Pulling an all-nighter on the slopes The 24-hour Blue Mountain relay returned this year after a one-year hiatus on February 26-27. This event featured exhilarating outdoor thrills, warm music, great food, good spirits, participant perks and prizes. Over $137,000 in pledges were collected and donated to Special Olympics Ontario, and Collingwood General and Marine Hospital Foundation. Teams (minimum 5 and maximum 12 members) were recognized for most charitable funds raised and completed runs within the 24-hour period. Is it just me, or did March fly by? When temperatures rise, sap starts to flow, flowers bloom and happy chatter can be heard from the trees, it can only mean one thing: spring is in the air! With the Covid-19 restrictions lifted, it's time to shake off the winter blues and head outside to enjoy all of the fantastic things our area has to offer. We're so lucky to live in such a beautiful area with no shortage of things to do. As the Russian invasion of Ukraine has continued, it has never been more evident that we are so truly blessed to live in Canada. I know it's a bit early for sunflowers on the cover, but displaying sunflowers has become one of the many ways the world shows solidarity for the Ukrainian people. Sunflowers (soniashnyk) are Ukraine's national flower and have been grown since the mid-18th century. Ukraine is the world's leading producer of sunflower seeds, cultivated to be eaten or crushed into oil, a key ingredient in cooking and an export product of vital importance. Displaying sunflowers shows love, support and solidary to the people of Ukraine. A sunflower will stand tall and find the light on the darkest of days. Never was there a better reason to embrace the sunflower, a symbol of resistance, peace and unity. Thank you to everyone for sending us your smiles! We love to see your pictures! We love to hear your stories! Do you have something of interest to tell? Please don't hesitate to send us your ideas; we always want to feature local people, organizations, places and more. Please let me know of any events that are coming up or if you know of an organization that's doing great things and should be recognized for its efforts. Just send me an email: info@georgianlifemedia.ca, and I will consider it for an upcoming issue. Thank you to all of our readers for picking us up every month and our followers for liking and commenting on our social media posts. We're honoured to be a part of your world. Have a great month!

Hockey for hope The Collingwood Girls Hockey Association’s 5th annual event, Hockey for Hope, was held on February 26th to support My Friend’s House at the Eddie Bush Memorial Arena in Collingwood. Collingwood Lightning faced off with several other area girls’ hockey teams. People who bought a fun puck for $5.00 could chuck a puck into centre ice between the four games. The closest puck to the centre won a prize. It was great fun for a worthy cause. PHOTOS | STORY: BRYAN DAVIES PHOTOGRAPHY. See more photos on www.georgianlife.ca

CELEBRATING 7 YEARS IN BUSINESS!

Ted Yoannou: In Your Corner Every Dog Has Its Day If you're anything like me, it's a constant struggle to find the ideal work-life balance. Work more. Stop and smell the roses. Hard work never killed anyone. You can't take it with you to the grave. Money doesn't grow on trees. The best things in life are free. Idle hands are the devil's playground. Work to live. Live to work. Work smarter, not longer.

6 HELPFUL TIPS TO READY YOUR HOME FOR SPRING:

Geez, it's all very confusing and contradictory.

1. Clean gutters, all roof drainage systems and inspect roof 2. Wash exterior windows 3. Inspect and clean out foundation vents and window wells

But, on a recent morning walk through my favourite forest in Wasaga with our black lab Scooby, my faithful companion gave me the answer: "Let Hercules himself do what he may, The cat will mew, and dog will have his day."

4. Clean outdoor furniture and BBQ 5. Clean exterior vent caps and grills 6. Replace and/or clean filters in furnace, HRV, kitchen exhaust hood, bathroom exhaust fans and dryer vent pipe

WE INSPECT:

Of course, that's it, Scooby! Once again, you're bang on; the dog will have his day. The solution is so obvious: we must observe more dog holidays. Where should we start? How about modestly with one or two days per month dedicated to taking time off in appreciation of our best friends? There is an honorary tribute for almost every day on the calendar to celebrate our most loyal buddies, but I've narrowed it down to these monthly ones for me:

CENTURY HOMES • RESIDENTIAL HOMES • LOG HOMES COTTAGES & VACATION PROPERTIES • WOOD BURNING APPLIANCES NEW CONSTRUCTION (TARION) • RURAL & FARM PROPERTIES CONDOMINIUMS • COMMERCIAL & INDUSTRIAL PROPERTIES

Each day, a new woman becomes a mother for the first time or all over again. Being a mother changes a person’s life in dramatic ways. Mother’s Day is a great time to honour mothers and attempt to give back just a portion of the unwavering love and devotion moms offer their children. Some children provide large gestures, while others feel the little things can help a mom feel appreciated.

How non-traditional families can celebrate Mother's Day No two families are the same. What may be “normal” for one family could be quite unique to another. Because families are so different, days such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Grandparent’s Day, and even days devoted to siblings or cousins present opportunities for families to celebrate diversity while honouring their family members.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Branch out to many caregivers Certainly a person becomes a mother if she has given birth to a child. But, motherhood is a much broader concept. Many women are mothers to children with whom they have little to no biological connection. Some may be relatives that filled the void left by a mother who passed away or was unable to care for children. Anyone who has stepped into the role of caretaker can and should be celebrated on Mother’s Day.

AAA STEAK $25 & LOBSTER 707 River Road West, Wasaga beach, ON 705-429-0007 | www.chucksroadhouse.com

Recognizing stepmothers The notion of the “evil stepmother” in fairy tales is inaccurate. Many children have very close relationships with their stepmothers - even retaining relationships should the stepmother divorce out of the family. Modern families even include strong connections between stepmothers and biological mothers, with each doing her part to make sure children are getting the love and support they need. Same-sex relationships Families continue to evolve and same-sex couples are raising children. These non-traditional families can be creative as they navigate holidays like Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. One way to do so is to celebrate one parent on Mother’s Day and the other on Father’s Day. However, families also can remove gender labels and celebrate both days as Parents Day, casting love and affection on caregivers however they see fit.

AUTO & MARINE DETAILING SERVICES PAINT CORRECTION CERAMIC COATING

Absent but not forgotten Some mothers are not present in children’s lives for various reasons. These can include death, incarceration, illness, military deployment, or enrollment in a rehabilitation program. Mother’s Day can be a time of mixed emotions for individuals whose moms are not present, and families can work together to find ways to celebrate. This may be visiting the cemetery to pay respects or sending a letter to express one’s feelings. Individuals also can recognize those people who act as surrogate mothers, including special friends or coworkers who always listen and offer advice.

Cancer Chat Cancer is widely prevalent in Canada and around the world, leading to increased worry about a lump or an ache or pain that does not go away. Anne Marie Ireland, Barrie resident and advisor for cancer care organizations across Ontario, was simply working at the computer when she noticed a new lump. Her hand reached to her neck, likely a movement performed a thousand times in the past. But, this time, something different: a small lump on the right side of her neck. "It was not there before, and then it was." So Anne Marie started to do research. Anne Marie has worked as a mental health and addictions professional for several organizations throughout her career, providing support and information for individuals and family members impacted by many health concerns, including cancer. For years, Anne Marie has displayed a strong commitment to voluntary roles with cancer awareness organizations such as Livestrong Foundation, Canadian Partnership Against Partnership, Cancer Care Ontario, Terry Fox Foundation, and Canadian Cancer Society. "I do believe that with connections to great support organizations, insight and shared experiences can make a world of difference." Possibly, the worry we have about new lumps comes from nescience. Anne Marie says, "Try to do your homework about your health so you can ask the right questions. But, don't simply trust Dr. Google! That really scared me!" The next time Anne Marie was at her dentist, she asked him about the lump. The dentist suggested getting it checked. A biopsy was performed, and at age 55, Anne Marie was diagnosed with stage-2 parotid cancer. Parotid tumours involve abnormal growth of cells in the salivary glands and constitute 80% of salivary gland tumours. Parotid glands located in front of the ears on each side of the face produce saliva that aids in digestion. Cancer of the salivary gland is a rare type of head and neck cancer making up only six percent of this cancer type. Most parotid tumours are benign, but some tumours can become cancerous. Salivary gland cancer often presents as a lump near the ear, cheek, jaw, lip, or inside the mouth. Symptoms such as fluid in the ear, trouble opening the mouth, numbness or weakness in the face that does not go away should be discussed with a doctor. The treatment paradigm is surgery to remove the tumour; however, more aggressive tumours or those involving spread to the lymph nodes are treated with a course of radiation or chemotherapy depending on the size of the tumour and extent of spread.

Anne Marie remarks, "Initially, I thought, why did this happen? I have always been active and athletic, never sick. I have never smoked, and I have no known family history of cancer. This diagnosis knocked me off my feet." Anne Marie encourages, "Stay informed about your diagnosis. There are no stupid questions. It is your body, your life. Be an active member of your treatment and care." Anne Marie is an advocate for organizations like Livestrong Foundation that empower the patient and family with the knowledge they need in times like this. Anne Marie underwent surgery at the Toronto General Hospital in Toronto. The surgery was performed by Dr. Irish followed by radiation treatment at the Princess Margaret Hospital under the care of Dr. O’Sullivan, prompting the joke she, Anne Marie Ireland, had the “Luck of the Irish” with her. Anne Marie’s surgery went well, but due to the location of her tumor, facial nerve involvement complicated surgery leading to a partial facial paralysis that still persists. In 2012, a founding member of the Beastie Boys rap group, Adam Yauch age 47, died after a three-year battle with salivary cancer. Anne Marie, who had followed his journey, said this was a dark moment that left her wondering about her own fate. Yauch had an aggressive cancer that spread from his parotid gland to a lymph node. Fortunately, for Anne Marie, the lymph node was not involved, and chemotherapy was not required. However, Anne Marie did receive thirty-three head and neck radiation treatments over seven weeks. Anne Marie's message, "Don't give up on hope! Even if you are terrified, try to maintain a positive attitude, and laugh as much as possible. This will often help you through tough times." Anne Marie advises you to reach out and see a therapist or counsellor about a cancer diagnosis affecting you or your family. "You do not have to go through it alone, and there are many resources you can connect with." Organizations such as the Georgian Bay Cancer Support Center in (Penetanguishene) or Gildas Club Simcoe Muskoka (Barrie), provide free cancer support for individuals and families. These organizations address 'Psychosocial Oncology,' a specialty cancer care concerned with understanding and treating cancer's social, psychological, and emotional aspects, dealing with the human need to improve the quality of life for those affected by cancer. "Everyone there is going through the same thing. So there is a lot of comfort and support there." Submitted by: Dr. Oliver Kent, Cancer researcher and Senior Scientist at adMare BioInnovations. Did You Know?

Rich in antioxidants and high in fibre, rhubarb may promote brain, bone and heart health. If you are prone to kidney stones, your doctor will likely recommend that you avoid rhubarb. Warning - Always throw out the rhubarb leaves as they are poisonous. The leaves contain very high levels of oxalates that may cause stomach upset and kidney problems.

BUSINESS PROFILE:

Let’s get Saucy! Saucy Pasta and Gourmet Foods began with a love of Italian cooking. Founder, Rick Gillman, evolved his passion for Italian cooking into an obsession, learning the nuances of the traditional recipes he lovingly sourced from Italy and around the globe. His love of premium and novel ingredients results in a unique fusion of traditional and modern Italian flavours.

Many varieties of sauces are available: Vegetarian, Rosé, Beef Bolognese, Chicken Breast Cacciatore, Fire Roasted Red Pepper, Roasted Red Pepper Rose, Tracy’s Arrabbiata, Puttanesca, Caper & Kalamata, and Heretic Spirits A la Vodka - as well as Alfredo and Pesto, three Vegan and eight Vegetarian options - all Gluten Free.

After beginning Saucy Pasta in 2014 and closing due to health reasons, the seed was already planted. Rick and Tracy recognized the rapidly changing restaurant landscape during the pandemic and saw an opportunity to create a new model; Saucy Artisan Pasta was born. Their first location opened in Thornbury in 2020. After selling out almost daily, Tracy and Rick decided to scale up to meet both the demand of their regular clientelle and the many requests from local restaurants and stores interested in carrying their quality pasta. As a result, Saucy Artisan Pasta’s new flagship store and Pasta Factory opened in Cranberry Mews in Collingwood in the winter of 2021.

Other specialties include in-house fresh baked daily demi-baguettes and Rosemary Foccacia, made-from-scratch Tiramisu, Fresh Lobster and Ricotta Cannelloni, Jumbo Stuffed Spinach and Ricotta or Beef Stuffed Shells, Lemon Biscotti, Fresh Shaved Parmesan Reggiano, Brie/Walnut/Pear Ravioli and much, much more. Selections change daily. Hot take-out food is coming to the menu this summer. Saucy Pasta is also the exclusive regional distributor of Magiccann Pain relief topicals.

Welcome, Saucy Pasta 2.0

Saucy Pasta offers a vast array of over 30 varieties of fresh pasta shapes and flavour infusions, made fresh daily, ranging from traditional to unique and novel. They create a dozen different sauces - made from fresh milled tomatoes - not a concentrate like most restaurants use. Saucy creates handmade ravioli, cannelloni, and four varieties of lasagna, assembled daily from scratch. Rick’s penchant for premium ingredients includes using specially sourced non-GMO flour, spring water, sea salt, local free-range eggs and chicken, local pasture-raised beef, and local, seasonal produce.

Saucy’s fresh lasagna is legendary. There are eleven layers: five layers of herb and garlic-infused sheets, five layers of sauce, ricotta cheese in the middle, finished with a layer of mozzarella. Four varieties made daily: Vegetarian, Fire Roasted Red Pepper, Beef Bolognese, and Chicken Breast Cacciatore. Fresh, frozen, and gluten-free are available. If you prefer to make your own lasagna, fresh lasagna sheets are available.

ACTUAL SOCIAL MEDIA FEeDBACK: Best lasagna we have ever tasted. We will be back real soon! – Lani Bought a lasagna and it was fantastic!! Best I have ever had! What a difference fresh pasta makes to the dish! Look forward to trying more dishes! – Lynn

HOME PROPERTY GUIDE

THESE LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN HELP YOU WITH YOUR NEEDS INSIDE & OUT!

What is a VOC and why should I care Volatile organic compounds, also known as VOCs, are a large group of chemicals commonly found in both indoor and outdoor air that can affect air quality. There are many sources in your home, such as glues, paints, varnishes, adhesives, furnishings, flooring, cleaning products, cooking and tobacco smoke.

• Open windows when outdoor air conditions are good. Check the outdoor air quality in your community by visiting the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI).

While some VOCs give off distinctive odours, they are often present even if you can’t smell them. Exposure to some VOCs indoors can affect your health, depending on which ones are present, the level present and how long you are exposed.

• Choose low-VOC products when possible. Some composite wood products (such as flooring), paints, varnishes and cleaning products emit fewer VOCs than others. • Ensure there is a good seal around any doors connecting the house to an attached garage.

VOCs can cause a variety of health effects including fatigue, headaches, breathing problems, and irritation of the eyes, nose and throat.

• Open windows when using cleaning products, especially those that have a strong smell.

Should I be worried? For most VOCs, levels found in indoor air in Canadian homes do not generally pose a significant health risk. However, some people may be more sensitive, such as those with asthma, those who are pregnant, children and seniors. That’s why it’s important to take steps to reduce VOCs in your home.

• Open windows when using home improvement products including glues, paints, varnishes and adhesives. • Always read and follow label instructions of cleaning and home improvement products. Always store products according to label directions and tightly seal containers to prevent VOC emission during storage.

Simple ways to reduce exposure: • Avoid smoking indoors. Smoke contains many different VOCs.

• Minimize the use of scented products, such as plug-in or aerosol air fresheners. These products often contain or produce VOCs to mask odours.

• Increase ventilation. When possible, use a range hood exhaust fan that vents outside when cooking. • Maintain your fireplaces and wood stoves, following the manufacturer’s instructions, and clean your chimneys regularly.

Planning ahead is vital to a successful renovation Remodelling projects are significant undertakings. Homeowners must consider a host of variables before any such project can begin. While planning ahead may take time, it is essential to ensure a successful renovation project completion. Consider these prerenovation planning pointers to help any job go smoothly. Determine your motivation for renovating Renovation projects often involve balancing needs and wants, and determining if a project is a necessity or a luxury can set the timeline and course of the project. Is the roof leaking? If so, immediate action is necessary. Could the kitchen be a bit more functional? If the kitchen is still manageable, a homeowner may be able to wait a little bit to get better prices on appliances or contracting services. Separating needs from wants helps homeowners map out a viable timeline that maximizes productivity and affordability.

Specialty cleaners of rugs and upholstery

Relax, leave the cleaning to us!

Get professional advice Many homeowners are under the impression that doing the work themselves can save a considerable amount of money. This may be the case for homeowners with renovation experience. But, by and large, professional contractors are an asset to any renovation. They can provide a realistic overview of the project, map out projected costs, point out areas that could be troublesome, and may have industry contacts that can keep supply costs low. Even if a homeowner does a portion of the job, a contractor can do the bulk of the work and keep the project on budget. Get necessary permits Permits are designed to ensure the work is being done to code and in a safe manner. However, they are not without additional costs and processing time, and that can cause some homeowners to skip this step. Factor the permit fees and processing times into the renovation plan. If it comes to light a homeowner did work without a required permit, they may face penalties; may have to tear out work done to have it inspected or redone; some may be unable to sell a home until permits have been obtained and work has been done to code. Homeowners' insurance coverage also may be affected if homeowners do not obtain the proper permits.

A house to call home

HOME & PROPERTY

Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay invited the community to a Groundbreaking Ceremony on Saturday, March 12th at 219 John Street in Stayner. The site will provide a new home for a local family in need of affordable housing. The excavation is underway, the foundation will soon be set and now all that’s left to do is finish building a house. “The family has been selected and will be introduced at the Groundbreaking Ceremony at the site of their future home.” said Joy Fleury, Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay. “When the work on the home is done, the family will have put in a minimum of 500 hours of volunteer time, which will be split between the working in the Habitat ReStore and helping build their new home.” The family qualified through a selection process and will partner with Habitat, complete their volunteer hours and once they move in, they’ll be paying a fixed percentage of their income on an interest-free, no down payment mortgage. Habitat South Georgian Bay’s mission is to provide simple, decent and affordable homes for local low-income families. “This build has been in the works for some time now between the pandemic restrictions and other delays, so it’s exciting to finally be breaking ground and getting a foundation in.” said Glenn MacAdam, Build Manager for Habitat SGB. “Once the foundation is completed, Royal Homes will deliver and assemble the shell of the home. Then we’ll need volunteers to come help with finishing the home.” In addition to build volunteers, they’ll also need people to help organize volunteers and arrange for food and refreshments for volunteers on site.

“The food and volunteer committees are such an important part of a build,” Joy explained. “We’re looking for people in the community who are able to help organize volunteers and most importantly, coordinate snacks and lunches for volunteers to keep them nourished so they can keep building. Habitat provides lunches for volunteers on site through donations from the community, local restaurants, church groups, or individuals.” Joy continued. The build project also received support from the Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach late last year and through a generous donation of an assortment of safety boots from Blundstone, volunteers who don’t have their own safety boots have an expanded selection of new steel toed boots to borrow for the day. Signs of winter lawn damage Mother Nature can be harsh on a lawn, and it’s up to homeowners to nurse their properties back to health after they endure the elements. Unfortunately, that’s often the case when winter ends, and homeowners uncover signs of damage to their lawns. Homeowners cannot begin to repair winter lawn damage until they learn to identify it, and the following are some telltale signs that winter took a harsh toll on a landscape. Wilted grass: Many things can cause the grass to wilt throughout winter, so homeowners may have to put on their detective’s cap to determine why grass that was healthy as recently as late fall is now wilted as the spring bloom begins. Grass adjacent to walkways and driveways might have wilted due to the application of de-icing solutions. Such products can prevent the formation of ice on driveways and walkways. However, when they’re tracked onto the grass by people or animals or blown there by winter winds, grass can wilt. Deep watering in spring can flush any lingering solution from the lawn. In future winters, homeowners can be as careful as possible when applying de-icing solutions, making a concerted effort to avoid spreading any onto the grass and limited applications to areas of the driveway and walkways that are not close to the grass.

Brown patches: Brown patches in a lawn often develop after heavy snowfall. Such patches tend to develop where large piles of shovelled snow were deposited, so inspect alongside driveways and walkways. Rake away part of the brown patches first. If green tissue is emerging beneath, the lawn will likely be fine in due time. However, suppose the area underneath is not green, and the surrounding regions are already turning green. In that case, homeowners may need to rake up dead tissue before applying topsoil to the affected spots. Once the topsoil is spread, some grass seed can be spread, and the grass should regain its green glory.

Gray or pink grass: Another indicator of winter lawn damage linked to snow is gray or pink grass. This is a byproduct of snow mould caused by lingering snow. Action may be unnecessary, as these circular patterns often go away on their own. If not, raking the affected areas might be enough to get the lawn on the road to recovery. However, if the issue continues to linger after raking, a topsoil application and subsequent seeding may be necessary. These are three common signs of winter lawn damage in areas where snowfall is significant during the coldest months of the year. Homeowners concerned about their damaged lawns are urged to contact a local landscape professional to correct any issues that linger into spring.

Pros and cons to open-concept homes KITCHEN CABINET PAINTING

Open-concept homes have become increasingly popular in recent years. An open-concept home is one in which the rooms flow into one another with limited obstruction from walls or other barriers. New single-family homes typically have fully or partially open layouts. While they may seem like a new trend, open floor plans are anything but. Early North American homes featured open, often one- or two-room units built around the central kitchen/hearth. This maximized warmth and functionality. Homes evolved as incomes grew, and soon homes had several smaller rooms with specialized functions. What’s old has become new again. However, before diving headfirst into a new home purchase or an extensive renovation to realize an open-concept dream, consider the pros and cons of this type of setup to determine if it’s right for you. Advantages of open floor plans: Open floor plans facilitate the flow of natural light throughout a space and can promote airflow, helping to reduce warm or cool pockets of air in otherwise closed-off rooms. Open homes make socializing easier, even when people are doing different things. For example, while someone is cooking dinner in the kitchen, they can still interact with someone else playing video games in the family room or paying bills in the home office. Entertaining also is more manageable, as mingling with guests is much more convenient when walls are not getting in the way.

4 Spades available: 30”, 54”, 60” and 90” Trees up to 12” in Caliper • Trees 6’-40’ tall Tree Moving and Tree Sales We handle more than 35 types of trees. We will track down the specific trees you are looking for.

A smaller home can feel much larger if it employs an open concept. The square footage is not divided into smaller quarters, which sometimes are rooms (such as formal dining rooms) that are only used a few times per year. This eliminates underused spaces and opens up sightlines in the layout. Real estate value has risen dramatically since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and prospective buyers may prefer an open-concept plan because it can help them minimize building costs. Disadvantages of open floor plans: Open layouts are not for everyone. The same sense of space that occurs when walls are taken down may make rooms feel cavernous and less cozy, particularly in homes with ample square footage. In addition, privacy can be hard to come by when all rooms feed into one another. When the kitchen is not separate from the family room space, it is easy for noise to compromise the area’s comfort levels. There is no hiding from noise in an open floor plan, as sounds from voices, television shows and appliances tend to echo and blend together. And, if the home is a singlestory layout, those noises from the main living areas also may carry to adjacent bedrooms.

Smoke and smells are other things to consider. When something on the stove spills over, a small range hood will not be practical for clearing smoke from a large space. Likewise, though the aroma of freshly cooked food is enticing, it can make it hard for cooks to keep guests out of the kitchen. Open-concept homes are popular, but homeowners should weigh the pluses and minuses to see if this trend is truly right for them.

Depaving paradise Keeping our streams clean and our communities cool Depave Paradise is a project of Green Communities Canada - engaging volunteers and neighbourhoods in communities, removing pavement and planting gardens filled with native species in its place. Hard surfaces, such as driveways, parking lots and buildings interrupt the natural water cycle by preventing rainwater from soaking into the ground and creating heat sinks, warming up our cities. By removing pavement and replacing it with native plants, trees and shrubs, we are increasing the infiltration rate, recharging our groundwater supply, and cooling our neighbourhoods. On April 22 at 10 am, please join community members to remove 110m 2 of asphalt by hand to transform part of a parking lot into a community space that boosts food security and environmental health. In partnership with The Town of Collingwood, The Environment Network is expanding a green space at Heritage Park that will feature native plant species, reduce stormwater run-off pollution, and reduce the risk of flooding in the area. The food grown in this community garden will be available to residents of Collingwood. It will also help stock the community fridge located at the Collingwood Youth Centre. Removing asphalt and concrete by hand at neighbourhood workbees is an exciting new trend that renews, beautifies and makes better use of neglected urban spaces. The hands-on depaving process captures the hearts and energies of diverse people with a shared goal of creating vibrant, beautiful and healthy communities. Depave Paradise demonstration projects motivate volunteers to continue depaving on their own properties or in common spaces. Why Depave by hand? Depaving by hand connects people to each other and to their neighbourhood, giving them a sense of ownership and inspiring them to make positive changes in their community.

Depaving is an excellent opportunity to educate the public about building our cities to capture stormwater, grow food, support wildlife, add to the urban tree canopy, and beautify our cities. Beyond community building, the benefits of depaving are numerous and include: • Decreasing the run-off of stormwater to lower its impacts on our sewers and help improve our community's water quality and restore natural hydrologic cycle • Increasing urban green space and ecosystems present in our cities and reversing the proliferation of hard surfaces • Educating residents about the effects of stormwater run-off and benefits of permeable surfaces, green space and reconnecting the urban landscape to nature • Fostering behavioural change and community engagement • Decrease the heat island effect and help cool urban areas

Every Day is Earth Day at Habitat ReStore On #EarthDay and every day, Habitat ReStore diverts waste from landfills through accepting, repurposing and reselling quality new and used household items and building materials. We all have the power to help build a prosperous, healthy future for our planet. With spring just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to think about refreshing your home! Spring is the season of creativity and rejuvenation. Find new and gently used patio furniture, materials for your next #DIYproject, and more at Habitat ReStore (at budget-friendly prices). It’s also a socially and environmentally conscious shopping experience. Habitat ReStores build the story of Home There is power in repurposing excess building materials, furniture and inventory – every donation can be a building block for a brighter future. When your business supports Habitat South Georgian Bay’s gift-in-kind program or donates products to our Habitat ReStore, you’re helping us build more homes for families in need of safe, decent and affordable housing. Additionally, your impact goes beyond building a house; you’ll be making a difference across our community. Insider tips for shopping, donating and volunteering at Habitat ReStore ReStores are great for communities. They provide a convenient place to donate your quality used and new household items and resell them to the public at discount prices, using the proceeds to help build Habitat for Humanity houses. For those of you who want to help out your community in this unique way, here are some tips… Shopping – Brad Lebeck, ReStore Manager, recommends people come at least once a week. However, he actually recommends a daily visit if you can fit it in. The reason? His store adds items to the sales floor daily. So you never know what treasure you’ll find… or miss out on. Shoppers can find great furniture and building materials, but there’s also a great selection of home décor and housewares. Much of what’s offered is new overstock items, but there’s also a wide selection of gently used items and even vintage offerings. One of the most helpful pieces of advice is to bring a camera – to get opinions right away. ReStore has a quick merchandise turnover, so get opinions quickly, secure the deal, or you may lose out. It’s also best to bring your required dimensions in your back pocket. Shoppers who leave the store to go home and measure often find that someone else snapped it up by the time they return. Donating – Donating your usable household items to a ReStore helps keep things out of landfills. But, before you donate, make sure your donation is a quality item with a second life. “If you need the item you are donating, would you buy it?” Brad advises. “ReStores have donation criteria – we don’t repair or restore things, so check the website or call to ask before you donate.”

Your stuff, builds homes. Donate your used furniture today!

ReInvest in new and used items after your spring cleaning and help support us in building more homes.

The ReStore often accepts more unusual items that can be used in their silent auction – another way to find a treasure for your home. Volunteering – ReStores are a great place to make new friends, help customers and volunteer with Habitat outside of a construction site. “If you love shopping, you’re probably going to love volunteering at the ReStore,” Brad says. There’s a volunteer registration form at www.habitatgeorgianbay.ca or call the ReStore directly to see what spots they have open. Spring home maintenance – inside and out With spring right around the corner, we're all looking to put those winter blues behind us and get our homes into tip-top shape. But, with spring weather being unpredictable, sometimes it’s hard to juggle work, life, interior and exterior maintenance. Get a head start on spring by checking the interior of your home while it’s still cold and snowy outside. Here are some of the ways you can be proactive about protecting your home and your health: • Check and reset ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) • Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors • Lubricate weatherstripping and sliding doors and windows • Check that windows and screens are operating properly • Check air ducts, remove covers and vacuum dust from vents • Clean humidifier and check for condensation and proper humidity levels • Check attic, basement and crawlspaces for leaks or moisture • Clean or replace your furnace filter • Check and clean the heat recovery ventilator (HRV); wash or replace the filter • Check sump pump (if installed) for discharge • Inspect water heater for leaks As winter starts to break, you may have more opportunities to check on areas outside the home. In the long run, maintaining the exterior of your home can be just as important as interior upkeep.

• Plan landscaping to avoid soil settlement and water ponding Remember to always work safely and do your research before taking on an unfamiliar task. Consider leaving some of the more dangerous tasks, such as checking for mould or roof inspections, to a licensed professional.

PET OF THE MONTH: BUDDY Buddy is 11-years-old, and he is about 25 lbs. He is a very sweet and affectionate boy. He may be a senior, but he still has lots of life in him. He enjoys tug of war, playing with his ball, and going for walks. While he is a lovely, kind dog, he does have hind end sensitively, which means he doesn’t always love body handling. Pain medication helps him to be the affectionate dog he truly is! Buddy is also in the “Special Paws” program. He needs a certain type of food and a specific feeding schedule to keep him in tip-top shape!

Fresh-baked, local and irresistible Not everyone has a clear vision of their future. And, it's fewer still who work to learn the skills and then turn their vision into a reality. But, if the last few years have shown us anything, it's that creative, hard-working people will find a way to reveal their passion to the rest of us, no matter the obstacles put in their path.

The

Baker’s Bench

The path was made clear for Amanda Sutton, owner of The Baker's Bench: waitressing, creating custom cakes for family and friends, followed by cooking under an inspiring chef at Cagney's Steakhouse and Winebar. The chef there inspired her to experiment with new flavours and textures she typically would have avoided, simply because everything he made was so delicious! Her next step was to attend George Brown College for Baking and Pastry Arts Management. All of which has led her to where she is today. Using social media, a cell phone, and the strength of her baking skills, Amanda has been selling her highly sought-after baked goods to those in the know for over two years. At farmer's markets and craft shows, and with the community's support, word of her baking talent spread far and wide.

Amazing treats and Amanda herself is wonderful! If you are near Wasaga it’s worth a stop!! Allison W.

Best butter tarts ever. Gail C. Like many successful women in business, Amanda's personality is guaranteed to increase her chances of success. Her passion, determination, optimism, and love of people have brought her to this place. She was inspired to learn strong theory-based skills and the power of improvisation from an encouraging mentor, who also reminded her that you never stop learning and playing and that sometimes we are more capable than what we initially think. The Baker's Bench is built on a vision of bringing her customers, neighbours and friends the best, fresh baking she can, without compromise. Just ask her many satisfied customers or better yet, read their glowing comments on Facebook and Instagram. Regulars at The Baker's Bench know to buy their favourites early because when they're gone, they're gone until Amanda bakes them again. That's truly made fresh. The Baker's Bench is Amanda's passion. Here, she creates fresh-baked, real ingredient custom cakes, scrumptious scones, bountiful butter tarts, celebrated chocolate chip cookies and more. Until recently, The Baker's Bench could be found in a shared kitchen at Tony B's Variety and Gift on River Road East. Though the last year has brought The Baker's Bench a slew of superfans and repeat customers, Amanda's future is about to get even brighter. This spring The Baker's Bench moves into a space of its own at the Stonebridge Town Centre, where Amanda has big plans for the future of her made-fresh baking and, finally, a commercial kitchen of her own. Work is currently underway on the new space, but Amanda and The Baker's Bench are spending the interim in a temporary kitchen until the new one is completed. For Amanda, it made sense to follow her dreams to Wasaga Beach, a place filled with fond childhood memories of family summer visits.

Very highlyrecommended. Try it, you won’t be disappointed. Susan D.

Make sure custom cakes and orders are made a few weeks ahead of time to ensure complete customer satisfaction. Why your RRSP isn't a retirement plan Simply contributing to an RRSP does not mean you have a plan for retirement. While your RRSP may represent a key source of your retirement income, it’s only a small piece of your overall financial picture. A true plan for retirement comes from looking at all aspects of your financial life and capturing this in a holistic financial plan. The reliability of a financial plan is only as accurate as the information that is used to create it. It is important to start by taking inventory. Create a simple net worth statement by listing what you own versus what you owe. Taking note of spending patterns can also be powerful. You may not be interested in building a budget, but it is important to know where your money is going and the type of cash flow that is required to fuel your lifestyle. This raw data can now be used to start building your financial plan. Working with a professional to develop a comprehensive financial plan can address all aspects of your financial affairs, including cash and debt management, education planning, tax and investment strategy, retirement income planning, risk management, as well as estate and legacy planning. Your RRSP is simply one piece of the larger puzzle.

A proper plan should provide an overview of your financial picture and how you are tracking to your short-term and long-term goals. It can also help answer some of the following questions: • Can I retire when I want and maintain my desired lifestyle?

• Can my portfolio sustain a market downturn? • What sources will my retirement income come from? • How can I ensure that I don’t outlive my money? • Is my investment mix appropriate for my risk tolerance? • What is my capacity for risk?

• How can I protect the value of my estate? • How can I minimize the taxes I pay each year? • If something were to happen to me unexpectedly, would my family be taken care of? The Order of Collingwood The Town of Collingwood celebrated its annual Mayor’s Levee and Order of Collingwood Awards Ceremony on February 27th at Georgian Bay Hotel. The Order of Collingwood was established in 1983; throughout the years, the criteria has taken on many forms but has always focused on recognizing exemplary volunteerism within the community. In 2003, the Companion of the Order was established to further recognize the volunteerism of previous recipients who continue to go above and beyond in their volunteer service to the community. Town Crier Ken Templeman announced the proclamation, and Duty Piper Reed Guzwell piped in the recipients and councillors. In addition, Rev. Brian Goodings from Faith Community and Grey Cloud-James Carpenter from the local Indigenous Community offered spiritual blessings. Finally, Mayor Brian Saunderson and each councillor presented the Order of Collingwood Awards to recipients: Tim Cook, Su Cook, Christine Macfarlane, Ivy Martin and Margaret Mooy. Companion of the Order was awarded to Norman Joseph Wingrove. PHOTOS | STORY: BRYAN DAVIES PHOTOGRAPHY. See more photos on www.georgianlife.ca

BUSINESS PROFILE:

Nancy Griffin’s LIVE YOUR LIFE: AS COURAGEOUS, FEARLESS, RESPECTFUL, CARING & SHARING WOMEN LEADERS April is the month of new beginnings – rebirth and renewal. We have all been through so much over the last two years with the effects and impact of Covid. And more recently, we are seeing the incredibly shocking and devasting trauma to so many from watching a Russian madman invade Ukraine. We are concerned for what in the world is going on for our future, when we see such determined evil and cruelty. More Women leaders in this world is a must!

UPCOMING “WOMEN, WORTH & WELLNESS®” EVENTS:

Women, Worth & Wellness, is a brand I created in 1994 to champion women’s self-actualization, defined by “a person’s desire to use all their abilities to achieve and be everything they possibly can be.” To be the best we can be and maximize our potential, individual impact, and leadership for goodness in this world, we must be healthy in our bodies and our mind. Mind, Body & Spirit forms the essence of our personal uniqueness and impact. Women often take a back seat and place their own needs second to everything/ everyone else’s: their family, their spouse, their career, their business. Women, Worth & Wellness seeks to inspire and inform women, at every age and stage, on enhancing their personal wellness and independent economic power so that their strength becomes impactful leadership. It is a circular mission of being healthy first, then confident, fearless and courageous, doing well professionally whatever your role is at home or work, and sharing your unique offering in an inclusive way that enhances families, communities and the world through your personal leadership. Women’s Personal Leadership Everywhere Makes a HUGE Difference – Locally and Globally! This year for IWD2022, for the #breakthebias theme, we featured Frances Wright and The Famous Five (www.famous5.ca), five Albertan women drawn together by the tides of history and a shared idealism, almost 100 years ago! These five women were champions of the rights and welfare of women and children. Each was a true leader in her own right, and they did all this before they were even fully defined as persons under Canadian and British law. Together they formed an unstoppable force that changed the world for women in Canada and all Commonwealth countries. The Famous Five Foundation’s mandate is “to empower women and girls to courageously lead change that contributes to a society without boundaries for women.” We also hosted an in-person event at Craigleith Ski Club to hear Erin Latimer’s #breakthebias for IWD22 as a Paralympian. She told her incredibly inspiring story of being a two-time Paralympian in the sport of para alpine skiing. Erin’s four years on the Canadian Para Alpine Ski Team garnered her six World Cup medals and top-10 finishes at two Winter Paralympic Games (Sochi 2014 and PyeongChang 2018). Erin’s personal leadership took her to the top, literally!

ADULT ADHD There has been an uptick in the number of adults seeking clarification for their attentional problems, especially since the pandemic. Whereas children and adolescents are typically diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD, which used to be known as ADD), few adults seek an evaluation of ADHD due to stigma or other reasons (e.g., they excuse attentional difficulties to being “lazy”). Years ago, there was a widely held belief that ADHD is outgrown by the end of adolescence and at the beginning of adulthood; however, there is a growing awareness of the problems that ADHD causes adults in their occupation, home life, and relationships. ADHD Symptoms Adults who experience ADHD have trouble focusing, listening, paying close attention to details, being on time, sitting still, and staying organized despite trying. These symptoms result in difficulties dealing with responsibilities such as paying bills, performing on the job (or keeping jobs), parenting, and day-to-day tasks. Adults with undiagnosed ADHD may have recurring mishaps or minor accidents. They are more likely to abuse substances, have job or relationship instability, and overall poorer quality of life.

ASSESSMENTS Adult ADHD Learning Problems Anxiety, Depression, Trauma

ADHD is hereditary A person's chance of having ADHD is 75-90% if a close family member has it. ADHD is associated with poor executive functioning, which is seen as poor planning and difficulty starting and finishing tasks (having too many unfinished projects). Aspects of memory and processing of information are impaired in individuals with ADHD who report being forgetful, absentminded, and ineffective problem-solvers. These issues often lead someone with ADHD to feel easily frustrated, fatigued, and moody. Positive Light to ADHD For some people having ADHD is not all negative. One positive aspect of ADHD is the ability to “hyperfocus,” where intense and highly focused attention is directed to subjects or activities of interest such as reading, hobbies, school, or work. Many people with ADHD are social magnets as they are highly energetic, talkative, and always “on the go.” People with ADHD may enjoy careers where these traits are desirable, such as in sales, business, or the entertainment industry. Diagnosis is key Too often, many people have undetected ADHD. Diagnosis is critical for receiving the right treatment. ADHD symptoms can appear to be similar to issues caused by anxiety, mood, or sleep problems. In fact, a study found that 75% of people with ADHD have an additional mental disorder that can mask ADHD symptoms. An accurate diagnosis could lead to receiving the right medications, which is the primary treatment for ADHD. Behavioral or psychological interventions for ADHD may be used as a standalone treatment but psychotherapy is more typically used in combination with medications. A comprehensive evaluation of ADHD conducted by a clinical psychologist, or a psychiatrist can help individuals with ADHD receive the appropriate treatment for more productive and meaningful lives.

Ukraine to Collingwood - local families open their doors The world was brought to a standstill as news broke that Russia had invaded Ukraine. The Russian attacks are horrific atrocities and have caused immense suffering, fear, and heartbreak. The situation in Ukraine is actively evolving, as are the needs of citizens in the country and neighbouring regions. There is a lot of misinformation circulating about what is going on in Ukraine. Misleading images and videos and false news stories have surfaced online. We urge you to rely only on credible, fact-checked sources to stay informed.

Sara is the owner of Press Market in Collingwood and has offered both Oksana and Hanna a job there - they will use Google translate and label everything in English and Ukrainian. We will certainly follow up for an update in the next issue of Georgian Life. A gofundme account has been set up if you would like to make a monetary contribution. The goal is $15,000 to be dispursed on accommodation in Vienna, airfare and transportation, food while travelling, clothing, bathroom essentials, phone SIM cards, English classes, etc. If the goal is surpassed and you still want to donate a savings account will be opened for future use like housing, transportation, and anything they need in the coming months.

Many of us feel helpless and don't know what to do, locally or globally. The situation is bound to be Europe's largest refugee crisis this century. Two local women Sara Johnston and her friend Brie Buchanan-Cordell are bringing two young Ukrainian ladies, best friends Oksana and Hanna, from the city of Zaporizhzhia to their homes, and they need your help. What to expect at a hearing aid fitting Prior to the hearing aid fitting appointment, the Audiologist and patient will have already discussed and decided on a hearing aid. In addition, the Audiologist will have taken measurements and/or ear impressions if required. The hearing aid fitting appointment will take between 60 and 90 minutes. The Audiologist will start by assessing the fit of the hearing aid. Some hearing aids require custom-made earmolds or a specific size tip, tubing, etc. It is essential that the fit is comfortable and that the appropriate size of tubing and tips are used - this will impact how well the hearing aid functions. Next, the Audiologist will program the hearing aid settings. Each hearing aid is customized to the person’s hearing loss. The hearing aid is connected to the clinician’s computer and adjusted through specific software from the manufacturer. The amount of ‘gain’ or volume is adjusted by frequency. For example, someone who has difficulty hearing high-frequency sounds, such as consonants of speech like the /s/ or the /th/, will have these areas turned up. The hearing aid will amplify those specific frequencies, and other frequencies that the person cannot hear well in order to improve their hearing. The hearing aids are then tested and verified for accuracy. Real Ear Measurements (REMs) are the gold standard for fitting and verifying hearing aids. First, the person’s hearing results are entered into a machine. Then a probe microphone is placed in the ear canal along with the hearing aid. This microphone will measure the output of the hearing aid while taking the individual and unique shape of the person’s ear canal (which is the ‘real ear’). The ear canal will have an affect on the sound, so it is important that these measurements are taken to ensure a proper fit. Lastly, the Audiologist will discuss what you should expect from your hearing aids. They will also show you how to clean them, how to insert and remove the hearing aids and how to change the batteries or recharge the hearing aids. If the person is uncomfortable with the hearing aids or unsure how to operate them, they will be less likely to wear them. A good relationship with your Audiologist is important as they are integral to your hearing care.

Craigleith Heritage Depot receives the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award The Craigleith Heritage Depot, a Branch of The Blue Mountains Public Library, is pleased to announce that the Craigleith Heritage Depot has been awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for Community Leadership. A formal awards ceremony and reception was held virtually on February 24, 2022. Established in 2007, the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Awards are annual juried awards administered by the Ontario Heritage Trust to recognize remarkable achievements in heritage conservation. These inspirational achievements signal the important role that heritage conservation plays in Ontario’s communities. The award ceremony took place virtually as part of the Trust’s annual Heritage Week celebrations. The prestigious award for Community Leadership was granted in recognition of the REEL History Film Series that the Craigleith Heritage Depot has created with the assistance of community members and the production team at Mountain Goat Film Company. Funded through local support, these films have provided a space for remarkable stories to be told through community voices.

Mayor Alar Soever responded to the news of this award, saying: “I am extremely proud of what our small-town, Craigleith Heritage Depot has accomplished in the conservation of our history, and I congratulate you and all who contributed to this effort on receiving this prestigious award.” “The REEL History film series has provided aesthetic, cultural and social significance and interconnections to our history.” says Andrea Wilson Curator, “These short documentaries have brought attention to the value in stewardship of community heritage collections, ensuring the stories objects tell continue to resonate for generations.” Providing these films through in-person events, online platforms, online events, local websites, community partner agencies and film festivals throughout the world has brought recognition and understanding of our natural and cultural heritage. As a result, the Craigleith Heritage Depot has a following now across the globe, looking to connect, discover and explore the local history of our Blue Mountains community.

Inspiring and encouraging young artists Magic of Children in The Arts continues to inspire and encourage young artists in our region. It is very difficult to find someone who grew up in the Southern Georgian Bay region who did not take an art class through Magic of Children in the Arts sometime in their childhood. Since its inception in 1995, ‘Magic’ has been delivering Saturday workshops and in-school workshops throughout the region to thousands of children.

And, the best part… all of these classes culminate in what many say is the world's largest art show for children. Pre-COVID, the annual Magic Art Show at the Public Library in Collingwood showcased just over 1200 prices of art – each from a different child! Many will say that the Magic Art Show takes a lot of effort to set-up but when you see the look in a child's eyes when they see their art on the wall, you realize it is worth all of the effort and time. In the 2021/22 school year, Magic will have delivered free, fully funded, art classes to all grade three and six classes in the region. This means that this year alone, just over 800 children will be treated to a special art class delivered by a professional artist through Magic. Saturday workshops have been held at space donated by the Collingwood Youth Center – delivering fun and inspiring art classes to kids ranging from 4 to 12 years. Oil painting, rug hooking, sketching and driftwood art classes have been enjoyed by 20 children each Saturday – and all free!

Shop • Eat • Play • Listen

Magic is a registered charitable organization always looking for donations, event sponsorship, and most importantly… volunteers and Board members! If you have a passion for children and art, and some time on your hands, Magic would love to hear from you.

The open road beckons millions of motorists upon the arrival of warm weather. In advance of the season’s first road trip, drivers tune up their engines and plan their itineraries for the adventures that lie ahead. While it may be tempting to get behind the wheel and see where the road takes you, those who have been around the block - or highway - a few times likely know that road trip planning involves careful packing for the voyage ahead. Bringing the right items along can go a long way toward ensuring a trip is enjoyable and runs smoothly. This list of must-haves can get anyone started on the road trip ahead. • Proper paperwork: Don’t forget to bring a driver’s licence, vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and your rental car agreement if you are renting a car. You may need proof of COVID-19 vaccination and/ or a negative COVID test in certain instances. Double-check that you have it all before leaving. • Vehicle manual: Even the most well-maintained car may suffer a breakdown on the road. Bring along the vehicle manual, which can help you diagnose minor problems. Keep your roadside assistance membership card at the ready if you need extra help. • Important phone numbers: Bring a written list of important phone numbers in case your phone dies or gets lost. • Cash: Credit and debit cards are a reliable form of payment, but cash is king. Having cash on hand is a smart move in the event bank cards get lost. Cash is especially useful when patronizing smaller establishments that might not take credit.

• GPS and maps: GPS systems on phones and other devices provide step-by-step directions and can alert to traffic jams. But GPS can be compromised in areas where mountain ranges or buildings interrupt cellular or satellite service. The Maps.Me app enables you to download detailed maps that can be accessed while offline. Paper maps can serve as backups as well. • Entertainment: Long road trips are full of opportunities to visit roadside attractions. When the highway is a long stretch of nothing new, bring along movies, music, books, handheld games, and even trivia or mind puzzles to pass the time. • Cooler with refreshments: Dining out is a great way to sample local cuisine from various regions of the country. But having snacks at the ready can save time and money. The list of road trip essentials continues, but this is a good start. The list can be customized based on drivers’ interests and their destinations.

Distracted driving is a significant safety issue. Drivers and passengers CB/CB 2020 9:14 AM are killed mars in 10,crashes attributed to distracted driving every day. Transport Canada's National Collision Database says PS17629 distracted driving prevalence rose from 16 percent of fatal collisions in 2006 to 21 percent in 2016, and those numbers are still climbing.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, distractions constitute a significant safety threat. For example, eating, talking with passengers, adjusting vehicle controls, and using a mobile phone while behind the wheel take drivers' attention away from the road.

Make adjustments before setting off Make adjustments to mirrors, radio stations and seat settings prior to driving. In addition, drivers who intend to utilize a GPS navigation system should enter the address and look ahead at the course before getting on the road. Keep smartphones out of sight Reducing the urge to check a phone alert or send a text may come down to out of sight, out of mind. Silence the phone and store it in the glove compartment, center console or a purse in the back seat. The phone should not be handled until the destination is reached or if the vehicle is pulled over safely out of traffic. Smartphones have settings that can be programmed to send automatic notifications to people contacting the phone owner to say they're driving or temporarily unavailable.

Use hands-free devices in emergencies Many cars come equipped with Bluetooth or other hands-free technology that enables a distress call to be made without taking hands off the wheel. In addition, many are voice-activated or can be engaged with the push of a button. Limit passengers A vehicle full of passengers can be very distracting. It's why many areas no longer allow newly-minted teenage drivers to transport more than a few passengers until they're older and more experienced. Limiting passengers, even for experienced adults, can also help reduce distractions.

Otta became a Sommelier 16 years ago and has been an important piece in the Canadian wine industry. The wine list is extensive, ask for assistance from your chef, and he will find the perfect pairing for your mood and meal. There is no doubt why his patrons come and pick his brain about local and international wines, drive far to enjoy his wine tasting dinners or order their favourite and hard-to-find wines by the case. At La Cucina, you can enjoy every season on their sun-filled patio, winterized for a Fondue experience in the cold months, seasonal winemakers dinners, wine pairing dinner series and kids cooking classes. In addition, they offer a chef's table dinner either in the restaurant or in the comfort of your home, where the chef personally creates a multiple-course tasting menu with wine pairings. The newest addition is "Crudo Raw Bar," where you can sit and chat with Otta while sampling fresh oysters, raw cuts of fish and charcuterie. The menu changes frequently, but some favourite dishes are always available, such as Purple Brussel Sprouts, Spaghetti Carbonara, fresh Burrata Cheese and house-made Caesar Salad. In the summer months, pizzas with unique flavours satisfy the biggest pizza connoisseurs. Desserts are made in-house by their talented pastry chef, including Otta's favourite - gluten-free Torta Caprese.

BUSINESS PROFILE:

Love your kitchen again EcoRefinishers has been a family-owned and operated business for over 16 years specializing in professionally refinished cabinetry. Using a waterbased lacquer, coupled with trained skills, they can bring your kitchen back to life with a lasting and attractive finish. In addition, their professional spray system and products give long-lasting, gorgeous quality to your kitchen cabinets while ensuring an eco-friendly environment for you and your family. Their process is simple. In one day, the crew will diligently mask your kitchen to protect against overspray; then they will sand, prime and spray everything that cannot be removed, such as the outer boxes and crown. Next, the doors and drawer faces are labelled, catalogued, removed and transported to the finishing facility. Once the doors have been thoroughly cleaned, sanded and painted, they undergo a 2-3 day curing process to ensure complete adhesion of product for future durability. Finally, when the doors are ready, the service team transports them back to your home to complete the installation. And voilà - it is complete, and you have a glorious “new” kitchen to enjoy!

We treat you as one of our own. Integrity, honesty, and hard work are all ideals we take to heart. We show up on time, finish when we say we will, and leave your home as clean as it was before we started. To the best of our ability, we strive to complete all our clients’ kitchens in just ten business days. This way, you are never without your kitchen doors for very long – and once the crew is done on the first day, you can go back to using your kitchen as you were before. Testimonies from previous clients can be verified through HomeStars – where we have won their “Best Of” award for three consecutive years!

EcoRefinishers offers a three-year warranty on kitchen refinishing, and they are always happy to help with colour or hardware choices and any other advice. Unfortunately, once in a while, there are kitchens that just cannot be refinished – and they will let you know that. If you are planning any other renovations, such as replacing your countertops, backsplash or sink, it is recommended that you complete these first. Wall painting and other aesthetic touches should be completed after the cabinets have been refinished. Refinish your kitchen cabinets with EcoRefinishers, and they will do their best to give you the kitchen you’ve been waiting for while minimizing waste, hassle and expenditure for you. Love your kitchen again!
