APRIL 2021

A note for April from the Publisher We are just past one year into the global pandemic that upended our day-to-day lives, and I think it’s worthwhile to reflect on what we’ve been through. While the last year has been marked by social, financial, health and community challenges that most of us never expected, it’s also been a year of great learning and change. I’ve been inspired time and again by the creativity and resiliency of people in our communities. Easter was one of the first major holidays to be celebrated differently in 2020. This year I hope you embraced some old and new traditions to celebrate in the era of social distancing. Maybe you took brunch outside, watched mass virtually, and devoured copious amounts of chocolate. When flowers bloom, temperatures rise, and happy chatter can be heard from the trees, it can only mean one thing: spring is in the air! A new Weather Network forecast reveals that the next few months are expected to bring warmer weather compared to many of the previous spring seasons Ontario has seen over the past several years. Shake off the winter blues and head outside to enjoy all of the fantastic things our area has to offer. We’re so truly blessed to live in such a beautiful spot. We have many contests coming up for spring and summer, be sure to check out our contest page on our website www.georgianlife.ca. Thank you to the businesses that are sponsoring them to offer up some amazing local prizes! Please let me know of any events that are coming up or if you know of an organization that’s doing great things and should be recognized for its efforts. Just send me an email: info@georgianlifemedia.ca and I will consider it for an upcoming issue.

BRICK HOUSE FOLLOWS ALL HEALTH AND SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR COVID-19 WHEN INSPECTING A PROPERTY

Darcy MacLeod, Owner of Brick House Home Inspection Services is a Professional, Experienced Inspector with over 1000 home inspections under her “Tool Belt”! Purchasing a home can be very stressful. Our inspection reports are clear and concise, providing relevant information regarding any deficiencies noted during an inspection in order to help the client make “an educated purchasing decision.”

WINNER!

Covid-19 has brought dramatic changes to the real estate market. Purchasers have found themselves in multiple offer situations and often purchase a home without having a home inspection. We suggest that the home buyer contact us for a “Post Purchase” home inspection upon possession. The client will gain valuable information on the current condition of the home and any urgent improvements that should be performed. Having recently completed the Carson Dunlop Weldon Commercial Building Inspection program, an Industrial, Commercial and Institutional Division has been added to the company. “You were prompt, personable, thorough, direct, and I loved your energy. I also really appreciated your openness to describing everything as you went and giving tips and advice. You made it much less overwhelming! Thank you.” - V.Z., Collingwood ON

Darcy is a Registered Home Inspector (RHI), Commercial Building Inspector (CBI), New Construction Inspector (NCI), a Certified Master Inspector (CIMI) and WETT Certified (wood-burning systems). Darcy is a member of the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (OAHI), the Canadian Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA), National Women in Roofing (NWIR), the International Institute Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) and the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI).

BUSINESS PROFILE:

Dadswell Denture Clinic is a full-service denture provider specializing in complete dentures, partial dentures, implant-retained dentures, and immediate dentures. Originally from Scarborough owner, Kim Dadswell graduated in 1996 with Honours from George Brown College, where she studied Denturism. After graduating, Kim moved to Collingwood and was a Denturist Associate at the Reekie Clinic on Pine St. In 1998 she purchased the clinic and has been practicing at the same location independently as Dadswell Denture Clinic.

Most of the patients at Dadswell are adults, although dentures are for anybody missing one or more of their teeth. They offer various services and types of dentures to satisfy each patient’s specific requirements Complete & Partial Dentures, Flexible Partials, Immediate Dentures, Implant Retained Dentures, 3D Digital Dentures, Relines, Repairs, Teeth Whitening, Cleaning Products, and Mouthguards. Patients feel very comfortable with our friendly, knowledgeable staff. We are professional and treat everyone with respect by listening to their needs. We offer complimentary consultations with no obligations and provide written estimates to each patient. We provide quality products and fair pricing and work closely with local dentists to provide patients with the best treatment for them. Our patients are wonderful and loyal. I have patients that continue to book appointments with us regularly since I first started. Every day is a new challenge. Some patients might only be missing one tooth, whereas another patient might not have any teeth. Everyone has different needs and requirements. Upon examination, I must then determine the best possible treatment plan for them.”

“I chose to be a Denturist because I have a creative outlet, and I enjoy helping others. Dentures replace missing teeth due to an injury, tooth decay, or gum disease and help improve the digestive system. Denturism allows me to make dentures for patients so that they can eat and speak with confidence as well as have a beautiful smile.” As a Denturist, Kim is constantly keeping up-to-date with ever-changing technology and is continuously furthering her education and training by attending seminars, additional courses, and workshops to perfect and master the advanced techniques she uses daily in her practice. She is determined to give her patients the best fitting dentures and services. A big part of this is updating and upgrading the techniques, materials, and equipment used at the clinic. At Dadswell Denture Clinic, they have integrated digital dentures into their process, creating the highest quality dentures in their modern in-house lab. Their specialty is making personalized custom-fitted dentures. Having a lab on the premises also allows for repairs and relines as a same-day service without sending them out. This service is cost-effective for patients, and they appreciate having their dentures back promptly.

Like most businesses, Covid 19 has affected Dadswell Denture Clinic in many ways. There is a lot of extra work and additional expenses. Their schedule is modified to allow 15 minutes between patients for extra cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and social distancing. Thus, cutting the number of patients seen by 1/2 each day. Each patient is called the day before their appointment for prescreening of Covid, upon arrival all patients must always wear a mask (excluded during their oral exam) and sanitize their hands. Staff must take their temperature, do another screening, scan it in the computer, and ask patients to perform an oral rinse before having the exam. Walk-ins are no longer accepted as it is now by appointment only. Only the patient is allowed in the clinic unless they require a caregiver. They have to purchase extra sanitizer, cleaning products, PPE, including masks, gowns, gloves, shields, and goggles for all staff, increase the number of Surgically Clean Air Units in the clinic, and put up plexiglass at reception.

Kim has two incredible staff who are committed, enthusiastic, and go above and beyond to help keep everything running smoothly at the clinic. Sarah is the Office Assistant; her kind and gentle nature ensure that patients feel welcomed and comfortable at the clinic. Cindy is the Office Manager; she enjoys interacting with patients and strives to ensure that every visit is positive.

Most Denturists’ fees are covered by dental plans, Veterans Affairs, Social Services, NIHB and other private insurance companies. Replacing your natural teeth is more than trusting someone with your smile.

When asked what she enjoys the most about her job Kim replied, “I enjoy seeing the patient’s reaction after I have inserted their new dentures. I always take a ‘Before’ and ‘After’ picture of every patient. Sometimes it’s like a mini-makeover, and they get so excited. We see tears of joy in the clinic, and I get lots of hugs! We care about every patient!”

Request an appointment for a free consultation to discuss a treatment plan for you to let your smile shine through!

Ted Yoannou: In Your Corner One Innocent Person

25% OFF

“It is better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent person suffer.” Known as Blackstone’s Ratio, expressed by the English jurist William Blackstone in the 1760’s, this idea of protecting and safeguarding an innocent person, even at the expense of many guilty people going free, is a concept rooted deep within our legal system. Other legal commentators have used numbers other than “ten”, in terms of how many guilty people should go free to safeguard one innocent person. Benjamin Franklin referred to “one hundred persons,” and the Jewish legal theorist Moses Maimonides wrote in the 1100’s, “it is better and more satisfactory to acquit a thousand guilty persons than to put a single innocent one to death.”

all Diamond Jewellery

I think I can safely assume that I speak on behalf of all criminal defence lawyers when I say... we need more judges like Maimonides! Or, perhaps more fitting in this month of Easter, we defence lawyers dream of judges like Jesus, who said to the mob looking to lynch the woman accused of adultery, “He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her.” One by one, the mob slinked away as they considered their own misdeeds, and Jesus said to the woman, “go and sin no more.” In criminal law cases, Blackstone’s Ratio is intertwined with the concepts of the presumption of innocence and proof beyond a reasonable doubt. To be found guilty of a criminal offence, the proof needs to be more than just a balance of probabilities (51%), which is the standard applied in civil law matters. And, the proof needs to be more than just that the accused is probably guilty.

designed by Drobotdean - Freepik.com

However, it does not have to be proof to absolute certainty (100%), although the actual standard leans much closer to 100% than it does to 51%. A United States case describes the reasonable doubt analysis as follows: It is not required that the government prove guilt beyond all possible doubt. The test is one of reasonable doubt. Reasonable doubt is a doubt based upon reason and common sense - the kind of doubt that would make a reasonable person hesitate to act. Therefore, proof beyond a reasonable doubt must be proof of such a convincing character that a reasonable person would not hesitate to rely and act upon it in the most important of his own affairs.

And interestingly, former US Vice President Cheney commented on the controversial torture techniques used by the CIA on suspected terrorists, up to 25% who were later proven to be innocent, “I’m more concerned with bad guys who got out and released than I am with a few that in fact were innocent.”

st 31

Disturbingly, many authoritarian states take the exact opposite view to Blackstone’s Ratio. From Bismarck to Pol Pot to Communist China, the concept has been turned upside down, “better to kill ten innocent people than let a guilty person escape.”

Hmm. Let’s leave the last word on this topic to the wise philosopher who answered, when asked whether it’s better that ten guilty people go free so long as one innocent person does not suffer, “better for who?”

Virtual Meetings and Hearing Loss

Lynne McBride

COVID-19 has redefined how we interact, and virtual meetings have become the new normal.

Accredited Senior Agent Sales Representative

These virtual platforms are convenient and popular as people use them to engage with others. However, something that is often overlooked is how accessible they are for people with hearing loss. Being mindful of hearing loss, making simple changes, and improving hearing accessibility when using virtual platforms can significantly impact.

705-443-7247 519-507-2121 lynne.mcbride@century21.ca www.c21.ca/lynne.mcbride

Outlined below are ways to improve hearing accessibility. Plan ahead. Ask if there are any requests for specific accessibility needs. If possible, record live meetings so that you or others can review them later. Allow attendees to submit questions in advance. Also, provide materials, meeting agendas, and documents in accessible formats before the meeting.

Real Estate is not just my job - It's My Passion!

Each office is independently owned and operated.

Use headphones with a microphone. Most computer microphones do not clearly pick-up a user’s voice, whereas a mic integrated into headphones or the cord will be closer to the speaker’s voice. A flexible boom-mic provides great sound clarity and is positioned so that it is always near the voice. Also, noise-cancelling headphones may make it easier to hear and concentrate during a meeting if you are in a busy environment. Reduce background noise & optimize the listening environment. Whether your meeting is at home or work, background noise can distract and make communication more challenging. Muting all attendees except those who are speaking can be helpful. Mute your phone/messaging apps to avoid distractions as well. Make sure you are in a well-lit room with your face clearly visible. Use captions. Captions for video and real-time translation are an important way to improve hearing access during virtual meetings. Captions are useful for everyone, not just those with hearing loss. Improve communication skills. In a virtual meeting environment, it may be difficult to recognize if someone has a hearing loss. Some simple changes can make a big difference. For example, avoid covering your mouth and have the speaker’s face visible to enable speech reading. Make sure that only one person talks at a time during the meeting. Provide notes and/or transcripts after the meeting. Ask people to state their names every time they speak, so captioners and attendees know who is speaking. Also, speak clearly and at a normal pace and volume.

Rotarians make Easter sweet For several years members of the Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach have gathered together in March to buy, pack and distribute Easter hampers to local people in need, in concert with The Ministerial Food Bank. Covid-19 has not put a damper on providing for these families. This year, with the proceeds of their annual corvette lottery, the organization purchased $10,000 in gift cards to local grocery stores for food bank clients to purchase an Easter dinner and added a few chocolate eggs and bunnies. Cancer Chat Cancer is a chronic disease caused by damaged cells that arise from and invade the tissues of our own bodies. Although there is currently no cure for cancer, early detection and treatment significantly improves outcome. Definitively, ease of resection of a primary site is associated with improved overall survival. After finding suspicious nodules in her jaw in 2015, Joy Steele of Wasaga Beach maintains “there is no good cancer” as she began a daily battle with the aftermath of surgical removal of her thyroid. The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland in the throat that produces hormones to regulate healthy heart rate, body temperature, and metabolism. There are multiple types of thyroid cancer that arise from malignant cells in the tissues of the thyroid gland. Age and gender affect the risk. There is a hereditary component to thyroid cancer but the genetic basis for these cancers is not clearly defined. Exposure to radiation, for example radiation therapy used to treat childhood cancers such as lymphoma and neuroblastoma also promotes increased risk. Interestingly before the 1960s, low doses of radiation were used for treating ailments like acne, fungus infections of the scalp, or enlarged tonsils or adenoids. Years later, people exposed to such treatments faced a higher risk of thyroid cancers. In 2015, Joy discovered a lump below her jaw. Ultrasound revealed two nodules on each side of the thyroid that were subsequently removed due to their size and Joy’s history of familial cancer. Although her biopsy was inconclusive, Joy’s older sister had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer ten years earlier. Pathology established Joy had follicular thyroid cancer, an aggressive type of thyroid cancer, especially in woman which accounts for ~15% of thyroid cancer diagnosis. Although thyroid cancer grows slowly which permits increased time for treatment, these cancers are highly metastatic; therefore, thyroid removal is the primary method of treatment. Joy proclaims, “People tell me, at least you had the good cancer which is easily removed.” She continues, “But there is no ‘good cancer’. It is cancer and it puts my life at risk.” Resection of the tumor is unarguably positive, but although on one hand her cancer has been removed,

on the other hand Joy is left without essential thyroid function. Following surgery to remove her tumors, Joy has struggled with chronic fatigue and muscle pain due to the loss of thyroid hormones. Currently, Joy is on a poorly optimized and inconsistent dosing regimen of a synthetic thyroid medication to help support healthy bodily functions, but unlike her sister she does not respond well. Due to her familial history of cancer, Joy underwent genetic counselling at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) where it was determined she carries a mutation in a gene called Fanconi anemia complementation group C (FANCC). Mutation in FANCC is one of many genes that causes a rare recessive disorder called Fanconi anemia (FA) characterized by a plethora of symptoms affecting bone marrow, skin, kidney and digestion. Mutant FANCC carriers have a greatly increased risk of cancer due to defective mechanisms of DNA repair resulting in accumulation of genetic mutations. Although thyroid cancer is unusual in FA, endocrine problems are common and FA syndrome presents with 70-80% risk of endocrine abnormalities including thyroid nodules. Thyroid nodules can be firm mimicking a tumor diagnosis and although they are caused by abnormal growth of thyroid cells they are usually not cancer. However, increasing evidence suggests that mutations in FA genes including FANCC does increase lifelong risk for cancer, especially invasive ductal breast carcinoma. Based on her sister’s diagnosis with breast cancer in 2016, Joy has recently been admitted to the Ontario high-risk breast cancer screening program at the PMH. Encouraged to give back, in 2019 Joy participated in a Dear World event while attending a conference in Toronto. Dear World (dearworld.com) provides an opportunity for people to tell and share their stories to build a culture of authenticity, inclusivity and purpose. Joy says, “It is an experience I hope everyone gets a chance to have” as she tells her story as a force for good. The idea is to think about words that mean something to you and take a photo with the words marked on your body. Frustrated by the ignorance and severity surrounding her own cancer diagnosis, Joy’s message: “there is no good cancer”. How ergonomic tools can help gardeners

We are giving away 5 x $50 gift cards (to local businesses) to anyone who brings us this ad and gets a mortgage through us!

Gardening is a rewarding activity found to provide a host of benefits beyond ensuring readily available access to fresh fruits, vegetables, and aweinspiring blooms.

Many gardening tasks qualify as light to moderate exercise, which means raking the leaves and cutting the grass can be just as beneficial as cardiovascular activities like brisk walking or jogging. Gardeners have a host of tools at their disposal to help turn their lawns and gardens into awe-inspiring landscapes. Among those options are ergonomic tools. Ergonomic tools can benefit gardeners of all ages, but they may prove especially valuable for aging men and women.

PRINCIPAL BROKER

How ergonomic tools differ from traditional gardening tools Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to ensure that using them has as little effect on the body as possible. Ergonomic tools align with how a person naturally moves his or her body, which can reduce the likelihood that gardeners will suffer any strains or sprains while gardening or experience any aches and pains after a day spent tending to their landscapes. Choosing the right tools Gardeners will know they have chosen the right ergonomic gardening tool for the job when they do not have to adapt the tool. Ergonomic tools should match gardeners’ heights, fit their grip, and feel comfortable when in use. Specific benefits of ergonomic tools Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to reduce stress on the body while performing various tasks. Gardeners know that aches and pains can add up after a day spent kneeling in the garden, raking soil, and carrying supplies from a shed or garage around the property. Ergonomic tools do more than just reduce gardeners’ risk of injury.

Spring Arrangements

• Ergonomic tools increase efficiency. Wasted motions are less likely when using ergonomic tools, allowing gardeners to get more done in the same amount of time. Ergonomic tools are designed to work with the body, gardeners likely won’t need to take breaks due to aches and pains, making it easier to be more efficient when working in the garden. • Ergonomic tools increase gardeners’ capabilities. The principles behind ergonomics keep gardeners using the tools in natural positions. That means gardeners won’t lose power to bending and twisting, enabling them to do more in the garden than they might be able to do when using nonergonomic tools. Gardening is a rewarding and beneficial activity. The right ergonomic tools for the job can enhance those benefits and make gardening even more enjoyable.

How to keep your child’s closet organized When you’re a parent, it’s challenging enough to find time to keep your own space organized, let alone your child’s. Especially when it comes to the closet, where clothes, shoes, and toys always somehow end up piled high in haphazard stacks, attempting to maintain some order of cleanliness can be frustrating.

look for whatever they need. You can label everything with a category name, picture, or even colour code!

The truth is, if you spend some extra time and energy setting up a kidfriendly closet organization system now, you can save a lot of headache in the future and start teaching your kids how to stay tidy on their own. Start with these organization hacks to help you and your child make the most of their closet!

Personalize their closet to them. Kids are more likely to keep their closet organized if it feels like their own personal space. Designing and decorating a custom closet together will get them excited and make them want to put in the effort to make it look nice. All it takes is something small, like painting the walls or door their favourite colour or hanging a special poster. Let them choose cool hangers or drawer handles and add a few unique decorations or accessories that reflect their personality.

Provide easy access. The easiest way to maintain an organized system in your kid’s closet is with their help! Set things up so that children can easily grab and return things to their proper place in the closet. Double rods are a great way to maximize hanging space and keep favorite and mostused clothing at their level. Underneath, use drawers, shelving, bins, and cubbies to store essentials like shoes, socks, and underwear that can easily be reached. Group and label items. When items are quick and easy for your child to find, they’re much less likely to rip apart their closet searching for something. Organize like items together (i.e. pants on this side, shirts on that side) and label drawers, shelves, and other storage pieces clearly, so they know exactly where to

Plant the trees that suit your needs It is always a good time to plan to plant trees under Forests Ontario’s 50 Million Tree Program. Forests Ontario will connect you with a planting partner who will visit your property. They’ll work with you to choose the right trees for your site. There are four main types of planting: AFFORESTATION - How productive is a farm field, planted in crops? In some marginal fields, cleared generations ago for agriculture, the soil is poor, rocky, or dry, meaning that the cost of fertilizer, seed, fuel and time can add up to more than you earn from the crops. In these conditions, it is often best to convert this land back to forest. Foresters call this afforestation – planting trees on a large scale where there have been none for a long time. You can plant a large new forest on your property with a variety of native species. The planting partner that Forests Ontario sends your way will ensure the right trees go in the right places to maximize their odds of survival. Afforestation is a way of ‘jump starting’ a new forest. You could, of course, just leave the field alone to return to forest on its own, but this comes with potential issues. Invasive species, such as Buckthorn and Dog-Strangling Vine, can establish over time. Also, you may have to wait quite a while. A well-established grass field can maintain itself for several decades before any trees show up. To jumpstart the process, plant trees where and when you want them. Some landowners get tired of mowing lawns every year. With increasing drought, who wants to look at brown, dry grass? Plant trees instead to avoid this problem. A forest is less work than a lawn and provides incredible biodiversity to your property. Increasing shade around your house will lower your cooling bills in summer. Plus, you can leave a forest legacy for your family. As another added bonus, planting a forest could save money on your taxes under the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program. If your total forested area is above four hectares, you can save 75 per cent or more in property taxes on your forested property.

RIPARIAN BUFFER - You may have a pond, a creek, or a wetland on your property. When you mow right to the edge of the water, and a heavy rainfall comes, it sends sediment into the water. This decreases the depth of water, causing warming and algae blooms which hurt fish and impacts wildlife living nearby.

75 45th St. S., Wasaga Beach, ON

Creeks, ponds and streams need buffers of trees and plants that stabilize their banks, reduce soil erosion and sedimentation, and keep their water cool. Riparian buffers minimize the runoff into creeks, rivers, ponds, lakes or wetlands. The trees also provide a home for wildlife that thrive near the water, from ducks to dragonflies. Wider buffers support more wildlife.

705-422-1250

CTWasagaBeach

WINDBREAK - Windbreaks have many uses. Rows of trees shade livestock, reduce soil erosion, increase privacy, reduce noise from nearby roads, and reduce snow drifting into driveways in the winter. A row of trees can lower your cost for heating in winter and air conditioning in summer. Windbreaks double as wildlife corridors: in agricultural areas where there are not many trees, rows of trees connect fragmented woodlots, helping mammals and birds to move and thrive. RESTORATION - A forest is like any dynamic and living system: from time to time, it will face illness. Red Pine pocket decline, a disease that attacks the roots, can force a landowner to cut down part of a plantation. White Pine Weevil and White Pine Blister Rust are other pathogens that strike the forest. How should you respond to these illnesses reducing your forest cover? Our planting partners can help you restore the lost trees. You may have a woodlot dominated by ash, and then devastated by the Emerald Ash Borer. Cut the ash for firewood, then replant for the future. Perhaps your forest has been afflicted by a natural disaster like ice storms or downburst? You can restore the forest with underplanting, bringing up a new generation under the trees that got damaged. Some people don’t thin their plantation soon enough and end up with little diversity. You can incorporate some restoration planting in a thinned plantation as well to ensure a healthy forest stand into the future. A buyer’s guide to home air conditioning systems Few experiences provide as much relief as walking into a cool room on a hot summer day. Air conditioning systems make such experiences possible, and a homeowners’ decision regarding which one to install in their homes is significant. In its simplest form, an air conditioner transfers heat and humidity from the home to the outside while cooling and circulating the inside air to provide a comfortable environment. Large strides have been made in air conditioner efficiency in recent years. As a result, many homeowners purchase a new air conditioner not just for a more comfortable home environment and quieter operation, but to reduce their electricity bills. Homeowners may not know where to begin with finding the right air conditioning system for their home. According to the Air-Conditioning, Heating, & Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), the best systems provide steady, dependable performance for many years when sized correctly for the home. Correct installation and routine maintenance also can ensure homeowners’ air conditioning systems withstand the test of time. When shopping for new air conditioning systems, consider a host of factors to ensure you get the best match. The home’s age, the number and quality of its windows, how well it’s insulated, the number of stories it has, and its square footage are among the factors to consider. Homeowners can benefit from working with trained technicians who can investigate each of these factors and recommend the correct system. The AHRI recommends homeowners ask a technician to perform an analysis to help choose their home’s perfect system.

Relax, leave the cleaning to us!

Energy efficiency is an important consideration when purchasing a new air conditioner for a home. An energy-efficient unit can help homeowners save considerable amounts of money. A unit that adequately cools a home without consuming a lot of costly electricity should be every homeowner’s goal. Air conditioner efficiency is rated by the unit’s Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). The higher the number, the greater the efficiency and the less it costs to operate the system. This rating is noted on the Energy Guide® label on each unit, and the higher the number, the more efficient the unit.

Three basic types of home air conditioners are typically used in Canada. There are “central” or “split” air conditioning systems that are built into the home, combined with a “forced air” heating system. There are ductless or “mini-split” air conditioners typically used in homes that do not have furnace ductwork, such as those equipped with a boiler or baseboard electric heat. And then there are “room air conditioners” that typically fit into a window opening. These are inexpensive, but they can be noisy, inefficient, and provide uneven cooling. If you are having air conditioning installed in a home that doesn’t currently have it, it is important to know the alternatives.

SPLIT SYSTEM - The actual air conditioner, or “condensing unit,” is located outside the home, typically on a concrete pad/patio stone or mounted on brackets to the wall of the house. Temperature is typically controlled by a dual-purpose heating/cooling thermostat. Programmable thermostats allow the homeowner to pre-set the air conditioning to cool the home when people are active in the home and let it warm when the house is vacant can help reduce cooling costs. MINI-SPLIT SYSTEMS - Like the split system, the mini-split has an outdoor condensing unit that removes heat from refrigerant coming back through refrigerant lines and sends cooled refrigerant back into the home. However, the indoor unit is self-contained with its own fan to distribute the cooled air. The indoor unit is typically attached to the ceiling or high on a wall and is often controlled with a remote. HI-VELOCITY SYSTEMS - These compact units, which often combine heating and air conditioning, fit into a small space like a closet or an attic and use small diameter pressurized ducts that can easily fit within conventional wall framing to circulate cooled air throughout the home. PACKAGED UNITS - These “single-packaged units” consist of all the components of a split air conditioning system in one unit. They generally mount through the wall or roof and, like the split system, move the cooled air through the home via sheet metal ducts.

7 ways to prevent spring flood damage Spring is around the corner, but with the arrival of blue skies and butterflies also comes the threat of flooding. Rapidly melting snow and frequent rain, especially on still-frozen ground, can mean more water than your home can handle. Even if you live in an area with a low flood risk. Here’s the good news: some simple preparation can significantly lower your chance of property damage. If you are able and it’s safe to do so, take these seven steps: • Move snow away from your foundation and window wells. • Remove debris from eaves, gutters and storm drains. • Direct downspouts and/or downspout extensions away from your home. • Re-open outside water valves only when overnight temperatures are consistently above freezing. • Store valuables in waterproof containers and above basement level. • Clear obstructions away from basement floor drains. • Ensure that your sump pump, backup sump pump and/or backflow valves are working (if you have them). • Boost your year-round flood resiliency

Here are a few extra steps that can improve a home’s wet-weather defense for the long term. If you’ve already made these upgrades, consider sharing this list with friends or family. • Re-grade (away from the building) paved or landscaped areas that currently slope toward your home. • Install a sump pump that has an automatic secondary backup. • Install window wells around basement windows. • Seal any cracks in your foundation walls and basement floors. • Schedule an inspection by a licensed plumber to determine if you have sewer backflow prevention (if not, have it installed). • Purchase a water damage alarm to serve as an early warning. Get more details on how quickly water can enter your home, so you’ll know how to prevent damage before it happens: www.cooperators.ca/en/resources/stay-safe/water-damage-prevention SUBMITTED BY: JULIA WHITE & ASSOCIATES INC. | THE CO-OPERATORS Contact us at 519-538-2226 for a review of your current coverages to make sure you are protected and to understand the difference from one policy to the next.

Gifts to spark home improvement ideas People have spent more time at home in 2020 and 2021 than they likely have in years past. This has provided homeowners with plenty of time to ponder potential upgrades to their homes. After taking inventory of their lifestyles, surroundings, and furnishings, homeowners have embarked on construction projects or home interior design renovations in record numbers. Here are some ideas for home improvement-related gifts (think Mother's Day and Father's Day): HOME IMPROVEMENT RETAILER GIFT CARD Home improvement centres are one-stop shopping for do-it-yourselfers. To help offset the cost of supplies, gift-givers can give a gift card to a neighbourhood hardware store. MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION There are plenty of ideas on the internet, but a subscription to a home remodelling or interior design magazine puts inspiration right in homeowners' hands. Pages can be marked or cut out and used on idea boards. TOOLS AND SUPPLIES Homeowners just starting out may benefit from the basics. Experienced DIYers may have a special tool in mind that is outside their budget right now, like a chop saw or cordless power drill. Purchasing one of these items can help projects move along more smoothly.

“Jozo’s Ski Barn” by Nick Hodson

Early-blooming spring flowers The arrival of spring is a welcome occurrence for many people. Budding flowers are among the harbingers of spring. Spring flowers can revitalize winter-weary people just when they need it most — and provide reassurance that brighter, warmer and longer hours of sunlight are just around the corner. Cold-tolerant flowers are hardy enough to start blooming before the last frosts have dissipated. Other flowers will begin to fill in as days warm a little bit more, according to Better Homes and Gardens. Home gardeners looking to warm up their gardens with early blooms can use these flowers in their early-season containers, window boxes and planting beds. PANSY Pansies prefer cool weather, which can make them one of the best flowers to plant in early spring and late fall. Pansies come in a variety of colours, so there’s bound to be an offering that will blend with any homeowners’ landscape design.

CREEPING PHLOX Also known “moss phlox,” creeping phlox is a short ground-cover that is a herbaceous perennial. Phlox produces small, fragrant flowers in dense clusters, which can attract wildlife, such as butterflies, to their mats across the soil surface.

DAFFODIL Daffodil bulbs produce cheerful, yellow flowers in early spring. The traditional daffodil flower may be a showy yellow or white, with six petals and a trumpet-shape central corona, but many cultivated varietiesn exist today.

TULIP From jewel-toned miniatures to the dazzle of huge lush doubles, tulips are available in a vast range of choices for creating stylish beds and borders.

SNOWDROPS Snowdrops can peek out even when there is snow still on the ground — sometimes as early as January and February. But, their name is actually a reference to their appearance, as snowdrops have three white petals that hang down like drops dripping off the stem. VIOLETS These flowers are closely related to pansies and, as a result, prefer cool seasons. Violets are generally slightly smaller than pansy blooms, but they can be just as beautiful. But, as with pansies, violets will start to fade when the heat arrives.

20

CROCUS Crocus plants are relatively small, only reaching three to six inches in height. However, their grass-like leaves are some of the first sprouts that can be seen among bulb and corm plantings. Preferring full to partial sun, these gold, purple, lavender, white, or yellow flowers can be enjoyed during the earliest days of spring. HYACINTH Hyacinths usually appear after crocus but before tulips. Although hyacinth plants are small, they pack a big punch of both colour and fragrance in their clusters of blooms.

WE ARE IN A TRUE SELLER’S MARKET This past year has been extremely stressful for most people. Between Covid and paychecks stopping, savings accounts dwindling, not to mention the cost of toilet rolls going through the roof last spring, it is no wonder people wound up so tight they feel that they just might burst. Especially if you want or have to sell your home. Everyone knows that having your home squeaky clean and in mint condition when listing will likely lead to a higher sales price, so how do you pull it all together? The concept of putting your property on the market can be extremely overwhelming. Just stop to think of that drawer in your kitchen filled with nothing but bread clips, twist ties, dead batteries, and don’t forget about that thing that you have no idea what it is, but thought it might be useful one day. What about under your bathroom sink where you store all the expired aspirin and cough mixture as well as those hair and body products that you got at Shopper’s on the half-price shelf ten years ago, the contents long unrecognizable. In today’s real estate climate, mere cleaning may not be enough; there’s a lot more you can do to ensure that the right buyers see your property. More people are migrating around Ontario to smaller markets from the big cities, so it’s important to know what these incomers are looking for. The best thing to do is to engage a real estate professional early in the process. They can help advise you on all the necessary steps, prioritize the order in which tasks need to be completed, and set out a realistic timeline to get your home on the market. Although the thought of decluttering your home can be worse than the idea of having a root canal, it is crucial, as you want your potential buyer to have the ability to see themselves in your home. Allow them to envision how their family, furniture, and belongings would fit into this new space. When you have lived in the same house for many years, most people, excluding my husband, acquire a lot of “stuff.” Lean on your Realtor to guide you through clearing out closets, storage rooms, furnace rooms, and sheds. Minimize the number of accessories to essential and impactful, such as your “Blue Mountain Pottery” collection, not what you have always displayed on the HiFi, or in that kitchen nook. If there are items that you don’t envision in your new space, get rid of them. It is unnecessary and expensive to move them twice (unless you are lucky enough to still have friends who don’t mind moving that player piano of yours around to and fro for a case of beer). Repairs and small renovations go a long way to attract a higher price. Painting the interior of your home a light, bright colour will do wonders! Not only does it freshen up the space, but the light reflecting walls will give the impression of more room, higher ceilings, and overall, a larger house.

Call us for a complimentary house valuation and to find out how our unique preparation & marketing program will get your home sold in record time, at the highest amount of money and the least amount of stress for you!

Rely on your Realtor to provide you with trades for small jobs, painters, junk removers, or whatever else is required. Your agent will advise on what they think are top priorities that will most affect the sale price. This work could take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on the scope of work you decide to undertake. While your superb taste is surely selfevident, lean on your Realtor for design/colour advice as they know what today’s buyers are looking for. Even in the off-season, keep the yard tidy to increase your home’s curbside appeal. Carpet and window cleaning is essential as it gives the impression of pride of ownership which suggests that you take care of your home. Potential buyers want to know that your home has been cared for and kept in good repair. Don’t be offended if your Realtor suggests bringing in a professional stager to revamp your home. Gramma’s antique buffet might be put into storage, not because it doesn’t invoke gestures of approval from family members but because stagers know what interior design styles and paint colours are trending now. Neutral, stylish, and elegant is the look that will get you the biggest buck.

Staging costs should be part of your negotiation with your Realtor. If you trust your Realtor to sell your home, you should probably trust them to stage it. One of the most important aspects of getting your home ready to sell is having it properly photographed. Buyers may be coming from afar to view your home, and if it doesn’t look good in the listing, it’s not likely that they will take the time to come and actually see it. Good luck, be well, and may all of your selling hopes and dreams come true!

Improving entertaining spaces Some homes are seemingly built for entertaining, while others may need a little help to make them more fit for hosting dinner, holiday gatherings, or an evening with friends. Yes, someday we will be able to gather with our friends and family indoors! People who open their homes to loved ones may want to modify their spaces to improve the experience for all involved.

We strive to go beyond your expectations while staying competitive with our pricing.

TAME THE CLUTTER - Look for ways to reduce clutter in rooms where entertaining takes place. Built-ins with bookshelves and cabinets can hide electronics and wayward toys or collectibles. Focus attention on the entryway, hanging hooks for collecting coats, keys, and shoes, so they do not overrun the foyer. Remove any knickknacks or other breakable items from shelves or on coffee tables to free up more space. IMPROVE CONVERSATION SEATING - Arrange tables and chairs to create conversation nooks for guests who want to talk and get to know one another better. Consider moving out big and bulky sofas in favour of love seats or comfortable chairs that will take up less room and improve flow in entertaining areas.

No job is too big or too small for our company. We have worked on large corporate buildings down to small cottages and will provide a customized service geared to you!

FIND THE PIECES YOU LIKE Think about how you tend to entertain and then cater your space to those preferences. For example, a large dining table with fold-out extensions or leaves is ideal for someone who regularly hosts formal dinner parties. Renovate a room to include a small bar and club chairs for a lounge feel if cocktail parties are typical. IMPROVE LIGHTING - Work with an electrician and/or designer who can offer lighting ideas that can set the mood for entertaining. Rooms that are dull and dim can benefit from overhead lighting fixtures if there are none already available. Task lighting in the kitchen under cabinets can make it easy to prepare food for guests. Wall sconces or focused lighting on artwork can establish a dramatic effect. DO MAJOR CONSTRUCTION - Consider working with a builder to make some changes if you don’t have the space for entertaining. Taking down a wall can open kitchens to living spaces while adding a deck or threeseason room off the kitchen or dining room can provide more space for guests to congregate. INSTALL A GUEST BATH - Update or add a bathroom near the main entertaining areas. This allows guests to use the bathroom discretely and keeps them from roaming in areas of the house you would prefer they avoid.

Make your next road trip more eco-friendly Many drivers anxiously await the arrival of spring, when they can rev their engines and enjoy a road trip or two. Though the colours of fall foliage might be more closely associated with road trips, many drivers enjoy the first few warm days of spring when they get a chance to hit the open road with their windows down for the first time in months. Driving is not always the most eco-friendly activity. However, there are various ways to enjoy spring road trips without compromising the environment. Don’t idle your vehicle. When engines are running but cars are not moving, this is referred to as idling. It’s hard to blame drivers for idling their vehicles in winter when many motorists try to warm up their engines and their vehicles’ interiors. Idling cars might not be moving, but they are still burning fuel, meaning drivers who routinely idle their vehicles are adversely affecting fuel efficiency. It’s also important to note that idling is no longer necessary in modern vehicles. That’s because the electronic fuel injection systems in today’s cars require just a few seconds to get full oil pressure throughout the engine. Such systems were not present in older vehicles. Take it easy on the road. Road trips tend to be more enjoyable and are certainly safer when drivers take their time and don’t rush to their destination. And driving slowly happens to be more eco-friendly as well. Gently gaining

speed is much more fuel-efficient than accelerating quickly. Always obey speed limits and avoid quickly accelerating when stoplights turn green. Empty the trunk. During winter, many drivers understandably carry some extra items in their trunks to account for inclement weather. Keeping ice scrapers, extra coolant, or even a snow shovel in the trunk might make sense for drivers who live in regions that routinely encounter heavy snowfall. When spring arrives, drivers should remove any unnecessary items from their trunks. Such items will increase the weight of the vehicle, thereby reducing its fuel efficiency. Athletes and outdoors enthusiasts should also remove golf bags and sporting equipment from their trunks when taking trips where such items won’t be needed. Don’t top off at the gas pump. Many drivers, especially those on road trips who want to avoid extra tops at the filling station, top off their gas tanks when nozzles shut off automatically. Such a practice is harmful to the planet and may not be doing your vehicle any favours, either. Gasoline needs some extra room in gas tanks to expand. Without that extra room, the gas may evaporate into the vehicle’s vapour collection system, adversely affecting emissions and potentially damaging the vehicle.

PLEASE DON’T TEXT & DRIVE Because it only takes a second to change a life forever… Protect your own life and the lives of others by making a pledge to never text or talk on the phone while driving. If you are in the car with a distracted driver, let them know it bothers you and ask them to drive phone-free. A message from your friends at Georgian Life Media Inc.

With some simple strategies, drivers can do their part to protect the planet and make roads safer, all while saving money. Speeding, rapid acceleration, and braking are hallmarks of aggressive driving. Each of these habits puts drivers, their passengers, and other motorists at risk of accident and injury. Unlicensed drivers learning to drive are often taught the benefits of defensive driving. Safety is often the focus of such lessons, but the benefits of driving safely and efficiently extend far beyond safety. Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by roughly 15 to 30 percent at highway speeds and can contribute to a reduction in fuel efficiency by as much as 40 percent in stop-and-go traffic. By taking these steps to drive more efficiently, drivers can save money and potentially even lives.

AUTO & MARINE DETAILING SERVICES PAINT CORRECTION CERAMIC COATING

AVOID ROOFTOP CARGO Rooftop cargo units can be beneficial for family vacations or other extended getaways. But, using rooftop cargo boxes as travelling storage units for items you don’t need daily or keeping empty units attached to vehicle roofs compromises fuel efficiency. Rooftop cargo bins increase the aerodynamic drag on vehicles, forcing them to burn more fuel than they would need to burn while moving without anything attached to the roof. Large, blunt rooftop cargo boxes can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 25 percent when a vehicle moves at speeds between 100-125 kms per hour.

360 Raglan St., Collingwood | 705-888-3050 info@buffitdetailing.ca | www.buffitdetailing.ca

DON’T TREAT YOUR TRUNK LIKE A CLOSET Trunks are not closets, so resist the temptation to use them to store golf clubs and other items that are better stored in a house or garage. Research has indicated that an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle can reduce gas mileage by about 1 percent. Because that figure is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle’s weight, drivers of small vehicles may find using their trunks as closets to be especially costly and inefficient. USE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN POSSIBLE Cruise control makes it possible for vehicles to maintain constant speeds. That helps drivers ensure they are always obeying the speed limit, and it keeps cars from the constant acceleration and deceleration that wastes fuel.

Drivers who plan to keep their vehicles for the long haul must emphasize maintenance if they want to keep adding miles to their odometers. In fact, the automotive information site CarAdvice says that routine maintenance may be the most important thing drivers can do for their vehicles. A vehicle needs consistent care if it is to run efficiently. Maintenance also reduces the risk of roadside breakdowns and costly repairs. Here’s a look at some of the benefits of staying on top of maintenance.

SAVES MONEY Even though maintenance costs money, sticking to a consistent maintenance schedule can save big bucks in the long run. For example, the cost of rotating and aligning tires is considerably less than repairing a car after a major blowout and paying for a tow and tire replacement.

IMPROVES PERFORMANCE & EFFICIENCY Routine maintenance includes oil changes, filter changes and fluid top-offs. Such tasks keep engines running smoothly. Ignoring this routine maintenance can put engines in jeopardy of breaking down and adversely affect vehicle performance, diminishing fuel economy and leading to a sluggish ride.

CACE: Collingwood Arts Culture and

Entertainment Group A vision for the future of our regional Arts, Culture, and Entertainment Anyone passionate about the Arts will notice that there’s something in the water around Georgian Bay. Obviously, I’ve noticed our music scene’s uniqueness and centre my attention on that with my website Route 26. But in all divisions of the Arts, we have talented, passionate, and productive artists who choose to live and work here. From visual artists to storytellers and poets, to musicians, to dancers, to theatre, and all the nuances in between, we have a lot to share. The recognition of that artistic diversity formed the foundation of CACE: Collingwood Arts Culture and Entertainment Group. This is a relatively new grassroots organization, rooted in Collingwood with outstretched arms for Arts across our intersecting regions, that has come together to try and set a proper foundation for the future of our regional Arts & Culture scene. CACE’s main focus right now is to build an arts, culture, and entertainment centre in Collingwood. As locals know, we lack a regional facility that could support bigger productions. CACE proposes a 250600 person theatre, with potential for other muchneeded spaces in the building like rehearsal space, an accessible, comfortable, and high-capacity backstage area, gallery space, a lobby, additional space for workshops and smaller events, and ample parking. It would be a centre to bring people together, with something for everybody to enjoy. In addition to the enormous social benefits, this centre would be a great economic driver for the town of Collingwood. Simcoe-Grey MPP Jim Wilson comments on the CACE project: “The proposed Collingwood Arts, Culture and Entertainment Centre is a worthy and needed facility that I am pleased to support. Not only will it provide a home for diverse professional and local art forms in South Georgian Bay, but it will also be an economic boon for our region, providing direct employment during its construction and operational phases and significant spin-offs throughout its lifetime.” Collingwood already has so much to offer as a place to live, work, or visit. Beautiful public parks, trails, access to the water and the hills, great shopping, fabulous restaurants, thriving entrepreneurs, and small businesses… I could keep going. It’s time to support our wonderful Arts & Culture scene with a beautiful, modern, downtown facility. It’s also worth noting that it is not intended for a facility like this to take away from any other venues; a higher capacity and more all-encompassing centre would serve as a central space, which sets a foundation for the Arts scene at large to benefit from. The goal is to make the Arts & Culture of Collingwood and surrounding regions shine and give our artists and touring artists a modern facility to shine in. Setting that foundation naturally allows for smaller venues to benefit from a more thriving Arts scene as well.

YOUR VOICE MATTERS! In partnership with architecture and heritage consulting firm Giaimo, Nordicity is conducting a study to determine the feasibility of developing an arts centre in Collingwood. To ensure this process is meaningful and inclusive, they are seeking input from Collingwood’s community. If you are a seasonal visitor to Collingwood or reside in Collingwood’s broader region, you are also welcome to participate.

Please visit https://collingwoodarts.com to provide your input. The questionnaire should take roughly 5 minutes to complete.

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK IS APRIL 18-24 The National Volunteer Week theme for 2021, The Value of One, The Power of Many, reflects on the awe-inspiring acts of kindness by millions of individuals AND the magic that happens when we work together towards a common purpose. This past year, the GTHS volunteers continued to pour their hearts and souls into helping pets and people of South Georgian Bay despite the challenges presented by the pandemic. They stepped up when we had to re-imagine our operations. They proactively asked what they could do to support the organization during these unprecedented times. They delivered pet food to families in need, worked tirelessly behind their computers to facilitate new virtual adoption procedures and proved, time and time again, that they are the driving force behind the GTHS.

THANK YOU TO OUR TEAM OF DEDICATED AND COMPASSIONATE VOLUNTEERS. WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU!

My Mom was a trailblazer as a women business owner and felt that women should have their own money and wealth - including their own ideas about what to invest in. She was my inspiration for focusing on health, along with wealth, as she would often say, “if you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything.” This has always been my focus as I worked with my clients, especially women, as women often have a disproportionate responsibility for a family’s health and wellness. An equal focus on health and wealth is inseparable.

BUSINESS PROFILE:

LIVING WATER RESORTS: 700+ ACRES OF

A visit to Collingwood’s Living Water Resorts is more than a visit to a hotel on the Bay. They’re uniquely different. They’re purposely focused on serving inspiring experiences to their guests, staff, and the local community. They’re 700+ acres of fresh experiences awaiting your arrival. Living Water Resorts, nestled between the Blue Mountains and Georgian Bay, features a 19-hole championship golf course, an on-site award-winning spa with Ontario’s only Aquapath, Collingwood’s largest patio - Station on the Green, Collingwood’s only waterfront restaurant - Lakeside Seafood & Grill which received the coveted Traveller Choice Dining Award, spacious indoor pool & adult-only outdoor pool, and a full-service marina.

YOUR SEASON, YOUR STAY The best part of Living Water Resort is that it is in Ontario’s Blue Mountain playground. For those who wish to forge an unbreakable bond with family and nature, this is the spot. Get lost in the trails, hiking, biking, nature watching. Spend a peaceful day having a picnic under the willow trees along the shore near Bear Estate. Or jump into a Hummer for a memorable mud-filled journey through the nearby trails. Head out to the Living Water Marina and explore Georgian Bay on a jet ski. Challenge yourself to a stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking adventure.

LIVING WATER CHOOSES FREEDOM We have learned many things during the past 12 months. We learned simple things. How to enjoy take-out food from your favourite restaurant, watch sports without fans in stadiums, shop by a curbside pickup. The list goes on. We learned once again that we do not have absolute control of our future in life. But we do have hope, faith, and positive energy. By striving to do good deeds each day and be kind to each other, we will sleep well and live out our lives fully.

Living Water Resorts was born from a 1992 family trip to Collingwood when Larry Law and his family stumbled upon what was then known as Cranberry Village. Shortly after that visit, Larry acquired the property. Those years of memorable experiences at the property with his family and friends inspired Larry to invite others to come to the resort, stay, and enjoy what was so special to him. Larry explains his resort’s mission: “Living Water Resorts is dedicated to serving inspiring experiences to our guests, our staff, and our local community through the resort’s facilities, services, and programs to build positivity.” In the intervening years, the resort has witnessed many changes. At that time, it had less than 20 staff members. Today, Living Water employs more than 500+ people and is Collingwood’s largest employer. The resort’s developments include the 2007 completion of the present Living Water Resort & Spa building located on Georgian Bay and the 2008 completion of Bear Estate, the only waterfront wedding and banquet venue in the region. In 2018, the former Cranberry Resort was rebranded as Living Water Resort & Spa and the Living Stone Golf Resort. A new Phase IV addition to the Living Water Resort & Spa hotel will be ready for occupancy in Spring, increasing accommodations to over 400 rooms/suites. Phase IV has a private theatre with exclusive family use for guests and more water view suites for viewing spectacular sunrises.

36

We’ve also learned that each of us can make a difference by contributing our humble capacities to helping others. At Living Water Resorts, we choose freedom. The Freedom to explore. The Freedom to dream. The Freedom to contribute. The Freedom to create positive energy by showing love and caring for others.

PAYING IT FORWARD Living Water Resorts has a continuing commitment to making Collingwood a model town where people live a meaningful life in harmony and contribute to our society. Larry Law and the resort have received numerous awards and recognitions for contributions to the local community, including the Order of Collingwood, Rotarian of the Year, Tourism Canada HR Service Award, and Travellers Choice Global Top 10% Awards for Lakeside Seafood and Grill and Living Shore Spa. The resort is the annual sponsor of the Civic Prayer Breakfast of South Georgian Bay, promoting positive encouragement and support for local civic leaders harmoniously.

A new home for Hospice programs Hospice Georgian Triangle (HGT) received an Ontario Trillium Foundation Resilient Communities Fund grant of $150,000. The pandemic has made clear the need for larger space to grow HGT’s free, small group and one-on-one counselling services provided to patients, caregivers, grieving and bereaved individuals and families. This spring the new space will also allow for grief and bereavement services specifically for children and youth, as well as a Palliative Pain and Symptom Management Clinic. These Community Support programs now call 186 Hurontario St., Unit 103 in Collingwood, “home”. Funds from the grant are being used to help with hiring two full-time staff, offering workshops and training, purchasing art therapy supplies, developmental toys, scan thermometers as well as PPE and cleaning materials. The space has been reconfigured to provide a safe working environment for staff and volunteers that will allow for socially distanced care and support to be provided to clients, families and donors alike, once public health restrictions allow. Hospice Georgian Triangle’s mission to “support individuals, and their caregivers, in their journey with a life limiting illness to live the best life possible” is delivered through its Community Support programs and Campbell House, the 10-bed hospice at 240 Erie St. in Collingwood. All of Hospice Georgian Triangle’s programs are available at no cost to patients, clients and families because of financial support from our community, as well as grants such as the one from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Insurance as a wealth management strategy The past year has reminded us all that life doesn’t always go as planned. Life circumstances such as our health, employment, and family situations can change abruptly and without warning. Now more than ever, we find ourselves wanting to plan for the unexpected. You might find yourself giving more thought to what’s important to you and your family. There is peace of mind that comes from a personalized wealth plan. When we hear the term “wealth planning,” many of us tend to focus solely on the investment portfolio and its performance. While investment management is certainly an integral piece of overall wealth management, there are other areas of planning that can – and should – be discussed. Broader wealth planning could include financial planning, tax strategy, charitable giving, saving for education, business-owner planning, estate planning, financial literacy, and insurance. We often worry not only about building and protecting wealth in our lifetime, but also maintaining those assets for future generations. Life insurance can be a way to grow and maximize wealth as part of a broader financial and estate plan. It can provide immediate and tax-free liquidity to satisfy estate obligations including taxes, probate and estate settlement costs. The policy death benefit will typically bypass the estate, which means that the funds aren’t subject to probate (where provincially applicable) and can go directly to beneficiaries without delay. This feature facilitates a tax-effective way to transfer wealth to the next generation or perhaps a charity of choice. While many understand the value of life insurance, few people consider the financial repercussions of recovering from a serious accident or illness.

Critical illness coverage provides financial safeguards in the event of a loss of income or the depletion of assets that could seriously affect achieving your financial goals. More recently, Covid-19 has also heightened interest in long-term-care insurance to help provide a cash flow to keep you in your home longer or provide extra assistance in long-term care or retirement homes if needed. Regardless of your situation, any strategy you consider should reflect your personal and family objectives. The true value of wealth planning comes from partnering with a team of professionals to explore all possible strategies that could enhance and protect your wealth.
