City of Amsterdam Where to begin? That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you the Amsterdam Journal has divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. Each area has its own character. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown (referring to the dark wood interiors) pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands (Museumkwartier – Museum Quarter), large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops (Centrum (Centre), de Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!) 9

Jordaan

Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. In the past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot! Authentic working class area You can wander around through the streets and side streets in a relaxed way and enjoy the spontaneous and relaxed atmosphere. You can experience the typical atmosphere of the Jordaan, in streets like Westerstraat, Tweede Anjeliersdwarsstraat, Tweede Tuindwarsstraat and around the Noordermarkt. On Saturdays you will find the best organic farmer’s market of Amsterdam on the Noordermarkt, directly opposite the Noorderkerk (Noorder church).

Pubs/Bars and shops When you walk from the Noorderkerk to the Westerkerk (Western church) – the recognizable church that has a blue-red crown on its tower - , you will automatically get to the Westermarkt. Here you will find the monument for gay people (1987), consisting of three large pink granite triangles. From here you can go straight onto Rozengracht (Rozen canal). This shopping street is very well-liked because of its diversity of nice shops.

Anne Frank house Also not far from the Westerkerk, you can take a look in the Anne Frank’s Achterhuis. Behind a closet that turns out to be a door, you will find the small house where she wrote in her diary. Very oppressive.

The real pub life ‘Gezellig. This Dutch word – that can barely be translated properly -, applies perfectly to the typical (brown) pubs in the Jordaan. The atmosphere is easy-going, the people are spontaneous and speak with a very broad Amsterdam accent. You will regularly hear the sound of original Dutch music.

TIPS! • Do you want to visit the Anne Frank House (Prinsengracht 267)? Be there on time and prepare for serious waiting times. • Find Dutch conviviality in one of the over 60 (brown) cafés in the Jordaan. • Visit the fabric market (Lapjesmarkt) on the Noordermarkt: Mondays 8.00 – 14.00 hours. • Feel like going on a shopping spree? At the edge of the Jordaan you will find the Haarlemmerstraat and the Haarlemmerdijk with many contemporary and unique and edgy clothes shops.

The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) are located in the heart of Amsterdam, in a part of the old city centre. Here you can both feel and see the history of Amsterdam. The nine streets are unique for their diversity and history but at the same time have managed to incorporate the splendour of the past with a taste of the present.

All shops are represented in these nine unique and distinctive streets. Pleasant, unique and bold In former times the workshops of craftsmen could be found in Reestraat, Berenstraat, Runstraat, Hartenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Huidenstraat, Gasthuismolensteeg, Oude Spiegelstraat and Wijde Heisteeg. Nowadays the small streets are full of specialist shops. If you want to snap up something special, you are bound to be successful here. Contrary to the large shops in the city centre, nothing is standard here. Except the more easy-going atmosphere and the great amount of creativity.

than fifty clothes shops. No sameness here, but mainly colourful, chic, trendy, exciting, vintage or second-hand clothes. The second-hand shops in the Nine Streets are famous for vintage, chic and second-hand clothes in Amsterdam by the way.

Unlike anything else All the shops really show sincere interests: shoe shops with unusual collections, a sock shop for men, specialised bookshops, a cheese shop with hundreds of different types of cheeses and have you ever seen a White Teeth shop before?

TIPS! • On de9straatjes.nl/uk/ you can see the amount of specialised shops • Most shops in the Nine Streets are also open on Sundays, after 12.00 hours. • There are various small cafés in the Nine Streets that sell healthy sandwiches, smoothies, cheesecake and other goodies.

Vintage, chic, second-hand and everything in between The collections of the shops show that the owners are passionate enthusiasts. Many of them have made their hobby their job. If you love clothes with just something special, you can indulge yourself in the more

A unique characteristic of the nine streets is that you will not find any chain stores here; in fact almost all of the stores in the nine streets are speciality stores of some kind. From cheese to chocolates, fancy dress to second-hand clothing, antiques to art deco, tearooms and lunchrooms to bars; kitsch, retro and loungy are all represented in these nine unique and distinctive streets. “The whole world is built around Amsterdam” wrote the world famous in Holland poet Joost van den Vondel in the seventeenth century. This century - being the Dutch Golden Age - was for Amsterdam a previously unexperienced period of prosperity. People came to the city for business or a decent living. The old town area became too small, so an extension was inevitable and three new main canals were dug out: Heren-, Keizers- and Prinsengracht. Between them crosscanals and -streets.

The quarter of ‘9 Streets’ was constructed in the first half of the 17th century and was from the beginning until now dominated by trade and culture. The names of the streets remind us of the old artisans dealing with all kinds of skins for the leather-industry. The area permits a general view of the architecture of all kinds of houses. Among these houses are the beautiful Vingboon-Houses and the building ‘Felix Meritis’. The Felix Meritis-building dates from 1787. It was ordered by the Felix MeritisSociety. This society was guided by the enlightenment and the ideals of those days. In this building the first Amsterdam (oval) concert-hall was constructed. By means of concerts, lessons and tests the public was actively involved. With a short intermission it has always cleared the way for cultural purposes. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was heard in the no longer exisiting municipal theater on the Keizersgracht.

On the Herengracht you’ll find the Biblical Museum. The collection is quite diverse with in its heart the Book itself (the oldest dating from 1477), an important number of temple models, archeological finds from Egypt and so on. In the Gasthuismolensteeg nr. 7 you will find the Dutch Spectacles Museum. It reveals the history of spectacles over 700 years. In the neighbourhood of our quarter of the ‘9 Streets’ is the Royal Palace, the former Town Hall, built in 1648, the Westerkerk where Rembrandt was buried and the Anne Frank House in which the Frank family was hiding from l942 until l944. Here Anne wrote her famous diary. Visit us and find for yourself that our ‘9 Streets’ are an ideal framework to explore Amsterdam in all it’s facets and richness. Moreover you’ll have the experience that our quarter itself is an exclusive shopping area with an unmatched range of shops, studios, restaurants and hotels.

Museumkwartier

There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes. Where to begin? Rijksmuseum (National Museum) In this impressive monumental building dating from 1885 you will find the famous masterpieces of Dutch and Flemish painters from the fifteenth up to and including the nineteenth century. Here you will also find Rembrandt’s world-famous Night Watch (1650). Other masters to be found here are: Jan Steen, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer. After a long renovation project the Rijksmuseum has been open again completely since April.

Van Gogh Museum When you walk through this museum you clearly see how this painter developed. As sombre as the paintings are that he made in the Netherlands, so colourful and vivid are the works that he made on French soil. You will also find works of contemporaries like Monet and Gauguin in the museum.

Stedelijk Museum (Municipal Museum) The Stedelijk Museum, established in 1874, has a large collection of classical, modern and contemporary art. The museum owns about 90.000 objects from practically all important 20th and 21st century schools.

Concertgebouw (Concert building) In 1888 the first concert took place in this famous Concert building. The acoustics in the building are extraordinary. In 2013 the Concertgebouw is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Every month of the Jubilee year a different period from the history of the Concertgebouw are central.

Browsing around in antique shops Together with the adjacent Nieuwe Spiegelstraat, Spiegelgracht (opposite the Rijksmuseum) makes up the heart of the Spiegelkwartier; an area with many antique shops and galleries.

TIPS! • If you don’t like waiting, you just order your Museum tickets online. • During the concert season (mid-September to the end of June) a free lunch concert is given in the Concertgebouw on Wednesdays: between 12.00 and 12.30 hours. • High Society shopping: parallel to Museumplein you will find the most stylish and most expensive shopping street of the Netherlands: P.C. Hooftstraat. • Diamond lovers visit the Diamond Museum Amsterdam (Paulus Potterstraat, opposite Museumplein)

Old Town

Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. Although not appreciated by everyone, a tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. The Zeedijk and China Town Close to Central station you will find one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam: the Zeedijk. The place is swarming with restaurants, cafés and Indonesian shops (tokos). The Zeedijk is the centre of China Town; the Peking ducks hang behind the windows and a large Buddhist temple colours the street scene. From midday you will increasingly smell aromas that make your mouth water. Pull up a chair in one of the smaller Chinese restaurants. This is where Chinese Amsterdammers (or Amsterdam Chinese) eat too. Is there a line somewhere? Then the wait is very probably highly worthwhile!

Red light district The Red Light district covers the area between Zeedijk and Warmoesstraat. As soon as dusk falls and the shining red light greets you, the atmosphere is loose and laid back here. The ladies behind the windows wink playfully are friendly and wave to the merry passers-by. Do you want to get your breath back for a moment from all the impressions? There are plenty of pubs to recover while enjoying a beer.

Oude Kerksplein (Old Church Square) The Oude Kerksplein is special place in the heart of the Red Light district. The 14th century church is the oldest building still standing in Amsterdam. There’s a bronze statue on the square in honour of the prostitutes who have been active in this area for centuries. This lady is called ‘Belle’.

TIPS! • Try turning onto Spooksteeg from Zeedijk and cross the bridge for a fantastic ‘keyhole’ view of Amsterdam • There is lots to see and do around Zeedijk too. There are some great Asian stores on Geldersekade and Nieuwmarkt is bursting with life. • Short on time? Zeedijk is an ideal place to start and end a day in Amsterdam. • The Chinese temple is free to visit and is open every day.

SPE CIAL

Zeedijk

A proper neighbourhood with its own personality Zeedijk used to be right at the heart of Amsterdam’s port area. Sailors would come here to find a bed for the night, food, drink, company and other amusement. Today’s travellers and tourists also enjoy spending a day on Zeedijk. And who can blame them? With its unusual shops, great eateries, nightlife and, of course, Chinatown, there’s always something to experience! Zeedijk is absolutely part of Amsterdam’s historic centre. One place where you can get a sense of that lively history is Zeedijk 1, in café In ’t Aepjen. This wooden building dates back to 1544 and supposedly inspired a well-known Dutch saying, ‘In de aap gelogeerd zijn’, which means to be staying at the aap or, less literally, to be up the creek without a paddle. Another ‘brown café’ with its own story is Het Mandje, Amsterdam’s very first gay bar.

Chinatown In the 1950s, Amsterdam’s Chinese population began to settle on and around Zeedijk in numbers. The first Chinese were brought to Amsterdam in 1911 as cheap labour. Forced by the economic crisis of the 1930s and the arrival of motorised ships, they went looking for other sources of income. Amsterdam’s Chinatown owes its Chinese specialist stores, Chinese health shops and authentic Chinese kitchens to these developments. Plus, of course, there is its splendid Chinese Buddhist temple.

A neighbourhood with personality The 1970s and ’80s were turbulent times for Zeedijk. The port activities had shifted to the west of Amsterdam and the neighbourhood was now swamped with heroin dealers. It was even officially declared an emergency area. These days, there is no sign of that anymore. On the contrary! Thanks to the fact that local people tackled its problems together, Zeedijk has developed into a particularly pleasant street with a real sense of solidarity among business owners, residents and visitors, many of whom are regulars.

Eating and drinking Each one of the cafés, lunchrooms, tearooms and restaurants has something special about it, in terms of both the interiors and the menus: if you like personal, smallscale, home-made and fresh from the oven food, you’ll find it hard to make a choice. Fortunately, Zeedijk is open for business from breakfast to dinner and from high tea to dessert. Night owls, too, are well cate-

red for: the nightclubs and cafés keep their doors open until the early hours. Visit Casablanca on the Zeedijk 24 see page 54

Something to see everywhere The shops all have their own look and stories too. This makes a Zeedijk a miniature heaven for lovers of craftsmanship, collectors of special products and everyone who enjoys feasting their eyes. It is a case of taking your time and keeping your eyes open as you stroll around, otherwise you will miss a lot. Those who do this will be rewarded by the many specialist shops offering everything from designer toys, special underwear and cool trainers to fetish clothing, comic books from all over the world and designer fashion. You have been warned: the risk of ‘system overload’ is ever present!

Artist Mark Raven

and his Contemporary City Impressions

Text: Sarah Saarberg

It is obvious that the artist Mark Raven loves his birthplace by each and every work he has made of Amsterdam. This city never ceases to captivate and inspire him. Mark’s work is modern and wayward, but is unmistakably connected to this versatile and interesting capitol of ours. If Marks Raven’s father had had his way, Mark would have become a journalist. At the time, he followed his advice and went to the school for journalism. But he clearly was destined for other things. The artist explains his chosen medium: “The image, as means of communication, is far more appealing to me than text. Moreover, an image is universal. Everyone understands it.” And so, Mark installed himself as a street artist on a rug in the tunnel underneath the Rijksmuseum to capture the city in every way. “I love the city. But I love people too. I immediately want to show them what I make.”

Kiosk on Museumplein Mark’s work was liked right from the beginning. So much even, that the city council helped him to a studio right on the Museumplein in the form of a rebuild flower stall. Mark wanted his art to be accessible for everyone, and so he began to print t-shirts and posters with his work. “I would like it if everyone could enjoy my view of Amsterdam,” he simply says.

in the tradition of Rembrandt’s etchings and M.C. Escher’s graphic work, but gradually generated his modern touch. Mark combines traditional etching techniques with painting and modern graphic and digital techniques. All in a style that appeals to a lot of people. And not just tourists. Many Amsterdammers have a Mark Raven hanging on their wall.

Accessible for every budget Nowadays, Mark Raven is located at the renowned shoppingstreet of Amsterdam the “Leidsestraat” near the “Leidseplein” and he has a gallery slash shop on Nieuwe-zijds Voorburgwal, a fabulous location right behind Dam square next to Magna Plaza. On the ground floor you can buy t-shirts, posters, postcards and other articles, all with the recognizable Mark Raven art. Upstairs, you can find original prints, some printed in a limited edition, others not. This is for the reason that, despite his enormous success, Mark Raven wants to be attainable for every budget. “My boxes with coasters are very popular with backpackers. I like that: in this way, my view on Amsterdam will spread all around the world.”

The Docklands

In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. Architecture and urban design Present and past have been brought together in the architecture and the urban design of the Docklands. The harbour feeling is still alive, but old warehouses have been given new functions and the diverging designs of various artists link up with each other perfectly. Admire the special houses on KNSM island, walk across the whole Java island via the pedestrian bridges and take a look at the Whale (or Sphinx) on the Sporenbrug on Borneo island. IJburg is absolutely worth a visit for architectural buffs. The urban design scheme here is based on the ‘collage city concept’. The island consists of 8 neighbourhoods, each of which has its own individual character.

Going out and music The Docklands attract many artistic people, so it comes as no surprise that when it comes to culture and going out there is plenty to do here. It’s mainly about contemporary classical music in the Music Building (Muziekgebouw) on IJ lake (a ten-minute walk from the back of the Central Station). The Bim house (Bim huis), that protrudes on the street side of the Music Building is a concert hall for jazz and improvised music. When you cross the IJ with the Ferry (Pont) from the back of the railway station, you get to another striking building: the Netherlands EYE Film Institute. The collection of the EYE comprises the complete film history.

TIPS! • Take a guided walk (also in the English language) on the Eastern Docklands • Visit the permanent showing in the basement of the EYE Film Institute Nederland for free. • Pay a visit to the beautiful Maritime Museum and get on board a replica of a VOC ship. (Kattenburgerplein 1) • Enjoy the sun on the roof terrace of the Nemo Science Centre (free of charge) or be surprised in this museum about technology and science. The Nemo Science Centre is equally interesting and fun for adults as it is for children.

Marionettentheater

Nieuwe Jonkerstraat 8 (020) 62 08 027 www.marionettentheater.nl The Amsterdam Marionette Theatre presents a unique form of music theatre: the European tradition of the classical marionette theatre. Wooden actors, in their silk and velvet costumes, present opera’s by Mozart and Offenbach. Six puppeteers manipulate the large marionettes.history straight to hearts of audiences around the world. The Amsterdam Marionette Theatre (AMT) performs in its own, small theatre in the old city centre of Amsterdam, and now and then abroad in opera houses and at festivals.

Kiss & Cry

18 DECEMBER 2014 - 4 JANUARY 2015 The World Christmas Circus is an annually returning event at Royal Theatre Carré in Amsterdam. Only winning acts from Circus Festivals in Monte Carlo, Paris, Peking and Moscow will perform in this magical show, resulting in the most magical circus of the year. Carré first opened its doors in 1887 as the greatest circus palace Europe had ever seen. Now, over 125 years later, Royal Theatre Carré is still most famous for the annual World Christmas Circus. Last year, the circus booked a record by attracting 58,000 visitors in just 18 days.

13, 14, 15 NOVEMBER Kiss & Cry is a product of the imagination of choreographer Michèle Anne De Mey and filmmaker Jaco Van Dormael(Toto le Héros, Le Huitième Jour, Mr. Nobody), this show has been in a continual state of grace for three years. It is a world that evidently has universal significance given that it is still playing to packed theatres after over two hundred dates worldwide.

Frascati, Nes 63, (020) 626 68 66, www.frascatitheater.nl 25 TILL 29 NOVEMBER De Avond (English spoken) is a performance about the spirit of an epoch. It is about escapism and lethargy, but also about the manic energy that is the opposite of these states of mind. It is a tale of friendship, a tale of four wandering souls with a firm belief in the power of language. The famous Dutch novel De avonden by Gerard Reve is one of the sources of inspiration that served Marien Jongewaard/Nieuw West and author Rob de Graaf in creating a play that deals with the choice we all have to face: Do I take an active part in this life, or do I just want to witness it?.

Stadsschouwburg, Leidseplein 26, (020) 624 23 11, www.stadsschouwburgamsterdam.nl

Its basic premise is the memory we have of people who made us and who have left us. The subject is dealt with in a revolutionary way. That is to say a film is shot and projected simultaneously in the space and time of the theatre, based on the creation in vivo of a nanoworld in which simple prehensile endings become characters dancing amid miniature landscapes. That said, nothing has been revealed.

Together with a team of international artists, he’s given this well-know fairy tale a new look. His Cinderella is an experience, full of humour and virtuosic dance to which a generous sprinkling of magic has been added.

La Bohème

6 NOVEMBER Great performance should have the power to move, to enrage, to instil empathy and maybe break hearts. Talk to the Demon by Belgian choreographer Wim Vandekeybus for Ultima Vez manages all of these and still has room for amusing and disturbing us all at once. Though a little too long, it is a work of quality and depth, highlighting human cruelty, where no one’s actions go unscrutinised. Author: Emily Brown

4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 30 DECEMBER On 4 December 2014 Dutch National Opera presents a new production of La bohème, in co-production with English National Opera. Giacomo Puccini based this opera on Henri Murgers Scènes de la vie de bohème – about the lives of young, struggling Parisian artists. La bohème was innovative in its realistic representation of the environment in which the opera takes place: the free-living world of the bohémiens and their girlfriends. The characters express themselves in everyday language. Audiences were quick to embrace the work, and it is still, more than a century later, an audience favourite.

16 TILL 25 NOVEMBER Fascinating duo playing on harp and kora, by star harpist Catrin Finch from Wales and Senegalese virtuoso Seckou Keita. ‘Their strings seem intimately entwined’ (Parool). ‘Hypnotizing, intoxicating, majestic, breathtakingly beautiful’ (de Volkskrant): superlatives fall short for the harpist duo of Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita. She is from Wales, he’s from Senegal. She is the new star of the classical harp and he is a virtuoso of the African harp, the kora. Their mixture of ancient melodies from Wales and West-Africa has proven successful: their debut album Clychau Dibon and their live performances are getting feverish response. Catrin Finch performs all over the world as a classical harpist, among others with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Percussionist and kora player Seckou Keita comes from an esteemed lineage of griots (praise singers) and has been living in England since 1998. He performs solo as well as with bands like Baka Beyond. This year the duo has won the prestigious Songlines Magazine Best CrossCultural Collaboration Award.

Zaanse Schans

With its traditional green painted houses, warehouses and windmills the Zaanse Schans gives the feeling of having stepped back into the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries. However this is not an open air museum but a colourful living and working neighbourhood. Most of the buildings were re-located from other areas in the Zaanstreek in the 1960’s and 70’s as owing to urban development they were under threat of obliteration. The Zaanse Schans offers a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape as it was before and after the industrial revolution. This panorama makes the Zaanse Schans a vital link in the European Route of Industrial Heritage. Windmills A visit to a working industrial windmill is a unique experience. Paint mill De Kat and oil mill De Zoeker are open daily from March to October. From November to February most of the windmills at the Zaanse Schans are only open at the weekends. The Jonge Schaap is open all year.

Museums The Zaanse Schans has a number of fascinating museums to tempt the visitor. The Zaans Museum and the Verkade Pavilion make the tastiest museum in the Netherlands. The collection is extremely wide-ranging and is presented in a contemporary way. It features utensils, clothing and paintings as well as factory equipment from the food industry, and as you make your way through the museum you can press on various displays and try and package as many biscuits and sweets as you can in a computer game.

In de gecroonde duyvekater A great gift shop, located in a historical building from the 17th century. Zeilenmakerspad 4 1509 BZ Zaanse Schans 06-55553443 or 06-24123970 in Gecroonde Duyvekater from 1658 on the Zaanse Schans includes a bakery museum, craft bakery and an old Dutch sweetshop. There are typical Dutch / Zaanse traditional delicacies sold. Hot fresh waffles, filled cakes fresh from the oven with real almond paste among others. And Duyvekater ( with the same name as the museum) is a Zaans traditional festival bread sweet with a hint of lemon made to a 17th century recipe, the authentic stone oven, fired by sawdust can be visited and there are various exhibits shown bakery related and owned by Stichting include Zaanse Schans. The museum and shop are open Monday till Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 pm Admission is free.

The smaller, specialized museums such as the first Albert Heijn Grocery shop, the Bakery Museum ‘In de Gecroonde Duyvekater’, Museum of the Dutch Clock, are all situated at the Zaanse Schans in listed buildings bringing the history of this oldest industrial area to life.

Traditional Dutch Craft There is no entrance fee for visiting the traditional Dutch workshops such as the Wooden Shoe Workshop, the Pewter Foundry, Cocoa Lab and the Cheese Farm at the Zaanse Schans. Opening times may vary, but generally they are open daily throughout the year.

River cruises The most enjoyable way to see the surrounding area is from the water. From April to October river cruises are available along the river Zaan not only for a splendid view of the Zaanse Schans, but also for a more detailed examination of the traditional and picturesque Dutch houses, windmills and other interesting sights along the way.

Zaanse Schans The Zaanse Schans is open daily throughout the year. There is no entrance fee, however some of the attractions charge an admission fee.

FOOD DRINKS NIGHTLIFE

Whatever your taste is, Amsterdam has it. Amsterdam has all the nightlife you would expect. There are intimate restaurants, bars with or without live music, hip dance clubs, comedy clubs, and a casino. A complete list would fill a whole book, so we can only give you some recommendations here.

restaurants | cafés As one might expect from a cosmopolitan city, Amsterdam not only offers the possibility of enjoying classical French cuisine, but since a few decades the city has also abounded in - sometimes surprisingly good - Greek, Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese, Korean and even Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants. This fact has caused the extensive, daily public market in Albert Cuypstraat to adapt its range to the purchasing requirements of these restaurants. For a quick cheap lunchtime bite try the sandwich shops, the chips stands or herring stalls. Eating maatjes (‘mates’) herring is quite possibly the only important culinary tradition of our otherwise in this respect poorly endowed country. Amsterdam is also a city with many bars and cafés, some 1,500 in all. Each of the areas mentioned below has something to offer, from friendly and relaxed brown cafés, stylish grand cafés to crowded designer bars. The cafés and bars vary greatly and have their own special attraction: a wide range of beers, jenever (Dutch gin), live music, canal-side terraces, board games, pool tables or just good old fun.

Jordaan The most easy-going area of the city hosts a great number of outstanding restaurants and bars, from classical French cuisine, Thai food to Tapas bars. Something can be found to everyone’s taste.

Rembrandtplein Observed by the cast-iron statue of Amsterdam’s most famous painter lies Rembrandtplein. This place is bustling with places to eat and drink. Some of the most beautiful grand cafés are located here, like Schiller withits marvellous art deco interior.

Utrechtsestraat area This narrow street has a special atmosphere and is known for its gift shops and international restaurants. Before dining, you can unwind with a drink on a terrace on Rembrandtplein.

Reguliersdwarsstraat As far as gay nightlife is concerned, without a doubt, the Reguliersdwarsstraat is the hippest street in town. However, some of the best restaurants are located here.

Leidseplein Leidseplein is Amsterdam’s centre of entertainment, with its many bars, nightclubs, theatres, music halls and hotels. Of course there are many different types of restaurants here.

Goodies Huidenstraat 9, (020) 625 61 22 www.goforthegoodies.nl One of the best pasta’s in Amsterdam: linguini with grilled vegetables. For more than 16 years a household name for lunch. Visitors of the 9 Streets area come in this cosy room with bright colours to get something nice to eat during lunch hour, before shopping or going out. The service is friendly and thoughtful. Here’s the place to meet the local Dutchman. Most visitors are students and canal belt Amsterdammers.
