What is Responsible Investing?

Investors are becoming increasingly aware of what environmental and social risks may be present in their investment portfolios. Many individuals are choosing responsible investing because of its unique ability to combine the goals of financial success and social impact. Responsible investing is an umbrella term that encompasses a broad range of investing approaches, including socially responsible investing (SRI); environmental, social, and governance investing (ESG); and impact investing. Growing awareness about environmental concerns and socioeconomic inequalities have fueled popularity in responsible investing approaches amongst investors. More and more studies are showing you don’t have to sacrifice performance when aligning your personal values with your investment choices. Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) Also referred to as values-based or ethical investing, SRI strategies use both negative and positive screening of companies, industries or sectors that align with the investor’s values. A negative screen is used to remove sectors or companies that do not meet one’s responsibility standards. Common exclusions include companies that produce alcohol, tobacco, weapons or fossil fuels. Using a positive screen, an investor may choose to initiate exposure in sectors that align with their values, such a renewable energy. Environment, Social, & Governance (ESG) Investing ESG investors are seeking companies with leading environment, social and governance metrics compared to their peers. Such metrics could include climate change, pollution and waste management, community relations, corporate philanthropy, and board accountability. The goal is to improve performance while limiting exposure to companies that don’t meet ESG standards. ESG approaches do not employ negative screens as SRI approaches do. Impact Investing Impact investing strategies seek to generate a measureable, positive social, or environmental impact and are often done in private markets. Financial returns on this type of investment are often considered secondary to the primary goal of tangible impact. In this regard, it is important to be able to measure the impact of this investment. Examples might include investments in low-income housing loan assistance or micro-loan initiatives to womenowned small businesses. In both of these examples, a tangible impact can be measured (i.e., number of households able to afford housing or number of businesses started). SUNSET POINT PARK

The Five Stages of a Case Slightly lesser known than the five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance) are the five stages of a criminal case. As you will see, they share some remarkable similarities.

Collingwood

1. The Incident There is usually a trigger event that leads to being charged by the police – a driving infraction, an argument, a confrontation, a misdeed at work or home, something that may involve other people, money, substances. The incident may have occurred exactly as the police and witnesses say it did, or maybe it did not occur at all, and mistakes have been made, or perhaps the truth lies somewhere in between. At this stage, the police will usually release you from the scene or from the police station with paperwork that tells you what you are charged with and when you have to attend your first court date, usually a month or two later. For more serious allegations, you may be held in custody and taken to court for a bail hearing.

Go to thechipper.ca for hours and menus

You may be in denial at this point, but it is something you have to face. 2. Hiring a Lawyer Soon after being charged, the next step is to retain a lawyer. This will undoubtedly lead to some anger on your part! However, it is vital to ensure you have a well-qualified representative. In the first several weeks, you need to know how this court process works, your options, and how the timeline will unfold. Your lawyer should explain things in simple language, be in regular contact, and advise you appropriately. They do not determine what you ultimately decide, but it is critical they help you make the best choices.

ES AND WIN SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS

3. Disclosure and Crown Attorney Meetings Around the time of the first court date, disclosure will be obtained from the Crown Attorney. This is the evidence and usually consists of police officers’ notes, witness statements, videos, photos, etc. Over the next few months and subsequent court dates, the disclosure should be reviewed with you, and then there are meetings to be had between your lawyer and the Crown Attorney, with a Judge involved in some cases. Will the charges be withdrawn, will there be a guilty plea, is the case proceeding to a trial? This is the bargaining stage. If there is to be a guilty plea, there needs to be an agreement as to what facts you are accepting as being accurate and what charge you are pleading guilty to. There may be an agreement as to what the recommended sentence will be, or this may be in dispute, left for the Judge to make the final determination. Probation, a fine, jail time? 4. Decision Time - What To Do? Decision time has come. There may be an offer to resolve on the table, but it is not perfect. At this stage, a number of lawyers fail, some being too resolutionoriented, some too trial-driven. The focus needs to be on you, the client, and the discussion must be about the potential repercussions and consequences of a guilty plea versus the time, risk, cost, stress, and uncertainty of a trial. If it a difficult decision, some depression may develop, as the reality of the situation sets in. Anxiety and mental paralysis, as you struggle with what to do. Let’s hope your lawyer has done excellent work and you are fully informed, confident of the next steps. The depression is now replaced with relief, understanding, and perhaps even elation. 5. It’s Finally Over While it may not always seem like it, your case will eventually end. The charges might be withdrawn, there may be a guilty plea that provides closure and a good ending given the circumstances, or a Judge may say at the end of a trial, “guilty” and impose a sentence, or “not guilty” and set you free. At this stage, the case is finally over. Whatever the outcome, life goes on, and tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life. Acceptance.

An interview with local volunteer and teacher,

Kellie Casey

“We rescue animals,

and they rescue us”

For so many of us, animals come into our lives with an innate source of healing power. The mindfulness and the resilience that we learn from our pets carry us through challenges and allow us to see the important things more clearly. We had the pleasure of connecting with Kellie Casey, wanting to learn more about her family and how they adjusted through challenging pandemic days together. It was no surprise to discover that their pets played a significant role in their health and wellness.

Optimistic is a great way to describe our Northern Dogs. They most often come to us broken in bodies or spirits. They have virtually no access to vet care, proper nutrition, or medicine. Through their journey, when they become part of a new family, their joy and optimism are unmeasurable. Animals teach us an important lesson. To be present and enjoy each moment together. Life is so precious, and the simple moments are essential to take in and appreciate together. They lead by example for us this way. “In our family, one of our northern dogs survived because of their adaptability and resilience, and those are two things in the pandemic that we need. So, they have a lot to teach us. They can show us how to adapt to the current situation, but in a way that you can be positive and hopeful.”

Kellie is a founding volunteer with the GTHS. She was instrumental in her work to establish the GTHS Humane Education program, and as she explains it, working with “in-risk” youth to develop the amazing benefits of the human-animal bond. Amazingly, Kellie is also a dedicated dog care volunteer, an adopter of many animals, and a loyal monthly PAW donor.

On pets and gratitude: “There is so much power in realizing what you do have. Animals are always just grateful for whatever you give them. Love, food, a home.” For Kellie’s family, their pets are a wonderful focus during rolling periods of lockdown. “Even on a rainy day or a snowy day, they still need to go out,” she reminds us. “Their needs don’t change. They keep us motivated and healthy. Our pets camp with us, they hike, they canoe, they play a big role in our healthy lifestyle as a family. It’s important to focus on what we do have throughout the pandemic. If you’re lucky enough to have your health and your family’s health, then looking at the positive side has helped our family weather the pandemic.”

As a teacher, Kellie has done some fascinating work to explore the relationship between rescue animals and challenged youth. “A lot of the time, these young people can relate so well to rescue animals because they are both trying to reintegrate themselves. They come from situations where sometimes their basic needs are not met. When we introduce them to rescue animals, they connect on a very special level. Their confidence starts to flourish, along with their need to take care of each other. From this amazing relationship, there is so much growth, so much joy, and companionship. They truly get each other.”, she explains.

The therapeutic value of the human-animal bond is undeniable. In this challenging time, pets help us through the day.

Living through the current pandemic, we asked Kellie to share how this concept has helped her family make strides together and cope. “For our family, the current pandemic has become a time of reflection, time to refocus on the important things, the simple things. We are grateful for our health and wellness and the opportunity to reconnect and spend time doing things we haven’t had a chance to do in previous years. Our pets are central to our lifestyle. They teach us to be mindful, to be resilient, and to fill our spirits every single day, regardless of what that day brings.” Pets keep us mindful. From Kellie’s perspective, pets teach us mindfulness. This has been an essential element of wellbeing for her family over the past year. “Our pets are happy every day; they are oblivious to the pandemic. They take things as they come, and they live in the moment. They teach us how to do this.” As an advocate for helping rescue efforts in under-resourced communities, Kellie also explores the gratitude we find within animals.

I have more physical limitations now than I did when I first started volunteering. There are some days I sit with GTHS dogs and sing to them. I enjoy singing and playing guitar and do that for my dogs often. I don’t have my guitar in the shelter but they seem to enjoy the singing. I always tell them something better is coming for them.

“You might feel frustrated by the end of the day, especially when you can’t see your friends, but they look at you, and their eyes say, ‘but you have us.’ While you can’t be with your human friends, you’ve got your animal friends, and they can fulfill a social need in a different way.” Thank you to Kellie and her family for reminding us that our most wonderful companions show us the qualities that we need to focus on when times feel challenging. Wishing you joy, hope, mindfulness, and gratitude in the days ahead.

Cancer Chat “My life from the very beginning has been challenging.” These are the words of Raymond Hardisty, a local celebrity from Stayner Ontario. As a child, Raymond beat leukemia. As a young man, Raymond campaigns to increase awareness and raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network. To date, his efforts have raised over $77,000.

Raymond’s story began when he was five months old, marking the start of a journey in-and-out of hospitals that would last 18 years. At five months, Raymond was diagnosed with a rare congenital blood disorder called severe congenital neutropenia (SCN) or Kostmann syndrome. SCN is a genetic disorder that causes a deficiency of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell (WBC) produced in the bone marrow that helps fight infection. In infancy, the syndrome manifests with life-threatening bacterial infections.

Since Raymond was born with defective bone marrow, he was given a bone marrow transplant in attempt to increase the success of chemotherapy. Raymond received an allogenic stem cell transplant from an unrelated donor and was released from the hospital days before his fifth birthday. Although the donor’s tissue type was a perfect match, a year after the transplant, Raymond developed a medical complication called graft versus host disease (GVHD). GVHD can occur since the donated bone marrow views the recipient’s body as foreign. The graft produces lymphocytes that attack the child’s organs and tissues. Musculoskeletal involvement of GVHD in children can result in tightening of muscle, tendons, ligaments, and the skin, thus locking these tissues in place on the bones preventing normal movement of the associated body parts, often with severe joint pain and decreased range of motion. Every day Raymond faces challenges associated with GVHD but maintains his independence and ability to inspire. Raymond’s spirit, drive, and enthusiasm are most prominent.

Raymond’s young immune system was severally compromised, and over that first year, he became sicker and sicker. He developed sepsis, and his parents were told he might not live to be two years old. Serendipitously, Raymond’s mother read an article about a new treatment using granulocyte colony stimulating factor (GCSF). Exogenous GCSF is a leading therapy for SCN and clinically improves neutrophil counts and immune function. Raymond was given GCSF and made a dramatic recovery. Unfortunately, long-term complications of Kostmann syndrome include acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Raymond was diagnosed with AML at the age of four. AML is a cancer of the bone marrow and blood which progresses rapidly. In AML, there is an underproduction of normal bone marrow cells leaving the patient with too many immature and defective WBCs including neutrophils, which quickly outcompete healthy cells. Fortunately, the outlook for kids with AML has improved, and with treatment, most are cured.

participated in the paper balloon drive at the Dairy Queen in Stayner, where he works, and has raised an impressive $30,000. “I do it for all the children in the hospital.”

Every year, Raymond sets and surpasses his goals, knocking on doors asking for donations. “It’s my way of saying thank you to Sick Kids Hospital for giving me my life back.” In 2020, while the world panicked over COVID-19, Raymond started a bottle drive to collect empty beer and wine bottles to raise money supporting SickKids Foundation and Children’s Miracle Network. Raymond’s bottle drive slogan, “Turn your empties into hope,” underscores the integrity of this young man. The bottle drive efforts have raised over an astonishing $16,000. You can help Raymond exceed his fund-raising goal of $100,000. Raymond’s bottle drive for miracles continues May 12th through August 25th on Wednesday evenings from 6-8 pm. The dropoff locations are Stayner (Station Park Gazebo), Wasaga Beach (DQ), New Lowell (Recreation Park), Creemore (Community Centre & Arena), Nottawa (Harrison Denture Clinic), and Elmvale (6 Corbett Street). With summer approaching, enjoy the warm weather, crack a beer, and take those empties to the donation centre near you.

After years of visits to the hospital and fighting a plethora of medical complications, Raymond has been cancer-free for 27 years. Now Raymond wants to give back. “No child should have to spend years of their lives or their Birthday or Christmas in the hospital,” he says. Between 2008-2018, Raymond

How to identify poison ivy It’s baaack... poison ivy is an unwelcome guest on many properties. Unfortunately, many people don’t recognize the presence of poison ivy on their property until it’s too late and they’ve already fallen victim to the uncomfortable, itchy red rash that is the plant’s hallmark. According to Poison-Ivy.org, a website providing information about poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac, the rash from poison ivy may first appear as just a slight itchy spot. But, that spot will gradually get worse and can even cover your entire body with giant red sores if left untreated or if it goes undetected for too long. That only highlights the importance of learning to recognize poison ivy on a property and taking the appropriate measures to prevent anyone from coming into contact with it. The poison ivy rash can be very uncomfortable. Poison ivy rash is caused by an allergic reaction to an oily resin called urushiol (u-ROO-she-ol). Wash your skin right away if you come into contact with this oil, unless you know you’re not sensitive to it. Washing off the oil may reduce your chances of getting a poison ivy rash. You can treat mild cases of poison ivy rash at home with soothing lotions and cool baths. You may need prescription medication for a rash that’s severe or widespread.

Signs and symptoms of a poison ivy rash include: • Redness • Itching • Swelling • Blisters • Difficulty breathing, if you’ve inhaled the smoke from burning poison ivy Poison ivy rash often appears in a straight line because of the way the plant brushes against your skin. But, if you develop a rash after touching a piece of clothing or pet fur that has urushiol on it, the rash may be more spread out. You can also transfer the oil to other parts of your body with your fingers. The reaction usually develops 12 to 48 hours after exposure and lasts two to three weeks. The severity of the rash depends on the amount of urushiol that gets on your skin. Learning to identify the plant will help in avoiding exposure and developing a rash. Some telltale signs of the poison ivy plant: • Poison ivy plants always have leaves of three. No poison ivy plants have more than three leaves. • Poison ivy always grow left, then right. That means that the stem/branch of leaves closest to the root of the plant will always lean left. Subsequent stems/ branches of leaves can lean right. Stems/branches of poison ivy leaves are never side by side. • Poison ivy plants never have thorns. • The edges of poison ivy leaves are never saw-toothed or scalloped. • Poison ivy leaves will appear differently depending on the season. In spring, leaves will appear red. As spring turns into summer, the leaves will gradually appear more green. Come fall, the green leaves will look as if they were brushed with red, with some leaves featuring patches or spots of red.

Swimming pool landscaping ideas Backyard pools provide a way to cool off and enjoy a taste of luxury without having to travel. Backyard pools provided even more convenience and a welcome respite in 2020, as many public pools were closed in response to social distancing restrictions put in place during the pandemic. Many homeowners realize that touching up the landscaping around the pool can provide the finishing touch to their backyard retreats after installing pools. Not all landscaping is the same, and homeowners should choose plants that look beautiful, are tolerant to pool splash-out, and won’t outgrow the area. A plant that is attractive at two feet tall can grow rapidly and drop leaves or other debris into the pool. When selecting options for pool landscaping, there are some considerations to keep in mind: • Choose plants that will provide privacy. • Know which kind of climate a plant needs before purchasing it. Tropical plants may be fitting poolside, but will they endure when the season is over? • Design according to the theme of the home, as plants should complement the existing style. Modern foliage may not blend well with a home styled after a traditional cottage. • Decide whether you can accept spreading or trailing plants that can cascade over retaining walls and other infrastructure. • Look at trees that won’t drop too many leaves, flowers, or fruit into the water. • Think about having layers of plants to soften the landscape, making a small pool seem larger and more luxurious. • Don’t overlook the possibility of a lawn abutting pavers or concrete surrounding a pool, as it can soften the edges and keep spaces open and inviting. • Incorporate herbs or fragrant plants, which can transform a pool day into a spa experience. Consider low-maintenance lavender as an option. Pool landscaping must marry a variety of different features and plant requirements. As a result, a professional consultation may be the route to take. Landscape architects will have the know-how to select plant varieties that will be tolerant, beautiful, and fulfill homeowners’ wishes. Backyard pools can make a backyard retreat that much more enjoyable. Landscaping offers the softness and beauty that adds a finishing touch to poolside retreats.

Addressing insects before summer arrives Addressing insects means employing various natural strategies to make outdoor entertaining more pleasant. It’s impossible to ensure a completely bug-free outdoor environment, but there are steps homeowners can take to reduce the amount of pests who want to join the party. House flies, fruit flies, mosquitoes, wasps, and bees tend to be abundant in spring and summer. Ants, termites and other bugs also can be prevalent. These insects, however pesky they may seem, often can be kept away without the use of pesticides and other chemicals. Lure away pests: Many insects will be happy to snack on a treat and leave you alone. Put out a dish of sugar water or slices of fruit for insects that feed on sweets and nectar, or a slice of sandwich meat for wasps and yellow jackets. Place these items a fair distance from where you are eating, relaxing or gathering. Install fans: A patio ceiling fan can blow away mosquitoes and flies relatively easily and you will likely enjoy a nice breeze on sultry days.

Use mulch wisely: Mulch will add to curb appeal, but having it too close to the house can present an ideal environment for roaches and ants to nest and find their way into a home. As mulch decomposes, it generates heat and a cozy spot for pests, including mice. Keep mulch 12 inches away from the home’s foundation and entertaining spaces, or use inorganic mulch. Keep patios clean: Sweep up and clean away any spilled foods and beverages promptly. Even a tiny nugget of food can attract ants and other insects. Use natural pest deterents: Citronella oils can drive away some insects, as can garlic and rosemary. Lavender, eucalyptus, marigolds, and other pungent aromas will naturally keep mosquitoes and other flying insects at bay. Some people also have luck with mintflavoured mouthwash misted on patios and furniture.

Address standing water: Mosquitoes and some other insects lay their eggs in standing water. Routinely drain areas where water collects, including gutters and downspouts Use light colours: According to HouseLogic, studies show that bugs see dark and bright colours more easily than light colours. Choose lighter shades of paint for outdoor areas and it may make these spaces less attractive to some bugs. Leave those spider webs: Many people yell “eek” at the sight of spiders and spider webs. But, those arachnids and their sticky webs can do a fine job of capturing many unwanted insects. Resist the temptation to tear down webs and shoo spiders away.

One of the significant challenges to maintaining a healthy ecosystem is dealing with the reduction of biodiversity due to native habitat loss and degradation. National and Provincial Parks, the Nature Conservancy, local conservation groups, and municipalities do an amazing job preserving native habitat. Still, as more and more land is lost to development, they could use some support. Birds and pollinators need wildlife corridors to support them, especially when they are raising their young and when they are migrating. The fragmented nature of parks and conservation areas means that there can be huge gaps in the continuity of the natural corridors necessary for migrating wildlife. This is where the rest of us come in. If each of us did our part to restore a bit of pesticide-free native plant habitat in our own yards, we could fill in the gaps in those wildlife corridors and give back to nature in return for all that nature gives to us. One of the foremost advocates for the native plant movement is Douglas Tallamy, an entomologist at the University of Delaware. Tallamy believes that the solution to the decline of pollinators and birds is to plant more native plants in populated areas to offset the loss of habitat and biodiversity. He outlines his ideas in his books, ‘Bringing Nature Home’ and ‘Nature’s Best Hope.’ Tallamy believes that we can create sanctuaries for birds and pollinators in our own yards. If enough of us did, we could help offset the loss of natural habitat that has contributed to the declining numbers of pollinators, birds, and wildlife. Tallamy is not alone in his beliefs. Whether it’s the Canadian Wildlife Federation encouraging us to garden with wildlife in mind, the David Suzuki Foundation supporting pollinators through their Butterflyway project, or Ontario Nature, the Farmer’s Almanac or our local Horticultural Society promoting the benefits of gardening with native plants, this is an idea whose time has come. Tallamy’s grassroots approach to conservation shows us a way to make a difference, one yard at a time. His ‘Homegrown National Park’ project can be done over a period of a few years, and it doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing process. Native plants are happy to exist alongside our favourite non-natives. He has a 10-step program available online, and the first step is to gradually ‘shrink the lawn’ and replace more of it with pesticide-free native trees, shrubs, and plants. Ideally, the remaining lawn would be full of dandelions and other native flowers in early spring to provide food for newly emerging bees. Native pollinators need native trees, shrubs, and plants. A loss of pollinators such as butterflies and native bees is a real threat to food security. There are several hundred species of native bees in Ontario, and many of them, such as bumblebees, are in serious decline. Before honeybees were imported from Europe, native bees did much of the hard work of pollinating plants in Canada. While we focus on the struggles of non-native honeybee colonies, there has been little focus on the plight of native bees, who still do a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of pollination. Honeybees are incredibly important to our food security, but given their struggles in recent years, it’s important to keep native bee populations and other types of pollinators healthy as well, and that means creating habitats and conditions that foster their survival.

Native plants support more than pollinators, though. Most of us know that the declining monarch butterfly population is largely due to habitat loss. Monarch caterpillars feed exclusively on plants in the milkweed family, and as they disappear, so do the monarchs. What is less well known is that birds, not just pollinators, rely on native plants for survival, either directly or indirectly. When native plants disappear, many insects disappear, creating a real problem for the birds that rely on insects as a food source. Butterflies and moths start as caterpillars that feast on our native trees, shrubs, and plants. Most birds, including seed-eating birds, require caterpillars to feed their young. For instance, a chickadee needs more than 6,000 caterpillars to raise a brood of

baby chickadees. A mature native oak tree can be host to hundreds of native caterpillars, including several different species, so it is a goldmine for both pollinators and birds trying to feed their young. A non-native ginkgo tree is beautiful and has its place, but it is not a host tree to native caterpillars and so is of little help to either pollinators or hard-working bird parents. (Unfortunately, the gypsy moth caterpillars that decimated our trees last summer are not on the menu for baby birds. They are not native caterpillars but rather European imports, and the tough bristles on gypsy moth caterpillars do not make for good ‘baby food’ for native birds! ) Many native trees, shrubs, and plants also provide spring blossoms for pollinators and berries or nuts and seeds for both migrating birds and overwintering birds. They also provide nesting sites, and in many cases shelter, from winter storms for overwintering birds. Migratory native birds also need native trees and shrubs to fuel their long journeys to warmer climates in the fall. Native berries are loaded with fats along with sugar, making them valuable fuel for a long journey. Most berries on non-native trees and shrubs have a high sugar content but a very low-fat content. If you’re going to run a marathon, it makes sense to load up on power bars rather than sugar pops, and for the same reason, it makes sense to plant native trees and shrubs for migratory birds whenever possible. What makes this easy is that native tree species such as sugar maples and native red maples, red or white oaks, white spruce, white pine, native birch and native cedar trees are also beautiful, as are native shrubs and plants. A bit of online searching will find lists of native species and sources where you can find them. Many of your favourite nurseries carry a wealth of native species.

And, you don’t have to do it all at once! Think of it as a five-year plan to gradually shrink your lawn and create a mini wildlife reserve in your yard. Start with a few native plants or a native tree or shrub, add a few more native plants and shrubs the following year, and so on. With every trip to a plant nursery, with every packet of seeds you buy, consider purchasing native species and planting them alongside your existing plants or even create a new native plant garden in your yard. Most of us have spent happy hours sitting or walking under trees alive with birds or enjoying butterfly-filled gardens planted by past generations. It’s our turn to ‘pass it on’. Although the pandemic has pushed a pause button on everyone’s day-to-day activities, it has also given us time to reflect on future directions as well as the legacy we want to leave for our children, grandchildren, and generations far into the future. Many native trees can live for hundreds of years, and creating gardens of native trees, shrubs, and plants can have longlasting impacts that can echo down the generations. Given our pandemic restrictions, I can’t think of a better way to spend a summer than creating tiny wildlife sanctuaries in our yards. Our children and grandchildren will thank us! Go green with your lawn & garden Green is certainly a colour that’s synonymous with spring. Gardening enthusiasts can find a way to make spring even more green by embracing several eco-friendly gardening practices as they bring their lawns and gardens back to life in the months to come.

powered mowers. Planet Natural also notes that reel mowers snip grass like scissors, leaving finer trimmings that can serve as nourishing, weeddeterring mulch for yards. Water at the right times of day: Homeowners who water their lawns and gardens at the right time of day can help the planet and reduce their energy bills. As spring gradually gives way to summer, temperatures typically rise. Watering during the coolest times of the day means less water will be lost to evaporation, ensuring waterneedy soil will get all it needs to help lawns and gardens thrive. Early morning watering before the sun reaches its midday peak and/or evening watering as the sun is setting are typically great times to water lawns and gardens, rather than when temperatures are at their hottest.

Create a compost pile: Composting is an ecofriendly way to enrich lawns and gardens. Composting helps to conserve water because compost promotes moisture retention in soil, reducing homeowners’ need to water their lawns and gardens while also helping them to save money on their water bills. Composting also helps homeowners avoid the need to use potentially harmful chemical fertilizers because compost is a natural, slow release fertilizer. In addition, according to Canada’s Green Action Centre, compostable materials make up 40 percent of residential waste. So composting can dramatically reduce the amount of waste homeowners ultimately send to landfills.

Use a rain barrel: Rain barrels provide another great way to conserve water while tending to lawns and gardens. Rain barrels collect and store rain water from roofs and downspouts, keeping water from washing into sewage systems where it can’t be put to good use. Water collected in rain barrels can be used in various ways. Many homeowners can use water from rain barrels to water their lawns, gardens and houseplants, saving money on their water bills along the way. Spring gardening season provides a great opportunity for lawn and garden enthusiasts to embrace a variety of eco-friendly practices that can save them money and protect the planet.

Replace gas-powered mowers: Reel mowers may seem like relics from simpler times, but today’s reel mowers, while just as eco-friendly as their predecessors, are unlike those of yesteryear. According to the Planet Natural Research Center, an online resource for organic gardeners, gas-powered engines emit more than 10 times the hydrocarbons per amount of gas burned than auto engines. But, reel mowers are fuel-free and less expensive than gas-

Keep pests out of crawl spaces Crawl spaces tend to be no-go zones in many homes. With little room to maneuver and no heating or cooling, it’s no wonder people avoid crawl spaces. However, pests may see crawl spaces in a wholly different light. Rodents and insects that find their way into crawl spaces can do significant damage. Pests can destroy insulation, gnaw through wiring and air ducts, and damage a home’s wooden substructures. Though many homeowners may go months, if not years, between trips to their crawl spaces, periodic visits to inspect for the presence of pests can help uncover any issues before they escalate into significant problems. The discovery of pest problems in a crawl space can be unsettling. Some homeowners may wonder how long they’ve been hosting these uninvited guests, while others may wonder what they can do to evict them once and for all. Fortunately, homeowners can employ various strategies to keep pests from taking over their crawl spaces. • Seal cracks and openings. Pests may enter a crawl space through small cracks or gaps, much like cold or warm air can enter through similar cracks around windows and doors. Homeowners can apply caulk or foam insulation around cracks or openings in their crawl spaces. No crack is too small to seal, as small insects like termites and ants don’t need much room to maneuver their way into a home.

glass sales and installation glass railings & showers metal railings and stairs welding and machining stainless steel • general repair transportation

• Encapsulate the crawl space. Crawl spaces are dark and damp. Wet, humid conditions attract rodents and insects, increasing the risk of infestation. Encapsulation closes and secures a crawl space with a thick vapour barrier that lines the crawl space’s floor and walls. Vapour barriers can keep moisture from condensing on wood, making the area less likely to attract pests. • Run a dehumidifier in the crawl space. Dehumidifiers can help homeowners control moisture in a crawl space. Many companies that install vapour barriers recommend running dehumidifiers after a barrier has been installed.

R.R.2 165 Lakeshore Dr., Clarksburg, ON 519-599-7647 | @IG.TEMP.GLASS.METAL.CNC

• Examine the perimeter of your home, particularly the exterior walls. Periodic examinations of a home’s exterior may reveal brush that can make for ideal shelters for pests. Pests sheltering along the exterior walls of a home will eventually try to enter the home, likely through the crawl space. Remove piles of brush during routine walk-arounds of the home and trim any bushes or shrubs that may provide shelter to pests.

Senio Discou r n Availab ts le

• Keep an eye on the crawl space. Though crawl spaces can be difficult to access, homeowners should visit these spaces periodically. Inspections can help homeowners determine if dehumidifiers are still running and allow them to check for pests or other issues, such as cracks, that may be inviting unwanted guests into their homes.

They are proud to be carrying on the tradition of bringing magic to your gardens! Grey Heron Garden Centre offers a wide selection of plants, garden tools, and materials to create beautiful gardens and spaces - both outdoor and in. They have an incredibly knowledgeable team who can answer the tricky gardening questions and offer excellent products standing behind everything they sell.

Lockdowns have led many people to look at their physical surroundings and their home’s beauty, inside and out. Many people are re-discovering the magic of gardening or finding the time to revive spaces around their properties. At Grey Heron, you will find the perfect plants for your landscape and garden needs with their extensive inventory of annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, seeds, bulbs, shrubs, trees, and tropical plants.

When Chris was in his twenties, he worked for his aunts Bette and Doc at their landscaping company, Blue Heron in Muskoka. Through this job, he learned about horticulture, landscaping, and creating beautiful gardens. His aunts taught him from such a young age about the power, beauty, and wonder of getting your hands dirty and making great outdoor spaces.

Proper tools and supplies are a must for every garden lover. Grey Heron carries a wide range of tools, burlap, landscape fabric, fertilizers, soil, mulch, compost, chemicals, pots, planters, grass seed, birdseed, feeders, houses, and more. Grey Heron is more than just a garden centre. They have many beautiful and unique home décor items and accessories that will bring your indoors to life. Their experienced team is also proud to offer full-service landscaping and consultation.

Many years later, Chris started his own landscaping company, EcoCultures. He believes in including native, edible, and pollinator-attractant plants in gardens and wanted to share that passion with southern Georgian Bay communities. In August 2020, the couple made a giant leap and purchased Ormsby’s Garden Centre. It was the perfect fit for the passion Chris has for plants, gardens, and landscaping. The name “Grey Heron” represents their history and their future, making Grey County their forever-home, and Blue Heron the spark that started it all.

Gardens are a happy place, and they are an opportunity to connect with nature. When you create gardens, you do more than plant things in the ground. You offer new relationships between soils, pollinators, micro-organisms, and more. There is also something so wondrous about creating gardens. It’s something we love to share. We love the idea of turning a property or a garden space into something that brings joy and that indescribable feeling that a great garden fills you with.

Pet owners whose pets spend ample time in the car should brush up on some safety precautions to ensure the roadways are safe for all travellers including those covered in fur. Driving while distracted is a significant safety concern. Simply taking one’s eyes off the road for two seconds doubles the chances of being involved in a crash. It’s easy to see how pets can be a distraction on the road. Drivers should never allow their pets to sit on their laps or ride in vehicles unless they are restrained. Doing so puts all passengers, pets and humans alike, in danger. A ten pound dog that’s not restrained can generate 500 pounds of force in a crash. Pet owners can heed these safety guidelines to make trips with their pets less dangerous. • Recognize that airbags can cause injury. Airbags are designed to protect people, not pets. It’s always recommended that pets ride in the back seat or the storage area of an SUV in vehicles equipped with airbags. • Watch those windows. Although riding with their heads out of the car window is a quintessential image of dogs in car, such situations put dogs in danger. Fast-blowing debris or litter can injure the dog, and heavy airflow can damage the animal’s respiratory system, warn veterinarians. Dogs also may attempt to jump out.

• Invest in a restraint system. Vehicle restraint systems keep pets safe. Small dogs may benefit from being inside crates that are secured to the vehicle. Harnessing a pooch is another option, and many harnessess connect directly to seat belts. Dog gates and guards can be installed between the back seat and the storage bay area, which is great when traveling with multiple dogs. • Avoid truck beds. Pets should never be transported in the bed of pickup trucks. Dogs should only ride in pickup trucks with extended cabs that allow their owners to secure them in the backseat. Keeping passengers, including both people and pets, safe in vehicles is the responsibility of drivers.

Vehicle maintenance tasks drivers don’t want to overlook 707 River Rd W. Unit 11, Wasaga Beach

Savvy drivers recognize that maintenance is essential to keeping their vehicles running strong for years on end. Such maintenance ensures vehicles are safe to take out on the road, and basic upkeep also protects drivers’ financial investments in their cars and trucks.

705-984-4527 info@gtautoglassandtintinc.com www.gtautoglassandtintinc.com

Drivers who are not mechanically inclined tend to put their vehicles in the hands of a trusted mechanic to perform routine maintenance like oil changes. • Brake inspections: Brake inspections are best left to the professionals, who can check the thickness of brake pads and look for other indicators of excessive wear. The automotive resource Cars.com recommends having brakes inspected during routine tire rotations, which many automotive professionals suggest should be done every six months.

• Car wash: Carwashes might not be the first task drivers associate with vehicle maintenance, but they can prevent long-term damage to cars and trucks. Damage from bird droppings and road salt and ice melt products in the winter can damage a vehicle’s paint job and its undercarriage. Wash the car on your own, go through a professional car wash, or hire an auto detailing company to perform this maintenance at regular intervals and whenever you notice a significant buildup of dirt and grime on the car’s exterior.

1227 MOSLEY ST. WASAGA BEACH

705-429-4488

• Air filter: The air filter on a car or truck prevents debris, dirt, and other contaminants from getting into the engine. The auto insurance experts at Allstate® advise drivers to inspect their vehicle air filters once a year. Air filters in need of replacement may appear dirty, and reduced fuel economy, unusual engine sounds, and reduced horsepower are some other potential indicators that an air filters needs to be replaced. • Windshield wipers: Windshield wiper blades are easily overlooked, but various automotive experts recommend replacing wiper blades every six to 12 months. Old wiper blades won’t perform at peak capacity, dramatically reducing visibility during heavy rain and snowstorms. Vehicle maintenance is not exclusive to tending to what’s under the hood. Keeping a car running smoothly for years involves routine tasks that many drivers need to pay attention to.

Best sunset spots in South Georgian Bay Sunnier days are upon us and what a better way to take advantage of life on the bay than to view a beautiful sunset over the waterfront and escarpment. South Georgian Bay has some spectacular sunset-watching spots and we’ve highlighted four of our favourite places here. Please remember to follow public health guidelines and stay safe. Sunset Point Just like the name, Sunset Point is an excellent park to view sunsets. The area includes a rocky beach, grassy areas with trees, walking paths, a playground, an Inukshuk, washrooms, fishing areas, picnic benches, as well as ‘The Chipper’ (outdoor restaurant open seasonally). Sunset Point can be a beautiful spot to view a sunset with a silhouette of the Grain Terminals in the distance.

You will get a special email from us on your birthday (and some amazing offers from local businesses). It’s our way of saying ‘thanks for being you’ on the best day of the year!

Gliding over the water

ADVERTISE IN THE JULY ISSUE OF

GEORGIAN LIFE!

Paddleboarding is an increasingly popular recreational activity. Often seen as a relaxing way to spend a peaceful day on the water, paddleboarding might provide some hidden health benefits. The following are just a few potential health benefits of paddleboarding. • Stress reduction: Many paddleboarding enthusiasts acknowledge the soothing qualities of paddleboarding, and a 2016 study published in the academic journal Health & Place found that increased views of blue space, including lakes, can be linked to lower levels of psychological distress.

9,000 copies are printed every month and distributed in Wasaga Beach, Creemore, Stayner, Collingwood, Blue Mountain and Thornbury at over 60 locations.

• Exercise: While it might not be high-intensity exercise, paddleboarding is exercise and can provide an avenue for otherwise sedentary men, women and children to begin increasing their levels of physical activity. Muscles in legs get a workout when paddleboarding, as these muscles are tasked with holding the body steady. In the meantime, core abdominal muscles also get a workout as they work to maintain the body’s balance. And of course, muscles in the arms, back and shoulders are needed for paddling. While paddleboarding may not qualify as vigorous a cardiovascular or strengthtraining exercise, it does provide a lowimpact way for participants to engage muscles throughout their bodies.

1

APRIL 202

• Balance: Paddleboarding can be a relaxing activity, but those paddleboarders who are most relaxed are the ones with great balance. Fortunately, paddleboarding can help men, women and children improve their balance because it requires a stable core and strong legs. While novice paddleboarders might struggle to stay upright at first, in time they’re likely to notice their balance is improving.

MAY 2021

• Vitamin D: Human skin produces vitamin D in response to sunlight, which paddle boarders get plenty of. Vitamin D serves a host of functions in the body that can promote short and long term health. Vitamin D facilitates normal immune system function, which can help paddleboarders fight off disease and infection. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to a host ailments, including diabetes, as inadequate amounts of vitamin D can cause insulin resistance and possibly seasonal affective disorder.

ADOPT A SHELTER CAT MONTH June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month! To celebrate, we want to tell you about a few of our long-term residents who have been looking for homes since March. REMY Age: 2 years • Gender: Male Purr-sonality Profile: This ultra-handsome tuxedo boy is sooo ready to find a home of his own. He is as sweet and as gentle as they come, and did we mention that he is a sight for sore eyes?! This guy is FIV+, which just means that he requires one extra vet visit a year to make sure he is in tip-top shape. And, it gets better: his adoption fee is by donation! TIPPI Age: 8 • Gender: Female Purr-sonality Profile: The Tippster has really come out of her shell. She used to be shy, but now asks (in an obvious, loud manner) for pets and bum scratches. Although she has some hind-end weakness, she takes her daily meds like a champ and goes about her day like the tough cookie that she is. Because of her need for pain management medication, she is in our Special Paws program which means her adoption fee is only $25! Love usually doesn’t come cheap, but it does in Tippi’s case. PARKER Age: 6 • Gender: Female Purr-sonality Profile: A saucy tabby who knows that she wants. At a whopping 14 pounds, she’s a lot of cat to love. She’s a girl who loves attention on her own terms. We feel that. If you’re cat savvy, pretty Parker will breathe life into your home. Parker would do best in a home without tiny humans. Her adoption fee is $125.

Seasonal Allergies and Hearing Spring has arrived and summer is right around the corner. Many of us are looking forward to the warmer weather. The flowers are in bloom, the birds are singing, the days are longer; however, for many people this time of year also brings seasonal allergies. Sneezing, sniffling, and watery eyes are common symptoms of allergies. Similarly, our ears and our hearing can also be affected. Seasonal allergies, such as hay fever, are due to an increase in pollen levels. Our bodies treat pollen as a threat and in response we release histamine. Histamine can cause our Eustachian tube, which connects the ears and nose to the throat, to become inflamed. The inflammation can cause swelling which causes a pressure imbalance. This imbalance can give you a feeling of fullness in your ears, popping sounds, itchy ears and/or reduced hearing. Sounds may appear muffled or hard to distinguish. Clearing or ‘popping’ your ears will only provide temporary relief.

With a partially (of fully) blocked Eustachian tube, mucous can build-up. When this happens, a further decrease in hearing can occur. It will also increase the blocked and/or full feeling in the ears. In some cases, bacteria can enter the mucous or fluid which can lead to infection. Eustachian tube dysfunction brought on by allergies can also cause dizziness and balance issues. Often the sinuses feel occluded which can disrupt balance. Tinnitus, which is described as ringing or buzzing in the ears, can become louder when suffering from seasonal allergies and/or a blocked Eustachian tube. This small tube plays a large role in the normal functioning of the ear. Treating seasonal allergies and how your body responds to allergens, can reduce the impact on your ears and subsequently your hearing. Using nasal sprays, anti-histamine/decongestant medication as well as other treatments to reduce the congestion and inflammation of the Eustachian tube will help. It is important to discuss with your doctor or medical professional which treatment options are appropriate for you. If you are experiencing seasonal allergies and notice a change in hearing or other ear issues, contact an Audiologist for a hearing test. Submitted by: Curt Culford, M.Cl.Sc. Aud, Reg.
