THE ULTIMATE
GUIDE HELLO WINTER
JANUARY 2020
HAPPY NEW YEAR! HAPPY NEW DECADE! The excitement of the holidays is over and some of us may have overindulged as we frown at the weigh scales and bank accounts. I took a quick trip to Las Vegas with the family, and while it was fun I was certainly happy to return to our piece of paradise we call home. So, during this time of year I try to focus on positive thoughts, make resourceful resolutions and get excited about the year ahead.
NEW nutriplenish™
If all else fails to brighten my day, I just think of all the winter activities we can partake in and then imagine that spring is right around the corner, however far off that might actually be. After all, there are an array of outdoor sports and activities that can make the short winter days go by even faster.
HYDRATES WITH OMEGA-5 ORGANIC POMEGRANATE OIL
LUSH, VISIBLY HEALTHIER HAIR. HYDRATED UNTIL YOUR NEXT SHAMPOO. 94% NATURALLY DERIVED, WITH POWERFUL SUPERFOODS. VEGAN.
I will break out the dusty snowhoes and maybe even give cross country skiing a try, something I haven’t done since I was a child. Skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing and snowmobiling are all activities that get the heart pumping and make for some great memories, photos, and can end with a cup of hot cocoa, or whatever your poison. Winter will end, so why not enjoy it while it is here. Pull on those extra socks, skis, skates, or shoes, grab a toque and mittens, and go for it! Follow us on:

It’s hard to believe that Georgian Life has been around for 33 years (formerly Collingwood Life). I have owned it for just over eight years and with all of the amazing things to cover in the area, we promise to keep sharing the stories that matter for those who live, work and play here. I’d like to take a moment to thank all of the amazing people who make this publication a reality every month! Sal and Victoria for drumming up ad sales which pay all the bills; Dave, Bryan, Marissa and Julie for being “everywhere, all the time” capturing all those beautiful smiles; and Simone, Valerie, Marissa and Rielyn for all those late nights manning the photo booth. I look forward to your return later this year Alyshia! I wish you the best in your personal health and relationships and success in your career. Whatever lies ahead, embrace the new year with a renewed spirit. Here’s to a year ahead full of moments that make you smile! - Selena Blais

A TASTE OF YOUR TOWN Blue Mountain Resort and the Blue Mountain Village Association hosted their annual Homeowners Party Reception “A Taste of Your Town” at the Village Conference Centre on November 23rd. It was a fundraiser in support of Collingwood General & Marine Hospital and the Blue Mountain Village Foundation. Guests enjoyed a tasty travel experience with local vendors of wine, cider, beer, and spirits and professionally curated light fair designed to pair with each selection. Photos: mycollingwood.ca. THOSE CRAZY CANUCKS Nick Hamilton of RBC Dominion Securities with Summerhill Entertainment presented “Those Crazy Canucks” and “The Dream Never Dies”. From Nick Hamilton’s website: What a night it was on Friday November 22nd as we hosted a sold out crowd at the Historic Gayety theatre in Collingwood. Three of the Crazy Canucks themselves were in attendance (Dave Irwin, Ken Read and Todd Brooker) as was the director of the films from the era, Bill Johnston of Summerhill Entertainment. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who was involved for their generous support as well as our 320 guests for supporting the cause through online donations and cash donations at the door. Our dear family friend Allan de la Plante generously donated two original paintings of Read and Irwin which sold via silent auction and have found new homes in the area. Our good friend Todd Brooker donated 3 vintage World Cup bibs from his racing days including one from Kitzbuehel which raised a good chunk more! We had terrific raffle and silent auction prizes from Alpine Canada, Atomic, Mike Wiegele and the Read family. All said and done we are enormously proud to say we raised $10,275 towards Canada’s Alpine Ski Team. We foster a tremendous ski community here in Collingwood and I believe it is important that we continue to tell our stories, celebrate past successes and build foundations for future success. Our little community here in Collingwood has always been part of the equation. Mostly all of the Crazy Canucks have deep ties to this area. Through events like this I hope we can remind ourselves of the potential we continue to have and how we must endeavour to foster it. We need to support our athletes to the best of our ability and to give them a fighting chance on the hill. Photos: mycollingwood.ca

December 6th was one of the most magical evenings of the season in Clearview Township as the Stayner Chamber of Commerce hosted their Christmas tree lighting. Hundreds turned out to this wonderfully festive annual event at Station Park, beautifully adorned with new illuminated snowflakes and lights galore. Guests kept warm with free hot chocolate, hot soup, hotdogs and treats as they enjoyed carolling, greetings from the Mayor and members of Clearview Council, the tree lighting and of course eagerly awaited the appearance of Santa Claus, who arrived with a little help from the Clearview Fire Department. Ted Yoannou: In Your Corner The Zen of Happy Hour This year, I have one New Year’s resolution to start our 21st Century version of the Roaring Twenties, and unlike all previous unsuccessful ones from January 1st’s long past, I’m following through with this one … no, seriously, honest … I really mean it. More Happy Hours. The term “happy hour” can be traced back to Shakespeare. King Henry never wanted to miss one, “Therefore, my lords, omit no happy hour, that may give furtherance to our expedition”, and neither did that bon vivant Falstaff, “Come, I will go drink with you, but I cannot (stay for) dinner.” It became popular again in last century’s Roaring Twenties, when people during the Prohibition Era would meet secretly to share a few drinks for a happy hour or two, before going to a public restaurant for dinner, where alcohol consumption was illegal. These days, it has been commercialized by bars and pubs, where the price for drinks and appetizers are significantly discounted for a few happy hours, usually to attract the after-work crowd. But, the true beauty of happy hour is that it is different things to different people. Happy hour is an attitude and a way of life. The location doesn’t matter, it can be on your back deck, living room, in a pub or a park. The people involved can, and should, vary. Happy hours may involve food and beverages, or just food, or just beverages. And, the beverages can be alcoholic, but they don’t need to be. I’ve only recently discovered the Zen of Happy Hour, but I think I have figured out its essential three elements. 1. You need to earn it. The best happy hours come after a hard day, you’ve put in a good effort, did your best, got a lot done, now it’s time to relax and unwind. 2. Happy hours need to be communal. A small group of family, friends, neighbours, co-workers. And, if possible, multigenerational. It’s great for your spirits to be around people, many people, different people. But, not too big a group as voices need to be heard. It’s happy hour for crying out loud, not a cocktail party. 3. Topics of discussion must be interesting. The day’s events, contemporary issues, philosophy, great books and movies. And, of course, the Leafs.
This year could be a game-changer The new year could mean a new lifestyle for you. Embrace all that we have to offer – great food, great friends, superior services and the most beautiful buildings and suites in Collingwood.

My own best happy hours tend to involve a great cast of characters, with a glass of bourbon and a cigar to relax the mood. And it’s the Falstaff in all of us that inevitably leads to someone saying, “how about another … and maybe skip dinner?” Wishing everyone thousands of happy hours as we start our Roaring Twenties. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS Disasters and emergencies are unpredictable and can strike anywhere, anytime, and often with little warning. Our communities are susceptible to severe storms, flooding, winter blizzards, and tornadoes. Emergencies may affect large numbers of people and produce significant damage to your property and/or properties (homes and businesses, etc.) in your area. During times of emergency, there may be many people in need of assistance. It may take up to 72 hours for emergency services to reach you. This means that you have an important role to play in emergency preparedness. Learn how to be emergency ready, as well as what to do during and after an emergency.
BE PREPARED FOR UP TO 72 HOURS Four steps to be prepared: Know the risks Learn what hazards exist in your area such as: severe weather (thunderstorms, lightning, snowstorms, ice storms, tornadoes, extreme temperatures, floods, fires, etc.), major accidents (hazardous materials, explosions, transportation accidents, water contamination, etc.), technological failures (power failure, network interruptions, phone system failures, etc.), disease outbreaks (widespread health emergencies, human or animal borne diseases, pandemic influenza) and intentional acts (arson, crime, civil unrest). Make an Emergency Plan Disasters often cause confusion and distress. A household plan will help you cope with the stress of an emergency or disaster. Consider that your family may not be together when an emergency occurs and discuss what to do and where to go in the event of an emergency. Before starting, you will need to think about: • Safe exits from home, as well as the neighbourhood • Meeting places to reunite with family or roommates • Designated person to pick up children should you be unavailable. Remind children that if an emergency happens, someone will be there to help, such as: firefighters, police, teachers, neighbours, emergency workers • Contact persons close-by and out-of-town • Health and insurance information • Places for your pet to stay (pets are not allowed in some public shelters or hotels) • Location of your fire extinguisher, water valve, electrical panel, gas valve and floor drain, first aid and emergency kits Prepare/Purchase an Emergency Kit(s) In an emergency, you will need supplies. Be prepared to be self-sufficient (possibly without power)for at least 72 hours. You may have some of the items already, it is important that they are organized and easy to find. (see next page) Know what to do Learn how to protect your family, you and your home in specific emergencies. Take a first aid and CPR course. By administering immediate care during an emergency, you can help an ill or injured person before Emergency Medical Services arrive.

The most effective way for emergency services to communicate information about an emergency or disaster is through mass communication, including traditional means, like radio and television, and social media.

ARE YOU READY? The list below is a guidelines to help you put together the items you should have on hand and keep stored in a place that everyone in your family knows about. The kit should be stored in a way so that it can easily be carried with you in the event of an evacuation. Customize the contents of the kit to suit the specific needs of your family. Be sure to have at least one corded phone in your home, as most cordless phones will not work during a power outage.
EMERGENCY SURVIVAL KIT CHECKLIST: • Bottled water - 2L of water/person/day for drinking as well as 2L/person/day for food preparation and hygiene • Prescription medications (one week supply) • First-aid kit • Flashlight and batteries • Wind-up or battery-powered radio • Candles and waterproof matches/lighter • Extra car and house keys • Cash in the form of small bills and coins • Important family documents such as identification, insurance and bank records • Canned foods, energy bars, dried foods, baby formula (replace at least once per year) • Manual can opener, bottle opener • Cooking pot • Disposable cups and plates and cutlery • Garbage bags and smaller resealable bags • Change of clothing and footwear for each household member • Blankets and/or sleeping bags • Toilet paper and other personal items • Alcohol based hand sanitizer • Household chlorine bleach or water purifying tablets • Non-latex gloves, dust masks • Backpack/duffel bag • Whistle • Duct tape (to tape up windows, doors, air vents, etc.) • Basic tools - hammer, pliers, wrench, pocketknife, screwdrivers, etc. • Small fuel driven stove and fuel • Playing cards, games • Include any additional supplies to suit the needs of your family members.

BACK TO THE 80’S Oliver & Bonacini Blue Mountain held their totally gnarly 80’s Christmas party on December 8th at the Westin. Guests were dressed to excess with tank tops, parachute pants, big hair, shoulder pads, and far too much spandex! So glad we were there to capture all this fun with the photo booth! CANCER CHAT Happy New Year Georgian Life readers! As you likely know, the Terry Fox Foundation raises capital each year in support of Terry Fox’s dream to find a cure for cancer. In December, the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre hosted the 6th annual Ontario Node Symposium of the Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI). The meeting was organized by Dr. Robert Rottapel, the Ontario node leader and Donna DeFrancesco, the administrative coordinator. Dr. Rottapel proclaims, “It was a feast of Science!”
We have moved to Wasaga Beach
Darrell Fox, the younger brother of Terry Fox, was in attendance and, in what has become a tradition, was in the first to take the stage and open the talks. “Terry’s dream was that the Marathon of Hope would eventually enable a team of researchers to find a cure.” Darrell Fox is a member of the Terry Fox Foundation and serves as senior adviser of the TFRI. Remarking at the 700 plus in the audience, Darrell says, “Terry would be proud and smile.” In 1977, Terry Fox was diagnosed at the age of 18 with an osteosarcoma in his right leg. The night before his amputation, he read about an amputee runner and he began dreaming of running. While recovering from the surgery in which his leg was amputated, Terry decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. The idea behind the Marathon of Hope was officially born. Darrell Fox recalls that Terry always described the cause as “we” and never “I”. Terry ran close to a marathon a day, for 143 days from the shore of St John’s, Newfoundland through six provinces and was two-thirds of the way home. “I’m going to do my very best to make it… if I don’t, the Marathon of Hope better continue.” Osteosarcoma is the most common kind of bone cancer in children and teens often diagnosed under the age of 25. Osteosarcoma is most commonly found at the ends of long bones, where bone grows most quickly. Most tumors develop around the knee. Treatment usually involves chemotherapy and surgery. Patients with high grade osteosarcoma have a survival rate of about 70%. Osteosarcoma begins when bone cells start making new bone when it isn’t needed leading to a mass of poorly formed bone cells that have the potential to invade and destroy healthy tissue. The cause of osteosarcoma is unknown. The legacy of Terry Fox has grown over the past four decades with the global reach of the Terry Fox Foundation and the innovation of the TFRI. The nine provincial offices and six regional nodes serve to accelerate the adoption of precision medicine across Canada. The Ontario Node symposium in December was entitled, “Novel cancer targets and emerging therapies” and hosted distinguished speakers and attendees from Canada, Netherlands, China, Brazil and Sao Paulo. A 121 abstracts were presented which has doubled from the 60 presented in 2016. “Terry Fox would never have imagined the depth or deep mechanistic insight generated by the research that is being presented here today” says Dr. Rottapel. The TFRI functions as the research arm of The Terry Fox Foundation and seeks to improve patient outcome through supporting cancer research that will enable discoveries to translate quickly into practical solutions. Currently, 1,314 cancer research projects are funded in Canada by the foundation. TFRI collaborates with over 70 cancer hospitals and research organizations across Canada.

When asked about the Marathon of Hope, Terry Fox once said, “That’s the thing about cancer. I’m not the only one, it happens all the time to people. I’m not special. This just intensifies what I did. It gives it more meaning. It’ll inspire more people… I just wish people would realize that anything’s possible if you try.”

FEATURE PET: BENTLEY I’m Bentley and I am one seriously, seriously handsome 2 year old dude. I love the lady-humans around here and boy do they ever love me back! I’ll admit, I’m a little hesitant of the man-humans (and tiny humans) right now, but I’m making a lot of progress, so it shouldn’t be long before I’m a big ole wiggle bum for everyone I meet!

Then maybe once we get home from all this exercise, you’ll let me snuggle with you on the couch... or even better, your big human bed!!! Hehe I looooove the snuggles!

DID YOU KNOW THAT BLACK CATS still have the lowest adoption rate? Whether because of superstition, prejudice, or perhaps simply because they can be so easily overlooked when snuggled up in a dark bed or blanket, black cats are statistically less likely to be adopted than more brightly colored and uniquely marked felines. To help change this statistic, GTHS is holding their ‘BLACK IS BACK’ promotion again! Until January 31st, we will be highlighting our beautiful black cats and reducing their adoption fee from $100 to just $50! This $50 adoption fee includes their spay/neuter, up-to-date vaccinations, parasite treatment and microchip. We are hopeful that this month-long promotion will help find loving homes for these forgotten kitties! To view our black kitties who are waiting for their forever homes, visit www.gths.ca/animals-foradoption.
CHANGE LIVES BY BECOMING A PAW DONOR Over 1300 animals came through the doors of the Georgian Triangle Humane Society last year. By Joining our PAW Program (Pre-Authorized Withdrawal), your monthly commitment will ensure that homeless, injured or abused animals in the Georgian Triangle area have somewhere to go. For less than a dollar per day, YOU can make a significant impact in the life of an animal. You can play a vital role in their health and wellness, ensure that their final home is a forever one, and allow GTHS to provide ongoing educational animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.

TOP 5 EXERCISES TO AVOID INJURY It’s the start of a new year and many people are thinking about getting a Personal Trainer to get in shape. Before you jump into any program, here are the top 5 exercises to start things off right and avoid hurting yourself: 1. Lie on your back with one hand under your lower back and one on your abdomen. Take a breath in with your abdomen and while you breathe out, slowly tighten your abdomen and lower back, but DON’T FLATTEN your lower back. Hold for 8-10 seconds. Repeat 10-12 times. For more of a challenge, lift one leg off the table. 2. Lie on your back with one hand under your lower back and cross one leg over the other, resting your ankle on the opposite thigh. Hold your ankle with your hand. Lift your opposite leg off the table and hold the stretch in your hip for 3-4 seconds while tightening your abdomen and lower back. Repeat 10-12 times each side. 3. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and arms up facing forward. “Sit back” or squat using your hips NOT your knees. Keep your chest and upper body upright. Hold at the bottom for 3-4 seconds. Return to neutral. Repeat 10-12 times. 4. Stand facing a wall with your forearms against the wall and your thumbs facing backwards. Hold a small band tightly between each hand. Turn your hands outwards and hold for 3-4 seconds. Return to neutral. Repeat 10-12 times. 5. Resting on your knees and hands, raise one arm and place your hand behind your neck with your elbow facing out. Keep your lower back tight and push your shoulder blades down. Slowly rotate your elbow toward the ceiling while keeping your hand on the back of your neck. Hold for 3-4 seconds. Return to neutral. Repeat 10-12 times each side. Do these exercises prior to every session to properly prepare yourself and avoid injuries. SIMPLIFY YOUR VEHICLE SEARCH WITH THESE USEFUL BUYING TIPS When you’re in the market for a new car, the search can be overwhelming and the options endless. So, where do you start? If you’re comparing new and lightly used vehicles, pricing tools like those available on Autotrader.ca can help narrow down the search by scanning hundreds of thousands of listings in real time to let you know if a vehicle’s price is great, good or fair.
Automobile Farm Home Commercial Boat 1071 County Road #42 Stayner, ON T: (705) 428-3138 • F: (705) 428-0397 info@spriggs.ca • www.spriggs.ca
“The price of a vehicle is usually the first thing people look at when looking to buy,” says Michael Bettencourt, managing editor of Autotrader.ca. “But the price tag doesn’t tell you the whole story. Buyers need to take into account the total cost of ownership.” New and used cars offer different price breaks. With new vehicles, you’ll have the added security of predictable monthly payments with traditionally lower interest rates. Repairs will also be covered under warranty, saving you additional dollars down the road. On the other hand, buying used gives you access to savings up front, since depreciation has already been covered by a previous owner. You also won’t have to worry about new-car fees. Ultimately, consumers should look at their budget and lifestyle to decide whether a new or used vehicle is right for them. You’ll also need to determine if financing or leasing is your best option. Financing spreads the cost of a vehicle over a period of time until the vehicle is owned outright, but usually these payments are higher than typical leasing payments. On the flip side, leasing is a great option for those who want the flexibility to trade in every few years and want to enjoy the latest vehicle designs and technology. But be aware, you’ll also be responsible for excessive mileage and any damage that may occur. To ensure you make the best decision for your driving needs and get a great deal on your new ride, make sure to do your research and explore a variety of vehicles and pricing options. www.newscanada.com

GETTING MUGGED The Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce hosted their annual Chamber Social on November 28th. It was an evening to remember. After a light dinner, members began their annual holiday ritual… names were drawn for the person to receive one of the holiday mugs brought by attendees. If the person received an amazing looking mug, another person was allowed to hijack that mug. It was a evening of fun and fellowship. Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography. Sighting their value to the Collingwood brand, Chair of the Collingwood Terminals & Harbour Action Group said; “Our volunteers blanketed the community with our Peoples Petition. Enthusiasm for retaining and preserving the Collingwood (grain) Terminals is high as our eight thousand signatures confirm. We urge Town Council to use some of the money generated from the sale of Collus, Rail Line & Airport - $18 million, to invest in this important Terminals & Harbour rehabilitation project” said Bing Jowett. The Town of Collingwood bought the grain Terminals from the Hamilton Brothers (Frank and Fred Hamilton) Flour Mill people of Glen Huron fame in 1997. Marianne Dynes (niece of Frank Hamilton), said that her uncle Frank was motivated to sell to the Town because they represented the best opportunity to continue this significant historic landmark. Marianne has fond memories of her uncle taking her on tour of the elevators. It’s one of the motivations for her being part of the Action Group. Check out the Council YouTube website to view our comprehensive presentation to the October 31st Strategic Initiatives Committee/Council meeting. Included in part from the Collingwood Architectural Conservancy is; “The Collingwood grain elevators serve as a cultural icon. They represent an important part of Collingwood’s history. The Terminals remind us of a time when Great Lakes ships docked in our harbour. They remind us of the contribution of many shipyard workers. They contribute to giving us a sense of place in our community. Every effort should be made to make the necessary repairs to prevent further deterioration while awaiting partnerships to develop adaptive reuse to this historical (Brand) structure.“ Submitted by: George E. GTHS HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE It was another jam-packed evening at the 2019 GTHS Holiday Open House. The turnout was fantastic; adults and children lined the hallways, many with arms full of in-kind donations. Children gathered ’round the craft station to create some beautiful works of art, the cats in the main cat room were ‘feline’ extra special with all of the attention they were receiving and over in the conference room guests dipped into the tasty treats and indulged in local wine, and facility tours were taking place with the new Animal Hospital (opened in April) being the highlight!
