A note for November This Remembrance Day we will pause to reflect on the courage, dedication and loyalty of our nation’s military veterans. Throughout history, their hard work and sacrifice have kept us safe and protected our freedom. We owe them a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid, and we salute them for their service. To all of the brave men and women who have sacrificed, we thank you. While 2020 has been a textbook example of plans thrown out the window, we have been working extremely hard to “pivot” and continue to make each monthly issue of Georgian Life a great one! Without many events to cover, we have had to focus more on providing interesting, positive and uplifting stories that celebrate the heart, lifestyle and activities of those who live, work and play here. I think we have done a pretty darn good job throughout this issue. One thing that has not changed (and never will) is we are committed to promoting the shop local message by recognizing the people and businesses who help make this such a vibrant area to live in. If you have not been on our website www.georgianlife.ca please head there (scan the QR code below with your phone camera) to see what we have been up to online! Last month, we launched several photo contests (with amazing prizes), and our site now features more user-friendly software on the READ AN ISSUE page where you can download a pdf or look through the magazine on a full screen and every ad has a hyperlink to their website and/or email address.

To this day McCrae’s poem remains among the most memorable war poems ever written. It also paved the way for the poppy flower to be one of the most recognized symbols of wartime remembrance. Thousands of poppies are placed on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and Remembrance Day participants wear poppies on their lapels.

REMEMBRANCE DAY: DON’T SHUT OUT THE LIGHT Remembrance Day dates back over 100 years to the armistice ending WWI in 1918. On November 11th at 11 am each year, we pause in a moment of silence to honour and remember the men and women who have served our country in times of war, conflict and peace. The world’s great writers have long chronicled the horrors of war and traumatic impact on its participants. John McCrae was a Canadian physician and poet, who at the age of 41 in 1914, volunteered with the Canadian military as a gunner and medical officer. In an April,1915 letter, he wrote of the chaotic nightmare he experienced during the Second Battle of Ypres in Belgium and the first mass use of chlorine gas as a weapon by the German army: For seventeen days and nights none of us have had our clothes off, nor our boots even, except occasionally. In all that time, while I was awake, gunfire and rifle fire never ceased for sixty seconds… And behind it all was the constant background of the sights of the dead, the wounded, the maimed, and a terrible anxiety lest the line should give way. Soon after, a close friend was killed in battle, and the next day McCrae wrote the famous “In Flanders Fields”: In Flanders fields the poppies grow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.

Thank you, frontline and essential workers We are so grateful for your steadfast efforts to keep us safe As we all continue to navigate the uncharted waters of 2020, our team would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the frontline warriors, essential workers and small business owners who continue to keep our community safe and prosperous. A true sense of community is more important today than ever before, and we are so proud of the strength and unity in the South Georgian Bay area.

For those who survive, the end of war and return home often does not end the nightmare. A beautiful and haunting song by Bruce Springsteen, Shut Out The Light, poignantly relates the returning soldier’s struggle. His wife, family and friends all want to make life normal for him again, but how can it ever be: He felt her lying next to him, the clock said 4 am He was staring at the ceiling, he couldn’t move his hands… On his porch they stretched a banner that said “Johnny Welcome Home” Bobby pulled his Ford out of the garage and they polished up the chrome His mama said “Johnny oh Johnny, I’m so glad to have you back with me” His pa said he was sure they’d give him his job back down at the factory

NOV SPECIALS EYES

However, Johnny is deeply haunted by his experience in Vietnam, and he pleads for his mother to just hold him tight: Deep in a dark forest, a forest filled with rain Beyond a stretch of Maryland pines, there’s a river without a name In the cold black water Johnson Leneir stands He stares across the lights of the city and dreams of where he’s been

The Importance of Remembrance Canadians often associate The Royal Canadian Legion with Remembrance ceremonies and events. Through these initiatives, we honour and remember Canada’s fallen Veterans and help ensure Canadians never forget. The Legion is responsible for planning and coordinating annual Remembrance Day ceremonies in communities across the country, including the national ceremony in Ottawa. For many, our most widely known activity is the annual Poppy campaign that leads up to Remembrance Day. Legion members and other volunteers distribute tens of millions of poppies, and gratefully accept donations to raise money in support of Veterans and their families. While November is recognized as a time of Remembrance, for the Legion and for many across the country, Remembrance is a year-long commitment. At any given moment, there are many opportunities available to anyone wishing to show their appreciation for those who served, including: • Becoming a Legion member to support Veterans year-round • Making a donation to the Legion’s Poppy Trust Fund at any Legion Branch • Saying “Thank you” to a Veteran • Wearing a Poppy

Your Hometown Restaurant since 1991

• Honouring a fallen Veteran on the Legion’s Wall of Honour and Remembrance • Planting Poppy seeds or growing a garden of Remembrance • Visiting a cenotaph • Inviting a Legion Branch to make a presentation at a school or community group • Participating in the Legion’s Pilgrimage of Remembrance • Wearing or displaying commemorative items from the Poppy Store • Visiting the Canadian War Museum or local history museums

To all of those who have served, and those who continue to serve... Thank you! 49 Huron Street Collingwood 705-444-5804

• Volunteering to help Veterans, and more! Most importantly, take a moment now and then to reflect on the freedoms and peace in your life, and to remember the men and women who served and sacrificed for all we have today.

Remembrance Day Remembrance Day is a day for all Canadians to remember the men and women who served and sacrificed for our country. It is a day we encourage every individual, young and old, to pause, to give thanks and to remember.

Honour and Remember The Remembrance Day Ceremony has played a major role in Remembrance since 1931. Every year, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we gather in memorial parks, community halls, workplaces, schools and homes to stand in honour of all who have fallen.

Together, we observe a moment of silence to mark the sacrifice of the many who have fallen in the service of their country, and to acknowledge the courage of those who still serve.Â

2020 National Remembrance Day Ceremony: A more intimate commemoration The global pandemic has directly affected the execution of this year’s National Remembrance Day Ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. However, The Royal Canadian Legion is still planning for a much smaller yet heartfelt ceremony, which will include a maximum of 100 participants. The importance of a live ceremony honouring our Veterans and their sacrifices is considered paramount by the Legion, especially during

the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. As so many other commemorations have either been cancelled or delayed by the current pandemic the symbology of our Legions and community leaders paying homage to past sacrifices and before the eyes of those that served is more important now than ever. Our pledge to never forget echoes loudly throughout a land that has been immersed in isolation with a population whose focus is far from the events that we honour with this ceremony. The 2020 National Remembrance Ceremony will be conducted live at the National War Memorial on 11 Nov 2020. Many elements of the previously conducted ceremony will take place while working within the restrictions imposed by the current pandemic. If you are isolating or not attending a local ceremony you can watch the 2020 National Remembrance Day Ceremony live on November 11, starting at 10:45 am, on the Legion’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/CanadianLegion

FEATURE PET: ASHLEE Hi everyone, my name is Ashlee. I arrived at GTHS a few months ago after being found as a stray, wandering around all alone and....had a belly full of babies!! So, the GTHS humans put me into one of these nice “foster home” places right away where they knew I’d be safe, comfy and cozy to give birth to my babies and raise them to be big and strong! It was nice having a kind and caring human around to help show me that I can trust people (and they even helped me look after my babies from time to time). I was a great mom to my little ones though and they’ve since “left the nest” to find wonderful new homes of their very own! So, now it’s finally my turn!!

I’m a very friendly girl, but still a wee bit nervous of new people at first. But if you give me a bit of time to settle in and get to know you at my own pace, you’ll see the sweetest girl blossom right in front of you! I’m not fully on board with being picked up and held for a snuggle yet BUT hehe I am very curious about it and try it out from time to time to see if I like it. With some patience (and understanding that in my 4 years, this could be my first time ever being loved by people), I just know that you and I will become a great pair! For me, I think a calm and quiet home would be best. Maybe with some full-grown humans, if that’s okay (the tiny humans might be a little much for a shy girl like me). I know I won’t be the right fit for everyone, and that’s okay, because I know my purrfect person is out there and will find me. My adoption fee is $100 and includes my spay, up to date vaccinations, dewormer and a microchip! I can’t wait to start this new life with a human of my very own soon. ANIMALS IN WAR As Canadians come together on Remembrance Day to remember and honour those who have served their country, the war-time contributions of animals will also be recognized through the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society’s Animals in War commemorative pins. A variety of animals have served in wartime. Mules carried artillery, horses transported troops and hauled field guns, pigeons delivered crucial messages and dogs served as messengers, medical assistants, bomb detectors and search and rescue workers. This year, to support veterans and Legions through challenges brought on by COVID-19, $2.50 from each pin sold will be donated to Royal Canadian Legion branches across the province. The Animals in War pin is designed to be worn alongside your poppy to remember our veterans and the animals who bravely served by their side. 4th Canadian Division Training Centre The 4th Canadian Division Training Center (4 CDTC) in Meaford, is dedicated to the training and development of new soldiers and leaders in service of the Canadian Forces. The current role of 4 CDTC not only includes being a training facility for Regular and Reserve soldiers in Ontario, but also hosts a variety of other countries military units and non military agencies. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, 4 CDTC trained over 600 soldiers on any given week, but that number has been reduced to respect preventative health measures issued by the provincial and local health authorities. The primary training is directed to basic Soldier Qualification skills pertaining to the combat arms, primarily field craft, offensive and defensive operations, weapons handling drills and the tactics techniques and procedures on employing these skills in a combat setting. Military units from the United States, New Zealand, Jamaica, United Kingdom and others have taken advantage of what 4 CDTC has to offer. In addition, Police agencies, security services and emergency service organisations from all over the province and from outside the country have honed their skills and refreshed their knowledge at 4 CDTC.

The Poppy is a Symbol of Wartime Remembrance The poppy has stood as the official symbol of Canada’s Remembrance Day since 1921, a visual reminder of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for war. Some may wonder why this small flower is used to represent the fallen soldier. Poppies and fallen soldiers have a long history together. The origins of the flower can be traced back to the Napoleonic wars in France. During these times of unrest and battle, many soldiers went on to final resting places in graves in Flanders, France. Ensuing literature describing how poppies grew so thickly and vibrantly over these graves — in soil that once could not produce much vegetation. Years later, a soldier would be instrumental in bringing the symbol of the poppy to the hearts and minds of Canadians. When John McCrae served in World War I as a Lieutenant-Colonel, he was stationed near Ypres, Belgium, the area traditionally called Flanders. McCrae observed how poppies grew so well among the makeshift graves of the soliders, which were marked by wooden crosses. When McCrae lost a fellow soldier and close friend, he penned a poem called “In Flanders Fields and portrayed the picture of war and the poppy flower visual. (Poem on page 4)

Thank You

for your service

“They answered the call” Clearview Veterans Memorial Banners We can proudly look across our great nation and give thanks for all our blessings and for the men and women who served and continue to serve and protect our nation. They came from both urban and rural communities, from all walks of life, from a mosaic of backgrounds. They all shared a common goal - to protect and defend the freedoms enjoyed, not only by their generation but generations that would follow, freedoms which we enjoy today in this land called Canada, in this community we call Clearview. The banner project was conceived a few years ago and was based upon love, gratitude and remembrance to those within our community that served. For all of us at the Heritage Society, it was an emotional journey. The entire Heritage Society team made this project happen and they are to be congratulated for a job well done. The banners honouring our First and Second World War veterans have been mounted on the downtown lamp posts and will re-main there until after Remembrance Day. We wish to thank all the families of the veterans for their ongoing support as well as the Stayner Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations. The entire Veterans Memorial Banner dedication ceremony can be viewed by visiting our web site at www.staynerheritagesociety.com | Submitted by Tom Scholte

On the main thoroughfare through town, in front of the Town Hall on the north-east corner of North Sykes Street (Highway 26) and Nelson Street a beautiful memorial featuring a statue of a soldier in action, and the names of those who gave their lives in the World Wars is featured. Originally built shortly after the Great War, the plaques for World War II and Korea were later added. It is dedicated to the men of Meaford and St. Vincent Township. The main base of the memorial lists the names of famous battles from the First World War.

In a small park at the northeast corner of Grey Road 2 and Grey Road 119. Ravenna is a very small farming community, formerly Collingwood Township, in the hills of Grey County, however its contribution to the war effort in the Great Wars was not so small. A long list of names of the dead appear on the front of this memorial, and a larger list of names of those who served is engraved on the back. It is the small rural communities like this all across Canada which provided the brave men needed to defend our freedom. A statue of a soldier standing at attention graces the top of this memorial.

In front of the town museum at 45 St. Paul Street. This cenotaph is a beautiful example of the dedication of a small town to commemorate those who volunteered to serve their country and lay down their lives for the greater good. A concrete slab supports a granite base and stations a 16 foot bronze figure of a First World War Canadian soldier in uniform. In 1960 granite “wings” flanking the original Cenotaph were installed and commemorate 52 Collingwood men who died in the Second World War. It was in 1982, that the Korean War Veterans were acknowledged on the wings. There is also a World War I artillery piece on the grounds of the park, as well as a plaque honouring the Merchant Marine service. Photos/Info: Tim Laye https://ontariowarmemorials.blogspot.com/

Hearing in the age of face masks

ADVERTISE IN THE DECEMBER ISSUE OF

GEORGIAN LIFE! 9,000 copies are printed every month and distributed in Wasaga Beach, Creemore, Stayner, Collingwood, Blue Mountain and Thornbury at over 60 locations.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our lives in many ways. One such way is the ‘new-normal’ of wearing face masks. Although face masks play a critical role in this pandemic they also create difficulties for individuals with hearing loss. The inability to see a person’s mouth and lips move during speech can negatively affect the comprehension in someone with hearing loss. Without these visual cues, and by people keeping a safe (2m) distance, the issue is further compounded. Face masks also physically change the sound of speech. Not all masks are created equal and there are some that affect speech more than others. A team of researchers at the University of Illinois recently conducted a study on the acoustical effects various face masks have on speech signals. The researchers used a head-shaped loudspeaker to measure sound transmission through masks. Microphones were placed in different locations 2 meters apart to represent physical-distancing. They also recorded a live person speaking while wearing various masks. Types of masks included surgical, cotton jersey, N95 respirator, a PVC window (where a person can see the mouth through the mask), and a plastic face shield. Results of the research showed that all masks lessened high-frequency sounds above 1000 Hz. There was an even greater decrease in high-frequency sounds above 4000 Hz. Important consonants such as ‘s’, ‘f’, ‘sh’, and others are heard at these high frequencies. When this is coupled with hearing loss, it compounds the issue. The research also found that the more breathable masks, such as surgical and plain-weave cotton, transmit sound better than the masks with plastic windows and those with densely woven fabrics. Although face shields and clear masks have the advantage of providing visual cues, they lessened the high-frequency sounds more than any of the other masks. While all masks muffle the sound at the front of the face other masks, especially those with plastic windows and shields, they may deflect sound in other directions. Research found that wearing a microphone on the chest or lapel mitigated the effects caused by masks. This is beneficial as modern hearing aids have remote microphone technology. You can choose to add a remote microphone as an accessory to a new or existing hearing aid(s). Now that research is highlighting the negative effects of mask wearing has on hearing, it is important to ensure you are getting the most out of your hearing aids. If you or a loved one is having increased difficulty hearing, contact your Audiologist for an assessment.

1-877-895-9766 www.glidingshelf.ca Thank you to recent Hospital Heroes!

When the COVID-19 lockdown hit our area in the spring, members of the Mad River Golf Club, led by Teri Yamada, joined together to make a specific donation to the Collingwood Hospital. To focus their fundraising efforts, Teri asked the Foundation which piece of equipment might be valuable to Collingwood General and Marine Hospital at this time and as a group, they chose to support the purchase of PAPR Systems. A PAPR System (Powered Air-Purifying Respirator) is worn by a healthcare provider and offers superior integrated respiratory, head, face, eye and hearing protection. PAPR’s are used to conduct high-risk procedures when caring for critically ill patients such as anaesthetists and respiratory therapists when intubating patients. PAPR’s are also reusable pieces of equipment so not only will they help many staff during this pandemic, they can be used for treatment scenarios in the future. At the cost of $3,000 per unit, the total amount raised by the group was an amazing $14,725, which went a long way towards outfitting CGMH with these valuable PAPR units. Pictured above are a few of the members who were among the group who supported this important purchase of equipment. Photo from left to right, Brian French,

Gill Cameron who held an Art Show during the month of June and donated a portion of the sales during the month to support CGMHF. Gill also held an online auction for a unique painting, titled “UP HIGH” to help generate even more funds! “Art is an important part of my life just as having quality healthcare is an important part of our community” says Gill Cameron. “Hosting the show/auction was a natural and fun way for me to be able to give back and support CGMHF.” Photo: Gill Cameron & Jack Marley, Chair of CGMHF Board

It was a sunny day last week when the Georgian Bay Club Foundation came to present CGMHF with a donation of $85,000! These funds will be used to purchase additional hip & knee replacement instruments and a large battery drill. These are used daily in both trauma and joint replacement surgeries and will help Collingwood General and Marine Hospital meet the growing demand for orthopaedics in South Georgian Bay. Thank you Georgian Bay Club Foundation members for your continued generous support of the Collingwood Hospital and so many other deserving organizations in our area! The ‘gourd’ folks at Morrison Pumpkin Farm donated 5% of proceeds from this years’ harvest to support the Collingwood Hospital. These funds will help purchase Diagnostic Imaging equipment use daily. The market had pumpkins of all shapes and sizes for your fall decorating or cooking. Special thanks to the Morrison family who have been wonderful supporters of not just CGMH, but many other deserving community organizations over the years. Give the Gift of Wellness for Pets and People Starting this November 12th

The Georgian Triangle Humane Society’s Gift Giving Guide provides the opportunity to give a gift that will make a difference in the lives of our community members and pets who need us most. To make a gift please visit GTHS.ca or call 705-445-5204.

$25 - $200 will provide essential care supplies and medications for vulnerable animals who

come to the GTHS in need. Providing food, vaccinations, healthcare and safe shelter is the best way to prepare an animal for their new start in a loving home. From microchips to kennel repairs, there are so many ways that you can help animals to become healthy and strong!

$50 - $500 will keep a pet with their family during an emergency. When pets come to

the GTHS from families who cannot afford a one-time expense such as medical treatment or short-term boarding, the best alternative is to help keep the family together. The GTHS Pet Support Services will assist financially limited pet owners stay with their pets when they need them most.

For $1000 you can run a full day spay/neuter clinic for financially limited pet owners. Increasingly, pet owners facing significant financial pressure are coming to the GTHS unable to cover the cost of spay / neuter surgeries. This often means that pet owners face the unfortunate reality of having to surrender their beloved pets – pets that are essential to their emotional wellbeing and health.

Your Gift will be Matched!

The GTHS has responded to a massive number of requests by opening a weekly spay and neuter clinic for financially limited pet owners in the GTHS Animal Hospital. For $1000, you can fund a spay and neuter clinic and fix up to 30 pets. Your gift multiplies 2X in value thanks to a donation from a leading donor.

$2000 pays for an animal transfer. Working collaboratively with volunteers, donors, and

rescue partners, the GTHS runs an animal transport program that focuses on working together predominately with Northern communities. In 2019, 218 dogs were transported as part of this program to find loving adoptive homes through the GTHS adoption program. For $2000, you will sponsor the cost of an animal transfer and have the opportunity to name a litter of kittens or puppies from the group of animals that were part of the project.

Make a monthly gift of $15 - $100 per month. Approximately 2000 animals come through the doors of the Georgian Triangle Humane Society each year. By Joining our PAW Program, your monthly commitment will ensure that the GTHS can continue to help every animal who comes to us in their time of need. You can play a vital role in their health and wellness, and you can help to celebrate the human-animal bond.

Collingwood Army Cadets will honour our Veterans virtually this year The 1909 Collingwood Army Cadets offer a dynamic youth program whose purpose is to develop the attributes of leadership, citizenship and physical fitness within an environment that stimulates an interest in the Canadian Armed Forces. There is an emphasis on fun and engaging activities that challenge youth to become more self-confident, develop leadership skills, communication skills and self-discipline through challenging training. Cadets usually meet once a week and some weekends throughout the school year. Some of the activities that cadets participate in on a typical training night are ceremonial drill, sports, map reading and instruction on military fundamentals.

CALL TO ORDER: 705-429-3034 THE POPPY CAMPAIGN Every year, from the last Friday of October to November 11, tens of millions of Canadians wear a Poppy as a visual pledge to honour Canada’s Veterans and remember those who sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today. While the Poppy is distributed freely to all who wish to wear one, the Legion gratefully accepts donations to the Poppy Fund. The Poppy Campaign is very much a local initiative, conducted by Legion Branches in cities, towns and communities across the country. Donations collected during the Poppy Campaign are held in Trust at the branch level to directly support Veterans and their families within their community and to help ensure Canadians ‘never forget’.

Cadets could also try out for specialty teams such as marksmanship, orienteering and biathlon. There is no enrollment fee to join the cadet program, however, cadets are asked to take part in fundraising activities that support optional programming in which the corps participates in. The program is designed for youth ages 12-18. All uniforms are on loan and new cadets can register throughout the year by emailing 1909armycadets@gmail.com. Cadets are not expected to join the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and are free to leave any time however, those cadets that decide to join the CAF, start out with the advantage of having learned valuable skills through the Cadet program. Presently the cadets are meeting virtually on Thursday nights but hopefully will go back to in-person training at the Collingwood Legion Br. 63 very soon. Army Cadets offer challenges, fun, adventure and friendship and many cadets make friends for life!

This show of support and display of remembrance would not be possible without the efforts of thousands of Legionnaires and Cadets who volunteer to distribute Poppies to the community through schools, community organizations and local businesses. We are so grateful for their efforts, and for the support of the many partners, local and national, who welcome Legion volunteers and Poppy boxes into their locations. Source: www.legion.ca

For activities leading up to Remembrance Day, the Collingwood Army Cadets are continually active for the Collingwood Legion. Community service is highly encouraged, and all cadets are involved in the Legion Branch #63 Poppy Campaign, Remembrance Day Services and Remembrance Day dinners. They also have participated as Flag Party members at the Remembrance Day Ceremony and marched in the Remembrance Day Parade. When asked what Remembrance Day means to them, Cadet Corporal Wyville says: “It is the sacrifices that soldiers have made for us to be able to live a safe and happy life”. Cadet Sergeant Van Duyn: “How we, as a nation have built our reputation and the sacrifices that have been made to get us to where we are today”. Captain K. Kristy the Commanding Officer: “It is our collective responsibility to keep the memory alive of those who served our country so that the peace they fought so hard to achieve was not in vain”. Apart from passenger seating, horsepower and colour, wheel drive should be a consideration when car shopping. Several factors are considered before drivers purchase new vehicles. Wheel drive may not be the first such factor to come to mind, but it can be an important consideration when car shopping. With options such as 4WD, AWD, FWD and RWD, consumers should understand the differences of each type of drive in order to make the most informed decision. Rear-wheel drive With rear-wheel drive, the power goes to the back wheels to drive the vehicle. This used to be the system of choice because RWD systems were relatively easy to manufacture. RWD is the choice for many trucks because added load can offer additional traction in the back. Furthermore, rear-wheel drive is coveted for sporty vehicles and luxury cars. That’s because, as vehicles accelerate the weight is transferred to the rear wheel, enhancing traction and further acceleration. This drive also distributes weight more evenly, so cornering and handling is better. Front-wheel drive Front-wheel drive, which has become ubiquitous in cars produced today, is cheaper to design and build than RWD. Fewer parts mean the drivetrain is easier to install. It is also less heavy than others, helping vehicles to be lighter and consume less fuel. In rain and snow, FWD has excellent traction, so it’s an asset under poor weather conditions. Front-wheel drive vehicles are not prized for their handling because the front wheels have to put power to the ground and steer the car. Furthermore, unlike RWD, which is more rugged and durable, FWD is more fragile.

4WD is designed for rugged, off-road applications and AWD is for pavement driving. Pure 4WD is good for low-traction situations off of pavement, where additional grip is needed. In some 4WD vehicles, this drive needs to be engaged through a transfer switch. In such automobiles, the vehicle operates in FWD or RWD until that switch is engaged.

MASTER MECHANICS 6 BAYS | 6 HOISTS | FAST FRIENDLY SERVICE

All-wheel-drive provides the best of FWD, RWD and pure 4WD systems. The main advantage is excellent traction on both dry pavement and in poor weather. Some AWD vehicles may be able to go off-roading as well. Potential disadvantages to AWD include cost, vehicle weight and, because there are more components in AWD, more parts can fail and require servicing. AWD typically comes in part- and full-time versions.

Choosing a wheel drive requires an understanding of how one plans to use the vehicle and which attributes are most important.

DRIVE SAFE THESE BUSINESSES CAN HELP

Tire maintenance keeps drivers safe

Vehicle owners should be aware of the routine maintenance steps that can keep them safe and improve the life expectancy of tires. Tires are some of the hardest working parts on a car or truck and are subjected to wear and tear every time rubber meets the road. Tires affect many components of driving, including handling, braking and the comfort of the ride. Maintaining tires makes driving safe not only for drivers and their passengers, but also for fellow motorists.

improve the life expectancy of tires. • Tire pressure: Keeping tires properly inflated is one of the most important steps to maintaining them. Tires lose around 1 psi per month, and under inflated or over inflated tires can contribute to unusual wear, blowouts and even excessive fuel consumption.

Many tire-related crashes were no doubt preventable, and that only highlights the importance of maintaining tires and monitoring their performance. Poor tire maintenance can lead to premature wear and potentially result in a blowout. It is important to visually inspect tires as often as possible. Drivers should look for overall tread wear. Pay special attention to tread wear on one edge of the tires, which could indicate poor alignment. Erratic tread wear may mean tires are out of balance.

• Rotation: Check the owner’s manual or recommendations from the tire manufacturer, but it is recommended that tires should be rotated every 8,000-13,000 kilometres to achieve a uniform wear for all tires. • Balancing: Balancing also helps minimize uneven wear and tear. Balanced tires are achieved by using small weights attached to the wheels to limit vibration of the tire and wheels as they turn. New tires should be balanced, and tires also should be balanced after one or more is removed to repair a puncture.

Drivers also should pay attention to how their cars drive and sounds. Unusual vibration or thumping noises suggest issues with the tires. A car that pulls in one direction also may be experiencing tire problems. Vehicle owners should be aware of the routine maintenance steps that can keep them safe and

• Alignment: Vehicles have wheel alignment measurements that pertain to manufacturers’ specifications. Alignment that falls outside of the range can impact handling, fuel economy and tread wear. A drift or pull suggests alignment problems and should be addressed.

M ICS ABB A MATCHBOX TWENTY EURYTH

Giving thanks… the Collingwood way This year has had more than its share of extraordinary challenges and very trying times as we do our best to safely manage our day-to-day lives during a global pandemic and yet we still have so much to be thankful for. Perhaps more than ever we look forward to anything (that even in a small way) helps to normalize certainly anything but normal times and the return of the Collingwood Downtown Farmers’ Market this summer and fall was just one of those things. The Thanksgiving market on October 10th was the season finale. Thank you, Collingwood Downtown, for a great season and we look forward to sharing our Saturday mornings with you next year! Cancer Chat

Cancer is an insatiable monster that consumes the rich or poor, the famous or average without distinction. Recently, American musician, songwriter and guitar virtuoso Eddie Van Halen passed away from his ongoing battle with tongue cancer. Eddie Van Halen formed the classic rock band, Van Halen, in 1972 with his brother Alex on drums, Michael Anthony on bass and David Lee Roth singing. The band achieved superstardom in the 1980s and became well known for their energetic live shows and Eddie’s prodigious guitar playing. They released hit after hit including the classics Runnin’ with the Devil, Hot for Teacher, Panama, and Jump. Eddie became a pop culture icon in 1983 when his iconic guitar solo was featured on Michael Jackson’s song Beat It. Van Halen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

@sutherlandinsurance

Eddie Van Halen was diagnosed with tongue cancer in 2000. Tongue cancer is a type of oropharyngeal cancer, meaning a cancer of the mouth, tongue, or throat which develops in the squamous cells lining the surface of the tongue. Squamous cells are the rapidly shed cells that comprise the outer surface of the epidermis, and the linings of the respiratory and digestive tracts. Tongue cancer often begins in the back third of the tongue at the base which starts in the throat. Presenting with few signs and symptoms, it is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage when the cancer has spread into the lymph nodes in the neck. At least 75% of head and neck cancers, which include oropharyngeal cancer are caused by tobacco and alcohol use. People who use both tobacco and alcohol are at the greatest risk. Some studies suggest the risk of head and neck cancers in heavy drinkers and smokers may be 100 times greater than the risk in people who don’t smoke or drink.

SU T HE RL AN DI NSU R ANCE. C OM | 1. 800.263.103 2

Increasing evidence suggests 70% of oral cancers and specifically oropharyngeal cancers that involve the base of the tongue are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), particularly HPV-16 which is known to cause cervical cancer. In 2001, Eddie Van Halen publicly confirmed his diagnosis with tongue cancer. He underwent resective surgery to remove the cancer, along with roughly a third of his tongue. Although he was declared cancer free in 2002, approximately five years ago doctors confirmed the cancer had returned and spread to his lungs. In 2015, Eddie Van Halen theorized about how he got his cancer: “I used metal picks, they’re brass and copper, which I always held in my mouth in the exact place where I got the tongue cancer” he says. “This is just my own theory, but the doctors say it’s possible.” The Environmental Protection Agency lists no evidence for human cancer incidence connected to copper or the metals in brass, an alloy of copper and zinc. Hypothesis aside, one aspect of Eddie Van Halen’s death is without controversy; he was one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Eddie’s genius is showcased in the virtuosic instrumental Eruption from his 1978 debut album. In a mere 1 minute and 43 seconds, Eddie detonates an unprecedented molten fury rife with lightning-fast licks, ear piercing harmonics, and massive dive bomb effects. The song culminates with a sensory overload of classically influenced and brilliantly phrased two-handed tapped arpeggios. Eddie Van Halen’s ongoing battles with cancer persisted for over a decade. During his final 72 hours, doctors discovered the lung cancer had metastasized to his brain. Eddie Van Halen died in hospital on Tuesday October 6, 2020. Keeping vigil by his side were his wife Janie, his son Wolfgang, his ex-wife Valerie Bertinelli, and his brother Alex. I leave you with an excerpt from the Van Halen song Dreams, “So baby dry your eyes, save all the tears you’ve cried, we belong in a world that must be strong, oh that’s what dreams are made of.” RIP EVH. Submitted by: Dr. Oliver Kent, Scientific Associate and cancer researcher at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. I would like to hear from you. Meet Glenn Burke Glenn has worked in the Aerospace industry for 30 plus years, the last seventeen at Honeywell in Toronto, and after retiring, he and his wife Penny moved to Collingwood three years ago to enjoy a retirement lifestyle. However after spending a lot of those years writing, he couldn’t sit still and continued to write, but only this time, it was to entertain. He has evolved from an Aerospace Engineer writing technical manuals into a humorous short story writer, and has recently published his first book called Mixed Nuts. The book title should give you some idea of the crazy and diverse stories he has conjured up for this publication. The first part of this book starts with memoirs about life growing up in the 60s and 70s and how the innocent age might not have been so innocent after all. The second part then provides some thought provoking ideas about the world, movies, language and some annoyances we’ve encountered along the way. All of these stories are told with a unique sense of humour that you will have to read to believe. He likes to promote his book by saying “If you ready to have your perception challenged, and are ready to have things we take for granted totally dissected and examined, then you’ve come to the right place”. Glenn, uses his unique sense of humour and has taken on the world and challenged the things we all accept as normal, and then takes it apart. So if you are looking for something a little different, something a little amusing, and something that will challenge your senses, this is the book for you. You can find his book at you favourite on-line bookstore, or you can order directly from the publisher at booklocker.com.
