Cleaning it up one piece at a time BRICK HOUSE FOLLOWS ALL HEALTH AND SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR COVID-19 WHEN INSPECTING A PROPERTY

There’s a new group in town! Bruce It Up and its volunteers meet at select hiking trails to pick up garbage and preserve our beautiful trails in Blue Mountain and surrounding area. This is a wonderful way to meet new people, be in nature, help our community stay clean, be active and have fun. Thank you so much volunteers for taking time out of your day to help our community, for wearing masks and remaining socially distant while helping out. Unfortunately their efforts have been put on pause due to the stay-at-home order but I’m sure as soon as they are able to get out there to Bruce It Up, (and clean it up), they will. Volunteers are needed and donations are greatly appreciated to support their cause. Like them on Facebook: Bruce It Up to stay informed of any events. Darcy MacLeod, Owner of Brick House Home Inspection Services is a Professional, Experienced Inspector with over 1000 home inspections under her “Tool Belt!” Purchasing a home can be very stressful. Our inspection reports are clear and concise, providing relevant information regarding any deficiencies noted during an inspection in order to help the client make “an educated purchasing decision.” Covid-19 has brought dramatic changes to the real estate market. Purchasers have found themselves in multiple offer situations and often purchase a home without having a home inspection. We suggest that the home buyer contact us for a “Post Purchase” home inspection upon possession. The client will gain valuable information on the current condition of the home and any urgent improvements that should be performed. Having recently completed the Carson Dunlop Weldon Commercial Building Inspection program, an Industrial, Commercial and Institutional Division has been added to the company. “We were absolutely delighted by the thoroughness of your home Inspection. The report was detailed but written in layman’s terms that were easy to understand. I would highly recommend your service to anyone needing a home inspection. Thanks so much. Now we can move into our new home with absolutely no worries.” - G.F., Collingwood ON

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN RENOVATING YOUR HOME So, you might ask, “where is the best place to put your money when renovating your home to get the best return on your investment?” Whether your objective is to renovate your home to increase the home’s value before putting it on the market or renovate it to live in it, often the same rules apply. Most people these days are looking for an open concept configuration in their homes. Be it the living room/dining room area or in a bigger home, maybe the living room/dining room and kitchen area, there is a trend toward open concept homes. When renovating, consider the possibility of removing supporting walls. While most people find the idea of taking down walls daunting, it is not always as complicated as one might think. An Engineer would need to be consulted, and a permit obtained, but the value to the house could be worth the investment.

Available For Seasonal Lease – Contact Us Today!

Another valuable investment would be to update or renovate your kitchen and bathrooms. Keep the kitchen simple and neutral with clean lines and preferably a natural stone or quartz on the backsplash and countertop. An island in the kitchen is a great addition and helps to define the space. If you have the space to extend the countertop further to create a seating area for family and friends to congregate, even better!

Call us for a complimentary house valuation and to find out how our unique preparation & marketing program will get your home sold in record time, at the highest amount of money and the least amount of stress for you!

The best and least expensive bang for your buck is simply to paint, which instantly updates your space. The colour trends in 2021 are leaning toward warmer neutrals such as “greige” which is a combination of grey and beige. A bright, light colour not only makes your home look clean and well cared for but also makes your space look much larger. Simple and clean is preferable to ornate. Let potential buyers see themselves putting their own stamp on a neutral background rather than wondering if they will fit into your vision. The fewer colours throughout your house, the better; if bold colour is a must, save it for an accent room or the library. As far as flooring is concerned, ideally, flooring should be consistent throughout the home except for perhaps the mudroom or foyer. Once again, it gives the perception of space and rooms that are larger than they actually are. Many older homes have inadequate basement heights, which makes the space virtually unusable. While increasing the ceiling height by lowering or “underpinning’ the basement can be daunting, the usable living space you gain could be well worth the time and investment. Suddenly you could have a teenage suite/hangout when your kids come home from university, if you’ll have them, or an in-law suite for your in-laws, if you’ll have them. At the very least, you could create a rental suite for extra income. Sorry, while pools have become much more popular since the pandemic, they are still more of an investment for your lifestyle than an investment in your home’s value. Not everybody wants a pool when they buy a new home, as with a pool comes additional responsibility, expenses, and work.

Ted Yoannou: In Your Corner Be Like Jack: Fireplace Installation, Problem Solving and the Art of Client Relationships How’s that for a title? When I was much younger, I read Robert Pirsig’s classic Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I probably understood about 25% of it back then. If I were to try again today, that percentage would drop even further unless there was a Netflix version, which is pretty much all my attention span can handle these days. However, my main takeaway from the book was the importance of understanding how things worked, looking after your responsibilities, living a life of quality and truth, following the natural order.

designed by Drobotdean - Freepik.com

Maintaining your motorcycle was a metaphor for different approaches to life. You could find it boring and foreign, leave it to others to deal with, and just get a new one at the first sign of a problem. Or you could understand its mechanics and inner workings, be proactive in recognizing warning signs, and meaningfully enjoy the process of caring for the bike over its long lifetime. Which brings me to our recent fireplace experience: back in early February, we had a new one installed. That evening while the fireplace was on, the glass exploded into our family room. Needless to say, it somewhat detracted from our enjoyment of the Leafs win over the Habs.

Only 15km away from Collingwood and 11km from Stayner

st 31

The person who sold us the unit and installed it (let’s call him Jack) was shocked. Jack had never seen this happen before. He came over right away and took all the necessary steps to remedy the problem. Still, he experienced frustrations in dealing with the corporate manufacturer (let’s call them the Evil Corporation or EC), who were not so quick to help.

St N

nd 32 St N

rd 33 St

It took another month until we had the replacement fireplace installed. The glass exploded again. The Leafs were in the middle of a losing streak. This wasn’t good.

N

St

y le os M

Jack was beside himself, concerned, apologetic, and doing all he could to convince EC to act quickly. I think he was more upset than we were. Getting to know Jack, you can tell that he enjoys his job, works long hours, and is very capable. He is on worksites every day, gets dirty, and leads his crew by example. He probably hates paperwork, emails, and corporate phone calls. They are out of his comfort zone, but they were all the things he needed to do to help us. Jack was in constant communication with us, and he kept on top of EC, urging them to rectify the situation as soon as possible. When I finally spoke with EC directly, they weren’t quick to apologize, offer an acceptable solution, or make things right. Ultimately, EC determined a problem with faulty glass installation at their production facility and provided us with an upgraded unit, which Jack has now just installed. Two days in, so far, so good, no more glass explosions. Jack left us with the message that this one should work great, but to call him right away if there any issues. I hope this bodes well for the Leafs and the upcoming playoffs. This experience reminded me of Pirsig’s old book and the natural principles governing work and client relationships.

RBC Dominion Securities Inc.

You know your goals best. We know wealth.

First, be good at what you do. Learn your job and take pride in it. Second, understand that mistakes and problems happen; they are inevitable. The true signs of a great business and a quality person are facing the problem and seeking to remedy it. Over the years, I’ve tried to live these principles and share them with the people in my office. Treat the case and our client like they were a close friend or family member. Keep them updated and answer their questions. Return phone calls and emails. Explain the process and speak in plain English, not legalese. Now instead, I’ve got a simpler way to convey this message: Just Be Like Jack.

BUSINESS PROFILE:

The Water Store Collingwood:

The best water in town

guaranteed!

Michael and Shari Morgan purchased The Water Store Collingwood in December 2019 from Steve and Isabel Lounds. They currently have seven highly skilled and knowledgeable employees dedicated to achieving excellent customer service and fantastic results, whether it’s by providing great-tasting water or water solutions for your home and office. Fortunately, Steve stayed as a consultant, and Isabel continues to work at The Water Store full time, offering continuity and familiar faces for their loyal customers. Michael and Shari are committed to their customers, making sure they feel 100% supported when making a significant purchase or having any issues. They stand behind all of the highest quality products they carry in-store. Do you need or want to improve the source water you’re currently getting from your municipal or well water? The Water Store provides installation, service, and maintenance of home and commercial water treatment equipment, ensuring your water is safe and potable, as well as enjoyable to drink. Their water treatment equipment is state-of-the-art, and they use the latest in water treatment techniques to ensure the best possible results. Whether your water problem is staining, terrible odour, discolouration, bacteria, or improving the operation of your dishwasher, hot water heater, or humidifier, The Water Store has the application that will solve your problem and ensure the maintenance of your valuable fixtures and appliances. They offer various products such as water softeners, chemicalfree iron and sulphur filters, reverse osmosis drinking water systems, ultraviolet (uv) disinfection systems, and tannin filters. Fill ‘er up! Suppose you are looking to buy great-tasting, incredibly clear, and pure reverse-osmosis drinking water for your home, cottage, or business. In that case, they have in-store water stations for self-serve and delivery customers. The Water Store uses Collingwood’s local municipal

source water and further purifies it by softening and putting it through their high volume reverse-osmosis system. This allows them to remove all the chemicals, micro-plastics, pharmaceuticals and other impurities. Then, before you dispense this great-tasting super-pure water into water jugs, it passes through an Ultra-Violet disinfection system to ensure the water is 100% bacteria-free. This water is a great value compared to the cost financially and environmentally of using single-use bottled water. Staff is always on hand to help you with your water purchase, whether it is to show you how to rinse and fill your water jugs or carry the water to your car for you. The Water Store carries healthy lifestyle products such as personal drinking bottles, hiking and camping purification systems (i.e. Grayl and Lifestraw, etc.), water coolers, and products for the DIY’ers who maintain their own water equipment.

We love being part of this community, and having our own business here makes it a great opportunity to meet more people. We both love to work directly with our customers and make sure that we put excellent service above all else. We put energy into everything we do. We are grateful for our customers who have stayed with us and are new to us, especially during this past year. Our staff has managed so well and put so much effort into everything required to keep our doors open through a pandemic. Helping resolve issues or providing people with the right solution for their needs makes this business enjoyable every day. Water is one of the most vital parts of life and health - we never want to take it for granted, and we want to make sure we share that passion with our community and customers. Be it municipal or well water; it is important to understand the water we use in our daily lives.

The Water Store Collingwood has put safety protocols in place to serve you better during this time, including drop-offs, curbside pickups, and their “drop bottles outside door” program. They are practicing enhanced cleaning of the store and bottles and social distancing in the store. If you choose the “drop bottles outside door” service, they’ll do all the work so you can relax in your car or grab some fresh air. Service and maintenance technicians are available for all your immediate needs.

It’s not a ball; it’s a bowl! The Stayner Lawn Bowling Club is one of the Ontario Lawn Bowling Association District 13 clubs, including Barrie, Collingwood, Midland, Muskoka, Orillia, and Stayner. Lawn bowling is an inexpensive, low-impact form of exercise and does not require special equipment: flat-soled shoes (running shoes) and a hat is all you need. There are no pre-defined teams, so you play when you are available. Play can be competitive as you choose with games (jitneys) on various days throughout the week and in-house tournaments, tournaments between clubs, and at a provincial level. Lawn bowling is on the list of new sports for the Summer Olympics. The game is easy to learn. It is similar to curling except that you play out in the fresh air on rinks of grass 12 feet wide by 100-120 feet long. You roll an oblong bowl that is weighted on one side, so it curves. Points are earned when your bowl is closest to the jack (white ball), which, unlike curling, can be moved by another bowl. So, although bowling is a simple game to learn, it takes some time to master, with many laughs along the way. After all, no one ever throws a bad bowl on purpose, and even the best players have off days.

How to level an uneven yard

GIVEAWAY!

We are giving away 5 x $50 gift cards (to local businesses) to anyone who brings us this ad and gets a mortgage through us!

Many things can cause a yard to be uneven. Drainage problems, leaky pipes beneath the grass, and pests can wreak havoc on a yard, resulting in uneven turf that can be both unsightly and unsafe. Homeowners should first figure out what’s causing the problem and make fixing that their initial task. Fixing uneven ground will only be a temporary fix if the leaks themselves are not addressed. Professional contractors might be necessary depending on what’s causing the problem. However, once the underlying issue has been addressed, many homeowners can handle the task of levelling an uneven yard on their own. Get the right tools and materials Levelling a yard may require various tools. Thatch will likely need to be removed from the lawn before it can be leveled out. Therefore you will need a thatch rake or dethatching machine to get this task started. Dethatching machines are generally necessary for very large lawns, which can be rented from home improvement retailers. A shovel, bow rake, and push broom are other tools you may need. Materials such as topsoil, compost, and sand will be necessary as well, and these are typically sold at local garden centers. Fill in areas beneath the grass Areas beneath the grass can be filled in with a mixture of sand, topsoil, and compost. Experts advise using two parts sand, two parts topsoil, and one part compost. Each of these components plays its role in restoring the yard to total health. Sand helps the ground stay level, while the topsoil and compost provide the grass with valuable nutrients. If the low spots are not especially deep, this mixture can be applied without removing the grass. However, before filling in holes when addressing spots that are deeper than two or three inches, remove the grass then place it back once the hole has been filled. To dig up the grass, put the blade of the shovel at the outside of the low spot before sliding it under about two or three inches, so you do not upset the grass roots. Spread the top dressing Once the holes have been filled, and the grass has been placed back on the ground (if it was removed), spread the top dressing mix with a shovel. The mix should be spread evenly with the back of the bow rake at a depth of no more than half an inch. Make sure the mix is worked into the low spots and that it’s not completely covering the grass, as that will suffocate the lawn. If necessary, use the push broom to work the mix into the soil.

Age-appropriate chores for kids Few people look forward to chores around the house. Though adults may not be excited by the prospect of mopping the kitchen floor or folding the laundry, their lack of enthusiasm no doubt pales in comparison to their children’s opinion of chores.

away. Stick to groceries that can be dropped without breaking or spilling, which rules out jars of pasta sauce or milk and juice. Children in this age group also can start to dress themselves, but parents should offer help when necessary, so kids do not become discouraged.

Chores can play a vital role in kids’ development. Children can learn time management skills by doing their chores, which also can teach them how to balance work and playtime. Kids can apply those lessons throughout their childhood and into adulthood. Giving kids chores also benefits them by teaching them to accept responsibility within the family and providing them with an opportunity to be successful.

4 TO 5 YEAR-OLDS Four and 5 year-olds can help feed pets and make their beds. Children in this age group can help clear the table after meals, but parents should be sure to take sharp objects like knives to the sink before kids begin helping.

Parents may have a long to-do list concerning chores around the house, and it can be tempting to share that workload with youngsters. However, an essential factor to consider is picking age-appropriate chores. Children given chores more suited for older youngsters may fail at completing those tasks. Such failure may set a negative precedent that adversely affects kids’ self-esteem and makes them reluctant to do their chores in the future. Picking an ageappropriate chore for a child will increase their likelihood of success, which can boost their confidence and make them more likely to approach their chores with enthusiasm as they navigate their way through childhood and into adolescence. Here are some age-based chore suggestions for parents as they look to give their children more responsibility around the house: 2 TO 3 YEAR-OLDS Children in this age group can put their toys away and help put groceries

6 TO 7 YEAR-OLDS This is a good age for children to begin taking on more complicated chores, including wiping tables and counters, putting laundry away, and sweeping floors. 7 TO 9 YEAR-OLDS Children in this age group can help their parents prepare meals and even pack their lunch for school. The responsibility of loading and unloading the dishwasher can be given to kids between seven and nine. 10 TO 11 YEAR-OLDS More difficult tasks like changing the sheets on their beds, cleaning kitchens and bathrooms, and doing yard work are appropriate for kids in this age group. 12 YEARS-OLD AND OLDER Children 12 and older can help take care of younger siblings and pitch in with grocery shopping and running errands. Chores play a vital role as children grow up and mature. Assigning ageappropriate chores is important as parents look to help their children develop into responsible adolescents.

Create a teen-friendly space at home Teenagers are busier than ever before. But even the most active teens need places to unwind and relax with friends. Many parents aspire to create that type of environment in their homes but don’t know where to begin. Having teens close by and interacting with them on a regular basis can benefit families. Parents who want to keep teens nearby can create hangout spaces at home that make it easy for teens to feel comfortable with their friends. These “teen caves” can be private but permit supervision when necessary. With a few modifications, it’s possible to transform a room in a home into a teen-friendly hangout space. Talk to your children Involve teens in the process of renovating a home to create a spot in which they would like to hang out. Talk about elements they would like to see in the space, whether it be a particular design style, technology, or activity. Establish a shared budget Paint is inexpensive and can transform just about any room in a single afternoon. If the room being renovated is the teen’s bedroom, allow them to choose the colour palette and other accents. Even if it isn’t to your taste, he or she will be proud of the results and may want to share it with friends. Have a snack station Some teenagers always seem hungry, and hanging out with friends while enjoying food is a popular pastime. When renovating a room into a teen cave, find a way to make food a focus. Install a mini-refrigerator and non-alcoholic bar where kids can serve snacks to friends. Think about a space you would like as an adult and modify it to accommodate teenagers.

Add more seating Having friends over means having enough seating to handle a small crowd. Beanbags, cushioned benches, a daybed, modular seating, and more can ensure everyone has a place to sit. Make a private outdoor spot Teen spaces do not need to be restricted to the indoors. An outdoor escape zone that includes comfortable seating in a private area - particularly a place that can also be enjoyed into the evening - will be a coveted spot.

Specialty cleaners of rugs and upholstery

Invest in “indestructible” materials Teenagers are bound to make messes and having other people over means contending with a certain measure of damage. Design the space with indoor-outdoor carpeting, water-resistant fabrics, distressed wood, and other durable materials. Adolescents are always looking for spaces to gather without overbearing adult interference. Homeowners can create such spaces for their children in their own homes.

Pallet projects can be a handy hobby In recent years, the trend of upcycling, or transforming unneeded or unwanted materials into new items or products, has become more popular. Unlike recycling, which is taking consumer materials like plastic, paper, metal, and glass and breaking them down so base materials can be remade into new, lower-quality consumer products, upcycling produces higher quality items than the original materials. Wood pallet projects are an excellent example of upcycling. Such projects involve taking wood pallets, which tend to be used to stack, move and store stock, and turning them into amazing wood products. Often free for the taking, pallet wood has become a popular building material for doit-yourselfers. This rustic wood already has an aged look and decorative appeal. Pallets are often made from leftover wood, and using them anew is an eco-friendly endeavor that can add flair to any project. The following are just a handful of pallet project ideas: Christmas trees: Start thinking ahead to the holiday season. Cut pallet planks into sizes that incrementally get larger and attach to form a triangular Christmas tree shape. Decorate with paint or other accents, and don’t forget to place a star on top. Pallet planter: Make a planter box as big or as small as you like to grow flowers, vegetables or herbs. A narrow planter also can be hung on a wall to add flair to spaces indoors or outside. Swing chair: A pallet, a supportive back, and some cushions can be used to make a swing that is fastened to the ceiling of a porch or even a tree. Wine rack: Turn pallet wood into a wine rack that also has a space to store wine glasses below it. Outdoor table: Top a disused table with pallet boards nailed or screwed to the top. Stain or clear coat them, and the result is a brand new table for gardening use or outdoor entertaining. Platform bed: Pallets can be sanded, painted, and placed to form the base of a platform bed. Utilize more pallets to serve as a headboard attached to the wall or bed frame. Bench: Make a pallet bench that can be crafted child- or adult-sized. Use it inside the house or outdoors on a patio. Garbage container: Instead of generic plastic garbage pails, make a pallet kitchen garbage container that has rustic appeal. Backsplash: Give a kitchen some rustic appeal with a pallet backsplash. Cut boards into desired lengths and stagger on the wall. Leave the wood raw or seal it for protection against moisture. Pallet wood can be transformed into many different projects, helping doit-yourselfers stay busy at minimal cost. Go online to search for plans for building an array of pallet projects.

Display a diploma with pride

75 45th St. S., Wasaga Beach, ON

Graduation day is one of the proudest moments in students’ academic careers. Diplomas are symbolic of hours spent honing skills and working on assignments and, ultimately, success in the classroom. Highschool diplomas represent an opportunity to go on to higher learning or a trade, while college degrees indicate young people are ready to begin their professional lives.

Many graduates are excited about the prospect of receiving their diplomas. Once in hand, the document can be put on display. Don't just choose a simple diploma frame and place it in an obscure corner. The following are some unique ways to showcase diplomas at home or at work.

CTWasagaBeach

FRAMING One of the classic ways to display a diploma is in a frame. Many businesses offer customized framing where the frame material and the matting can be chosen. Some grads may want to include a photograph of the school or a picture of the graduate above the diploma. You may also want to select a frame and mat that coordinates with school colours. CREATE A SHADOW BOX Consider displaying the diploma with other mementos from school. A shadow box is a large, deep display frame that can house thicker items than photographs or papers. Items such as a graduation tassel, medal or other award, a varsity jacket patch, or a program from a school performance or awards ceremony can be placed in the shadow box. CREATE A PHOTO WALL Display the diploma among other framed photos from school activities. This can elicit a trip down memory lane every time the wall is viewed. Some families may want to display their diplomas together, especially if multiple family members attended the same school. MAKE A WORK OF ART Various online art vendors can turn the diploma into different works of art. For example, engravers can laser engrave the diploma onto a wooden plaque. Then the diploma can be displayed in one location and the wood plaque in another.

BUSINESS PROFILE:

. C IN E R T N E C M U U C A V BLUE MOUNTAIN

Meghan and her husband Andrew Berofsky purchased Blue Mountain Vacuum Centre Inc. in May 2011, marking this month as their 10th anniversary. They bought the business from a couple who had owned the business for over 30 years, but it was time for retirement. While neither of them imagined working in a vacuum business, they were looking for a reason to move to Collingwood while visiting Meghan’s parents over the years and fell in love with the community and everything it has to offer. They wanted to find a way to leave the city’s hustle and bustle and raise a family in Collingwood. Her mom noticed the business was for sale, and the couple jumped on the opportunity.

Blue Mountain Vacuum Centre Inc. sells many types of vacuums for different needs of cleaning. From residential machines (canister vacuums, upright vacuums, and central vacuums) to commercial machines (canister vacuums, backpack, and upright vacuums, floor scrubbers, dry/wet vacuums, and mechanical sweepers) and even niche vacuums for asbestos removal, renovations, etc. And, of course, they sell all of the necessary supplies such as vacuum bags, belts, and filters to cleaners, PPE, and laundry detergent (and so much more). Now through the convenience of their safe and secure on-line store www.bluemountainvacuum.ca they can ship Canada-wide. It’s obvious that Meghan and Andrew are dedicated to their business, taking pride in their work, stand behind their products, warranty what they sell, and appreciate your business. In 10 years, I bought a business, got married, had two wonderful kids, bought my forever home, and purchased an income property. I’m most proud of being a good mom and role model for my children. I want to teach them that you can succeed at anything you want if you are willing to put the work into it. We love that people can visit us and still shop downtown or grab a drink from one of the many outstanding restaurants and bars within walking distance of our store. Having great access for our customers makes shopping an easy outing and also promotes the downtown business community. Keeping everything as local as we can is a huge deal for us and something we believe in.

Blue Mountain Vacuum Centre Inc. is “your one-stop vac shop” located in the beautiful downtown heritage district of Collingwood. They sell and repair vacuums only. That is their specialty; they don’t sell phones, beds, or sewing machines. Meghan and Andrew have incredible staff, Jerry and Carol, who are always ready to jump in and learn something new to help their customers. Many of their suppliers offer training opportunities several times a year and are always eager to participate. They all take pride in their work, striving to provide fast and economical repairs to residential and commercial vacuums, as well as central vacuum systems. If it is a new vacuum you are looking for, they will assess your needs to choose the correct vacuum cleaner that will fit your budget. Customers often come into the store that have bought a vacuum on-line or in a big box store based on limited information and hate it. At Blue Mountain Vacuum, you have the opportunity to try floor models and establish the best options to suit your lifestyle, ensuring you are happy with your purchase today, tomorrow, and 10 years from now.

Enjoy safe backyard barbecues this summer Backyard barbecues are synonymous with warm weather. And why wouldn’t they be? Grilling over an open flame when the weather is warm embodies the relaxing spirit of spring and summer, prompting many people to leave their oven ranges behind in favour of charcoal and gas grills. As relaxing as backyard barbecues can be, they can quickly take a turn for the worse if cooks don’t emphasize safety when grilling out. The following are some steps you can take to ensure their backyard barbecues are safe. • Recognize that gas grills pose a threat as well. It’s easy to assume gas grills don’t pose as significant a threat as charcoal grills, which produce soaring flames once the charcoal is lit. But, no grill is completely safe, and cooks must emphasize safety whether they’re using gas grills, charcoal grills, or smokers. • Only use grills outdoors. Grills should never be used indoors. Even if rain unexpectedly arrives during a backyard barbecue, keep the grill outside. If unexpected rain is accompanied by lightning and thunder, extinguish the fire in the grill and go indoors. • Place the grill in a safe location. Grills should be placed well away from the home. Avoid locating grills near deck railings or beneath eaves and overhanging branches. Cut overgrown branches before lighting a grill fire if they are in close proximity to the grill. • Keep your grill clean. The buildup of grease and fat, both on the grill grate and in trays below the grill, increases the risk of fire. Clean the grill routinely. • Properly light the grill. Lighting gas and charcoal grills requires caution. Before lighting a gas grill, make sure the lid is open. If you must use starter fluid to light a charcoal grill, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add any fluids to the fire after it has been lit. • Do not leave a grill unattended. Cooks should never leave a lit grill alone. If you must leave the grill, only do so if another adult can stand in your stead. Lit grills pose a threat to children and pets, and unattended grills can be blown over by gusts of wind or tipped by wild animals, such as squirrels. Standing by a lit grill at all times can protect against such accidents and injuries.

Outdoor entertaining areas are popular among homeowners, and firepits are among the most sought-after additions to such spaces. Various styles are available to homeowners who want to add firepits to their backyards. Choosing the right type may come down to budget, yard space available, or even personal preference. • Wood firepit: As their name suggests, wood firepits burn wood, which may appeal to homeowners who already have wood-burning fireplaces inside their homes. Because they don’t require homeowners to tap into gas lines, wood firepits are generally easy to set up and install. Many homeowners prefer the aesthetic appeal of crackling wood and flames that are synonymous with wood firepits.

• Gas firepit: Gas firepits are touted for their convenience, as they don’t require homeowners to carry wood and build fires. Upon being connected to a gas source, gas firepits provide fire at the click of a switch. Gas firepits are also appreciated for their safety, as there is little or no risk that flames from gas firepits will grow too large and become difficult to control.

• Gas fire tables: Gas fire tables might be ideal for those homeowners whose sense of decor favours more modern looks. Gas fire tables come in various shapes and sizes, and, like gas firepits, there’s no need to struggle with lighting a fire or carrying firewood. • Tabletop firepits: Homeowners, condominium or apartment dwellers with limited backyard space may want to consider the convenience of tabletop firepits. Restaurants may use tabletop firepits in their outdoor seating areas because they provide warmth and ambiance without taking up much space. Tabletop firepits fueled by gas will not need to be connected to a gas source, which may appeal to consumers who want something simple as well as small. • Fire urns: While they might not technically qualify as firepits, fire urns provide a similar effect as firepits. Fire urns are typically gas-powered and may be an ideal choice for homeowners who are looking for a unique, awe-inspiring feature for their outdoor entertaining areas.

Jennifer K Huggins has always been drawn to the Hospitality and Service Industry, enjoying the hustle and bustle of running an event, a themed night, or a busy night in a restaurant. After graduating from Hospitality Management, she was presented with one of the most fantastic opportunities in joining The Walt Disney World Corp. International Program. Here, Jennifer went through the best Hospitality and Guest Service program in the world and worked for the company both in Orlando on land and at sea on the Disney Cruise Line. From there, her career took off in Hospitality Management and Event Planning industries working for various companies such as Clublink, The Carlu, Blue Mountain Resorts, and Scandinave Spa. Jennifer and her family moved from Mississauga to Collingwood in 2005. After spending many summers in the area, she knew that it would be a wonderful place to raise a family; her two boys are now ages ten and thirteen. “As you could imagine working in the Hospitality Industry, you work a lot of weekends. In 2017, after missing out on another friend’s wedding, I realized that I was done missing out on my kids, family, and important events in my life. In 2018, I decided it was time to be more present for my family and resigned from my senior management position. Clearly, the universe knew more than I did, in May 2018 my husband was diagnosed with cancer, and we as a family were about to go on a journey that we were not prepared for, and one that needed my full-time attention.” Following her husband’s treatments, (he is cancer-free for two years now) a close family friend was in the process of dissolving her cleaning company, and Jennifer jumped at the opportunity. This business would allow her to stop working weekends, nights, and holidays to spend more time with her family. In February 2019, she took ownership of Clearview Cleaners and began growing the business with client’s and employing a team of five professional residential cleaners. They pride themselves on being able to offer sustainable employment to local residents. “Clients hire us to fill a need in their home, and we strive to meet their expectations. We like to build personal relationships with our clients and find ways to go above and beyond to make their days a little more stress-free and seamless. Residential cleaning services are a part of the hospitality sector; our goal is to provide consistent, reliable service daily.” Clearview Cleaners offers weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, and occasional residential cleaning from Stayner to Meaford and all areas in between.

Variables to consider when choosing a media room The term "home theatre" once made homeowners who love movies and sports dream of the day when they could dedicate a large area in their home to watching the big game or their favourite films. Such rooms are now widely referred to as "media rooms." Though the terminology may have changed, media rooms are not all that different from home theatres. Before choosing an area of their home as their designated media room, homeowners must consider a host of variables to ensure they get as much out of the room as possible.

Location and shape

Of course, the location of the room is of the utmost importance. Media rooms tend to be more social settings than traditional home theatres, which were often designed to be isolated from the rest of the home so noise and natural light did not adversely affect the film-watching experience. Homeowners may not want their media rooms to be in high traffic areas of their homes, but they need not be entirely secluded, either. The shape of a room should be considered before designating it as the media room. In general, square rooms are not ideal, as such rooms can produce harmonic distortions. A rectangular room likely won't have such distortions, especially when homeowners place their screens and primary speakers on short walls. Homeowners must not downplay the importance of sound, as media rooms, unlike traditional home theatres, may be used for listening to music just as much as they are for watching films or sports. Viewers may not recognize distortions when watching something, but homeowners may notice these abnormalities when listening to music.

Windows

Media rooms are multi-purpose rooms, so homeowners do not need to remove rooms with windows from consideration. Windows are hard surfaces that can reflect sound and distort audio, and the light that gets in through windows can produce reflections on the viewing surface. Each of those factors can adversely affect your listening and viewing experience. A room with windows can still make for a good media room, but you may want to invest in some blackout curtains to mitigate some of the disadvantages of having windows in the room.

Wall Colours

The colours of the room's walls are another variable homeowners will have to consider. Homeowners will not want to host guests for the big game in rooms with darkened walls, as that can create a dreary atmosphere and potentially make people tired. But especially bright colours will reflect light and adversely affect the viewing experience. Neutral colours should not affect the screen's colours, making them the ideal colour choice for media room walls.

BUSINESS PROFILE:

every shopper, donor and volunteer

is helping to fulfill Habitat’s mission

Habitat for Humanity helps low-income families build and buy simple, decent quality affordable homes through a no-interest mortgage with payments set at 25 percent of their gross income. This solution helps provide available housing for families in need. It also enables low-income families to build assets, reduce their dependence on other forms of social assistance, give children stability and break the cycle of poverty. Every Canadian family deserves a safe, decent and affordable place to call home. Habitat for Humanity’s goal is to make that dream a reality. Homeownership is about more than just building equity, as it can instill a family with a renewed sense of confidence and pride. Children have become happier and more outgoing, leading to improved grades and better health. Parents have used their newly discovered sense of accomplishment to return to school, learn a new trade, or upgrade their job skills. The impact is immediate; the effects everlasting. Many partner families are so moved and thankful for the opportunity to better their lives that they continue to contribute to their communities by helping others break free of the cycle of poverty. From becoming a partner family to the day they pay off their mortgage, Habitat partner families are given the support and guidance they need to ensure they succeed. By supporting Habitat for Humanity, you are not just providing for the bricks and mortar to build a house; you’re giving local families the hand up they need to build a better life. Habitat for Humanity has been in operation in the Georgian Triangle since 2002. It began when a dedicated group of local community residents felt strongly that lower-income families

were being left behind/outpriced in the housing market and would never achieve the strength and stability that affordable homeownership brings to a family. Dedicated volunteers and board members kept the organization running until it had grown to the point of needing an Executive Director. Joy Fleury joined Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay as the ED in March 2014. The mission of Habitat for Humanity is more relevant now than ever before. This pandemic has put a spotlight on the critical need for affordable housing at every part of the continuum. It also brought a massive influx of homebuyers to the area, crowding the market, driving house prices out of reach, and making rentals (affordable or otherwise) scarce. Families can no longer afford to live in the area where they work - the same folks that have been essential throughout the pandemic - grocery store clerks, PSWs, ECEs, and delivery drivers, to name a few - are now struggling to keep a roof over their heads.

Our vision is a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. The planning is underway for the building of a home in Stayner for 2021. We need volunteers to help with construction, food committee, volunteer committee, and swinging a hammer or a paintbrush on site. We would love to have you!”

Safely share the roads with motorcycles Motorcycle accidents can be deadly. While some people may be quick to blame rider error as the leading cause of multiplevehicle accidents, the failure of motorists to detect and recognize motorcycles in traffic also contributes heavily to motorcycle accidents. Nearly two-thirds of accidents involving motorcycles are caused by the other vehicle violating the motorcycle’s right of way. Drivers must respect motorcycle riders’ rights, and riders would be wise to acknowledge their own vulnerabilities to cars and trucks. Motorists can heed the following tips to reduce their risk of being involved in accidents with motorcycles. • Carefully check vehicle mirrors before changing lanes, as motorcycles are often obscured behind larger automobiles. • Drivers should be on even higher alert at intersections and turns, actively looking for motorcycles. • Allow for greater passing distance when passing a motorcycle. The gust of wind that results as cars accelerate and pass motorcycles could cause the bike to become unstable. Signal all intentions to pass and allow several car lengths before returning to the lane.

707 River Rd W. Unit 11, Wasaga Beach 705-984-4527 info@gtautoglassandtintinc.com www.gtautoglassandtintinc.com

• Give motorcycles the entire lane. It is not alright to pass a motorcycle in the same lane even though they take up less room. Many bikers ride tandem in lanes for this reason. • Drivers driving behind bikes should increase the distance between the back of the motorcycle and their vehicle. Increasing this safety cushion makes drivers more able to react to the unexpected.

WE ARE OPEN BY APPOINTMENT ONLY

• Be mindful of changes in the weather. Driving in the rain or other adverse conditions can be challenging for cars and trucks, but inclement weather is even more hazardous for bikers. Allow for a little extra breathing room and drive slowly when sharing slick roads with motorcycles. • Check blind spots often, as motorcycles can be hard to spot, especially when attempting to pass other vehicles.

Brakes | Exhaust

• Exercise extra caution at night, when riding can be especially treacherous for motorcycle riders. Cars should refrain from passing and avoid using their high beams unless it’s necessary.

Modern head protection Motorcycle helmets protect one of the most important parts of the body that can be injured in motorcycle accidents. Seemingly a simple piece of equipment, helmets are continually evolving to prevent injuries. Some new technologies include using airbag systems with helmet designs to provide neck and spinal protection immediately on impact. Sensors built into the helmets can record speeds and inflate if a crash seems imminent. Wear leather Apart from looking the biker part, there are other advantages to wearing leather when riding. Leather is resistant to abrasion, which protects riders against cuts. Leather also is good at insulating, so riders can stay comfortable when the wind is chilly. In addition to leather jackets and pants, leather gloves and boots are suggested.

PLEASE DON’T TEXT & DRIVE Because it only takes a second to change a life forever… Protect your own life and the lives of others by making a pledge to never text or talk on the phone while driving. If you are in the car with a distracted driver, let them know it bothers you and ask them to drive phone-free. A message from your friends at Georgian Life Media Inc.

Bikes that talk Vehicle-to-vehicle communications technology can help reduce motorcycle accidents and injuries. Using short-range Wi-Fi-based communication, motorcycles can track vehicles in the vicinity; assess speed, braking, and other elements; and alert riders with enough time to avoid a crash. The hardware produced by Autotalks and Bosch is scheduled to be tested on Ducati motorcycles. Bosch’s initial research suggests it could prevent one-third of all motorcycle accidents in Germany, where the company is headquartered and will conduct the study. Self-driving vehicles People may wonder just what self-driving cars will have to do with motorcycle safety, but putting driving into the virtual hands of a computer can eliminate driver error. That means cars will be able to sense an oncoming bike and assess its speed. Biker deaths have waned thanks to safety features like blind-spot monitoring. Self-driving cars can bring accident numbers down even more because they will eliminate distracted drivers, impaired drivers and factors that comprise driver error. Autonomous features Although self-driving motorcycles are unlikely to be available anytime soon, certain features that can map the road ahead and warn of terrain or curves may be in the works. BMW envisions systems that can do just this, warning bikers to slow down or make navigation changes. Safety is a consideration anytime bikers decide to go for a ride. Technology can help bikers reduce their risk of accident or injury.

How to protect your car from sun damage Nature can be harsh on vehicles. Protecting automobiles from the elements should be a priority for drivers, especially those who do not park their cars and trucks in garages. The sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause your vehicle’s paint to peel and fade over time. UV rays break down the molecules in the paint and make it appear dull. The company says red paint is particularly susceptible because red paint molecules deteriorate faster in the sun than other paint colours. Leaving a vehicle exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time increases the risk of damage to its interior and exterior. It’s important that car and truck owners recognize this so they can mitigate the potential problems sun and heat may cause. In a perfect world, all vehicle owners would be able to park their cars and trucks in garages. In such a world, automobiles would not be vulnerable to sun, storms, and other natural elements that, over time, can contribute to wear and tear. But, many drivers cannot or choose not to park their cars in garages. Some are content to let their vehicles brave the elements, while others look for ways to protect their cars and trucks as much as possible. Drivers who count themselves among the latter group can take these simple steps to protect their cars and trucks from whatever mother nature has in store for them. Park in the shade. Parking in the shade can protect both the interior and exterior of a vehicle. Shaded areas protect upholstery and dashboards inside the car from sun-induced fading while also limiting the damage sun can cause to exterior paint. Faded paint may hurt the resale value, prompting prospective buyers to walk away or at least wonder if a vehicle with a faded exterior was well maintained. Wash and wax. Washing and waxing a vehicle helps minimize the inevitable damage regardless of where drivers park their cars. Dirt and debris litter roadways and over time cars can collect a large amount of these unwanted stowaways. If dirt and debris are not removed, they can cause long-term damage to vehicle exteriors. Washing and waxing a car can ensure its exterior looks good and reduce the likelihood of rust and other corrosion from occurring. Don’t write off bird droppings. Some drivers, especially those who do not park their cars and trucks in garages, may write off bird droppings as an annoying yet harmless side effect of vehicle ownership. However, bird droppings are acidic and can cause permanent damage to vehicle paint if left to their unsightly devices. Tree sap is an equally formidable foe, potentially causing scratching because it can be challenging to remove without spreading. Specially formulated sprays can help drivers remove bird droppings and sap from their vehicles. Use a car cover. Drivers who have garages but use them to store things other than their vehicles can use car covers when parking their cars in their driveways. Covers protect vehicles from the elements and can be quickly and easily removed. Interior vehicle air temperatures have been recorded well in excess of 145 F. Interior surfaces exposed to direct sunlight have been recorded at temperatures in excess of 195 F. To prevent potential sun-related damage to your vehicle's interior, take these precautions. Avoid direct sunlight. Park in the shade as much as possible. Crack a window. If it is safe to do so, lower interior air temperature and equalize air pressure by opening up car windows a little. Use a windshield protector. Reflect sunlight away and keep the vehicle cool with a windshield sun protector that unfolds and slides into place. Install seat covers. Seat covers can protect leather and fabric upholstery. A leather conditioner can help prevent cracks and tears from sunlight and heat.

BUSINESS PROFILE:

CAITHKIN TREATMENT FOSTER HOMES

Helping children“ children“ be the best they can be” be”

Caithkin Treatment Foster Homes is a Ministry licensed residential care program providing therapeutic residential placements for vulnerable youth and young adults. Residential placements for individuals are referred to Caithkin by Child Welfare Agencies and Mental Health Agencies in Ontario. Ainslie Tomlinson and Leslie Listro co-founded Caithkin Treatment Foster Homes in Wasaga Beach in May 2001. They employ a dedicated group of professionals committed to educating and supporting their foster families, including 14 Clinical and Administrative Staff, 30 Treatment Support Workers, and 9 Volunteer Drivers. While their head office is in Wasaga Beach, they currently have 35 foster homes located in Wasaga Beach, Collingwood, Barrie, Elmvale, Orr Lake, Angus, Pickering, Whitby, and Brampton. Caithkin evolved from Ainslie’s belief that foster parents are the most critical foster care team members, providing therapeutic care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for some of our society’s most vulnerable members. An organization such as Caithkin requires a passion for helping children be the best they can be. But, it must also meet and abide by the stringent administrative requirements from the Ministry of Children Community and Social Services, where Leslie’s strengths lie. So with a melding of their gifts and talents, Caithkin Treatment Foster Homes became a reality.

Parenting a foster child in many ways is no different than caring for a biological child. Still, there are additional systemic demands: they also participate in regular meetings with agency staff, meeting with child support workers, and supporting specialized individual needs. Caithkin believes that these dedicated families should be recognized as the professionals they are regardless of whether there is a formal “educational background.” Without their contributions to help all members of a treatment

team understand the challenges that each child faces, Caithkin’s primary goal will not be achieved. Foster families are supported by the clinical team, whose responsibilities include ensuring that

proposed placements “match” the family’s inner workings with whom they are placed and liaise with the placing agency, schools, and community resources on families’ behalf. Support to each home also includes a 24/7/365 emergency line, creative and skilled intervention of their Treatment Support Workers when deemed appropriate, and if appropriate, regular respite. Caithkin relies on committed volunteers who assist with the many transportation demands that accompany visits with biological family, medical and mental health professionals, and special school programming. The administrative staff ensures that they meet, at all times, the documentary requirements of Caithkin’s license. Caithkin has received incredible support from organizations that have assisted with employment opportunities for youth, recreational and leisure opportunities that allow for healthy interaction with peers, and school boards continue to provide appropriate academic placements for their clients. In 2003, Caithkin established the Murray MacInnes Bursary Program to thank the community and the resources that have supported them. Bursaries are awarded at each school where their clients attend. In secondary schools, a bursary is given to a graduating student who will pursue postsecondary education in social work or child and youth work and maintained an average of 80%. The elementary program provides an award to the “Most Improved Student.” Over the past 18 years, this program has assisted over 120 secondary school students and 175 elementary graduates.

Caithkin has demonstrated over the past 20 years its ability to provide long-term placements for clients referred to them. Their successes include reunifications to biological families, long-term placements and adoptions within the organization, and supporting their clients as they move to forever families of their own, graduations from secondary and post-secondary school, and several transitions to adult services. Local and community resources are utilized whenever possible to contribute to normalcy for individuals in their care. Caithkin firmly believes that every child and youth is a “Super Hero” who deserves a chance to become the best child they can be to become the best adults they can be in the future. Currently, there are almost 18,000 children and youth living in foster care, and the need for stable home environments continues to grow.

One of the most challenging problems that we currently have is adjusting to the changes in expectations as our society changes with the increase of technology, social media, and information overload. We struggle to ensure that our responses are not just knee-jerk because society now expects immediate answers to everything. That is not always the best strategy when life decisions are being made. As an organization, we have sometimes struggled to ensure that our policies and procedures are modified to adjust to legislation and society changes. Covid-19 has affected our clients and presented many challenges this past year. We have had to explore alternatives to community resources and activities like summer camps and social clubs to satisfy leisure activities and socialization needs. We have also had to modify extensive protocols to be observed in our foster homes and with our Treatment Support Staff and office locations. Unfortunately, when stressors in society increase, as we have experienced over the past year with job losses, family tragedies, and mental health challenges, children tend to be the first victims.

BUSINESS PROFILE:

COLLINGWOOD OLIVE OIL CO. Collingwood Olive Oil Co. is celebrating seven years in business! Husband and wife team Alex Yuen and Cheryl McMenemy opened the doors of the Collingwood Olive Oil Co. in May of 2014. Creatively renovating a tired heritage home on Ste. Marie Street, they crafted a beautiful location where they could dispense the freshest extra virgin olive oils from around the world, an impressive selection of all-natural, gluten-free balsamic vinegars, and a pantry stocked with specialty foods. They have often dubbed their little shop “a candy store for grownups,” and it has proven to be a perfect complement to Collingwood’s growing food movement.

The pair adopted two key beliefs into their business concept: That a customer should be able to taste everything before they take it home, and that education is critical for recurring business. This combination leads to one of the finest and most enjoyable features of their store: The Tasting Tour. Customers are greeted by a friendly, knowledgeable employee who guides them through balsamic and olive oil chemistry, handling, and

health properties. On top of that, customers are encouraged to taste anything of interest! New customers are immediately astonished at the difference between their products versus generic and supermarket brands. The level of customer care and engagement provided simply isn’t possible in the majority of the food retail market and makes a visit to the store much more than the average shopping trip. It becomes an experience! Likely, this is why they are ranked “#1 Retail Shopping Store in Collingwood” on Trip Advisor. Unfortunately, during the COVID pandemic, the couple has had to pivot into straight retail, removing the in-store tasting option. Both of them look forward to normal days ahead and to be able to re-launch the “taste before you buy” concept, as well as group tours and tasting parties. The COVID situation, in some ways, has made their shop even more relevant due to increased in-home cooking and experimentation with different flavours and healthier options. Their full product lineup is available at their shop on Ste. Marie Street, with “best sellers” offered in boutique specialty food locations throughout the region.

OSLERBROOK LEADERSHIP INSPIRES COMMUNITY GIVING WITH MATCHING GIFT Bill MacWilliam has generously donated a matching leadership gift to the Georgian Triangle Humane Society to inspire others to help if they are able to do so. The generous $7,000 donation was given through a matching campaign when three very sick puppies needed intensive medical assistance at the GTHS Animal Centre. The gift inspired a group of donors to come together to support the medical treatment of the three pups, who later went on to be adopted. “Our charitable gift is designed to inspire others to help with the care of animals who are suffering and deserve a fresh start. Conversely, we know that companion animals are essential to mental health and wellness right now. When people welcome a new animal into their home, it can be very therapeutic and combat loneliness,” explained MacWilliam. A heartfelt thank you to Bill MacWilliam and the team at OslerBrook Golf and Country Club who continue to care for animal wellness and the benefits of pet ownership.

#COMMUNITYLOVE In a time when we need community more than ever, we are proud to have the support of amazing local businesses. Businesses like Canadian Pet Connection are thinking outside of the box and aligning their vision with Georgian Triangle Humane Society’s mission and values. They are helping to change the lives of thousands of pets and people each year, and strengthen the human-animal bond. Canadian Pet Connection was our Calendar Partner this year for our most successful Calendar Contest to date! They have also raised over $1,000 the past couple months through their online store by giving customers the option to date to GTHS at checkout. Thank you to every single person and business who champions a better world for pets and people in our wonderful community – we need more like you!

FEATURE PET: TIPPI I’m a senior kitty but at eight years old, I sure don’t feel like a senior yet hehe. I’m also a purrfectly adorable size at just under 8lbs! I’m in the “Special Paws” program because I have some weakness in my hind-end, but it doesn’t give me much trouble on a day to day basis. I’m on a medicine that I take every day which helps me feel much better! Due to my hind-end, the GTHS humans think I’d do best in a home with no young children or other rambunctious, energetic pets. I’d just love a cozy, loving home and maybe a home without many stairs...I hope that’s okay! My adoption fee is just $25 and includes my spay, (a trip to the kitty dentist), up to date vaccinations, dewormer and a microchip!

Want to protect the planet? Start at home. Every single person has a role to play in protecting the environment, regardless of their age or where they live. Becoming environmentally conscious means changing our daily behaviours at every level – individual, family, community, professional, and decision-making. Ultimately, our homes and our families are essential starting points for protecting the earth and the oceans. Earth Day is about raising awareness about the importance of protecting our planet and taking action. This annual planetary party celebrates all things environmentally friendly. First held on April 22nd, 1970, it’s grown to be observed by more than one billion people in 193+ countries. It was a cold, snowy, and windy day on April 22nd this year. Even though we could not participate in group activities this year, I hope many found other ways to celebrate Earth Day activities at home, or donated to an eco-conscious organization. Of course, picking up garbage is an all-time favourite, so some of us from the Georgian Life team partook in that activity in Collingwood along with head tree hugger, Kerri MacDonald, from the Environment Network. Cancer Chat I am putting on coffee. I like to drink coffee when I conduct an interview. I have a few minutes before I call Narda Hunt for a second story in the Cancer Chat. I have not spoken to her before; last time, we communicated via email. I make the call. Her voice is soft, calm, confident, and her light South African accent becomes more prominent as we speak. “I want to talk to you about COVID-19,” she says. I have called to hear about her recent brain surgery. “I am used to it now,” she says easily, “It’s my life.” Narda refers to her 10-year battle with cancer that began with BRCA2 mutant breast cancer, which has metastasized to her brain. It’s days before her 40th birthday. “Covid is making everything very difficult,” she says, “I don’t want to stay at home, I want to see my friends, I want to live.” Prior to surgery, Narda required radiation. This is not new for her. Narda and her husband Brian frequently make the drive from Collingwood to Toronto’s Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre, where doctors direct a beam of radiation at the two tumors that grow in her brain. “It’s awful, because of Covid, I have to go in by myself and my husband has to wait in the car. He doesn’t even have any place to pee” she tells me. Brian uses a bottle brought for the deed as he waits in the parking lot. Usually, Narda has 20 minutes in the Linac, but she received a gruelling twohour session before her brain surgery. The radiation coupled with steroids to control symptoms is destroying her body. Steroid use has led to avascular necrosis, death of bone tissue, requiring hip replacement surgery. “It is worse than the cancer,” she says with authority. Narda feels this will be her last treatment. “I keep saying it,” she says quietly, “But I keep going through it. It’s too much now.” Narda continued with the matter-of-fact tone in her voice, “I won’t be here much longer. It is my burden to carry in life. It has been assigned to me by God, and it’s okay with me if God wants me to, I am okay with it.” Narda’s brain surgery was performed at St. Michael’s Hospital downtown Toronto in March. “It’s so depressing there,” she says. “It’s dark and dirty. There are no people, no tourists, no cars.” Covid, of course, has shut down the once vibrant Toronto city life.

Again, she must go into the hospital alone. Narda is understandably upset, “There should be exceptions. I’m having brain surgery; I can’t even speak after the surgery. My husband should be there with me.” This is her third brain surgery, her twelfth surgery in total. Narda notices the other people in the hospital, other patients; they are all alone. The hospital staff looks overworked; they seem hard-faced, emotionless, like “more stern,” she says, “stressed.” Although the surgery was a success, sadly, options for Narda are running out. Returning to Germany for another round of alternative chemotherapy is discussed. Narda is hesitant. “I am scared of passing away there; I want to be with my family.” Facing inevitability, Narda finds it hard to consider a future. “I may not live for more than one more year. Why do I need to go to the dentist? Teeth are for the long term. Why would I buy new clothes that I won’t be able to wear? It’s hard for me not to think that way.” Narda says now the surgery is completed, she is feeling normal again like she can keep on going. “Brian wants me to do everything I can to stay alive. And I do.” As we wrap up our conversation, Narda’s voice makes me feel like I am speaking with an angel. “Cancer is not hopeless. It can even be a gift that you know when you will die. It can give you that chance to say goodbye. So many people are worse off than me. People get raped, people have no food or have bad marriages. I am not the only one suffering.” I consider Narda the bravest person with whom I have ever spoken. We say goodbye, and I hang up the phone feeling emotional. I recall Narda’s words, “Cancer is an awful thing, but it’s not embarrassing. We are resilient as humans.”

BUSINESS PROFILE:

Land development engineering, from the ground up Chris Crozier has always been fascinated with visualizing, planning, and building things, even as a youngster. He has been a practicing professional engineer since 1993 and in 2004, he co-founded C.F. Crozier & Associates Inc., right here in Collingwood. Chris credits his entrepreneurialism to his family: his late father, a school teacher but businessman at heart; his grandfathers who were both selfemployed; and of course, his wife who has shown unfailing support and encouraged him to go into business for himself. C.F. Crozier & Associates Inc. (Crozier) is a leading consulting engineering firm committed to growing careers and building communities by delivering multi-disciplinary engineering services in private sector land development. Crozier provides services in civil, water resources, traffic/transportation, hydrogeological, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering, complimented by landscape architecture and building science. With offices in Collingwood, Toronto, Milton, and Bradford, Crozier’s growing team of nearly 200 professionals work collaboratively with developers, builders, planners, architects, landowners, and stakeholder groups to advance residential, industrial, commercial, institutional, and recreational resort projects from concept through to construction completion. The firm is guided by its business philosophy, The Crozier Way: commitment to the private sector, dedication to delivery, and client-first relationships. Chris explains,

This is the reason why clients keeping choosing us. Our commitment to the private sector means we have a deep understanding of how our clients do business. Our dedication to delivery means we design our business practices to keep pace with every project’s unique delivery needs. And finally, our client-first approach means earning our client’s trust with measurable results and being business allies. We have a willingness to be creative in how we offer solutions to our clients, which they appreciate as it involves them in the process. Doing so helps us build trust and loyalty and demonstrates the value we place on building strong relationships.

a higher status in society and encourages employees to pursue new ideas into the industry’s future. A recent example of this is the firm’s restructuring where Nick Mocan, who started as a co-op student 16 years ago, was promoted to president in 2020 after Chris returned from his eight month cancer treatment and transitioned to his current role as CEO. Chris says, “I am tremendously fulfilled by witnessing our employees’ growth as they move through the stages of their lives, both personally and professionally. Guiding some of our young talent… is incredibly rewarding.” Crozier takes great pride in offering their employees a collaborative work environment in modern workspaces designed to inspire and engage. Diversifying their office presence geographically has proven to be a successful growth strategy and one they continue to pursue. Each office location is strategically chosen, considering the demand in current and future markets and access to talent. Crozier chooses office locations that suit people’s lifestyles, making them desirable for employees. Although Covid-19 brought forth the need for the offices to close for the first time in 17 years, employees smoothly transitioned to a work-from-home mode thanks to an early investment in IT infrastructure. They look forward to returning to the office when safe to do so and are considering offering a hybrid working environment of work-from-home and in-office to their employees. Selecting Collingwood as Crozier’s head office aligns with a longterm vision of creating a consulting engineering practice with national significance. Collingwood is transitioning into a knowledge-based economy and advancing as a Tech North Hub. This evolution, combined with the area’s attractiveness to a broader base beyond just retirees, reinforces Collingwood’s suitability as the firm’s long-term headquarters.

Chris is proud of the culture that exists in their offices. Employees genuinely enjoy spending time together, so much so that social activities flourished even virtually despite Covid-19. “We cultivate a work environment that promotes meaningful relationships for our employees to create new friendships and sometimes even families.” states Chris. The firm also believes in elevating young professionals to

The world’s largest treasure hunting game Geocaching: a great way to get outside and have fun! Geocaching (JEE-oh-cash-ing) is an outdoor activity that combines hiking/walking with a techaided treasure hunt. The name derives from a mashup of “geography” and “cache”. Whether on a trek for fun or treasure, geocaching is for everyone! More than two decades old now, geocaching has evolved into a vast, diverse and passionate community of users. There are more than three million geocaches hidden all around the world in parks, trails, and urban areas, and there are hundreds located in our area. You can geocache on your own, with a few friends, or with other devotees at events year-round, around the world. However you choose to do it, the game of geocaching can be delightfully addicting. While hard-core geocachers like my brother (pictured here - who has completed thousands of finds all over the world) use a proper hand-held GPS, I use my smartphone app from geocaching.com to navigate to the cache. After you’ve done some research on potential caches online or the app, you’ll use the app to navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Many caches can be found in this area, including traditional caches, multi-caches, mystery, and event caches. For the newbie, the traditional or basic cache is the most appropriate starting point. I’m not going to get into the technicalities of how the app works, but, essentially, you check the app’s map page for nearby caches and then click on the one you want to find. The app tells you how close you are, but it won’t show you the best route to take to get to a cache. Once you get really close, then you start to seek out likely hiding places for the cache. Take your time and be observant - locating the cache may take time, especially at first. Keep in mind the cache’s size and be watchful for anything that looks subtly unnatural or unusual. Caches vary in shape and size, they can be small like a film container or larger like a peanut butter jar or Tupperware container. Caches contain a logbook to sign, pen or pencil, and might have items such as coins, trinkets, chips, or other inexpensive things that can be exchanged. Once you find a cache, it’s time for you to examine your cache’s treasure! But there are some rules/etiquette to follow: • Check out the swag inside the cache and sign the logbook. Some caches may not include a functioning pen or pencil, so it is best to bring one along. • Take one item out, (if you want to) but only if you replace it with a new item. • If the item you take is a “trackable,” you have an obligation to move that item to a new cache. • Carefully seal the cache and hide it exactly as you found it. Don’t try to make it easier or harder for the next person to find. • This is optional, but part of the fun - log your “Found it” or “Didn’t find it” on your dashboard at www.geocaching.com or the app. Here you can note the cache’s condition and provide future geocachers anything they might want to know - don’t provide any spoilers, though. Once you start finding a lot of caches, you may want to create and hide your own cache! My daughter and I have one stashed in Wasaga Beach called Autumn’s Treasure Chest. This cache has lots of treasures for kids, it’s pretty easy to find, not to mention there is a great playground! It’s enjoyable to read the logs that people post when they find your cache like, “So it’s a beautiful springlike day in November and Homer and I have come back up to the Wasaga Beach area for a day of caching. This was our first stop this morning after a long drive, so Homer could get out and stretch his legs and we could make our first find. It’s probably more exposed at this time of year so it was a nice quick find.”

Geocaching can help you find out about new places to explore, even places locally that you’ve never been to before. That’s especially true when having to stay closer to home these days. People have discovered kayaking because of geocaching (yes, I’ve done this with my brother on a beautiful lake in the Kingston area). Caches are found in all sorts of terrain: in towns, on trails, on lakes and rivers and many are hidden in plain site that you might walk by everyday. For information on geocaching, rules, regulations, cache creating or finding, I encourage you to check out www.geocaching.com. Creating an account and the basic app are both free, but you’ll also see an optional fee-based premium membership that offers additional features (I use the free one). I hope you get out there to discover how fun and interesting geocaching is; don’t forget to charge your smart phone. STORY | PHOTOS: SELENA BLAIS
