City of Amsterdam Where to begin? That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you the Amsterdam Journal has divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. Each area has its own character. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown (referring to the dark wood interiors) pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands (Museumkwartier – Museum Quarter), large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops (Centrum (Centre), de Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rem-
brandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)

AREA 1 Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. In the past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot! Authentic working class area You can wander around through the streets and side streets in a relaxed way and enjoy the spontaneous and relaxed atmosphere. You can experience the typical atmosphere of the Jordaan, in streets like Westerstraat, Tweede Anjeliersdwarsstraat, Tweede Tuindwarsstraat and around the Noordermarkt. On Saturdays you will find the best organic farmer’s market of Amsterdam on the Noordermarkt, directly opposite the Noorderkerk (Noorder church).
Pubs/Bars and shops When you walk from the Noorderkerk to the Westerkerk (Western church) – the recognizable church that has a blue-red crown on its tower - , you will automatically get to the Westermarkt. Here you will find the monument for gay people (1987), consisting of three large pink granite triangles. From here you can go straight onto Rozengracht (Rozen canal). This shopping street is very well-liked because of its diversity of nice shops.
Anne Frank house Also not far from the Westerkerk, you can take a look in the Anne Frank’s Achterhuis. Behind a closet that turns out to be a door, you will find the small house where she wrote in her diary. Very oppressive.
The real pub life ‘Gezellig. This Dutch word – that can barely be translated properly -, applies perfectly to the typical (brown) pubs in the Jordaan. The atmosphere is easy-going, the people are spontaneous and speak with a very broad Amsterdam accent. You will regularly hear the sound of original Dutch music.
TIPS! • Do you want to visit the Anne Frank House (Prinsengracht 267)? Be there on time and prepare for serious waiting times. • Find Dutch conviviality in one of the over 60 (brown) cafés in the Jordaan. • Visit the fabric market (Lapjesmarkt) on the Noordermarkt: Mondays 8.00 – 14.00 hours. • Feel like going on a shopping spree? At the edge of the Jordaan you will find the Haarlemmerstraat and the Haarlemmerdijk with many contemporary and unique and edgy clothes shops. 10

The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) are located in the heart of Amsterdam, in a part of the old city centre. Here you can both feel and see the history of Amsterdam. The nine streets are unique for their diversity and history but at the same time have managed to incorporate the splendour of the past with a taste of the present.

All shops are represented in these nine unique and distinctive streets.
N ot f ar behind D am S q uare, betw een the w ell- k now n ring of canals, you w ill find nine small streets f ull of small sp ecialist shop s, boutiq ues and galleries. T he three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a k ilometre long, but mak e no mistak e! Y ou can easily lose yourself here f or a day. Pleasant, unique and bold In former times the workshops of craftsmen could be found in Reestraat, Berenstraat, Runstraat, Hartenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Huidenstraat, Gasthuismolensteeg, Oude Spiegelstraat and Wijde Heisteeg. Nowadays the small streets are full of specialist shops. If you want to snap up something special, you are bound to be successful here. Contrary to the large shops in the city centre, nothing is standard here. Except the more easy-going atmosphere and the great amount of creativity.
Vintage, chic, second-hand and everything in between The collections of the shops show that the owners are passionate enthusiasts. Many of them have made their hobby their job. If you love clothes with just something special, you can indulge yourself in the more than fifty clothes shops. No sameness here, but mainly colourful, chic, trendy, exciting, vintage or second-hand clothes. The second-hand shops in the Nine Streets are famous for vintage, chic and secondhand clothes in Amsterdam by the way.
Unlike anything else All the shops really show sincere interests: shoe shops with unusual collections, a sock shop for men, specialised bookshops, a cheese shop with hundreds of different types of cheeses and have you ever seen a White Teeth shop before? 14

A uniq ue characteristic of the nine streets is that you will not find any chain stores here; in fact almost all of the stores in the nine streets are speciality stores of some kind. F rom cheese to chocolates, fancy dress to second-hand clothing, antiq ues to art deco, tearooms and lunchrooms to bars; kitsch, retro and loungy are all represented in these nine uniq ue and distinctive streets. “ The whole world is built around Amsterdam” wrote the world famous in Holland poet J oost van den V ondel in the seventeenth century. This century - being the D utch Golden Age - was for Amsterdam a previously unexperienced period of prosperity. P eople came to the city for business or a decent living. The old town area became too small, so an extension was inevitable and three new main canals were dug out: Heren-, K eiz ers- and P rinsengracht. Between them cross-canals and -streets. The q uarter of ‘ 9 Streets’ was constructed in the first half of the 1 7 th century and was
from the beginning until now dominated by trade and culture. The names of the streets remind us of the old artisans dealing with all kinds of skins for the leatherindustry. The area permits a general view of the architecture of all kinds of houses. Among these houses are the beautiful V ingboon-Houses and the building ‘ F elix Meritis’ . The F elix Meritis-building dates from 1 7 8 7 . It was ordered by the F elix Meritis-Society. This society was guided by the enlightenment and the ideals of those days. In this building the first Amsterdam ( oval) concert-hall was constructed. By means of concerts, lessons and tests the public was actively involved. With a short intermission it has always cleared the way for cultural purposes. Wolfgang Amadeus Moz art was heard in the no longer exisiting municipal theater on the K eiz ersgracht. On the Herengracht you’ ll find the Biblical Museum. The collection is q uite diverse with in its heart the Book itself ( the oldest dating from 1 4 7 7 ) , an important number of temple models, archeological finds from
Egypt and so on.In the Gasthuismolensteeg nr. 7 you will find the D utch Spectacles Museum. It reveals the history of spectacles over 7 0 0 years. In the neighbourhood of our q uarter of the ‘ 9 Streets’ is the Royal P alace, the former Town Hall, built in 1 6 4 8 , the Westerkerk where Rembrandt was buried and the Anne F rank House in which the F rank family was hiding from l9 4 2 until l9 4 4 . Here Anne wrote her famous diary. V isit us and find for yourself that our ‘ 9 Streets’ are an ideal framework to explore Amsterdam in all it’ s facets and richness. Moreover you’ ll have the experience that our q uarter itself is an exclusive shopping area with an unmatched range of shops, studios, restaurants and hotels.
TIPS! • On de9straatjes.nl/uk/ you can see the amount of specialised shops • Most shops in the Nine Streets are also open on Sundays, after 12.00 hours. • There are various small cafés in the Nine Streets that sell healthy sandwiches, smoothies, cheesecake and other goodies.

There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes. Where to begin? Rijksmuseum (National Museum) In this impressive monumental building dating from 1 8 8 5 you will find the famous masterpieces of D utch and F lemish painters from the fifteenth up to and including the nineteenth century. Here you will also find Rembrandt’ s world-famous Night Watch ( 1 6 5 0 ) . Other masters to be found here are: J an Steen, F rans Hals and J ohannes V ermeer. After a long renovation project the Rijksmuseum has been open again completely since April.
Van Gogh Museum When you walk through this museum you clearly see how this painter developed. As sombre as the paintings are that he made in the Netherlands, so colourful and vivid are the works that he made on F rench soil. Y ou will also find works of contemporaries like Monet and Gauguin in the museum.
Stedelijk Museum (Municipal Museum) The Stedelijk Museum, established in 1 8 7 4 , has a large collection of classical, modern and contemporary art. The museum owns about 9 0 .0 0 0 objects from practically all important 2 0 th and 2 1 st century schools.
Concertgebouw (Concert building)
TIPS! • If you don’t like waiting, you just order your Museum tickets online. • During the concert season (mid-September to the end of June) a free lunch concert is given in the Concertgebouw on Wednesdays: between 12.00 and 12.30 hours. • High Society shopping: parallel to Museumplein you will find the most stylish and most expensive shopping street of the Netherlands: P.C. Hooftstraat.
In 1 8 8 8 the first concert took place in this famous Concert building. The acoustics in the building are extraordinary. In 2 0 1 3 the Concertgebouw is celebrating its 1 2 5 th anniversary. Every month of the J ubilee year a different period from the history of the Concertgebouw are central.
Browsing around in antique shops Together with the adjacent Nieuwe Spiegelstraat, Spiegelgracht ( opposite the Rijksmuseum) makes up the heart of the Spiegelkwartier; an area with many antiq ue shops and galleries.

Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. Although not appreciated by everyone, a tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. The Zeedijk and China Town Close to Central station you will find one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam: the Z eedijk. The place is swarming with restaurants, café s and Indonesian shops ( tokos) . The Z eedijk is the centre of China Town; the P eking ducks hang behind the windows and a large Buddhist temple colours the street scene. F rom midday you will increasingly smell aromas that make your mouth water. P ull up a chair in one of the smaller Chinese restaurants. This is where Chinese Amsterdammers ( or Amsterdam Chinese) eat too. Is there a line somewhere? Then the wait is very probably highly worthwhile!
Red light district The Red L ight district covers the area between Z eedijk and Warmoesstraat. As soon as dusk falls and the shining red light greets you, the atmosphere is loose and laid back here. The ladies behind the windows wink playfully are friendly and wave to the merry passersby. D o you want to get your breath back for a moment from all the impressions? There are plenty of pubs to recover while enjoying a beer.
Oude Kerksplein (Old Church Square) The Oude K erksplein is special place in the heart of the Red L ight district. The 1 4 th century church is the oldest building still standing in Amsterdam. There’ s a bronz e statue on the sq uare in honour of the prostitutes who have been active in this area for centuries. This lady is called ‘ Belle’ .
TIPS! • Try turning onto Spooksteeg from Zeedijk and cross the bridge for a fantastic ‘keyhole’ view of Amsterdam • There is lots to see and do around Zeedijk too. There are some great Asian stores on Geldersekade and Nieuwmarkt is bursting with life. • Short on time? Zeedijk is an ideal place to start and end a day in Amsterdam. • The Chinese temple is free to visit and is open every day.

A PROPER NEIGHBOURHOOD WITH ITS OWN PERSONALITY Zeedijk used to be right at the heart of Amsterdam’s port area. Sailors would come here to find a bed for the night, food, drink, company and other amusement. Today’s travellers and tourists also enjoy spending a day on Zeedijk. And who can blame them? With its unusual shops, great eateries, nightlife and, of course, Chinatown, there’s always something to experience! Zeedijk is absolutely part of Amsterdam’s historic centre. One place where you can get a sense of that lively history is Zeedijk 1, in café In ’t Aepjen. This wooden building dates back to 1544 and supposedly inspired a well-known Dutch saying, ‘In de aap gelogeerd zijn’, which means to be staying at the aap or, less literally, to be up the creek without a paddle. Another ‘brown café’ with its own story is Het Mandje, Amsterdam’s very first gay bar.
people tackled its problems together, Zeedijk has developed into a particularly pleasant street with a real sense of solidarity among business owners, residents and visitors, many of whom are regulars.
Chinatown
made and fresh from the oven food, you’ll find it hard to make a choice. Fortunately, Zeedijk is open for business from breakfast to dinner and from high tea to dessert. Night owls, too, are well catered for: the nightclubs and cafés keep their doors open until the early hours. Visit Casablanca on the Zeedijk 24 see page 54
In the 1950s, Amsterdam’s Chinese population began to settle on and around Zeedijk in numbers. The first Chinese were brought to Amsterdam in 1911 as cheap labour. Forced by the economic crisis of the 1930s and the arrival of motorised ships, they went looking for other sources of income. Amsterdam’s Chinatown owes its Chinese specialist stores, Chinese health shops and authentic Chinese kitchens to these developments. Plus, of course, there is its splendid Chinese Buddhist temple.
A neighbourhood with personality The 1970s and ’80s were turbulent times for Zeedijk. The port activities had shifted to the west of Amsterdam and the neighbourhood was now swamped with heroin dealers. It was even officially declared an emergency area. These days, there is no sign of that anymore. On the contrary! Thanks to the fact that local

Artist Mark Raven
and his Contemporary City Impressions
Text: Sarah Saarberg
It is obvious that the artist Mark Raven loves his birthplace by each and every work he has made of Amsterdam. This city never ceases to captivate and inspire him. Mark’s work is modern and wayward, but is unmistakably connected to this versatile and interesting capitol of ours. If Marks Raven’s father had had his way, Mark would have become a journalist. At the time, he followed his advice and went to the school for journalism. But he clearly was destined for other things. The artist explains his chosen medium: “The image, as means of communication, is far more appealing to me than text. Moreover, an image is universal. Everyone understands it.” And so, Mark installed himself as a street artist on a rug in the tunnel underneath the Rijksmuseum to capture the city in every way. “I love the city. But I love people too. I immediately want to show them what I make.”
Rembrandt and Escher Over the years, the art he has made, developed from highly detailed pen-and-ink drawings to a wilder and more suggestive play with lines. In his early days, Mark worked in the tradition of Rembrandt’s etchings and M.C. Escher’s graphic work, but gradually generated his modern touch. Mark combines traditional etching techniques with painting and modern graphic and digital techniques. All in a style that appeals to a lot of people. And not just tourists. Many Amsterdammers have a Mark Raven hanging on their wall.
Accessible for every budget Kiosk on Museumplein Mark’s work was liked right from the beginning. So much even, that the city council helped him to a studio right on the Museumplein in the form of a rebuild flower stall. “One of the busiest places in the city, so I am still amongst my people.” The stall is still there. Mark wanted his art to be accessible for everyone, and so he began to print t-shirts and posters with his work. “I would like it if everyone could enjoy my view of Amsterdam,” he simply says.
Nowadays, apart from the kiosk on Museumplein, he has a gallery slash shop on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, a fabulous location right behind Dam square next to Magna Plaza. On the ground floor you can buy t-shirts, posters, postcards and other articles, all with the recognizable Mark Raven art. Upstairs, you can find original prints, some printed in a limited edition, others not. This is for the reason that, despite his enormous success, Mark Raven wants to be attainable for every budget. “My boxes with coasters are very popular with backpackers. I like that: in this way, my view on Amsterdam will spread all around the world.”

I n the p ast fif ty years Amsterdam’s harbour activ ities hav e mov ed to the w est of the city. As a result sp ace to liv e op ened up along the I J lak e. T he architecture is strik ing and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the f uture. Architecture and urban design Present and past have been brought together in the architecture and the urban design of the Docklands. The harbour feeling is still alive, but old warehouses have been given new functions and the diverging designs of various artists link up with each other perfectly. Admire the special houses on KNSM island, walk across the whole Java island via the pedestrian bridges and take a look at the Whale (or Sphinx) on the Sporenbrug on Borneo island. IJburg is absolutely worth a visit for architectural buffs. The urban design scheme here is based on the ‘collage city concept’. The island consists of 8 neighbourhoods, each of which has its own individual character.
Going out and music The Docklands attract many artistic people, so it comes as no surprise that when it comes to culture and going out there is plenty to do here. It’s mainly about contemporary classical music in the Music Building (Muziekgebouw) on IJ lake (a ten-minute walk from the back of the Central Station). The Bim house (Bim huis), that protrudes on the street side of the Music Building is a concert hall for jazz and improvised music. When you cross the IJ with the Ferry (Pont) from the back of the railway station, you get to another striking building: the Netherlands EYE Film Institute. The collection of the EYE comprises the complete film history.
TIPS! • Take a guided walk (also in the English language) on the Eastern Docklands • Visit the permanent showing in the basement of the EYE Film Institute Nederland for free. • Pay a visit to the beautiful Maritime Museum and get on board a replica of a VOC ship. (Kattenburgerplein 1) • Enjoy the sun on the roof terrace of the Nemo Science Centre (free of charge) or be surprised in this museum about technology and science. The Entertainer Toneelgroep Amsterdam Marnixstraat 427 | www.tga.nl Surtitles on Thursdays 22, 29 May 2014 The Entertainer is a portrayal of the Rice family, spanning three generations of vaudeville artists who are finding it increasingly di cult to secure their position in the midst of the fast-changing world. In the Rice family that’s depraved of all illusion, Osborne depicts granddaughter Jean as the only hope for the future: she refuses to be a martyr and rejects nostalgic gabbling and blaming convenient enemies. Conversations between the grandfather Billy and his granddaughter Jean alternate with performances by his son Archie, whose sarcastic songs hold a mirror up to his audience. When the family comes together and the liquor kicks in, news of the death of Archie’s son Mick – killed in action overseas – leaves all its members feeling utterly adrift. 40

American artist in Amsterdam Debra Hill has been living in Amsterdam for the last 30 years. Originally from San Francisco this expat is making her mark in an evolutionary colorful way on the Amsterdam art scene…

Debra who has been selling her works in Amsterdam for more than 25 years and has had her share of traveling. I just love living here I guess never left says Debra. I love riding my bike along the canals and all the crooked houses and cobble stone. Now I’ve opened a new gallery /shop on one of the oldest streets in the city. The Zeedijk has an amazing history and spirit of it’s own. Amsterdam is a wonderful city to live and paint in. Watery blues and greens with, vivid skies on a moon lite night. And the never ending bicycles! Positively inspiring. Amsterdam is a wonderful city to live and paint in. Watery blues and greens with, vivid skies on a moon lite night. And the never ending bicycles! Positively inspiring. I went back to night school to study graphic technics but these days I still mostly paint and draw. I just love to make things and I’ve always been busy with creative projects from punk rock clothing and posters to theater décor to miniature water color paintings that I sold in the tunnel under the city famous Rijks museum in the mid 80ties before the big 10 year renovation. And the city recognized her talent too and made it possible for her to sell her works in a permanent kiosk near the museums. It’s there, in the little park on the corner of the Leidseplein bridge, under two of the biggest trees in the city that for the last 25 years Debra has made a fabulous reputation, with her original style, limited issue fine art prints and fashionable, high quality silkscreened city art t-shirts. Next to her fine arts both shops sell prints, posters, framed miniatures and t-shirts in all sizes. Something for everyone. Her colorful whimsical city impressions are fabulous. With pet names like the “Crazy Bridges “and “Mellow Yellow Jordaan” you get the impression of a fun loving artist who loves what she does. Life’s a canvas paint it!

ZAANSE SCHANS With its traditional green painted houses, warehouses and windmills the Zaanse Schans gives the feeling of having stepped back into the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries. However this is not an open air museum but a colourful living and working neighbourhood. Most of the buildings were re-located from other areas in the Zaanstreek in the 1960’s and 70’s as owing to urban development they were under threat of obliteration. The Zaanse Schans offers a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape as it was before and after the industrial revolution. This panorama makes the Zaanse Schans a vital link in the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

Whatever your taste is, Amsterdam has it. Amsterdam has all the nightlife you would expect. There are intimate restaurants, bars with or without live music, hip dance clubs, comedy clubs, and a casino. A complete list would fill a whole book, so we can only give you some recommendations here.
bars | live music
restaurants | cafés As one might expect from a cosmopolitan city, Amsterdam not only offers the possibility of enjoying classical French cuisine, but since a few decades the city has also abounded in - sometimes surprisingly good - Greek, Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese, Korean and even Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants. This fact has caused the extensive, daily public market in Albert Cuypstraat to adapt its range to the purchasing requirements of these restaurants. For a quick cheap lunchtime bite try the sandwich shops, the chips stands or herring stalls. Eating maatjes (‘mates’) herring is quite possibly the only important culinary tradition of our otherwise in this respect poorly endowed country. Amsterdam is also a city with many bars and cafés, some 1,500 in all. Each of the areas mentioned below has something to offer, from friendly and relaxed brown cafés, stylish grand cafés to crowded designer bars. The cafés and bars vary greatly and have their own special attraction: a wide range of beers, jenever (Dutch gin), live music, canalside terraces, board games, pool tables or just good old fun.
Jordaan The most easy-going area of the city hosts a great number of outstanding restaurants and bars, from classical French cuisine, Thai food to Tapas bars. Something can be found to everyone’s taste. Rembrandtplein Observed by the cast-iron statue of Amsterdam’s most famous painter lies Rembrandtplein. This place is bustling with places to eat and drink. Some of the most beautiful grand cafés are located here, like Schiller withits marvellous art deco interior. Utrechtsestraat area This narrow street has a special atmosphere and is known for its gift shops and international restaurants. Before dining, you can unwind with a drink on a terrace on Rembrandtplein. Reguliersdwarsstraat As far as gay nightlife is concerned, without a doubt, the Reguliersdwarsstraat is the hippest street in town. However, some of the best restaurants are located here. Leidseplein Leidseplein is Amsterdam’s centre of entertainment, with its many bars, nightclubs, theatres, music halls and hotels. Of course there are many different types of restaurants here.
Amsterdam has some great small bars where you enter for free and or a small fee to listen to live music. Singer-songwriters, jazz, pop, folk or even classical music. You just have to know where to go.
cocktails | dinner The Venice of the North, Amsterdam’s attractions are considerable. Besides the famed red-light areas where windowshopping takes on a whole new meaning and the coffee bars that are more popular for their other wares, Amsterdam is also home to hundreds of great bars and clubs: style bars, cocktail bars, bistros, restaurants and casinos, and the famous brown cafes where you can linger long over a beer and watch the people of Amsterdam go about their business. Once you’ve visited the museum quarter and taken a tour of the canals, you can hit the town. A night out in the many bars of Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein should see you into the small hours.
dinner | clubs Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to groove. In Amsterdam you can party all night long, nearly every night of the week! Have a look at the listings below - whether you’re into techno, drum & bass, top 40, hip-hop or anything in between, you’ll find a club to match your mood.

MUSIC & THEATRE
Casablanca is located on the Zeedijk at the Northern brink of Old Town. Live jazz performances on stage happens every Monday to Thursday, and more or less every week the jazz loving crowd gets to shake heads and snap fingers to improvisations and big-band performances from Amsterdam’s jazz elite. Decades of jazz, dancing, drinking and stomping have given the venue a worn-out cozy atmosphere. There are not many seats to find, and on a crowded night you will have a hard time even locating a place to stand. Though, squeezing together between the big-band sized stage and the bar is a cozy way to spend the night! The live music continues a bit past midnight, and is followed by recorded jazz- and occasional blues music to 3 am weekdays. Besides Casablanca Music, there is Casablanca VariÊtÊ Theatre, a circus cafÊ for all European circus artists to meet. You can have dinner here, choosing from a variety of meat and fish, and enjoy performances in the old-fashioned theatre circus. Open Tuesday till Saturday. AN IMPRESSION ABOUT AMSTERDAMS ELDEST RED LIGHT DISTRICT The Red Light District in Amsterdam is visited by more than 4 million visitors each year who are curious to know what goes on behind the closed curtains. The Red Light District is very close to the Dam Square. Here Amsterdam started of as a settlement around a dam in the river Amstel at the end of the 12th century. Let’s be honest Prostitution has enjoyed a long tradition of tolerance in Amsterdam. Safety is key here. In addition to preventing forced prostitution, the aim is an open and honest approach. Sex-workers here have their own union, plenty of police protection, an information centre (for visitors as well), frequent monitoring and testing and professional standards. The Amsterdam city centre has a romantic image. But behind the exciting, unconventional, ‘anything goes’ image of the city centre lurks a different reality a reality that sometimes consist of sex trafficking, forced prostitution. This is something that the city and the justice department are fighting against.
Changing the heart of Amsterdam New opportunities are setting in place a future for the city centre. The Amsterdam municipal council’s1012 project aims to discourage crime and corruption in the city centre by reducing the types of businesses that are conducive to crime and by permitting prostitution in just two areas. Together with local residents, business proprietors and investors, the municipal council is working to strengthen the area’s unique character and stimulate an economic upgrade.
Visiting the Red Light District The area is bustling with visitors and groups of tourists. It is best to travel in a pair or in a group, as the area also attracts some seedier characters. Grab a map and venture out or if you’re keen to learn more take one of the many specialised tours.

DAY
26 APRIL KING’S ! What to do on King’s Day or King’s Night? Go to King’s Night in Amsterdam. The fun traditionally begins on the eve of the big day. It’s a night with many parties. Enjoy the atmosphere on the streets and the best parties. Go to the free market in Amsterdam. This market gives everyone and their mum the chance to sell their second-hand things on the streets and parks of Amsterdam. Go to the canals of Amsterdam. Never has gridlock traffic been so much fun! On King’s Day, thousands of brightly decorated boats pack the narrow Amsterdam canals. The next best thing to being on one of the boats is watching - and dancing - from one of the many bridges. Go to the King’s Day party’s of Amsterdam. You can go to free King’s Day party’s or to some party’s where you need some tickets for. Or you can go to Amsterdam and celebrate King’s Day on the streets. If you want to go to the party’s were you need to buy ticket, you have to buy your tickets quickly. For the children there is also much to do. They can participate in many different activities. They can do some games, or they can be painted up. King’s Day is a great day for kids.
