ON’T you ever wish you were one of those clever people who invent things, like maybe the person who designed post-it notes because they ran out of sticky tape and memo cubes. The hair stylist who started a straight hair revolution with the invention of the GHD’s (does anyone in the world not own a set of these?). Or the bloke who created an apple craze when he developed the iPhone (hellooo, where would we be without you, Mr Jobs?!). But I bet we all wish we were the ones who came up with mega genius invention, social networking site Facebook. Creator, Mark Zuckerburg (debatable, depending on which team of the based-onactual-events Social Network movie you side with), went from a relatively friendless computer geek to one with over 500 million friends and counting. Now that crazy whizz kid sits at number 40 on Forbes magazine’s Rich List with an estimated wealth of over $14 billion...okay, not bad for a struggling Harvard student! I once had a vision to invent hair ties that don’t snag your hair but turns out someone already beat me to it. If I ever go to my high school reunion, sadly, I don’t think there’ll be too many invention tales to tell. The one thing I think we’d all like to see invented is a cure for the Big C. It’s something that affects all of us at some point or another during our lives, ripping them apart with the pain and devastation it leaves in its wake. This month we’re celebrating all things romance here at Get it with our ‘loved-up’ issue but we’re also focusing on something not so warm and fuzzy. As we spotlight Ovarian Cancer in our feature Against All Odds p36, it casts a dark cloud of a grim reminder over our heads that life is all too fragile and none of us are exempt from this brutal disease. I had a very dear friend who last year, was exposed to her own private battle with cancer. As a mum of two beautiful girls, it was a very frightening and sobering experience as she went from being a normal, beautiful and happy woman, mum and wife, to being told she had cervical cancer. For a short while the fear that gripped her family was so incredibly intense it consumed their lives with grief. What if they couldn’t operate? What if they didn’t find it soon enough? How would her girls grow up without their mum? Fortunately within four weeks of her diagnosis, the surgery was a success and although she was thousands of kilometers away from her family and friends, she underwent an operation that removed the cells and hopefully prevents this vicious disease from ever returning to her fit and healthy body. Six months on and she’s back to normal, running every day and eternally grateful for the life she still has and the mum she is still able to be to her two beautiful girls. Some are not so lucky…

QUEENSLAND FLOOD DEVASTATION:

It’s where locals come to eat...

Last month, the entire state of Queensland was catastrophically engulfed in the nation’s worst flood crisis ever. With Brisbane, Ipswich, Toowoomba and other surrounding areas now facing a devastating clean-up of postwar proportions, we are once again reminded of the devilish hand with which Mother Nature can deal her nasty blows. With cities, towns and suburbs completely torn apart by the torrent of these flood waters, families and communities have been gripped with fear. We have seen the nation’s forces, together with a stoic yet brave state premier in Anna Bligh, band together with the people of our great state to do their bit to pitch in and help families who have not only lost all their worldly possessions, but in some tragic cases, family members too. As the death toll hovers fretfully at 20 as we go to print, the people of Queensland – our great and beautiful golden stretch of the nation – attempt to piece back together their ravaged lives and homes – most are just content to have survived this horrific disaster and still be alive. Just as the Victorian bushfires tore apart homes and families in February 2009, we now all face the grim task of repair. To do your bit and help our great state on the road to recovery, please donate to: telethon.smartservice.gov.au or Ph: 1800 219 028 The battle has only just begun and will continue to affect lives for many years to come. Our love, prayers and thoughts are with anyone affected by this devastating disaster. The Get it team.

I just want to say how much I loved the Pina love story. I think it gives everyone hope that there is a special someone out there, no matter what age, it is never too late. It brought a tear to my eye. The story was written so beautifully and with so much respect for the two individuals. Nadia via email.

ll good love stories are cut from the same cloth – beginning with desire and running the gamut of hurt, longing and adversity before finally reaching their happily ever after. So when you stumble across a real-life story of true love conquering all in a beautiful and strange twist of fate, you have to share it. And so begins the tale of Pina Omeros and the love of her life, Marino Belligoi. A beautiful romance to restore faith in all that love encompasses and the belief that true love does indeed exist. Pina and Marino, share a romance that follows the same path as The Notebook and after what seems like a lifetime apart are now living together by an idyllic white sand beach. Pina, born in Calabria in southern Italy, migrated at an early age to Australia with her parents. The family found comfort in the surrounds of other migrant families and settled in Miranda, Sydney like thousands of other post-war migrants of the time. Pina’s mother and father worked tirelessly to give their family a new life. Pina’s family grew and her mother gave birth to three more boys, all of whom went on to lead successful lives. “All the Italian migrant children in the area attended catholic parish schools and the local Italian community was tight-knit while still integrating and respecting the Australian way of life,” Pina says. In 1973, Pina was first introduced to Marino, born in Udine in the north of Italy by her cousin and like a scene from a movie, she knew instantly it was love at first sight. Having completed his education in Italy, Marino was in Australia for work experience and to research his paternal grandfather’s had migrated to North Queensland history, who in 1925 but returned to live in Italy after Marino was born. New Year’s Resolutions From ditching the booze to hiking the Himalayas – these reso’s are sure to inspire you!

2

This one’s a hard one. While many people use the New Year as an incentive to cut back or quit drinking, most are not equipped to make such a drastic lifestyle change all at once. Rather than quitting cold turkey, you’ll do much better if you taper gradually, and moderate your drinking effectively. Begin by cutting your alcohol intake to just one day of drinking per week. You’ll be surprised at the difference it makes!

3

Lose the Christmas bulge

With over half the nation‚s population considered overweight or obese, it‚s not surprising that weight loss is as the top of everyone‚s New Year‚s resolutions list. Setting reasonable goals and staying focused are the two most important factors in sticking with a weight loss program, and the key to success to shedding those few extra kilo‚s. Regular exercise has been associated with more health benefits than anything else known to man. Recent studies show that it reduces the risk of some cancers, increases longevity, helps achieve and maintain weight loss, enhances mood, lowers blood pressure, and even improves arthritis. So why not make now the time to start getting in shape with the latest dance craze to take the world by storm? Zumba is an effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness-party that’s sure to get you shimmying your way to a new figure in no time.

Travel is the perfect way to open your mind and experience different cultures. While no one person can never see the entire world, there are many fascinating places to cover. Not only will travel open your mind culturally but often spirtually and emotionally too.

Work shouldn’t always come first! Even though we know this, we still don’t stick to it. That’s why this year we’ve put this one at the top of our list. Spend more time with family and friends this year. Make plans to meet up with friends for an evening of camaraderie at a favourite restaurant, or pack the car with blankets and games and take the family to the local park or beach for a picnic. Time is the one thing you can never get back.

Quit smoking If you have resolved to stomp out your smoking habit, you’ll find it’s one of the best decisions you can ever make. The benefits to your health, relationships, finances, vitality, the environment and to your sense of selfesteem for having conquered a really hardto-kick habit will make any and all of your efforts and determination more than worth while. Now more than ever, over-the-counter availability of nicotine replacement therapy provides easier access to proven quitting aids. Even if you’ve tried before and failed. On average, smokers try four times before they quit for good. Kick it now!

6

Save your money

Was money a big source of stress in your life last year? With petrol prices through the roof, food prices not far behind, jobs decreasing, the mortgage mess continuing, the housing market still tanking, and the “R” word on everyone’s lips, now is a good time to change. Make a determined effort to cut back some of your debt this year and join the millions of Aussies who have resolved to spend this year getting a handle on their finances and start saving for the things they really want in life. It’s a promise that will repay itself many times over in the year ahead.

Remember when it was said that the computer would usher in the Era of the Paperless Office? Ha to that! Almost immediately we have five times the amount of paper than before. And there’s nothing worse than having a messy cluttered home or office – it makes you feel messy and cluttered too. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Organisation is one of the few that can be a very reasonable goal and, in most cases, a quick turn around. Whether you want your home organised enough that you can invite friends over on a whim, or your office organised enough that you can find the stapler when you need it, attempt to de-clutter your home office and you’ll instantly feel a wave of relief.

Nothing says love and romance like chocolate...a forbidden guilty pleasure that ignites your senses.

S

aint Valentine has been kicking around since the early ages – 500 AD to be exact. His power of love has seen romantics present their betrothed with flowers, love notes, teddy bears and – an unfortunate decade through the ‘80s – bottles of Old Spice. But there doesn’t exist a more pleasurable treat than chocolate. For centuries it has been touted as

the most desired aphrodisiac of the food world. Even though it’s a guilty pleasure, the taste of chocolate is one that is simply irresistable. Local chocolatier Max Brenner stocked their shelves as they prepare for hordes of chocoholics. We’ve asked them to share a recipe or two so you can try out your own chocolate making skills at home.

Hollywood comes to Max Brenner Australia’s obsession with chocolate master Max Brenner has seen over 1000 tonnes of the cocoa treat pass our lips since its inception over a decade ago. And the demand for chocolate was so great they opened a third store on the Gold Coast in Broadbeach. Since opening in December, Hollywood hunks Chris Pine and Josh Hartnett have stopped in to the new Broadbeach locale to satisfy their choccie cravings. Down Under for the filming of his

film, Singularity, Josh was spotted satisfying his sweet tooth at the new Max Brenner Chocolate Bar more than a few times. The star was staying close by during filming and the self-confessed chocoholic regularly popped into the store for his daily coffee and chocolate fix.

Win a choccie date at Max Brenner Calling all chocoholics: Get it is giving two lucky readers the chance to win a $20 voucher to spend at any Max Brenner Chocolate Bar on the Coast. Simply send your details to info@getitmedia.com.au

A high school bonfire chocolate melting heart cake with a soft marshmallow first memory hidden inside Ganache Filling ½ cup heavy cream 7 ounces whole large marshmallows, plus 10 marshmallows, finely diced 7 ½ ounces white chocolate, roughly chopped 15 6cm by 4cm deep silicon molds Soufflés 12 ounces dark chocolate (preferably 56 per cent cocoa), roughly chopped 3 sticks unsalted butter 1 ½ cups sugar 8 large eggs, room temperature 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder 1 teaspoon baking powder 15 soufflé ramekins, 6-8cm in diameter

Make the ganache filling: In a small saucepan, cook the cream and the whole marshmallows until the marshmallows melt and the mixture comes to a simmer. Pour over white chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Let sit until chocolate softens, then stir until smooth. Divide the ganache among the 15 silicon molds, sprinkling with the diced marshmallow as you go. Freeze for a minimum of 4 hours. Prepare the soufflés: Preheat the oven to 200C. Melt the dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over simmering water. Add the butter and sugar and stir until the mixture is smooth and warm. Remove from the heat and let cool. Whisk in the eggs one by one. Set aside. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder. Whisk the dry ingredients into the mixture until smooth. Divide among 15 6cm paper baking cups, filling each ¾-full. Put 1 frozen marshmallow ganache piece in the middle of each baking cup. Bake until the soufflés rise and the insides are still molten, about 9 minutes. Serve immediately.

veryone has a vice – whether it be midnight snacks, drinking gravy or putting salt on your cereal. Gemma Malloy’s crutch is without a doubt a love for banging beats in the car. Once a glamorous model by day and a bar manager by night, the stunning blonde stormed her way into the DJ industry in 2007, with a lifelong commitment of a continuation to impress, inspire and manipulate crowds around the nation. This local Coolangatta girl’s finely tuned ear and deftly nimble fingers first spun vinyl on a shift at a local Gold Coast nightclub, prompting her thirst for a career as a professional DJ and eventually placed her as a powerful figure for women in the industry. Gemstar blew us away with her recent compilation mix of her Wild Summer 2010 collection. Her whirlwind album launch tour showcased her talent throughout the nation and just recently ground to a halt earlier this year allowing her time to focus on the release of her upcoming single. The 2007 V8 Supermodel of the Year is often hard to track down with her in high demand as a thriving DJ Australia wide. DJ Gemstar’s dynamic spectacles behind the decks along with glamorous accompaniments notorious club DJ vocalist, Lady Lauryn and MC, Amy Young create powerful experiences of combined vocals, movement and beats. Her explosive performances have sent shock beyond the Gold Coast to LA. In 2008, DJ Gemstar created soundwaves with the request of her presence as a hand-picked DJ at the Hugh Hefner mansion party. Her notoriety has seen her rub shoulders with Hollywood, landing a spot at The Pussy Cat Dolls after party, Quiksilver Pro after party, an invitation to play at Summerfieldayz festivals in 2009 and 2010 along with being asked as a special guest DJ at an Ed Hardy Christmas Party. And with a style ranging from House, Vocal House, Electro House, Big room, Commercial and Trance, every gig is diverse. efining moments A of the ‘00s

A

s Australians look back on the first decade of the new millennium, we take a moment to reflect on all the events and innovations that helped to create the cultural heritage of our ever globalising society. In 10 short years the world as a whole has progressed and witnessed tragedies and milestones that will forever leave a mark on this generation. Back in the early ‘00s did anyone think they would be holding a powerful phone in their pocket with the ability to video call and send images from all around the world or have a computer as our constant sidekick permeating every aspect of our day-to-day lives? Here are the 10 moments that illustrate the ideas, people and innovations that have defined the past decade.

Literature

The Da Vinci Code Published in 2003, author Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code followed symbologist Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu as together, they investigate a murder in Paris’s Louvre Museum. The controversial novel provoked a worldwide interest in the speculation that Jesus Christ of Nazareth may have been married to Mary Magdalene. The book became a worldwide bestseller, has sold over 80 million copies and as of 2009, has been translated into 44 languages. It is the best-selling English language novel of the 21st century and in 2006, Sony’s Columbia Pictures released a film adaptation starring Tom Hanks.

about three-quarters of a fourth novel before his sudden death in November 2004. His partner, Eva Gabrielsson, possesses the notebook computer with the manuscript. Harry Potter An unknown writer by the name of JK Rowling finally got the break she had been waiting for in 1997, with the publication of her first Harry Potter novel she had been working on for seven years. What followed was nothing short of Harry Potter mania. The seven-book series became a global phenomenon almost overnight. By the time the final book was published in 2007, Rowling had become a billionaire and easily the most influential children’s writer of her era. An entire generation grew up along with Harry, Ron, and Hermione, restoring a love for reading in a generation where most grew up in front of the TV. Harry Potter developed a cultlike following, with millions of kids everywhere waiting outside bookstores for midnight parties on release dates. It has since sold over 400 million copies and has been translated into 67 different languages.

The Millennium Trilogy The Millennium Trilogy is a series of three bestselling novels originally written in Swedish by the late Stieg Larsson. The series included The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest and were published in 2005, 2006 and 2007 respectively. The Millennium Trilogy is a publishing phenomenon and has sold more than 36 million copies worldwide. Larsson wrote www.getitmagazine.com.au

Film

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Who doesn’t remember lining up to view at least one of the three blockbuster Lord of the Rings movies on a boxing day over the past decade? The Lord of the Rings Trilogy was directed by Kiwi genius Peter Jackson and were filmed simultaneously. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was released in December 2001. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers was released in December 2002 and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was released in December 2003. Peter Jackson’s film adaptation earned him 17 Oscars. The visual-effects work has been groundbreaking, particularly the creation of the emotionally versatile digital character Gollum. The scale of production was unprecedented with each film a substantial box office success. The Return of the King was also the second movie in history after Titanic to earn over $US1 billion worldwide and at the 2004 Academy Awards, The Return of the King won an incredible 11 Academy Awards.

Television

Reality TV steps it up a notch Whether you like it or not, reality TV has changed the landscape of television over the past decade. It has successfully pushed the boundaries of issues previously untouchable. It reflects common problems in everyday life and offers suggestions and comparisons, offering

SOCIETY viewers a sense of connectedness. Certain analysts believe reality television is encouraging people to be voyeuristic, sociopathic and shameless. American Idol can gain more votes in one show than the entire US presidential election and together with other reality TV shows Survivor, Big Brother and The Amazing Race, reality TV has had a huge effect on the way we watch and interact with live television.

Sports

Sydney’s 2000 Olympic Games The Sydney 2000 Summer Olympic games officially known as the Games of the XXVII Olympiad were an international multi-sport event. Celebrated in 2000, the opening ceremony featured Kylie Minogue riding in on an enormous thong and Olympic Gold Medalist Cathy Freedman’s historic flame-lighting. Socceroos qualifying for the 2006 World Cup One of the most amazing moments for all Australians whether football lovers or not, was the Socceroos qualifying for the second phase of the World Cup 2006 in Germany. Unfortunately they were undone by a late penalty to the Italians but that the Socceroo’s were national heroes. Those at the game remember the emotion of strangers, not merely chatting but hugging and kissing each other. The historic moment at ANZ Stadium came with a victory over Uruguay in a penalty shootout in front of 82,698 fans.

Music

Apple introduces the iPod and iphone In 2001 Apple introduced the iPod to the world previously, mp3 players were unpopular because they were fragile, had a short battery life and put simply were not sexy and fashionable. Apple saw the flaws and in their own futuristic way fixed them all. Eight years later, it’s hard to find a teenager or young adult without an iPod. Following the iPod came the next breakthrough the iPhone expanding the array of touch screen gadgets. It was first introduced to the world on January 9, 2007 and has since changed the face of mobile life. Apple believes the iPhone is one of the most important products it has produced since the introduction of personal computers in the late 1970s.

Technology

Social Media It was called just a fad, but others insist that social networking sites have become one of the biggest shifts in human communication since the invention of the telephone. Consider

February 2011

that radio took 38 years to reach 50 million listeners, facebook took less than 9 months to reach 100 million users. Other popular social networking sites like Twitter played a pivotal role in the 2009 Iranian elections and also during the Haiti earthquake where updates helped people to be kept informed and broadcast ways to make donations. These sites are already having a massive effect on human interaction. Social networking is fundamentally changing the way the world communicates.

Economics

Global Financial Crisis The financial crisis of 2007–2010 is considered by many economists to be one of the greatest assaults on global economic stability to have occurred in three-quarters of a century. Triggered by the a liquidity shortfall in the United States banking system, which resulted in the collapse of large financial institutions, the bailout of banks by national governments and downturns in stock markets around the world. In many areas, the housing market has also suffered, resulting in numerous evictions, foreclosures and prolonged vacancies. It contributed to the failure of key businesses, declines in consumer wealth estimated in the trillions of U.S. dollars.

International Affairs

Terrorism Attacks on the United States On September 11, 2001, the world was forever changed and terrorism was given a television audience of millions. The haunting footage of two planes crashing into New York’s Twin Towers of the World Trade Center will forever be etched in the minds of those who witnessed it. Another plane was flown into the Pentagon Building in Washington DC, and the fourth plane crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Nearly 3000 people were killed in the attacks. Al-Qaeda, a terrorist group centered in the Middle East, and its leader Osama Bin Laden, were labeled responsible for the attack. American President George W. Bush began his War on Terror, which has led to major conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. The long term effects of the attacks are still being felt today, and will continue to shape the world for years to come.

Victorian Bushfires The Black Saturday bushfires were a series of destructive bushfires which burned across the Australian state of Victoria on and around Saturday February 7, 2009. During extreme weather conditions, the fires resulted in Australia’s highest ever loss of life from a bushfire. The death toll stood at 173 as a result of the fires and 414 were injured.

Politics

United States first black President The people of the United States made a huge move toward true racial equality in 2008, by electing Barack Obama – the nation’s first black President. President Obama won the Electoral College by a staggering 192 votes over his opponent Senator John McCain. The triumph of “change” was approved all around the world. President Obama had some strong ideas and plans for the future, and time will tell if he can fulfil them. Australia’s first female Prime Minister Australia has its first female Prime Minister, in the form of red-headed Julia Gillard. The 48-year-old who came under attack when she entered parliament in 1998, for being single and childless, said her being Prime Minister was an important milestone for all Australian women. Gillard, who was born in Wales and came to Australia in the 1960s with her parents, said she accepted her new role with ‘the greatest humility, resolve and enthusiasm’.

What else will the ‘00s be remembered for?

Nature

Indian Ocean Earthquake The second largest-recorded earthquake in history occurred on December 26, 2005 in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The resulting tsunami killed over 230,000 people and displaced over one million. The carnage was spread over 14 different countries, with Indonesia suffering the worst fatalities. As the tsunami hit during peek tourist season travellers – mostly from Europe, – were also killed with an estimated 9000 deaths. Regarded as the deadliest natural disaster since the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, entire cities and rural areas had been completely wiped out. The world responded by opening their wallets with relief aid estimated at over $US10 billion. Despite the efforts, the residents of the countries most affected people are still living in poverty.

EER GOGGLES

He’s our commentator on all things bloke-y… raise your hands up in the air, y’all for Mr Beer Goggles.

T

his month gets me. I don’t believe anyone should be able to tell me when to buy my girl flowers, or in fact anything at all. But if I don’t, I’ll have a four-inch stiletto heel wedged into my nether regions. It’s one of those cases of damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Guys don’t get a choice in the matter when it comes to Valentine’s Day – we either go all out and spoil her with something spectacularly romantic or we try and pretend we know nothing about the commercial world’s biggest love hoax ever. The latter option, by the way, never works so don’t even attempt to act belligerent. It ain’t gonna work for you. I’ve come up with some pretty impressive Valentine’s Day ideas in the past, despite my complete disinterest and disdain for it, I still feel pressure mounting like the entire Wallabies team in a centre scrum on my shoulders if I don’t do something a) thoughtful; b) creative; and c) expensive. I’m telling you now, you’ve got to get in early, with some good ideas. Think romance – but not the stupid cheesy kind – come up

with something you know will really impress her and buy you at least three months’ good credit for some future lads’ nights. Although for the unmarried’s, a proposal would be the ultimate championship title for your girl, that has yet to make an appearance on my list. No, I prefer to instead stick my head in the proverbial sand and go with my more conventional theories – like a mystery weekend away that she knows nothing about and has had no input into whatsoever (even the most obsessive of control freak women will like this one). Or a date where I’ve gone out and bought her a dress from her favourite shop and had it laying on the bed before she gets home, (alongside a sexy pair of hot undies too of course – has to be something in it for me!). If those options are all out of your league (or you’re just bone idol lazy) and you really don’t have the time or patience to shop, aside from dressing up as Edward Cullen (he’s that pasty dude from the Vampire movies they all go nuts over), make your own mini video using signs and music. If you can’t come up with your own words, here’s a handy hint: do a youtube search – there’s plenty to arm you with enough romance points for the month, plus put you in good steed with her friends – and let’s face it, that’s always a bonus. If all else fails, there’s always the

21

fail-proof idea of the canine/feline variety. Get her a new puppy/kitten/snake and get them to put the love message around their neck... you’ll be more romantic than Hugh Grant in Four Weddings. For all the guys out there who, like me, reckon Valentine’s day or VD for short (because rather like the disease, it causes pain and keeps coming back to haunt you) is just plain torture, meet me down at the local at five for a pint!

ow does that song by the beautiful but late Patrick Swayze go…? ‘Just a fool to believe I have anything she needs, she’s out of my league. It seems a lovely little supermodel whose name starts with J and ends with ess Hart has given the mere mortals of the male population the heads up that if they’re not gazilionaires, or genetically as blessed as a supermodel, don’t even bother going there. Leave your idle chitchat and lame one-liners to the un-pretty people. The gorgeous glamazonian blonde with the famous quirky gap-toothed smile has hit out at meager blokes trying to impress her in nightclubs stating that if you spot a hot supermodel in a bar and you want to sidle up to her and try your luck…don’t! “If you see me, or another model, in a bar wait until you are spoken to before you speak,” the blunt

LIP

With more venom in her bite than a taipan snake, she’s ready to dish out the dirt and shoot from the lip, sparing no mortal soul. Aussie beauty and Victoria’s Secret regular told Sports Illustrated in a recent interview. She went on to reiterate her point by saying the beauties will do the approaching thank you very much. “If we are interested in you, we will make the first move.” I guess when you’ve modelled for the world’s most famous lingerie brand; you get to say those sorts of things. Well you can’t blame a girl for being honest. Unfortunately I wasn’t blessed with supermodel proportions – well not unless being 5’2”, with unruly hair that resembles a horse’s tail most of the time and skin that at best, requires two inches of makeup to hide my freckles, classes as a supermodel – then no, I’m not. I’d love to think I’ve got the nerve to tell blokes not to speak unless they’re being spoken to but in GC bars, unless you happen to be Jess Hart, it might not get you very far.

Just the same, I’m not content with cheesy one-liners either. The best way to my heart is to make me laugh – and not when I’ve consumed up to my eyeballs in champagne that I think anything and everything is funny – but just natural, easy conversation. Just like a bloke would have with his mates but maybe minus the x-rated bits. And the sports talk. In the spirit of love this month as St Valentine and his chubby little buddy, Cupid aim their arrow at the loved-up couples around the nation, I’d like to say I’ll be spending it with a lovely bloke who plans to whisk me away to an idyllic island somewhere and feed me my bodyweight in Belgian chocolates...sadly, that won’t be the case. I think this Valentine’s Day, I’ll likely be spending the night with my cat, Romeo, tucked up on the sofa in front of some lame romantic movie, downing a red and feeding myself my bodyweight in chocolates! Ah but at least I’ll be happy while I’m doing it – and have total control of the remote! Happy V-day, lippers xx.

Safety features and sleek style combine to make Volvo’s new S60 a class of it’s own.

V

olvo Australia announced its all-new S60 range, which brings class leading pricing and new levels of active safety to the medium-luxury segment at a price unmatched by its competitors. The winning combination of the Volvo’s style, performance and groundbreaking safety is already winning over customers. The S60 will be available in three models: the 224kW 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo-charged petrol T6, Volvo’s recently updated 151kW 2.4-litre five-cylinder twin-turbo diesel D5, and Volvo’s new 177kW 2.0-litre four-cylinder GTDi (Gas Turbo Direct Injection) petrol engine in T5 guise. Power for both the T6 and D5 models will be distributed to all four wheels by Volvo’s All Wheel Drive system and mated to Volvo’s six-speed Adaptive Geatronic transmission. This transmission also features a neutral control function, which lowers fuel consumption and reduces emissions by automatically switching from drive to neutral when the car comes to a complete stop. The T5 model’s new engine will drive the front wheels and feature Volvo’s Powershift dualclutch automatic transmission. In addition to benefiting from class-leading standard safety features including City Safety, Advanced Stability Control (including roll over sensor and torque vectoring), Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS) and Pyrotechnical seatbelt pretensions for all passengers – the all-new Volvo S60 introduces Australian

buyers to a world first innovation. Volvo’s pedestrian detection and avoidance system will also be offered for the first time in its S60 range. Available as an option, the pedestrian detection system introduces revolutionary technology to the segment making it available for Australian customers for the first time. The system, which has been in development for over 10 years and tested in some of the world’s most densely populated cities, aims to protect our most vulnerable road users by either avoiding a collision or significantly reducing the impact speed. Using a camera and radar, the system is a driver aid designed to activate in the event of driver distraction. In takes just 0.5 seconds for the system to detect a pedestrian and determine whether or not it is in danger of being hit by the oncoming car. And an audible alert and visual display on the windscreen is activated to alert the driver. If the driver fails to respond full braking power is applied. This entire process takes under one second. At speeds of up to 35 km/h, an accident with a pedestrian can be avoided, while at higher speeds the focus is on reducing the impact speed. Put simply, it is the difference between life and death. The S60 will also introduce Volvo’s new infotainment system, featuring a five or seven inch multi-function screen, full iPod and Bluetooth connectivity with steering wheel control and voice activation.

The All-New Volvo S60 Pricing* S60 T5 $51,950 S60 D5 AWD $57,950 S60 T6 AWD $64,950 *Pricing does not include dealer delivery and on road costs. February 2011

FAME

ale GForce She’s landed herself a new love and a new role hosting one of Aussie’s favourite reality fashion shows, Project Runway. This year is her year as model, ambassador and sometime radio announcer Megan Gale takes the world by storm.

hat’s a girl to do but work her way through a broken heart? Not that you’d know she had one. It’s a case of a new year, a new man and a new job for one of the country’s favourite models, Megan Gale, with confirmation she’ll be stepping back on the runway this year– but not as a catwalk model but to host her first fashion TV gig. Rather than wallowing in her own heartbreak pity, just weeks after calling it quits on her fouryear relationship with renowned funnyman Andy Lee, the glamazon has already moved on, embarking on a new summer romance with hot new beau, Carlton ruckman Shaun Hampson. The couple no doubt celebrating her landing the top spot as the frontwoman of Foxtel’s reality series Project Runway Australia. Scaling back her catwalk commitments to pursue a film career, the David Jones darling will step into the designer shoes of the show’s former host Kristy Hinze, who has departed the show to complete a university degree and start a family with her US billionaire husband Jim Clark. Having worked almost two decades in the www.getitmagazine.com.au

fashion industry, Megan says her new career prospects are propelling her career. “I am so excited to announce that I’ll be hosting and working on Project Runway Australia…I feel it is something that sits extremely well with what I do,” she says. Loved by the lens, Megan has always had a natural ease with live television and will raise the profile of the popular fashion show. “Megan’s extensive international fashion credentials and star status, along with her down-to-earth Australian sensibilities make her a perfect fit to take Project Runway Australia into a fresh new phase,” says Foxtel’s executive director. Megan’s signing may also force a reshuffle of the show’s judging panel, with Myeraligned designer Jayson Brunsdon likely to be overlooked for the new series in favour of David Jones favourite and celebrity fashion designer Alex Perry. Sharp-tongued Perry is expected to continue his role on Australia’s Next Top Model, impressing Runway’s producers with his brash personality and no-feelings-spared critiques. hmet RELATIONSHIPS

ow we

A

The internet, blind dates and matchmaking all played a part in the budding romance of these loved-up couples.

Louise and Frank Forrester. At 43, I was living the life I had wanted since a young girl. In my lifetime, I worked as a model, actress, casting director, assistant director, travelled the world, mixed and mingled with interesting glamorous people and owned my own house. Life was great except for one thing – each night I was coming home to my cat, Minx. Although Minx was a wonderful listener he was not really interested in my various tales of adventure. I realised in my 43rd year, it was time to take the big leap and find a man to witness the next chapter in my life. But where does a woman of my age meet the man of her dreams? Not at nightclubs and you can forget dinner parties –single women aren’t often invited to those,

Sarah and Luke Patching. It was a chance meeting through a mutual friend that first brought Sarah and Luke Patching together. At the time, Luke was living in Canberra, looking for a sea change and decided to move to the Gold Coast and go into a business partnership with his friend. What he didn’t know was that what awaited him was the most important partnership of his life.

especially ones with all couples. I decided on a plan. Now of course at 43, you find yourself settled in your ways, and a never-married-43-year-old woman is a rare thing, so I decided to take to the internet and gave myself a year for my search. I joined a popular Australian dating service... that’s another story but let’s just say after 11 months of meeting various dates online, I was

About a month before he moved up to the Coast, Sarah and Luke had became virtual friends on MySpace and their communication escalated to emailing on a daily basis. Each day brought new excitement and anticipation about meeting in person. Within an hour of hopping off the plane to his new life on the Gold Coast, Luke arranged to see Sarah and they met in person. “I wouldn’t say it was love at first sight, but I was pretty impressed with how tall he was! I’m 6’1” and Luke’s 6’5” but within a few weeks it was definitely love and everything else fell into place!” Sarah says. Both agree that fate and the right timing had a part to play in their meeting. There had been many opportunities over the years to meet but their paths had yet to cross. Now happily married aNd coming up to their second wedding anniversary, both Sarah and Luke are excited about the next chapter in their lives and starting a family of their own. www.getitmagazine.com.au

Andrea and Callan Gunn Maybe it was the music, the mood or the melody that first brought Andrea and Callan Gunn together. A chance meeting at the Super Jesus concert at the old Playroom at Palm Beach united these two live music lovers. Andrea – on a night out to celebrate her 22nd birthday thought she’d had all her presents that year, but as fate would have it, their was one present still waiting in the form of handsome wakeboarding champ, Callan. Andrea and Callan struck up a conversation and spent the remainder of the night with a little help of the crowd nudging closer together. “After talking for a while we realised we both had a lot in common – especially a love

of live music” Andrea says. In the days that followed the initial meeting, Callan had to leave the country to compete in a wakeboarding competition in America. Phone calls were exchanged and despite the distance, their relationship strengthened as both Callan and Andrea had the chance to get to know each other. Upon Callan’s return to Australia, the couple picked up were they left off and married in a beachside ceremony with the couple’s son, Jayden, as best man at Rainbow Bay in 2004. Both Andrea and Callan conclude, “If it wasn’t for our mutual love of alternate live music we would have never bumped into each other that night. Music helped us to find not only each other, but a best friend to enjoy live concerts with for life.” JAM MON/0029

disheartened. Maybe it was because I was on the Gold Coast but I seemed to attract a lot of sad men, not one to give up and still having another month of my plan left, I decided to enlarge my search and look offshore. Feeling quite miserable about the whole internet dating thing, I signed up for a month on an international site. The gates opened on intelligent, secure men looking for love from various countries, but the one that caught my eye was a handsome Frenchman called Franck who happened to be living in Tanzania. He had been married before and divorced for 20 years, and had been in Africa building up his own business. With no time for love, he was also on a search for a partner to share his life, and by the luck of the Gods and perfect timing, we connected. We spoke every day on Skype and after three weeks he came to Australia to meet me. With bated breath I met him at Brisbane airport, and it was then I realised this was the man. My family knew a special man was coming to Australia and that I could quite possibility be leaving for a new life in Africa, so of course they were nervous. But once they met him they soon realised he was the one. Within a month, I packed up my life and moved to Tanzania, and eight months later we were married. I have never been happier. Our life in Africa is filled with love, we share our good fortune with various charities, travel on safaris throughout Tanzania, and also to Europe and the Middle East. I am living a truly blessed life with a man I adore, and will always be grateful for what I have. If there is one thing I know, it’s that there is someone out there for everyone, but they could be in a far away place...thankfully with technology, we have the opportunity to meet them.

If you and your partner have been trying to fall pregnant, rest assured you’re not alone. Thousands of Australian couples have reaped the benefits of IVF treatment. Home life was blissfully normal for this local housewife and mum-ofthree. Too normal. But when she decided to add another dimension, the consequences that followed spelt the end of her marriage. www.getitmagazine.com.au

T

oday’s modern woman no longer earns a scarlet letter for bearing a child out of wedlock, separation is not only synonymous with scandal, and it’s not often surprising to learn the end of a marriage is spurned on by the involvement of a third person. But even in our now sexually-liberated culture, the home is still off limits, as if protected by a formidable force field with the marital bed remaining a sacred object. And sharing that marital bed intimately with someone other than a spouse is always going to have dire consequences. At first, all housewife *Danica wanted was a little excitement. For this brunette beauty who had it all – stunning good looks, money, a wealthy husband and a house by the sea – the mundane routine of everyday family life soon became too intolerable to bear. But when this 38-year-old mum-of-three went ahead with her fantasy and invited another couple into her marriage, she paid a hefty price for her indiscretions, and her once happy family life she dubbed as ‘boring’ was soon in tatters. Danica admits to often daydreaming about experimenting sexually and thought her husband would be tempted too. “Brad and I had been together for nearly 15 years and had met when I was just 23. We had a comfortable life, travelled, enjoyed fine restaurants and didn’t have to want for much, but I was beginning to feel that excitement in the bedroom was lagging and I yearned for something new and exciting,” she says timidly. At a dinner party one night with some close friends – Elizabeth a striking blonde, and her husband, Dane, a respected architect – she found herself embroiled in a sexually-charged conversation relating to swinging. Maybe it was the alcohol, or the familiarity of knowing each other so well. Danica recalls all four of them nodding in an unspoken agreement that the idea of a swinging was, well, quite arousing. It never went any further. Over the next few weeks, Danica found herself recounting the conversation over dinner that night and how receptive the other couple had been to the imposition. A few February 2011

weeks later, the couples were at a wedding and once again found themselves in the throws of discussing wife-swapping. “It may have been the alcohol, or the fact that we were at a hotel away from home, the kids and responsibilities, that we took it to the next level...” she recalls. “After the formal part of the wedding wrapped up, we all found ourselves in a spa pool together. Things got pretty heated and soon we were kissing and fooling around in the spa together. I had always been attracted to Dane and now it was almost like a leave pass on my marriage...I was loving it. This was the excitement I needed.” After the spa incident things went back to normal until Danica bumped into her architect friend one afternoon at a work function in Brisbane. She recalls things being different between the two of them and the chemistry that had been bubbling away for years was palpable. What Danica didn’t realise at the

down around me. I’ve been off work, having counselling and the stress has seen me gain10 kilos.” What started out rather innocently as harmless flirtation that should never have gone any further, turned into emotional destruction of her family life for Danica. “One lesson I have since learnt through my many nights of soul-searching and hours in therapy is, I wish I addressed the difference between fantasy and reality before all this happened. The great thing about fantasies is you get all the positives, the excitement, the kink and the creativity without the negatives emotional stress and jealousy of an actual third party. Just because you fantasise about another person outside of your marriage, doesn’t mean that you should allow it to develop in real life.” While extra martial affairs cause major problems between couples, affairs created out of lust will often result in chaos.

It may have been the alcohol, or the fact that we were at a hotel away from home, the kids and responsibilities, that we took it to the next level... time was that the affair she was about to embark on would result in the crushing demise of her marriage and comfortable life. “I stared to meet Dane in secret and what started out as a little fooling around turned into a full-blown affair. We would secretly meet up at rendesvouz points around the city, which made it all the more exciting. But we weren’t cautious enough and our cover was soon blown. A few months later, my husband became suspicious and found texts on my phone. He was so furious, I’ve never seen him so angry. It didn’t take long before he moved out. “Before this all happened, I was really happy – well I thought I was,” she says. “I was in love, had a lovely home and three beautiful kids, but when Brad found the texts and uncovered the affair, my world came tumbling

32

The outcome has also been devastating for Danica’s husband, Brad, who feels lost, embarrassed and deflated. Not only did he lose the tight family unit he cherished, but also the loyalty of his wife and good friends. “What happened that night in the spa and in the months that followed has torn my life apart and left my kids without a secure family. I wish I’d never had the idea,” she adds wistfully. Danica hopes others would think before they find themselves in a similar situation. “As long as you and your partner make it clear it’s not a reality but simply a tool to increase intimacy because the reality of an affair is no one’s fantasy.” *Names in this article have been changed.

This year, more than 1200 Australian women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 800 will die from the disease. That’s one woman every 10 hours. As part of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, three brave women share their own stories of survival.

Sheila Gavin, 65 Ovarian cancer twice.

S

heila Gavin, 65, from Beaudesert, has had ovarian cancer twice over the past five years, and now says she is lucky to be alive. “The first time I was diagnosed, it came as a complete shoc,” says Sheila. “I had just retired from my job in Sydney and my husband and I had moved up to Queensland into our new house and what we thought would be our fabulous retirement. “I had gone for a routine ultrasound for an unrelated condition concerning my abdomen and they found a lump. I was immediately referred to a gynaecologist who said it was a very large tumour on one of my ovaries. It took another six days of various tests before they confirmed it was ovarian cancer.

February 2011

“It was just before Christmas and I felt like my world was falling apart. Plus my husband, David, was a real mess, and couldn’t help but think the worst. “I managed to hold it together as best I could and realised it explained why I had put on so much weight around my middle! And also why I had been rushing off to the toilet every five minutes – something I had no idea was a sign of ovarian cancer. In fact, like many people I knew nothing about the disease, compared with say, breast cancer and I felt very ill-prepared for what was to come.” Sheila went on to have major surgery to remove both her ovaries and some of her lymph glands, but unfortunately it wasn’t the end of the problem, as the cancer was discovered again in 2009. This time it appeared as a smaller tumour which had attached itself to the abdominal wall. “Again, I had to go through another round of surgery, this time with much of my abdominal wall removed in the process.” The surgery was followed by a session of regular chemotherapy which she says was certainly no picnic. “It caused me a lot of pain in the abdominal region which was very debilitating, plus I lost my sense of taste and my fingers went numb. “It’s been a year-and-a-half since the chemo ended and although I seem to be fine now, there are certainly no guarantees. I just want women to know ovarian cancer can hit any woman, so if they have a couple of the warning symptoms they should get themselves checked out.”

36

Ros Gil l, 64 Ovarian cancer eight times.

P

alm Beach resident Ros Gill, 64, has been unlucky enough to have cancer eight times. Alongside breast and abdominal cancer, Ros has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, twice. With no family history of any form of cancer, Ros says the doctors told her she could well be ‘simply the start of the gene’ for cancer in her family. “It has to start somewhere I guess, and it started with me,”she says. The former aged-care worker retired in 2008, following a long-run of cancer which she says was totally and utterly draining. “The strange thing was that both times with the ovarian cancer, I never saw it coming. There were no real signs. “It wasn’t until I completely swelled up around my middle in the space of just 48 hours, that I began to get really terrified. I just ballooned! I was getting very big and a subsequent scan showed that I had tumours on both of my ovaries.” Ros was forced to have parts of her bowel, stomach, pelvis, abdomen and appendix surgically removed in a bid to eliminate the cancerous tissue. “It’s very debilitating. One of my worst memories was coming out of theatre last year with a tube up my nose and down through me to get rid of the excess bile. The pain was excruciating but I trusted the surgeons to do what they had to do and thankfully I was given the all clear again by April.” But Ros has been told not to be too optimistic. “The doctors have been honest with me that the cancer will probably come back again within another five years or so,” she adds forlornly.

ged just 33 at the time, Lisa Roper from Burleigh Heads, was 12-weeks pregnant when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. “It was lucky I was pregnant at the time, as otherwise I would never have had the scan that detected the cyst which had appeared on my ovary,” Lisa says. “It didn’t seem too worrying at the time, but by the time I had another scan at 18-weeks, the doctors could see the cyst had grown and would need to be removed.” An operation to remove the cyst at 20-weeks found it to be late stage cancer. “It was a terrible shock. My husband Miles and I were supposed to be enjoying the pregnancy of our first child and now here I was saddled with cancer – the last thing in the world I had expected. There were a lot of difficult decisions to be made and the thought that I could die was just awful.” A decision was made to deliver the couple’s baby girl, Charlotte, at 32-weeks, so that an exploratory procedure could be done to see whether the cancer had spread. “Luckily it didn’t seem like it had spread but I still needed to have a pretty intense round of chemotherapy, which was very debilitating www.getitmagazine.com.au

while also looking after a newborn.” Unfortunately another CT scan during the chemo picked up a second cyst on the other one of Lisa’s ovaries and another round of surgery led to the cyst bursting during its removal. “That was what then made me go in for a full hysterectomy. My survival instincts really kicked in and I’d resigned myself to the thought of not being able to have any more children. But I also realised I was so lucky to have my beautiful little Charlotte.” Lisa, now 38, has just celebrated being cancer-free for five years and says she has never felt better. “At the time I was going through it, I went through a lot of negative thought processes and kept asking myself ‘why me?’ “I also found it difficult that many of the ladies I met at the support groups were about 20 or 30 years older than me; that was hard. “But now I look back and think that this has really made me appreciate every minute of my life. People should find out more about ovarian cancer and realise that these days, it does not always mean a death sentence.” Words: Louise Durack

COVERSTORY

eading A lady She’s swapping her days in heels and swimsuits trawling catwalks, for a career in presenting. And just like other beauty queens before her, former Miss Universe Australia Laura Dundovic is bound to steal the show.

I

t’s a moment most girls dream of: beaming lights on stage, heart racing, palms clammy and an almost unbearable silence filling the auditorium. Your name is called; the audience roars and a shower of confetti falls as the satin Miss Universe Australian sash is placed around your shoulders… and that dream came true for Laura Dundovic. And now the 2008 beauty pageant winner is on her way to becoming one of Australia’s most successful models. The five-foot-eleven beauty has grown to be a feature favourite and runway regular – her natural beauty and charisma has seen her appear on magazine covers and signing on as a brand ambassador for some of Australia’s leading labels. Now hosting new Australian reality show, Dating in the Dark, Laura has successfully navigated the often-challenging path of adjusting between model and TV personality. Born in 1987, Laura grew up in Dural in Sydney’s north-west and admits she’s always been tomboy at heart spending her childhood mucking about with her brothers. “As a kid, I was a tomboy. I’ve got two younger brothers [and] I lived next door to three boys, so I spent my whole time growing up playing sport…other than that, I’ve played touch football, hockey, basketball, everything really, you name it,” she says. After she finished high school, Laura went on to study Psychology at university in Sydney. Her introduction to the modelling realm came as she entered the third year into her degree Febraury 2011

when she tried her luck and entered the 2008 Miss Universe Australia contest – the same one that had launched Jennifer Hawkins’ career four years earlier. Going head-to-head with 28 other hopefuls, Laura was singled out by the judges in what event director Deborah Miller describes as having the highest standard of competition ever, with all contestants having charisma, beauty, and intelligence – and she says there was something about Laura that caught their eye from the start. “She impressed everyone with her charm. I think the organisers liked her because she is intelligent and she would represent the competition well at official engagements. She has natural beauty [and] she is so down to earth that I don’t think she had realised how well she would do,” Deborah says. And the tomboy beauty had it all – the right look, the right presence, and the right personality – that saw Laura crowned Miss Universe Australia. But going through to the Miss Universe titles was nothing short of a miracle in Laura’s eyes. “I went into it and I’d never done a pageant before. I hadn’t even really had the chance to think about it all, but it’s probably one of the best things I’ve done. I’m very happy,” she smiles. With her long limbs, golden skin and beaming smile, Laura elegantly embodied all the elements of an Australian girl-nextdoor and with her family cheering her on, the glamazon paraded a flowing organza frock down the Miss Universe catwalk. The gown – designed by Jayson Brunsdon – proved a safer option than offerings from the years prior. Australian Miss Universe contestants have a chequered history when it comes to the selection of attire for the section of the parade known as “national costume”. Jennifer Hawkins may have got off lightly in a strapless number but her successors, Michelle Guy and Kim Busteed weren’t so lucky. A controversial Bondi lifesaver number and an outback-themed frock complete with Crocodile Dundee-style hat. Jayson says he wanted to do something different and highlight Australian nature. “Rather than drawing inspiration from Australian characters, like surfers and shearers, I want to express the natural elements of the country – the colour and shape to create a beautiful sweeping gown that comments on the sea, sand and desert.” Laura also modelled lingerie, shapewear, swimwear and sportswear and turned heads in a red beaded evening gown by Connie Simonetti. The young model soon made national headlines, coming 10th place. Laura vowed to follow in the footsteps of her idol, Australia’s most successful contestant, 2004 Miss Universe winner, Jennifer Hawkins…and so she has. During the years that have followed, Laura’s career has seen her jetting around www.getitmagazine.com.au

the globe on modelling assignments and for a while, juggling her university workload and modelling, before deferring to pursue her career full-time. With the world at her feet, Laura’s success continued, becoming the first Australian face of international shoe label Steve Madden as well as the official ambassador for both the Spring and Autumn racing carnivals for the Sydney Turf Club. Opening Sydney Fashion Festival for Charlie Brown in 2008, led to Laura being signed as the new face of the leading fashion label and she’s set to make the most of the opportunity. “I wouldn’t have dreamed that I would have become the face of a brand this soon,” the thrilled 21-year-old says. Now, she’ll host Foxtel’s local production of matchmaking reality series, Dating In The Dark. “I’m so excited by Dating in the Dark’s fun approach. The show is a social experiment which will certainly test a lot of theories about love. “I have had my fair share of ups and downs in relationships so I will be just as curious as everyone else to see how it all turns out. I’m

really hoping we can create some long-lasting matches.” The beauty queen is being touted as the next Jennifer Hawkins as she was asked to step into her idol’s shoes, literally, when she took to the catwalk as part of the G’Day USA gala in Los Angeles last month. It’s a far cry from her days as a disheveled tomboy, as the Dural darling was joined by Jessica Hart as a Myer flag waver. “I tried on Jen’s shoes today and they did not quite fit me. I have got man feet,” Laura laughs. “I was in LA in July and fell in love with the place, so to be going over there with Myer and working will be great. “The nerves have not hit me yet [but] I know it is going to be great fun. For me, it’s exciting to be stepping up with Myer,” she says. With the beauty, the brains and what appear to be the makings of a stellar career in television and celebrity, there’s nothing holding this Aussie beauty back. Words Adele Rowlands-Dealey

I went into it and I’d never done a pageant before. It’s probably one of the best things I’ve ever done. Getting prepped for her role as presenter on Foxtel’s new Dating in the Dark.

uch is the fabric of former Moulin Rouge star Shay Stafford’s life. Her tenderly-depicted debut autobiography Memoirs of a Showgirl details the highs, lows, loves and brushes with fame encompassing her illustrious dancing career. Documenting her incredible journey, spanning 12 years – from the humble beginnings of suburban Brisbane to the lofty heights as the lead in the infamous Lido and Moulin Rouge shows in Paris. For a fresh-faced young, innocent Shay was living every dancer’s dream. In Memoirs of a Showgirl, we see her life balanced by the trials, tribulations and isolation that comes with living on the other side of the globe. Through her personal tale, she relays the unique experiences living and working alike provide a rich backdrop in which Paris, the city of romance, truly comes to life. The curtain is pulled from the glitz and glamour of the Moulin Rouge and Lido, where the rise to lead dancer is fraught with bullies, blisters, bunions and bare breasts. As Shay recounts what it’s really like to walk in the custom-made high heel shoes of a legendary Paris showgirl with intense honesty, humour and hindsight. After 12 years in the limelight, the road to retirement was fraught with partying, heartache and friendships forged to last a lifetime. The diversity of her career never fails to interest; from her days modelling Cartier jewellery to a masked Arabian princess who was more interested in what she ate than the divine jewellery that adorned her neck, to knocking back vodkas with Leonardo Dicaprio and his crew while nursing a bloodied and sliced finger. Her biography is universally appealing in a way that will have you laughing, crying and cheering her along as she dances her way through it all. Most importantly this is a story that has a happy ending with the happilymarried-mother-of-two heading home to Australia. Tell us about your childhood... I was raised in Tarragindi, Brisbane. up in an old Queenslander home with my parents and two brothers. We all went to the local Catholic school, Mary Immacualte Primary, and I attended our Lady’s College. I did a year of dancing, at six, and then

I danced the principal role on my final night in May 2009, when I was 14-weeks pregnant with my second child. dabbled in a bit of netball, swimming and athletics before going back to dance at the age of 10. Then I was addicted and did jazz, tap, ballet, singing, exams, eistedfods, shopping centre pantomimes...the lot! We camped on the Gold Coast for all of our holidays. I loved the beach, my trampoline, my cousins and riding my bike in the local bush with my brothers. A total dag from TarragindI! What was it like to perform as a principle dancer in the Moulin Rouge? After finishing high school at 17, I danced at the Tivoli in Brisbane for two years. Then I performed at Jupiters Casino in two shows. I also taught dance and went on to do three contracts in Asia. After three months in an Elvis show in Japan, I flew to Paris to visit an old friend who was performing at the Moulin Rouge. I had sent him my CV and photos and the ballet mistress asked me to audition. I passed the audition and was offered a contract the next day. I worked hard and became the dance captain within three months, and then learned the soloist and principal roles. After three years, I was ready for a new challenge and applied to the Lido and was offered a place as a Bluebell. I worked there for nine years. Slowly, I worked my way up the heirarchy and went from chorus girl to placement principal and captain. I danced the principal role on my final night in May 2009, when I was 14-weeks pregnant with my second child.

42

What highlights stand out in your career? Dancing the lead role for the first time at the Lido. My mum was watching and it was so emotional for me. All my dreams as a young dancer came true in that moment. What is a typical day in the life of a showgirl like...diet, exercise, excitement? Sleep in until midday. Wake up and go to rehearsals or the gym, or out to lunch with friends, or to French lessons. Have an early dinner around 5pm and then get ready for work. Arrive at the theatre at 7.30pm, do make-up, hair, body make-up, warm up and rehearse any changes, 9.30pm first show, 11pm quick break to freshen up, eat (usually cake as it’s always someone’s birthday) then do it all again for second show at 11.30pm. 2am shower and change. Go out for dinner and drinks with castmates, or home to apartment for some down time. I usually go to sleep around 5am. What has living and working in Paris taught or you. Do you believe it has changed you in any way? Living in Paris gave me the opportunity to learn a beautiful language and an appreciation for a fascinating culture. I love French food and their respect for food. Working at the Moulin Rouge and Lido taught me the discipline of hard work and tenacity. Twelve shows a week, in 9cm heels and heavy costumes with a big smile, no matter what! I don’t think my time www.getitmagazine.com.au

STRAP there changed me. I matured of course and met my husband. Together, we have two beautiful little Parisian/Australian children. They have changed my lifestyle but I still feel like me. Is your stage persona different to the everyday Shay Stafford? Of course. We spend at least an hour preparing to take to the stage as someone else. I played the role of the Parisian showgirl for nearly 13 years. It was great to be transformed every night with lashes and red lips and wild feathers. During the day I was in trackies with my hair in a pony tail and no makeup. These days I’m a mum playing in the park and shopping at Woolies. Not so glamourous but much more challenging. Are you a natural performer or quite different in real life? I think I was when I was younger. I’m a little more mellow now and content to leave the spotlight to the younger ones. As a mother, would you encourage your children to follow their dreams and follow in their mother’s footsteps? Definitely to follow their dreams. My parents always supported me with my ambitions even when they took me so far away. That can’t have been easy. My kids love to bop along with music but they are only one and twoyears-old so who knows what their passions wll be. What inspired you to write a book about your life as a showgirl? I wanted to share my story to show people the hard work and determination that goes on behind the scenes in Paris cabaret. And also as a tribute to all of the wonderul people I met during my time on the stage. It’s also a treasure for me to have to remind me of my other life. What advice would you give aspiring young dancers coming up through the ranks? To do as much ballet as possible. I wish that I had done more. You can pick up styles along the way but having technique will make everything easier. Also to develop a thick skin early on. It’s a tough business. Get as much experience as you can and remember that while you may miss out on one job, you could be perect for the next. Memoirs of a Showgirl, by Shay Stafford. Words: Ingrid Bonnor

couples

A

It is the time for love right now, so we check out Hollywood’s sexiest, most loved-up couples. They’re so hot they’ve even got their own couple names!

Prince William and Kate Middleton Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie The Brangelina saga may well be one of the most controversial and disected celebrity love stories of our time. It all began with an onscreen chemistry during filming of Mr & Mrs Smith. Rumours soon emerged claiming Brad was spending more time with Angelina than with his wife at the time, Jennifer Aniston. Brad and Jen announced their separation and subsequent divorce in 2006. Then barely three months later, Angelina announced she was pregnant with Brad’s baby – the second in their brood of six.

David and Victoria Beckham Congratulations is in order for Posh and Becks with news they’re expecting to increase their brood by one. Victoria’s spokeswoman, Jo Milloy, told reporters last month: “David and Victoria Beckham are delighted to confirm they are expecting their fourth child in the summer.” Already parents to three boys – Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz – the beautiful Brits have often commented that they’d like to add a daughter to their genetically-blessed Beckham bunch.

There’s a little fairytale magic in how Kate found her prince. Since the day she and William met in their freshman year at the Scottish university St. Andrews, she has been pursuing her prince, with her heart, mind and soul. Even before that, young Kate had picked out William as the man she wanted to marry – right down to taping posters of him to her bedroom walls. The college sweethearts went public with their engagement last November and now, we’re saving the date for a spring wedding as the most glamourous couple the world has seen in a century gets set to marry on April 29 at Westminster Abbey in London. Just as William’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and her mother did before him.

Ashton Kutcher & Demi Moore A hopeless romantic, Ashton admits he’s prepared to put himself “through hell” for love revealing he once drove all the way to another country just to spend an hour with his superstar wife, Demi. “I think [it’s] the most romantic thing that I’ve done…so it was literally not sleeping for two days, going through hell, just to see somebody for an hour,” he told US magazine Parade.Their romance was made official by their secret wedding in Beverly Hills on September 24, 2005. Despite cheating allegations and rumours of marriage problems, the pair continue to show nothing but love. February 2011

Ellen DeGeneres & Portia De Rossi Ellen and Portia complete each other. “I could say the same thing I’ve said in every relationship: I’m happy. But there’s happiness and there’s love, and then there’s completion,” says Ellen. Dating since December 2004, Portia told reporters they instantly sparked but didn’t act on it right away. “I ran into Ellen at a photo shoot and she took my breath away. That had never happened to me in my life, where I [experienced] all those things you hear about in songs and read about in poetry.”

Beyonce Knowles and Jay-Z Beyoncé’s song “Single Ladies” is an Internet hit among dancing toddlers and now, rumour has it the crazy-in-love duo are trying for a tot of their own. That’s according to B’s notoriously tight-lipped hubby Jay-Z who spilled the baby beans late last year. The rapper let it slip that children were high on the pair’s priority list. That’s big news from hiphop’s sneakiest couple, who wed secretly on a Tribeca rooftop and rarely even wear their own wedding rings in public. It’s also a change in attitude for Beyoncé, who admitted last year that while she was interested in motherhood, she was in no hurry to hit the delivery room.

Katy Perry and Russell Brand In his latest book, My Booky Wook 2: This Time It’s Personal, Russell describes how he first fell in love the moment Katy threw a plastic bottle at his head. “Thud. Ouch. The bottle hit me right on the head and, although it was plastic, it was half full, or half empty, depending on your perspective, and it hurt. ‘Hey, Brand!’ she cockily cawed. ‘Come on brain, let’s go’, I thought, but my brain wasn’t working properly, I think perhaps because of the bottle. Plus my stomach felt odd. Sort of sick. ‘Got you on the head there, huh?’ she said. ‘Kind of an easy target, it’s big and you’ve got that ridiculous hair’.”

Miranda Kerr &Orlando Bloom

A congratulations is in order for this blooming pair with news last month confirming the birth of their beautiful baby boy, Flynn. Miranda married her Hollywood heartthrob in a secret Caribbean wedding ceremony in July, while whispers of a baby bump circulated. A month later, she finally announced parenthood was pending in an exclusive interview with Spanish Vogue. Then rumours of Miranda giving birth to her first child sent the nation into a frenzy last month… again. A false alarm had us squirming on Boxing Day, but a family member verified the Aussie supermodel went into labour in the wee hours of January 7.

As engagements go, they don’t come more golden glitzy than this. Start with a whopping $262,000 diamond engagement ring. Then check into an exclusive luxury lodge in NZ, before boarding a private helicopter ride for a picnic. A magazine photo shoot rumoured to be worth a few hundred is always a nice bonus but the best part comes when your beloved gets down on one knee and presents you with a box so big you assume it’s a necklace.

Still refusing to confirm their off-screen romance, a spy caught the pair shooting the honeymoon scene for Breaking Dawn on a beach in Brazil and posted the footage on YouTube. In it, the newlywed Bella and Edward share an intense conversation before pouncing on each other. R-Patz told UK Marie Claire, when he and Kristen film kissing scenes he forgets the cameras are rolling, adding he sometimes gets so carried away it’s only when the kiss finishes that his mind registers there’s a set of people around. www.getitmagazine.com.au

inally we have a colour explosion on the red carpet! The reign of the beige dress is over. Colour-blocking is the latest headline trend so it was satisfying to see the stars at the Annual Golden Globe awards in Los Angeles taking a stroll in fashion’s fast lane of colour. Snooker table green was a Globes micro trend, as were red hot numbers, followed closely by shades of sunset orange. Christina Hendricks – curvy redhead from hit TV show Mad Men – wore a striking red ruffled Romona Keveza one-shoulder gown channeling Jessica Rabbit with her all natural curves. January Jones looked ravishing in a Versace red number that showed off her cleavage, and paired perfectly with the old Hollywood glamour hair and matching red pout. Sofia Vergara of Modern Family fame was a firecracker in a figure-hugging Vera Wang gown with fitted bodice and contrasting black belt. Elisabeth Moss got the green memo, but while the strapless green Donna Karan number was flattering, she played it safe with classic lines. Angelina Jolie slinked into the ceremony in a emerald green long-sleeve Versace. She successfully overcome her addiction to black and channeled the ‘30s without resorting to the overdone vintage Hollywood glam look. Mila Kunis may play second to Natalie Portman in the award-winning Black Swan but she was second-to-none in her strikingly draped Vera Wang gown. The actress’s single shoulder gown was sleek and the up style hair added an extra touch of grace. Kyra Sedgwick wore an unmistakable Emilio Pucci chiffon dress with a ruffled neckline and matching gold accessories. Billy Joel’s ex-wife Katie Lee wore a bright beaded Christian Dior gown and Lara Spencer radiated in emerging designer Angel Sanchez.

Get it’s hair guru Amanda Higl says follow Hollywood’s lead for your wedding hairstyle.

T

he silly season has passed in its usual cyclonic fashion. So now it’s time to bring on the love. The air has a magical vibe as hot summer breezes bring romance and of course, Valentine’s Day. As Saint Valentine’s cupids shoot their love arrows, some of you loved up ladies might just be planning your wedding day... At this time of the year, brides are beginning to get organised for their up and coming, long-dreamt-of big day. Wedding hair and makeup can be a daunting thing for some and heavily embraced by others but I do have some HOT TIPS and TRENDS to help you out. Check out websites – especially ours... Spend hours trawling through websites, it will pay off in the end – think of it as research. Book early – Securing your favourite hair stylist and makeup artist is important – so be sure to do it early. Choose someone whose work you have checked out (back to the website), someone you like and of course someone who is efficient and will look after you and what you want. Have a trial, take pictures and do Hair and Makeup on the same day – There are two ways to do it; before you secure your booking or after. I can’t stress enough how important it is to have a trial. You may think you will be fine on the day to explain what www.getitmagazine.com.au

you want but the lines of communication are sometimes a little fuzzy with butterflies in your tummy. To avoid any unnecessary moments, have a trial! You can try a few different looks if you are not sure and then go home and try it out with your dress. The look will be complete. Pay for quality; it is your hair, your face, your look – Skimp on something else, not you! I have seen too many girls spend on the details no one even notices and skimp on hair and makeup and OMG, it does not pay off! Hair that stays all night and makeup that lasts through a multitude of conditions needs to be done by a professional with experience who is used to working with the camera and is actively in the industry and up-to-date with the latest products and techniques. 2011 wedding hair trends Well girls the first place I suggest heading for some wedding hair inspiration is always the red carpet. Why? Because these ladies have it all going on! The fashion world seems to be getting a little sick of the natural middle part for an event, HOT TIP: keep an eye on

51

things, I anticipate general trends will follow in a couple of seasons time, which is nice for formalising. Ninety per cent of the hair do’s I have stumbled across on my hours of research for the latest trends have a side part, not too deep just a little more than off centre. While a bit of natural wave and tousled kick is still very much prevalent, the side parting makes the styles more glamorous, more tailored and more polished. It really is heading into a classic look with a romantic twist. Curls are always in, it just depends on what form they come in for the season. The curl used for the up-dos are very much done with a 1920’s edge and messed up just a little, while the curls left down are smooth and glamorous. Remember: Stress less – it is supposed to be a fun-filled, happy day. Be smart and be organised. If you have good people looking after you, the rest will fall into place, all you have to do is be there and enjoy. his month, we feature New Zealand’s most awardwinning winery, Villa Maria. Founded in 1961 by its current owner, Sir George Fistonich, Villa Maria Estate is now seen as an iconic New Zealand winemaker. The Estate has two facilities – one in the hub of metropolitan Auckland – and the other in Marlborough. Grapes are sourced from some of the best sites in the nation’s top regions; Marlborough and Waipara in the South Island and Hawkes Bay, Gisborne and Auckland in the North. Having been at the pointy end of New Zealand winemaking for over 30 years, in 2009, Villa Maria took the title of New Zealand Winery of the Year at London’s International Wine and Spirit Competition; named by Australian publication

Winestate, as New Zealand Wine Producer of the Year for the eleventh time in 12 years, and was named Winery of the Year at the Hawkes Bay Wine Awards. The Auckland winery, which officially opened in 2005, lies at the base of an extinct volcano, half of which is planted with

Our picks:

Cha rdon nay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir and Merlot. The Marlborough winery, based in one of New Zealand’s premium grape-growing regions, produces Villa Maria’s Marlborough harvest from vineyards and contract growers throughout the region.

Villa Maria Private Bin Pinot Noir 2008 Gold Medal – Royal Hobart Show 2010 Fruit is selected from a number of vineyards in Marlborough. All the vineyards are low-yielding, shoot and fruit-thinned, and leaf-plucked to ensure flavour ripeness. This wine has a perfumed bouquet of ripe cherries and raspberry fruits – all hallmarks of Marlborough Pinot Noir. On the palate, the wine displays ripe fruit with complex savoury and spice elements. Soft, silky, fine-grained tannins provide structure and definition, yet also allow for the wine to be consumed young.

Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc 2010 Trophy – Best Sauvignon Blanc Royal Perth Show 2010. Fruit was sourced from vineyards across the Marlborough region. Attention was paid to vine health and cropping levels to give the vine the best chance to optimise the season and develop strong, clean flavours. Bursting with flavours of gooseberry, passionfruit, fresh citrus, melon and nettle-dominant herbaceous aromas. The wine has an enticing palate with layers of juicy flavours, intensity and concentration, finishing with a refreshing, crisp, clean line of acidity.

FINANCE

Q Finance &A with Wealthfarm

I

‘m trying to save so I have money taken from my pay each week. The problem is I can’t seem to get my credit card balance down. How can I save and get rid of my credit card? Here are some tips to start reducing debt so you can concentrate on creating wealth. If you have savings, use it to pay off your highrate debt. In most cases, the best investment you can possibly make is to pay off your credit card debts and car loans. The interest rates on such debt are higher than the rates you receive from almost any investment. Paying off a loan with a 14% interest rate, for instance, is in effect paying yourself 14% interest, guaranteed and tax-free. Many people worry by paying off their debt, they’re wasting their savings. But when it comes to high-rate debt, nothing could be further from the truth. For example:

• You have a $1000 loan for which you pay an annual interest rate of 14%. • You also have $1000 in the bank earning interest 3%. • If you keep the $1000 in the bank for a year, you’ll earn $30 in interest (and pay tax on the interest income) while paying $140 in interest on the loan. Simple maths – you are facing a loss of $110 even before tax. If you take that money out of the savings account and pay off the loan immediately, you’ll earn no interest but you will also pay no interest so you are actually saving $110. Transfer debt from high-interest-rate loans to lower-rate loans. The process of transferring debt from high-rate loans to lower-rate loans is known as refinancing. Obviously it’s better to pay 8% to borrow money than it is to pay 18% so if you currently have credit card debt that you can’t

New year New life.

pay off right away, apply for a low-rate card that allows you to transfer your current debt to it. Pay on time. Everyone from lenders to landlords and even potential employers have the ability to access your credit history. People who appear to have trouble managing their debt get charged higher interest rates on everything from credit cards to home loans. They are also more likely to get turned down as a potential renter or even as an employee. You can’t change your past, but you can make a huge difference in your future by paying your bills on time. The number one factor that goes into your credit score is your record of paying bills on time. Talk to your lender. If you have a debt-related issue. The lender might be willing to change the terms of the loan so that you can keep making your payments. If you’re trying to negotiate a lower rate, speak directly with a supervisor that can make decisions. Another option is to speak to a Mortgage Broker. Wealthfarm are able to assist you in all financial matters. We offer you an initial meeting with one of our advisers at our cost. At this meeting we ascertain whether we can help you achieve your financial goals. HEALTH

S

uffering from lower back pain? Do you think you may have sciatica? Many years ago, I injured my left hip in a car accident. The impact was direct and it hurt for a few weeks, but nothing permanent. Now, 15 years later, I suffer from sciatica, but in my right leg! I find it hard to even walk for long before my leg gets a shooting pain down the back of it and a dull ache across my lower back. My question is this: Can it be related to the accident? I feel like it is. Why is it happening on the right leg when I injured the left? Do I need to see a doctor or a chiropractor or maybe just a massage? I was taught that pain is not always an indicator of where the problem is and that we need to approach a diagnosis carefully instead of going straight to the source of the pain only.

This sounds like a good example of that. You injured the left hip many years ago and it’s most likely the right hip has been compensating for 15 years eventually developing a problem of its own! So yes, it sounds as though it’s a result of the accident. This same concept applies to any injuries we have even as kids, which may not seem like much of an issue at the time, but can cause a much bigger problem many years later if it’s not addressed properly when the injury occurs. I see many examples of this. It’s always easier to correct an issue earlier than it is years on. If you are suspecting something is out of balance or blatently a problem, then get it checked straight away. Doctors will write you a prescription for pain killers, which is helpful in the short term, but doesn’t bring about balance and correct the

problem – it’s a band aid treatment. A massage will relax the muscles but again, not provide long term correction. A chiropractor will x-ray the spine and pelvis and give recommendations for future improvement and change. We are conditioned in our culture for quick fixes and alleviation of pain, even emotional pain. That’s why often the cause of the problem never goes away – it just sits beneath the surface. What I suggest is, get your spine looked at thoroughly by a chiropractor and listen to the recommendations with your future in mind. If you suspect any spinal problems or feel out balance and want your spine checked thoroughly with x-rays and a postural analysis, please contact us at Chiropractic Central on 07) 5530 8494 or visit our website www.chiropracticcentral.com.au.

GC squirrel Get It hits the town with the faces in the places you need to be!

Our Squirrel’s got his finger firmly on the pulse of the GC social scene. Caught Out!

Now many of us have heard a story or two about people that re-gift. Over the years this squirrel has received a few little presents that were not purchased for moi, including a gift that had a little bit of Christmas paper stuck to the bottom of the box...it was a birthday present in March! This blatant re-gifting was never mentioned, however this one must simply be shared. On Christmas day, from my partner’s sister’s family, squirrel was very pleased with his present (a previous gift included a soup bowl mug). However this was a beautiful stainless steel water jug complete with a box. Only, a few days later, a friend visited my apartment was admiring the water jug and stated, ‘It is lovely and modern, what brand is the jug, l wouldn’t mind one?’ Upon inspection of the base of the jug she burst into hysteric laughter. She simply showed me the base and for once, l was speechless. The bottom of the jug was engraved, Happy 40th Karen! The next family visit, squirrel could simply not help but drag out the jug and asked for the receipt as it had rust on the bottom of the base. Plenty of laughs and a new nickname which is sure to stick for many years to come!

Guest entertainer was international DJ, Havanna Brown...a big hit with the crowd. Want to know if you should splash on some new heels or save for a rainy day? Waiting for Mr Drop Dead Yummy to saunter through the door? Our new spirit guide has all the answers (well, nearly all).

Pisces 19 February-20 March The luxury of withdrawing into the depths of your inner world is a necessary one this month. Use this inner time to regroup and strengthen yourself. As you emerge refreshed and renewed towards the end of the month, you’ll have a new perspective and a new lease on life.

Cancer 21 June-22 July Now is not the time to hide away in your shell, Cancer! I know it’s comfortable in there but you won’t find what you’re striving for by side-stepping your feelings. Now it’s time to come out and face your fears...and when you do, you will be rewarded.

Scorpio 23 October-21 November Shift happens this month for Scorpios, as inner tensions and frustrations rise with Mars and the Sun combining their energies. Earthing the electrical charge doesn’t mean you need to sting those around you. Think before you act as you may regret your words later.

Aries 21 March-19 April This month sees the fiesty-o-meter rise for Aries as you express your cheeky good nature in all manner of ways. Others may mistake this as aggression so be mindful of words and actions, otherwise you may find yourself going to battle before you know it!

Leo 23 July-22 August With the Full Moon in Leo this month, beams of light are cast upon uncertain people and situations. As the moon casts everything in a dramatic light, you find yourself in the starring role. Usually you excel in the lead role, just make sure you don’t overact the part.

Sagittarius 22 November-21 December Be aware of what you offer this month as your words may be bigger than what you can deliver, leading to disappointment in others. Clarity and careful preparation are the keys in getting any type of project off the ground and ensuring its success. Carelessness may be costly.

Taurus 20 April-20 May As you focus on achieving material success, try not to lose sight of the deeper value of life. If you don’t remember to nourish your soul you may end up feeling tired, empty and disillusioned, which may impact your love life and relationships.

Virgo 23 August-22 September Again, the balance between work and fun is very important. As you strive for recognition at work, don’t forget to kick up your heels every now and again. All work and no play, makes Jane a dull Virgo.

Capricorn 22 December-19 January Ideas fly freely this month as inspirations abound. By setting clear goals and sound strategies you can reach new heights of success. Organisation and planning are familiar friends to Capricorns so call on them whenever you need.

Gemini 21 May-20 June You may have been feeling the urge to take your ideas to a wider stage and this would be the perfect time to do so. Intuition leads the way as you follow your dreams and guidance. This may feel uncomfortable for you at times. Trust yourself, you can do it!

LIBRA 23 September-22 October There may be a sense of mistrust of others sitting with you this month which can stop your expression of joy. Do your homework before confronting another and you will stand triumphant, knowing you spoke from your truth rather than blame.

Aquarius 20 January-18 February It’s all about you Aquarius, and where you want to go, be and do! Take this time to set your goals for the year putting yourself and your dreams first. This is your time to shine, which will of course allow others around you to see their own light and take control of themselves.

The makings of a muse:

Heroine. Humanitarian. Homemaker.

We come to love not by finding the perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly

– Angelina Jolie

February 2011

The Angelina Jolie of old was more wellknown for her attention-seeking and strange antics with her numerous tattoos, public family kissing and wearing a vial of human blood around her neck. Her early days, spent experimenting with sexuality, drugs and lifestyle habits were often documented. But despite being a wild actress the young star was already exhibiting the acting talent of her father and earned a Golden Globe for her raw performance in Gia, the true life biography of the late supermodel Gia Marie Carangi. Quickly followed by Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in her unnerving performance as a drug addicted teen in Girl Interrupted (1999). Angelina’s life made a dramatic 180-degree turn during the filming of Tomb Raider where she brought to life iconic video game character, Lara Croft in 2001. Primarily shot in and around the poverty stricten regions of Cambodia, Angelina witnessed firsthand humanitarian crises unfolding. After wrapping the film, she contacted the United Nations High Commission for Refugees and began a series of visits to hotspots around the world. She was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador halfway through 2001. It was a new sense of direction and self confessed purpose as she drifted away from the craziness of her early 20’s. The following year, she adopted her son, Maddox, from Cambodia and has done extensive humanitarian work ever since.

Brooding earth mother:

Fast forward to 2011, the Oscar-winning actress has six children, Maddox, nine, Pax, seven, Zahara, five, Shiloh, four, and twoyear-old twins, Knox and Vivienne, with partner Brad Pitt and admits having such a large family has it’s potential difficulties and often finds it more relaxing when she’s at work. Although Angelina openly admits being a mother-of-six is exhausting, she’s mindful of her good fortunes.

Fight for a cause:

As an UN Goodwill Ambassador, Angelina continues to use her status as a megastar to generate media coverage about the plight of refugees and the poor conditions under which they live. Her travels include remote refugee camps and receiving centers in countries such as Tanzania, Namibia, Cambodia, Pakistan, Thailand, and Ecuador to name a few. To further raise awareness, she has released her personal journals that can be accessed at USA for UNHCR. “You go to these places and you realize what life’s really about and what people are really going through,” says Angelina. “These people are my heroes.”
