FUN HAD BY ALL AT ANNUAL WALKATHON From the Georgian Triangle Humane Society: “On September 22, 2019, the Georgian Triangle Humane Society held its 7th Annual Friends for Life Walkathon. The event took place at the beautiful Blue Mountain Village; despite the forecast, the weather held off which enticed families and dogs alike to attend. Highlights of day included Paw Patrol mascots Marshall and Chase, as well as Sparky who tagged along with the Town of the Blue Mountains Fire Department, face painting, a GTHS Alumni Zone, a pet costume and best trick contest that was loads of fun, live animal readings and an “ask the expert” booth featuring GTHS’ dog school trainer! With the help of our fabulous community – participants, sponsors, in-kind donors and volunteers, we’re excited to announce that this year’s Walkathon raised over $59,000! Thank you to the event volunteers, the Walkathon Committee, and all of our Sponsors. A special thank you to our 2019 Walkathon Committee Chair, Monika Merz. This event was only possible because of her unwavering leadership and guidance.” Photos: Dave West Photography

VESTIBULAR REHABILITATION

2nd Annual

Over the past few months we have discussed topics pertaining to our vestibular system, how it functions, and common vestibular disorders. Following proper assessment and diagnosis of a vestibular disorder, vestibular rehabilitation to try and regain normal function may be recommended. Treatment options vary depending on the area of weakness.

Holida y Showcase of Homes

SAVE THE DATE! November 30th, 2019 Get professional design tips and tricks from a Celebrity Speaker Jane Lockhart

As mentioned in the previous article, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a very common cause of vertigo. It can be corrected through physical maneuvers of the head and body. These maneuvers are often called Canalith Repositioning or Liberatory Manuevers. It is possible to have BPPV in conjunction with other vestibular disorders; however, if BPPV is the sole cause of the person’s vestibular weakness, the maneuvers are all that are required. When an assessment reveals there is more than a physical issue (i.e. BPPV) at play, specialized programs are required. These programs are referred to as Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT). VRT aims to reduce or extinguish the hallucination of motion, or the exaggeration of motion, and improves or restores coordination of head and eye movement, as well as balance and equilibrium function. VRT helps the person compensate or “recalibrate the brain to function more effectively with a vestibular deficit. There are several approaches to accomplish this: Adaptation, Habituation, and Substitution. Adaptation resets or retunes the coordination of head and eye movement by use of repetitive activities. These activities will often provoke the very symptoms you are trying to avoid; however, as with time the symptoms lessen. An example of an activity would be having the patient sit on a balance ball, with a slight bounce, while they turn their head side-to-side and read two separate word lists.

Habituation exercises reduce the hallucination of motion or movement. These will also provoke symptoms but as the brain is exposed repeatedly to the undesirable stimuli in a short time span, the intensity of motion diminishes. Substitution protocols will strengthen the weakened systems by reducing the dependence on the remaining ones. For example, performing exercises with the eyes closed, or in conjunction with standing on a moveable surface, such as a trampoline. If someone has vestibular weakness and stands on a trampoline, they are forcing their vestibular system to become more dominant. Individuals with vestibular disorders often limit or reduce their levels of activity in order to minimize unpleasant symptoms. This more sedentary lifestyle will result in decreased muscle strength and reduced stamina, thus making it even more difficult to function normally. It is evident that (the caused by) vestibular disorders can negatively affect daily living subsequently impacting a person’s quality of life. If patients adopt and implement VRT protocols, it is more likely that they will restore their everyday function. VRT is noninvasive, cost effective, and user-friendly. Physiotherapists are often the providers of VRT; but, this can vary by clinic and region.

99’S ANNUAL GOLD CUP AIR RALLY Excerpt from media release by Akky Mansikka, Co-chair of the GCAR 2019, First Canadian Chapter of the 99s: “We thought your readers in the Collingwood area might be interested our flying event on Thursday Sept. 19th, 2019. At 9:00 AM, 26 women in 11 airplanes will be departing Collingwood Airport on the 99s Annual Gold Cup Air Rally (GCAR). Our organization, The Ninety-Nines (99s) is an international organization of women pilots founded in 1929 by 99 Licensed Women Pilots. Amelia Earhart was elected as the first president. The Ninety-Nines mission is to promote the advancement of aviation through education, scholarships, and mutual support while honouring their unique history and sharing their passion for flight. The Rally is not a race. It is a cross-country challenge competition based on aviation knowledge and skills and is open to all 99s members and any female pilot. Two of the pilots are from the Collingwood area. The other pilots are mostly from southern Ontario and one from the United States. The women pilots come from all walks of life. From doctors, to massage therapists, to gardeners and teachers, flying for recreation, commercial pilots for the airlines, instructors, and military pilots. We all have one overpowering interest and that is the passion of flying and bringing awareness to young girls that there is a career for women in aviation in what is still a male dominated profession.” Photos: Dave West Photography

Ted Yoannou: In Your Corner CHOOSE YOUR LAWYER WISELY The history of lawyer/client relationships is not a pleasant one. Too many legal scenarios end with the client confused, frustrated and unhappy. If you are in the difficult situation of requiring a lawyer, it is important to choose the one that will best serve your needs. Here are three important rules to guide your selection process.

SIB W Y B D DENIE 12345678

1. YOUR LAWYER MUST BE YOUR CHOSEN LEADER In our court system, your lawyer is your best, and often, only friend. They are the person you are choosing to lead and advise you. You must ensure your lawyer and their firm’s team have the necessary knowledge and experience to successfully guide you from start to finish. When initially meeting and communicating with your prospective lawyer, you must assess whether this is the person and firm you want quarterbacking your case. When choosing your lawyer, ensure you are confident of their knowledge, experience and leadership abilities. 2. YOUR LAWYER MUST COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY Three of the biggest complaints about lawyers are:

DOE

JANE

JANE

WORKPLACE SAFETY & INSURANCE BOARD CANADA DISABILITY PENSION PLAN DISABILITY TAX CREDIT CLAIM DENIED? NEED REPRESENTATION? 12345678

a) “I never hear from him, I don’t know what’s going on with my case.” Your lawyer and his office must communicate effectively and in a timely fashion with you with in-person meetings and by telephone, email and / or text. It’s your right to know what’s going on. b) “She never explained the various options available to me.” Many lawyers have tunnel vision and guide your case the way they want it to go, irrespective of your input or what best suits you. Remember, you are the client and the final decision-maker. You should be making informed decisions based on the best options your lawyer has worked to provide and the information she has effectively communicated to you.

c) “They speak legal-ese, not English.” Many lawyers use complicated legal terms and big words when communicating with clients. This is intimidating and confusing. And unnecessary. When choosing your lawyer, ensure they will communicate simply and effectively. 3. YOUR LAWYER’S FEES MUST FIT YOUR BUDGET O.J. Simpson reportedly spent $50,000 per day on his “dream team’ legal coverage. Assuming that’s not realistic (but if it is, call my office right away!), you must retain a lawyer with fees that are reasonable and affordable for you. But, do not confuse that with going with the cheapest option. In a court case, very important issues are often at stake – your liberty, criminal record, reputation, ability to work, travel, drive, etc. You are not shopping for ketchup or toilet paper, but rather someone who is going to represent and protect you in the best possible manner in this rare and critical stage of your life. It is going to be expensive. Some lawyers demand high initial retainer payments by cheque or cash only, but others do not. Ask about flexible methods of payments (credit card, e-transfer, debit) and monthly payment plans. When choosing your lawyer, ensure their fees and payment plans are reasonable and affordable. Follow these 3 simple rules, and you’ll be one of the rare ones who can say, “I love my lawyer!” … ok, that may be slightly wishful thinking, but at least it will be the effective and productive relationship that you deserve.

A NEW LEVEL OF RELAXATION Float Therapy or, simply ‘floating’, is the process of lying in a salt water solution, inside a specially designed tank where both sound and light are isolated - providing a thoroughly distraction-free relaxation experience. Due to the salt/water balance, your body rests in a perfect state of weightlessness. You are unable to tell where your body ends and the water begins. Because of the specially designed isolation tank, sound and light from the outside cannot reach you. Float Therapy has become wildly popular over recent years, with people praising the myriad of benefits it provides. Those who experience floating describe a heightened sense of relaxation, greater mental clarity, pain relief, increased memory function, as well as alleviation of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Now you can enjoy this experience in Collingwood! Floating in Cedar + Sage’s sensory deprevation pods has a myriad of benefits including a heightened sense of relaxation, greater mental clarity, pain relief, increased memory function, as well as alleviation of anxiety and depressive symptoms. CANCER CHAT Hey Georgian Life readers! I am Dr. Oliver Kent, Scientific Associate and cancer researcher at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. This month, I want to tell you a story of courage, perseverance and determination of a family stricken with a BRCA1 mutation. One family, four woman and they have all been told, “You have breast cancer”.

Home Auto Life Investments Group Business Farm Travel

During my research for the September Cancer Chat, I met Laura. As team leader for Metastatic Breast Cancer Collingwood, Laura and her team have participated in the CIBC Run for the Cure for twenty years. Originally, Laura and her family started a team to support their mother who had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. When they arrived on race day the organizers celebrated her mother and gave her a pink t-shirt to show she had been through a diagnosis. “It was so emotional and moving”, Laura says. The family was more connected to the cause than they had ever imaged. In the following years, Laura would learn that she, her mom and her sisters Lisa and Cathy all carry a BRCA1 gene mutation that put them at 70-85% risk of developing breast cancer in their lifetime.

Cancer is caused by genetic mutations in critical genes that control cell growth, cell division or repair damaged DNA. Ultimately, the buildup of mutations can lead to cells that grow and divide uncontrollably. Most cases of breast cancer are not caused by inherited genetic factors but rather genetic changes acquired during a person’s lifetime which occur only in some cells of the breast. These are called somatic mutations and do not cluster in families. In contrast, germline mutations are usually inherited from a parent and present in essentially every cell in the body. Hereditary mutation of BRCA1 is autosomal dominant therefore carrying a mutation in one copy of the gene (humans have two copies of most genes) is sufficient to increase the chance of developing cancer. The BRCA1 gene is crucial for the process of DNA repair which repairs DNA damage that happens as we age. When BRCA1 is defective, a different form of DNA repair is used which is more prone to error. Familial BRCA1 mutant breast tumors exhibit extreme levels of genomic instability such as high frequency of DNA deletions and reordered chromosomes. These tumors often have a triple negative breast cancer phenotype, a type of breast cancer that does not express the genes for estrogen, progesterone and HER2 receptors thus complicating treatment options. Over the years, Laura and her family have been participating in the run as part of their recovery. In 2012, after Laura’s two sisters Lisa and Cathy had received their own breast cancer diagnoses, the three woman participated in the CIBC Run for the Cure, all sporting the pink t-shirt. That year, Lisa was the first cancer survivor to cross the finish line. Laura recounts the pride she feels watching her big sister, “an amazing woman,” on stage being awarded after years of surgery and medication. The event leaves Laura full of hope even though she too has been diagnosed with the BRCA1 mutation. MARATHON OF HOPE IS STILL GOING STRONG It is often said that time flies, and I would agree, but it is still hard to believe that Terry Fox would have been 61 this year. A true Canadian hero, Terry, even with his untimely passing at the age of 22, accomplished so much and inspired so many that 39 years later we still bike, run and walk in his memory and to keep his dream of finding a cure for cancer alive. Thank you to all who took part in this year’s Collingwood run, raising over $35,000 for cancer research. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

WHERE ARE YOU GOING? It’s never too early to start thinking about what you want out of your life. When you have goals and aspirations, as we all do, it is important to consider how you are going to finance them. For clients in the earlier stages of life, accumulating wealth and preparing for future milestones is often of great importance. As people approach retirement, they start to pay more attention to relationships, family, values and how to ensure an enduring legacy. Regardless of which stage of life you are in, a comprehensive financial plan is your map of where you want to go and how you will get there. It serves as the blueprint for your investment strategy to ensure you are tracking towards reaching your most important goals. Making the commitment to having a comprehensive financial plan prepared is one of the best ways to start mapping out your financial future. This type of financial plan captures all aspects of your financial affairs including cash and debt management, tax and investment planning, risk management, goal setting, and retirement and estate planning. It can help ensure you leave no stone unturned related to your financial life and reveal potential strategies to enhance your wealth. A comprehensive financial plan can address the following questions: • Can I reach my goal when I want to and maintain my desired lifestyle? • How can I ensure I will not run out of money? • How can I minimize the taxes I pay each year? • Is my investment mix appropriate? • If I were to die unexpectedly, would my family be taken care of? • How can I protect the value of my wealth? In many cases, the key to a comprehensive financial plan is the level of customization it offers. A customized financial plan should involve the following: • In-depth discovery discussion • Protection of your current finances • Recommendations • Projection of your financial situation • An action plan

Hundreds crowded downtown Collingwood on Saturday evening, September 21st to enjoy the fantastic live music, incredible art and samplings of food and beverages at various participating shops and locations. As in years past, one of the highlights of the night was the Battle of the Brushes, where an enthusiastic crowd gathered to cheer on local artists as they created paintings within a 20 minute time limit. FOOD INSECURITY IN CANADA

OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK

Mon. to Fri. 8 – 9 | Sat. 8 – 8 | Sun. 9 – 6

In Canada, household food insecurity has been measured by Statistics Canada using the Household Food Security Survey Module (HFSSM) on the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS). This survey consists of 18 questions about the food security status of the household over the previous year, and focuses on the selfreports of uncertain, insufficient, or inadequate food access due to limited financial resources, and the impact that this had on the household’s eating patterns. The experiences reported by the households are then categorized under three categories:

• Food Secure: Household experienced either ‘no indication’ or ‘one indication’ of difficulty in accessing their preferred quantity and quality of food, due to income. • Moderate Food Insecurity: Household had to compromise the quality or quantity of their food choices, due to insufficient income. • Severe Food Insecurity: Household had disrupted eating patterns, due to insufficient income. This may have included eating less than needed, skipping meals, or going one or more days without food.

Half a million people use a food bank in Ontario In this season of abundance, it can be easy to forget that there are many families and people in our communities who are facing empty cupboards and are struggling to make ends meet. Yet, every 10 seconds, someone visits a food bank in Ontario, representing the 507,000 adults, children and seniors who access food banks more than 3 million times each year.

Your One Stop Shop!!

When we look more closely at the numbers, we begin to see a clearer picture of who these individuals and families are. Children remain one of the largest individual groups of food bank users, with 1 in 3 being a child under 18 years of age.

Whatever your business and personal needs, We are here to serve you....

• Mailbox Rental / Mail forwarding • Document Shredding • Copy/Print/Scan/Fax • Blueprint/Wide Format Printing • Pack & Ship Guarantee

While a number of investments have been made by both the provincial and federal governments in reducing child poverty in Canada, children still remain disproportionately at risk of hunger. This is particularly troubling given how essential proper nutrition is to a child’s cognitive development, physical health, and overall well-being.

The difference is...I care.

Another growing demographic is single-person households, which now represent more than half the households that visit food banks. Part of the challenge faced by single-person households is that there is only one income to cover all monthly expenses. With skyrocketing rental and housing rates, and without the flexibility provided by an additional income source, it is increasingly more difficult for a single person to adjust to unexpected changes or expenses, while living on a tight budget. There are a number of reasons as to why someone might need to visit a food bank. It may be the result of a large employer closing in the area, a recent job loss, an ongoing illness or disability, or even a local natural disaster that has created a number of unexpected expenses. Luckily, food banks are there to help individuals and families get back on their feet, no matter the circumstances that led to them walking through the doors.

This Thanksgiving, thousands of families will face going without This Thanksgiving, as many of us sit down to a full table of roast turkey, fluffy mashed potato, and delicious pumpkin pie, 507,000 of our neighbours will seek help to put even the most basic of meals on their own table. Food banks across the province will be waiting with open arms to help ensure every adult and child can experience a meal to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, and beyond. But they can’t do it alone. There are a number of ways you can help support your local food bank. Through food donations (both fresh and non-perishable) or volunteering, you can make an incredible difference for families in need in your community. Contact your local food bank to learn more about the volunteer opportunities in your community and their most needed food items. You can also support local food banks this Thanksgiving by donating to Feed Ontario. All funds raised will support the equitable distribution of food across the province to communities that need it most, as well as investments in community programs and food bank capacity. DRIVE SAFE THESE BUSINESSES CAN HELP

Do you install snow tires?

CALL US TODAY: 705-446-3480

Here are a few reasons to consider doing so…. Harsh and slippery driving conditions make winter tires in Ontario a must. Winter tires improve your ability to stop, prevent sliding, and help you be a safer and more predictable driver. As soon as the cool weather begins to creep in and the threat of snow is imminent, it’s time to start thinking about getting your winter tires installed, if you install them. While there are many proven benefits of using winter tires during the winter months, there are still many drivers who don’t install them – but this is changing. A recent survey by Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) found that two-thirds of drivers now use winter tires. This is up from only 35% of drivers in 1998. Outside of Quebec, where winter tires are mandatory, 60% of drivers in Canada use them. When you install four winter tires it can greatly improve your ability to drive in snow, frost, slush, and icy conditions. Advantages of using winter tires include: • Better traction • Improved braking and handling • Better control • Increased driver confidence when behind the wheel • Prevention of accidents and related injuries and fatalities • Fewer insurance claims • Improved road safety

GEORGIAN COLLEGE FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE

SUNLIGHT – THE SOURCE OF ALL LIFE

The new students attending Georgian College in Collingwood were charged with positive energy for their first day of school on September 3rd. Thank you all for an awesome Orientation Day! Thank you for having the Georgian Life PHOTO BOOTH there to capture some of the fun! The John Di Poce South Georgian Bay Campus offers state-of-the-art facilities easily accessed by local transit, and lots of one-on-one time with faculty and staff. They offer academic and career preparation, full-time programs, daytime, evening and weekend continuing education courses. For more info: www.georgiancollege.ca.

”Honour the healing power of nature“ - Hippocrates Light therapy - or phototherapy, classically referred to as heliotherapy consists of exposure to daylight or to specific wavelengths of light using polychromatic polarised light, lasers, light-emitting diodes, fluorescent lamps, dichroic lamps or very bright, full-spectrum light. (Wikipedia) Light therapy is thought to affect brain chemicals linked to mood and sleep, easing SAD symptoms. Yet, were you aware that over the past couple of decades, professionals and patients alike have welcomed a wealth of changes and improvements in health care. In the scientific world, there has been excitement over numerous innovative breakthroughs, with research highlighting the efficacy of various new treatments. Some of these harness the most modern state of the art techniques, while others draw on natural resources and mechanisms as old as time. Many of the most successful examples are a combination of both ancient and modern ideas, which is clearly more appealing to the general public. There is great curiosity about what science can offer, although there is also scepticism about the possible side effects and problems that new drugs and treatments may bring. More than ever, people wish to further their understanding of the knowledge and wisdom used by their ancestors and are desirous of health treatments in which they can trust. People have more questions than ever before, such as “Is it safe for everyone”? and “Are there any side effects”? They want to appreciate and understand all available options and have more control over their personal health and the health of their loved ones. As medical experts and others rely more and more on a holistic approach to preventive health care and treatments, BIOPTRON Light Therapy is found to be a welcome new addition to this field. The use of light therapy in medicine has a long history. The first light source used in photo medicine was natural sunlight. Even in ancient Egypt sunlight was used for medical treatments. Later, Hippocrates described the use of sunlight to cure various medical disorders. Although sunlight therapy had no scientific explanation at that time, the healing power of it was clear, and Roman and Arab physicians introduced light therapy into general medical use. Today it is known that the human organism transforms light into electrochemical energy, which activates a chain of biochemical reactions within cells, which are not only limited to the treated skin area but can involve the whole body. BIOPTRON Light Therapy can be used as a complementary therapy in: • the promotion of wound healing • the relief of pain or decrease of its intensity • dermatological disorders and skin problems • pediatrics • Seasonal Affective Disorders (SAD) The outstanding characteristics of BIOPTRON Light enable the light to penetrate not only the skin but also the underlying tissues. Thus, the positive effect of BIOPTRON Light is not limited to the treated skin area. BIOPTRON Light has bio-stimulative effects: when applied to the skin, it stimulates light-sensitive intracellular structures and molecules. This initiates cellular chain reactions and triggers so-called secondary responses, which are not only limited to the treated skin area. See reference nr. 1, 3 and 5. BIOPTRON Light Therapy stimulates and modulates reparative and regenerative processes as well as the processes of the human defencesystem. See reference nr. 2 and 6. The BIOPTRON Light Therapy has become accepted as a new form of treatment in prevention, therapy and rehabilitation for the noted medical indications. Health Energies of Wasaga Beach offers BIOPTRON Therapy Sessions For more information, or to book your Free Trial, give us a call or stop in at: (705) 352-3900 | 1423 Mosley St., Unit 3 Wasaga Beach www.seqex.ca

PURE FUN FOR ALL AGES It was more like a hot and sunny summer day than the beginning of fall! The Chris Keleher Team would like to say a huge thank you to their clients, friends and family for coming out to their 5th Annual Fall Festival! “This event couldn’t be possible without the amazing support of our community partners! We already are looking forward to the 6th annual Fall Festival!” Kids got sweaty on the bouncy castles and trampoline but were easily cooled down with snow cones and the adults were able to enjoy cool beverages and delicious food, as well as live music and a DJ. Did I menetion tonnes of amazing prizes given away? Georgian Life was happy to be there once again to provide some serious silliness at the photo booth! Follow Chris Keleher (and his team!) on social media to see what they are up to in the community! Photos/Story: Georgian Life Media Inc.

My adoption fee is by donation which means any amount of donation is accepted for my adoption fee. My adoption includes my neuter, up-to-date vaccinations, dewormer, and a microchip. Please make a trip over to the shelter and talk with our adoption counsellors to learn more about me. CELEBRATING OUR SHIPBUILDING HERITAGE The Collingwood Museum hosted the 3rd Annual Shipyard Social on September 7th. It was a beautiful day, a great turnout and a perfect opportunity for former Collship employees and guests to reminisce, socialize and celebrate the Shipyards, a major part of the history and marine heritage of the Town of Collingwood’s 103-year shipbuilding tradition. It was wonderful that so many Collship retirees were on hand. Thank you to the Town of Collingwood, the fantastic team at the Collingwood Museum and all those who worked so hard to host this fantastic event! Photos/ Story: Dave West Photography

SANCTUARY GARDEN DEDICATION Excerpt from HGT Press Release: “A beautiful gift has been given to our community on the grounds of Hospice Georgian Triangle’s Campbell House. The Robert C. and Ricki Thompson Sanctuary Garden was officially opened on Sept. 12th with family, friends and HGT supporters joining Ricki Thompson to celebrate her generous contribution. Robert (Bob) Thompson was a prominent lawyer in Collingwood until his death in 2011 and Ricki is a retired art teacher who worked at Georgian Bay Secondary School. Ron Emo, Past Chair of both the HGT Board and the HGT Foundation Board explained at the dedication, “The intent of the Sanctuary Garden was to create a private and tranquil space that our patients and families can use while they are here with us at Campbell House. Additionally, we will be able to use these sitting areas and outdoor “rooms” in the good weather to host some of our support programming – whether that be grief and bereavement programs, caregiver support groups or one-on-one counselling sessions.” Trish Rawn, Interim Executive Director at HGT shared, “in the five years that Campbell House has been open, HGT has cared for over 800 patients and families within our hospice. The addition of this incredible garden will bring much joy and comfort to many, many people in the days to come, and we are very grateful to Bob and Ricki for making this possible.” Photos: Dave West Photography

SWINGING IN THE RAIN It was a soggy one on the course for the Collingwood Branch Legion Golf Tournament at Duntroon Highlands on September 6th but that did not dampen the spirits of all the players. Thank you to Vogt Industries, Coast 2 Coast Plumbing and Mckeough Supply for having us there to take the photos of everyone to take home! Photos/Story: GeorgianLife Media Inc.
