Be the solution to plastic pollution When Rotary International created a new area of focus – The Environment, The Wasaga Beach Rotary Club picked up the ball and formed a Rotary Environment Team. Partnering with Georgian Bay Forever, the groups then organized several Shoreline Clean Up events. On July 5th, at Beach Area 3 people of all ages registered and received the tools to pick up those unwanted items that pollute our beaches. The Shoreline Clean Up brought in 21 bags, which translates into 64 pounds. If you would like to help, there will be two more Shoreline Clean Up events: Meet at Beach Area 3 from 9-11am on August 9th and 23rd.

Darcy MacLeod, Owner of Brick House Home Inspection Services is a Professional, Experienced Inspector with over 1000 home and commercial inspections under her “Tool Belt”! Darcy is a Registered Home Inspector (RHI), Commercial Building Inspector (CBI), New Construction Inspector (NCI), a Certified Master Inspector (CMI) and WETT Certified #11142 (wood-burning systems). Darcy is a member of the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (OAHI), the Canadian Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA), National Women in Roofing (NWIR), the International Institute Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) and the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI). Purchasing a home can be very stressful. Our inspection reports are clear and concise, providing relevant information regarding any deficiencies noted during an inspection in order to help the client make “an educated purchasing decision.” Covid19 has brought dramatic changes to the real estate market. Home buyers have found themselves in multiple offer situations and are often pressured to waive a home inspection. They are also likely to be told by the seller that only offers without conditions will be accepted. Purchasing a home without having a home inspection is never recommended however, it appears to be a unfortuate reality in today’s real estate market. Rural properties should also have well and septic inspections prior to purchase as these systems can run costs into the thousands of dollars to replace. Stories of home buyers (who did not have a home inspection prior to purchase) discovering serious deficiencies in the newly purchased home are starting to surface in the media. We suggest that any home buyer who did not have a home inspection prior to purchase contact Brick House Home Inspection Services for a “Post Purchase” home inspection upon possession. The client will gain valuable information on the current condition of the home and any urgent improvements that should be performed. Darcy MacLeod is a “Proud Pet Partner” of the Georgian Triangle Humane Society. A percentage of every client fee is donated to help dogs and cats in need.

Ted Yoannou: In Your Corner Lies My Father Told Me It is universally agreed within my family that our father was the most unique person we’ve ever known. We don’t have grand illusions that he was the greatest dad, the best husband, or most successful man, but when it came to being distinctive, unfathomable, and just downright otherworldly… ladies and gentlemen, the Oscar goes to… Chris T. Yoannou. Born in a small village in northern Greece in 1934, his early memories were of the mischievous trouble and fun he had during the WW2 years, with no school to bore or structure him and all the adults preoccupied with other issues, like food and survival.
designed by Drobotdean - Freepik.com
Arriving in Canada in 1947, he and one of his older brothers, speaking no English, were placed in the local elementary school. Dad would boast that our Uncle Jimmy was the best athlete the school ever had, breaking all the records. For years, we were so proud. It was only much later that we realized Uncle Jimmy was 15 years old at the time, probably had a moustache and hair on his chest, and was undoubtedly faster and stronger than his nineyear-old classmates. But still, a record is a record.
Only 15km away from Collingwood and 11km from Stayner
Dad’s family and community mainly were conservative, business-minded people, hard-working immigrants in the restaurant industry, putting in long hours, saving every penny, supporting their families.

Dad went against the grain. He was fascinated with Shakespeare plays, memorized almost every English word in the dictionary, spent money recklessly, befriended oddball characters, championed the underdog, dreamt of forming idealistic societies and clubs, smoked like a chimney and drank like a sailor (until medical issues required him to quit both habits cold turkey, which he remarkably did).

One time, my uncles, who ran our family’s restaurant, sought to take one day off per week, and they asked Dad to manage the business on Sundays for them. Dad jumped at the opportunity of being in charge and proceeded to invite dozens of friends for evenings of free food, drinks, storytelling, and laughs, turning Sundays at the restaurant into one big party. Not long after noticing the significant Sunday losses, my uncles fired him... but still loved him.

Dad was remarkably liberal in relation to his peers, but he always wore suits, and his idea of relaxing was taking off the jacket and loosening the tie. He was a deep thinker, and his mind was always elsewhere. You would ask him a straightforward question, “Dad, could you pick me up from school later today?” and he would look back, almost right through me, and answer, “So, who do you think shot JFK?” I don’t know Dad; I’m only eight years old. When asked late in life by new people he met if he was retired, his standard answer was, “Retired? I haven’t even started.” Then, asked what his job was, he replied with a straight face, “fresh air inspector.” He was a great “ideas man,” but not so good with “putting the plan into action.” Schemes and dreams. God bless Mom for keeping it all together. And, God bless them both for looking after my brothers and me, celebrating our successes, and supporting us through our struggles. One time in my mid 30’s, my stress levels were at an all-time high. I took over a law practice with new employees, leases, and responsibilities, married with three young children under the age of five, a new house, and a big mortgage. I was overwhelmed. Dad’s opinion? “You’re no fun anymore, way too serious. You need to take a year off, go to Europe and write a book.” I loved that advice. I wish there were a parallel universe where I could see what would have happened had I followed it.

He would often ask me what my book would be titled. One time I replied, “Lies My Father Told Me.” He looked up quizzically, with that characteristic gleam in his eye, “Yes! Promise me you’ll write it!” Submitted by: Ted C. Yoannou, B.A., LL.B. Essential summer skincare tips Protecting and caring for skin should be part of people’s year-round health care regimens. Such an approach can help people look their best and uncover any minor issues before they escalate into something more significant. National Geographic says adults can carry eight pounds and 22 square feet of skin on their bodies. Skin guards a person from harmful chemicals, protects the body against extremes in temperature, and prevents internal organs and other components from evaporating. The skin also guards against damaging sunlight. Skincare is not seasonal, though efforts to protect the skin may need to be stepped up during the summer. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, in 2020, an estimated: • 8,000 Canadians will be diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer. • 1,300 Canadians will die from melanoma skin cancer. • 4,400 men will be diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer and 870 will die from it. • 3,600 women will be diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer and 450 will die from it. The bulk of sun damage to the skin happens in the summer when ultraviolet radiation levels are elevated, and people often wear less clothing that exposes more of their skin. These skin wellness tips can help protect the skin and keep it looking its best when the mercury rises. Lighten up – Choose lightweight products for summer usage. This includes cleansers, makeup, and oil cleansers. For instance, rather than an oil cleanser, choose a gentle, foaming option. Thicker products mixed with increased perspiration and humidity may lead to clogged pores and inflammation. Lather on sunscreen – Sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more is recommended to protect the skin from UV damage. But, it’s easy to forget to apply sunscreen. However, using a lightweight moisturizer with SPF built-in reduces product usage and time spent caring for skin. Use sunscreen even when it is cloudy and reapply sunscreen every two hours (every hour if you are swimming or sweating). Also, use a lip balm or lipstick that contains sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Utilize vitamin C serums – Hyperpigmentation can occur in summer. Vitamin C serum can improve the appearance of fine lines, help with collagen production, and prevent hyperpigmentation.
It’s time to live your best life At Balmoral Place you can enjoy a wide range of activities safely with our enhanced precautionary protocols.
Drink more water – Higher temperatures and increased perspiration can lead to dehydration. That may cause headaches, dry skin, and even lightheadedness. So, drink at least eight eight-ounce glasses of water every day. Wear protective clothing – Wear clothing that offers sunscreen protection. For additional protection, look for clothes made with special sun-protective materials. Accessorize – Wear a hat that will shade your face, neck, and ears and a pair of sunglasses. Sunglasses with lenses that have 99% to 100% UV absorption provide optimal protection for the eyes and the surrounding skin. Stay in the shade – In addition to using sunscreen, try to stay out of the sun as much as possible when UV rays are at their strongest, between 10am and 4pm. Be extra careful around water and sand. These surfaces reflect the damaging rays of the sun, which can increase your chance of getting a sunburn. Practice the shadow rule: if your shadow is shorter than you, the sun’s rays are at their strongest, and you should find shade. Be even more cautious if you are taking medications that may make you more sensitive to the sun. share on twitter These include specific types of antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, antifungals, blood pressure medications, and chemotherapies. It’s important to care for the skin daily, but especially so during the summer.

Complementary Health Care Do you ever wonder what health practices exist besides the primary care you receive in the hospital or at a clinic? You’re not alone - often, people wonder what else they can be doing to improve their health and quality of life, aside from checkups and medication. Look no further, and welcome to the world of complementary health care, health care that complements doctors’ visits. Complementary health care aims to provide alternative methods of pain relief, relaxation, and general well-being. Often, complementary health care does not need a referral and does not have long wait times - an added bonus! Different forms of complementary health care include but are not limited to massage therapy, acupuncture, naturopathy, and chiropractic care. About massage therapy: A very multipurpose and customizable form of health care, massage therapy aims to benefit your specific needs. Massage therapy is becoming a common additional treatment for many medical concerns such as joint pain, neuropathies, digestive disorders, and general pain due to other conditions. Massage works to improve circulation, activate the lymphatic system and immune system and alleviate muscle tension. By activating these systems, patients often find their conditions more manageable and enhance their quality of life. Massage is not a one-size-fits-all therapy, as adjusted to your specific needs and preferences. That’s the beauty of the service - it is entirely customizable for your particular health care needs,
Cancer Chat
For most of us, the global pandemic has been viewed as negative: a lot of people got sick, too many people have died, our lives have been locked down and the freedoms we often take for granted were denied. However, the COVID-19 pandemic demanded a vaccine which has fortunately revealed a positive. With recent Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of lipid nanoparticle loaded mRNA vaccines to prevent COVID-19, the doors have been opened for rapid advancement of mRNA vaccines for cancer immunotherapy. Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines are a new class of vaccines that have become a promising platform for cancer treatment. The mRNA vaccine technology augments an emerging field called immuno-oncology or immunotherapy. This therapeutic area involves harnessing the body’s immune system to identify and kill cancer cells in the same way the immune system identifies and targets infection from pathogens. The potential of mRNA to encode any protein, the excellent safety profile, and a flexible production process enable a versatile tool for developing new innovative therapeutics. Experts regard mRNA vaccines as the epitome of personalized medicine, providing a highly personalized, highly specific approach, rather than a one-size-fits-all treatment. The mRNA vaccine technology exploits the system our cells use to make proteins. Our cells make proteins based on the genetic information written in our DNA. Each gene codes for a specific protein, and while this information is essential, cells cannot make a protein from DNA until an mRNA molecule translates the
and as a bonus, extremely relaxing! About acupuncture: Acupuncture originated in ancient China and has become a force to be reckoned with in Western health care. Essentially, acupuncture involves the use of hair-thin needles inserted into specific points of the body that are causing pain or ache. These needles stimulate your nervous system to release neurotransmitters and hormones that aid in the process of healing. Because the needles are so thin, almost no one notices the needle has
been inserted. Acupuncture has shown to be very effective when used as a complement to medicine in post-operative care and managing chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia or migraines. Additionally, acupuncture has been shown to help reduce nausea caused by chemotherapy and pain medications. About naturopathy: Naturopathic doctors have extensive training in lifestyle habits, nutrition, botanical medicine, counselling and pharmacology, just to name a
instructions. The mRNA vaccine delivers ready-made mRNA instructions for making a specific protein. For COVID-19 vaccines, the instructions are for making the “spike” protein found on the surface of SARSCoV-2 virus. Once administered and internalized, the mRNA transcripts are translated in the cytoplasm, and the resulting antigens are presented to the immune system cells to stimulate an immune response. Moderna, the pharmaceutical giant partly responsible for a COVID-19 vaccine, is creating individualized, mRNA-based personalized cancer vaccines. Through next-generation sequencing, they identify mutations called neoepitopes found on a patient’s cancer cells. Neoepitopes can help the immune system distinguish cancer cells from normal cells. Using bioinformatic algorithms, twenty neoepitopes present on the patient’s cancer are chosen to elicit the strongest immune response. A personalized vaccine is thus created that encodes for each of these neoepitopes loaded onto a single mRNA molecule. When injected into the patient, the vaccine directs the patient’s cells to express the selected neoepitopes to help train the patient’s immune system to recognize the cancer cells as foreign and destroy them. Currently, there are few published studies of trials with mRNA cancer vaccines in humans. Optimistically, a glimmer of hope is emerging from animal studies. A study published in 2018 found an mRNA vaccine combined with a monoclonal antibody in a mouse model of triple-negative breast cancer, which is notoriously aggressive with poor prognosis, enhanced the anti-tumor benefits compared to those given only vaccine or the monoclonal antibody alone. HEALTH & WELLNESS few. They are experts in answering questions such as “would this supplement be beneficial for me” or “is it safe to consume these supplements and herbs along with my medications prescribed by my doctor?” They are a great addition to any health team and can assist with many aspects of your lifestyle. Naturopathic medicine is very individualistic and helps to address any health concern. Naturopathic doctors can also administer acupuncture and recommend additional complementary health care tools. They have a similar size toolbox to medical doctors but carry different tools within it! About chiropractic care: Chiropractic care deals with the adjustment of the spine to improve motion and discomfort. People often see results at chiropractors when treated for a wide variety of musculoskeletal problems, particularly those that affect your back. Chiropractors use movements and pressure to manipulate the area that needs treating. Similar to massage therapy, chiropractic care is customizable to your wants and needs. Although complementary care has proven benefits, it is always crucial to discuss with your care provider before beginning complementary care. Hopefully, along with your primary care, complementary care can ease your treatment process and get you back to feeling like your best self even sooner. in 2019 found that when mice with lymphoma were given an mRNA vaccine along with a checkpoint inhibitor drug, significantly reduced tumor growth was observed, and 40 percent of the mice experienced complete tumor regression. Based on promising studies such as these, phase one and phase two clinical trials are recruiting participants or are underway to assess the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of therapeutic mRNA vaccines to treat humans with various cancers including melanoma, gastrointestinal, breast, ovarian, pancreatic, and non-small cell lung cancers. BioNTech, another leader in developing mRNA vaccines for COVID-19, has begun phase II clinical trials evaluating their mRNA-based therapy BNT111 in combination with a monoclonal antibody therapy in patients with relapsed unresectable late-stage melanoma. Experts say it is conceivable that an mRNA vaccine for cancer could gain approval by the FDA within the next five years. The beauty of mRNA vaccine technology - it is agnostic to a person’s cancer type and the technology is adaptable to the underlying biology of that cancer. COVID-19 has shown us that mRNA vaccines can be an efficacious and safe technology for millions of people. If scientists can leverage mRNA vaccines with the ability to reprogram the immune system to precisely get rid of cancer, that would be amazing. Easy ways to keep your immune system strong
HEALTH & WELLNESS
The immune system is a powerful component of the human body. The immune system recognizes when viruses, bacteria, and other foreign invaders enter or compromise the body and then takes action to prevent illnesses from taking over. The average person can help their immune system do its job more effectively by making the immune system as strong as it can be.
Consume fiber and fermented foods. Fiber can help feed the gut microbiome, which is linked to a robust immune system. The microbiome also may prevent harmful pathogens from entering the body through the digestive tract. Data also suggests that eating more fermented foods can further strengthen and populate healthy bacteria in the gut.
Harvard Medical School says that diet, exercise, age, and psychological stress may affect immune system response. Certain lifestyle choices can promote a strong immune system.
Exercise regularly. Thirty minutes of exercise each day can go a long way toward keeping the body healthy. Physical activity may help flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways. In addition, exercise causes changes in antibodies and white blood cells. These antibodies and white blood cells circulate rapidly, so they may detect illnesses earlier than they would if you do not exercise. Body temperature also rises during exercise, which could naturally prevent bacteria from growing.
Get adequate sleep. Doctors believe sleep and immunity are closely tied. A study of 164 healthy adults published by the National Institutes of Health found those who slept fewer than six hours each night were more likely to catch a cold than people who slept for more than six hours. So aim for adequate rest each night to keep your body in top form.
Try to minimize stress. Stress reduces the immune system’s ability to fight off antigens, making people more susceptible to infections. In addition, the stress hormone corticosteroid can suppress the effectiveness of the immune system. Limiting stress through meditation and breathing exercises or removing stressors from one’s life may help.
Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables supply the powerhouse antioxidants that are essential for protecting the body against free radicals. Free radicals may play a role in heart disease, cancer, and other diseases. So serve fruits and/or vegetables with every meal to ensure you’re getting enough antioxidant-rich foods.
A healthy immune system is vital to fending off or recovering from illness.
Hearing Loss and Denial: A Series Hearing loss affects people differently, and their reaction to it differs as well. Typically, patients begin in the denial stage. They are unwilling to admit the extent of their hearing loss or its impact on themselves or those around them. Any evidence given by family or friends is usually blamed on something else. Often, patients with hearing loss think other people are speaking too quickly, too quietly, or mumbling. We will explore this topic over a series of articles outlining some of the causes of denial, the severity of denial, the disadvantages and repercussions of denial, and some strategies to help with denial. Part 1: Classification of Denial To break this down further, denial is often described as a protective mechanism against negative thoughts, feelings, fears, or anxiety. But, when it comes to hearing, what is being denied?
Denial of existence of hearing loss. In this situation, the person will insist that their hearing is fine. Following a hearing test that indicates hearing loss, they will state that they weren’t concentrating or that their breathing was interfering with the test. Denial of impact. Individuals may downplay the impact of their hearing loss. Even with a severe loss, they may continue to strongly deny difficulty hearing. Denial of hearing aids. The person may not want to wear hearing aids. Some of the reasons for this include the cost of the hearing aids, the perceived stigma associated with wearing them, etc. Denial of the need to use hearing aids once they have them. The individual may proceed with hearing aids but does not use them or does not use them frequently enough. The topic of denial is personal and multi-faceted. It is a process, and people will be at different stages. It is beneficial to have a hearing assessment regardless of readiness for treatment. People may have had a negative experience in the past, and while unfortunate, it should not deter anyone from seeking help. It is essential to find and work with an experienced Audiologist, whom you are comfortable with and will take the time to address all of your questions and concerns.

Dark nights for bright meteors The first time I saw the Perseid Meteor Shower was in 2005. I was working at a summer camp on Gabriola Island in British Columbia. After the quarter moon set, sitting on the rock beach across from my “office,” I watched streak after bright streak slice the sky.
20. If you have binoculars or a telescope, check them out - you’ll likely catch some of their moons, too. Look for the pair in the southeast after the sun sets; they’ll both travel west through the sky overnight. Also, on August 10, take a look to the west around 9 p.m. There, you’ll see Venus setting with the thin crescent Moon. The pair is always a pretty sight.
If the skies are clear, this year’s show promises to be just as good - if not better. The annual Perseids originate from the comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, a oncein-133-year visitor that last reached its closest approach to the Sun in December 1992. Although neither you nor I will likely see the comet again - its next close solar pass is 2126 - we can see the remnants of its tail in the form of the Perseid meteors, which fall from about July 17 to August 24 each year.
Deep-sky
The peak of this year’s shower is predicted to be at 3 p.m. on August 12, meaning you should be able to see quite a few that morning before sunrise and later that evening. The crescent moon sets at 10:48 p.m., providing a dark sky where even faint meteors can stand out. Look for them in the northeast: the Perseids’ radiant, or point of origin, is in the constellation Perseus.
Before thunderclouds and the smoky haze started blowing through our region, we had some great stargazing weather. I spent most clear nights up on Blue Mountain, scouring the skies for sights I hadn’t seen before. If things clear up, with the Moon out of the way, the week of August 8 promises to be a good one for deep-sky gazing.
Solar System
Lately, I’ve been hunting for double stars and multiple-star systems, many of which can be seen with binoculars as well as telescopes. My constellation of choice has been Lyra, which tends to be high in the sky these days. There are three wellknown double stars in the constellation: Zeta Lyrae, Delta Lyrae and Epsilon Lyrae (which is known as the “double-double,” for you coffee fans out there).
The Perseids aren’t the only great show this summer. This month, two of our neighbourhood friendly gas giants are going to reach opposition (meaning the planets will be directly facing the sun based on our location). Saturn reaches opposition on August 2, while Jupiter reaches opposition on August

Proud to Support Summer Safety
Warm weather can make travel more enjoyable and affords people more time to enjoy the great outdoors. However, it’s best to keep safety in mind when soaking up the sun. That’s important for all members of the family, including pets. Cats and dogs are as susceptible to heat-related illnesses as their human companions. Pets need extra care during the warm weather to avoid damage and sickness from the sun, heat and more. Recognize heat stroke. Pets can suffer from heat stroke, and certain breeds of dogs are highly susceptible, particularly those with short snouts, such as pugs and bulldogs. Excessive exercise in hot weather, lack of appropriate shelter outdoors, and leaving a dog in a hot car may precipitate an episode of heat stroke. It’s essential to get the pet out of direct heat right away and check for signs of shock, including seizures, a body temperature of 104 F or higher, stupor, increased heart rate, or excessive panting. Placing water-soaked towels on the pet’s feet, head, neck, and abdomen can bring down its temperature. Be cautious of hot surfaces. Humans wear shoes on their feet for protection, but pets do not have that luxury. Think about how hot your feet can feel when you scurry barefoot across hot sand en route to the shoreline or to cross a deck to get to the pool. When the sun beats down on surfaces, those surface temperatures rise quickly. According to a study by Liberty Home and Pet Services, at peak afternoon sun and an ambient temperature of 95 F - the temperature of cement was measured at 125 F, red brick at 135 F, blacktop at 140 F, and grass at 102 F. Individuals who think a car is safer for their dog or cat may be surprised the study measured 152 F on seat surfaces. Provide extra water. You will likely need to fill your pets’ water bowls more frequently in warm weather than during other times of the year. Be sure to provide constant access to fresh water, even for young puppies who may be learning to house train. Avoid cutting fur too short. If a veterinarian suggests a haircut may be beneficial for keeping a pet cool or comfortable, resist the urge to shave down to the skin. Having at least one inch of fur will protect the pet from sunburn. Outdoor hazards. Warm weather may bring out a high number of insects and wildlife. Use a flea and tick preventative product and medication to protect against heartworm, which is transmitted through mosquitoes. Snakes, skunks, raccoons, foxes, and other animals may be roaming around, and a scuffle with your pet can result in injury.

Few outdoor activities are more widely enjoyed than hiking. Hiking is a great activity that makes for great exercise and an excellent way for people of all ages to spend time enjoying the great outdoors. Veteran hiking enthusiasts recognize that hiking, while a fun activity, can quickly become dangerous if they don’t exercise caution and prepare for their hikes. Novice hikers may want to focus on a handful of areas before going on their first hikes. Attire – Appropriate attire and footwear can make hikes safer and more enjoyable. Hikers going on short hikes that do not involve heavy packs or technical terrain can wear trail shoes, while hikers should wear hiking books when carrying heavy loads or traversing more technical terrain. Boots offer more support than hiking shoes, making them more suitable than hiking shoes on rugged terrain. In addition to wearing footwear appropriate to the terrain they will be traversing, hikers should pack rain gear and extra clothing. Hikers should dress in layers so they can adjust to changes in the weather and their activity levels. Avoid cotton, which keeps moisture close to the skin, and bring a hat to protect against unforeseen rainstorms and insects. Technology – Men and women may be accustomed to pulling out their smartphones or

safety tips safety tips tablets and employing GPS services on such devices when they need directions. But, it’s important that hikers recognize networks may not be accessible in wooded or remote areas. As a result, hikers should not think they can rely exclusively on technology to help them when they get lost. Hikers should carry a map and compass during the hike, making sure they bring an updated map of the trails they will be hiking.
Approved Veterans Provider
Food and drink – Extra food and drink can help hikers whose hikes end up taking longer than they anticipated. Choosing snacks such as protein bars that can fill a person up without making him or her feel sluggish is a good idea. In addition, hikers should pack enough water to keep them hydrated during the hike and longer in case a person gets lost or wants to stop and enjoy a nice view along the way. Drinking too little water during a hike can make one susceptible to hypothermia and/or altitude sickness.
Adding Life to Years...
Tools – Hikers should purchase a prepackaged first-aid kit for hikers. In addition, a knife or multipurpose tool can help a person perform repairs on broken or malfunctioning gear. If need be, hikers should bring a backup pair of eyeglasses or, if contact lenses are worn, a lens kit and eyeglasses just in case.

Stay safe when working in the yard this summer A day spent working in the yard is an ideal way to pass the time on summer afternoons. A pristine landscape can add value to a property and instill pride in homeowners who put a lot of thought and effort into their lawns and gardens.

A sun-soaked day can make it easy to overlook potential threats when working on a lawn or garden. But, safety precautions are of the utmost necessity when working in the yard, where the risk for serious injury is considerable. Lawn and garden-related injuries can be prevented without going to great lengths. Know your terrain before mowing. Knowing the terrain in your yard can reduce the risk of accidents or injury. This can be especially important when mowing the lawn with a riding mower. Adhere to manufacturers’ recommendations regarding inclines to reduce tip-over accidents that can pin riders beneath the mower. Study hilly areas of the yard before mowing so you know which areas are safe to cut with a riding mower and which sites are best done with a walk-behind mower. For greater control when using a walk-behind mower on an incline, mow parallel to the slope.

Apply and reapply sunscreen. Sunburns may not require trips to the emergency room, but they can still be severe. The Skin Cancer Foundation notes that sunburn is a leading cause in most cases of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma, which is the deadliest form of skin cancer. The SCF recommends applying sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside to allow the sunscreen to bond to your skin. Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours and more often if you’re sweating excessively. The SCF recommends broad-spectrum sunscreens, which protect the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Though a product with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 is acceptable when walking the dog or driving to work, the SCF advises using a product with an SPF of 30 or higher when engaging in extended outdoor activities like gardening or mowing. Employ the buddy system. Use the buddy system when pruning tall trees or performing any tasks that require a ladder. Ask a significant other or neighbour to hold the ladder in place while you climb up to reduce your risk of falling. If cutting large branches, cut them piecemeal to minimize the risk of being injured by heavy falling branches. Inspect the property for insect hives. Common insect stings come from bees, wasps, and hornets. Homeowners who are not careful can inadvertently come across hives when doing yard work, making them vulnerable to bites and stings. That can be very dangerous for anyone, and especially so for people with a history of allergic reactions to insect bites or stings. Inspect areas where you’ll be working to make sure insects haven’t put down roots in your property. If you discover any hives and are hesitant to remove them on your own, contact a local landscaping company. Accidents and injuries can be easily prevented when homeowners take a few simple safety precautions while tending to their lawns and gardens.

Cottage succession planning Whether you call it a cottage, chalet, camp or cabin, it’s your family’s special place to relax and enjoy the great outdoors. For many families, it’s a place filled with generations of memories. Keeping the cottage in the family from one generation to the next isn’t always as easy as it might seem. There are many issues to consider, including how the taxes will be paid. Capital gains taxes If your cottage has been in the family for many years, the value has probably increased dramatically. This increase in value can result in a very large, taxable capital gain, which is triggered when you pass along the property to anyone other than your spouse, including your children. It is important to track capital expenses throughout your ownership of the cottage as these can be added to increase the adjusted cost base of the cottage, potentially reducing the capital gain. When you gift or sell your cottage to anyone other than your spouse (either during your lifetime or at the time of death), the government views it as having been sold at fair market value – a “deemed disposition.” The capital gain on this deemed disposition may be taxable if you are not able to or choose not to claim a principal residence exemption. The following illustrates the taxes owed on a cottage property that was purchased by a couple in 2000 and sold to their child in 2021. Original purchase price of cottage in 2000 = $400,000 Fair market value (FMV) in 2021 = $800,000 Renovations done (capital expense) in 2002 = $50,000 Adjusted cost base (ACB) = $450,000 Capital gains tax = ($800,000-$450,000) x 50% x 46% Taxes payable (50% inclusion rate and a 46% marginal tax rate) = $80,500 Consider ways to reduce taxes While taxes are inevitable, proper planning can help reduce the burden. Here are few cottage succession planning strategies:

BUSINESS PROFILE:
Let’s get Saucy! Saucy Pasta and Gourmet Foods began with a love of Italian cooking. Founder, Rick Gillman, evolved his passion for Italian cooking into an obsession, learning the nuances of the traditional recipes he lovingly sourced from Italy and around the globe. His love of premium and novel ingredients results in a unique fusion of traditional and modern Italian flavours.
Many varieties of sauces are available: Vegetarian, Rosé, Beef Bolognese, Chicken Breast Cacciatore, Fire Roasted Red Pepper, Roasted Red Pepper Rose, Tracy’s Arrabbiata, Puttanesca, Caper & Kalamata, and Heretic Spirits A la Vodka - as well as Alfredo and Pesto, three Vegan and eight Vegetarian options - all Gluten Free.
After beginning Saucy Pasta in 2014 and closing due to health reasons, the seed was already planted. Rick and Tracy recognized the rapidly changing restaurant landscape during the pandemic and saw an opportunity to create a new model; Saucy Artisan Pasta was born. Their first location opened in Thornbury in 2020. After selling out almost daily, Tracy and Rick decided to scale up to meet both the demand of their regular clientele and the many requests from local restaurants and stores interested in carrying their quality pasta. As a result, Saucy Artisan Pasta’s new flagship store and Pasta Factory opened in Cranberry Mews in Collingwood in the winter of 2021.
Other specialties include in-house fresh baked daily demi-baguettes and Rosemary Foccacia, made-from-scratch Tiramisu, Fresh Lobster and Ricotta Cannelloni, Jumbo Stuffed Spinach and Ricotta or Beef Stuffed Shells, Lemon Biscotti, Fresh Shaved Parmesan Reggiano, Brie/Walnut/Pear Ravioli and much, much more. Selections change daily. Hot take-out food is coming to the menu this summer. Saucy Pasta is also the exclusive regional distributor of Magiccann Pain relief topicals.
Welcome, Saucy Pasta 2.0
Saucy Pasta offers a vast array of over 30 varieties of fresh pasta shapes and flavour infusions, made fresh daily, ranging from traditional to unique and novel. They create a dozen different sauces - made from fresh milled tomatoes - not a concentrate like most restaurants use. Saucy creates handmade ravioli, cannelloni, and four varieties of lasagna, assembled daily from scratch. Rick’s penchant for premium ingredients includes using specially sourced non-GMO flour, spring water, sea salt, local free-range eggs and chicken, local pasture-raised beef, and local, seasonal produce.
Saucy’s fresh lasagna is legendary. There are eleven layers: five layers of herb and garlic-infused sheets, five layers of sauce, ricotta cheese in the middle, finished with a layer of mozzarella. Four varieties made daily: Vegetarian, Fire Roasted Red Pepper, Beef Bolognese, and Chicken Breast Cacciatore. Fresh, frozen, and gluten-free are available. If you prefer to make your own lasagna, fresh lasagna sheets are available.

The key to keeping cool Few things beat summer heat better than walking into a comfortable air-conditioned home. Air conditioning is often taken for granted but sorely missed when it is not working. The key to keeping cool all summer long is to ensure that air conditioning systems are functioning properly. Maintaining an A/C unit can save money and protect homeowners’ investments. Without regular attention, an A/C unit will lose its efficiency, needlessly wasting both energy and money as a result. Poor maintenance also can lead to system failure just when it is needed most. The average lifespan of an air conditioning unit is about 15 to 20 years. With regular maintenance, homeowners can keep their units humming properly and avoid premature replacement costs. So, what can homeowners expect as it pertains to air conditioner maintenance? The following are some oft-needed checks and fixes. • Keep it clean. Vacuum the fins and coils of the A/C unit on the external compressor/ condenser fan with a softbristled brush. This may require unscrewing the metal box surrounding the unit to access the fins. Remove any accumulated debris that may be impeding airflow. Afterward, go inside and change the installed filter with the evaporator located in a central duct near the furnace. Inspect the filter periodically to see if it is soiled and needs replacement. Timing can vary depending on various factors, such as the time of year, dust accumulation, and whether or not pets live in the home.
Relax, leave the cleaning to us!

• Straighten coil fins. The fins on the condenser are easily bent, affecting the flow of air through the coils. If you cannot easily straighten them, then consult with an HVAC professional to do so. • Check the thermostat. Ensure that the thermostat is still working correctly. You also may want to upgrade an old thermostat to a programmable or smart thermostat that enables you to set and adjust the temperature remotely.
NORTHERN STABLE SUPPLY LUXURY WIDE PLANK FLOORS
• Consider an in-line duct booster. HVAC professionals can guide you through the advantages of an in-line duct booster for forced-air cooling. This can increase the flow of cool air into a room that always seems hotter than the rest. Another option is a vent or register booster fan sitting on top or replacing a traditional floor or wall register. • Deal with condensation. Condensation from air conditioning coils can puddle around the furnace if the condensate drain tube is clogged. Clearing it out will help prevent puddling and the formation of bacteria-laden water in the system. Periodic maintenance of an A/C unit will keep it in good repair and working efficiently. Signs your HVAC unit could be fading: HVAC systems are worth their weight in gold during the dog days of summer. Of course, such systems must be replaced from time to time. Learning to recognize the signs of a fading HVAC system can help homeowners replace their units before they cease working, saving everyone the uncomfortable ordeal of being stuck at home without cool air on hot summer days. • Weak airflow. An HVAC unit operating at peak capacity produces a strong airflow through the vents of a home. When the airflow from the vent is weak, this could be a warning sign of a damaged A/C compressor or blocked or damaged vents. Damaged vents might be replaceable, but issues with the A/C unit might require a replacement. That’s especially so if the unit is old. Repairs might be possible, but it might be more cost-effective to replace an aging unit rather than commit to costly repairs.

• Excessive moisture around the unit. Excessive moisture around the unit may indicate that its refrigerant is leaking. Large pools of water around the unit could contribute to mould growth and floor damage. Homeowners should contact a qualified HVAC technician immediately if they notice any leakage or moisture issues around their units. • Interior temperature. If your home is not quite the respite from the summer heat that it once was, despite the A/C being on and running, then this could be indicative of a (continued on page 26)

fading system that may need to be replaced. Hot interior temperatures may be indicative of clogged ductwork. Qualified HVAC technicians may be able to fix clogged ductwork without replacing the A/C unit. If the issue persists even after ducts have been cleaned and unclogged, then a new unit might be homeowners’ best bet. • Foul odour. Sometimes, the nose knows best when an A/C unit needs to be replaced. Unusual odours emanating from the vents when the A/C is on suggest that the unit is distributing mould or mildew throughout the home. A mouldy or mildew-like smell coming from the vents could indicate a host of issues including a dirty evaporator coil, a clogged drain line, or leaky air ducts. Each of these issues can be fixed; but homeowners must weigh the cost of repairing them versus replacing an aging unit.

Safety a vital component of DIY projects at home Many homeowners enjoy DIY projects around the house. Having the right tools and correctly using them is essential to successful, safe projects. Tools are vital for projects, but without proper understanding and usage, they can cause grave injuries. Certain tools are more likely to cause injuries than others. Power nailers, for example, are among the most dangerous tools DIYers can use. Chain saws, table saws, circular saws, and riding mowers are some additional tools that have very high injury rates. The following are some safety guidelines you should heed when using power tools: • Use tools that are the right size and the right type for the job. If you are uncertain about which tools to use, watch online tutorials, contact tool manufacturers, or seek advice at home supply stores.
Uses up to 50%** less energy to heat your home.
• Always wear eye protection and the proper safety equipment when manufacturers recommend doing so. Gloves, sturdy work boots, hearing protection, and hard hats can protect DIYers from injury.

• Keep cutting tools sharp and in good condition to reduce kickback and potential injuries.

• Regularly inspect tools to make sure they are in working order. • Never carry tools up a ladder by hand; use a bucket or bag to hoist tools. • Never leave tools lying out in any area where they can present a hazard. Unplug power tools when not in use. • Secure work with a clamp or vice grip when appropriate to keep things from slipping. • Ensure that the handles of tools like hammers and axes fit tightly into the head of the tool. • Keep work environments tidy to avoid clutter, as cluttered workspaces can contribute to accidents.

Nicole started her career in music, graduating from the University of Toronto in music and then going on to get her Master’s Degree in violin at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. Nicole played for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Canadian Opera Company, then went on to tour with both the Montreal and Toronto Symphonies. After having her four children, she set her sights on custom home building and renovations, which naturally took her into Real Estate. Nicole is a native Torontonian but has spent a large part of her life watching her kids barrel down the slopes in ski races in the Collingwood area and developed a passion and understanding of the Southern Georgian Bay market equally as well. After achieving her honours BSc in Physics and Chemistry at the University of Toronto, Linda travelled the world as a ski instructor and attended the Sorbonne in Paris to graduate with a Diploma in French Civilization and Language. Once home, Linda pursued a career in marketing, working with CTV, City TV, CKVR, Global TV, and, finally, with Corus and HGTV, where she curated partnerships between global brands and national programming. Linda’s father, Archie Kay, was a founding member of Craigleith Ski Club after immigrating to Canada from Scotland in the 1950s. As a result, Linda has grown up surrounded by the beauty of the Southern Georgian Bay area and, although a Toronto native, had always vowed to one day call it home.

HOME & PROPERTY HOME INSPECTION for peace of mind when you are buying a home
Many homes do not have space for guest rooms, kids’ play areas, and home theater lounges that are possible in homes with substantial square footage. But they may not be missing out at all.
PRE-LISTING INSPECTION
to make your home easier to market and sell
While large homes remain popular, many people are embracing the benefits of smaller residences. Small homes help homeowners save money, require less maintenance, have a less environmental impact, and reduce the temptation to accumulate “stuff.”
MAINTENANCE INSPECTION
when you own a home and want to know what to look after
Owners of small homes or apartments can still enjoy the benefits of larger spaces; they just need to equip rooms to perform double duty. Living room/guest room Entertaining guests is easier when there’s a dedicated space where visitors can feel at home. When furnishing a living room, keep the guest room in mind. A sofa that opens up to a bed or a convertible sectional can be a comfortable place for guests to lay their heads. Side tables provide guests with places to store their belongings, and an empty storage chest can house bed linens or guests’ clothing.

A trundle sofa bed enables overnight guests to sleep comfortably right in the living room or den. Den/playroom Children tend to accumulate toys and games. As kids grow from children to young adults, their list of must-have items - from video gaming systems to other electronics - grows along with them. Storage can make a room functional for both adults and children. Devote an entire wall to a closet or drawer system where toys can be stored out of sight when necessary. Storage ottomans can be used for extra seating while also providing a place to stash stuffed animals or games. When choosing furniture, look for fabrics resistant to stains and modular pieces that can be moved around as necessary to create room for playing or entertaining. Bedroom/home office Working from home or bringing work home means needing a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoire-style desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors. Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to house a laptop during the day.

How to keep gardens safe in summer heat waves Many plants will require a little extra help Summer is a season to relax and enjoy the warm weather. Basking in the summer sun is a great way to relax, but only when the temperatures are safe. Summer heatwaves can compromise the health of human beings as well as their pets. Gardening enthusiasts also may need to go the extra mile to keep their plants and gardens from wilting under harsh summer sun. Extreme heat stress can be very harmful to plants. The online gardening resource Gardening Know How notes that some plants can withstand summer heatwaves better than others. For example, succulents conserve water in their leaves, helping them to withstand heat waves when the dog days of summer arrive. But, succulents are unique, and many plants will require a little extra help to fight a heatwave. Gardeners need not wait until the heat arrives to protect their plants from searing summer heat. • Take a proactive approach with mulch. The sustainable living experts at Eartheasy recommend utilizing light-coloured mulch during heat waves. Such mulch will reflect the sunlight and help to maintain cooler surface soil conditions. Eartheasy even notes that grass clippings, once they’ve turned from green to light brown, can make for the perfect mulch to protect plants from the heat. Clippings also are free, making them a cost-effective solution.
• Water wisely. Water only helps plants withstand heatwaves if it’s applied effectively. If water is only applied in short bursts and not long enough to penetrate to the root zone, roots will stay near the surface. In such instances, roots will dry out during a heatwave, and plants won’t make it through the season. Timing also is essential when watering. Eartheasy recommends watering in the morning to avoid heat scald and also ensure as little water is lost to evaporation as possible. When watering during a heatwave, do so by hand rather than through a sprinkler. Hand watering allows gardeners to direct all of the water onto the plants that need it most during a heatwave. • Let your plants pitch in. When planting new plants, gardeners must recognize it takes time for these plants to establish their roots, so they’re strong enough to withstand heatwaves. In the meantime, strategic planting can help them make it through their first heatwaves unscathed. Eartheasy notes that planting taller, more established plants can provide new plants with shade that can help them survive heatwaves. Just make sure new plants can still get the sun they need to thrive.

Outdoor televisions up the ante in outdoor living areas
HOME & PROPERTY
Outdoor living areas provide a great way for homeowners to spend more time outdoors doing the things they love. That includes watching their favourite shows. Many homeowners take televisions designed for indoors outside when hosting game watches or movie nights under the stars. While such televisions can function outdoors, unless they’re specifically designed for outdoor use, chances are they are not protected against the elements. Special enclosures built to protect indoor televisions can do just that, but homeowners also can consider televisions designed for outdoor use. Outdoor televisions have become more popular as more and more homeowners look to extend their living spaces outdoors, and these uniquely designed televisions can often withstand elements like rain without losing their functionality. Many outdoor televisions also are designed to handle reflection from the sun, ensuring that homeowners won’t have to limit their outdoor viewing experiences to evenings or late nights when the sun has set. When shopping for outdoor televisions, consumers should do their homework and pay attention to features they may not consider when shopping for indoor televisions. For example, outdoor televisions should offer:
glass sales and installation glass railings & showers metal railings and stairs welding and machining stainless steel • general repair transportation
• wide viewing angles, as backyards tend to be bigger than living rooms, allowing people seated all over the yard to view the screen • higher brightness, reduced glare to provide an ideal viewing experience in brighter outdoor environments • designed to handle rain, snow, dust, insects, salt air (if applicable), humidity and extreme temperatures Ultimately, if you can afford to, buying a TV that's designed for outdoor use will ensure that even if the weather gets a little crazy, your TV should remain unscathed – and you don't have to worry about perfectly sealing up your TV when you're not using it either. That's true even under a covered patio.

Make safety an important part of home cleaning Safety may not be on the minds of people when they gather equipment and cleaning supplies to clean their homes, but even seemingly innocuous items can be dangerous. As a result, accidents and even deaths may occur when least expected - including when doing chores around the house. Therefore, it’s essential to be careful when cleaning around the house, and part of that caution includes recognizing where hazards may be lurking. Here are ways to prevent cleaning and organizing accidents. Read labels Read the manufacturer's label for warnings and directions before using products. Remember that the labels of strong commercial products may not list all hazardous chemical ingredients. Never mix cleansers Cleaning chemicals are often effective because they employ bases or acids to produce cleaning actions. Many of these products are generally safe to use by themselves, provided users adhere to the usage instructions and precautions. However, when mixed, certain cleaning products can be extremely hazardous. Users should never mix products containing acids and bases. Common cleaning products containing acids include: tub and tile cleaners, vinegar and mould removers. Products containing bases include: bleaches, glass cleaners, and drain cleaners. Mixing these products can produce toxic gases, intense heat, or even explosions. Specifically, never mix ammonia with chlorine bleach, toilet bowl cleaners, rust removers, or oven cleaners. And never mix household bleach containing sodium hypochlorite with acidic products like vinegar, toilet bowl cleaners, or liquid dishwasher detergent. Store safely Store cleaners and chemicals in well-ventilated areas away from HVAC intake vents; this helps prevent any fumes from spreading to other areas of the facility. Reseal opened chemical products tightly. Never store your cleaners in empty food or drink containers - they be mistaken as edible or potable.

Avoid falls Falls are a significant contributor to home injuries. Be especially careful when climbing ladders, and do not lean too far to either side. If possible, have someone hold the ladder steady. Wear nonskid shoes and go slowly. Do not climb on furniture or stack items to reach high spots like top shelves, as this can create a precarious situation. Lift with care Moving furniture or rearranging storage boxes can strain the back and other muscles. Instead, use proper lifting techniques, which include lifting with the legs while keeping the back straight. If the item is too heavy, wait and ask for help. Wear masks and safety gear Whether dusting off the ceiling fan, cleaning out the crawlspace, or removing debris from gutters and downspouts, protect the eyes, hands, and lungs by wearing the right gear. Safety goggles, durable gloves, and a dust mask are must-have cleaning supplies. Ventilate your work area when using strong cleaning products.

How to design a fitness room at home People exercise for many different reasons. Exercise can improve one’s appearance, reduce the risk for illness, alleviate stress or anxiety, and even help pass some time. Exercise is often a social activity, but in the wake of social distancing guidelines issued in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, many people have found themselves looking for ways to exercise at home.

weights, a medicine ball, and a yoga mat can be all you need to create a versatile, effective workout. A TRX system and a door-mounted pull-up bar also are great space-saving options.
Building a home fitness room has never been a more timely project, and such a project can continue to provide rewards even when life returns to some semblance of normalcy. Here’s how to successfully stock a home gym. • Find a dedicated space. A home gym will be limited by the amount of space that can be devoted to workouts. Possible fitness room locations include a spare bedroom, a garage, a basement, or an enclosed patio. Measure the space so you can pick and choose equipment that will fit. Leave some floor space empty for movement exercises or mat activities. • Keep the space bright. Darkness can sap energy levels, so invest in mirrors and adequate overhead lighting to make the space inviting. Natural light can make the exercise area more enjoyable. • Consider the flooring. New flooring can protect against damage and make an area more conducive to working out. Rubber mats can offset echoes and reduce the noise of running on a treadmill or setting down heavy weights. • Use space-saving equipment. A home gym space will likely not be as expansive as the space inside a traditional fitness center. Thankfully, many activities do not require a lot of space or equipment. Classic exercises like squats, lunges, push-ups, and situps require little gear but still produce results. Figure out which equipment you like the most and invest in two or three key pieces. Simple ways to incorporate reclaimed wood in your home Homes come in many sizes and styles. Whether your home is a palatial postmodern masterpiece or a cozy farmhouse, reclaimed wood can be utilized to create an aweinspiring interior. Reclaimed wood taken from old or demolished homes built with old-growth forest wood offers access to this highly valued building material while also providing the environmental benefits that come with reusing existing materials. Reclaimed wood can be incorporated into a home’s interior rather easily, and the results are often stunning.
Furniture Reclaimed wood also can be put to use, or reuse, as furniture. A home office desk made from reclaimed wood can be both stunning and sturdy, while end tables and coffee tables made from reclaimed wood can add some unique character to a living room.

Homeowners who want their bedrooms to give off the vibe of a rustic retreat can consider adding an accent wall made of reclaimed wood.

Kitchen islands: Homeowners who aspire to have a farmhouse kitchen can consider reclaimed wood when creating their kitchen islands. Reclaimed wood can be used to make the body of the island, complete with cabinets and drawers, that sits beneath the countertop where cooks will prepare their meals. Storage beds: Guest rooms tend to be smaller than other rooms in the house, and that means little room for furniture like dressers. Rather than cramming lots of furniture into a small room, homeowners can utilize reclaimed wood to create storage bed frames. The frames won’t take up extra space in the room, reassuring guests that they won’t be spending a weekend in cramped quarters. And the rustic look of reclaimed wood storage beds can be an instant stunner when guests arrive.

Charge up your car battery knowledge Vehicles consist of many essential components to keep them running efficiently and effectively. Therefore, car and truck owners should have an understanding of how their vehicles function so they can diagnose and address problems as they arise. Car batteries are an essential component of any vehicle. Even though engines are the powerhouse of any car or truck, without a battery, the engine wouldn’t work. Car batteries work by providing a jolt of electricity necessary to power all the vehicle’s electrical components, achieved through a chemical reaction that changes chemical energy into the electrical energy needed to deliver voltage to the starter. In addition to initially starting the car, the battery also keeps the electric current steady to keep the engine running.
sluggish and takes longer to start, it may mean the battery is beginning to fail. • Frequent, short trips: Drivers who make frequent, short trips may find their car batteries do not have time to recharge fully. This, coupled with overtaxing thanks to a lot of accessory use, may cause the battery and the alternator to have shortened life spans. • Low battery fluid levels: If the fluid level is below the energy conductor inside, it is often indicative of overcharging and excessive heat. • Corrosion: Corrosion buildup, dust, dirt, and grime on battery connections may cause performance problems. Inspecting and cleaning the terminals can prolong the battery life.
The battery also works in conjunction with the alternator to power the electronics in the car. While the vehicle is running, the alternator reverses the current produced by the battery, recharging it as a result. This happens during long journeys, so people who drive for short bursts of time may find that their batteries will not have a chance to recharge and may not have the longevity desired.
• Odours and leaks: Battery leaks can produce a sulfur odour similar to the smell of a rotten egg. This can become problematic over time, and leaks may indicate an aging or damaged battery.
There is quite literally a lot riding on a functioning battery. No one wants to be caught stranded by a dead battery, so drivers may wonder if there are any indicators that may signal the battery needs replacement. • Slow turnover: If a vehicle does not immediately start or if the cranking is

FOR SUMMER?
• Age: Most batteries have a finite life span. A well-maintained battery can last up to five years. Neglect can reduce that life expectancy considerably. • Bloated or cracked battery case: Replace the battery immediately if the case is cracking, as it could be because excessive heat is swelling the battery. Understanding how car batteries work can help drivers keep their cars running smoothly.

Stay comfortable & alert on road trips Few car enthusiasts can resist the siren song of the open road. When the open road beckons, answering its call can open the door to adventure and unending possibilities. Road trips tend to dwindle when winter arrives, and for good reason. Wet, wintry conditions can make roads more dangerous and compromise motorists’ visibility. Many drivers wisely avoid the roads as much as possible in winter, and statistics on crash deaths reflect that caution. As motorists prepare to hit the road again this spring, they should keep these tips in mind to ensure their road trips are as safe as they are adventurous. Get ample rest, even if that means making frequent stops Drivers should build frequent stops and nightly rest into their road trips. Doing so can help to combat the drowsiness that develops when spending long hours behind the wheel staring at the road ahead. Drivers should pay attention to how they’re feeling and pull over if their eyes begin to feel heavy or their minds begin to wander. Each of these are signs of fatigue that could prove deadly to drivers, their passengers and fellow motorists.

Share driving duties Sharing driving duties is a great way to reduce driving-related eye strain. The Vision Council notes that driving requires the eyes to stay in constant motion as they focus and refocus on approaching objects. Eyes also are in constant contention with distractions like oncoming headlights or the glare of the sun. These factors combine to strain the eyes. As drivers spend more and more time behind the wheel, their eyes become tired and their vision becomes less reliable. Sharing driving duties can ensure a fresh set of eyes is behind the wheel at all times. Maintain proper posture Proper posture can make drivers less susceptible to the aches and pains that can develop during long car trips. In addition, the auto insurance provider Geico® notes that studies have shown that proper posture, which involves sitting an appropriate distance from the steering wheel, makes drivers less likely to suffer severe injuries to the head, neck and chest in frontand rear-end collisions. Road trips make for great getaways. By taking steps to remain comfortable and alert behind the wheel, drivers can make road trips that much more enjoyable.

BUSINESS PROFILE:
LIVE YOUR LIFE: AS FEARLESS, RESPECTFUL, CARING & SHARING WOMEN LEADERS Nancy Griffin created Women, Worth & Wellness® in 1994, when as a Private Client Wealth Advisor, for her female clients and their families. It is a brand for boomer women and their daughters, designed to inspire and inform women how to enhance their personal wellness and independent economic power. It is a circular mission of being healthy first; then confident and fearless; to do well professionally, whatever your role is at work or home; and then share your wealth, as you can, in an inclusive way that enhances families and communities. While doing so, you’re enhancing both your net worth and self-worth through your generosity. Sharing is an attitude of inclusivity while caring for others’ worth and wellness.
UPCOMING “WOMEN, WORTH & WELLNESS®” EVENTS FOR FALL 2021: With much gratitude to Paul Chapman, CIM®, MBA, BESc RBC Investment & Wealth Advisor, Collingwood for bringing alive and hosting these very special Women, Worth & Wellness® events!
Women often place their own needs second to everything/everyone else’s: their career, their business, their spouse, their children and parents. Women appreciate the importance of health and financial fundamentals - and have good intentions to take care of them, but often do not make them the priority. Nancy emphasizes the importance of “stepping up” to your own needs and education first, to understand and appreciate various options and approaches so that you can lead the way to help yourself and others in decision making toward personal worth and wellness. When you address these many and varied complexities, you will feel “on top of the world!” There is a cornucopia of “leading ladies” in Southern Georgian Bay, and philanthropy is the new economic power opportunity for women. Women’s wellness, worth, and leadership, in every facet of any community, makes a very vibrant, diverse, sustainable, and caring community for all. By 2026, women will control over half of all accumulated wealth in Canada. Women will also be stewarding incredible wealth going forward as they earn more, inherit more from their parents and spouses, and often live longer than their spouses. This reality is an incredible economic power opportunity for women. Not only do health and wealth go hand in hand, but self-worth and net worth are co-dependent. Self-worth comes from many things, especially owning decisions made and “having a seat and voice at the table,” which goes a long way to being a leader in your own life and that of your family and community. In the past, and sometimes today, women have been excluded, ignored, avoided, overlooked, but with money, women have economic power, and power gives you options and choices for your decisions. Economic independence for women is therefore crucial to long-term success for decisions in your life. Today, women have a powerful opportunity to steward their wealth for themselves, families and communities. Women championing other women, especially to be healthy, is extremely powerful. For example, Nancy has been a committed supporter of Women’s College Hospital, Toronto, since 1992 and started their first Women, Worth & Wellness® Golf Tournament for Women in 1994. Nancy Griffin is a connector and influencer. She attributes her success to caring about and respecting others’ wellness, personal leadership, determination, and pure joy when focusing on women’s health and wealth, hence creating Women, Worth & Wellness®. Nancy enjoys every opportunity to inform and inspire women about their personal worth and wellness - both net worth and self-worth… so women feel grateful, kind, respectful, caring, fabulous, generous, joyful, gracious and literally on top of their lives - where they’ve been and where they’re going! Nancy has recently joined WEALTHinsurance.com as a Legacy Advisor for Accomplished Women, building on the complete aspect of women’s health and wealth, net worth and self-worth, philanthropy and legacy planning. Nancy will be working with several nonprofit organizations, families, individuals, foundations, family offices and business owners to increase women’s philanthropy for women’s health and wellness.

Stonebridge Town Centre
is an outdoor shopping, dining and recreation venue in the east end of Wasaga Beach, home to the perfect blend of restaurants, retail outlets, services and amenities that make this location the definition of one-stop shopping.
By 2014 the Stonebridge Town Centre family had grown to include My Computer Store, Dollar Tree, Sunset Grill, Century 21, Wasaga Beach Decorating, Liberty Tax, FYidoctors, Stonebridge Dentistry and Tim Hortons.
More than just a place to shop and dine, the Town Centre is also part of a neighbourhood of homes built with loving care by the Stonebridge Building Group. This beach community is just steps from the world’s longest freshwater beach, and was a decade in the making. When you visit, you’ll see why it is such a great success. Homeowners here like the easy convenience of having the amenities of the Stonebridge Town Centre at their doorstep.
2014 also marked the opening of the trails that wind their way through the neighbourhood, parkland, ponds and trees that are part of the community. As more homes and facilities are built, new trails, landscaping and naturalization are being added.
The first vendors to move in, back in 2010, were KFC, Bamboo Terrace, The UPS Store, TD Canada Trust, Boston Pizza, Wild Wing, Swiss Chalet, Harvey’s, Supercuts, Global Pet Foods, Bulk Barn and Walmart. The fact that these establishments are just minutes from Beach One established the Town Centre as a destination for residents and tourists alike. Beginning in 2011, the Town Centre became a music venue with Wasaga Beach Blues, a weekend long blues festival which will soon celebrate its tenth anniversary. Art in the Park, Jazz in the Park, Snowman Mania, Canada Day and other events are well known in the community from past years. This year, the Stonebridge Town Centre will be host to the Back to the Beach Concert Series (August 14 + 28, September 4 starting at 1pm) 3 FREE afternoons of fun and live music.
If you’re ever looking for Santa Claus, he can be found at the Stonebridge Town Centre during the month of December (until he has to fly). He takes suggestions, collects “naughty or nice” data and will even sit for a photo with your dog. Last year, visits were virtual, but we all hope this year he can get back to meeting guests in person.
So come for a stroll, come for a meal or come to do your weekly shopping -Stonebridge Town Centre has what you need.
Over the last several years, more vendors have set up shop, including Active Healthcare, Osmow’s, Wasaga Nail Spa, Wasaga Society for the Arts and Beach Booster Media. And just this year the Town Centre was pleased to welcome Sessions Cannabis and Merle Norman Cosmetics and Day Spa to the mix. We like to say, “We have everything you need in Wasaga Beach” and it has never been more true than it is today. This summer The Beachbox has opened up shop next to the on-site ball hockey rink. The Beachbox is a Multi Sport Beach facility for adult Beach Volleyball Leagues, youth training and kids Multi-sport Camps. The NSP BEACHBOX will also be the new home of the Not So Pro Beach Volleyball Tour, returning to Wasaga Beach this July.

Recruits fundraise thousands for Soldier On While many Canadians are still enjoying the last couple hours of a restful night’s sleep, new recruits on Basic Military Qualification Course (BMQ) 0266 at the 4th Canadian Division Training Centre (4 CDTC) in Meaford are dashing out for their early morning physical training at 6am. An hour later, they’re racing to get showeredup in time to put the last polish on their parade boots before morning inspection at 8am. With a jam-packed course schedule from morning till well past dinner time, one would rightfully assume that spare time to fundraise over $2800 for Soldier On would not be easily achieved - but then again, achieving the impossible is what these future soldiers are trained to do. The fundraising mission started back in mid June 2021, in the midst of the second provincial lockdown in Ontario, when Master Corporal (MCpl) Daniel Fraser did a long stare at his reflection in his bathroom mirror and realized that a haircut was past due. The shaggy hair, a style that would make any Regimental Sergeant Major cringe, sparked a fundraising idea in MCpl Fraser. “Later that day,” explained MCpl Fraser, “I was sitting in the office talking with some of the other course staff mostly joking around about collecting donations to allow the recruits to shave my hair off, and that is when Sergeant Justyn Acaster said to me, why not? It’s a good cause. Do it.” With the encouragement from his platoon, MCpl Fraser
contacted Jamie Macintyre, a combat Veteran now employed as Soldier On’s Regional Coordinator, to collaborate on a fundraising campaign at 4 CDTC. Soldier On is a program of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) which contributes to the recovery of ill and injured CAF members and veterans by providing opportunities and resources through sport, recreational, and creative activities. Since 2007, Soldier On has supported over 6500 ill and injured members using sport and physical recreational activities to enable social support, build confidence in their abilities and realize their full potential. With all the fundraising details settled by the end of June, MCpl Fraser approached the recruits on BMQ 0266 with his fundraising proposal. “I basically told the course about Soldier On at an orders group, and that if they raised enough money, the recruits could shave my hair off. My hope at that time was that the recruits would fundraise something around $300,” explained MCpl Fraser, “but what actually occurred exceeded everyone’s expectations by far.”

Back in their shacks, while prepping for the next day’s inspection and completing assigned homework, the recruits of BMQ 0266 were devising their own operation plan to fundraise as much as they possibly could amongst themselves. “We donated what we could from our pockets,” explained Private Recruit Chase Comeau. Over the course of a few hours, tens of dollars became hundreds of dollars, and by the end of the day, hundreds became thousands - $2875.00 to be exact. “It was something that we, as a platoon, became committed to doing. It was really a great way to build a sense of team camaraderie, and it also made us feel like we were doing something for our new military family,” said Private Recruit Zachary Brubacher. The impressive amount raised not only caught the attention of the course staff, but also the leadership at 4 CDTC. “I think they did a great thing,” said Major Robert Andrushko, the officer commanding Charlie Company. “It highlights the charity and generosity of a new era of recruit.” The recruits of BMQ 0266 will graduate on August 29, 2021 and will be sent on their next level of training at various training establishments throughout the country.
