Golf for kids

Marlwood Golf and Country Club in Wasaga Beach hosted the Sonny Larose - Jim Cooke Golf Fore Kids Golf Tournament on September 1st. With tournament partner Canadian Tire Wasaga Beach in support of Jumpstart, 160 golfers enjoyed a shotgun start and best ball golf game for a fun-filled day. 100% of all proceeds will go to Jumpstart, with most funds matched by Canadian Tire to help young people participate in the Wasaga Beach sports. Golf Fore Kids is an excellent example of how Wasaga Beach residents and businesses collaborated to contribute $50,000 to The Jumpstart Program.

A letter from the publisher

With a somewhat heavy heart, I must tell you, the October 2022 issue of Georgian Life will be the final one. This decision was certainly not easy, but it is time for me to move on and pursue other opportunities.

When I bought Georgian Life Media Inc. eleven years ago, I did so, hoping it would become a thriving and successful business. And, while it has undoubtedly gone through its ups and downs over the years, I still believe that it has the potential to be something really special. I'm confident this will be a wise choice and that Georgian Life Media Inc. will ultimately flourish.

The publication has always been a labour of love, but the media landscape is constantly changing, and with technology becoming more sophisticated every day, there are endless possibilities for what the company can become.

I am excited to see what the next eleven years bring (I just need some time to figure it out). The festive season is right around the corner, so we will be busy with photo booths. Georgian Life will still be active on our social media channels, so if you haven't liked us or followed us yet, please do so.

I want to extend my sincerest thanks to the team; it has been a privilege to work with such talented people; our contributors who have made each and every issue of Georgian Life interesting and informative, our readers who picked it up every month, and our advertisers, who have been so loyal over the years. We could not have done it without you. I hope the publication has left a lasting positive impact; enjoy flipping through the pages of our final print issue and remembering all the good times we had together. Thank you for everything - see you out there!

The relationship that may be your best investment

What is the value of an advisor? Clients seek out an investment advisor relationship for many tangible reasons. They look for guidance in investment strategy, active rebalancing of investment portfolios, a customized financial plan and road map, insurancebased wealth preservation, tax-efficient planning strategies, and guidance through the financial complexities of life. While these are all core offerings, there is one area of value that is often overlooked. Behavioural mistakes cost real money. When it comes to delivering value, behavioural coaching may be one of the most significant contributors to the overall value in working with an advisor. The past few years have been a time of significant change. The headlines have been relentless. A global pandemic, rising interest rates, soaring inflation, supplychain disruption, a war in Ukraine, risk of recession… the list goes on. While there is plenty weighing on investors’ minds these days, the truth is, there has always been something that could present a threat to financial markets. Advisors can offer significant value to their clients simply by keeping them from making knee-jerk reactions to sensationalized news headlines and increased market volatility.

One of the most important roles an advisor plays is that of behaviour coach, helping their clients avoid making decisions based on their emotional reaction to the market’s ups and downs. This highlights the importance of working with someone you trust. The client-advisor relationship should be one built on trust, honest connection and deep understanding. When this type of partnership is established; a relationship with an advisor may truly be your best investment.

It's Turkey Time Again

How do you solve a problem like Kyle Dubas? He is gentle, he is wild!

He's a darling, he's a demon, he's a lamb!

He's a riddle, he's a child!

He's a headache, he's an angel!

(From the Toronto Maple Leafs' version of  "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?")

These are difficult days. We hope for the best but fear the worst. We see a light at the end of the tunnel but suspect it may be an oncoming train.

The skies are clear now (fall of 2022), but are those storm clouds ahead (spring of 2023)?

Yes, Leaf's fans, the stress of another hockey season is upon us. Every spring, my brother John refuses to watch Game 7 and, after the loss declares his allegiance to a new team. It was the Jets one year, the Panthers the next.  We've stopped paying attention.

And, of course, by the time the fall rolls around, he's fully up to speed on every Leafs' social media blog and the battle for the final spot on the 4th line.

It's been said that in the interest of maintaining family harmony, two topics to be avoided at Thanksgiving meals are religion and politics. Let's add "what do you think we should do with Kyle Dubas?" to the list.

POV A. When he took over as GM of the Leafs in May 2018, he was gifted with an abundance of young talent (Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Kadri, Reilly and Anderson). The Leafs haven't won a playoff round since then, and now we're heading into this season with two goalies that their previous teams no longer wanted. Pass the potatoes.

POV B. The Leafs have been a great regular season team during the Dubas Era, and it's only been a combination of bad luck and strong opponents that has prevented playoff success. Is there any more stuffing?

A. His handling of the contracts has been criminal. He was held hostage by Nylander and ended up overpaying. Unnecessarily way overpaid Marner. Only got Matthews to commit to a five-year term, compared to McDavid's eight years, and now we run the risk of losing Matthews soon. We need more wine.

B. He's managed to keep the core group under contract and hasn't given out any long or awful contracts to poor players. Is that wine coming soon?

A. He's made some good trades and some bad trades. He's made some decent free agent signings and some awful ones. He really hasn't drafted any good young players and there aren't any great young prospects coming up in the system. Sure, I'll have some ice cream with the pumpkin pie.

B. He runs a professional organization. The players and the media like him and he is well respected by his peers. Honey, it's getting late, let's skip dessert and get going.

A. Other teams fire GM's and coaches after one or two poor playoff performances. How have Shanahan and Dubas kept their jobs this long? And by the way, what does Shanahan do all day anyway?  Kids, get your jackets; we're leaving.

B. We are consistently a top ten team in the league, and we finally have strong organizational leadership and consistency. Where did I put my car keys?

A. I don't trust him to make any shrewd trades or to handle the upcoming contract renewal negotiations properly. He's got to be fired. Ok, we'll stay the night and have another cigar and drink outside with Grandpa. Kids, take your jackets off.

B. We're in great hands. This will be our year.  You know what, we'll stay the night as well. I brought the old VHS tape of the highlights from the' 92-93 season. And, I'll have another drink as well to toast Dougie.

A.  Dougie? You mean Wendel, of course. Dougie was great, but there was no player like Wendel…

September 1st was the start date for the month-long Red Shoe Walk campaign supporting My Friend's House. Supporters gathered for the launch at Collingwood Town Hall to hear inspiring messages and impassioned pleas for support from Mayor Hull, My Friend's House Executive Director Alison FitzGerald and others. This year's goal of 150 participants and $85,000 is achievable, but only with the help and support of the community. "You can participate from anywhere, at any time throughout the month of September. If you haven't had a chance to register, do it now, but most of all, we hope you will help us to end violence against women and donate today! Blackened Salmon Fillets –

Fire up Fish with a Blend of Cajun-Style Spices!

This blackened salmon recipe is deceptively easy to make and gourmet enough for company. Serve pan-seared fillets over salad greens or pair with steamed vegetables and roasted potatoes for a fast, healthy and exceptionally flavourful meal.

INGREDIENTS

☐ 1 teaspoon (5 ml) ground cumin

☐ ¼ teaspoon (1.25 ml) cayenne pepper, optional

☐ 1 teaspoon (5 ml) brown sugar

☐ 1 teaspoon (5 ml) onion powder

☐ 1 teaspoon (5 ml) garlic powder

☐ 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) dried oregano

☐ 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) dried thyme

☐ 1 tablespoon (15 ml) paprika

☐ 1 1/2 teaspoon (7.5 ml) chili powder

☐ 1 teaspoon (5 ml) ground black pepper

☐ ½ teaspoon (2.5 ml) salt

☐ 4 salmon fillets about 6 ounces (170 g) each

☐ 1-2 tablespoons (15-30 ml) butter or olive oil to coat the salmon

☐ 1-2 tablespoons (15-30 ml) butter or olive oil, for pan-frying

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Brush the salmon fillets with butter or oil.

2. Combine all the spices and sprinkle generously over the salmon fillets.

3. In a large non-stick skillet or cast-iron pan, heat more butter or olive oil over medium heat. Add the seasoned salmon fillets and cook, depending on the thickness, for 4 to 7 minutes on each side until the fish flakes easily with a fork.

ENJOY!

Did You Know?

Salmon is a wonderful source of heart and brain protective omega-3 fatty acids and high-quality protein. Health Canada recommends that adults consume fish at least twice per week as part of a healthy diet. Originating in New Orleans, food that is blackened isn't actually burnt. Instead, the very dark brown colour is due to the special spice blend coating the food.

Memories of summer

On September 4th, visitors celebrated summer one last time this year at Beach Area One for the Town of Wasaga Beach's annual Memories of Summer festival. Live family entertainment by Bumbling Bert's Comedy Magic Show featured dazzling magic and loads of audience participation. There were games for all ages and live music featuring headliners, My Son the Hurricane. This band had an infectious beat with trumpets, saxophones, trombones, drums, guitar, percussion, inspiring their audience to dance. The Honeyrunners, a Northern take on Southern Roots and Americana, rocked on, while a musical fundraiser for Hospice Georgian Triangle was happening at Bananas Beach Bar with twelve local musicians organized by David Grossman. The evening ended with a bang with fireworks lighting up the sky.

FOOD INSECURITY IN CANADA

In Canada, household food insecurity has been measured by Statistics Canada using the Household Food Security Survey Module (HFSSM) on the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS). This survey consists of 18 questions about the food security status of the household over the previous year, and focuses on the self reports of uncertain, insufficient, or inadequate food access due to limited financial resources, and the impact that this had on the household’s eating patterns. The experiences reported by the households are then categorized under three categories:

• Food Secure: Household experienced either ‘no indication’ or ‘one indication’ of difficulty in accessing their preferred quantity and quality of food, due to income.

• Moderate Food Insecurity: Household had to compromise the quality or quantity of their food choices, due to insufficient income.

• Severe Food Insecurity: Household had disrupted eating patterns, due to insufficient income. This may have included eating less than needed, skipping meals, or going one or more days without food.

Over 3.2 million people visited a food bank in Ontario last year.

In this season of thankfulness, we can sometimes forget that there are many families and people in our communities who are struggling to make ends meet. Yet, every 10 seconds, someone visits a food bank in Ontario, representing the 537,000 adults, children and seniors who access food banks more than 3 million times each year.

When we look more closely at the numbers, we begin to see a clearer picture of who these individuals and families are. Children remain one of the largest individual groups of food bank users, with 1 in 3 being a child under 18 years of age.

While a number of investments have been made by both the provincial and federal governments in reducing child poverty in Canada, children still remain disproportionately at risk of hunger. This is particularly troubling given how essential proper nutrition is to a child’s cognitive development, physical health, and overall well-being.

Another growing demographic is single-person households, which now represent more than half the households that visit food banks. Part of the challenge faced by single-person households is that there is only one income to cover all monthly expenses. With skyrocketing rental and housing rates, and without the flexibility provided by an

additional income source, it is increasingly more difficult for a single person to adjust to unexpected changes or expenses, while living on a tight budget.

There are a number of reasons as to why someone might need to visit a food bank. It may be the result of a large employer closing in the area, a recent job loss, an ongoing illness or disability, or even a local natural disaster that has created a number of unexpected expenses. Luckily, food banks are there to help individuals and families get back on their feet, no matter the circumstances that led to them walking through the doors.

From nutritious food to meal programs, community gardens to referral services, and holiday hampers to children and seniors’ programs, food banks help their communities to not only survive, but once again thrive.

There are a number of ways you can help support your local food bank. Through food donations (both fresh and nonperishable) or volunteering, you can make an incredible difference for families in need in your community.

Contact your local food bank to learn more about the volunteer opportunities in your community and their most needed food items.

You can also support local food banks this Thanksgiving by donating to Feed Ontario. All funds raised will support the equitable distribution of food across the province to communities that need it most, as well as investments in community programs and food bank capacity. Every $1 you give will provide the equivalent of 3 meals to someone facing hunger.

From securing fresh and healthy food sources, to driving change through policy research and innovative programming, Feed Ontario unites food banks, industry partners, and local communities in our work to end hunger and poverty.

This Thanksgiving, as many of us sit down to a full table of roast turkey, fluffy mashed potato, and delicious pumpkin pie, 537,000 of our neighbours will seek help to put even the most basic of meals on their own table.

Food banks across the province will be waiting with open arms to help ensure every adult and child can experience a meal to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, and beyond. But they can’t do it alone.

The Meaford & St. Vincent Agricultural Society Fall Fair is a longstanding tradition in the area, and this year's 165th edition did not disappoint. There was something for everyone to enjoy, from antique tractors and cars to inflatable bouncy castles and kids activity centres. Of course, no Fall Fair would be complete without a photobooth - and we were happy to be there with the Georgian Life PHOTOBOOTH to capture all the memories! Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecological malignancy worldwide due to a lack of effective screening, vague early symptoms, and an absence of effective treatment regimes. Consequently, ongoing research is directed at finding new treatments that permit improved prognosis for women challenged by ovarian cancer. With outdated therapeutic strategies still employed, the need for new treatment regimes is underscored by the estimated 3,100 Canadian women diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year.

Committed to an unparalleled drive to advance research in ovarian cancer, Dr. Alicia Tone Virtanen from Collingwood has dedicated her professional and personal endeavours to champion efforts to improve the health and well-being of women with ovarian cancer. On September 10, Alicia embarked on a daunting 31-km run along the Bruce Trail to raise money in support of Ovarian Cancer Canada.  Alicia was born and raised in Collingwood. She left at age 19 for university. Alicia earned a Ph.D. at the University of Toronto and obtained valuable postdoctoral training from the University of British Columbia. Following her postdoc, Alicia returned to Toronto and spent seven years in academic research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre to better understand the biology and genetics of ovarian cancer.

Currently, Alicia is a scientific advisor at Ovarian Cancer Canada. Ovarian Cancer Canada is the only registered Canadian charity solely dedicated to overcoming ovarian cancer, providing leadership in research, advocacy, and support so that women live fuller, better, and longer lives. Alicia says, “I’m still in research since joining Ovarian Cancer Canada, but in a different way.” Alicia manages a $14M research program working with scientists, clinicians, and council members to fund competitions, manage partnerships, and co-lead the patient partners in the research program. As scientific advisor, Alicia contributes to internal research, such as a recent national survey called ‘Every Woman Study’ involving more than 500 patients. “I really like this model better because I feel like it allows me to make a bigger, more tangible impact on patients lives than when I was in a lab.”

Alicia returned to Collingwood four years ago to be closer to family and have a more active outdoor lifestyle. Although her career is dedicated to advancing the fight against cancer, in her personal life, Alicia enjoys pushing herself to expand her boundaries. In 2019, Alicia unexpectedly fell in love with running, giving her the courage to leave the high-stress environment of academia and begin her new career with Ovarian Cancer Canada.

“When I come up with a challenge for myself, I like to add something to it, just to make it bigger or more meaningful for me,” she said. Alicia coupled her desire to excel at long distance running with a fundraiser for ovarian cancer, which provided the motivation she needed to push her limits. “Every day, I have the privilege of working alongside scientists, oncologists, patient partners and colleagues who go the extra kilometers to improve the lives of women living with and at risk for ovarian cancer; I pledge to do the same.”

Alicia’s running and fundraising endeavours began in the spring of 2020, when she completed a solo-effort half marathon with her husband, Carl, and a few close friends cheering her on. Alicia raised $1,800 for ovarian cancer at that event. Taking her running to the next level, in the fall of 2021, Alicia completed a 50 km in 50 hours campaign. The event involved running 5 km starting every 5 hours until reaching the milestone of 50 km total. “The challenge started at 12 pm on Friday, September 24, and concluded at 9 am two days later. By the end, I was exhausted, exhilarated and touched by the overwhelming support and generosity from both friends and strangers.” Alicia raised an amazing $3,900 for the cause.

Fast forward to 2022; on September 10, Alicia ran 31 km across the Bruce trail, the distance chosen to coordinate with the 3,100 Canadian women diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year. The event was called ‘Run for Her’ and began at Loree Forest south of Thornbury, continued across the top of Blue Mountain, through a big loop at the Pretty River, and concluded at the 3-stage trail. Alicia’s friends and family were there to encourage her at every leg of the run. “I once heard an ultra-runner say, ‘suffering is a gift,’ so I am excited to choose to suffer. On purpose,” she said. “The fact that I can choose to suffer to do something good for them, that’s what drives me.”

Alicia’s goal was to raise $5,000 at this year’s event. She exceeded 100% of her goal and raised an astounding $12,000 for Ovarian Cancer Canada. “Its pretty cool that ‘Run for Her’ has gained so much momentum thanks to all the support from the community! I am so proud that I dug deep and kept going to the very end. Next time - keep cool, keep hydrated, and salt, salt, salt!”

After a 2-year absence, the return of the annual Collingwood Shipyard Social (now in its sixth year) was a welcome opportunity to once again honour and celebrate the men and women of the Collingwood Shipyards. A beautiful Saturday afternoon saw many former employees and many families and community members gather to reminisce and enjoy a celebration of our town's shipbuilding heritage. New to this year's event was the "Hardhats on Hurontario" march from Town Hall to the Collingwood Museum, an idea of a former shipbuilder, Barry Underdown.

FALL

THESE LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN HELP YOU WITH YOUR DRIVING NEEDS

How drivers can handle suddenly unsafe driving conditions

The chance to take in idyllic landscapes and sun-soaked views is a big part of what makes road trips so appealing.

When travelling during certain times of the year, such as spring and fall, seasonal landscapes dotted with vivid colours can be incredibly stunning.

Travellers can’t be blamed for getting caught up in the sights they’re on the cusp of seeing.

But it’s equally important that drivers take steps to prepare for unsafe driving conditions before embarking on a road trip. Even if the forecast is nothing but sunny skies, driving conditions can suddenly take a turn for the worse. The following are a handful of unsafe conditions drivers may encounter on the road and what they can do to make it through such situations safe and sound.

• Aggressive drivers: Aggressive driving or road rage is a significant issue, more so than some drivers may recognize. A 2016 survey from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that nearly 80 percent of drivers expressed significant anger, aggression or road rage behind the wheel at least once in the previous 12 months. Motorists who encounter aggressive drivers should do their best to stay away from them. Consider safely changing lanes, gradually slowing down or even exiting the highway.

• Bad weather: Bad weather can include anything from snowfall to driving rain to thick fog. Though it’s wise for drivers to consult the weather forecast before hitting the road, no forecast is 100 percent accurate, which underscores

the importance of knowing what to do when conditions suddenly take a turn for the worse. If inclement weather appears unexpectedly, slow down and be sure to leave extra room between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. Double the cushion between your vehicle and the ones in front of you when driving in rain, snow, sleet, and other adverse weather conditions. Doing so can help to offset the slower brake time that occurs when driving in bad weather.

• Debris: Road debris can include anything from materials that get blown away from roadside worksites to falling rock to tire treads to items that fall off of other vehicles. The suddenness of and the potentially serious consequences of being hit by or hitting debris is why a proactive approach is ideal. Avoid tailgating, so you have ample room to maneuver should anything fall into the road. It’s also important to leave room on the side of your vehicle so you can swerve out of the way. On especially long road trips, share driving duties so whoever is behind the wheel is fresh and alert. Alertness improves reaction time, making it much more likely drivers can avoid debris.

The open road has its hazards. But drivers who plan ahead and know what to do when encountering adverse conditions can ensure road trips are memorable for all the right reasons.

Tips before buying new tires

A flat tire or a tire rotation recommendation

during a routine oil change appointment may be the only time many drivers give much thought to their tires. That, no doubt, leads to some confusion about what to do when tires inevitably need to be replaced.

Technically, a driver is rolling on worn tires the minute they leave the tire shop. However, the change to a completely worn tire is gradual, sometimes taking years depending a person's driving habits.

The life expectancy of tires can fall between 25,000 and 50,000 miles. That's a big gap, and car owners should check their vehicle manuals to see if their vehicle manufacturer recommends a more specific replacement interval.

The lifespan and amount of distance a driver can get out of a tire is dependent on a combination of factors:

• Design of the tire

• Driver habits

• Weather conditions

• Road conditions

• Tire maintenance

It's worth noting that mileage is not the only barometer drivers should use to determine if they need to buy new tires. The following tips can help

drivers determine if now is the time to outfit their vehicle with new tires.

Measure the tread

A tire assessment should always include measuring the amount of remaining tread. Drivers can do this on their own in various ways. One method involves looking at the tread wear bars, which are little bridges in the grooves between the ridges. If the bars are even with the tread pattern, then the tire has very little tread remaining and must be replaced. The quarter test is a popular way to determine if tires must be replaced. Put the edge of the coin into the tread, with the Queen going in headfirst.

If the top of the Queen's head is covered by tread, that's good. If the top of her head is entirely visible, it's time to replace the tire. The exact tread measurement for an end-of-life tire in Canada is 1.6mm.

Check for other signs of wear and tear

Little remaining tread is not the only sign tires must be replaced. Tires with cracked sidewalls, discoloration and/or bulging need to be replaced.

Confirm a larger issue isn't lurking

Uneven wear on tires is typically a byproduct of a more significant issue. Though tires that have worn unevenly will need to be replaced, replacing them without correcting the more significant

issue will only lead to more uneven wear on the new tires. That's a costly mistake. Poor wheel alignment or suspension issues are typically to blame for uneven wear. This issue can be fixed and should be addressed before purchasing a new set of tires. Nails and stones stuck in the tire should be obvious and taken care of by a professional tire installer as soon as possible.

PLEASE DON’T TEXT AND DRIVE

Because it only takes a second to change a life forever…

Protect your own life and the lives of others by making a pledge to never text or talk on the phone while driving. If you are in the car with a distracted driver, let them know it bothers you and ask them to drive phone-free. A message from your friends at Georgian Life Media Inc.

Though vehicles can’t function without them, few drivers think about tires until something goes wrong.

What is a Habitat ReStore and how does it help my community?

Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a home and building supply store that accepts and resells quality new and used building materials. Shopping at the Habitat ReStore is a socially conscious decision, as funds generated are used to fund local Habitat for Humanity homebuilding projects. It’s also an environmentally conscious decision, as much of what is sold is product that is new, gently used or customer returns that would otherwise end up in a landfill.

Every Habitat ReStore is different, offering a unique shopping experience for those looking to add something new to their homes. The inventory is always changing, as new items are donated by local residents and businesses daily. Consumers can expect to find items such as home décor, windows, doors, paint, hardware, lumber, tools, lighting fixtures, furniture and appliances.

• We’ll take your gently used furniture and household items and give them a new life.

• We’ll take your Electronic Waste (keep them out of a landfill)

• We’ll take your excess or discontinued store inventory (plus, your donation shows your customers that you care about the environment and your community.)

Your ReStore purchase builds the story of home:

Every purchase offers new opportunity.

Proceeds from the sales at Habitat ReStore helps fund Habitat for Humanity’s mission: to bring communities together to help families build strength, stability and self-reliance through affordable homeownership.

Why be a conscious shopper?

Purchasing sustainable goods is a wonderful way to make an environmentally friendly choice. You’re choosing to give a new life to an item, while also saving money and supporting a good cause.

You’re also likely to find unique pieces. There are so many one-of-a-kind items that are difficult to find in other places. You're also helping to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Unleash your Inner Artist

One of the best parts of shopping Habitat ReStore is the treasure you’ll find when you see the potential of items and revive them. You can take a dresser and by adding some paint, or new knobs, you’ve got an original, one of a kind piece that you can either keep or even resell! DIY projects are a fantastic way to reduce, reuse and recycle.
