a n IAword I

hope you like our special bumper Chrissie issue. We’ve got loads of ideas to take the pain out of the holidays – from a celeb gift guide (sorry, no famous people actually included) – to getting the perfect beach bod (after too much trifle) and even the top 10 places you should be spending New Year – ah, Aspen, New York...I hear you calling! This is my favourite time of year...surrounded by people you love, soaking up some much-needed sun (not chained to my desk with vitamin D deficiency), an endless supply of comfort food (roast pork crackling anyone?) and not having to worry about the kilos until next month/year/ever. Not to mention a guilt-free pass to splurge on a lil’ something special for me that may or may not come in a turquoise box with a white ribbon around it… (hint, hint, Santy!) It’s also a good time to celebrate how lucky you are with the people who make your life complete. And maybe spare a thought for those not as fortunate. Who for this time of year is a painful reminder of the family members no longer in their lives. This year, we’ve seen so many families torn apart by tragedy. The Sydney couple whose six-year-old girl, Keisha Abrahams, is still missing and the sweet 10-year-old Townsville girl, Zahra Baker, whose devastating short life met a terrible fate. The Morcombe family, for which Christmas is a grim reminder of their beautiful boy, Daniel, who went missing this month, seven years ago. And the 29 families who lost their loved ones in the Pike River mining tragedy in New Zealand last month. All of these families will be engulfed in grief. And for some it’s a time of blended families – like cricket star, Glenn McGrath, who recently came under fire for having moved on, some would say, too soon after the tragic loss of his wife, Jane, to cancer in 2008. He has two young kids to raise and a broken heart. If he’s met the next Mrs McGrath, then who is anyone else to decide if it’s the ‘right time’? No one in the world can ever replace someone who is taken from you, but I don’t think he’s trying to replace her with his new partner, Sara. Nor is he trying to replace the mummy his kids no longer have and will be missing so much. He’s trying to build a new life for him and what’s left of his broken family the best way he knows how. Christmas is never easy when you have to lay a place at your dinner table for someone who is missing from your life. So on that note…celebrate all that you hold dear and what better time than now to remember; it’s people, not possessions, who make our lives complete. PS: Wonka moment: There was some cheerful news when Wills popped the question to lovely Kate, or must we call her Catherine now? I’m moving to London so I can get my hands on a golden ticket. Jolly oh! Happy Christmas!

All I

want for

Christmas is... Dear Santa, please oh please bring me a lovely one of these new Sophia Cappolla-designed Louis Vuitton clutches :) hugs and love xx.

And if you’re feelin’ real generous, Santa, I’d love one of these in my stocking too! Hermes enamel bracelet. Love. It!

Marley (6mths): A big bone...or some of mummy’s furniture will do!

Get your celeb radars out we’ve got Hollywood hottie, Josh Hartnett, filming his new movie in our city. And a pair of pint-sized celebrities of our own – the Masterchef twins.

By Gosh, it’s Hollywood star, Josh

BRISBANE’S LITTLE FOOD connoisseurs

Eager celeb-spotters in Brisbane CBD should keep their eyes peeled over the coming weeks when Hollywood hottie Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbour, Black Hawk Down, 40 Days and 40 Nights) comes to town. The brooding screen star was spied on set at Old Government House at Gardens Point last month for the first day of shooting his latest project, Singularity. Also starring in the film is a host of Aussie actors including Bille Brown and Claire van der Boom, as well as Bollywood beauty Bipasha Basu. It’s the first time Bips (as she’s known to her Indian fans) will be adding glam to a Hollywood production. But she’s happy to divulge her part in the movie. The actress plays Tulaja, an Indian she-warrior. Bips candidly says she’s willing to let the screen burn with chemistry and passionate love-making scenes. She adds that since she has locked lips on screen with her Indian actors, she will have no inhibitions doing so with a handsome bloke like Josh. Directed by Roland Joffe and penned by Ajey Jhankar, the film has an international star cast including Christopher Egan, Bond girl, Olga Kurylenko and Star Trek actor, Chris Pine. Grant Bradley from Queensland-based production company Limelight International Brisbane has great presence. “We chose to shoot in Brisbane because it’s got a great look.” “We’re based at the Village Roadshow (Movieworld) studios on the Gold Coast and shooting at Mt Tamborine and the hinterland, [but] after Christmas we’ll be back in Brisbane again shooting Brisbane locations.” The epic romance tells the story of a marine archaeologist (Hartnett) who undertakes a dangerous dive to save his trapped wife while exploring a wrecked British merchant ship on Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef. The film explores a journey back in time to British colonial India in 1778 and the days of the First Anglo-Maratha War. The project will remain filming in Brisbane and surrounding areas until the end of January.

A trip to Italy when they’re older and a deposit on their own restaurant is how Australia’s Junior MasterChef winner, Isabella, intends to share her glory with her sister, Sofia. The 12-year-old Brisbane twins are planning to pool their winnings – Isabella won a trust fund to the value of $15,000, while Sofia won $5000 for being in the top four – alongside Siena and Jack. Isabella also scored a family holiday to Japan as part of her prize package but a trip to Italy – to trace her family’s culinary heritage – is on the agenda in a few years’ time. “There are a few things we really hope to do with the prize money. We hope to share the money and save up for Italy because I’ve never been and I really want to go with my whole family, and put some of that towards our restaurant because that’s a big dream of ours,” she says. The pair have been cooking since they were five and love cooking Italian cuisine taught by their mum, as well as cooking traditional Sicilian dishes they learnt from their nonna and aunt. They say competing on Junior MasterChef has made her even more determined to open their own Italian restaurant called Is-Sofia “somewhere riverside in Brisbane”. But the young culinary hero admits it wasn’t easy going up against Jack in the final round. “Jack is very creative. He really likes to take himself to the next level with food to make it visually impressive and work with all the senses. That is really cool,” she says. And it was her confidence working through the culinary challenges and finishing with a grand total of 97 out of 100 – a four-point victory over Jack that saw her take out the chef’s hat. “There were really tough times, especially when I just saw that Adriano Zumbo dish come through – I was like, ‘What?’ That was the only time I was really freaked out.” But the support of her sister helped her on the night. “Sofe really put me there and really gave me so much more confidence. [She] said that the best thing that happened to her on the show was seeing me get into the final. That gave me a lot of faith.” December 2010

BOOK CLUB

Top

holiday reads

Eat, Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

There’s nothing like a great book to get stuck into on holiday. Here’s our top 10 page-turners for some summer R and R. Rock Chicks by Ronnie Cooper Summer’s raunchiest read will make you blush. Groupie, Coco LaBiba, has the beauty, the money, but she just needs sex, music and fame to get high, and won’t give up her wild ways for anyone… except the one guy she can never have. Marny Rammer, the pretty, shy, devoted wife of the band’s lead singer, soon realises there’s a price to pay when superstardom comes knocking on her husband’s door... in a dangerous pile of fine white powder. The manager, Lori Wyatt, is the girl from the sticks turned kick-ass band manager who can play any man at their own game – business or pleasure – and who will do anything she can to shoot her boys to the top. And she means, anything!

Underbelly The Golden Mile by Andrew Rule and John Silvester It’s 1989. The cops are on the take and the crims are on the make. They are Kings of the Cross and they run the street that put the ‘sin’ in Sin City. Kim Hollingsworth is a policeman’s daughter who wants to follow in daddy’s footsteps, though she’s a prostitute and a stripper… but that’s no problem until she blows the whistle on corrupt cops who think they can stand over her. The Golden Mile details the seedy side of life in a leafy suburb in Sydney in where the crooks conspire with their connections and the cops, who all face off against each other while the innocent, caught up in their violent and vicious web of intrigue and deceit, suffer.

December 2010

Elizabeth Gilbert is in her 30’s, she has a husband, a house, they’re trying for a baby, and she doesn’t want any of it. A bitter divorce and a turbulent love affair later, she realises it is time to pursue her own journey and discover what she truly wants from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her nature amid three different cultures, Elizabeth explores the art of pleasure in Rome, where she learns Italian from handsome, brown-eyed identical twins and gains a few extra kilos; the art of devotion in India, where she finds that enlightenment entails getting up in the middle of the night to scrub the temple floor; and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali, where a toothless medicine man of offers her a new path to peace.

Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris A collection of stories by the author who has been called ‘one of the funniest writers alive.’ Holidays on Ice is three previously published stories matched with three newer ones – all on a Christmas theme. David Sedaris’ darkly playful humour is a common thread through the book, worming its way through Seasons Greetings to Our Friends and Family, a chipper suburban Christmas letter that spirals out of control, and Front Row Center with Thaddeus Bristol, a vicious theatrical review of children’s Christmas pageants. In a sly way, it carries a holiday message all on its own.

One Day by David Nicholls It’s rare to find a novel which ranges over the recent past with such authority, and even rarer to find one in which the two protagonists are drawn with such solidity, such painful fidelity, to real life that you really do put the book down with the hallucinatory feeling that they’ve become as well known to you as your closest friends. One Day is a heart-breakingly lovely When Harry Met Sally style rom-com that traces the unlikely relationship between Dex and Em, told with accurate insight and touching observation. If you left college sometime in the ‘80s, with no clear idea of what was going to happen next, or who your lifelong friends might turn out to be, this one’s a definite for your holiday suitcase. If you didn’t, it still is. The feel-good film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess is out next year.

(including a coveted ARIA), catapaulting the girls into international stardom. While the girls demonstrated their talent for writing catchy pop-rock tunes on their “sweet but vicious” album, The Secret Life Of The Veronicas, a dramatic new sound marked The Veronicas’ musical coming of age and sent the girls into hyper-drive with “Hook Me Up”. Their pop punk leanings gave way to a more sophisticated unrestrained electro-beat, though still marked by the sisters’ signature harmonies and vocals, and innate pop sensibility. Already massive pop stars Down Under, Lisa and Jess spent most of 2008 winning over legions of new fans while on the road with Natasha Bedingfield, Hanson, and the Jonas Brothers in support of their second album. At 25, they’ve seen both previous electrorock albums go multi-platinum in Australia, reach No. 2 on the ARIA album charts, and take home the MTV Australia awards for Best Video and Best New Australian Artist. The Veronicas were even the subject of a fashion line created for Target stores in Australia. Most recently, they worked with Michael Painter to release their new single, “Love The Fall”, which became the most added song to Australian radio in the first week of July and his first Top-20 single on the ARIA Singles Chart. The Veronicas’ star power might just be what Michael needs to break into the mainstream consciousness and he credits The Veronicas for putting him in front of millions of their fans. “I think I can probably put it down to a lot of the exposure it has opened me up to. Millions of people probably wouldn’t have heard the song if it wasn’t for them,” he told reporters. Now, the ARIA Award-winning duo say they’re only “a few months” off releasing their long-awaited third album. “These last few years have been crazy,” Lisa says. “We recorded two amazing records, toured the world with our bad-ass band, and had a taste of superstardom in Australia. And are we ever looking forward to it!” Fans can expect that same gritty electropop rock edge, this time with influences from Smashing Pumpkins front man, and Jess’s boyfriend of almost a year, Billy Corgan. “He has been hugely inspiring,” Jess gushes, confirming Billy had pitched in with some of the writing on the album. “We’ve done some writing and I mean, god, what an artist. He’s been making music for 22 years. He is really supportive. We joke about him teaching me the ukulele and starting a band like the Mamas and Papas,” she laughs. Perhaps as a result of the Billy effect, the album is being produced by former Pumpkins producer Butch Vig and is due in stores early next year.

girl talk

rom THE

I

With more venom in her bite than a taipan snake, she’s always ready to dish out the dirt as she shoots from the lip, sparing no mortal soul.

T might interest you to know, my fellow lovely lippers, that the term cougar was developed by a snide young American teen (that’s where the cats live, well, Canada at least) who had an aunt who began dating or as he described it ‘devouring’ younger men. She then came up with the website cougardate.com and the spate of TV shows, movies and ‘cat-calling’ if you’ll pardon the pun, began. Let me give you a bit of a rundown on the definition – other than the feline variety – of this delightfully degrading term. Cougars (women who are 40-plus dating men eight or more years younger) and Pumas (GenXers also dating below their decade.) Labels as much demeaning as they are laughable. December 2010

LIP

Seriously, what’s wrong with a girl hooking up with a bloke who looks like he could be her kid brother? If he’s happy, she’s happy… Bob’s your uncle dating Auntie Dot. Next year, Jennifer Anniston (who also could be classed as a cougar now she’s hit her 40s and has been dating a spate of younger bedfellows) is starring in a movie called Pumas – about a couple of 30-somethings who go on younger-men dating binges. Her bestie, C-Cox, is the star of Seven’s hit show Cougartown and so the phenomenon of the insulting pseudonym has grown ever more present. I wonder if the dictionary has now had to include another explanation under the word that declares it not just a large and fearsom feline, but a desperate and dateless woman grappling with her age who hunts out young men like prey. I have to ask you this, readers. What if we turn the tables around? What do we label blokes like Hugh Hefner, Donald Trump and Rod Stewart? Do we call them Cheetahs? Perhaps for some of those lovely lotherios, it’s an appropriate tag. No, apparently we just call them lucky buggers. I didn’t hit my sexual peak until well into my 30s. In fact, I believe it was in somewhat of a deep slumber on the back doorstep for a good decade-and-a-half before that. Oh if only I knew then what I know now and all, but does that now ascertain that as I’m in my last year of thirty-dom, I’m a cougar? I’ve dated the odd bloke my junior. Okay, let’s be honest, I’ve dated my share of young lads (I lost count after I hit double digits) who could be classed as the Ben to my Mrs Robinson. And I don’t have any daughters they can date either (mostly due to the fact I’m childless, but not on purpose mind you). I do, however, have some garden and home maintenance that could be attended to by a buff young thing with muscles, a lofty toolbelt

20

and donning a pair of tighty whities. I digress, lost in the moment of someone actually being able to fix the multitide of broken fixtures, overgrown gardens and never-been-takenout-of-their-box items floating around my abode. Though I never deliberately harboured any desire to be a Mrs Robinson, or a cougar for that matter, it just turns out the men who present themselves as being available to my dear and perhaps morally-inept self, mostly fall into the ‘under-30’ category. As yet there don’t appear to be too many complaints. They enjoy being with a woman who knows how to stand up for herself, has a career and is a ‘woman of the world’ so to speak – sans the baggage of someone who might be a decade or two younger and less, well, certain. But I’m not content with the term and if the words cougar happen to slip from their lips, I’m up and outta that restaurant faster than you can say Madonna and Jesus!

URTHER adding fuel to the genderbending debate of what is for guys and what is for girls, I caught a news segment about “control underwear for men” the other day while I was ahem, ironing my underwear. Clearly I wasn’t ironing my underwear because you don’t iron them, that’s what the dryer’s for. Deeply disturbing to my manliness, this story promises a revolutionary new way for blokes to hide their out-n-proud beer guts and love handles, even adding a peck or two, or if their own ones are sliding more towards moobs than pecks, attempting to prop them back up where they started. The name of the revolution is called Spanx for Men and professes to be a slimming tool that doesn’t require diet, exercise or even getting off the couch if you’re real lucky. Proclaiming to be torso-trimming and uplifting, these are the shizzle if you’re a bit on the podgy side of comfy. With no strenuous exercise required, the most you’ll have to do is take the singlet out of its packaging, peel it on over your head and whamo; you’ve got yourself a pair of perky

pecks to rival Christopher Reeve. Control undies have never been much of a fashion favourite for this bloke. They’re a bit of a passion killer – just ask Hugh Grant who uncovered a nice brown pair of Bridget Jones’ nana undies under her skirt. I’ll take the g-banger on my girl any day or a sexy pair of French knickers, those ones that cover half a butt cheek. See the thing most women don’t get is that guys don’t really see what you see when you look in the mirror. We’re not examining each tiny bit of flab sitting on your thighs that you scrutinise daily and seem to know by name. We’re not seeing that. It’s the whole picture we’re after and most of us blokes actually don’t mind a little bit of curves. It’s soft and woman-like. But blokes’ hiding the spare tyres in a pair of tight undies? It’s just not kosher, brother. I’m not saying let it all hang out but if there’s a little too much overhang over the verandah, get your paunchy hind down to the gym and start pounding off some kilos. Let me run a word by you… mirdle. Just like the marf (male scarf) this is the term for a blokes version the girdle that also promises to “lift and tidy”. Trying to shrink your rolls into a singlet that’s four sizes too small and requires baby oil to get out of is plain cheating. Undies that are so tight they could do you a

serious injury if worn too long is not going to work, lads. Because just like an NRL salary cap scandal, all will be revealed in the end and who’ll have egg on their face then? Come on blokes, no more blurring the lines. Shape up or be out and proud, just don’t try and hide it. Next they’ll be wearing butt-enhancing undies… oh wait, they already are! Keep that line black and defined boys and leave the nana undies to your gran!

Preheat the oven to 120°C. Grease and line the base and sides of three 24cm cake pans. Grease again, then dust with a little icing sugar, shaking off any excess. Place the brown sugar, cornflour and 1 cup (220g) caster sugar in a food processor and whiz until the mixture is combined and fi ne (without any lumps). In the bowl of an electric mixer, whisk the eggwhites with a pinch of salt until soft peaks form. With the motor running, slowly add the sugar mixture a little at a time, whisking until stiff and glossy. Fold in the vanilla and vinegar. Divide

the mixture among the pans, then transfer to the oven and bake for 1 hour. Leave to cool completely in the switched-off oven with the door ajar. Meanwhile, place the remaining 1/2 cup (110g) caster sugar in a pan with 1/2 cup (125ml) water. Stir over low heat until the sugar dissolves, then simmer, without stirring, for 2-3 minutes until thickened slightly. Cool, then add the berries. Transfer half the berry mixture to a blender and puree until smooth, then combine with remaining berry mixture and chill until needed. Using electric beaters, beat thickened cream and sour cream together until thick. Run a knife around the rim of each cake pan, then carefully remove the cooled meringues and peel away the paper. Just before serving, place 1 meringue on a cake stand, then spread with one-third of the cream mixture and scatter with one-third of the berries. Repeat with the remaining meringues, cream and berries, drizzle with any remaining syrup, then serve immediately. Serves 6-8.

Arrange whole basil leaves and tomato on top, season to taste, then drizzle with olive oil. Serve immediately. Makes 6. Heirloom tomatoes are from selected greengrocers and growers’ markets.

Heat the oil in a frypan over high heat. Add the tuna and sear for 1 minute on each side – so tuna remains rare on the inside. Cool slightly. Combine the sesame seeds on a clean chopping

Dark Days He should be planning road trips and playing football. But missing teen Daniel Morcombe will never do those things. We spoke to his parents who, on the eve of what would have been his 21st birthday, instead attend an inquest.

S

blue-eyed schoolboy, Daniel Morcombe, was on his way to buy some family Christmas presents at a nearby shopping mall. But he never made it. The young boy vanished without trace from a bus stop on the Queensland Sunshine Coast 12 days before his 14th birthday. Now, on the eve of the seven-year anniversary since Daniel’s disappearance, at an inquest into his suspected abduction and murder, familiar missing-person posters of 13-year-old Daniel’s smiling face are dotted weet

Decmeber 2010

around the Maroochydore courthouse, begging people to come forward with information about his disappearance. The signs are an unmistakable reminder that, despite an exhaustive and resourcehungry police investigation, the high-profile Sunshine Coast case remains unsolved. Witnesses who saw Daniel apparently being menaced by a disheveled man with “evil eyes” told the court of their remorse over failing to intervene. “I [felt] guilty because I had this feeling

26

something was wrong and I didn’t stop,” Joan Anderson tells Maroochydore Coroner’s Court. Others who saw Daniel that day echoed her sentiments, but Daniel’s parents, Denise and Bruce Morcombe, say people shouldn’t torment themselves. “For us, that day was full of ‘what ifs’: what if Bruce and I hadn’t had to go to a work function in Brisbane; what if Daniel’s brothers had joined him on his trip to go Christmas shopping… there’s just no end to it. We’ve had seven years of ‘what ifs’,” says Denise. For the Morcombes, one of the most torturous aspects of the tragedy was relived when the inquest heard from a bus driver who failed to stop for Daniel only minutes before his apparent abduction. The Sunbus driver Ross Edmonds says he had been ordered not to stop for any more passengers because he was behind schedule. The man who gave that order, Sunbus duty controller Jeff Norman, tells the court he was following in a shuttle bus to collect other passengers. But when he reached the stop where Daniel had been waiting, “less than two minutes” after the first bus passed, there was nobody there. The Morcombes say police told them the delay was longer – perhaps five or 10 minutes. (Sunbus has since implemented new rules that drivers must pick up children.) Daniel was last seen about 2.10pm on Sunday, December 7, 2003, under the Kiel Mountain Road overpass on the Nambour Connection Road about 2km north of the Big Pineapple. “Bruce and I left around 8:30am Sunday morning to go to a work Christmas party and got home around 3:45pm. Brad (Daniel’s twin brother) was home by himself and we asked him where the other two boys were. He said Dean was at a friend’s place and Daniel had gone to the shops to get a haircut and buy some Christmas presents,” says Denise. “We were expecting Daniel to catch the last bus home, which left Maroochydore about 5pm, but I went down to the bus stop about 4:30pm to save him the walk home. When I drove down the road a bit, I saw a brokendown bus. Daniel wasn’t on it.” By this time, Denise and her family were getting worried. “We thought he might have caught the wrong bus, or been hit by a car, or a snake might have bitten him and he’d be lying on the side of the road somewhere. The last thing on our minds was that he’d been abducted.” The family searched the areas nearby but despite their efforts, they found nothing and decided it was a matter best left to the police. “By the time we got to the police station it was just after 7pm. They told us to go home and wait for him there and someone would contact us around 10pm that night,” Denise recalls. “I felt helpless,” she whispers, tears welling in her eyes. “That was the worst night of our lives.” www.getitmagazine.com.au

REAL-LIFE Detective Sergeant Tracey Barnes, who provided a 71-page report to the coroner, was forced to defend aspects of the investigation, including whether officers had acted quickly enough in chasing up new leads. She told the court more than 100 investigators had worked on the “huge” police operation, interviewing more than 10,000 people. Detective Sergeant Barnes, an officer for 28 years, has worked on other missing person and murder cases, but says the sheer number of police job logs in this investigation was unprecedented. “We would consider 500 job logs in any investigation to be quite a large investigation.” In total, almost 18,000 police job logs had been generated during the Morcombe investigation. Several people who thought they’d seen number plates on strange vehicles in the area were subjected to regression therapy, or hypnotherapy, in a bid to extract registration details from their memories. But they failed to uncover anything concrete. Officers also obtained a “cell tower dump” showing the details of anyone using their

before Daniel went missing. “The investigation has gathered information with a number of parents of children at the school saying they saw a blue sedan and a man sitting in it in the 10 weeks leading up to the abduction. They stated that their attention was drawn to the car because the man never appeared to pick any children up,” Superintendent Condon says. Detective Senior Constable Ross Hutton gave an insight into the 35 persons of interest stating a member of the community approached police reporting a blue car had been abandoned at a railway tunnel at Yandina around the day Daniel disappeared. Police investigated two men and a woman linked to the borrowed vehicle. All three people were heavy users of amphetamines. Another informant claims the car, a squarish Gemini, was originally blue but was later painted white. However, when police investigators tracked down the car they concluded the colour change was in fact the other way around – the vehicle had been white and was subsequently painted blue. Bruce Morcombe hopes the inquest and the heartache it has induced in the closeknit community, will help to change the way Australians think about child safety. “In the future, instead of wishing they’d stopped because a child is looking anxious in some situation, we’re hoping people actually will stop – or at least write down details like car rego numbers,” he says. It is not known whether the suspects with an old blue car seen lurking near Daniel on that Sunday are among 35 “persons of interest” due to appear before the inquest in coming weeks. Yet the Morcombes are confident the inquest will lead to a breakthrough. “My gut feeling is that perhaps a dozen of the POI are a lot more likely than the others,”

We were expecting Daniel to catch the last bus home, which left Maroochydore about 5pm mobile phones to make or receive calls in the area where Daniel went missing. Detective Sergeant Barnes says this is because police had received information that two people may have been involved, and it was possible the pair had used mobiles to contact each other around the time of the abduction. The details of more than 1500 phone calls were recovered. “This is probably the largest dump of telecommunications material obtained during any investigation in Queensland,” she says. But, again, they came up with nothing. Police even deployed an undercover operative in a bid to flush out more evidence from persons of interest. The covert investigator moved close to the people being watched and was on duty for almost four months, but had no success. With the reward for vital information escalating, new information has come to light in the investigation, but one fact in particular keeps surfacing – the same blue car. According to police, six mothers witnessed a suspicious-looking man scanning the Sunshine Coast primary school on several occasions but did not report their concerns until months after Daniel disappeared. Queensland Homicide Investigations superintendent Mike Condon says the man was seen in a blue 1980s-model sedan at Woombye State Primary School eight times www.getitmagazine.com.au

27

Bruce says. “And maybe half of that dozen will turn out to be of particular interest. But how you get that six down to two or one – that’s not for me to say.” He says information that might crack the case won’t necessarily come from the primary offender. “It might come from an associate, or someone who fed [the culprit or culprits], or was drunk or on drugs with them, and heard them mouth-off about Daniel.” The Morcombe family has since sold their home and resettled nearby in hopes of escaping the pressures of their public profile. They also bought a small holiday house in Tasmania, “where nobody recognises us,” says Denise. In 2005, they set up the Daniel Morcombe Foundation to promote child safety through schools and communities at events like the annual Day for Daniel. With the inquest expected to extend into next year, the hunt for Daniel has turned into one of the biggest criminal investigations in Australian history. Only discovering Daniel’s captor can fill in the blanks of that day while the rest of us can do little more than pray for a little West Brighton boy who didn’t deserve such tragedy. If you have any information regarding Daniel Morcombe’s disappearance, please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Move over Invisible Zinc, the season’s latest accessory comes in the shape of, well almost anything, and is scored on the bodies of young men and women the world over. Where once the notion of stepping out in public with visible ink was a bigger no-no than wearing a meat dress to an awards ceremony, it certainly begs the question, why are Generation-Y so obsessed with tattoos? We begin our quest for reason over a soy in a cafe just off Hedges Ave, complete with gluten free cakes, antique mirrors, and a clientele gone mad over coiffs, Wayfarers and you guessed it, tattoos. 19, Sam now has several tattoos, his favourite a portrait on his forearm of LA Ink celeb, Kat Von D. “I just like them. All of my mates have them and people notice them,” he says. Sam’s collection extends to a cluster of stars on his right hand, this the first attempt of his tattooist friend – surprisingly well-executed by someone of so little experience – two guns crossing over a background of roses on his stomach, a cheeky reference to a night out on his rear, and the inscription, “never forget the memories, from the good to the bad, friends and family,” across his shoulder blades. “Tattoos are like shields,” Sam explains. “I’ve never once considered what other people think of me, but at least here I can walk around without people staring as if there is something wrong with me.” World famous for her work, tattooist, Claire Reid, is all too familiar with Generation-Y’s love affair with tattoos but says the reasoning behind the “obsession” isn’t just skin deep. “Tattoos are a right of passage, it’s a deep subject for many people, a reflection of who a person is on the inside portrayed on the outside,” she says. “It’s not about what is ‘cool’ for younger generations, it goes much deeper than that. It’s their culture, experiences and connections with each other.” Entering her private studio, the buzzing of the tattoo gun echoes through the room. As a girl lays calmly on a bed, Claire freehands (original artwork tattooed without the use of a stencil) an elegant peacock that spans her entire hip and ribcage. Claire’s style, apart from being intricately gorgeous, is unique. Her fluid lines and tribal, verging on spiritual, subjects have catapulted her into the international arena. “Since the beginning of time, humans have marked their bodies in some way or another. It’s in our nature to want to express ourselves.” In Claire’s opinion, younger generations

of her own. And though she finds new love for her pieces every day, one thing Loretta cannot put her finger on is how this passion came about. “I always said to my parents that one day I would be covered in tattoos. All throughout high school I would be sent to detention for drawing all over my friends’ arms and legs. “Though growing up in north Queensland, away from artistic inspiration, I can honestly say that I don’t know where I would have been exposed to tattoos.” Loretta has designed a number of tattoos for friends. Using the body as her canvas, Loretta says, “You have to look at the art and the body and see how the two can tell a story. “Why should we all be blank? When I look at people with tattoos I think it is so much more beautiful than what is considered ‘normal’, it’s such an expression of yourself.” Getting deeper into the obsession, Loretta is now looking to trade her paint brushes in for a tattoo gun. “I never thought it was something I could make a living out of, but this is what I want to be doing forever. “I’m constantly looking at people’s tattoos and drawing on art and music for ideas. People are so unique and beautiful with tattoos, it’s inspiring.” With the increase in laser tattoo removal services, tattooists are quick to note an increase in customers, particularly larger images and hard to cover areas such as hands, feet and necks, which are popular with Gen-Y. Some now referring to modern tattooing as an impermanent art form. That said, why are Gen-Y so obsessed with tattoos? Be it permanent or not, when it comes to this bunch, ‘because we can be,’ is as good an answer as any. Words: Jade Burraston.

Since the beginning of time, humans have marked their bodies in some way or another are connecting with their tribal roots on a subconscious level through their tattoos. “There has been a massive shift with tattooing being brought into the mainstream with reality TV shows and younger celebrities getting work done. Now we are seeing an emphasis placed on the meaning behind the imagery.” In an effort to prove her theory, Claire is curating the Rites of Passage Festival in Melbourne next year. Along with high profile international tattoo artists, the event will showcase Indigenous art, music and tattoo culture. “It’s amazing how people are connecting with ancient traditions in 2010,” she adds. Supportive of this notion is local artist, Loretta Lizzio. A fellow enthusiast, Loretta has a few ‘toos www.getitmagazine.com.au

For over 5000 years, tattooing has been a tradition embedded within society. Though its exact origins and purposes have not been well documented, anthropologists conclude many cultures around the world have used it for ritualistic and medicinal purposes. Modern, western tattooing is achieved by the use of a tattoo gun where a needle injects carbon-based ink into the epidermis up to 3000 times per second. However, traditional methods do still exist in certain parts of the world. Polynesian tattooing is a popular art form sought out by tribal enthusiasts all over the world. A comb is dipped in pigment and the handle is tapped by another stick forcing the comb to pierce the skin. Thai-style tattooing adopts a similar method to the tattoo gun, instead using a long rod. This is tapped into the skin leaving a series of dots and lines, comprising the design of the tattoo. Other cultures look to scarification (clusters of small scars to form a design) as a way of marking the body. 1769 – Captain James Cook sails into Tahiti discovering Polynesian tattoos and the word from which the practice derives – Tatau. 1891 – Sammuel O’Rielly patents the first electric tattoo machine, a modification of the perforating pen invented by Thomas Edison. 1862 – Prince of Wales (later King Henry VII) gets a religious tattoo on his arm causing other aristocrats to follow making it fashionable. 1948 – Mummies, approximately 2500 years old, are discovered between Russia and China. Images of animals and monsters were found on their bodies. 1974 – Don Ed Hardy opens the first by appointment only custom tattoo shop in San Francisco. 1991 – The tattooed remains of 5000-year-old ‘ötzi the ice man’ are discovered between Italy and Austria. A total of 57 tattoos were found on the body, what scientists believe were the result of acupuncture-like treatments. He is the first tattooed person known to man. 2004 – Ed Hardy fashion is launched featuring the work of the famed tattooist. A favourite among celebrities from Madonna to David Beckham. 2005 – First season of reality TV show Miami Ink brings tattooing into the mainstream. This is said to be the catalyst for much of Generation-Y’s obsession, and society’s acceptance of the practice. 2006- Angelina Jolie has a “Billy Bob” tattoo removed from her arm, later replaced by the coordinates of the birthplaces of her children. 2009 – Reality series, Tattoo Hunter, starring anthropologist, Lark Krutak, documents his quest to find native tattooing traditions in the most rural parts of the world.

Australian models have never been stronger. The newest face to watch is gorgeous Queenslander, Samantha Harris. December 2010

W

ith her Aboriginal heritage, she’s been impossible to ignore as her gorgeous features and bee-stung lips are plastered over billboards and magazine covers worldwide. Now the 20-year-old is making a break for the big time. Walking a record number of shows at this year’s Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, becoming the face of Seafolly and landing the cover of Vogue Australia is all in day’s work for Samantha. But there’s more to this young beauty than her striking looks. While she may be on the brink of international stardom, she has also become the face of Aboriginal pride and like a modern dreamtime story, Samantha’s mother, Myrna Sussyer, played a pivotal role in moulding her daughter into a confident and beautiful young woman. In just one generation, the tables have turned. Myrna, herself a child when she was removed from her parents as a part of the “Stolen Generation,” has managed to reverse the cycle of destitution that so many indigenous Australians of her generation suffered. “Because that happened to my mum when she was little, she always said that when she had kids she would give us the best possible life because she was not fortunate enough to have it. When my younger brother and I were growing up, she was very protective of us because of her childhood,” Samantha has said. Myrna used her life experiences to educate and inspire her children to follow their dreams – no matter how big they may have been. “She taught us to follow our dreams and goals because she didn’t have the same opportunities. If there is something you want, then keep persisting,” Samantha says. “That is what she did with me because she knew I wanted to be a model and she kept persisting with it and we finally got there.” A Gold Coast girl at heart, Samantha grew up at Tweed Heads and eagerly embarked on a modelling career at an early age. With encouragement from her mum, she began entering local beauty pageants. And at a time when the majority of her competitors were blueeyed, blonde-haired girls, Samantha stood out with her exotic, doll-like features and striking long limbs. “I did get a lot of media attention because of being Aboriginal but it’s not about being Aboriginal, [it’s] about not looking the same as every other model,” she says. Unpretentious in her ways, Samantha wore outfits bought from local charity stores with confidence – another trait her mum instilled in www.getitmagazine.com.au

her, always believing you have to be beautiful on the inside to be considered beautiful on the outside. At age 11, a wide-eyed Samantha got her first break, winning a national Dolly magazine competition for ‘the model most likely to succeed’. Then two years later, she entered another modelling competition with teen magazine, Girlfriend, and became a national finalist. The modelling industry was beginning to stand up and take notice of this young girl from the Coast. A young Samantha was then offered representation by leading Australian modelling agency Chic Models, which carefully rationed her appearances while she finished her schooling. Soon followed a job with prestigious fashion magazine, Vogue Australia, becoming the second Aboriginal model ever to appear on the cover – with Elaine George taking the honour in 1993. “I never really thought I would be on the cover… so it was really exciting. At first, it was just a trial but I was just excited they even considered me to do a trial and then when I found out it was confirmed, I couldn’t believe it and I was counting down the days until it came out,” she says. It didn’t take long for other magazines to catch on. Samantha was soon whisked away by French photographer Patrick Demarchelier to New York for a glamorous shoot in leading

Paving the way for other Indigenous teens, Samantha stands alongside notable role models including Olympic gold medallist, Cathy Freeman, and Wimbledon tennis ace, Evonne Goolagong. “My Aboriginal heritage is really important to me because it’s such a unique culture and it’s not spoken about too much,” she says. While Samantha would be only too pleased if she could inspire someone to become the next big thing in modelling, she is aware of the bigger Indigenous picture and thrives on inspiring young Aboriginals to follow their ambitions to become doctors, teachers and musicians. And it’s this beautiful young woman’s story of persistence against the odds that will encourage other young Aboriginals to reach their full potential – a great dreamtime story to share with future generations. www.ncie.org.au Words: Ingrid Bonnor December 2010

Love Event s love Sanctuary Cove

Sanctuary Cove is now home to fabulous seasonal events.

W

ith the Community Christmas Concert being the only major event left for the year, the team at Sanctuary Cove are already working on the major seasonal events that will now be regular events on the Sanctuary Cove calendar. This year Mulpha Sanctuary Cove Developments have created and staged numerous events that have been embraced and enjoyed by all, and plans are already underway to make the key events listed below, bigger and better next year. The recent Melbourne Cup event – Cup Carnivale was Mulpha’s version of the ‘Party in the Paddock’. Staged in nomadic tents overlooking the harbour, the venue looked absolutely spectacular. Guests enjoyed lunch from Hyatt Regency Sanctuary Cove and entertainment from 100% Kylie who had people up dancing at 12.30pm in the afternoon. There’s no doubt that in 2011 this will be the place to go on the Gold Coast for Melbourne Cup. In the lead up to Melbourne Cup 100 ladies enjoyed Fashion Fiesta which was a weekend of fashion parades and workshops to help ladies www.getitmagazine.com.au

prepare for the racing season. Earlier in the year 360 guests enjoyed dinner under the stars in The Marine Village, for the Candles, Couture and Cuisine event which coincided with Earth Hour. The event was lit by over 2000 candles and natural light sources and guests were seated on one long table which was 250m long and spanned almost the entire length of Masthead Way. After 22 years, the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show again proved a major success and saw The Marine Village once again transformed into all things boats. Next year the event will grow further with more entertainment and activities for the entire family. Post Boat Show the Sanctuary Cove Festival celebrated everything that makes Sanctuary Cove tick. The two week program included fashion, food, wine, art and live entertainment with one of the highlights being the food and wine festival and afternoon of performances by Casey Barnes and James Morrison. The final event for 2010 is the Sanctuary Cove Community Christmas Concert to be held on Sunday 19 December. With Australian Idol

star Guy Sebastian being the headline act, this event is sure to draw a terrific crowd from all over the Gold Coast and beyond. Idol finalist Casey Barnes will also join Guy for the event along with local vocalist Genevieve Chadwick, the Special Olympics Dance Group, a 14 piece big band, an array of local youth talent and two choirs. The event will be hosted by Mat Rogers and Chloe Maxwell and will support their charity 4ASD kids. The big man in the red suit will making an appearance and the event will be the perfect end to a fabulous year, and terrific Christmas celebration for the local community. Sweden Ice Hotel As with many European countries, size is not an issue. Sweden may be small, but as a travel destination it packs a punch. Just think of its picturesque Alpine vistas, quaint villages, world-class skiing and rich cultural heritage. This NYE, why not celebrate somewhere vastly different in the mind-boggling art project and hotel made entirely of ice.

Paris, France From around 9pm, Champs Elysees is the place to be in Paris. People flock from all across France, bringing drinks with them. From there, you can get a great view of the Eiffel Tower being turned into a giant pyrotechnic display, as well as a fireworks show. With an atmosphere described as “bon enfant” (harmless) it’s a typically refined celebration by the French. It may lack the self-indulgence of Las Vegas, but there is no more romantic and refined way to celebrate.

10

best new year spots

When the clock strikes midnight, crowds will celebrate the arrival of 1-1-11 in cities all around the world. So whether you’re skiing the slopes in Aspen, counting down in Times Square or just at home, here’s the best spots to spend New Year.

Gisborne, New Zealand Nestled among the rolling hills and the vines of picturesque Waiohika Estate, Gisborne, Rhythm & Vines is the first place in the world to see the sun rise and the finest location in the land for a party. Now in its eight year, Rhythm & Vines is New Zealand’s biggest and best New Year’s Eve festival, with a killer threeday line up for 2010. Headlining this year are N*E*R*D and Justice, Carl Cox, Chase and Status, Chromeo, Boys Noize, Erol Alkan, Tinie Tempah and Miami Horror to keep the festivities going until dawn.

London, UK Whether you’re at a trendy club, having a few drinks at your local pub or with friends and family, if you’re in London this NYE, don’t miss some of the world’s best fireworks being launched off the London Eye. The sky lights up after Big Ben chimes midnight. Attracting around a million people every year, it’s one of the best New Year’s Eve events the world has ever seen and no Londoner should miss it. CELEBRATE Barcelona, Spain A marketing ploy by grape growers following a bumper harvest in the early 20th century, the “eating of grapes” is a beloved tradition. When the clock strikes midnight, you must eat one grape per chime, signifying good luck for the 12 months ahead. Aspen, Colorado, US A haven for the rich and famous, Aspen offers more than just good celeb-spotting. And with its stunning scenery, great hiking, accommodation and a busy nightlife, it makes for one very special NYE. Either curled up in your lodge in front of a roaring fire, a romantic carriage or sleigh ride, or at the bars, it’s all here in Aspen.

New York, US Of course, this is the most famous New Year’s Eve event in the world. The big ball descending in Times Square is watched by a million people in the flesh, and a billion more around the world. Star-studded musical performances, pyrotechnics and bars and clubs in close proximity make this as big a party as they come. It is so firmly etched into pop culture that many people feel it’s something that has to be experienced at least once in your life. Times Square is always throbbing with energy, and on New Year’s Eve it could power the entire Eastern seaboard.

Sydney, Australia As one of the first major cities on the globe to celebrate the New Year, Sydneysiders ensure the rest of the world has a tough act to follow. With a midnight fireworks display, the Harbour of Light parade and plenty of drinking hot spots it’s a world famous event. Party starts at 1pm, with the first firing of the harbor cannon.

Venice, Italy Love is in the air at the iconic San Marco Square as the Venetian New Year’s Eve returns to Piazza San Marco and Piazza Ferretto in Venice, ready to set the hearts of the city beating on one of the most important nights of the year.

Edinburgh, Scottland Dust off your tartan and raise a glass of single malt; for NYE in Edinburgh. Billed as the biggest New Year’s Eve festival in the world, Hogmanay kicks off with tens of thousands of torch carriers as they create a river of fire from the historic Royal Mile to the Son et Lumiére. Then the massive street party, live music, DJ’s and bars through ‘til midnight fireworks. www.getitmagazine.com.au

To define eyebrows use short quick strokes to mimic the look of natural hairs, using a brow pencil like Bobbi Brown’s, $44, will define the brows and give eyes an instant lift. Fill in the sparse areas and give your brows shape and definition. Set brows with The Body Shop brow and lash gel, $20.95. A quick-drying gel that helps tame, hold and define eyebrows.

First, start with your skin. It’s best to always prep the skin with a primer it ensures the make makeup application goes on smoother and provides a good base for hydration. Australis Primer, $13.95, is a clear light film which is applied to the skin prior to the application of foundation. It smoothes and refines skin texture and prevents foundation from fading. If you want to go authentically retro, try Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream which was available in the ’60s and even has a vintage-inspired ’60s packaging version, $35.

2

Once your skin is moisturised, check your complexion for any blemishes, pigmentation, or dark circles. If you are prone to blemishes, try a durable concealer like M.A.C Pro Longwear SPF 10 Concealer, $32. It features creamy, buildable coverage for a flawless natural finish, pat lightly over the blemish, blending outward towards the edges. Finish with a dusting of translucent powder.

3

Now is time to apply foundation to the entire face. MAC has a great foundation called MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF15, $48. The foundation provides medium buildable coverage and a natural matte finish. Apply your foundation with a foundation brush and dab on cheeks, forehead, bridge of nose, and chin. Blend in circles until you have built up to your desired coverage.

or all of you gals that love the TV show, Mad Men, and adore the elegantly retro makeup of lead actress, Elizabeth “Betty” Draper, we’ve put together nine steps to recreate Betty’s ‘60s siren inspired make-up. Betty Draper: Betty has two distinctive looks; her daytime housewife look and her going out evening look. At home, Betty’s look is very natural with a sheer foundation and black eyeliner and mascara. But come evening, Betty goes a little thicker on the eyeliner and dons a brighter lipstick. Sexy siren hair aside, you can easily recreate Betty’s look yourself at home. To start you’ll need the basics – a good foundation, a heavy concealer, a matte red lipstick that complements your skintone, black liquid liner, thick mascara, and a light powder blush.

38

5

For eyeshadow; sweep a neutral matte shadow all over your lids right up to browbones in a shade that’s just a few hues darker than your natural skintone. Bobbi Brown Eyeshadows have a silky, matte formula that glides on smoothly and blends easily, $44. They come in numerous fleshcoloured shades. Betty’s sexy eyes are part of her appeal and are defined with a ‘60s mod style, which is easily achieved with a liquid eyeliner. To start, line the top lash with a liner like MAC Liquid Eye Liner, $32. It is ideal for lining and defining eyes, you want a subtle cat-eye here, so delicately extend the line just past the outer edge of the eye, and gently curve the line upward, creating a wing shape.

7

Next, curl lashes with the trusty, legendary Revlon Beauty Tools Cushion Grip Lash Curler, $19.95 and apply 2-3 coats of black volumising mascara like Clinique High Definition Mascara, $38. Since the liner and eyeshadow are somewhat subtle, you want to sex up with the look with big, thick, dark lashes.

8

Sweep a tad of blush along cheeks, blending with your brush until it looks like a natural flush. You want a light finish, one that resembles your actual cheek colour when you blush naturally. Try Bourjois Limited Edition Little Round Plush Pots, $20.

9

Finally, those lips. Try Clinique’s gorgeous red, High Impact Lip Colour, $36. This will ensure a red hot mouth. Now all you’re missing is a ‘60s-inspired dress, a stiff Tom Collins and an updo of pincurls and you’re cooking!

Tips to get bikini buff by summer. Indulged in a litte too much Chrissie cheer? Follow our guide to getting bikini-ready.

Get Motivated

The first tip to get the bikini body you have always wanted is to find motivation. Use any trick in the book that will work for you. Keep a picture of yourself in your purse and take a look every time you feel like that unhealthy treat. Visualise yourself looking and feeling good, create your own personal “reasons list.” Keep a piece of paper and pen handy for a couple of days, jot down reasons to get healthy and the ways your life will improve.

Ditch the Donuts

Watch your carbohydrates intake and skip carbonated beverages. If you eliminate or reduce what Oprah Winfrey calls the “white stuff,” that is, rice, potatoes, white bread, pasta, anything with white flour and sugar, you will have taken the first step. This is what is going to give you more energy and help you control cravings. If you do only this, you will see your weight going down without much effort.

Get motivated by group fitness

If you can’t make it to the gym, do something you like for no less than 30 minutes a day. Esteem Fitness is all about real women getting real results. Welcoming all shapes, sizes and fitness levels, this exercise is perfect for those who want to have fun and enjoy exercising with other like-minded people outdoors. Under the watchful eye of a qualified personal trainer, one who is a registered nurse, clients are challenged by exercises guaranteed to provide results. Esteem Fitness offers boxing and strength training classes that will tone and shape every inch of your body. Call Carol now on 0437739984.

Say goodbye to cellulite

Endermolgie reduces the appearance of cellulite while increasing energy levels. It detoxifies, drains excess fluid and firms skin. At Paradise Beauty, each client is assessed to determine the number of treatments needed. Packages have been created to incorporate all the elements necessary to achieve optimal results. By combining Endermologie treatments with a nutrition program and sessions in the detox box, results are significantly increased. 12 Grice Ave, Paradise Point (07) 5529 6736.

Drinking purified water can definitely help “flush” your body of unnecessary fat cells. Water purification is a process of removing undesirable nasty chemicals, materials, and biological contaminants from impure water. Purifying your water through a filtration device may reduce the concentration of parasites, bacteria, algae, viruses and fungi. Invest in a water purification device and know you and your family health is in good hands.

5

Hit the detox box

The Detox Box helps detoxify your body, by sweating out the accumulation of potentially carcinogenic heavy metals as well as alcohol, nicotine, sodium and cholesterol. By inducing profuse perspiration the Detox Box deeply cleanses the skin, while improving tone, texture and colour. “Perspiration therapy” dates back before the Romans and their baths. In fact, virtually every society including the American Indians used sweat lodges for detoxification. It is said that if we are not perspiring, we’re missing as much as 27% of our body’s ability to rid itself of toxins. Available at Paradise Beauty 12 Grice Ave, Paradise Point (07) 5529 6736.

A fake tan is the preferred method of a healthy glow in our Australian climate. It prevents the potential damage of too much time spent in the sun. As a result, the rates of skin cancer have been declining for the past two decades while the popularity of fake tan products continue to grow. The primary ingredient is dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, they work by reacting to amino acids found in our skin cells. This interaction is what provides the tan. Rid yourself of Cellulite this Summer!

If you’re small on top, look for tops with padding, or an underwire, demi-bra style that makes the most of a dainty bustline. Choose a top with adjustable shoulder straps and back so you can tighten to help fill out the top line. Bigger busted ladies may need some extra support; underwire tops can work well and look great. Haltertop bikinis can be a good choice by offering support, while providing sexy cleavage. Look for styles that are banded around the midriff and can be tied at the back and around the neck. This style will give lift and allow you to make adjustments for a personal fit. For short legs or torso, find a suit that is cut high on the thigh. This will make your legs look longer. If you have curvy hips, then all the better.

Paradise Beauty is offering clients a results driven cellulite treatment package. By combining Endermologie treatments with a nutritional program and sessions in the detox box you will find your results are rapid and significantly increased. Your health along with appearance will be dramatically improved.

Be the best that you can be with the help of the team at The Layt Clinic.

A

woman’s desire for fuller and more youthful breasts in the form of augmentation is fast becoming the most popular cosmetic procedure in the world. Many women become self-conscious about their lack of curves believing their breasts are too small or unevenly sized. This could be due to lack of development or changes following pregnancy or weight loss. And although breast asymmetry is normal,

sometimes size discrepancy can be more severe causing women to feel embarrassed about their size or shape. Strategic placement of an appropriately sized breast implant can correct significant breast asymmetry and restore a full and healthy breast profile. Specialist plastic surgeon Dr Craig Layt understands breast augmentation is a delicate process. “It involves emotions, decision-making and confidence to initiate that first appointment. That’s why our whole team will dedicate our time, resources and energy to tailor a package that is specifically designed just for you,” he says. The dedicated team of specialist consultants at Dr Layt’s clinic are highly-trained and their compassion and knowledge, acquired through many years of combined experience is paramount. “From the first contact that you make with us, our staff are devoted to your needs,” Dr Layt adds. “Help is available and education is the key.” Every step of the procedure is explained during a private consultation and Dr Layt has developed an informative DVD for patients considering this elective surgery as a means of helping them learn more about the procedure at their own leisure. “The DVD helps women understand the process. They can easily relate to the visual images and spoken explanation. They can watch the DVD several times and develop a clear

understanding of the procedure,” Dr Layt says. Written information from the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons and the clinic are also provided but Dr Layt says the DVD allows patients to go through the experience, make notes, and prepare questions before their consultation. “The DVD is not designed to replace a surgery consultation. It is designed to inform patients about the procedure and aid in their decisionmaking. Consultations are still very important in the overall process. During this time we establish the size and shape of the breast implants. We discuss the options of positioning the implant in front or behind the chest muscle, the incision used to place the implant, and the type of implant used. “The size after breast augmentation is a result of breast tissue and the implant. The same implant size gives different results in different women so it’s important to assess each patient individually.” Putting his patients at ease, Dr Layt adds that proceeding with breast augmentation is a personal decision. “Each patient has their own reasons for wanting the surgery and all patients should be provided with as much information as possible.” Visit www.drlayt.com or contact the Benowa clinic for a copy of the breast augmentation DVD.

dedicated to rejuvenating you... plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery and non-surgical options Dr Layt and his staff embrace a philosophy whereby individual patient assessment, the latest in surgical and non-surgical techniques and complete patient care are combined to provide optimum results.

HAIR HAIR

reat

me right

Your hair gets put through all kinds of damaging processes so treat it right and restore some gloss with at-home conditioning treatments.

A

s the warmer weather approaches and our hair is subjected to the many elements we will all benefit from doing a hair treatment. Shine, silkiness, elasticity, bounce, strength... it all comes in a bottle. Purchasing treatments from the salon can be daunting if you don’t understand what the hairdresser is on about. Here it is girls; all the things you need to know about treatments and why they work. Protein vs moisture When hairdressers talk treatments they talk protein and moisture, so you think what the? Think of it as meat vs water. You need meat to make you big and strong and water to keep you hydrated. The balance of these two things is important for our bodies to work and it is the same for our hair, however, detecting if your hair is weak or dry can be tricky for the mere mortal so read on... Weak, damaged hair needs protein Hair is weak and damaged from chemicals – eg: colouring and lightening, perming or straightening (chemically). Hair that is snapping is an extreme case of damage. If you imagine your hair to be a ladder with the rungs snapped out of the middle (damaged) the protein in treatments helps to rebuild the rungs to make the hair strong again. These are often called reconstructing treatments. Dry, brittle hair needs moisture Hair that is damaged from the elements or heated appliances is dry. A moisture based treatment is the answer. It is similar to us when we are thirsty, all we need is a good drink – of the correct type, and shiny luscious locks very quickly reappear. Too much of a good thing Like eating steak and steak only – not good. Although it is good to give your hair a treatment overdoing it, like anything, is not so good www.getitmagazine.com.au

especially when it comes to protein treatments. Too much protein will make the hair hard and brittle and with excessive use can cause snapping. Balance Hair, like us, needs balance and keeping the balance of protein and moisture is very important. More often than not hair will not require only one of these technical ingredients ,but both. So the very smart people in the hairdressing world have many, many treatments that are perfectly meat vs water balanced for your convenience. If you can’t decide if your hair is dry or damaged think about what you have had done with it or done to it and you will quite easily work it out yourself. Of course if you are still unsure or need more guidance see your professional stylist and they will prescribe the perfect treatment for you. So what are they doing that’s so different? Owner of Zone 3 Therapies Shane Gilroy explains: “In every initial consult, I perform a Cellular Health Analysis that shows my client’s body fat, active muscle tissue, water levels, toxin levels, energy levels and cellular health performance, and biological age. From this I can see where each

individual needs to focus; how much weight to lose or gain; and which program would benefit them best. For one client it may be stress reduction, for another a detox, and for another we just focus on nutrition and weight loss. The way I see it, I give my clients what they need to make better, long-term decisions.” After Zone 3 Therapies have made their mark, Fitness Done Different jump right in. The personal trainers take the nutritional and supplement recommendations made by Zone 3 Therapies and incorporate them into an optimal fitness program. They also determine what their client’s major focus is, and what type of training is necessary to get them operating at peak condition. To ensure definite results, clients are supported throughout the entire process of transformation, by their personal trainer and continued contact with Shane Gilroy and his team at Zone 3. Fitness and eating go hand-in-hand. You can’t exercise to burn away bad food, and you can’t eat well to reach your highest level of health and wellbeing. By pairing the specialties of these two companies together, clients receive holistic and complete care in both the health and fitness industry. ith the strength of the Australian dollar and the huge increase in the number of cruise lines and itineraries on offer, cruising the Mediterranean continues to grow as a popular way to see this part of the world. Harvey World Travel Helensvale & Hope Island has consultants with first hand experience to assist in selecting the right cruise for you. Because of value for money and the relaxing option of only having to unpack once, many people are choosing a cruise as the ultimate way to relax and see Europe. The Mediterranean The Mediterranean is full of historical ports offering culture, architecture and superb food. This region offers cruises from Spain to Turkey and everywhere in between. The huge variety of cruises means you can select from a range of itineraries where for example you might board in romantic Venice, cruise through the Greek Islands and wind up meandering along the coast of Turkey to intriguing Istanbul. Or perhaps you may want to enjoy the options of cruising the Greek Isles and then disembarking on the last night of your cruise at Dubrovnik so you are ready to explore the beautiful Dalmatian coast. You have the option of choosing a cruise that runs for just three or four days around the Greek Islands or one that takes a leisurely 17-18 days to cruise around the Med and allow time to go ashore and explore – the choice is yours.

www.getitmagazine.com.au

TRAVEL Northern Europe Many of the cruises to this part of Europe depart from Southampton which suits a lot of Australians who often combine cruises with land holidays or a visit to relatives in the UK or Europe. Itineraries include; UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Poland, Germany, Iceland, the Arctic region and Russia. These cruises normally take place over the European summer and visit a variety of quaint coastal villages and fascinating cities such as Copenhagen, Stockholm and St Petersburg.

Selecting the right Cruise ship and Cabin The great thing about cruising is that even as you read this article there are new ships being built and as a result there is a wide range of ships on offer so you will definitely be able to find the right ship to suit your individual needs. However to help you make the right selection you will need to ask yourself some questions. First and foremost what is the purpose of your cruise? For example do you want a relaxing cruise with out a lot of children around or is it quite the opposite and you want a family cruise on a ship that has the all the child minding facilities available. After that is the very important question of “does size matter?” For some people there is nothing better than a crowd and entertainment, while others want a more intimate style of a luxury cruise vessel that may only accommodate 200 passengers. Then there is the choice of a ship with all the entertainment you could wish for or at the other end of the scale, ships that offer lectures on a range of subjects from professional qualified University lecturers. When it comes to the style of cruise there are some that really do enjoy the glitz and glamour of formal attire while others dine in smart casual attire. Dining Even that very important part of any cruise, dining has a range of options. Some ships offer the traditional style of formal dining where you

www.getitmagazine.com.au

53

choose the time you want to dine and are then seated with the same fellow passengers for the duration of the cruise, in more recent times many cruise lines now offer the option of freestyle dining. This allows you to eat anywhere at any time the dining rooms are open with no need to reserve in advance. Some offer feature restaurants that specialise in a specific style of dining – Italian, Asian or a good ol’ steak restaurant. Some cruise lines include these special restaurants in the cruise fare you pay, while others may charge. The Greek Islands One of the most popular destinations is around the Greek Islands. To see this part of the Mediterranean you again have a number of options. There are cruises that range from just 3-4 days that depart from and return to Athens at the Port of Pireaus, 45 mins away. Or there are cruises of seven days from Venice. If you want to enjoy the full Greek Island experience then you really should consider “Greek Island Hopping”. A package that offers all your ferry or hydrofoil transfers, accommodation with breakfast and transfers. Greek Island Hopping packages are independent (not escorted and can be designed to suit your individual needs). A handy tip: To take full advantage of these wonderful Islands make sure you travel from mid June to late September when the weather is at it’s very best.

The former Miss Australia beauty has made the tricky transition to TV, with a hosting role on a new dating show. You won the Miss Australia beauty pageant in 2008. How has life changed for you since then? In 2008, I was just about to finish a psychology degree but since then I have deferred university and now I’m working in modelling and television. It has been an absolute whirlwind and I have enjoyed every moment. Tell us how you began your modelling career? I was approached while shopping with my Mum at Chatswood shopping centre at 16, and did it part-time when I had time off from school. I remember being so stiff and nervous on my first job and thinking I would never get it right but now it’s second nature to me. What have been some of your favourite career highlights? The Miss Universe pageant itself is like nothing I have ever experienced. The size of it and being able to spend a month with girls from all over the world. Other than that I have had some pretty incredible photo shoots and walking in Fashion Week is always spectacular, but Dating in the Dark has probably been the biggest highlight so far. I have had so much fun filming and learning the art of flirting and the dos and don’ts of dating! You have recently been announced as the host of reality TV show Dating in the Dark. Tell us about the show: It is a social experiment with three single guys and three single girls. The reason the show really works is because there is no prize involved, they are just looking for love. They go on a series of dates in the dark and at the end get to decide who they would like to see in the light. After their date is revealed they decide if they would like to continue seeing each other outside the house. It is a way of testing the age old question, is love really blind?

so I’ve loved being able to spy on the contestants while in the dark room. You don’t realise how much you rely on other people’s reactions to decide how to act. It’s funny watching a girl thinking the guy is really into her. She starts leaning in, playing with her hair, smiling and the guy might be on the other side of the couch with a blank expression on his face leaning out. Would you ever take part in a public social experiment like this? Why not? One of the contestants said to me it takes all the hard work out of dating. By not relying on looks, some people are able to look for things that really matter. What a good lesson to learn and a fun way to do it! Dating in the Dark Australia airs Wednesdays at 7.30pm on FOX8.

You studied psychology before your modelling career took off, have you found your previous study came in handy for the series? Definitely! I studied relationship psychology as one of my subjects and I also have an interest in reading body language and the signs of lying, December 2010

profile Name: Narelle Bouveng Occupation: PR Director and Journalist. Area of expertise: PR and Media Relations for Premium Brand Clients How do you define success? Success is having a happy, healthy family, good friends and a fulfilling, interesting career. Does the glass ceiling still exist for women? The only restrictions that exist are the ones you place on yourself. If you find a career that doesn’t suit your aspirations, find one that does. Tell us about your career path and how you got to where you are today? I have always loved writing and aspired to be an editor of a glossy magazine. I worked in various roles to get closer to the industry from telesales to advertising executive, marketing, events and finally I achieved my goal and made it to the chair as an editor. At first I thought I had made it – this was the place I aspired to be, but the realisation that this was not “it” set in and I started thinking there must be something more. With a swag of contacts, a good appreciation for how the media works and the support of my family and friends, I embarked on a career as a freelance media consultant and while I still contribute to magazines too – I love working with all types of businesses and coming up with the ideas that make them stand out from the crowd. What are your greatest career achievements? Having the courage to go out on my own. It was a turning point and one that I have never looked

55

back from. During your career what notable people have you met or worked with? I have been fortunate to work in an industry that constantly rubs shoulders with some incredible talent. In fashion, I would have to say Alex Perry and Akira Isogowa stand out as does Kirstie Clements, editor of Australian Vogue. She is a really cool woman who made it to the top of Vogue through perseverance, determination and undeniable talent but she is also not ashamed to admit she never needed a degree. Photographer Georges Antoni is also a personal favourite. Professional advice: Make only friends. Bridges should be built and never burned. What do you wish you knew now that you didn’t when you began your career? That saying no is ok too. You cannot be everything to everyone and the sooner in your career you understand and implement that, the less chance you will have of burning out. Has working at a senior level toughened you? I work alongside people that are serious about their success, investing their money in me to advise them. I have to be tough, to go the extra mile. This can at times be tough, but I love the challenge and to date, don’t think I’ve let anyone down. How do you balance a personal life and work? My family comes first always and while they are respectful of the time I spend nurturing the business, I am respectful of spending quality time with them too!

S Christmas uburban

We asked four Brisbane families to share their own festive season family traditions.

Together finally in our own home and then going down to Palm Beach on the Gold Coast to shar e the remainder of the day with extended family and friends. Do you have any special tradition s? This year is our first opportunity to make traditions of our own as for the first time in four years, we will wake up in our own home together as a family. Previous year s, my husband and I have been apart because he’s an army officer and has been previously deployed or in hospital over Christma s. What makes Christmas special to you? It’s something to celebrate with your family and friends and is a little bit magical….yes, I admit I still belie ve in Santa! What is one thing you would like Father Christmas to leave under the tree for you? My husband is trying to talk me into an apple ipad but I secretly think it’s for him.

Names: Holly, Darren, Madison and Drake. Attard Professions: Company Director & SAHM. How will you and your family be spending Christmas this year? We’ll be home entertaining anyone who pops over. It’s always a casual, fun affair with unexpected guests. We also plan to take our new boat out on the water and cruise the Islands. Do you have any special traditions? I like to keep the decorating very traditional considering I’m originally from North America. It’s just so hard finding a real Christmas tree! I’m a bit shocked at all the ‘colourful’ decorations this year – pink, orange, lime green and purple have no business partaking in the holidays! We also have the classic holiday music on continuous loop. What makes Christmas special to you? Family, being with loved ones and seeing the kids expressions Christmas morning. My son says baby Jesus. What is one thing you would like Father Christmas to leave under the tree for you? My daughter, Madison, would like a Barbie, Drake would like a remote control car. Darren, my husband, has put in a request for bike gear and I would like a kitten!

We all go to church Christmas eve. And Christmas day is my husband Andrew’s birthday, so the deal is: he has to open (at least) one present first before the kids all rip into theirs…it’s a tough call for littlies, but I am so proud of them, because they always comply…just! What makes Christmas special to you? Too many family and friends squashed in together. It’s too hot. There is too much food. Too much laughter. Too much noise. Too much mess. Excess, excess, excess…to the extreme. I LOVE IT! What is one thing you would like Father Christmas to leave under the tree for you? I am hoping for a lovely new outfit to wear on Christmas day maybe a one shouldered number with a big ruffle frill across the front…in black. Some sky high heels, bootie style in a hug-your-foot stretch mesh fabric…hmmm?, a few eco-beauty books that you can only get online from the USA, plus comedienne Anh Doh’s Happiest Refugee autobiography and a fabulous Tigerlilly Bikini.

N

othing freshens your face like a bright, white smile. We spoke to Dr Suresh Rashid from A Smiling Place dental clinic to get the lowdown on cosmetic teeth whitening. What causes teeth to discolour? Teeth can either discolour from the inside or the outside. Internal discolouration can be caused by trauma or tetracycline (antibiotic). External discolouration is simply caused by exposure of the teeth to stress and stains. Additionally it’s also good to know that it’s the outer enamel layer of the tooth that gives the tooth its white colour. The underlying dentine is slightly yellow. Aggressive use of abrasives (including some toothpastes) will thin the enamel down and cause the yellow dentine to show through. In this situation treatment to replace the lost enamel may be the best option. What products actually work? For external discolouration the best results are usually obtained by using a combination of a short intense in-office procedure using very strong whitening agents supplemented by a longer, deeper, gentler technique using custom fitted mouth trays and a weaker gel. There are two types of peroxide that are used for tooth whitening – carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide. How do these products work? Hydrogen peroxide breaks down to oxygen and water. Oxygen gets between the prisms of the enamel of the teeth and oxidises stains.

How long does it last? Again like a white shirt it depends on what you expose the teeth to. What are the benefits of teeth whitening? While looks aren’t everything a great smile that flashes pearly white teeth does a lot for the receiver as well as the giver. If you like the look of your teeth you are also more likely to look after them better. Is it painful? If done properly, no. Common causes of sensitivity are holes in the teeth or worn down teeth that are not first treated and sealed. Additionally, acidity is a great preserver of hydrogen peroxide. If the formulation is acidic it can harm the teeth and cause mild to extreme tooth sensitivity and at A Smiling Place we don’t recommend them. Are there any side affects? Yes, teeth can be weakened and overwhitened by extreme over use. Under proper control and guidance this is not an issue. If I have sensitive teeth, can I still get my teeth whitened? Yes, by firstly following the steps above. Secondly the type and concentration of peroxide can be tailored to minimise sensitivity. Visit Dr Suresh at A Smiling Place. A HOROSCOPE

A

stro girl

Want to know if you should splash on some new heels or save for a rainy day? Waiting for Mr Drop Dead Yummy to saunter through the door? Our new spirit guide has all the answers (well, nearly all).

Capricorn 22 December-19 January All things spiritual may be of interest to Capricorns as they are invited to turn their natural focus on the material world to a higher power. This may come in many forms. Use the information and inspirations from Spirit to benefit you on all levels, especially the areas of love and finance.

Taurus 20 April-20 May Lets talk about sex baby…this month Taurus will be drawn to the deeper expression of love and intimacy. Maybe try out a Tantra workshop to learn ways to connect more fully with your partner; this unfolds the rich spiritual aspect to your physical enjoyment

Aquarius 20 January-18 February This month Aquarians may feel a pull towards a spiritual retreat of some kind, or the urge to embark upon a spiritual quest. Perhaps you’ve always dreamt of trekking to Machu Picchu or sitting at the feet of an Indian Guru. Set your plans and travel to mystical lands, both inner and outer. You will experience great rewards.

Gemini 21 May-20 June Finances are up and down this month and you may need to make unexpected decisions regarding money. Don’t despair though as this may include a windfall or win, which of course means you can buy those shoes you’ve been eyeing up!

Pisces 19 February-20 March Be patient during the festive season as there is potential to have tempers fray and exchanges with family boil up and over! You may find a temporary separation or holiday from a stale relationship is just what’s needed to relight that flame of desire and passion. Aries 21 March-19 April With Venus, the planet of love, still in retrograde this month, its time to take some time with decisions of the heart for those of this sign. Whether you’re planning a wedding or a divorce, be the tortoise and not the hare and you will definitely win the race.

Cancer 21 June-22 July Dreams might be wild this month but don’t put too much weight in them as truth (especially if they feature Brad Pitt). Your psyche is making way for some great times ahead, magnetising the perfect people at the perfect time to unfold great opportunities in love, work and fun!. Leo 23 July-22 August Love may come knocking at your door as great romantic connections are being aligned. Your interest may be on the less serious kind of love and this will be fulfilling, but for those Leos looking for marriage there’s a great chance there too!

Virgo 23 August-22 September Loosen up, as stifling your life with too many checks and controls may be limiting your enjoyment. Let Santa do his job and check your list twice, whille you join in the fun and frivolity of the season! LIBRA 23 September-22 October Stabilising your home front is the focus this month as family and loved ones are most important now. This doesn’t mean you have to forget your career and your social life, in fact these will benefit from your focus on hearth and heart. Scorpio 23 October-21 November That Scorpio passion and magnetism erupts this month as your love life reaches stellar heights. As Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, wraps her charm around you as your love planet Venus returns to your sign, you become very hard to resist! Sagittarius 22 November-21 December Listening to your body and not overindulging is important this month, as you may pay the price through your health later on. Don’t make important decisions regarding a marriage or relationship as your love planet has gone on a Christmas break, making it hard to see clear choices. Be patient and all will be revealed.

Barrymore

A child star at seven, a drug addiction at 13, and a stellar acting career at 21. There isn’t much Drew Barrymore hasn’t done. Or seen. Child Star.

You could say there is something very healthy about Drew Barrymore, who grew up in an entertainment family dynasty that in most cases doesn’t produce the healthiest of people.
Raised by a single mother, Drew featured in her first TV commercial when she was just 11 months old. By the age of seven, she landed the coveted role of Gertie in E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. After ET, her star was certainly on the rise. But with fame comes notoriety and the exposure to the fast-paced world of Hollywood. By day, she had a steady stream of film roles and by night, her time

was spent in bars and clubs with her mum, Jaid Barrymore. By her early teens, Drew was admitted to rehab, recovering from cocaine and alcohol abuse.
An attribute to the wild ways that has been a part of the Barrymore family tradition. Her paternal grandfather, the legendary stage and film actor John Barrymore, drank himself to death at the age of 60 and her father, the late John Drew Barrymore, also drank and drugged his career into oblivion.

Charlie’s Angels.

The brown-eyed beauty is a true survivor and breaker of the Barrymore family mould in many ways. Apart from beating addiction, she’s starred in more than 35 films, including 1999’s Never Been Kissed, 2000’s Charlie’s Angels, 2003’s Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and the recent, Music and Lyrics, all of which were produced by her own successful production company, Flower Films. Proving she’s not only a brilliant actress but also a savvy businesswoman.

Drew is different from her contemporaries in the sense that she is unaffected by her “Celebrity Status” maybe because from an early age, she was always a star. It was never aspired to – it was the norm. Being in the public spotlight is the way it’s always been for Drew,
despite two early divorces, she seems to have found peace in her thirties donating much time to her nominated charities and her other passion in life – travel. Drew reflects on her life in this quote:

Everyone is like a butterfly, they start out ugly and awkward and then morph into beautiful graceful butterflies that everyone loves. December 2010
