DISC OVER
City of Amsterdam Where to begin? That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you the Amsterdam Journal has divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. Each area has its own character. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown (referring to the dark wood interiors) pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands (Museumkwartier – Museum Quarter), large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops (Centrum (Centre), de Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)

DID YOU KNOW THAT: Amsterdammers also call their city Mokum? Amsterdam was originally built on piles? You can more or less deduce from the gables how old a canalside house is? Amsterdam has more canals and bridges than Venice? The Amsterdam ring of canals has been on the UNESCO world heritage list since 2010?

The return of Jakop Ahlbom’s award-winning play Lebensraum Language no problem! 24 - 27 August in DeLaMar Theater! After travelling around the world for 3 years, the awardwinning show Lebensraum (Habitat) returns to Amsterdam. Jakop Ahlbom once again brings the magic of silent movies to the stage, with the help of the band Alamo Race Track. Lebensraum is inspired by the work of actor and filmmaker Buster Keaton, a pioneer of slapstick and physical comedy. The international press on Lebensraum: Dig Boston/USA: `Lebensraum: Pure physical comedy, pure fuckin’fun’ Boston Globe/USA: `Lebensraum challenges and inspires audience’ El Pais/ SP: ‘ Pantomima genial’ Volkskrant ‘Jakop Ahlbom, Reinier Schimmel and Silke Hundertmark are ingenious conjurers in this piece of living-room slapstick that draws on movements and timing from the silent movie era.’ **** De Telegraaf ‘Lebensraum is surreal physical theatre with a hint of magic.’ **** Observer/UK: `Excellent! Hundertmark is extraordinary’ Libération/FR: `Le spectacle Lebensraum a fait l’effet d’une bombe’
Two men are living together in a single tiny room. They have ingenuously solved the problem of lack of space. All the furniture has multiple functions: the bed doubles as a piano and the bookcase serves as a fridge. And to compensate for the absence of a woman, the pair create a mechanical cleaning lady. But it soon becomes clear that she has no intention of quietly going about her chores. This doll has opinions of her own. Tensions mount, and the room starts getting smaller and smaller. The men’s latest invention may be their downfall. DELAMAR THEATER Marnixstraat 402 - Amsterdam Tickets available at www.delamar.nl or by phone 0900 - 33 52 627 (1€ per call)

A dark remake of an iconic Fairytale Swan Lake Language no problem! 21 till 30 June in Theater de Meervaart! With eight dancers, a live band, animal heads and knife throwers, it’s fair to say that Jakop Ahlbom bends the world-famous fairy tale entirely to his will. The characters in Swan Lake discover their darker sides, manipulative tendencies, jealousy and vengefulness, as well as the truth that love doesn’t conquer all. Alamo Race Track transform the original music by Tchaikovsky into their own characteristic style with influences from indie, folk and pop. The band will also compose new music for the production and will be performing live on stage every night. SWAN LAKE is the first dance performance by Jakop Ahlbom in collaboration with ICK under the directorship of Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten. Jakop Ahlbom Over the past decade, Ahlbom developed a specific style of his own, mixing theatre, mime, dance and illusionism into a unique theatrical language. Ahlbom toured extensively abroad, both in Europe and in the US, with award-winning performances such as VIELFALT, LEBENSRAUM and HORROR. He directed the opera HOFFMANN with Deutsche Oper Berlin, Franz Kafka’s DER PROZESS for Staatstheater Mainz and choreographed the dance film award-winning OFF GROUND. ICK Amsterdam ICK is a celebrated platform for dance under the directorship of Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten. Their work has a unique way of bridging the distinction between abstract and narrative dance, to which the intuitively moving body is always central. The ensemble has received numerous prestigious (international) prizes and has been touring the world for the last twenty years. JORDAAN
Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. In the past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot! Authentic working class area You can wander around through the streets and side streets in a relaxed way and enjoy the spontaneous and relaxed atmosphere. You can experience the typical atmosphere of the Jordaan, in streets like Westerstraat, Tweede Anjeliersdwarsstraat, Tweede Tuindwarsstraat and around the Noordermarkt. On Saturdays you will find the best organic farmer’s market of Amsterdam on the Noordermarkt, directly opposite the Noorderkerk (Noorder church).
Pubs/Bars and shops When you walk from the Noorderkerk to the Westerkerk (Western church) – the recogni zable church that has a blue-red crown on its tower - , you will automatically get to the Westermarkt. Here you will find the monument for gay people (1987), consisting of three large pink granite triangles. From here you can go straight onto Rozengracht (Rozen canal). This shopping street is very well-liked because of its diversity of nice shops.
Anne Frank house Also not far from the Westerkerk, you can take a look in the Anne Frank’s Achterhuis. Behind a closet that turns out to be a door, you will find the small house where she wrote in her diary. Very oppressive.
The real pub life ‘Gezellig. This Dutch word – that can barely be translated properly -, applies perfectly to the typical (brown) pubs in the Jordaan. The atmosphere is easy-going, the people are spontaneous and speak with a very broad Amsterdam accent. You will regularly hear the sound of original Dutch music. ■
TIPS! • Do you want to visit the Anne Frank House (Prinsengracht 267)? Be there on time and prepare for serious waiting times. • Find Dutch conviviality in one of the over 60 (brown) cafés in the Jordaan. • Visit the fabric market (Lapjesmarkt) on the Noordermarkt: Mondays 8.00 – 14.00 hours. • 8 amsterdamjournal.nl
Feel like going on a shopping spree? At the edge of the Jordaan you will find the Haarlemmerstraat and the Haarlemmerdijk with many contemporary and unique and edgy clothes shops.
ARTIST KEREN DE VREEDE MODERN ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM
Art in the Jordaan There are many little galleries in Amsterdam, but in 2012 a new gallery opened its doors. This gallery has brought color and joy to the mix of art being offered around the Jordaan area. Already named best new coming gallery by the UK Guardian, Keren de Vreede Art Gallery with it’s magnificent works of art is definitely worth a visit. Hands on Keren de Vreede paints with merely her hands and lives her art. Bright colors, thick paint and bold and daring lines are the characteristics of her paintings. They reflect her passion for life, her positive outlook and her bright personality. A self-taught artist who discovered the desire to paint in her early years. Having used all kind of materials in the past, she prefers acrylic paint to express her creativity and achieve the result she is looking for. Instead of using the traditional easel, she positions her canvas on the floor. Her style can be described as modern abstract expressionism. Her paintings have been bought by art lovers and collectors from all over the world.

Gallery When visiting Amsterdam, weave your way down to the Prinsengracht, and make sure you visit Keren de Vreede’s Art Gallery, where the local artist is happy to chat about her textural floral canvases. Her paintings are not only very beautiful, they are also truly exceptional. Every painting is unique and impossible to replicate, even by Keren herself.

9 STRAATJES Nine small streets
full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. Not far behind Dam Square, between the well-known ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. Pleasant, unique and bold In former times the workshops of craftsmen could be found in Reestraat, Berenstraat, Runstraat, Hartenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Huidenstraat, Gasthuismolensteeg, Oude Spiegelstraat and Wijde Heisteeg. Nowadays the small streets are full of specialist shops. If you want to snap up something special, you are bound to be successful here. Contrary to the large shops in the city centre, nothing is standard here. Except the more easy-going atmosphere and the great amount of creativity.
Vintage, chic, second-hand and everything in between The collections of the shops show that the owners are passionate enthusiasts. Many of them have made their hobby their job. If you love clothes with just something special, you can indulge yourself in the more than fifty clothes shops. No sameness here, but mainly colourful, chic, trendy, exciting, vintage or second-hand clothes. The second-hand shops in the Nine Streets are famous for vintage, chic and second-hand clothes in Amsterdam by the way.
Unlike anything else All the shops really show sincere interests: shoe shops with unusual collections, a sock shop for men, specialised bookshops, a cheese shop with hundreds of different types of cheeses and have you ever seen a White Teeth shop before? ■
TIPS! • On de9straatjes.nl/uk/ you can see the amount of specialised shops • Most shops in the Nine Streets are also open on Sundays, after 12.00 hours. • There are various small cafés in the Nine Streets that sell healthy sandwiches, smoothies, cheesecake and other goodies. 12 amsterdamjournal.nl

The 9 shopping in Streets A unique characteristic of the nine streets is that you will not find any chain stores here; in fact almost all of the stores in the nine streets are speciality stores of some kind. From cheese to chocolates, fancy dress to second-hand clothing, antiques to art deco, tearooms and lunchrooms to bars; kitsch, retro and loungy are all represented in these nine unique and distinctive streets. “The whole world is built around Amsterdam” wrote the world famous in Holland poet Joost van den Vondel in the seventeenth century. This century - being the Dutch Golden Age - was for Amsterdam a previously unexperienced period of prosperity. People came to the city for business or a decent living. The old town area became too small, so an extension was inevitable and three new main canals were dug out: Heren-, Keizers- and Prinsengracht. Between them cross-canals and -streets. The quarter of ‘9 Streets’ was constructed in the first half of the 17th century and was from the beginning until now dominated by trade and culture. The names of the streets remind us of the old artisans dealing with all kinds of skins for the leather-industry. The area permits a general view of the architecture of all kinds of houses. Among these houses are the beautiful Vingboon-Houses and the building ‘Felix Meritis’. The Felix Meritisbuilding dates from 1787.
It was ordered by the Felix Meritis-Society. This society was guided by the enlightenment and the ideals of those days. In this building the first Amsterdam (oval) concert-hall was constructed. By means of concerts, lessons and tests the public was actively involved. With a short intermission it has always cleared the way for cultural purposes. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was heard in the no longer exisiting municipal theater on the Keizersgracht. On the Herengracht you’ll find the Biblical Museum. The collection is quite diverse with in its heart the Book itself (the oldest dating from 1477), an important number of temple models, archeological finds from Egypt and so on. In the Gasthuismolensteeg nr. 7 you will find the Dutch Spectacles Museum. It reveals the history of spectacles over 700 years. In the neighbourhood of our quarter of the ‘9 Streets’ is the Royal Palace, the former Town Hall, built in 1648, the Westerkerk where Rembrandt was buried and the Anne Frank House in which the Frank family was hiding from l942 until l944. Here Anne wrote her famous diary. Visit us and find for yourself that our ‘9 Streets’ are an ideal framework to explore Amsterdam in all it’s facets and richness. Moreover you’ll have the experience that our quarter itself is an exclusive shopping area with an unmatched range of shops, studios, restaurants and hotels. ■

MUSEUM KWARTIER
See the masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with your own eyes. There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes. Where to begin? Rijksmuseum (National Museum) In this impressive monumental building dating from 1885 you will find the famous masterpieces of Dutch and Flemish painters from the fifteenth up to and including the nineteenth century. Here you will also find Rembrandt’s world-famous Night Watch (1650). Other masters to be found here are: Jan Steen, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer. After a long renovation project the Rijksmuseum has been open again completely since April.
Van Gogh Museum When you walk through this museum you clearly see how this painter developed. As sombre as the paintings are that he made in the Netherlands, so colourful and vivid are the works that he made on French soil. You will also find works of contemporaries like Monet and Gauguin in the museum.
Stedelijk Museum (Municipal Museum) The Stedelijk Museum, established in 1874, has a large collection of classical, modern and contemporary art. The museum owns about 90.000 objects from practically all important 20th and 21st century schools.
Concertgebouw (Concert building)
TIPS! • If you don’t like waiting, you just order your Museum tickets online. •
During the concert season (mid-September to the end of June) a free lunch concert is given in the Concertgebouw on Wednesdays: between 12.00 and 12.30 hours.
• High Society shopping: parallel to Museumplein you will find the most stylish and most expensive shopping street of the Netherlands: P.C. Hooftstraat. • Diamond lovers visit the Diamond Museum Amsterdam (Paulus Potterstraat, opposite Museumplein) 16 amsterdamjournal.nl
In 1888 the first concert took place in this famous Concert building. The acoustics in the building are extraordinary. In 2013 the Concertgebouw is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Every month of the Jubilee year a different period from the history of the Concertgebouw are central.
Browsing around in antique shops Together with the adjacent Nieuwe Spiegelstraat, Spiegelgracht (opposite the Rijksmuseum) makes up the heart of the Spiegelkwartier; an area with many antique shops and galleries. ■

ZEEDIJK
CENTRUM
OLD TOWN
A proper neighbourhood with its own personality: the soul of Amsterdam’s Old Town Zeedijk lies in the historic centre of Amsterdam, within five minutes’ walk of Amsterdam Central Station. As soon as you turn the corner, you will taste the history and be tempted by special little shops and the smells of delicious fresh food coming from every direction - particularly at the Chinatown end of the street. Zeedijk is the oldest part of Amsterdam’s historic centre. One place where you can get a sense of that lively history is Zeedijk 1, in café In ’t Aepjen. This wooden building dates back to 1544 and supposedly inspired a well-known Dutch saying, ‘In de aap gelogeerd zijn’, which means to be staying at the aap or, less literally, to be up the creek without a paddle. Another ‘brown café’ with its own story is ‘t Mandje, Amsterdam’s oldest gay bar, where everyone is welcomed. There are several other gay shops, bars and restaurants on the Zeedijk. The neighbourhood is one of the historic gay area’s of the city. Spending GayPride on the Zeedijk will show you the genuine atmosphere of a Zeedijk street party.
Chinatown Amsterdam is Europe’s oldest Chinatown In the 1950s, Amsterdam’s Chinese population began to settle on and around Zeedijk in numbers. The first Chinese were brought to Amsterdam in 1911 g as cheap labour. Forced by the economic crisis of the 1930s and the arrival of motorised ships, they went looking for other sources of income.
Amsterdam’s Chinatown owes its Chinese specialist stores, Chinese health shops and authentic Chinese kitchens to these developments. Plus, of course, there is its splendid Chinese Buddhist Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple.
A neighbourhood with personality: the soul of Amsterdam’s Old Town The 1970s and ’80s were turbulent times for Zeedijk. The port activities had shifted to the west of Amsterdam and the neighbourhood was now swamped with heroin dealers. It was even officially declared an emergency no-go area. These days, there is no sign of that anymore. On the contrary! Thanks to the fact that local people tackled its problems together, Zeedijk has developed into a particularly pleasant street with a real sense of solidarity among business owners, residents and visitors, many of whom are regulars.
Eating and drinking Each one of the cafés, lunchrooms, tearooms and restaurants has something special about it, in terms of both the inte-
riors and the international menus: if you like personal, small-scale, home-made and fresh-from-the-oven food, you’ll find it hard to make a choice. And of course there are some well-known Chinese restaurants. Fortunately, Zeedijk is open for business from breakfast to dinner and from high tea to dessert. Night owls, too, are well catered for: the nightclubs and cafés keep their doors open until the early hours.
Something to see everywhere The shops all have their own look and stories too. This makes a Zeedijk a miniature heaven for lovers of craftsmanship, collectors of special products and everyone who enjoys feasting their eyes. It is a case of taking your time and keeping your eyes open as you stroll around, otherwise you will miss a lot. Those who do this will be rewarded by the many specialist shops offering everything from designer toys, special underwear and cool trainers to fetish clothing, comic books from all over the world and designer fashion. You have been warned: the risk of ‘system overload’ is ever present! Text: Dorien ter Veld

Artist Mark Raven
and his Contemporary City Impressions
Text: Sarah Saarberg
It is obvious that the artist Mark Raven loves his birthplace by each and every work he has made of Amsterdam. This city never ceases to captivate and inspire him. Mark’s work is modern and wayward, but is unmistakably connected to this versatile and interesting capitol of ours. If Marks Raven’s father had had his way, Mark would have become a journalist. At the time, he followed his advice and went to the school for journalism. But he clearly was destined for other things. The artist explains his chosen medium: “The image, as means of communication, is far more appealing to me than text. Moreover, an image is universal. Everyone understands it.” And so, Mark installed himself as a street artist on a rug in the tunnel underneath the Rijksmuseum to capture the city in every way. “I love the city. But I love people too. I immediately want to show them what I make.”
Kiosk on Museumplein Mark’s work was liked right from the beginning. So much even, that the city council helped him to a studio right on the Museumplein in the form of a rebuild flower stall. Mark wanted his art to be accessible for everyone, and so he began to print t-shirts and posters with his work. “I would like it if everyone could enjoy my view of Amsterdam,” he simply says.
in the tradition of Rembrandt’s etchings and M.C. Escher’s graphic work, but gradually generated his modern touch. Mark combines traditional etching techniques with painting and modern graphic and digital techniques. All in a style that appeals to a lot of people. And not just tourists. Many Amsterdammers have a Mark Raven hanging on their wall.
Accessible for every budget Nowadays, Mark Raven is located at the renowned shoppingstreet of Amsterdam the “Leidsestraat” near the “Leidseplein” and he has a gallery slash shop on Nieuwe-zijds Voorburgwal, a fabulous location right behind Dam square next to Magna Plaza. On the ground floor you can buy t-shirts, posters, postcards and other articles, all with the recognizable Mark Raven art. Upstairs, you can find original prints, some printed in a limited edition, others not. This is for the reason that, despite his enormous success, Mark Raven wants to be attainable for every budget. “My boxes with coasters are very popular with backpackers. I like that: in this way, my view on Amsterdam will spread all around the world.”

The architecture of Amsterdam in the future. In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. Architecture and urban design Present and past have been brought together in the architecture and the urban design of the Docklands. The harbour feeling is still alive, but old warehouses have been given new functions and the diverging designs of various artists link up with each other perfectly. Admire the special houses on KNSM island, walk across the whole Java island via the pedestrian bridges and take a look at the Whale (or Sphinx) on the Sporenbrug on Borneo island. IJburg is absolutely worth a visit for architectural buffs. The urban design scheme here is based on the ‘collage city concept’. The island consists of 8 neighbourhoods, each of which has its own individual character.
Going out and music
TIPS! • Take a guided walk (also in the English language) on the Eastern Docklands
The Docklands attract many artistic people, so it comes as no surprise that when it comes to culture and going out there is plenty to do here. It’s mainly about contemporary classical music in the Music Building (Muziekgebouw) on IJ lake (a ten-minute walk from the back of the Central Station). The Bim house (Bim huis), that protrudes on the street side of the Music Building is a concert hall for jazz and improvised music. When you cross the IJ with the Ferry (Pont) from the back of the railway station, you get to another striking building: the Netherlands EYE Film Institute. The collection of the EYE comprises the complete film history.
• Visit the permanent showing in the basement of the EYE Film Institute Nederland for free. • Pay a visit to the beautiful Maritime Museum and get on board a replica of a VOC ship. Generations of artists have borrowed motifs and compositions from Rembrandt’s prints.

14 TILL 25 SEPTEMBER 2016 As a tribute to Toer van Schayk, who will be 80 in September, Dutch National Ballet is presenting masterpieces from the repertoire of the Dutch Masters: the three ‘Vans’ In 1971, Rudi van Dantzig, who was then artistic director of Dutch National Ballet, commissioned dancer Toer van Schayk to choreograph his first work. One year later, Hans van Manen, who had been with Nederlands Dans Theater up to then, also created his first work for the company. Together, they put Dutch National Ballet on the world map in the seventies and eighties, and laid the foundations for what soon became known internationally as the ‘Dutch School’. At the same time, Toer van Schayk grew to become one of the leading set and costume designers of the Netherlands.
17 TILL 20, 30, 31 AUGUST TILL 2 SEPTEMBER Director Simon Stone mixes the tragedy by Euripides with the true story of Debora Green, a child murderess in the United States in the 1990s. The result is captivating. From beneath the surface of a story picked from a newspaper, the elusive core of the old myth emerges. Medea will be surtitled in English at the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam 17 till 20 August and 30 August till 2 September. In Stone’s version, Medea has become Anna, a successful physician who is trying to get her life back together after years of involuntary commitment. But her ex-husband has different plans. Anna is in danger of losing everything. Not just her job, but also her children. Driven into a corner, she sees only one way out.
23 - 27 AUGUST ‘A frail, gorgeous monologue – Smits is splendid – wryly charismatic, brimming with confusion and long-suppressed feeling.’ – Time Out **** The internationally acclaimed playwright Simon Stephens wrote Song from Far Away especially for actor Eelco Smits. The monologue was directed by Ivo van Hove at the Mostra International de Teatro in São Paulo in March 2015, followed by a long series of performances in Amsterdam and a tour of the Netherlands. Smits also played three weeks of sold-out performances in English at Young Vic (London). In August Song from Far Away will be back at the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, surtitled in English.
27 JULY - 7 AUGUST Fifteen young artists give the audience a performance of ninety bloodcurdling minutes that is reminiscent of the first encounter with Cirque du Soleil or The Blue Man Group. It has the same ecstasy and euphoria set in the current zeitgeist. Cirque Éloize’s iD is a brilliantly balanced mix of acrobatics, urban dance and high-tech video projections. An adrenaline rush with a twist of West Side Story-like ‘boy meets girl’ street romance. Breath taking, beautiful and simply poetic. This theater has made history of visits from many famous world circuses. A unique chance for all ages. The show has no language barrier and is suitable for tourists of all nationalities. amsterdamjournal.nl 35

Flevopark Amsterdam appelsap.net 13 AUGUST 12.00 – 23.00 HRS This is the last of four concerts on which the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, under the direction of Iván Fischer and Daniel Harding, is exploring the relationship between Bach and Brahms. The Magnificat for five-part chorus, soloists and orchestra (with timpani and trumpets) was Bach’s first major liturgical work set to a Latin text. Brahms was an active contributor to a gradually renewed interest in Bach’s œuvre by programming his works and collaborating on publications issued by the Bach Gesellschaft. This also had an impact on Brahms’s own compositions. Indeed, it was Bach who helped Brahms shake off the ‘giant’ Beethoven in his First Symphony.

Amsterdam Metropolitan Area
The AMA lies to the north of the Randstad and encompasses the city of Amsterdam and the Dutch provinces of North Holland and Flevoland. The area has a totalpopulation of over 2 million inhabitants. The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (AMA) is comprised of several surrounding municipalities, including the cities of Amsterdam, Almere, Amstelveen and Haarlemmermeer, Hilversum and Velsen. Flowers of Amsterdam: The Flower Strip is one of the most popular and unique sights in the Netherlands. Every spring the entire region bursts into vivid colour as bulbs shoot and millions of flowers blossom. One of the biggest attractions is the Keukenhof Gardens, the world’s largest flower gardens and a home to more varieties of tulip than you can imagine.
Old Holland With its countless windmills, churches and old-fashioned farmhouses, stepping out into Old Holland can feel like being in a Golden Age painting. Traditionally Dutch: Noord-Holland towns such as Marken, Volendam and Edam hark back to times of more honest crafts, show
casing the traditional skills the region was famous for: shipbuilding, fishing and cheese making. Alongside such classic industries, you can also experience the heritage of the industrial revolution – a time when smoking chimney stacks and spinning sails enabled the mass production of chocolate and biscuits.

Castles & Gardens The countryside of Noord-Holland was always a popular region for the rich merchants of the Golden Age. Each summer they would leave their primary residence in the heart of Amsterdam, retreating to extravagant castles and estates with acres of beautifully manicured gardens. History meets nature Both north west of Amsterdam, and south east, on the banks of the River Amstel and River Vecht, you can still bike and boat past these historic houses. Some are open to the public while others leave you dreaming of an aristocratic life by the water.
New Land Although famous for its historic city centre, the Amsterdam region is always evolving as new immigrants and diverse cultures make their mark on many neighbourhoods. But probably the most dramatic changes have taken place in the province of Flevoland. Architecture & nature Just north east of Amsterdam, these polders were reclaimed from the sea, giving birth to the new cities of Almere and Lelystad. Not only are they internationally acclaimed playgrounds for architecture and design, they are also blessed with expanses of wild nature on the doorstep.
Amsterdam Beach: a must-see for every visitor of Amsterdam Zandvoort’s Bubbling Beach Zandvoort is how a beach resort should be. With hotels, cafés, restaurants, a lively boulevard, bustling shopping streets and a touch of allure! Stroll around, watch people parading the beach boulevard, shop and hop from one terrace to the next. You’ll also be surprised by the small alleyways and old buildings in the centre and round the day off with a four-course dinner in a top restaurant. Or keep things frugal by an open fire in the warmth of a beach café. This will leave you some money for the casino or for a relaxed day at one of the beauty and wellness salons. Zandvoort’s fame also stems from the racing circuit that was created in 1848 and where Formula 1 races were once held. In the summer there is something on nearly every weekend. Tip: Visit Zandvoort aan Zee by train or use your Region Day Ticket to travel to Amsterdam Beach by bus. Dutch Dunes Put on your walking shoes or hire a bike for a jaunt through Holland’s dunes. A varied nature reserve with sloping dunes, lakes, forests and rare animals like deer and wisent. The dunes contain all sorts of surprises like military bunkers and magnificent viewpoints. Don’t forget the fact that this stretch of coast is what protects the Netherlands from the sea. After all, half our country lies well below sea level! Zandvoort aan Zee is one of the most versatile resorts in the Netherlands. A great city centre surrounded by unique nature combined with a beautiful beach makes Zandvoort aan Zee a must-see for every visitor of Amsterdam.
Feel like Amsterdam Beach? = Feel like Zandvoort! 44 amsterdamjournal.nl

DISC OVER HAARLEM
There is much happening in Haarlem, all year round. Discover the city known for its high-quality cultural offering, wide range of shops, cosy restaurants and cafés, and excellent location near Amsterdam, beach and sea. A city with a rich history, stunning monuments and bon-vivant atmosphere. The ideal destination for a day out or a weekend away.
Wayward exhibition on “De Maakbare Mens” (Manmade Man) in the Dolhuys Museum Schotersingel 2 | 2021 GE Haarlem info@hetdolhuys.nl | www.hetdolhuys.nl Ever met a perfect person? So… how was it? The Dolhuys, museum of the mind, presents their new exhibition “De Maakbare Mens” (Manmade Man’) with this slogan. The museum puts artificiality up for discussion in a unique way. The jubilee exhibition is designed by design agency Kossmann.dejong and can be seen until the end of 2016. Many Dutch people want to be perfect nowadays. We strive for a healthy spirit, impeccable behavior and a perfect body. We collectively post an ideal image of ourselves on Facebook every day, but can we always continue to meet these high standards? People who cannot, are excluded. The “imperfect” do not belong, are insane, limited, scary, pathetic or unwell. But to be truly successful, think of artists and scientists, should you not deviate from the norm?
The visitor comes face-to-face with their own “artificiality” with a selfie. They will meet a wide range of special minds, including the successful writer Myrthe van der Meer, the artists Edvard Munch, Vincent van Gogh, Willem van Genk and Anton Heijboer. On the basis of works of art, films and photography the audience will get a glimpse into their mind. In an audiovisual presentation based on quotes from letters of Munch and Van Gogh and visual clips of their work, both artists talk about the link between their mental illness and their artistry. Van Gogh spent some time in a psychiatric facility. Munch did not think of himself as ill, but saw his fear as the basis for his art.
Opening hours:
Tuesday to Friday: 10 am – 5 pm Saturdays, Sunday and Bank Holidays: 12 noon – 5 pm Closed on: 1 January, 27 April and 25 December

In the early seventeenth century painting underwent a radical change, and the foundations for this were laid in Haarlem. The Frans Hals Museum’s collection, which encompasses the entire spectrum of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century painting, reflects this revolutionary change.
It is Nikkie Plessen’s eye for detail which makes every NIKKIE collection strong, elegant and distinctly Dutch. Nikkie started designing a small fashion collection that reflected her personal feminine, sexy and edgy style. Right now NIKKIE is distributed and sold in over 15 countries.

Authentic Haarlem. A city of remarkable history and culture, Haarlem is just a short hop from Amsterdam but packs a unique punch. With spectacular monuments dating back almost 800 years, such as the Amsterdamse Poort and Sint-Bavokerk, it’s no wonder that so many great artists of the Golden Age wanted to capture its beauty and atmosphere.
You will not find any chain stores here.
Frans Hals, one of the Netherlands’ greatest painters, is celebrated in theFrans Hals Museum (alongside paintings by his peers). Of course, Haarlem has made an impact in more recent times too. Its Jugendstil train station is one of the most beautiful in the country and the city is a bustling hub of great cafés, shops and restaurants. Tulpomania Experience Haarlem Inspired by the tulip mania that swept through Holland during the Dutch Golden Age, Haarlem Marketing has entered into a unique collaboration with Keukenhof, the Frans Hals Museum and the Jopen beer brewery.
These four partners join forces to bring you the Tulip Mania experience tour, which tells visitors the fascinating story of the tulip mania that reached a fever pitch in the Golden Age. In Haarlem, the centre of the tulip trade, tulips were extremely popular in the 17th century. Their prices soared to spectacular heights and bulbs became the object of unprecedented speculation. As a result, some people made great profits whereas others experienced enormous losses. • • •
A visit to the Jopen beer brewery walking tour through Haarlem’s inner city bring the Dutch Golden Age back to life. In both the Frans Hals Museum and Keukenhof the visitors are treated to beautiful fresh flowers in addition to presentations on the 17th century tulip mania, the fascinating story of the speculative tulip trade.
Tulip Mania In early 17th century Holland, tulips were an exclusive and particularly rare status symbol. The slow increase in the number of tulip bulbs relative to the great demand created a wild speculation in bulbs, a ‘tulip craze’ that saw prices explode to tens of thousands of euros per bulb. For the same amount you could have purchased an entire canal house. This speculative bubble burst abruptly, but the tulip trade survived. More information: tulpomania.com

ZAANSE SCHANS With its traditional green painted houses, warehouses and windmills the Zaanse Schans gives the feeling of having stepped back into the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries. Most of the buildings were relocated from other areas in the Zaanstreek in the 1960’s and 70’s as owing to urban development they were under threat of obliteration.
The Zaanse Schans offers a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape as it was before and after the industrial revolution. However this is not an open air museum but a colourful living and working neighbourhood. Most of the buildings were re-located from other areas in the Zaanstreek in the 1960’s and 70’s as owing to urban development they were under threat of obliteration. This panorama makes the Zaanse Schans a vital link in the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

Volendam is the most remarkable picturesque fishing village just some 10-15 miles from Amsterdam. It dates from the era when the, now lake, IJsselmeer still was a part of the North Sea. In Volendam, if you’re lucky, you will see people in traditional costumes. As a result of its insulated location, the village preserved its character for six centuries, also because of the tough vitality of the fishermen. The characteristic small houses, which together with the canals and the drawbridges form the most picturesque spots, present the visitor an atmosphere of geniality and romance. History and Fame The name Volendam stems from Vol-entdam, which means as much as the finishing of a dam. Volendam is located on the site of the former (way back in 1357) harbour of the historic city of Edam. As Edam started a new harbour, the old one formed a new settlement, and got the name Volendam. The population of the town grew only very slowly during those first centuries of its existence. In 1462 it only had 25 inhabitants, whereas today some 19,000. Around 1875, Volendam became known as a town worth visiting by tourists, and was thusly immortalized by writers and artists. Volendam became written about both nationally and internatio-nally, and magazines published

photographs of stalwart fishermen by the harbour, of the women in their graceful traditional dress and of children playing in front of picturesque houses. The rich and famous flocked to this humble fishing town, where it seemed as if time had stood still. Volendam became an artist’s paradise, with people in graceful traditional costumes, the wooden little houses built closely together against, protected from the sea by the sturdy dike; their interiors replete with statuettes of saints and the harbour crowded with hundreds of red-sailed ‘botters’ (fishing boats). Some elements of this are now of the past (the herring fishery was finished when the sea was closed off), but

Origin of Traditional Quality
Excellence on the IJsselmeer a benchmark for Volendam’s tradition and quality Paviljoen Smit-Bokkum is the home of an eel smoke-house since 1856, where the 5th generation of the Smit-Bokkum family daily smokes Holland’s best fish, preserving the ancient family recipe. The Smit-Bokkum family restaurant next to the smokehouse serves home-smoked delicacies together with a selection of local traditional menus. Especially the famous home-smoked IJsselmeer eels daily draws a client base from all over the country. Smit-Bokkum’s lovely terrace offers seats for over 100 guests. Seated here you can take in the magnificent views of the IJsselmeer and the Marinapark harbour. TIP: A dinner or lunch at Smit-Bokkum can also be combined with a guided tour through the smoke-house and a visit to the Palingsoundmuseum above the restaurant.

if you are curious about how the Volendam costume was worn and what the interiors of the houses looked like, do visit the Volendammer Museum to experience a little of the Volendam of yesteryear. The Costume The costumes of Volendam are world-renowned. Around the entire world you can see portraits of people who have had themselves photographed in Volendam costume at the time of their visit to the place. The most famous part of the Dutch costume is of course the wooden shoes or “clogs”. The clog has gone a little bit out of fashion these days, but you can still occasionally see people walk around on them. Getting There There are several ways to visit the town. Probably the easiest way will be the booking of a daytrip by a tour operator. Each one of these places has its own charm and a cultural and historical background that makes a visit very worth while. Enjoy the well-maintained monuments that adorn the old cityscapes and village views. Nearly half of the entire surface area of Waterland consists of water (no less than 5000 hectares). The municipality thus provides considerable opportunities for water recreation; sailing on the Markermeer or IJsselmeer lakes and having a drink at one of the outdoor cafes in one of the picturesque villages or cities. If you would like to explore Waterland by boat, consider a whispering boat, motorboat, rowing boat or canoe. Explore the best of Waterland on the water, between the reeds, with a gentle breeze for company. Waterland is also pre-eminently suitable for walking tours and bicycle rides. The decor consists of open grass polders, peat rivers and ribbon development villages with colourful woorden houses and traditional Dutch farmhouses built in the shape of pyramids. Food
DRINKS Whatever your taste is, NIGHTLIFE Amsterdam has it.
Amsterdam has all the nightlife you would expect. There are intimate restaurants, bars with or without live music, hip dance clubs, comedy clubs, and a casino. A complete list would fill a whole book, so we can only give you some recommendations here.
restaurants | cafés As one might expect from a cosmopolitan city, Amsterdam not only offers the possibility of enjoying classical French cuisine, but since a few decades the city has also abounded in - sometimes surprisingly good - Greek, Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese, Korean and even Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants. This fact has caused the extensive, daily public market in Albert Cuypstraat to adapt its range to the purchasing requirements of these restaurants. For a quick cheap lunchtime bite try the sandwich shops, the chips stands or herring stalls. Eating maatjes (‘mates’) herring is quite possibly the only important culinary tradition of our otherwise in this respect poorly endowed country. Amsterdam is also a city with many bars and cafés, some 1,500 in all. Each of the areas mentioned below has something to offer, from friendly and relaxed brown cafés, stylish grand cafés to crowded designer bars. The cafés and bars vary greatly and have their own special attraction: a wide range of beers, jenever (Dutch gin), live music, canal-side terraces, board games, pool tables or just good old fun.
bars | live music Amsterdam has some great small bars where you enter for free and or a small fee to listen to live music. Singer-songwriters, jazz, pop, folk or even classical music. You just have to know where to go.
cocktails | dinner The Venice of the North, Amsterdam’s attractions are considerable. Besides the famed red-light areas where window-shopping takes on a whole new meaning and the coffee bars that are more popular for their other wares, Amsterdam is also home to hundreds of great bars and clubs: style bars, cocktail bars, bistros, restaurants and casinos, and the famous brown cafes where you can linger long over a beer and watch the people of Amsterdam go about their business. Once you’ve visited the museum quarter and taken a tour of the canals, you can hit the town. A night out in the many bars of Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein should see you into the small hours.

De Bazaar in Beverwijk takes you on a
CULINARY TRIP AROUND THE WORLD A culinary trip around the world with De Bazaar in Beverwijk. From bottomless bowls full of olives and herbs to unique snacks. From Thai basil to Pom rolls. A true foodie paradise! Four women roll out dough on a round baking sheet in one fluid motion. The “pancakes” are then stuffed with spinach, chicken, minced beef, potato or cheese. Then they are folded and turned over, creating a Gözleme, a traditional Turkish dish. And everything is made fresh at the stall. From Amsterdam café to souk At De Bazaar in Beverwijk you suddenly imagine yourself on a trip to the Middle and Far East. The scent of herbs that wafts across the Kruidenplein of the Oosterse Markt (Eastern Market) is reminiscent of Moroccan souks. The stalls display dozens of varieties of olives, wine leaves stuffed with rice, date bread and couscous salad. The scents and colours inundate the senses, and you literally see all kinds of people: foodies, hipsters, families, everyone comes here. And the market sellers are happy for you to have a taste of anything! Opposite the Oosterse Market you will find the Food Court. Long rows of tables and chairs with numerous eateries. Chinese food, Burgers & Wings, Surinamese food and Afghan food. The owners are proud and happy to explain their dishes.
You can also buy Lebanese baklava, which is a lot less sweet than Turkish baklava and has delicious pieces of nut in it. On the Zwarte Markt (Black Market) you will find food that is more European. Spanish churros, Italian sausages, smoked eel, Dutch poffertjes (mini pancakes) and Flemish fries. And for Asian cuisine you can visit the Amazing Oriental supermarket where you can truly find everything you could wish for. You are bound to go home with your bags filled to the brim. Colourful market De Bazaar began as Zwarte Markt (Black Market) in 1980 and grew into a market that offers a huge variety of products. In addition to food, you will also find barbers, hairdressers, a car boot market and accessories. For gold jewellery, visit Goudsouk. 18 jewellers under one roof full of twinkling lights. It is the world’s second largest gold souk. In Hal 21, the fashion-conscious can wander amongst racks full of designer clothes and accessories with 20 to 80% off, including Versace and Guess, or they can have a look at other clothing shops. With clothes and accessories displayed over 3200 m² of floor space, there truly is something for everyone.
