Emancipation Day at Blue Mountain Village Blue Mountain Village hosted a wonderful inaugural Emancipation Day celebration with an incredible musical entertainment and activities lineup on August 1st. From the BMVA: "On March 24, 2021, the House of Commons voted unanimously to officially designate August 1 Emancipation Day. It marks the actual day in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect across the British Empire. Canadians are not always aware that Black and Indigenous Peoples were once enslaved on the land that is now Canada. Those who fought enslavement were pivotal in shaping our society to be as diverse as it is today. Therefore, each August 1, Canadians are invited to reflect, educate and engage in the ongoing fight against anti-Black racism and discrimination and celebrate the strength and perseverance of Black communities in Canada."

Getting up in the world over Collingwood is easy thanks to George Czerny and his latest small-book project, "Come fly with George!" A 76-page magazine-style publication brings readers from take-off to sightseeing over Collingwood, the Blue Mountains and parts of southern Georgian Bay before returning to land. "For local residents, or out-of-town property owners, it gives an opportunity to see their neighbourhoods, perhaps their houses, the way the birds see them," said George. "For people who don't know the area, it's a great way to visit it," added George, who has been taking Collingwood and district photographs, both aerials and from the ground, for four decades. "Come Fly With George" is self-published and available for purchase on-line at www.blurb.ca, where one must first click on Blurb's bookstore and then click on the travel heading. That will lead to a directory of books, and "Come Fly With George" appears as one scrolls down.
Collingwood's Sidelaunch Days Harbourfront Festival was held on August 5-7 with a weekend full of activities celebrating the joy of being in, on, and around South Georgian Bay while commemorating the unique shipbuilding heritage of Collingwood. Featuring two days of SUP races organized by Ontario SUP Series, free kayak and SUP trials, a dockside bar, and free activities for all ages, Sidelaunch Days was a fun-filled family friendly experience. Life is better on the water
Non-negotiables: Many young people have created a list of important items they must have: a big starting salary, frequent time off for travel, four-day work weeks, fixed hours, etc. If one company doesn’t offer these, others likely will.
“I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now.”
However, poor old “1991 Me” didn’t stand a chance, and I spent the entire weekend at the office, missing the big game and the parties.
You Can’t Fire Me, I Quietly Quit!
Back in our day (note to self: ever since I turned 55 last year, I’m saying things like “back in our day” a lot more; stop doing that), finding a job wasn’t difficult. We finished school, got a job and moved on with life. But, in the last few decades, we have heard sad stories of a lack of good jobs for young people. They were graduating but unable to find work in their chosen fields and were forced to fend with high debt, low income, and poor job Perhapssatisfaction.thependulum
How do you look at this? It was character building, and taught me the value of hard work and the sacrifices that need to be made to advance. Or, it was unfair and unnecessary, and it’s great that young employees today know what they want and better advocate for themselves.

Quiet quitting: This term has been gaining a lot of traction lately and is about employees fulfilling their employment requirements but not going above and beyond by working longer hours, checking messages in the evenings and weekends, etc. According to the Tik Tok messenger who has recently made the term popular, “you are still doing your duties, but you are no longer subscribing to the hustle culture mentality that work has to be your life.” This quiet quitting concept means different things to different people: doing the bare minimum, or equal pay for equal work, or a proper work-life balance.
has now swung back in favour of young people again. For several economic and societal factors, including the pandemic and the aging baby boomer demographic, it appears to be a young person’s world again, and interesting concepts are taking hold.
Work from home: Many companies are finding employees don’t want to come to work every day anymore. If you try to make them, they likely can find other employment that suits them better.
All this makes me think back to my articling year with a large Bay St. law firm in 1991. I recall a weekend in November when my alma mater, Mt. Allison University in Sackville, N.B., was playing in the Vanier Cup that weekend. I had a lot of friends from across the country coming to Toronto for what shaped up to be a great reunion weekend. But literally, on the Friday afternoon before that weekend, a senior partner called me into his office and gave me a legal research assignment that he required on his desk by Monday morning. I couldn’t believe it. My weekend plans were ruined. This was something that he could have requested weeks earlier and didn’t require the Monday deadline. It was like he was testing me. And wanted to ruin my weekend.
7GEORGIAN LIFE • SEPTEMBER 2022
If this was “2022 Me”, I might have reminded him of my non-negotiable terms of employment and that I quietly quit every Friday afternoon, not to return to work until Monday morning, and turning off my email and cell phone until then. And, oh yeah, I work from home on Mondays and Fridays.
I see both sides. We need to keep our work ethic and the ability to grind out challenging, unpleasant tasks. But it’s also a different world now, with everything and everyone connected, 24/7. The pressures are overwhelming. I commend the younger generation for creating and demanding the worklife situations that best suit them.

The mandate of CMN is to increase awareness of the need for funding for children's hospitals. Their imperative is shared by Raymond Hardisty, a local hero from Stayner Ontario, who embodies a drive for fund-raising that aims to change kids’ health. Since 2008, Raymond has raised more than $126,000 for CMN and the Hospital for Sick Children. CMN ensures funds are distributed across the community in which they are raised so that donations are directed to local hospitals to fund critical treatments, healthcare services, medical equipment, and research.

Raymond's motive for raising funds is personal. He wants to give back to the hospital that saved his life as a child. "Speaking from experience, I know that there are kids today who, just like me when I was a kid, want to feel better and go home."
You may recall Raymond's story from the June 2021 Cancer Chat. Raymond was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder called Kostmann's Neutropenia. The disorder causes a deficiency of white blood cells that can cause the patient to eventually develop acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
Raymond was diagnosed with AML at the age of four. In April 1994, Raymond received a bonemarrow transplant in an attempt to increase the success of chemotherapy to treat AML. Although the cancer was cured, due to the transplant, Raymond developed a medical complication called graft versus host disease (GVHD), which has affected his appearance. After years of visits to the hospital and fighting hundreds of medical complications, Raymond has been cancer free for 28 years. Now Raymond wants to give back. "No child should have to spend the first few years of their life or their birthday or Christmas in the hospital."
Early in his fundraising campaign, Raymond sold paper balloons to customers at the Dairy Queen where he worked. During the pandemic, due to a compromised immune system from multiple treatments over the years, Raymond had to keep away from his job at the Dairy Queen. But, the pandemic did not dampen his spirit for raising money for the hospital that he credits for saving his life. In 2020, Raymond started a bottle drive to collect alcohol-related empties, glass, and plastics to continue to raise money in support of CMN. Raymond's bottle drive slogan, "Turn your empties into hope," underscores the integrity of this young man. "It's my way of saying thank you to Sick Kids Hospital for giving me my life back."
Our publicly funded health care system is financed through taxation. Yet, government decisions to limit spending on health care create deficits that impact medical infrastructure. Hospitals across Ontario rely on significant contributions from donor communities. Non-profit organizations such as Children's Miracle Network (CMN) raise funds for children's hospitals across Canada. Donations support the health of 10 million children each year.
The bottle drive in previous years took place over 16 weeks. This year, Raymond and the team collected bottles on three days: June 1, July 6, and August 10. "We take whatever we can on those days," Raymond tells me. Collection day starts by putting on bottle drive t-shirts and setting up bottle drive signs. The event began in the evening and involved a team effort to collect loads of empty glass and plastic bottles. People bring the bottles in blue recycling receptacles, garbage bags, and heavy cardboard crates. Some people indicate the number of cans in the boxes, helping the sorting process. During the collection, Raymond and the team initiated the laborious process of separating the bottles and getting them ready for return. By the end, Raymond says, "the trailer is packed from the ground to the roof!" The next day, the bottles are returned. Raymond and his team unload their trailers at the beer store, collecting just under $900 in June, over $1,400 in July, and over $1,500 in August. "It all adds up," Raymond says. Raymond has been recognized for his efforts. In August 2018, he threw the first pitch at a Blue Jays game in Toronto. In August of 2021, he was awarded the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship by the Stayner Lions Club for a tremendous contribution to humanity and to the legacy of Lions Club founder Melvin Jones. In November 2021, Dairy Queen honoured Raymond with the Beacon of Hope award. The award is presented to North American DQ employees who go above and beyond in their fundraising efforts to support Sick Kids hospital. Presented every other year since 2014, Raymond is the fifth recipient and the only Canadian to receive the award. The Novmeber 25 presentation was a complete surprise; Sherry Schapp, former DQ franchise owner, asked if Raymond could come to the store to give a lecture to trainees about his fund-raising efforts. He arrived to see Schaap, a representative from DQ Canada, and a film crew. "He is the most inspirational person," said Schaap, who recently retired in 2020 as owner of Stayner Dairy Queen. "Raymond has spent his lifetime being a beacon of hope to others."

That’s why we are making housing a priority because decent housing transforms futures, strengthens communities, and fosters resiliency and stability that can transcend generations. We are committed to partnering with the government, with other affordable housing advocates, and with communities at most risk, to tackle the housing crisis in Ontario.
• According to the Ontario Home Builders Association, one million homes will need to be built over the next decade. Supply is critical to making housing affordable.
• Encourage the provincial government to revise the Planning Act, Provincial Policy Statement, 2020, and other related legislation and plans to enable municipalities to increase their supply of affordable housing in a timely manner.
• Waive fees and development charges for affordable homeownership and encourage local developers to partner with not-for-profit housing providers such as Habitat.
For 20 years, Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay has made a difference in the lives of local families living with low-income. Today, we need your help more than ever before. By supporting Habitat, you are showing your commitment to a healthy community and helping those in need. How can you help raise funds?
A fun and easy way to engage others from your workplace, school, sports team, family and social group. No fundraiser is too small or too big! 100% of the funds you raise will go directly to our builds to give local families a helping hand. Your event can be as simple as a bbq, garage sale or yoga-athon or as big as a gala or golf tournament!
Your monthly gift will change the future of children and families in need of a safe, decent home. When you become a Habitat for Humanity monthly donor, your gift provides consistent and stable funding that lets us make long term plans for building our safe and affordable homes. We use volunteers and inkind donations to keep building costs low. And, thanks to the operation of our ReStore, our administrative and fundraising costs are covered, meaning your donor dollar goes even further. Please also consider Habitat for Humanity during the upcoming Holiday Season for your year end donation!

As the housing affordability gap continues to widen across the nation, families living with low-income are increasingly less likely to qualify for homeownership and continue to struggle to access affordable housing. We must act now, and we must act together to support affordable housing across the continuum, including affordable homeownership.

• Make publicly owned land available for affordable housing, prioritizing not-for-profit affordable housing providers like Habitat with access in high priority areas, decommissioned schools, vacant or surplus lands used to create affordable housing.
As we prepare for municipal elections on October 24, affordable housing should be top of mind. Addressing the housing continuum – from homelessness through to market-rate homeownership – we need to come together to tackle the urgent and persistent issue of housing affordability. Urgency is key given the need for affordable housing. Private sector offerings will only meet some of this great demand, non-market offerings will be critical.
Already planning an event? Consider adding a fundraising component in support of CelebratingHabitat.abirthday, anniversary or special occasion? Consider requesting a donation to Habitat in lieu of gifts. The options are limitless – and so is the impact!

A much needed extension for youth
"We have an opportunity to improve and change the lives of youth in our community, one life at a time, and provide hope, opportunity and a chance to succeed." Fund Development Manager, Home Horizon, Deb Piggott.
Thanks to all the support shown throughout the community, Home Horizon's Barbara Weider House Youth Transition Home has expanded the house from 6 bedrooms to 10, which enables us to serve more youth for many generations to come. In addition to adding four new bedrooms, Home Horizon's renovation includes many other upgrades that are critical to assisting the clients we serve. This includes a dedicated community space that will be utilized by our Youth Outreach program. In recent months we have seen a 63% increase in the demand for outreach services driven by a number of factors, including the housing crisis and COVID-19. We have also added a number of security features to help keep our clients safe; fencing around the property to provide private outdoor green space and upgrades to our fire systems.
"We are not winning the battle against youth homelessness. This expansion will help Home Horizon meet the growing demand for transitional housing for youth", Garth Martin, Home Horizon Past Chair, Expansion Project Manager. Home Horizon will be holding their 8th annual Spirit of Collingwood event, taking place at Alpine Ski Club on Saturday October 29, 2022. 100% of the funds raised are going to support Home Horizon Barbara Weider House for youth who are at risk of facing homelessness in the South Georgian Bay area. Community members come together to celebrate the spookiest day of the year to sample a selection of local spirits and gourmet tastings supplied by local restaurants and caterers, there will be great live and silent auctions and finally a fabulous dinner and dance at the Alpine Ski Club all while generating greater awareness and raising much needed funds for Home Horizon.
Despite being a relatively invisible problem in our community, youth homelessness is an increasing crisis in South Georgian Bay. In response to this need, Home Horizon, a local charitable organization with 15 years of history of helping the homeless in our community, built the Barbara Weider House. The Barbara Weider House provides a safe home and a welcoming communal environment – something many of these youth have never had. In addition, all the youth have access to counselling and life skills programs to help them successfully transition to independent living and adulthood.

Home Horizon takes this opportunity to express a heartfelt thank you for the support and contributions made by this team. We are very fortunate to live, work and play here in this place we call home with such wonderful partners.
Kevin and Laurie Blair and their staff and trades completed the project on budget and within incredibly tight timelines. The Alair Homes team and their trades, went above and beyond, donating a lot of their time and materials to this special project. From the moment Kevin and Laurie Blair arrived in the Collingwood area, they jumped right in to support this community and specifically Home Horizon and the Barbara Weider House. "To be a part of giving back to our community, is something that defines who we are as a company and how we model our business practices. We are very fortunate to grow our business in such a great area, and we feel this is a priority to give back." Laurie & Kevin Blair.

Georgian Hills Vineyard hosted their fifth annual Vinestock on July 24th. Guests sipped on wine, cider and brew offerings while enjoying talented local musicians, summer fun activities and delicious food in a picnic-style atmosphere. Proceeds from the event will be donated to The South Georgian Bay Music Foundation, which helps students experience the rewards and opportunities of music education by increasing music presentations in the schools and financial support for their musical needs.
The Village Green, a project of the Creemore Community Foundation, has created a community space, rich in history, which will be a people space and a regional landmark. On August 20th, The Village Green hosted its first major event – a ribbon cutting and grand opening of this wonderful space. The park’s features are a direct result of a community consultation when the Creemore branch of the TD Bank closed and then donated the land to the Foundation. The project grew in scope and resulted in a complete redesign. In addition to a new splash pad, the popular “Children’s Dress Up Dance” fountain has been restored and placed on its new base, and Ernest Herzig’s sculpture entitled “Harmony” has also been reinstalled. Creemore Horticultural Society has planted several new colourful flower gardens. This wonderful people space will surely become a meeting place which will attract kids of all ages to enjoy their picnic lunches amid such visual splendour.

The Great Waterfront Trail Adventure (GWTA) is an annual, supported, multi-day cycle tour and awareness ride to promote the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail and the communities that support the trail. Cyclists felt the wind, water, and earth, from Midland to Meaford, peddling to local wineries, craft breweries, hidden treasures, and unique neighbourhoods. Some cyclists chose to stay overnight and have their bags forwarded to the next stop. On August 12th, the Collingwood rest stop was Sunset Point, where Summit Social House provided complementary iced coffee. Acting Deputy Mayor of Collingwood, Mariane McCleod, was on hand to cheerfully greet the cyclists as they arrived.

• Formation of tire flat spots. When tires are not used frequently, the weight of the car can continually put pressure on the same parts of the tires, leading to flat spots. Tires also can lose pressure if they sit too long.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, individuals may not realize that failing to drive their vehicles regularly also can affect performance. So here’s a closer look at what can happen when vehicles sit idle for lengthy periods of time.
The effects of infrequent driving on vehicle performance
• Battery loses its charge. The battery in a vehicle is still being used even if the car isn’t running. Batteries power various components in a car, such as the vehicle computer, phone chargers and more. If the engine does not turn over and help to recharge the battery, the battery will eventually die. People who drive infrequently may want to consider a trickle charger plugged in during periods of non-use.
Driving puts a certain measure of wear and tear on a vehicle. Whether a vehicle is used primarily for commuting or as a vessel to take travellers to parts unknown, wear and tear are inevitable.

• Tire rot can set in. Dry tire rot is deterioration that sets into the rubber. The material dries out and becomes brittle, causing splits and cracks to form. Driving with tire rot can cause tires to deflate.
• Rust and corrosion can occur. There is still plenty of metal in modern vehicles. A vehicle that has been exposed to salt or rain or one that is stored in a moist climate can be susceptible to undercarriage or engine rust. This may cause damage that’s not easily repaired.
• Damage from sap or droppings. A vehicle parked in one location for a long time could be a target for bird droppings, fallen berries, sap, and other substances potentially harmful to the paint job. Leaving the car or truck in the sun also means UV rays can cause the clear coat over the paint to oxidize and begin to fail, producing blotchy or peeling spots.
• Poor brake performance. When vehicles are left to sit, corrosion could build up on the rotors, and the brake pads may become less flexible. Moisture also may seep into brake lines, causing issues with the pressurization of brake fluid. Each of these factors adds up to brakes that do not work correctly - which is a significant safety hazard.
• Oil and other fluids may lose efficacy. Various fluids can go stale in a vehicle if it isn’t regularly driven.

home
The Canadian Automobile Association reports that the Government of Canada offers point-of-sale incentives of as much as $5,000 for drivers who buy or lease an EV. These subsidies can help bring the cost of EV ownership down by a significant amount and are worth exploring as drivers decide which electric car or truck to buy.
Consider your parking situation
Homeowners who own single-family homes with a garage that can accommodate at least one vehicle can easily charge their EVs so long as they clear space in the garage where the car can be parked. Auto Trader notes that some garages may need to be upgraded with a level two charger, which can be expensive. Drivers who must park their EVs outdoors overnight should also know that this may require additional funds for electric vehicle service equipment (EVSE). Local building codes may govern the installation of such equipment, which is best performed by an electrician. These are some additional costs of EV ownership that first-time buyers must consider and research before they switch to an electric car or truck. EVs may become the new normal over the next several decades. But, before that day arrives, first-time EV buyers must consider a host of factors as they shop around for an electric car or truck.
Auto buyers have more EV options now than ever before, which can make buying such a car more exciting and complex. Narrowing down a growing number of options may not come easy to first-time EV buyers, who can keep these tips in mind as they begin this exciting journey.

The number of public charging stations is on the rise, but there’s still a lot of work to be done in this area. Consumers indicate that battery or charging issues are their foremost concerns about buying EVs. Most EVs have enough battery range to cover more than the average daily commute. But, drivers who hope to use their EVs as their everyday cars that take them to work and help them run errands and get around town should confirm there are enough public charging stations to make that possible.
Electric vehicles are widely touted as the vehicles of the future. However, despite the growing availability of such cars today, EVs remain a novelty for many drivers. Therefore, buying an EV for the first time is a new and unique experience.
