SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN

DECEMBER 2019

PITCHING THE DRAGONS On October 30th, the 11th annual Meaford Dragons attracted a talented group of local entrepreneurs - all vying for $16,150 in cash and in-kind prizes. Armed with big dreams and business plans, each made their heartfelt pitch to a panel of five dragons. One presentation stood out among the rest... Free Sprit Forest and Nature School by Kim and Matt Simpson, taking home the grand prize including the Rotary Club of Meaford’s Audience Choice award! Other candidates and prize winners were: Pampered Paw Spa, PostingsK9, Silk Family Homestead, and Back Forty Glamping. The future looks brights for them all, especially when the business is customized for the community it serves. Photos/Story by Marissa Dolotallas. See more photos on www.georgianlife.ca

LEST WE FORGET Remembrance Day is a time to reflect, remember and respect and Collingwood, as she always does, did just that as hundreds made time to attend the service at the cenotaph. Reflecting upon the horrors of war, remembering fallen loved ones and paying respect to those who have served and continue to serve in defense of our country and our freedom. As year-end is quickly approaching, taking some time to review your financial affairs may lead to significant tax savings. Here are a couple common year-end tax planning strategies. Tax Loss Selling If you have realized capital gains during 2019, you might want to consider selling securities in a loss position, to help offset the gains. A capital loss must first be applied against any capital gains you realize in the current year. Once the capital gains for the current year have been offset, the balance of the loss can be either carried back three years (against gains realized in 2016, 2017 or 2018) or carried forward indefinitely. Investments that are in a loss position and no longer meet your investment objectives might be a good idea to sell for the purpose of triggering the tax loss.

With the markets seeing such strong growth this year, you may hold securities in your portfolio with significant gains. As an alternative to cash donations, you can also donate publicly listed securities in-kind to registered charities without having to pay tax on the realized capital gain. This is a wonderful opportunity to support a qualified charity, while reducing your total taxes payable. Not only do you avoid paying tax on the capital gain, but you also receive a donation tax receipt for the full fair market value of the security at the time of the donation. If you plan on donating securities in-kind this holiday season, ensure you start this process early. The final day to make contributions to a registered charity in order to claim the donation tax receipt on your 2019 income tax return is December 31, 2019. These type of transactions can take up to a week to process. HIKING HOME FOR SHELTER Linda Murphy, of Collingwood, spent five and a half months of 2019 walking from the Mexican border to British Columbia, along the Pacific Crest Trail to raise awareness and funds to support My Friends House. My Friends House offers shelter, practical support and counselling to abused women and their children in the area. Linda maintained her commitment throughout the trek because she believed in the power of people supporting each other. On November 15th, Gerard Buckley threw a party at the Collingwood Legion and over 150 people gathered to welcome her home and support the cause along with her. Linda was ecstatic to present a cheque for $27,000 and the event raised an additional $4050! Photo submitted by: Gordon Llewellyn

Ted Yoannou: In Your Corner Time to Call Out the Cancel Culture Enough with cancel culture. Defined as “a form of boycott in which someone, typically a celebrity, has shared a questionable opinion or has had problematic behaviour called out. That person is then “cancelled,” which essentially means they’re boycotted by a large number of people, sometimes leading to massive declines in the person’s fanbase and career”, cancel culture is quick to rush to judgment, all with a “holier than thou” smugness coming from the attackers, as if everything is black and white and they themselves have no regrettable actions in their pasts. Recently, we’ve had the Don Cherry and the Jess Allen affairs. First, Cherry’s “you people” rant, seemingly directed at the GTA’s immigrant population, expressing his dismay with the lack of poppy popularity this past Remembrance Day. And then, The Social’s Jess Allen’s attack on Cherry and her experience with hockey players as “white boys who weren’t… very nice… not generally thoughtful and… often bullies”, which was quick to draw an angry response from Canadians across the country, likely most vehemently from those hockey moms who might happen to watch her show. Cherry stubbornly refused to apologize and was dismissed from his weekly gig on Coach’s Corner, after over 30 years as a national icon. Allen was able to hold on to her job, but not after she and her network, CTV, apologized and back tracked on the comments. Allen will undoubtedly think twice before she dare express a controversial opinion again.

The Promise of Christmas

There was a time when Christmas meant that something very good was about to happen. But, as we get older, life gets complicated, and we lose our child-like appreciation of it. Is this time of year difficult for you? We would like you to know that Christmas will come, good things will happen, and the new year is waiting for us to greet it. And, we think that’s something worth looking forward to...

Rather than the “trial, judgment and sentence” that takes place in today’s social media spotlight in about 24 hours after an action is brought to light, and often without any further comment or input from the now “cancelled” person, how about letting some time pass for some much needed calm debate and sober reflection? Wouldn’t it have been instructive to have Cherry and Allen interviewed together on an hour long program after this firestorm and let them explain themselves in a meaningful dialogue, something a lot more reflective of their views, beyond the original 30 second soundbites on live TV that landed them in cancel culture prison? Whatever happened to free speech and civil discourse?

In the midst of 2019’s ugly cancel culture, it was so refreshing to hear Barack Obama’s recent words of advice to today’s young people and aspiring activists, “this idea of purity and you’re never compromised, and you’re always politically ‘woke’ and all that stuff, you should get over that quickly. The world is messy, there are ambiguities. People who do really good stuff have flaws. People who you are fighting may love their kids, and share certain things with you… (calling people out), that’s not activism. That’s not bringing about change. If all you’re doing is casting stones, you’re probably not going to get that far”.

TOY

DRIVE

THESE ADVERTISERS HAVE ALL DONATED TO A LOCAL TOY DRIVE HOW TO GET YOUR KIDS INVOLVED IN CHARITABLE GIVNG THIS SEASON As the holidays approach, your kids will soon become more excited for the first snowfall, gift-giving and smells of baked goods wafting from the kitchen. But now is also the perfect time to teach your little ones about charitable giving. Here are four ways to encourage your kid to give back. Participate in a toy drive. Many schools and workplaces take part in a local toy drive, an easy way to give to a child in need. If your kids’ school or your workplace doesn’t participate in one, try creating your own or buying a toy and gifting it through a drive at the mall. You can even get your kids to help you pick out a special toy to give away. Collect items for a local food bank. While at the grocery store together, have your child help pick out non-perishable food items for your local food bank. Another great way to gift food is through grocery stores, which put together pre-packaged bags full of goods that can be purchased and dropped in a bin located in the store so you can skip having to make the drop-off yourself.

Volunteer. There are plenty of charities that require extra help to sort toys, clothes and even turkeys. Local volunteer centres are a good place to start. They can help connect you and your kids with opportunities in your community. Write a letter. Every year, Amnesty International’s Write for Rights campaign encourages people around the world to send messages of solidarity speaking up about human rights abuses to changemakers. This year’s campaign is focusing on 10 cases of young people from across the globe who are leading fights for justice, including the Indigenous youth of Grassy Narrows First Nation in northwestern Ontario. After gathering supplies, invite kids to tie the scraps of ribbon down the twig or cinnamon stick. For best results, bunch the ribbons close together. The ribbons will bend and slightly overlap. Gently tug them into place until you are satisfied with their placement. Use sharp scissors to trim the ribbon scraps into the shape of a Christmas tree. If desired, melt the edges of the ribbons with a match so the ribbon doesn’t fray. Hot glue or tie a loop of twine to the top of the tree. If desired, top the tree with a wooden star, yellow button, or primitive metal star.

Jolly old Saint Nicholas, Lean your ear this way! Don’t you tell a single soul What I’m going to say; Christmas Eve is coming soon; Now, you dear old man, Whisper what you’ll bring to me; Tell me if you can. When the clock is striking twelve, When I’m fast asleep, Down the chimney broad and black, With your pack you’ll creep; All the stockings you will find Hanging in a row; Mine will be the shortest one, You’ll be sure to know. Johnny wants a pair of skates; Susy wants a dolly; Nellie wants a story book; She thinks dolls are folly; As for me, my little brain Isn’t very bright; Choose for me, old Santa Claus, What you think is right

LET IT SNOW! Oh, the weather outside is frightful, But the fire is so delightful, And since we’ve no place to go, Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. It doesn’t show signs of stopping, And I brought some corn for popping; The lights are turned way down low, Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. When we finally say good night, How I’ll hate going out in the storm; But if you really hold me tight, All the way home I’ll be warm. The fire is slowly dying, And, my dear, we’re still good-bye-ing, But as long as you love me so. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

THIS CAN BE A DIFFICULT TIME FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH HEARING LOSS The holiday season is here and for many of us that means getting together with family and friends, attending parties, and spending time with loved ones. This can be a difficult time for individuals with hearing loss. Below are some tips to help improve communication for family members and for those with hearing loss. • Ensure you have the person’s attention before speaking. Many individuals with hearing loss have difficulty locating sound and may use lip/speechreading to aid in hearing. • Speaking face-to-face is very important. Sound does not always travel well from room to room and even with hearing aids the person may not catch what is being said. • Slow down! A common complaint is that people tend to speak too quickly – try to speak at a natural pace and enunciate clearly. • Reduce background noise or competing sound sources. • Shouting or speaking loudly does not tend to help. It can sometimes be perceived that you are angry with them. • Rephrase rather than repeat if the person does not hear or understand what you have said. Some words are easier to hear or lip-read than others. Tips to improve communication when an individual has hearing loss: • Ask people to repeat or rephrase if you miss what was said. You can also verify what they have said to make sure you heard or understood correctly. • Be aware of other competing sound sources in your environment. If possible, turn the noises off or move to a less noisy location. • Be close to the person or object you want to hear. • Anticipate your listening environment and plan ahead, i.e. choose restaurants that are quieter or go when it is less busy. • Be patient and honest with others. If you cannot hear what someone is saying, make sure to let them know. • Involve family members or friends when going to appointments. They can help listen to what is said in case you miss something. And of course, it is always a good idea to see an Audiologist to have a hearing test on a regular basis. Happy Holidays! Submitted by: Curt Culford, M.Cl.Sc. Aud, Reg. GEORGIAN LIFE • DECEMBER 2019

ROCKIN’ FOR A CAUSE It was a great night of dancing to the rockin’ music of Mossy Rocks and Highway 26 at the Collingwood Legion on November 1st. Complete with cash bar, a silent auction, 50/50 draw, pizza, wings and snacks, this fundraiser to raise money for two amazing local organizations, Continued Adult Special Learning Experience (CASLE) and Home Horizon’s Barbara Weider House, was both a fun evening and a tremendous success! Thank you to Ted Pollock CPA CA for sponsoring the event and kudos to all the sponsors, donors, volunteers and, of course, the guests for their support. CHRISTMAS DAY FEAST IN COLLINGWOOD The sixth annual Christmas Day Feast takes place Wednesday, December 25th, 1 p.m. at the Collingwood Curling Club. Each year, community support for this event grows from local business owners, individual donors to over 100 volunteers. Chairperson, Marg Scheben-Edey said, “We are grateful for the continuing support of the community to make this event possible.” The planning committee, made up of 12 elves, has been hard at work since September planning logistics, fund raising, arranging rentals, food, entertainment and organizing volunteers. Community partners to date include: The Rotary Club of Collingwood, Collingwood Curling Club, Men with Knives Catering, Northwinds Brewhouse & Kitchen, Collingwood Horticultural Society, Giffen’s Country Market, Chef Simon Bailey, Tim Hortons, The Print Shop, B & B Catering, A’s Supply, GeorgianBay Signworks, Come to Our Table Community Cookbook, Sysco, Community Connection and Ace Cabs. Many more have provided financial support and resources to make this event memorable for all who attend! The event is FREE and ALL are welcome to the Community Feast! Whether new to town or far away from family, Christmas can be a lonely time, and for others, financial or emotional barriers may make it difficult to put together a Christmas dinner. Some people simply want to enjoy holiday cheer with others in the community. The event is non-denominational and open to all ages. Reservations are required as we are limited to 130 seats, and can be made by calling 211 (Community Connection). The main attraction, “the feast” will include a home-style meal with all the trimmings, seasonal entertainment, and a little something for the adults to take home. For more information, visit www.CollingwoodFeast.com or contact Shelby Worts - Marketing & Outreach info@shelbyworts.com

CANCER CHAT Home Auto Life Investments Group Business Farm Travel

The common view is that cancer is caused by accumulated damage to genes, but surprisingly the bacteria that grow on our bodies can also be a risk factor. This month, I want to tell you about a guest speaker we had visit the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Dr. Cynthia Sears, Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore. Dr. Sears is an expert in the areas of infectious diarrheal disease, food borne disease and intestinal infections. One focus of Dr. Sears’ research is to determine how a particular strain of bacteria, called enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (simply written ETBF) contributes to colon cancer.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths and is the fourth most common malignant neoplasm in both men and women. A rise in global incidence can be attributed to the far reaching impacts on dietary patterns, physical inactivity, and obesity. Recent work from Dr. Sears’ laboratory has connected oral antibiotic use to increased risk of CRC. Humans are colonized by many microorganisms including bacteria. Recent estimates suggest 3:1 non-human cells to human cells which reside on or within tissues including skin, oral mucosa, lung and gastrointestinal tract. It is well established that microorganisms comprising our microbiota influence our health and change over time with changes in our diet. Bacteroides fragilis represents 0.1-0.5% of the normal colonic flora. Although the majority of B.fragilis are non-toxigenic (referred to as NTBF), the ETBF strain are distinguished by secretion of a small toxin called BFT. It is unclear how the toxin BFT affects the colonic epithelial cells. Numerous studies have definitively shown that gut microbes exert distinct impacts on the DNA in epithelial cells lining the gut. Dr. Sears’ research has shown that in addition to DNA damage, BFT stimulates the WNT signaling pathway commonly perturbed in CRC to activate proto-oncogenes STAT3 and MYC that are well known to initiate tumorigenesis.

Not all products available in all provinces.

Dr. Sears’ research has shown that mice infected with ETBF developed diarrhea which resolved quickly, but within a week had inflammation and small tumors in the colon. One month post-infection, the colon of the mice were teeming with tumors. Mice infected with the non-toxin producing strain NTBF were free of diarrhea, inflammation and tumors. “This could be the H.pylori of colon cancer,” says Dr. Sears, referring to the bacteria implicated to cause stomach ulcers and suspected of causing stomach cancer. Dr. Sears’ work has demonstrated that ETBF dupes the immune system into permitting runaway colon tissue inflammation which is a precursor for malignant growth. ETBF induced tumor formation activates a unique type of immune response in which the immune cells begin producing an inflammatory molecule called IL-17. The IL-17 is antagonistic to antitumor immune responses induced by therapeutic immunotherapy drugs. Transiently increased levels of IL-17 trigger tumorigenesis. The toxin, BFT can be detected in up to 40% of patients with colorectal cancer. Furthermore, the toxin is detected at increased levels in the mucosa, the colon’s protective mucus layer. Most bacteria do not make it past the mucosa, but ETBF invades the mucus to form a sticky “biofilm” next to the colonic epithelial cells that line the colon, where colon cancer usually originates. Dr. Sears proposes, “These bacterial communities may eventually push the epithelial cells to become cancerous”. The researchers hypothesize that biofilms mark an early event in the biology of colonic epithelial cell transformation. They are testing this hypothesis in a prospective study involving 2000 individuals undergoing screening colonoscopy. Dr. Sears says, “Our long-term goal is to utilize the microbiota to identify those at risk for colon carcinogenesis”.

DRIVE SAFE THESE BUSINESSES CAN HELP

4 TIPS TO GET YOU THROUGH WINTER DRIVING SEASON We try as hard as we can to forget everything winter brings, but when the windchill and -20°C temperatures return, it’s important to be prepared and remember proper driving techniques as roads get slick with ice. Here are four tips to keep you safe on the road: Winter tires are the support you need. When the temperature drops below 7°C, the grip and function of your all-season tires diminish. Winter tires are essential because they are specially designed for freezing temperatures and the challenging weather conditions winter brings.

Make sure your car has enough fluids. With winter comes slush and unpredictable traffic conditions. As a driver, be prepared by ensuring your gas and windshield fluids are always topped up. Keep your gas tank at least half full for the duration of winter, because you never know when you’ll need to keep your engine running out in the cold. We also know that when the snow melts, gross grey slush can splash up and dirty our windshield, so it’s a great idea to keep a container (or two) of windshield washer fluid in your trunk at all times. Find calm while driving. Driving on icy roads, in blowing snow or through whiteout conditions can make drivers very tense. To help avoid even more dangerous situations, drivers should try to remain calm and remember key tips: • Keep a light grip on your steering wheel – a tight grip can give you hand cramps and make you even more tense • Reduce your speed to a safe and comfortable one to give you greater control – this will help prevent accidents • Maintain a good distance from the vehicle in front of you and keep your hands at 9 and 3 o’clock • Make sure your car is clear of snow before you set off and that your wipers are functioning correctly. Know what to do in a slide-y situation. One of the scariest situations parts of winter driving is when you hit an icy patch. It’s important not to panic or make any sudden manoeuvres. In an oversteer or fish-tail situation, keep your eyes focused on where you want your car to go – not where it’s taking you – and turn your wheel in that direction. If you do find yourself in a ditch or on the side of the road waiting for help, stay with your car (if it’s safe), stay warm, stay visible (put a bright cloth on the antenna and raise the hood), and run the engine and heater only 10 minutes every hour, keeping a downwind window open. IT’S TIME TO BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT IN 2020 Have you ever noticed in life: it’s the “little” things that make the biggest difference in our lives? For an example, a “little” dent caused by a careless grocery store shopper into the door of your used car in the parking lot may go unnoticed for days. However, that same amount of damage inflicted in your new car purchase and the day will never be quite the same. How about the “little” extra second someone leaves the four-way stop ahead of you, out of turn and your day may never quite be the same. As you go through life remember, the person that seems inconsiderate at a stop sign may have just received word of an ailing child or parent. The hospital is filled with seemingly healthy people yesterday and they are in ICU today. I was reminded recently of something I had shared with a friend during my wife’s illness. At the time, it seemed just a little advice which came to me almost instinctively. However, my friend shared that taking a “little” time to comfort them, when I was the one they wanted to comfort, made a significant impact on them. Something they shared they would never forget. So, my question: “how do we slow down long enough to understand and realize it’s the “little” extra things we do that have the greatest impact?” I believe we have to be intentional about slowing our day and our lives down keeping in mind what is truly important. This past weekend I enjoyed watching Granny (Marion) as she is known to us, interact with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. During their exchanges of conversation and interaction it became evident the little time shared was a most precious gift. She commented to me earlier today how special it was to spend a “little” time with everyone Sunday. Inviting someone to dinner and sharing your day can be a rewarding experience. Although we may take the little things in life for granted, we really should consider the impact the “little things” have on other’s lives. Taking time to send a hand written card by remembering a birthday may seem ordinary, but remembering the date when someone’s loved one passed away five years ago is “extraordinary”. Taking a little time to acknowledge this past event is a “little” extra that will make you a “little” different. I am sure we can all think of the “little” things that make the biggest changes in our lives. I am convinced, however, it’s the “little extra” in “extraordinary” that makes the most significant and lasting change in our lives. Take a “little” more time and stop and smell the roses and be a “little” less stressed! Be different! Submitted by: Brian A. CROCK POTS FEED A NEED Outreach programs are designed to connect with people in a community, be of benefit to them and support social needs. The Susan Wells Crock-Pot program, operated from Trinity United Church in Collingwood, is a successful, growing program which recently attracted the attention of District 17, Simcoe County branch of the Retired Teachers of Ontario (RTO/ERO). The Susan Wells Crock-Pot program is spearheaded by volunteer Barbara Sneyd, a member of the Trinity United Church congregation. She saw the need for the program, recognizing that some people do not have kitchens in which to cook. A crockpot, she decided, serves well for people who want to cook in smaller spaces. Through the Susan Wells Crock-Pot program, participants learn to cook small meals in a crock-pot. Participants receive a free crock-pot and Barbara Sneyd has produced a small cookbook which provides recipes for cooking with a crockpot. She runs the Susan Wells Crock-Pot program with the help of volunteers from Trinity United Church. A new series of crock-pot cooking classes will begin in January 2020.
