MAKING SENSE

not always in fashion

F

ASHION is a curious animal. It dictates our dress code from season to season. It frequently turns common sense on its head, throwing practicality out with last year’s hemline. And it can have the oddest habit of seeing us ‘simply dying’ to launch a new outfit at the start of the year, only to promise never to be seen ‘dead in it’ by year’s end. There’s no point in trying to ignore it. Take the anti-fashion route, and before you know it, you’ll have morphed right back into the ‘in crowd’, creating trends simply for being ‘out’. It’s normal behaviour, in female circles at least, to want to dress up, to primp and preen and look your sexy, sophisticated best. But there has to be something more behind decisions that see you spending more money than you have, in order to own more clothes than you’re ever likely to need. Ingrid Bonnor, style writer for Get It magazine, believes a lot of the fashion choices we make relate to our ‘clothing confidence’. It’s about knowing your body – its height, weight, shape – and knowing what looks good on you,’’ says Ingrid, herself a professional model who learnt the art of ‘combining’ on the job. “You may really like a fitted or belted outfit. But if it effectively cuts you in half, shortens you and makes you look disproportionate in the process, then as fashion, it doesn’t work. “On someone with a different shape, different proportions, the same outfit could look stunning. That’s why you’ll find so many variations to style and in the results you’ll get.” Ingrid says the same rules apply to colour, cut and design. “A great designer will pull all elements of fashion together to create harmony, even if in that process some aspects are actually creating contrast – it will all still pull together. “But you then need to take those same elements and make them work for you, for your colouring, height, shape, and also your particular style – that’s part of the essence of fashion.” At last month’s prestigious L’Oreal Fashion Week, where haute couture came out to play, Ingrid gained some clear insights into what will be hanging in the public wardrobe in the months ahead. “Fashion weeks like L’Oreal are big news. They circulate the major cities of the world following the seasons, and lay out the influences that will become the style – and often those that will be copied in less exclusive ranges,” says Ingrid.

“Here’s where the best established designers and fresh new talent bring their ideas, pushing their perceptions to the limit in each collection.” It’s also where you find the dedicated followers of fashion, the style ‘groupies’ who move from one capital city to the next, Jimmy Choos and Manola Blahniks following behind. “These fashion weeks come with an important hierarchy,’’ says Ingrid. Designers, and the industry, depend on the fashion writers, media representatives, photographers, celebrities who might be snapped on the red carpet in their outfits, and more recently on a host of fashion bloggers, to spread the couture message. The front row seats at any showing are always reserved for the more serious players. “Watch the magazines, you’ll always see a line-up of celebrities sitting next to people like Vogue’s Anna Wintour, Hilary Alexander, of London’s Daily Telegraph’s and Suzy Menkes of the International Herald Tribune. But Ingrid says she was surprised to see many of the VIP crowd at L’Oreal’s Fashion Week, in Melbourne, dressed in the cool, classy but entirely safe ‘little black dress’. “It’s interesting to see these women, who are very much in the public eye, fashion writers or those known for being on the front line, taking the safe route,” says Ingrid. “If they play it safe, then you can excuse yourself for not always getting it right.” And just for your interest, here’s some of the winter hits Ingrid noticed at Fashion Week – suede lace-up ankle books, an absolute must, a layered look in necklaces and jewellery and pom poms that have a lot more uses than just decorating hats or berets. “It doesn’t matter what we have to say about it, fashion is part of the enjoyment of life and it’s here to stay,” says Ingrid. “My best advice is to embrace it, love it, find your way round it and go with the fashion flow.”v

here’s a distinct scent of marine in the air. It’s on the breeze and in the wind. And if you follow your nose, it will take you straight to Sanctuary Cove and the 22nd International Boat Show. Every May, the waters around these parts teem with boating diehards, who come to see, feel, smell, touch, test, try out, and often buy their way to boating pleasure. The prestigious four-day show, running from May 20-23, attracts more than 40,000 visitors, and is the site for many of the top boating names to launch new models. A 2008 survey carried out by Griffith University showed that sales and orders from the boat show event topped $276 million – an impressive result in anyone’s book. The same survey revealed that the show’s overall impact amounted to more than $310 million, through the support of

sponsors, visitors and associated commercial interests. The boating industry, which has a large investment in the northern Gold Coast, through the numerous boat-building companies and marine suppliers which operate here, has been rocked by a series of economic waves in the last two years, particularly at its luxury end. But this year’s boat show is geared to restore some of that lost confidence, with indicators showing strong industry revival across the board. “It appears the marine sector is rebuilding itself from the gloom of the late 2008,’’ says Sanctuary Cove Boat Show general manger, Barry Jenkins. “And there’s an obvious underlying confidence surfacing within the industry.’’ This confidence is reflected in exhibitor bookings for the show with more than 370 in place and the figure expected to top 400 before the official opening, he adds.

AMONG THE HIGHLIGHTS • A special sea dock area with clear access to the Coomera River has been set aside this year in the marine sector. It will allow for boats to be tried out and tested on the water during show hours and is a first for an Australian boat show. The dock can accommodate berths up to 45ft and longer. • While the show has always attracted the super yachts and luxury cruisers, this year a prestige brokerage display will be introduced, allowing for the showcasing of vessels 15m plus, some valued at more than $1m. • Thom Dammrich, a leading light in the US marine industry, will be the guest speaker at the Gold Coast City Marina’s Australian Marine Industry Breakfast on Friday, May 21. Mr Dammrich will speak on ‘The Expected Recovery of the State of the Union’, at the breakfast, to be held at the Hyatt Regency, Sanctuary Cove, his subject focusing on recreational marine in America. • A number of new sail and engine boats will be launched at the show, among them those from local companies Riviera – the 56 Open Flybridge and 43 Open Flybridgeand Maritimo, with its 47 Sports Cabriolet and 470 Offshore Convertible sportsfisher.

year ago this month, Riviera was drowning in a sea of clichés. On May 9, the company’s management had announced that the 30-year-old boat building firm was in voluntary receivership, news that was met with a raft of one liners. Riviera found itself simultaneously in ‘dry dock and deep water, adrift and beached, stranded on the outgoing tide and swamped by the incoming’. The news of the company’s change of fortune had not been entirely unexpected. Signs of a softening market, especially in America for Riviera’s luxury boats, were becoming evident in the previous 12 months, and the belt tightening had already begun. In April, 2008, about 200 staff were laid off, with a further 137 to follow in the January – a significant cut in the 1200 strong workforce. According to company chairman John Anderson, these moves had become necessary to ‘protect the nucleus of the business in faltering economic times’. The company had endured significant losses, reportedly posting a $35 million shortfall in the 2008 financial year, and these cost cutting exercises might have just been enough to set operations back on an even keel had it not been for the arrival of the GFC, or global financial crisis. When it arrived, it hit hard, fast and without discretion or warning. Riviera had just begun consolidating the aftermath of its January cuts, when the company’s executives and banks met and the decision to enter into voluntary receivership was made. It was an outcome that not only impacted on the huge boating community focused on Coomera and the waterways of the northern Gold Coast, but also resonated strongly in the public’s perception. Riviera was blue chip solid, one of the Coast’s largest marine employers and a success story, that thrived on the myth of Aussie true grit and determination. The company had been set up in 1980, when serial shipwright, Bill Barry Cotter, moved his boat-building

operations from the suburbs of Sydney to a six-acre parcel of land at Labrador. In that first year, the newly established Riviera Marine employed just five staff, produced five boats predominantly for a local market and its production facility covered an area of just 12,000 sq feet. Two decades later, when it celebrated its 20th anniversary with a move of motors and masts to a bigger and better location at nearby Coomera, the company employed more than 1000 tradesmen, produced an average 325 boats a year, had dealer representatives in more than 30 countries and a production facility that covered 78,000 sq feet. However, what was even more impressive was that this dynamic homegrown Australian boat builder had set its sights on the highly competitive American and European boating markets, taken on the big guns in the industry, and come out a winner. The Americans in particular took on Riviera’s combination of luxury and toughness in the design and performance of its fleet, as their own. The company was buoyant and looking to further expansion, profits were steady and reliable and plans were afoot to launch a new motor yacht – in boating vernacular, Riviera appeared to be unsinkable. But there was a iceberg of financial ferocity lurking below, and it was heading the company’s way. “It was what financiers called the perfect storm,’’ says Stephen Milne, Riviera’s corporate spokesman, referring to the 2009 crisis. ‘‘We had been seeing our sales, particularly in the American and European markets gradually softening,’’ says Milne. “A factory like Riviera is geared to building a particular number of boats each year, and we’d noted orders dropping off. “So, we had already started taking corrective measures to meet the situation by cutting back staffing and costs wherever possible.’’ However, despite the prudence and hard call decision making, the worse was yet to come. cont page16

‘’It seemed as if almost overnight people just stopped buying,’’ says Milne. ‘’They weren’t buying cars, they weren’t buying houses and they weren’t buying boats. “Orders were being cancelled, dealers weren’t able to take up boats and owners weren’t able to complete deals. “When the American banks started to close down and finance was withdrawn, the situation became unsustainable. “Everyone was left in a holding pattern, not knowing what was going to happen next.” Milne says Riviera was left with no choice but ‘to take immediate and drastic action’. That action, affected in May last year, saw the firm of Deloitte appointed as receivers and PPB as administrators, and a severe program of cost cutting and reorganisation implemented. “At that stage, the market had no confidence in the future,’’ says Milne. “We had to cuts costs in every aspect of the business. “We’d already made staff cuts, but it wasn’t just our employees who were affected. There were company cars and trucks that were sold off. We looked at every possible expense and trimmed it back to basic essentials, but at the same time, realised we couldn’t compromise on the quality of our product. That was our best asset.” A tight plan of action was put in place and Riviera faced the daunting task of working out how it could shift hundreds of its luxury boats – some still under construction in their factory workrooms and others in dealerships around the world – in a market that had lost its vital pulse. Not only that, but just 12 days after the receivership announcement, the brand was scheduled to front up for the 2009 Sanctuary Cove Boat Show – one of the most prestigious boating events in the country, in which Riviera had played a starring role almost from its inception.

“We certainly had to put on a brave face for that show,’’ says Milne. “We were committed to attending and it was important, but we weren’t sure how we would be received at the time.” As it turned out, the response proved, in one sense, to be the beginning of a remarkable turnaround for the company – despite coming so close on the back of financial calamity. “For one thing, sales at that boat show were very gratifying,’’ says Milne. “We sold 11 boats – seven of them

being Riviera’s new 5800 sports yacht, which was launched at the show, and four other boats, netting us total sales of about $17 million.’’ While Milne admits the figure was way down on previous years, where Riviera had set record sales of $35 million plus, he says the market itself was in overall ‘shutdown mode’. “There were less sales overall,’’ he says.

“But what that show indicated to us was that people were still willing to back the strong reputation of the brand – and that it was more than possible for us to claw our way back to a market dominant position.’’ He says what was even more amazing was the support Riviera received at the show. “We had people walking up to us, both Riviera owners and non owners, offering us goodwill and support. Urging us to hang in and not give up. Asking us what they could do to help. “It was heartwarming to say the least, especially at that time.” Once the show was done and dusted, an aggressive marketing campaign got underway. The first step was to finish the half-built boats in the factory and then address stock standing stagnant in dealerships around the world – which accounted for almost a third of Riviera’s production at the time. “We didn’t have an obligation as such to help out these dealers,’’ says Milne. “But it was in our interests, both as a show of loyalty and support to back them to move existing boats, and also to help them hold onto their businesses so they could in turn continue to sell our boats,’’ he adds. To do this, the company funded stands at international boat shows, helped transport stock to the shows and used all means at hand to expose the Riviera fleet to as many potential buyers as possible – and it paid off. “It’s taken us basically a year to clear the pipeline of stock around the world,’’ says Milne. “And in that time, we’ve sold more than 100 boats, from existing and new stock, equating to about two boats a week. “That’s a remarkable effort and leaves us in the position of having our lowest floor stock in three years – which is a great position to be in. It means we can

now launch strongly into new sales,’’ says Milne. But the best outcome of the sales sweep was the announcement a few weeks ago that Riviera had, in the short space of less than a year, worked its way out of administration, and had finalised its obligations to its non-secured creditors. Deals were made guaranteeing all entitlements – super, annual leave, redundancy payments – to Riviera’s former and current employees, and an agreement struck with the company’s unsecured creditors, such as contractors, to accept a dividend payment. These moves effectively took the administrator out of the picture, and paved the way for the banks to look at removing the company from receivership. There had been rumours former owner Bill Barry Cotter, who had sold Riviera in 2002 to private equity concerns for a reported $180 million, was now looking to buy back the farm. But Milne says at this stage Riviera is not for sale. He says the company’s banks had considered purchase offers from local and international interests, but after deciding none met the necessary criteria, had withdrawn the property from the market. “The sales process is closed, the banks are willing to continue their investment and Riviera now has boats to build and sell,’’ says Milne. “It’s been the commitment of

our customers, and Riviera’s reputation for quality and product that has kept us alive,’’ he says. “Those are invaluable assets to have – and the banks recognise that.” He loudly and proudly, with obvious bias, proclaims both Riviera’s products, and the tradespeople working behind the scenes as ‘first class’. “It may sound a little clichéd, but Riviera is a family, and like many others, we’ve had our family troubles,’’ he says. “But our staff care for the product they produce. Much of the work on these boats is still done by hand. You can’t get the smooth finish and gloss on the woodwork that you’ll see on our boats with a machine. It’s layers and layers of craftsmanship, and it’s like that in many areas of our production.” The Riviera fleet itself consists of four main series – the flybridge, sport’s yacht, offshore express and the motor yacht – ranging in size from 36ft-85ft, across 20 models. The next move for the company is to investigate plans to build a new motor yacht off shore in Taiwan, using Riviera design and expertise. “It’s a way off yet. In the meantime, we are getting back to the business we know best, building boats.’’ It’s been a year on choppy seas, and it seems even more cliché ridden comparisons, but according to its team, Riviera is heading back into smooth waters.v

THE LOVE OF GEORGE’S

G

eorge Covino doesn’t mince his words when laying out reasons for eating at his favourite restaurant – George’s Steak and Seafood at Broadbeach. The issue is clear cut. He by-passes the Italian ambience, so popular with customers, and the playful nature of the waiters – and heads straight for the food. “Just ask yourself. What is it that’s going to make you get in your car, head down the highway to Broadbeach, come in, sit down and order – it’s the food,’’ says George. “And we’ve got a reputation you simply can’t beat for the freshness and quality of our seafood and steak.” When he starts running through the menu, you can overlook the fact George is talking about the restaurant that he in fact owns, operates and that was named after him. It’s irrelevant. All that matters is the menu. First off, some fresh seafood choices – live local mudcrabs, live Tasmanian lobster, fresh black mussels from Victoria, scallops from Hervey Bay.

Then, how about ricotta and spinach ravioli with sandcrab, in a lobster and bug medallion sauce. Or a fillet of fresh, local snapper filled with Danish fetta cheese, a sundried tomato crust, served on spinach with buerre blanche sauce. Or macadamia crusted king prawns sautéd with dijon mustard and honey, in a King Island cream sauce. Okay George that’s enough. No more.

What now...a 490gm piece of marinated Angus beef rib eye on the bone, done Steak Pavaroti style, filled with Morton Bay bugs and king prawns grilled and served with a bérnaise sauce. If you’re still sitting here reading and not already on your way for lunch or dinner, it might be obvious that George has a ‘thing’ for food. He started in the restaurant business at 15 while still at school, working with brother Tony perfecting pizza making at Romanos, Nobby’s Beach – one the Coast’s longest running eateries. Tony and George later bought the restaurant, then added Valentinos, George’s Steak and Seafood, Unos and most recently Thai Thai to their menu – the latter all in the Broadbeach area and forming the basis for one big happy family known as La Familia. “La Familia is a grouping of restaurants, all delivering the same standards of service and quality food,’’ says George. “We’ve set it up like a good eating guide on the internet – you can trust these restaurants to live up to your expectations, and will add others to the website, provided these same standards are met.” And now, time to stop reading. Skip the story and try the real thing for yourself. v

Combine the ricotta and sultanas in a small bowl, then spoon into the pear hollows. Drizzle with honey and sprinkle with cinnamon. Bake for 30 minutes until pears are tender. I broke a bone in my hand three months ago. It was immobilised for six weeks and is all healed however my hand, to my surprise, is still stiff, sore and in some movements, inflexible. A: This is quite a common reaction following the break of any area, although many people don’t realise it. They think that once a break is healed, everything will go back to normal. But the problem is when you sustain a fracture, whether it be a crack or a complete break, the area needs to be immobilised so everything can heal. In that process, some joints around the injury can also become restricted – as is particularly the case with the hand, which has a lot of small joints to contend with. This effect on the surrounding joints can leave your hand, or other parts of the body, with on-going stiffness, restricted movement and other mobility issues. To offset this effect, there are specific exercises you can do when the hand, or any other joint is immobilised. But the real work needs to start once the healing is complete and confirmed. This is where physiotherapy comes into its own. A professional therapist has the

know-how to get the joints and tendons back on track in the shortest amount of time, and to show you what exercises work best to do just that. They can also provide you with an effective home exercise program. Whenever you injure yourself in this way, it is really important to follow up with physio treatment to make sure everything does end up back in working order. It may seem like it’s not all that important, but if you don’t attend to the follow-up, you can easily end up ongoing restrictions and difficulties. Some exercises specifically for the hand are: 1) Squeeze a stress ball constantly. Start with the whole hand, then squeeze each finger. 2) Touch your thumb and tip of your index finger, then slide the thumb down the finger to the palm – repeat with each finger, 3) Put palms together in prayer position and slide the elbows apart still keeping the palms together. Remember the old saying: ‘If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.” v Information provided by By Philippa Gilbert, PhysioMax, Hope Island. Q

When is the best time to sell a house? Should I sell now, or wait until the market improves. A: That’s the big question everyone who sells a house wants to know. And as far as finding a feasible answer, you may as well take to the crystal ball, because its a bit of an unknown. From watching the market shifts over the years and with the experience that brings, you can make a call as to what you think might happen. But it’s never guaranteed. A lot of other factors also come into play. For instance, your reasons for wanting to sell now. Do you want to sell so you can buy another home, do you want to sell because you have other commitments or do you simply want to sell because of a need to cash up? Each circumstance and reason is different. If you are thinking of selling now, with plans to buy another property, then

waiting for the market to give you a better price might be a reasonable option. But the flow-on from that is that the price of the property you are seeking to buy will also probably also have increased in a better market. If you want to sell because you have other commitments, then it will be those pressures that are more likely to determine your choice, rather than the market. But if you are under no pressure to sell, and the signs are strong that the market will improve, then maybe you can wait for improvement – although even with those signs, it may not always eventuate. However, if you plan to buy and sell in the same market, it should be a straightforward deal and you shouldn’t

have to compromise on the exchange. Whatever option you take, a professional real estate agent can help give you the best exposure, particularly if affiliated to a larger national organisation. This allows your property to be promoted both to the local market and the hundreds of other potential buyers available through the network of national offices. v Information provided by LJ Hooker, Hope Island. Q

I have heard that interval training is the best way to burn calories. Is this true and if so, why? A: This is a question I get asked all the time and there are stacks of research papers proving that interval training is far superior to steady-state cardio exercises, like long duration jogging or bicycle riding, for fat loss. There is also research that proves interval training is a better choice for heart health and lean muscle development. One study, published more than 15 years ago, showed that a group doing interval training lost nine times the amount of subcutaneous fat than the steady state group, who were involved in long and continuous cardio exercise at a moderate pace. As you can see with this study example, interval training is a better option if weight loss is your goal. Also, there is a lot of research now that proves that increased levels of cortisol, produced during steady state cardio workouts, actually increases fat around the abdominals.

As we should all be well aware, a waistline measurement of more than 94cm for men and 80cm for women puts you at an increased risk of developing chronic disease , such as cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. But to get the most out of your fat loss routine, I am a big advocate of adding resistance training to your exercise program. A research paper detailing findings of how fast we burn calories, which was printed in a leading physiology journal in 2002, showed that the metabolic rate of those participating stayed at an elevated rate for 38 hours after their exercise session, which involved very basic weight training. I have had countless clients lose up to 10kgs in only six weeks by combining resistance training with high intensity interval training. To get the best results with any exercise, you need to make sure that your training program suits your needs and your current fitness level. v

“Everyone should have their spine checked at some point even if you have no pain at all.” All those seemingly innocuous falls and sports injuries, hours at a desk all add up causing permanent decay and damage to the spine before we ever even feel it. It doesn’t make sense to wait until it’s painful anyway. Get the whole family checked for spinal and postural misalignment. You may be surprised and glad you did. We treat back pain, neck pain, headaches, poor posture, sciatica and whiplash. Treatment may also assist in many other conditions that the nervous system controls.

Take advantage of our offer and come and have a thorough spinal exam and x-rays on site, if required, for only $30, normally valued at $220. Call Diane now and make a time to be checked. Places are limited – only 20 available over the next 2 week period. Now is as good a time as any – Dr Ben Levi.

get it feature Can somebody just tell me which is the best fund to use for my superannuation, because I have four different super accounts and I am getting very confused about the whole thing? A: This question comes up so often, and we would love to be able to give you the ‘holy grail’ answer. Unfortunately, like life, superannuation is complicated. And, just like choosing a ‘partner’ in your personal life, a feature of one particular super fund may be just what you need, making that one right for you, but not right for someone else. One thing that is commonly used to compare super funds is the administration and funds management costs. This is important, because the cost can add up to a lot of money over time. But because superannuation is also a very effective way to hold your personal life insurance, the cost of the life insurance and the policy terms and conditions are also important considerations. It is often the case that low cost funds have a very high comparative cost of insurance. Likewise, the ability to invest with high quality fund managers is also

a consideration that should not be underestimated. For example, the low cost way to manage international shares is through index funds. The biggest index manager (low cost) has lost 3.90 per cent per annum over the last 10 years, whereas the top active fund manager (read – more costly) has returned 9.04 per cent per annum after fees. So, don’t make cost your sole selection criteria. With regard to the number of funds you have, can we say that unlike choosing a partner, sometimes it is okay to have more than one. Particularly if one has some features that you need, and another has different features that are also important. But two is about the practical limit, and we definitely wouldn’t recommend three or four. So if you have that many, you had better make an appointment with a financial planner. They can help you look beyond the glossy reports and find the one that is right for you. v Information provided by Quill Group. HE magic of Tamborine Mountain wraps itself around you in a country style welcome. It’s not the kind of magic that fairies are known to deliver – although some might tell you there’s a bit of that in the air as well. It’s more the type that comes from the creativity of the arts and crafts that runs strongly through this mountain community. The natural rainforest environment, unspoiled lifestyle of Tamborine and the more relaxed pace of life have attracted a diversity of professions to the area, including artists of all persuasions – the potters, painters, mask makers, landscape designers, gardeners, cooking talents, healers and helpers. They weave together their talents to add to the charm and surprise that Tamborine has become known for. So let’s take a brief look at some of the action on mountain.

The art of glass

SWEET AS HONEY

Karen Roussos takes glass and turns it into pieces of wonderful art. Sounds easy when you say it like that. But the production process is almost a work of art in itself. It can take 15 hours to fire the pieces and another five of painstaking detail to etch in the edgy designs. Karen learnt the craft from her parents, who were both glass artists, and the pieces she makes are from a type of glass known as dichroic, used by the American space agency NASA in its satellites. Dichroic glass is unusual in that it contains multiple micro layers of metal oxide, that allows it to take on the colours of the wearer. “It can change from pink to orange to blue to whatever dominant colour it picks up,’’ says Karen. Together with business partner Jenny Chong, Karen creates a stunning range of jewellery, as well as exquisitely fashioned vases and a range of decorative animal ornaments. The pair work from the recently opened shop Chameleon Glass Art, in Gallery Walk, Mount Tamborine and operate seven days a week from 9am to 5pm

Colleen Hagarty works in the Honey House, Mount Tamborine, making a line of skin care with the help of her bees. Colleen has been a professional beekeeper for years, even taking a university course in the subject, and was happy collecting honey from the hives, until her sister Jan came to lend a hand. “We were mucking around and ended up covered in honey,”’ says Colleen, ‘‘ and after washing it off, we both noticed how incredibly soft our skin was.” From that simple observation and a few deliberations, Colleen’s Hags Honey Skin care range was born, an abbreviation of her surname. She studied cosmetic chemistry, learnt how to combine the ingredients to reduce the ‘sticky’ factor and added some high-powered natural boosters, like the essence of Vitamin C stacked kakadu plum. “The end result was a powerful natural skin care cream that is full of potent regenerative and nourishing elements.” The range includes packages for mums and babies, specially formulated for newborn skin, and antiaging creams that work ‘miracles’ on dehydrated wrinkle prone skin.

WALKING SKY HIGH It’s not quite in the clouds, but it’s certainly a place where the sky meets the trees and you find yourself surrounded by the lush beauty of the Australian rainforest. The Tamborine Mountain Rainforest Sky Walk has been open a little more than 12 months, but has become, not surprisingly, one of the most popular and spectacular attractions in the area. The 1.3 kilometre walk is a combination of ground and sky paths, looping around in a figure eight and taking about 45 minutes to complete. Starting at the Eco Centre, you are first familiarised with the route and able to inspect the aquarium, the butterfly exhibits and the insect displays on show. From there, it’s a direct step onto the first leg of sky walk, a 300m long platform, 30 metres above the ground and suited to wheelchair access. It finishes with a path leading back to the rainforest floor, a local creek and the viewing deck. The second structure, the Cantilever, 40 metres long and 30 metres at its highest point, offers a panoramic sweep of the forested valley - then back to earth for the final leg of the walk. Recognised as Australia’s largest privately owned skywalk, not a single tree was lost in the building and a program of preservation and land conservation is actively pursued. The site is also home to the rare Richmond Birdwing butterfly.

BRIDAL ATTRACTIONS

Once upon a time, a bride went up Mount Tamborine to get married. After her came another, then another and still another... and before you knew it, there were so many brides lining up to be wed, that the mountain was awash with white tulle. Suellen Bayly is part of the Wedding Gallery, a service that provides information and support to prospective brides and grooms free of charge. She’s not quite a wedding planner, more like a wedding liaison officer. “We had so many brides wanting to get married on the mountain, that all the businesses in the area decided to work together to make it easier for couples,’’ says Suellen. “So you simply call into the Wedding Gallery in Gallery Walk, and check out all the facilities you might need – florists, venues, reception centres, photographers, cake makers and beauty clinics. “And not just one, but a selection.” Appointments can be made and arrangements discussed in the comfort of the Gallery office.

Taking your back B

en Levi was an almost certain bet to take up a career in medicine. The genetic influences were strong and ever-present. His grandfather Rudi was one of the Coast’s longest serving GPs, having arrived and set up practice here in the 1930s. His father Tom was also a doctor and his mother a physiotherapist. Even the family home in Scarborough Street, Southport, wore a surgical shingle on its front door for several decades. But for Ben, the call never came from that direction. “At one stage, because I was heavily involved in sports, I vaguely considered going into that area of medicine or physiotherapy, ‘’ he says. “But apart from some studies in human movement, I never made an outright decision.’’ That came some time later after Ben, a keen rugby union player, injured his shoulder during a game – an affliction that left him in constant pain, and with restricted movement in his arm and neck. “It was just a straightforward sports injury, but it was totally disabling,’’ says Ben. “I couldn’t play rugby, I had trouble moving, in fact I couldn’t do much at all without causing myself pain and discomfort.” He’s efforts to cure the problem with mainstream treatments met with limited success. Then a friend suggested seeing a chiropractor. “To be honest, I didn’t have a lot of faith in it at the time. But I was getting desperate.” However, after only a few treatments, Ben’s body freed up and he was back in action and pain free. At the time, he thought the treatment somewhat of a ‘miracle’. “Now I understand the process myself, it makes so much sense that it would work.” His personal experience took Ben straight to chiropractic school, starting his degree in Brisbane and completing it in Sydney, as well as gaining a Masters in Chiropractic at NSW’s Macquarie University. With the addition of a further degree in

nutritional medicine, he set up Chiropractic Central, now operating in Hope Island, with an emphasis on natural, supportive and progressive treatments – and a gentle approach. In Ben’s world, the spine rules, and he’s keen to give people a full understanding of just how powerful a role it plays in our health. “Most people don’t give a second thought to their back or spine until they are in pain – which is often when I’m most likely to see them,’’ he says. “Maybe its because they can’t see it, so it’s an easy case of out of sight, out of mind. But he says the spine is the main circuit board for the body, a central exchange that carrying the nerve reactions between the brain and our individual organs. “On that basis alone, it has plenty to say about your well-being,’’ he says. He says what people dismiss simply as poor posture can often be a reaction to ‘stress’ patterns taking hold in the body. “We move to adjust to them. These are patterns that can impair or block the smooth flow of nervous energy, and in the spine are referred to as sublaxations. “So when chiropractors talk about adjusting sublaxations, what they are attempting to do is break these patterns and return things to a healthier state.” He says problems relating to the spine and body muscular are not simply confined to pain, stiffness or soreness. The sublaxations can relate to emotional or mental affects, and be associated with difficulties in concentrating, memory lass, lethargy or depression. “In fact, in some ways your spinal health is a bit like a fountain of youth, ‘‘ says Ben. “When you body is working at its optimum, no matter what you age, and stress is reduced, you’ll have a far more youthful outlook. “If the nervous system is working as it should, if the organs are being nourished and supported and the whole system is fluid, then you’re in a far healthier state. You feel better, you work better, you live better. ’’ Ben runs sessions at Chiropractic Central

Most people don’t give a second thought to their back or spine until they are in pain – which is often when I’m most likely to see them.

ESCAPE! DINING PACKAGE

to show in simple terms how you can work your spine and back health into your general fitness and well-being. He says the dreaded ‘dowager’s hump’ that occurs, sometimes even in younger women, in one situation that can be addressed, in most cases with proper attention of body structure. “Women think it’s inevitable or that it comes with age. But in fact, many times it can be traced to poor posture, and can be improved or even corrected with the right treatment.” He says everyone, even children and babies although it surprise people, can benefit from , knowing their structure and body is in balance and is supportive of their daily needs. “Paying attention to your spine, your back and posture and all that goes with it, is no different to going to a dentist or the doctor for a check-up,’’ says Ben. “Our approach may be different, but the concern for prevention of problems is the same. We can, with some very simple and gentle procedures, tell you exactly the state your spine is in, the general health of your back and associated nerve pathways. “Then at least you’ll know what’s happening – and have the choice to take any necessary action to stop the situation deteriorating and ending up in bigger problem.’’ Ben is currently offering anyone the chance to have their spine and posture checked and analysed, with the back-up of spinal x-rays done on site for accurate assessment and detailed report and health profile of your overall spinal health, for just $30. “It’s our offer to you,’’ says Ben. “It can help you get a better picture of the state of your spine, and how it’s doing. “If it’s necessary for you to follow-up with any treatment, then that’s fine, but there is absolutely no obligation. That’s a choice. “We just want you to have a healthy back.”
