Ray’s Place Camera Club Every month, I have the opportunity to host a group of young people who want to improve their photography skills. The Camera Club is one of several after school clubs sponsored by Ray’s Place, a Youth Centre in Creemore. It’s a great way for youth to learn new skills and meet new friends. In this session the students received hands on training in studio and window light portraits as well as in still life photography. Ray’s Place Youth Centre in Creemore also hosts an Athletic, Gaming and Classic Car Clubs. www.raysplaceyrc.com Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography

10th Annual Pete Would Go Family Ski Day

Spring is in the air

This year’s edition of the Pete Would Go Family Ski Day at the Osler Bluff Ski Club was particularly bittersweet. The bitter... that 2013 marks the 10th anniversary of Pete Crompton’s untimely passing at the age of 27, killed in a tragic boating accident. The sweet... that the Foundation named in his honour and maintained by family and friends has raised a lot of money over the last decade for wonderfully deserving charitable organizations! This year the recipients of the funds raised were the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital Foundation ($10k) and Alpine Canada ($7.5k). Congratulations and thanks to all who organized, participated and supported this awesome event. We miss you Pete, we’ll never forget you and yes, Pete Would Go and did as we felt your spirit on the slopes and in the clubhouse that day! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

The sun is warmer, birds are searching for new nesting places and gardening enthusiasts everywhere are feeling the urge, once again, to till the soil. Now is the time to think about what has worked in your garden and what hasn’t, what needs replacing or just face lifted. And, what went wrong! Was it inappropriate sun exposure or the wrong soil conditions that made your plants look distressed? Or was it simply a selection of plants that required more attention than you were prepared to devote? The Collingwood Garden Club (Horticultural Society) may be able to help!! Come to their Annual Plant Sale, Saturday, May 25, from 8:00 – 12:00 noon, at the Trinity United Church on Maple Street, their new location for 2013. Meet with CHS Master Gardeners knowledgeable in many aspects of horticulture, chat with experienced members eager to share their successes and ideas, and check out hundreds of plants (perennials, annuals, shrubs, vegetables etc.) for sale and all cultivated from their very own gardens.

Global Expressions Global Expressions is a new retailer to downtown Collingwood, with a focus on fair trade products and locally made merchandise. Fair Trade means that the people who grow or make the products are paid fair wages and fair market value for their work. Artists and growers receive fair compensation for their effort; it is an anti-poverty and anti-child labour initiative. Product lines in the store include hand made jewelry, textile and knitted items, home décor pieces along with coffee, tea and chocolate. Products are not produced in large manufacturing environments, but rather small cooperatives or in some cases, cottage style (members of extended families) businesses. In third world countries very few materials are wasted and the people who live there use found items to create pieces of art, for example, decorative wall pieces from recycled oil drum lids or beaded jewelry from recycled paper. Besides fair trade products, Global Expressions also carries a variety of locally made merchandise including hand made pottery and wood carvings, maple syrup, honey and skin care products. The merchandise brought into the store is unique, hand crafted and colourful. By supporting fair trade, consumers are creating a sustainable environment for disadvantaged people around the globe. Rounding out the product line at Global Expressions is a delicious selection of locally made gourmet chocolates and baked goods. These products are carried in the store as a commitment to support our fellow local talented entrepreneurs. GLOBAL EXPRESSIONS 9 Hurontario Street, Collingwood www.globalexpressions.ca 226-200-0478

BMFA Guest Artist Series 2013 Opening Reception The BMFA’s Guest Artist Series kicked off with a pair of artists who share an interest in machines and their creative possibilities. Laura De Decker with her show Interzone 003 is trained as a painter, but has now turned her sights, and an abiding interest in colour, to computer programming as a method for generating her ideas. Steven White offers a series of works in a show he calls Lost Machines featuring a selection of new sculptural constructions as well as some large-scale lithographic prints on reclaimed plywood. An intriguing and thought provoking show, we give thanks to series sponsors, Crozier & Associates, Consulting Engineers, Collingwood and Parks, Recreation and Culture, Collingwood. In its 5th year, the showcase has been increasing in popularity and it was a packed house with give aways, free treats and beverages and an overall great time. The sun was shining and it was a perfect day to learn more about all of the wonderful businesses in our tightly knit community. ABUNDANCE FOUND At this time of year while old snow lingers in the woods and on the hills, there comes a day when the wind begins to shift bringing promise with the fragrant odour of new growth and freshly turned soil. This is the turning point of winter and the rhythm of changing seasons. The harmony of spring is the embodiment of gratitude. Naturally, we learn to expect a fair amount of order and predictability in our lives. Take the opportunity during this time to shift focus on what you have rather than what your life lacks.

Gratitude comes from a deep place. It does not arrive wrapped in a beautiful package. It slips in at the most unexpected times. The value of gratitude is boundless. It is surviving the worst thing you can imagine (at the time) and then realizing you are still standing. It builds your character; it gives you opportunities for improvement, and it will teach you valuable lessons. Gratitude helps us put things in proper perspective. If we strive to learn from adversity, this strength and resilience will result in growth. Life is our own creative possibility. Social contribution and admiration for hard work improves those giving, as well as those receiving. This gratitude that many are thankful for, will outlive the life of the giver. We need to measure what we have inside us rather than the number of things we stand to lose. Wealth arises from gratitude. “Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have, was once among the things you only hoped for.”--Epicuris Spring is a time of transition between the extremes of winter and summer. It is the opportune time to give way to new thinking. Beautiful things can be found everywhere and in everyone. Equilibrium and balance are created with gratitude. Fly It Forward – Women of Aviation Week

A Greener Way to Clean

Girls were invited to participate in a free discovery flight, aviation presentations and meet some of the women working in the various aspects of the airline industry. Meadford’s Trowbridge Cleaning Centre is excited to announce its expansion into Collingwood and the surrounding area, by going Green. From small beginnings, Trowbridge Cleaning Centre has been providing professional quality dry cleaning to Meaford for over 30 years. In 2006, Derron Bodell and Laura McFarlane purchased the enterprising business with the idea to continue the passion of cleaning, but with an eye to providing a safe and responsible alternative to help the environment. “We want our business to reflect the world we live in today, for our customers, employees and our children” says Mr. Bodell.

In November 2012, Trowbridge Cleaning Centre invested in the top of the line, German engineered Wet Cleaning system pioneered by Miele. It is the first of its kind in Georgian Bay! Wet Cleaning is the non-toxic, solvent free solution to “Dry cleaning”. Miele’s system uses water, and detergants derived from citrus and banana oil to effectively remove stains from all fabrics, including those with “Dry Clean Only” labels, and is considered as safe, if not safer, than the wet washing people do at home. “Wetcleaning chemicals are biodegradable and generally benign. As a basis of comparison, the impacts associated with wetcleaning are essentially identical to the environmental, health, and safety impacts associated with laundering.” – US Environmental Protect Agency Case Study (http://www. epa.gov/dfe/pubs/garment/wsgc/wetclean.htm). At the same time, Trowbridge Cleaning Centre seized on an opportunity to expand. The company took over the site of the former Blue Mountain Cleaners in Collingwood, and now provides safe, effective and non-toxic cleaning to close to 60,000 residents in Meaford, Thornbury, Blue Mountain, Collingwood, Wasaga Beach and Creemore. “We are thrilled to see our little company grow, providing employment opportunities not only for our existing staff, but for the others we’ve had to hire” says Mrs. McFarlane. The company is currently undergoing a revamp of its branding, and will soon unveil a new name and logo to better reflect the new process and geographic locations it represents.“We’re commited to this business, and the communities we represent,” says Mr. Bodell. For more in information, or to book a tour, please contact Derron Bodell: dbodell@sympatico.ca 519.372.7075 or 705.445.2811.

Abby Stec, CEO of Green Leaf Distribution, presents a cheque in the amount of $10,000 to Jory Pritchard Kerr, Executive Director, Collingwood General & Marine Hospital Foundation, for the hospital’s “New Age of Care Campaign”. In making this commitment, Abby Stec, CEO of Green Leaf said, “We make the environment a priority. The partnerships we forge in our community help us find sensible, sustainable solutions, to everyday environmental challenges. We invite you to join us in committing to the environment by becoming a Green Leafer. • I will make sensible choices to reduce my impact on the environment and ensure a better life for my family. • I will make environmentally conscious decisions when looking for ways to save money. • I will look to nature for solutions and lead by example to enjoy life to the fullest. What’s in the acid? It’s more natural than you think! Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) is a family name for a group of acids that occur naturally in foods. AHA’s work on the skin to achieve proper exfoliation by reducing the thickness and to activate hyaluronic acid which will retain greater amounts of moisture in the skin and maintain appropriate hydration levels. They diminish pore size, improve sun-damaged and aged skin, dryness and acne. There are six key AHA’s found in various plants and fruits; glycolic acid found in sugar cane juice; lactic acid from sour milk and tomato juice; malic acid found in apples; tartaric acid from grapes and wine; and citric acid found in lemons, pineapples, oranges, and other fruits. AHA’s are safe in cosmetic products at concentrations less than or equal to 10% with the product’s final pH not to be below 3.5. Always use a broad spectrum sunscreen when using AHA’s. Collingwood Seniors Got Talent

Steve’s

...and a crowded house at the Leisure Time Club would agree. There was enough talent to fill an afternoon with entertaining dance, vocal, and instrumental acts... and even a Tai Chi demonstration. These may be seniors but they have more energy, talent and drive than most of us many years younger. Great event and thanks for the enjoyable afternoon! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

The Collingwood Food Co-op Is shopping ‘local’ important to you? Would you like to keep more of your dollars in your community? Do you feel that it is important to help local farmers stay on their land? You are not alone; there are currently over 200 households here in South Georgian Bay who have purchased Shares in the Collingwood Community Food Co-op (CCFC). And, you can too! Values: CCFC is here to provide local and organic, nongenetically modified foods, within our community. We are committed to working with the social and educational components of food, the industry of it and the politics. We use the values set up by fellow modern co-ops that have been in existence for over 150 years. We keenly support our local producers to sustain our regional and local economy and give a good clean choice for food, simply grown without dependence on chemical based methods. Membership: Being a member of the CCFC means that you are part owner of your own grocery store!

Each membership has a vote on big decisions being made by the co-op. Also, members receive a discount off all store purchases. It is easy to join the Collingwood Community Food Co-op; details online at www.ccfcoop.ca. Store: Our focus is on local, organic, non-GMO foods. Not just food for your pantry and refrigerator though; pick up lunch or homemade entrées and sides for the family dinner. You do not have to be a member to shop for the unique products that are in the store! Kitchen: The on-site kitchen prepares a variety of foods for sale in the store (in March we started with soups and banana bread). This will also be a meeting place for educational purposes; learn how to make meals, ferment foods, preserve your veggies, make jams, and more! This space is also available for rent; contact the store for more information. 705.444.6200 We welcome you to drop by and see for yourself what all the fuss and excitement is about. You will find us at 65 Simcoe Street; across from the public library.

Wasaga Beach – A Healthy Community In 2006 Wasaga Beach Town Council recognized the importance of promoting the town as a healthy community for its citizens through the creation of the Wasaga Beach Healthy Community Network, an advisory committee to Council, whose role is to act as a link between Town Council and the citizens of Wasaga Beach and to advise Council on matters relating to active and healthy living, the environment and the creation of a sustainable and healthy future for the town. Membership on the Network includes local residents, a member of Town Council and representatives from several local and area organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, the Wasaga Beach Accessibility Advisory Committee, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, Ontario Parks, the Environment Network, the local Community Policing Committee and a member of town staff who acts as a resource to the Network.

Since its inception, the Network has been involved in a number of exciting initiatives including the development of an anti-idling bylaw for the town, the creation of a municipal Active Transportation and Way Finding Plan designed to promote active and healthy living through the promotion of the use of non-motorised vehicles of all kinds, the implementation of a Regional Share the Road Program to promote responsible use of our roads and highways by cyclists and motorists and the implementation of an annual educational/ environmental canoe trip to promote the flora and fauna of the Nottawasaga River. It has also worked with several local universities on research projects including the preparation of reports on the benefits and risks of wind energy and storm water management along the local beaches. In addition to these and other projects, the Healthy Community Network works to promote Wasaga Beach as a healthy community

through the use of local media and participation in events which showcase local healthy lifestyle initiatives.Currently, the Network is working with Town staff, the Wasaga Beach Garden Club, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, the South Georgian Bay Community Health Centre and several local residents on the establishment of a 50 plot community garden which is scheduled to open later this Spring. For further information contact Peter at 705 422 1469.

Collingwood in the still of the night Erik Crighton gave this photo to the mayor as a gift for all that she does for the town. The piece was done very recently; it was from a photo taken in January when we had all that thick snow. The time on the clock in the photo reads 2am, Erik was out with his tripod capturing Collingwood in the still of the night. Erik used to live in Collingwood when he was a teenager and attended high school here, so he really feels at home. After graduating with honours from The Academy of Design in Toronto, Erik was hired by John and Ola to work as a Graphic designer & Artist at Village Memories: a new store at Blue Mountain. Village Memories Photo Art Studio specializes in creating timeless art with your photographic memories. With state of the art on site printing, create your unique piece on a range of products including canvas art, metal art, photo murals and memorabilia. Bring in your own photos or have a professional photographer capture your family’s portraits. For more information, visit villagememories.com or call 705-293-3550

Keep Winter Cool Day at Blue Mountain What a difference a year makes! Winter (or lack of) 2012 during March Break saw temperatures reaching a high of 25°C but not this year. Keep Winter Cool Day was just that... sunny but cool. Does this mean we don’t have to be concerned with Global Warming? Far from it and that is precisely the message this yearly event attempts to convey. A wonderful initiative! Awareness and education are the key to ensuring a better future for our planet... oh yes and for ourselves! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt

Business Profile: Beach 1 Electric Ltd

Kids picked up their Easter basket and clues for the Scavenger Hunt at the Sales Office. They then visited several merchants at Stonebridge Town Centre and were The energy in sunlight striking the earth for forty minutes is equivalent to global given treats and had their clue sheet validated, then it was back to the Sales Office energy consumption for a year and to top it all off, solar energy is a virtually unlimited for free hot chocolate, prizes, and more! Story/Photos by: Enrique Miranda source and free. Supplementing your heating requirements by simply using the energy from the sun is what Klaus Willner and his team from Beach 1 Electric take great pride in. Established and founded in 2004, Beach 1 Electrics focus is on Process Automation and complete customer satisfaction. They specialize in providing reliable and professional Solar Energy Solutions including sales and installations for residential, agriculture, commercial, industrial as well as a variety of institutions. “Our goal is that your system lasts much longer than your 20 year contract. When we are designing and installing your system, we keep the long-term picture in mind, for your safety, security and peace of mind,” says Klaus. As a Master Electrician and member of the Ontario Electric League (OEL), Business Network International (BNI) and Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSia), Klaus and his company are established, fully licensed and insured, and provide top-quality electrical contract work. In business now for almost a decade, Beach 1 Electrics reputation in the industrial world has become quite apparent through their top of the line craftsmanship, professional customer relations, long-term customer satisfaction and referrals. As a full service electrical contracting business, turnkey or add-on service is their main focus. Klaus has always had a strong interest in the topic of renewable energy. “When the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) launched the Micro-fit program in 2009, I finally had a way to bring Solar PV into my business. I’ve had a life-long interest in renewable energy,” says Klaus. A bright future with solar energy ensures a limitless supply of energy in Canada. Solar energy alone could provide the energy required for a fully industrialized society. Furthermore, solar energy creates jobs in Ontario and supplies reliable power not affected by international events and natural catastrophes while also improving the overall state of the environment. And the good news: the Ontario Power Authority will pay you 54.9 cents per Kilowatt Hour upon contract approval for 20 years! We cannot wait until non-renewable sources have been depleted before we start to promote alternate energy sources. For a complimentary consultation to create individual solar energy solutions such as heating domestic hot water with the sun or a Solar Hot Air heater or installing panels, call 705.443.8411 or 888.943.8411. Please also feel free to check out their website www.beach1electric. ca or drop in to visit their office at 24 Ronell Crescent, Unit 2, in Collingwood. Abstract Landscapes Siegfried Blum opened an exhibit of his Abstract Landscape paintings at Curiosity House Gallery in Creemore. The beautiful landscapes of Grey and Bruce Counties have been an inspiration for much of Siggi’s work. The rolling hills, farmlands, natural ponds and forests are extremely reminiscent of the landscapes of his childhood summers in Germany. Recently, he has done pieces that incorporate figures into the landscape, some portraits and some commissioned animal portraits. Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography
