City of Amsterdam Where to begin? That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you the Amsterdam Journal has divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. Each area has its own character. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown (referring to the dark wood interiors) pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands (Museumkwartier – Museum Quarter), large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops (Centrum (Centre), de Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rem8

brandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)

Jordaan

Area 1

Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. In the past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot! Authentic working class area You can wander around through the streets and side streets in a relaxed way and enjoy the spontaneous and relaxed atmosphere. You can experience the typical atmosphere of the Jordaan, in streets like Westerstraat, Tweede Anjeliersdwarsstraat, Tweede Tuindwarsstraat and around the Noordermarkt. On Saturdays you will find the best organic farmer’s market of Amsterdam on the Noordermarkt, directly opposite the Noorderkerk (Noorder church). Pubs/Bars and shops When you walk from the Noorderkerk to the Westerkerk (Western church) – the recognizable church that has a blue-red crown on its tower - , you will automatically get to the Westermarkt. Here you will find the monument for gay people (1987), consisting of three large pink granite triangles. From here you can go straight onto Rozengracht (Rozen canal). This shopping street is very well-liked because of its diversity of nice shops.

Tips! • Do you want to visit the Anne Frank House (Prinsengracht 267)? Be there on time and prepare for serious waiting times. • Find Dutch conviviality in one of the over 60 (brown) cafés in the Jordaan. • Visit the fabric market (Lapjesmarkt) on the Noordermarkt: Mondays 8.00 – 14.00 hours. •

Feel like going on a shopping spree? At the edge of the Jordaan you will find the Haarlemmerstraat and the Haarlemmerdijk with many contemporary and unique and edgy clothes shops.

10

Anne Frank house Also not far from the Westerkerk, you can take a look in the Anne Frank’s Achterhuis. Behind a closet that turns out to be a door, you will find the small house where she wrote in her diary. Very oppressive. The real pub life ‘Gezellig. This Dutch word – that can barely be translated properly -, applies perfectly to the typical (brown) pubs in the Jordaan. The atmosphere is easy-going, the people are spontaneous and speak with a very broad Amsterdam accent. You will regularly hear the sound of original Dutch music.

Not far behind Dam Square, between the wellknown ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. Pleasant, unique and bold In former times the workshops of craftsmen could be found in Reestraat, Berenstraat, Runstraat, Hartenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Huidenstraat, Gasthuismolensteeg, Oude Spiegelstraat and Wijde Heisteeg. Nowadays the small streets are full of specialist shops. If you want to snap up something special, you are bound to be successful here. Contrary to the large shops in the city centre, nothing is standard here. Except the more easy-going atmosphere and the great amount of creativity. Vintage, chic, second-hand and everything in between The collections of the shops show that the owners are passionate enthusiasts. Many of them have made their hobby their job. If you love clothes with just something special, you can indulge yourself in the more than fifty clothes shops. No sameness here, but mainly colourful, chic, trendy, exciting, vintage or secondhand clothes. The second-hand shops in the Nine Streets are famous for vintage, chic and second-hand clothes in Amsterdam by the way. Unlike anything else All the shops really show sincere interests: shoe shops with unusual collections, a sock shop for men, specialised bookshops, a cheese shop with hundreds of different types of cheeses and have you ever seen a White Teeth shop before?

Tips! • On de9straatjes.nl/uk/ you can see the amount of specialised shops • Most shops in the Nine Streets are also open on Sundays, after 12.00 hours. • There are various small cafés in the Nine Streets that sell healthy sandwiches, smoothies, cheesecake and other goodies.

A unique characteristic of the nine streets is that you will not find any chain stores here; in fact almost all of the stores in the nine streets are speciality stores of some kind. From cheese to chocolates, fancy dress to second-hand clothing, antiques to art deco, tearooms and lunchrooms to bars; kitsch, retro and loungy are all represented in these nine unique and distinctive streets.

“The whole world is built around Amsterdam” wrote the world famous in Holland poet Joost van den Vondel in the seventeenth century. This century - being the Dutch Golden Age - was for Amsterdam a previously unexperienced period of prosperity. People came to the city for business or a decent living. The old town area became too small, so an extension was inevitable and three new main canals were dug out: Heren-, Keizers- and Prinsen-gracht. Between them cross-canals and -streets. The quarter of ‘9 Streets’ was constructed in the first half of the 17th century and was

from the beginning until now dominated by trade and culture. The names of the streets remind us of the old artisans dealing with all kinds of skins for the leatherindustry. The area permits a general view of the architecture of all kinds of houses. Among these houses are the beautiful Vingboon-Houses and the building ‘Felix Meritis’. The Felix Meritis-building dates from 1787. It was ordered by the Felix Meritis-Society. This society was guided by the enlightenment and the ideals of those days. In this building the first Amsterdam (oval) concert-hall was constructed. By means of concerts, lessons and tests the

public was actively involved. With a short intermission it has always cleared the way for cultural purposes. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was heard in the no longer exisiting municipal theater on the Keizersgracht. On the Herengracht you’ll find the Biblical Museum. The collection is quite diverse with in its heart the Book itself (the oldest dating from 1477), an important number of temple models, archeological finds from Egypt and so on.In the Gasthuismolensteeg nr. 7 you will find the Dutch Spectacles Museum. It reveals the history of spectacles over 700 years. In the neighbourhood of our quarter of the ‘9 Streets’ is the Royal Palace, the former Town Hall, built in 1648, the Westerkerk where Rembrandt was buried and the Anne Frank House in which the Frank family was hiding from l942 until l944. Here Anne wrote her famous diary. Visit us and find for yourself that our ‘9 Streets’ are an ideal framework to explore Amsterdam in all it’s facets and richness. Moreover you’ll have the experience that our quarter itself is an exclusive shopping area with an unmatched range of shops, studios, restaurants and hotels.

As a Bauhaus student of Walter Gropius, Max Bill intuitively understood how to apply the pursuit of constructive clarity and precise proportions to his work. The collaboration between Junghans and Max Bill began in 1956 with the design of a kitchen clock. The design of the face cascaded directly into the design of wristwatches in 1961.

Restaurant Lust is an all day round place that serves PURE GOOD FOOD in a trendy atmo sphere. The lunch menu offers a great variety in sandwiches, salads, burgers and shakes. At night the place transforms to a more classy restaurant with nice wines and good service. The dinner menu is international, inspired by Mediterranean cuisine. For just a salad or an extensive night of dinning, Lust is a place to be.

There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes. Where to begin? Rijksmuseum (National Museum) In this impressive monumental building dating from 1885 you will find the famous masterpieces of Dutch and Flemish painters from the fifteenth up to and including the nineteenth century. Here you will also find Rembrandt’s world-famous Night Watch (1650). Other masters to be found here are: Jan Steen, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer. After a long renovation project the Rijksmuseum has been open again completely since April. Van Gogh Museum When you walk through this museum you clearly see how this painter developed. As sombre as the paintings are that he made in the Netherlands, so colourful and vivid are the works that he made on French soil. You will also find works of contemporaries like Monet and Gauguin in the museum. Stedelijk Museum (Municipal Museum) The Stedelijk Museum, established in 1874, has a large collection of classical, modern and contemporary art. The museum owns about 90.000 objects from practically all important 20th and 21st century schools.

Tips! • If you don’t like waiting, you just order your Museum tickets online. • During the concert season (mid-September to the end of June) a free lunch concert is given in the Concertgebouw on Wednesdays: between 12.00 and 12.30 hours. • High Society shopping: parallel to Museumplein you will find the most stylish and most expensive shopping street of the Netherlands: P.C. Hooftstraat. • Diamond lovers visit the Diamond Museum Amsterdam (Paulus Potterstraat, opposite Museumplein))

18

Concertgebouw (Concert building) In 1888 the first concert took place in this famous Concert building. The acoustics in the building are extraordinary. In 2013 the Concertgebouw is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Every month of the Jubilee year a different period from the history of the Concertgebouw are central. Browsing around in antique shops Together with the adjacent Nieuwe Spiegelstraat, Spiegelgracht (opposite the Rijksmuseum) makes up the heart of the Spiegelkwartier; an area with many antique shops and galleries.

Artist Mark Raven

and his Contemporary City Impressions

Text: Sarah Saarberg

It is obvious that the artist Mark Raven loves his birthplace by each and every work he has made of Amsterdam. This city never ceases to captivate and inspire him. Mark’s work is modern and wayward, but is unmistakably connected to this versatile and interesting capitol of ours. If Marks Raven’s father had had his way, Mark would have become a journalist. At the time, he followed his advice and went to the school for journalism. But he clearly was destined for other things. The artist explains his chosen medium: “The image, as means of communication, is far more appealing to me than text. Moreover, an image is universal. Everyone understands it.” And so, Mark installed himself as a street artist on a rug in the tunnel underneath the Rijksmuseum to capture the city in every way. “I love the city. But I love people too. I immediately want to show them what I make.”

Rembrandt and Escher Over the years, the art he has made, developed from highly detailed pen-and-ink drawings to a wilder and more suggestive play with lines. In his early days, Mark worked in the tradition of Rembrandt’s etchings and M.C. Escher’s graphic work, but gradually generated his modern touch. Mark combines traditional etching techniques with painting and modern graphic and digital techniques. All in a style that appeals to a lot of people. And not just tourists. Many Amsterdammers have a Mark Raven hanging on their wall.

Accessible for every budget Kiosk on Museumplein Mark’s work was liked right from the beginning. So much even, that the city council helped him to a studio right on the Museumplein in the form of a rebuild flower stall. “One of the busiest places in the city, so I am still amongst my people.” The stall is still there. Mark wanted his art to be accessible for everyone, and so he began to print t-shirts and posters with his work. “I would like it if everyone could enjoy my view of Amsterdam,” he simply says.

Nowadays, apart from the kiosk on Museumplein, he has a gallery slash shop on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, a fabulous location right behind Dam square next to Magna Plaza. On the ground floor you can buy t-shirts, posters, postcards and other articles, all with the recognizable Mark Raven art. Upstairs, you can find original prints, some printed in a limited edition, others not. This is for the reason that, despite his enormous success, Mark Raven wants to be attainable for every budget. “My boxes with coasters are very popular with backpackers. I like that: in this way, my view on Amsterdam will spread all around the world.”

Old Town

Area 4 Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. Although not appreciated by everyone, a tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. The Zeedijk and China Town Close to Central station you will find one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam: the Zeedijk. The place is swarming with restaurants, cafés and Indonesian shops (tokos). The Zeedijk is the centre of China Town; the Peking ducks hang behind the windows and a large Buddhist temple colours the street scene. From midday you will increasingly smell aromas that make your mouth water. Pull up a chair in one of the smaller Chinese restaurants. This is where Chinese Amsterdammers (or Amsterdam Chinese) eat too. Is there a line somewhere? Then the wait is very probably highly worthwhile! Red light district The Red Light district covers the area between Zeedijk and Warmoesstraat. As soon as dusk falls and the shining red light greets you, the atmosphere is loose and laid back here. The ladies behind the windows wink playfully are friendly and wave to the merry passers-by. Do you want to get your breath back for a moment from all the impressions? There are plenty of pubs to recover while enjoying a beer.

Tips! • Try turning onto Spooksteeg from Zeedijk and cross the bridge for a fantastic ‘keyhole’ view of Amsterdam • There is lots to see and do around Zeedijk too. There are some great Asian stores on Geldersekade and Nieuwmarkt is bursting with life. • Short on time? Zeedijk is an ideal place to start and end a day in Amsterdam. • The Chinese temple is free to visit and is open every day.

20

Oude Kerksplein (Old Church Square) The Oude Kerksplein is special place in the heart of the Red Light district. The 14th century church is the oldest building still standing in Amsterdam. There’s a bronze statue on the square in honour of the prostitutes who have been active in this area for centuries. This lady is called ‘Belle’.

a proper neighbourhood with its own personality

ZEEDIJK

CENTRUM

Zeedijk lies in the historic centre of Amsterdam, within five minutes’ walk of Amsterdam Central Station. As soon as you turn the corner, you will taste the history and be tempted by special little shops and the smells of delicious fresh food coming from every direction - particularly at the Chinatown end of the street.

Stories straight from the heart You will be able to see how strong the bond is between shop owners, restaurateurs and café owners and Amsterdammers in the expressive film which will be shown in cafés and shops all over Zeedijk until midOctober. ‘Favourite customers’ each get two minutes to explain what keeps them coming back to Zeedijk - to their favourite shop, café or restaurant. The stories come straight from the heart and are all interesting, endearing, moving or hilarious. Anyone who spends a day on Zeedijk will inevitably get to see and hear a lot of the stories. 21

ZEEDIJK

CENTRUM

Zeedijk used to be right at the heart of Amsterdam’s port area. Sailors would come here to find a bed for the night, food, drink, company and other amusement. Today’s travellers and tourists also enjoy spending a day on Zeedijk. And who can blame them? With its unusual shops, great eateries, nightlife and, of course, Chinatown, there’s always something to experience! Zeedijk is absolutely part of Amsterdam’s historic centre. One place where you can get a sense of that lively history is Zeedijk 1, in café In ’t Aepjen. This wooden building dates back to 1544 and supposedly inspired a well-known Dutch saying, ‘In de aap gelogeerd zijn’, which means to be staying at the aap or, less literally, to be up the creek without a paddle. Another ‘brown café’ with its own story is Het Mandje, Amsterdam’s very first gay bar. Chinatown In the 1950s, Amsterdam’s Chinese population began to settle on and around Zeedijk in numbers. The first Chinese were brought to Amsterdam in 1911 as cheap labour. Forced by the economic crisis of the 1930s and the arrival of motorised ships, they went looking for other sources of income. Amsterdam’s Chinatown owes its Chinese specialist stores, Chinese health shops and authentic Chinese kitchens to these developments. Plus, of course, there is its splendid Chinese Buddhist temple. A neighbourhood with personality The 1970s and ’80s were turbulent times for Zeedijk. The port activities had shifted to the west of Amsterdam and the neighbourhood was now swamped with heroin dealers. It was even officially declared an emergency area. These days, there is no sign of that anymore. On the contrary! Thanks to the fact that local

people tackled its problems together, Zeedijk has developed into a particularly pleasant street with a real sense of solidarity among business owners, residents and visitors, many of whom are regulars. Eating and drinking Each one of the cafés, lunchrooms, tearooms and restaurants has something special about it, in terms of both the interiors and the menus: if you like personal, small-scale, homemade and fresh from the oven food, you’ll find it hard to make a choice. Fortunately, Zeedijk is open for business from breakfast to dinner and from high tea to dessert. Night owls, too, are well catered for: the nightclubs and cafés keep their doors open until the early hours. Something to see everywhere The shops all have their own look and stories too. This makes a Zeedijk a miniature heaven for lovers of craftsmanship, collectors of special products and everyone who enjoys feasting their eyes. It is a case of taking your time and keeping your eyes open as you stroll around, otherwise you will miss a lot. Those who do this will be rewarded by the many specialist shops offering everything from designer toys, special underwear and cool trainers to fetish clothing, comic books from all over the world and designer fashion. You have been warned: the risk of ‘system overload’ is ever present!

the Docklands

Area 9

In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. Architecture and urban design Present and past have been brought together in the architecture and the urban design of the Docklands. The harbour feeling is still alive, but old warehouses have been given new functions and the diverging designs of various artists link up with each other perfectly. Admire the special houses on KNSM island, walk across the whole Java island via the pedestrian bridges and take a look at the Whale (or Sphinx) on the Sporenbrug on Borneo island. IJburg is absolutely worth a visit for architectural buffs. The urban design scheme here is based on the ‘collage city concept’. The island consists of 8 neighbourhoods, each of which has its own individual character. Going out and music The Docklands attract many artistic people, so it comes as no surprise that when it comes to culture and going out there is plenty to do here. It’s mainly about contemporary classical music in the Music Building (Muziekgebouw) on IJ lake (a ten-minute walk from the back of the Central Station). The Bim house (Bim huis), that protrudes on the street side of the Music Building is a concert hall for jazz and improvised music. When you cross the IJ with the Ferry (Pont) from the back of the railway station, you get to another striking building: the Netherlands EYE Film Institute. The collection of the EYE comprises the complete film history.

Tips! • Take a guided walk (also in the English language) on the Eastern Docklands • Visit the permanent showing in the basement of the EYE Film Institute Nederland for free. • Pay a visit to the beautiful Maritime Museum and get on board a replica of a VOC ship. (Kattenburgerplein 1) •

Last chance to see

Van Gogh at work The anniversary exhibition Van Gogh at work brings together many of Van Gogh’s exceptional artworks. It also celebrates the results of eight years of research into the way of working of Vincent van Gogh as well as the museum’s 40th anniversary. The exhibition can be viewed until 12 January 2014.

As an artist, Vincent van Gogh is famous for his unusual style and use of colour. His image is that of a genial autodidact whose technique involved the spontaneous placement of paint on canvas using wild gestures. Nothing is further from the truth: Van Gogh was an artist who believed in craftsmanship, in hard work and sought support in the mastery of his art.

Based on scientific research In the anniversary exhibition, we see how Vincent van Gogh developed into a unique artist with an impressive oeuvre. Over 200 paintings, works on paper, sketchbooks and letters from Van Gogh and other artists – supplemented with 19th-century painting materials and artists’ handbooks – provide insight into Van Gogh’s way of working. Besides our own extensive collection, you will see top works from collections worldwide. The Van Gogh at work anniversary exhibition is the result of a long research project into the artist’s methods. Since 2005, a multidisciplinary team consisting of the Van Gogh Museum, the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed; RCE) and Shell Nederland, Vincent van Gogh - Sunflowers - Arles, 1889 Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam - (Vincent van Gogh Foundation)

has been involved in intensive research into Vincent van Gogh’s techniques and material use. The results are hugely important for our knowledge about the artist. The exhibition leads you chronologically through Van Gogh’s development as an artist. It also presents a number of themes for anyone wishing to learn more about his use of materials and technique. Besides plenty to see, there’s also lots to do. You can see and feel which material Van Gogh used and discover how colours influenced each other. You can also view paint samples through a microscope and study X-rays.

New Van Gogh painting discovered! During the exhibition, a newly discovered painting by Van Gogh is on display: Sunset at Montmajour. Director Axel Rüger: ‘We are pleased to be able to show this exceptional painting to our visitors, because a new discovery of this magnitude has never before occurred in the history of the Van Gogh Museum. It is already a rarity that a new painting can be added to Van Gogh’s oeuvre. But what makes this even more exceptional is that

this is a large painting from his period in Arles in the south of France, considered by many to be the culmination of his artistic achievement. During this period, he also painted world-famous works such as Sunflowers, The yellow house and The bedroom. The attribution to Van Gogh is based on extensive research into style, technique, paint, canvas, the depiction, Van Gogh’s letters and the provenance. This discovery underlines the importance of research, which also forms the basis of the exhibition Van Gogh at work. Thematically arranged, typical magazine themes are highlighted in the exhibition, such as documentary, culinary, fashion, interior design, travel, portraiture and sports - from Belize to Bhutan, from California to Korea, from Chanel to Gaultier, from André Hazes to Andy Warhol, from Marco van Basten to Candy Dulfer, from organic chicken to king crab. The best of the work by these photographers has been brought together within these themes and an intriguing portrait of an era has been created. The work of C. Barton van Flymen, Bart van Leeuwen, Boudewijn Neuteboom, Bart Nieuwenhuijs and Peter van der Velde has had a great deal of influence on advertising photography.

This fairytale ballet by choreographer Marius Petipa and composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (who also created Swan Lake and The Nutcracker) is one of the greatest treasures ever produced by the Russian Imperial Ballet. Almost 125 years after its premiere, the ballet is still regarded as the most demanding and brilliant example of the pure classical ballet style. ‘If you have never seen a big classical ballet, this is the one to start with’. Richard Wagner 1813-1883 - Götterdämmerung Het Muziektheater Amsterdam Waterlooplein 22 | www.het-muziektheater.nl www.dno.nl phone: (020) 625 54 55 14-30 November 2013 The further that Wagner continued with his work, the more he deepened his powers of expression and his style, going ever deeper until he broke through to a world that was particular to him alone and that often is garbed in twilight hues. In a Prelude that recaps the preceding events, the three Norns, who rule the destiny of the gods, declare that the end of the world is at hand. Brünnhilde and Siegfried, however, are unaware of their fate. They both pass up their last chance be freed from the curse of the ring: Waltraute beseeches her sister, without success, to give the ring back to the Rhine maidens; when Siegfried meets these extraordinary creatures, they reiterate their claim to the ring — also in vain. It is only when Siegfried is murdered by Alberich’s son Hagen that Brünnhilde realises how deeply she has been betrayed and how great the happiness the world could have known. She hurls the ring back into the Rhine and casts herself onto an immense pyre that will reunite her with her fallen hero. Wagner closes his gigantic Ring tetralogy with a comprehension of Schopenhauer’s nihilism, but with music that grants nature a purifying and cleansing force.

International Sieraad Art Fair Westergasfabriek Polonceaukade 27 | www.westergasfabriek.nl www.sieraadartfair.com phone: (020) 586 07 10 from 7 through 10 November 2013 SAF is a a lot of things. It is thé fair if you are looking for the greatest variation and highest quality in contemporary international jewellery design. Fashion jewellery has a double image. On the one hand there is the commercial mass-produced stuff, on the other hand good-quality work is made that a lot of people can afford. At SAF there are examples of the latter category, such as a special presentation on the LBD, the Little Black Dress of which every woman owns at least one. With a different piece of jewellery it turns into a different dress. The key question therefore is not: ‘what dress shall I wear’, but ‘what jewellery shall I wear’. The answer is supplied by the Maastricht Art Academy, where students have designed some spectacular one-of-a-kind pieces for just as remarkable Little Black Dresses. They subsequently translated these show-stoppers into fashion jewellery produced in a limited edition – for sale at the fair, obviously. More and more jewellery designers join forces to conquer the world with a group presentation. This year, November 7 - 10 same place as always: the

music and concerts this season The Heliocentrics North Sea Jazz Club Westergasfabriek Polonceaukade 27 | www.westergasfabriek.nl phone: (020) 586 07 10 24 November You may or may not know “the Heliocentrics”. But the chances are you do know some of the artists they have collaborated and worked with since the bands conception in 2006. The list includes “DJ Shadow”, “Mulatu Astake”, “Dr Lloyd Miller“, “Madlib”, “Adm/Mrr”, “Mr Chop”, and “The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble”, to name but a few. The band is about to release ‘13 Degrees of Reality’ their second album on Now Again, the L.A. based label of long standing friend and music taste maker Eothan Alapatt. This record is a culmination of many years of musical evolution - which has seen the band constantly shifting their musical parameters and form, never conforming long enough to any particular musical genre to be labelled and assimilated into the multitudes of musical styles already categorized. Of course within this melting pot there are many discernible influences most noticably: ‘Psyche’, ‘Music Concrete’, ‘Post Punk’, ‘Library music’,’The Velvet Underground’, ‘Kraut rock’, ‘Indigenous music’ and early 70’s ‘Italian Soundtracks’ being just some of the many inspirations behind this current release. This album is where Music and Art collide in a heady mix of psychedlia and experimentation. ‘13 Degrees of Reality’ is entirely live (with the exception of some overdubs), recorded in the Heliocentrics’ own vintage analog studio, and is a dark journey through a genre-defying sprawl of twisted analogue sounds and off kilter rhythms’ held together with a musicianship

Whatever your taste is, Amsterdam has it. Amsterdam has all the nightlife you would expect. There are intimate restaurants, bars with or without live music, hip dance clubs, comedy clubs, and a casino. A complete list would fill a whole book, so we can only give you some recommendations here.

bars | live music

restaurants | cafés As one might expect from a cosmopolitan city, Amsterdam not only offers the possibility of enjoying classical French cuisine, but since a few decades the city has also abounded in - sometimes surprisingly good - Greek, Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese, Korean and even Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants. This fact has caused the extensive, daily public market in Albert Cuypstraat to adapt its range to the purchasing requirements of these restaurants. For a quick cheap lunchtime bite try the sandwich shops, the chips stands or herring stalls. Eating maatjes (‘mates’) herring is quite possibly the only important culinary tradition of our otherwise in this respect poorly endowed country. Amsterdam is also a city with many bars and cafés, some 1,500 in all. Each of the areas mentioned below has something to offer, from friendly and relaxed brown cafés, stylish grand cafés to crowded designer bars. The cafés and bars vary greatly and have their own special attraction: a wide range of beers, jenever (Dutch gin), live music, canalside terraces, board games, pool tables or just good old fun.

Jordaan The most easy-going area of the city hosts a great number of outstanding restaurants and bars, from classical French cuisine, Thai food to Tapas bars. Something can be found to everyone’s taste. Rembrandtplein Observed by the cast-iron statue of Amsterdam’s most famous painter lies Rembrandtplein. This place is bustling with places to eat and drink. Some of the most beautiful grand cafés are located here, like Schiller withits marvellous art deco interior. Utrechtsestraat area This narrow street has a special atmosphere and is known for its gift shops and international restaurants. Before dining, you can unwind with a drink on a terrace on Rembrandtplein. Reguliersdwarsstraat As far as gay nightlife is concerned, without a doubt, the Reguliersdwarsstraat is the hippest street in town. However, some of the best restaurants are located here. Leidseplein Leidseplein is Amsterdam’s centre of entertainment, with its many bars, nightclubs, theatres, music halls and hotels. Of course there are many different types of restaurants here.

Amsterdam has some great small bars where you enter for free and or a small fee to listen to live music. Singer-songwriters, jazz, pop, folk or even classical music. You just have to know where to go.

cocktails | dinner The Venice of the North, Amsterdam’s attractions are considerable. Besides the famed red-light areas where windowshopping takes on a whole new meaning and the coffee bars that are more popular for their other wares, Amsterdam is also home to hundreds of great bars and clubs: style bars, cocktail bars, bistros, restaurants and casinos, and the famous brown cafes where you can linger long over a beer and watch the people of Amsterdam go about their business. Once you’ve visited the museum quarter and taken a tour of the canals, you can hit the town. A night out in the many bars of Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein should see you into the small hours.

dinner | clubs Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to groove. In Amsterdam you can party all night long, nearly every night of the week! Have a look at the listings below - whether you’re into techno, drum & bass, top 40, hip-hop or anything in between, you’ll find a club to match your mood.

For fans of the Indian kitchen this is just the right place. Guests are welcomed with extra thin, delicious papadums, and this is only the beginning. The always first class curries and tandoori dishes are traditionally spicy. The spicy dishes such as vindaloo and madras are consistently of a high quality - the right amount of spices to make you break a sweat, but not too much to call the fire brigade. Cuisine open 5 - 11.30pm.

Welcome

At NeL you’ll find one of the most beautiful terraces of Amsterdam. Even during wintertime it’s comfortable to be under the ancient trees, just in front of the 17th century wooden church, with a nice view over the Mediterranean looking square called Amstelveld. This is situated along the Prinsengracht. A surprisingly quiet oasis, only a minute away from the hectic touristic Rembrandtsquare. Still it is on walking distance of all important sites, like the Skinny Bridge and Hermitage, Van Gogh, Rijksmuseum, Van Loon Museum and more. In fact it is an ideal place to rest ones feet a while, a coffee and Nel have Amstelveld 12, 02 applecake, a glass of beerwww.nelamstelveld.n or wine, a snack or a full meal. red light an impression about amsterdams eldest red light district The Red Light District in Amsterdam is visited by more than 4 million visitors each year who are curious to know what goes on behind the closed curtains. The Red Light District is very close to the Dam Square. Here Amsterdam started of as a settlement around a dam in the river Amstel at the end of the 12th century.

As the years went by the curtains opened more and more.

Let’s be honest Prostitution has enjoyed a long tradition of tolerance in Amsterdam. Safety is key here. In addition to preventing forced prostitution, the aim is an open and honest approach. Sex-workers here have their own union, plenty of police protection, an information centre (for visitors as well), frequent monitoring and testing and professional standards. The Amsterdam city centre has a romantic image. But behind the exciting, unconventional, ‘anything goes’ image of the city centre lurks a different reality -- a reality that sometimes consist of sex trafficking, forced prostitution. This is something that the city and the justice department are fighting against.

Changing the heart of Amsterdam New opportunities are setting in place a future for the city centre. The Amsterdam municipal council’s1012 project aims to discourage crime and corruption in the city centre by reducing the types of businesses that are conducive to crime and by permitting prostitution in just two areas. Together with local residents, business proprietors and investors, the municipal council is working to strengthen the area’s unique character and stimulate an economic upgrade.

Visiting the Red Light District The area is bustling with visitors and groups of tourists. It is best to travel in a pair or in a group, as the area also attracts some seedier characters. Grab a map and venture out or if you’re keen to learn more take one of the many specialised tours. ➤
