A great way to get into the holiday spirit

RBC Dominion Securities Inc.

Start 2022 with financial confidence

The Collingwood BIA brought a little night-time magic to downtown with a holiday spirit-filled Christmas Market on Fridays in December. The streets were lit up with colourful light installations, local vendors, and extended store hours. Strolling entertainment from hula hoopers to stilt walkers and jugglers wowed the crowds. And yes, the big guy in red - Santa came back in his red sleigh to rescue his reindeer-in-training and say hello to all the boys and girls before starting his journey.

A year after first meeting Chloe, Jay George (Jason George Photography) decided to run a fundraiser for his new friend in Wasaga Beach to help get a robotic arm, to help feed herself when and what she wants. On November 3rd, Jay shared his idea to fundraise for this arm, and they supported him. In only 36 hours, his wonderful community had raised $8,100! Ted Yoannou: In Your Corner I Hereby Resolve... I’ve always been a “resolutions” guy. Over 50% of us make New Year’s Resolutions each year, and over 50% of us fail to achieve them. That’s me, year after year, guilty of all charges, Your Honour. Not surprisingly, I can’t speak Spanish, have yet to learn to play the piano, and there’s still no novel with my name on it. Oh, and I still weigh the same as last year. My most humiliating failure was January 1, 1995. Armed with a fresh set of lofty resolutions to start the new year, I awoke in the late morning, foggy-headed and bleary-eyed from the previous night’s carousing. A good buddy dropped by, and we watched three football games that day, from about noon to midnight. We ordered pizza three times, before the kickoff of each game. Stayed in my boxer shorts and bathrobe all day, drank beer, ate pizza and watched football. Pretty much failed all my resolutions by the end of that night. But you can’t blame a guy for trying. Martin Luther King wrote, “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice,” telling us that positive change takes a long time, but it does happen.

Wishing Everyone a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year 2022!

WE INSPECT:

CENTURY HOMES • RESIDENTIAL HOMES • LOG HOMES COTTAGES & VACATION PROPERTIES • WOOD BURNING APPLIANCES NEW CONSTRUCTION • RURAL & FARM PROPERTIES • CONDOMINIUMS COMMERCIAL & INDUSTRIAL PROPERTIES

This reminds me of a recent exchange with another good friend, a social warrior without a peer. We were going to get together for a holiday drink, but the plans fell through. So I suggested we each stay home and just solve the world’s problems instead. She replied, “that’s easy. Smash the patriarchy. Decolonize. Discipline capitalism.”

Owen Sound, Meaford, Thornbury, Collingwood, Grey Highlands, Wasaga Beach, Stayner, Tiny and Surrounding Areas

Geez. It was embarrassing to reply, as I was only thinking of ways to make the awful Toronto Pearson Airport experience more “consumer-friendly.”

705-888-6449

The history of New Year’s Resolutions goes back 4,000 years to the ancient Babylonians. They pledged to pay their debts and return any objects they had borrowed. According to History.com, if they kept their word, “the gods would bestow favour on them for the coming year; if not, they would fall out of the gods’ favour – a place no one wanted to be.” Wow, talk about a lot riding on your resolutions.

brickhousehis@rogers.com | www.brickhousehis.com

Our resolutions are less society-oriented and more directed to self-improvement in more recent times. The most common ones include: • Exercise more / lose weight • Learn a new skill • Quit smoking or drinking • Travel more / read more • Spend more time with family and friends • Save money / spend less Perhaps the high failure rate of our resolutions over the years is just due to our innate nature. We are aiming high and falling short. We mean well, but we often screw up. We’re not that capable; we’re only human. Two icons from the 1980s are Springsteen and Mellencamp. Their concerts were legendary for their boundless energy, Springsteen’s being marathons close to four hours long and Mellencamp’s being a couple of hours of full out sprints. Today they are a couple of relatively old guys, but still making good music, recently collaborating on a song called “Wasted Days”:

How many summers still remain? How many days are lost in vain?

GENERAL CONTRACTORS • RENOVATIONS • HOME IMPROVEMENT

Who’s counting out these last remaining years? How many minutes do we have here? Maybe just one resolution this year: Don’t Waste the Days. Except, of course, if friends are coming over to watch sports.

A NEW YEAR AND A NEW START This time of year, people often re-examine their lives—reflect over the last year’s challenges and achievements and set new goals for the coming one. This past year has continued to be a challenging one globally. Everyone has become tired of the Covid rollercoaster. As a result, many are redefining priorities and changing their habits to adapt to our current situation. New Year’s goals often involve plans for lifestyle and health improvements. Despite their reputation as fattening foods, pasta and sauce have many health benefits, including low glycemic index (GI) - digesting slower and keeping one feeling full longer. Fresh milled sauce is also an excellent source of vitamins and minerals and a powerful antioxidant. Both those who have made new fitness goals and veteran athletes should be aware that pasta is one of the best sports nutrition fuels available being rich in complex carbohydrates. These carbs are the first source of energy used by muscles to refuel. This fact, combined with the fact that pasta is low on the GI, makes it a readily available energy source. Before hitting the slopes or trails, many skiers and outdoor enthusiasts choose to fuel up with pasta. Others prefer a pasta meal, post-exercise, to feed and replenish the body. Pasta helps revitalize the body’s glycogen, which is depleted after a vigorous workout. This is especially true with endurance sports, such as cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Pre-exercise benefits include having the carbs available for short-term energy and protein to draw upon as a backup.

Let’s get

Saucy! PASTAS

Over 30 varieties of fresh pasta shapes and flavour infusions are made fresh daily, ranging from traditional to unique and novel. An incredible array of infused pasta such as Fresh Herb & Garlic, Spinach, Lemon Peppercorn, Sundried Tomato, and more exotic varieties like Squid Ink, Lemon & Sage, Porcini Mushroom, and Wild Leek infused. The selection changes daily, as do the daily specials.

SAUCES

A dozen different sauces are prepared using premium San Marzano tomatoes slow-cooked with fresh herbs and produce. Meat sauces use premium, local, naturally raised meats and premium fresh seafood. Many varieties of sauces are available: Vegetarian, Rosé, Beef Bolognese, Chicken Breast Cacciatore, Fire Roasted Red Pepper, Roasted Red Pepper Rose, Tracy’s Arrabbiata, Puttanesca, Caper & Kalamata, and Heretic Spirits a la Vodka - as well as Alfredo and Pesto, three vegan and eight vegetarian options - all gluten-free.

For optimal glycogen synthesis, a carb to protein ratio of 3:1 is recommended. For example, adding a Beef or Meat Alternative Bolognese or Chicken Breast Cacciatore sauce to fresh pasta would be a perfect pre-workout or post-workout. Using whole-grain pasta adds fibre to the mix - for extra health and digestive benefit. In addition, because the complex carbohydrates in pasta release energy at a steady and sustained pace, one avoids the energy spikes of simple carbohydrates allowing improved endurance and performance. In conclusion, pasta is an excellent outdoor fuel for enjoying casual and competitive outdoor activities. Their low glycemic index properties allow them to digest slowly, keeping one full longer (and hungry, less) and offering consistent energy storage to enable peak performance.

A thank you to all who donated to our successful Food Bank and Toy Drives.

MEALS

Freshly prepared meals like ravioli, cannelloni, and four varieties of lasagna made daily: Vegetarian, Fire Roasted Red Pepper, Beef Bolognese, and Chicken Breast Cacciatore. Fresh, frozen, and gluten-free are available. If you prefer to make your own lasagna, fresh lasagna sheets are available.

AND MORE

Other specialties include in-house fresh baked daily demi-baguettes and Rosemary Foccacia, made-from-scratch Tiramisu, Fresh Lobster and Ricotta Cannelloni, Jumbo Stuffed Spinach & Ricotta or Beef Stuffed Shells, Lemon Biscotti, Fresh Shaved Parmesan Reggiano, Brie/Walnut/Pear Ravioli and much, much more. Selections change daily.

We appreciate your commitment to our community. Looking forward to serving your favourites and lots of new treats in the coming year. CRANBERRY MEWS 10 Keith Ave. Unit 205 Collingwood

OUR FOCUS ON THE CUSTOMER As an auto mechanic my job is to fix cars. Sounds like a simple equation but the business is so much more complicated than it appears on the surface. To be a truly successful auto shop you have to do a lot more than making sure the vehicle leaves in good condition. You have to make sure the customer leaves in good condition as well! It all revolves around meeting, and hopefully exceeding expectations. So, what do our clients expect when they bring in their prized possession? They expect to be treated honestly. The estimated cost and time to complete the repair has to be as accurate as humanly possible to allow them to make an educated decision. There are so many things that can affect the accuracy of an estimate, such as the availability of parts (especially these days), or hidden problems like rusty bolts or broken components that are not visible until the car is up in the air. Sometimes we need to have a closer look at the car before we can give an accurate estimate. We never sell the customer work they don’t need, but we owe it to them to be honest if there are issues that we find, especially if they are safety related. We always let the customer make the decision. They expect to be treated fairly. In my thirty-five years as a mechanic, I can tell you the worst feeling a customer can leave with is thinking they have been “ripped off”. Car repairs are not cheap, and nobody wakes up in the morning expecting their vehicle to break down, and they might not have the money set aside, but it happens. They arrive thinking you will sell them something they don’t need and charge them an arm and a leg for it. The key is to introduce the customer to the mechanic especially on complex jobs and take them out to their vehicle to show them the situation first hand. Like the old game of “telephone” sometimes information gets lost between the customer, the front counter and the technicians. We try to take the customer’s personal situation into account. Some people want to use the most expensive parts and others want to do the repair on a budget. Again, we’re looking after more than just the car here. Communications is the key to fairness. Keep everybody in the loop. Give them the good news with the not-so-good news and show them what’s going on all the way through the process. They expect to be treated with respect. There is wide range of knowledge when it comes to the complexities of the modern-day car or truck. There are more lines of software code in an F-150 today than there were in the space shuttle (no really!), so getting all the detail you need to complete the job becomes an exercise in diplomacy. Again, it is sometimes better to talk to the customer with the car in the same room and the situation becomes instantly clear without requiring an in-depth knowledge of all the bits and pieces. The “Golden Rule” is a mainstay of our business. They expect you to do exactly as promised. The price of the repair, the time it takes to complete and top-quality parts and workmanship are all reasonable expectations when a client hands you their keys. As a business we have to help set those expectations by being up front with the things we believe need to be done to a vehicle and outline the possible “What-ifs.” We need to provide an accurate time estimate, again with an honest list of possible extenuating circumstances, and we need most of all to fix the car right, the first time, or stand behind our work if it doesn’t meet expectations. If the parts arrive on time, and complications do not arise, it's easy to be a great mechanic. It takes a lot more finesse to have the customer leaving in perfect condition as well.

A QUICK COURSE IN CANNABIS Cannabis stores are popping up everywhere, and so are the available products leaving customers with a lot to learn. Here are a few quick pointers to help you navigate the modern cannabis market: The Basics: THC vs CBD There are over 100 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, but the most common and sought-after are, of course, THC and CBD. THC and CBD affect the brain and body differently. While THC curates psychoactive effects (it’s responsible for the feeling of being “high”), CBD is a little more docile with only a soothing or calming bodily response. Each cannabis product will have a specific ratio of THC to CBD. CONSUMPTION METHODS: For new consumers, it’s imperative to find a method of consumption that fits your lifestyle. For experienced users, it can be fun to switch up your routine and try a new method! Smoking is the most popular method of consumption. When you inhale smoke from the cannabis flower, effects are felt quickly and linger for up to eight hours. Vaporizers are rising in popularity because the effects are similar to smoking, but instead of using combustion, heat at a lower temperature is used to vaporize the active compounds (cannabinoids and terpenes).

Cannabis doesn’t have to be consumed internally; it can be absorbed for a localized effect. Topicals offer no cerebral or psychoactive effects, which means they are ideal for those looking for effects on a specific part of the body. They can include cannabis-infused lotions, salves, balms and oils. Learn the Labels Health Canada regulates the packaging and labelling requirements of cannabis products quite strictly to help keep consumers safe and aware of what they’re purchasing. Key label features to look at are strain and weight (what’s in it and how much), THC and CBD, Total THC and Total CBD (the potency once it’s been heated and/or cured), who made it and the best before date, along with health warnings/disclaimers. Find a Knowledgeable Bud These are good pointers for consumers to consider, but your best resource is a Budtender at your local shop. As subject-matter experts, Budtenders can answer your specific questions, show you the products you might be interested in, and help ensure you get the best value.

Edibles have a whole array of options now, from gummies, brownies, cookies and lollipops to all different kinds of beverages. The effects of edibles are slower, but they provide a tasty and less-harsh alternative.

For more information and to discover what’s new in cannabis, visit Sessions Wasaga at 3 Market Lane, across from Walmart Supercentre. Phone: 705-352-7374 Find out what’s in store at www.sessions.ca.

Tinctures and gels are cannabis extracts that are placed under the tongue or ingested. They allow discrete and precise dosage control while being faster-acting than edibles.

Disasters and emergencies are unpredictable and can strike anywhere, anytime, and often with little warning. Our communities are susceptible to severe storms, flooding, winter blizzards, and tornadoes. Emergencies may affect large numbers of people and produce significant damage to your property and/ or properties (homes and businesses, etc.) in your area. During times of emergency, there may be many people in need of assistance. It may take up to 72 hours for emergency services to reach you. This means that you have an important role to play in emergency preparedness. Learn how to be emergency ready, as well as what to do during and after an emergency.

BE PREPARED FOR UP TO 72 HOURS Four steps to be prepared: Specialty cleaners of rugs and upholstery

705-444-4737 wiley1@rogers.com

Know the risks Learn what hazards exist in your area such as: severe weather (thunderstorms, lightning, snowstorms, ice storms, tornadoes, extreme temperatures, floods, fires, etc.), major accidents (hazardous materials, explosions, transportation accidents, water contamination, etc.), technological failures (power failure, network interruptions, phone system failures, etc.), disease outbreaks (widespread health emergencies, human or animal borne diseases, pandemic influenza) and intentional acts (arson, crime, civil unrest).

Make an Emergency Plan Disasters often cause confusion and distress. A household plan will help you cope with the stress of an emergency or disaster. Consider that your family may not be together when an emergency occurs and discuss what to do and where to go in the event of an emergency. Before starting, you will need to think about: • Safe exits from home, as well as the neighbourhood • Meeting places to reunite with family or roommates • Designated person to pick up children should you be unavailable. Remind children that if an emergency happens, someone will be there to help, such as: firefighters, police, teachers, neighbours, emergency workers • Contact persons close-by and out-of-town • Health and insurance information • Places for your pet to stay (pets are not allowed in some public shelters or hotels) • Location of your fire extinguisher, water valve, electrical panel, gas valve and floor drain, first aid and emergency kits

Prepare/Purchase an Emergency Kit(s) In an emergency, you will need supplies. Be prepared to be self-sufficient (possibly without power)for at least 72 hours. You may have some of the items already, it is important that they are organized and easy to find. (see next page)

Know what to do Learn how to protect your family, you and your home in specific emergencies. Take a first aid and CPR course. By administering immediate care during an emergency, you can help an ill or injured person before Emergency Medical Services arrive.

EMERGENCY ALERTS:

The most effective way for emergency services to communicate information about an emergency or disaster is through mass communication, including traditional means, like radio and television, and social media.

Paxton is a big boy (25lbs) who is looking for a new home. His previous owners describe him as a nice, sweet, big ole couch potato. He has a lovely personality and he has a lot of love to give! With his weight, it’s best that Paxton is with someone who can help him get to a healthier weight. It’s also best that he be in a home environment without small children as he doesn’t have experience with kids and he can be a bit shy. Interested in adopting Paxton? “We rely on the Coldest Night of the Year as our biggest fundraiser.” The goal this year is to raise $125,000 in support of the local youth program and to offer the option for an in-person and virtual event. Homelessness comes at a cost to both the individual, the family, and the community and Home Horizon has seen a dramatic increase in the need for their support and programming due to the pandemic. “Home Horizon’s social return on investment is multifaceted." Says Executive Director Steven Pelletier. “not only are we ensuring the health and wellbeing of youth today, we are also making a significant investment in our community’s future.” Home Horizon targets youth experiencing homelessness in the Southern Georgian Bay area. The Barbara Weider House, their transitional housing program, is staffed 24

hours a day and currently has capacity for seven youth to live in the house and is expanding to ten in the new year. Their “Your S.A.F.E.” youth outreach program, helps connect youth with other housing service organizations in our community. They work with youth facing complex and challenging barriers including poverty, mental health and addictions, sex trafficking, racism, trauma and conflictual home lives. Since the launch in 2020, they have served 127 youth, with over 1,085 services interactions.

Since 2017 Home Horizon has helped over 100 youth:

LIVING LIKE PEOPLE AND THE PLANET MATTER In the last article, I discussed an innovative approach that Foxpark Development Corporation’s President, Carl Strand, has taken to reduce overall home building costs, without sacrificing quality, as one arm of his multi-armed strategy to make retirement living more affordable. Today, I will investigate the second arm of that strategy – Strand’s unique Life Lease Contract as compared to renting a unit of the same size. Despite a rent freeze during the pandemic and this year’s smaller increase of 1.2% , rent continues upward and will, no doubt, quickly return to inflation levels. In 25 years the equivalent $1900/month rental townhome would rise to $4,000 or more per month, not including utilities. With Strand’s Life Lease contract, you pay as little as a $100,000 deposit, now, to guarantee a FIXED monthly lease payment in a brand new seniors’ townhome, valued at $445,000, and your deposit is repaid with interest or profit, whenever you decide to exit. In the meantime, you enjoy secure accommodation in a townhome community with essential home amenities, front door parking, walk-in storage, ground-floor patio, solar power and stakeholder pride. Using the example of a $100,000 principal deposit, your monthly lease amount is $1,350.00 and there is a $375 monthly maintenance fee to cover property tax and year-round upkeep of the site exterior. That starts your monthly payments at $1,725 to live in a brand new townhome. Placing a higher deposit results in an even lower monthly lease fee and greater potential return, upon exit. The only cost increase with the Life Lease is the maintenance fee. In 25 years that $375 could rise to $615 at 2% increase per year. As the monthly Life Lease payment, in our example, stays at $1,350 / month for the life of the building, the monthly cost in 25 years would be about $1,965 / month which becomes very attractive, by comparison, to successive Leaseholders who will pay a premium price to purchase your Life Lease contract and take over your unit. Not only is your original deposit returned, but you keep whatever the incoming Leaseholder pays above your own deposit. Check with your own financial adviser, as being a “beneficial owner” could mean

you are exempt from CRA tax on those profits. This, in turn, helps stretch your retirement budget over a longer life span, as many Seniors are now experiencing. Your money is not thrown into a bottomless pit, as in the case of a pure rental unit, and your monthly savings really add up. You get additional bragging rights with net-metered, roof-top solar that banks your solar power production in the sunny months of spring, summer and autumn to use during less sunny winter months. Your year-round climate control and most other electrical needs are covered, greatly reducing operating costs. For those who wish to achieve a $0 monthly Lease, there is an option to purchase your Life Lease, outright, giving the Leaseholder full control over reselling their unit, at anytime after placing their refundable $10,000 reservation fee when building permits are available. The Purchaser, by paying the full amount up front, will be given two choices subject to final lease documents – 1. The right to accept guaranteed interest earned, over the time they live in the unit, or; 2. The right to sell their own Life Lease Option for a, possibly, larger return on this purchase. In either case, the return of your full deposit, upon exit, is guaranteed. For a limited time only, Foxpark Development Corporation is having an OffPlan Special giving 10% off the $445,000 selling price. Cash buyers can purchase their Life Lease Option for $400,500. Here’s how: • We’ll pick up your old kitchen for free (and you’ll receive a charitable receipt!) • We’ll take your gently used furniture and household items and give them a new life. • We’ll tale your Electronic Waste (keep them out of a landfill) • We’ll take your excess or discontinued store inventory (plus, your donation shows your customers that you care about the environment and your community.)

Be amazed by the selection of furniture, decor, appliances and more at Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

Your ReStore purchase builds the story of home: Every purchase offers new opportunity. Certain hazards come with getting behind the wheel, though most are largely preventable - including drowsy driving. As more people take to the roadways this spring and summer, it is essential to remember that drowsy driving is a significant problem. In the United States, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that as many as 6,000 fatal crashes each year may be attributed to drowsy drivers. The National Sleep Foundation found about half of adult drivers admit to consistently getting behind the wheel while feeling drowsy. In addition, more than 40 percent of survey respondents say they have fallen asleep behind the wheel at least once.

Oil Change | Tires 590 River Road West, Wasaga Beach, ON 705-429-6907

The impact of drowsiness on driving is just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated, distracted, or under the influence of both legal and illegal drugs. • Reaction times are significantly reduced and worsen the drowsier the driver becomes. • Awareness of hazards and the ability to sustain attention are diminished.

• Driving after being awake more than 20 hours without sleep is the equivalent of driving with a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent. • The National Safety Council warns that fatigued drivers are three more times more likely to be in a car crash than drivers who are not fatigued. • Insufficient sleep is tied to poor decision-making, which can lead to risk-taking behind the wheel. Some drivers may not recognize they are driving while drowsy. Drivers with certain sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea, may not recognize that their interrupted, less restorative sleep can adversely affect their safety behind the wheel. Addressing sleep disorders can help drivers be more safe. Other people may be sleep deprived from working shift hours or taking care of young children. Asking for help to catch up on sleep can alleviate drowsiness when behind the wheel. Individuals can take additional steps to make them less susceptible to drowsy driving: • Avoid driving between midnight and 6 a.m. or in the mid-afternoon when sleepiness peaks, according to the Sleep Foundation.

• Ask to change medications if they cause drowsiness. Check to see if supplements list drowsiness as reactions and avoid those that do. • Take breaks when driving long distances. Travel with a driving partner who can share the responsibility of driving. Drowsy driving is a problem that can be prevented. But, drivers must first recognize the threat that drowsy driving can pose.

Charge up your car battery knowledge Vehicles consist of many essential components to keep them running efficiently and effectively. Car and truck owners should have an understanding of how their vehicles function so they can diagnose and address problems as they arise. Car batteries are an important component of any vehicle. Even though engines are the powerhouse of any car or truck, without a battery, the engine wouldn’t be able to work. Car batteries work by providing a jolt of electricity necessary to power all the electrical components of the vehicle. This is achieved through a chemical reaction that changes chemical energy into the electrical energy needed to deliver voltage to the starter. In addition to initially starting the car, the battery also keeps electric current steady to keep the engine running.

UP HERE IT’S NOT JUST A JEEP

IT’S A LIFESTYLE

Check out current incentives and inventory at:

bluemountainchrysler.com

The battery also works in conjunction with the alternator to power the electronics in the car, according to the automotive information blog Autosessive. While the car is running, the alternator reverses the current produced by the battery, recharging it as a result. This happens during long journeys, so people who drive for short bursts of time may find that their batteries will not have a chance to recharge and may not have the longevity desired. 705-445-2740 | bluemountainchrysler.com 9950 Hwy 26 E, Collingwood, ON Follow our journey:

PLEASE DON’T TEXT & DRIVE Because it only takes a second to change a life forever… There is quite literally a lot riding on a functioning battery. No one wants to be caught stranded by a dead battery, so drivers may wonder if there are any indicators that may signal the battery needs replacement.

Protect your own life and the lives of others by making a pledge to never text or talk on the phone while driving. If you are in the car with a distracted driver, let them know it bothers you and ask them to drive phone-free. A message from your friends at Georgian Life Media Inc.

Slow turnover: If a vehicle does not immediately start or if the cranking is sluggish and takes longer to start, it may mean the battery is starting to fail. Frequent, short trips: Drivers who make frequent, short trips may find their car batteries do not have time to fully recharge. This, coupled with overtaxing thanks to a lot of accessory use, may cause the battery and the alternator to have shortened life spans. Low battery fluid levels: If the fluid level is below the energy conductor inside, it is often indicative of overcharging and excessive heat. Corrosion: Corrosion buildup, dust, dirt, and grime on battery connections may cause performance problems. Inspecting and cleaning the terminals can prolong the battery life.

Elmvale’s Trusted Auto Repair Shop for Four Decades

Odours and leaks: Battery leaks can produce a sulfur odor similar to the smell of a rotten egg. This can become problematic over time, and leaks may indicate an aging or damaged battery. Age: Most batteries have a finite life span. A well-maintained battery can last up to five years. Neglect can reduce that life expectancy considerably. Bloated or cracked battery case: Replace the battery immediately if the case is cracking, as it could be because excessive heat is swelling the battery. Understanding how car batteries work can help drivers keep their cars running smoothly.

Pocketful of sunshine

A historial book launch

Local illustrator and surface pattern designer Loo McNulty is officially spreading joy across the country with the launch of her purpose-driven stationery brand Happy Just Happy. Ever since her early days of doodling in her school notebooks, McNulty has wanted to make patterns and illustrations. Driven by a love of creating art that makes people happy, McNulty focuses on things that make her smile - nature, quirky animals, unusual pairings and found objects. She mostly likes to draw because it makes her feel happy, just happy - and that’s how she hopes you feel when you experience her art.

A new local book co-published by Rina Barone, Anke and Rick Lex was launched at The Simcoe Street Theatre in Collingwood on December 2nd. ‘Tremont Studios: Art and History’ pays tribute to the heritage building and the talented artists who create within its walls. The 128-page book is a beautiful, colourful journey that chronicles the history of the Tremont House as a former railway hotel built in 1889 to its present-day restoration as an artistic hub home to twelve local artists. The book is available at Curiosity House Books in Creemore and Simcoe Street Books in Collingwood. PHOTOS | STORY: BRYAN DAVIES PHOTOGRAPHY

Inspired by her own journey with recovery, McNulty is on a mission to create shareable art that is a path to healing, happiness and positive social change - all while raising funds and awareness for Jack.org, a Canadawide charity with the goal of revolutionizing youth mental health. As the need for youth mental health support surges, 10% of all Happy Just Happy proceeds will be donated directly to Jack.org to further encourage and empower youth to reach out, talk and seek the support they need. With a dreamy combination of cheerful colour palettes, whimsical illustrations and a touch of lighthearted nostalgia, Happy Just Happy launches with a range of unique greeting cards designed as mood-boosting messages. The bold, uplifting illustrations are especially timely after so many months of difficulty and uncertainty through the COVID-19 pandemic. “When it rains, I draw the sunshine back in!” notes McNulty. “My goal is to celebrate the emotional power of colour and inspire a renewed sense of optimism and playfulness to connect people. Art can be such a powerful tool to finding the miraculous moments in life, and stationery in particular reminds us that we’re not alone. When we reach out to someone to let them know we are thinking of them, we create pathways that form community and caring.” With the challenges of the past 21 months and the corresponding effects of social isolation, anxiety and uncertainty, the team at Jack. org is working harder than ever to advocate for better access to mental health supports, improved systems, increased education and the eradication of mental health stigma. Happy Just Happy stationery is now available at happyjusthappy.com with shipping available across Canada and the United States and will be rolling out across select Canadian retailers in the coming months. MERLE NORMAN COSMETICS AND DAY SPA In the 1930s, kitchens were the place for making baked goods and pot roasts, but Merle Norman preferred to whip up cosmetics in hers. The resulting “3 Steps to Beauty” regime would become a springboard to the nowfamous cosmetics empire that pioneered the “try before you buy” model. The Merle Norman Cosmetics Company, 90 years old this year, continued to flourish under the guidance of Ms. Norman’s entrepreneurial spirit until she passed in 1972. Brenda Bullions, a long-time fan of the iconic brand and now the owner of Merle Norman Cosmetics and Day Spa at the Stonebridge Town Centre in Wasaga Beach is one of the entrepreneurs that have continued her legacy. In total, there are around 1,100 Merle Norman franchises operating in the U.S. and another 100+ here in Canada. Born in Halifax, NS, into the family of a naval officer, Brenda called Wasaga Beach home from 2004 to 2014. She was a stay-at-home mom (working evenings) until 2008, when she enrolled in an aesthetics program and subsequently found employment in several spas in the Collingwood area. Brenda and her husband moved to the West Coast in 2014, where she worked as a Merle Norman consultant for several years.

a constant presence supporting community events and initiatives like the Wasaga Beach Food Bank and Home Horizon Transitional Support Program. Rich Halliday, a makeup artist and master hairstylist who’s been a bright light in the beauty industry for more than 40 years, stopped by to introduce himself just before the spas’ opening - the beginning of a friendship and partnership that is still going strong. His fun, vibrant personality and incomparable expertise are always in demand, and both personalized lessons and wedding party makeup sessions can be reserved on select days. The spa offers laser hair removal, skin rejuvenation, pigment/lesions and acne treatments. Hydrafacials, facials, sugaring, professional make up applications, make up lessons and express facials. They also offer foundation matching and skin consultations. The studio carries a full line of prestige make-up and skincare products at a reasonable price. This January and February, the spa will be holding “Sip and Paint Your Face” evenings - the perfect excuse for groups of up to ten ladies to have a little fun and sip a few drinks while learning some invaluable tricks of the trade.

Back in Ontario, six years later, Brenda was ready when the stars aligned in May of 2021 with the opportunity to become the owner of her very own Merle Norman Cosmetics franchise - an offer she happily jumped at. Since then, the spa’s services and clientelle have grown steadily. There are now three estheticians offering laser hair removal and other laser-based services as well as skin rejuvenation treatments, express facials, makeup lessons, and, of course, Merle Norman’s famous makeovers! The spa is also

Cancer Chat

The Georgian Good Food Box is a non profit buying club that purchases fresh fruits and vegetables for monthly distribution throughout South Georgian Bay The cost is $18 for anyone who is interested. GGFB is volunteer driven.

Happy New Year, Georgian Life readers! Nurses and medical practitioners, depicted as capewearing superheroes for their pandemic efforts, display an unparalleled commitment, shelving personal lives to ensure the health and well-being of our family and friends. Nurses like Shelley Westergard, clinical coordinator and nurse navigator for the high-risk Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) at the Princess Margaret Cancer Center (PMCC), are instrumental to the success of programs aimed to triage cancer patients through genetic screening, diagnostics and treatment trajectory. There are 30 highrisk OBSP screening locations across Ontario.

The high-risk OBSP is specific for women aged 30-69, and a referral to the program is required. In addition, to be eligible for direct entry into the program, the women must meet at least one of the following under Category A including: 1) be a carrier of a gene mutation with increased cancer risk (for example, BRCA1 or BRCA2)

glass sales and installation glass railings & showers metal railings and stairs welding and machining stainless steel • general repair transportation

2) have a first-degree relative who is a carrier of a gene mutation 3) previously assessed by a genetic clinic as having >25% lifetime risk of breast cancer based on family history, or 4) received chest radiation (not chest x-ray) as part of treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Wilm’s tumor, or neuroblastoma before age 30. A genetic assessment consisting of counselling and/or testing is required to determine eligibility for those who meet criteria under Category B, including:

R.R.2 165 Lakeshore Dr., Clarksburg, ON 519-599-7647 | @IG.TEMP.GLASS.METAL.CNC

1) have a first-degree relative of a carrier of a gene mutation with no previous genetic counselling or testing 2) have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer suggestive of a hereditary cancer syndrome, or 3) h ave breast or ovarian cancer in those of Ashkenazi Jewish descent. Shelley’s role includes triaging and consulting with referring physicians, conducting new patient consultations, educating patients about the program, analyzing diagnostic imaging results, biopsies, and other breast treatments, and providing psychosocial support. Shelley enjoys educating her patients with the findings. “I like to bring them down to a level to feel empowered about their choices. If we find something in its early stage, intervention is less invasive.” Shelley helps patients gain the necessary knowledge and access to educational resources relating to their diagnosis. “Full education is essential, don’t rely on Google!” Shelley works collaboratively with a diverse oncology health care team of specialists, including the psychosocial department, to facilitate necessary care. “Psychosocial support is an integral part of navigation. While the screening program is instrumental in identifying early breast cancer changes, it can be anxiety-provoking.” Anxiety stems from being identified at higher risk, fear of possible or actual cancer diagnosis, decision-making to promote health and well-being, and cancer prevention. “I really want to support my patients and provide tools and strategies that help empower them through the program to expedite care in a timely manner.” Shelley has developed a tracking system that tracks women entered in the program from enrollment to screening, diagnostic, and treatment trajectories. The system allows Shelley to track and support patients while on hold for breast surveillance due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, cancer treatments, or if patients decide to transfer to other screening sites or who may be palliative. Shelley described, “Without consistent tracing, it would be impossible to know where any of my patients are putting them at risk of falling off the screening track.”

Rob and his staff believe in patient focused care. We are also big supporters of our community. We strive to provide excellent, friendly customer service.

Shelley’s dedication to the program is paramount. “I love helping my patients. It is exciting to see women at higher risk for developing breast cancer proactively participating in annual breast MRI and mammography surveillance and making educated and informed decisions about their breast health care. Early detection and prevention of breast cancer enables less invasive treatment intervention. Despite the high volume of work required to run the program, it is a very rewarding job.” Thanks to Shelley’s dedication to the program, more than 1000 women have been identified as carriers of a deleterious gene mutation implicated in breast cancer at PMCC; most common are BRCA1, BRCA2, or Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) gene mutation. Although the high-risk OBSP is essential, government funding and available resources are key to program sustainability, retention, and growth. “Without funding, we cannot adequately provide the necessary services.” Submitted by: Dr. Oliver Kent, Cancer researcher and Senior Scientist at adMare BioInnovations.
