ERE’S our new look Get it. Like it? We do. It’s just like cleaning out your closet in time for spring. We’ve given the mag a freshen up with some good style tips, a few up-to-the-minute accessories (new columns) and added in some key staples… captivating reads that, just like getting your hands on a new wardrobe staple, are sure to be stuck in your head for days. This month, we look into a bunch of issues that affect not just Gold Coasters but Aussies in general – and some are just as confronting as they informing. Like why so many families are fleeing their homes in South Africa, a nation with one of the world’s highest murder rates, for a safer and more stable life on the Gold Coast. We sit down for a chai latte and quiet D&M with the facebook, ipod and techno-obsessed Gen-Yers to find out what they think of themselves (and how the other generations perceive them... irritating, erratic and self-absorbed maybe?). We find out how a busy and focused mum overcame illness with a healthy attitude and spiritual awareness and uncover the Gold Coast’s own seedy underbelly. Oh and there’s some fluff too, as we welcome onboard new columnists Beer Goggles (what’s it like up there in manland, big fella?) and From the Lip (she said what…?). Love him or hate him, Beer Goggles is something entirely different to the columns you’ll read anywhere else, this lad has a sharp tongue that’s got less tact than a bull in a china shop and his female counterpart Ms From the Lip leaves no fashion faux pas untouched. Talking of opinions, next month we’re hosting another Get it Great Long Lunch. The last one was such a hit, it’s hard to find ways to top it but we’ve smoked our stilettos and done it. With media doyenne and social commentator Mia Freeman as our host, it’ll be a hum-dinger so be sure and get your hands on some tix before they’re all gone. September’s a great month because it’s the start of spring – my fave of all the seasons. I can leave behind those drab and cold winter days that make you feel blah and swap them for longer, sunnier arvo’s with a cold vodka and a good book for company. Oh and filling my closet tonnes of soft muted colour palettes, plus the key must-have for this season (jumpsuit if you didn’t know already) is the best part before summer’s bright bikini weather (and a lot more visits to my yoga mat) beckons. Spring’s always celebrated by the fashion world as a new beginning. And that’s what we’re celebrating with our (almost) first birthday issue at Get it… a new beginning!

T

he Gold Coast Arts Centre is jam-packed with entertainment this month. Join Brisbane’s most celebrated advocates of contemporary cabaret t for this award-winning showcase of the songs of Tom Waits. Starring Pearly Black, Greg Bird, Sandro Colarelli and Alison St Ledger, the tones have been described as an illusionary indulgence of twisted, postmodern cabaret and rag-and-bone blues. This bar-room balladeer calls his songs travelogues – journeys into dingy diners and smoky gin joints seething with seedy characters and outsiders with tall tales and heartaches. Directed by Lewis Jones with music direction by Phil Macleod, Tom Waits For No Man is tender, unruly and full of wry humour.

hy should I advertise my property? Marketing your property for the best sale outcome for your property Investing in a thorough marketing campaign is the key to a successful sale. The marketing strategy generally plays an important role in getting the best outcome for sellers and achieving a good sale price. The more buyers who see your property advertised usually translates to the more bids or offers on the table. Then, once you decide to sell a property, sellers are exposed to a variety of different marketing strategies and budgets that can include signboards, internet advertising and display and classified advertisements in a variety of newspapers that may be distributed locally, state-wide or nationally. A good marketing campaign is likely to have both a newspaper and internet component. Many buyers use newspapers as the first step in their property

search, followed by the internet where they can find more information and photos on the property. Today’s buyers are using a number of different mediums to search for property including newspapers and the internet. Unfortunately many agents today don’t understand the obligation they have in showing sellers all the marketing opportunities available so that a seller can choose the most comprehensive marketing strategy. Good agents will work with the seller to understand what the seller is trying to achieve and provide them with a tailored marketing strategy that draws in buyers, creating some healthy competition. Ultimately marketing will increase the chances of a sale by maximising the exposure of the property to its widest and most targeted audience. Sellers should consider the effectiveness of both local and state-wide newspaper advertising, as well as the internet and signboards.

Want to makeover your home? Then take a few style tips from the people who make it their job to design good rooms.

I

T’S a trend that’s definitely catching on. People selling their houses and wanting to show them at their best, are calling in the designers to lend a hand. “It’s not just a matter of throwing money around to buy fancy furniture or decorator items,’’ says designer Denise Hayes. “It’s more about creating the spaces and that sense of flow in a home that in turn creates an image and a particular feeling – and adds so much more appeal.'' Denise says it is possible to implement that on a budget which is both suited to the owner’s individual needs and often using decorative elements that are already at hand. For Denise, who runs her own design company Rapid Revamp, the starting point is often a simple case of de-cluttering. “Sometimes, there is so much stuff going on that your eye and your perception are completely thrown off. You can have what appears to be a lavishly decorated room, but the balance is all wrong. You can’t even really tell if the design works because there are so many stories competing against each other,” she says. While a lot of people would love the advice and help of an interior designer in creating style in their home, they often consider it an ‘unaffordable’ luxury. September 2010

“But in fact, style doesn’t have to be expensive to look effective. From a professional viewpoint, it's just a matter of applying simple principles to a room or space to bring it to life. And of course, it’s a life that’s fitted to the person living there,’’ she explains. Denise says many people find it hard to create their own look in a home. “It’s why makeover shows on television are so popular – they take the ordinary, and with a few twists and turns of the trade, transform it into the extraordinary. And for Denise, the extraordinary is the very stuff of her business. “It really does come down to the eye and skill of the designer and in how a certain look is brought together – the textures, the colours, the blend or the contrast.’’ Denise is able to carry out a consultation, advise on colour, arrangements, lighting and feature pieces, which you can then implement yourself, or see the whole process through for you from beginning to end, co-ordinating all the work. “Whatever you need doing, simply call me and talk about it. There are always options and costs to suit – and a style for every taste.” Contact Denise on 0414 862 929.

It’s sporty, sexy and packed with safety features. Sharon Kells tests out the Volvo C70 cabriolet.

motoring

L

ast month, I did a little car swap for the weekend. Out went my slightly defective Mazda 121, with its manual gears and shonky boot that lets in the water when it rains and in came a sleek new silver shiny C70 Volvo Convertible. Not a leak in sight and a boot that whistled while it worked. Heaven on four big, fat wheels. It was one of those invitations to ‘test drive’ a new model that car companies issue every now and again – but which are mostly handed over to motoring males. It’s always the blokes who get to spin the wheels of these shiny new models. They’re just so eager to fall over themselves with talk about overhead cam shafts and fuelinjected thingies. As if half of them would really know what to do with it anyway! Well, in my test drive world, you can forget all that stuff. All you need to know about the new Volvo C70 is the following; it looks beautiful, it smells divine and it’s simply glorious to the touch. And shall we talk about extras? Okay, go on then. For starters, there’s the black mesh insert that slots behind the front seats to deflect the wind, so your hair doesn’t blow every which way when the top’s down. Now, that’s a godsend. Then, there are the mirrors, folding in automatically on both sides when you convert to sedan mode, so no trouble bumping bits when you park. And then there’s the auto dimming that comes with the rear view mirror and takes the nasty glare out of headlights come nighttime. You’ve also got wipers for your headlights – yep, for the headlights – and the most stylish, silver control panel, which floats down the middle of the front dash.

And all this is before I even get started on the three-tiered hardtop roof that goes up and down at the flick of a button – just like the Batmobile. Can’t tell you how many times I put that into play at the traffic lights and shopping centre. Moments as such are rare and valued, but I’d appreciate it if you didn’t mention it to the guys at Sunshine Ford who lent me the car. They may not see the curious side of things. Of course, you can’t talk about a Volvo without mentioning safety. It’s safe as the proverbial house. But even so, I was a little nervous being given control of this car, all to myself. Not fear for me, fear for the car with me in it! But once I got out on the road and exhaled, the Volvo drove itself, requiring very little input from me except hands on the wheel and looking frontwards. It wrapped it’s sleek streamlined silver body around mine and we were one. I adore this car. And over the weekend, I managed to visit everyone I’ve ever known in the past 10 years, intimately or vaguely, just to show it off. I even considered heading for the hills of Possum Creek, near Byron, to my friend’s property, where the C70 and I could lay low for a few months, change the plates, file the engine number and assume a new identity. But it all became too dramatic for words. On Monday morning, I drove it back into the showroom, put my own keys back in my own reality and drove off in my the 121 with the leaky boot. But if I win the lottery... PS: If you really do want to know about cam shafts and injecty thingamabobs, check it out on the internet or ring the guys at Sunshine Ford. They just love all that stuff.

Packed with plenty of safety features, the Volvo C70 is as stylish as it is sturdy.

I

She’s got more venom in her bite than a taipan snake. Get it’s new columnist has her say on all things chic, chick and slick.

’M NO costume designer but if you had to design a national outfit for Australia would it include a sheepie worn as a shrug, highheeled ugg boots and a cutaway skimpy swimsuit? Hmm… perhaps not. That is unless of course, the outfit you were creating was for the opening of the Tamworth boot-scooting nationals – the fluffy ankle bits might save your heels from bruising or something. It’s not an easy task and one I sure won’t put my hand up for when they’re on the lookout next year, but when Sydney designer Natasha Dwyer was given the arduous task of designing a frock for the biggest beauty pageant in the world, that’s what she came up with. Yes ladies, boots, a sheepie and a swimsuit. All worn at the same time. And for the very same contest that saw ‘our Aussie beauty’ Jen Hawkins take the first ever Aussie crown. Funnily enough, there weren’t a pair of uggs in sight. Hers was a grey strapless number with maps of Sydney on it. It’s a beauty pageant after all, not a sheep station. In what looks a little bit like the get-up a petulant toddler would throw together, the wooly number had everyone lamenting it was a bit of a joke. And we became the laughing stock. A little bit showgirl from the Ekka and a little bit Paris Hilton’s snowgear, Trinny and Susannah would’ve had a field day if they copped their fierce fashion eyes on it. Our entrant, GC model Jesinta Campbell was an Aussie stunner. The costume, sadly, was not. It was right up there with peep-toes and bobby socks – which I did actually see a PYT (pretty young thing) wearing with her micro mini dress just last week… ah, Gen-yers have all the fun! But there are just some things in this world that should never go together and uggs and heels is one of them. Which leads me to my next point that is those of us Gold Coasters with a penny’s more style than a meter maid, have been trying desperately to prove that we do in fact have class, fashion sense and credibility. Contrary to the belief of our southern counterparts’ perceptions, we actually don’t wear, well, ugg boots with heels on them and skimpy swimmers with wooly crop tops. www.getitmagazine.com.au

LIP

Now all the good work of the fashionista people of these here fair shores has been undone with one outfit. Thanks Ms Dwyer, you can stay on your side of the NSW border for now. I’ll give her that it is the job of the national costume to promote our great wide land’s heritage – and yes, the intricate hand-painted Aboriginal patterns and colours have done that beautifully. But I’m not entirely convinced fluffy boots with heels and a skimpy pair of swimmers portrays us in the best light. Not when you’ve got 30 other women wearing pretty frocks and national costumes like I dunno, kimonos saris and flamenco dresses or whatever it is they wear. If the judges were picking a winner based on her costume, we would’ve had more chance of winning lotto than taking out the crown. But lucky for this little national treasure, who said she thought the outfit was ‘incredible’ and the uggs were ‘a nice little finishing touch’, the pageant’s based on a whole lot more than what you wear for your country!

It’s the job of the national costume to promote our great wide land’s heritage

Last Night at Chateau Lauren Weisberger, author of The Devil Wears Prada, once again looks into the dark side of success in Last Night at Chateau Marmont. When Brooke’s husband, Julian, finally makes it big as a musician, the couple is ecstatic. But as their lives are catapulted into the spotlight of fame, the publicity hits, the constant travel starts and Brooke is left in the background all alone. But when the breaking point hits, and Julian is caught seducing another woman, Brooke is left to decipher the truth from the lies to decide what she really wants.

Halo

At Home with the Templetons Written by Australia’s top-selling female novelist, Monica McInerney, comes an entertaining and touching story about the perils and pleasures of love, friendship and family. At Home with the Templetons shows that other people are not always as perfect as they seem. When the English Templeton takes up residence in a stately home in rural Australia, they set the locals talking – and with good reason. From the outside, the seven Templetons seem so bohemian, unusual... peculiar even. Intrigued neighbours, single mother Nina Donovan and her young son Tom want to uncover their tale. Before long, the two families’ lives become entwined in unexpected ways, to the delight of Gracie, the sweetest of the Templeton children. In the years that follow, the relationships between the Templetons and the two Donovans twist and turn in unpredictable directions, until a tragedy tears them all apart. What will it take to bring them together again? September 2010

Born Wild is the passionate and adventurous tale of Tony Fitzjohn’s journey from London bad boy to African wildlife warrior. At the heart of the story is a series of love affairs with the world’s most beautiful and endangered creatures – affairs that so often end in pain, because to succeed in re-introducing a lion or leopard to the wild is to be deprived of their companionship. Tony tells the story of his 20 years spent in Kenya with George Adamson of Born Free fame – a time of discovery, isolation and frequent danger living far from civilisation. And when he was prevented from re-introducing any more animals into the wild and made unwelcome in the country he loved, Tony had to start anew in Tanzania. This inspiring book will take you on a true African wildlife adventure of epic proportions.

Alexandra Adornetto’s Halo is set in the quite town of Venus Cove, that when three mysterious teens enroll in the local high school, the once sleepy town is turned upside-down. Nobody knows the truth – that the three girls are angels on a mission to save a world on the brink of destruction. When Beth, the youngest, falls for her handsome school captain Xavier, she faces a frightening decision: will she defy the laws of Heaven by loving him? Things come to a head when the angels realise they’re not they only supernatural power in town. There’s a new kid in town and he’s charming, seductive and deadly. Worst of all, he’s after Beth. The angels and Xavier must use their powers to overcome darkness – but will Beth survive the battle?

Short Second Life of Bree Tanner Fans of The Twilight Saga will be enthralled by this riveting story of Bree Tanner, a character first introduced in Eclipse, and the darker side of the newborn vampire world she inhabits. In another irresistible combination of danger, mystery, and romance, Stephenie Meyer tells the devastating story of Bree and the newborn army as they prepare to close in on Bella Swan and the Cullens, following their encounter to its unforgettable conclusion.

EER GOGGLES

Get It introduces our new commentator on all things bloke-y… raise your hands up in the air y’all for Mr Beer Goggles.

Y

EAH uh, thanks... I think. Mate, I’m here to tell it like it is. I’m no professor of this or psychologist of that. I’m just a plain and simple bloke. A paid-up member of the Safety in Numbers Blokes Brigade and I’m up for being the one with the big loud voice… or keypad as the case may be it this instance. This month my fellow Get it blokes, I’m coming at you on a guy-to-guy level and I want you to listen real good. I’m no metro. I’m as straight up as a piston. I like my curries hot and my coronas sitting pretty in their stubby cooler… never mind that carb-free stuff, that’s for… well, I don’t need to tell you. The pause says enough. I like big TVs – in fact the bigger the better. Yeah, like one of those snazzy projection screens that come down from the ceiling, that’ll do. Never can be too big when the boys come round for the footie. My ultimate job would be what that guy Ray does on Hung…but without the expensive suit. I’m not convinced my girlfriend would be keen, but. For now, I’ll have to stick to what I’m doing

– which is writing. Stick your clichés up the proverbial, I’m clever at what I do and the good guy at the top seems to think so too. I don’t do too many D&M’s (that’s deep and meaningfuls to those outside of Gen-X) but there has been something itching at the back of my neck, so here’s the debrief. While I was surfing on topics to talk about in this here column, I came across a new survey on a blokes’ website that reckons 67% of us still believe in the institution of marriage. Who are they kidding? I’d like to know who in the blazes they surveyed because me (and a bunch of my mates) are way off those stats. Not one of them has closed in on the big ‘M’. I’ve got my eye on one prize and it’s a 1967 Shelby Mustang, it ain’t a rock the size of Tasmania going on anyone’s finger anytime soon. Got me pegged brutha, I’m keeping that stash for Shelby. It’s not that I don’t love my bird. She’s a top chick. Solid even. In the sense that she’s a good sound girl, not that she’s you know, actually solid and that. So there’s a bit of pressure there from her wanting to be Mrs Beer Goggles and maybe even a little bit of a sideways stare from her mum. But generally, I’ve got it good. She lives with me – my girlfriend, not her mother – but we’ve still got separate bank accounts. She lets me go out with the lads on weekends, and if I’m real lucky

17

will come pick me up from the pub at 4am when I pester her with enough drunken calls. Why would I want to ruin all that with a big old piece of paper that says I have to conform to this and I’ve got to do that. And here’s the contradiction – the same survey of the same group of blokes (from nah nah land) says 79% of guys reckon men get shafted in the divorce courts. Why get in that tight spot in the first place? It’s like performing a three-point turn with a faulty steering column… the effort far outweighs the result!

EE IT, HEAR IT

Looking for something to fill your ears, eyes and mind? Adele Rowlands-Dealey gets the downlow on the latest flicks, dramas and concerts coming your way.

Film: TOMORROW WHEN THE WAR BEGAN Tomorrow, When The War Began follows the journey of eight high school friends in a remote country town whose lives are suddenly and violently upended by a war that no one saw coming. Cut off from their families and their friends, these eight extraordinary teenagers must learn to escape, survive and fight back against hostile military forces. Basing the film around John Marsden’s popular novel, director Stewart Beetie says this is not a typical heroic war movie. “It’s not just action, action, action; it’s very character-centric,” he told reporters. “I’ve always thought one of the best things about the book was that it was very characterheavy. These eight characters are all very clearly defined and they all have there own journeys, and I love that. And I think it was just a matter of keeping true to that and letting the action happen around them.” Tomorrow, When The War Began opens September 2.

MUSIC: rIHanna Songstress Rihanna has broken records having spent more weeks at No. 1 on the ARIA singles chart than any other female artist in the past decade. Topping Mariah Carey, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga. And she’s on her way to Australia in February and March next year. The risqué Last Girl On Earth tour comes after the November 2009 release of her fourth record R Rated, which followed a turbulent year for the singer, who last toured Oz in 2008, with former partner Chris Brown. Critics warn the show – that features semi-nudity and war imagery – has strong themes of sex and violence but Rihanna denies her show is too sexy or violent. “That’s an ignorant view. There are messages in my show. But everything isn’t so literal… some people can’t understand poetry. Sometimes you have to look at the underlying message. It’s metaphorical. I can’t wait to come back and show everyone how much I’ve grown,” she says of her return to Australian shores. The tour kicks off in Brisbane on February 25.

TV: offspring Nina Proudman has a simple quest – to deal with her family, her ex-husband, the job of delivering babies, and the hunt for a decent love life. And keeping a handle on her tendency to overthink things and fantasise of a better life. From the producers of The Secret Life of Us, Tangle, Love My Way, and Rush, Offspring is a contemporary drama set in Melbourne’s Fitzroy. With a stellar Australian cast including Asher Keddie, Kat Stewart (Underbelly’s Roberta Williams), Don Hany, Deborah Mailman (The Secret Life of Us, Bran Nue Day) and John Waters. Join Nina Sunday nights at 8:30pm as she attempts to navigate the chaos of modern life. September 2010

Could the Gold Coast have it’s own society to rival the King’s Cross crime scene played out in the nation’s most popular TV series, Underbelly? Sharon Kells looks into our city’s own seedy nightlife to find out.

W

Gun-toting Jade Lacey

Easily-led young brother Dionne Lacey September 2010

HEN 26-year-old Jade Lacey stood in front of a crowded courtroom last year and declared it normal for Gold Coast teenagers to carry guns, a collective gasp swept through the court’s watching gallery. “I used to carry a gun on me all the time,” he’d told the court. “It’s just something I did. We thought it was tough.” The baby-faced and confident Lacey brother was living his own version of a gangster life – replicating that of an American gangster. Known as Jade ‘Lace Italiano’ Lacey, he led his younger brother into a world of total disregard for human life as anyone who got in the way of his plans, fatally discovered. The young criminal’s courtroom uttering might not have been all that audible, but it was, without a doubt, a chilling admission. The seeming indifference in Lacey’s delivery, as much as the statement itself leaving onlookers shocked. And while the Coast was certainly no innocent, his comments painted our laidback city as having an almost lawless society. Its reputation as a flashy party town with a penchant for strip shows, adult entertainment, nightclub bikini quests and questionable business dealings was part of an evolvement from its days as a favourite family holiday spot to a sophisticated and internationally renowned tourist mecca. But this was different. This was territory to rival popular crime television drama Underbelly. A replay of the sinister world that had fuelled Sydney’s notorious Kings Cross for years, and defined a decade-long wave of criminal activity in the seedy suburbs of Melbourne. Now the script was focused on the glitz and glamour of the Gold Coast and the life that was played out in the shadow of the multi-million dollar high rise run and would-be rap star Jade Lacey, with his younger brother Dionne, were shaping up as key players.

20

But these brothers ‘crim’ weren’t just a couple of ordinary back room boys who’d slipped off the rails, they were the progeny of wealth and privilege, the sons of milk millionaire Ken Lacey and his wife Madeleine and were about to face trial on a number of charges, including murder, unlawful wounding and later, drug dealing and torture. As their controversial case unraveled, it revealed a lifestyle of wanton indulgence and unrestrained gangster-like behaviour in which guns were a regular accessory like a belt buckle around their low-slung jeans and drug money was stored in designer Versace bags. It was a side of the Gold Coast that the business community would prefer to play down, fearing a backlash to the area’s vital tourist industry and associated services. The Lacey’s solicitor Chris Nyst, who also defended the infamous postcard bandit, Brendon Abbot and alleged hitman Christopher Dale Flannery, says the Coast has its share of shadowy characters and criminals, but counteracts there are ‘crooks everywhere’. “The Gold Coast is the sort of place where you can show up with two cents in your back pocket and become a millionaire,’’ he told media. “It’s one of those can-do type of places.’’ The Coast has certainly had its connections with high profile criminals, including convicted murderer Carl Williams, who would regularly escape Melbourne’s gangland tension for a getaway on the Coast, along with his wife Roberta and associates Benji Venamin and Tony Mokbel. In July this year, 19-year-old Daniel Jon Taylor, the ‘secret’ son of Kings Cross nightclub owner John Ibrahim, who was portrayed almost saintlike in the most recent Underbelly series, was discovered living incognito with his mother on the Gold Coast. The young budding entrepreneur www.getitmagazine.com.au

who has already carved out a career for himself in underage dance parties appeared at Southport court on assault charges involving an incident at a Surfers Paradise nightspot. The crime focus went state-wide when Queensland struggled through issues of widespread police and political corruption in the late 80s, and which, following revelations of the Fitzgerald inquiry, almost saw the jailing of its then premier, Joh Bjelke Peterson, on perjury charges. Other National Party ministers didn’t get off so lightly, with Don Lane, Brian Austin, Leisha Harvey and Geoff Muntz all ‘doing time’ for their crime. Deborah Locke, NSW former detective and whistleblower says the nature of the ‘boys club’ in the police force was largely swept under the carpet by officials that was to blame. When the state’s top police officer, Terry Lewis, spent more than 10 years in jail on corruption charges, the seedy and corrupt underside of the police force began to unravel. While paling in comparison to the Sydney and Melbourne underworlds, with young up-andcoming criminals like the Lacey brothers living in our city, their actions are paiting a seedy and tarnished image on the canvas of our gold-lined shores.

Is there a generation gap widening by the minute? Adele Rowalnds-Dealey looks into the difference between the baby boomers to the Gen-X, veterans and the fabulously self-appraising Gen-Y.

September 2010

T

hey’re hip, impetuous, smarttalking, and sometimes seem to suffer from an overdose of self-esteem. With a BlackBerry in one hand, half-strength cafe latte in the other and iPod-plugged earphones surgically attached to their ears, Generation Y are ambitious, demanding and apparently born to rule. For now at least. Aged in their teens and twenties, Gen Y are tipped to inspire great change across social, political and business terrains and are fast becoming the most influential generational group since their baby boomer parents. But it seems the older generations aren’t ready to hand over the reins just yet. Local father and business entrepreneur Kelvin Crowther says Gen Y’s simply don’t have enough life experience to back up their presumptuous drive to obtain power. “This generation hasn’t even hit 30. And although they may think they know everything, they don’t. They’re extremely materialistic and want to climb the dizzy heights of ‘careerdom’ and they want it now.” But Kelvin seems to be missing one crucial factor – Gen Y is different to any that came before them. They’ve grown up with mobile phones, the Internet, pay TV, bottled water, laptops and Eminem in a world of AIDS, terrorism and addictions to ice and stilnox. And they’ve become very socially aware. The first generation to have been in the sights of advertisers while still in the womb, they’re cynical of marketers because they have been exposed to TV and mass marketing since they were born. Technology has played an important part in empowering them. As toddlers, they learnt to flip TV channels via remote control and played with computer graphics in primary school. These days, just about anything can be found on the web and with about three-quarters of Gen Y’s regularly using the internet, there’s no wonder they’re the most educated-minded, technologyfluent, multi-tasking and adaptable group in history. Companies that tap the Generation Y market and draw down its best and brightest – just as the boomers begin to retire – are in for sweet economic times, say business experts. The only problem might be their impatience with the old ways. In the ‘80s, jobs were predictable. So were people. Work was structured around eight-hour days and 40-hour weeks with pay related to experience. Getting into the office early

23

and staying late was a sure-fire way to the corner office with a potted plant. In Melbourne recently, I was chatting with the marketing director of a big food company and she was moaning about the fact that after 5.30pm her office was empty. The reason for this is that her office is full (or rather it isn’t) of 20-something aged Generation Yers and, apparently, they have much better things to do. Similarly, I heard about a company that had hired a member of Gen Y as a receptionist. After two weeks, the director in charge received a text message that simply read, “I quit, L”. Ridiculous? Yes. But it’s still just as effective. It’s called Instant Digital Gratification (or IDG). These days, kids think email is snail mail and want to be chief executive of the company by 25 – all in no more than 35 hours a week, of course. What Gen Y lacks in experience, they believe they make up in enthusiasm. They will leave jobs quickly if the boss is nasty, the hours inflexible or the pay unsatisfactory. “An old man called me the guiding light to my generation,” laughed Jimmy Morris, 20. “I know I’m good at what I do. And with comments like that, I think I should be given a bit of slack.” Gen Y employees are good workers. They’re diligent and task-oriented but they are not concerned about time or place. Hence, if the work is done, why hang around? Famed for their ability to multi-task and collaborate within networks, this means they can do some things faster. “So, if you can do your work on a laptop at 11:45pm at home, what’s with the 5.30pm physical presence thing?” Jimmy asks. And this, whether you like it or not, is part of the future of work. Offices will become dropin centres and pay will be piecemeal. Individuals will not be paid for their time, but for what they produce. Contracts will become more flexible and telecommunicating will be an option for those who want it, so some people will become digital nomads. Technology will revolutionise work in other ways too. At simplyhired.com you can view job postings but you can also click to receive information about salaries in similar jobs and hyper-link to networking sites where you can find someone you know who already works for the company that you are interested in. Things like this may seem revolutionary but to Gen Y, it’s just how things are. Griffith University Lecturer and marketing September 2010

SOCIETY guru Peter Clarke says employers find Gen Yers intensely stimulating yet very frustrating. “Gen Y has grown up with rapid technological change and this makes them expect change and speed as a matter of course. To many people, they come across as having low attention spans and high expectations. If Gen Y’s are not happy, they will just look for another job.” Yet, according to Peter, Gen Y’s have the world in their hands. They fall into two distinct groups. They either want their work to “make a difference” or feel work “makes no difference” at all. Refreshingly, the quest for meaning and desire is not just some youthful, self-serving grandiose plan to save the world. This is cold, hard, goalsetting underscored by the logic that says, ‘If this is taking up five days in my week, it better be worth something’. Peter says many Gen Y’s are excitable, stimulated, technically savvy and very impatient. “They grew up in the world of the five-minute abs workout, two-minute noodles and one-minute managers. And they probably think they’re all too slow nowadays.” Gen Y’s are not shy about flaunting personal details about their lives on YouTube and MySpace. They create their own websites, make their own CDs and DVDs and are cynical of packaged messages. They are generally tolerant of multiculturalism and gay relationships, perhaps because of the positive depiction of sexual minorities in the pop culture of today. They’re not motivated by the same pressures that faced their parents. Four out of 10 Australian Gen Yers do not believe they will own a house, yet it doesn’t seem to worry them. They are great consumers, like to eat out and spend on luxury items like holidays, sound equipment and clothes. And because of this, Gen Y’s have consumer power, not just with their own disposable income but they wield significant influence over their baby boomer parents’ spending habits too. Having grown up in a media saturated, brand-conscious world, they respond differently to advertising. They are more likely to follow the advice of their peers than that of their parents or advertisers. But their desire to consume can cause trouble. It’s a common Gen Y desire to accumulate as much money as quickly as possible. They’re ambitious and optimistic but are also debtridden and anxious. Of the record 3.7 million new credit-card applications last year, almost a third were from those aged 18 to 27. And a third of people failing to pay their bills are also Gen Y’s, says Australia’s biggest consumer credit check company Veda Advantage. The data reveals a surprising number of children of baby boomers default on credit payments soon after signing contracts. And a Commonwealth Bank survey last year showed 73 per cent of Gen Y was in debt. They expect things to work out but there is no plan B, C or even D if they don’t. According to the World Health Organisation, depression will be the most significant condition in the year 2020. Do they know something we don’t? “It’s all rush, rush, rush and spend, spend, spend with the young ones these days,” says a member of the Veterans generation. “They have September 2010

zero attention spans and get bored easily. They also have less loyalty to organisations,” he says. But there’s more to it than that. Gen Y is erratic because they don’t want to get screwed over. If you’re old enough to remember your mum or dad being sacked or made redundant, you’ll do anything in your power to avoid the same fate. Corporations might be playing the tree-hugging loyalty card right now but it wasn’t too long ago that unwanted employees were thrown to the wind with no more than a backward glance. So what goes around blows around, right? The economy is changing. Talent is in great demand and in most industries, demand for Gen Y employees outstrips supply. So is Gen Y all they’re cracked up to be? Well, they’re just in the driving seat and behaving like anyone would if they were given a powerful new car and no driving lessons.

Gen Y has grown up with rapid technological change and this makes them expect change and speed as a matter of course.

Veterans generation says Gen Y are self-absorbed.

he became a Vogue covergirl at 14 and is the granddaughter of famed Queensland cabinet minister, Russ Hinze. But although she was raised as a country girl among the horses and chooks of rural Queensland, Kristy Hinze went on to become one of Australia’s most successful supermodels. The five-foot-nine beauty was a runway regular with her natural beauty, notching up magazine covers and signing on as brand ambassadors along the way. Now hosting Project Runway, Kristy has successfully navigated the often challenging path of transgressing from model to TV personality. And her personal life, not to be eclipsed in regard to fairy tale endings, has seen her recently married to US billionaire Jim Clark. The model truly is a modern day cinderella. Born in Sydney in 1980, Kristy’s family moved to Queensland when she was a young child. Coming from a family with political ties, her grandfather was the late Russ Hinze, an Australian state minister with a shady reputation and who our local dam is named after. But, dismissive of his scandalous past, she described the colourful politician as being, ‘just gramps, who dive-bombed into the pool with us’. Growing up on a farm in Beaudesert, the tomboy Kristy had a passion for horses and was a chasm from the glamazon she is now. Her introduction to modelling came when she enrolled in a modelling course at Gold Coast agency, Katz. Immediately singled out by the school’s owner, soon after she was on the books of one of Australia’s leading national agencies, Vivien’s. It was a matter of the right look and Kristy had all the elements of the archetypal Australian golden-haired girl-next-door. The young model soon made national headlines when at 14, she became the youngest model to appear on the cover of Australian

Vogue. At the time, she had no idea how big a deal landing the cover was and said the only reason she would go into a newsagent was to buy Horse & Hound. During the years that followed, the young model jetted around the world on modelling assignments and for a while, juggled high school and modelling, before quitting school at 17, to pursue her career full-time. At 20, Kristy left Australia and headed to New York. The address change proved to be a fairy godmother and she was soon chosen to appear in the prestigious 2000 swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated. In 2001, she wore a $6 million diamondencrusted Tigerlily bikini accesorised with a live python at Australia Fashion Week and the days down on the farm were now long behind her. With the world at her feet, Kristy was signed by one of the modelling world’s most coveted contract lingerie labels, Victoria’s Secret joining the ranks of fellow angels, Laetitia Casta, Eva Herzigova, Karolina Kurkova, Gisele Bündchen and Heidi Klum. But, like any fairytale, there is always a villain in the midst. At elite level modelling, there’s an ever-underlying pressure to confirm to minuscule measurements. While in Paris in 2003, strutting down the runway for fashion icon Jean Paul Gaultier, the model succumbed to pressure, her weight plummeting to 48 kilios. During that same time, Kristy was hospitalised in London and had to undergo surgery for blocked bowels. She soon realised the demands on her body had become too much and decided to make a move into television. In 2008, Kristy appeared on the front of Vogue once again – 14 years after her first cover. She landed the hotly-contested role hosting the Australian version of fashion reality show Project Runway, beating fellow celebrity models, Megan Gale, Elle McPherson and Miranda Kerr.

www.getitmagazine.com.au

To look at her today, she is the picture of health and beauty and at 29, is 12 kilos heavier than her Paris catwalk days... yet still in high demand. She is the face of Sportscraft and has collaboraed on designs including her own signature ‘Kristy Bag’, knitwear and even a golfing range – appropriate seeing as she’s a mad-keen golfer with a handicap of 23. As in many fairytales, the handsome prince soon sweeps the leading lady off her feet. In Kristy’s case, it was king of the Internet, Netscape creator and 63-year-old billionaire Jim Clark. The couple met through a mutual friend and although the 36-year age gap was initially an issue, it soon faded and the couple began planning their future. Their lavish beachside wedding followed in March, 2009, raising eyebrows and fuelling gossip magazines into a spin – especially surrounding the fact both Clark’s children were older than the Oscar de la Renta-clad bride – one by a decade. But the beaming bride was all smiles as she wed her handsome (if not somewhat greying) prince on a remote island, not letting the naysayers deter her. The young Queensland beauty is used to such attentions, after all. And even with an impressive modelling career and years spent years traveling the globe, she still has emotional ties to her homeland. Even if the supermodel is living her fairytale life, swapping the farm for a house on par with a castle with 19 bathrooms. Kristy Hinze’s former days in Beaudesert must seem like an alternate reality. Though for our heroine there is no fading into the sunset, Kristy’s home in Australia this month, to promote Canberra’s Floriade Festival as the event’s celebrity ambassador. Sounds just like a fairytale to me.

With a murder almost every minute, it’s more than warmer climes that bring scores of South Africans to our shores every year. We delve into the personal story behind a young family’s decision to flee a life of terror and torment.

T

HIS July marked five years since Natasha Markham received a fateful phone call that will forever be etched in her mind. And she’s not alone. Thousands of South African families are involved in home invasions, horrific murders and brutal assaults every year. But it was this final atrocity in a life full of constant fear that led to the 35-year-old, who runs an engineering company with her husband, to uproot their two young children and leave a homeland of heartache for good. In 2007, two years after her father, Arthur, 57, was mercilessly shot dead in his girlfrend’s driveway simply for the theft of his car, they left behind friends, careers and family for a life without fear and torment. Joining the thousands who are forced to leave the embattled nation which holds the second-highest murder rate per capita in the world, after Colombia, and where statistics show six people per 1000 are murdered every year. And that’s just the reported murders. Thousands more above that figure, go undocumented every year. The extent of violence and brutality in South Africa is so great that many are forced to flee for a life of relative safety and calm. Natasha grew up in Johannesburg – in a reasonably affluent suburb of the nation’s economic hub – but while it’s beauty, vast wealth and emotional ties were great, after the murder of her father, she felt fleeing her homeland was the only option. On a cool winter’s evening on Saturday, July 2, September 2010

2005, Arthur Harcus had pulled into the driveway of his girlfriend’s home and as he got out of his vehicle, two men ascended upon him with guns. On the other side of town, Natasha and her husband, Andrew, had just put their oneyear-old son to bed when the phone rang. She missed the call, but sensed something wasn’t right. When she retrieved the message, her head went numb. It was her father’s girlfriend telling her he’d been shot… words that would soon cement her decision to flee her homeland. It was the third time Arthur, a furniture manufacturer on the outskirts of the city, had been held up at gunpoint. The first was in 1992, when he went to get a coffee at the café across the road from his factory. As he walked in, he realised it was in the middle of an armed robbery. The offenders held a gun up to his temple and clicked the trigger but it jammed and the bullet never released. Instead, he was beaten with the butt of the gun before the attackers fled the scene. The next attack was in 1998. Arthur was delivering furniture, one of the businesses he owned with his daughter that employed over 25 local staff. He’d been paid in cash, so took his wallet out and as he came to his car, two men in suits got on either side of him, demanding he get in. Blindfolded, they drove him to a field where he was savagely beaten, stripped naked and hogtied. “After that attack, my father said he would always fight to the end…” Natasha says with a look of loss and solemnity. “I used to say to him, www.getitmagazine.com.au

‘Where’s that going to get you?’ We’d tell him that he’d have to do whatever they [attackers] tell him to do. But, you know, he was stubborn… there was no way he was going to allow anyone to violate his life like that again.” Andrew, who had long wanted to move away from the violence, had also been attacked in Johannesburg but he doesn’t speak much of it other than to say, “People don’t have any idea how dangerous it can be.” “But you know, nothing is worth your safety…” she says in a starkly matter-of-fact tone. “When we had our son, I thought ‘maybe this isn’t a safe place to raise kids. Sometimes they’ll hijack your car with your kids in it, so I’d carry scissors in case I needed to cut my baby out of his car seat in a hurry. You just try and protect your family but that’s just life over there… you really never know when something horrific will happen to you or your family.” The couple came to visit relatives on the Coast in 2005, to search for a new place to settle. “I remember being at the Brisbane airport when we had to fly home and not wanting to go (to Johannesburg). I was literally crying at the gate. It was hell for the next 18 months while all we could do was sit and wait for our visas to come through.” The day Arthur was murdered, he’d phoned his daughter and her family almost as if he had some

inkling of his fate later that evening. “He phoned that day and after me, he spoke to Andrew – which he rarely did on the phone – and then to Judd, who was just a baby then. It was almost like he knew something was going to happen. I was three months pregnant at the time and we were on the sofa watching TV. The phone was

You just try and protect your family but that’s just life over there… you really never know when something horrific will happen to you or your family

on the kitchen bench so I didn’t get it in time. The message was from my father’s girlfriend (her mother had passed away four years before) she said ‘Natasha, you need to come quick. Your father’s been shot.’” Without knowing exactly where he was, Natasha knew it was on the other side of town, about a 30-minute drive away. She quickly ran to the neighbours and asked them to look after her son while they drove across town to her father.

SOCIETY Natasha with her father, Arthur, on her wedding day.

People simply don’t realise the stress you constantly live under over there. We would never go back, never.

“I didn’t know where he’d been shot or how serious it was. I always thought, like I guess all daughters do, ‘my father’s never going to die’… I just never thought he would.” The couple arrived at the street to find police cars and an ambulance lining the driveway cordoned off with police tape. “A woman came rushing over to me and said she was a trauma counsellor. The paramedics were working on him as he lay in the driveway and they were saying, ‘Give her something to calm her down’ because I became hysterical but they wouldn’t let me get to him. I kept saying I wanted to see him.’” Paramedics gave Arthur a shot of adrenalin desperately trying to find a pulse and loaded him into the back of the ambulance, headed for the hospital. “I was talking to people on the phone, they wanted to find out how he was and I really didn’t think he was going to die,” she says. Once they arrived at the hospital, the couple were ushered into a room where a doctor came and told them there was nothing he could do, Arthur had been fatally wounded in the attack. “After we left the hospital, I remember saying to Andrew, ‘we just have to get out of here.’” While Arthur lay dying in the hospital, the hijackers who shot him and then took his car, crashed into a shopfront window. The driver died on impact and the other assailant lay injured. One of the paramedics on the scene, who had also attended Arthur’s shooting, asked the offender why he pulled the trigger. With little regard for the life he’d taken, he just spat in the officer’s face. Aged only 17 and 19, the killers were from a wealthy family in Soweto and heavily involved in crime. When the surviving assailant gave his statement to the court, he told the judge the white boss had fought with them and the other attacker had said shoot, so he did. He was given a 20-year sentence with a 15-year no-parole period. But murderers are often at large because of the scale of violence in the nation. The only reason Arthur’s murderers had been caught was simply the resulting accident. Natasha never went back to that driveway where her father lost his life and eighteen months September 2010

after his horrific massacre, she and her husband packed up their two young children and fled South Africa for the Gold Coast where they are happily living today, free of fear. “It doesn’t feel like home when we go back to South Africa. You know, I miss the people but I really don’t miss the place at all. I don’t think a lot of people realise the stress you constantly live under. We would never go back, never. “ Next month, Arthur would have celebrated his 63rd birthday. Possibly enjoying a cold beer and a boerewors cooked on the BBQ in the backyard of his daughter’s Hope Island home, with his two young grandchildren climbing over his shoulders. An occasion Natasha can only imagine among her memories…

Fashion swap joins Fashion fiesta promotion

A weekend of all things fashion at The Marine Village, Sanctuary Cove.

T

here’s now even more reason to make sure your diaries are free for the weekend of 25 and 26 September. Along with the already fantastic line up of fashion events locked in for the weekend, Sanctuary Cove has also confirmed that the team from Brisbane Clothing Exchange will be holding a Fashion Swap at 10am on the Sunday. Fashion Swaps are becoming extremely popular around the country giving fashionistas the opportunity to bring along any garments and accessories that were originally purchased for $30 or more and swap these on a 1-for-1 basis for others pre-loved treasures. Items can include clothes, shoes, belts, handbags, hats and jewellery sets. The Event organisers will only accept items that are likely to be valued by other fashionistas, and will not accept items that are dated, undesirable or have stains, smells and faults. Due to health reasons they also don’t accept intimate apparel or swimwear. For those ladies interested in clearing the cupboards and updating their wardrobes check-in starts at 10am. A maximum of 10 items of clothing can be checked in per person and ladies will receive one token for each item. Ladies will then be invited to stroll and enjoy The Marine Village shops and cafés before the Fashion Swap shopping etiquette briefing and official Fashion Swap begins at 12noon. Fashion Fiesta at Sanctuary Cove showcases all that is fashion in The Marine Village coupled with expert beauty tips from Mary Zavaglia from Women’s Day, styling tips from Susie the Stylist, fashion parades and workshops. Tickets to Fashion Fiesta are $50 with a special ‘Bring A Friend for Free’ offer or $10 per person to just attend the Fashion Swap. Those ladies choosing to make a weekend of it with the Hyatt Girls Weekend Spring Fiesta Package will also enjoy an early morning Zumba class by the lagoon pool and additional interactive make up workshop with Mary Zavaglia. The Marine Village at Sanctuary Cove is home to a number of unique fashion and specialty retailers and with spring/summer fashion arriving daily, there’s no better time to explore these beautiful boutiques. rom Elle Macpherson to Jennifer Hawkins and Miranda Kerr, the role call of international catwalk stardom has read like an Aussie high school yearbook, graced with countless faces of homegrown beauties. And now a new breed of young models is making waves in the industry both here in Australia and internationally, creating an increasing demand for our local talent. Burgeoning stars in there own right, these girls deliver something unexpected to the competitive modelling world, coupled with enviable lithe proportions, they all share one common trait… a natural sun-kissed beauty. While Sydney and Melbourne have been the founding ground for Kerr and Macpherson, our eastern state is proving we too have our own culture of young supermodels emerging from our shores. The Gold Coast has long been known for producing bikini babes and meter maids but the city has also become renowned for scouting our local talent pool to produce international runway stars. The most notable of them Sports Illustrated covergirl Kristy Hinze, Alyssa Barclay – Ford Supermodel of the World Winner and international model Krystal Ford and fellow international Queensland beauties Samantha Harris – the first Aboriginal supermodel, Brisbane girl Alyssa Sutherland as well as self-described ‘Bogun from Logan’ Catherine McNeil. The 180cm, 21-year-old glamazon won the Girlfriend model search at 14 and has featured in the pages of international fashion bibles Vogue, W and Numero and features on the list of the Top 50 Women Models of the world. Twenty-two-year-old Harris – like McNeil – was discovered during teen magazine Girlfriend’s model search and after becoming a finalist, the Danish Aboriginal beauty’s striking features were impossible to ignore. Whisked off to work the runways of London and Europe, she’s destined to become one of our most unique and stunning international successes having already featured in a fashion shoot in the March issue of Australian Vogue.
But leaving your hometown isn’t always easy and success in modelling at an elite level requires most to step away from their roots, journeying the globe, travelling through unique and often remote locations most would only glimpse through the camera lens. Is it the sun, the lifestyle or just good luck that has our city producing some of the nation’s most successful modelling talent? Model manager Johanna Barclay, of Queensland agency Vivien’s,

38

attributes the rise of Gold Coast models to the city’s healthy outdoor lifestyle and overall positive attitude. And, she’s quick to point out, we’re slowly beginning to claw away at the false sense of stereotype tagged onto the Gold Coast model pool. “I think some people would look at promo girls as stereotypical Gold Coast models. But we are a fashion model agency with classic beauties, sophisticated and beautiful long fashion bodies. I would hope people start seeing those girls as typical to the Gold Coast instead.”

In a city known for its glamorous lifestyle, with fast-paced car races, horse racing carnivals and Movieworld studios, the Gold Coast is beginning to hold great appeal for young girls trying to get their break in the industry. “Easily 60% of our models are from the Gold Coast. I think these girls want to have fun with fashion and modelling. Our models are well liked by interstate clients because of their friendliness, strong work ethic and happy demeanour. We supply our Sydney office with such gorgeous Queensland models that they can’t get enough,” she laughs. Or maybe it’s just a good gene pool. Whatever the reason behind our recent spike in runway success, it’s undeniable that the Gold Coast is producing a host of beauties to rival our metropolitan neighbours. Barclay believes it lies with their beauty, poise and ability to grasp a challenging expectation. “It’s that X factor that is hard to describe, it’s more of a feeling you get after you see something that is unique.” One of Vivien’s success stories is local Currumbin schoolgirl Samantha Cannon, who was discovered in the New Faces of the Ekka Model competition. The 18-year-old beauty managed to successful combine modelling with school until she finished year 12, and was then whisked off to the global stage in Asia. She’s now on a three-month contract in India. Avril Alexander was discovered at 14 and in her first job, featured in a television commercial for ‘Wet n Wild’. After finishing year 12, she flew to Europe, walking in Paris on a four-month contract. The young Coast beauty recently graced the catwalks for some of the most influential designers and will soon walk the runway for local swimwear label White Sands in Miami during their annual swim fashion week.
Whatever the recipe might be... sun, beaches and lifestyle or just a good-looking gene pool, Queensland and the Gold Coast are becoming breeding grounds for some of the most famous faces of our nation. www.getitmagazine.com.au

It’s a woman – and a mother’s – role to multi-task but as Ingrid Bonnor finds out, talent agent, yoga instructor, mum-of-two, dancer and triumphant survivor, Madonna Williams handles her daily juggling act with grace and stamina.

omen of today continue to strive to find the balance between having it all and leading a healthy, happy life. Navigating our way in and around our roles as professionals, mothers, wives and friends can almost have your head spinning right off your shoulders. So imagine adding to that mix, successful talent agent, yoga instructor and recently accredited Zumba instructor. Tired yet? This is the everyday world of Madonna Williams. An early life as an actress and presenter led Gold Coast businesswoman Madonna Williams to create Williams Talent Agency eight years ago. As the Director of Williams Talent Agency, Madonna’s dedication and hard work paid off. The agency went on to become one of the most successful talent agencies in Queensland, boasting strong relationships with not just Australian, but the

all-important international casting agencies. “I get so much satisfaction from helping others achieve their dreams. Williams Talent inspired me to produce events such as the Big Band Big Night & WT Luscious Lunches, which provided a platform to showcase our performers in addition to raising over $100,000 for various charities”. During her career as a talent agent, Madonna forged a reputation as one of the Gold Coast’s most vivacious, approachable and effervescent personalities and together with agency business partner, Gael Coccetti, propelled many young stars into Australians living rooms as actors on Neighbours, Home and Away, Sea Patrol and a list of international feature films. But it’s not just the joy of

seeing actors achieve their dreams that keeps her ambition for success thriving, Madonna recently made a lifestyle decision to expand her focus by teaching yoga and the popular fitness craze, Zumba. “I feel a great sense of achievement, teaching yoga for many years and more recently, starting Zumba classes. Yoga is about sharing peace, stillness, releasing tension, renewing the body and clearing the mind. Zumba is sharing fun, dance and natural ecstasy!” And it could be her training in the spiritual movement of yoga that has seen the agent keep a youthful and ageless air as well as helping her increase mental clarity, emotional stability, and a greater sense of overall wellbeing. “The practice of yoga helps to extend a person’s healthy, productive years far beyond the accepted norm and, at the same time, improve the quality of their lives”. Yoga as a life changing force is no better evidenced than within her own experience. Before Madonna’s two sons were born, the brave woman fought off two types of cancer, one that progressed to a level three. “I treasure being healthy because I’ve lost my health a few times and have held hands with people as they’ve died… that changes you forever. It’s a lonely and frightening journey to face illness and disability and I admire those who can stay positive and inspiring during difficult times of ill-health.” A passionate devotee of spiritual teacher

Deepak Chopra, Madonna believes that neither darkness nor fear can survive the light of true presence. “Once, a friend of mine told me her worst fear… and then four years later, it happened. So I choose not to go there. If I feel fear coming on, I just remember to breathe deeply and stay with my body or I turn to meditaation instead.” After what would seem like a lifetime in the entertainment industry where outwardly, appearance is all too often the focus, the brave and strong mother-of-two is quietly confident in her own skin. “I remember about 10 years ago, looking at photos of me on a summer holiday when I was 16 and thinking, ‘my god! Why didn’t I appreciate my looks back then?’ So now I try to appreciate everything about me – including my faults. My husband likes my legs. I thank the thousands of yoga postures for giving me a firm tummy and my mother for giving me her smile.” Many could take a leaf out of Maddona’s book – especially to be happy when you’re living in the moment and appreciating what and who you have in your life. And the wonder woman offers us some worldly advice of her own, to find an inner balance in our lives which can see us through and be a partner to us in both good times and bad. A mantra that has seen her find both an inner balance in her life and emerge unscathed through triumph and tragedy. Both, she says, are key to leading a balanced, happy and healthy life.

YORK A NEW YORK

What entices so many to New York? The lifestyle of SJP maybe? Ingrid Bonnor asks Gold Coasters from three generations what attracted them to the buzzing metropolis.

Honeymooners take in the sigh

ts

Sarah and Luke Patching – both in their early 30s – decided on New York for their honeymoon in 2009 and say the city lived up to every bit of its repu tation. “New York doesn’t stop! It has this amazing vibe and atmosphere, there’s alwa ys something to do or see or eat. I definitely want to go back,” she says. Waking up in the city that doesn’t sleep, if you plan right, there’s a whole bunch of things you can pack into a day of exploration and one of the easiest ways to get around New York is to jump on the subway - you not only get to experience the everyday face of New York but it is very cost effective and great for people watching. New York is home to more than 100 buildings measuring over 500 feet. While you can feel the immensity of the buildings everywhere in New York, it’s best to experience the view from the observation decks of the Empire State Building and the Rockefeller Center. “The Rockefeller center’s observatio n deck at night was a huge highlight; the 360-degree views of the city were breathtaking! Seeing all of the buildings lit up was incredibility romantic and especially momento us for us,” Sarah recalls. Times Square is the embodiment of the New York spirit; 24 hours a day, seven days a week, its vast cityscape is lit up with big screens and populated with a sea of people. For the greatest effect, visit after suns et when the lights are so numerou s and bright you could be forgiven for thinking it’s the middle of the day. “We went to Times Square on our last night and it began to snow … it was simply perfect. The who le city really does live up to the hype you hear abou t. I felt like I had all this extra ener gy and a new sense of excitement.” When asked if they had any fear in the aftermath of the terrorist’s attacks of 9/11, Sarah is quick to defend the city. “I was pleasantly surprised. I felt as safe as I would in any capital city in Australia. I’m an air hostess, so I’m travelling all the time. The World Trade Centre site was hard to com prehend… quite emotional and conf ronting.” Getting around by foot was a grea t way to take in New York and the newly-married couple managed to walk their way through 50 blocks in one day. Altho ugh they say it’s a good idea to invest in a pair of walk ing shoes and a good map of the city.

F

rom the croonings of Old Blue Eyes to the uberstylish lifestyle of SATC’s Carrie Bradshaw, New York has been a source of inspiration, titillation, grandiose glamour and general awe for all who dream to visit the enthralling city. It’s impossible to take in all the excitement of New York City in one hit as even lifelong New York inhabitants can happen upon something new if they’re looking hard enough. To uncover the city’s vast history and culture in just a few words is nigh on impossible. So instead of writing from one viewpoint, we’ve asked three Gold Coast locals to document their search of adventure, love and entertainment in the big apple. Their varied perspectives will give some tips and hints on just how to distill the NYC experience into that single holiday, for those itching to go or just living vicariously.

Baby boomers light up the town Taking in New York from a baby boomers perspective, mid50s local couple Denise Hanson, a hairdresser, and her husband Wayne, who runs his own plumbing business, were captivated by the sights and vibrancy of the big apple. Like the scene where Big tries once again to woo Carrie in SATC, Denise and Wayne took a horse drawn carriage ride through Central Park and got caught up in the romance. “New York makes you feel happy, young and alive,” the hairdresser quips. The couple even indulged in a SATC sightseeing tour that took them through the series’ shoot locations and neighbouring districts. “We saw where the celebrities live, eat and play, walked down Fifth Avenue, visited some gorgeous boutiques and in true New York style, sipped on a cosmopolitan. I thought we’d be too old for the tour, but half the group was couples our age.” Nobody does live theatre like New York. Whether you’re into dramas, comedies or musicals, you’ll find shows that erupt with attention-grabbing sets and talented performers. It’s wise to book tickets for Broadway before leaving Australia as the popular shows are often fully-booked. The Brooklyn Bridge is an iconic structure and inspiring symbol of humankind’s ability to invent and achieve. The landmark also provides one of the most dramatic walking routes in New York City as you cross over the East River from Manhattan to Brooklyn, take photos of Downtown and New York Harbour along the way or do as Denise and Wayne did and take a helicopter ride, taking in New York from a birds-eye-view. This five-mile, 25-minute boat ride from Lower Manhattan to the northern tip of Staten Island is free and the views are priceless. “We saw the Statue of Liberty from the ferry when we crossed over to Staten Island. We’d love to take the tour and experience it at a closer proximity next time”. At the end of the ride, ferry riders are transported to the historic St. George neighborhood home of the Staten Island Museum and the St. George Theatre, which is just over eight decades old. “New York City locals love the Aussie accent and are intrigued about ‘Down Under’. Visiting New York was a fantastic experience, we had lots of fun together and can now share the memories with our friends and family.”

The city and the single

girl

Lisa Pilgrim, a 34-yea r-old make-up artist, trav elled to New York as a sol o tourist. “New York is full of single guys and girls and it’s true how they say the city never sleeps! There is an abundance of act ivities, day and night. There are endless parties, fun ctions, fundraisers, dinners and events. New Yorkers are very social, they like a good get together,” she says. Her favourite destina tion was the Meatpack ing district – with its divers e range of bars, restau rants and nightspots (and it’s a popular locale for mo vie and TV shoots). Lisa says she couldn’t believe how much peo ple walk and take cabs in New York. And her tips for first time travelers is not to go to New York in win ter – unless you like the extreme cold or the middle of summer as the temperature skyrocket s with staggering humidity. So there you have it. Wh ether you’re 34 or 74, Ne w York has the appeal and attractions that can ent ertain tourists of all ages, lea ving you feeling top of the list, head of the heap, kin g of the hill and with many a fine thrill.

day at Hope Island’s Red Rock restaurant-café is likely to kick off early with a plate of smoked salmon and hollandaise sauce on a toasted muffin, or an all-time favourite big breakfast with the lot. Come lunchtime, it’s back for a choice of tempura fish, slow-cooked barbecue ribs, a beef burger on Turkish or maybe a pappadelle carbonara. Then, when dinner arrives it delivers a menu offering slow braised lamb shanks, a roasted baby beetroot salad or lobster mornay, that arrives with an apple, fennel, spinach and pine nut salad. “We often find people will start their day by turning up for breakfast, only to come back with friends or family for dinner,’’ says Colin Chittenden, new owner of the popular waterfront bar and grill at Hope Island’s Marina. “The locals love the location, the convenience and the variety Red Rock offers, and we love that they treat it like their own local eating place.” Mind you, there’s good reason for that. The location is ideal and perfect for meeting up with friends or family to share a catch-up coffee or a meal, all the time taking in the stunning views of the marina’s waterfront.

“You couldn’t get a better location. It sets the mood straight away. You sit down and the view joins you,’’ says Colin. It makes you feel good, even on a rainy day.” At this stage, Colin says he has no plans to change the style of the restaurant bar and grill. “It’s been running well for customers and the menu is really popular. But we might just tweak it here and there, keep it interesting and entertaining as we go along.” Wednesday nights have been set aside as Rib night, when the specials focus on everyone’s favourite, barbecue pork spare ribs, and the pizza menu has also bee reinstated with a choice of eatin or takeaway, with a gourmet selection. Live music will be featured on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, with plans to add Sunday afternoon sessions. “We are also open to catering for special functions, such as office and birthday parties, engagements and weddings,’’ says Colin. “In fact, any way you want to celebrate, we’re here to help you.” Check out the new Red Rock, Hope Island Marina. 5510 8488

Tip: Use the smaller sizes to give a complete curl; using the larger sizes will result in merely a wave. The curl we are seeing this season is by far more full and volumous; a voluptuous look with lots of bounce. Think ‘70s high fashion.

The new season up do – high bun. This is great for those with long or medium length hair with lots of it! It’s high and it’s big! Hair is neatly scraped up high on top of the head where a beautiful bun sits on top. Think I dream of Genie. Hot tip: When attempting this one, take a few sections instead of trying to make your bun out of one large section of hair. For those with fine hair, go to a hairdressing supplier and buy a doughnut – padding which you pull your ponytail through. It will give great cushioning – you know what they say; fake it till you make it! So far, I’ve seen a few variations. Try these out: Crimp a section so it pops in and out here and there, it will mix up your hair texture a little, fun for something different and it looks fabulous! You can of course try the smooth option – very sophisticated or the perfect look for our GC lifestyle or for the messy option. When hair is messy and not freshly washed it is great to work September 2010

with; you will have plenty of natural body and height. This ‘do is a great fix on a bad hair day! Quiffs-are-a-plenty on the runway. We do love a quiff. It’s a great way to spice up a pony tail or change a short hair ‘do. Quiffs this season are particularly high and for those of you with a crop, go for an uber-cool look and give it directional shift by angling your quiff to the side. Soften the look with some great earrings. seasonal tones of colour This season is sun-kissed and natural. Keep those foils fine. Colour should be only a few shades lighter than your natural tones. Remember to just enhance your natural colour and this means keeping the look soft. No matter what hair type you have and your own personal style; there are many versatile looks this season. And definitely something for everyone. For more hair do’s and don’ts, head to: www.amandahigl.com.au

id you know three out of four children have crowded teeth and incorrectly developing jaws? These problems can be seen from as early as three to five. But most parents accept regular professional advice and wait until their child is 1214 years old to have braces fitted. For the last 20 years, Myofunctional Research Co. (MRC) has proven when a child shows early signs of crowded teeth, poor facial development also occurs. The forces of the tongue, cheeks and lips, combined with bad oral habits can greatly affect the positioning of the teeth and facial development. MRC Clinics provides early orthodontic treatment to assist in straightening your child’s teeth and jaws without the need for braces or extraction. This unique approach to orthodontic treatment focuses on treating the real causes of crooked teeth using appliances developed by MRC which

assist in the correction of bad oral habits in the growing child. The treatment involves children taking part in a range of fun and educational activities while wearing their MRC appliance, which is used for just one hour per day and overnight while sleeping. This treatment is now being used throughout the world and is fast becoming the preferred approach to early orthodontic treatment. Now Dr Chris Farrell (MRC’s founder) has teamed up with Ms Vanee Ganesaratnam (Australia’s first Myofunctional Therapist) and Dr Wijey to launch MRC’s first Super Clinic, which will be situated in Upper Coomera. This clinic will service one of the fastest growing areas in Australia with state-of-the-art facilities while acting as a flagship training clinic for dentists and orthodontists around the world who are adopting MRC’s way of treatment. “As parents, we all want treatment for our kids that is less invasive, longer-lasting and promotes

improved overall health,” Dr Wijey said. “Our revolutionary system is used in over 100 countries and we have 40 MRC Clinics worldwide, but this super clinic will act as a beacon of excellence for the international orthodontic industry, and we are excited that kids from our own backyard will be able to benefit from it.” MRC Clinics is also excited about their newlydeveloped educational materials that help children to learn about the importance of nutrition and breathing. “We’ve known for a long time now that poor nutrition not only causes dental decay, but that it is also one of the causes crooked teeth,” said Dr Wijey. October 9 will mark the opening of MRC Clinics’ new Upper Coomera clinic so we encourage you to come along and learn more about improving your child’s dental health while you let the kids indulge in some of the fun and activities. v Information provided by MRC. R

ecently, I woke up with a pain in the neck and was also unable to move it. Why would this have happened and what can I do to avoid it happening again?

There are several reasons why neck pain like this occurs. You might have slept in an awkward position and rolled onto your stomach, causing problems with the neck’s rotation range and resulting in discomfort and pain. Using a pillow which has passed its useby date or which is not supportive can also be detrimental and result in pain when you wake up. Using the correct pillow should support the hollow in your neck when you are lying on your side or back. I usually recommend pillows made of memory foam. Poor posture at work or at play can lead to soft tissue structures becoming sore, which can

again result in restricted movement and find you waking with a stiff neck. It is important to seek help to regain full movement and resolve your pain. The longer injuries are left, the harder they are to resolve. I recommend you see a good physiotherapist, who can assess your problem and look into the reasons behind your neck pain. Once the causes and problems are identified, treatment, a home program and posture correction exercises can be given so you avoid further distress. If your neck needs further or more advanced treatment, they will also be able to advise you on what to do to ensure the best health for your neck. v Information provided by Philippa Gilbert, PhysioMax, Hope Island. Dressing up as a tooth fairy is all in a day’s work for Stephanie Wilson – if it means getting more kids to go to the dentist.

N

obody likes going to the dentist all that much and least of all, kids. But Stephanie Wilson, chief smile-maker and tooth fairy of the TFI Dentistry in Labrador, will do almost anything to get kids to look after their teeth. Even if it means she has to dress up as a tooth fairy every day. Stephanie, a trained therapist and hygienist, has been dressing up as the tooth fairy for 20 years – a practice she started while working for Queensland’s school dental service. “I’d do tooth fairy days for health promotion,” she says. “I’d dress up in the dental van as the

tooth fairy and I realised the kids were so much more comfortable when I did it.” When legislation was enacted in 2003, allowing therapists to own a dental practice, Stephanie saw an opportunity to start a business that took the fear out of going to the dentist. “Luckily we [she and her husband Grant] were in a financial situation where we could buy and build, so in November 2003, we found a location and built a three-chair practice. I always wanted to do this for the children. I started dressing up as the tooth fairy not for children to overcome their dental fears, but so there were never any fears to begin with. I want them to have a pleasant experience.” She registered the TFI brand (Tooth Fairy International), and just last month, expanded her Tooth Fairy concept to the Gold Coast, with their new Labrador surgery. “We’ve found a lot of dentists don’t particularly want to treat children, and will refer them directly to a paediatric dentist, so we’ve been going around telling them we’re all in this together. We have special fairy decorations in our rooms, and we dress up as fairies to treat them. And sometimes we’ll take a photo of the child with the fairies and put them up on Facebook.” Stephanie says it wasn’t so easy in the beginning. “It was amazing for me,” she says. “When I would interview dentists and tell them the philosophy of the practice, some would just stand back and say ‘you’re not a dentist’. I said that it shouldn’t matter, but people thought it was crazy and a lot of dentists walked away. They just didn’t want to know. But it only took one to come on board before it became acceptable.” The Gold Coast practice now has four tooth fairies – Stephanie, Emina Muminovic, Georgia Campbell and Ingrid Seibert. The principal dentist in the practice is Dr Rhett Shapcott. In a move guaranteed to elicit nervous laughs from associate dentists, Stephanie says, “We’d make jokes about them dressing up as tooth

51

fairies, but the dentists were never there for the kids. Their job was to treat adults, whereas my specialty is more with the kids. But there are obviously some limitations. Children under the age of four have to be treated by a dentist, but I’d take it from that age upwards.” Stephanie had the walls and furniture of the surgery painted in soft colours and hung fairy lights from the ceiling, ensuring any young tot’s visit to the dentist is a positive and fun experience to remember. The tooth fairy has even written a children’s book to help kids relate to the dental experience. “The book came about because the whole time I treat my children I’m saying little rhymes to them. Kids will say ‘how old are you?’ and I’ll say 102, things like that. And another thing I’d say to them is, ‘I’m going to write a book one day so you can see how you look in the chair’,” she says. The Story of the Tooth fairy as it has never, EVER been told is coming out this month. “I’ve got a few colleges booked in and I go to assembly in the character of the tooth fairy and I’ll read the story to a child at the school. So I’ll get a child up on stage to read the story to them.” She’s also found support amongst her former colleagues in the school dental service, which is a positive at a time when school dental services are suffering from ever-diminishing funds. “I know how hard it is for them,” she says. “So we’re working in conjunction with them, and they’re really great to refer patients to me. They do get bogged down, so we’re offering a backup opportunity for parents who want to come privately.”

Special offer: But it’s not just the kids. Stephanie looks after. For the first week of this month (and in time to celebrate father’s day) the practice is offering a special where all new male patients (who are a with a health fund) receive the no GAP payment on their visit. September 2010

Bikramaffect A

Bikram has become, quite literally as even celebs have discovered, the hottest fitness trend around right now.

M

adonna is a fan. Actor Robert Downey Jnr and Sting are both devotees. Child star Brooke Shields and singer Diana Ross are members of the club, and even Gwyneth Paltrow, a committed exercise obsessive, is lining up for a stretch and twist. The star-studded group is just a scattering of the top drawer celebrities who have taken Bikram Yoga to heart – as well as to body. Bikram has become, quite literally, the hottest fitness trend around. “It’s because it works so well,’’ says Giselle Brown, who was a six-day-a-week gym junkie before she took a Birkram class. “From the first moment I walked into the studio, I was converted. The class left me with such a feeling of exhilaration and wellbeing that I was hooked,’’ she says.. So profoundly so, that she quit a secure and wellpaid job, went to America to train as a teacher with the yoga’s founder, Bikram Choudhury, and with partner Karen Luckman, has now set up a centre in Southport. It opened in February, with a few classes but every week, the demand has seen extra sessions consistently added. Choudhury devised the Bikram system employing 26 different postures and conducted in a 40 degree heated room to attend to every physical and physiological condition. “The heat is really to mimic the conditions that yoga is practiced in India, where the temperature is natural,’’ she adds. “But Choudhury and his own yoga guru were quasi health practitioners. People would come and use the yoga

September 2010

to improve their health – and Bikram was devised so everyone could have access to a more universal system.” Although they don’t promote specific health benefits, both Giselle and Karen agree that the changes people experience doing Bikram yoga are often quite remarkable. “While the heat can be challenging at first, it also almost forces you to concentrate and become more aware of your body. It allows you to become more flexible and the combination of heat and movements address every muscle, every fascia, every tendon and every cell in the body.” Their youngest class member is 12, their oldest 75, but Giselle says there is no real age limit. “We just ask that you let us know of any health problems and the poses are adjusted to accommodate them. But what I’ve found consistently, is that you just feel so alive and well after every class, that watch out, you’ll be an addict yourself in no time.” The centre runs a special introduction of 10 consecutive days for $20 to give people a chance to really experience the yoga. “For many people, the initial reaction to the heat and poses can be challenging. But once you start experiencing the benefits, we can almost guarantee that you’ll be hooked just like we were.” The Bikram Yoga Centre is located in Pirelli Street, Southport. hat better way to finish a meal on a warm summer’s afternoon, than with a slightly chilled glass of port wine. Typically a richer, sweeter and heavier wine, this now infamous beverage was created by accident in the 17th century when the British shunned French wine products, in place of Portugal’s comparable offerings. With long shipping distances from Portugal’s Douro region, winemakers would fortify their wines with a special grape spirit known as Aguardente to stop the fermentation process. What would eventually arrive after this practice was a naturally sweeter, syrup like wine which came be known as Port. Port is produced from grapes grown in the Douro River Valley region, now recognised as one of the world’s best wine producing regions. The Douro Valley is a cultural landscape of exceptional beauty. Separated into two areas; the Baixo and the Cima or upper area which although produces less wine, is of a better quality; Portugal’s Douro Valley remains to this day, the centre of much of the world Port production. Offering a montage of unforgettable experiences with its rich history, the region’s natural beauty, culture and divine cuisine is a treasure waiting to be discovered. Now, imagine discovering this unforgettable region onboard Uniworld Boutique River Cruises’ newest vessel, the Douro Spirit. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises recently released its 2011 Europe and Russia River

Cruises program offering 30 world-class itineraries which sail the many waterways of France, Spain, Portugal, Central and Eastern Europe, and Russia. First setting sail along the Portugal and Spain’s UNESCO World Heritage designated Douro River Valley in 2005. In 2011, the company will introduce Douro Spirit, on its 11-day Portugal, Spain and the Douro River Valley river cruise. Every riverview stateroom and suite onboard the new ship features a French balcony so you can get closer to the scenery of the region’s unspoiled natural landscapes. Stateroom and suites feature hotel beds, spacious builtin closets, flat screen TVs with satellite and individual climate-control thermostats. The Douro Spirit’s common areas provide added comfort with a main lounge featuring a full-service bar and dance floor, vast sun deck with jacuzzi and swimming pool, onboard restaurant, fully-equipped fitness room, opulent massage room, beauty salon, and boutique. Taste a variety of wonderful local wines produced onsite in the countless village vineyards, including the regions famed Port wine. FINANCE

Q &AFinance with Wealthfarm

I

have a self managed superannuation fund with a balance of around $200,000. Is there some way I can buy property as an asset for my superfund because I don’t like shares?

Under recent changes to legislation, your Self Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) can now purchase residential, commercial and retail property. It sounds almost too good to be true, but your fund makes all loan repayments and when the property is paid off, ownership of the property is transferred to the SMSF. This means that the rent and your super contributions pay the loan repayments and upon sale of the property, it is within the tax friendly superannuation environment. Your other SMSF assets remain fully protected as in the event of default, the borrower only has recourse to the mortgaged property. The

property is dealt with in the same way as a ‘normal’ investment property. The property can be renovated, repaired and sold in the usual fashion, it can even be rented out with all rental income paid directly to the SMSF. The property can be paid out at any time, subject to the conditions of the mortgage, and some lenders even offer discounted mortgage rates for this type of borrowing. Finance experts are already claiming this as the best news to hit Self-Managed Super Funds for years. v Information provided by Wealthfarm, Hope Island. If you have any questions on this, or other financial matters, including financial planning, and accounting, contact Wealthfarm on 1800 967 548.

INVEST IN PROPERTY WITH YOUR SUPER In July 2007, the government introduced some major changes to superannuation including new laws allowing the trustees of a self managed superannuation fund (SMSF) to use their assets to invest directly into investment property with the added benefit of gearing. For many, the ability to leverage in their SMSF to purchase investment property may have major benefits including using debt to create wealth whilst utilising concessional taxation rates and no capital gains tax once the super fund is in pension stage.

At Wealthfarm we can give you professional advice taking all your individual needs and circumstances into account to ensure you have the correct plan to achieve financial freedom.

A quick trip around the block in a hummer (with Elvis and Marilyn) and suddenly there was a queue of hundreds waiting to head upstairs and check out the newlyrefurbished club. Only, some guests didn’t realise there were two events happening at the same time. Downstairs in the bar was the ‘general’ relaunch party, whilst upstairs was the ‘VIP’ event with a handpicked guest list, colourful characters, c a n a p é s and plenty of champagne.. If the Towers a Rocking!

Having heard this story before, l though it was a little bit of a GC urban myth. But at a recent social event, l heard the story straight from the horse’s mouth! (so to speak). The bronzed, well-built lifesaver that has been luring ladies back to his beach tower really does exist. This blonde lass, who had sipped a few champagnes, decided to open up the topic of the most unusual location for a certain type of ‘activity’. Good grief, great Scott! When this lady mentioned a lifeguard tower, squirrel was onto her for the next 20 mins getting every little detail. Let’s just say he is able to watch the surf and partake in various other activities at the same time. Multi tasking has surpassed a new level. Beach anyone?

What it means to have Sue Bampton’s ‘signature’ on YOUR Garden Makeover If you were called in to draw up plans for the palace gardens for the Prince of Kuwait, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d ‘arrived’. But for Sue Bampton, it’s just another day in the offi ce. Sue has consulted on a $34 billion Dubai project and on government projects in the Middle East. But her passion is working for clients ‘at home’ on the Gold Coast. To say she has local experience is an understatement. She has over 20 years worth of projects to her name across the Gold Coast. With this local knowledge, Sue thrives on bringing colour, beauty, and liveability to her clients’ landscaping projects, adding not just style, but fi ve and six fi gures to their property values.

Experience her ‘genius’ in YOUR garden When ‘the lady with the hat’ walks around your property with you, pencilling ideas, pointing out where you could have a water feature, accent lighting, rock features, or some ‘under a Tuscan sun’ style paving, or even an outdoor kitchen entertaining area, be warned! ... You’ll fi nd it hard to contain your excitement at the possibilities she conjures up for your landscape project. After all, as the most highly awarded landscape designer and horticulturist on the Gold Coast, Sue Bampton is legendary for her genius in design, fl air for the creative, and down to earth practicality.

And talking of things practical, it just makes sound economic sense. For what is a small investment in comparison to your property value now, having Sue’s ‘signature’ on your garden makeover will not only give you one of Gold Coast’s showpiece properties (and make the neighbours green with envy), it can add as much as 25% to the value of your home or your commercial property. Says Sue, “Increasing numbers of residents have realised their gardens have become a little tired. And they’re astute enough to know it makes their property value suffer too. So when we come in, we transform everything to bring the property up to showpiece condition. We also test and rejuvenate the soil, so it’s rich with lots of micro organisms and other good things. The transformation in your property has to be seen to be believed!”

A free assessment (valued at $750) If you are thinking your garden is hungry for a ‘Sue Bampton’ makeover, Sue will visit your property, free of charge. She’ll pace out your garden, take notes, and go away to put together her ideas for you ... conceptual sketches, colour themes, lots of plant suggestions and images, so you can ‘see’ the new makeover in your mind’s eye. To make a free, no obligation appointment, call 5528 4123. (Call now to avoid disappointment as Sue’s diary will fi ll up.) Or email Sue at info@grotec.com.au ... and of course, feel free to visit the website: www.grotec.com.au

HOROSCOPE

stro girl

Want to know if you should splash on those new heels or save for a rainy day? Waiting for Mr Drop Dead Yummy to saunter through the door? Our new spirit guide has all the answers (well nearly all).

LIBRA 23 September-22 October Time to get out of your head and into your heart, otherwise your fantasies might just take over more than you want them to! Learn to trust your feelings and the change will do you good.

Aquarius 20 January-18 February Put on your floaties or grab your surfboard so you can ride the waves of your emotions. A second chance at a missed opportunity arises so make sure you don’t wipe out twice!

Gemini 21 May-20 June They say lightening doesn’t strike twice, but this month girl, you’re electric! Open your heart and your mind to discover who might step inside! It could either be Mr. Right, or Mr. Right Now!

Scorpio 23 October-21 November It’s all systems go, go, go with Scorpians this month. Get the girls together, frock up and shake what yah mama gave you for some well deserved fun and frivolity!

Pisces 19 February-20 March The things we do for love…(isn’t that a song?) Asking for what you want increases your chances, but doesn’t always guarantee a happy ending. Beware of extravagant promises; they may end in tears

Cancer 21 June-22 July Sensual delights are the theme, so surround yourself with good food, great wine and a fabulous man. This will be the perfect recipe to cook up a hot, out of body experience

Sagittarius 22 November-21 December Karma isn’t a spicy dish at your local Indian, so be aware of your desire to gossip and stir up trouble this month. You can be assertive without being aggressive; otherwise you will likely get what you deserve!

Aries 21 March-19 April You might not be sure where you’re heading girl, but that doesn’t stop you! It’s time to tame your impulsiveness before you do something you’ll regret, again

Leo 23 July-22 August You may need to take a little time to look at your deep, dark past this month Leo, but don’t get stuck in the lion’s den! It’s time to utilise your natural magnetism so you can purr like a kitten once more.

Capricorn 22 December-19 January Make love, not war should be your mantra and it might just lead you to a romantic getaway. I see the palm trees, the warm breeze and a tiny bikini on the horizon sometime soon…

Taurus 20 April-20 May Slip on one of your snazziest dresses and strut your stuff. But remember this: don’t settle for anything less than you deserve or you may end up feeling cranky and frustrated with those around you.

Virgo 23 August-22 September Virgos are risky and frisky this month, but don’t be led down the garden path! It’s time for a makeover so you can release your inner Goddess and let her shine!

Minogue

42, Singer, Actress, Cancer Survivor.

Kylie on longevity:

At the age most children start school, a young Ms Minogue took up acting as a full-time profession. One of her first characters ‘Charlene’ in the Australian soap Neighbours is still arguably one of the most popular characters ever to grace the Australian television screen. It was a natural progression from TV starlet to pop star for the young Kylie and in July 1987, she released her first single, a remake of the 1962 Little Eva hit ‘Locomotion’. The song went to No.1 in Australia and remained in the top spot for seven weeks, becoming the biggest Australian single of the ‘80s. In an industry where you can count on one hand the number of pop artists who’ve lasted more than a decade, let alone two, Kylie has reinvented herself time after time and become one of the most popular artists in both Australia and the UK. Over the last 20 years, she’s sold over 60 million albums worldwide and 50 chart-topping singles. “Ultimately, yes, it’s my name and I have to deliver the goods but it doesn’t happen without a team. So I try and work with the best people I can,” the star once said.

Kylie on love:

In Europe and Australia, she has become one of her generation’s most recognisable celebrities and sex symbols. Standing at just under five feet tall, her physique, including her celebrated derriere has been hailed as “a national treasure. Kylie’s allure is magnified by her vivaciousness, she quips “I’m just a natural flirt, but I don’t see it in a sexual way. A lot of the time I’m like an overexcited puppy.” Kylie Minogue’s celebrity ex-boyfriend list reads like a romance novel, dating back to her early Neighbours days with costar, Jason Donovan.

September 2010

66

She’s been linked with the late INXS frontman, Michael Hutchence and served as the inspiration for the band’s hit single, ‘Suicide Blonde’ and who she said gave her freedom and liberation. In recent times, she’s dated model James Gooding, actor Olivier Martinez, and is currently seeing model, Andres Velencoso. Yet to walk down the aisle, Kylie is quick to defend her single life and who wouldn’t be happy with the likes of chiseled Spanish Louis Vuitton model Andres Velencoso by your side?

Kylie on life:

During her 2005 sold-out Showgirl The Greatest Hits Tour’, Kylie was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. The pop starlet spent the next 12 months focusing on her treatment and recovery from cancer, then of November 11, 2006, she made an emotional return to the stage to resume her tour retitled, Showgirl Homecoming. Optimistic about her recovery, she told reporters, “Having had cancer, one important thing to know is you’re still the same person at the end. You’re stripped down to near zero. But most people come out the other end feeling more like themselves than ever before.” For a one-time child actress with a musical dream, Kylie Minogue’s success has surpassed even her expectations and after being dismissed early in her career by some critics, she has gone on to become one of the greatest female performers in the world. 2010 sees the ushering in a new and era in her story with the release of Kylie’s 11th studio album, Aphrodite, proving that she indeed does have the ability and strength to conquer the world, one hit at a time.
