Fredy Knie: day’ horses is a lost ‘A day without
6 amsterdamjournal.nl
Nowhere is circus better than in Carré. The Greatest Programme ever, with world records from the world’s top artistes. The 32nd World Christmas Circus, which the Royal Theater Carré is hosting from 22 December to 8 January 2017, is raising the bar this year in terms of the number of artistes. For the first time in 32 years, 120 people will be involved in this mega production, justifying the slogan “The greatest programme ever”.
Circus Carré The greatest programme ever!
Fredy Knie Jr. presents his magical horse carousel with 25 horses, which was awarded the Golden Clown at the Monte Carlo Circus Festival
This year, the World Christmas Circus, one of the best according to circus lovers, presents another world record show with acts performing their record stunts in the ring. The programme is also proudly celebrating the return, the seventieth birthday and the 65th anniversary of circus icon FREDY KNIE JR., director-owner of the Swiss National Circus Knie. Fredy’s motto in life is: ‘A day without horses is a lost day’, and now he is making his comeback with one of the “crown jewels” of international circus history: his magical horse carousel with 25 horses in the ring at the same time. In Monte Carlo, this act was rightly awarded the Golden Clown, the Oscar of the circus world. But more gold is glittering in and above the ring! With 26 artistes, the Great Chinese State Circus from Beijing presents its two best Golden Clown winners: the beautiful Diabolo girls in a ballet style presentation
and a brand new hoop number featuring a world record jump of three metres high. The National Circus of Pyongyang (North Korea) also has a world record act: a Russian swing with flying artistes whose twenty metre jump is the longest in circus history. This act was also awarded Gold in Monte Carlo, but the current jump breaks the former record of 18 metres by another 2 metres!! Nearly all the acts have received awards at the international circus festivals in Moscow, Monte Carlo, Paris, Wuqiao and Sochi. In Sochi in 2015, for example, the Russian swing act by Alexander Skokov was voted the very best act in the world during the Master Awards, a sort of Oscars for the top acts. The Skokov group is the only Russian Swing act which is only performed by young women. The same applies to the Pas de Deux on horseback performed by the young and very talented circus couple of today,
Joszef Richter and Merrylu Casselli, who met in the ring and got married earlier this year. Their Pas de Deux on two horses is an ode to classic circus. Another award went to the sensual tango in the air by the beautiful Ambra and her husband Yves. Their act is a true dance of love above the ring. Other prize winners are the clown Rob Torres who, after a season with Circus Knie, is now making his debut in Carré, giving his own style and interpretation to classic reprises. So this 32nd World Christmas Circus not only offers a record number of artistes, but also a programme in which classic circus joins the new style circus in that magical and now Golden Carré circle, called the ring! Book your tickets online now at www.carre.nl or call 0900-2525255 (45cpm). mon-fri 9.00-21.00 Sat and sun 10.00 - 20.00) amsterdamjournal.nl 7
DID YOU KNOW THAT: Amsterdammers also call their city Mokum? Amsterdam was originally built on piles? You can more or less deduce from the gables how old a canalside house is? Amsterdam has more canals and bridges than Venice? The Amsterdam ring of canals has been on the UNESCO world heritage list since 2010?

City of Amsterdam Where to begin? That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you the Amsterdam Journal has divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. Each area has its own character. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown (referring to the dark wood interiors) pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands (Museumkwartier – Museum Quarter), large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops (Centrum (Centre), de Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)

JORDAAN
Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. In the past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot! Authentic working class area You can wander around through the streets and side streets in a relaxed way and enjoy the spontaneous and relaxed atmosphere. You can experience the typical atmosphere of the Jordaan, in streets like Westerstraat, Tweede Anjeliersdwarsstraat, Tweede Tuindwarsstraat and around the Noordermarkt. On Saturdays you will find the best organic farmer’s market of Amsterdam on the Noordermarkt, directly opposite the Noorderkerk (Noorder church).
Pubs/Bars and shops When you walk from the Noorderkerk to the Westerkerk (Western church) – the recogni zable church that has a blue-red crown on its tower - , you will automatically get to the Westermarkt. Here you will find the monument for gay people (1987), consisting of three large pink granite triangles. From here you can go straight onto Rozengracht (Rozen canal). This shopping street is very well-liked because of its diversity of nice shops.
Anne Frank house Also not far from the Westerkerk, you can take a look in the Anne Frank’s Achterhuis. Behind a closet that turns out to be a door, you will find the small house where she wrote in her diary. Very oppressive.
The real pub life ‘Gezellig. This Dutch word – that can barely be translated properly -, applies perfectly to the typical (brown) pubs in the Jordaan. The atmosphere is easy-going, the people are spontaneous and speak with a very broad Amsterdam accent. You will regularly hear the sound of original Dutch music. ■
TIPS! • Do you want to visit the Anne Frank House (Prinsengracht 267)? Be there on time and prepare for serious waiting times. • Find Dutch conviviality in one of the over 60 (brown) cafés in the Jordaan. • Visit the fabric market (Lapjesmarkt) on the Noordermarkt: Mondays 8.00 – 14.00 hours. • 10 amsterdamjournal.nl
Feel like going on a shopping spree? At the edge of the Jordaan you will find the Haarlemmerstraat and the Haarlemmerdijk with many contemporary and unique and edgy clothes shops.
ARTIST KEREN DE VREEDE MODERN ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM
Art in the Jordaan There are many little galleries in Amsterdam, but in 2012 a new gallery opened its doors. This gallery has brought color and joy to the mix of art being offered around the Jordaan area. Already named best new coming gallery by the UK Guardian, Keren de Vreede Art Gallery with it’s magnificent works of art is definitely worth a visit. Hands on Keren de Vreede paints with merely her hands and lives her art. Bright colors, thick paint and bold and daring lines are the characteristics of her paintings. They reflect her passion for life, her positive outlook and her bright personality. A self-taught artist who discovered the desire to paint in her early years. Having used all kind of materials in the past, she prefers acrylic paint to express her creativity and achieve the result she is looking for. Instead of using the traditional easel, she positions her canvas on the floor. Her style can be described as modern abstract expressionism. Her paintings have been bought by art lovers and collectors from all over the world.
BLOOM 60 x 140 cm x 5 - ACRYL ON CANVAS
Gallery When visiting Amsterdam, weave your way down to the Prinsengracht, and make sure you visit Keren de Vreede’s Art Gallery, where the local artist is happy to chat about her textural floral canvases. Her paintings are not only very beautiful, they are also truly exceptional. Every painting is unique and impossible to replicate, even by Keren herself.

The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) are located in the heart of Amsterdam, in a part of the old city centre. Here you can both feel and see the history of Amsterdam. The nine streets are unique for their diversity and history but at the same time have managed to incorporate the splendour of the past with a taste of the present.

9 STRAATJES Nine small streets
full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. Not far behind Dam Square, between the well-known ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. Pleasant, unique and bold In former times the workshops of craftsmen could be found in Reestraat, Berenstraat, Runstraat, Hartenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Huidenstraat, Gasthuismolensteeg, Oude Spiegelstraat and Wijde Heisteeg. Nowadays the small streets are full of specialist shops. If you want to snap up something special, you are bound to be successful here. Contrary to the large shops in the city centre, nothing is standard here. Except the more easy-going atmosphere and the great amount of creativity.
Vintage, chic, second-hand and everything in between The collections of the shops show that the owners are passionate enthusiasts. Many of them have made their hobby their job. If you love clothes with just something special, you can indulge yourself in the more than fifty clothes shops. No sameness here, but mainly colourful, chic, trendy, exciting, vintage or second-hand clothes. The second-hand shops in the Nine Streets are famous for vintage, chic and second-hand clothes in Amsterdam by the way.
Unlike anything else All the shops really show sincere interests: shoe shops with unusual collections, a sock shop for men, specialised bookshops, a cheese shop with hundreds of different types of cheeses and have you ever seen a White Teeth shop before? ■
TIPS! • On de9straatjes.nl/uk/ you can see the amount of specialised shops • Most shops in the Nine Streets are also open on Sundays, after 12.00 hours. • There are various small cafés in the Nine Streets that sell healthy sandwiches, smoothies, cheesecake and other goodies. 14 amsterdamjournal.nl

A unique characteristic of the nine streets is that you will not find any chain stores here; in fact almost all of the stores in the nine streets are speciality stores of some kind. From cheese to chocolates, fancy dress to second-hand clothing, antiques to art deco, tearooms and lunchrooms to bars; kitsch, retro and loungy are all represented in these nine unique and distinctive streets. “The whole world is built around Amsterdam” wrote the world famous in Holland poet Joost van den Vondel in the seventeenth century. This century - being the Dutch Golden Age - was for Amsterdam a previously unexperienced period of prosperity. People came to the city for business or a decent living. The old town area became too small, so an extension was inevitable and three new main canals were dug out: Heren-, Keizers- and Prinsengracht. Between them cross-canals and -streets. The quarter of ‘9 Streets’ was constructed in the first half of the 17th century and was from the beginning until now dominated by trade and culture. The names of the streets remind us of the old artisans dealing with all kinds of skins
16 amsterdamjournal.nl
for the leather-industry. The area permits a general view of the architecture of all kinds of houses. Among these houses are the beautiful Vingboon-Houses and the building ‘Felix Meritis’. The Felix Meritis-building dates from 1787. It was ordered by the Felix MeritisSociety. This society was guided by the enlightenment and the ideals of those days. In this building the first Amsterdam (oval) concert-hall was constructed. By means of concerts, lessons and tests the public was actively involved. With a short intermission it has always cleared the way for cultural purposes. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was heard in the no longer exisiting municipal theater on the Keizersgracht. On the Herengracht you’ll find the Biblical Museum. The collection is quite diverse with in its heart the Book itself (the oldest dating from 1477), an important number of temple models, archeological finds from Egypt and so on. In the Gasthuismolensteeg nr. 7 you will find the Dutch Spectacles Museum. It reveals the history of spectacles over 700 years. In the neighbourhood of our quar-
ter of the ‘9 Streets’ is the Royal Palace, the former Town Hall, built in 1648, the Westerkerk where Rembrandt was buried and the Anne Frank House in which the Frank family was hiding from l942 until l944. Here Anne wrote her famous diary. Visit us and find for yourself that our ‘9 Streets’ are an ideal framework to explore Amsterdam in all it’s facets and richness. Moreover you’ll have the experience that our quarter itself is an exclusive shopping area with an unmatched range of shops, studios, restaurants and hotels. ■

MUSEUM KWARTIER
See the masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with your own eyes. There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes. Where to begin? Rijksmuseum (National Museum) In this impressive monumental building dating from 1885 you will find the famous masterpieces of Dutch and Flemish painters from the fifteenth up to and including the nineteenth century. Here you will also find Rembrandt’s world-famous Night Watch (1650). Other masters to be found here are: Jan Steen, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer. After a long renovation project the Rijksmuseum has been open again completely since April.
Van Gogh Museum When you walk through this museum you clearly see how this painter developed. As sombre as the paintings are that he made in the Netherlands, so colourful and vivid are the works that he made on French soil. You will also find works of contemporaries like Monet and Gauguin in the museum.
Stedelijk Museum (Municipal Museum) The Stedelijk Museum, established in 1874, has a large collection of classical, modern and contemporary art. The museum owns about 90.000 objects from practically all important 20th and 21st century schools.
Concertgebouw (Concert building)
TIPS! • If you don’t like waiting, you just order your Museum tickets online. •
During the concert season (mid-September to the end of June) a free lunch concert is given in the Concertgebouw on Wednesdays: between 12.00 and 12.30 hours.
• High Society shopping: parallel to Museumplein you will find the most stylish and most expensive shopping street of the Netherlands: P.C. Hooftstraat. • Diamond lovers visit the Diamond Museum Amsterdam (Paulus Potterstraat, opposite Museumplein) 18 amsterdamjournal.nl
In 1888 the first concert took place in this famous Concert building. The acoustics in the building are extraordinary. In 2013 the Concertgebouw is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Every month of the Jubilee year a different period from the history of the Concertgebouw are central.
Browsing around in antique shops Together with the adjacent Nieuwe Spiegelstraat, Spiegelgracht (opposite the Rijksmuseum) makes up the heart of the Spiegelkwartier; an area with many antique shops and galleries. ■

ZEEDIJK
CENTRUM
OLD TOWN
Visit the oldest streets of Amsterdam. Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. Although not appreciated by everyone, a tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. The Zeedijk and China Town Close to Central station you will find one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam: the Zeedijk. The place is swarming with restaurants, cafés and Indonesian shops (tokos). The Zeedijk is the centre of China Town; the Peking ducks hang behind the windows and a large Buddhist temple colours the street scene. From midday you will increasingly smell aromas that make your mouth water. Pull up a chair in one of the smaller Chinese restaurants. This is where Chinese Amsterdammers (or Amsterdam Chinese) eat too. Is there a line somewhere? Then the wait is very probably highly worthwhile!
Red light district The Red Light district covers the area between Zeedijk and Warmoesstraat. As soon as dusk falls and the shining red light greets you, the atmosphere is loose and laid back here. The ladies behind the windows wink playfully are friendly and wave to the merry passers-by. Do you want to get your breath back for a moment from all the impressions? There are plenty of pubs to recover while enjoying a beer.
Oude Kerksplein (Old Church Square) The Oude Kerksplein is special place in the heart of the Red Light district. The 14th century church is the oldest building still standing in Amsterdam. There’s a bronze statue on the square in honour of the prostitutes who have been active in this area for centuries. This lady is called ‘Belle’.

Artist Mark Raven
and his Contemporary City Impressions
Text: Sarah Saarberg
It is obvious that the artist Mark Raven loves his birthplace by each and every work he has made of Amsterdam. This city never ceases to captivate and inspire him. Mark’s work is modern and wayward, but is unmistakably connected to this versatile and interesting capitol of ours. If Marks Raven’s father had had his way, Mark would have become a journalist. At the time, he followed his advice and went to the school for journalism. But he clearly was destined for other things. The artist explains his chosen medium: “The image, as means of communication, is far more appealing to me than text. Moreover, an image is universal. Everyone understands it.” And so, Mark installed himself as a street artist on a rug in the tunnel underneath the Rijksmuseum to capture the city in every way. “I love the city. But I love people too. I immediately want to show them what I make.”
Kiosk on Museumplein Mark’s work was liked right from the beginning. So much even, that the city council helped him to a studio right on the Museumplein in the form of a rebuild flower stall. Mark wanted his art to be accessible for everyone, and so he began to print t-shirts and posters with his work. “I would like it if everyone could enjoy my view of Amsterdam,” he simply says.
in the tradition of Rembrandt’s etchings and M.C. Escher’s graphic work, but gradually generated his modern touch. Mark combines traditional etching techniques with painting and modern graphic and digital techniques. All in a style that appeals to a lot of people. And not just tourists. Many Amsterdammers have a Mark Raven hanging on their wall.
Accessible for every budget Nowadays, Mark Raven is located at the renowned shoppingstreet of Amsterdam the “Leidsestraat” near the “Leidseplein” and he has a gallery slash shop on Nieuwe-zijds Voorburgwal, a fabulous location right behind Dam square next to Magna Plaza. On the ground floor you can buy t-shirts, posters, postcards and other articles, all with the recognizable Mark Raven art. Upstairs, you can find original prints, some printed in a limited edition, others not. This is for the reason that, despite his enormous success, Mark Raven wants to be attainable for every budget. “My boxes with coasters are very popular with backpackers. I like that: in this way, my view on Amsterdam will spread all around the world.”
Rembrandt and Escher Over the years, the art he has made, developed from highly detailed pen-and-ink drawings to a wilder and more suggestive play with lines. In his early days, Mark worked 22 amsterdamjournal.nl

The architecture of Amsterdam in the future. In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. Architecture and urban design Present and past have been brought together in the architecture and the urban design of the Docklands. The harbour feeling is still alive, but old warehouses have been given new functions and the diverging designs of various artists link up with each other perfectly. Admire the special houses on KNSM island, walk across the whole Java island via the pedestrian bridges and take a look at the Whale (or Sphinx) on the Sporenbrug on Borneo island. IJburg is absolutely worth a visit for architectural buffs. The urban design scheme here is based on the ‘collage city concept’. The island consists of 8 neighbourhoods, each of which has its own individual character.
Going out and music
TIPS! • Take a guided walk (also in the English language) on the Eastern Docklands
The Docklands attract many artistic people, so it comes as no surprise that when it comes to culture and going out there is plenty to do here. It’s mainly about contemporary classical music in the Music Building (Muziekgebouw) on IJ lake (a ten-minute walk from the back of the Central Station). The Bim house (Bim huis), that protrudes on the street side of the Music Building is a concert hall for jazz and improvised music. When you cross the IJ with the Ferry (Pont) from the back of the railway station, you get to another striking building: the Netherlands EYE Film Institute. The collection of the EYE comprises the complete film history.
• Visit the permanent showing in the basement of the EYE Film Institute Nederland for free. • Pay a visit to the beautiful Maritime Museum and get on board a replica of a VOC ship. (Kattenburgerplein 1) • Enjoy the sun on the roof terrace of the Nemo Science Centre (free of charge) or be surprised in this museum about technology and science. The Nemo Science Centre is equally interesting and fun for adults as it is for children. amsterdamjournal.nl 29

FROM 15 OCTOBER Five nationally known chefs accepted the challenge the Dutch Resistance Museum gave them: create a dish with ingredients that were available during the occupation years. Starring Pierre Wind, Bobby Rust, Angélique Schmeinck, Edwin Florès and Julius Jaspers. What did they come up with, and what did we eat during those five years of occupation? Was it more unhealthy, or was it not that bad? The new exhibition Food in wartime offers a new and surprising perspective on this period. In addition, also other aspects around food and eating during the Second World War are covered in the exhibition, told through personal stories.

20 UNTIL 27 NOVEMBER The fair of today for art, antiques and design. Every year more than 45,000 art lovers are inspired and tempted by the many thousands of works of art. Whether your interest lies in classical antiquity, old masters, photography, contemporary art, antiques, designer furniture or decorative objects, PAN is the perfect place to compare art, gather information and make surprising discoveries. Each object is vetted by independent experts for quality, authenticity and condition before the fair opens, giving you the assurance that you can buy with confidence.
TILL 7 DECEMBER AKINCI is proud to announce the first museum solo exhibition at FOAM of Melanie Bonajo, who holds a unique position in contemporary art. She has become an unconventional artist working in different disciplines including photography, video, installations, publications, performance and music. An interesting feature is her anarchist approach and her dynamic ability to constantly escape social conventions. Melanie Bonajo portrays this in an enthused, graceful and sometimes absurdist way and is not afraid to include herself. Foam premieres the third and final part of the trilogy, Nocturnal Gardening. The videos are presented in an installation in which the visitor is submerged.
TILL 15 NOVEMBER Reflex Gallery is delighted to announce a major exhibition of the work of Donald Baechler this September. This will be the first extensive exhibition in the Netherlands for the worldfamous American artist. One of the few continuously active members of the 1980s New York art scene, Baechler is an internationally acclaimed artist with a remarkable pedigree. In addition to his paintings, Baechler is known also for his large-scale sculptural work. His famous 30ft aluminium “Walking Figure”, situated in Westhampton, NY, is a dynamic cartoon-like strolling woman, caught as if in a freeze-frame, energising her surroundings.

TILL 8 OCTOBER, 2016 AKINCI will open the season with Counterpoint, an exhibtion in which the transformation of fact, alternative histories, and subjectivity are apparent themes. Roger Cremers (NL) steps up as the curator of his own show, presenting carefully selected work by befriended artists Mark Aerial Waller (UK) and Runa Islam (BD/UK) next to his new series of paintings. Though very different in approach, the artists share a deep interest in challenging the course of chronology through visual language, historic research, and scientific fact, which all three of them use as the main material for their work. In effect, the conjunction of their voices hit a striking conceptual counterpoint.
TILL 1 JANUARY 2017 The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam kicks off the cultural season by opening a large-scale presentation of contemporary design with 26 participants active in the field of ‘social design’. These designers dream aloud about a better world and are committed to finding answers to today’s problems. They experiment with new technologies, seek solutions for humanitarian or ecological disasters, use fiction to make the inconceivable conceivable, or challenge our consumer culture with designs that can be repaired or upcycled.
FROM 24 - 27 NOVEMBER Our capital will be the centre of the international art world. This year, the fifth edition of this unique event will take place - with more participants than ever before. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the best of what the art world has to offer. For art lovers, the Amsterdam Art Weekend is a genuine 360° experience, from early in the morning until late at night. In addition to numerous exhibitions, this year’s edition will feature lectures, film showings, artist talks, performances, gallery tours, thematic routes and informal gatherings.
1 OCTOBER - FEBRUARY 5 In the year that she would have turned 90, De Nieuwe Kerk will reflect on a great style icon: Marilyn Monroe. From October 1 until February 5 2017, the exhibition about her life and legacy, including numerous personal items from her house at 5th Helena Drive in Brentwood, California, can be visited. This biographical exhibition opens up Marilyn’s world; the successful and glamorous external appearance as well as her often lonely inner world, full of setbacks, as well as her witty, creative and progressive personality.

13 OCTOBER For the first time in cinemas, France’s historical stage comes to global audiences live from Paris with 3 timeless classics : Roméo et Juliette, le Misanthrope and Cyrano de Bergerac.
8 TILL 15 OCTOBER 5 TILL 13 NOVEMBER Dutch National Ballet is dancing La Bayadère in the highly acclaimed version first created for the prestigious American Ballet Theatre by former Russian ballerina Natalia Makarova, based on the original choreography by Marius Petipa, from 1877. Although the Mariinsky Ballet (then still the Kirov Ballet) danced the famous second act of La Bayadère in London and Paris in 1961, Makarova was the first to introduce the complete ballet to the West in 1980. Since then, there have been several interpretations by other choreographers, but Makarova’s production is still regarded internationally as the most beautiful and poetic La Bayadère.
10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28 AND 31 OCTOBER Hope and illusion of a tragic heroine. This new production of Manon Lescaut shifts the emphasis. Manon herself, sung by Eva Maria Westbroek, looks back on her life, instead of Manon’s lover.
The First: Roméo et Juliette by William Shakespeare In Verona, an old rivalry opposes the Capulet and Montaigu families. When Romeo Montaigu and Juliet Capulet fall for each other, they know their love is meant to be eternal. However they already sense its tragic ending…
34 amsterdamjournal.nl
IN SHORT Manon does not fit in the prudish society that surrounds her. She comes to grief through the conflict between her feelings for the poor student Des Grieux and her desire to climb the social ladder. Puccini said, ‘I love those souls who feel like we do, who are composed of hope and illusion, and who are laughing with joy one minute and weeping with despair the next’.
8, 9, 10 DECEMBER Spiritwalking (2014) is an exceptional and exclusive evening entirely devoted to the work of house choreographers Sol León and Paul Lightfoot. This site-specific choreography will be performed on the Westergasfabriek terrain in Amsterdam and is shown in a newly developed version. Spiritwalking takes the audience out of the traditional theatre space and into the gashouder, a former gasworks in Amsterdam. The ballet is accompanied by music that was especially composed for this piece by Philip Glass, which will be performed live by the Ragazze Kwartet.

10 - 12 OCTOBER To kick off the new season, Stage One gives the NDT audience an insight into the more risk-taking choreographers in the field today. It presents two world premieres and Thin Skin by NDT’s associate choreographer Marco Goecke, which was labelled “Original, dynamic and stunningly his own” by newspaper de Volkskrant when it premiered in 2015. Ranging from the feverishly quick and pulsating movements of Thin Skin to the haunting dreamscapes of Medhi Walerksi and the compelling club-scene inspired works by Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar, Stage One offers an evening full of surprising and innovative choreography and dance. Here, NDT proves once again that the company stands for creativity at SEPT. the highest level.
FROM 9 OCT. 29 DEC The Castle in the Air (‘Le 66!’) short comical opera by Jacques Offenbach (no language barrier) Jacques Offenbach wrote ‘No. 66!’ (The castle in the air) in 1856 for his own small theatre, a wooden auction hall at the ChampsElysées in Paris. Now, this unknown opéracomique can be seen in a former blacksmith’s - the theatre of the Amsterdam Marionette Theatre.
10 AND 11 NOVEMBER This NDT 2 programme offers a tryptic of ballets that is inspired by Bosch’s art and extensive use of symbolism. Giving a creative opportunity to a young new voice, chorographer Ji í Pokorný is invited to create a piece for the second company. In his young career, Pokorný has already become known for creating elaborate dream worlds. The programme will also show Some Other Time (2014) by house choreographers Sol León and Paul Lightfoot with black decor pieces seemingly floating across the stage. Out of Breath (2002) by guest choreographer Johan Inger concludes the evening with a strong symbolic piece centered around a curved white wall as a fortress arising from the ground.
A performance for both adults and children (min. 6 yrs.) of approx. 1 1/2 uur (a short interval included). The performance will be performed in Dutch, but because of the musical and visual character of the performance, there is no serious barrier of language..
1 AND 2 DECEMBER The program consists of three works by American choreographers: Pond Way by Merce Cunningham, Approximate Sonata by William Forsythe and Shahrazad by Jonah Bokaer. Last season, the Ballet of Flanders of artistic director Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and his assistant, Tamas Moricz, performed in the Royal Theatre Carré for the first time, with the successful program Van Manen/Cherkaoui. In December, the lead company returns with the triptych West, which shows the work of two great names in the dance world, Merce Cunningham and William Forsythe, and the rising talent Jonah Bokaer. Three American choreographers, each with their own vision, identity and unique language of movement. amsterdamjournal.nl 35

Amsterdam Metropolitan Area
The AMA lies to the north of the Randstad and encompasses the city of Amsterdam and the Dutch provinces of North Holland and Flevoland. The area has a totalpopulation of over 2 million inhabitants. The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (AMA) is comprised of several surrounding municipalities, including the cities of Amsterdam, Almere, Amstelveen and Haarlemmermeer, Hilversum and Velsen.
Flowers of Amsterdam: The Flower Strip is one of the most popular and unique sights in the Netherlands. Every spring the entire region bursts into vivid colour as bulbs shoot and millions of flowers blossom. One of the biggest attractions is the Keukenhof Gardens, the world’s largest flower gardens and a home to more varieties of tulip than you can imagine.
Old Holland With its countless windmills, churches and old-fashioned farmhouses, stepping out into Old Holland can feel like being in a Golden Age painting. Traditionally Dutch: Noord-Holland towns such as Marken, Volendam and Edam hark back to times of more honest crafts, show
casing the traditional skills the region was famous for: shipbuilding, fishing and cheese making. Alongside such classic industries, you can also experience the heritage of the industrial revolution – a time when smoking chimney stacks and spinning sails enabled the mass production of chocolate and biscuits.

Here are five of the best things to do around the area known as Castles & Gardens!
6) Experience the staunch beauty of the fortified town of Naarden.
1) Cycle along the River Vecht The winding River Vecht between Amsterdam and Utrecht is a wonderful setting for a cycle route. The bank offers an open view of the imposing castles (such as at Breukelen and Muiden), picturesque villages, ambitious country estates and accompanying tearooms. Rich merchants from the Golden Age once spent their summer months here.
What is the Gooi & Vecht area’s secret? Why does this area harbour so many fortresses and castles? What was it that needed all this protection? It might be hard to imagine now, but this peaceful part of Holland used to be the ultimate defence line against enemies from the east trying to get to Amsterdam’s riches. That is why the Dutch started building these defences in the Middle Ages. The sturdy Amsterdam Castle (Muiderslot) controled the river Vecht’s estuary, the fortified town of Naarden (shaped in the form of a star) guarded the only piece of dry land between the South Sea (Zuiderzee) and the lakes. Later the fortresses and fortified towns like Weesp, Muiden and Naarden worked together to keep the entire area safe. Nowadays this peaceful and pretty area does not need all these military forces. But the fortresses, castles and fortified towns are still an essential part of the landscape. They are waiting for you to come and explore them!
The holidaymakers ‘only’ needed five to seven hours to reach their rural residence. Thankfully, it’s much quicker today – many of the best attractions around the Castles & Gardens are an enjoyable bike ride from Amsterdam. 2) Go boating Much like in the olden days, travelling on the water is still one of the best ways to explore the countryside, offering splendid vistas whilst being a meditative mode of transport close to nature. For example, you could hire a boat in Uithoorn and explore the Amstel River countryside. Meanwhile by the River Vecht, the charming town of Muiden is a must for boat lovers, with countless ships sailing into and out of the historic harbour.
Must sees in Naarden are Fortress Naarden, now a Museum called the Vesting Museum and Yacht Harbour Naarden.
3) Marvel at the extravagant country estates Enjoy the grandeur of the beautiful country houses dating from the Golden Age, when Amsterdam’s wealthy merchants would leave their primary residence in the heart of Amsterdam and retreat to their rural estates in summertime. South-east of Amsterdam, on the banks of the Amstel River and the River Vecht, you can still bike and boat past these historic houses with their acres of beautifully manicured gardens. Some are open to the public while others leave you dreaming of an aristocratic life by the water. 4) Unleash your inner knight or damsel at the medieval fortress stretch Home to many old castles, fortified towns and ruins, the picturesque fortress stretch offers a vivid window into medieval times. Muiden is one of the most spectacular examples, with the grand Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot, built around 1285 by Count Floris V, looming over the mouth of the picturesque River Vecht. A square castle with a drawbridge, five towers, battlements and embrasures, Muiderslot is a true medieval water stronghold. As well as providing a historic snapshot it’s a funfilled museum for all the family: you can take a tour through the impressive knight’s hall, towers, dungeon and armoury; stroll through the beautiful herb and vegetable gardens that still retain the atmosphere of the Dutch Renaissance and enjoy the fantastic views from the ramparts. 5) Feel like a Golden-Age painter Alongside the River Amstel, you will find a stunning, peaceful spot of countryside: lose yourself in the swaying reeds, green meadows and historic villages, such as Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, which dates from the 12th century. In the Golden Age, famous artists would retreat to the area to capture its wild nature. Take a romantic stroll and then have tea or dinner in one of the many quality eateries and cafes along the way. amsterdamjournal.nl 45

There is much happening in Haarlem, all year round. Wayward exhibition on “De Maakbare Mens” (Manmade Man) in the Dolhuys Museum Schotersingel 2 | 2021 GE Haarlem info@hetdolhuys.nl | www.hetdolhuys.nl Ever met a perfect person? So… how was it? The Dolhuys, museum of the mind, presents their new exhibition “De Maakbare Mens” (Manmade Man’) with this slogan. The museum puts artificiality up for discussion in a unique way. The jubilee exhibition is designed by design agency Kossmann.dejong and can be seen until the end of 2016. Many Dutch people want to be perfect nowadays. We strive for a healthy spirit, impeccable behavior and a perfect body. We collectively post an ideal image of ourselves on Facebook every day, but can we always continue to meet these high standards? People who cannot, are excluded. The “imperfect” do not belong, are insane, limited, scary, pathetic or unwell. But to be truly successful, think of artists and scientists, should you not deviate from the norm?
The visitor comes face-to-face with their own “artificiality” with a selfie. They will meet a wide range of special minds, including the successful writer Myrthe van der Meer, the artists Edvard Munch, Vincent van Gogh, Willem van Genk and Anton Heijboer. On the basis of works of art, films and photography the audience will get a glimpse into their mind. In an audiovisual presentation based on quotes from letters of Munch and Van Gogh and visual clips of their work, both artists talk about the link between their mental illness and their artistry. Van Gogh spent some time in a psychiatric facility. Munch did not think of himself as ill, but saw his fear as the basis for his art.

New Land Although famous for its historic city centre, the Amsterdam region is always evolving as new immigrants and diverse cultures make their mark on many neighbourhoods. But probably the most dramatic changes have taken place in the province of Flevoland. Architecture & nature Just north east of Amsterdam, these polders were reclaimed from the sea, giving birth to the new cities of Almere and Lelystad. Not only are they internationally acclaimed playgrounds for architecture and design, they are also blessed with expanses of wild nature on the doorstep.
Formula 1 races were once held. In the summer there is something on nearly every weekend. Tip: Visit Zandvoort aan Zee by train or use your Region Day Ticket to travel to Amsterdam Beach by bus.

Or keep things frugal by an open fire in the warmth of a beach café. This will leave you some money for the casino or for a relaxed day at one of the beauty and wellness salons. Zandvoort’s fame also stems from the racing circuit that was created in 1848 and where

ZAANSE SCHANS With its traditional green painted houses, warehouses and windmills the Zaanse Schans gives the feeling of having stepped back into the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries. Most of the buildings were relocated from other areas in the Zaanstreek in the 1960’s and 70’s as owing to urban development they were under threat of obliteration.
The Zaanse Schans offers a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape as it was before and after the industrial revolution. However this is not an open air museum but a colourful living and working neighbourhood. Most of the buildings were re-located from other areas in the Zaanstreek in the 1960’s and 70’s as owing to urban development they were under threat of obliteration. This panorama makes the Zaanse Schans a vital link in the European Route of Industrial Heritage. Windmills A visit to a working industrial windmill is a unique experience. Paint mill De Kat and oil mill De Zoeker are open daily from March to October. From November to February most of the windmills at the Zaanse Schans only open at the weekends. The smaller, specialized museums such as the first Albert Heijn Grocery shop, the Bakery Museum ‘In de Gecroonde Duyvekater’ where traditional delicacies are sold, Museum of the Dutch Clock, are all situated at the Zaanse Schans in listed buildings bringing the history of this oldest industrial area to life. 50 amsterdamjournal.nl

Volendam is the most remarkable picturesque fishing village just some 10-15 miles from Amsterdam. It dates from the era when the, now lake, IJsselmeer still was a part of the North Sea. In Volendam, if you’re lucky, you will see people in traditional costumes. As a result of its insulated location, the village preserved its character for six centuries, also because of the tough vitality of the fishermen. The characteristic small houses, which together with the canals and the drawbridges form the most picturesque spots, present the visitor an atmosphere of geniality and romance. History and Fame The name Volendam stems from Vol-entdam, which means as much as the finishing of a dam. Volendam is located on the site of the former (way back in 1357) harbour of the historic city of Edam. As Edam started a new harbour, the old one formed a new settlement, and got the name Volendam. The population of the town grew only very slowly during those first centuries of its existence. In 1462 it only had 25 inhabitants, whereas today some 19,000. Around 1875, Volendam became known as a town worth visiting by tourists, and was thusly immortalized by writers and artists. Volendam became written about both nationally and internatio-nally, and magazines published

photographs of stalwart fishermen by the harbour, of the women in their graceful traditional dress and of children playing in front of picturesque houses. The rich and famous flocked to this humble fishing town, where it seemed as if time had stood still. Volendam became an artist’s paradise, with people in graceful traditional costumes, the wooden little houses built closely together against, protected from the sea by the sturdy dike; their interiors replete with statuettes of saints and the harbour crowded with hundreds of red-sailed ‘botters’ (fishing boats). Some elements of this are now of the past (the herring fishery was finished when the sea was closed off), but

Origin of Traditional Quality
Excellence on the IJsselmeer a benchmark for Volendam’s tradition and quality Paviljoen Smit-Bokkum is the home of an eel smoke-house since 1856, where the 5th generation of the Smit-Bokkum family daily smokes Holland’s best fish, preserving the ancient family recipe. The Smit-Bokkum family restaurant next to the smokehouse serves home-smoked delicacies together with a selection of local traditional menus. Especially the famous home-smoked IJsselmeer eels daily draws a client base from all over the country. Smit-Bokkum’s lovely terrace offers seats for over 100 guests. Seated here you can take in the magnificent views of the IJsselmeer and the Marinapark harbour. TIP: A dinner or lunch at Smit-Bokkum can also be combined with a guided tour through the smoke-house and a visit to the Palingsoundmuseum above the restaurant.

if you are curious about how the Volendam costume was worn and what the interiors of the houses looked like, do visit the Volendammer Museum to experience a little of the Volendam of yesteryear. The Costume The costumes of Volendam are world-renowned. Around the entire world you can see portraits of people who have had themselves photographed in Volendam costume at the time of their visit to the place. The most famous part of the Dutch costume is of course the wooden shoes or “clogs”. The clog has gone a little bit out of fashion these days, but you can still occasionally see people walk around on them. Getting There There are several ways to visit the town. Probably the easiest way will be the booking of a daytrip by a tour operator. I’m sure the genitor of your hotel will be able to help you with this Waterland Monnickendam, Marken, Broek in Waterland, Ilpendam, Katwoude, Overleek, Purmer, Watergang, Uitdam and Zuiderwoude are known as Waterland.
54 amsterdamjournal.nl
Each one of these places has its own charm and a cultural and historical background that makes a visit very worth while. Enjoy the well-maintained monuments that adorn the old cityscapes and village views. Nearly half of the entire surface area of Waterland consists of water (no less than 5000 hectares). The municipality thus provides considerable opportunities for water recreation; sailing on the Markermeer or IJsselmeer lakes and having a drink at one of the outdoor cafes in one of the picturesque villages or cities. If you would like to explore Waterland by boat, consider a whispering boat, motorboat, rowing boat or canoe. Explore the best of Waterland on the water, between the reeds, with a gentle breeze for company. Waterland is also pre-eminently suitable for walking tours and bicycle rides. The decor consists of open grass polders, peat rivers and ribbon development villages with colourful woorden houses and traditional Dutch farmhouses built in the shape of pyramids. All places in Waterland are in easy reach from Amsterdam, whether by car, public transport or. ■

special
Restaurant Vermeer: NH Hotel Barbizon Palace in Amsterdam 56 amsterdamjournal.nl
Whatever your taste is, Amsterdam has it. Amsterdam has all the nightlife you would expect. There are intimate restaurants, bars with or without live music, hip dance clubs, comedy clubs, and a casino. A complete list would fill a whole book, so we can only give you some recommendations here.
restaurants | cafés As one might expect from a cosmopolitan city, Amsterdam not only offers the possibility of enjoying classical French cuisine, but since a few decades the city has also abounded in - sometimes surprisingly good - Greek, Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese, Korean and even Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants. This fact has caused the extensive, daily public market in Albert Cuypstraat to adapt its range to the purchasing requirements of these restaurants. For a quick cheap lunchtime bite try the sandwich shops, the chips stands or herring stalls. Eating maatjes (‘mates’) herring is quite possibly the only important culinary tradition of our otherwise in this respect poorly endowed country. Amsterdam is also a city with many bars and cafés, some 1,500 in all. Each of the areas mentioned below has something to offer, from friendly and relaxed brown cafés, stylish grand cafés to crowded designer bars. The cafés and bars vary greatly and have their own special attraction: a wide range of beers, jenever (Dutch gin), live music, canal-side terraces, board games, pool tables or just good old fun.
bars | live music Amsterdam has some great small bars where you enter for free and or a small fee to listen to live music. Singer-songwriters, jazz, pop, folk or even classical music. You just have to know where to go.
cocktails | dinner The Venice of the North, Amsterdam’s attractions are considerable. Besides the famed red-light areas where window-shopping takes on a whole new meaning and the coffee bars that are more popular for their other wares, Amsterdam is also home to hundreds of great bars and clubs: style bars, cocktail bars, bistros, restaurants and casinos, and the famous brown cafes where you can linger long over a beer and watch the people of Amsterdam go about their business. Once you’ve visited the museum quarter and taken a tour of the canals, you can hit the town. A night out in the many bars of Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein should see you into the small hours.
