Hope Island November 2009

from the editor T

here are two things I’m not overly fond of. The first is having my photo taken. I wasn’t fond of it when I was four and my mother stuck an oversized bow on my oversized head, and sat me next to my baby brother for a shot to send to nana. I was no less fond 15 years later, when in a two-week career as a supermodel, I filled in for a friend in a pizza hut advert – at least that one involved free food. Secondly, I’m not overly fond of the people who make you have your photo taken. Oh yes. There is always someone who makes you. It’s usually your mum, but lined up right behind are your teacher, licence issuers, the passport controllers, employers. This week, it was our group national director of everything, who you’ll note continues to remain both nameless and photoless. Our intimate ‘no name’ brand of boss. Of course, we could have reasonably refused his offer. No threats to livelihoods were made. No suggestions to remove our deluxe coffee machine if we didn’t go along. No, nothing that straight forward. Far stickier tactics. More a case of the ‘for country, small dogs, rainbows and mittens’ type persuasion. ‘People like to know who you are, they like to see who is doing the talking. Do it for the magazine.’ So we did. A homage to privacy lost. I had a fleeting moment of concern that I would no longer be able to shop at BiLo on Saturday morning without being recognised. Everyone has their price of fame. But now that we’ve all been pictorially outed, I needn’t have worried. Not one little bit. While you can be assured no botox was used in the making of these shots, there certainly was an unhealthy amount of straightening, backcombing, lash curling, lip lining, front fixing and the trade secrets of a very good photographer. As a result, I could very well be standing right up close to you in the newsagency next week, my Sydney Morning rubbing pages with your Australian, and you’d never even know it was me. Marc and Karin deVos

His designs are beautiful, provocative, classical...but Marc deVos would rather let his work, not his words tell the jewellery story

All that glitters T

he first piece of jewellery Marc deVos ever made never quite found its way to the display case. It was a silver dress ring, set with cubic zirconions and garnets. Simple, unpretentious and as far as his mother, MarieRose, was concerned, much too personal to be left to the whim of the market. “She claimed it as her own before I had time to put it on show,’’ says Marc, laughing. This impulsive show of parental pride is something that goes to the beating heart of the jewellery trade. It’s a business that is highly emotional and one whose value is so much more than the sum of its precious parts. “Jewellery is about those moments in time that matter so much to people,’’ Marc explains. “It’s the ring you buy for someone when you fall in love, or the bracelet that marks the christening of your baby. “The reasons people want to own and wear jewellery, has a lot to do with the emotional attachments it carries.’’ Marc’s own attachments went on show for the first time earlier this year when he opened his gallery, deVos Jewellery, in Hope Island, which he runs with wife Karin. Previously, he mostly worked behind the scenes, redesigning and remodelling pieces for other jewellers, while creating his own designs in his spare time. Karin became his unintentional showpiece.

Hope Island November 2009

“I didn’t just fall in love with Marc. I also fell in love with his work,’’ says Karin. “And every time I would wear a pendant, a ring, or a bracelet, it seemed other people liked it too. “ By the time he opened his shop in February this year, Marc already had a loyal ‘underground’ following. And even at a cursory glance of the pieces on show, it’s not hard to see why. His work is beautiful, eclectic, and exquisite defined by its difference, and to use a cliché of business, ‘it’s that point of difference’ that matters. “I try to make the kind of jewellery that you won’t find anywhere else,” says Marc. “I’m often using an element of sculpture in the design, and the more eccentric, the better.’’ Inspiration comes from many directions, including the shapes and textures found in architecture, antique heirlooms and ideas that tend to surface in the early hours. “I’ll be in bed dreaming or lying there half awake and an idea for a piece will take shape, so clearly,’’ explains Marc. When it does, he reaches across to the notebook that has taken up residence by his bedside, and records the details. The resulting designs deliver an intriguing juxtaposition of opposites – the practicality of cool sterling silver paired with warm gold, the intricate weaves of patterns edged by simple, plain

bands. One collection reflecting the pure aesthetic of tradition, another playing provocatively with sexuality. It’s a contrast not unlike the designer himself, at one both private artist and public craftsman. The new Bordello range is creating a not unexpected interest, with its sensuous, saucy depictions of life in the raw. “It’s a little naughty, but still quite sophisticated in design,’’ says Marc. The line includes black leather wrist cuffs with sterling silver links; leather held silver and gold pendants and what Marc has dubbed the tourmaline twins, a sexy double act in a ring that was one of his dreamtime creations. It features the naked twins adorning the 18-carat gold ring in a setting of diamonds, and the theme is carried on in other pieces. For all the shine of his new venture, Marc would prefer to let his work, rather than his words, do the talking. He is far more comfortable sitting behind his desk, his tools of trade at hand. In fact, it was this image of the jeweller in creation mode, glasses on head and cardigan over his shoulders that first caught the eye of his wife Karin. “He looked very cute”, says Karin, who at the time was working in a duty free store, in Surfer’s, in between completing a degree in linguistics. “Our store looked directly into Marc’s family antique shop, and I would often see him there, head down working away,” says Karin. Eleven years later, two children, Nadya 9 and Quinn 10, and a successful business, the work bench is still one of his favourite retreats While living with a jewellery designer has its benefits, the three most important pieces Karin owns are sourced close to home. “Obviously, one is the engagement ring Marc made and designed, the others were gifts from my children. “My daughter, who has inherited a lot of Marc’s talent, sketched a design and had her father make it into a pendant for me,’’ says Karin. “Then, later she volunteered that she was inspired by the lid of a jam jar on the breakfast table,’’ she laughs. “The other is a silver ring that my son Quinn, again with his father’s help, designed and actually made for me himself.’’ As for Marc, while there are many pieces that hold importance, there is one that stands out for all the right reasons. It’s a ring studded with white and black diamonds shaped in the head of a fox. “deVos means fox in Dutch. It’s our family name,” explains Marc. And so it is. One a master of cunning, the other a pursuant of creativity.v

T wasn’t the foot in her mouth, but the one that allegedly stepped over the base line that sent tennis star Serena Williams into a tirade at the recent US Open tennis tournament. Williams was behind her game and losing to opponent Kim Clijsters, when she let loose on the line judge, who called her foot to fault. Insults were hurled, threats involving balls and throats were made, and an alleged promise to shorten life uttered. The world champion was rapped across the knuckles for her efforts, fined $10,000 in spare change and left alone to play another day. Call us cynical, but was it pure coincidence that just weeks after the outburst, Williams was in full publicity mode, hawking her autobiography On the Line to every media outlet in the business. The incident certainly revived the ghosts of tennis tantrums past. Memories of those hot-headed days in the ’70s and ’80s when racquets were thrown, umpires berated and ball boys ran for cover from the likes of John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors and Ille ‘nasty’ Nastase. Officially, everyone tut-tutted and labelled the behaviour ‘not quite tennis’. But for onlookers, the drama added a voyeuristic dimension that was secretly denied but overtly devoured. ‘There certainly was a time when players did tend to lose their cool,” says tennis coach and professional player, Chris Steel, who runs Hope Island’s Pat Cash Academy. “But when play at this level and under such pressure, then throw in the individual’s temperament, it’s not suprising that there is a reaction.” Chris says these unsociable ways and days have mostly belonged to the men of the game, with women much less volatile, their

He says there is some argument for saying that men’s tennis is far more exciting to watch as a spectator sport than women’s. “It has to do with the power of the game and the strength behind the hit,” he says, “even though it may not be politically correct to suggest so.” But while men may rule the professional circuit, the social side of tennis has long been all about women. Through the 1950s and ‘60s, Australian women owned centre court. The desperate housewives of the nation would, each week on a regular basis, slip into their jaunty, short white skirts, add some frilly knickers, schoolgirl white socks, then head to the nearest court, babies and toddlers in tow. They would play game, set and match, morning or afternoon, while the children amused themselves on the sidelines. “It was something everyone did back then,” says June Hewat, of the Gold Coast, who would plant her own two young babies courtside, while she went for the volley. “We would keep an eye on each others kids, and for us, that weekly outing was a major social event. continued over the page

“We’d catch up with friends and as much gossip as we could fit in, and apart from that, it was virtually the only real form of exercise we were likely to undertake,’’ says June, now in her 70s. “But we were all very flexible and toned.” The trend held on to the early ‘70s, until aerobics queen Jane Fonda, and singer Olivia Newton John added a leotard and headband to the dress code and urged everyone to ‘get physical’. Tennis became passé and people started pounding the city pavements en masse, jogging their way to health. “I think when more women started working fulltime, instead of staying home with their families, as we did, they just didn’t have time for tennis anymore,” says June. But there’s some good news back at the net. Tennis has returned to favour. It’s the new white, the alternative yoga, and the sporting way to go. “There isn’t a better all-round way of keeping in shape than tennis,” says Chris, a qualified coach. “It’s got everything going for it, and when people get into the game, they enjoy it at every level.” He says instead of turning up at a gym and going through the same repetitive routines, you move constantly on a court in the process of play. “For starters, tennis puts every muscle in your body through its paces. “It shapes your upper arms, which a lot of women are keen to keep toned. “It obviously gives you a great leg workout, strengthens your shoulders, stomach

muscles, even your posture. “And while all this is going on, you don’t have that pronounced notion that you are ‘doing’ exercise. “You are getting a work out while playing a game. “The other side of the equation is that, although it may just be a social match you’re engaged in, you’ll be pushing and challenging yourself, even if only a little.” The Pat Cash Academy operates at two levels, one side catering for the best of international students, the would-be Wimbledons, who arrive here in the hope of honing skills that will take them to the top. “Australia has always held a reputation for its tennis skills., “So these students come here from all over the country and overseas, to train intensively, billeting with local families or other players, and putting all their focus on improving their game,’’ says Chris. But the other thread of the academy provides professional coaching for local junior and adult players, and adds the fun with a large serve of social tennis. “The evening and weekend social matches are very popular,” says Chris. “A lot of women will come in, have a lesson, play a game or two, then have a coffee and catch up with friends. “We’ll keep an eye on the kids and set them up with some DVD entertainment while the mums play. “You’ve got sport, exercise, fun and social. It’s a great mix.’ The ball’s in your court.v

s a cricketer, geoff Merrill makes a great winemaker. rumour has it that, in another world, he might have had a shot at the australian test team – but that’s why they are called rumours. Merrill admits in his younger day, the captaincy of his local cricket team had more to do with his being a good administrator than a player. even his team nickname douglas J, was reference to the much-loathed douglas Jardine, who captained england against australia in the controversial bodyline series. cricket’s loss turned out to be winemaking’s gain. Merrill, who this year celebrates 40 years in the industry, went on to found geoff Merrill Wines, which produces superb wines from south australia’s prestigious Mclaren Vale and coonawarra regions. Merrill, who recently shared some of his best, at a dinner hosted at the hope island golf club, is now 56 and in normal times would be looking towards a wellearned retirement. instead, he is competing on a world market grappling with the financial meltdown, global warming and carbon trading, as well as fierce competition from new World rivals who are not handicapped by an aussie dollar as robust as a Mclaren Vale red. and which of these poses the biggest danger to australian winemaking? Well none actually. if all goes according to plan, expanding sales in areas other than britain should help fend off problems with the dollar, australia’s proven ingenuity and inventiveness will see off the challenge of carbon trading and, if need be, climate change. “i’m still not convinced climate change is happening; the records for Mclaren Vale and coonawarra don’t go back far enough,’’ says Merrill.

“Besides, we pick the grapes when they are ripe, and if that means 14.5 per cent alcohol or 12.5 per cent, then that’s what we make.’’ Merrill reckons the biggest problem facing Australian winemaking is the industry itself. He blames the major companies of short-termism, selling young wines lacking character, instead of concentrating on producing those which would make the wines from Australia’s regional areas as famous as, say, the Spanish Rioja or Italian Chianti. “Instead, every couple of years, you get a new board of directors who market wine like you’d market toothpaste.’’ Merrill insists wine should be given time to mature, develop character and complexity, as the various components of fruit, acidity and tannin come together in harmony. He compares the process with cricket. Test matches develop over five days, with surprises, glorious successes and failures, each developing an individual character. “No one remembers the one-day games. Nobody will remember Australia beat England 6-1 in the onedayers, but nobody will forget we lost the Ashes.’’ However, the cash cow oneday and 20/20 games aren’t all that bad. They ensure the survival of Test cricket. Similarly, Merrill is happy to sell bucketloads of rosé to the Poms to safeguard the likes of his lovingly crafted, reserve wines, so they can be released with some ageing, like the best Spanish and Italian wines. Ironically, for a dyed-inthe-wool Aussie, one of his successful business partnerships is with two Poms who became legends during the 1981 Ashes cricket match at Headingly, Leeds. Australia was cruising to victory when England’s Ian Botham smashed an unbeaten 149 in the second innings. “Funny thing that. No one

remembers fast bowler Bob Willis taking a match-winning eight for 43. Cricket’s always about batsmen.’’ Eight years ago, Merrill went into partnership with Willis and the now knighted Sir Ian and launched the top end BMW wine label, a venture which is still putting runs on the board. Perhaps it works because cricketers, like winemakers, tend to be characters. “I suppose you have to be if you’re standing out in the field together for hours,’’ says Merrill. He recalls hosting England stars including Willis, Geoff Miller and Derek Underwood while England was playing at Adelaide Oval. The England manager, Sir Alec Bedser, was notoriously fond of recounting how he once bowled Sir Donald Bradman for a duck at the Adelaide Oval during the 1947-48 series. The group was supposed to leave at 3.30pm, but Willis teed Merrill up to ask Bedser about the feat, just as lunch was winding up. Bedser was only too happy to oblige. He did so again when introduced to a fan, one of the winery’s employees, who had witnessed the event first hand. Bedser recalled it yet again when ceremoniously presented with a wine dating back to 1948. By the time the party left at 5.30pm, the actual cricket was well and truly over for the day. Merrill also remembers South Australian winemaking legend Peter Lehman entertaining well-known South African wine identity Ronnie Melck. He asked Melck to give him his shoe, which Lehman with due ceremony, filled with wine and invited guests to drink from it then pass it around, according to the old South African custom. When it finally arrived at Melck, he politely declined, given the old custom hadn’t existed until Lehman made it up. v

My once beautiful Cycads have been devastated by some sort of grub that has chewed the leaves into an unsightly mess. A new flush of leaves is about to unfurl and I am worried about these too being attacked. What can I do to protect them?

A: the cycad beetle appeared for the first time just a few years back and has been a persistent problem across the coast ever since. these black, grub-like beetles fly in enmasse and can devour the new fronds of the cycas revoluta, commonly known as the cycad literally overnight. there is also a caterpillar which is laid by a little blue butterfly that can be seen hanging around cycas thouarsii, the native cycad. this caterpillar can eat out the centre of the cycad and damage the plant beyond repair. at eco garden care, we combine a low toxic systemic product which is absorbed through the plant sap system, and a contact (instant action)

product seasonally on all our clients cycads and other plants susceptible to pests. We then revisit the garden six weeks later and apply a neem-based product, combined with eco-oil, to ensure thorough protection from all pests, including scale, for a three month period. unfortunately, many of our once hardy plants are being attacked by all sorts of pests these days. i believe it’s because many people do not realise that the toxic pesticides they are using in the garden kill not only the pest insects, but all the beneficial insects and bugs including lady beetles, praying mantis and beneficial mites. these feed on, and keep, unwanted pests under control. as we literally kill off all these beneficial predators, we leave ourselves susceptible to more increased populations of pests. there are many safe eco friendly products on the market shelves today and i encourage everyone, including professional gardeners, to use them and work towards creating a safe, sustainable environment for our families, pets and beneficial insects to live in and enjoy.v Information provided by Grotec. My husband and I have around $300,000 in a few super funds and have heard about Self Managed Superannuation Funds, but wonder whether super is worthwhile when you hear about how much it has gone down in the last two years? A: If you listened to the media, you may be excused for thinking superannuation is an asset or investment class all of its own. Truth is, superannuation is a structure, not an investment. And not just any old structure. It enjoys the lowest tax rate of any entity structure in Australia, and thanks to Simple Super regime, people over 60 can access their benefits tax free. And even without going into details of tax savings, the superannuation system is definitely a good place to invest. The benefits of SMSF can be broken up into four key areas: greater control; investment choice; costs and tax efficiency. Control of the underlying investments seems to top the list for most people. SMSF allow you to own almost any investment asset that you might otherwise hold directly, except it also gives you major tax and asset protection advantages. However, tax office figures show that 14 per cent of SMSF’s established over the last five years have been closed. So clearly, a SMSF is not suitable for everyone

and people need to be aware of both the risks and benefits. Disadvantages include administration, responsibility and cost, and it is generally considered that a balance of less than $200,000 is not cost-effective. Penalties apply to trustees who are found guilty of mismanaging an SMSF, so in setting up a fund, it is imperative to seek professional advice and understand the operating rules and regulations involved. Recent changes to the rules that apply to borrowing within superannuation has led to a sharp increase in inquiries regarding the possibility of members buying real estate, such as their business premises, within a SMSF. In the right circumstances, this can be a very worthwhile strategy, however, extreme care needs to be taken to ensure the right structures are set up and the SMSF trust deed allows for this. With joint super assets of $300,000, a self-managed super fund could be a very good option for you. Make sure that you get the right advice from financial planners or accountants, who will listen and take into account your preferences and needs.v Information provided by Quill Group. I made a will a few years back but now my kids have grown up and I’m in a second marriage. My second husband also has a son who can’t handle money. I guess I need a new will, but how would it work? A: You have a few issues to deal with here and they are typical of modern blended marriages. Most importantly, you should sign a new will urgently. Because you have remarried since making your old will, it is now invalid. That means on your death someone would be appointed to administer your estate and it would be divided up under strict statutory rules. When you make a new will, some of the things you will need to decide are: a] h ow much of your estate will be left to your husband if he survives you; b] what happens if your husband dies before you; c] w hether your children should receive part of your estate immediately on your death, or only after your husband dies; d] w hat provisions you should make for your husband’s son; e] w hether any of the children, are or might be, in difficult financial or matrimonial circumstances. At Ffrench Commercial Lawyers, we spend a lot of time with our clients working out the right formula for flexible estate distribution. While you can’t rule from the grave, there are ways you can provide for difficult or unforeseen circumstances after you are gone. One of the most popular is using Testamentary Will Trusts. These allow trusted family members and/or professional advisers to make decisions after your death, in line with your wishes. So, if one of the children has financial or marital problems, for instance, the trustees could act to ensure that your assets won’t go to his or her creditors. So make sure you see a lawyer experienced in this area urgently.v Information provided by Ffrench Commercial Lawyers. Hair CareQ&A with KONC hairdressing

Q

Can you please give me some tips on how to treat my naturally curly hair in this summer humidity? A: As if our busy life styles weren’t stressful enough, we have to worry about what kind of hair day we’re going have today. For those who are blessed with curls that are smooth and manageable, we envy you, but for the rest of us mere mortals, humid summer weather can spell disaster for our dry and unruly curl. But don’t worry. Here are a few easy tips to help tame the frizz. Recognising what kind of curl you have is the first step. Is your hair naturally curly and dry, or is it also dry due to being over chemically treated? For naturally dry hair, moisture is the key. So in some cases (unless you are trying to wear your hair straight), humidity can actually help the hair

retain moisture. Finding a product to hydrate and smooth the cuticle of the hair will be your best friend. But for those who have chemically dry hair, on top of their already naturally dry hair, you will need to hydrate as well as repair. Weekly treatments at home, or in a salon are going to help replenish and repair the damage, resulting in a more defined and manageable curl. If all else fails, a cute up-do, whether it be a braid or messy bun, can see you live to battle another curly day.v Information provided Konc hairdressing. with SANCTUARY COVE REC CLUB

Q

How do I get rid of my flabby arms?

A: Unfortunately there is no such thing as spot reduction, so basically you need to combine great eating habits and exercise to make a change. Weight training is one of the best ways to increase muscle tone in the body and for the upper body, exercises like pushups and tricep dips are fantastic for this part of the arm.

Q

My posture isn’t very good I seem to hunch a little…how can I improve this? A: Posture is very important and combining stretching and strength exercises will work wonders. Strengthening your core muscles by doing classes such as pilates and yoga is a great way to start, as they increase your mobility and help stretch the areas of the body that are tight. Imbalances between tight and weak muscles are usually what contribute to poor posture. An easy tip is stretch your chest muscles every day and imagine you are lifting your head higher to an imaginary ceiling, this will lift and elongate the spine and keep your posture fantastic.

Q

Will skipping meals make me lose weight?

A: All you are achieving by skipping meals is slowing down your metabolism, which does not help with weight loss. Think of your body as a car, you couldn’t run your car on just any fuel, you wouldn’t get very far. It’s the same with your body. You need to fuel your body with nutritious food to keep it running at its best and keep your metabolism up. Your metabolism is important, as it is like a furnace working to burn off all those calories. Ideally you should be aiming for five meals per day, leaving no more than three hours between eating.v Information provided by Sanctuary Cove Rec Club. Countdown ABBA

ast member Matt Hadgraft is happy to be taking on the role of Benny Andersson in the show Abba Live, Unlike his acting, dancing, singing co-stars, he doesn’t have to ‘slip into something lycra’ for the performance. “Benny was always a little more overweight than the others,’’ says Matt. “So, even though lycra was an Abba costume favourite, he was exempt from having to wear it... a decision for which I’m eternally thankful.” Matt, his friends Lynelle Leighton, who features as blonde Agnetha Falkstog, Jamie McIntyre, who plays Bjorn Ulvaeus and Jacqueline Ozorio, who is Anni-Frid Lyngstad or Frida, are also ‘thankful for the music ‘ that is Abba. For the past six years, the AbbaLive show has been bringing the magic of the Swedish ‘supertrouper’ group to audiences throughout Queensland and NSW. The original idea came from Lynelle, who studied classical piano at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and devised the show’s format. Lynelle and Matt are the original members of the show, which has proven an outstanding success wherever it has performed. “It’s such a treat doing Abba,’’ says Matt. “This is a group which has the affection of the world. Everyone knows the songs, the words, the dance moves, and especially the music. As soon as they hear Dancing Queen, Fernando or Mamma Mia, people are up dancing regardless of age, gender or musical tastes.’’ He says while the Abba songs seems simple to most people, as a musician and pianist, he is amazed by their complexity. “They can appear quite straightforward. But then you go to play them and find they are very complicated... and therein lies the genius of songwriters, Benny and Bjorn.’’ Like the members of Abba itself, all four Abba Live performers are talented musicians, who set out to deliver a show true to the original as possible. According to Matt, every dance move, every inflection, every detail of the costumes, the lighting, the routine, is reproduced to give the best of Abba. “Lynelle painstakingly replicated every detail on the costumes. She spent hours sewing the hundreds of sequins onto Agnetha’s fabulous white jumpsuit,”says Matt. AbbaLive will sing in the New Year at the Gold Coast Arts Centre, on December 31, starting at 7.30pm, in a spectacular show that includes a three-course dinner.
