Thoughts from my notebook Well, the May issue was certainly a lot easier for me to ‘pull off’ then the April issue. As many of you know, my father passed away in late March, and it has been a very busy and difficult time for my family. Both my brother and I are business owners; traits we inherited from my dad. I miss him everyday, but I know he is looking down on me, working long days and even longer nights and he is proud. Even though he did not live here, my father was always my biggest fan, he would drive the 250kms to pick up the latest issue of Georgian Life to read all about the events that took place. My mom is moving here next month so Collingwood really has become home after 7 years of living here. I am establishing some deep roots and I couldn’t have picked a better community to live in. And, of course I visit and particpate in many awesome community happenings in Wasaga Beach to Meaford as well!

I am exstatic to announce that Georgian Life has been nominated for 3 Collingwood Chamber of Commerce Awards: Small Business of the Year, Business Owner of the Year and Customer Experience Awards. Thank you to everyone who nominated us - it truly is an honour! Georgian Life has an amazing team of people (currently 5 freelance photo journalists, 3 advertising sales representatives, a graphic designer and a writer/editor) all working effortlessly to ensure that every month’s issue is the best yet! We cover about 40 events a month and are dedicated to celebrating the “heart, lifestyle and activities” of those who live, work and play in and around our amazing communities. I am proud that we develop trustworthy relationships with a variety of advertisers, business owners and people who just want to share their upcoming events on our calendar!

Submit your events online: www.georgianlife.ca

I am also very happy to announce the new Georgian Life website! It has been a work in progress for awhile, but with the help of a web design class I took, hosted by Sarah Ritchie, I was able to build a new website which not only looks better but has the functionality that I was craving! Still to come... an online photo gallery and more... Check it out www.georgianlife.ca and let me know what you think!

Celebrating Forty Years of Choral Music!

L. PATTEN & SONS LTD.

The Sound Investment Community Choir started as an idea forty years ago. Ann Sneyd, who had arrived in Collingwood to teach vocal music, decided to organize a Glee Club and the Sound Investment Community Choir was formed.

Quality Custom Homes Since 1958

As a precursor to this year’s Fall Extravaganza the girls held a fun evening at the BMFA and were pleased to announce the launch of a new fundraising campaign initiative. In partnership with the Creemore Coffee Company, Café Feminino - a new gourmet coffee was announced. Proceeds from the sale of this coffee (available at the Creemore Coffee Company Collingwood location and through other outlets) will go to the Frontline Breast Cancer Foundation (FBCF). Way to go ladies! Wishing you continued success with your fundraising and can’t wait to see you in the Fall! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

The choir has taken on different forms over the years, from a ladies only group to its current format of a mixed SATB group with both men and women. Throughout the years, there has been a membership range from nine to 65 people. Currently, the choir has a membership of around 50 drawing from Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, Thornbury, Nottawa, Creemore and beyond. There have been members in their teens to octogenarians. All who love to sing are welcome to audition. Over the years, the repertoire has ranged from Broadway tunes, spirituals, folk songs, to the Messiah, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms. One year, the choir even performed Gilbert and Sullivan’s H. M. S. Pinafore in full costume. The Sound Investment Community Choir was also involved in the Royal Bank Seniors’ Jubilee Concerts held at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto. There has even been musical accompaniment, including local musicians, as well as world re-known Canadian musicians like harpist Erica Good man, percussionist Andy Morris and the Trillium Brass Quintet. Over the span of forty years there has been a real variety of music brought to the community! The Sound Investment Community Choir has been involved in fund raising for the community as well, raising funds for more than 15 charitable groups in the area. Last year, the choir performed a benefit concert to help raise funds for the ‘Raise the Roof’ project for the All Saints’ Anglican Church, where their rehearsals are held. Singing on Canada Day for the Collingwood Canada Day Celebrations continues to be a tradition. This year the choir has held one rehearsal a month at Sunset Manor, bringing some musical joy to the residents. This is a real community choir! If you have not had the pleasure of attending one of the concerts over the past forty years, perhaps it is time you discovered this local treasure. The spring concert – Celebrate the Music - A Potpourri of Music from Mozart to Les Miserables – will be held at Trinity United Church on Friday, May 24 at 7:30 p.m., as well as on Saturday, May 25 at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are available in Collingwood at Crow’s Nest Books, in Thornbury at Paperwhite Flowers, in Creemore at Curiosity House Books and in Wasaga Beach at the IDA Pharmacy. Tickets are also available from choir members. For more information visit www.soundinvestmentchoir.ca. Submitted by Jill Doble

LONGING FOR ADVENTURE Kids LOVE adventures. Who doesn’t really? Outdoor adventures make the greatest memories. In 2010, a poll in the UK reported that 85% of children aged 6-12 were longing for more adventure in their lives. 85% of parents said that adventure should be an important part of their children’s lives… but 50% of children had never taken any part in any adventure sports, and 40% of parents said that they didn’t have time or money to partake in adventure activities with their children. Gasp! No time for adventures? What would Lewis and Clark say to that? Is it because media has exposed us to so much extreme adventure that we feel inadequate just going for a hike? By definition, an adventure is an exciting or unusual experience, which may also be a bold, or risky, where the outcome is uncertain. That means it could simply be a walk with no set destination. Hiking is NOT expensive and neither is riding a bike or exploring uncharted territory beyond the backyard fence! Adventurous activities lead to knowledge, like those undertaken by explorers and pioneers and freckle faced kids in the ravine. This isn’t a suggestion, this is a plea – take your children on a hike this weekend. Open the world to them let them explore. SPRING IS HERE! Gardening Tips Freeze and thaw cycles over the winter may have given some of your plants the heave-ho. Replant any perennials that the frost has heaved out of the ground as soon as you can. Cut back the previous season’s dead plant material. Clean up old perennial foliage from last season (trimmings can go into the compost). Cut back ornamental grasses. Remove winter protection of mounded earth from roses. Prune rose bushes before they start to leaf out. Resist the urge to start digging in your flower beds too early. You can damage the soil’s structure. If you pick up a handful of soil, it should fall apart, not stick together like glue. When it’s dry enough, you can start to dig beds and add compost or manure in preparation for planting. Getting on top of the weeding now means a lot less work later. Weeds start growing vigorously early, so when you spot them, go to it because they are easier to pull out while their roots are still shallow in early spring. Source: Flower Gardening Made

These local businesses can help with your lawn and garden needs The Spring Garden Guide (NC)—Spring is the season of rebirth and re-growth. Which also means green-thumbs can’t wait to get back in those gardens! To get you started, here are some helpful tips from garden guru Peter Cantley, at Loblaw Companies Limited. Make your garden beds. Rid planting areas of weeds and spread a 4-inch layer of compost or manure over soil. Using a pitchfork, mix soil and compost going about 10 inches deep until you’ve got moist crumbly soil. Primp and prune. Remove dead or damaged branches from woody shrubs or trees before new leaf growth begins. Prune spring-flowering shrubs and trees only after the first spring bloom. Take some tests. Different planting areas may have different needs. Check the pH balance of soil in each spot with a home soil test kit. Then as new growth appears you can treat each one with the fertilizer and amendments required.

Peter’s Dos and Don’ts to get you ready for beautiful summer Blooms: • DO water the garden before 10 a.m. If you leave watering for the hotter hours almost half the amount of water you apply will evaporate in the summer heat.

Spring Flowers WEED CONTROL & LAWN SERVICE Weed Control Insect Control Fertilizing Aerating Hydroseeding Overseeding Vegetation Control

CROCUS Crocus is believed by many as the first spring flower. There are about 80 different crocus species and botanically they belong to the iris family.

• DON’T cut back foliage of bulbs until it dries naturally. The bulb needs the green leaves to make food for next season’s growth. Cutting foliage too early results in small, weak bulbs the following year. • DO fertilize roses every week, all summer long. Most hybrids are very heavy feeders and need a lot of fertilizer for beautiful and healthy blooms. Be sure to plant your bushes in a location with plenty of sunlight and leave at least 3 feet in between plants for good air circulation.

TULIP

• DON’T forget to experiment with new perennials every year. Each year, we showcase some of the latest introductions and it’s a wonderful treat to find new plants to enjoy in the garden. For instance, try the PC® Campanula – Purple Get Mee, with purple bell-shaped flowers. This perennial acts like an annual with rich blooms that come back summer to fall.

This bulbous flowering plant takes the 3rd place among the most popular flowers all over the world. The plant comes in an abundance of colors, sizes, forms and height.

33rd Annual BMFA Juried Art Show Awards

Treat mom to a meal she will remember

It seems that each year the quality and number of the entries for the BMFA’s Annual Juried Art Show increases and this year was no exception. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for jurors to arrive at a decision for awarding but nonetheless it is quite the honour for all whose works are selected for ‘hanging’ in the gallery during the run of the show. Although they are a vacation membership resort, many of their amenities are open to everyone: the bar, the banquet facilities and The Manor Restaurant, where three highly-trained professional chefs invent wondrous repasts: Baked Prime Rib Pie, Braised Lamb Shank, Roasted Vegetable Stack and Chicken Supreme come to mind. They also serve up amazing Gourmet Burgers, English Fish and Chips (just for the halibut) and some seriously creative pastas. Gut Feelings Optimal digestive health is essential for emotional wellbeing. In many cases, anxiety and depression can be linked to impaired digestive health. Conventional care often fails to address digestive health in the treatment of these conditions, instead relying on drugs to manage symptoms without removing the underlying cause. If you suffer from anxiety or depression and don’t enjoy excellent digestive health, ask yourself these two questions: 1. What are you eating? A diet high in refined grains, meat and dairy products coupled with a lack of water and fiber can cause constipation. On the other hand, indulging in greasy, fried foods, poor quality chocolate and sugary treats can trigger diarrhea. Not only do these bowel issues make it difficult to obtain optimal nutrition to support brain function, but constant digestive upset can independently make you feel bummed out. Food sensitivities must also be ruled out. Unlike classic food allergies, which cause immediate and often severe hives and breathing difficulties, food sensitivities cause milder and delayed immune-mediated symptoms. These reactions often involve gastrointestinal upset and may manifest as joint and muscle pain, skin conditions, autoimmune conditions and mental health issues. 2. What’s eating you? Stress is thought to be a major trigger for irritable bowel syndrome, a condition that affects about 1 in 5 people and is associated with anxiety and depression. It’s no wonder that these conditions are linked, since 95% of the body’s serotonin is found in the gastrointestinal tract. Additionally, 90% of the fibers in the primary nerve of the digestive tract, the vagus nerve, carry information to the brain from the gut - not the other way around. In fact, the nervous tissue associated with the gastrointestinal tract is called the ‘second brain’. This gives us all the more reason to explore the mind-body connection in medicine and trust our gut feelings in everyday life. A Service Adventure of a Lifetime! HHART is the acronym that identifies a series of Haitian Humanitarian Assistance and Relief Trips inspired, funded and led by Rotarians from Rotary District 7010 (central Canada). The primary mission of HHART teams is to provide much needed medical, dental and other forms of humanitarian assistance to a segment of approximately 12,000 impoverished, disadvantaged persons of Haitian descent that live in the Dominican Republic near Puerto Plata. This trip was the fourth in their continuing efforts to help. On each trip they take more than 80 hockey bags of medical supplies, clothes, boots, shoes, hygiene packs as well, socially interacting with the population and respecting their customs and norms.

The medical and dental teams provide the Haitians with basic medical and dental services. The teams bring equipment, supplies and medicines with them as none are available in the Haitian settlements. “Physician Travel Packs” and “Dental Travel Packs” that contain supplies and medicine will be purchased with monies received through fundraising events and direct cash donations for HHART. The construction teams hire and help the local people complete new concrete block homes for needy families. The construction team will also complete numerous small construction projects in various settlements. The distribution team will deliver goats and laying hens, sleeping mattresses, hygiene packs, protein powder food supplements, clothing and footwear. Sports balls, skipping ropes, colouring books and crayons will be given to the children. These distribution items will be acquired through cash and donation-in-kind campaigns.

“Don’t knock the weather: nine-tenths of the people couldn’t start a conversation if it didn’t change once in a while.” - Kin Hubbard

Business Profile: Rachel May - Ducks in a Row If disorganization is interfering with your life or business and you’re feeling overwhelmed and frustrated, it’s time to get your “Ducks in a Row” and get organized.

solutions for their homes. She has experience working with people of all ages to establish organized, functional and healthy spaces. Clearing the way for enjoyable easy living is possible with Ducks in a Row. Once the organizing and purging is done, it feels like fresh air for the brain. Through Rachel’s company, she is able to offer a full range of services with the resources to get the job done. She is a member of the Professional Organizers of Canada having obtained a Certificate in Professional Organizing from QC Design School in Ottawa in 2012.

To achieve success with your business or home-life, you will need to take the necessary steps by clarifying your priorities and deciding how you want your lifestyle, belongings and business arranged. Organization takes time, but when you get into the habit of it, life becomes so much easier! It just so happens that Rachel May, the business owner of Ducks in a Row, loves to declutter. Rachel loves helping others in need and is the one friends call when they move or need assistance finding organizing

Rachel thinks of moving as a brand new beginning. It’s an opportunity to reassess possessions, discover hidden and forgotten treasures; and more importantly - a time to get rid of excess before the move. People often feel overwhelmed and unnerved when their living environment is filled with clutter. Reorganizing your home helps create new found space and order and perhaps avoid a needless move. Rachel has moved nearly twenty times in her adult life and this has taught her how to visualize new space. A professional organizer can recommend products or

systems which will make your new home comfortable and functional – especially for those who are facing challenges such as downsizing while also trying to maintain their independence. Every assignment is unique and begins with an initial consultation requiring a custom approach, based on the circumstances involved. With an agreed strategy of services needed, an appropriate system is then implemented and no additional costs beyond the original estimate are incurred without the approval of the client. Professional organizing can vary from an initial consultation to complete “hands on” support. The fee for service depends upon the task at hand. The true goal of a professional organizer is to provide a safe living environment and help the individual maintain a clutter free and functional home and also help to improve business settings and office space. “I am fascinated with gadgets and systems that make people’s lives easier, but above all, I love a challenge and seeing it through to the end! Being an Organizing Professional enables me to combine my passion and skills in a way that brings order to an otherwise

busy and often chaotic way of living,” says Rachel. So, you’ve finally decided it`s time to get your Ducks in a Row! Ducks in a Row offers a wide variety of professional services to suit your organizing needs such as the following: • In home consultation • Decluttering • Downsizing • Home Sale Preparation • Complete Moving Solutions • Setting Up New Residence Rachel also specializes in the challenging task of digitizing your photo albums.

Contact Rachel to discuss additional scopes of work at 705.445.0050 or feel free to visit her website: http://www.ducksinarow.me/

I’ll be happy when… ow do you answer this? Time goes way too fast. As I watch my Mom struggle with the challenges that many of us get in our golden years, I am reminded that there may never be a better time. Do it now.

Happiness is a choice. Look for the moments. When we are in the now happiness is easier to see. Young children know this. There is a young child in all of us just itching to play. One of my favourite books is “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron. She encourages us to go back and do the things we so enjoyed with reckless abandonment when we were kids. What did you love to do? Was it building forts, playing house, colouring, street hockey, dressing dolls, Lego, or singing? I encourage you to add some of this back into your life. Are you worried about appearing foolish? Do you really care? Which do you prefer boring and stuffy or foolish and spontaneous? The choice is yours.

Up to 99% OFF First Month

I don’t think I have ever met a young child that I would consider boring or stuffy. It is a very adult trait. We try so hard to grow up and be good adults. Yes, we want to be responsible and loving adults; yet, the spice of life is happiness. Being childlike is something that many of us will know once again in our elder years. When all else is forgotten we will still have that spark of childlike wonder. Ice cream, puppies and an opportunity to play will still make us smile.

Successful Shoreline Clean Up The staff at Abbott Foot & Ankle Clinic, together with patients and community partners met to pick up the garbage at Harbourview Park and its shoreline in conjuction with the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean Up. In a very short time, they collected 155 lbs. of trash and recycling! Needless to say, they found some interesting articles, mentionables and unmentionables. Everything from fast food litter to clothing, tube lights, deodorant cans, and insulation. We even found an old LP, if you can remember what those are! A great time was had with all of the participants that came out and at times, even braved “blizzard” like weather conditions. Abbott Foot & Ankle Clinic hopes to make this an annual event. Linkes Local Arts – Frieda Linke: Contemporary Realist Frieda Linke’s two tier business and art gallery on the main street in Stayner displays the works of 17 local artists as well as her own. Her venture began with her daughter, Arrin Wager, four years ago from their home studios in Stayner. Frieda also displayed her work at the Venders Market for almost two years before she decided to branch out and expand. Frieda celebrated the Grand Opening of her business, Linkes Local Arts, in Stayner, on March 26, 2011. The store features a varied and well-rounded selection of artistic pieces from paintings, woodwork, glassware, and jewelry and fabric artwork from the works of traditional and nontraditional artist. “You can be a beginner or you can be a professional. It’s all the same here,” says Frieda. The gallery is part of Stayner’s welcoming downtown business core with displays of work from artists and artisans from this region. In every corner of this unique gallery you will find artistic creations. Frieda embraces the growth of the art movement in and around the area and clearly has a passion for art and the community and she has always had a strong interest in the artistic world. “This is not a job to me, it’s a passion,” explains Freida. Last year, Frieda founded Art in the Park which is sponsored by Stayner’s Chamber of Commerce and she is also a Chamber member. The next event is set for July 20th so be sure to check it out! Influenced by the works of artists such as The Group of Seven, Robert Bateman and Frida Kirta, Frieda tries to put a part of her in each piece that she creates – hopes, fears, happiness and sadness. “All that makes artists who they are translates into the artwork we create,” she explains.

Exams, Excellence & Eyewear

The encouragement Frieda has received from her family members has given her inspiration especially from her mother, Helen, who always believed in her talent even when she doubted herself.

Book your appointment online or call us today!

“Mom never got to see how far I’ve come, but I feel her spirit and sometimes I hear a soft whisper, ‘good going kid’,” says Frieda.

Frieda describes her artwork as ‘Contemporary Realism’ and works with acrylic and oil paints, pastel, charcoal and pencil. She sells her work mostly out of the studio; however, you will also find her work throughout online galleries and on her website http://linkeslocalarts.com/. Fill your home with one of kind artistic creations or buy something for that special someone who will cherish it for years to come. Stop in at Linkes Local Arts for all of your art supply needs and if you can’t find what you want, Frieda will be more than happy to order what you need. Collingwood’s Karate Kids Winning in any sporting competition is quite an accomplishment but what do you say about a small local club that returns from a major tournament with 33 medals and trophies. Outstanding ... and that is precisely what happened when the Georgian Triangle Karate Club (whose home dojo is Connaught Public School) competed in the Canadian Karate Championships held in Toronto on March 30, 2013. Congratulations to all those who participated and continued success to all of Collingwood’s Karate Kids! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

STAY | PLAY | EAT | SHOP WASAGA BEACH Judy Garland Story – A Theatre Collingwood Gala The wonderfully talented Judy Garland died in 1969 but for those who attended the one-night only performance by the incredibly gifted Debbie Collins at the Gayety Theatre it would certainly give one pause. A very impressive stage and musical presentation highlighting the life of the legendary Judy had the packed house mesmerized. Theatre Collingwood could not have made a better choice as a launch event for their upcoming 2013 series than what we enjoyed and experienced that evening. Kudos to all for providing us with such a marvellous and memorable evening. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Attitude is everything... I was going to write an article this month about attitude and transitions brought on by circumstances, often out of our control. I came across this article and decided I couldn’t have written anything better. Enjoy! A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, with his hair fashionably coifed and shaved perfectly, even though he is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready. As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on his window. “I love it,” he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.

“Mr. Jones, you haven’t seen the room; just wait.” “That doesn’t have anything to do with it,” he replied. “Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not, doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged ... it’s how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away. Just for this time in my life. Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you’ve put in. So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories! Thank you for your part in filling my memory bank. I am still depositing.” Remember the five simple rules to be happy: 1. Free your heart from hatred. 2. Free your mind from worries. 3. Live simply 4. Give more. 5. Expect less
