PORGY AND BESS TIMELESS THEATRE ABOUT THE JOY AND PAIN OF LOVE

Porgy and Bess, the predecessor of today’s musicals, will visit Amsterdam from the 3rd until the 14th of March at the RAI Theatre. The production comes straight from the United States to the Netherlands, with a cast and crew of 130 people. This masterpiece, composed by George Gershwin and with lyrics written by his brother Ira Gershwin, Edwin DuBose Heyward and Dorothy Heyward, celebrates its 80th anniversary this year! Porgy and Bess may be called a folk opera, but in the United States it is known as “America’s Greatest Musical”! It is a colourful, moving and intense story that touches you deeply, written by life itself, as the New York Times once put it: “Art becomes life and life becomes art!” It is the ultimate folk opera, as it contains powerful themes like murder and death, but above all love, for it shows the joys of love, but also the pain it can cause. Porgy and Bess tells the story of the intense love between Porgy, a disabled beggar, and the beautiful but unsteady 6

Bess. Eighty years after Porgy and Bess premiered in the United States the plot still manages to move its audience, not in the least because of its great songs, like “Summertime” and “I Got Plenty of Nothing”, which have become classics in their own right. Once the curtain opens, you are introduced to the hard life of Catfish Row. When Bess’ boyfriend Crown (a temperamental drunk) murders the gambler Robbins, he flees town. When Bess refuses to join him, Porgy offers to take her in. This is how Gershwin’s love story begins, and until this day it still attracts audiences from all over the world. Porgy and Bess is to be presented in the original version, as intended by George Gershwin, Edwin DuBose, Dorothy Heyward and Ira Gershwin. Their descendants keep a strict eye on the production process to make sure that performances are only authorised if they meet all their requirements in terms of casting, orchestra, sets and costumes. These stringent conditions are the reason why Porgy and Bess is not a commonly seen production

nowadays. The costs of the production are also high, due to the large amount of people involved. Moreover, the leading roles are reserved for those names who have already gained fame and fortune in the world of opera. When considering the complexity of the songs, all the roles must be cast several times, just like in the world’s large opera houses. Porgy and Bess, which will grace the RAI Theatre’s stage from the 3rd until the 14th of March, is therefore a million dollar production which will be performed in the true spirit of and according to the wishes of the late George Gershwin. Eighty years after the Porgy and Bess première performance in 1935, this folk opera, or musical if you will, is still alive and kicking...

DID YOU KNOW THAT: Amsterdammers also call their city Mokum? Amsterdam was originally built on piles? You can more or less deduce from the gables how old a canalside house is? Amsterdam has more canals and bridges than Venice? The Amsterdam ring of canals has been on the UNESCO world heritage list since 2010?

City of Amsterdam Where to begin? That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you the Amsterdam Journal has divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. Each area has its own character. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown (referring to the dark wood interiors) pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands (Museumkwartier – Museum Quarter), large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops (Centrum (Centre), de Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)

Jordaan

Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. In the past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot! Authentic working class area Y ou can wander around through the streets and side streets in a relaxed way and enjoy the spontaneous and relaxed atmosphere. Y ou can experience the typical atmosphere of the Jordaan, in streets like Westerstraat, Tweede Anjeliersdwarsstraat, Tweede Tuindwarsstraat and around the Noordermarkt. On Saturdays you will find the best organic farmer’s market of Amsterdam on the Noordermarkt, directly opposite the Noorderkerk (Noorder church).

Pubs/Bars and shops When you walk from the Noorderkerk to the Westerkerk (Western church) – the recognizable church that has a blue-red crown on its tower - , you will automatically get to the Westermarkt. Here you will find the monument for gay people (1987), consisting of three large pink granite triangles. From here you can go straight onto R ozengracht (R ozen canal). This shopping street is very well-liked because of its diversity of nice shops.

Anne Frank house Also not far from the Westerkerk, you can take a look in the Anne Frank’s Achterhuis. Behind a closet that turns out to be a door, you will find the small house where she wrote in her diary. Very oppressive.

The real pub life ‘Gezellig. This Dutch word – that can barely be translated properly -, applies perfectly to the typical (brown) pubs in the Jordaan. The atmosphere is easy-going, the people are spontaneous and speak with a very broad Amsterdam accent. Y ou will regularly hear the sound of original Dutch music.

TIPS! • Do you want to visit the Anne Frank House (Prinsengracht 267)? Be there on time and prepare for serious waiting times. • Find Dutch conviviality in one of the over 60 (brown) cafés in the Jordaan. • Visit the fabric market (Lapjesmarkt) on the Noordermarkt: Mondays 8.00 – 14.00 hours. • Feel like going on a shopping spree? At the edge of the Jordaan you will find the Haarlemmerstraat and the Haarlemmerdijk with many contemporary and unique and edgy clothes shops.

The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) are located in the heart of Amsterdam, in a part of the old city centre. Here you can both feel and see the history of Amsterdam. The nine streets are unique for their diversity and history but at the same time have managed to incorporate the splendour of the past with a taste of the present.

All shops are represented in these nine unique and distinctive streets. Pleasant, unique and bold In former times the workshops of craftsmen could be found in Reestraat, Berenstraat, Runstraat, Hartenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Huidenstraat, Gasthuismolensteeg, Oude Spiegelstraat and Wijde Heisteeg. Nowadays the small streets are full of specialist shops. If you want to snap up something special, you are bound to be successful here. Contrary to the large shops in the city centre, nothing is standard here. Except the more easy-going atmosphere and the great amount of creativity.

than fifty clothes shops. No sameness here, but mainly colourful, chic, trendy, exciting, vintage or second-hand clothes. The second-hand shops in the Nine Streets are famous for vintage, chic and second-hand clothes in Amsterdam by the way.

Unlike anything else All the shops really show sincere interests: shoe shops with unusual collections, a sock shop for men, specialised bookshops, a cheese shop with hundreds of different types of cheeses and have you ever seen a White Teeth shop before?

TIPS! • On de straatjes.nl uk you can see the amount of specialised shops • Most shops in the Nine Streets are also open on Sundays, after 12.00 hours. • There are various small cafés in the Nine Streets that sell healthy sandwiches, smoothies, cheesecake and other goodies.

Vintage, chic, second-hand and everything in between The collections of the shops show that the owners are passionate enthusiasts. Many of them have made their hobby their job. If you love clothes with just something special, you can indulge yourself in the more

DE 9 STRAATJES CENTRUM

A unique characteristic of the nine streets is that you will not find any chain stores here; in fact almost all of the stores in the nine streets are speciality stores of some kind. From cheese to chocolates, fancy dress to second-hand clothing, antiques to art deco, tearooms and lunchrooms to bars; kitsch, retro and loungy are all represented in these nine unique and distinctive streets. “The whole world is built around Amsterdam” wrote the world famous in Holland poet Joost van den V ondel in the seventeenth century. This century - being the Dutch Golden Age - was for Amsterdam a previously unexperienced period of prosperity. People came to the city for business or a decent living. The old town area became too small, so an extension was inevitable and three new main canals were dug out: Heren-, Keizers- and Prinsengracht. Between them crosscanals and -streets.

The quarter of ‘9 Streets’ was constructed in the first half of the 17 th century and was from the beginning until now dominated by trade and culture. The names of the streets remind us of the old artisans dealing with all kinds of skins for the leather-industry. The area permits a general view of the architecture of all kinds of houses. Among these houses are the beautiful V ingboon-Houses and the building ‘Felix Meritis’. The Felix Meritis-building dates from 17 87 . It was ordered by the Felix MeritisSociety. This society was guided by the enlightenment and the ideals of those days. In this building the first Amsterdam (oval) concert-hall was constructed. By means of concerts, lessons and tests the public was actively involved. With a short intermission it has always cleared the way for cultural purposes. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was heard in the no longer exisiting municipal theater on the Keizersgracht.

On the Herengracht you’ll find the Biblical Museum. The collection is quite diverse with in its heart the Book itself (the oldest dating from 1477) , an important number of temple models, archeological finds from Egypt and so on. In the Gasthuismolensteeg nr. 7 y ou will find the Dutch Spectacles Museum. It reveals the history of spectacles over 700 y ears. In the neighbourhood of our quarter of the ‘9 S treets’ is the Royal Palace, the former Town Hall, built in 1648, the Westerkerk where Rembrandt was buried and the Anne Frank House in which the Frank family was hiding from l942 unt il l944. Here Anne wrote her famous diary. V isit us and find for yourself that our ‘9 S treets’ are an ideal framework to explore Amsterdam in all it’s facets and richness. Moreover you’ll have the experience that our quarter itself is an exclusive shopping area with an unmatched range of shops, studios, restaurants and hotels.

Museumkwartier

There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes. Where to begin? Rijksmuseum (National Museum) In this impressive monumental building dating from 1885 you will find the famous masterpieces of Dutch and Flemish painters from the fifteenth up to and including the nineteenth century. Here you will also find R embrandt’s world-famous Night Watch (1650). Other masters to be found here are: Jan Steen, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer. After a long renovation project the R ijksmuseum has been open again completely since April.

Van Gogh Museum When you walk through this museum you clearly see how this painter developed. As sombre as the paintings are that he made in the Netherlands, so colourful and vivid are the works that he made on French soil. Y ou will also find works of contemporaries like Monet and Gauguin in the museum.

Stedelijk Museum (Municipal Museum) The Stedelijk Museum, established in 1874 , has a large collection of classical, modern and contemporary art. The museum owns about 90.000 objects from practically all important 2 0th and 2 1st century schools.

Concertgebouw (Concert building) In 1888 the first concert took place in this famous Concert building. The acoustics in the building are extraordinary. In 2 013 the Concertgebouw is celebrating its 12 5th anniversary. Every month of the Jubilee year a different period from the history of the Concertgebouw are central.

Browsing around in antique shops Together with the adjacent Nieuwe Spiegelstraat, Spiegelgracht (opposite the R ijksmuseum) makes up the heart of the Spiegelkwartier; an area with many antique shops and galleries.

TIPS! • If you don’t like waiting, you just order your Museum tickets online. • During the concert season (mid-September to the end of June) a free lunch concert is given in the Concertgebouw on Wednesdays: between 12.00 and 12.30 hours. • High Society shopping: parallel to Museumplein you will find the most stylish and most expensive shopping street of the Netherlands: P.C. Hooftstraat. • Diamond lovers visit the Diamond Museum Amsterdam (Paulus Potterstraat, opposite Museumplein)

Old Town

Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. Although not appreciated by everyone, a tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. The Zeedijk and China Town Close to Central station you will find one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam: the Zeedijk. The place is swarming with restaurants, café s and Indonesian shops (tokos). The Zeedijk is the centre of China Town; the Peking ducks hang behind the windows and a large Buddhist temple colours the street scene. From midday you will increasingly smell aromas that make your mouth water. Pull up a chair in one of the smaller Chinese restaurants. This is where Chinese Amsterdammers (or Amsterdam Chinese) eat too. Is there a line somewhere? Then the wait is very probably highly worthwhile!

Red light district The R ed Light district covers the area between Zeedijk and Warmoesstraat. As soon as dusk falls and the shining red light greets you, the atmosphere is loose and laid back here. The ladies behind the windows wink playfully are friendly and wave to the merry passers-by. Do you want to get your breath back for a moment from all the impressions? There are plenty of pubs to recover while enjoying a beer.

Oude Kerksplein (Old Church Square) The Oude Kerksplein is special place in the heart of the R ed Light district. The 14 th century church is the oldest building still standing in Amsterdam. There’s a bronze statue on the square in honour of the prostitutes who have been active in this area for centuries. This lady is called ‘Belle’.

Zeedijk

A proper neighbourhood with its own personality Zeedijk used to be right at the heart of Amsterdam’s port area. Sailors would come here to find a bed for the night, food, drink, company and other amusement. Today’s travellers and tourists also enjoy spending a day on Zeedijk. And who can blame them? With its unusual shops, great eateries, nightlife and, of course, Chinatown, there’s always something to experience! Zeedijk is absolutely part of Amsterdam’s historic centre. One place where you can get a sense of that lively history is Zeedijk 1, in café In ’t Aepjen. This wooden building dates back to 1544 and supposedly inspired a well-known Dutch saying, ‘In de aap gelogeerd zijn’, which means to be staying at the aap or, less literally, to be up the creek without a paddle. Another ‘brown café’ with its own story is Het Mandje, Amsterdam’s very first gay bar.

Chinatown In the 1950s, Amsterdam’s Chinese population began to settle on and around Zeedijk in numbers. The first Chinese were brought to Amsterdam in 1911 as cheap labour. Forced by the economic crisis of the 1930s and the arrival of motorised ships, they went looking for other sources of income. Amsterdam’s Chinatown owes its Chinese specialist stores, Chinese health shops and authentic Chinese kitchens to these developments. Plus, of course, there is its splendid Chinese Buddhist temple.

A neighbourhood with personality The 1970s and ’80s were turbulent times for Zeedijk. The port activities had shifted to the west of Amsterdam and the neighbourhood was now swamped with heroin dealers. It was even officially declared an emergency area. These days, there is no sign of that anymore. On the contrary! Thanks to the fact that local people tackled its problems together, Zeedijk has developed into a particularly pleasant street with a real sense of solidarity among business owners, residents and visitors, many of whom are regulars.

Eating and drinking Each one of the cafés, lunchrooms, tearooms and restaurants has something special about it, in terms of both the interiors and the menus: if you like personal, smallscale, home-made and fresh from the oven food, you’ll find it hard to make a choice. Fortunately, Zeedijk is open for business from breakfast to dinner and from high tea to dessert. Night owls, too, are well cate-

red for: the nightclubs and cafés keep their doors open until the early hours.

Something to see everywhere The shops all have their own look and stories too. This makes a Zeedijk a miniature heaven for lovers of craftsmanship, collectors of special products and everyone who enjoys feasting their eyes. It is a case of taking your time and keeping your eyes open as you stroll around, otherwise you will miss a lot. Those who do this will be rewarded by the many specialist shops offering everything from designer toys, special underwear and cool trainers to fetish clothing, comic books from all over the world and designer fashion. You have been warned: the risk of ‘system overload’ is ever present!

Artist Mark Raven

and his Contemporary City Impressions

Text: Sarah Saarberg

It is obvious that the artist Mark Raven loves his birthplace by each and every work he has made of Amsterdam. This city never ceases to captivate and inspire him. Mark’s work is modern and wayward, but is unmistakably connected to this versatile and interesting capitol of ours. If Marks Raven’s father had had his way, Mark would have become a journalist. At the time, he followed his advice and went to the school for journalism. But he clearly was destined for other things. The artist explains his chosen medium: “The image, as means of communication, is far more appealing to me than text. Moreover, an image is universal. Everyone understands it.” And so, Mark installed himself as a street artist on a rug in the tunnel underneath the Rijksmuseum to capture the city in every way. “I love the city. But I love people too. I immediately want to show them what I make.”

Kiosk on Museumplein Mark’s work was liked right from the beginning. So much even, that the city council helped him to a studio right on the Museumplein in the form of a rebuild flower stall. Mark wanted his art to be accessible for everyone, and so he began to print t-shirts and posters with his work. “I would like it if everyone could enjoy my view of Amsterdam,” he simply says.

in the tradition of Rembrandt’s etchings and M.C. Escher’s graphic work, but gradually generated his modern touch. Mark combines traditional etching techniques with painting and modern graphic and digital techniques. All in a style that appeals to a lot of people. And not just tourists. Many Amsterdammers have a Mark Raven hanging on their wall.

Accessible for every budget Nowadays, Mark Raven is located at the renowned shoppingstreet of Amsterdam the “Leidsestraat” near the “Leidseplein” and he has a gallery slash shop on Nieuwe-zijds Voorburgwal, a fabulous location right behind Dam square next to Magna Plaza. On the ground floor you can buy t-shirts, posters, postcards and other articles, all with the recognizable Mark Raven art. Upstairs, you can find original prints, some printed in a limited edition, others not. This is for the reason that, despite his enormous success, Mark Raven wants to be attainable for every budget. “My boxes with coasters are very popular with backpackers. I like that: in this way, my view on Amsterdam will spread all around the world.”

The Docklands

In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. Architecture and urban design Present and past have been brought together in the architecture and the urban design of the Docklands. The harbour feeling is still alive, but old warehouses have been given new functions and the diverging designs of various artists link up with each other perfectly. Admire the special houses on KNSM island, walk across the whole Java island via the pedestrian bridges and take a look at the Whale (or Sphinx) on the Sporenbrug on Borneo island. IJburg is absolutely worth a visit for architectural buffs. The urban design scheme here is based on the ‘collage city concept’. The island consists of 8 neighbourhoods, each of which has its own individual character.

Going out and music The Docklands attract many artistic people, so it comes as no surprise that when it comes to culture and going out there is plenty to do here. It’s mainly about contemporary classical music in the Music Building (Muziekgebouw) on IJ lake (a ten-minute walk from the back of the Central Station). The Bim house (Bim huis), that protrudes on the street side of the Music Building is a concert hall for jazz and improvised music. When you cross the IJ with the Ferry (Pont) from the back of the railway station, you get to another striking building: the Netherlands EYE Film Institute. The collection of the EYE comprises the complete film history.

TIPS! • Take a guided walk (also in the nglish language) on the Eastern Docklands • Visit the permanent showing in the basement of the Y Film Institute Nederland for free. • Pay a visit to the beautiful Maritime Museum and get on board a replica of a VOC ship. ( attenburgerplein 1) • njoy the sun on the roof terrace of the Nemo Science Centre (free of charge) or be surprised in this museum about technology and science. The Nemo Science Centre is equally interesting and fun for adults as it is for children.

VAN GOGH & CO CRISS-CROSSING THE COLLECTION

VAN GOGH YEAR: 125 YEARS OF INSPIRATION On 29 July 2015 it will be exactly 125 years since Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) died. Throughout the year, the artist will be honoured with outstanding exhibitions and cultural events in various European towns. In the Van Gogh Year 2015, with the theme ‘125 years of inspiration’, the Kröller-Müller Museum presents the exhibition Van Gogh & Co. Criss-crossing the collection. Still lifes, nature themes, cityscapes and the human figure by Vincent van Gogh are compared to works by his contemporaries in the same genres. More than fifty paintings and drawings by Van Gogh will be shown, along with an equal number of works by other artists, such as François Bonvin, Jan Toorop, Henri Fantin-Latour, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Paul Cézanne, Adolphe Monticelli and Bart van der Leck. Tribute to Van Gogh Besides the exhibition Van Gogh & Co. Criss-crossing the collection, a smaller presentation with tributes to Van Gogh is also on display. Among other things, this includes a sculpture of a tormented Van Gogh by Joseph Mendes da Costa and an impassioned homage to the artist made by Vilmos Huszár. A number of posters are also included. These were made in 1990 to commemorate Van Gogh’s death, at that time a hundred years previously. A variety of artists, such as Roy Lichtenstein, Giuseppe Penone and Mario Merz had made works that emphasized their admiration of Van Gogh and these are compiled in the series of posters. A summer with Van Gogh (June – September) A summer with Van Gogh is an extensive side programme organized by the museum to accompany the exhibition. Events include Van Gogh Concerts in association with NJO (Dutch Youth Orchestra Ensemble), Painting with the masters (Van Gogh digital painting game), special lectures Vincent and Helene (the founder of the KröllerMüller Museum), drawing, painting and photography workshops and the cycle route Van Gogh and nature in association with the Hoge Veluwe National Park.

WELCOME TO VAN GOGH VILLAGE NUENEN YOU CAN’T GET CLOSER TO VAN GOGH I n N uenen you can walk where V incent once walked, and still see what V incent once saw. Y ou can experience in real life the lovely and uniq ue locations he painted. V incent van G ogh lived for two years in N uenen. Although there are no original paintings, our inner thoughts say it all: you can’ t get closer to V an G ogh. Vincentre Museum In the V incentre museum we get to know van Gogh as a person and we see how he developed to become a world-famous artist. Modern technology make this a real experience. Fragments from The Starry Night have been incorporated into the asp- halt. This results in a subtle play on light and poetry. A meeting of two artists in surroundings where V an Gogh once lived and where Roosegaarde has now created a unique technopoetry experience for visitors.

The Vincent Affair – an unique exhibition in 2015 Immerse yourself in V an Gogh’s mind. How does that feel? This is the challenge for 7 designers in the imposing villa Nune V ille, across the Museum V incentre. It was here that V incent and Margot Begemann had a love affair that ended in a dramatic way. V incent had his own way of thinking about things. That applies to the current designers. They will enter into a relationship, an affair with V incent. What brings them together in ‘alternative thinking’ will result in the designs for the rooms in this house: The V incent Affair.

ART & CULTURE

What’s the best time to visit Amsterdam? That depends of course on what you’re looking for. Springtime is bright and colourful in Amsterdam. In summer it buzzes with all sorts of outdoors activities and festivals. In autumn and winter, as the leaves are blown from the trees, Amsterdam’s beautiful gables reappear in their full glory from behind thefoliage.

19 DECEMBER 2014 11 MARCH 2015 Alluring Hell gives a distinct reflection on the oeuvre of the Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki (Tokyo, 19 40). The extensive exhibition comprises both his notorious early work, as well as his very recent series that have never been shown in the Netherlands before. The unique presentation follows an international heavyweight in the dusk of his life. Araki is one of the most celebrated Japanese artists of our time. He is noted for his seemingly detached bondagephotographs. Simultaneously his work is very intimate and personal, often closely related to his hometown Tokyo and to the memories of his late wife Yoko.

27 NOVEMBER 2014 29 MARCH 2015 Amsterdam’s Oude Kerk is the dream location for Tony Oursler’s first solo exhibition in the Netherlands in 20 years. The oeuvre of the born and raised New Yorker Tony Oursler (19 57 ), who together with Bill V iola and Gary Hill belongs to the second generation of video artists, covers a broad range of techniques and media. It explores the complex relationships between high and low culture and between the individual and mass media and he does this using humour, irony and fantasy.

15 SEPTEMBER 2014 MARCH 1ST 2015 Why do we fall in love with some handbags over and over again, while most fashion items wind up in a corner of the closet after just one or two seasons? With Forever V intage, The Museum of Bags and Purses takes a close look at the magic of classic vintage and retro handbags that have kept their charm and attraction over the years and keep reappearing in one form or another. In 2014, vintage is hotter than ever. Since the 199 0s , stars like Julia Roberts, René e Zellweger and Kate Moss have significantly added to its popularity and recently, the past and its fash revives in movies and tv-series such as Mad Men.

24 SEPTEMBER 2014 TILL 15 MARCH 2015. The exhibition provides an insight into the cultural cross fertilization that took place within the vast Roman Empire and gives an insight into the daily lives of the Romans by using digital techniques to present archaeological objects. 13 SEPTEMBER 2014 TILL 12 APRIL 2015 70 years since the Hunger Winter, it’s time for the Dutch Resistance Museum Amsterdam to show a moving exhibition on some 40.000 children who were evacuated in the first few months of 1945 from the urban western part of the country ‘to the farms’, to save them from starvation. To the farms! Winter 1944/45, the Netherlands has been at war for more than four years. The Germans are going to lose, but nobody knows when. There are terrible food shortages in the urban western part of the country. Thousands of malnourished children are threatened with starvation. Rescue operations are launched, with the permission of the occupying Germans.

12 FEBRUARY - 17 MAY 2015 Rembrandt’s Late Pupils Studying under a Genius. Drawings and paintings by artists like Nicolaes Maes, Willem Drost, Abraham van Dijck, Jacobus Leveck, Heyman Dullaert and Arent de Gelder, brought together from major international museums and private collections, shed new light on Rembrandt’s special position as a highly sought-after teacher of students who wanted to continue their training after apprenticeships elsewhere. It focuses on Rembrandt’s influence, his teaching methods and the relationship between master and pupil, providing greater insight into this aspect of the Netherlands’ most famous artist. The exhibition will coincide with Late Rembrandt, the major exhibition in the Rijksmuseum.

1, 3, 4, 7, 8 MARCH 2015 Dutch National Ballet is opening the new ballet season in spectacular fashion with a festive Gala: a unique evening of highlights from the company’s rich ballet repertoire. Last year was the first time that Dutch National Ballet organised a gala for the official opening of the ballet season, and it was received with great enthusiasm. This year, the company continues the tradition with an equally festive programme of famous pas de deux, new creations, work by the Netherlands’ greatest choreographer Hans van Manen and highlights from Swan Lake.

The Amsterdam Marionette Theatre presents a unique form of music theatre: the European tradition of the classical marionette theatre. Wooden actors, in their silk and velvet costumes, present opera’s by Mozart and Offenbach. Six puppeteers manipulate the large marionettes.history straight to hearts of audiences around the world. EXTENDED TILL 30 APRIL 2015 Anne is a theater performance based on the life of Anne Frank. It covers the two years spent by Anne and her family in the Secret Annex as well as the events of the times before and after. Anne’s words - poignantly reflecting the tensions and tragedy of their existence during these times - come alive against the backdrop of a lifesize set, allowing spectators to experience Anne’s life journey that leads the lonely little girl towards writing and womanhood in the midst of terrible oppression. ANNE is the first ever theater performance based on all the versions of her diaries, including the uncensored ones, edited by Anne Frank herself and is playing at the purpose-built Theater Amsterdam.

5 TILL 15 MARCH, 7 TILL 18 APRIL 2015 In King Lear, Shakespeare tells the story of an ageing king who must share his kingdom among his three daughters, thus precipitating his own ruin and that of his country. In Tom Lanoye’s Queen Lear, the kingdom becomes an international family company managed by the eponymous ‘Leading Lady Lear’. Lanoye paints a portrait of an elderly businesswoman who has lost all sense of reality. She is unable to use her power to solve the very real problems all around her. She is concerned only with popularity and reputation. The piece is unsurpassed in its ability to present the pettiness and powerlessness of a ‘ruler’ unable to cope with unforeseen events.

More recently, Sonic Acts has developed into a platform for research, development and production at the intersection of art, science and theory. It also commissions and co-produces new works, often in collaboration with international festivals, arts organisations, funders and other partners. Sonic Acts is generously supported by Creative Industries Fund NL, City of Amsterdam and Paradiso.

30 APRIL 2015 This 63-year-old blues veteran has completed his twenty-fifth album in 2014: A Day In Nashville. And the name says it all; the record was recorded in one day in the famous Sound Kitchen Studios in Nashville. Robben collaborated with musicians who have worked with David Sandborn, Sting and Tony Bennett. He describes the new material as a diverse mix of blues that flirts with soul, R&B and pop. Tonight he plays old material, but the American also plays new songs.

2 MARCH 2015 In early 2014, WITHIN TEMPTATION unleashed ‘Hydra’. This monster record claimed more than 10 European Top-10 chart positions, a #2 position in the iTunes World Charts, and the band’s highest US Billboard Top-20 chart position to date. The album success was followed by a 33-date European arena tour, selling out noted venues like Wembley Arena in London, Le Zenith in Paris, and the legendary Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam (twice). Over 15,000 fans joined the ‘Elements’ show celebrations and more than 120,000 fans witnessed the ‘Hydra’ beast on stage in Europe, but WITHIN TEMPTATION is far from done.

21 MARCH 2015 In the spring of 2014. The Tibbs went into the studio with producer Paul Willemsen (Beans & Fatback, Lefties Soul Connection and Kris Berry) who guided the process. Not much later, the band’s debut album ‘Cleaned Out’ was released. The Tibbs create immersive garage soul with a touch of blues, funk and jazz. The voice of frontwoman Elsa Bekman is the “icing on the cake” and gives the band a rock edge.

15 MARCH 2015 With Bach, Bach, Bach the Nederlands Kamerkoor (Netherlands Chamber Choir) presents a programme a Bach-lover can delight in. The motets of Johann Sebastian are generally well-known. And although Bach’s son Carl Philippe Emanuel produced an extensive oeuvre, the motets he composed are considerably less known. But that he also proved to be a brilliant pupil of his father in this genre is evident from these little gems.

‘There’s nothing wrong with beauty’, says Fred Hersch, one of the most prominent jazz pianists today. Thanks to famous former students such as Brad Mehldau and Ethan Iverson (The Bad Plus) he has inspired a whole generation of pianists. Ever since the 1970s, when he started in New York in the bands of Lee Konitz and Art Farmer, he has strived for absolute beauty.

SPE CIAL

Zaanse Schans

With its traditional green painted houses, warehouses and windmills the Zaanse Schans gives the feeling of having stepped back into the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries. However this is not an open air museum but a colourful living and working neighbourhood. Most of the buildings were re-located from other areas in the Zaanstreek in the 1960’s and 70’s as owing to urban development they were under threat of obliteration. The Zaanse Schans offers a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape as it was before and after the industrial revolution. This panorama makes the Zaanse Schans a vital link in the European Route of Industrial Heritage. Windmills A visit to a working industrial windmill is a unique experience. Paint mill De Kat and oil mill De Zoeker are open daily from March to October. From November to February most of the windmills at the Zaanse Schans are only open at the weekends. The Jonge Schaap is open all year.

Museums The Zaanse Schans has a number of fascinating museums to tempt the visitor. The Zaans Museum and the Verkade Pavilion make the tastiest museum in the Netherlands. The collection is extremely wide-ranging and is presented in a contemporary way. It features utensils, clothing and paintings as well as factory equipment from the food industry, and as you make your way through the museum you can press on various displays and try and package as many biscuits and sweets as you can in a computer game. The smaller, specialized museums such as the first Albert Heijn Grocery shop, the Bakery Museum ‘In de Gecroonde Duyvekater’, Museum of the Dutch Clock, are all situated at the Zaanse Schans in listed buildings bringing the history of this oldest industrial area to life.

Traditional Dutch Craft There is no entrance fee for visiting the traditional Dutch workshops such as the Wooden Shoe Workshop, the Pewter Foundry, Cocoa Lab and the Cheese Farm at the Zaanse Schans. Opening times may vary, but generally they are open daily throughout the year.

River cruises The most enjoyable way to see the surrounding area is from the water. From April to October river cruises are available along the river Zaan not only for a splendid view of the Zaanse Schans, but also for a more detailed examination of the traditional and picturesque Dutch houses, windmills and other interesting sights along the way.

Zaanse Schans The Zaanse Schans is open daily throughout the year. There is no entrance fee, however some of the attractions charge an admission fee.

Museum shop Albert Heijn grocery store The modest birth of the Ahold Company Kalverringdijk 5 | 1509 BT Zaandam +31 (0)75 6169619 In this beautiful listed building is the faithfully detailed reconstruction of the inventory and interior of the first Albert Heijn store in Oostzaan. This is how Albert Heijn, the founder of the Albert Heijn company began when he took over the small grocery store from his parents in 1887. The museum’s reconstructed interior bears witness to the considerable changes and developments during the last century. The museum also includes a small presentation about the development of the coffee business as part of the heritage of Albert Heijn.

FOOD DRINKS NIGHTLIFE

Whatever your taste is, Amsterdam has it. Amsterdam has all the nightlife you would expect. There are intimate restaurants, bars with or without live music, hip dance clubs, comedy clubs, and a casino. A complete list would fill a whole book, so we can only give you some recommendations here.

bars | live music

restaurants cafés As one might expect from a cosmopolitan city, Amsterdam not only offers the possibility of enjoying classical French cuisine, but since a few decades the city has also abounded in - sometimes surprisingly good - Greek, Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese, Korean and even Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants. This fact has caused the extensive, daily public market in Albert Cuypstraat to adapt its range to the purchasing requirements of these restaurants. For a quick cheap lunchtime bite try the sandwich shops, the chips stands or herring stalls. Eating maatjes (‘mates’) herring is quite possibly the only important culinary tradition of our otherwise in this respect poorly endowed country.

Jordaan The most easy-going area of the city hosts a great number of outstanding restaurants and bars, from classical French cuisine, Thai food to Tapas bars. Something can be found to everyone’s taste.

Rembrandtplein Observed by the cast-iron statue of Amsterdam’s most famous painter lies Rembrandtplein. This place is bustling with places to eat and drink. Some of the most beautiful grand cafés are located here, like Schiller withits marvellous art deco interior.

Utrechtsestraat area This narrow street has a special atmosphere and is known for its gift shops and international restaurants. Before dining, you can unwind with a drink on a terrace on Rembrandtplein.

Amsterdam is also a city with many bars and cafés, some 1,500 in all. Each of the areas mentioned below has something to offer, from friendly and relaxed brown cafés, stylish grand cafés to crowded designer bars.

Reguliersdwarsstraat

The cafés and bars vary greatly and have their own special attraction: a wide range of beers, jenever (Dutch gin), live music, canal-side terraces, board games, pool tables or just good old fun.

Leidseplein is Amsterdam’s centre of entertainment, with its many bars, nightclubs, theatres, music halls and hotels. Of course there are many different types of restaurants here.

As far as gay nightlife is concerned, without a doubt, the Reguliersdwarsstraat is the hippest street in town. However, some of the best restaurants are located here.

Leidseplein

Amsterdam has some great small bars where you enter for free and or a small fee to listen to live music. Singer-songwriters, jazz, pop, folk or even classical music. You just have to know where to go.

cocktails | dinner The Venice of the North, Amsterdam’s attractions are considerable. Besides the famed redlight areas where window-shopping takes on a whole new meaning and the coffee bars that are more popular for their other wares, Amsterdam is also home to hundreds of great bars and clubs: style bars, cocktail bars, bistros, restaurants and casinos, and the famous brown cafes where you can linger long over a beer and watch the people of Amsterdam go about their business. Once you’ve visited the museum quarter and taken a tour of the canals, you can hit the town. A night out in the many bars of Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein should see you into the small hours.

dinner | clubs Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to groove. In Amsterdam you can party all night long, nearly every night of the week! Have a look at the listings below - whether you’re into techno, drum & bass, top 40, hip-hop or anything in between, you’ll find a club to match your mood.

Red light An impression about Amsterdams eldest Red Light District The Red Light District in Amsterdam is visited by more than 4 million visitors each year who are curious to know what goes on behind the closed curtains. The Red Light District is very close to the Dam Square. Here Amsterdam started of as a settlement around a dam in the river Amstel at the end of the 12th century. Let’s be honest Prostitution has enjoyed a long tradition of tolerance in Amsterdam. Safety is key here. In addition to preventing forced prostitution, the aim is an open and honest approach. Sexworkers here have their own union, plenty of police protection, an information centre (for visitors as well), frequent monitoring and testing and professional standards.

Changing the heart of Amsterdam New opportunities are setting in place a future for the city centre. The Amsterdam municipal council’s1012 project aims to discourage crime and corruption in the city centre by reducing the types of businesses that are conducive to crime and by permitting prostitution in just two areas. Together with local residents, business proprietors and investors, the municipal council is working to strengthen the area’s unique character and stimulate an economic upgrade.

Visiting the Red Light District The area is bustling with visitors and groups of tourists. It is best to travel in a pair or in a group, as the area also attracts some seedier characters. Grab a map and venture out or if you’re keen to learn more take one of the many specialised tours.

The Amsterdam city centre has a romantic image. But behind the exciting, unconventional, ‘anything goes’ image of the city centre lurks a different reality -- a reality that sometimes consist of sex trafficking, forced prostitution. This is something that the city and the justice department are fighting against.

59

58-63 RedLight District.indd 59

23-02-15 08:59

Not everything goes There are certain rules in place to ensure the safety of prostitutes and visitors to the Red Light District. It is forbidden to take photos of the women, and this is strictly enforced. Although there is 24-hour video surveillance in most parts of the district, be aware of pickpockets. They tend to target crowds of distracted tourists, so keep an eye on your belongings and leave your valuables in a safe at the hotel. Many families and people who need to get up for work the next morning live in this area. Respect their neighbourhood, and do not yell or cause disturbances.

There is more to the Wallen The Wallen, also known as the rosse buurt to Amsterdammers and the Red Light District to visitors is actually the oldest part of Amsterdam. The neighbourhood is chock-full of interesting shops, pubs, fantastic restaurants, leaning gabled houses and the city’s most charming canals. Don’t miss the vibrant Nieuwmarkt square, the gothic Oude Kerk or a walk along the centre of Amsterdam’s Chinatown, the Zeedijk (also home to an impressive Buddhist temple).

As the years went by the curtains opened more and more.

Architecture and Fashion Another site not to miss in this area is in the Oudezijds Armsteeg. There are six beautiful restored Delft Blue houses in a row. Another nice idea is to go bargain hunting for fashion in de Red Light District. Several former prostitute’s windows in De Wallen have been transformed into exhibition spaces and studios for talented clothing, shoe and streetwear designers. ■
