The Holland Festival, since 1947 the leading international performing arts festival in the Netherlands, offers a mix of performances and concerts from all corners of the world. It features established names as well as new talent, showing innovation in art and exploring new types of venue and forms of theatre. Amsterdam Journal selected some interesting performances of this year’s edition.

METROPOLE ORKEST & SOLOISTS OF THE SYRIAN BIG BAND Kinan Azmeh, Ibrahim Keivo a.o. Special guest: Eric Vloeimans 8 – 9 June, Royal Theatre Theater Carré The Syrian Big Band was the first of its kind in the Arab world and gave big band a voice in Syria. Working with the Dutch Metropole Orkest, soloists of the Syrian Big Band – most of them now live in the West – are playing a festive programme, packed with traditional repertoire and own energetic work. ANNA KARENINA ... Clemens Sienknecht, Barbara Bürk, Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg 8 – 10 June, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam The German Bürk and Sienknecht are famous for

4 amsterdamjournal.nl

their clever, comic theatre adaptations of literary classics. Now Leo Tolstoy’s monumental 19th century novel has been recast as a sparkling 1970s and 1980s radio show. Listen to music by Grandmaster Flash, the Eurythmics and the Steve Miller Band, and see how love ruins Anna Karenina. END CREDITS Steve Mcqueen 9 – 29 June, Loods 6 British visual artist Steve McQueen (Oscar winner for 12 Years a Slave) presents the latest version of End Credits. This video installation is about Paul Robeson (1898-1976), a celebrated AfricanAmerican singer and actor who became a great civil rights activist, who was prosecuted by the FBI in the McCarthy era.

STADIUM Mohamed El Khatib 16 – 17 June, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam French playwright and director Mohamed El Khatib found 53 supporters of Racing Club de Lens football club for a theatre performance about their lives. On stage, the group gathers around a chip shop for a series of personal stories and scenes. El Khatib unravels the myths about the alleged differences between football and theatre fans. DER MÜDE TOD Fritz Lang, George Benjamin 16 June, Pathé Tuschinski Fritz Lang’s expressionist and romantic silent film classic, Der müde Tod (1921) is accompanied live by George Benjamin on the piano.

The Pathé Tuschinski cinema, which opened in 1921, is the perfect place to see the creative process of one of the greatest composers of our age in action. OCTAVIA E. BUTLER’S PARABLE OF THE SOWER Toshi Reagon, Bernice Johnson Reagon 20 -21 June, Muziekgebouw Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower is postapocalyptic music theatre that draws on two hundred years of Black music. Based on Octavia Butler’s novel Parable of the Sower, the piece blends elements of science fiction and African American spiritualism, race, gender and the future of humanity.

CROWD Gisèle Vienne 27 – 28 juni, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam The time and space mix up in Vienne’s choreography, referring to early 90s rave, is playing with strong time distortions and perceptions in various ways. The soundtrack is a collage by Peter Rehberg, covering thirty years of electronic music history. HOLLAND FESTIVAL PROMS 23 June, Het Concertgebouw Five concerts, from classical to pop, in one day at the Concertgebouw, for only € 11 per concert. This year’s edition includes Tribute to Blackstar, an homage to David Bowie last album with singers

Anna Calvi, Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab) and Anja Plaschg (Soap&Skin) and the musical collective stargaze. And in Jalasat Rouhiya, the mystical, spiritual sound of a hadra session (Sufi ritual) is infused with the rousing rhythms of an AraboAndalusian orchestra.

City of Amsterdam Where to begin? That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you the Amsterdam Journal has divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. Each area has its own character. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown (referring to the dark wood interiors) pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands (Museumkwartier – Museum Quarter), large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops (Centrum (Centre), de Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets)) or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)

JORDAAN AUTHENTIC WORKING CLASS AREA You can wander around through the streets and side streets in a relaxed way and enjoy the spontaneous and relaxed atmosphere. You can experience the typical atmosphere of the Jordaan, in streets like Westerstraat, Tweede Anjeliersdwarsstraat, Tweede Tuindwarsstraat and around the Noordermarkt. On Saturdays you will find the best organic farmer’s market of Amsterdam on the Noordermarkt, directly opposite the Noorderkerk (Noorder church).

PUBS/BARS AND SHOPS When you walk from the Noorderkerk (Northern church) to the Westerkerk (Western church) – the recognizable church that has a blue-red crown on its tower – you will automatically get to the Westermarkt. Here you will find the monument for gay people (1987), consisting of three large pink granite triangles. From here you can go straight onto Rozengracht (Rozen canal). This shopping street is very well-liked because of its diversity of nice shops.

ANNE FRANK HOUSE Also not far from the Westerkerk, you can take a look in Anne Frank’s Achterhuis. Behind a closet that turns out to be a door, you will find the small house where she wrote in her diary. Very impressive.

THE REAL PUB LIFE ‘Gezellig’. This Dutch word – that can barely be translated properly – applies perfectly to the typical (brown) pubs in the Jordaan. The atmosphere is easy-going, the people are spontaneous and speak with a very broad Amsterdam accent. You will regularly hear the sound of original Dutch music. ■

Tip s Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. In the past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot!

10 amsterdamjournal.nl

• Do you want to visit the Anne Frank House (Prinsengracht 267)? Be there on time and prepare for serious waiting times; • Find Dutch conviviality in one of the over 60 (brown) cafés in the Jordaan; • Visit the Lapjesmarkt (fabric market) at the Noordermarkt: Mondays 08:00 - 14:00; •

Feel like going on a shopping spree? At the edge of the Jordaan you will find the Haarlemmerstraat and the Haarlemmerdijk with many contemporary and unique and edgy clothes shops.

KEREN DE VREEDE

MODERN ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM Keren de Vreede Art Gallery brings color and joy to the Jordaan area. With it’s magnificent works of art is definitely worth a visit. Keren de Vreede paints with merely her hands and lives her art. Bright colours, thick paint and bold and daring lines are the characteristics of her paintings. They reflect her passion for life, her positive outlook and her bright personality. A selftaught artist who discovered the desire tot paint in her early years. Having used all kind of materials in the past, she prefers acrylic paint to express her creativity and achieve the result she is looking for. Instead of using the traditional easel, she positions her canvas on the floor. Her style can be described as modern abstract expressionism. Her paintings have been bought by art lovers and collectors from all over the world. When visiting Amsterdam, weave you way down the Prinsengracht, and make sure you visit Keren de Vreede’s Art Gallery, where the local artist is happy to chat about her textural floral canvases. Her paintings are not only very beautiful, they are also truly exceptional. Every painting is unique and impossible te replicate, even by Keren herself. 2 THE NINE STREETS

Not far behind Dam Square, between the wellknown ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. PLEASANT, UNIQUE AND BOLD In former times the workshops of craftsmen could be found in Reestraat, Berenstraat, Runstraat, Hartenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Huidenstraat, Gasthuismolensteeg, Oude Spiegelstraat and Wijde Heisteeg. Nowadays the small streets are full of specialist shops. If you want to snap up something special, you are bound to be successful here. Contrary to the large shops in the city centre, nothing is standard here. Except the more easy-going atmosphere and the great amount of creativity.

VINTAGE, CHIC, SECOND-HAND AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN

Nine small streets full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries.

The collections of the shops show that the owners are passionate enthusiasts. Many of them have made their hobby their job. If you love clothes with just something special, you can indulge yourself in the more than fifty clothes shops. No sameness here, but mainly colourful, chic, trendy, exciting, vintage or second-hand clothes. The second-hand shops in the Nine Streets are famous for vintage, chic and second-hand clothes in Amsterdam by the way.

UNLIKE ANYTHING ELSE All the shops really show sincere interests: shoe shops with unusual collections, a sock shop for men, specialised bookshops, a cheese shop with hundreds of different types of cheeses and have you ever seen a White Teeth shop before? ■

Tip s

• On de9straatjes.nl/uk/ you can see the amount of specialised shops; • Most shops in the Nine Streets are also open on Sundays, after 12:00; • There are various small cafés in the Nine Streets that sell healthy sandwiches, smoothies, cheesecake and other goodies.

MUSEUM QUARTER

See the masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with your own eyes.

There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes. Where to begin? RIJKSMUSEUM (NATIONAL MUSEUM) In this impressive monumental building dating from 1885 you will find the famous masterpieces of Dutch and Flemish painters from the fifteenth up to and including the nineteenth century. Here you will also find Rembrandt’s world-famous Night Watch (1650). Other masters to be found here are Jan Steen, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer. After a long renovation project the Rijksmuseum is completely open again.

VAN GOGH MUSEUM When you walk through this museum you clearly see how this painter developed. As sombre as the paintings are that he made in the Netherlands, so colourful and vivid are the works that he made on French soil. You will also find works of contemporaries like Monet and Gauguin in the museum.

STEDELIJK MUSEUM (MUNICIPAL MUSEUM) The Stedelijk Museum, established in 1874, has a large collection of classical, modern and contemporary art. The museum owns about 90.000 objects from practically all important 20th and 21st century schools.

CONCERTGEBOUW (CONCERT HALL) In 1888 the first concert took place in the famous Concert Hall. The acoustics in the building are extraordinary. In 2013 the Concertgebouw was celebrating its 125th anniversary. Every month of the Jubilee year a different period from the history of the Concertgebouw is central.

OLD TOWN

Visit the oldest streets of Amsterdam.

Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. Although not appreciated by everyone, a tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. Close to the Central Station you will find one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam: the Zeedijk. The place is swarming with restaurants, cafés and Indonesian shops (tokos). The Zeedijk is the centre of China Town; the Peking ducks hang behind the windows and a large Buddhist temple colours the street scene. From midday you will increasingly smell aromas that make your mouth water. Pull up a chair in one of the smaller Chinese restaurants. This is where Chinese Amsterdammers (or Amsterdam Chinese) eat too. Is there a line somewhere? Then the wait is very probably highly worthwhile!

RED LIGHT DISTRICT The Red Light district covers the area between Zeedijk and Warmoesstraat. As soon as dusk falls and the shining red light greets you, the atmosphere is loose and laid back here. The ladies behind the windows wink playfully, are friendly and wave to the merry passers-by. Do you want to get your breath back for a moment from all the impressions? There are plenty of pubs to recover while enjoying a beer.

OUDE KERKSPLEIN (OLD CHURCH SQUARE)

Tip s

• If you don’t like waiting, you just order your Museum tickets online; •

During the concert season (mid-September to the end of June) a free lunch concert is given in the Concertgebouw on Wednesdays: between 12.00 and 12.30 hours;

• High Society shopping: parallel to Museumplein you will find the most stylish and most expensive shopping street of the Netherlands: P.C. Hooftstraat; • Diamond lovers visit the Diamond Museum Amsterdam (Paulus Potterstraat, opposite Museumplein).

16 amsterdamjournal.nl

The Oude Kerksplein is special place in the heart of the Red Light district. The 14th century church is the oldest building still standing in Amsterdam. There’s a bronze statue on the square in honour of the prostitutes who have been active in this area for centuries. This lady is called ‘Belle’.

CANNABIS COLLEGE AMSTERDAM The Cannabis College offers free advice on safe recreational Cannabis use in addition to educating the public about the many uses of the hemp plant. Guided tours of the Cannabis garden allow to bring the information to life with a beautiful, completely bio-organic example of indoor growing. ■

The major store chains are all represented here.

A five-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, you will get to Dam Square. Here you will find the Palace and the National Monument. The large dove population and street artists also attract the attention. From Dam Square you walk straight into the Walhalla for shopping fanatics. The major store chains are all represented here. KALVERSTRAAT AND SPUI Everyone in the Netherlands knows this shopping street, Kalverstraat. It is about one kilometre long and has 15 side streets and alleys. Halfway through Kalverstraat you can walk onto one of Amsterdam’s most beautiful small squares: Spui. You will find a second-hand book market here every Friday. On Saturdays there is an art market.

ROYAL PALACE AND NATIONAL MONUMENT For those who don’t just want to pass Dam Square: the Palace on Dam Square is open for visitors a large part of the year. A major part of the art collection of the Oranje-Nassau royal family can be seen in the rooms. The National Monument opposite the Palace is the most important monument in the Netherlands in commemoration of World War II.

ROKIN On Rokin, which runs parallel to Kalverstraat, you will find specialist shops, among which Gassan Diamonds and Tobacco shop Hajenius. This shop has been purveyor of tobacco to many European Royal households since 1826 already.

AMSTERDAM MUSEUM, BEGIJNHOF

Tip s •

The Bijenkorf, literally a ‘beehive’, on Dam Square is already an attraction in itself. Here you can find about all imaginable clothing and other articles of all conceivable brands;

• Are you standing on Spui? Walk into Voetboogstraat and join the queue for Vleminckx. This chip shop owner does not have a first-rate reputation for nothing; • Don’t pass Warmoesstraat and admire creative rubber in the world’s first condom emporium the Condomerie and have the best chocolate drink in Metropolitan; • You will find Dutch and international celebrities at Madame Tussauds, the waxworks museum on Dam Square.

18 amsterdamjournal.nl

Just behind the bustling Kalverstraat you will find the Museum that specialises in the history of Amsterdam (entrances: Kalverstraat 92 and Sint Luciënsteeg 27). The Begijnhof (Beguinage, entrance at Spui) is an old court of almshouses with 49 houses dating from different time periods. ■

ARTIST MARK RAVEN Text: Sarah Saarberg

and his Contemporary City Impressions

It is obvious that the artist Mark Raven loves his birthplace by each and every work he has made of Amsterdam. This city never ceases to captivate and inspire him. Mark’s work is modern and wayward, but is unmistakably connected to this versatile and interesting capitol of ours. If Marks Raven’s father had had his way, Mark would have become a journalist. At the time, he followed his advice and went to the school for journalism. But he clearly was destined for other things. The artist explains his chosen medium: “The image, as means of communication, is far more appealing to me than text. Moreover, an image is universal. Everyone understands it.” And so, Mark installed himself as a street artist on a rug in the tunnel underneath the Rijksmuseum to capture the city in every way. “I love the city. But I love people too. I immediately want to show them what I make.”

KIOSK ON MUSEUMPLEIN Mark’s work was liked right from the beginning. So much even, that the city council helped him to a studio right on the Museumplein in the form of a rebuild flower stall. Mark wanted his art to be accessible for everyone, and so he began to print tshirts and posters with his work. “I would like it if everyone could enjoy my view of Amsterdam,” he simply says.

M.C. Escher’s graphic work, but gradually generated his modern touch. Mark combines traditional etching techniques with painting and modern graphic and digital techniques. All in a style that appeals to a lot of people. And not just tourists. Many Amsterdammers have a Mark Raven hanging on their wall.

ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERY BUDGET Nowadays, Mark Raven is located at the renowned shoppingstreet of Amsterdam the “Leidsestraat” near the “Leidseplein” and he has a gallery slash shop on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, a fabulous location right behind Dam square next to Magna Plaza. On the ground floor you can buy t-shirts, posters, postcards and other articles, all with the recognizable Mark Raven art. Upstairs, you can find original prints, some printed in a limited edition, others not. This is for the reason that, despite his enormous success, Mark Raven wants to be attainable for every budget. “My boxes with coasters are very popular with backpackers. I like that: in this way, my view on Amsterdam will spread all around the world.”

Eating, drinking and dancing

Eating, drinking and dancing you do around Rembrandtplein (Rembrandt Square). All year around this is the place to be for dazzling nightlife and in summer the outdoor cafés are crowded. There’s also enough to see and do in the area for people who enjoy the good life. REGULIERSDWARSSTRAAT: GAY AND TRENDY A pub-crawl from Rembrandtplein will certainly also take you to Reguliersdwarsstraat. Here you will find the city’s most trendy gay entertainment places. The biggest and most famous of these are in the western part of the street, at the side of Koningsplein (King Square). Every café, every bar and every club has its own ambiance. Thorbeckeplein (Thorbecke Square) which is at a right angle to Rembrandtplein is teeming with restaurants and cafés too.

TUSCHINSKI CINEMA Within one hundred metres of Rembrandtplein, in Reguliersbreestraat, you will find the most beautiful cinema of the Netherlands since 1921: Tuschinski.

HEINEKEN BREWERY For everyone who likes to drink beer, a visit to the Heineken Brewery really is a must. In the former brewery at Stadhouderskade, which is a fifteen minute walk from Rembrandtplein, you will make an interactive trip through the world of Heineken with the Heineken Experience.

SHOPPING IN THE UTRECHTSESTRAAT When you go to the Heineken Brewery from Rembrandtplein you can walk there via Reguliersgracht, but you can also take Utrechtsestraat (Utrecht Street). The specialist shops for clothing, books, design furniture and music will certainly make the small detour worth your while. The Utrechtsestraat is typically one of those Amsterdam streets with tasteful, unique and quirky shops. ■

Tip s

• Catch a movie at Pathé Tuschinki, if only to be able to admire this beautiful cinema from inside (Reguliersbreestraat); • Music lovers go to Concerto: the largest alternatieve CD shop. Five buildings full of music in each conceivable genre (Utrechtsestraat); • The pleasant neighbourhood behind Marie Heineken Square is called the Pijp. You will find the well-known Albert Cuyp market here; • On Vijzelstraat you will find the City Archives: The Bazel. The inside of this monumental, art-deco style building is even more eye-catching than the outside of the building.

THE DOCKLANDS In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN DESIGN Present and past have been brought together in the architecture and the urban design of the Docklands. The harbour feeling is still alive, but old warehouses have been given new functions and the diverging designs of various artists link up with each other perfectly. Admire the special houses on KNSM island, walk across the whole Java Island via the pedestrian bridges and take a look at the Whale (or Sphinx) on Sporenbrug on Borneo Island. IJburg is absolutely worth a visit for architectural buffs. The urban design scheme here is based on the ‘collage city concept’. The island consists of 8 neighbourhoods, each of which has its own individual character.

The architecture of Amsterdam in the future.

GOING OUT AND MUSIC The Docklands attract many artistic people, so it comes as no surprise that when it comes to culture and going out there is plenty to do here. It’s mainly about contemporary classical music in the Music Building (Muziekgebouw) on IJ lake (a ten-minute walk from the back of the Central Station). The Bimhuis (Bim house), that protrudes on the street side of the Music Building, is a concert hall for jazz and improvised music. When you cross the IJ with the pont (ferry) from the back of the railway station, you get to another striking building: The Netherlands EYE Film Institute. The collection of the EYE comprises the complete film history. ■

Tip s

• Take a guided walk (also in English) on the Eastern Docklands; • Visit the permanent showing in the basement of the EYE Film Institute for free; • Pay a visit to the beautiful Maritime Museum and get on board a replica of a VOC ship (Kattenburgerplein 1); • Enjoy the sun on the roof terrace of the Nemo Science Centre (free of charge) or be surprised in this museum about technology and science. The Nemo Science Centre is equally interesting and fun for adults as it is for children.

GELDERLAND

GRENSLAND

A JOURNEY THROUGH FOUR CENTURIES OF BOUNDLESS LANDSCAPE IN CODA MUSEUM APELDOORN Over the centuries, the borders of the province of Gelderland changed regularly due to political disputes and clanging of arms. Meanwhile, Dutch landscape painting was influenced by ever-changing aesthetic ideals and art movements. But the diversity of Gelderland has always fascinated and inspired artists. If it wasn’t the noble history of the old duchy, it was the variety of the natural scenery that drew artists to the province. From 17 June to 23 September inclusive, CODA Museum presents Gelderland Grensland (Gelderland Borderland), an exhibition that ties in with the heritage festival ‘Over Grenzen van Gelderland’ (About Borders of Gelderland). This exhibition brings together landscape painting and drawing from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. The perfect opportunity to travel through the province of Gelderland along masterpieces from four centuries of art history!

Jacob Cremer, Boslandschap met reizigers, 1849, Collectie Rijksmuseum Amsterdam

The works in Gelderland Grensland are fixed testimonies of political and artistic developments that each show the beauty of Gelderland’s landscape and borders in different ways. The exhibition offers a wide and continuous view on the province and the scenic inspiration that Gelderland has provided to artists throughout the centuries. Seventeenth-century masters like Jan van Goyen, Jacob van Ruisdael and Meindert Hobbema travelled to the east of the Netherlands to paint the unspoilt landscape that was becoming harder to find in urbanising Holland. A century later, Gelderland’s natural beauty could still be seen in the large wallpaper paintings and gouaches and watercolours that were collected in encyclopaedic atlases. Dutch landscape painting had its heyday in the nineteenth century, thanks to painters who lived in Gelderland or who

moved to places like Oosterbeek – the first artists’ colony in the Netherlands. The works of artists like Johannes Warnardus Bilders, Frederik Hendrik Hendriks, Jacob Cremer, Willem Roelofs and brothers Maris and Anton Mauve show the development from powerful Romanticism and religious perception of the landscape to the later, impressionistic depiction of nature. The twentieth-century painters are innovative in their representation of the province’s landscape on canvas. Leading De Stijl artists Piet Mondriaan and Vilmos Huszár, for instance, are inextricably linked to the province of Gelderland. Gelderland Grensland ties in with the heritage festival ‘Over Grenzen van Gelderland’ and is the realisation of professor and art historian Henk van Os’ wish to follow up De ontdekking van Neder-

land (2008, CODA Museum) with a second exhibition featuring art from or about Gelderland. CODA Museum was able to realise this unique exhibition thanks to generous loans from Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Museum het Valkhof, Panorama Mesdag, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum Zutphen and several private collectors. A special feature is the large number of loans from Museum Arnhem that, during its closure for renovation, keeps an important part of the collection visible and accessible this way. During the staging of Gelderland Grensland, CODA Museum _ in collaboration with Stedelijk Museum Zutphen, Voerman Museum in Hattem, Villa Mondriaan in Winterswijk and Noord Veluws Museum Nunspeet _ presents a programme that allows the inhabitants of Gelderland and tourists to travel through the province and the history of its painting. Gelderland Grensland was made possible by financial contributions from the Province of Gelderland, the Prins Bernard Cultuurfonds, and includes works by Jan van Goyen, Barent Avercamp, Joris van der Haagen, Isaak Ouwater, Jan de Beijer, Jacob van Strij, Johannes Warnardus Bilders, Jacob Cremer, Matthijs Maris, Anton Mauve, Sientje Mesdag, Jan Mankes, Jan Voerman and Willem den Ouden.

THIS SEASON IN ....

Amsterdam

You can plan what you want to see and experience as long as twelve months ahead!

What’s the best time of the year to visit Amsterdam? That depends on what you’re looking for. Springtime is bright and colourful in Amsterdam. In summer it buzzes with all sorts of outdoor activities and festivals. In autumn and winter, as the leaves are blown of the trees, Amsterdams beautiful gables reappear from behind the foliage in their full glory. When the evening sun sets in, you can enjoy the wonderfully illuminated canal houses and bridges. It’s Spring now and although it can be a bit nippy, we’re all hoping for sunshine and warmth. Then, Amsterdam looks fresh with new green foliage on the trees and blooming tulips and other flowers in the parks. And with the improving weather in come the opportunities of enjoying sitting on a café terrace, have a nice drink, something to eat and just watch people passing by. A day to mark is in your diary with big orange letters, when you are here of course, is 27 April, King’s day, when the whole town turns into one big orange party. The theatres and concert halls fire on all cylinders now, with beautiful operas, musicals and dance shows. The many museums of Amsterdam still bring toplevel exhibitions during the Spring. Visit the masterpieces like Rembrandt’ s Night Watch at the Rijksmuseum. And then, there are thousands other things to do in Amsterdam this spring. To name but a few...see this season on the next pages 28 till 36.

In this third dialogue of the cycle, the artworks surprise as they stand forth in their literalness and as they deftly disrupt our sense of the privileged historical backdrop at TMH. In attesting to sculpture’s generative vocabulary, Boris Chouvellon and Mengzhi Zheng flesh out the theme of the TMH program: how do young artists inscribe themselves in the history of an art medium? Their work is sculptural and blurs the distinction between image and construct. They draw attention to a play on objectivity, to the cognitive tension between a sculptor’s art and the socially engaged image making that we attribute to photography.

Thomas Albdorf combines classic photographic genres with modern visual techniques. His landscapes and still-lifes are boldly aesthetical, but his use of the photographic medium highly conceptual. Using both analogue and digital techniques, Albdorf edits photographs of perennial visual clichés found photos to image recognition software and automatic image generation. The resulting image is recognisable and surrealistic at the same time. It’s his way of interrogating stereotypes in our digital visual culture. Foam presents the first solo exhibition of Albdorf’s work, who also created new work especially for this exhibition. This will be displayed for the very first time.

‘Kwab’ in Dutch and ‘auricular’ or ‘lobate’ in English – is a mysterious and spooky ornament, a kind of rococo avant-la-lettre. It was invented and developed by a small number of Dutch silversmiths: Paulus van Vianen (working at the Court of Rudolf II in Prague), his brother Adam (goldsmith in Utrecht) and Johannes Lutma in Amsterdam. Their masterpieces were admired as high art, among others by Rembrandt and his pupils, who made drawings in the same style themselves. Abstract, soft, eerie shapes suggestive of monsters, masks and shells. The Dutch inventions had huge influence in England, Germany and France.

In 2018, the Rijksmuseum presents its sixth annual outdoor sculpture exhibition in the gardens, showing a selection of the monumental sculptures of the Spanish-Basque artist Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002), the pioneer of forged steel sculpture. Chillida is considered as one of the masters of postwar sculpture and one of Spain’s most important artists of his generation. In this exhibition, ten of his sculptures from, amongst others, MACBA in Barcelona, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the Eduardo Chillida-Pilar Belzunce Foundation and Ordovas Art, are brought together for the first time in The Netherlands.

This summer, the Old Church presents the newest, monumental work by Giorgio Andreotta Calo (Venice, 1979). This artist develops his work specifically for this site and produces a drastic change to the interior of the church. By placing red foil and perspex in front of the high windows, he adjusts the light and atmosphere inside. While entering the church during the summer months, you will end up in a red sea of light. A unique experience! In the evening, the light shines outwards and merges with the glow of numerous pleasure houses around. The church will amend to day and night; inside and outside go around each other, at the rhythm of the sun.

During WW II, the resistance staged a spectacular operation in Amsterdam: an attack on the Amsterdam Registry Office. As from 28 March, exactly 75 years later, you can experience it at the Dutch Resistance Museum as part of the interactive exhibition Risk of explosion!

Hermitage Amsterdam’s new exhibition, Classic Beauties, will be opened at June 16. The show tells how artists and tourists flocked to Italy, and more especially Rome, in the second half of the 18th century. From all over Europe they travelled to the Eternal City in search of inspiration and to see the newly excavated classical Greco-Roman sculptures and buildings. Their experiences prompted a new and austere kind of fashionable architecture and, in the visual arts, an unprecedentedly sensual style that sent shock waves through society: a naked, superhuman beauty more daring than anything attempted by the Greeks and Romans. Neoclassicism was born.

On 27 March 1943, a group of artists enters the Registry Office. They overpower the guards, tie them up and move them to Artis. Back inside, they place the explosives. The resistance fighters rush out of the building leaving a sign on the door: RISK OF EXPLOSION! A while later, they hear a number of loud bangs: the attack was a success.

BATAVIAWERF OOSTVAARDERSDIJK 1-9, LELYSTAD T: 3020 261409 WWW.BATAVIAWERF.NL A shipyard with extraordinary ambitions, reconstructing ships from the Golden Age that were important to the Netherlands’ maritime history. This heritage was demolished at the time because of its limited lifespan, or has sunk to the bottom of the sea. In April 1995, the Batavia, which is the most authentic reconstruction of a 17th-century VOC ship ever made, was launched after ten years in the making. The initiator was master shipbuilder Willem Vos. After this reconstruction was complete, a second project was started in the yard to reconstruct ‘De 7 Provinciën’, a 17thcentury battleship with which Michiel de Ruyter fought many sea battles. The construction of the replica of ‘De 7 Provinciën’ is one of the largest and most challenging historical shipbuilding projects in the world. Using vocational reintegration and work experience projects to construct these ships, the shipyard plays an important part in the lives of longterm unemployed people for whom, over time and for various reasons, the distance to the job market has become too great.

Amsterdam Metropolitan Area

The AMA lies to the north of the Randstad and encompasses the city of Amsterdam and the Dutch provinces of North Holland and Flevoland. The area has a totalpopulation of over 2 million inhabitants. The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (AMA) is comprised of several surrounding municipalities, including the cities of Amsterdam, Almere, Amstelveen and Haarlemmermeer, Hilversum and Velsen. FLOWERS OF AMSTERDAM:

OLD HOLLAND

The Flower Strip is one of the most popular and unique sights in the Netherlands. Every spring the entire region bursts into vivid colour as bulbs shoot and millions of flowers blossom. One of the biggest attractions is the Keukenhof Gardens, the world’s largest flower gardens and a home to more varieties of tulip than you can imagine.

With its countless windmills, churches and old-fashioned farmhouses, stepping out into Old Holland can feel like being in a Golden Age painting.

TRADITIONALLY DUTCH: Noord-Holland towns such as Marken, Volendam and Edam hark back to times of more honest crafts, show casing the

traditional skills the region was famous for: shipbuilding, fishing and cheese making. Alongside such classic industries, you can also experience the heritage of the industrial revolution – a time when smoking chimney stacks and spinning sails enabled the mass production of chocolate and biscuits.

NEW LAND

WHERE ONCE WAS ONLY WATER

The story of the province Flevoland, New Land of the Metropolitan area Amsterdam, is a unique one. The struggle with the Zuiderzee was won among other things by reclaiming over 1,800 square kilometres of land. This is how Flevoland came into being; the largest polder in the world, which lies an average five meters below sea level. Its remarkable history, the special natural areas created, modern architecture, beaches and water sports opportunities; all are ample reasons for taking a closer look at this new land. Where once was only water today is an attractive recreational area including the cities Almere and Lelystad.

CASTLES & GARDENS

HERE ARE SIX OF THE BEST THINGS TO DO AROUND THE AREA KNOWN AS CASTLES & GARDENS! 1) CYCLE ALONG THE RIVER VECHT The winding River Vecht between Amsterdam and Utrecht is a wonderful setting for a cycle route. The bank offers an open view of the imposing castles (such as at Breukelen and Muiden), picturesque villages, ambitious country estates and accompanying tearooms. Rich merchants from the Golden Age once spent their summer months here. The holidaymakers ‘only’ needed five to seven hours to reach their rural residence. Thankfully, it’s much quicker today – many of the best attractions around the Castles & Gardens are an enjoyable bike ride from Amsterdam.

2) GO BOATING Much like in the olden days, travelling on the water is still one of the best ways to explore the countryside, offering splendid vistas whilst being a meditative mode of transport close to nature. For example, you could hire a boat in Uithoorn and explore the Amstel River countryside. Meanwhile by the River Vecht, the charming town of Muiden is a must for boat lovers, with countless ships sailing into and out of the historic harbour.

3) MARVEL AT THE EXTRAVAGANT COUNTRY ESTATES Enjoy the grandeur of the beautiful country houses dating from the Golden Age, when Amsterdam’s wealthy merchants would leave their primary residence in the heart of Amsterdam and retreat to their rural estates in summertime. Southeast of Amsterdam, on the banks of the Amstel River and the River Vecht, you can still bike and boat past these historic houses with their acres of beautifully manicured gardens. Some are open to the public while others leave you dreaming of an aristocratic life by the water.

4) UNLEASH YOUR INNER KNIGHT OR DAMSEL AT THE MEDIEVAL FORTRESS STRETCH Home to many old castles, fortified towns and ruins, the picturesque fortress stretch offers a vivid window into medieval times. Muiden is one of the most spectacular examples, with the grand Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot, built around 1285 by Count Floris V, looming over the mouth of the picturesque River Vecht. A square castle with a drawbridge, five towers, battlements and embrasures, Muiderslot is a true medieval water stronghold.

CASTLES & GARDENS ›› The countryside of Noord-Holland was always a popular region for the rich merchants of the Golden Age. Each summer they would leave their primary residence in the heart of Amsterdam, retreating to extravagant castles and estates with acres of beautifully manicured gardens.. Both north west of Amsterdam, and south east, on the banks of the River Amstel and River Vecht, you can still bike and boat past these historic houses. Some are open to the public while others leave you dreaming of an aristocratic life by the water. There is much to see if you take a trip south of the city. Within a little bit more the half an hour of Amsterdam’s city centre, you can explore the former country retreats of Amsterdam’s golden age merchants, see the city’s old defensive forts or take in glorious nature and picturesque villages.

As well as providing a historic snapshot it’s a fun-filled museum for all the family: you can take a tour through the impressive knight’s hall, towers, dungeon and armoury; stroll through the beautiful herb and vegetable gardens that still retain the atmosphere of the Dutch Renaissance and enjoy the fantastic views from the ramparts.

5) FEEL LIKE A GOLDEN-AGE PAINTER Alongside the River Amstel, you will find a stunning, peaceful spot of countryside: lose yourself in the swaying reeds, green meadows and historic villages, such as Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, which dates from the 12th century. In the Golden Age, famous artists would retreat to the area to capture its wild nature. Take a romantic stroll and then have tea or dinner in one of the many quality eateries and cafes along the way.

6) EXPERIENCE THE STAUNCH BEAUTY OF THE FORTIFIED TOWN OF NAARDEN. What is the Gooi & Vecht area’s secret? Why does this area harbour so many fortresses and castles? What was it that needed all this protection? It might be hard to imagine now, but this peaceful part of Holland used to be the ultimate defence line against enemies from the east trying to get to Amsterdam’s riches. That is why the Dutch started building these defences in the Middle Ages. The sturdy Amsterdam Castle (Muiderslot) controled the river Vecht’s estuary, the fortified town of Naarden (shaped in the form of a star) guarded the only piece of dry land between the South Sea (Zuiderzee) and the lakes. Later the fortresses and fortified towns like Weesp, Muiden and Naarden worked together to keep the entire area safe. Nowadays this peaceful and pretty area does not need all these military forces. But the fortresses, castles and fortified towns are still an essential part of the landscape. They are waiting for you to come and explore them! ■

THE MOST REMARKABLE PICTURESQUE FISHING VILLAGE Volendam is the most remarkable picturesque fishing village just some 10-15 miles from Amsterdam. It dates from the era when the, now lake, IJsselmeer still was a part of the North Sea. In Volendam, if you’re lucky, you will see people in traditional costumes. As a result of its insulated location, the village preserved its character for six centuries, also because of the tough vitality of the fishermen. The characteristic small houses, which together with the canals and the drawbridges form the most picturesque spots, present the visitor an atmosphere of geniality and romance. HISTORY AND FAME The name Volendam stems from Volent-dam, which means as much as the finishing of a dam. Volendam is located on the site of the former (way back in 1357) harbour of the historic city of Edam. As Edam started a new harbour, the old one formed a new settlement, and got the name Volendam. The population of the town grew only very slowly during those first centuries of its existence. In 1462 it only had 25 inhabitants, whereas today some 19,000. Around 1875, Volendam became known as a town worth visiting by tourists, and was thusly immortalized by writers and artists. Volendam became written about both nationally and internatio-nally, and magazines published photographs of stalwart fishermen by the harbour, of the women in their graceful traditional dress and of children playing in front of picturesque houses. The rich and famous flocked to this humble fishing town, where it seemed as if time had stood still. 48 amsterdamjournal.nl

Volendam became an artist’s paradise, with people in graceful traditional costumes, the wooden little houses built closely together against, protected from the sea by the sturdy dike; their interiors replete with statuettes of saints and the harbour crowded with hundreds of red-sailed ‘botters’ (fishing boats). Some elements of this are now of the past (the herring fishery was finished when the sea was closed off), but if you are curious about how the Volendam costume was worn and what the interiors of the houses looked like, do visit the Volendammer Museum to experience a little of the Volendam of yesteryear.

THE COSTUME The costumes of Volendam are worldrenowned. Around the entire world you can see portraits of people who have had themselves photographed in Volendam costume at the time of their visit to the place. The most famous part of the Dutch costume is of course the wooden shoes or “clogs”. The clog has gone a little bit out of fashion the-

se days, but you can still occasionally see people walk around on them.

GETTING THERE There are several ways to visit the town. Probably the easiest way will be the booking of a daytrip by a tour operator. I’m sure the genitor of your hotel will be able to help you with this

WATERLAND Monnickendam, Marken, Broek in Waterland, Ilpendam, Katwoude, Overleek, Purmer, Watergang, Uitdam and Zuiderwoude are known as Waterland. Each one of these places has its own charm and a cultural and historical background that makes a visit very worth while. All places in Waterland are in easy reach from Amsterdam, whether by car, public transport. ■

The museum also includes a small presentation about the development of the coffee business as part of the heritage of Albert Heijn.

FOOD, DRINKS, NIGHTLIFE

FOOD DRINKS NIGHTLIFE

WHATEVER YOUR TASTE IS, AMSTERDAM HAS IT Amsterdam has all the nightlife you would expect. There are intimate restaurants, bars with or without live music, hip dance clubs, comedy clubs, and a casino. A complete list would fill a whole book, so we can only give you some recommendations here. RESTAURANTS | CAFÉS As one might expect from a cosmopolitan city, Amsterdam not only offers the possibility of enjoying classical French cuisine, but since a few decades the city has also abounded in - sometimes surprisingly good - Greek, Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese, Korean and even Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants. This fact has caused the extensive, daily public market in Albert Cuypstraat to adapt its range to the purchasing requirements of these restaurants. For a quick cheap lunchtime bite try the sandwich shops, the chips stands or herring stalls. Eating maatjes (‘mates’) herring is quite possibly the only important culinary tradition of our otherwise in this respect poorly endowed country. Amsterdam is also a city with many bars and cafés, some 1,500 in all. Each of the areas mentioned below has something to offer, from friendly and relaxed brown cafés, stylish grand cafés to crowded designer bars. The cafés and bars vary greatly and have their own special attraction: a wide range of beers, jenever (Dutch gin), live music, canal-side terraces, board games, pool tables or just good old fun.

BARS | LIVE MUSIC

fee to listen to live music. Singer-songwriters, jazz, pop, folk or even classical music. You just have to know where to go.

COCKTAILS | DINNER The Venice of the North, Amsterdam’s attractions are considerable. Besides the famed red-light areas where windowshopping takes on a whole new meaning and the coffee bars that are more popular for their other wares, Amsterdam is also home to hundreds of great bars and clubs: style bars, cocktail bars, bistros, restaurants and casinos, and the famous brown cafes where you can linger long over a beer and watch the people of Amsterdam go about their business. Once you’ve visited the museum quarter and taken a tour of the canals, you can hit the town. A night out in the many bars of Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein should see you into the small hours.

DINNER | CLUBS Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to groove. In Amsterdam you can party all night long, nearly every night of the week! Have a look at the listings below whether you’re into techno, drum & bass, top 40, hip-hop or anything in between, you’ll find a club to match your mood.

PIANOBAR MAXIM LEIDSEKRUISSTRAAT 33 WWW.PIANOBARMAXIM.COM The Maxim Pianobar has the laid-back vibe of a piano bar in a place like New Orleans (or at least that’s how we imagine it to feel). While it’s true there are smarter venues in the city, shinier, chicer places, this one has its own low-ley energy, a sense of heart. Inside it’s a deep red boudoir sort of space, draped in velvet. There are thick burgundy curtains and lots of dark wooden furniture and – of course – there’s a piano, where every day of the week, from 9 pm till late, live music is played.

The waterside restaurant is provided with free wifi, at less than a 5 minute drive from the A10 (also known as the beltway of Amsterdam), has 300 free parking spaces and docking places for boats.

Red Red light light AN IMPRESSION ABOUT AMSTERDAMS ELDEST RED LIGHT DISTRICT The Red Light District in Amsterdam is visited by more than 4 million visitors each year who are curious to know what goes on behind the closed curtains. The Red Light District is very close to the Dam Square. Here Amsterdam started of as a settlement around a dam in the river Amstel at the end of the 12th century. Let’s be honest

Not everything goes

Prostitution has enjoyed a long tradition of tolerance in Amsterdam. Safety is key here. In addition to preventing forced prostitution, the aim is an open and honest approach. Sex-workers here have their own union, plenty of police protection, an information centre (for visitors as well), frequent monitoring and testing and professional standards.

There are certain rules in place to ensure the safety of prostitutes and visitors to the Red Light District. It is forbidden to take photos of the women, and this is strictly enforced. Although there is 24-hour video surveillance in most parts of the district, be aware of pickpockets. They tend to target crowds of distracted tourists, so keep an eye on your belongings and leave your valuables in a safe at the hotel. Many families and people who need to get up for work the next morning live in this area. Respect their neighbourhood, and do not yell or cause disturbances.

The Amsterdam city centre has a romantic image. But behind the exciting, unconventional, ‘anything goes’ image of the city centre lurks a different reality -- a reality that sometimes consist of sex trafficking, forced prostitution. This is something that the city and the justice department are fighting against.

Changing the heart of Amsterdam New opportunities are setting in place a future for the city centre. The Amsterdam municipal council’s1012 project aims to discourage crime and corruption in the city centre by reducing the types of businesses that are conducive to crime and by permitting prostitution in just two areas. Together with local residents, business proprietors and investors, the municipal council is working to strengthen the area’s unique character and stimulate an economic upgrade.

Visiting the Red Light District The area is bustling with visitors and groups of tourists. It is best to travel in a pair or in a group, as the area also attracts some seedier characters. Grab a map and venture out or if you’re keen to learn more take one of the many specialised tours.

There is more to the Wallen The Wallen, also known as the rosse buurt to Amsterdammers and the Red Light District to visitors is actually the oldest part of Amsterdam. The neighbourhood is chock-full of interesting shops, pubs, fantastic restaurants, leaning gabled houses and the city’s most charming canals. Don’t miss the vibrant Nieuwmarkt square, the gothic Oude Kerk or a walk along the centre of Amsterdam’s Chinatown, the Zeedijk (also home to an impressive Buddhist temple).

Architecture and Fashion Another site not to miss in this area is in the Oudezijds Armsteeg. There are six beautiful restored Delft Blue houses in a row. Another nice idea is to go bargain hunting for fashion in de Red Light District. Several former prostitute’s windows in De Wallen have been transformed into exhibition spaces and studios for talented clothing, shoe and streetwear designers. ■ amsterdamjournal.nl 63
