ow many celebrity confessionals is it going to take before the bucket is full and they learn how to deal with life. Certainly seems the year for it. Every time you turn around, there’s another one fessing up and falling over themselves with sorry sentiment. First, we had Tiger stalking through the night with his golf bag of cocktail waitresses. Then along came that other ‘mistress man’, Jesse James, whose questionable behaviour saw the missus, Sandy Bullock, left high and hung out to dry in full Oscar view. Shame. But both paled into insignificance with the arrival of the right royal redhead, Sarah Ferguson, and the royal mess she got herself into. She not only took the cake, but managed to quaff it down as well. The details of this sorry little episode have been truly done and dusted. But really, whatever was she thinking? Even a cursory glance at the FergieGate tapes made it clear what needed to be done. No discussion. No argument. Straight to the tower and off with her head. There was nothing else for it. That Grand Duchess of Rort, waving her redhanded fingers around dismissively in the air to the tune of $500,000. And what on earth for, you may ask the privilege of ‘opening doors’ to her ex-husband Prince Andrew, who you’d have to admit is not the most inspiring royal in the pack. But just when things were looking

their bleakest, Queen Oprah arrives to put wrongs to right with one of her famous lunchtime chats and a ‘tough love’ interview. Fergie couldn’t spill those beans quickly enough. Out they tumbled. Problems with her drinking, her eating, her money, her image – oh, yes, and problems with the ‘in-laws’. She should never have gone royal in the first place. Big mistake. The ‘family’ was never that keen. However, all is not lost Fergie. Time you took a deep breath, pulled your shoulders back, your belt in and changed your loose and feckless ways. First thing you have to do is cancel the Harrods home food delivery. Then, check out the neighbourhood and track down your local Aldi store. There’s got to be one somewhere close to Windsor Castle. And now that Beatrice has given up being big, maybe grab some of her old clothes and do a daughter-mumsy recycle. Plus, what about raising the price of the Budgie books. Way too cheap for a truly royal tale anyway. It might all seem a bit harsh at first. Not exactly what you’ve become used to. But with a bit of cautionary cost-cutting, you won’t know yourself. In a few short months, you’ll be back in the thick of it and well able to afford a good hairdresser. – Sharon Kells

Out with the Old in with the new ™ Bullseye Personal Fitness introduces the system to turn your body into a fat burning machine There are numerous reasons why strength training is important in any exercise program with benefits such as stronger muscles, stronger joints and building bone density to protect from conditions such as arthritis and osteoporosis. This article introduces the proven principles and methodology of the Metabolism Boost system by exploring the key benefit of raising the resting metabolic rate (RMR) to burn more calories, therefore burning fat 24/7, even when at rest, to create a lean and toned body. A calorie is measured by how much energy your body can consume from any particular food. Your metabolism or RMR is what determines how many calories you burn each day. So in order to achieve a lean and toned body the key is not just how many calories we can burn “during” exercise, it’s how many calories we can force the body to burn permanently. Raising your metabolism is the real key to long-term fat loss and physique change. The fat burning zone is a myth - sorry it doesn’t exist! At lower intensity exercise the body may burn 50% of the calories from fat, while at higher intensity exercise it may only burn 35% of calories from fat. However, at higher intensities you burn much more total calories, and more fat calories overall than you do at lower intensities because the resting metabolic rate increases and continues

to keep burning more fat around the clock. This makes higher intensity exercise more beneficial than lower intensity exercise. To explain in more detail, high intensity exercise, as in anaerobic exercise, is where you feel lactic acid burning in the muscles and the accumulation of carbon dioxide through the lungs, resulting in feeling practically out of breath. Strength training

Burn Fat 24/7 and the interval style of training causes this effect and increases the metabolic rate post exercise. The key with anaerobic training is what is known as EPOC (Exercise Post Oxygen Consumption). EPOC is basically the “recovery of metabolic rate back to pre-exercise levels” and “can require several minutes for light exercise meaning less calories and

fat burned post exercise and around the clock, and several hours for high intensity exercise meaning more calories and fat burned post exercise around the clock.” Essentially, we want activities that keep us burning more calories after the exercise session. Low intensity exercise is aerobic, such as jogging etc and does not raise the metabolic rate anywhere near as much as anaerobic training post exercise. Promoting or maintaining muscle mass will make that muscle mass work harder and with the correct training protocols it will elevate the metabolic rate to burning calories constantly and turn your body into a fat burning machine, even when you sleep! The tradition of frequent amounts of excessive cardio exercise has gone. Come and get involved in this new, proven approach that has helped many people achieve great results with the latest scientific research. alk in to a room with nik Conomos and the music he’s bringing will turn your head. His versatility, vocal range and tone take on any genre, any artist. He’ll deliver you the magic of Michael Jackson, the moves of Justine Timberlake, a little bit of Bubble, a little of Alicia Keyes and to make sure no one is left out, just a touch of Justin ‘Baby’ Bieber. nik has one of those voices that make the hairs on your arm rise and your feet tap at their own discretion. He recently performed at Get It magazine’s recent Great Long Lunch and guests demanded to know more about this hugely talented artist. So we sat down with nik to find out what inspires him and his music. ging? When and why did you start sin I started singing when I was about 15, just over 10 years now. I just started singing in my room and eventually my Mum and sister would overhear. They helped pushed me to get more into it. So, I just started performing because I loved singing and R&B style vocals. What was the fi rst song you le

arned?

not quite sure about the first I actually learned, but the first I remember performing in public was It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye to Yesterday by Boyz II Men. Is your family musical?

not really, I mean everyone loves music but the only real musical person is my uncle, my Dad’s brother. He plays the drums, bouzouki and sings. Other than that, we are still trying to work out where music came from for me  Which artists do you admire?

Craig David was a huge influence when I was younger because of the style of his music and because his own style was very similar to what I’d like doing. Michael Jackson is someone I admire because of his talent, quality of music and also longevity of his career. l memories?  What are your fondest musica I would have to say it all began back in High School singing at the School’s Talent Quest. The response and support I received was unbelievable. As no one at school knew I could sing, it was a bit of surprise and shock to most, I was scared in the beginning, but once people heard me sing, all my doubts and fears went out the window.

What do you think of today’s pop music?

It’s really very rare these days to have singer or band that affects you in such a way that you will always go back and listen to their music for years to come. Artists and songs are just too ‘right now’ and short term. They just don’t last the test of time. I can admit to writing songs like that myself just to be competitive in today’s market, but have also written other more emotional songs that actually have meaning to me. These are songs that in years to come you continue to listen to. How do you balance your music with your life?

I have been fortunate for the past three or so years to be doing music on a full-time basis, so it is literally my life. But in saying that, it can be a bit of challenge trying to balance performing and working on original material. It can be very time consuming writing and producing songs, but it’s all something that I love doing. – Ingrid Bonnor

angel THE YEARS LEADING UP TO FARRAH’S CANCER BATTLE HAD BEEN FRAUGHT WITH PERSONAL TRAUMA AND DISAPPOINTMENT.

F

ARRAH Fawcett was never meant to die – certainly not from cancer and certainly not so early in life. She was Hollywood’s own winged angel. Blonde, beautiful. An immortal with perfect hair, perfect teeth and a perfect life that presumably comes with such a package. For men, it was her combination of potent sexuality and prom queen pretty that demanded attention. For women, she was the all-American beauty who grew up to marry one Hollywood prince, enchant another and live in a palace in Tinsel Town. Her life was the myth that devoured Hollywood, complete with the trappings of a classic fairy tale. But last year, it ran tragically short of the happy ending when the former star of the 1970s television phenomenon, Charlie’s Angels lost her three-year battle with cancer. Her death, occurring on the same day as that of pop star Michael Jackson, was not unexpected. Her battle with the disease was a matter of public record after Farrah, despite years of fiercely protecting her private world, revealed all in intimate detail in her final stages. She turned to her closest friend and confidant, Alana Stewart, ex-wife of rock star Rod Stewart and herself a Hollywood golden girl, asking her to film her illness and the treatments she undertook in a clinic in the foothills of Germany’s Bavarian Alps. The footage was to later become the subject of the compelling documentary, called Farrah’s Story, which was released to celebrity fanfare in America shortly before Farrah died in June last year. It was reportedly watched by an audience of more than nine million, who collectively mourned the loss of the fantasy that had identified their own youth. But now, on the anniversary of Farrah Leni Fawcett’s death, the legacy of what started out as a simple video diary, continues to create controversy, both for the confronting

way it documented the star’s final years, and the questions it raised on the options for treating cancer. Farrah had been led to believe she was free of her original diagnosed anal cancer, after undergoing surgery and a series of radiation treatments. But when told by her doctors that it had not only returned, but had spread to her liver, she decided to travel to a clinic in Germany, with her friend Alana and partner, Ryan O’Neal, where a system of integrated medicine was being applied. Although using conventional medical treatments, the clinic took a more holistic approach, focusing not only on boosting the patients immune system, but in also supporting their emotional and spiritual being. This was not merely a ‘new age’ indulgence. It was paramount in their medical approach and treatment. While the documentary has shown a brave and determined Farrah, facing her pain and fear with dignity and quiet reserve, the years leading up to her illness had been fraught with personal trauma and disappointments. She had coped with the loss of her elder sister, Diana, who herself had died of lung cancer in 2001, and the death of her mother four years later. She had been concerned for her young son Redmond, who was in trouble with both drugs and the law, and her own tempestuous love story with long-time companion Ryan O’Neal had run its course after he admitted an affair with a much younger starlet. Their split affected Farrah deeply and her bizarre appearance on a late night talk show lead to suspicions that she was herself addicted to drugs. The tabloids also targeted what they claimed were her ‘less than perfect’ cosmetic surgeries, printing unflattering photos as evidence of her desperate attempt to preserve her youth and beauty. It was a concoction of stresses that many health experts strongly suggest could easily have contributed to her illness.

get it feature Even O’Neal himself questioned whether his erratic behaviour had added to Farrah’s deteriorating health. The German clinic was seen as her ‘last hope’ and she wanted the journey filmed in order to benefit other cancer sufferers. “When she started this, I think she viewed it as a record that she could look back on,’’ says O’Neal. “But it didn’t turn out that way.’’ Whatever her reasons, Farrah wanted the no-holds barred version – the uncensored anatomy of an illness, where the needles, the sickness, the pain, the loss of her golden hair, the hopes and the disappointments were revealed in full view. She wanted people to know about the days when the sun would shine and she would laugh, as well as the dark nights of the soul that no one wanted to face. According to Alana, it was a project close to Farrah’s heart. “There were a lot of times when what she was going through wasn’t pretty,’’ says Alana, referring to aftermath of some of the more invasive cancer treatments. “In fact, some procedures seemed just that – too invasive to film. “But all the time Farrah insisted. “This is what cancer is,’’ she’d say. “This is what happens.” Alana stayed by her friend’s side throughout the ordeal, the days, nights and weeks she spent there unfolding her own story, one she chronicled in her book My Journey with Farrah, published late last year. It not only recorded events of the star’s illness, but also revealed the powerful bond the two shared after meeting 30-years earlier, when both were ‘hustling for work in Hollywood’. “At first, we kept bumping into each other at casting calls,’’ says Alana. ‘‘I thought she was so beautiful and someone it would have been easy to hate, because she was so perfect. “But from the beginning, she was just so easy to love. “There was no bullshit. What you saw was what you got – an actual down-home girl in Hollywood.” They supported each other through relationship fallouts, the raising of children, at Thanksgiving dinners where they baked pecan and coconut pies, and at endless birthdays, which they never failed to celebrate. Now they were together in the most personal of ways, sharing a fight against a disease that bore down heavily on one and engulfed the other. “I didn’t want to watch my best friend go through this,’’ says Alana. “I felt numb and scared and wanted to cry. But it wasn’t about me, so I had to do whatever I can to help her.” And she did, at every stage. The book, which is written in a naïve, simple style, tells of a deep love and friendship between two southern Texas belles – one who grew up to be a golden angel, the other her trusted guardian. Part of sales from it will go towards the Farrah Fawcett Foundation, which Farrah herself asked to be set up before her death.

get it cover story “The foundation is aimed at funding alternative methods of cancer research, clinical trials and prevention,’’ says Alana. “And for my part, I’ll continue to be her voice and fight for alternative treatments,’’ she says. “I’ll help in any way I can to raise money for her foundation for cancer research. “Farrah’s given so much to the world, the least we can do is keep the flame burning.” v

Treatments for cancer move into new territory

T

HE increasing interest in people seeking treatments for cancer from overseas clinics is inevitable, says Grace Gawler. Grace, who runs a cancer support and advice centre at Paradise Point, says its only natural they would look for life-saving options if they feel they have exhausted what their own medical system has to offer. “The treatments being undertaken in hospitals and clinics in Germany, and in fact in most parts of Europe, come under a title of integrated medicine,’’ says Grace. “And a lot of people mistakenly label these alternative. “But that’s not the case. Often they’re straight-forward medical procedures, albeit some which could be considered experimental in the sense that our hospitals here don’t make them available. “However, there is no real reason why they couldn’t be eventually be offered through our medical system.” Grace says these clinics are delivering impressive results in treating cancers, and consequently attracting patients from all over the world. “The main difference is that the disease is targeted on a number of levels, and follow-up given to prevent spread from the primary cancer. “The cancer itself is treated in what is seen as the most effective way, whether that means surgery, hyperthermia application where the body temperature is elevated, targeted chemotherapy or other options. “But there is also emphasis put on strengthening the body with follow-up concurrent immunity boosting homeopathic and vitamin infusions, as well as sensible, nutrient-dense diets that support the patient.” Grace says in the case of Farrah Fawcett, once she had recovered from surgery and radiation in America, she would have suggested heading straight for Germany. “She would have been given immediate follow-up treatment to boost her immune system and help fight off any ‘seed’ cells, that often migrate from the original cancer site to the liver.’’ Grace says a lot of conventional medical treatments focus on immediate cancer removal, then blasting of the site with chemotherapy or radiation. “But it’s one of my frustrations that patients don’t realise this secondary risk and aren’t given support to try and offset it.’’ Grace, who for more than 30 years has worked in supporting people with cancer, has investigated both mainstream and alternative treatments at length, and believes the best result comes from a combination of the two modalities. She works with highly trained oncological and immune system specialists in Australia, and through the clinics in Germany, and has helped a number of people connect with these overseas treatments. Grace is also in the process of establishing a charitable trust, called Integrated Cancer Solutions, which will help educate patients and health practitioners. “People need to be fully informed with cancer, to have an understanding of what may or may not work in both alternative and conventional areas. “They need to make choices on their health, based on the clearest information, and need support in doing so.” v

A thousand GODS smile

OTH the word Bali and the place it inhabits are of special sig-nificance to Australians. A few short years ago, you would have put this down to the availability of cheap imported fashions and decorator goods. Or to the closeness of an exotic island holiday destination just a short flight away, or perhaps the trail of Aussie surfers lured by the dream of a wave and the pull of a laid-back lifestyle. But on October 12, 2002, a series of bombs that ripped through the island’s central Kuta district, leaving 202 people, including 91 Australians, dead in their wake, changed the memory. From there on in, Bali became another place entirely. The innocence and safety that had previously been part of the Bali experience, was torn away by the explosion. And while the tragic aftermath was felt deepest in human loss, the secondary impact fell on Bali’s people and island itself, which relies heavily on tourism for the bigger part of its economic survival. Almost overnight, the well dried up. The tourists bailed and the Balinese struggled to make a living. They looked to their spirituality and determined they were being punished for allowing Kuta to become a centre of western decadence, with its flashy bars, nightlife and undertones of sexuality. The thousand gods who lived to protect their island paradise had deserted them. The balance was shattered, the toll extracted. But as the shock began to subside and time placed distance between the tragedy, Bali began to get its life and sense of belonging, back. The tourist trade revived, cautiously at first, but with each successive year growing a little stronger – the reasons plain and simple. It’s hard for anyone to turn away from the beauty and charm of this island, with its green terraced countryside, contrast of wide sandy beaches that run along the coast, the city centres with their bustle and bargain of markets and traders, and the undeniable warmth of the Balinese people, that has long been one of the island’s strongest drawcards. Even the tragedy has a perspective in the daily life of the Balinese, who also saw many of their own innocents killed. They have erected a permanent monument on the bombing site in Legian Street, Kuta, which has become a first port of call for returning tourists, particularly Australians. The Balinese mark the event with a ‘nine-day ‘cleansing ceremony’ known as the Kuta Karnival, a festival they’ve labelled a ‘celebration of life’ and see as a way to repair the ‘grievous damage to the island’s karmic reckoning’. For Australians, Bali was and continues to be a much favoured retreat. One obvious reason for that is the closeness – just a few hours by plane from Perth, and six and half from Brisbane, the preferred route for Queenslanders. On first viewing, Bali can hit the senses of western affluence with stark reality. “The first experience you have can be a bit of a shock,” says Toni Allen, a Gold Coaster who has been travelling to Bali on and off for seven years.

“Things can look a little run down and dilapidated, compared to what you are used to. And when you arrive in Kuta itself, it’s so full on with people.” But she says, after a few days on the island, the atmosphere and holiday mood kicks in. “Then, it seems like everything comes to life, and you start to see it in a different light. There’s so much going on and you start relaxing into the rhythm of the Balinese. ’’ She says the first few days are what she calls the ‘hustle and hawking’ days. “You’ll get people constantly walking up to you wanting to sell you things. “They’ll ask you if you want a car, want transport, even if you want to hire a helicopter. “They’ll offer to sell you sunglasses, cut your hair, do your nails. “It’s a bit overwhelming, but once they know you been here a day or two, they’ll often give up and leave you alone.” But she says for every irritating moment Bali throws up, there are ten thousand other delightful and welcoming ones that entice you. The main commercial area of Kuta is full of restaurants that never seem to close, and the numerous bars and clubs are more like social outlets than drinking venues. “This is where you can meet up and mix with other visitors and local residents,’’ she says. “The food at most of the sidewalk restaurants and stalls is relatively cheap, fresh and the variety of choice, fantastic. “You can find yourself eating the best local dishes, like nasi Goreng made the authentic way with proper fried egg, or walking along the road a bit and ordering a shepherd’s pie or roast pork dinner. “And not only that, but they also make the most delicious cocktails.” She says another attraction is the shopping, reason enough for the flight over. “For me, the bargains you’ll find are a lot better than those you’re likely to come across in Thailand or Kuala Lumpur,’’ says Toni. “There’s no real comparison. You’ve got all the labels doing their imitation best, and the quality is great – whether you’re talking bags, shoes or clothes in general. “It’s a paradise if you like to the shopping part of life – but still be prepared to do some bargaining.’’ If you want to explore the island, transport is just a taxi away. A simple taxi ride will deliver you to Jimbaran Bay, about 15 minutes south of Kuta, a popular escape for visitors. Here you can enjoy a seafood meal, that once freshly caught, is prepared, cooked and served to your table, set up on the beach with the world’s best view.

“You sit there, this beautiful seaside setting, sandy beach in front of you, fantastic meal to eat – and then a Balinese musician comes along and serenades you with a ukelele. “The food is a little more expensive than in the bars and markets, but its still great value. A little surreal, but really delightful.’’ At night, Kuta revs up with its circuit of bars and clubs. What used to be a simple village has become the island’s main resort area, and transformed by tourists, traffic and crowds. Most like the street pulse, but for those wanting a slightly slower pace, the nearby Legian Street offers a quieter, less intense and certainly less crowded option. The safety issue, for obvious reasons, is never far from consciousness in Bali. Toni says although she felt completely at ease most of the time in Bali, there was still the awareness to watch out for any unusual street activity or events. “There is a lot more security around these days, and the authorities have clamped down on traders harassing tourists, so there are a lot of people about keeping a check on that. “But although you aren’t walking around scared, you do keep your eyes open for anything out of the ordinary going on.” Apart from the daytime shopping, the beachtime relaxing and the nighttime clubbing, there’s also the beauty of Bali to explore. The Bali Safari and Marine Park is top of the list. It weaves Balinese culture in with a spectacular showing of wildlife. You can ride elephants, watch the piranha feeding frenzy, stroke tigers and exchange hugs with mischievous monkeys, and at the park’s Tsavo Lion restaurant, you can dine gourmet style next to the full-length glass panels that bring you face to face with the resident lions – who take a keen interest in your eating habits. The artistic retreat of Ubud, located in what is known as the island’s mountain paradise, is also a must-see listing. It is rich in tradition, from its stunning and intricate architecture to the cultural dances, artworks and warm welcome offered by the local people. The movie Eat, Pray, Love, based on a story about a search for peace and inner understanding and starring Hollywood’s Julia Roberts, was partly filmed in Ubud. It features a backdrop of the stunning mountainous beauty, green terraced rice fields, exotic temples and an atmosphere, which is nothing but pure. The island of Bali is exotic, traditional, mystical and recovering, all in one. It has a lot to offer the traveller and the tourist – and its gods are inviting you back again to pay their paradise a visit. v – Sharon Kells

ustralia’s swimming sweetheart, Stephanie Rice, is both the official ambassador and official face of Jaguar’s prestigious brand. It’s just one of the roles the Olympic triple gold medallist has undertaken since stepping out of the pool and into promotional work. She spoke to Get It magazine this month about her life and her future plans. How is life out of the water? I recently bought a house, that I share with two flat mates, so I’ve been sourcing furniture and soft furnishings for my home. I’m also enjoying the weekends when I get a chance to chill out, catch up with my friends and go see a movie. What are your passions outside of the pool?

Stephanie Rice: Olympic Medallist What advice would you give aspiring athletes? Be the best you can be. Give 100 per cent and have no regrets at the end of the day. Learn from your mistakes and be able to use that as a strength. you  are  the  brand  ambassador  for Jaguar. What does the vehicle  represent to you? Jaguar represents luxury driving with a sporty feel, technical excellence, prestige and fun. Jaguar and I have an

designing underwear and swimwear. Although I have no formal training, I am developing some designs that I would like to explore in the future. I love working with the media and doing photo shoots. you  come  across  as  a  fun  loving  person,  does that apply in competition? I’m a Gemini. One side of me is fun, outgoing and cheeky, while the other is stubborn, selfish and competitive. This works for me, as I can switch on the stubborn/competitive side when I need to.

n Europe, the cake is king. And as a boy, Imre Szarka paid it his due respects, regularly heading out with his parents to the local café for a cup of coffee and a slice or two of his favourite. It was a ritual common in his native Hungary, with pastry shops and coffee houses providing the social network hub for every town and city. “The cafes and cake shops were just part of our daily and weekly routine,’’ says Imre. “You’d often start the day there with a coffee and a pastry on your way to work, then later, end up there again during the day and the night, where you’d meet up with friends and family. “You’d drink steaming hot coffee, catch up on the day’s events – and eat your way through an assortment of the most delicious treats.” As it was, Imre managed to sample quite a few before deciding to leave Hungary, travel the world and eventually settle in Australia. But he made sure he didn’t miss out, bringing the tradition with him and three months ago, opening The Old Danube European Cake and Gelato shop in Helensvale. “When my wife and I came here, there were a few European cake shops about, but nothing really in the style we’d been used to,’’ says Imre.

D

“So, we opened one for ourselves.” They advertised for help and found a fellow Hungarian, a pastry chef who had trained at the famous Gerbeaud, in the heart of Budapest, one of the largest and most traditional café-confectioneries in Europe. “Our chef was there for 18 years, creating and baking the best pastries and cakes you’re ever likely to eat.” The shop is decorated in Hungarian café style, and serves cakes, pastries and traditional hand-made gelato. As well as the original Black Forest Cake, Imre is a particular fan of Eszterhazy – a cake that comes with custard cream, walnuts, a hint of brandy flavour and a topping of white fondant chocolate. The café’s coffee is also top of the range, with Imre brewing up what’s known as the Dancing Bean – the pick of the grindings and from the highest grade South American Arabica. The café is also on hand to supply fresh cakes for birthdays, office parties, weddings and anniversaries.

I work all day at a desk and have been experiencing stiffness and pain. I’ve heard Clinical Pilates is a good form of exercise but am not really sure what it is or if it can help. A: The pace we live and work today puts extra pressure on our body, which is often not noticed until problems arise. Long hours at a desk and poor posture can leave you with an overuse or underuse of certain muscles and structures – which in turn set up bad habits and patterns in your body. While prevention is always better than cure, when problems set in – and pain and stiffness is certainly an indication – then you need help. Exercise is always recommended, but when physical symptoms are involved, you need to take care with just how you go about exercising. It’s important not to make the situation worse with the wrong approach. Pilates itself is not new, but physiotherapists have combined its known benefits with their own understanding of spinal stability to create what’s known as Clinical Pilates. It’s used by some physiotherapists to successfully treat many conditions, but it’s essential from

the outset that you have a full body and health assessment, to identify first up what areas need focusing on, or are related to the problem. And because you have stiffness and pain, you need to approach all exercise from a safe and supportive stance. Based on the assessment, a physiotherapist can work out a program that will support any vulnerable areas, while helping to restore wellbeing and balance in a safe, natural way. Once an exercise prescription has been decided on, they can also offer small personal classes, to make sure you are using the right techniques and getting the best results from the program. They may also provide various equipment used in Clinical Pilates, such as the reformer, trapeze table, exercise ball and floor exercises. These boutique classes are a great way to get well and fit with a small group of friends, and tone up in the process.v Information provided by By Philippa Gilbert, PhysioMax, Hope Island. Q

I want to buy a house but am not sure where I should purchase it. Can you make any suggestions?

A: It depends whether you are buying a home to reside in, or an investment property. If you require a home to live in, you should take into consideration all of the attributes you want most in your home – whether it’s two bedrooms, four bedrooms, size of the lot, etc. Obviously, the price you are prepared to pay will have a great influence on your selection. Usually, the further away from the central business district or CBD you go, the less expensive property becomes and you will usually find that homes are not as old, or do not need as much maintenance. But be aware that in some areas, a large number of new

homes have been sold to investors so they will be rented out. Gated estates are becoming extremely popular with buyers due to the increase of burglaries in homes not protected by security gating. But if you want to make the right decision, work out the requirements you need in a home, the amount you can afford to spend, and in which suburbs you can have these need met. When you locate a home that interests you, do a little bit of local research. Have a chat to the neighbours in the street and the proprietors of the local stores to find out what the area is like and what price other homes around have sold for. If you can get access to a service known as RP Data, which lists the prices of homes and general details, you can check the status and sale value of similar homes to what you’re looking for in your area of interest. For an investment property, you should also consider all of the above aspects, as well as one located close to transport, schools, shops and general amenities, as this is usually what your tenants will be looking for. It doesn’t matter if you are buying a family home or an investment property, if you hold onto the property for a period of at least five years, its value will increase.v Information provided by LJ Hooker, Hope Island. This stylish couple’s lives revolve around the fashion industry, uniting them on another level with their shared passion for fashion.

How would you both defi ne  personal style and grooming? Josh: My style changes daily. I love experimenting and trying something new. To achieve the right look, I get my hair styled every two weeks and, as I have a beard, I trim it on a regular basis. I travel a lot so a good moisturiser always helps and I love a great aftershave. This season it’s the 1940s and this is also reflected in the scent I like to wear. My favourite at the moment is Fleurs de Bois by Miller Harris. As I live such a hectic lifestyle, I don’t have a lot of time for lengthy beauty regimes, but I love having a facial and massage every two months. As a couple do you fi nd you use similar products? Sometimes. Josh always takes my shampoo and I sometimes take his aftershave, I love men’s fragrances. you are both busy people, how do you fi nd sharing a  bathroom basin? This is a constant battle. I think Josh spends as much time in front of the mirror as I do, but in the mornings, this is also a space where we catch up and talk about our day ahead. Josh, what personal grooming tips do you have for  the guys? Trimming is essential. A good aftershave defines your personality. andy Rueves had an unusual job. She was the in-house radiographer for the all-American basketball team, the Chicago Bulls, ready to attend to injuries of the accident prone players at a moment’s notice. But often, that meant waiting around for hours for the twists, turns and breaks to arrive. So in between, Sandy occupied herself making beads – her hobby catching the eye of the Bull’s star player, Michael Jordan. The winged warrior asked her to make him a bracelet, which she did, and in the process, he not only became her first official customer, but kicked off a business that 18 years later has spread its charms worldwide. Sandy named the business He Beads because of the Jordan piece, but then expanded to the feminine version in She Beads – both lines highlighting a delightful collection of hand-rolled clay pieces that have become a huge hit with the celebrity set. Beyonce – not that she’d be one to need any help – says the pieces make her ‘feel like a woman’, and host Randy Jackson is also a fan, flashing the colourful beads on his American Idol appearances. And She Beads has now landed in Australia, even better, within purchase range at Mount Tamborine. Local artist and jewellery designer, Nikki Chenoweth, has become the country’s sole distributor of the range, a job delivered after she went seeking samples to include in her own pieces. “I’d seen these beautiful beads and wanted to put some of them in my own creations,’’ says Nikki, who’s work has been highly commended in the Australian Fashion Awards showings. “So I called up America on the off chance of having some sent over, and Sandy happened to answer the phone. “She said she couldn’t sell single beads, but asked if I’d be interested in taking over representation of the company in Australia. “I couldn’t do it quickly enough,’’ says Nikki. She now has her She Beads shop in Gallery Walk, Mount Tamborine and runs classes showing people how to make the jewellery. “These beads are very unique in that they are made from what we call cane pieces – a bit like a stick of candy cane, where the design runs right through to the core,’’ Nikki explains. “Sandy creates the original designs, many of them named after women, and sends them over in the cane cuts.’’

Beauty

and the beads She Beads has now landed in Australia AND even better, within purchase range at Mount Tamborine. One such range is named after American presidential wives, in the trio of Michelle, Jackie and Betty. “Michelle Obama’s line has a lot of golden colours and was inspired by her yellow inauguration dress. The Jackie Onassis beads feature a lot of blue and the Betty Ford are almost vintage, with chocolate browns, florals, and some purples.” According to Nikki, each design is incredibly intricate. “When we teach the making of these pieces, we work with a single round clay bead as a template, then slice off extremely thin bands from the cane design. “These bands are then moulded onto and around the template bead, fired in the oven and cooled – giving you the most beautiful and playful creations of beads, that are then threaded with silver or crystals into jewellery.” Nikki says because of the core cane process, the beads never fade, the patterns never shift, and the design never washes off. “They are in the clay itself, not just painted on, so they are there forever.” Nikki has She and He Beads in all styles and designs on show in her Mount Tamborine shop, and classes are run continually. She says the beads are a hot favourite with women, but guys are also big fans of the range. “And if a guy like Michael Jordan is man enough to wear beads, then anyone can,’’ she adds. v

There’s simply no reason for children to be traumatised by the idea of having their teeth attended to.

I

t was just a simple trip to the dentist when she was 12-years old, but it set Stephanie Wilson’s career in stone. “I remember that visit very clearly,’’ she says. “A nurse took me through into the surgery. My mother wasn’t allowed to come with me, she was told to wait outside. And then, I went in and had four teeth extracted in one hit.” It left some nasty memories, but on the way home in the car, Stephanie made a promise. “I said to myself that when I grew up, I’d become a dentist and work out a way to look after children’s teeth so it would never hurt.” It was the kind of throwaway remark young children are prone to make, but in Stephanie’s case, it was a promise she saw through. She did indeed grow up to become a dentist – although the correct title for her work is oral health therapist, a term given to those professionals looking after the needs of children and adolescents. She also followed through her commitment to ‘take the hurt’ out of the dental experience. “It is important working with children and adolescents that they feel safe and comfortable with all aspects of dental care,’’ she says. “And there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be so.” In that spirit, she searched around in her bag of personalities and discovered the Tooth Fairy – a fair-haired friendly

sprite, with sparkling wings and an air of golden inspiration. With the help of her builder husband Grant, she also created a place of magic in her dental practice in Brisbane, turning an all too familiar clinical environment into one of colour, comfort and playfulness. This month, Stephanie opened the second TFI – Tooth Fairy International – clinic at Labrador on the Gold Coast, which is expected to become as popular with both parents and children as the Brisbane centre has. “There’s simply no reason for children to be traumatised by the idea of having their teeth attended to,’’ says Stephanie. “At both our clinics, our assistants also dress in fairy mode,’’ she says. “Children are welcomed and put at ease from the start, the treatments are carried out in a non-threatening environment, and even the terminology, such as references to fairy juice for rinsing, is different.’’ “Parents are more than welcome to stay with children during treatments and everything is done to relax and give the young ones trust in what we are doing.” And what about adults? Is there room in the fairy kingdom for them? “We have a completely different facility for adults,’’ says Stephanie. “We call it our dental spa.” She says the two major reasons adults tend to steer clear of dentists are a fear that they will be admonished for having neglected their teeth, or for having put off visiting the dentist for too long. And the second factor is sometimes an even bigger fear – the cost. “But we promise, in our clinics there’s no scolding, no retribution going on,’’ says Stephanie. “Whatever your dental problem, however long you’ve left a visit, it’s not important. What is important is sorting out your teeth and dental health and giving you the best outcome we can.” While Stephanie’s speciality is children’s teeth, the adult side of the practice is handled by dentists Rhett Shapcott and Cherekee Wilson. However, the same relaxing and pampering factor is also turned on for patients, with aromatherapy oils replacing the sterile smells of surgery, massage chairs available before and after treatments to help relax, a make-up and hydration station for post ‘fix-ups’. “You can come in and talk about any concerns with your teeth,’’ says Stephanie. “You may be an adult who has put off cosmetic work, maybe you want to have your teeth straightened, missing teeth replaced, or just general health improved. “We’ve also have Bill Kelner Read on staff, who specialises in amalgam-free holistic dentistry – so we want you to have those choices.” And as for the matter of cost, Stephanie says that concern should always be discussed with the dentist. “From what I’ve seen, our prices are a lot lower than many of the dentists on the Gold Coast. “But whatever the issue, we offer treatment options and ways to stagger costs. It’s not worth the sacrifice of your teeth and general health not to at least talk it over.” v

lot of people would love the advice and help of an interior designer in creating style in their home. But it’s often seen as a luxury they can’t afford. However, designer Denise Hayes says that doesn’t have to be the case. “Style certainly doesn’t have to be expensive,’’ “It’s more about how you put things together than just throwing around expensive pieces and designs – in fact that way is often much easier to do for a designer,’’ Denise says . “But if you use your skills and the expertise of the

profession, then you can create beautiful spaces just by using clever mixes of colour, lighting and design.” Denise, who runs a company called Rapid Revamp, has made her name making over highrise units and apartments on the Gold Coast, many of them dated and in desperate need of attention. “My approach is to create a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. I like to mix and match colours and styles to reflect the owner’s choices, and use materials that will add warmth and interest to the space, but in the same vein, remain timeless. “It’s an approach that is often simple and stylish, but well within the cost range of the homeowner.” Design doesn’t have to be expensive to look effective, says Denise. “That’s where the eye and skill of the designer come in. It’s all a matter of how it’s put together – and that’s what I do best. I work within any budget to deliver the results.” Denise can carry out a consultation, advising on colour, arrangements, lighting and feature pieces, which you can then implement yourself, or she’ll see the whole process through for you, from beginning to end, co-ordinating all work. “Whatever you need doing, simply call me and talk about it.There are always options and costs to suit – and a style for every taste.” Contact Denise on 0414 862 929. v
