WORKING FROM WORK MAY BE THE NORM FOR SOME

APRIL 2020

A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER

MAKE BEAUTY BEAUTIFUL

As I write this message it is an extremely difficult and trying time for many businesses, families, and individuals dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. With the closing of schools, some businesses and public places, and companies asking people to work from home, you may take comfort in the fact that historically, when other very contagious viruses have taken hold, social distancing measures have proven to be the most effective at slowing the pace of transmission.

UP TO 95% of all its beauty waste is

now being recovered and repurposed by Green Circle Salons.

Interestingly enough, we have been publishing an Emergency Preparedness section for the last three months to help people prepare for the unknown. I was definitely thinking more in terms of a natural disaster, or something along those lines. We have covered items such as: making an Emergency Plan, buying or preparing and Emergency Survival and First Aid Kits, documenting your Emergency Contacts, etc. I hope our readers prepared themselves over the last few months when these were published. If you have not, I suggest you go to our website and download these resources - we have set up a link right from our home page to access them so they are easy to find. If you are more prepared for the “next emergency” then you will not have to rush out to the supermarket, pharmacy, etc. In the case of a natural disaster, you might not have the ability or the time to do so. Please refer to pages 12 and 13 in this issue for information about the Coronavirus on how to prepare, protect yourself and your family. We wish to take a moment to thank all the health-care workers on the front lines. They are the brave ones leading us through this emergency.

Resources that were once considered waste materials such as hair, leftover hair colour, foils, colour tubes and aerosol cans are now being recycled. This helps keep over 1,000,000 lbs of waste out of landfills each year.

Show us how you are making the best of it! Email us your photos (info@georgianlife.ca). At least it is not the dead of winter and we can spend time outside with our family, and I’m sure there is no shortage of yard work and spring clean-up to do! Thank you to everyone who shows kindness and support for one another Now is the time to stay home and make it meaningful. Keep your chin up - stay positive, stay healthy; we will get through this together as a community.

MARKET VOLATILITY Extreme market volatility is often coupled with a global issue such as political unrest, trade concern, economic distress, or growing global health concerns. During these times of increased market volatility, it is so easy to focus on the panic-fuelled headlines. Nevertheless, putting events that affect the markets into perspective is an important responsibility – in good times and bad.

Difficult as it may be, it is important to draw our focus away from the onslaught of catastrophic headlines, and put it where it belongs: (a) on your goals, (b) on your long-term plan for the achievement of your goals, and (c) on your portfolio as the long-term funding medium for that plan. Keep in mind that individuals who are part of large pension plans like OMERS, CPP, HOOPP, or the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, don’t have the ability to call and sell out of stocks at these times of panic. Throughout history, emotional selling and knee-jerk reactions typically do more harm than good. We must be diligent to maintain perspective. Volatility is a normal part of investing. Since January 1, 1998 the S&P has been down more than 2% an average of 10 days per year. In 2008, there were 41 occurrences. Investors often redeem at the worst times. The S&P 500 has fallen 10% from a high 38 times since 1988. After a 10% market decline, the subsequent return is historically positive. History has shown that no matter the severity of the pullback, on average, the subsequent returns are positive. It is important to remain committed to a disciplined investment approach. This means: focusing on long-term objectives and ensuring portfolios are properly structured to deliver your required long-term outcomes. Responses to this volatility might involve rebalancing positions, harvesting tax losses where appropriate and undertaking due diligence by reviewing all holdings to ensure quality. It is a natural human reaction to experience some degree of fear at the direction of current events. The greatest achievement, at times like this, is not to give in to the fear. Ted Yoannou: In Your Corner Ted was unable to provide an article this month, but this one is reprinted from May, 2019

Be a Tiger As Tiger Woods sank his final putt on Sunday at the Masters, he raised his arms in celebration, as if unloading the heavy burden of the past 10 years, and embraced his family and friends. One couldn’t help but reflect on his remarkable life. The meteoric rise and unparalleled domination of 1996 to 2009, first capturing the Masters in 1997 at age 21, winning 71 PGA tournaments, including 14 majors, lifting the game of golf to unprecedented heights, becoming an international sports icon and one of the world’s biggest personalities. Then the crash and fall of 2009 to 2017, with the seeds of that demise first planted by the death of his mentor and life compass, his father Earl, in 2006. Driving into a fire hydrant and tree in November 2009, while fleeing his enraged, golf club wielding wife, the embarrassing sex scandals, collapse of family and marriage, public humiliation, loss of reputation, breakdown of his body with serious career threatening back and leg injuries, dazed and confused on the roadside in a 2017 DUI incident, riddled with and dependent upon painkillers, and the very real possibility he would never golf again. Then the comeback of 2017 to the present. Balanced and stable personal life, strong body, masterful golf game. The unfathomable will and effort required to rehabilitate his emotional life and his back, legs and golf swing represent to me the incredible potential and capabilities of the human body and spirit. From one of the most revered people in America in 1999, to one of the most hated in 2009, to one of the most loved in 2019. We all have it in us to rise and fall and then rise again, Tiger just did it in such a public and extreme fashion, through the deepest valleys and to the highest peaks. And then I thought of my family.

COLLINGWOOD CHAPEL 82 Pine St. 705-445-2651 CREEMORE CHAPEL 182 Mill St. 705-446-2108 www.fawcettfuneralhomes.com

My parents as children, with their young dreams and fears set against the backdrop of war-ravaged Europe in the 1930’s and 1940’s, then making their way as adults in Canada, with many achievements and of course some regrets, and now very ill and elderly, but still getting up each morning and fortunately being cared for with love and dignity. And my wife and kids, with our own triumphs and challenges, joys and sorrows. Our lives as books filled with great characters, fascinating plotlines and the ability to write our own endings. Knowing that pain, sacrifice and suffering are inevitably part of the story, but having faith that it is darkest just before the coming dawn. As I watched with misty eyes (that Sunday afternoon) Tiger Woods hugging his 10 year old son Charlie, my phone rang. It was my 20 year old son calling from university. “Hey Dad, did you watch the Masters?â€? “Yup.â€? “Pretty awesome, eh?â€? “Yup. Do you know the full Tiger story, kid? He was about your age when he first won the Masters. And all that’s happened in his life since then‌â€? (gulp, sniff, deep breath). “Lots of that life drama stuff that you love, I assume.â€? “Yup.â€? “You’re getting emotional, aren’t you Pops?â€? “Yup.â€? “You’re going to write an article about this, aren’t you?â€? “Yup.â€? Spring is here! Get your home & property in tip top shape CHOOSING MATERIALS FOR DECKING When it comes time to map out a deck building plan, you may be unsure as to which deck material will meet your needs. Wood is a versatile and attractive decking material. Some people think that wood is too expensive and requires too much maintenance. In fact, domestic softwoods can be very cost-effective decking options and wood decks retain considerable resale value. In terms of maintenance, choosing a rot-resistant wood can result in less maintenance. Durable woods include cedar and redwood - both species contain tannins and oils that make them naturally resistant to decay, rot and voracious insects. Periodic cleaning and inspection/repairs will be needed, but wood can be much more durable than people may think. Composite decking and its close cousin, plastic lumber, are some of the fastest-growing decking materials on the market. Many products are made from polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride. Some composites will be comprised of recycled plastic and wood fibers to create a weather and stain-resistant material that doesn’t warp, rot or splinter. Composite manufacturers continually experiment with manufacturing processes to duplicate the look of natural wood grain. Homeowners are often drawn to composite decking because such decks require little maintenance. These decks do not need to be sanded, stained or refinished. However, mold and mildew can grow in shady, damp areas, so homeowners must realize that these products are not completely maintenance-free. Aluminum decks are not seen that often, but there are reasons why this decking material is becoming more popular. Power-coated aluminum does not need to be replaced due to rotting, cracking or warped boards. Most planks have interlocking edges that create gap-free, watertight decks. Aluminum also has the advantage of being a very strong but lightweight material. Some people may think that aluminum decks would be hot underfoot, but the material actually stays cooler in the sun because of its heatdissipation properties. For those who have green goals in mind, aluminum is totally recyclable. Various decking materials can meet the look, price point and maintenance level homeowners desire.

EARLY SPRING LANDSCAPING TIPS During the cold months of winter, many people stare longingly out of the window dreaming of spring and time spent outdoors. For those with green thumbs, images of tending to the garden and other aspects of their landscapes no doubt dominate such daydreams. Draw inspiration from those budding crocuses and daffodils pushing through the last remnants of snow and employ these tips to prepare for the upcoming gardening season. • One of the first steps is to apply a preemergent weed killer to get a head start knocking out weeds that can plague the lawn during the growing season. Killing weeds at the roots early on can mean far fewer hassles in spring and summer, and may prevent new generations of weeds from cropping up each year. • While it may be tempting to take a prematurely warm day as a sign that spring is in full force and purchase a bunch of annuals, it’s better to know the last of the possible frost dates (check “The Farmer’s Almanac”); otherwise, you may waste time and money planting flowers or vegetables only to have them zapped by another frosty day.

Specialty cleaners of rugs and upholstery

705-444-4737 wiley1@rogers.com

• Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency — just crumbling when lifting it. Soil that is too muddy after spring thaw can harden, making it difficult for plants to flourish later on. Speak with representatives at a local lawn and garden center about which types of amendments you can add to the soil in your particular area to enrich it.

• Residential • Commericial • Construction • Maintenance

• Fill in bare patches of lawn by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to the bare areas, water, and continue to care for the area until the spot fills in. • Spend a day in the garage or shed tending to the lawn mower and other gardening equipment. Clean all tools and ensure that everything works, repairing parts as needed. • Give outdoor entertaining spaces a good scrubbing, clearing away dirt and grime that may have accumulated over the winter. Use a leaf blower to blow away any leftover leaves. • Check if the front porch, railings or decking need painting and/or staining. Tackle these projects when the weather is cooler so everything will be ready for those peak spring days. • Think about any annuals you might want to plant in the landscape this year that will complement any existing shrubbery or perennials. Come up with a theme so that the entire yard is cohesive. Before homeowners know it, winter is gone and it is time to once again enjoy long days spent outdoors. Get a jump start on spring lawn prep as soon as you can.

KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE AS WELL AS SAVE MONEY AND ENERGY WITH WEATHERIZATION Homeowners know that maintaining a comfortable home can be a lot of work. As one project is completed or addressed, another may pop up. In spite of the hard work that can go into maintaining a home, many homeowners would agree that such efforts are well worth it to feel safe and comfortable inside one’s own home. Weatherization is one of the ways to make a home more comfortable while also saving money and energy. Some weatherization projects may be best left to the professionals, while others can be tackled by homeowners themselves. The following are some projects homeowners can expect to encounter as they weatherize their homes or work with professional weatherization services. • Home energy audit: The purpose of a home energy audit is to give homeowners a complete picture of how they consume energy. Audits can shed light on how much energy is being consumed and if there is anywhere in the home where energy might be going to waste. Audits should be conducted before beginning any weatherization projects. Professional auditors may give advice on which areas of the home should be addressed first, while DIYers who conduct their own audits can make a list of issues before determining where to start.

arcaudits@gmail.com | www.archomeinspections.ca

• Leakage: Homeowners may think leakage only poses a problem in winter, when cold air can creep in through cracks around doors and windows and make residents cold, forcing them to raise the temperature on the thermostat. But leaks can affect comfort levels and energy bills during the summer, too, forcing homeowners to adjust their air conditioners to ensure a home is cool on hot days. Choose a cool, windy day to inspect for drafts around doors and windows. Air leakage can adversely affect indoor air quality and contribute to moisture problems that can affect occupants’ health. • Insulation: A poorly insulated home will cost more to heat in winter and more to keep cool in summer. Heat flows from warmer to cooler until there is no longer a temperature difference, so during winter, heat will flow from heated living spaces to unheated areas of the home, including attics and garages. In summer, heat will flow from the outdoors into the home. Properly insulating a home will decrease this flow of heat, ensuring homeowners aren’t paying to heat rooms they don’t use in winter or paying more to keep rooms cool in summer because heat is flowing in from the exterior of the home. Weatherizing a home is a great way for homeowners to reduce their carbon footprints and save some money.

sneeze and cough into your sleeve

avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth

avoid contact with people who are sick

stay home if you are sick

SOCIAL DISTANCING Everyone should be practicing social distancing to reduce their exposure to other people. Everyone should do their best to avoid close contact with people outside of their immediate families. Close contact includes being within two (2) meters of another person. If you believe you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 symptoms, you should begin to self-monitor for a period of 14 days. This means that, in addition to social distancing, you should track how you feel. You should take your temperature daily and log any other symptoms that develop (e.g., sore throat, new cough). You can share these records with your primary care provider over the phone if you seek assessment services.

HOW TO SELF-ISOLATE Self-isolating means staying at home and avoiding contact with other people to help prevent the spread of disease to others in your home and your community. All persons over 70 years of age and individuals who are immunocompromised are advised to self-isolate for a period of 14 days. This means that you should only leave your home or see other people for essential reasons. Where possible, you should seek services over the phone or internet or ask for help from friends, family or neighbours with essential errands.

CANCER CHAT Hey Georgian Life readers! As you know, genes are encoded by the DNA contained in every cell in your body and control all cellular functions including growth, division, and longevity. Acquisition of mutations in cancer sensitive “hotspots” is a leading cause of cancer. These somatic (acquired) mutations occur during our lifetime from damaged DNA arising from tobacco use, exposure to ultraviolet radiation, and age. Similar to somatic mutations, germline (hereditary) mutations in cancer susceptibility genes in some cases do lead to cancer, such as mutations in BRCA1/2. However, unlike a somatic mutation, a germline mutation is present in every cell from fertilization to embryogenesis to birth and therefore these mutations can have dire effects on development which lead to congenital disorders. Germline mutations in genes encoding proteins that function in the RAS-mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK- pronounced “map kay”) pathway, a pathway dysregulated in cancer, causes disorders referred to as “RASopathies” which include Noonan and Noonan-like syndromes. Noonan syndrome (NS) is an autosomal dominant disorder first described by Jacqueline Noonan, a paediatric cardiologist, in 1962. The clinical features associated with NS include short stature, facial dysmorphism and congenital heart defects. The characteristic facial phenotypes include wideset eyes (hypertelorism), broad forehead, wide nasal base, and low-set posteriorly rotated ears. Many of the patients have developmental delay and intellectual disability. Heart defects are seen in 80% of patients associated primarily with pulmonary valve stenosis but hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of cardiac tissue which leads to heart dysfunction is also common. The phenotypic features of Noonan-like syndromes Costello, cardio-facio-cutaneous (CFC), Legius, neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), and NS with multiple lentigines (NSML, formerly called LEOPARD) share significant clinical overlap with NS including the distinct facial features, developmental delay, and cardiac defects. The RASopathies are disorders associated with gain- or loss-of function mutation in genes encoding proteins in the RAS-MAPK pathway. The RAS-MAPK pathway is an essential signaling cascade critical to cellular function and normal development. In humans, there are multiple RAS genes including H-RAS, K-RAS, and N-RAS family members. RAS proteins are coupled to cell surface receptor activity. Receptor activation by growth factors activates RAS followed by the sequential activation of RAF-MEK-ERK leading to activation of transcription factors which turn on/off genes that control cell proliferation, survival, and differentiation. The RAS-MAPK cascade is tightly regulated at every step. Abnormal activation of the RAS-MAPK pathway is commonly observed in cancer. In 1994, genetic analysis of a large family with NS definitively established the first NS locus. In 2001, it was determined that mutations in PTPN11 (encodes a protein called SHP-2) contained in the NS locus caused NS. SHP-2 is a protein that regulates cell signaling through the MAPK pathway. Gain-of-function mutations in PTPN11 have been identified in approximately 50% of NS patients and are found in acute myeloid leukemia. Germline mutations in K-RAS and N-RAS, as well as SOS1 (an activator of RAS), and RAF1 (one of the signaling proteins in the MAPK cascade) have also been identified to cause NS. Germline mutations in H-RAS have been identified in patients with Costello syndrome and mutations in K-RAS, BRAF (a family member of RAF1), and MAP2K1/2 (the genes which encode MEK1 and MEK2) have been identified in patients with CFC syndrome. NF1 syndrome has been found to be caused by loss-of-function mutation in the NF1 gene which is a negative regulator of RAS. These NS mutants are believed to cause the syndromes primarily, if not exclusively, by potentiating signaling through the RAS-MAPK pathway. Although individually these syndromes are rare, collectively the RASopathies are among the most common genetic conditions in humans. For more information visit the RASopathies Network online. Their mission is to advance research of the RASopathies by bringing together families, clinicians and scientists. ON THE ROAD AUTO REPAIR & SERVICE

THE IMPORTANCE OF ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

CALL US TODAY: 705-446-3480

Owning a car is a big responsibility. Drivers who plan to keep their vehicles for the long haul must emphasize maintenance if they want to keep adding miles to their odometers. In fact, the automotive information site CarAdvice says that routine maintenance may be the most important thing drivers can do for their vehicles.

Elmvale’s Trusted Auto Repair Shop for Four Decades

A vehicle needs consistent care if it is to run efficiently. Maintenance also reduces the risk of roadside breakdowns and costly repairs. Here’s a look at some of the benefits of staying on top of maintenance.

• Saves money: Even though maintenance costs money, sticking to a consistent maintenance schedule can save big bucks in the long run. For example, the cost of rotating and aligning tires is considerably less than repairing a car after a major blowout and paying for a tow and tire replacement. • Improves performance & efficiency: Routine maintenance includes oil changes, filter changes and fluid top-offs. Such tasks keep engines running smoothly. Ignoring this routine maintenance can put engines in jeopardy of breaking down and adversely affect vehicle performance, diminishing fuel economy and leading to a sluggish ride.

• Keeps compliance: Vehicles covered under manufacturer’s warranties typically need to be maintained in adherence to factory-recommended maintenance schedules. This ensures that the vehicle is in compliance and will be covered in the event of a warranty claim. Routine vehicle maintenance is important for a variety of reasons. Drivers can work with a trusted and reliable mechanic to develop a schedule that keeps their cars and trucks on the road.

DRIVE SAFE THESE BUSINESSES CAN HELP

3 TIPS TO DRIVE MORE EFFICIENTLY Unlicensed drivers learning to drive are often taught the benefits of defensive driving. Safety is often the focus of such lessons, but the benefits of driving safely and efficiently extend far beyond safety. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by roughly 15 to 30 percent at highway speeds. In addition, a 2017 study from researchers at the DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory found that aggressive driving can contribute to a reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 40 percent in stop-and-go traffic.

FAST FRIENDLY SERVICE

Speeding as well as rapid acceleration and braking are hallmarks of aggressive driving, and each of these habits puts drivers, their passengers and other motorists at risk of accident and injury. By taking these steps to drive more efficiently, drivers can save money and potentially even lives. • Avoid rooftop cargo Rooftop cargo units can be beneficial for family vacations or other extended getaways. But using rooftop cargo boxes as traveling storage units for items you don’t need on a daily basis or simply keeping empty units attached to vehicle roofs compromises fuel efficiency. Rooftop cargo bins increase the aerodynamic drag on vehicles, forcing them to burn more fuel than they would need to burn while moving without anything attached to the roof. DOE estimates suggest that large, blunt rooftop cargo boxes can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 25 percent when a vehicle is moving at speeds between 65 and 75 miles per hour.

Open Monday–Friday: 8am–5pm 4360 County Rd. 124, Collingwood • 705-445-2782

Trunks are not closets, so resist the temptation to use them to store golf clubs and other items that are better stored in a house or garage. Research has indicated that an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle can reduce gas mileage by about one percent. Because that figure is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle’s weight, drivers of small vehicles may find using their trunks as closets to be especially costly and inefficient. • Use cruise control when possible.

Efficient driving is safe, cost-effective and ecofriendly. With some simple strategies, drivers can do their part to protect the planet and make roads safer, all while saving money.

Driving is not often categorized as an ecofriendly activity. But, driving is often the most reliable transportation option for people who live outside of cities or in areas without accessible public transportation. Eco-friendly motorists who need to drive can employ various strategies to reduce their carbon footprints while behind the wheel. • Plan trips in advance. In lieu of making several separate trips in a vehicle, plan ahead and use car trips to accomplish more than one goal. For example, resolve to do some grocery shopping on your way home from the gym, or order takeout when leaving your office so you won’t have to go back out to pick up dinner after arriving home. Combining tasks into a single car trip is a more efficient use of time and fuel. • Adhere to vehicle maintenance recommendations. Auto manufacturers recommend vehicles be taken in for routine maintenance at certain intervals. Some manufacturers may recommend drivers have their vehicles’ oil changed every 3,000 miles, while others may advise tires be rotated every 5,000 miles. Drivers should learn these guidelines and adhere to them, as sticking to maintenance schedules can help vehicles operate more smoothly and efficiently, conserving fuel as a result. • Become an eco-conscious car buyer. When buying their cars, many motorists choose the vehicle they can afford or a car or truck they have long wanted to drive. But, the biggest or prettiest vehicle may not be the most practical, especially for drivers who want to reduce their carbon footprints. Drivers who want their driving to be as eco-friendly as possible should choose vehicle models that suit their needs and driving habits. If the bulk of your driving is commuting alone to work, then a small, fuelefficient vehicle, may be more eco-friendly and practical than a large SUV. Investigate electric cars and hybrid models to determine if either option is suited to your driving habits.

• Don’t treat your trunk like a closet.

Cruise control makes it possible for vehicles to maintain constant speeds. That helps drivers ensure they are always obeying the speed limit, and it keeps cars from the constant acceleration and deceleration that wastes fuel.

• Carpool to work. Working professionals who work in large office complexes can no doubt find neighbours with whom they can carpool. Begin by posing a carpool to coworkers, expanding your search to nearby businesses if coworkers are lukewarm to the idea. Carpools not only save fuel, but also can be a great for drivers to extend the life expectancies of their vehicles.

FEATURE PET: HOWIE Hi everyone! My name is Howie and boy, do I ever have a story for you... The humans here talk about this thing called “bad luck” and I guess I’ve sure had a lot of it. If you can believe it, when I was found I actually had a piece of stick right in between my big, beautiful brown eyes. The doctor quickly got to work trying to fix me up, but I ended up losing my eye because of it. That’s okay though, I feel SO much better now! Turns out I also have this silly thing called a Heartworm. I’m on a great treatment plan to make sure it goes away, so no worries there either, but I will need to go home with humans who are able to follow doc’s orders and help me with my medication and recovery time. Then, just as everyone was sure I was on the mend, I started limping a bit...and after some xrays, guess what, I needed another surgery!!! Turns out one of my hips was in pretty bad shape, so that needed to be fixed, too. So yeah, that bad luck thing, eh? But guess what? Through all these injuries and medications and treatments, I’ve been SUCH a good boy but because of all these health challenges, I haven’t been able to do much playing. It can get very frustrating sometimes! Ohhhh I can’t wait to be able to play again! For right now though, I’m just a big, young, super sweet boy who loves to snuggle in for a good cuddle. Do you think you’ve got room in your heart and home for a big ole’ guy like me? I hope you’ll consider coming to meet me, so I can show you what a good dog I am! I can’t wait to meet you and look forward to starting my new life with my new family soon. Wags and kisses, Howie *If you are interested in meeting me, please visit our main adoptions page (https://www.gths.ca/ animals-for-adoption/) for instructions on our modified adoption process by appointment.

PET PANTRY & EMERGENCY BOARDING In an effort to help minimize the impact of Ontario’s current state of emergency on members of the South Georgian Bay Community, the Georgian Triangle Humane Society (GTHS) will continue offering both its Pet Pantry and Emergency Board services as long as their resources allow.

Pet Pantry

The GTHS operates a pet food bank for pet owners who have come across challenging times and require assistance with keeping pets fed. Time and time again we see pet owners prioritizing pet food over food for themselves; the GTHS strives to alleviate the need for pet owners to choose between providing proper nourishment for their pets or themselves. Given these uncertain times, the GTHS will be offering Pet Pantry services, despite the fact that the GTHS Animal Centre remains temporary closed to the public. Should you require use of Pet Pantry services, please call (705) 445-5204 ext. 0. A GTHS team member will connect with you and schedule delivery of pet food right to your door. This service is strictly confidential. In order to help replenish supplies, the GTHS has placed a tote outside of the GTHS Animal Centre (549 Tenth Line, Collingwood) for anyone who would like to donate unopened dog food, cat food and litter to this program.

Emergency Board

The GTHS will offer short term housing for the pets of people in crisis through the Emergency Boarding Program. This is a last resort program for individuals experiencing crisis and are unable to care for their animals temporarily and is offered within the limits of available resources. People who are fleeing domestic violence, homeless because of a disaster such as flooding or fire, or those who have suffered a medical emergency or are entering a recovery program or rehab center would qualify for this service. To learn more about the Emergency Board Program, visit https://www.gths.ca/services/petretention-program/. If you or someone you know are in need of pet emergency boarding, please contact the GTHS at 705-445-5204 ext. 0

SINGLE-SIDED DEAFNESS / UNILATERAL HEARING LOSS

Choose the mortgage solution that’s right for YOU!

Most of the time people present with a similar hearing loss in both ears. When the hearing loss is different on each side, we call that type of loss asymmetric. When one ear does not hear and the other ear hears normally, a unilateral hearing loss exists. This is referred to as single-sided deafness (SSD).

CROS systems have been shown to reduce listening effort, improve sound localization, and provide better speech understanding. The newest devices provide streaming to multiple devices, such as TV streamers, cell phones, and more. CROS systems are offered at various performance levels and price points. The affects of SSD vary from individual to individual; however, those with SSD often have difficulty hearing when there is background noise and struggle to localize a sound (determining where a sound is coming from). Often the sound is perceived as coming from the side with the better hearing, which is often incorrect. Other common complaints include reduced spatial awareness and an impaired understanding of speech. Individuals with SSD may not participate in social activities or may have insecurities with regards to conversation. Fortunately, there are options for treating SSD. One popular option is a hearing aid specific to SSD known as a CROS system. CROS stands for Contralateral Routing of Signals. A transmitter, which acts as a microphone, is placed on the deaf ear. It sends a signal to the receiving ear (receiver), which is a normal, compatible hearing aid. Current CROS systems are wireless, which means the transmitter sends the signal (sound) to the receiver through various means, such as a near-field magnetic induction (NFMI). If the better hearing ear does have a degree of hearing loss, the receiving hearing aid can also amplify sound for that ear, while simultaneously receiving the signal from the transmitting (deaf) ear. This is known as a BiCROS system.

There are many reasons why single-sided deafness can occur. It may be congenital, meaning the person was born that way. Another cause may be due to a virus. This can happen at any time from childhood to adulthood. It can come on suddenly without warning. Single-sided deafness can also arise from a tumour or growth on the acoustic nerve or if there is damage to the nerve.
