LIVE SANCTUARY COVE.
Celebrate the Sanctuary Cove Festival, 6-20 June Featuring James Morrison Fashion, Art, Entertainment, Food & Wine
The festival kicks off on Saturday June 5 with ‘Champers and Pampers’ at Hyatt Regency Sanctuary Cove. Indulge in French champagne and nibbles while being pampered with shoulder and hand massages, express makeovers and manicures. Enjoy a special live performance by James Morrison, one of the country’s leading jazz musicians during the mini food and wine festival on Saturday June 12. Combined with a sumptuous lunch, it’s sure to be an afternoon to remember. Bring your little ones into the village to learn the hottest new moves at the Hip Hop Dance Party. The party will culminate in a dance off with great prizes, judged by celebrity guests including model Chloe Maxwell. Your budding stars will also have the chance to be chosen as the new face of designer kidswear label JettRoc. Fully supervised, you can stay and watch the kids play or
stroll around The Marine Village and enjoy a quiet coffee or late brekky. For a fashion fix explore your creative flair by participating in one of several free fashion and beauty workshops. Keep up to date with the latest international fashion trends in our Fashion Group Exposed evening. Or enjoy our Stylist Competition where six emerging stylists will compete to put the best ‘looks’ together to be judged by a panel of industry experts and presented afterwards in a fashion parade. To celebrate the finale of the fashion fiesta, have lunch with the girls at a variety of the village restaurants on Friday June 11. While you dine on a delicious set menu and free glass of bubbles, enjoy our roaming fashion parade featuring the latest looks straight off the catwalk. To compliment the fashion and food, an Art Festival will run over the weekend of 18-20 June. The village will be framed by market stalls and an exhibition will feature working artists creating and selling their work. There will be four galleries at the festival featuring more than 350 artworks. Children can get their faces painted with actual artwork and will help create a massive mural canvas. With such a wide range of exciting events at the Sanctuary Cove Festival… it should not be missed!

occer’s a nice game. Not like some of those others, where you have to jump high and run up people’s backs to get to the ball. Most of the action is also played out at ground level, so you’ve got a lot more chance of seeing what’s going on, Then, when someone scores a goal, everyone runs in together for a big, friendly group hug. Nice, I say. With that in mind, it’s not surprising that excitement is on the rise for the One World, One Game that’s leading the way to the One Cup. The World Cup is football’s version of the Olympics, and just in case you didn’t know, it’s all happening in South Africa later this month. And is it ever going to be huge – no more so than at this end of town. The local community has a large contingent of South Africans, who will be watching to check out familiar landscapes. We also have our very own Socceroo in our midst – veteran defender, Craig Moore, who lives in the area with his wife and children. Of course, the Cup won’t just be all about soccer, either. No event worth its bigness these days is without an entertainment spectacular, of ridiculous proportions. The line-up for the Cup has all bases covered. It’s got country bands, blues bands, Christian bands, rock bands. Bands playing their best from the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. Acoustic music, electric, woodwind and bagpipes. Clowns, facepainters, comedians and magicians, a Marilyn Monroe lookalike, and a rumour that Elvis will definitely be in the building. The stars are also queuing with the likes of Alicia, Angelique Kidjo, the Black
Eyed Peas, and, Shakira performing alongside top names in a line-up of Africa’s traditional musicians. A few short years ago, soccer was seen as a bit of a background sport in Australia. An imported game, brought here by families from places like Greece, Italy, the former Yugoslavia, and Great Britain. They handed their sporting passions onto their sons, some of those who would have undoubtedly been on the field four years ago when Australia was back in action at the World Cup in Germany, after an absence of 32 years. It was a moment in sporting history and following the showing, interest in soccer – or football as true followers will tell you – shot up. Now, everyone knows the name and the game. So, here’s the bet. When Australia meets Germany for the first game of the first round, in Durban, sometime in the early Australian hours on June 13, there’s likely to be a big slice of locals watching, along with a guesstimated 751.1 million people worldwide and an expected 10 millionplus, nationwide. That is of course unless it clashes with evil Russell and his wicked plans to cheat, lie and scheme his way to the winning post on Survivor. Then it might be over to the replay. – Sharon Kells For more magazine highlights visit

e told you it would be a Great Long Lunch – and so it was. The red carpet was out, the cameras were rolling and our much-awaited event kicked off with a glass of champagne, an impressive amount of fashion style and a whole lot of excitement. More than 150 guests turned up to join the Get It team for lunch last month, and what a line-up it was. Representatives of Salacia Waters and Skin Alert, who sponsored the event and helped make it happen, need to be thanked big time for their support – although,we’re a little curious to know how Salacia’s director Benjamin Shin and marketing manager Ken Lim found the very lively mix of women, fashion and food. As for Skin Alert, who better than to sing the praises of its youth-preserving technology than Oscar award winning make-up artist Peter Frampton – and sing he did, attributing his dashing good looks to their treatments. That’s a pitch for you. Stacey Critchell, from Salacia Waters, also updated guests on the progress of the impressive complex taking shape at Paradise Point – an undertaking that represents a major invest-
ment in the northern Gold Coast. Featured guest speaker, Zoe Foster, flew in for the day, fresh from the glamour and glitz of Sydney’s Fashion Week. Zoe, a journalist and author, gave some telling insights into how she managed to write her best-selling books, juggle a day job and fit in the rest of her life along the way – easy when you know how. And then there was the heartfelt address from Kylie Terry, a serving RAAF member and ambassador for National Breast Cancer, whose story about surviving breast cancer touched everyone in the room. After lunch, inhibitions flowed free and the dancing began, with Nadia Lloyd, taking out the best moves competition, backed all the way by a lively crowd. Former Miss Australia, Georgina Denahy, had fashion under wraps with a parade that gave us a view of what designers George Gross & Harry Who, Anthea Crawford, Marcs, Saba and Perri Cutten have in mind for winter. All up, it was an interesting, entertaining and fun day – and if you missed it this time round, make sure you get in early for the next Great Long Lunch. You’re all invited.v

aving started the business 36 years ago in Adelaide, designers George Gross and Harry Watt continue to clock up the wins as one of Australia's leading fashion partnerships. Their respective labels, George Gross and Harry Who, have taken out more than 13 Australian fashion design awards, and their innovative style remains a favourite in the fashion centres of Australia, the USA, Canada and Europe.
Words with George Gross, one half of the dynamic duo behind the George Gross and Harry Who label. What was the most notable moment in your design career? Being on stage of the Opera House with Gianni Versace, Donna Karan, Oscar de la Renta, the Missonis, and four other international designers for the Bicentennial Wool Show. And best of all, our clothes stood up to theirs with strength. What were the influences that inspired your current winter collection? Our clients. I like them to look modern, sleek and luxurious. What three things can you not live without? Harry, my sister Kathy and beautiful surroundings. What are your guilty pleasures? None. If something is pleasurable, why feel guilty? if you could dress anyone dead or alive whom would it be and why? Dead: Nefertiti – I love opulence and glamour and she must be the all time it girl of glamour. Alive: Cate Blanchett. The most sensuously elegant, beautiful actress working today.

Queenstown When the snow falls on
THERE’S A LOT TO LOVE ABOUT NEW ZEALAND, BUT IT’S THE PURE UNADULTERATED BEAUTY OF IT’S LANDSCAPE THAT WINS VERY TIME.
T
HERE’S something about New Zealand that seems to be missing. You’ll notice it on the road much travelled. The one which takes you from the suburban city limits of Christchurch and out onto the Canterbury Plains, heading towards Queenstown. It’s the tried and tested route for the hundreds of visitors, who come to play in the country’s South Island through winter and summer. When it’s warm, it’s the clean waterways, the trekking and hiking through the mountains and valleys, the walks through the green landscaped trails or the high profile adventures, like kayaking, waterskiing and jumping from on high, that draw the crowds. But in winter, people fly in from all corners of the world, and the Australian mainland, especially from the Gold Coast, with one thing on their mind – to hit the slopes and enjoy the ski season in the popular runs around Queenstown. The trip from Christchurch stretches across an expanse of grassy flatlands, where the only distraction for kilometres on end are the quaint cottages and farmhouses set back from the highway along the route, with their smoking chimneys and family histories. There’s the tourist highlights, like the stone church on the edge of Lake Tekapo, where the waters turned azure blue with the help of the glacial melt, while in the distance, the white snow caps of NZ’s Mount Cook take the view. Sometimes, you’ll also come across the odd petrol station, a restaurant and pub or two offering a meal break, and the occasional tourist outlet selling woolly items of interest. For the most part, the scenery will stay the same until you hit the steeper wind of the mountain run into Queenstown itself. But it’s what you won’t see along the way, that is far more telling. No sporting billboards urging you to just ‘do it’. No spruiking advertisements seducing you to drink a certain beer, invest in a certain skin cream, or put your money in the bank you can count on. No ‘death by advertising’ along the way. Continued page 18.

Somehow, NZ has bypassed commercial saturation of its public space and managed to keep the better part of its natural wall free from the wall to wall sell so inherent everywhere else. Had the popular Coronet Peak ski resort found itself on the Gold Coast, it’s a good bet it would have been sharing the view with a 125-storey highrise on the most pristine of its peaks – and a flashing sign praising it as the tallest residential on a snowfield. The NZ authorities have been very clever in their decision to protect and preserve what is undoubtedly the country’s best asset – its unspoilt, untouched and unpolluted landscape, as well as the fauna and flora. And they have reaped the rewards, attracting a wave of new eco-investment and tourism, and luring international filmmakers, with the promise of stunning visual backdrops and an environment unimpeded by man made distractions. Peter Jackson alerted the world to the breathtaking beauty of this part of the world through his Lord of the Rings series. But even this home grown hero had to follow the rules. When Jackson was filming many of the battle scenes in the picturesque village of Glenorchy, just outside of Queenstown, he was required to remove every plant and pebble before one frame could be shot. The story goes that a team of horticultural and wildlife experts were brought in to map the location of every plant, supervise each removal and storage, then later, when the fighting scenes were done and dusted, return each to its original spot. This sense of preservation and need to keep the wildlife intact and protected is widespread in New Zealand. Even the bustling resort of Queenstown, rated as one of the world’s top tourist destinations, shows similar restraint. While catering to more a million visitors a year, undoubtedly adding to the pressure on infrastructure and accommodation needs, the resort has retained its quaint charm – and avoided the quick fix of high rises and theme parks. It remains a delightfully cosmopolitan town, fronted by Lake Wakatipu, with the majority of the buildings – private homes, public facilities, lodges and accommodation houses – constructed in terraced layers, designed to blend subtlety into the surrounding mountains and landscape. Even the town’s commercial hub of shops, where the restaurants rank the best in the world and the stores carry top designer labels, is fashioned around a weave of pedestrian malls, wide timber walkways and cobbled stone laneways. It’s a town known for it’s old world charm and penchant for English style pubs, and pulls in the visitors all year round. In summer, the hikers, or ‘trampers’ as the Kiwis call them, arrive to take on the area’s wilderness. They walk through mossy forests and green grassy paddocks, over the craggy moorlike fields, through rocky passageways and under cascading waterfalls.
One of the more popular trails on the walking route, known as Motatapu, passes through land held by American country singer, Shania Twain. She was required to make it accessible to ‘trampers’ as part of the lease deal under NZ’s conservation laws. If walking doesn’t do it for you, there are quite literally, a hundred and one other ways to amuse yourself in Queenstown – they don’t call it the adventure capital of the world for no good reason. You could kick off with a 134-metre bungy jump over the Nevis River, the highest leap in the area. Or take off with a splash of white water rafting on the Kawarau or Shotover Rivers, followed by,
a quick zip up the same river in a super fast jet boat. Or you could be in the mood for a twosome and take a tandem skyjump, a paraglide, or a swing in a suspended seat high above the city. If you’re after a quieter life, there’s golf at Kelvin Grove, one of most picturesque courses you’re every likely to play, or an elegant clipper sailing boat heading to explore the magnificence of nearby Milford Sound. The decisions only come spoilt for choice. When you start talking winter, the only game in town is skiing – although, you have to include snowboarding in the mix, as it has all but taken over the slopes.
Queenstown’s three best known fields – Coronet Peak, the closest to the resort, Cardona and the amazing Remarkables – offer skiers their own particular advantages. And because of the popularity of NZ snowfields to Australians, it’s often possible to tie up the trip and all its incidentals before you leave home. There’s a whole lot more of New Zealand to see besides Queenstown – a complete other island to start with. But it’s a great launching point and one of the best introductions to a natural NZ that will quite literally take your breath away.v Sharon Kells For travel arrangements contact Harvey World Travel, Hope Island, 5530 8633.

sofra
ou don’t really expect your spaghetti to come chocolate flavoured, with a serve of wild berries on the side and berry coulis to whet the appetite. A long way from the days of bolognaise or marinara. But the pasta dish, handmade with cocoa and obviously on the dessert menu, is set to become a dining favourite at the newly named Sofra restaurant, in Hope Island Central. It’s a signature offering from chef Sam Kavas, who is in the kitchen, cooking up a fresh new menu to go with the restaurant’s new emergence. Sofra is the reincarnation of the popular Buon Appetito, owned by Fernando and Lenore Moleirinho, which has established itself with a reputation of good service and good food. “Buon Appetito has been a great restaurant, there’s no doubt, ‘’ says Sam. “But with Sofra we are carrying on that standard and going one step further. “We are updating the profile, introducing some new, fresh and exiting tastes, and adding some
delightgful Turkish dishes to the menu.’’ Sam, who trained at the respected Boulevarde Hotel, in Sydney, worked in restaurants in Sydney and Melbourne before coming to the Gold Coast. Since arriving, he’s been an early morning regular down at the waterfront , taking the catch fresh from the trawlers as they come in from a night’s fishing. “That’s one thing we can promise with Sofra,’’ says Sam. “Everything – absolutely everything – comes fresh from the kitchen, made from
local sourced produce wherever possible, especially our seafood. “You’ll taste that freshness in every dish.” Sofra’s new menu will have some interesting options. The popular run of pizzas with their crisp thin crust and multi choice of toppings stay put, and the pasta selections, including gnocchi, are all home made and fresh. But if you want some variation, there’s Sam’s lentil soup, which looks the simplest of dishes, but is superbly smooth and satisfying, or his fetta and spinach slice, again a straightforward dish, but one that surprises and delights with its delicate crisp taste. The food is great. Sam has his reputation and passion on the line and neither are up for compromise. “The tastes of Turkey blend well with the Mediterranean dishes,’’ says Sam, whose Turkish-born mother, introduced him to the exotic and piquant flavours of the Middle East. Sofra will open seven days a week, with a take-away and home delivery service, on hand six days a week. “For me food is adventure,’’ says Sam. “And we’d like our customers to take that adventure with us – they won’t be disappointed.”v

The next day, back in the classroom, Lynn, the teacher, innovator “These were children who certainly had their difficulties,’’ says Lynn. and risk taker, was delivered her reward. “They’d been constantly told, in one way or another, that they “One of the little girls, who had big problems with her reading, couldn’t learn, wouldn’t be able to read or write properly, so they came up to me with a book in hand and said, if I can ski, then I never did. can read – and she did.” “They’d been given to understand that they were not capable, That story was a lifetime ago, and Lynn says the shame and sometimes even called stupid by others.” of today is that liability threats and over protectiveness But Lynn took a lead from her own father. would likely stop such a program even being considered. “I grew up with a man who was not only a good person, but a “I saw first hand the good it created, the promise it
offered, and was so proud to be part of that exercise.” Today, Lynn lives and works in Hope Island, a long way from her American roots in Michigan. She’s married to an Australian, runs her own business and is loving this new country she’s adopted. Her first trip to Australia and Queensland came on somewhat of a whim. She was working as a teacher in Michigan and bringing up two young daughters on her own, after a divorce. But every summer break, she took part in a program catering for foreign students, and would come home full of stories to tell daughters Betsy and Molly, about the different people and places she met. “I’d be so enthusiastic that we’d make plans for us all to pack up and travel to some of these places – but we never did,’’ says Lynn. However, after one such retelling, the girls, fed up with promises, took her to task, and the next thing the trio were on a plane to Australia and the Gold Coast, where Lynn had scored a temporary teaching job. She took a year’s sabbatical from her American work, and while she thrived on the change, was concerned for her daughters. “I wasn’t sure the girls would take to being so far away, but they fell in love with Australia – so much so that when I had to go home a year later, they stayed on.” That sealed the deal. Lynn packed up, made the Australian move permanent and in a turn of events that came ‘out of the blue’, met her future husband. “Now I’m learning how to be an Aussie for real,’’ she says. With the new move and new life came a new career – one which proved a complete turnaround from her previous work. She became involved in marketing a range of Swiss skin care products, which she admits was as ‘far away from an interest as I could have had at the time’. ‘That also came about a bit by chance,’’ says Lynn. After spending a lifetime in Michigan’s cold climate, as soon as she hit Australia’s sunny shores, she soaked it up. But while Lynn thought her tan ‘most beautiful’, her friends were mortified when she arrived back home. “They weren’t too complimentary at all about my skin or how I looked,’’ she says. “They told me I was aging by the minute, gave me some new skin products to try, and I went along, mostly to appease them. “What I didn’t expect was the change in my skin. It literally underwent a transformation and I couldn’t remember when it had looked that good.” The experience sent her seeking more information and a decision to become involved in the business of beauty and skin care, well aware of the inherent prejudices in the networking model that came with it. “Not only was I aware of it, I was a little sceptical myself,’’ says Lynn. “But the product was so overwhelmingly good, that it was never really an issue. “The way I see it, women are very cluey when it comes to knowing what they want, and especially so when it comes to their skin care. “You can be sure they will make choices on quality, effectiveness and results – just as I would, so on that front, I had no doubts about this business.” Lynn regularly travels back to America to visit friends, family and her daughters, who have since relocated there to follow up their own careers. But she says the whim that came with a summer job, was one of the best decisions of her life, and for now she’s working on her ‘Aussie’ accent.v

The 7 best-kept health secrets you must know, but were never told. B
eing different is never easy. It can be tough. Real tough. I used to just ‘go with the flow’ and not ‘rock the boat”, but sometimes one’s heart beats to a different drum. You’ll see what I mean shortly… Let me introduce Ben Levi myself. My name is Ben Levi. I’m a third generation Gold Coaster born into a family of two generations of Medical Practitioners. So, I’ve been around the medical model all my life. But this is where I’ve made a change. I decided to help people get well without uing drugs or surgery. So, I became a chiropractor. I’ve heard people say, “oh, so you’re a back cracker”, or “bone cruncher”. This is exactly why I feel compelled to expose some secrets and dispel some myths! The 7 secrets I’m sharing with you today will change the way you look at your own and your family’s health forever.
1
Our Symptoms are a poor indicator of our health…how we feel and how well we heal are different. Our degree of symptom is not a health barometer. We can be symptom free and have cancer, heart disease or even just tooth decay. High cholesterol isn’t caused by a shortage of statin production. Pain isn’t a result of ibuprofen insufficiency. These symptoms are merely our clever bodies trying to give us a warning signal. If you hear a rattle in your car do you turn the music up to get rid of it? Or do you get a qualified mechanic to fix the problem?
2
We need a healthy spine to have a healthy body…your spine and nerves are like a switchboard for your body. If we have some of those spinal ‘switches’ in an ‘off’ position, similar to a blown fuse, our body won’t work properly, like the lights get switched off when a fuse blows to your house. We need to live with all the switches in an ‘on’ position to be healing properly and therefore be healthy for life.
3
Healing happens from the inside out …our bodies have a natural ability to heal! It’s abundant and free! Everyone has the power needed to live to 120. It’s called innate intelligence, and it’s that power to heal we are all blessed with. You can’t buy it or swallow it. You just need to let it work without interference. This is where subluxations come into it. They interfere with normal healing by blocking the flow of electrical impulses from our brain to our body. Remove the subluxations, and miracles happen. So what is a subluxation?
4
Subluxations may be devastating… A Subluxation is any misalignment of the spinal bones which chokes the spinal cord and spinal nerves. As you know, your brain and nervous system is the master controlling system of your body. It has ultimate control of over 50 trillion cells that make you breathe, smile, digest, swallow and even control your blood pressure! When the spine misaligns its called subluxation and this can put massive pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. Imagine that! And what’s worse, is that usually we can’t even feel it. Less than 10% of the nervous system carries or perceives pain. That means things we do every day, such as sit at a computer or playing sport, can cause misalignment, and put pressure on the nerves, weakening our nervous system. Sometimes we are lucky and we get some body signals such as headaches, fatigue, and back pain, telling us there is something wrong.
5
Chiropractors specialize in the detection and removal of subluxation We study the intricate workings of the spine and nervous system extensively so we can carefully remove this potentially damaging condition. It takes 5 years full time at University to learn how to find and remove subluxations from the spine. I graduated with a Masters degree in Chiropractic and studied a further two years to hold a Degree in Nutritional Medicine.
neck? Do you have a sway back? Is one shoulder higher than the other or one leg slightly shorter? Bad posture not only looks bad, it is bad. It’s as bad on the inside as it is on the outside and should not be ignored.
7
Chiropractic adjustments are safe, gentle and effective…an adjustment is a very specific and gentle way of realigning the spine. I know many of us have experienced practitioners who are too heavy handed. I agree, I’m fussy about who adjusts me, too. We use very gentle, yet extremely effective methods of adjusting the spine. We make it our responsibility to get the best possible results, in the safest possible way.
Try something different. For the next 2 weeks we’ll give a thorough spine and posture check for just $30, normally valued at $220. We have our x-ray facility on site, if required. Just mention this article. Come and say hi to Kerrie, our naturopath and massage therapist. Whatever your needs, we’ll endeavour to look after you. We are located at Suite 9, 1 Rialto Quay Drive, Hope Island, next to BiLo, above the Thai restaurant, on the turn off to Sanctuary Cove. Call Di, my friendly assistant at Chiropractic Central, on (07) 5530 8494, mention this offer and we will schedule you in as soon as we can. We look forward to meeting you very soon! Remember, your health is your wealth

Your posture is the window to your spine…if your posture is out, your spine and nervous system is under pressure. That’s right, you may have subluxation. How do you stand? Does your head sit forward of your shoulders? Are you getting a bump at the base of your

here is absolutely no reason for anyone to put up with the social disability of hearing loss. The newest digital hearing aids have hi-fidelity sound, are comfortable and virtually invisible. Many hearing impaired people have decided against using hearing aids because of concern about their appearance, says Alastair Bacon of Audio Active Hearing Aids “Appearance has always been a major factor in the decision making process,’’ he says. “However, today’s smallest hearing aids fit entirely within the ear canal and typically can’t be seen unless someone is looking directly into the ear. “In most cases no one would ever know a hearing aid was being worn, and they are so comfortable, that after a few days, people don’t even know they are wearing them.” He says performance is also a major benefit. “Most of our clients who’ve used traditional hearing aids can’t believe the difference in the sound quality of a high-end digital instrument,’’ he says. “The tiny deep canal aids sit so close to the ear drum, they don’t need to amplify as much. It’s like someone talking right beside, you as opposed to
talking from the other side of the room. The sound is clearer and less distorted.’’ Most of the newest aids are automatic, and can even reduce annoying background noise. You simply insert then forget about it. “It’s truly amazing what such a tiny device can do,’’ says Alastair Audio Active’s audiologists are qualified professionals specialising in and in fitting deep canal hearing aids. The company is offering a free initial consultation to clients, and a no-obligation 30-day, 100 per cent money back guarantee on all fittings. verywhere you look in Lindfield Gardens there’s a tree, a flower or a shrub in view. If it’s not in the garden itself, it’s in the names of the apartment blocks, the walkways or the streets. “The environment here is one of the main attractions,’’ says the centre’s consultant Sue Benseman. “The gardens are really beautiful, so it’s a nice touch to also have apartment buildings, names like Elm and Maple.’’ The complex is a retirement village for the over 55s and according to Sue, is in the perfect location. “It’s within easy reach of everything. You can walk to Helensvale Plaza, take the underpass to Westfield Shopping centre, and the rail link to Robina on the Gold Coast or up to Brisbane is on your doorstep,’’ says Sue.” Services such the as medical centre and the Gold Coast City library are also conveniently located. Lindfield Gardens is a fully accredited retirement village, offering independent living in a choice of free-standing homes, apartment blocks, duplexes and also quad blocks, with access from both ground and street level. Sue says the apartments, built 18 months to two years ago, offer basement parking with stair or lift access and feature modern interior design. “The great thing about living here is that people are supportive and friendly without being intrusive,’’ says Sue. “The complex has a common lounge area, a swimming pool heated all year round, an intimate library, huge auditorium catering for 250, which is also used for indoor bowls, art classes and various functions held here.” She says people live in their own environment, but each residence has a 24-hour alarm system should it be needed. Don’t make excuses. Make an appointment. We’re all busy, and we all find excuses to put off having a breastscreen. But once you turn 50, the risk of developing breast cancer increases dramatically. And no excuse is worth that. Fact: A breastscreen is the best way to detect breast cancer early – well before you or your doctor can feel anything. • It’s one-on-one with a female health professional. • It only takes 30 minutes every two years. • You don’t need a referral. • It’s free. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Phone 13 20 50. Early detection could save your life. Permanently located at Helensvale, Southport and West Burleigh. eing able to stay in your own home as you get older is about a lot of things. It’s about keeping the familiarity you’ve known all your life close at hand, of having the security of your surroundings, and the comfort and knowing of your memories and experiences. “But there might come a stage where people need a little help in their home to cope,’’ says Mary-Louise North, from the Oz Care organisation. “And that could cover a broad range of both in-home and nursing care.” She says by providing support through in-house nursing care, helping people with housework, shopping, showering, transport and meal preparation, the Oz Care service allows them to stay independent. “Sometimes, it’s as simple as helping people manage medications, or dress wounds and attend to other health issues. But other times it can be help of general nature, that works to make things run smoother.” She says if health or well-being needs require more intensive care, the organisation offers three very bright and modern facilities to meet these needs - with warmth and welcome in mind. “Our Oz Care centres – Parkwood Gardens, Keith Turnbull Place, Labrador and Ozanam Villa at Burleigh Heads – are smart, modern and have a home-like appeal in their design and layout.” “Oz Care has been on the scene for a number of years, and worked hard to establish a reputation for an excellent standard of care that the community can trust and families rely on,’’ says Mary-Louise. ax is the three-letter word on everyone’s lips at the moment. It’s June and while the tax man certainly cometh, what he taketh away is another matter altogether. Working out the best way to minimise tax and secure a reasonable return is a yearly challenge. No one wants to, nor should they, pay more tax that is legally necessary, and according to accountant Luke Glasgow, the best way to guarantee that is with good planning and good advice. “We take a very proactive approach to your tax,’’ says Luke, a member of the Wealthfarm group, which has just opened at Hope Island. “By that we mean, assessing your current financial situation, looking at what was done last year and completing the return based on that information. “But because Wealthfarm has the supportive services of financial planning, property and loan assessment, it also means we can look ahead
to what you want to achieve the following year.” Luke says your tax picture can often change with circumstances. “One very good way of getting the best tax deal is to plan ahead. If you invest in property or self education, you can factor it into your tax profile beforehand.’’ Super also offers a number of tax advantages, especially for retirees or those heading that way. “It can help create wealth. You can take advantage of tax concessions, even buy an investment property using superannuation. It’s all legal and has been set up this way.” Wealthfarm, at Hope Island Marina Shopping Centre, offers a set fee for returns. Contact 1800 967 548 for more details, or to talk about your financial needs.

ervey Bay is a small slice of paradise. Simply beautiful. White sandy beaches, relaxed, stressfree living, clean, clear waterways that are home to turtles, dolphins, dugongs and magnificent humpback whales. It’s into this paradise that Noble Lakeside has built its private world of choice – a resort of more 210 designer homes and waterfront properties, that trade the ordinary for a lifestyle that is winning over the 50-plus set. Judged Queensland’s Best Natural Haven for ‘young at heart’ retirees, the resort also took out the Queensland Lifestyle Housing selection in the Seniors Housing award – for all the right reasons. No crowds, no traffic jams, no bustling rat race. “These homes have been designed with every advantage in mind,’’ says the company’s Roger Noble. “They are stylish, airy and open and most are built on the water.” Roger says while many people do retire to the resort, it’s more about being a place where people of the same age group can enjoy a lifestyle change. “Everything is here,’’ says Roger. “You’ve got a $3million clubhouse, an all-year heated lap pool indoors and a tropical lagoon style outdoors, bowling greens, spa, a library and computer room. “And there’s no mowing to do, no maintenance to worry about, none of that time consuming responsibility you’ve had to deal with most of your life. It’s a new freedom.” Another advantage of Noble Lakeside is that you’ll never pay exit fees when you sell, no stamp duty on transactions, no council rates, legal or body corporate fees. “The resort system allows for people to buy their home and pay a site fee for the land leasing, leisure facilities, general upkeep, security and all other requirements.” “You retain the advantages of a free hold title, 100 per cent capital gains and inheritance rights and if you’re on a pension, you’ll also be entitled to rent assistance to offset these fees. “If you buy one of our homes still under construction, we’ll also offer free accommodation and storage while you wait,’’ says Roger. Reducing the risk
I
t remains the most common of cancers in women, with one in eight Queensland women at risk of being diagnosed with it before the age of 85. But while those statistics present their own picture of breast cancer, the push is also on to show women how they can reduce their risk of contracting the disease. Whilst the cause remains unknown, research has identified some of the risk factors that may increase the chance of developing breast cancer – the biggest being age. Seventy-five per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer are over the age of 50, and while having a family history may also push up the risk, nine of our 10 women diagnosed, have no such history. Recently, Breast Screen Queensland’s Gold Coast Service produced a brochure explaining some steps that might help women reduce their breast cancer risk. “These include maintaining a healthy body weight, eating healthy, being physically active and limiting alcohol intake,” says Julia Foreman, the Breast Screen Queensland
Gold Coast Services health promotions officer. The brochure, which is endorsed by the Cancer Council Queensland, suggests adopting a healthy lifestyle. “As there is currently no means of preventing breast cancer, the focus in reducing deaths from the disease continues to be on detecting breast cancer as early as possible,” says Julia. “A breast screen, or screening mam-mogram, is an x-ray that can pick up small changes in the breast tissue, before they can be felt or noticed,’’ says Julia. “It’s remains the most effective way for women over 50, to detect breast cancer in its early stages,’’ she says. “It is strongly recommended that all women aged between 50 and 69 years have a free breastscreen every two years at a Breast Screen Queensland Service. “It’s also important for women of all ages to be breast aware and see their doctor without delay if they notice any new or unusual breast changes that concern them.” Information resources, such as the new brochure entitled “Breast Cancer: How can I reduce my risk?”,
can be ordered free of charge through the website at www.breastscreen. qld.gov.au For more information or to arrange a free breast screen appointment, phone 13 20 50.

Pilates focuses so much on your core muscles. Why is the core so important in fitness and health? - Ephraim Island A: Pilates teaches you to engage your core – which consists of the deep abdominal muscles, along with the muscles closest to the spine. These muscles include the internal and external obliques, the transverse abdominis or TVA, and the rectus femoris.
The TVA is the deepest of the abdominal muscles and is arguably the most vital muscles of the core. All powerful movements originate from your core. A strong core keeps your trunk stable, enabling you to generate great force with your arms and legs. These full-body functional movements are the basis for most sports. A strong core will also help keep your back healthy. The core muscles align your spine, pelvis and
rib cage. They also help determine your posture, and a strong core distributes the stresses of weight-bearing and protects the back. It can also correct postural imbalances that can lead to injuries. To help avoid back pain, focus on developing your core. v Information provided by Scott Rawcliffe, Sanctuary Cove Rec Club. If you have any fitness questions, email info@getitmedia. com.au

Practiced in a specially heated room, Bikram Yoga has 26 postures that are suitable for all ages and levels of ability. The Bikram Yoga method stretches and strengthens all muscle groups, stimulates the body’s organs, glands and nerves, moves oxygenated blood deeply into tissues and cleanses the body by flushing toxins and impurities via the sweat glands. Bikram Yoga is so much more than an exercise. It is a therapy that heals the body, calms the mind and invigorates the soul.

Q
I have been told by my employer that I can include certain fringe benefits in my salary package. I am not sure if I should bother with it because it seems very complicated. What should I do? A: Well, you are absolutely right. It is a complicated area. One of the simplest areas of salary packaging you can do is to make additional contributions into superannuation. Not only does this increase your final retirement benefits, but it can, in the case of some State government employees, result in a higher after-tax take home pay, while still retaining all other benefits. More complex rules apply in relation to motor vehicle salary packaging. We recommend this as a good option where you still have non deductible home loan debt, and especially if you are going to
purchase a motor vehicle that is mid range cost, and travelling high kilometres. For example, a $20,000 car, travelling 30,000 kilometres a year, for a person on average Australian income could save $2,835 per annum in tax, when packaged as a novated lease using the employee contribution method. The pre tax value of that benefit is $4139. Would you knock back a $4139 pay rise, just because it is a bit complicated? If you work in a public, or not-for-profit hospital, or an ambulance service, you can get up to $17,000 worth of benefits free from Fringe Benefits Tax. And if you work for a Public Benevolent Institution, or a Health Promotion charity, you can package up to $30,000 worth of benefits tax free. The range of benefits that can be packaged for employees in these sectors is quite extensive, and includes school fees, rent, interest on home loan payments, electricity and much more. The savings could be up to $13,950, in addition to the savings on vehicle salary packaging mentioned above. So although it is complicated, it is well worth getting professional advice, especially if your vehicle travels 15,000 kilometres or more per year, or if you work in the health and not-for-profit sectors.v Information provided by Quill Group.
