A FEAST FOR ALL The 6th annual Christmas Day Feast in Collingwood was another wonderful time! We had a packed house with lots of colour, lights, noise, and laughter amongst our guests and volunteers who made it such a perfect and magical Christmas day. The carollers did a wonderful job, Santa made a surprise guest appearance and the food was outstanding! Plates were piled high with turkey, ham, stuffing, potatoes, veggies and finger-licking good gravy. The meal was topped off with home-made apple crisp and vanilla bean ice cream. Yum. We are so grateful to the community who donated funds, services and supplies to make this amazing day possible please check out our Thank You ad in this issue, to see the list of generous folks. We can’t say enough about our volunteers who did an outstanding job keeping everything running smoothly and brought smiles and hugs by the dozen. Let’s all keep this spirit of kindness and joy alive every day of the year. Submitted by: Shelby Worts

Ted Yoannou: In Your Corner THEY JUST TOOK THE FUN OUT OF STEALING For about 150 years, the sport of baseball has followed a very simple method for catchers to relay signs to pitchers as to which pitch to throw. In his crouch behind home plate, the catcher flashes some fingers between his legs. Typically, one finger for a fastball, two for for a curve ball, three for a slider and four for a change up. That’s it. Pretty simple. And, over time, opposing batters tried to gain an advantage by “stealing” the signs, so they would know which pitch was coming. They might try to take a quick look behind them to catch a glimpse of how many fingers were being flashed by the catcher. But, this was never looked upon too favourably, and often resulted in the next pitch landing squarely in the batter’s ribcage. And, perhaps the umpire would scold the batter to cut it out and threaten to expel him from the game. More commonly, if the batter had a teammate on second base, that teammate could try to sneak a peak, and relay the sign to the batter. Touch his baseball cap to indicate a fastball, or clap his hands for a change up, for example. And, for the past century and half, that’s pretty much been it. Not a whole lot of evolution in this cat and mouse game, save for some efforts to further disguise the signals by things like the catcher flashing a whole sequence of fingers and having only one count, say the 4th time the fingers were put down, that’s the signal that mattered. It was fun and considered part of baseball’s gamesmanship. If you could figure out which pitch was coming with your other teammates on the diamond, why not, go for it. But, in the last few years, technology reared its ugly head and invaded America’s favourite pastime. Some teams started developing complicated systems for stealing signs and relaying them to their batters. Cameras in the outfield sent the information to players or coaches’ smart phones or monitors in the dugout, and then someone would then bang on a garbage can to signal to the batter which pitch was coming. This is a clear breach of Major League Baseball’s rules on using technology in this way. The allegations have recently been proven by a league investigation, leading to sanctions and suspensions of members of two recent World Series champions, the Houston Astros and the Boston Red Sox. There are even allegations that some players had electronic buzzers under their uniforms and were being tipped off that way. Think of the implications. If you were a player on one of the teams that lost in the playoffs to the cheating teams, you were robbed of your chance for a World Series championship ring, and the fame and glory that comes with it, not to mention Disney commercials. Or, if you were an average pitcher struggling to keep your spot on your team’s roster, a couple of untimely home runs given up by you to these cheating teams may have just ended your career.

@sutherlandinsurance

So, how will baseball solve this problem? Probably with more technology, unfortunately. Something like a coach hidden off in a secret and secure location somewhere in the stadium, whispering the signs into the ears of the catcher and pitcher through Apple’s newest wireless Bluetooth ear pods. Uggh. No more good old fashioned sign stealing by the players only and games being decided solely by their efforts. Tom Hanks famously said there’s no crying in baseball, but boy, there sure is today. Submitted by: Ted C. Yoannou, B.A., LL.B. MEAL TIME CHOICE FOR PATIENTS IS NOW A REALITY AT CGMH Meal time is changing at the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital (CGMH). Patients can now choose from a variety of nutritious, prepared fresh meals, cooked in house by a Red Seal certified chef, who is part of the hospital’s Food Services department. CGMH has launched the Freshflex initiative in partnership with Aramark, the company who oversees the hospital’s dietary and environmental service areas (EVS).

A FIRST LOOK AT SESSIONS Collingwood’s (and Simcoe County’s) first legal cannabis store opened its doors on December 21st at 312 Horontario St. Sessions Cannabis strives to bring people together by providing a cannabis retail experience that is inviting, comfortable and informative. They have professionals to help you understand the difference in their products that are legal and Health Canada quality controlled so you know exactly what you’re consuming. Photos: mycollingwood.ca | Story: Georgian Life Media Inc.

“As the first medium-size hospital in Ontario to implement the Freshflex initiative we are thrilled to provide nutritious meals to patients, prepared fresh on-site, thereby further enhancing the patient experience,” says Norah Holder, CGMH president and CEO. “Ultimately, if patients are eating healthy foods and getting the rest they require, this all contributes to the healing process.”

The hospital and Aramark worked collaboratively on menu enhancements that now meet more than 20 therapeutic diets, providing patients with the nourishment they require, depending on their condition.

The hospital has implemented a one week cycle menu where patients choose from a variety of selections offered each meal. The meal selection follows Canada’s updated food guide, which has recommendations around increasing omega 3 fats, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and lean meats where possible.

“Over the last 12 months the team onsite have been diligently preparing for the implementation of Freshflex, with the support of Aramark Corporate. Preparations for the implementation have also included renovations and improvements to the Food Services department,” says Natasha Mooney, manager, Food Services, Clinical Nutrition and EVS. Dietary employees began meeting with patients today to provide choices for the following days meals. “We will be providing exceptional customer service and aim to be a highlight in the patient’s day,” says Mooney. Additionally, as part of the implementation, new computer software was launched that syncs with the patient’s medical record to capture any noted dietary requests or restrictions. This ensures that only suitable selections for the patient’s diet are presented, as part of the meal selection. This project was made possible in part through community donations, in which a $350,000 campaign to support the Freshflex implementation met its goal this fall. “We are so grateful to the donors who helped make this important investment in patient care possible. We continue to be innovative leaders in healthcare despite our undersized and aging facility. We will access technology and innovative programming whenever possible to continue to ensure patient satisfaction and quality healthcare,” says Jory PritchardKerr, CGMH Foundation president & CEO.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS HOME FIRES:

Home fires can happen anywhere at anytime, but are most likely to occur during winter in Canada. The best way to protect yourself and your family from a home fire is to follow these steps: • Check your smoke and Carbon Monoxide alarms every month. • Know and practice your evacuation plan. • Get out and STAY OUT - never return to a burning building.

BEFORE:

• The key to staying safe is to prepare and to have an emergency plan in place. • Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home. Test the alarms every month and replace the batteries twice a year, at daylight savings time (March and November). • If you are a tenant, test your evacuation plan with your landlord and neighbours. • If you live in a highrise, know how to evacuate the building. Use stairs instead of the elevator. • Make sure everyone knows where the fire extinguishers are kept.

PREVENT FIRES:

Tuesday–Saturday 1130am–10pm

• Clean chimneys annually. • Keep flammable items at least one metre from heat sources, such as space heaters, fireplaces and the stove. • Never smoke in bed. • Never leave candles unattended. • Stay in the kitchen when using the stove top. If you have to leave the room, turn off the stove. • Talk to children about the dangers of fire and keep lighters and matches out of reach. • Most home fires happen during the holiday period and the winter months. Christmas trees can get very dry when inside and can catch fire very easily. Make sure you water the tree regularly and use approved lights. • Learn fire safety techniques and teach them to your family regularly. Make sure everyone is • familiar with the technique “STOP, DROP, AND ROLL” in case clothing catches on fire. • Show children the alarms and practice what to do if the alarms sound. • Talk with your family and neighbours about what you would do during a house fire. • Have practice drills with your family, so you know what to do and are prepared.

• Get out and stay out. Follow your escape plan. Do not stop. • If closed doors or handles are warm, use an alternate exit. • Crawl under low smoke. • If smoke, heat or flames block your exit, stay in the room with the doors closed. Place a wet towel under the door and call 9-1-1. Open a window and wave a brightly coloured cloth or use a flashlight to signal for help. • Once you are outside, go to your designated meeting place and then send one person to call the fire department. If you cannot get to your meeting place, follow your family emergency communication plan.

AFTER: BAKERY • BUTCHER • DELI • PHARMACY WINE & BEER • IN-STORE STARBUCKS

640 First St. Collingwood 705-444-5252 Open 7am-10pm 10

• Do not enter your home until the Fire Department says it is safe. Use caution when entering your home. Stay away from fallen, damaged or sparking electrical wires. If you see any of these, alert the Fire Department right away. • Check on vulnerable family, friends and neighbours who may require special assistance. • Have injuries treated by a medical professional. • Contact your local government office for help in finding temporary housing if you cannot stay in your home due to fire damage. • Contact your insurance company, if necessary. Ask what you should do next and what the overall process is. • Follow community health guidance on safe cleanup and safe use of face masks. Wear leather gloves and heavy soled shoes to protect hands and feet. • Household items often take several cleanings to be rid of smoke odours, soot and stains. • Ensure your food and water is safe. Discard any food that may have been exposed to heat, smoke or soot and do not use water that may be contaminated. GOAL: Raise $60,000 COLDEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR IN ITS 5TH YEAR SUPPORTING THE HOME HORIZON BARBARA WEIDER HOUSE On February 22nd, 2020, Collingwood will be the scene of a sea of walkers in support of Home Horizon’s Barbara Weider House for youth facing homelessness. Imagine a cold, wintery evening, snow is falling, the air is chilly, it’s the perfect night to curl up inside by a fire. Instead, hundreds take to Hurontario St. in Collingwood walking together for a cause in which they believe. Now imagine all of those people gathering together after the event, stranger sitting beside stranger, warming up with a hot meal and festive live music. The strength of community spending time together in an act of warmth for youth that are in need of such comfort. February 22, 2020, is the night that the people of South Georgian Bay will join 120 communities across Canada for the Coldest Night of the Year for a 2 or 5 km walk. In the cold of February, many of us look forward to the chance to snuggle up in the warmth of our homes. Not everyone has that same luxury. The Coldest Night of the Year is a fundraiser that raises money and awareness for the hungry, homeless and hurting. Despite it being a relatively invisible problem in our community, youth homelessness does exist. In response to this need, Home Horizon, a local charitable organization with 11 years of history helping homeless women and children in our community, built the Barbara Weider House. The Barbara Weider House provides a safe home and a welcoming communal environment - something many of these youth have never had. All the youth have access to counselling and social and life skills programs to help them successfully rebuild their lives and transition to independent living and adulthood as opposed to continuing down a path of homelessness that may lead to larger problems. ABOUT THE BARBARA WEIDER HOUSE: In July, 2017, the Barbara Weider House opened a 6-bedroom, 7-bed facility, dedicated to youth aged 16-24 facing homelessness. The Barbara Weider House provides safe transitional housing, coupled with access to counseling, social, and life skills programs to help these youth successfully rebuild their lives and transition to independent living and adulthood. In addition, they offer programs to youth in the community and on their waiting list, aimed at empowering and educating them with the skills and abilities needed to make positive, healthy life choices. There are approximately 45 youth on the waitlist for the Barabara Wieder House. This is the highest waitlist they have had – it is a serious crisis across Canada and our region is no different.

PROGRAMS: The first step in dealing with youth facing homelessness is to help them find a safe roof over their head. This could be the Barbara Weider House or help connecting them with other housing service organizations in our community. The first priority is they need to be safe and inside for the night. In addition, we offer access to counselling and social and life skills programs to help our clients successfully rebuild their lives and transition to independent living and adulthood. The goal is to support vulnerable youth in rebuilding their lives and integrating back into their communities, as opposed to continuing down a path of homelessness that may lead to larger problems. Key to our approach is that the youth are provided with a range of support programs that will help them learn life skills, have positive relationships with peers and adults, and re-engage with school, employment training, and/or employment. Collingwood, Creemore, Meaford, Stayner, Thornbury, Wasaga Beach, Town of Blue Mountains STORIES FROM THE HOUSE ARIANA: Ariana* (name changed) age 16 had suffered many years of abuse at her family home at the hands of her stepfather. Because of the abuse in her family home, Ariana was withdrawn, selfabusive and self-destructive near the point of having to be institutionalized. After reaching out to Home Horizon, thanks to a connection made at her school, Ariana was able to escape the clutches of continued mental and physical abuse. She has since become stable at her school and making decent grades. Ariana is able to come home to a safe and secure environment where she has stated that the staff at Home Horizon are like family. With life skills training, programs and one on one counselling, Ariana was able to regain her self-esteem and confidence to the point she has recently applied to college with the hopes of working toward a career in Social Services and Psychiatry. TROY: After years of abuse and mistreatment at his family home at the hand of a single parent suffering from mental illness and compounded with drug and alcohol abuse, “Troy (age 17 at the time), was able to save himself from jail, homelessness and possibly death due to the work done at Home Horizon. Troy came to us as a last ditch effort to stay out of jail and live without the threat of abuse. Troy had severe difficulty in trusting others due to being misjudged based on his appearance and history of violence in his former home. Through the connections made through counselling and support within Home Horizon, Troy was able to develop sustainable life skills and receive mental health support through a primary care physician and psychiatrist. Troy graduated to a permanent home recently and receives ongoing guidance and counselling from the staff at Home Horizon.

HOCKEY FOR AUTISM AWARENESS The Meaford Knights hockey team dedicated their charity game to Autism Awareness, with all proceeds donated to Community Living Meaford and Events for Life who both support and provide programs for adults with special needs. On January 23rd, at the Meaford & St. Vincent Community Centre, the Knights wore special event jerseys that were auctioned off. The arena was filled with family-friendly activities: beer garden, raffle prizes, bake sale, chuck-a-puck games, and shoot-outs during the intermission. The final score was 3-1 for the Knights over the Bradford Bulls. But, we’re all winners in this game of life! Photos/Story by Marissa Dolotallas. See more photos on www.georgianlife.ca

CANCER CHAT Hey Georgian Life readers, I want to share a story about Donna Pepin, a strong, resilient and inspiring woman who has been living with ovarian cancer since 2006. Ovarian cancer is the most fatal of gynecological cancers with 2,800 Canadian woman diagnosed each year. Half of these women will not live five years past their diagnosis. Low survival rates reflect lack of disease understanding and treatment options following the emergence of chemo-resistant disease. “Research is the only way to stop this disease,” says Dr. Barbara Vanderhyden, ovarian cancer researcher at the University of Ottawa. Donna is a cancer survivor and for the past decade has advocated for Ovarian Cancer Canada (OCC) and was chosen to lobby the Federal Government for money to support ovarian cancer research. “As someone who has survived the disease, I feel an obligation to women everywhere because we deserve better.” Donna proposes, “Government needs to do a better job in approving new drugs and increase funding for medical research.” In 2006, Donna was diagnosed with borderline serous ovarian cancer, a subtype of disease common in younger woman. “The tumors were impressively large, my surgeon referred to them as the cantaloupe and the grapefruit” Donna now laughs. Donna underwent several rounds of chemo before her doctors realized she had a chemo-resistant disease. Given a 10-15% chance of survival, Donna started to lose hope for the first time since diagnosis. “I lost trust in my body. I felt like I had run out of options.” As it turned out, surgery a few months later was the best case outcome. Her doctors were confident the cancer was completely removed and told her, “You are going to be just fine.” Donna recalls, “This was hard to accept and wrap my brain around after a year of rollercoaster of hope.” As the years went by, Donna distanced herself from ovarian cancer and believed she would live a healthy life. Then in June 2016, she experienced debilitating pain out of nowhere. Ten years after the initial diagnosis, Donna was diagnosed with recurring metastatic ovarian cancer. Resilient in the face of adversity, Donna proclaims “I have done this before and I can do this again!” Donna embarked on estrogen suppressive therapy to starve her tumors of the essential growth hormone. Encouragingly, her tumors shrunk by 25% and have remained stable. Once in the fashion industry and brand ambassador for a prestigious Canadian clothing designer, Donna now advocates for woman with ovarian cancer. Since 2008, Donna has committed to volunteer with OCC as fundraiser, public speaker and educator. “It’s empowering to take action in the face of this disease,” Donna maintains, “It can feel like the cancer is in control, but by advocating I am taking back some of that power. Speaking out has been cathartic, it’s a huge part of my ongoing healing process.” OCC is solely dedicated to overcome ovarian cancer by providing leadership in research, advocacy and support. For years, OCC has pressed for federal investments to address the urgency around developing ovarian cancer research. In 2018, teams consisting of OCC staff member, research physician and person living with ovarian cancer were assembled and met with MPs. Elizabeth Baugh (OCC CEO), Dr. Vanderhyden and Donna comprised one such team. In March 2019, the Federal Government announced a $10 million dollar investment for ovarian cancer research. “WE DID IT!” Donna shouts behind tears of joy. Donna continues to work with OCC and is now the voice of ovarian cancer patients in Canada in her new role as “Patient Advisor” with a seat on the Governing Counsel to oversee the project. Thankfully, Donna’s cancer remains stable with no new growth. Donna’s message for woman newly diagnosed is powerful; you must have faith and believe in yourself and your medical team. “You are stronger than you think you are!” Link to Donna’s Story: https://ovariancanada.org/storiesand-media/In-Her-Own-Words/Donna Submitted by: Dr. Oliver Kent, Scientific Associate and cancer researcher at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Do you have an idea or question you would like to read about in the Cancer Chat? Email (kent.uhn@gmail.com) or text (416-707-6546) and let me know!

I should probably also let you know though that I am an FIV+ kitty but that doesn’t mean I can’t live a long and happy life with you! I am a special kitty but I don’t require much more care than any other kitty cat. All I need is a vet visit twice a year to make sure I’m in my best shape! Just ask one of our adoption counsellors to explain how awesome FIV+ cats are, we give the most love!

CANCER TREATMENT AND HEARING LOSS Certain drugs used in the treatment of cancer can have side-effects that include hearing loss. A common platinum-based chemotherapy drug known as Cisplatin, is used in the treatment of bladder, ovarian, and testicular cancers among others. It also happens to be one of the most ototoxic which means it can cause damage to the inner ear. This damage can be in the form of hearing loss, ringing in the ears called tinnitus, or a combination of the two.

Â

Cisplatin has been found to cause permanent hearing loss in 40-80% of adults and at least 50% of children. Furthermore, researchers discovered that in both mice and humans, Cisplatin remained in the cochlea (the part of the inner ear responsible for hearing) for months or even years post treatment. When compared to other organs, Cisplatin is usually gone within days or weeks. This drug’s presence in the cochlea can damage various components of the inner ear including the fragile nerve cells that transmit sound and the surrounding blood vessels. Researchers believe the reason Cisplatin is so ototoxic is due to how well it enters the inner ear. It is able to pass through a barrier called the blood-labyrinth barrier that is similar to the blood-brain barrier. Once the Cisplatin enters, it has a difficult time exiting. Thus, the Cisplatin builds up in the inner ear resulting in hearing loss. It is also interesting to note, that if Cisplatin is used in conjunction with radiation that occurs close to the ear (i.e. head or neck), the risk of Cisplatin-induced hearing loss can increase. If an individual is receiving, or is going to receive, Cisplatin for cancer treatment, it would be beneficial for the individual to have an Audiologist perform a hearing test to establish a baseline. As treatment progresses, further hearing tests can be completed for comparison. Even after the treatment has ended, it is important for the Audiologist to monitor the patient’s hearing. Cisplatin-induced hearing loss can progress over time and it can also occur after treatment has been completed. By identifying the risks upfront, and having a team dedicated to your health and wellbeing, you can prepare yourself for the possibility of hearing loss - and know the options for addressing and hopefully improving your hearing health. POSSIBLE INCREASE TO THE CAPITAL GAINS INCLUSION RATE Following the 2019 federal election, The Liberal Party of Canada formed a minority government. As is often the case with a minority, the Liberals may need to rely on the support of another federal party to pass certain agenda items from their election platform. This support might come from the New Democratic Party (NDP), whose philosophies often align with those of the Liberal Party. During their election campaign, The NDP proposed to increase the capital gains inclusion rate from 50% to 75%. This has Canadians wondering if an increase to the capital gains inclusion rate may occur in the next federal budget. Although a hike to the inclusion rate is still only a matter of speculation, here is some food for thought. Let’s start off by discussing the nature of capital gains and the capital gains inclusion rate. A capital gain refers to the profit that results from the sale of a capital asset, such as a stock, bond or real estate (other than your primary residence), where the sale price exceeds the purchase price. The capital gains inclusion rate is the percentage that is applied to capital gain you realize. The result, known as the taxable capital gain, is taxed at your marginal tax rate and included as your taxable income. The table below shows the history of the inclusion rate, since taxing capital gains was first introduced in 1972: Time Period

Inclusion Rate

1972 to 1987

50%

1988 to 1989

66 2/3% 75%

1990 to Feb 27, 2000 Feb 28 to Oct 17, 2000

66 2/3% 50%

After Oct 17, 2000

Consider the timing for rebalancing your portfolio. If you have large unrealized capital gains, and rebalancing is appropriate from an investment standpoint, consider whether to implement the rebalancing before the federal budget date. This way, any capital gains triggered would be subject to the current 50% inclusion rate. If you aren’t able to trigger a capital gain before the inclusion rate increases (and that is, if it increases) consider the tax savings from donating securities in-kind to charity. When you donate a publicly listed security in-kind with accrued capital gains, you benefit from the elimination of the capital gain tax plus the donation tax credit. A BRIDGE TO HOPE Service above self, the Rotary International motto was played out beautifully as HHART (Hispaniola Humanitarian Assistance and Relief Team) volunteer teams helped improve the lives of forgotten and impoverished people of Haitian descent living in the bateys (makeshift villages) of Dominican Republic. Two groups of volunteers made up of medical doctors, dentists, hygienists, carpenters, photographers, students and nurses helped Team Leader, Steve Wallace, accomplish amazing goals like installing solar lights, electrical panels, water filtration systems, etc. Bryan Davies, a local photographer was part of this effort once again to document the trip and provide printed family portraits to people who have never before seen themselves in a picture.
