COVERSTORY

DANCE IS ALIVE AND KICKING!

ICKFEST ICK (Emio Greco | Pieter C Scholten) presents a weekend full of dance performances, workshops, dance films and gatherings at Theater de Meervaart. As international platform for contemporary dance, ICK celebrates the beauty, revolt, joy and innovation of dance during the ICKFEST. In collaboration with Ballet National de Marseille, during the festival work of exciting Dutch and French choreographers will be shown.

SATURDAY 11 FEBRUARY SLAVE + TOGETHER TILL THE END The French choreographer David Llari created a solo for hip hop and modern dancer Thomas Barbaris about how we deal with the guilt and shame of a collective history. This piece is presented in a double bill with Togheter till the end by the Dutch choreographer Arno Schuitemaker: two performers and uplifting vibrant beats. PARA | DISO REVISITED – EMIO GRECO | PIETER C. SCHOLTEN Immeasurably blissful and horrible at the same time! Six dancers take you on their way to paradise! CLUB ICK After the last performance, the dancers invite you on the dancefloor to enjoy a live DJ set.

SUNDAY 12 FEBRUARY RECOVERY – FLORENTINA HOLZINGER In Recovery the central theme is the fight as a healing process. The stage is the arena where traumas will be coped with and a new beginning can be made. BOLÉRO & TWO Dancers from ICK and Ballet National de Marseille collaborate to show this impressive work by choreographers Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten. Boléro is a battle between nine dancers and the overpowering musical score of Ravel, while TWO is a duet in which the dancers delve into the consequences of two people sharing the same space. NIGHTWALKING II – 11 AND 12 FEBRUARY Nightwalking II is an interdisciplinary installation where visitors experience what it’s like to be deaf blind. In addition to the experience there is a movie in which the contact between a dancer (ICK) and a person with congenital deafblindness is captured. An installation by ICK and André Arends (MICH Foundation).

City of Amsterdam Where to begin? That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you the Amsterdam Journal has divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. Each area has its own character. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown (referring to the dark wood interiors) pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands (Museumkwartier – Museum Quarter), large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops (Centrum (Centre), de Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION AND USEFUL TIPS LANGUAGE

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

TRAINS

Just about everyone speaks English in Amsterdam. Many people speak German and French too but not as well. A common misconception is that Dutch is similar to German. In truth they are not: Dutch people have to learn German at school, and they generally speak better English than German. The German and Dutch languages are similar in the way that French and Italian are.

Amsterdam can best be travelled by public transport. Parking is not only a problem, but also rather expensive. Public transport is well-organised and you can either take a tram, bus, metro or taxi. The entire city centre has a dense network of trams, which can get you almost everywhere. Amsterdam also has an underground, but since there are only a few stops in the centre, this is not very practical for visitors. The trams run until just after midnight. After that there is an hourly service of night busses that leave from Central Station. For information about travelling in the Netherlands you can call the national public transport information service, phone: 0900 9292 (Dutch language, € 0,70 per min.). When you phone them, you can tell them when and where you want to go to, anywhere in the Netherlands, and then they will inform you how to get there. www.9292.nl/en

Trains in the Netherlands are fast, frequently going, comfortable and relatively cheap. Many stations have a taxi-sharing scheme called “Treintaxi’s” which only cost about e 4,20. You can check train times online on the National Dutch Railways (NS) site: www.ns.nl

WEATHER Typically, Dutch weather ranges from slight freezing in the dead of winter, usually with little snow, to pleasantly sunny days of 20 to 30ºC in the summer. Spring and autumn are pleasant.

TIME Amsterdam time is one hour ahead of GMT; when daylight saving time is in operation the sun is at its highest point at around 1.40pm (which makes for long evenings: since Amsterdam is very far West in its time zone, a midsummer sky can be light as late as 11 o’clock in the evening). Amsterdam is a late city: many shops don’t open until 10am and bars and cafés stay open till 2am and some even longer.

ELECTRICITY The electricity voltage in the Netherlands was 220 volts, and then moved up at a rate of 1 volt per year to the European standard of 230 volts. Global Blue’s service fee. For more details see globalrefund.com or call phone: (023) 5241909.

AMSTERDAMMERTJES An Amsterdammertje is the typical red brown steel bollard that is used to separate the sidewalk from the street in Amsterdam. During the 2000s, the sidewalks in Amsterdam are being slightly elevated from the streets, meaning that the Amsterdammertjes are nog longer needed to separate the sidewalk from the street. Yearly, around 2.000 Amsterdammertjes are sold online by the city government of Amsterdam.

OPENING HOURS Shops are open from 9am until 6pm daily, although many do not open until midday on Sundays and Mondays. Thursday is late shopping night with stores staying open until 9pm. However, many will offer late opening on the run up to Christmas.

TAXIS In the Netherlands it is not customary to hail a taxi. To take a taxi you go to a taxi rank, of which there are many. In your hotel, restaurants, shops, etc. you can ask them to order you a taxi, or you can call (020) 677 77 77. Taxis are of good quality, but relatively expensive. eCab, the smart city move eCab is a cooperation between market leading taxi companies in Europe and offers the costumer more than any other taxiapp. With eCab the customer not only gets quality, convenience and comfort but also can choose between two service levels: eCab | Simple and reliable Always a vehicle available, Order directly in 1 click, Payment on board (by cash or card) eCab + | More criterias Priority booking, Secured in-app payment, Selected drivers, Immediate order and prebooking. eCab can be downloaded from the App Store or from Google Play.

DRIVING A CAR IN AMSTERDAM Amsterdam’s historic centre wasn’t built for the modern means of transportation and as a result it has become quite congested over the years. Due to the municipal policy to ban cars from the city centre it is difficult nowadays to reach the centre by car and even more difficult to find a parking space. So driving in Amsterdam is not recommended.

THROUGH THE CANALS Of course the canals are one of the major attractions of the ‘Venice of the North’. By daytime already very charming, by night they become even more enchanting because many of the canal houses and bridges are beautifully illuminated. You can sample the canal views by taking a canal tour with one of the shipping companies at the Stadhouderskade or on Damrak or Rokin. Our luxurious boats are ready to guide you through Amsterdam’s many canals. Our canals have been awarded UNESCO’s World Heritage status and taking this 75-minute City Canal Cruise will reveal why. Passing all of the city’s highlights, this is simply the most relaxing and fun way to see the city. We offer audio commentary in 21 languages. Our boats also give you an unique vantage point for taking the best photographs of the city! For reservations see blueboat.nl or call +31 (0)20 679 1370.

CANAL BIKES If you care to venture into the canals on your own or if you’re feeling energetic, you can also try the more adventurous pedal boats. You can set off from one landing stage and leave your Canal Bike at another., drift through the canals in your own time, you cannot fail to discover the most surprising things and experience the unexpected! Call (020) 62 655 74 for more information or to make a reservation! ■

JORDAAN

Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. In the past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot!

AUTHENTIC WORKING CLASS AREA You can wander around through the streets and side streets in a relaxed way and enjoy the spontaneous and relaxed atmosphere. You can experience the typical atmosphere of the Jordaan, in streets like Westerstraat, Tweede Anjeliersdwarsstraat, Tweede Tuindwarsstraat and around the Noordermarkt. On Saturdays you will find the best organic farmer’s market of Amsterdam on the Noordermarkt, directly opposite the Noorderkerk (Noorder church).

PUBS/BARS AND SHOPS When you walk from the Noorderkerk to the Westerkerk (Western church) – the recogni zable church that has a blue-red crown on its tower - , you will automatically get to the Westermarkt. Here you will find the monument for gay people (1987), consisting of three large pink granite triangles. From here you can go straight onto Rozengracht (Rozen canal). This shopping street is very well-liked because of its diversity of nice shops.

ANNE FRANK HOUSE Also not far from the Westerkerk, you can take a look in the Anne Frank’s Achterhuis. Behind a closet that turns out to be a door, you will find the small house where she wrote in her diary. Very oppressive.

THE REAL PUB LIFE ‘Gezellig. This Dutch word – that can barely be translated properly -, applies perfectly to the typical (brown) pubs in the Jordaan. The atmosphere is easy-going, the people are spontaneous and speak with a very broad Amsterdam accent. You will regularly hear the sound of original Dutch music. ■

Tip s

• Do you want to visit the Anne Frank House (Prinsengracht 267)? Be there on time and prepare for serious waiting times. • Find Dutch conviviality in one of the over 60 (brown) cafés in the Jordaan. • Visit the fabric market (Lapjesmarkt) on the Noordermarkt: Mondays 8.00 – 14.00 hours. •

Feel like going on a shopping spree? At the edge of the Jordaan you will find the Haarlemmerstraat and the Haarlemmerdijk with many contemporary and unique and edgy clothes shops.

ARTIST KEREN DE VREEDE MODERN ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM

Art in the Jordaan There are many little galleries in Amsterdam, but in 2012 a new gallery opened its doors. This gallery has brought color and joy to the mix of art being offered around the Jordaan area. Already named best new coming gallery by the UK Guardian, Keren de Vreede Art Gallery with it’s magnificent works of art is definitely worth a visit. Hands on Keren de Vreede paints with merely her hands and lives her art. Bright colors, thick paint and bold and daring lines are the characteristics of her paintings. They reflect her passion for life, her positive outlook and her bright personality. A self-taught artist who discovered the desire to paint in her early years. Having used all kind of materials in the past, she prefers acrylic paint to express her creativity and achieve the result she is looking for. Instead of using the traditional easel, she positions her canvas on the floor. Her style can be described as modern abstract expressionism. Her paintings have been bought by art lovers and collectors from all over the world.

Gallery When visiting Amsterdam, weave your way down to the Prinsengracht, and make sure you visit Keren de Vreede’s Art Gallery, where the local artist is happy to chat about her textural floral canvases. Her paintings are not only very beautiful, they are also truly exceptional. Every painting is unique and impossible to replicate, even by Keren herself.

THE NINE STREETS

Nine small streets full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries.

Not far behind Dam Square, between the wellknown ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. PLEASANT, UNIQUE AND BOLD In former times the workshops of craftsmen could be found in Reestraat, Berenstraat, Runstraat, Hartenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Huidenstraat, Gasthuismolensteeg, Oude Spiegelstraat and Wijde Heisteeg. Nowadays the small streets are full of specialist shops. If you want to snap up something special, you are bound to be successful here. Contrary to the large shops in the city centre, nothing is standard here. Except the more easy-going atmosphere and the great amount of creativity.

VINTAGE, CHIC, SECOND-HAND AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN The collections of the shops show that the owners are passionate enthusiasts. Many of them have made their hobby their job. If you love clothes with just something special, you can indulge yourself in the more than fifty clothes shops. No sameness here, but mainly colourful, chic, trendy, exciting, vintage or second-hand clothes. The second-hand shops in the Nine Streets are famous for vintage, chic and second-hand clothes in Amsterdam by the way.

UNLIKE ANYTHING ELSE All the shops really show sincere interests: shoe shops with unusual collections, a sock shop for men, specialised bookshops, a cheese shop with hundreds of different types of cheeses and have you ever seen a White Teeth shop before? ■

Tip s

• On de9straatjes.nl/uk/ you can see the amount of specialised shops • Most shops in the Nine Streets are also open on Sundays, after 12.00 hours. • There are various small cafés in the Nine Streets that sell healthy sandwiches, smoothies, cheesecake and other goodies.

MUSEUM QUARTER

See the masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with your own eyes.

There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes. Where to begin? RIJKSMUSEUM (NATIONAL MUSEUM) In this impressive monumental building dating from 1885 you will find the famous masterpieces of Dutch and Flemish painters from the fifteenth up to and including the nineteenth century. Here you will also find Rembrandt’s world-famous Night Watch (1650). Other masters to be found here are: Jan Steen, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer. After a long renovation project the Rijksmuseum has been open again completely since April.

VAN GOGH MUSEUM When you walk through this museum you clearly see how this painter developed. As sombre as the paintings are that he made in the Netherlands, so colourful and vivid are the works that he made on French soil. You will also find works of contemporaries like Monet and Gauguin in the museum.

STEDELIJK MUSEUM (MUNICIPAL MUSEUM) The Stedelijk Museum, established in 1874, has a large collection of classical, modern and contemporary art. The museum owns about 90.000 objects from practically all important 20th and 21st century schools.

CONCERTGEBOUW (CONCERT BUILDING) In 1888 the first concert took place in this famous Concert building. The acoustics in the building are extraordinary. In 2013 the Concertgebouw is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Every month of the Jubilee year a different period from the history of the Concertgebouw are central.

SPIEGELKWARTIER

SPIEGELKWARTIER the art & antiques district If you collect antiques or modern art, the Spiegelkwartier is the place to go. Just across the bridge opposite the Rijksmuseum you will find this historical neighbourhood with its typical old Dutch houses. This area has been the heart of the national art and antiques trade for the past eighty years and has a friendly relaxed atmosphere. There are few places in the world where you will find such a stunning choice of art and antiques. HISTORY Today one finds fine art and antiques dealers in almost every house in the Nieuwe Spiegelstraat and on the Spiegelgracht. This is the result of a historical development of almost 120 years. Without the building of the renown Rijksmuseum the neighbourhood would surely have looked very different. Before the Rijksmuseum was built (1877/1885) there used to be a large windmill on that spot. The existing small business like watchmakers, carpenters, furniture repair shops etc, slowly changed into art and antique dealers. ARTS & ANTIQUES (MINI MUSEUMS) In a cluster of historic houses, you can find a rich treasure-trove of art and antiques,mini-museums that invite you not only to admire, but give you the opportunity to buy. The shops and galleries of the Spiegelkwartier offer some of the finest art and antiques you’re likely to find anywhere in the world, from Roman glass to Dutch Old Masters, from Delftware to tribal art, contemporary sculpture to Art Deco jewellery, centuries-old furniture to a painting finished yesterday. The Spiegelkwartier has been at the heart of the Dutch art and antiques trade for more than a hundred years. Over 70 specialised dealers offer not only top-quality collections, but considerable expertise. And they gladly share there expertise with you. RIJKSMUSEUM According to old address books the first antique dealer started in 1900 in de Kerkstraat nr 219. In 1910 there are already seven antique shops mentioned. After the war the number of galleries and shops really extended. If one looks at the objects bought by the Rijksmuseum in the Spiegelkwartier one notices that it mainly concerns objects like furniture, glass, textile and earthenware.

This is not surprising since the shops were specialized in these antiquities. The proof of a historically grown connection with the Rijksmuseum is the exhibition in 1985 of a selection of objects bought in the Spiegelkwartier. FROM ARCHEOLOGICAL FINDS TO SOUVENIRS The Art and Antique dealers offer a wide variety of objects, ranging from archeological finds to 17th century furniture, glass and Dutch Delftware, from oriental art to Art Nouveau, from tribal art to contemporary art, from medieval statues and antique clocks to jewellery and, last but not at least paintings from the COBRA period or finished yesterday. And you don’t have to break the plastic, also for little money you can buy an unique ‘souvenir’. FOOD & DRINKS & SHOPPING Tucked in between these Aladdin’s caves are cafés and restaurants perfect for a little time out, whether you feel like a bowl of healthy soup, or coffee and cake; a light lunch or dinner with singing staff. You can pick up nifty vintage clothes at knock-down prices, or pre-loved designer wear. Then there are shoes and bags from famed Dutch designers and gifts aplently, from stylish Dutch contemporary object to toys for the kids back home. MUSEUMS A visit to the Spiegelkwartier is easy to combine with a visit to one of many museums in the area. At walking distance you will find the Rijksmuseum, Vincent van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, FOAM and the Allard Pierson museum. A fun way to get to the Spiegelkwartier and the nearby Rijksmuseum, is with the CANAL-BUS. WWW.SPIEGELKWARTIER.AMSTERDAM amsterdamjournal.nl 17

Amsterdam houses the dream of every vintage jewellery lover: the Droomfabriek, or ‘factory of dreams’. Selling a large range of costume jewellery made by designers such as Miriam Haskell, Kenneth Jay Lane and Yves St. Laurent, as well as offering antique objects and photographs, the shop is a true treasure trove. High-end fashion designers including Elsa Schiaparelli and Coco Chanel were often spotted wearing costume jewellery. Chanel reasoned that “to ask a woman to wear real jewellery only is like asking her to cover herself with real flowers instead of floral silk prints. She’d look faded in a few hours.” Aside from costume jewellery, the Droomfabriek has an eclectic mix of antiques, objets trouvés, vintage handbags (Chanel, Gucci, Judith Leiber), Hermès scarfs and ties.

Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. Although not appreciated by everyone, a tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. Close to Central station you will find one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam: the Zeedijk. The place is swarming with restaurants, cafés and Indonesian shops (tokos). The Zeedijk is the centre of China Town; the Peking ducks hang behind the windows and a large Buddhist temple colours the street scene.

OLD TOWN From midday you will increasingly smell aromas that make your mouth water. Pull up a chair in one of the smaller Chinese restaurants. This is where Chinese Amsterdammers (or Amsterdam Chinese) eat too. Is there a line somewhere? Then the wait is very probably highly worthwhile!

RED LIGHT DISTRICT The Red Light district covers the area between Zeedijk and Warmoesstraat. As soon as dusk falls and the shining red light greets you, the atmosphere is loose and laid back here. The ladies behind the windows wink playfully are friendly and wave to the merry passers-by. Do you want to get your breath back for a moment from all the impressions? There are plenty of pubs to recover while enjoying a beer.

ARTIST MARK RAVEN Text: Sarah Saarberg

and his Contemporary City Impressions

It is obvious that the artist Mark Raven loves his birthplace by each and every work he has made of Amsterdam. This city never ceases to captivate and inspire him. Mark’s work is modern and wayward, but is unmistakably connected to this versatile and interesting capitol of ours. If Marks Raven’s father had had his way, Mark would have become a journalist. At the time, he followed his advice and went to the school for journalism. But he clearly was destined for other things. The artist explains his chosen medium: “The image, as means of communication, is far more appealing to me than text. Moreover, an image is universal. Everyone understands it.” And so, Mark installed himself as a street artist on a rug in the tunnel underneath the Rijksmuseum to capture the city in every way. “I love the city. But I love people too. I immediately want to show them what I make.”

KIOSK ON MUSEUMPLEIN Mark’s work was liked right from the beginning. So much even, that the city council helped him to a studio right on the Museumplein in the form of a rebuild flower stall. Mark wanted his art to be accessible for everyone, and so he began to print tshirts and posters with his work. “I would like it if everyone could enjoy my view of Amsterdam,” he simply says.

M.C. Escher’s graphic work, but gradually generated his modern touch. Mark combines traditional etching techniques with painting and modern graphic and digital techniques. All in a style that appeals to a lot of people. And not just tourists. Many Amsterdammers have a Mark Raven hanging on their wall.

ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERY BUDGET Nowadays, Mark Raven is located at the renowned shoppingstreet of Amsterdam the “Leidsestraat” near the “Leidseplein” and he has a gallery slash shop on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, a fabulous location right behind Dam square next to Magna Plaza. On the ground floor you can buy t-shirts, posters, postcards and other articles, all with the recognizable Mark Raven art. Upstairs, you can find original prints, some printed in a limited edition, others not. This is for the reason that, despite his enormous success, Mark Raven wants to be attainable for every budget. “My boxes with coasters are very popular with backpackers. I like that: in this way, my view on Amsterdam will spread all around the world.”

REMBRANDT AND ESCHER Over the years, the art he has made, developed from highly detailed pen-and-ink drawings to a wilder and more suggestive play with lines. In his early days, Mark worked in the tradition of Rembrandt’s etchings and

THE DOCKLANDS

The architecture of Amsterdam in the future.

In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN DESIGN Present and past have been brought together in the architecture and the urban design of the Docklands. The harbour feeling is still alive, but old warehouses have been given new functions and the diverging designs of various artists link up with each other perfectly. Admire the special houses on KNSM island, walk across the whole Java island via the pedestrian bridges and take a look at the Whale (or Sphinx) on the Sporenbrug on Borneo island. IJburg is absolutely worth a visit for architectural buffs. The urban design scheme here is based on the ‘collage city concept’. The island consists of 8 neighbourhoods, each of which has its own individual character.

GOING OUT AND MUSIC The Docklands attract many artistic people, so it comes as no surprise that when it comes to culture and going out there is plenty to do here. It’s mainly about contemporary classical music in the Music Building (Muziekgebouw) on IJ lake (a ten-minute walk from the back of the Central Station). The Bim house (Bim huis), that protrudes on the street side of the Music Building is a concert hall for jazz and improvised music. When you cross the IJ with the Ferry (Pont) from the back of the railway station, you get to another striking building: the Netherlands EYE Film Institute. The collection of the EYE comprises the complete film history. ■

Tip s

• Take a guided walk (also in the English language) on the Eastern Docklands • Visit the permanent showing in the basement of the EYE Film Institute Nederland for free. • Pay a visit to the beautiful Maritime Museum and get on board a replica of a VOC ship. (Kattenburgerplein 1) • Enjoy the sun on the roof terrace of the Nemo Science Centre (free of charge) or be surprised in this museum about technology and science. The Nemo Science Centre is equally interesting and fun for adults as it is for children.

The festival includes a conference, performances, film programme, workshops, masterclasses and club nights at Paradiso, Stedelijk Museum, Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, Bimhuis, De Brakke Grond and OT301, with an exhibition running from 1 to 26 February at Arti et Amicitiae. Sonic Acts has also commissioned a series of new audiovisual works and sound installations.

Amsterdam, 29 September 2016 - Swiss artist Jean Tinguely (1925– 1991) is famous for his playful, boldly kinetic machines and explosive performances. Everything had to be different, everything had to move. Precisely twenty-five years after his death, the Stedelijk opens the largest Tinguely retrospective to be mounted in a Dutch museum and the most comprehensive internationally in thirty years. With over a hundred machine sculptures, most of which are in working order, paired with films, photos, drawings, and archive materials, the presentation takes the public on a chronological and thematic journey of Tinguely’s artistic development and ideas.

All these works are part of the unique collection of The National Maritime Museum. The collection history of the museum and its unique objects is central in the new exhibition ‘Drive’

The title of this exhibition refers to what is ultimately dissolved in the work of Harley Weir. But even as she crosses the lines of what usually holds people apart, on personal as well as political levels she is not out to make any statements. The retrospective features 22 iconic photos of Parisians dating back to the 1950s from the photography collection of the famous French magazine Paris Match, including some shots from photographer Emanuele Scorcelletti. The contemporary aspect features 10 winning photos from the contest La Parisienne. The traveling photo exhibit La Parisienne by Sofitel embodies a key Sofitel pillar: culture. As an ambassador of French elegance around the world, Sofitel makes it a point of honor to celebrate its French heritage via numerous cultural events linked to literature, fashion and art.

The exhibition tells the story of Schiphol – all the way from a muddy field to a high-tech airport. On 19 September 1916, precisely one hundred years ago, an aeroplane first landed on a piece of farmland in the Haarlemmermeer. As well as looking back at the airport’s origins, the exhibition considers Schiphol’s future. Visit the exhibition and take a virtual ride on the luggage carousel, marvel at a specially built model of an air-traffic control tower, see the first ever key to Schiphol, look at a Second World War bomb, and view historical stewardess uniforms.

In her work, Solinas attempts to materialise abstract concepts such as identity or the spiritual in a systematic and factual manner. She employs photography as a part of a diverse array of research methods – alongside language, video and installation. The research process is central to her practice; by collaborating with experts from various disciplines Solinas investigates the shared role of the artist, the scientist and the medium as moderators of reality.

It shows how at the start of his career, Vincent van Gogh teaches himself to translate his view of the world into images. The emphasis in the exhibition is on drawings, which are rarely shown due to their sensitivity to light. The works in the exhibition are commented upon by Van Gogh himself with quotations from his letters. Writer Auke van der Woud is guest curator of the exhibition. In the exhibition texts and with the addition of photographs by Henri Berssenbrugge (1873-1959), he places Van Gogh’s unusual choice for his fellow man in the workingclass districts in the context of the late nineteenth century.

The second work, Silent Screen, can be seen as the epitome of a transdisciplinary performance where dance, theatre, film and music effortlessly come together to melt into a painterly Gesamtkunstwerk. Here, León and Lightfoot’s other longtime creative partnership with Philip Glass is highlighted. With that, Scenic Routeacts as a nod of recognition to both these composers that have played an important role in León and Lightfoot’s careers from the beginning.

With Prince Igor, Dutch National Opera is continuing the line of the great Russian opera repertoire, after successful productions of Boris Godunov, Eugene Onegin, Pique dame, The legend of the invisible city of Kitezh and Khovanshchina. Many people attending concert halls are already familiar with the ‘Polovtsian Dances’ from Prince Igor, with which the Chorus of Dutch National Opera made a great impression at the Opera Gala in 2015.

Vincent van Gogh, Head of a woman wearing a white cap, November 1884 - May 1885

The exhibition shows how at the start of his career, Vincent van Gogh teaches himself to translate his view of the world into images. Unlike contemporaries such as Isaac Israels or George Breitner, he focuses not on the cosmopolitan city life, but instead on the fringes of society. On people who have to work hard for their living, in humble workshops and on farmlands in all weathers. Van Gogh tries to sincerely express his compassion for their way of life. Or, as he puts it himself in a letter to his brother Theo: ‘I say it again – work against indifference – perseverance isn’t easy – but things that are easy mean little.’

The works are commented upon by Van Gogh himself with quotes from his letters. The exhibition also includes photographs by Henri Berssenbrugge (1873-1959) who, like Van Gogh, depicted people on the fringes of society.

Amsterdam Metropolitan Area

The AMA lies to the north of the Randstad and encompasses the city of Amsterdam and the Dutch provinces of North Holland and Flevoland. The area has a totalpopulation of over 2 million inhabitants. The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (AMA) is comprised of several surrounding municipalities, including the cities of Amsterdam, Almere, Amstelveen and Haarlemmermeer, Hilversum and Velsen. FLOWERS OF AMSTERDAM:

OLD HOLLAND

The Flower Strip is one of the most popular and unique sights in the Netherlands. Every spring the entire region bursts into vivid colour as bulbs shoot and millions of flowers blossom. One of the biggest attractions is the Keukenhof Gardens, the world’s largest flower gardens and a home to more varieties of tulip than you can imagine.

With its countless windmills, churches and old-fashioned farmhouses, stepping out into Old Holland can feel like being in a Golden Age painting.

TRADITIONALLY DUTCH: Noord-Holland towns such as Marken, Volendam and Edam hark back to times of more honest crafts, show casing the

traditional skills the region was famous for: shipbuilding, fishing and cheese making. Alongside such classic industries, you can also experience the heritage of the industrial revolution – a time when smoking chimney stacks and spinning sails enabled the mass production of chocolate and biscuits.

AMSTERDAM METROPOLITAN AREA

NEW LAND Although famous for its historic city centre, the Amsterdam region is always evolving as new immigrants and diverse cultures make their mark on many neighbourhoods. But probably the most dramatic changes have taken place in the province of Flevoland.

ARCHITECTURE & NATURE Just north east of Amsterdam, these polders were reclaimed from the sea, giving birth to the new cities of Almere and Lelystad. Not only are they internationally acclaimed playgrounds for architecture and design, they are also blessed with expanses of wild nature on the doorstep.

ZANDVOORT’S BUBBLING BEACH Zandvoort is how a beach resort should be. With hotels, cafés, restaurants, a lively boulevard, bustling shopping streets and a touch of allure! Stroll around, watch people parading the beach boulevard, shop and hop from one terrace to the next. You’ll also be surprised by the small alleyways and old buildings in the centre and round the day off with a four-course dinner in a top restaurant. Or keep things frugal by an open fire in the warmth of a beach café. This will leave you some money for the casino or for a relaxed day at one of the beauty and wellness salons. Zandvoort’s fame also stems from the racing circuit that was created in 1848 and where Formula 1 races were once held. In the summer there is something on nearly every weekend. Tip: Visit Zandvoort aan Zee by train or use your Region Day Ticket to travel to Amsterdam Beach by bus.

DUTCH DUNES Put on your walking shoes or hire a bike for a jaunt through Holland’s dunes. A varied nature reserve with sloping dunes, lakes, forests and rare animals like deer and wisent. The dunes contain all sorts of surprises like military bunkers and magnificent viewpoints. Don’t forget the fact that this stretch of coast is what protects the Netherlands from the sea. After all, half our country lies well below sea level! Zandvoort aan Zee is one of the most versatile resorts in the Netherlands. A great city centre surrounded by unique nature combined with a beautiful beach makes Zandvoort aan Zee a must-see for every visitor of Amsterdam.

Discover CASTLES &

GARDENS ››

The countryside of Noord-Holland was always a popular region for the rich merchants of the Golden Age. Each summer they would leave their primary residence in the heart of Amsterdam, retreating to extravagant castles and estates with acres of beautifully manicured gardens.. History meets nature Both north west of Amsterdam, and south east, on the banks of the River Amstel and River Vecht, you can still bike and boat past these historic houses. Some are open to the public while others leave you dreaming of an aristocratic life by the water. There is much to see if you take a trip south of the city. Within a little bit more the half an hour of Amsterdam’s city centre, you can explore the former country retreats of Amsterdam’s golden age merchants, see the city’s old defensive forts or take in glorious nature and picturesque villages.

FEEL LIKE AMSTERDAM BEACH? = FEEL LIKE ZANDVOORT!

CASTLES & GARDENS

HERE ARE FIVE OF THE BEST THINGS TO DO AROUND THE AREA KNOWN AS CASTLES & GARDENS! 1) CYCLE ALONG THE RIVER VECHT The winding River Vecht between Amsterdam and Utrecht is a wonderful setting for a cycle route. The bank offers an open view of the imposing castles (such as at Breukelen and Muiden), picturesque villages, ambitious country estates and accompanying tearooms. Rich merchants from the Golden Age once spent their summer months here. The holidaymakers ‘only’ needed five to seven hours to reach their rural residence. Thankfully, it’s much quicker today – many of the best attractions around the Castles & Gardens are an enjoyable bike ride from Amsterdam.

2) GO BOATING Much like in the olden days, travelling on the water is still one of the best ways to explore the countryside, offering splendid vistas whilst being a meditative mode of transport close to nature. For example, you could hire a boat in Uithoorn and explore the Amstel River countryside. Meanwhile by the River Vecht, the charming town of Muiden is a must for boat lovers, with countless ships sailing into and out of the historic harbour.

6) EXPERIENCE THE STAUNCH BEAUTY OF NAARDEN. What is the Gooi & Vecht area’s secret? Why does this area harbour so many fortresses and castles? What was it that needed all this protection? It might be hard to imagine now, but this peaceful part of Holland used to be the ultimate defence line against enemies from the east trying to get to Amsterdam’s riches. That is why the Dutch started building these defences in the Middle Ages. The sturdy Amsterdam Castle (Muiderslot) controled the river Vecht’s estuary, the fortified town of Naarden (shaped in the form of a star) guarded the only piece of dry land between the South Sea (Zuiderzee) and the lakes. Later the fortresses and fortified towns like Weesp, Muiden and Naarden worked together to keep the entire area safe. Nowadays this peaceful and pretty area does not need all these military forces. But the fortresses, castles and fortified towns are still an essential part of the landscape. They are waiting for you to come and explore them! Must sees in Naarden are Fortress Naarden, now a Museum called the Vesting Museum and Yacht Harbour Naarden.

3) MARVEL AT THE EXTRAVAGANT COUNTRY ESTATES Enjoy the grandeur of the beautiful country houses dating from the Golden Age, when Amsterdam’s wealthy merchants would leave their primary residence in the heart of Amsterdam and retreat to their rural estates in summertime. South-east of Amsterdam, on the banks of the Amstel River and the River Vecht, you can still bike and boat past these historic houses with their acres of beautifully manicured gardens. Some are open to the public while others leave you dreaming of an aristocratic life by the water.

4) UNLEASH YOUR INNER KNIGHT OR DAMSEL Home to many old castles, fortified towns and ruins, the picturesque fortress stretch offers a vivid window into medieval times. Muiden is one of the most spectacular examples, with the grand Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot, built around 1285 by Count Floris V, looming over the mouth of the picturesque River Vecht. A square castle with a drawbridge, five towers, battlements and embrasures, Muiderslot is a true medieval water stronghold. As well as providing a historic snapshot it’s a fun-filled museum for all the family: you can take a tour through the impressive knight’s hall, towers, dungeon and armoury; stroll through the beautiful herb and vegetable gardens that still retain the atmosphere of the Dutch Renaissance and enjoy the fantastic views from the ramparts.

5) FEEL LIKE A GOLDEN-AGE PAINTER Alongside the River Amstel, you will find a stunning, peaceful spot of countryside: lose yourself in the swaying reeds, green meadows and historic villages, such as Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, which dates from the 12th century. In the Golden Age, famous artists would retreat to the area to capture its wild nature. Take a romantic stroll and then have tea or dinner in one of the many quality eateries and cafes along the way.

WAYWARD EXHIBITION ON “DE MAAKBARE MENS” (MANMADE MAN) IN THE DOLHUYS MUSEUM SCHOTERSINGEL 2 | 2021 GE HAARLEM INFO@HETDOLHUYS.NL | WWW.HETDOLHUYS.NL Ever met a perfect person? So… how was it? The Dolhuys, museum of the mind, presents their new exhibition “De Maakbare Mens” (Manmade Man’) with this slogan. The museum puts artificiality up for discussion in a unique way. Many Dutch people want to be perfect nowadays. We strive for a healthy spirit, impeccable behavior and a perfect body. We collectively post an ideal image of ourselves on Facebook every day, but can we always continue to meet these high standards? People who cannot, are excluded. The “imperfect” do not belong, are insane, limited, scary, pathetic or unwell. But to be truly successful, think of artists and scientists, should you not deviate from the norm? The visitor comes face-to-face with their own “artificiality” with a selfie. They will meet a wide range of special minds, including the successful writer Myrthe van der Meer, the artists Edvard Munch, Vincent van Gogh, Willem van Genk and Anton Heijboer. On the basis of works of art, films and photography the audience will get a glimpse into their mind. In an audiovisual presentation based on quotes from letters of Munch and Van Gogh and visual clips of their work, both artists talk about the link between their mental illness and their artistry. Van Gogh spent some time in a psychiatric facility. Munch did not think of himself as ill, but saw his fear as the basis for his art. Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday: 10 am – 5 pm Saturdays, Sunday and Bank Holidays: 12 noon – 5 pm Closed on: 1 January, 27 April and 25 December

Just as seventeenth-century Haarlem offered fertile soil in which an innovative urge expressed in art could grow and flourish, so today De Hallen Haarlem aims to provide a platform for developments in contemporary art, based on the same open and proactive attitude.

In the early seventeenth century painting underwent a radical change, and the foundations for this were laid in Haarlem. The Frans Hals Museum’s collection, which encompasses the entire spectrum of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century painting, reflects this revolutionary change.

It is Nikkie Plessen’s eye for detail which makes every NIKKIE collection strong, elegant and distinctly Dutch. Nikkie started designing a small fashion collection that reflected her personal feminine, sexy and edgy style. Right now NIKKIE is distributed and sold in over 15 countries.

A city of remarkable history and culture, Haarlem is just a short hop from Amsterdam but packs a unique punch. With spectacular monuments dating back almost 800 years, such as the Amsterdamse Poort and SintBavokerk, it’s no wonder that so many great artists of the Golden Age wanted to capture its beauty and atmosphere. Frans Hals, one of the Netherlands’ greatest painters, is celebrated in theFrans Hals Museum (alongside paintings by his peers). Of course, Haarlem has made an impact in more recent times too. TULPOMANIA EXPERIENCE HAARLEM Inspired by the tulip mania that swept through Holland during the Dutch Golden Age, Haarlem Marketing has entered into a unique collaboration with Keukenhof, the Frans Hals Museum and the Jopen beer brewery. These four partners join forces to bring you the Tulip Mania experience tour, which tells visitors the fascinating story of the tulip mania that reached a fever pitch in the Golden Age. In Haarlem, the centre of the tulip trade, tulips were extremely popular in the 17th century. Their prices soared to spectacular heights and bulbs became

23-12-16 12:15

the object of unprecedented speculation. As a result, some people made great profits whereas others experienced enormous losses. A visit to the Jopen beer brewery walking tour through Haarlem’s inner city bring the Dutch Golden Age back to life. In both the Frans Hals Museum and Keukenhof the visitors are treated to beautiful fresh flowers in addition to presentations on the 17th century tulip mania, the fascinating story of the speculative tulip trade.

TULIP MANIA In early 17th century Holland, tulips were an exclusive and particularly rare status symbol. The slow increase in the number of tulip bulbs relative to the great demand created a wild speculation in bulbs, a ‘tulip craze’ that saw prices explode to tens of thousands of euros per bulb. For the same amount you could have purchased an entire canal house. This speculative bubble burst abruptly, but the tulip trade survived. Information: tulpomania.com. ■

Volendam is the most remarkable picturesque fishing village just some 10-15 miles from Amsterdam. It dates from the era when the, now lake, IJsselmeer still was a part of the North Sea. In Volendam, if you’re lucky, you will see people in traditional costumes. As a result of its insulated location, the village preserved its character for six centuries, also because of the tough vitality of the fishermen. The characteristic small houses, which together with the canals and the drawbridges form the most picturesque spots, present the visitor an atmosphere of geniality and romance. HISTORY AND FAME The name Volendam stems from Vol-entdam, which means as much as the finishing of a dam. Volendam is located on the site of the former (way back in 1357) harbour of the historic city of Edam. As Edam started a new harbour, the old one formed a new settlement, and got the name Volendam. The population of the town grew only very slowly during those first centuries of its existence. In 1462 it only had 25 inhabitants, whereas today some 19,000. Around 1875, Volendam became known as a town worth visiting by tourists, and was thusly immortalized by writers and artists. Volendam became written about both nationally and

50 amsterdamjournal.nl

internatio-nally, and magazines published photographs of stalwart fishermen by the harbour, of the women in their graceful traditional dress and of children playing in front of picturesque houses. The rich and famous flocked to this humble fishing town, where it seemed as if time had stood still. Volendam became an artist’s paradise, with people in graceful traditional costumes, the wooden little houses built closely together against, protected from the sea by the sturdy dike; their interiors replete with statuettes of saints and the harbour crowded with hundreds of red-sailed ‘botters’ (fishing boats).

VOLENDAM

Origin of Traditional Quality

Excellence on the IJsselmeer a benchmark for Volendam’s tradition and quality Paviljoen Smit-Bokkum is the home of an eel smoke-house since 1856, where the 5th generation of the Smit-Bokkum family daily smokes Holland’s best fish, preserving the ancient family recipe. The Smit-Bokkum family restaurant next to the smokehouse serves home-smoked delicacies together with a selection of local traditional menus. Especially the famous home-smoked IJsselmeer eels daily draws a client base from all over the country. Smit-Bokkum’s lovely terrace offers seats for over 100 guests. Seated here you can take in the magnificent views of the IJsselmeer and the Marinapark harbour. TIP: A dinner or lunch at Smit-Bokkum can also be combined with a guided tour through the smoke-house and a visit to the Palingsoundmuseum above the restaurant.

Slobbeland 19, Volendam - tel 0299 363373 - www.smitbokkum.nl Some elements of this are now of the past (the herring fishery was finished when the sea was closed off), but if you are curious about how the Volendam costume was worn and what the interiors of the houses looked like, do visit the Volendammer Museum to experience a little of the Volendam of yesteryear.

THE COSTUME The costumes of Volendam are worldrenowned. Around the entire world you can see portraits of people who have had themselves photographed in Volendam costume at the time of their visit to the place. The most famous part of the Dutch costume is of course the wooden shoes or “clogs”. The clog has gone a little bit out of fashion these days, but you can still occasionally see people walk around on them.

WATERLAND Monnickendam, Marken, Broek in Waterland, Ilpendam, Katwoude, Overleek, Purmer, Watergang, Uitdam and Zuiderwoude are known as Waterland. Each one of these places has its own charm and a cultural and historical background that makes a visit very worth while. Enjoy the wellmaintained monuments that adorn the old cityscapes and village views. Nearly half of the entire surface area of Waterland consists of water (no less than 5000 hectares). The municipality thus provides considerable opportunities for water recreation; sailing on the Markermeer or IJsselmeer lakes and having a drink at one of the outdoor cafes in one of the pictures-

que villages or cities. If you would like to explore Waterland by boat, consider a whispering boat, motorboat, rowing boat or canoe. Explore the best of Waterland on the water, between the reeds, with a gentle breeze for company. Waterland is also pre-eminently suitable for walking tours and bicycle rides. The decor consists of open grass polders, peat rivers and ribbon development villages with colourful woorden houses and traditional Dutch farmhouses built in the shape of pyramids. All places in Waterland are in easy reach from Amsterdam, whether by car, public transport. ■

GETTING THERE There are several ways to visit the town. Probably the easiest way will be the booking of a daytrip by a tour operator. I’m sure the genitor of your hotel will be able to help you with this

STEP BACK INTO THE SEVENTEENTH OR EIGHTEENTH CENTURY The Zaanse Schans offers a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape as it was before and after the industrial revolution. However this is not an open air museum but a colourful living and working neighbourhood. This panorama makes the Zaanse Schans a vital link in the European Route of Industrial Heritage. WINDMILLS A visit to a working industrial windmill is a unique experience. Paint mill De Kat and oil mill De Zoeker are open daily from March to October. From November to February most of the windmills at the Zaanse Schans only open at the weekends. The Jonge Schaap is open all year.

MUSEUMS The Zaanse Schans has a number of fascinating museums to tempt the visitor. The Zaans Museum and the Verkade Pavilion make the tastiest museum in the Netherlands. The collection is extremely wide-ranging and is presented in a contemporary way. It features utensils, clothing and paintings as well as factory equipment from the food industry, and as you make your way through the museum you can press on various displays and try and package as many biscuits and sweets as you can in a computer game.

RIVER CRUISES

The smaller, specialized museums such as the first Albert Heijn Grocery shop, the Bakery Museum ‘In de Gecroonde Duyvekater’ where traditional delicacies are sold, Museum of the Dutch Clock, are all situated at the Zaanse Schans in listed buildings bringing the history of this oldest industrial area to life.

The most enjoyable way to see the surrounding area is from the water. From April to October river cruises are available along the river Zaan not only for a splendid view of the Zaanse Schans, but also for a more detailed examination of the traditional and picturesque Dutch houses, windmills and other interesting sights along the way.

TRADITIONAL DUTCH CRAFT There is no entrance fee for visiting the traditional Dutch workshops such as the Wooden Shoe Workshop where you can see the clog makers at work and the Cheese Farm where you can learn about the different stages of Cheese making. In craftcenter De Saense Lelie you will find an artist specialised in Delft Blue decoration, a diamond cutter and goldsmiths. But 52 amsterdamjournal.nl

that is not all, as other traditional crafts are also represented here, including a local oil painter and popular Assendelft art. For a workshop making your own souvenir you can visit, Orse ket aan ‘t Glop. New! is “ Soap Works Zaanse Schans” on the Zeilenmakerspad number 4, next to the bakery museum. Zaandam has had a wonderful history of soapmaking, like the soap factory “The Eagle” in Wormerveer, we thought it was an addition to the Zaanse Schans to show the history. And generally show the history of hygiene and cleaning. We also sell craft hand made soaps, cosmetics, perfumes and everything related to hygiene and cleaning. There is a mini workshop / museum space. Throughout the store there are magnificent museum pieces to admire.Opening times may vary, but generally they are open daily throughout the year.

Information Center Zaanse Schans The Zaanse Schans is open daily throughout the year. There is no entrance fee, however some of the attractions charge an admission fee.

FOOD, DRINKS, NIGHTLIFE

WHATEVER YOUR TASTE IS,

Amsterdam has it

Amsterdam has all the nightlife you would expect. There are intimate restaurants, bars with or without live music, hip dance clubs, comedy clubs, and a casino. A complete list would fill a whole book, so we can only give you some recommendations here. RESTAURANTS | CAFÉS As one might expect from a cosmopolitan city, Amsterdam not only offers the possibility of enjoying classical French cuisine, but since a few decades the city has also abounded in - sometimes surprisingly good - Greek, Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese, Korean and even Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants. This fact has caused the extensive, daily public market in Albert Cuypstraat to adapt its range to the purchasing requirements of these restaurants. For a quick cheap lunchtime bite try the sandwich shops, the chips stands or herring stalls. Eating maa tjes (‘mates’) herring is quite possibly the only important culinary tradition of our otherwise in this respect poorly endowed country. Amsterdam is also a city with many bars and cafés, some 1,500 in all. Each of the areas mentioned below has something to offer, from friendly and relaxed brown cafés, stylish grand cafés to crowded designer bars. The cafés and bars vary greatly and have their own special attraction: a wide range of beers, jenever (Dutch gin), live music, canal-side terraces, board games, pool tables or just good old fun.

BARS | LIVE MUSIC Amsterdam has some great small bars where you enter for free and or a small fee to listen to live music. Singer-songwriters, jazz, pop, folk or even classical music. You just have to know where to go.

COCKTAILS | DINNER The Venice of the North, Amsterdam’s attractions are considerable. Besides the famed red-light areas where window-shopping takes on a whole new meaning and the coffee bars that are more popular for their other wares, Amsterdam is also home to hundreds of great bars and clubs: style bars, cocktail bars, bistros, restaurants and casinos, and the famous brown cafes where you can linger long over a beer and watch the people of Amsterdam go about their business. Once you’ve visited the museum quarter and taken a tour of the canals, you can hit the town. A night out in the many bars of Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein should see you into the small hours.

THE HOUSE OF BOLS

PAULUS POTTERSTRAAT 14 | +31 (0)20 5708575 The acclaimed House of Bols creates a completely new experience: an homage to the cocktail. The Art of Flavour: bring flavour to life. House of Bols takes visitors on a spectacular journey through the history of the world’s oldest distilled brand Bols, the art of distilling liqueurs and genever. You can also learn how to create delicious cocktails yourself. Outstanding is the new ‘Art of Flavour’ experience. In three rooms flavours are visualized in a spectacular way. Every visitor will go through a unique flavour experience where you taste, feel, hear and see it come to life! More info: www.houseofbols.com

HOORN

Nestly on the former Zuiderzee, roughly 30 km north of Amsterdam, is the historic city of Hoorn. From Amsterdam, the city is easily accessible by car (theA-7 motorway) and train. Whether you arrive by car, train or even boat, the main square of the city, the Roode Steen, is only a distance of ten minutes. The square is dominated by the Westfries Museum and is the perfect starting point to explore the city and walk to the historic harbour. Its seems as if time has stood still.

WESTFRIES MUSEUM Hovering above the historic square lined with outdoor cafes is the imposing façade of the Westfries Museum. The building is constructed in 1632 and dates from the time that Hoorn was one of the largest and most prosperous cities of Holland. The building and its twenty-seven rooms are in their own right, worth a visit. But then there is also the magnificent collection of seventeenth century masters, which are the icing on the cake. And in the Marble-room the museum presents special expositions.

ORPHANS OF THE VOC From this autumn the unique exposition ‘Vêrlander Weeskinderen van de VOC (Orphans of the VOC)’ can be admired on four continents. The Westfries Museum in Hoorn is responsible for the European edition. From December 17 2016 until April 10 2017, 30 portraits by the Amsterdam photographer Geert Snoeijer can be seen in Hoorn. An audio tour, in which a number of people portrayed will speak, brings the shared history with the Dutch people to life.

Vêrlander - de Weeskinderen van de VOC (the Orphans of the VOC). Open from 17 December 2016 until 10 April 2017 in the Westfries Museum in Hoorn.
