City of Amsterdam Where to begin? That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you the Amsterdam Journal has divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. Each area has its own character. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown (referring to the dark wood interiors) pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands (Museumkwartier – Museum Quarter), large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops (Centrum (Centre), de Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rem8

brandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. In the past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot! Authentic working class area You can wander around through the streets and side streets in a relaxed way and enjoy the spontaneous and relaxed atmosphere. You can experience the typical atmosphere of the Jordaan, in streets like Westerstraat, Tweede Anjeliersdwarsstraat, Tweede Tuindwarsstraat and around the Noordermarkt. On Saturdays you will find the best organic farmer’s market of Amsterdam on the Noordermarkt, directly opposite the Noorderkerk (Noorder church). Pubs/Bars and shops When you walk from the Noorderkerk to the Westerkerk (Western church) – the recognizable church that has a blue-red crown on its tower - , you will automatically get to the Westermarkt. Here you will find the monument for gay people (1987), consisting of three large pink granite triangles. From here you can go straight onto Rozengracht (Rozen canal). This shopping street is very well-liked because of its diversity of nice shops.

Tips! • Do you want to visit the Anne Frank House (Prinsengracht 267)? Be there on time and prepare for serious waiting times. • Find Dutch conviviality in one of the over 60 (brown) cafés in the Jordaan. • Visit the fabric market (Lapjesmarkt) on the Noordermarkt: Mondays 8.00 – 14.00 hours. •

Feel like going on a shopping spree? At the edge of the Jordaan you will find the Haarlemmerstraat and the Haarlemmerdijk with many contemporary and unique and edgy clothes shops.

Anne Frank house Also not far from the Westerkerk, you can take a look in the Anne Frank’s Achterhuis. Behind a closet that turns out to be a door, you will find the small house where she wrote in her diary. Very oppressive. The real pub life ‘Gezellig. This Dutch word – that can barely be translated properly -, applies perfectly to the typical (brown) pubs in the Jordaan. The atmosphere is easy-going, the people are spontaneous and speak with a very broad Amsterdam accent. You will regularly hear the sound of original Dutch music.

Not far behind Dam Square, between the wellknown ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. Pleasant, unique and bold In former times the workshops of craftsmen could be found in Reestraat, Berenstraat, Runstraat, Hartenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Huidenstraat, Gasthuismolensteeg, Oude Spiegelstraat and Wijde Heisteeg. Nowadays the small streets are full of specialist shops. If you want to snap up something special, you are bound to be successful here. Contrary to the large shops in the city centre, nothing is standard here. Except the more easy-going atmosphere and the great amount of creativity. Vintage, chic, second-hand and everything in between The collections of the shops show that the owners are passionate enthusiasts. Many of them have made their hobby their job. If you love clothes with just something special, you can indulge yourself in the more than fifty clothes shops. No sameness here, but mainly colourful, chic, trendy, exciting, vintage or second-hand clothes. The second-hand shops in the Nine Streets are famous for vintage, chic and secondhand clothes in Amsterdam by the way. Unlike anything else All the shops really show sincere interests: shoe shops with unusual collections, a sock shop for men, specialised bookshops, a cheese shop with hundreds of different types of cheeses and have you ever seen a White Teeth shop before?

Area 3

There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes. Where to begin? Rijksmuseum (National Museum) In this impressive monumental building dating from 1885 you will find the famous masterpieces of Dutch and Flemish painters from the fifteenth up to and including the nineteenth century. Here you will also find Rembrandt’s world-famous Night Watch (1650). Other masters to be found here are: Jan Steen, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer. After a long renovation project the Rijksmuseum has been open again completely since April. Van Gogh Museum When you walk through this museum you clearly see how this painter developed. As sombre as the paintings are that he made in the Netherlands, so colourful and vivid are the works that he made on French soil. You will also find works of contemporaries like Monet and Gauguin in the museum. Stedelijk Museum (Municipal Museum) The Stedelijk Museum, established in 1874, has a large collection of classical, modern and contemporary art. The museum owns about 90.000 objects from practically all important 20th and 21st century schools.

Tips! • If you don’t like waiting, you just order your Museum tickets online. • During the concert season (mid-September to the end of June) a free lunch concert is given in the Concertgebouw on Wednesdays: between 12.00 and 12.30 hours. • High Society shopping: parallel to Museumplein you will find the most stylish and most expensive shopping street of the Netherlands: P.C. Hooftstraat. • Diamond lovers visit the Diamond Museum Amsterdam (Paulus Potterstraat, opposite Museumplein))

Concertgebouw (Concert building) In 1888 the first concert took place in this famous Concert building. The acoustics in the building are extraordinary. In 2013 the Concertgebouw is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Every month of the Jubilee year a different period from the history of the Concertgebouw are central. Browsing around in antique shops Together with the adjacent Nieuwe Spiegelstraat, Spiegelgracht (opposite the Rijksmuseum) makes up the heart of the Spiegelkwartier; an area with many antique shops and galleries.

Artist Mark Raven

and his Contemporary City Impressions

It is obvious that the artist Mark Raven loves his birthplace by each and every work he has made of Amsterdam. This city never ceases to captivate and inspire him. Mark’s work is modern and wayward, but is unmistakably connected to this versatile and interesting capitol of ours. If Marks Raven’s father had had his way, Mark would have become a journalist. At the time, he followed his advice and went to the school for journalism. But he clearly was destined for other things. The artist explains his chosen medium: “The image, as means of communication, is far more appealing to me than text. Moreover, an image is universal. Everyone understands it.” And so, Mark installed himself as a street artist on a rug in the tunnel underneath the Rijksmuseum to capture the city in every way. “I love the city. But I love people too. I immediately want to show them what I make.”

Rembrandt and Escher Over the years, the art he has made, developed from highly detailed pen-and-ink drawings to a wilder and more suggestive play with lines. In his early days, Mark worked in the tradition of Rembrandt’s etchings and M.C. Escher’s graphic work, but gradually generated his modern touch. Mark combines traditional etching techniques with painting and modern graphic and digital techniques. All in a style that appeals to a lot of people. And not just tourists. Many Amsterdammers have a Mark Raven hanging on their wall.

Accessible for every budget Kiosk on Museumplein Mark’s work was liked right from the beginning. So much even, that the city council helped him to a studio right on the Museumplein in the form of a rebuild flower stall. “One of the busiest places in the city, so I am still amongst my people.” The stall is still there. Mark wanted his art to be accessible for everyone, and so he began to print t-shirts and posters with his work. “I would like it if everyone could enjoy my view of Amsterdam,” he simply says.

Nowadays, apart from the kiosk on Museumplein, he has a gallery slash shop on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, a fabulous location right behind Dam square next to Magna Plaza. On the ground floor you can buy t-shirts, posters, postcards and other articles, all with the recognizable Mark Raven art. Upstairs, you can find original prints, some printed in a limited edition, others not. This is for the reason that, despite his enormous success, Mark Raven wants to be attainable for every budget. “My boxes with coasters are very popular with backpackers. I like that: in this way, my view on Amsterdam will spread all around the world.”

Old Town

Area 4 Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. Although not appreciated by everyone, a tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. The Zeedijk and China Town Close to Central station you will find one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam: the Zeedijk. The place is swarming with restaurants, cafés and Indonesian shops (tokos). The Zeedijk is the centre of China Town; the Peking ducks hang behind the windows and a large Buddhist temple colours the street scene. From midday you will increasingly smell aromas that make your mouth water. Pull up a chair in one of the smaller Chinese restaurants. This is where Chinese Amsterdammers (or Amsterdam Chinese) eat too. Is there a line somewhere? Then the wait is very probably highly worthwhile! Red light district The Red Light district covers the area between Zeedijk and Warmoesstraat. As soon as dusk falls and the shining red light greets you, the atmosphere is loose and laid back here. The ladies behind the windows wink playfully are friendly and wave to the merry passers-by. Do you want to get your breath back for a moment from all the impressions? There are plenty of pubs to recover while enjoying a beer. Oude Kerksplein (Old Church Square) The Oude Kerksplein is special place in the heart of the Red Light district. The 14th century church is the oldest building still standing in Amsterdam. There’s a bronze statue on the square in honour of the prostitutes who have been active in this area for centuries. This lady is called ‘Belle’.

Tips! • Try turning onto Spooksteeg from Zeedijk and cross the bridge for a fantastic ‘keyhole’ view of Amsterdam • There is lots to see and do around Zeedijk too. There are some great Asian stores on Geldersekade and Nieuwmarkt is bursting with life. • Short on time? Zeedijk is an ideal place to start and end a day in Amsterdam. • The Chinese temple is free to visit and is open every day.

Zeedijk lies in the historic centre of Amsterdam, within five minutes’ walk of Amsterdam Central Station. As soon as you turn the corner, you will taste the history and be tempted by special little shops and the smells of delicious fresh food coming from every direction - particularly at the Chinatown end of the street.

Stories straight from the heart You will be able to see how strong the bond is between shop owners, restaurateurs and café owners and Amsterdammers in the expressive film which will be shown in cafés and shops all over Zeedijk until midOctober. ‘Favourite customers’ each get two minutes to explain what keeps them coming back to Zeedijk - to their favourite shop, café or restaurant. The stories come straight from the heart and are all interesting, endearing, moving or hilarious. Anyone who spends a day on Zeedijk will inevitably get to see and hear a lot of the stories. 21

Zeedijk used to be right at the heart of Amsterdam’s port area. Sailors would come here to find a bed for the night, food, drink, company and other amusement. Today’s travellers and tourists also enjoy spending a day on Zeedijk. And who can blame them? With its unusual shops, great eateries, nightlife and, of course, Chinatown, there’s always something to experience! Zeedijk is absolutely part of Amsterdam’s historic centre. One place where you can get a sense of that lively history is Zeedijk 1, in café In ’t Aepjen. This wooden building dates back to 1544 and supposedly inspired a well-known Dutch saying, ‘In de aap gelogeerd zijn’, which means to be staying at the aap or, less literally, to be up the creek without a paddle. Another ‘brown café’ with its own story is Het Mandje, Amsterdam’s very first gay bar. Chinatown In the 1950s, Amsterdam’s Chinese population began to settle on and around Zeedijk in numbers. The first Chinese were brought to Amsterdam in 1911 as cheap labour. Forced by the economic crisis of the 1930s and the arrival of motorised ships, they went looking for other sources of income. Amsterdam’s Chinatown owes its Chinese specialist stores, Chinese health shops and authentic Chinese kitchens to these developments. Plus, of course, there is its splendid Chinese Buddhist temple. A neighbourhood with personality The 1970s and ’80s were turbulent times for Zeedijk. The port activities had shifted to the west of Amsterdam and the neighbourhood was now swamped with heroin dealers. It was even officially declared an emergency area. These days, there is no sign of that anymore. On the contrary! Thanks to the fact that local

people tackled its problems together, Zeedijk has developed into a particularly pleasant street with a real sense of solidarity among business owners, residents and visitors, many of whom are regulars. Eating and drinking Each one of the cafés, lunchrooms, tearooms and restaurants has something special about it, in terms of both the interiors and the menus: if you like personal, small-scale, homemade and fresh from the oven food, you’ll find it hard to make a choice. Fortunately, Zeedijk is open for business from breakfast to dinner and from high tea to dessert. Night owls, too, are well catered for: the nightclubs and cafés keep their doors open until the early hours. Something to see everywhere The shops all have their own look and stories too. This makes a Zeedijk a miniature heaven for lovers of craftsmanship, collectors of special products and everyone who enjoys feasting their eyes. It is a case of taking your time and keeping your eyes open as you stroll around, otherwise you will miss a lot. Those who do this will be rewarded by the many specialist shops offering everything from designer toys, special underwear and cool trainers to fetish clothing, comic books from all over the world and designer fashion. A five-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, you will get to Dam Square. Here you will find the Palace and the Vrijheidsbeeld (National Monument). In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. Architecture and urban design Present and past have been brought together in the architecture and the urban design of the Docklands. The harbour feeling is still alive, but old warehouses have been given new functions and the diverging designs of various artists link up with each other perfectly. Admire the special houses on KNSM island, walk across the whole Java island via the pedestrian bridges and take a look at the Whale (or Sphinx) on the Sporenbrug on Borneo island. IJburg is absolutely worth a visit for architectural buffs. The urban design scheme here is based on the ‘collage city concept’. The island consists of 8 neighbourhoods, each of which has its own individual character. Going out and music The Docklands attract many artistic people, so it comes as no surprise that when it comes to culture and going out there is plenty to do here. It’s mainly about contemporary classical music in the Music Building (Muziekgebouw) on IJ lake (a ten-minute walk from the back of the Central Station). The Bim house (Bim huis), that protrudes on the street side of the Music Building is a concert hall for jazz and improvised music. When you cross the IJ with the Ferry (Pont) from the back of the railway station, you get to another striking building: the Netherlands EYE Film Institute. The collection of the EYE comprises the complete film history.

Amsterdam Drawing 2013 An art fair for original works on paper NDSM Wharf in Amsterdam North from Thursday 19 through Sunday 22 September 2013 Amsterdam Drawing 2013, from Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 September, is the second edition of an annual art fair for original wokrs on paper. Like last year the location will be the NDSM Wharf in Amsterdam North which can easily be reached by ferry from the backside of Central Station. The fair will take place in a specially build, temporary pavilion of some 1.200 square meters. For Amsterdam Drawing 2013 40 galleries have been invited, amongst which several from outside of the Netherlands. Compared to last year the number of participating galleries has more than doubled, including galeries from Japan, Belgium, Germany, Swiss, France and the UK. The defined area of works on paper in visual arts has a dedicated group of followers around the world. To a lot of artists, paper is a favourite carrier and to a smaller group it is the only carrier. The fact that a drawing, collage, water colour or painting on paper necessarily brings the artist physically closer to the material he or she uses results in an intimate experience for the viewer. Infidel is the first exhibition of Tim Hetherington (1970-2011) in the Netherlands. Foam presents a mixture of his photographs and videos, drawn from his series Sleeping Soldiers, Infidel and Diary. In his work Hetherington focused on the experience of war from the perspective of the individual. Through his photographs, writing and films, Hetherington provides us with new ways to look at and think about human suffering as a result of war, both from the perspective of ordinary soldiers as well as the civilians caught up in the conflict. Infidel consists of large-scale images of the Korengal Valley in Afghanistan, taken to set the scene, as well as intimate portraits of the American troops stationed there. The photographs were taken

over a period of one year in 2007-2008, during which Hetherington managed to get incredibly close to the soldiers. Describing the photographs in Infidel, Hetherington said: “It’s all about the men. I didn’t want to pretend this was [...] about the war in Afghanistan. It was a conscious decision. [It] comments on the experience of the soldier. It’s brotherhood. The flow of pictures is to introduce you to the Korengal Valley first and then to see the men in an intimate way…To get to know them and how they lived. Then you see them in combat in the traditional combat style. Finally, you see them as young men, sleeping.” The exhibition has been produced in close cooperation with Yossi Milo Gallery in New York, and has been made possible with the support of the Sem Presser Fund. When they meet a pedlar who displays his products, Jeannot can no longer resist the temptation. He buys a lottery ticket to be able to buy all these beautiful things. When it turns out he has become a millionaire, he seems to lose not only his dear Jeannette, but also his ideals... Jacques Offenbach wrote ‘No. 66!’ (The Castle in the Air) in 1856 for his own small theatre, the Bouffes Parisiens. Kings, merchants and artists visited this wooden auction hall at the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Now, this unknown opéra-comique can be seen in a former blacksmith’s - the theatre of the Amsterdam Marionette Theatre.

16th edition of the Grachtenfestival is themed ‘On a journey’ Grachtenfestival From 16 till 25 August - free entrance The Saxophone Orchestra will perform on Tuesday 20 August in the garden of Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam (Opening March 2014) Every year the Grachtenfestival transforms Amsterdam into the world’s largest concert podium, hosting ten days of classical music at unique locations all through the city. This year’s 16th edition will be presenting more than 170 concerts at nearly 90 venues. The theme is ‘On a journey’. Concerts and venues alike will reflect this theme. To begin with, there’s the concert to be played on the Holland America Line’s De Prinsendam cruise ship on Monday, 19 August. In a Grachtenfestival exclusive, the ship will be opened to the public on this one occasion for a concert by the Spanish duo Guillermo Colloza (tuba) and Victor Belmonte (trombone). When on the ship, the public is no longer on Dutch territory. Another unusual venue has been found inside a section of Amsterdam Central Station that is still under construction and normally not open to the public. zaanse schans With its traditional green painted houses, warehouses and windmills the Zaanse Schans gives the feeling of having stepped back into the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries. However this is not an open air museum but a colourful living and working neighbourhood. Most of the buildings were re-located from other areas in the Zaanstreek in the 1960’s and 70’s as owing to urban development they were under threat of obliteration. The Zaanse Schans offers a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape as it was before and after the industrial revolution. This panorama makes the Zaanse Schans a vital link in the European Route of Industrial Heritage. Windmills A visit to a working industrial windmill is a unique experience. Paint mill De Kat and oil mill De Zoeker are open daily from March to October. From November to February most of the windmills at the Zaanse Schans are only open at the weekends. The Jonge Schaap is open all year. Museums The Zaanse Schans has a number of fascinating museums to tempt the visitor. The Zaans Musuem has a large collection of interesting artefacts and presents a variety of changing exhibitions.
