LET’S DANCE Active Arts, located upstairs at the Real Canadian SuperStore in Wasaga Beach, held their grand opening to celebrate their expansion on October 6th. It was a fun afternoon of dancing, playing games and face painting. Owners (and sisters), Alyssa and Deanne Service, offer dance classes for all ages, workshops, camps and birthday parties. THE LEGION SERVES ALL VETERANS The Royal Canadian Legion was founded by Veterans and for Veterans. They advocate for the care and benefits for all who served Canada, regardless of when or where they served. The Legion also provides representation and assistance to Veterans, including currently serving Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP, and their families, and access to our services is available to them at no cost, whether or not they are Legion members. The Legion helps thousands of Veterans each year and makes significant positive changes in their lives. THE LEGION EXISTS SO THAT CANADA NEVER FORGETS The Legion understands the importance of honouring past sacrifices and acknowledging the courage of those who served and still serve today. Through Remembrance Day ceremonies, the Poppy campaign, commemorative activities, youth education programs and more, the Legion helps Canadians to honour and remember. THE LEGION SERVES OUR COMMUNITIES AND OUR COUNTRY Legion Branches are the cornerstone of communities across Canada, and provide one of the largest volunteer bases in the country. With 1,400 Branches from coast to coast to coast, our members provide local services and supports to build a stronger Canada. Whether helping local Veterans, supporting seniors, providing youth sports programs, raising funds, volunteering to help those in need, or simply offering a place to gather for fun and celebration, Legionnaires provide essential services in their communities.

REMEMBRANCE WEEK PROJECT ENCOURAGES REFLECTION AND INCLUSION Collingwood Public Library partners with 5th Street Creative Initiatives to present an interactive week of Remembrance including professional live theatre. From November 2 to 11, the innaugural Remembrance Week Project offers historical, Indigenous and cultural speakers, a memorabilia show and tell event, art and artifact exhibits, NFB films and documentaries, and live, professional theatre with Shipyard Kitchen Party’s feature play “100 Years From Now: A folk musical of love, sacrifice and The Great War.” Remembrance Day challenges Canadians with one task: to never forget. But, we want to challenge people to change the way they choose to remember. The Remembrance Week project is designed to inspire the community to remember by collectively rediscovering and embracing history. Participants of all ages are encouraged to share various Canadian war-related stories through art. Art includes paintings, poems, original music, film, artifacts, sculptures, and photographs with descriptions, on display both at Collingwood Public Library and Simcoe Street Theatre. Community members are also invited to listen to the stories of local historians, veterans, and artists who help us resist forgetfulness. This project invites the community to ask themselves: What are the realities of war? Why should we be grateful for those who fought for us? What are the consequences of losing personal stories of war? Join us for a week-long, artistic, interactive exploration of the reality of our freedom, and the cost many paid to bring it home to Canada. Most events and exhibits are free to attend. SO THAT WE MAY BE FREE.

HONOURING VETERANS IS OUR DUTY In today’s fast-paced world, it can be easy to take our way of life for granted, and forget what so many men and women sacrificed for our freedoms. Remembrance initiatives remind us to take time to honour those who have dedicated their lives to serve our nation. THE POPPY CAMPAIGN

The Poppy Campaign is very much a local initiative, conducted by Legion Branches in cities, towns and communities across the country. Donations collected during the Poppy Campaign are held in Trust at the branch level to directly support Veterans and their families within their community and to help ensure Canadians ‘never forget’. Learn more about how your donations help Veterans. In the days leading up to November 11, Poppies can be seen in every corner of this great country. This show of support and display of remembrance would not be possible without the efforts of thousands of Legionnaires and Cadets who volunteer to distribute Poppies to the community through schools, community organizations and local businesses. We are so grateful for their efforts, and for the support of the many partners, local and national, who welcome Legion volunteers and Poppy boxes into their locations. Source: www.legion.ca

For every war, there are many who bravely and proudly leave their loved ones behind to protect the freedoms that we as Canadians are afforded. It is these brave few we honour. ©2007 Copyrighted Material

Every year, from the last Friday of October to November 11, tens of millions of Canadians wear a Poppy as a visual pledge to honour Canada’s Veterans and remember those who sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today. While the Poppy is distributed freely to all who wish to wear one, the Legion gratefully accepts donations to the Poppy Fund.

Ted Yoannou: In Your Corner Wasaga Beach Memories I’ve always loved the beach in Wasaga. For the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the fresh newcomers to our country and the ones that have been here for generations, the beach has inspired wonderful memories for its millions of visitors and residents over the years. A place for fun and adventure with family and friends or for solitary calm and reflection on your own. Or for both, at different times and stages in our lives. I’ve spent parts of every year of my life in Wasaga Beach, first at my grandparents’ cottage, then my parents, and now, my own. It’s remarkable that my grandfather’s decision to buy a small cottage for his family in the 1960’s has now led to six family cottages in the area, spanning five generations, over 60 family members... and still growing. Oh, how life would be different for our families had our grandfather decided to build a retirement home in his old village in northern Greece instead. The commute every Friday afternoon to Thessaloniki and then the four-hour bus ride west through the mountains to the village would have been murder on the kids! Here’s my top 10 list of beach memories with their approximate years in brackets: 1. Endless summer days at the beach with my brothers and cousins, gokarting and trips to the main drag (1967 to 1978) 2. First time getting drunk with my older brothers at the legendary Club 92 (1982 – no one was happier throwing up that night than me) 3. First time my parents let me use our cottage without them there (1983 – poor decision, Mom and Dad) 4. Frisbee, football, baseball, volleyball on the beach with my best buddies (1983 to 1995) 5. Proposing to my wife (1995 - that would be #1 if this list wasn’t chronological) 6. Dogs walks (1997 to 2019) 7. Getting more involved in the local communities through our family ownership and operation of the Wasaga Waterworld waterparks (1997 to 2005) and opening my law office in Collingwood serving the Georgian Bay area (2017 to 2019) 8. Teaching our kids to swim, ride bikes and build sandcastles; the kids playing frisbee, football, baseball and volleyball on the beach (see #4 above), riding waves, paddle boarding, kayaking and seadooing, campfires and hot-tubbing (1998 to 2019) 9. Watching our kids and their cousins and friends grow up together on the beach (1998 to 2019 – see #1 above) 10. First time our kids asked to use the cottage without us there (2019 – see #3 above – ouch!)

@sutherlandinsurance

And, of course, one more: 11. Happy Hour at our various cottages with our parents, uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters, cousins, children, nephews, nieces, friends, boyfriends and girlfriends, reliving the events of the day and solving the world’s, not to mention our family’s, problems - as the red-orange sunsets into Georgian Bay (1969 to 2019). Looking forward to another 50 years of more great beach memories.

If you live or vacation near the beach, be sure to keep creating special memories of your own in the sand, sun, wind and water; that is Wasaga... and remember not to tell your parents everything that happened the first time you were there alone with your friends.

ON THE HOMEFRONT Many Canadian Veterans have played a critical role in protecting Canadians on the homefront – whether from fires, floods and other threats, these men and women have risked their lives for our safety and protection. The Legion also understands the sacrifices of military families, the fathers, sons, mothers and daughters who have endured alongside Canadian Veterans. The Legion strives to support those families through a range of programs and referral services.

CLIMBING LAMP POSTS, LOUNGING ON BENCHES... IT’S A SCARECROW BOOK INVASION! On October 4th, the 23rd Annual Meaford Scarecrow Invasion and Family Festival held at the Rotary Harbour Pavilion marked the end of another wildly successful community event. This year’s theme celebrated books and the stories that helped shape our youth and our imagination. Wandering the downtown streets, the harbour and Station Hill, you’ll find close to 300 scarecrows including Atticus Finch, Anne of Green Gables, Huckleberry Finn, and Winnie the Pooh! The Scarecrow Parade and Family Festival was a flurry of fun and excitement with free activities and games for the whole family, apple pie contests, and live entertainment. From Bavaria with love… and speaking of love, the festival we celebrate as Oktoberfest traces its origins to 1810 and the wedding of a Crown Prince, who later became King Ludwig I, to a beautiful princess, Therese. The anniversary festivities grew year after year and booths were added, serving food and drink. Today, the festival is celebrated around the world and Creemore Springs Brewery continues this tradition, annually, at Blue Mountain Village. The jam-packed schedule this year included a Biergarten where guests sampled German-inspired food and Oktoberfest Lager while enjoying traditional live music with The Black Forest Band, dance performances by Mladi Glas Planika Slovenian Dance Group, interactive games and more! AS TIME SLIPS AWAY As time slips away… preparation is still the key to feeling in control. It occurred to me the other day while talking with a friend of just how life tends to slip away. It seems like yesterday we were in our twenty somethings, setting some goals to own a house, plan our family and have a secure job to pay for it all. So… what has happened for some of us? For some, life just seemed to get in the way, we lost our job, married the wrong person and for others, life carried on with busyness of everyday life. We kept our jobs got the promotion and raised our children from young active to adult life… It seems like yesterday we were bringing our children home from the hospital after giving birth. The slipping away of time happens whether you are successful or not. The clock has 24 hours and a week has seven days. There are four seasons in each year, depending of course in which part of the country you live in. So, what’s the point? The point is you can’t control time or often what happens outside of your control, but you can prepare for what might happen to you or someone you care deeply for. You see, as fulfilling my role of financial advisor for more than 28 years, I have focused my time to help people think about, talk about and plan for things they don’t want to think about, talk or plan for… the bad things that can happen, the things that get in the way. In the end though, they are thankful for having the discussion and putting plans in place to protect them as a family if they live too long, die too soon or got too sick to work along the way. I have helped families prepare for uncertainty of ill health including my own family. So, as you reflect on where has all the time gone? I encourage you to think about the possibility to being retired for as many years as you worked. I encourage you to think you will likely be in poorer health, too. I encourage you to sit down with a qualified professional and discuss some preparation options to put you back in a feeling of control. Brian A. PROTECT YOUR RIGHTS AND YOUR LOVED ONES In April, 2018, the province of Ontario launched a review of how workrelated cancers are evaluated to ensure the compensation system takes into account the most up to date medical research, best practices within the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), including the effects of being exposed to multiple substances in a workplace.

Home Auto Life Investments Group Business Farm Travel

Dr. Paul Demers, an internationally recognized expert on the health effects of workplace exposures, and Director of the Occupational Cancer Research Centre at Cancer Care Ontario, will review and determine work relatedness in the case of diseases like cancer. Occupational diseases are caused by exposure to physical, chemical or biological agents in the workplace. Of recent, the WSIB is reviewing claims relating to rubber workers in the Kitchener Waterloo area at several companies, facing serious health issues including various types of cancers linked to the exposure. It is of the utmost importance to keep workers safe in their working environment. Occupational diseases, especially cancers, can be difficult to link to workplace exposures, and it is not unusual for a claim to be filed many years after a job has ended. If you or anyone you know has been diagnosed with cancer and also has a history of working in an environment in which they were exposed to chemicals we can help! STOP NECK, BACK AND SHOULDER PAIN (PART 2)

PEACE, BROTHER

In our previous article (in September) we discussed how many of us suffer from persistent neck, back and shoulder pain. Resting, sleeping, massaging or taking pills only gives short-term relief. The pain will keep returning. A proper medical assessment will identify the real cause of the pain and whether it is from an overworked muscle, inflammation, or incorrect movements.

An evening of live entertainment, dancing, and inspiration - celebrated International Peace Day at the Collingwood Legion on September 21st. The free event was organized by Pivot2Peace, the South Georgian Bay Chapter of World Beyond War. Peace Day was established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, and provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace. Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography. More photos on www.georgianlife.ca

However, there are a few things you can do yourself to help stretch and strengthen your neck, back and shoulder muscles to get out of pain and prevent it from returning: • Neck & Shoulder Stretches: Slowly bend your neck to one side and hold for 8-10 seconds. Feel the stretch in the top of the shoulder and the side of your neck. Repeat on the opposite side. Bend your head forward (chin to chest) and hold for 8-10 seconds. Feel the stretch between your shoulder blades and the back of your neck. Tilt your head back and gently hold for 8-10 seconds. Repeat all of these stretches three times. • Back & Shoulder Stretch: Bend your elbow and bring your arm directly in front of you. Grasp your elbow with your other hand and gently pull directly across your body and hold for 8-10 seconds. Feel the stretch across your back and shoulder. Return to the start and then push your elbow back behind you, holding for 8-10 seconds. Switch arms and repeat on the opposite side. Again, repeat all of these stretches three times. • Neck Strengthening: Sit tall in a chair keeping your head and neck up and tuck your chin into your chest. With your hands on your forehead, gently push your head forward into your hands but resist the motion with your hands. Hold for 8-10 seconds and repeat three times. • Shoulder Strengthening: Wrap one hand under your opposite armpit and grasp the bottom of your shoulder blade. Raise your elbow towards the ceiling, gently pulling the bottom of your shoulder blade forward. Hold for 8-10 seconds and repeat three times. Then repeat with your opposite arm. • Shoulder & Back Strengthening: Stand about 1-2 feet away from a wall, at a slight angle, with your arms fully extended. Imagine doing a push-up, without bending your arms, by pushing your chest toward the wall. Hold for 8-10 seconds and repeat three times. These exercises will help to both stretch and strengthen your muscles, and prevent some of the pain you feel in your neck, back and shoulders. More involved exercises can be done for longer relief of pain. HOMEMADE APPLE BUTTER Went apple picking? Got lots of apples? Make this easy homemade apple butter recipe! Add this sweet fall flavour to any meal or snack - a dollop of homemade apple butter to tantalize your tastebuds. YUM! Prep time: 20 minutes | Cook time: 2 hours Servings: 32 | Calories: 23 KCAL

INGREDIENTS: 4 pounds apples (roughly 9 medium-sized apples), peeled and cored 1 cup apple cider 3/4 cup loosely packed light brown sugar 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt Juice of half a lemon (about 1 tablespoon)

INSTRUCTIONS: Place the apples, apple cider, brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and salt in a large pot, and cook over medium-low heat, uncovered, (stirring occasionally) until the apples have become very soft (about 1 hour). I was transferred to the GTHS about a month ago from another shelter, and have been lucky enough to spend the past few weeks in foster care!! At eight years old, I’m a lovely senior girl. My foster family says I’m a VERY GOOD DOG! I’m sweet and very loving and will happily follow you around wherever you go, and I enjoy spending my evenings curled up on the couch, cuddling with the humans. As much as I love naps, I do also love getting out for walks and car rides. Let’s say I’m a relatively active senior! I’m also clever! I know lots of commands and am very well behaved in a home. I really really just want to please you and make you happy.

CANCER CHAT With November being pancreatic cancer month, I want to share a story about my father-in-law, Geoff Burston, who was sadly taken by pancreatic cancer in November 2012. Geoff was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer in September 2012 and told he had months to live. My mother-in-law Maja tells me, “Nothing can prepare you for such dreaded news.” Geoff and Maja met in Northern Ontario in 1978. Maja says with a Croatian accent, “It was love on the first sight.” After 34 years of marriage and a “good but busy life”, Geoff and Maja started to prepare for their retirement years. In summer of 2012, while making plans and getting ready for ‘their time’, Geoff started experiencing back pain. He was told by his doctor there was nothing to worry about. But only a month later, the back pain worsened and Geoff developed extensive bloating and jaundice. Ultrasound revealed a large mass in the pancreas. “We were both totally stunned”, Maja recalls. Pancreatic cancer is an aggressive disease with a dismal five year survival rate of less than 5%. Although multiple combinations of gene mutations are found in pancreatic cancer and a small percentage do run in families, the vast majority, greater than 95% are driven by an activating mutation in a gene called KRAS. Diagnosis is complicated by absence of symptoms that appear only after significant disease progression. Mutation of the KRAS gene traps the Ras protein that comes from the mutated gene in a constitutively activated state. The effect is amplified through Ras signaling pathways that regulate cell growth, survival and motility, all of which are commonly disturbed in cancer. It is scary and fascinating to consider that one single nucleotide substitution in the KRAS gene out of 3.2 billion nucleotides in the human genome can lead to oncogenic transformation. Following Geoff’s initial diagnosis, his health deteriorated very quickly. He was admitted to the hospital where he got the news it was stage IV pancreatic cancer. Maja tells me, “We looked into every glimmer of hope for new treatments.” There is currently a desperate need for new early detection methods and treatments for pancreatic cancer. Alex Trebek from the show Jeopardy was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer in March this year. Trebek was given a new chemotherapy cocktail and although the initial response was “great news” and the tumors shrunk considerably, Trebek has recently returned for additional treatment. The KRAS gene is an attractive drug target but has been labelled “undruggable”. Effective drugs fit into pockets found on the surface of proteins like a baseball fits into a baseball-glove. Ras proteins have no obvious high affinity binding sites for small molecules. However, two independent studies published in 2019 have identified inhibitors that bind to a shallow groove on the surface of Ras and cause anti-proliferative effects in mutant Ras cells. Using a different approach, AstraZeneca initiated a preclinical trial with antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) targeting the KRAS messenger RNA. Preclinical studies were very effective but the phase I study was discontinued because of insufficient knockdown of the target in tumors. “The molecule was safe and well tolerated” the vice president of AstraZeneca says, “[but] it didn’t demonstrate sufficient KRAS lowering to warrant moving forward.” Trebek’s case has raised awareness about pancreatic cancer and he says, “gives hope to so many people that there are options” for treating the disease. The Hirshberg Foundation for pancreatic cancer research has established World Pancreatic Cancer Day November 21 to celebrate survivors and honor loved ones. “I lost a wonderful husband and my children lost a wonderful father” Maja laments, “Geoff will never be forgotten.” Submitted by: Dr. Oliver Kent, Scientific Associate and cancer researcher at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Do you have questions about cancer? How about a chat with a Scientist? Email (kent.uhn@gmail.com) or text (416-707-6546) and let me know what’s up!

Sleep specialist is expanding her sleep and trauma program to South Georgian Bay!

"We do this work to keep humanity humane."

Dr. Celeste Thirlwell Neuroscientist/ Psychiatrist & Sleep Medicine Specialist Health Energies of Wasaga Beach, is excited to welcome Dr. Celeste Thirlwell to the South Georgian Bay Community. She is a humanist and maverick who has trained in sleep medicine, neurosurgery, psychiatry and neuroscience research at McMaster University and the University of Toronto. She is a pioneer in the field of neuromodulation and she has spoken nationally and internationally on many topics including: Insomnia, PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Post-Concussion Syndrome, and Chronic Pain. She is moving to Wasaga Beach this Fall to set up an innovative and much needed clinic to "Help Those Who Serve Their Community", with a focus on teachers, first responders, and veterans. From Dr. Thirlwell's studies in western neuroscience, medicine, and eastern philosophy, she has concluded that restorative sleep is an important cornerstone of good health. Furthermore, optimizing the management of trauma, whether it is physical, mental or emotional trauma, is key to promoting quality sleep. When asked what drives her, Dr. Thirlwell said, "I am always looking for new ways to help my patients. Neuroscience research and development are light years ahead of what is being taught in medical schools. Meanwhile, patients suffer when, in fact, there are new innovative ways to treat their insomnia and trauma." In some ways, serendipity has played a role in attracting Dr. Thirlwell to South Georgian Bay. Back in 2016, she was introduced to Kim and Jackie Sartor, two sisters from Collingwood, who brought SEQEX, a form of Pulse Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF), to Canada. This technology has been used in Rehabilitation Hospitals in Italy for over 22 years and is very well researched, but it is nowhere to be found in medical offices in North America. The PEMF technology intrigued the neuroscientist in Dr. Thirlwell, and she went to visit the head office of Seqex in Trento, Italy and then attended training in Sardinia, Italy, so that she could incorporate the technology into her practice and better help her patients. Since then, she has helped hundreds of patients for whom the standard pharmaceutical drugs have not been effective. Dr. Thirlwell explained, "I see results in patients that I never saw before in all my training in psychiatry and neurosurgery. With PEMF technology, I can decrease inflammation, increase microcirculation and take my trauma patients out of 'fight and flight mode' so that they are less anxious during the day and get a better sleep at night." When Dr. Thirlwell learned that Kim and Jackie Sartor were already helping firefighters with the Seqex technology in Collingwood, she became interested in moving to South Georgian Bay to expand her sleep program to help those who serve our community. Welcome to South Georgian Bay, Dr.Thirlwell! For more information and/or to book an appointment with Dr. Thirlwell, please call: (705) 352-3900

BUSINESS PROFILE: MEN WITH KNIVES CATERING It’s all in the name “What do you do?” is often the first question in regards to their name Men with Knives, and there is always some good banter on the gender reference and visuality of the knives. With its origins as a staffing company to its current position of one of Collingwood’s largest caterers, it is all in the name. Right where they want to be. Proud of what they have accomplished MWK has created a place in Collingwood and the story, and name, is part of the success. Partners, Gareth and Julie Carter, have built a strong team and place in our food economy over the past seven years starting with a man and a smoker, and now employing over 60 team members during the winter season and partnering with Alpine Ski Club, one the area’s most modern and memorable all season venues. They have grown to become a household name in Collingwood with a broad clientelle of private clients, community partners and venues, in addition to the ski club, such as The Larder, Blue Mountain Heaven, The Roost Winery and Avening Hall. “Part of the legacy of MWK that is important to keep forefront is that through food and coming together we can also help to build a stronger community. This is our home and our children’s home. We have a responsibility. Working with others in the Food & Beverage community is always enjoyable at events such as Taste of the Town (Rotary Collingwood), The New Farm ‘Farms for Change’, Bowls for Bed (Home Horizon) and the Community Longtable (Rotary Thornbury). In 2019, MWK donated to Home Horizon, Hospice Georgian Triangle, Humane Society, Collingwood General & Marine Hospital, Big Brothers Big Sisters and several other smaller fundraisers, putting their annual giving at over $50,000! Contributions range from in kind donations, drop off dinners, subsidized charity dinner and galas, 40 person Larder dinners and a multi year pledge to the hospital,” states Julie.

These all-encompassing energies of the Earth sustain our good health and energize us. PEMF has been reported by patients to help in treating acute and chronic pain, depression, anxiety, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, as well as accelerating the healing time of injuries, increasing energy, sleep disorders, fatigue and it is an excellent anti-aging strategy. This technology and treatments have been available in Europe for more than 20 years and has recently been approved by Health Canada. For more information or to book a complimentary trial treatment call 795-352-3900 or stop into 1423 Mosley St. Unit 3 in Wasaga Beach. Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography. 9am-6pm Monday-Thursday • 9am-5pm Friday

On September 27th, as part of a larger global movement, concerned students and climate activists marched from Collingwood Collegiate Institute to Town Hall protesting the need for governments and the people to act on climate change! From Collingwood Mayor Brian Saunderson, “Congratulations to the CCI students who organized the Climate Change Strike today. There were over 700 students and people at Townhall to raise their voices and express their concerns about climate change. This is a local, Provincial, National and International issue and we all need to work together to do our part to protect our planet”. DRIVE SAFE THESE BUSINESSES CAN HELP

Be sure you’re ready for winter driving Whether we like it or not, winter is on its way, and now is the time to prep your vehicle so that you can be safe on the roads this winter.

Elmvale’s Trusted Auto Repair Shop for Four Decades

Here are some simple preventative maintenance tips to consider: For best visibility for yourself and other drivers, ensure all of your exterior lights are working and cleaned from dirt and debris. Inspect your battery to confirm that the connections are solid and corrosion-free. There should be no hesitation or delay in cold start ups. When possible, allow your vehicle engine to warm up before driving it on those super cold days. Check your wipers for blade quality and straightness to safeguard that you get a clean wipe every time. Top up your windshield wiper fluid with winter ready washer fluid to help you clear away ice and slush. Inspect your tires for tread depth, cracking and tire pressure. If you switch to winter tires, don’t wait until it snows to book that appointment! Service departments are at their busiest this time of year, so planning ahead is ideal. Consider putting a blanket and other items in the trunk should you get stuck in your car.

Every vehicle on the road in Ontario must be insured with a policy that includes liability coverage. This is designed to protect both the victim and atfault party in a car accident: the victim is ensured that resources exist to compensate them for any losses, and the at-fault party is protected from what would often be ruinous costs for legal defence and settlement payments. While it is common for a basic policy to include a $1,000,000 liability limit, given the increasing complexity and costs associated with accident claims we advise our clients to consider limits upwards of $2,000,000. The additional cost for this extra coverage makes up a small percentage of your overall policy and could make a significant difference to your financial wellbeing in the event of an accident.

Please don’t be mad at us... we don’t like winter either!

To help offset the cost of medical treatment following a car accident, all Ontario car insurance policies provide a series of accident benefits. These benefits range from coverage for medical rehab and attendant care, to coverage for lost income, or to refund tuition if your schooling is disrupted. As everyone’s situation is different it is important to tailor these benefits to meet your unique needs and those of your family. Physical Damage After our homes, our vehicles are often the second largest single purchases we make in our lives. With the cost of repairing vehicles always increasing, having proper insurance matters more than ever. Physical damage coverage goes by several difference names: Comprehensive, Collision, and All-Perils. Comprehensive coverage is there to protect your vehicle for the most basic physical losses – for example, if it catches fire, is stolen, or suffers a cracked windshield. Adding Collision extends your coverage to insure damage caused by single-vehicle or at-fault accidents. Insuring your vehicle for All-Perils adds coverage for theft of the vehicle by someone living in the same household. Most vehicle leasing or financing companies insist on your vehicle having at least Comprehensive and Collision coverages, and usually set a maximum policy deductible as a condition of your contract. The standard physical damage deductible in Ontario is now $500, but lower or higher deductibles are often available. Other Coverages In addition to these, there are many options and endorsements available. Accident Forgiveness is an endorsement that prevents an insurer from increasing your rates following your first or second at-fault accident. Minor Conviction Protection extends this to minor tickets, such as most speeding tickets. Other more traditional options include coverage that provides a rental car if your insured vehicle is damaged (known as loss-of-use coverage) or coverage for emergency roadside assistance, such as towing.

FEELING GROOVY FOR A GREAT CAUSE Everyone got their Woodstock on with groovy, psychedelic clothes at the Spirit of Collingwood Tour on October 26th, to support Home Horizons Collingwood and the Barbara Weider House, a local charitable organization, transforming the lives of youth at risk of homelessness by providing them with the opportunity to rebuild their lives and achieve their full potential. Each bus made four stops at some of Collingwood’s exclusive locations including: BIION Footwear, Tin Shack, The Collingwood Brewery and Occasions Food Hall to sample local beer, wine, cider and spirits and appetizers! The tour ended at the Alpine Ski Club for dinner catered by Men with Knives Catering, a live & silent auction and dancing to Strange Potatoes and of course as always, the Georgian Life PHOTO BOOTH! 5 HIDDEN COSTS TO INCLUDE IN YOUR MONTHLY BUDGET Creating a monthly budget allows you to anticipate and track your spending so that your credit card bill isn’t a surprise. While things like rent, groceries and transit may be top of mind, there are few costs that may slip through the cracks. For example, automated payments are easily forgotten and can add up overtime. It’s important to have an accurate picture of your spending to get a better handle on your finances. While there are plenty of hidden costs, here are five you may not be budgeting for: Repairs. It’s crucial to set up a monthly budget category for repairs. This can be broken down into categories such as transportation (car, bike), house (plumbing, electrical, roofing) and technology (computer, phone) repair. Look at the average costs to repair items in those categories and set that budget aside. If you don’t end up using it, consider moving it to the next month or absorbing it elsewhere. Pets. For those with pets, there are several expenses you may not consider budgeting. PetSmart suggests tracking payments that occur frequently like food purchases and grooming. Grooming needs to be professionally done every four to six weeks. Pet emergencies is a category many may not think of, but can have the biggest impact. You never know when your pet may need to see a vet, and in the moment, you will do anything to help them, no matter the cost. Call your local vet to understand potential emergency costs and consider looking into pet insurance. Gifts. Gifts for special occasions can creep up, so it’s always important to budget when you know a major milestone is happening. The first step is setting a budget for birthdays and anniversaries as they occur every year. Set out a maximum spend, consider giving a homemade gift or provide a gift card so you know the chance of it being left unused is lower. Afterwards, plan for unexpected gifts such as weddings, engagement parties, baby showers and retirement parties. If you know these things could happen in the near future, look at average costs that people give as gifts. Source: www.newscanada.com
