AREA 2
Not far behind Dam Square, between the wellknown ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. Pleasant, unique and bold In former times the workshops of craftsmen could be found in Reestraat, Berenstraat, Runstraat, Hartenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Huidenstraat, Gasthuismolensteeg, Oude Spiegelstraat and Wijde Heisteeg. Nowadays the small streets are full of specialist shops. If you want to snap up something special, you are bound to be successful here. Contrary to the large shops in the city centre, nothing is standard here. Except the more easy-going atmosphere and the great amount of creativity. Vintage, chic, second-hand and everything in between The collections of the shops show that the owners are passionate enthusiasts. Many of them have made their hobby their job. If you love clothes with just something special, you can indulge yourself in the more than fifty clothes shops. No sameness here, but mainly colourful, chic, trendy, exciting, vintage or secondhand clothes. The second-hand shops in the Nine Streets are famous for vintage, chic and second-hand clothes in Amsterdam by the way. Unlike anything else All the shops really show sincere interests: shoe shops with unusual collections, a sock shop for men, specialised bookshops, a cheese shop with hundreds of different types of cheeses and have you ever seen a White Teeth shop before?
TIPS! • On de9straatjes.nl/uk/ you can see the amount of specialised shops • Most shops in the Nine Streets are also open on Sundays, after 12.00 hours. • There are various small cafés in the Nine Streets that sell healthy sandwiches, smoothies, cheesecake and other goodies.

The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) are located in the heart of Amsterdam, in a part of the old city centre. Here you can both feel and see the history of Amsterdam. The nine streets are unique for their diversity and history but at the same time have managed to incorporate the splendour of the past with a taste of the present.

DE 9 STRAATJES CENTRUM
A unique characteristic of the nine streets is that you will not find any chain stores here; in fact almost all of the stores in the nine streets are speciality stores of some kind. From cheese to chocolates, fancy dress to second-hand clothing, antiques to art deco, tearooms and lunchrooms to bars; kitsch, retro and loungy are all represented in these nine unique and distinctive streets.
“The whole world is built around Amsterdam” wrote the world famous in Holland poet Joost van den Vondel in the seventeenth century. This century - being the Dutch Golden Age - was for Amsterdam a previously unexperienced period of prosperity. People came to the city for business or a decent living. The old town area became too small, so an extension was inevitable and three new main canals were dug out: Heren-, Keizers- and Prinsen-gracht. Between them cross-canals and -streets. The quarter of ‘9 Streets’ was constructed in the first half of the 17th century and was
from the beginning until now dominated by trade and culture. The names of the streets remind us of the old artisans dealing with all kinds of skins for the leatherindustry. The area permits a general view of the architecture of all kinds of houses. Among these houses are the beautiful Vingboon-Houses and the building ‘Felix Meritis’. The Felix Meritis-building dates from 1787. It was ordered by the Felix Meritis-Society. This society was guided by the enlightenment and the ideals of those days. In this building the first Amsterdam (oval) concert-hall was constructed. By means of concerts, lessons and tests the

public was actively involved. With a short intermission it has always cleared the way for cultural purposes. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was heard in the no longer exisiting municipal theater on the Keizersgracht. On the Herengracht you’ll find the Biblical Museum. The collection is quite diverse with in its heart the Book itself (the oldest dating from 1477), an important number of temple models, archeological finds from Egypt and so on.In the Gasthuismolensteeg nr. 7 you will find the Dutch Spectacles Museum. It reveals the history of spectacles over 700 years. In the neighbourhood of our quarter of the ‘9 Streets’ is the Royal Palace, the former Town Hall, built in 1648, the Westerkerk where Rembrandt was buried and the Anne Frank House in which the Frank family was hiding from l942 until l944. Here Anne wrote her famous diary. Visit us and find for yourself that our ‘9 Streets’ are an ideal framework to explore Amsterdam in all it’s facets and richness. Moreover you’ll have the experience that our quarter itself is an exclusive shopping area with an unmatched range of shops, studios, restaurants and hotels.

Brilmuseum (Museum of Spectacles)
Keizersgracht 324 | 020 6262321 (office) www.felix.meritis.nl
Gasthuismolensteeg 7 | 020 4212414 www.brilmuseumamsterdam
Felix Meritis is an independent European centre for art, culture, science as well as an (inter) national meeting place in Amsterdam. In Felix Meritis art, culture, philosophy and politics are matters of everyday life. It continues the values of the Enlightenment that led its founders (40 citizens) to erect one of the grandest buildings on the Keizersgracht with Holland’s oldest purpose-built concert hall (opened in 1788).
The Brilmuseum (National Museum of Spectacles) grew out of a private collector’s passion for optometric objects. Today, the collection is displayed on two floors of a lovely 17th century building located in Amsterdam’s charming Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) district. The museum provides a unique overview of the 700-year history of spectacles, including the changing fashions and technologies over the centuries.
