The tulips, daffodils and trilliums have come and gone, and the summer flowers will soon shine their pretty faces and provide a much needed splash of colour to our yards. At this time, many of us are typically looking forward to summer events and festivals, outdoor patios, BBQs with family and friends, or maybe even a wedding or two. But, this is not a typical time and there is so much uncertainty right now that we have to think optimistically and realize that this summer will be different. I certainly empathize with you if you are feeling the stress of getting your business open again or holding onto a job, keeping your sanity at home or for those frontline workers, probably just needing a break! However, things are definitely looking up! It is because of the collective efforts of many of us to stay at home and stop the spread of COVID-19 that the government is loosening emergency measures as well as allowing for the safe, gradual reopening of businesses, services and public spaces to get us back on the road to recovery. We had an overwhelming response to our Hometown Heroes campaign on facebook so this issue is chock full of amazing community members that have been working the front lines for months now. We are so happy to be able to provide some appreciation for those hard-working folks! If we missed you, please reach out and we will happily come to your workplace and take photos to post on our social media, as well as publish in the July issue. Keep washing your hands, don’t touch your mouth or eyes and keep safe.

Not all heroes wear capes!

THANK Y U We salute all Frontline and Essential Workers

We’re here to help!

FEATURE PET: KICKERS Oh hiii, my name is Kickers. Please go slow with me! I’m a very handsome and very sweet three year old kitty who is here at GTHS after being transferred from waaaay up North. No one knows much about my life when I was up there, but what I can tell you, is that I’m not so sure about people just yet... To be honest, I’m a bit of a nervous fellow, but I assure you, I’m a really lovely kitty! Even though I’ve been here in the Main Room for a couple months now, I’m still not ready for that big scary world yet (and by world, I guess I mean the GTHS Main Cat Room), so I still spend most of my day in these safe little hidey-holes where no one can see me. But, whenever the GTHS humans come looking for me, I’m veryyy happy to receive some scratches and lovin. I usually greet them with a head boop and will eventually flop on my side, hoping that means you’ll keep petting me! I’m what the humans call a Spirit Cat. It means I’m a little under-socialized with people, so my new family will have to understand that it may take me weeks or even months before I’m feeling settled and comfortable in my new home. I know not everyone has a home that’s nice and quiet for me, or the patience to potentially wait for months for me to warm up to you, and that’s okay. I know I’ll find my purrrfect home eventually. My adoption fee is $100 and includes my neuter, up-to-date vaccinations, dewormer and a microchip. I’m not going to be the right kitty for everyone, but I hope my purrfect person will come for me soon! Gentle purrs and boops - xoxo Kickers If you’re interested in adopting Kickers, please visit our website at www.gths.ca/animals-for-adoption to review our current virtual adoption procedure.

Providing comfort, care and support to those who are experiencing an end of life journey The healthcare and support staff at Hospice Georgian Triangle’s Campbell House are, indeed, some of South Georgian Bay’s finest Hometown Heroes. On any given day they hold the fragility of human life in their hands. And now, during the Covid 19 pandemic, they come to work to care for others and possibly hold the fragility of their own lives in their hands. But, they all push through this very difficult time to come to work with smiles on their faces to love and care for our patients and patients’ families, just as they have always done. And, in the same way that they would love and care for their own loved ones… with dignity, respect and grace. Our Hometown Heroes at Hospice Georgian Triangle are strong and courageous. They have the will and resiliency to care for the dying in the face of adversity. Can you be any more courageous than that? Hospice Georgian Triangle is a registered charity which provides trained volunteer and professional care and support to individuals living with life-threatening illness or in their last stages of living, to their families and to the bereaved. OFFERING CREMATION, BURIAL, MEMORIAL & TRADITIONAL SERVICES

Sewing project spreads kindness, not germs “I saw this in my neighbourhood in the last couple of days. A young girl who attends Pretty River Academy in Grade 8 was given a challenge to random act of kindness. Her idea was to sew face masks for people in her neighbourhood. They were put up outside and people helped themselves. When I spoke to her mother she told me that the class did a RAK (Random Acts of Kindness) challenge as a part of their virtual learning wellness program to support students in connecting with our community. Initially the student Ava Fischer, put out 16 and they were gone in 2.5 hours.Today, she made another eight more. They are really nicely made and even have a wire sewn into them so that they fit nicely on your face. I thought that this is a feel good story that may inspire others. It also makes me proud of my neighbourhood to have a Grade 8 student doing a random act of kindness! Submitted by: Joan Maloney

Ted Yoannou: In Your Corner Making the most of our lost Spring The bad news emanating from this lost spring of 2020 is unprecedented and well documented. The deaths and sad stories, the impact on our elderly and most vulnerable members of society, the economic devastation, and the long and uncertain road back to something that at least partially resembles our ancient, distant world... of February. But, many of my friends have stories of new and positive activities these past few months. Joanna in Haliburton, writing more and obsessed with homemade bird feeders. Leanne in North York, tirelessly providing masks to seniors’ homes. Jim in Newmarket expanding his culinary skills. And Nick in Thornhill, sleeping in and taking to drinking his first coffee of the day in bed. (Nick has always been way ahead of the curve, dating back to our 1989 summer trek across Europe, wearing only boxer shorts backwards the whole time.) Back in early April, I made a list of some things I’d like to accomplish during this lockdown time. Yet another version of the bucket list that has been swimming through my restless mind for years. But, as Jerry Seinfeld notes, replace the “b” with an “f” and that’s pretty much what happened to my “buck-et” list. There’s always June, I guess. However, I did manage to enjoy a few good things these past couple of months. Pam and I, so close (and so looking forward) to being empty nesters, had our three kids back home with us, finishing up their university and high school years. And, happy to report, it wasn’t a complete disaster. We actually kind of like them, most of the time. Which is not to say, we didn’t have our moments. Here was one exchange with my son as we enjoyed a happy hour bourbon and cigar. CJ: This social distancing is getting ridiculous. I’ve had enough. Me: Kid, you millennials need to suck it up, it’s not like we’re asking you to storm the beaches of Normandy. Just stay home and watch Netflix, for crying out loud. CJ: Ok Boomer. Remind me, which war did you win? And I’m technically Gen Z, not a millennial. Me: Oh yeah? Well, at least I used to cut my parents’ lawn when I was your age. And, I’m technically Gen X, not a Boomer. 10 minutes of awkward silence ensued as we finished our bourbon and cigars and stared off into the distance. Speaking of Netflix, I’ve managed to use this lockdown time to break away from all the mindless sports I used to watch every night and replace it with... a mindless Netflix series every night. Like everyone else, I was totally hooked on Tiger King. Will Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin be our enduring icons of the lost spring of 2020? However, there were also many great movies and series to occupy the time - Joker, Parasite, JoJo Rabbit, After Life, Handmaid’s Tale, Hilary, etc. This has got to be the golden era of “stay home and watch TV”. And I’ve read some good books. That great luxury that I only seem to afford myself on holidays... and once-every-century pandemics. So, as the restrictions loosen and the summer approaches, I now look forward to some golf and tennis. And happy hours with up to 10 people, none of whom Pam gave birth to. And who knows, if these social restrictions drag on through the summer and fall, maybe a return to my pre-marriage weight and that novel I’ve always wanted to write are just around the corner. Or, then again, “buck it”. Submitted by: Ted C.Yoannou, B.A., LL.B. What noisy brakes may be telling you

WE ARE OPEN

The only noises many drivers ever want to hear coming from their vehicles are the sounds of their favourite songs blasting from their car stereos. But cars sometimes make noises that aren’t nearly as inviting as music.

SOCIAL DISTANCING

Noises that seem to pop up when applying the brakes can be especially scary for motorists. No one wants to drive a vehicle with faltering or suspect brakes, so learning to distinguish between the two most common brake noises can be a wise move for drivers.

ENHANCED SANITATION

Grinding brakes Grinding noises indicate a serious problem with the braking system. According to CarsDirect.com, there are two major causes behind the grinding noise made by brakes. If the grinding sound is audible when pressing on the brake pedal, this likely because the rotor disc is coming into contact with part of the caliper. This typically occurs because the brake pads or rotors are extremely worn down, causing the steel backing of the worn out pad to grind against the rotor. Replacing the brake pads immediately is recommended.

If the grinding noise is audible while the vehicle is in motion, debris might be stuck inside the brakes. Drivers might be able to dislodge this debris by repeatedly moving their cars forward and backward in a safe place, such as a driveway. If that does not work, have the brakes serviced by a qualified mechanic. Squealing Many drivers are familiar with the high-pitched squealing sound that comes from their vehicles or those of fellow motorists. That squeal, while certainly not music to the ears, might be a good thing. That’s because Pep Boys® notes that some brake pads are equipped with small steel clips that serve as wear indicators. When brake pads have worn down, these devices produce a squealing sound to let drivers know it’s time to get new brake pads.

FOR A QUOTE CALL JASON: 705-445-2634

But, squealing can be indicative of other things as well. Squealing noises are sometimes heard immediately after brake pads or rotors have been replaced. In such instances, the noise typically subsides within a day or two once the pads have been broken in.

40 South Service Rd., Collingwood www.lewismotorsinc.com

Glazed pads also can create a squealing sound. When calipers stick, the brakes stay partially applied, producing excessive friction or heat. The heat causes the brake pads to glaze. No one wants to hear noises coming from their brakes. However, such noises are often a car’s way of telling drivers that brakes need to be serviced.

DRIVE SAFE THESE BUSINESSES CAN HELP

Stay comfortable & alert on road trips

Elmvale’s Trusted Auto Repair Shop for Four Decades

Few car enthusiasts can resist the siren song of the open road. When the open road beckons, answering its call can open the door to adventure and unending possibilities. Road trips tend to dwindle when winter arrives, and for good reason. Wet, wintry conditions can make roads more dangerous and compromise motorists’ visibility. Many drivers wisely avoid the roads as much as possible in winter, and statistics on crash deaths reflect that caution. As motorists prepare to hit the road again this spring, they should keep these tips in mind to ensure their road trips are as safe as they are adventurous.

FAST FRIENDLY SERVICE

Get ample rest, even if that means making frequent stops

Drivers should build frequent stops and nightly rest into their road trips. Doing so can help to combat the drowsiness that develops when spending long hours behind the wheel staring at the road ahead. Drivers should pay attention to how they’re feeling and pull over if their eyes begin to feel heavy or their minds begin to wander. Each of these are signs of fatigue that could prove deadly to drivers, their passengers and fellow motorists.

1 (800) 392-1151 crewsoninsurance.com

Share driving duties Sharing driving duties is a great way to reduce driving-related eye strain. The Vision Council notes that driving requires the eyes to stay in constant motion as they focus and refocus on approaching objects. Eyes also are in constant contention with distractions like oncoming headlights or the glare of the sun. These factors combine to strain the eyes. As drivers spend more and more time behind the wheel, their eyes become tired and their vision becomes less reliable. Sharing driving duties can ensure a fresh set of eyes is behind the wheel at all times. Maintain proper posture

6 Elgin St. S, Thornbury, ON 519-599-2010 For all your automotive parts and accessories

Proper posture can make drivers less susceptible to the aches and pains that can develop during long car trips. In addition, the auto insurance provider GeicoÂŽ notes that studies have shown that proper posture, which involves sitting an appropriate distance from the steering wheel, makes drivers less likely to suffer severe injuries to the head, neck and chest in front- and rear-end collisions. Road trips make for great getaways. By taking steps to remain comfortable and alert behind the wheel, drivers can make road trips that much more enjoyable.

The importance of having a plan “A dream written down with a date becomes a goal. A goal broken down into steps becomes a plan. A plan backed by action makes your dreams come true. – Greg Reid When global events and times of economic uncertainty bring feelings of panic, stress and worry, having a financial plan can bring the peace of mind you are looking for.

WE ARE OPEN FOR TAKE-OUT

The reliability of a financial plan is only as accurate as the information that is used to create it. It is important to start by taking inventory. Create a simple net worth statement by listing what you own versus what you owe. Taking note of spending patterns can also be powerful. You may not be interested in building a budget, but it is important to know where your money is going and the type of cash flow that is required to fuel your lifestyle. Once you are able to paint an initial picture, you can start to identify some red flags such a lack of emergency funding, too much credit card debt, or a growing line of credit.

Mon-Sat: 11am-7pm Sunday: Closed 7287 HWY 26 MAIN ST. STAYNER We offer a variety of pub food, homemade soups & daily specials. Come and enjoy the friendly atmosphere and tasty food!

This raw data can now be used to start building your financial plan. Working with a professional to develop a comprehensive financial plan can address all aspects of your financial affairs, including cash and debt management, education planning, tax and investment strategy, risk management, as well as estate and legacy planning. A proper plan should provide an overview of your financial picture and how you are tracking to your short-term and long-term goals. It can also help answer some of the following questions: • Can I retire when I want and maintain my desired lifestyle? • Can my portfolio sustain a market downturn? • How can I ensure that I don’t outlive my money? • Is my investment mix appropriate for my risk tolerance? • What is my capacity for risk? • How can I protect the value of my estate? • How can I minimize the taxes I pay each year? • If something were to happen to me unexpectedly, would my family be taken care of? A comprehensive financial plan alongside a customized investment portfolio can be a powerful combination. It can help ensure that you leave no stone unturned related to your financial situation and potential strategies to enhance your wealth. For more information on the benefits of comprehensive wealth management and the importance of financial planning, contact Elizabeth de Groot of RBC Dominion Securities at elizabeth. degroot@rbc.com or 705-444-4742 or visit her website at www.edegroot.ca

The world may be on pause but nothing can stop love When Ruth and Sam Erina got married 72 years ago, an incredible 500 friends and family toasted their happy union. In this time when social circles have shrunk so we all stay safe, it looked like their anniversary would pass as a quiet private affair. But love finds a way despite challenges that life poses - and so do the creative staff at Chartwell Georgian Traditions. On May 15th, the couple relived wedding memories at an elegant dinner featuring the exact menu from their wedding, recreated with care by Chef Wayne Pigeon and his creative team. From the roasted squash and pumpkin soup to the chicken and gravy to the two-tiered wedding cake, every detail was perfect. Their fellow resident friends and staff all got into the romantic spirit, presenting them with a giant card of good wishes. “Everyone here was caught up in the romance and pitched in to go above and beyond to celebrate this occasion for Ruth and Sam. Though a second honeymoon will have to wait for now - the first included a trip to Toronto and Centre Island - the couple were happy to share their secret to making love last. Both Sam and Ruth agreed that '"supporting each other" is the key. Submitted by: Deb McCannell, Retirement Living Consultant Chartwell Georgian Traditions Retirement Residences

Cancer Chat In this time of increasing uncertainty, one thing is indisputable, “Cancer is a f@&$#€” exclaims Narda Hunt, Collingwood mother of two. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Narda heads to Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital to undergo radiation therapy to blast the cancer that has metastasized to her bones. In 2011, on her 30th birthday and while still breast feeding her youngest daughter, Narda was diagnosed with breast cancer. Subsequently, she learned she carries a BRCA2 mutation which runs in her family. Following a double mastectomy and punishing rounds of chemotherapy, Narda assumed she was disease free. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Canadian women. One in eight women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime. BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations account for the majority of cases. BRCA proteins function as tumor suppressors and the hereditary mutations in these genes disrupt normal function. Mutant BRCA2 carriers often experience high frequency of metastasis including liver, bone and central nervous system. While the five-year survival rate for breast cancer is high, once it becomes metastatic it is largely untreatable. In 2017, a CAT scan after a ski accident confirmed a tumor on Narda’s liver. “You could literally see it,” she said. Narda was diagnosed with stage IV metastatic cancer, an aggressive subtype of the disease, and was told to prepare for the worst. “My oncologist told me that I had weeks to live and set me up with palliative care” Narda recalls. Over the spring and into the summer of 2017, Narda underwent multiple rounds of chemotherapy but the tumor was refractory to treatment and doubled in size. Her doctors maintained, “There is nothing we can do”. Living on a permanent intravenous drip in palliative care and close to liver failure, Narda was losing hope and decided to explore alternatives to provincially available treatments. She learned of a technique used in Germany called regional chemotherapy: anti-cancer drugs are pumped through an artery directly into the tumor, rather than the body as a whole. Regional chemotherapy is used for certain cancers in Canada, such as pancreatic and abdominal cancers and melanomas, but is not approved for metastatic breast cancer in our country. Narda reached out to Dr. Karl Aigner in Germany, an oncologist with 35 years’ clinical experience with regional chemotherapy who established that she was a candidate. With the help of family and friends, Narda raised the $200,000 required to travel from Collingwood to Germany to undergo regional chemotherapy. Following treatment in September 2017, her tumour shrunk considerably. In the ensuing months, Narda “felt normal” and was able to get back to doing things like mountain biking. “There is minimal sign of disease on the liver,” Narda claimed nearly a year later. Although the trip to Germany was a success, the cancer persisted with its own agenda. Out of nowhere, Narda lost the ability to speak and was rushed to emergency at St. Mike’s Hospital in Toronto. The doctors diagnosed a brain bleed, and following an MRI, a golf ball size tumor was observed in her brain. In January 2020, Narda began a biweekly treatment of precision radiation therapy with Gamma Knife Icon, the newest and most advanced stereotactic radiosurgery system (SRS) used at Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre. SRS minimizes side effects associated with whole-brain radiation, such as damage to memory and cognitive functioning.

From our residents with gratitude Thank you to the entire Balmoral Place team for going above and beyond during this difficult time. Here are just a few kind words from our residents . . . “I love that there is always real caring and laughter when you come to my door. It is amazing the hard work and long days you are all doing. I can’t help but be content and glad to be here.” —Joan “Big thanks to all the staff and the fine food they’ve been delivering.” —Graham

To share a note of appreciation with them, please post it on Facebook @BalmoralPlaceSeniors or send it to us at Info@BalmoralPlace.ca.

Now, Narda has pain in her upper arm and a recent bone scan revealed a tumor in the humorous. Facing an uncertain future, Narda maintains it is important to have a positive outlook and establish a strong believe system. Amidst all the turmoil in her life, Narda and her family are making masks to protect health care workers from COVID-19 exposure. Narda writes on Facebook to her friends, “My strongest belief is in prayer. I hold onto hope, for God is forever faithful. Every day is a gift.”

Potential indicators of roof trouble Few homeowners give the roofs of their homes much thought until a problem arises. But learning to recognize potential indicators of roof trouble can help homeowners prevent potentially drastic situations down the road.

24

With regard to home repairs, homeowners may be able to delay some projects until the weather permits or they find room in their budgets. But other areas, including the roof, may demand immediate action. Light: Homeowners with attics in their homes can inspect the ceilings inside the attic for signs of holes or leaks. Light peering through the top of the house indicates a hole or leak, as does stains or streaks on the ceiling. Worn shingles: Shingles should lie flat against the roof, so any that appear to be buckling or turning up are damaged and in need of repair. A single damaged shingle does not require a full roof replacement, but inspect all the shingles nonetheless. Another indicator of shingle problems can be found when cleaning downspouts or gutters. If the gutters and downspouts contain lots of shingle granules, the roof may soon need to be replaced. Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it off, so homeowners should keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected.

GEORGIAN LIFE • JUNE 2020

Age: Another indicator of roof trouble may be the age of the roof. Even if there are no visible signs of damage, homeowners whose roofs have some years under their belt may want to consider replacing them. Asphalt shingle roofs typically have life expectancies of 20 to 25 years, while roofs installed over existing layers of shingles may need to be replaced after 20 years. Recognizing minor roof damage before it escalates into a larger problem can save homeowners substantial amounts of money.

How home design trends are evolving for social distancing COVID-19 has brought changes to everything, and home design is no exception

Experts are expecting to see lasting impacts on everything from the materials we use to the rooms we prioritize.

We have all of your renovation needs covered from start to finish

Check out these and other noteworthy trends: Houses over apartments: Many people who live in condos or apartments do so to be closer to the action - work, entertainment and shops - and never planned on spending much time at home. But, the pandemic has changed that, and more people are going to want a home that offers plenty of room and outdoor space in case they need to self-isolate again.

Self-sufficiency: A hard lesson we’ve learned is that things and services we thought we could count on aren’t necessarily a sure thing, so items that increase self-reliance will become very popular. Expect to see more homes with sources of energy like solar panels, sources of heat like fireplaces and stoves, and even urban and indoor gardens that allow you to grow your own produce.

Outdoor living: Between playgrounds closing and parks becoming overcrowded, many of us are turning to our balconies, patios and backyards for fresh air and nature. This means we’re going to be investing more in our outdoor spaces, with functional kitchens, soothing water features, cozy firepits, and high-quality outdoor furniture to create a much-needed escape. Healthier spaces: Thanks to spending more time indoors and reprioritizing our health, we’ll turn to design to help ensure our homes are safe and healthy for our families. We’ll see a rise in products like water filtration systems as well as materials that improve indoor air quality. For new homes and additions, alternatives to wood-framing like insulated concrete forms from Nudura, which offer improved ventilation for healthier indoor air quality and an environment that’s less susceptible to mold, will be key.

Home office space: Business experts are suggesting many companies will see that working from home is not only possible but offers tangible benefits, like saving money on office space rent. With working from home on the rise, creating a home office space that inspires productivity will be a major project many of us tackle. Luxury home office furniture that feels chic and blends into your décor as well as ergonomic chairs and desks will see a major boost.

Go green in your lawn & garden this spring Spring is a season of rejuvenation as flowers begin to sprout and grass regains its lush green look Water at the right times of day: Homeowners who water their lawns and gardens at the right time of day can help the planet and reduce their energy bills. As spring gradually gives way to summer, temperatures typically rise. Watering during the coolest times of the day means less water will be lost to evaporation, ensuring water-needy soil will get all it needs to help lawns and gardens thrive. Early morning watering before the sun reaches its midday peak and/or evening watering as the sun is setting are typically great times to water lawns and gardens, rather than when temperatures are at their hottest.

Green is certainly a colour that’s synonymous with spring. Gardening enthusiasts can find a way to make spring even more green by embracing several ecofriendly gardening practices as they bring their lawns and gardens back to life in the months to come. Create a compost pile: Composting is an eco-friendly way to enrich lawns and gardens. Composting helps to conserve water because compost promotes moisture retention in soil, reducing homeowners’ need to water their lawns and gardens while also helping them to save money on their water bills. Composting also helps homeowners avoid the need to use potentially harmful chemical fertilizers because compost is a natural, slow release fertilizer. In addition, according to Canada’s Green Action Centre, compostable materials make up 40 percent of residential waste. So composting can dramatically reduce the amount of waste homeowners ultimately send to landfills.

Use a rain barrel: Rain barrels provide another great way to conserve water while tending to lawns and gardens. Rain barrels collect and store rain water from roofs and downspouts, keeping water from washing into sewage systems where it can’t be put to good use. Water collected in rain barrels can be used in various ways. Many homeowners can use water from rain barrels to water their lawns, gardens and houseplants, saving money on their water bills along the way.

Replace gas-powered mowers: Reel mowers may seem like relics from simpler times, but today’s reel mowers, while just as eco-friendly as their predecessors, are unlike those of yesteryear. According to the Planet Natural Research Center, an online resource for organic gardeners, gas-powered engines emit more than 10 times the hydrocarbons per amount of gas burned than auto engines. But, reel mowers are fuel-free and less expensive than gas-powered mowers. Planet Natural also notes that reel mowers snip grass like scissors, leaving finer trimmings that can serve as nourishing, weed-deterring mulch for yards.

Spring gardening season provides a great opportunity for lawn and garden enthusiasts to embrace a variety of eco-friendly practices that can save them money and protect the planet.

Exterior renovations that can improve your home’s value Renovating a home to improve its value can be a smart investment. Interior improvements, such as updating kitchens and baths, offer good return on investment, but there are plenty of exterior renovations that can add value to a home and give it that coveted “wow” factor. Knowing which improvements add value to a home can help homeowners tailor their efforts to those that are most financially beneficial. Landscaping: Abundant and well-planned landscaping can instantly boost curb appeal. Prospective home buyers say a home’s curb appeal is an important factor in their buying decisions. As buyers use the internet to look for their dream homes, there’s no denying a beautifully landscaped, nicely photographed property can entice buyers to click and read more about a house.

Address insects & minor repairs: Improving home value may come down to fixing areas of the home that can negatively affect its appeal to buyers. Hire an inspector to look at key components of the house and recommend what needs to be fixed. This way it is discovered before home buyers come in and do their own inspections. Termite infestations, deteriorating roofs and hidden water leaks are some things that might need fixing. Improve the entryway: The front door is the focal point of a home’s exterior. Invest in a new door or paint it a striking colour to add appeal. Such a door provides visual appeal and added security - things buyers look for. In addition to the front door, make sure that the entryway has a level walkway, steps that are in good repair, accents that are free from rust or tarnish, and decorative plants. Outdoor lighting: Outdoor lighting can add to the ambiance of a property and serve as a security feature. Utilize different lights, such as a bright light by the entry, uplighting in trees and shrubs for drama, a light-lined path to the door to improve visibility, and motion-detection lights to improve the security of the property.

Repaint or reside the exterior: A fresh coat of paint or new (or cleaned) siding can instantly give homes a facelift. Neutral, warm and inviting colours tend to have the widest appeal. Adding manufactured stone veneer to the home can offer an excellent return on your investment, as well as garage door replacement.

Prepare HVAC systems for warmer days ahead Spring is an ideal time to have HVAC systems inspected and repaired, if necessary

The arrival of a new season can be an exciting time. Homeowners may have renewed vigor to start home renovation projects or even tackle some cleaning and organization tasks. Before the weather starts to warm up too much, homeowners may want to evaluate their home cooling needs and ensure that all equipment is in good working order. Spring air conditioning inspections and tuneups are essential steps in system performance. Homeowners should not take for granted that a system that performed optimally last year will do so this year when temperatures climb. Various factors, including weather damage, dust and grime, mechanical wear and tear, and even rodent or insect infestations, can compromise HVAC systems. Since HVAC systems have so many moving parts, a thorough inspection of such systems can save headaches and money down the road. According to Heating Ontario, the extreme weather conditions that come along with fall and winter can be especially taxing on homes and the systems that keep them comfortable. During a spring visit, an HVAC technician will perform maintenance on the air conditioner and make sure it is ready for the heat of summertime. This maintenance may include cleaning the unit, checking controls, calibrating the thermostat, lubricating moving parts, checking refrigerant levels, tightening electrical connections, and clearing any clogs. Homeowners are urged to also change the filter at the start of the cooling season. Correcting any issues in the HVAC system well in advance of the arrival of warm weather can help ensure comfort when air conditioning is needed. As an added advantage, homeowners should install programmable thermostats if they do not already have them to keep cooling as cost- and energy-efficient as possible.

Garden tools for beginners The right tool for the job is essential to working safely and efficiently. This is as true in the workplace as it is in the garden.

Novice gardeners may not know where to begin in regards to which tools they need. The following are eight items that can serve as a solid foundation for beginning gardeners.

home & property maintenance • dump runs • odd jobs delivery • landscaping • spring & fall cleanup

Gloves: Your hands will be working hard, so it pays to protect them from calluses, blisters, splinters, insects, and dirt. Look for water-resistant gloves that are also breathable.

Hand pruners: Hand pruners are essential for cutting branches, cleaning up shrubs, dead-heading flowers, and various other tasks. Choose ergonomic, no-slip handles that will make work easier. Rust-resistant, nonstick blades also are handy. Wheelbarrow: A wheelbarrow can transport gear to garden beds or tote dirt, leaves, rocks, and other materials around the landscape. A good wheelbarrow is strong but light enough to maneuver when full.

Loppers: Long-handled loppers will fit the bill for thick branches. The long handles provide leverage to cut through branches an inch or more in diameter. Hand trowel: A hand trowel is a handy tool that lets you dig holes or unearth weeds. While shopping for a trowel, consider getting a hand-held garden fork, which can aerate soil and cut through roots. Hose/watering can: Keeping gardens hydrated is part of ensuring their health. That makes a hose and a watering can two invaluable tools to have around. Invest in a lightweight, expandable hose if storage space is at a premium. An adjustable nozzle will enable you to customize the water flow as needed. A watering can is an easy way to tote water to hard-to-reach pots and containers. Garden kneeler: Gardeners often bend and kneel while working in the soil. That puts pressure on the back and knees. A comfortable garden kneeler with memory foam or one made from shockabsorbing material can reduce aches and pains. Garden hoe: Garden hoes till soil, remove weeds and perform many other tasks. A garden hoe can be used along with a full-sized shovel, trowel and garden rake.

Restoration • Repairs Cleaning • Polishing

This list is just the tip of the garden tool iceberg.Visit a garden center and speak with a professional about other tools that can be added to the mix.

Why weeds can be found everywhere The ubiquitous nature of weeds can make them seem like they can grow anywhere, and that’s because they can. Weeds can grow anywhere there’s room for them to sprout, including gardens, sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots. One of the things that helps weeds spread so much is how productive they can be at producing seeds. An actively growing weed plant will produce thousands of seeds and disperse those seeds throughout the season. One of the more recognizable weeds is the dandelion. During its growing season, a dandelion can effectively spread its seeds thanks in large part to the wind, which can blow seeds all over, thereby allowing a single dandelion to spread its seeds far and wide. Successful weed plants share many characteristics, including an ability to reproduce both sexually and asexually. Successful weed plants also are clever in terms of getting around, as their seeds can attach to people and animals and even float on water. Weeds also put up a fight when they’re confronted by humans. Humans who try to pull weeds may instead break them. The broken weeds can then resprout, ultimately spreading their seeds again. The resiliency of weeds also is evident in their ability to stay dormant for long periods of time. For example, weeds can stay in the soil for years before germinating, proving that these unwelcome guests aren’t just pesky, but also patient.

Why homeowners should add more exterior light to their properties Improving a home’s exterior may be as simple as adding more lighting to improve functionality & beauty Homeowners are increasingly realizing the benefits of improving the exteriors of their home, which can be just as valuable as improving the interior spaces. As individuals design picturesque garden beds and cultivate lavish lawns or revamp exteriors with architectural features, they probably want to spotlight these improvements. This is where exterior lighting can be put to great use.

Exterior illumination can cast a glow on various features, but there are many other reasons to increase lighting around the exterior of a home. Safety: Trips and falls can occur at night when trying to traverse walkways and landscapes in the dark, as it can be difficult to see rocks, stairs and uneven pavement. Outdoor lighting can illuminate pathways, entryways and other areas for safer access for homeowners and their guests. Extend outdoor entertaining: Ample lighting can increase the amount of time one can use outdoor spaces and make them the perfect gathering spot. As autumn arrives, days become shorter. However, patios, porches and more can get extended use with lighting.

Safeguard security: A well-lit home may be less likely to be targeted by burglars than one swathed in darkness and shadows. Lights can remain on all evening or be motion-triggered. Setting lights on timers also ensures that the home is illuminated whether residents are home or not. Create drama: Landscape lighting designers can establish focal points around the landscape and highlight the best features of a property. Uplighting in trees, silhouetting techniques to showcase plants and spotlights to show off architectural features are all options for homeowners to consider. Add value: Exterior lighting can add value of a home. Home buyers say that outdoor lighting is important when buying a home. If current residents are thinking about selling, now may be the time to invest in exterior lighting.

Improve storage inside of your home Homes are getting bigger, but it seems like people are still lamenting a lack of storage space. With these easy tips, you can can maximize your storage capabilities thoroughout your home immediately. Utilize track storage systems: Closets may be plentiful, but if not efficiently utilized, space may still seem lacking. Track closet storage systems often make greater use of closet space than traditional shelf and hanging rod systems. Customizing closets using track systems or other modifications can improve utility of all closets in the house. Invest in storage beds: Storage beds typically feature cubbies or drawers within a platform-style bed frame. It’s a practical home storage solution, and does not require any building.

We strive to go beyond your expectations while staying competitive with our pricing.

Think vertically: Maximize spaces by looking up and down for storage possibilities. Items that are not used frequently, such as seasonal decorations or travel suitcases, can be stored in high spaces. Shelving on walls can go as high as necessary and be put to use in awkward wall areas, such as in corners or under eaves.

No job is too big or too small for our company. We have worked on large corporate buildings down to small cottages and will provide a customized service geared to you!

Invest in storage benches/ottomans: A stopping area inside the front door with a storage bench can house shoes, umbrellas, hats, backpacks, and other items, keeping them tidy and out of sight. In living rooms, look for chests or ottomans that are decorative and functional. Store throw blankets or board games inside. Recess drawers or shelves: Gain more storage by recessing a chest of drawers into what is called the “knee wall” of homes that have sloped ceilings in attics and upstairs bedrooms. Utilize these short walls in an efficient manner by sinking drawers or shelves into them, without taking up floor space. Rafter shelving: While in the attic (or a garage), add hanging shelves to rafters or exposed beams to create off-the-floor storage as well. These are just a few of the handy ways to improve the interior storage space in a home.

Addressing insects before summer arrives Addressing insects means employing various natural strategies to make outdoor entertaining more pleasant. It’s impossible to ensure a completely bug-free outdoor environment, but there are steps homeowners can take to reduce the amount of pests who want to join the party. House flies, fruit flies, mosquitoes, wasps, and bees tend to be abundant in spring and summer. Ants, termites and other bugs also can be prevalent. These insects, however pesky they may seem, often can be kept away without the use of pesticides and other chemicals. Lure away pests: Many insects will be happy to snack on a treat and leave you alone. Put out a dish of sugar water or slices of fruit for insects that feed on sweets and nectar, or a slice of sandwich meat for wasps and yellow jackets. Place these items a fair distance from where you are eating, relaxing or gathering. Install fans: A patio ceiling fan can blow away mosquitoes and flies relatively easily and you will likely enjoy a nice breeze on sultry days. Use mulch wisely: Mulch will add to curb appeal, but having it too close to the house can present an ideal environment for roaches and ants to nest and find their way into a home. As mulch decomposes, it generates heat and a cozy spot for pests, including mice. Keep mulch 12 inches away from the home’s foundation and entertaining spaces, or use inorganic mulch. Keep patios clean: Sweep up and clean away any spilled foods and beverages promptly. Even a tiny nugget of food can attract ants and other insects. Use natural pest deterents: Citronella oils can drive away some insects, as can garlic and rosemary. Lavender, eucalyptus, marigolds, and other pungent aromas will naturally keep mosquitoes and other flying insects at bay. Some people also have luck with mint-flavoured mouthwash misted on patios and furniture.

Use light colours: According to HouseLogic, studies show that bugs see dark and bright colours more easily than light colours. Choose lighter shades of paint for outdoor areas and it may make these spaces less attractive to some bugs. Leave those spider webs: Many people yell “eek” at the sight of spiders and spider webs. But, those arachnids and their sticky webs can do a fine job of capturing many unwanted insects. Resist the temptation to tear down webs and shoo spiders away.

Address standing water: Mosquitoes and some other insects lay their eggs in standing water. Routinely drain areas where water collects, including gutters and downspouts
