lenses and an anti-reflective coating. All frames and lenses come with a two-year warranty; progressive lenses for adults have a 90-day warranty against fit/adaptation issues. The childrens’ package

Locally owned and operated. We service all hearing aid brands and offer minor repairs in office. 1-207 Main St., Wasaga Beach, ON L9Z 2L3 | wasagaeyesandears@gmail.com |

INSOMNIA Everyone occasionally has sleep problems that arise from everyday stresses such as moving, finances, work, and even happy events such as weddings or preparing for a vacation. Sleeping problems typically resolve on their own within a few days or weeks. Insomnia develops when the sleep issues persist for at least three months and when a person has difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up much earlier than they planned to. Could you be making insomnia worse? We know the importance of getting adequate sleep to function and maintain our mental health. When we feel groggy, sluggish, snappy, and tired after a bad night’s sleep, this affects our ability to think clearly at work or study.

ASSESSMENTS Adult ADHD Learning Problems Anxiety, Depression, Trauma

What does the typical person who has insomnia do? They may go to bed earlier or wake up later, start taking sleeping pills or melatonin (which does not require a prescription), buy a better pillow or mattress, start practicing meditation, listen to soft relaxing music, or make up lost sleep by napping, or sleeping in on the weekends. People also start worrying about their sleeping difficulties and begin to feel anxious. Typical worries include thoughts of whether they can fall asleep, how much time is left before they need to get up, feeling terrible the next day, will they be able to function, or whether they’ll get sick from sleep deprivation. The worry of increasing the dosage of sleeping pills or a life-long dependency adds to people’s anxiety about their insomnia. Although what started as good attempts to solve one’s sleep problems, the insomniac feels less and less in control of their sleep. Effective treatment for insomnia: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Research has shown that effective psychological treatment for insomnia has been successfully employed for over 30 years. Specifically, CognitiveBehavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i) has been shown by research to improve insomnia by simply changing behaviours that maintain insomnia, such as avoiding exercise close to bedtime or taking naps during the day. CBT-i helps individuals enforce a plan to minimize their time in bed, which seems counter-intuitive at first, but works extremely well at removing those anxious associations with the bed. The other major problem with insomnia is the development of negative beliefs and worry about not being able to sleep, which leads to anxiety and sleep-related thoughts, which are counteractive to getting a good night’s sleep. Many people with insomnia have reported that they are “fully awake,” when they get into bed, even though they were very sleepy just a few moments before. CBT-i is a simple and effective intervention for treating insomnia if there are no other mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety present. Even individuals who have had insomnia for many years see improvements in their sleep with this treatment. Information about CBT-i can be found on the Canadian Sleep Society website: https://css-scs.ca/ SUBMITTED BY: Dr. Syb Pongracic, Clinical Psychologist PeakMinds Psychology Services

BUSINESS PROFILE:

Let’s get Saucy! Saucy Pasta and Gourmet Foods began with a love of Italian cooking. Founder, Rick Gillman, evolved his passion for Italian cooking into an obsession, learning the nuances of the traditional recipes he lovingly sourced from Italy and around the globe. His love of premium and novel ingredients results in a unique fusion of traditional and modern Italian flavours.

Many varieties of sauces are available: Vegetarian, Rosé, Beef Bolognese, Chicken Breast Cacciatore, Fire Roasted Red Pepper, Roasted Red Pepper Rose, Tracy’s Arrabbiata, Puttanesca, Caper & Kalamata, and Heretic Spirits A la Vodka - as well as Alfredo and Pesto, three Vegan and eight Vegetarian options - all Gluten Free.

After beginning Saucy Pasta in 2014 and closing due to health reasons, the seed was already planted. Rick and Tracy recognized the rapidly changing restaurant landscape during the pandemic and saw an opportunity to create a new model; Saucy Artisan Pasta was born. Their first location opened in Thornbury in 2020. After selling out almost daily, Tracy and Rick decided to scale up to meet both the demand of their regular clientelle and the many requests from local restaurants and stores interested in carrying their quality pasta. As a result, Saucy Artisan Pasta’s new flagship store and Pasta Factory opened in Cranberry Mews in Collingwood in the winter of 2021.

Other specialties include in-house fresh baked daily demi-baguettes and Rosemary Foccacia, made-from-scratch Tiramisu, Fresh Lobster and Ricotta Cannelloni, Jumbo Stuffed Spinach and Ricotta or Beef Stuffed Shells, Lemon Biscotti, Fresh Shaved Parmesan Reggiano, Brie/Walnut/Pear Ravioli and much, much more. Selections change daily. Hot take-out food is coming to the menu this summer. Saucy Pasta is also the exclusive regional distributor of Magiccann Pain relief topicals.

Welcome, Saucy Pasta 2.0

Saucy Pasta offers a vast array of over 30 varieties of fresh pasta shapes and flavour infusions, made fresh daily, ranging from traditional to unique and novel. They create a dozen different sauces - made from fresh milled tomatoes - not a concentrate like most restaurants use. Saucy creates handmade ravioli, cannelloni, and four varieties of lasagna, assembled daily from scratch. Rick’s penchant for premium ingredients includes using specially sourced non-GMO flour, spring water, sea salt, local free-range eggs and chicken, local pasture-raised beef, and local, seasonal produce.

Saucy’s fresh lasagna is legendary. There are eleven layers: five layers of herb and garlic-infused sheets, five layers of sauce, ricotta cheese in the middle, finished with a layer of mozzarella. Four varieties made daily: Vegetarian, Fire Roasted Red Pepper, Beef Bolognese, and Chicken Breast Cacciatore. Fresh, frozen, and gluten-free are available. If you prefer to make your own lasagna, fresh lasagna sheets are available.

ACTUAL SOCIAL MEDIA FEeDBACK: Best lasagna we have ever tasted. We will be back real soon! – Lani Bought a lasagna and it was fantastic!! Best I have ever had! What a difference fresh pasta makes to the dish! Look forward to trying more dishes! – Lynn

Saucy offers an incredible array of infused Pasta such as 5 Fresh Herb and Garlic, Spinach, Lemon Peppercorn, and Sundried Tomato and more exotic varieties like Squid Ink, Lemon and Sage, Porcini Mushroom, and Wild Leek infused. The selection changes daily, as do the daily specials - usually posted on Facebook and Instagram. Saucy’s fresh-milled tomato sauces are prepared using premium San Marzano tomatoes slow-cooked with fresh herbs and produce. Meat sauces use premium, local, naturally raised meats and premium fresh seafood.

Wasaga Adventure Park

Where the adventure begins Husband and wife team Steve and Donna Langman are celebrating their 30th year in business this June! Steve had played paintball a couple of times and thought that the town of Wasaga Beach would be an excellent place to put a paintball field. He had been in the military for five years before he went to school for architectural design. While in school, Steve borrowed some money from his parents, leased some land, and gave his crazy idea a go. The business was demanding, and the rewards were good, so he chose to focus on the business and has never looked back. Donna was a teacher and had the administrative skills to run the business. “We want to help people gather, celebrate and have fun,” says Donna.

“We love helping the mom make an amazing birthday party for her child, help the best man plan the most memorable bachelor party, help the boss host an awesome team building event, or give the coach and his team an amazing end-of-year party. The laughter and the stories are fabulous! People come to us for fun and return because our amazing staff has helped them make some awesome memories. We work with each person to help them plan their adventure.” Wasaga Adventure Park offers eight different games that start at age 5+ to get your adrenaline flowing. During July, they operate a wildly popular day camp and host paintball and airsoft events throughout the year. Eat, sleep, cheer, repeat CheerCore started in Collingwood in 2009 and has grown to over 100 athletes in Recreational, Elite, and Worlds-level programs. The sport of cheerleading is evolving, and as a parent, I am happy to see that it is growing so popular. It has benefited my daughter in so many ways - physically, emotionally and socially. Cheerleading is a team sport that incorporates a co-ed relationship emphasizing people’s strengths to achieve the best outcome for the team. It builds confidence as you make new friends, learn to perform in front of an audience and face new challenges. In 2021, the sport of cheerleading gained full International Olympic Committee recognition! Three teams from CheerCore Collingwood made their way to the Canadian Cheer All-Star National Championships in Niagara Falls on April 8-10. For three days, you watch two and a half minute routines of intense stunting, tumbling and jumping in sparkly uniforms by hundreds of teams. CheerCore performed amazingly, and Niagara Falls was the perfect backdrop to celebrate their hardwood and commitment all season.

TIME TO BRING PLAY BACK INTO YOUR LIFE! When I think back over the last two years, I can’t help but reflect on how much more difficult things would have been without the creative minds. What I mean by that is that the music, books, art, home décor, gardens, and, yes even Netflix enabled us to survive the isolation that a pandemic can bring with it. I chuckle whenever I hear someone say, “I’m not really into the arts.” I want to reply, “oh yes, you are, you just don’t know it”! It’s not that I am trying to believe everyone should devote their life to working in the arts, but truly, it is all around us, in almost everything we do or experience. We know this when we are children, and then we (or others) try to squish this out of us by the time we reach adulthood. At Theatre Collingwood, we have spent the last two years staying connected with our community, helping people to find creative ways to spend their time, working tirelessly with CACE (Collingwood Arts, Culture and Entertainment group) to see that a long-overdue arts facility is built in Collingwood, and critically looking at what we as a company strive to represent as we move forward. Oh! And, we employed 14 performers last summer in our Porchside Festival when there was no work for artists to be found. It is now time to bring PLAY back into your life! We are announcing our 2022 Theatre Season with five fantastic productions. We begin June 1st–5th, with A NIGHT IN VEGAS, featuring the songs of Sammy Davis Jr, Tony Bennett, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra and many more, performed by two of Canada’s best showmen, former member of the a capella group The Nylons with two new chart topping jazz albums, Micah Barnes, and 4 time Juno Award winner, Billy Newton-Davis. This will be a fantastic night of entertainment… VEGAS style! August 2nd–6th, we will bring you A SCANDALL FOR ALL SEASON, an original farce coming to us from Theatre by the Bay that tells the story of two socialites who engage in a “battle of the bulge” over the sexy, progressive Mayor. Is there corruption in local politics? There definitely is humour! Leisa Way and The Wayward Wind Band will perform their new show ROCK N ROLL IS HERE TO STAY August 16th–20th, keeping the classic rock flame burning in this high-energy show that is mesmerizing audiences with the electrifying sounds of the hottest rock stars and bands in history. From September 20th–24th, we will present Norm Foster’s THE FOURSOME. Four friends are home for their fifteen-year college reunion; a great time to go out for a game of golf and catch up on each other’s lives. Unlike their college days, the conversation doesn’t include talk of beer and final exams, but of colonoscopies, home-security systems, alcoholism, Buddhism, and more. This show is coming from The Foster Festival and will actually be performed at a local golf course! October 5th–9th, we have a beautiful piece of work for you, MARY OF SHANTY BAY. This touching and historic story comes from the diaries of Mary Sophia Gapper, who visited Canada in 1828, married Edward O’Brien, and then settled at the ‘edge of the world’ in Oro Township. This is a heartwarming examination of a part of our regional history and the settlement of Shanty Bay. And, just in case you think that is not enough for you, we have 39 performances happening on or around porches in Collingwood throughout the month of July in our PORCHSIDE FESTIVAL!

Driving habits that could help the planet Habits can be hard to kick. Many people need a unique catalyst in order to ditch habits they’ve long wanted to put in their rearview mirrors. New Year’s Day is one notable example of a unique event that compels millions of people to make positive changes every year. Though it might not be a cause for celebration like the dawn of a new year, increased awareness of climate change and its effects could be the catalyst many people need to make positive, planet-friendly changes to their daily routines.

A far more effective and considerably less harmful way to warm up a vehicle is to do so for 30 seconds and then drive slowly for the first few minutes. Purchase a fuel-efficient vehicle Drivers looking for their next vehicle can prioritize fuel efficiency if they want their driving habits to have a smaller carbon footprint. Electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and cleaner-burning gasoline vehicles are among the more efficient and less polluting cars and trucks.

Driving habits are one area where individuals can alter their daily routines in ways that benefit the planet. These eco-friendly alterations can be instituted each day by individuals who want to do their part to combat climate change.

Make fewer trips Many driving trips are taken for social, recreational, shopping, or family/personal errands. By combining these trips, drivers can greatly reduce their driving miles. Fewer trips conserve fuel and can reduce air pollution. Opt for public transit, walking and biking instead of driving when possible.

Avoid aggressive driving Aggressive driving is both a safety risk and a threat to the environment. Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage in light-duty vehicles by as much as 40 percent in stop-and-go traffic and by as much as 30 percent at highway speeds. Avoid idling Many drivers have long relied on idling to warm up their vehicles on cold mornings. However, modern vehicles do not need to warm up in temperatures above 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-18 degrees Celcius). It’s important that drivers recognize this, as idling wastes fuel and increases the

If the ethical considerations are not enough to convince you to change your habits, maybe the financial benefits can give you a nudge in the eco direction! That’s right - eco-friendly driving will save you money. Driving in a better way for the environment means reducing fuel consumption. Less fuel consumed means fewer dollars spent at the gas station. It’s as simple as that!

Many people are drawn to motorcycles because of the intensity and excitement riding provides. Motorcycles are fun and routinely draw attention from other motorists. What motorcycles add in terms of speed and excitement, they may lose in safety, especially when compared to cars and trucks. Motorcycle riders and their passengers have the highest risk of fatal injury among all motor vehicle users. Per mile travelled, motorcyclist fatalities occur nearly 28 times as often as passenger vehicle occupant fatalities in traffic crashes. Thankfully, the risks associated with riding motorcycles can be reduced with some simple safety precautions. Gear: Motorcycle riders can improve the barrier between themselves and the road with the proper gear. Quality leather jackets and pants, helmets, gloves, and nonskid boots can protect the body from severe injuries.

Improve visibility: Reflective tape added to clothing can help motorcyclists become more visible to other drivers; otherwise, wear bright clothing colours. Also, riding with others as a group increases visibility. Familiarize yourself with the bike:Motorcycle riders are not advised to take an unfamiliar bike into heavy traffic. Instead, if the bike has never been ridden before, become familiar with its handling and responsiveness in a controlled area that isn’t full of traffic before taking it on the open road. Stay out of blind spots: Consumer Reports says roughly two-thirds of all motorcycle accidents are caused by a car driver violating a motorcycle rider’s right of way. Motorcycle riders should never assume a driver sees them. Staying out of blind spots and steering clear of turning vehicles can help.

Adjust for weather: Riding in the rain or other challenging conditions is riskier since the roads are slippery. Slow down or keep the bike at home in inclement weather. Remove distractions: Stow cell phones away so your attention is not drawn away from the road.

WE ARE OPEN BY APPOINTMENT ONLY

Remain sober and alert: Don’t ride while under the influence of alcohol or drugs (including over-the-counter if they cause drowsiness). Also, do not drive while drowsy, as it is just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated. Be aware of obstacles: Motorcyclists need to be very careful about road obstacles, more so than other drivers. This includes uneven road surfaces, fallen branches, oil slicks, and/ or wet spots. In addition, ConsumerSafety.org says a motorcycle has less contact with the road than a car, making it more likely to skid out of control or throw a rider from the bike. Motorcycle riders need to be more cautious on the road because they are at increased risk for injury.

Born to play hockey The U15 Wasaga Stars Rep Hockey Team has had a great season! They qualified to go to the Georgian Bays, became the Georgian Bay Champions, then onto the OMHA Championship tournament, where they won three games and lost their fourth in the semifinals of Ontario minor hockey. All of these players have worked so hard this season, with a regularseason record of 19 wins, two losses, and one tie. "We can't express how proud we are of this team and how the boys came together as a unit! A memorable year for these amazing young men and their accomplishments! We want to thank Coach Phil Grainger for his observant eyes and for having these players grow into amazing hockey players and his bench staff, Cody Johnson and Tyler Johnson, for their endless devotion and motivation to this team. This team needed all three of them! Thank you for all you have done - we appreciate all of you! Trainer Don Sorensen from Body and Balance was fantastic, and Assistant Trainer Rick Collins was always there to attend to the players' athletic health and safety; we are very thankful! As well as Tony Turner and Dan Fusco for stepping up when needed to run practices! Thank you to our sponsor, Selling The Team of RE/MAX By The Bay Brokerage, for supporting us on our Journey to the OMHA Championship. Visit North America's Smallest Jail in Creemore Built in 1892 at a cost of $425.20, Creemore’s jail is the smallest 3-cell structure in Ontario and possibly all of North America. Under the direction of the village Constable, this little “lock-up” served for half a century as a secure place to jail lawbreakers. For offences like drunkenness or disturbing the peace, inmates were lodged here over night. Those charged with more serious crimes were held here until transported to the County Sheriff in Barrie. In the 1940s, new provincial police regulations closed this local lock-up. In the 1960s it re-opened as a tourist attraction, promoted as “North America’s Smallest Jail.” Although other communities may contest the claim, Creemore continues to affirm its title as a village with “a big heart and the smallest jail.” The jail is open to the public in the summer and is located next to a restored log cabin with history host on hand each Saturday during the summer season. Wishes do come true The first annual Cal Patterson Memorial Hockey Tournament in support of The Living Wish Foundation on April 1 and 2 at Collingwood's Central Arena. Cal Patterson served as Mayor of Wasaga Beach from 2003 to 2014 and Simcoe County Warden and charter member of The Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach. His leadership and dedication were unwavering, and his commitment to Wasaga Beach continued after he left municipal politics. The Living Wish Foundation believes that Cal's wish would have been to keep doing amazing things for Simcoe County, and they are making sure that wish is granted. Twelve women's hockey teams took to the ice. The first Puck Drop was handled by Cal's Grandsons, Ethan and Gavin.
