GEORGIAN LIFE • SEPTEMBER 2021

A note from the Publisher September? How did it get to be September so quickly? It’s here! I know we shouldn’t wish the year away, but… autumn! I can already feel my energy levels rising, and the world just feels more ‘right’. I love it when the beach crowds thin out once summer is over, but it is usually still warm enough to spend a pleasant evening watching the sun go down, and when the breeze starts to get a bit chilly, it’s just a great excuse to pull on a hoodie. Mid-September to early October is prime time to see the changing leaves at their peak. A perfect time to take a scenic drive or a stroll. It’s hard to find anything more glorious than the maples and birch ablaze in crimson, orange, and gold with acres of trees and changing leaves giving you a background for your photos that all will envy. Not to mention, the pumpkin-spiced everything that will start popping up in stores and restaurants. As a parent, I can only hope the kids get to return to school and stay there. So many kids deperately want to be back with their classmates, activities like recess, music, and sports where they develop those friendships that may last a lifetime. I wonder how busy the spas and salons will be with parents craving a much-needed day of pampering? This region has a rich history of apple growing, and its contributions to our economy are astounding. Visit an apple orchard and pick your own apples to take home, either to eat fresh on their own or to bake and cook with. Maybe you will head out to explore the Apple Pie Trail this fall? The route consists of 28 locations in Southern Georgian Bay. You can visit as many as you wish - the trail brings together the many restaurants, ciders, orchards, and adventure partners in our community. Autumn is ideal for getting into the garden and ensuring that flowers, trees, and garden beds will over-winter successfully. In addition, the cooler days of fall enable gardeners to spend ample time outdoors without the threat of blazing heat.

A paw-some day for the dogs! Tails of the Mountain Dog Festival was a one-day outdoor event on The Farmer’s House Vacation Rental 100 acre property in the Grey Highlands. The first festival took place in 2019, and with its success, it was to become an annual event. After 2020’s cancellation, we were more determined than ever to hold a safe and fun festival in 2021. The August 7th event was a huge success and brought families and their dogs from all over Southern Ontario. It featured almost 60 vendors, an off-leash play zone, free lure coursing, agility show, games for kids and dogs, scenic walking trails, and delicious local food. The attendance numbers were double from the 2019 event, and plans for 2022 are already underway. This year’s festival raised $2,893 for the Georgian Triangle Humane Society. Every dollar makes a difference in changing the lives of pets and people in our community.

Darcy is a Registered Home Inspector (RHI), Commercial Building Inspector (CBI), New Construction Inspector (NCI), a Certified Master Inspector (CMI) and WETT Certified #11142 (wood-burning systems). Darcy is a member of the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (OAHI), the Canadian Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA), National Women in Roofing (NWIR), the International Institute Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) and the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI). Purchasing a home can be very stressful. Our inspection reports are clear and concise, providing relevant information regarding any deficiencies noted during an inspection in order to help the client make “an educated purchasing decision.” Covid19 has brought dramatic changes to the real estate market. Home buyers have found themselves in multiple offer situations and are often pressured to waive a home inspection. They are also likely to be told by the seller that only offers without conditions will be accepted. Purchasing a home without having a home inspection is never recommended however, it appears to be a unfortuate reality in today’s real estate market. Rural properties should also have well and septic inspections prior to purchase as these systems can run costs into the thousands of dollars to replace. Stories of home buyers (who did not have a home inspection prior to purchase) discovering serious deficiencies in the newly purchased home are starting to surface in the media. We suggest that any home buyer who did not have a home inspection prior to purchase contact Brick House Home Inspection Services for a “Post Purchase” home inspection upon possession. The client will gain valuable information on the current condition of the home and any urgent improvements that should be performed. Darcy MacLeod is a “Proud Pet Partner” of the Georgian Triangle Humane Society. A percentage of every client fee is donated to help dogs and cats in need.

COMMUNITY FUTURES SOUTH GEORGIAN BAY Yo u r C e n t r e Fo r B u s i n e s s

Ted Yoannou: In Your Corner Fiddlers On The Bay In this election month, I’m reminded of the old saying, “Nero fiddled while Rome burned,” the concern that arises when our government focuses on trivial matters while more important ones are neglected. And, in the spirit of “all politics are local,” there is nothing more local than my recent encounter with a Provincial Park employee. It was just after 7 am and I was walking our dog through the forest trails near the Wasaga RecPlex and then out onto the beach, between Beach Areas 5 and 6. Alone with my dog on leash, double espresso in my hand, empty beach, gorgeous morning, sunny with blue skies. Nothing better. And, then I got “the whistle.” I look back, and a Park employee is waving me back onto Shore Lane, where his pickup truck is parked. I walk back, trying to think if I know of a good lawyer to call :), and he reminds me that dogs aren’t allowed on the beach. The typical encounter ensues, albeit a surprisingly pleasant one in the circumstances. He was a nice young man, not on a power trip, just doing his job. I was calm and friendly as well; luckily the double espresso hadn’t fully kicked in yet.

Visit us to browse our selection of quality pre-owned furniture, home décor, artwork, clothing and accessories. Inventory is ever changing with new items arriving daily. Whether you are looking to consign or to purchase, we look forward to your visit!

I play the familiar wronged-citizen card, “I agree with you, but can’t we use some common sense? There’s no issue here; there’s hardly anyone around this time of the morning; my dog is friendly and on a leash. And by the way, I pay a lot of taxes.” (Memo to self: Why did I say that last thing? Don’t ever use that “I pay a lot of taxes” phrase again. Don’t be that guy. Come on, Teddy, be better than that!) (Second memo to self: Don’t be so hard on yourself. Relax, have another espresso.) He then played the standard authority figure response card, “Wait a minute, if I make an exception for you, do I need to make an exception for everyone?” He then told me he’d been out since 5 am looking for dog walkers on the beach.

16 Bruce St N Unit 1, Thornbury, ON (226) 665-3533 | lovedyoumadly

To paraphrase Oprah: “What? He said WHAT?? He was searching for scoundrels like me since WHEN???” For those of you not familiar with this part of the beach in the west end of Wasaga, it may be the safest, most law-abiding place on the planet! Especially in the early hours. A few walkers and joggers, waving to each other and exchanging pleasantries. I’ve been on this stretch of beach my whole life and have never witnessed anything hostile or disturbing in the mornings, save for a few frustrated dogs, teased by the just-out-of-reach ducks and seagulls in the shallow water. During the fall, winter, and spring months, when the beach is not patrolled, dogs walk freely and frequently in the area, and somehow everyone seems to get along without the need for any surveillance. It’s akin to the OPP arresting jaywalkers on deserted Mosley and Hurontario Streets. Uh, there’s slightly more serious, bad stuff going on. I hate to bring up our tax dollars again, but they are a limited resource and should be treated as precious. Yes, dog walking on the beach and jaywalking on the streets are against provincial rules and subject to light fines, but when there’s no problem in quiet areas, please don’t waste our public money. We’ll call if we need you. Let’s not have our public servants fiddle with trivialities while real fires are burning in the busier parts of our communities every summer, such as drownings, violence, thefts, and impaired and reckless drivers. Let’s change the patrol shift of the nice young man I encountered from a quiet part of the beach in the early morning to busy commercial areas later in the day, where and when trouble is much more likely to occur. He’ll be much more useful to all of us there. On September 20th… Vote No to Emperor Nero. Submitted by: Ted C. Yoannou, B.A., LL.B. Wasaga Beach is an age-friendly community, and the town has not forgotten its youth. As Brandon Dobbs, event organizer and emcee, said: "Skateboard Competition is back!" On Saturday, August 21st, at the Wasaga Skateboard Park at Oakview Woods, highly skilled young boys and girls competed in the challenging maze of obstacles at "Wasaga Sends It." Two groups of 12 years and under and 18 years and under made up the heats of brave, athletic youth with a passion for skateboarding. In addition, a brother and sister who were just four and five years old handled their skateboards like pros. There were plenty of prizes, and the Wasaga Beach Youth Centre was on-site selling food and drinks to the skaters and spectators. ALTHOUGH THE THOUGHT OF SELLING YOUR HOME CAN BE OVERWHELMING, WE ARE HERE TO HELP! While we are still in a Seller’s market, we aren’t seeing the frantic bidding wars in Toronto, Collingwood, or Georgian Bay that we saw a few months ago. However, there is still very limited inventory, so the prices are fairly stable. Some sellers are now willing to negotiate and we are starting to see conditional offers coming back into play which is a good thing all around. Everyone knows that having your home squeaky clean and in mint condition when listing it for sale will likely lead to a higher sales price, so how do you pull it all together? So many questions? More and more people are migrating to smaller markets from big cities like Toronto and Ottawa, so it is essential to know what these incomers are looking for in a property, a principal residence, a recreational home, or an investment property.

FOR SALE MEAFORD

FOR SALE GEORGIAN BAY

The concept of putting your property on the market can be extremely overwhelming. So, where do you start? While proper preparation of your home is essential when getting it market-ready, it might not be enough in this current real estate climate. There is a lot more you can do to ensure that the right buyers see your property. So here are a couple of tips. The best thing to do is to engage a real estate professional early in the process so they can advise you on all of the necessary steps, prioritize tasks, and set out a realistic timeline to get your home on the market. Although the thought of decluttering your home can be worse than having a root canal, it is imperative, as you want your potential buyer to have the ability to see themselves in your home. Allow them to envision how their family, furniture, and belongings would fit into this new space. Lean on your real estate professional to guide you through clearing out closets, storage rooms, furnace rooms, and sheds. Minimize the number of accessories to essential and impactful. If you have furniture that won’t fit into your new space, get rid of it, as it is unnecessary and expensive to move it twice. Repairs and small renovations go a long way to attract a higher price. Painting the interior of your home a bright white or a light colour will do wonders to freshen up the room and give the impression of more space, higher ceilings, and overall, a larger house.

Call us for a complimentary house valuation and to find out how our unique preparation & marketing program will get your home sold in record time, at the highest amount of money and the least amount of stress for you!

Rely on your Realtor to provide you with trades for small jobs, painters, junk removers, or whatever else is required. Take their advise on what are top priorities that will most affect the sale price. While your superb taste is surely self-evident, lean on your Realtor for design/colour advice as they know what buyers are looking for today. Even in the off-season, clean up the garden and yard to increase the curbside appeal of your property. Carpet cleaning and window cleaning are also important as it gives the impression of pride of ownership which suggests that you take care of your home. Potential buyers want to be assured that your home has been cared for and kept in good repair. Don’t be offended if your Realtor suggests bringing in a professional stager to revamp your home. Staging costs should be part of your negotiation with your Realtor. If you trust them to sell your home, you should probably trust them to stage it. One of the most important aspects of getting your home ready to sell is having it properly photographed. Buyers may be coming from afar to view your home, and if it doesn’t look good in the listing, it’s not likely that they will take the time to come and see it. Today, drones can be used for aerial shots and are great at capturing the splendid surroundings of the region. So good luck, be well, and may all of your selling hopes and dreams become a reality! Five ways to pamper yourself more often Pampering comes in many shapes and forms and is an effective way to reduce stress. The COVID-19 pandemic has left many people scrambling for ways to unwind without risking their health or the health of others. For more than a year, opportunities to let loose and have fun have been stymied by the cancellation of concerts, theater shows, sporting events, family holidays, and so much more in the name of public safety. However, individuals can look to coping strategies to find silver linings. Pampering oneself can be a healthy and enjoyable endeavor to explore. Pampering means different things to different people. Pampering involves indulging in self-care strategies to improve mental, physical, and emotional health. In addition, pampering can provide a respite from stress, enabling one to switch off their brain for a bit. Rest assured that pampering doesn’t have to involve significant expenses, and many pampering sessions can occur right at home. The following are five pampering ideas to explore.

Every day is unique and exciting Every day is memorable at Balmoral Place. Our impressive amenities are sure to delight you. An indoor heated saltwater pool, golf putting green, fitness centre, library, and theatre are just the beginning.

Take a nap Getting enough restful sleep is essential for your overall health. The Sleep Foundation says people who work multiple jobs or extended hours may not have enough time for sufficient sleep, and many adults do not get enough sleep. Getting seven or more hours of sleep per night is important, but you also can add to your sleep bank by taking short naps in the early afternoon. A nap can reduce stress and elevate the mood. Stick to a snooze of 30 minutes or less. Indulge in a luxurious, practical item Instead of splurging on something whimsical or unnecessary, allocate some disposable dollars to something functional - but put a luxurious spin on it. Think of buying a set of silk bedsheets or indulge in a high-end cut of meat for a family dinner. You’ll feel rewarded without feeling guilty that you were wasteful. Schedule a salon service Hair, nail, or skin services enable you to get away from home for an hour or more and devote time all to yourself. Plus, you’ll have the benefit of walking out of the salon looking like the best version of yourself.

Balmoral Place offers a variety of suite styles, delectable dining, and customized independent and assisted living service packages that are based on your individual care needs. Start making memories at Balmoral Place. Visit BalmoralPlace.ca for more information or call Kelsey at 705-444-9898 to book your personal tour.

Take a hot bath People may be pressed for time when engaging in their daily beauty and grooming routines. A 10-minute shower before work might not provide the relaxation and sense of escape you need. Set aside a time in the evening to soak in the tub and let stress, as well as aches and pains, melt away in the water. Scent the water with essential oils for a relaxing aromatherapy session.

Beware the threat of overuse injuries

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Momentum can be a valuable asset as people pursue their fitness goals. Once a fitness routine picks up steam and begins to produce results, the resulting momentum can make it easier for individuals to fully commit to exercise and ultimately achieve, if not exceed, their initial goals. A successful fitness regimen includes various components, not the least of which is sufficient rest. As individuals gain momentum and inch closer to their fitness goals, it can be tempting to skip off days. But rest is vital, allowing the body to recover and thus reducing athletes’ risk for various injuries, including overuse injuries.

What is an overuse injury? All physical activities carry a certain measure of risk. Unfortunately, athletes and fitness enthusiasts suffer injuries each day that have nothing to do with overuse. Such injuries often aren’t preventable, but overuse injuries are. Overuse injuries are caused by repetitive trauma. These injuries affect muscles or joints and may be caused by training errors or mistakes with technique. Training errors include exercising for too long or doing too much of a particular activity. The resulting strain caused by overuse leads to injury. One typical example of a technique error that can cause an overuse injury is improper form when performing strength training exercises. That’s one reason why it’s vital for anyone beginning a new fitness regimen to consult with a coach or personal trainer before starting. Coaches and personal trainers can illustrate proper techniques when using strength training equipment or lifting free weights. Such instruction can significantly reduce athletes’ risk for overuse injuries. Can other factors contribute to overuse injuries? Athletes should know those overuse injuries are not always a result of errors with their training or technique. Instead, certain intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors can increase athletes’ risk for overuse injuries. Intrinsic risk factors for overuse injury include misalignment issues, leg length discrepancy, muscle imbalance, muscle weakness, and body composition. Therefore, adults and parents of young athletes should discuss fitness regimens with their physicians or children’s pediatricians before beginning a routine. Such a discussion may uncover intrinsic risk factors athletes are unaware they have. Extrinsic risk factors for overuse injuries include surfaces, equipment, shoes, environmental conditions and nutrition. Athletes can act as their own watchdogs to prevent overuse injuries caused by extrinsic factors, examining equipment and playing surfaces to ensure they’re functional and safe, and eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet. Overuse injuries are almost always preventable. Though it can be hard to take a break from an exercise routine that’s producing results, rest is integral to a successful fitness regimen.

Cancer Chat Familial mutations in tumor suppressive genes seed a self-destructive program in our cells that can ultimately lead to cancer. However, given what we know about how our genes affect cancer incidence, can we proactively make informed decisions that may save our lives? Michele Smeh, a fitness guru, born and raised in Wasaga Beach, faced a difficult situation requiring a proactive decision when she discovered she carries a mutation in the BRCA1 gene.

Michele was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) at the age of 28. TNBC is a subtype of breast cancer that lacks hormone receptors for estrogen, progesterone, and human epidermal growth factor (HER2), making it an aggressive cancer that is difficult to treat. Because of the aggressive nature of TNBC compared to HER2-positive or hormonereceptor-positive breast cancers, based on her doctor’s recommendation, Michele had a full mastectomy followed by chemotherapy to reduce the risk of recurrence and improve her chance of survival. Prior to surgery, Michele underwent genetic testing, where it was discovered she carries a mutation in the BRCA1 gene. BRCA1 mutations occur at a surprising rate of 1 in 400 people. Although her grandmother and aunt on her father’s side both had breast cancer, familial history of BRCA1 mutation was only discovered after Michele’s diagnosis. The BRCA gene stands for BReast CAncer, but mutation of either BRCA1 or BRCA2 is associated with an increased lifetime risk of developing ovarian cancer. Variants in BRCA1 and BRCA2 are risk factors for developing fallopian tube and primary peritoneal cancer in woman, both of which contain cell types that can lead to high-grade serous ovarian cancer the deadliest subtype. Women carrying inherited BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations can opt for surgical removal of the ovaries as a strategy to significantly reduce the odds of developing ovarian cancer. The procedure is called prophylactic oophorectomy (oh-of-uh-REK-tuh-me), and for women with a BRCA mutation, can reduce breast cancer risk by 50% and ovarian cancer risk by 80-90%. In 2015, actress Angelina Jolie revealed she is a carrier of the BRCA1 variant, which prompted

GROUND FLOOR 2 BEDROOM/2 BATHROOM CONDO her decision for surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes as a preventative measure to ovarian cancer, the illness that killed her mother. It took Michele five years to make the decision to remove her ovaries, but after informed reading and speaking with her husband, they reasoned her health outweighed alternatives such as having children. Ten years postdiagnosis with TNBC, Michele had both ovaries and tubes removed. The team at Princess Margaret Cancer Center suggested Michele have the surgery at age 30, but she needed to understand the consequences of something so dramatic. Michele participated in a Women’s College Research Institute study comparing ovarian cancer mortality in women with BRCA1 mutations undergoing preventive oophorectomy or annual ultrasound screening. The study comprised 1,964 women with a BRCA1 mutation who still had their ovaries. During the ten-year period, 659 women had a preventive oophorectomy and 1,196 women elected for ovarian cancer screening with no preventive surgery. Among the women who had surgery, 1.8% were diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and there were two deaths. In comparison, of the women who had screening alone, 6.1% were diagnosed with cancer, and 27 died. Based on the results of the study, there was a 77% reduction in death associated with preventive surgery compared to screening alone. Ovarian cancer screening is now considered a nonviable alternative to preventive surgery. Oophorectomy is a safe procedure with a low risk of complication, but concerning is the impact of losing the hormones supplied by the ovaries causing early menopause. “How to be prepared is a big thing,” Michele says, “I went into menopause literally overnight!” Loss of estrogen is associated with a range of side effects, including hot flashes, depression, difficulty sleeping, and it may also affect bone and heart health. So, with permission from her oncologist, Michele has been on bioidentical hormones, recombinant hormones that are matched to natural estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone produced by the human body. Michele has regular check-ups but maintains she has been feeling great for years now. Michele’s message, “It’s a lifetime journey of learning how to stop comparing, judging, doubting and being scared. But once you get there, it’s so freeing!”

Exposed beams Exposed beams instantly evoke images of a farmhouse. This rustic renovation project can utilize natural wood or faux beams that look like the real thing. Decorative beams that have nothing to do with a home’s structural integrity can be installed by skilled do-ityourselfers. However, even faux beams are heavy, and it is recommended homeowners have an engineer assess their existing structure before installation.

Distressed wood finishes Distressing is designed to make something look less than perfect. Distressed wood finishes can be found throughout many farmhouse-style homes. Furniture and picture frames can provide the distressed look farmhouse fans are looking for. This is a relatively inexpensive project that many homeowners can tackle on their own after watching some online tutorials that recommend the right tools and techniques to get the job done right.

Kitchen sink Many components combine to create a genuinely classic farmhouse kitchen. Yet, no element is more essential than the traditional farmhouse sink. A farmhouse sink features a deep, wide basin, that is large enough to handle all the dishes after a big family meal. Old-fashioned porcelain sinks are worth consideration by homeowners who want their kitchen sinks to evoke a traditional farmhouse feel. Countertops Homeowners overhauling their kitchens to create a farmhouse feel should consider installing a large island with a walnut butcher block countertop for an authentic farmhouse feel.

How to get kids interested in cooking

HOME & PROPERTY

Parents introduce their children to all types of new hobbies and skills. There are plenty of opportunities to open kids’ eyes to the world around them. One of the most valuable lessons parents can teach their children is how to inspire a lifelong love of cooking and food. Children will vary in their ability to undertake different cooking activities. Use your own judgment to choose tasks you think are suitable for your child. Safety is the biggest concern, beyond that a little trial and error is all part of the fun.

Knowing how to cook is a vital skill that can help children become more independent and ensure they know how to survive later in life on their own. Unfortunately, so many young adults go off to college without the ability to do more than power up a microwave or boil noodles. Ordering takeout all the time is expensive, and frozen dinners often lack the nutrition of homemade dishes. Learning how to cook various foods at an early age can lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy eating and fun in the kitchen. Parents can encourage children who show early inclinations in the kitchen and help reluctant learners develop some basic cooking skills. Here are some ways to make cooking something kids can look forward to: Involve children in meal planning. Get input from your children about what they might like to see on the menu. While there may be some items that are expected, including comfort foods like mac-and-cheese, parents may be surprised at how mature their children’s palates can be. Maybe they’ve heard about a dish on television or learned about a specific ethnic cuisine at school and want to give it a try. Watch cooking shows together. How-to cooking shows and competitions appear on both cable and network television. Kids may enjoy watching Gordon Ramsay mentor young chefs, Robert Irvine help to renovate a failing restaurant, or Ann Burrell assist self-proclaimed “worst chefs” shed those monikers. In addition, cooking shows can introduce kids to food-related terminology and get them heated up about cooking their own meals.

Ask for help in the kitchen. Tailor cooking activities to youngsters’ ages. Little ones can begin by adding and stirring ingredients. As they get older, children can segue into chopping or even mixing foods on the stove. Many kids like being taste testers and offering advice on whether a food needs more spices. Teach children to wait until food is cooked before tasting. Don't let them lick their fingers or put their hands in their mouths, especially when working with raw foods such as cookie dough and raw meat or poultry. Avoid double dipping or putting spoons back into food after using them for tasting. By middle school, many kids have the wherewithal to plan meals themselves and cook them from start to finish. Be adventurous. Introduce kids to various flavours by not only cooking various dishes at home, but by dining out at different restaurants. This can encourage kids to appreciate other cultures and cuisines. When children learn to cook, they will do so by following the recipes carefully with your help. As they become older and more experienced, let them experiment with quantities, although remember that most baking recipes have specific quantities that will not work if changed. Give them opportunities to let their imagination run wild when it comes to presentation of the final dish.

Pre-winter perennial pruning pointers Pruning perennials in fall can be the first step toward creating an awe-inspiring spring garden. Foliage and football might be two things people instantly associate with fall, but there’s more to this beloved season than brightly coloured leaves and action on the gridiron. Gardeners know that spring is ideal for planning and planting their favourite flowers and most flavourful fruits and vegetables. However, seasoned gardeners know that gardening is a year-round commitment. Pruning is one of the keys to keeping perennials returning for years to come, and fall is an ideal time to take on this important task.

Em b r acE yo uR space

Pruning perennials in the fall is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, some perennials can be cut down after the first killing frost, while others can be left to benefit wildlife including birds and insects. However, understanding pruning and when to do it this fall can help gardeners lay a strong foundation for their gardens that will benefit them next spring.

Why should some perennials be pruned? Perennials that have become diseased or infested with insects should be pruned to prevent those problems from resurfacing in the spring. In addition, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, many herbaceous perennials have old foliage and dying stems after several hard frosts. If dead foliage or dying stems aren’t pruned, disease, slugs, and other pests can overwinter in the plants. Cutting these plants down to the ground after several hard frosts allows the base of the plant to remain dormant over the winter but make the plant less hospitable to disease and insects. Which perennials should I prune? The first step to pruning perennials is to recognize which need to be pruned and which can be left intact for the winter. The Old Farmer’s Almanac notes that bee balm and phlox are prone to powdery mildew and should be cut back once they’re gone. Hostas harbour slug eggs, so they, too, should be pruned after a hard frost. Hosta leaves that have fallen on the ground should be removed as well. There’s no need to cut back certain perennials if they’re healthy. For example, hardy geraniums do not require pruning in the fall, hardy perennials like garden mums are more likely to survive a cold winter if they’re left intact. That’s because the tops of such plants will collect leaves and snow for insulation and moisture throughout winter. Gardeners who are unsure about fall pruning can speak with their local gardening center for additional advice regarding which plants to cut back before winter. When to prune perennials Gardeners need not rush to prune perennials in the fall. Diseased or infested plants can be pruned at the first sight of disease or infestation, but gardeners can wait until several hard frosts have occurred before they prune healthy perennials. In gardening terminology, a hard frost refers to when temperatures drop below 28 F (-2.22 C). Several hard frosts kill the uppermost growth of most perennials, making this an ideal time to prune them.

How to create a sunroom

Design, Build, Renovate

Sunrooms are a great place to take nature no matter the weather. As fall inches closer to winter, it’s not uncommon for people to look to the coming cold with a degree of lament. Spring, summer, and fall provide ample opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors, but such chances are few and far between once the winter freeze settles in. Though winter might compel the masses to huddle up inside, there’s still a way to take in the great outdoors on cold winter days and nights. It might not prove an exact substitute for summer nights around the fire pit, but a sunroom affords homeowners a chance to marvel at snowy winter landscapes without venturing out into the cold. Sometimes referred to as “all-season rooms,” sunrooms can make for a great retreat on quiet summer mornings or crisp autumn afternoons. In addition, sunrooms can be treated as blank canvasses, which makes decorating them more fun. Nonetheless, a few tricks of the trade can help homeowners turn their blank canvasses into welcoming spaces to take in all that nature has to offer throughout the year.

PRE-LISTING INSPECTION

It is essential to define the purpose of using the sunroom before you begin decorating it. For example, when the weather gets too chilly to dine outside, will the sunroom serve as an alternative dining space in the same way patios and decks do during the warm weather? Or do you want a sunroom to act as a reading room? Though it’s possible to make sunrooms multipurpose spaces, it may be hard to create a relaxing vibe in rooms too crowded with furnishings or too busy. Defining how the space will be used also makes it easier when shopping for furnishings.

For example, a year-round sunroom will need to be heated, while a three-season sunroom likely won’t require heating. Cooling might be a concern on hot summer afternoons. Still, many homeowners will probably spend such days outside anyway, so cooling the room may be as simple as installing a ceiling fan and ensuring windows can be opened to let fresh air in. Homeowners who want a year-round sunroom should install insulated glass to keep the room even warmer when the mercury dips. Bright colours can make sunrooms feel inviting and are a perfect match with all the natural light already in the room. White walls and ceilings can maximize the warm illumination of the natural light pouring in from the windows. Brightly coloured cushions, pillows, and area rugs with similarly hued colours and patterns can add visual interest and texture to a sunroom. Make use of a view. Homeowners needn’t direct too much of their focus on decor if their sunrooms come with a view. Art on the walls and other decorative items around the room are less important if a sunroom affords a view of the river, lake, or a forest that attracts local wildlife. In rooms with a view, arrange furniture so residents and guests can comfortably look outward and take in all the surrounding landscape.

Tips before deciding to do a DIY demolition Home improvement projects can range from relatively inexpensive undertakings to complex endeavors that cost homeowners thousands of dollars. To make expensive projects more affordable, homeowners may look for ways to pitch in, and do-it-yourself demolition is a common way to cut costs. Due to geographical fluctuations in price and the scale of a project, it’s hard to pinpoint just how much homeowners can save by doing demolition work themselves. Though it’s possible to do so safely, homeowners can take steps to determine if it’s in their best interest to take on a DIY demolition or leave it to the professionals. Conduct a cost analysis. Demolition projects seem simple; but they often require equipment most homeowners don’t have on hand. Rentals can be considered in such instances, but the cost of renting equipment can reduce the amount of money homeowners are saving by going it alone. For example, homeowners may be able to pull up vinyl or tile flooring independently, but not all floors are installed the same. Some floors may have been glued more effectively than others, making it hard and/or time-consuming to pull them up by hand. A walk-behind floor scraper can make it easier to remove such floors, but that equipment must be rented. A cost analysis comparing the contractors’ demolition cost estimate and the cost of DIY, complete with equipment rental projections, can give a more accurate picture of how much money homeowners will save by going it alone. If the savings of DIY are negligible, homeowners should probably let the contractor handle the demo. Speak with your contractor. Before saying they’ll do the demo work on their own, homeowners should speak with their contractors to get an accurate idea of what the project will entail. Demolition projects may seem simple enough, but contractors can illustrate the correct way to do things to minimize potentially costly damage. Some contractors may offer to help homeowners start the demo project and then leave them to their own devices once they get a knack for what to do. Once homeowners see what it will take, they can then decide if DIY is best for them. Enlist help. No DIY demo should ever be done alone. The risk for accident and injury is simply too great for homeowners to go it alone. Homeowners who can’t enlist some volunteers to pitch in should leave the job to the professionals. DIY demolition can save homeowners money, but such projects are not necessarily as simple as they seem. Homeowners should take steps to see exactly what they’re getting into before they volunteer to take on demo duty.

Safety first when clearing land Safety should be the utmost priority as homeowners prepare to clear land on their properties. New homeowners often see their homes as blank canvasses. Looking at a home as a blank canvas is typically associated with its interior, but it also can apply to landscaping.

boots should be worn when clearing land. Homeowners also may want to invest in a hard hat if they will be cutting branches off of trees or cutting trees down. A face shield also may be a good bet depending on the scale and potential dangers of the project.

Homes are empty of furniture and decorative items like photos and art on the walls when new homeowners move in. That makes it easy to see the interior of a home as a blank canvas. But that’s not always so easy in the garden or the yard, where the previous owners might have left behind brush, overgrown plants or trees, and

Contact your utility company Overhead power and telephone lines are visible to the naked eye, and homeowners should be conscious of those lines as they cut any high branches. But underground lines are not visible, and that can make clearing land dangerous. Therefore, homeowners are urged to contact their utility companies before they begin to clear any land so they can determine if any underground lines are beneath areas they intend to clear out.

other eyesores. A landscape must be cleared out before it can be seen as a blank canvas. Though clearing land may seem like a straightforward process, no one knows what lies beneath overgrowth or neglected yard or garden areas. Do-it-yourselfers can typically clear land on their own, but some safety strategies should be kept in mind to ensure the process goes smoothly. Wear appropriate PPE Personal protective equipment should be worn when clearing land. The appropriate PPE when clearing land includes attire and other gear that many homeowners likely already have on hand. For example, a long-sleeve shirt, punctureproof pants and gloves, and slip-resistant work

Get a lay of the land Carefully inspect the area to be cleared before starting the project. Inspections can reveal the density of any vegetation that may need to be removed and reveal any harmful plants like poison ivy growing. Many DIYers can remove small trees on their own, but a professional tree service may be necessary for large trees or those located close to the house. Homeowners won’t want to cut down a tree, even a small one if it can potentially fall onto the house. In addition, homeowners unfamiliar with chippers or stump grinders may be better off hiring a tree service to clear trees. Don’t go it alone No one should clear land alone. Even small projects are best tackled by at least two people. Should someone get injured during the project, the presence of another person ensures someone can immediately call for help. In addition, clearing land can be more difficult than it appears, and having at least two people to pull old shrubs or carry tree branches reduces the risk of injury.

Rockin’ the Notty On August 7th, the Nottawasaga River was host to Rockin' the River's inaugural event, organized by the Town of Wasaga Beach, Free Spirit Tours, many musicians, and a tonne of volunteers. People came to canoe, kayak, or stand up paddleboard down the river and hear different musical acts along the way. The river paddle started with Johnny Hawk and Cynthia, who did a blessing on the water along with drumming and singing. Then there were the soothing violin sounds of Victoria Yeh, the fun duo 6 Chickens in the Kitchen, followed by the vibes of Lotus Sound's didgeridoo and sitar. Next, the music ramped up with the delightful duo Too Nice playing some reggae and ska music, then Ridin' the Pine, which had everyone dancing in their boats, followed by Chris Scerri and Jon Zaslow, who knocked it out of the park! The Erin McCallum Band played some amazing Blues music, and to finish off, the paddlers were greeted by the band In Dispute. See you on the river next year! What’s In The Sky This Month: The quest for clusters and star clouds As September rolls in, so too do darker nights. The sun starts setting earlier, crossing the celestial equator and reaching autumnal equinox on September 22. Here in Ontario, the summer weather hasn’t left completely, but the cooler systems mean we should hopefully see some beautifully clear nights as the light fades. Solar System The planets are relatively quiet this month. Saturn and Jupiter continue their fellowship, strolling through Capricorn together pretty much all night through September. Just like last month, if you have a clear view of the southwest on September 9, look for bright Venus near a thin crescent Moon as the sun sets (if you miss it, don’t worry — the pair will meet again on October 9). Unfortunately, this month, Mercury and Mars will be setting rather too close to the sun to get a good look at them. Deep sky The Moon reaches its new phase on September 7. It will start setting relatively early during the week afterward, leaving you with a good window for deep-sky observing of late summer constellations. While Scorpius is moving too close to the sun to see, you can still take a few last glimpses of Sagittarius and its gems before it, too, heads out of view for the winter.

28

After sunset, you’ll find Sagittarius in the south. It looks like a teapot. The teapot’s “spout” points to the Large Sagittarius Star Cloud, while the “lid” is around many relatively bright, easy-to-find objects like the Lagoon Nebula, the Small Sagittarius Star Cloud, and oodles of open and globular clusters. Clusters are a great introduction to deep-sky objects. Open clusters are beautiful groups of young stars that burn hot and fast, loosely bound together. Messier 23 is one, and it’s thought to be about 330 million years old. Globular clusters, on the other hand, are more calm and sedate, made of very old stars that burn slowly and are tightly bound together by gravity. Messier 54 is thought to be around 13 billion years old, while Messier 28 is estimated to be about 12 billion years old. If you find one of these globular clusters - they look like round, grey, hazy spots through your telescope or binoculars - just think for a second about the fact that you’re probably looking at the oldest thing you’ve ever seen. DRIVE INTO

FALL

THESE LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN HELP YOU WITH YOUR DRIVING NEEDS

How to keep car interiors clean Clean cars can make driving more enjoyable and even more healthy. Oil changes, tire rotations, and even car washes may garner the bulk of drivers’ attention concerning vehicle maintenance. But, various smaller undertakings, including keeping vehicle interiors clean, are worthy of drivers’ attention.

Be mindful of seating materials. When cleaning seats, drivers should be mindful of the materials those seats are made of. Cloth seats should be cleaned differently than leather and vinyl, and all seats should be vacuumed prior

Dust and dirt can accumulate in a vehicle over time, making for a less comfortable ride. Keeping vehicle interiors clean can make car and truck cabins more welcoming for drivers and their passengers, and such maintenance is inexpensive and straightforward. Focus on the floors. The floors in a car face all that weather has to offer. In winter, boots may track snow and deicing solutions like salt into a vehicle’s cabin. In summer, sand from the beach or dirt from hiking trails may find its way in. Some drivers use the same floor mats year-round, but there’s an advantage to switching based on the seasons. Fabric floor mats in summer will hold on to dirt and keep it from spreading. Beachgoers will appreciate that after tracking sand into their cars. In the winter, swap fabric floor mats with rubber or plastic alternatives, as these mats will hold melting snow, rain, or salt, preventing them from staining the floors.

Clean the inside of your car’s windshield. Use an interior glass cleaner to clean the interior windshields and windows. These surfaces can accumulate a significant amount of dirt due to interior vapours and air pollution. Use a glass cleaner that contains alcohol. Interior glass cleaners are designed to prevent streaking and film buildup, which can compromise drivers’ vision.

Take on touchscreens. Modern vehicles have touchscreens that can quickly accumulate dust and fingerprints. Avoid substances like solvents, alkaline or acidic solutions, contributing to staining or discolouration on the screen. Instead, soak a clean cloth in lukewarm water and lightly wipe the surface of touch screens.

conditioner to prevent the leather from drying out. When cleaning cloth seats, an upholstery cleaner can be applied to stains; just be sure to follow instructions carefully. Cleaning products are not all the same, and application techniques may vary. For example, a scrub brush can be used to work cleaning solutions into the seats, and any lingering moisture can then be wiped away with a microfibre cloth.

Various medications can be dangerous for drivers Impaired driving claims thousands of lives every year. Drivers no doubt recognize the dangers of driving after consuming alcohol or cannabis, but consuming other, seemingly less threatening substances also can put drivers in danger, even during times of day when drivers would otherwise think the roads are as safe as possible. Many people recognize that prescription drugs tend to be stronger than over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. That recognition may naturally compel them to be extra cautious before driving after taking prescription meds. The potential side effects of OTC drugs also merits caution on the part of drivers. It’s vital that drivers recognize certain facts about OTC and prescription drugs and keep them in mind before getting behind the wheel.

PLEASE DON’T TEXT & DRIVE Because it only takes a second to change a life forever… Protect your own life and the lives of others by making a pledge to never text or talk on the phone while driving. If you are in the car with a distracted driver, let them know it bothers you and ask them to drive phone-free. A message from your friends at Georgian Life Media Inc.

The side effects of OTC drugs can be serious. It’s easy to write off the side effects of medications that can be purchased as easily as a candy bar. However, OTC medications can induce drowsiness, cause nausea, cloud drivers’ judgment, and adversely affect drivers’ hand-eye coordination. Each of those effects can make it dangerous for drivers to get behind the wheel, so it’s imperative that drivers avoid driving if any of the aforementioned symptoms appear.

Some prescription medications have been linked to higher risk of crashing. Opioids, sedatives, muscle relaxants, and some antidepressants have been associated with increased crash risk. When prescribed such medications, patients should discuss how to approach driving with their physicians. Mixing medications can impair driving ability. Medications that do not cause side effects on their own may still prove harmful if mixed with other drugs. Mixing drugs with alcohol also can produce side effects that impair driving ability, even for drivers who do not feel as though they consumed an amount of alcohol that would normally compromise their ability to drive safely. Recognizing the ways prescription and OTC medications can impair driving ability is a vital component of safe driving.

His leadership and dedication were unwavering and his commitment to Wasaga Beach continued after he left municipal politics. He was a good friend, a mentor, ethical to the core, and someone I will miss greatly.” George Vadeboncoeur, chief administrative officer for the Town of Wasaga Beach, said Patterson loved his community and always wanted the best for it. “Cal found serving the people of Wasaga Beach to be quite rewarding. Sitting on council, dealing with the various issues of the day, ensuring the financial stability of the municipality, and planning for the town’s future brought him great joy. He witnessed the town accomplish so much over the years and was always optimistic about the future. I was always amazed how he juggled a successful full-time career in the private sector with his council responsibilities. In his many travels outside the community, Cal was a great goodwill ambassador for the town,” Vadeboncoeur said. BUSINESS PROFILE:

The Water Store Collingwood:

The best water in town

guaranteed!

Michael and Shari Morgan purchased The Water Store Collingwood in December 2019 from Steve and Isabel Lounds. They currently have seven highly skilled and knowledgeable employees dedicated to achieving excellent customer service and fantastic results, whether it’s by providing great-tasting water or water solutions for your home and office. Fortunately, Steve stayed as a consultant, and Isabel continues to work at The Water Store full time, offering continuity and familiar faces for their loyal customers. Michael and Shari are committed to their customers, making sure they feel 100% supported when making a significant purchase or having any issues. They stand behind all of the highest quality products they carry in-store. Do you need or want to improve the source water you’re currently getting from your municipal or well water? The Water Store provides installation, service, and maintenance of home and commercial water treatment equipment, ensuring your water is safe and potable, as well as enjoyable to drink. Their water treatment equipment is state-of-the-art, and they use the latest in water treatment techniques to ensure the best possible results. Whether your water problem is staining, terrible odour, discolouration, bacteria, or improving the operation of your dishwasher, hot water heater, or humidifier, The Water Store has the application that will solve your problem and ensure the maintenance of your valuable fixtures and appliances. They offer various products such as water softeners, chemicalfree iron and sulphur filters, reverse osmosis drinking water systems, ultraviolet (uv) disinfection systems, and tannin filters. Fill ‘er up! Suppose you are looking to buy great-tasting, incredibly clear, and pure reverse-osmosis drinking water for your home, cottage, or business. In that case, they have in-store water stations for self-serve and delivery customers. The Water Store uses Collingwood’s local municipal

source water and further purifies it by softening and putting it through their high volume reverse-osmosis system. This allows them to remove all the chemicals, micro-plastics, pharmaceuticals and other impurities. Then, before you dispense this great-tasting super-pure water into water jugs, it passes through an Ultra-Violet disinfection system to ensure the water is 100% bacteria-free. This water is a great value compared to the cost financially and environmentally of using single-use bottled water. Staff is always on hand to help you with your water purchase, whether it is to show you how to rinse and fill your water jugs or carry the water to your car for you. The Water Store carries healthy lifestyle products such as personal drinking bottles, hiking and camping purification systems (i.e. Grayl and Lifestraw, etc.), water coolers, and products for the DIY’ers who maintain their own water equipment.

We love being part of this community, and having our own business here makes it a great opportunity to meet more people. We both love to work directly with our customers and make sure that we put excellent service above all else. We put energy into everything we do. We are grateful for our customers who have stayed with us and are new to us, especially during this past year. Our staff has managed so well and put so much effort into everything required to keep our doors open through a pandemic. Helping resolve issues or providing people with the right solution for their needs makes this business enjoyable every day. Water is one of the most vital parts of life and health - we never want to take it for granted, and we want to make sure we share that passion with our community and customers. Be it municipal or well water; it is important to understand the water we use in our daily lives.

The Water Store Collingwood has put safety protocols in place to serve you better during this time, including drop-offs, curbside pickups, and their “drop bottles outside door” program. They are practicing enhanced cleaning of the store and bottles and social distancing in the store. If you choose the “drop bottles outside door” service, they’ll do all the work so you can relax in your car or grab some fresh air. Service and maintenance technicians are available for all your immediate needs.

THE BENEFITS OF FRESH PASTA AND SAUCE There is a common misconception that eating pasta and sauce is unhealthy and has negative health consequences. This could not be further from the truth. In fact, both fresh pasta and freshly milled sauce, besides being delicious, have a number of health and wellness benefits. They provide a great source of vitamins, minerals, and fibre and help with bodily functions like blood sugar regulation. Pasta has been a dietary staple globally for thousands of years. Although Italy is the undisputed epicentre of pasta, historically, it has also been mentioned in Greek and Chinese literature, as early as the 4th century AD.

Weight Loss

Saucy! PASTAS

Pasta is a fat-free, low-sodium food that can fit right in with your weight loss plan. One cup of cooked pasta contains just 100 calories, in additions to valuable vitamins and minerals. It also fills you up so you don’t feel hungry while trying to lose weight! Pasta has a low Glycemic Index (GI) so it does not cause sugar in the blood torise quickly. The GI measures how rapidly a carbohydrate triggers a rise in blood sugar - the higher the number, the greater the blood sugar response. A low GI means a slower rate of digestion, which can help with appetite control.

Glycemic Index Chart: LOW GI <55

Let’s get

MEDIUM GI 55-69

Over 30 varieties of fresh pasta shapes and flavour infusions are made fresh daily, ranging from traditional to unique and novel. An incredible array of infused pasta such as Fresh Herb & Garlic, Spinach, Lemon Peppercorn, Sundried Tomato, and more exotic varieties like Squid Ink, Lemon & Sage, Porcini Mushroom, and Wild Leek infused. The selection changes daily, as do the daily specials.

SAUCES

A dozen different sauces are prepared using premium San Marzano tomatoes slow-cooked with fresh herbs and produce. Meat sauces use premium, local, naturally raised meats and premium fresh seafood. Many varieties of sauces are available: Vegetarian, Rosé, Beef Bolognese, Chicken Breast Cacciatore, Fire Roasted Red Pepper, Roasted Red Pepper Rose, Tracy’s Arrabbiata, Puttanesca, Caper & Kalamata, and Heretic Spirits a la Vodka - as well as Alfredo and Pesto, three vegan and eight vegetarian options - all gluten-free.

HIGH GI >70

Despite its’ bad reputation, pasta has many health benefits. Pasta only has 100 calories per cup. It is a great source of carbohydrates for people who are active or athletic. The carbs are easily digestible and are low on the glycemic index, which helps regulate blood sugar and helps one feel full after eating. Pasta optimizes glycogen in the muscles and liver - ideal for serious or competitive athletes. Regular pasta has up to 6 grams of fibre per cup, great for digestion. Saucy Pasta’s specially formulated Gluten Free pasta has up to 12 grams of fibre per cup - a great source for plant-based diets. Pasta is also high in folic acid, essential for pregnant women. Fresh-milled tomato sauce also has significant health benefits. Tomatoes are rich in lycopene - a powerful antioxidant that helps fight free radicals in the body - which are believed to be a source of cancer. Tomato sauce is also low in fat. It offers 25% of the recommended daily requirement of Vitamin A and 50% of daily Vitamin C requirements. Freshly milled sauce is also a an excellent source of B6 - an effective antiinflammatory. It is also a good source of ProVitamin A, an effective immune system booster. One cup of freshly milled sauce has up to 6 grams of fibre, aiding digestion, blood sugar regulation, and cholesterol levels.

MEALS

Freshly prepared meals like ravioli, cannelloni, and four varieties of lasagna made daily: Vegetarian, Fire Roasted Red Pepper, Beef Bolognese, and Chicken Breast Cacciatore. Fresh, frozen, and gluten-free are available. If you prefer to make your own lasagna, fresh lasagna sheets are available.

AND MORE

Other specialties include in-house fresh baked daily demi-baguettes and Rosemary Foccacia, made-from-scratch Tiramisu, Fresh Lobster and Ricotta Cannelloni, Jumbo Stuffed Spinach & Ricotta or Beef Stuffed Shells, Lemon Biscotti, Fresh Shaved Parmesan Reggiano, Brie/Walnut/Pear Ravioli and much, much more. Selections change daily.

With these facts in mind, one can now look at plate of fresh pasta and sauce without apprehension and guilt. Pasta and sauce are excellent sources of energy, fibre, vitamins and antioxidants… and pure deliciousness.
