DECEMBER 2021
We shall never forget Due to the continued lifting of Covid restrictions, the Town of Collingwood and the Collingwood Legion hosted their annual Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph on November 11th. Many attended the ceremony to pay respect to veterans who fought and died for their country. Dedication of memorial wreaths, prayers of thanks to honour the fallen and bugle calls made the well-attended service a special one. Several veterans donned special Legion Remembrance Day blankets. A note for December T’is the season for gatherings; remember last year when most of us were forced to embrace the downtime for ourselves and spend time only with our close friends and family? Maybe you found the silver lining in smaller to-do lists and fewer parties and events to attend by getting outside, testing out new recipes, listening to new podcasts, shovelling your neighbour’s driveway, or even just binge-watching your favourite shows. Do your December plans look much different this year? I know mine do; we are focusing on family and friends and, of course, those neighbours who were in our bubble throughout the pandemic. Have you started your holiday shopping? Or are you already finished? The importance of shopping locally is even more crucial now as so many small businesses have experienced unprecedented setbacks for a year and a half now. “Buy” supporting small businesses, you can help them regain stable footing and have a great start to 2022. There is something to be said about being on a first-name basis with a local restaurateur or another small business owner, as such familiarity often translates into exemplary service. Every time you grab a coffee from a local café, purchase a piece of artwork from a neighbourhood artist or dine at a family-run restaurant, you are supporting local business owners and strengthening our communities.
Wishing you a joyous Christmas Season and a New Year filled with peace and happiness

Skicousi celebrates its 50th anniversary this 2022 season Looking back to 1971 Sheila Nasmith, Jane Underwood, and Diana Pegram were Montrealers who were all part of the mass exodus to Toronto during the 1960’s and 70’s era of Quebec political unrest. Settling into a new city, meeting new neighbours and friends, and exploring new surroundings, kept them, happily, very busy. When winter arrived; however, they were desperately missing their ski fun back in Quebec. Luckily by then, they had developed a new social circle of ski buddies in the Toronto area. This fledgling group of ski enthusiasts came up with an idea. And voila! Skicousi was launched in the winter of 1971. Carpools were organized to Horseshoe Valley and Medonte as both resorts ran a children’s nursery. Word spread and the group expanded. Originally Skicousi was a mid-week ladies’ getaway. As demographics and demand changed so did Skicousi. Membership has swelled to almost 400 with many more men joining in the fun. Season’s Greetings WISHING YOU A HAPPY HOLIDAY AND A HEALTHY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR
Looking ahead to 2022 Skicousi members are getting ready for some great outdoor experiences this season. Each of the private clubs where we ski, snowboard, and snowshoe are looking forward to welcoming us back in our 50th anniversary year. Currently, the ski clubs are finalizing their plans on how to open safely with Covid 19 protocols. With this physical and mental health crisis on everyone’s minds, this year could prove to be busier than ever for Skicousi and the winter sports industry in general. More people are working and learning from home and have flexible schedules for mid-week winter activities. For fifty years Skicousi has operated as a non-profit club and has been run by a group of dedicated volunteers. Every Thursday in January and February enthusiastic members participate in exclusive ski days at selected private clubs in the Georgian Triangle. Group and private lessons are available at a very low cost to our members. Our excellent Snow School is staffed with top-notch instructors, many of whom are Level 3 or 4 certified. Each lesson is an hour and a half long, with the same instructor each week.

A video tribute to local veterans In observance of Remembrance Day, The Stayner Heritage Society commissioned Tom and Mike Scholte to produce a 30-minute slide-show presentation featuring photos of areas service men and women, some still in service and some who have passed. The well-produced program had the veterans’ names super-imposed over their photos on a 6x8 foot screen. The audience, in chairs, set socially distanced, were thrilled to experience a unique way of honouring individual veterans.

Ted Yoannou: In Your Corner Become Who You Are “Live courageously. Live dangerously. Become who you are!” – Friedrich Nietzsche There once was a boy we’ll call Gus, born in Montreal to Greek immigrant parents who started a business and worked hard to support their children. The parents wanted Gus to get his education and then join the growing family enterprise. But Gus didn’t love it and instead had a passion for something else, something we’ll call oneiros. So naturally, his parents frowned upon oneiros, seeing it as a far-fetched, unrealistic and futureless option for their son. However, Gus was obsessed and could not be deterred. He studied, read and watched everything he could about oneiros. It forever whispered in his ear. It was extremely tough to get a job in oneiros. There were only two such companies in all of Canada. However, this didn’t stop Gus from trying. After he completed university, he volunteered to work for free in 2000 for the Montreal oneiros company in their mailroom, sorting letters. A few years later, he was offered a low-paying position with the oneiros company in Toronto. Over the next few years, Gus steadily rose in the company through that winning combination of hard work, talent, and good fortune. By 2006 he was second in command, and by 2010 he was fully in charge of running the Toronto operation, only below the Owner and the President.
Combining extensive research and analysis with unusual daring and innovative strategies, Gus lifted the Toronto oneiros company to dizzying, almost unprecedented heights, culminating in a magical year in 2015, much to the delight of all their customers. The Toronto company then hired a new President who was successful and experienced in oneiros, but didn’t have the same vision or style as Gus. He wanted to restructure the organization. They didn’t see eye to eye.
However, the Owner and President recognized Gus’s value. So they offered him an extremely lucrative five-year contract to stay on for more money than he’d ever earned before, ensuring financial security for the rest of his life. And, if he didn’t like the job after one year, he was free to leave. By this time, Gus was married and with young children. He had earned a good living the last few years but was far from “set for life.” Also, he had no other job offers. If you are a Canadian sports fan, you may have guessed by now that oneiros (Greek for “dream”) is baseball, the Toronto organization is the Blue Jays, and Gus is Alex Anthopoulos, the young General Manager who made remarkable trades and decisions in 2015 to lead the Blue Jays to an incredible season and playoffs for the first time since 1993. And, this was the dilemma Anthopolous faced at the end of that season: keep his job and be extremely well paid, even though his autonomy would be reduced and the President’s vision for the team did not align with his; or quit, become unemployed with no guarantee of a future position with any other team. I assume that his family, friends, lawyer and accountant all encouraged him to accept the rich offer from the Blue Jays. What fool wouldn’t have? Instead, Alex Anthopoulos said no and walked away. It didn’t align with his core beliefs and who he was. What a courageous and dangerous choice he made. He subsequently accepted a lesser assistant’s role with another team for the 2016 season. The following year a scandal took down the GM of the Atlanta Braves, and Anthopoulos was hired to replace him. Five years later, in the fall of 2021, Atlanta won the World Series. Anthopoulos had reached the very top of his profession and was the first Canadian GM ever to do so. He did it his way.

Handmade gifts, trinkets, and treats help make the holiday season special. Although cookies and other baked goods are some of the most popular homemade creations this time of year, gift-givers young and old can put their talents to use with various craft projects. Ornaments and decorations are one such idea. Here are some clever and not-too-time-consuming craft projects to try this holiday season. • Popcorn garland: Garland made of popcorn is a classic handmade holiday project. For a new twist, toss the popcorn with food colouring and allow it to dry before stringing for some bright colour on the tree.

• Photo ornaments: Print out several different photos that you love. Purchase round or square thin wood pieces from a craft store and attach the photos with Mod Podge®. When dry, drill a hole through the top and thread with twine. • Wooden snowflakes: Have children collect small twigs from outdoors, as well as holly leaves and some sprigs of evergreen. Arrange similarly sized twigs in the shape of snowflakes and glue them together, or tie with twine. Embellish with stickers, glitter, dried berries, and more. • Dough ornaments: Anyone can have fun molding their own ornaments, letting them dry, and then painting them. Use cookie cutters to get perfect holiday shapes. Craft stores sell various types of modeling clays and lightweight modelling materials. Or, make your own salt dough. • Reindeer bottle topper: Put to use any wine corks you have lying around. Attach googly eyes and a small fuzzy nose to the front of a cork. Insert twisted, brown pipe cleaners to make the antlers up top. Add ribbons, small snippets of faux fur, or any other extras you desire. • Sweet sentiments: Use old Scrabble® letter tiles to form a favourite holiday phrase, like “Joy to the World.” Glue the tiles together and hang from the tree on a piece of ribbon.

Gingerbread cookies and houses are one of the many symbols of the holiday season, alongside Christmas trees and twinkling lights. In fact, few confections symbolize the holidays more so than gingerbread. Even though gingerbread houses can be fun to make, there’s no denying it can be exacting work — especially for those who strive for perfection. Prepackaged kits attempt to take some of the guesswork out of the equation, but those who are crafting from scratch can employ these tips as they build their gingerbread houses. • Go for form and not flavour. Few gingerbread houses ever get eaten, so focus on finding a dough that will bake up rock hard as opposed to one that tastes good. • Get the right icing texture. Pastry artist Catherine Beddall says royal icing is the preferred “glue” to adhere gingerbread pieces. Beddall says icing should be thick like peanut butter and not runny.
FREE ESTIMATES | QUALITY WORK GUARANTEED
FOREIGN & DOMESTIC | REFINISHING CARS & TRUCK | INSURANCE WORK
• Mind the dough. Do not roll out the gingerbread dough too thin or it may become brittle after being cooked. Always cut out shapes before the gingerbread is baked. Let the baked pieces sit overnight to cool completely before using them to build.

• Patience is key. Allow the icing to dry for at least a couple of hours after adhering each piece and before moving and handling the house, says Beddall. Work in stages so that individual items can be decorated and allowed to dry. Then the walls can be put together, followed by the roof pieces. • Utilize a template. Free-handing may not be easy. Cut out templates using cardboard or posterboard for various gingerbread pieces. One of the most important tips is to have fun. Don’t take gingerbread house making too seriously as a novice. Rather, enjoy the experience and the centuries-old tradition.

THESE ADVERTISERS HAVE ALL DONATED TO A LOCAL TOY DRIVE TOY BUYING TIPS WHEN SHOPPING FOR KIDS Shopping for gifts for kids makes many shoppers nostalgic for their own childhoods. Few adults can forget the joy of finding the perfect gift under the tree on Christmas morning. Recreating that magic for a youngster can be as joyous for gift-givers as it is for kids. That’s especially so when shoppers make it a point to give safe, ageappropriate gifts.

Whether shopping for their children or their grandkids, nieces or nephews, shoppers can keep these tips in mind to ensure they give toys that are as safe as they are fun. Speak to Mom and Dad first. When buying for a grandchild, niece or nephew, shoppers should first ask Mom or Dad for suggestions. Parents will know which types of toys their children like, and they’ll also know the child’s level of maturity. Some kids may not be mature enough to play with otherwise age-appropriate toys, while others may be mature beyond their years and enjoy more complex toys than their age would suggest. Parents know what makes a good toy and what doesn’t. Learn what to look for on labels. Toy labels are excellent sources of information, but shoppers must know what to look for. Toy labels include information about age-appropriateness (i.e., “Ages 3 & Up”) as well as directions regarding how to use the toy. If the instructions seem a bit complex for the child the item will be for, look for something else. Children’s toy labels also include additional information such as they meet the latest safety standards. More information about toy label requirements can be found at www.toyassociation.org.
Happy
Avoid certain features. Toys that are loud, shoot objects into the air or contain small pieces pose a threat to children. Especially noisy toys can damage children’s hearing, while projectiles can increase the risk of eye injuries or choking. Toys with small pieces also pose a choking hazard to young children who may try to put the pieces into their mouths.
Holidays
Err on the side of caution. Even after reading its label, if you are uncertain about the safety of a given toy, err on the side of caution and only give toys they’re confident won’t pose a safety risk. Even toys that may seem safe could be dangerous to kids who might otherwise seem old enough. For example, hobby kits and chemistry sets may contain dangerous chemicals that even pre-adolescents are not old enough to handle safely.

Healthy changes top the list of New Year’s Resolutions each year Specific resolutions can significantly improve overall health. For example, many people are eager to lose weight, improve their physical fitness levels or even stop habits that hinder their mental or physical wellness. As the new year ticks closer, individuals can explore these popular resolutions as they get on the path to better health.
exercise doesn’t require drastic changes. Small steps can add up to big results. Address stress It’s easy to underestimate the effects of stress on the mind and body. Left unchecked, stress can contribute to heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. However, resolving to reduce stress by adopting certain techniques can improve self-esteem and mood.
Commit to quit Smoking not only causes cancer, it also damages nearly every part the body including the bones, reproductive organs, mouth, skin, eyes, and blood vessels. Quitting can help reverse the effects of years of smoking. Of course, the best option is to quit nicotine and tobacco use altogether, but smokers who choose not to quit should also be aware that alternatives exist.
Improve your diet Eating more meals made at home and incorporating more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean protein into your meals can improve overall health.
Limit alcohol intake The phrase “everything in moderation” applies to alcohol consumption. Excessive consumption of alcohol can lead to liver and kidney damage. When these organs are not functioning properly, they cannot filter toxins out of the body, resulting in potentially irreparable damage. Resolve to cut down on alcohol consumption if you are drinking more than two drinks per day.
Visit the doctor Too often, people put off going to the doctor until something is wrong with their health. It is much better to be proactive and avoid illness through testing and conversations with a physician. Doctors may be able to recognize symptoms and risk factors that could be indicative of future illness. Routine physical exams also will check cholesterol and glucose levels, monitor blood pressure and include other preventive care options.
Exercise more readily Exercise can improve mood and sleep, help people control their weight, reduce the risk of heart disease, improve bone and muscle strength, and potentially extend their lives. Resolving to

This holiday season, help families like Naomi’s Build the Beyond Gathering with loved ones to cook cherished family recipes, making decorations, and hanging them on the tree; traditions are at the heart of the holidays, and they often have one thing in common: they’re rooted in the warmth and security of home. But, for the 1.7 million families experiencing housing insecurity in Canada, home doesn’t feel like a place to make happy memories. Instead, it’s a source of stress and strain. Every family deserves a place to gather in comfort and peace — a place to nurture their own holiday traditions. This holiday season, we can give families like Naomi’s that all-important gift. Naomi had the courage to leave a difficult relationship with her two young children. They found temporary refuge at her parents’ small apartment, but there was no space, no privacy, and nowhere for the kids to play. Naomi was intent on building a better future for her family, starting with a home of their own. But, with skyrocketing housing costs and difficulty accessing housing subsidies, “everything was out of reach.” With support from the community, all that changed. Naomi had the opportunity to partner with Habitat for Humanity Canada to achieve her dream of a safe, stable home with a mortgage geared to her income. To Naomi, it was the best gift she could have ever imagined. “I wish you could have seen my kids’ faces the day we got our keys,” she says. “Habitat has given me hope for a future. I am happier than I have ever been.”
Naom i’s fam traditio ily n: Baking salt dou g orname h nts
Across South Georgian Bay, more families than ever are in need of that precious opportunity as we seek to recover and build back from the pandemic. Which is why I’m asking you for your support this season. Please join our tradition of bringing families like Naomi’s home for the holidays.
Our tradition is building home. Become a part of our tradition by donating today!
Your holiday gift will empower families in South Georgian Bay to realize their dream of an affordable home of their own. When you give this special opportunity to a family, it means so much more than just a home. You’ll help families break free from the obstacles that are holding them back. “You know that no matter what happens, things are getting better. You’re moving up. You’re not stuck in this stagnant place.” Naomi says. You’ll open the door to a happier, healthier, more financially stable future. “I’ve started saving money. The kids are doing well in school. I have a strong social network.” Naomi says. “This is where we are going to plant our roots. This is our safe place. This is our community.” Naomi’s story is just one example of how your support builds the beyond for families. It’s an investment in their futures, one with generational and lasting impact. Your ongoing generosity opens new doors for families like Naomi’s, changing their lives forever. This holiday season, will you please join us here at Habitat Georgian Bay to give families like Naomi’s the gift of home? With my heartfelt thanks, and best wishes for the holiday season.

Tax Loss Selling If you have realized capital gains during 2021, you might want to consider selling securities in a loss position, to help offset the gains. A capital gain refers to the profit that results from the sale of a capital asset, such as a stock, bond or real estate (other than your primary residence,) where the sale price exceeds the purchase price. A capital loss must first be applied against any capital gains you realize in the current year. Once the capital gains for the current year have been offset, the balance of the loss can be either carried back three years (against gains realized in 2018, 2019 or 2020) or carried forward indefinitely. Investments that are in a loss position and no longer meet your investment objectives might be a good idea to sell for the purpose of triggering the tax loss. Assuming a standard two-day settlement, transactions must be initiated by December 29, 2021 to be used for the 2021 tax year. Charitable Donations You may hold securities within your portfolio with significant gains. As an alternative to cash donations, you can also donate publicly listed securities in-kind to registered charities without having to pay tax on the realized capital gain. This is a wonderful opportunity to support a qualified charity, while reducing your total taxes payable. Not only do you avoid paying tax on the capital gain, but you also receive a donation tax receipt for the full fair market value of the security at the time of the donation. If you plan on donating securities in-kind this holiday season, ensure you start this process early. The final day to make contributions to a registered charity in order to claim the donation tax receipt on your 2021 income tax return is December 31, 2021. Keep in mind, these type of transactions can take up to a week to process.

OUR FOCUS ON QUALITY How do you measure an outstanding quality job when you are trying to repair a customer’s vehicle? Having been a licenced technician for 34 years, I can tell you the answer is more complicated than you might think. If the job is pretty straightforward, like new brakes, the answer is simple. Use the best parts, with the best warranty the customer is willing to pay for, but don’t oversell anything. In my experience, if you are honest on the benefits of using quality parts and take their driving patterns into account, it builds trust and ensures a quality outcome. For most vehicles, we have a range of parts from economy, OEM, to premium, and we leave it up to the customer to make that choice (with a little informative input from us) In addition to using the right parts, you need to be meticulous in how you install them. We don’t always work on shiny new vehicles, so you have to be extra careful not to disturb anything else when you are doing the repair. As a side note, my boss has a policy that if we accidentally break something, he covers the cost of that repair. You want the customer to leave the shop with the job done right. If the job is not straightforward, like electrical issues or intermittent problems that may come and go, it’s important to take the customer along the diagnostic path with you. Like going to the doctor, sometimes you need to do some testing and prodding around, and it’s best to keep the customer in the loop as you progress. We have up-to-date testing and diagnostic equipment so we can handle the tough stuff, but it sometimes takes a few steps to get there. The vehicle owner needs to understand the logic of the actions to feel they are getting good quality service for their money. The other critical part of providing top quality is how the customer is treated at the front counter when they first arrive, right through to getting their keys back and leaving with a perfect repair job. We pride ourselves on carefully listening to what customers have to say and pass along every bit of information to the technician, even the seemingly insignificant bits. At times customers are brought out to see the techs in the shop and have a look at what we are doing (we are all pretty friendly!) Some customers think you will take advantage of the situation, especially if they are not experts on the mechanical aspects of their car, so the quality of the interaction between the front desk, the technician and the client is critical to the quality of the whole job. Then there is the famous inspection checklist. While we have the vehicle on the hoist is behooves us to have a quick look around to see if any issues are urgent (safety) or may cause a problem down the road (literally). We have a moral and legal obligation to do this, and once more, the way this is communicated at the front desk becomes critical. Again, it may mean the client comes out to see for themselves, so they don’t think we are trying to sell them something they don’t need. In my experience, some customers appreciate this info, and some get angry. We are trying to give them a good quality job, not drum up business. I have a funny story about just such a thing. A regular customer was in for a repair, and I noticed one of his brake lights was not working. I had a bulb in my toolbox and was in the process of fixing it for him, free of charge, but because we hadn’t relayed that info at the front counter and he saw me working on it, he got angry and told me just put it back the way it was! Later that evening, he was pulled over and ticketed for a burned-out brake light. The next day he came in with coffee, doughnuts and an apology. Even though I was trying to go the extra mile with a free repair without the communication, it can all go south. Quality begins when the customer walks in the front door, gets informed and involved in the repair process as much as they want to be. Using quality parts installed perfectly and giving them a snapshot of how their car or truck is doing are part of providing a top-notch quality experience and building a trusting relationship with their mechanic.

Bizlink: Business Succession and the New Generation of Employees Business succession has traditionally involved passing a business over to the next generation and keeping the business within the family. There are websites, consultants, estate planners and mentoring groups ready and prepared to help business owners engage family members in taking over the business. However, according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses, baby boomer business owners planning to retire do not have intentions of handing over their businesses to their families. This means that alternative models to business succession need to be considered.
Selling Your Business to An Employee Selling to a trusted and knowledgeable employee is becoming an attractive option for business succession. There are many advantages. Firstly, it enables business continuity as an existing employee is more likely to maintain the company culture and operate the business in a similar manner. The transition to an employee can sometimes mean less hassle as the employee does not need to be sold on the merits and virtues of the business or require a lengthy sales pitch. Finally, a sale to an employee is often smoother and faster during and after the transition process as existing customers, vendors and staff have familiarity with the individual and vice-versa. However, support is still required throughout the process and employee buyers typically require additional financing to purchase the business.
an ownership stake often go the extra mile to ensure the success of the business, satisfy their customers and contribute to the bottom line. Both succession models could be explored as part of building a succession plan depending on the structure and type of the business, and if there is interest and engagement from one or more employees. Regardless of the model chosen, success requires careful planning and preparation as well as advice from experts including accountants and lawyers.
About BizLink: BizLink is a program that seeks to match business owners looking to transition their business to new ownership. BizLink provides access to tools, resources, and a network to assist individuals throughout their succession plan, business purchase and ownership transition. Community Futures South Georgian Bay provides complimentary advice and coaching through all stages of the transition process, including financial support for new owners. Don’t wait, start your business transition process now by contacting Community Futures South Georgian Bay!
Selling to Multiple Employees Another option for consideration is to transition to employee ownership, otherwise known as an Employee Share Ownership Plan (ESOP). Rather than selling the business to a single employee, an ESOP facilitates the transfer of ownership to all qualified employees. Businesses that depend on the knowledge and skillsets of their employees are ideal for this type of ownership structure. Employee ownership can create a close-knit group of employees who are experienced, vested and have the knowledge and expertise to continue the business without the original owners. There are many benefits. In addition to decreasing turnover, employees who have

Obituary: Rob Potter
Town of The Blue Mountains Deputy Mayor
The Town of The Blue Mountains announced that Deputy Mayor Rob Potter passed away peacefully on November 14th, 2021 with his wife Linda and his family by his side. “On behalf of Council, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to Linda and the entire Potter family,” said Mayor Alar Soever. “Rob was a valued member of Council and a true community leader. His presence will be missed throughout the community by friends, family and residents.” Deputy Mayor Potter served as Councillor for the Town of The Blue Mountains from June 2018, until he was appointed as Deputy Mayor for the Town on January 30, 2020. His selfless dedication to the community was such that he remained active in his role as Deputy Mayor until late last week. In his professional career, Deputy Mayor Potter was editor of the local Courier-Herald and the Review-Herald newspapers for a period of 28 years. He also worked with the Town of The Blue Mountains as the Communications and Economic Development Coordinator from 2009 – 2010. Community volunteer service was an integral part of his life, and the community would be a far lesser place if it were not for his contributions as the founding president of the Marsh Street Centre and a member of the steering committee that brought the Craigleith Heritage Depot to fruition. His volunteer work also extended to several Town committees, including the Community Assist for an Urban Study Effort (“CAUSE”) program committee, the Sustainable Path Committee and the Attainable Housing Committee in its early years. He was also involved with the Thornbury Community Theatre Group, Relay for Life and many other local community organizations. Source: The Town Of Blue Mountains
E3 benefits from 100 Women Who Care E3 Community Services was the selected recipient for the fall meeting of 100 Women Who Care South Georgian Triangle, which brings together women to make real and lasting impacts in our local communities. The group’s current membership is approximately 180 women from across the South Georgian Triangle area. They meet four times a year, and each contributes $100 to a local charity that the members select. E3 has already received almost $20,000 from this generous group of women. This generous donation will go a long way in supporting E3’s new volunteer program. This integrated volunteer program will enhance inclusive community engagement and belonging, centering the needs of people supported at E3. In addition, it will expand many areas of the organization to allow people to pursue their individual, self-directed interests including painting, gardening, and cooking. An integrated volunteer program means that volunteers consist of people supported, families, community members, and learning placements. A full-time Volunteer Manager and Community Liaison will manage the program to ensure that everyone is connected in the process of experiential learning for growth that responds to everyone’s diverse needs and interests.
E3 Community Services offers support to adults with developmental disabilities, youth, and children in the South Georgian Bay area. Please visit www.e3.ca. In Italy, there are many traditional pasta dishes served during the holidays, especially on Christmas Eve. Italy has a long tradition of serving sweetened pasta, and many of the holiday dishes have a hint of sweetness. Back in the Renaissance, pasta was a luxury food, reserved for special occasions, and paired with other luxury foods like sugar and cinnamon. Traditions such as the giving of Panettone, a sweet, often fruit laden Italian cake, reflect this affinity. This holiday season, Saucy pasta will be creating some sweet pasta treats, to make your holiday spectacular. A few offerings will be Organic Cocoa infused pasta, Organic Peppermint Pasta, Cinnamon Spice Pasta, Ice Wine Pasta, and Seasonal Ravioli in Candy Cane, Snowman, and Christmas Tree shapes.

A fresh approach to old Buy, Sell, and Trade stores! Hock Stars is owned by a family man that holds family, service, and compassion as important factors in this business! We are a Buy, Sell and Trade business with a retail storefront. We buy what you sell, We sell what we buy, We trade, and are always up for a good barter.
We can help you out if in a tight spot. We are not all in a situation where we can just reach for the credit card or run into the bank for a small loan of less than $500 and most times, when these circumstances hit, we do not have time! This is where we help. By using items that you own, bring them to our store and sell them to us on a buyback. You receive cash on the spot, then 30 days later, you BUYBACK your items from us for the original amount we paid you and a buyback fee. Not quite caught back up, pay us the buyback fee only and we will hold your item safe and secure for another 30 days for you. **Note: All items are accessed by condition, workability, and current-day value.
We sell many different types of products from the previously loved (aka used) to the new in the original box sealed items! We have Gold and Silver bullion, Paper money, Jewellery from titanium, to silver and gold. Watches, musical instruments, Video game Consoles from the old vintage to the latest system, and a large array of games to complement. Blu-rays, DVDs, CDs, and the electronics that you may require to listen or watch them on. Unique Collectibles as well as Pokemon, Magic the gathering, and Yu-gi-oh trading cards. *Note: Items are not always on hand due to high turnover so we have a waiting list to put your name on and we call you when the item of your desire hits our retail storefront. Moms, Dads, Aunts, Uncles, and Grandparents: That video game that “Billy” wants for $80 may be in stock at Hock Stars for much less. Need a musical instrument for “Sarah”? At times, it is cheaper to buy from our store than the cost of renting for a school year. Does “Aaron” have dreams of becoming a rock star? Many kids have dreams that have cost a parent a pretty penny, you can help them start and realize a dream by buying that guitar here. Aaron has now moved on to computers. Trade in the guitar towards a computer! We believe we have something for all ages!
This year, we are putting up an angel tree for Christmas. An angel tree is where a child’s age and gender are put on a paper angel and hung on our Christmas tree. Then, the angels go to work with donated gifts from both the community and us, to make sure there is a gift for the child. We will use monies raised to shop at local community small businesses.

Direct To Consumer Hearing Devices Hearing aids, which are customized medical devices prescribed and fitted by an Audiologist or hearing instrument specialist, have been available for many years. However, in recent years there have been new products entering the hearing healthcare landscape. Two such products are over-the-counter (OTC) hearing devices and personal sound amplification products (PSAPs). Both conventional hearing aids and OTCs/PSAPs amplify sound for the wearer, but their intended uses are different. Over-the-counter devices (OTCs) and PSAPs are ‘direct to consumer,’ meaning they do not require a visit to an Audiologist. They can be purchased without a prescription or hearing test. Personal sound amplification products (PSAPs) are designed to be used by individuals without hearing loss who may require better hearing in certain environments, such as birdwatching, hunting, etc. Over-the-counter devices (OTCs) are primarily aimed at individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss. Hearing aids are regulated medical devices that are prescribed by a professional. Personal sound amplification products (PSAPs) are regulated as consumer electronics and not as medical devices. Researchers at Western University conducted a study of popular PSAPs and OTC devices. When comparing low and mid-price range PSAPs to the performance of basic and premier hearing aids, they found that PSAPs generated greater internal noise and higher distortion levels for some conditions compared to hearing aids. Furthermore, the maximum power output of some PSAPs was found to far exceed the safe limits of amplification (upwards of 130dB!). Some PSAPs were advertised as having a separate ‘noisereduction’ program; however, the magnitude of noise reduction in these programs was found to be negligible. The researchers did find a measurable difference (i.e. benefit) when testing hearing aids with noise-reduction programs.

It is important for people to know the difference between hearing aids and OTC and PSAP devices. These devices vary greatly in performance, intended use, regulating requirements, and cost. As we move toward the closing of 2021, we look into 2022 with renewed optimism. Trusting and hoping that the challenges presented and met in the past few months have given all of us the resilience to move forward to build a better tomorrow. Being a Realtor® is a great opportunity to combine my knowledge of the area, my sales and marketing background, a genuine interest in people, and a love of real estate. I do not think of buying and selling homes as transactions; I think of them as opportunities to develop a relationship. I thrive in the spontaneity of real estate and find it exciting that you never know what the next call on your phone might be. I am committed to listening to my clients and learn what drives them, what excites them, and what is motivating their next home purchase or sale.
Cheryl and Deb chose to be part of the Chestnut Park team due to their excellent customer service reputation and commitment to prioritizing trust, integrity, knowledge, and discretion. If you are considering a real estate transaction, you no doubt have many questions. If you are looking to work with a competent, resourceful, full-time REALTOR® who can listen to your needs, Cheryl and Deb would appreciate the opportunity to be your first step in achieving a successful outcome.

Kenny The Hitman Kenny Caughlin (also known as "Kenny The Hitman") started his career at just nine years old as an actor, model, and voiceover actor in Toronto. At age thirteen he called Mark Daily - who at that time was a newsman at 1050 Chum before going to City TV - and told him that he wanted to be a DJ on 1050 Chum (at the time the biggest Top 40 radio station in Canada). Mark Daily was so impressed that Kenny knew what he wanted to do at just thirteen - so he invited Kenny to come to hang out at the radio station after school. Kenny spent every day at Chum learning from legendary radio personalities like Mark Daily, John Majhor, Bob Magee, and others. Once Kenny graduated from high school, Chum sent him to St. Johns Newfoundland to host the evening show on Q93 to get some muchneeded experience on-air as a disk jockey. After a year in Newfoundland, Kenny returned to Ontario to work at several radio stations - CHSC in St. Catharines and Q107 in Toronto. Then off to Halifax to host the afternoon drive show on Q104. After four years in Halifax, Kenny worked for numerous radio stations in Toronto - 680 CFTR, AM 640, The Hog, Kiss FM, Mix 99.9, Z103.5, Country 95.3 and Q107 again. In 2010, Kenny decided to leave radio to be a full-time voice actor. He has since voiced thousands of radio and TV commercials around the world. Kenny made millions doing voiceovers and then decided to fulfill his lifelong dream of working in the Caribbean. While on vacation in the Turks & Caicos Islands he put his Sony walkman on to listen to the local island radio station. To Kenny's surprise - the record skipped for hours so Kenny decided to drop by the local station to see why the record was skipping for hours on end. A local gentleman was sitting outside the radio station and Kenny asked him "do you realize your record has been skipping for hours" and he replied with "ya mon - I was at a BBQ and it took me a while to get back." Kenny spent the next twelve months emailing the owner of the station saying "you've got the worst radio station I've ever heard - I've been in radio my whole life - let me take it over and make it a profitable venture for you". After a year of emailing the owner, one day when he finally replied and said "I agree with everything you've said - let's do this." Kenny then launched four radio stations on the island of Providenciales: Power 92.5 FM, 102.5 Kiss FM, 93.9 Island FM and 90.5 Praise Him FM. Island FM was later sold to a local broadcaster and 90.5 Praise Him FM was put on hold so Kenny could focus on just two stations instead of four. Power 92.5 quickly became the most popular station on the island and has been number one for over 30 years. Kenny still operates the Caribbean radio stations via the internet from his home recording studio in Collingwood and makes frequent trips to the island. He is also still one of Canada's top voiceover actors. In September 2021, Kenny became one of the morning show hosts on "Kenny and Jenna in the morning" at his favourite local radio station 97-7 Max FM. "I've always dreamed of doing the morning show in Collingwood where I've lived for the last twenty years. Kenny was the first broadcaster to run a foreign radio station from Canada and is the only radio DJ on the air every morning in two different countries.

DRIVE INTO
WINTER
THESE LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN HELP YOU WITH YOUR DRIVING NEEDS
WRAP IT UP FOR THE
HOLIDAY SEASON THE ALL NEW 2022 DODGE RAM 1500 LIMITED
Gifts for auto enthusiasts The roar of the engine and the feeling of the wind in your hair is part of the magic of taking to the open road behind the wheel of a beloved vehicle. Whether a person is the ultimate gear head who needs to have the latest aftermarket accessory or someone who simply appreciates a pristine ride, auto enthusiasts come in all shapes and sizes. Luckily, there are all types of automotive gifts that can make it easy to impress car guys and gals this holiday season. Dashboard cell phone holder – Using a mobile phone while driving is not a good idea. However, many people use their phones as GPS devices. Holding a phone while navigating is dangerous, but a phone mount near the dash can keep the phone visible without compromising the safety of drivers and their passengers. Customized floor mats – Know an auto fanatic who’s also a sports fan? Offer a gift that mixes the two passions, such as floor mats featuring a favorite sports team’s logo. Cleansing wipes – When drivers are short on time, a full car wash and wax may not be possible.
705-445-2740 | bluemountainchrysler.com 9950 Hwy 26 E, Collingwood, ON
Magazine subscription – A wide selection of publications are geared towards auto enthusiasts. They provide plenty of pertinent information, and some car lovers like to collect and display certain issues. Yearly subscriptions are affordable and can make ideal stocking stuffers.
Follow our journey:
Racing experience gift certificate – Research racing car schools and experiences locally or if you are planning a trip. Chances are you can find an opportunity for an automotive enthusiast to get behind the wheel of a race car with professional drivers offering tips for navigating the course at high speeds. Car cleaning kit – Taking care of a ride means making sure it is clean inside and out. A quality car cleaning kit can ensure the job is done effectively, and the car or truck always looks its best. Personalized leather keychain – Ensure that a person can drive and keep their keys handy in style with leather keychains engraved with a driver’s name or initials.
THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
Racing video games – A love for the open road may not end when cars pull into the driveway. Modern racing games and consoles produce incredibly realistic graphics and action that mimics real life. Roof or car racks – When a love of driving merges with the call of the great outdoors, drivers may need something to help haul their stuff. Various racks have been designed for toting around bicycles, kayaks, luggage, and more. Gift certificates for expert services – A perfectly practical gift would be a gift certificate for parts, maintenance, interior/exterior detailing, or window tinting for their vehicle. When gifting automotive enthusiasts, look no further than their favourite hobby for inspiration.

Signs of unsafe driving in older drivers A license to drive has long been symbolic of independence. Teenage drivers long for the day they earn their licenses and can take to the road without mom or dad riding shotgun, while aging drivers want to keep driving as long as possible so they can come and go as they please in their golden years.

There’s no formula drivers and their families can employ to determine when it’s time to take the car keys away from senior citizens. Thankfully, fatal collisions involving older drivers have declined in recent decades. A host of factors have no doubt contributed to that decline, including lane-assist technology and forward collision warning systems that have become standard offerings on many modern vehicles.

As much as technology has helped make driving safer for everyone, aging drivers should still keep an eye out for certain signs that may indicate their skills behind the wheel are diminishing and potentially compromising their ability to drive safely. The following are warning signs of unsafe driving: Delayed response to unexpected situations – Frequent close calls and narrowly avoiding collisions when other drivers stop suddenly indicate reduced response time that can put aging drivers at an elevated risk of being involved in an accident. Becoming easily distracted while driving – Distracted driving has become a significant concern in recent decades, but it’s often associated with young drivers. However, aging drivers who are easily distracted also pose a safety risk to themselves and other motorists.
TAKE IT SLOW Reduce Speed•Travel Safe•Be Prepared
Decrease in confidence while driving – Only drivers will know if they feel confident enough to drive safely, and aging drivers must be honest with themselves when assessing how they feel when driving.
707 River Rd W. Unit 11, Wasaga Beach 705-984-4527 info@gtautoglassandtintinc.com
Having difficulty moving into or maintaining the correct lane of traffic – Lane-assist technology can help drivers recognize how often they’re staying in the correct lane of traffic. When the warning bell goes off frequently, it might be time for older drivers to reconsider if it’s safe for them to be behind the wheel.
www.gtautoglassandtintinc.com
WE ARE OPEN BY APPOINTMENT ONLY
Hitting curbs when making right turns or backing up – Hitting curbs when turning or backing up indicates drivers may be having difficulty controlling their vehicles and/or seeing the road, both of which indicate it’s no longer safe for drivers to get behind the wheel. Getting scrapes or dents on car, garage or mailbox – These signs also indicate drivers are having trouble controlling their vehicles. Driving too fast or too slow for road conditions – This indicates drivers are not as alert to their surroundings as they need to be to stay safe on the road. It’s not easy for aging drivers to relinquish their drivers’ licenses. Learning to recognize potential warning signs of unsafe driving can help aging drivers make the safest decisions for themselves, their passengers, and their fellow motorists.

BUSINESS PROFILE:
In 1999, The Creemore Coffee Company Inc. was started by Karen and David Nesbitt of Creemore, operating from an old church on Highway 124 in Melancthon as primarily a wholesale supplier to café's & retailers. After a fulfilling career in fundraising, sales, marketing, as well as raising a family and operating a dog walking business, Louise Priest and her husband/partner Trevor purchased the company from the Nesbitt's in 2019. The home of Creemore Coffee is now in the renovated community center beside the post office in New Lowell, boasting over 40 varieties of coffee, 15 hot chocolate flavours, and many teas to choose from.
Trevor’s true passion has always been to spoil people with delicious food, making the purchase of The Creemore Coffee Company an attractive one. Coffee roasting is considered a culinary art, and Trevor’s coffee is outstanding. “We roast smooth, full-bodied coffees that are rich in flavour. We use high-quality, ethically sourced beans from around the world and lovingly roast them in small batches. The result is carefully crafted, beautiful coffee we’re proud to sell and to serve.”
The smell of our coffee roastery is out of this world, making our shop a very social and great place for our three part-time employees. We pay a living wage and fully support work/life balance with shorter workweeks. We are very excited to grow our little coffee roastery with our staff, and we are very grateful for everyone who has taken the time to stop at our store and enjoy our products. What sets us apart is our approach to coffee and food. We handcraft in small batches and price everything fairly. The response is magnificent. Due to the pandemic, the focus has been curbside pick-up, online ordering and lots of shipping... until now. Wanting to be of value to the community and offer more than just freshly roasted coffees, they partnered with many of their favourite bakers from Toronto to bring their wonderful creations to Clearview. Now offering a variety of frozen baked goods including Gryfe's Bagels (par baked), Fahmee Jamaican Patties, Parviz African Hand Pies and Pie Wood Fired Pizza's (bake or BBQ from frozen) and Blueberry Buns. It's easy to find that perfect treat that will put a smile on your face or give as a gift. Creemore Coffee Company considers the environment in all business decisions, including the roasting of the coffee, the packaging of products and their partnership with Bullfrog Power. The roastery location was specifically chosen in a small rural community - allowing the ability to roast the beans without using an energy-intensive afterburner typically used in city production facilities. In addition, 95% of the products are Certified Fair Trade, organic and supports bird migration. which means better trading conditions and securing the rights of marginalized producers and workers in developing countries. Creemore Coffee Company is a proud supporter of The Cafe Femenino coffee program; a one-of-a-kind ethical sourcing model committed to ending the cycle of poverty afflicting women coffee farmers worldwide.
32
Currently, they are having fun giving away coffee as samples to anyone interested to try it, encouraging patrons to bring their own cup. The goal is to open the Roastery Store & Bakery later this year, which will allow them to serve coffee and make available freshly baked items. Stay tuned for more information once they finalize dates.

For the love of theatre Before the end of the year, Theatre Collingwood always likes to get together with the local businesses that support them through their Sponsorship Program to thank them for their continued support. When in-person gatherings started to take place again, they were thrilled to host a pizza party at their long-time DINE & PLAY partner, Boston Pizza in Collingwood. The event was originally planned for what turned out to be a frigid and wet Monday that week, but the 'rain date' on Wednesday, October 27th was a beautiful autumn day to connect with everyone on the outdoor patio. For nearly forty years, Theatre Collingwood has been the champion for live theatre in South Georgian Bay. Their mission is to bring outstanding live performances to the region, to support our youth through drama education, and to strengthen arts & culture in our community by creating unique experiences. HHART: Actively improving the lives of others A team of HHART veterans deployed to the Dominican Republic in October 2021 with four goals in mind: to survey the actual COVID situation in the villages HHART serves and at the Sosua By The Sea resort where the team stays, to begin the implementation phase of a large project. HHART stands for Hispaniola Humanitarian Assistance and Relief Team. HHART missions are supported, organized and led by Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach, Rotary District 7010 (central Canada). The Team's primary mission is to improve the lives of poor and disadvantaged people (primarily of Haitian heritage) living near Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic by providing much needed medical, dental and other forms of humanitarian assistance.

The COVID-19 situation is pretty well the same or maybe even a little “tighter” than in Canada. Vaccination rates are extremely high (even in the Bateyes). One must be double vaccinated to enter commercial establishments (even the grocery stores and banks), and people wear masks and social distance when appropriate. The resort staff were extremely disciplined at wearing their masks and highly proficient in preparing/handling food and beverages according to public health rules. The team transported a digital x-ray machine and medical equipment and supplies to the Dominican Republic from Canada. These items were delivered to Amigitos’ community centre in Pancho Mateo, the site of the Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach’s international service project to equip a medical office, dental clinic, and community services office. As part of that project’s implementation phase, the group also received the dental chair, got briefed on the chair’s capabilities, and settled on the layout for the dental operatory and the adjacent sterilization and supply room.

Several locations were inspected to identify future HHART projects. It is clear that water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects in schools and medical facilities and initiatives to mitigate fire and shock hazards in vulnerable structures would be worthy enterprises for future HHART missions. Without the commitment and expertise of HHART veterans Grace, Sandra, Dr. Jen, Dr. Don, Terrisita, Dr. Rofelixsa, Sandi P, and Jefe Steve it would not have been possible to establish that HHART missions in January and February 2022 are necessary and doable. A WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR The holidays are a wonderful time of year that can also be tough for many people. But, experts say there are a few simple things you can do to help manage the stress of the season and maybe even help you enjoy the festivities. Get outside and get moving. Take a stroll on the trails that wind their way through the greenspace, ponds and landscaping that are part of the Stonebridge Town Centre. Visit the Gazebo on the edge of Serenity Pond as part of your routine. Take time to enjoy the nature and wildlife that are part of the picturesque surroundings. Allow yourself time to enjoy a meal with friends. Boston Pizza, Bamboo Terrace, Harvey’s, Sunset Grill, Wild Wing and Tim Hortons all provide safe spaces to spend with friends and family. Or pick something up at KFC, Bulk Barn or Osmow’s for a holiday get together. Sharing food with loved ones is a sure-fire way to energize and fill your heart. Try something new, whether it’s snowshoeing or knitting a scarf. Challenges you choose, pursue and achieve can lift your spirits. It doesn’t need to be complicated. Make homemade holiday cards from supplies from the Dollar Tree or Walmart. Visit the Wasaga Society for the Arts for inspiration and try your hand at painting. A new skill can set you on a path to new adventures and discoveries. Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself with a visit to Wasaga Nail Spa, Sessions Cannabis, Active Healthcare or Merle Norman Cosmetics and Day Spa. These visits will add to your sense of calm and relaxation. Sleep is also essential to mental health. Prioritize sleep by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day.
everything
you need!
Finally, reach out. A phone call or socially distanced visit can make all the difference. Make a date to meet for coffee or a walk. Or set up a video call for some virtual face time. Spending time together is empowering. We all need a little love. If you’re looking for someone to put you in the holiday mood why not have a virtual visit with Santa Claus? The jolly fellow can be found virtually at the Stonebridge Town Centre starting December 15th. He takes suggestions, collects “naughty or nice” data and reports back to the elves. Visits this year will be virtual to keep everyone safe. Check out the website to book your visit. So come for a stroll, come for a meal with friends and family or come to do your weekly shopping – Stonebridge Town Centre has what you need. From our family to yours, have a safe and happy holiday season.

The Paint Bar
POTTERY, GLASS, CANVAS, CLAY AND MORE! The Paint Bar is a place for kids and adults to explore their creativity, a fun gathering spot for groups, parties, and individuals. No experience is necessary. Here you can create a one-of-a-kind work of art using pottery, glass, or canvas.
Now with two locations in Collingwood and Wasaga Beach, their doors are always open.
A personalized item painted by YOU, the artist, makes a memorable and heartfelt gift. For those looking for a more hands-on teaching experience, there are many classes and events for adults and children.
PAINT YOUR OWN POTTERY
When you come into the studio feel free to walk around and peruse the wide selection ranging from piggy banks and jewellery boxes to practical and useful items such as coffee mugs, pet bowls, dishes, cookie jars, and kitchen items. And of course, plenty of seasonal decor items for your home or gift-giving. New inventory is constantly arriving to keep the shelves stocked with fresh items for all ages.
KIDS NIGHT OUT
Kids come to paint their own ceramic project, watch a movie, and have pizza for dinner! These take place every Friday night from 5-7 pm and are only $30 per child. All kids’ parties are dropoff only, meaning the parents drop off their child and return when the party is over (insert extreme excitement here). Parents get the night off, and kids have a great night out!
ADULT PARTIES
The Paint Bar is a fun and creative place to host adult groups such as bachelorette parties, showers, birthdays, and just-because parties. When you book an adult pottery or canvas party you will have a private party room for three hours. Guests are welcome to bring their own beverages of choice, snacks, etc. You will also have a private instructor teaching you the project your group has selected from start to finish!
CLASSES WITH GLASS
Two forms of glass classes are offered on a regular basis, including a one-night glass fusion class, or for those really interested in the glass arts, a four-week traditional stained glass course.
KIDS PARTIES
All kids’ parties include two hours of studio time in a private party room, studio fees, a helpful host, balloon bouquet, specialty chair, and a spin at the wheel for the birthday boy or girl (you are also welcome to bring cake). Each child’s work-of-art will be glazed and kiln-fired to a brilliant, durable foodsafe finish. Pottery they will use and treasure forever!

Cancer Chat The holiday season is a time for happiness, the spirit of giving, and making pleasant memories with friends, family, and loved ones. But, unfortunately, an illness or poor medical diagnosis in the family can overwhelm warm Christmas traditions engendering uncertainty about the health of someone you love. December 2010 was a Christmas that will not be forgotten by Kasie Muir Hart from Akron, Ohio, who learned from doctors her six-year-old son Robert had cancer. She posted on Facebook, “Our lives changed in the blink of an eye.” Robert Hart was born in September 2004 in Akron. He was well known and liked by friends and family who affectionately referred to him as “Robert the Great.” Like other boys, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, video games, playing with Lego and spending time with his family and friends. At age six, Robert was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is cancer of the blood and bone marrow in which the bone marrow makes too many immature white blood cells called lymphocytes. The immature lymphocytes, also called leukemia cells, cannot properly do their job of fighting infection. As the number of leukemia cells in the blood and bone marrow increases, there is less room for healthy white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. As a result, the deficit in healthy blood cells can lead to infection, anemia, and easy bleeding. ALL is the most common type of cancer in children and can progress rapidly. Robert’s diagnosis presented with good statistics and suggested his cancer would respond well to treatment. With an estimated 90% cure rate for children with ALL, the family was told that with proper treatment, Robert would beat the disease and live a full life. There are several different types of treatment available for children with ALL, including chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy, all of which aim at controlling cancer cell growth by either killing the cancer cells or preventing them from dividing. Embodying the Christmas spirit, in 2017, seven-year-old Allie Hart, Kasie’s daughter and sister to Robert, wrote a letter to Santa. She did not ask for toys as other kids might. Instead, Allie asked Santa to cure her brother’s cancer. Allie’s letter reads, “Dear Santa, the gift I really want for Christmas is well, I’m not sure if you can do this but I would like you to try. I want a cure for cancer because my 13-year-old brother has cancer. I have been really good this year, please try. With Love, Allie.”

Kasie shared the letter her daughter wrote to Santa on Facebook, posting, “It is the sweetest and saddest thing I’ve ever read.” Possibly containing a sprinkle of Santa’s magic, the story quickly circulated the globe and was featured by news agencies in the US and as far away as New Zealand. Kasie wrote at the time, “Now if anyone can find the cure for childhood cancer in the next few weeks, that would be swell if not a little girl is going to wonder why.”

Robert spent half of his life undergoing hundreds of rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, spinal taps, bone marrow biopsies, CAR-T therapies (immunotherapy) and anything else his doctors could think of to control the cancer progression. After four relapses the Hart family prepared themselves for the worst outcome. Kasie wrote on Facebook, “We were out of options. Our last stay in the hospital ended with an infection, an infection any other person could fight, but Robert’s immunity had nothing left to give.” Sadly, in April 2019, at the early age of fourteen, Robert Hart passed away after a courageous battle with cancer that persisted for over eight years. He passed peacefully in the loving arms of his mother and father. Friends and family fondly remember Robert the Great as a kind-hearted, polite, easygoing, and generous boy. A neighbour of the family remembers Robert setting up a lemonade stand one Saturday in his driveway to raise money for the pediatrics department at the hospital. Purportedly, he raised a lot of money that day. We may define the Christmas spirit as the spirit of giving, hope, understanding, helping, and goodwill towards others. The Hart family promotes this spirit yearround funding targeted research directed at conquering childhood cancer. “In honour of Robert the Great” and the thousands of other children with leukemia, organizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society continue to need your help. The Christmas spirit, often amiss in the commercialization of the holiday season, should never be forgotten. Holiday GIFT GUIDE
The holiday season is the perfect time to support local businesses Small businesses long have been the heart and soul of local communities. There is something to be said about being on a first-name basis with a local restaurateur or another small business owner, as such familiarity often translates into exemplary service. What better ways to celebrate the diversity, uniqueness and creativity of independent, local businesses than by supporting them during the busiest shopping season of the year? Every time you grab a coffee from a local café, purchase a piece of artwork from a neighbourhood artist or dine at a familyrun restaurant, you are supporting local business owners and strengthening our communities. Here are some ways to make shopping small a priority this holiday season. 1
Shop local
The concept is simple but effective. Opting to shop in local stores can help small businesses take root. Before making holiday shopping lists, visit local stores and base gift ideas on items they have in stock. Chances are those gifts will be one-of-a-kind. 2
Take inventory of sales by keeping up on local social media
Build holiday shopping lists around the offerings at local businesses. The holiday season breeds excitement. Therefore, when shoppers are in local stores, they can snap pictures of products and overflowing shopping bags and post them online while praising local businesses. 3
Dine out at local restaurants
While you are there get some shopping done by purchasing gift cards/ certificates. All businesses have slow periods, and post-holidays is often a time when sales stagnate. Gift cards may bring new customers into local businesses who might otherwise not have patronized them, potentially creating new repeat customers.
SHOP ONLINE • PICK UP IN-STORE
4
Think about subscription gifts
Enrollment in a health club or a massage therapy service are gifts that keep on giving for the recipient, but also help ensure consistent incoming cash for the business providing the service. 5
Shop in person
In person shopping is convenient. Much is made of the convenience of online shopping. And, it’s undeniable that the ability to shop at all hours of the day and night is convenient. However, in person shopping, especially when shopping for others, is much more convenient than shoppers may realize. When shopping in person, you can get a feel for an item, size it up and even inspect its quality prior to purchasing it. That can save you from that disappointing feeling of receiving an item in the mail only to realize it’s poorly made or oddly sized and therefore unlikely to fit its eventual recipient. Within minutes of entering a store and walking around, you may see a handful of gifts that will ultimately be great for various people on your list, even if you had no idea what to get prior to entering. Since the onset of the pandemic, people have spent more time than ever within the confines of their homes. The 2021 holiday shopping season provides a great opportunity to get out of the house and disconnect from devices. You can even plan a shopping spree alongside friends or family members you weren’t able to see last holiday season. When shopping this holiday season, look to the local businesses in your community that help make towns and cities unique.

Gift-wrapping tips and tricks Much of the focus of each holiday season is on gift-giving, but all those gifts will eventually need to be wrapped. Stacks of presents just waiting to be covered with paper and ribbon can overwhelm gift givers, prompting them to put off wrapping gifts until the last minute. Hesitant wrappers with a pile of gifts to wrap can use these tricks to make the process go smoothly. Instead of looking at wrapping as yet another chore, try to envision how the recipient will feel peeling open the paper and finding the gift inside. Wrapping can be the prelude to the gift itself, and intensify the anticipation. The wrapping paper or style also may draw on aspects of the gift itself. For example, a knit scarf can be placed in a crocheted stocking.
Consumable Gifts FOR EVERYONE ON YOUR LIST
1
Handle oddly-shaped items
Wrapping rectangular boxes can be a snap, but what about something round or full of angles? Think about placing oddly-shaped items inside another item to make the shape more uniform. For example, shoe boxes, coffee cans and even paper towel rolls can hold items. Then place the wrapping on these containers. 2
Cover prices
To enable easy exchanges or returns, do not cut off the price tags of gifts. Instead, place a festive sticker over the dollar amount, but leave the scan bar visible. This way, the gift recipient can return the gift with ease if necessary. 3
Keep supplies at the ready
Devote a bin or bins to wrapping supplies and tools. Having scissors, paper, tape, ribbon, and more in a designated spot will cut down on having to hunt and peck when it comes time to wrap. In addition, a rotary cutter can cut long straight or decorative edges on wrapping paper, which may be easier to use than scissors. 4

Wrap on a firm surface
Devote a table or counter to wrapping gifts. This will keep the paper taut and neat and make it easier to cut and position. You risk tearing the paper or puncturing it when working on carpeting or bedding. 5
Colour or pattern code gifts
It’s easy to visualize who gets what gift when each recipient has their own unique wrapping paper. This is also a handy idea when wrapping gifts from Santa, as it will differentiate the Santa gifts from the ones being given by mom and dad. With a few helpful pointers, wrapping gifts can be easy. And for those who prefer to skip the wrapping themselves, many malls and retailers offer complimentary wrapping for a small donation to charity.

Holiday decorating ideas The holidays often involve purchasing gifts for close friends and loved ones and making a delicious meal the entire family will love. But nothing sets the holiday scene and overall mood more so than beautiful decorations and other seasonal accoutrements. Many people leave no room untouched for the holidays, meaning colour schemes or trinkets may carry through from top to bottom. Decking the halls this season can be even easier with some of these handy ideas. 1
Holiday timeline
If you keep holiday photo cards each year, put them in chronological order and hang them from a piece of garland from the mantel or drape on a staircase banister. This can be a fun way to see how your children or other family members have grown. 2
Plan the outside
Exterior illumination and other exterior decorations share the holiday spirit with others. However, it can be overwhelming trying to visualize it all without a plan in place. Take a photo of the house and map out where you want lights and decorations to go. Then with your “map” in hand, you can more readily purchase supplies and start decorating. 3
Go for a specific natural colour scheme
If you desire an overall holiday feel but aren’t interested in Santa figurines or kitschy elements, decorating with colour in mind is essential. It’s easy to tie things together with some natural elements in your desired palette.
For example, white, gold and green may look beautiful. Put boxwood clippings and white amaryllis flowers together. Pine cones, twigs and holly pieces also can add touches to mantels, doorways and table centrepieces. 4
Ornaments elsewhere
Who says ornaments only have to go on a tree? Display antique or favourite ornaments by hanging them from beautiful ribbons throughout the home. 5
Scent the scene
Hang something aromatic on the tree to mingle with the pine. For example, fresh cinnamon sticks tied with twine or ribbon can be nestled among the boughs. Another scented idea is to make pine cone candles and use pine or cinnamon scents to make them smell just like the season. Always follow safety precautions, especially when using candles, hanging lights, and plugging multiple items into electric sockets. With ingenuity and safety in mind, holiday decorations can be extra special.

Great gifts for tweens and teens this holiday season
Have a Merry & Sweet Christmas! Gifts for everyone on your list with a sweet tooth
Children often marvel at the world around them. They're delighted to receive just about any toy and play with items that others may not see as fun - including everything from mixing bowls to cardboard boxes. Slowly that cherubic toddler turns into a school-aged wonder and later into a young adult trying to find their place in the world. With each passing year, the task of finding gifts for tweens and teenagers becomes that much more challenging. While most parents and other relatives may never seem "cool" in the eyes of their teens, they can gift the tweens and teens they love with presents that will earn them a few extra brownie points. The following are some gift ideas that are tailor-made for tweens and teens.

The gift of being together Spending time with a teen or tween can be challenging with school, friends, jobs and extra curricular activities. Why not give them a gift card or certificate for something you can do together? For instance - the movies, golf, dining out, bowling, horseback riding, a weekend getaway, etc.
Beauty and grooming products Many teens and tweens want to look and smell their best so there are many products to considers such as: make-up, cologne, facial care, curling wands or straightening iron, shaving kits, gift certificate for a manicures or haircut.

Bedroom décor/gadgets Both girls and boys may enjoy customizing their rooms as they see fit. Fin and functional gifts for their room may include: LED strip lights or fairy lights, desk organizers, ring light on a tripod, charging hubs for devices, bluetooth speakers, artwork or frames for the walls.

Gift cards Teens try to keep up with the latest styles, but it can be costly, especially for trending styles and brands. However, a gift card, clothing, or shoes from one of their favourite retailers can help them build their ensembles that much quicker. Restaurant gift cards are always popular for kids on the go. Teens and tweens are notoriously challenging to shop for, but, with some knowledge, loved ones can find gifts tweens and teens are more likely to use and enjoy. It's always a good idea to talk to their parents, siblings or friends to see if there is a specific brand or item they are looking for.
