The greatest Swan Lake in the World With more swans than you can count! Unique collaboration of the Shanghai Ballet and England’s top choreographer Derek Deane The greatest Swan Lake in the world from China will spread her wings this Christmas season. At the initiative of Stardust Theatre, producer of this impressive ballet fest, Derek Deane has rehearsed his version of Swan Lake with the Shanghai Ballet! Instead of 16 swans, this production will bring 48 swans on to the stage. The decision to ask Derek Deane for this task, was an easy one. The dance expert has a great reputation when it comes to creating grand arena productions with the English National Ballet. His Swan Lake was, amongst other venues, performed in the Royal Albert Hall.

The premiere for the Shanghai Ballet took place earlier this year in a sold out Grand Theatre, in Shanghai. It was a sensation, which has already managed to attract more international attention. Derek Deane’s achievement with the 48 Chinese ballerina’s is absolutely magical. With his choreography he has added a beautiful new chapter to Swan Lake, without affecting the authenticity of this ballet classic.

Celebrate a magical Christmas with the most beloved ballet in the world from the 23rd until the 30th of December at the RAI Theater in Amsterdam. You can book your tickets by calling 0900-3311333 (45cpm) or visit our website www.stardusttheatre.org

The stunning Chinese ballerina’s form an enchanting, homogenous whole, which in its charisma and perfection are equal to that of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Ballet.

A Golden Clown Festival

31st World Christmas Circus Carré The most award-winning circus-program ever!

Nowhere is circus more beautiful than in Carré The upcoming “World Christmas Circus” in Royal Theatre Carré from December 17 until January 3rd, will present its most awarded Christmas program ever. Almost every number has received an award at one of the biggest circus festivals in the world in Monte Carlo, Paris, Beijing, Moscow, etc. It is with pride that the “World Christmas Circus” presents Black and White Fantasy, a number from China, which won the Golden Clown in Monte Carlo this year. This act has united superhuman feats with touching beauty.

This “World Christmas Circus” is actually a Golden Clown festival. Together with Black and White Fantasy, the horse number by Florian and Edith Richter was also awarded with the prestigious circus award, just like the fascinating Pas de Deux from North Korea and the Flying Girls: a grand flying trapeze whereby all the jumps are performed by women. There are also two Silver Clown winners in this year’s program: Rosi Hochegger with her comic ‘sleep horse’ Scout and upbeat dog number, and the world’s biggest Icarian games with 19 acrobats from China.

Comedic clowns-act Starbugs and springboard number Baskultoo both won gold at festival Cirque de Demain in Paris. Russian aerialist Anastasia Makeeva was awarded the title of Best Russian Artist (female) of the year. In short, this year’s “World Christmas Circus” unites the best of the best in one program, that certainly lives up to its name! Book your tickets online now at www.carre.nl or call 0900-2525255 (45cpm).

DID YOU KNOW THAT: Amsterdammers also call their city Mokum? Amsterdam was originally built on piles? You can more or less deduce from the gables how old a canalside house is? Amsterdam has more canals and bridges than Venice? The Amsterdam ring of canals has been on the UNESCO world heritage list since 2010?

City of Amsterdam Where to begin? That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you the Amsterdam Journal has divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. Each area has its own character. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown (referring to the dark wood interiors) pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands (Museumkwartier – Museum Quarter), large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops (Centrum (Centre), de Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)

JORDAAN

The Amsterdam district called Jordaan is undoubtedly the most sung about, described and, frankly, romanticized town district of the Netherlands. Although it started as a district for the poor, today it is a favourite residency of students, artists and young professionals. These new inhabitants of the Jordaan, together with the people from the early days, made this neighbourhood a pleasant place to live with a mixture of all kinds of styles and activities.

TIPS! • Do you want to visit the Anne Frank House (Prinsengracht 267)? Be there on time and prepare for serious waiting times. • Find Dutch conviviality in one of the over 60 (brown) cafés in the Jordaan. • Visit the fabric market (Lapjesmarkt) on the Noordermarkt: Mondays 8.00 – 14.00 hours. • Feel like going on a shopping spree? At the edge of the Jordaan you will find the Haarlemmerstraat and the Haarlemmerdijk with many contemporary and unique and edgy clothes shops.

ARTIST KEREN DE VREEDE MODERN ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM

Art in the Jordaan There are many little galleries in Amsterdam, but in 2012 a new gallery opened its doors. This gallery has brought color and joy to the mix of art being offered around the Jordaan area. Already named best new coming gallery by the UK Guardian, Keren de Vreede Art Gallery with it’s magnificent works of art is definitely worth a visit. Hands on Keren de Vreede paints with merely her hands and lives her art. Bright colors, thick paint and bold and daring lines are the characteristics of her paintings. They reflect her passion for life, her positive outlook and her bright personality. A self-taught artist who discovered the desire to paint in her early years. Having used all kind of materials in the past, she prefers acrylic paint to express her creativity and achieve the result she is looking for. Instead of using the traditional easel, she positions her canvas on the floor. Her style can be described as modern abstract expressionism. Her paintings have been bought by art lovers and collectors from all over the world.

Gallery When visiting Amsterdam, weave your way down to the Prinsengracht, and make sure you visit Keren de Vreede’s Art Gallery, where the local artist is happy to chat about her textural floral canvases. Her paintings are not only very beautiful, they are also truly exceptional. Every painting is unique and impossible to replicate, even by Keren herself.

‹‹ This charming working class area is hot! Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. In the past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. Authentic working class area

Pubs/Bars and shops

The real pub life

You can wander around through the streets and side streets in a relaxed way and enjoy the spontaneous and relaxed atmosphere. You can experience the typical atmosphere of the Jordaan, in streets like Westerstraat, Tweede Anjeliersdwarsstraat, Tweede Tuindwarsstraat and around the Noordermarkt. On Saturdays you will find the best organic farmer’s market of Amsterdam on the Noordermarkt, directly opposite the Noorderkerk (Noorder church).

When you walk from the Noorderkerk to the Westerkerk (Western church) – the recogni zable church that has a blue-red crown on its tower - , you will automatically get to the Westermarkt. Here you will find the monument for gay people (1987), consisting of three large pink granite triangles. From here you can go straight onto Rozengracht (Rozen canal). This shopping street is very well-liked because of its diversity of nice shops.

‘Gezellig. This Dutch word – that can barely be translated properly -, applies perfectly to the typical (brown) pubs in the Jordaan. The atmosphere is easy-going, the people are spontaneous and speak with a very broad Amsterdam accent. You will regularly hear the sound of original Dutch music. ■

Anne Frank house Also not far from the Westerkerk, you can take a look in the Anne Frank’s Achterhuis. Behind a closet that turns out to be a door, you will find the small house where she wrote in her diary. Very oppressive.

full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. Not far behind Dam Square, between the well-known ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. Pleasant, unique and bold I n former times the workshops of craftsmen could be found in Reestraat, Berenstraat, Runstraat, Hartenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Huidenstraat, Gasthuismolensteeg, Oude Spiegelstraat and Wijde Heisteeg. Nowadays the small streets are full of specialist shops. I f you want to snap up something special, you are bound to be successful here. C ontrary to the large shops in the city centre, nothing is standard here. E xcept the more easy-going atmosphere and the great amount of creativity.

Vintage, chic, second-hand and everything in between The collections of the shops show that the owners are passionate enthusiasts. M any of them have made their hobby their job. I f you love clothes with just something special, you can indulge yourself in the more than fifty clothes shops. No sameness here, but mainly colourful, chic, trendy, exciting, vintage or second-hand clothes. The second-hand shops in the Nine Streets are famous for vintage, chic and second-hand clothes in Amsterdam by the way.

TIPS!

Unlike anything else

• On de9straatjes.nl/uk/ you can see the amount of specialised shops

All the shops really show sincere interests: shoe shops with unusual collections, a sock shop for men, specialised bookshops, a cheese shop with hundreds of different types of cheeses and have you ever seen a White Teeth shop before? ■

• Most shops in the Nine Streets are also open on Sundays, after 12.00 hours. • There are various small cafés in the Nine Streets that sell healthy sandwiches, smoothies, cheesecake and other goodies.

A uniq ue characteristic of the nine streets is that you will not find any chain stores here; in fact almost all of the stores in the nine streets are speciality stores of some kind. From cheese to chocolates, fancy dress to second-hand clothing, antique s to art deco, tearooms and lunchrooms to bars; kitsch, retro and loungy are all represented in these nine unique and distinctive streets. “ The whole world is built around Amsterdam” wrote the world famous in Holland poet Joost van den Vondel in the seventeenth century. This century - being the Dutch Golden Age - was for Amsterdam a previously unexperienced period of prosperity. People came to the city for business or a decent living. The old town area became too small, so an extension was inevitable and three new main canals were dug out: Heren-, K eizers- and Prinsengracht. Between them cross-canals and -streets. The q uarter of ‘9 Streets’ was constructed in the first half of the 17th century and was from the beginning until now dominated by trade and culture. The names of the streets remind us of the old artisans dealing with all kinds of skins

AJ_5715_binnenwerk_10.indd 16

for the leather-industry. The area permits a general view of the architecture of all kinds of houses. Among these houses are the beautiful Vingboon-Houses and the building ‘F elix Meritis’. The Felix Meritis-building dates from 1787. It was ordered by the Felix MeritisSociety. This society was guided by the enlightenment and the ideals of those days. In this building the first Amsterdam (oval) concert-hall was constructed. By means of concerts, lessons and tests the public was actively involved. With a short intermission it has always cleared the way for cultural purposes. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was heard in the no longer exisiting municipal theater on the K eizersgracht. On the Herengracht you’ll find the Biblical Museum. The collection is qui te diverse with in its heart the Book itself (the oldest dating from 1477), an important number of temple models, archeological finds from Egypt and so on.

ter of the ‘9 Streets’ is the Royal Palace, the former Town Hall, built in 1648, the Westerkerk where Rembrandt was buried and the Anne Frank House in which the Frank family was hiding from l942 until l944. Here Anne wrote her famous diary. Visit us and find for yourself that our ‘9 Streets’ are an ideal framework to explore Amsterdam in all it’s facets and richness. Moreover you’ll have the experience that our qua rter itself is an exclusive shopping area with an unmatched range of shops, studios, restaurants and hotels. ■

The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) are located in the heart of Amsterdam, in a part of the old city centre. Here you can both feel and see the history of Amsterdam. The nine streets are unique for their diversity and history but at the same time have managed to incorporate the splendour of the past with a taste of the present.

MUSEUM KWARTIER

See the masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with your own eyes. There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes. Where to begin? Rijksmuseum (National Museum) I n this impressive monumental building dating from 1885 you will find the famous masterpieces of Dutch and Flemish painters from the fifteenth up to and including the nineteenth century. Here you will also find Rembrandt’s world-famous Night Watch (16 5 0 ). Other masters to be found here are: Jan Steen, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer. After a long renovation project the Rijksmuseum has been open again completely since April.

Van Gogh Museum When you walk through this museum you clearly see how this painter developed. As sombre as the paintings are that he made in the Netherlands, so colourful and vivid are the works that he made on French soil. You will also find works of contemporaries like M onet and Gauguin in the museum.

Stedelijk Museum (Municipal Museum) The Stedelijk M useum, established in 1874 , has a large collection of classical, modern and contemporary art. The museum owns about 90 .0 0 0 objects from practically all important 2 0 th and 2 1st century schools.

Concertgebouw (Concert building)

TIPS! • If you don’t like waiting, you just order your Museum tickets online. • During the concert season (mid-September to the end of June) a free lunch concert is given in the Concertgebouw on Wednesdays: between 12.00 and 12.30 hours.

I n 1888 the first concert took place in this famous C oncert building. The acoustics in the building are extraordinary. I n 2 0 13 the C oncertgebouw is celebrating its 12 5 th anniversary. E very month of the Jubilee year a different period from the history of the C oncertgebouw are central.

Browsing around in antique shops Together with the adjacent Nieuwe Spiegelstraat, Spiegelgracht (opposite the Rijksmuseum) makes up the heart of the Spiegelkwartier; an area with many antiq ue shops and galleries. ■

• High Society shopping: parallel to Museumplein you will find the most stylish and most expensive shopping street of the Netherlands: P.C. Hooftstraat. • Diamond lovers visit the Diamond Museum Amsterdam (Paulus Potterstraat, opposite Museumplein) 20 amsterdamjournal.nl

OLD TOWN

Visit the oldest streets of Amsterdam. Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. Although not appreciated by everyone, a tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. The Zeedijk and China Town C lose to C entral station you will find one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam: the Z eedijk. The place is swarming with restaurants, café s and I ndonesian shops (tokos). The Z eedijk is the centre of C hina Town; the P eking ducks hang behind the windows and a large Buddhist temple colours the street scene. From midday you will increasingly smell aromas that make your mouth water. P ull up a chair in one of the smaller C hinese restaurants. This is where C hinese Amsterdammers (or Amsterdam C hinese) eat too. I s there a line somewhere? Then the wait is very probably highly worthwhile!

Red light district The Red L ight district covers the area between Z eedijk and Warmoesstraat. As soon as dusk falls and the shining red light greets you, the atmosphere is loose and laid back here. The ladies behind the windows wink playfully are friendly and wave to the merry passers-by. Do you want to get your breath back for a moment from all the impressions? There are plenty of pubs to recover while enjoying a beer.

Oude Kerksplein (Old Church Square) The Oude K erksplein is special place in the heart of the Red L ight district. The 14 th century church is the oldest building still standing in Amsterdam. There’s a bronze statue on the sq uare in honour of the prostitutes who have been active in this area for centuries. This lady is called ‘Belle’.

Cannabis College Amsterdam

TIPS! • Try turning onto Spooksteeg from Zeedijk and cross the bridge for a fantastic ‘keyhole’ view of Amsterdam

The C annabis C ollege offers free advice on safe recreational C annabis use in addition to educating the public about the many uses of the hemp plant. Guided tours of our C annabis garden allow us to bring our information to life with a beautiful, completely bio-organic example of indoor growing. ■

• There is lots to see and do around Zeedijk too. There are some great Asian stores on Geldersekade and Nieuwmarkt is bursting with life. • Short on time? Zeedijk is an ideal place to start and end a day in Amsterdam. • The Chinese temple is free to visit and is open every day. 22 amsterdamjournal.nl

Zeedijk used to be right at the heart of Amsterdam’s port area. Sailors would come here to find a bed for the night, food, drink, company and other amusement. Today’s travellers and tourists also enjoy spending a day on Zeedijk. And who can blame them? With its unusual shops, great eateries, nightlife and, of course, Chinatown, there’s always something to experience! Zeedijk is absolutely part of Amsterdam’s historic centre. One place where you can get a sense of that lively history is Zeedijk 1, in café In ’t Aepjen. This wooden building dates back to 1544 and supposedly inspired a well-known Dutch saying, ‘In de aap gelogeerd zijn’, which means to be staying at the aap or, less literally, to be up the creek without a paddle. Another ‘brown café’ with its own story is Het Mandje, Amsterdam’s very first gay bar.

Chinatown In the 1950s, Amsterdam’s Chinese population began to settle on and around Zeedijk in numbers. The first Chinese were brought to Amsterdam in 1911 as cheap labour. Forced by the economic crisis of the 1930s and the arrival of motorised ships, they went looking for other sources of income. Amsterdam’s Chinatown owes its Chinese specialist stores, Chinese health shops and authentic Chinese kitchens to these developments. Plus, of course, there is its splendid Chinese Buddhist temple.

A neighbourhood with personality The 1970s and ’80s were turbulent times for Zeedijk. The port activities had shifted to the west of Amsterdam and the neighbourhood was now swamped with heroin dealers. It was even officially declared an emergency area. These days, there is no sign of that anymore. On the contrary! Thanks to the fact that local people tackled its problems together, Zeedijk has developed into a particularly pleasant street with a real sense of solidarity among business owners, residents and visitors, many of whom are regulars.

Eating and drinking Each one of the cafés, lunchrooms, tearooms and restaurants has something special about it, in terms of both the interiors and the menus: if you like personal, small-scale, homemade and fresh from the oven food, you’ll find it hard to make a choice. Fortunately, Zeedijk is open for business from breakfast to dinner and from high tea to dessert. Night owls, too,

are well catered for: the nightclubs and cafés keep their doors open until the early hours.

Something to see everywhere The shops all have their own look and stories too. This makes a Zeedijk a miniature heaven for lovers of craftsmanship, collectors of special products and everyone who enjoys feasting their eyes. It is a case of taking your time and keeping your eyes open as you stroll around, otherwise you will miss a lot. Those who do this will be rewarded by the many specialist shops offering everything from designer toys, special underwear and cool trainers to fetish clothing, comic books from all over the world and designer fashion. You have been warned: the risk of ‘system overload’ is ever present!

Artist Mark Raven

and his Contemporary City Impressions

Text: Sarah Saarberg

It is obvious that the artist Mark Raven loves his birthplace by each and every work he has made of Amsterdam. This city never ceases to captivate and inspire him. Mark’s work is modern and wayward, but is unmistakably connected to this versatile and interesting capitol of ours. If Marks Raven’s father had had his way, Mark would have become a journalist. At the time, he followed his advice and went to the school for journalism. But he clearly was destined for other things. The artist explains his chosen medium: “The image, as means of communication, is far more appealing to me than text. Moreover, an image is universal. Everyone understands it.” And so, Mark installed himself as a street artist on a rug in the tunnel underneath the Rijksmuseum to capture the city in every way. “I love the city. But I love people too. I immediately want to show them what I make.”

Kiosk on Museumplein Mark’s work was liked right from the beginning. So much even, that the city council helped him to a studio right on the Museumplein in the form of a rebuild flower stall. Mark wanted his art to be accessible for everyone, and so he began to print t-shirts and posters with his work. “I would like it if everyone could enjoy my view of Amsterdam,” he simply says.

in the tradition of Rembrandt’s etchings and M.C. Escher’s graphic work, but gradually generated his modern touch. Mark combines traditional etching techniques with painting and modern graphic and digital techniques. All in a style that appeals to a lot of people. And not just tourists. Many Amsterdammers have a Mark Raven hanging on their wall.

Accessible for every budget Nowadays, Mark Raven is located at the renowned shoppingstreet of Amsterdam the “Leidsestraat” near the “Leidseplein” and he has a gallery slash shop on Nieuwe-zijds Voorburgwal, a fabulous location right behind Dam square next to Magna Plaza. On the ground floor you can buy t-shirts, posters, postcards and other articles, all with the recognizable Mark Raven art. Upstairs, you can find original prints, some printed in a limited edition, others not. This is for the reason that, despite his enormous success, Mark Raven wants to be attainable for every budget. “My boxes with coasters are very popular with backpackers. I like that: in this way, my view on Amsterdam will spread all around the world.”

››The architecture of Amsterdam in the future. In the past fifty years A msterdam’ s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. A s a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of A msterdam in the future. A rchitecture and urban design Present and past have been brought together in the architecture and the urban design of the Docklands. The harbour feeling is still alive, but old warehouses have been given new functions and the diverging designs of various artists link up with each other perfectly. Admire the special houses on KNSM island, walk across the whole Java island via the pedestrian bridges and take a look at the Whale (or Sphinx) on the Sporenbrug on Borneo island. IJburg is absolutely worth a visit for architectural buffs. The urban design scheme here is based on the ‘collage city concept’. The island consists of 8 neighbourhoods, each of which has its own individual character.

G oing out and music The Docklands attract many artistic people, so it comes as no surprise that when it comes to culture and going out there is plenty to do here. It’s mainly about contemporary classical music in the Music Building (Muziekgebouw) on IJ lake (a ten-minute walk from the back of the Central Station). The Bim house (Bim huis), that protrudes on the street side of the Music Building is a concert hall for jazz and improvised music. When you cross the IJ with the Ferry (Pont) from the back of the railway station, you get to another striking building: the Netherlands EYE Film Institute. The collection of the EYE comprises the complete film history.

Barbara Hepworth in Kröller-Müller: a must see! 28.11.2015 – 17.04.2016 Still from Figures in landscape, 1953, director Dudley Shaw Ashton, BFI National Archive

The Kröller-Müller Museum honours Barbara Hepworth (Wakefield 1903-St Ives 1975) with a major retrospective, fifty years after her last major exhibition in 1965. Barbara Hepworth is one of the most successful sculptors of the twentieth century. Barbara Hepworth: Sculpture for a Modern World follows Hepworth’s career, from the stone sculptures of her early years to her later, celebrated bronze pieces. The exhibition includes exceptional, never previously shown works, such as fabric designs, drawings, collages and photograms. Extensive film and photographic material from Hepworth’s personal archive shows the context in which her work was created. The long and special relationship between the Kröller-Müller Museum and Barbara Hepworth is visible to this day in the Rietveld pavilion in the sculpture garden. Hepworth selected eight of her sculptures especially for this famous pavilion by architect Gerrit Rietveld. The pavilion is part of the exhibition as an ‘outdoor gallery’.

Barbara Hepworth, Squares with two circles, 1963 – 1964, Kröller-Müller Museum

A paradise for art lovers The Kröller-Müller Museum is a place where things of beauty come together. The unique combination of art, nature and architecture guarantees visitors a truly unforgettable experience. An experience that arouses all the senses. The museum is a paradise for both seasoned art lovers and objective newcomers. With almost 400,000 visitors a year, the Kröller-Müller Museum is one of the most popular museums in the Netherlands. 25-hectare outdoor gallery The museum is set in one of Europe’s largest sculpture gardens. An outdoor gallery covering 25 hectares, in which modern sculptures blend into the natural background. What’s the best time to visit Amsterdam and its green backyard De Veluwe? That depends of course on what you’re looking for. Springtime is bright and colourful in Amsterdam. In summer it buzzes with all sorts of outdoors activities and festivals. In autumn or winter, as the leaves are blown from the trees, Amsterdam’s beautiful gables reappear in their full glory from behind the foliage.

Over 200 anatomical specimens of real human bodies reveal the complexity, resilience and vulnerability of the body..

TILL 24 JANUARY 2016 It will show how Amsterdam graffiti artists (‘ writers’) like Shoe and Delta were infl uenced by American artists like Lee Q uiñ ones, Dondi and Rammellzee in the 1980s. The 1970s, being the time when Dr. Rat and Hugo K aagman were active in the city. It will use historic visual material and objects like denim jackets and black books to chart the development of graffiti from a street phenomenon to an accepted artistic movement. It will also shed light on the difference between graffiti and street art. The exhibition will show how a young generation was able to change the street scene 30 years ago. Their infl uence is still very much evident today, in music, fashion and contemporary visual culture.

TILL 7 FEBRUARY Art Treasures from the Eternal City. Loaned by institutions such as the Vatican Museums these will illustrate one of the most fascinating themes from antiq uity: the transformation of Rome in the fourth century AD from a multi-religious imperial capital full of temples with colossal statues of the emperor into the centre of papal power dominated by churches with crosses. Christianity’s evolution in a relatively short time from a small faith community into the dominant religion, of crucial infl uence on the development of the Western world, is an astonishing success story. A rapid change in its fortunes that can largely be attributed to a single person: Emperor Constantine the Great.

TILL 17 JANUARY The exhibition When I Give, I Give Myself features 23 national and international contemporary artists and writers who have all created artworks in response to specific sections from letters by Vincent van Gogh. Their paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, letters, poems, photos and videos show how Van Gogh is still a source of inspiration until this very day, 125 years since his death, and that his ideas are still relevant. The works will be exhibited in combination with Van Gogh’s paintings, drawings and letters from the permanent collection of the Van Gogh Museum.

13 MARCH On 16 October The Sixties A Worldwide Happening exhibition opens in the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam. The exhibition offers a global view of the 1960s, an era when globalization as we know it first appeared. Visitors will be surprised by the trans-border connections which have never been presented in this way before.

TILL 29 MAY 2016 With more than sixty superior paintings and a rich collection of graphic works and applied arts masterpieces. Never before has the Netherlands hosted such a comprehensive survey of Spanish art, with work that is hardly represented in Dutch museum collections. The exhibition features masterpieces such as The Apostles Peter and Paul by El Greco, Velá zq uez’s Portrait of the Count Duke of Olivares, Murillo’sImmaculate Conception and Goya’s Portrait of the Actress Antonia Zá rate, in addition to paintings by their pupils and later painters, up and including Picasso. Together they tell the story of the rise and glory of Spanish art in the Golden Age, which would continue to infl uence art into modern times..

12 FEB TILL 16 MAY 2016 An exhibition about drawing nude models in Rembrandt’s time. Based on new research, Rembrandt’s Naked Truth features seventeenth-century nude studies that have never before been brought together in such large numbers. It will be the first time that Rembrandt’s frank approach to drawing nudes will be examined in depth and brought to the notice of a wide audience.

TILL 6 MARCH 2016 By 2050, 70% of the world’s population – more than seven billion people – will be living in crowded cities, according to the U N. Many will be living in ‘ megacities’, which the U N defines as cities having more than 10 million inhabitants. Martin Roemers (1962, Oldehove) wondered how people actually lived in such immense and bustling cities, and in 2007 he started travelling all over the world to photograph them. Of the 28 megacities in the world today Roemers has so far photographed 22, across five continents, which together form a representative image of ‘ the megacity’. And what an image it is! Roemers succeeds in capturing the uniq ue dynamism of each of these cities in a single photograph.

Rembrandt’s Naked Truth will showcase more than fifty objects from a number of European and American public and private collections, augmented by a selection of Rembrandt’s etchings from the Rembrandt House’s collection. The drawings, prints and paintings are extremely rare.

26 MARCH Last century, late fifties. In large parts of America black and white people live segregated lives, but in Carnegie Hall, New York the white elite comes to see a black singer in concert: Billie Holiday. Just before midnight she prepares for what already promises to be a legendary performance. The celebrated star is one of the most infl uential jazz singers ever, but she can barely hold on in a world full of Mr Wrongs, racism and drugs. Led by hits such as ‘ Strange Fruit’, ‘ Them There Eyes’ and ‘ End of the Affair’ we see Billie with all of her ups and fathomlessly deep downs and how she always managed to hang onto the greatest good in her life, which was music

12 TILL 14 FEBRUARY This edition will take place in the Rhone Congress & Party Centre in Amsterdam West, near to Sloterdijk Station. This venue, with a 2500+ capacity is a perfect location to host the various workshops, shows and parties all weekend. A big advantage is the proximity of Schiphol, three big hotels at walking distance, good accessibility by public transport and free parking during the weekend. Major headliner this year are Tropical Gem and Adolfo Indacochea from Italy. Tropical Gem has been salsa’s number one group for the last 15 years and Adolfo Indacochea is considered the master of New York On2 salsa.

23 TILL 24 JANUARY The Amsterdams Bach Consort will perform the program: “ Stabat Mater” – Bach in Italy. Tilge, Hö chster, meine Sü nden, BWV 1083 (“ Cancel, Highest my Sins” ), is Bach’s arrangement of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater. Bach used psalm 51 as text for his composition, slightly expanding the orchestral material. Emanuele d’Astorga was one of the most colourful figures in early eighteenth-century music. His most enduring work is his 9 movement Stabat mater. Tinged with melancholy, it features ornate solos, duets, and trios interspersed between beautiful imitative moments for full chorus.

22 JANUARY As musical director of James Brown’s band the JB’s, trombonist Fred Wesley was the most famous ‘ sideman’ of the sixties and seventies. He arranged all James Brown songs, wrote hits like ‘ Hot Pants’ and ‘ Doing it to Death (We’re Gonna Have A Funky Good Time)’ and became known as one of the architects of funk music. Decades after his work with James Brown and George Clinton, Fred Wesley has started a new project taking him back to his jazz-roots: Generations. Generations is a jazz trio represented by three generations of jazz musicians: Fred Wesley (70), French drummer Tony Match (42) and young Italian organist Leonardo Corradi (21).

Amsterdam Metropolitan Area

The AMA lies to the north of the Randstad and encompasses the city of Amsterdam and the Dutch provinces of North Holland and Flevoland. The area has a totalpopulation of over 2 million inhabitants. The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (AMA) is comprised of several surrounding municipalities, including the cities of Amsterdam, Almere, Amstelveen and Haarlemmermeer, Hilversum and Velsen. Flowers of Amsterdam: The Flower Strip is one of the most popular and uniq ue sights in the Netherlands. Every spring the entire region bursts into vivid colour as bulbs shoot and millions of fl owers blossom. One of the biggest attractions is the K eukenhof Gardens, the world’s largest fl ower gardens and a home to more varieties of tulip than you can imagine.

Old Holland With its countless windmills, churches and old-fashioned farmhouses, stepping out into Old Holland can feel like being in a Golden Age painting. Traditionally Dutch: Noord-Holland towns such as Marken, Volendam and Edam hark back to times of more honest crafts, show

casing the traditional skills the region was famous for: shipbuilding, fishing and cheese making. Alongside such classic industries, you can also experience the heritage of the industrial revolution – a time when smoking chimney stacks and spinning sails enabled the mass production of chocolate and biscuits.

Castles & Gardens The countryside of Noord-Holland was always a popular region for the rich merchants of the Golden Age. Each summer they would leave their primary residence in the heart of Amsterdam, retreating to extravagant castles and estates with acres of beautifully manicured gardens.

Amsterdam Beach When the temperatures soar in Amsterdam, sun-seekers fl ock to the beaches at Bloemendaal and Zandvoort to bask on the sands and soak up the vibrant nightlife.

New Land Although famous for its historic city centre, the Amsterdam region is always evolving as new immigrants and diverse cultures make their mark on many neighbourhoods. But probably the most dramatic changes have taken place in the province of Flevoland.

Hit the beach in Holland Sandy shores and sunbathers may not be the first things that spring to mind when you think of Amsterdam, but a short distance away from the canals and cobbles of Amsterdam city centre lies one of the most unspoilt coastlines in Northern Europe. Summer months see the towns of Zandvoort and Bloemandaal buzz with throngs of party goers and sun-worshippers who come to enjoy themselves at the many vibrant beach clubs, which range from chic restaurants to colourful bohemian bars with DJs and campfires. Check out our insider guide to some of the best beach hotspots in Zandvoort and Bloemendaal if you’re in need of tips for your next trip to the beach! Sun, sea and surfing near Amsterdam

Architecture & nature Just north east of Amsterdam, these polders were reclaimed from the sea, giving birth to the new cities of Almere and Lelystad. Not only are they internationally acclaimed playgrounds for architecture and design, they are also blessed with expanses of wild nature on the doorstep.

The Amsterdam coast is also a haven of wind water sports, and thrill seekers fl ock from far and wide to enjoy everything from kite surfing to blokarting on the vast expanses of sand and sea. You can find out more about the sports on offer at Amsterdam beach in this wind water sports top five. Away from the shore you’ll find even more

History meets nature Both north west of Amsterdam, and south east, on the banks of the River Amstel and River Vecht, you can still bike and boat past these historic houses. Some are open to the public while others leave you dreaming of an aristocratic life by the water.

ways to get active in the protected dunes, which are a haven for nature lovers and offer the perfect terrain for an invigorating bike ride or hike through the ever-changing landscape. Authentic Haarlem. A city of remarkable history and culture, Haarlem is just a short hop from Amsterdam but packs a uniq ue punch. With spectacular monuments dating back almost 800 years, such as the Amsterdamse Poort and SintBavokerk, it’s no wonder that so many great artists of the Golden Age wanted to capture its beauty and atmosphere. Frans Hals, one of the Netherlands’ greatest painters, is celebrated in theFrans Hals Museum (alongside paintings by his peers). Of course, Haarlem has made an impact in more recent times too. Its Jugendstil train station is one of the most beautiful in the country and the city is a bustling hub of great café s, shops and restaurants.

You will not find any chain stores here.

Wayward exhibition on “De Maakbare Mens” (Manmade Man) in the Dolhuys Museum Schotersingel 2 | 2021 GE Haarlem info@hetdolhuys.nl | www.hetdolhuys.nl Ever met a perfect person? So… how was it? The Dolhuys, museum of the mind, presents their new exhibition “De Maakbare Mens” (Manmade Man’) with this slogan. The museum puts artificiality up for discussion in a unique way. The jubilee exhibition is designed by design agency Kossmann.dejong and can be seen until the end of 2016. Many Dutch people want to be perfect nowadays. We strive for a healthy spirit, impeccable behavior and a perfect body. We collectively post an ideal image of ourselves on Facebook every day, but can we always continue to meet these high standards? People who cannot, are excluded. The “imperfect” do not belong, are insane, limited, scary, pathetic or unwell. But to be truly successful, think of artists and scientists, should you not deviate from the norm?

The visitor comes face-to-face with their own “artificiality” with a selfie. They will meet a wide range of special minds, including the successful writer Myrthe van der Meer, the artists Edvard Munch, Vincent van Gogh, Willem van Genk and Anton Heijboer. On the basis of works of art, films and photography the audience will get a glimpse into their mind. In an audiovisual presentation based on quotes from letters of Munch and Van Gogh and visual clips of their work, both artists talk about the link between their mental illness and their artistry. Van Gogh spent some time in a psychiatric facility. Munch did not think of himself as ill, but saw his fear as the basis for his art.

In the early seventeenth century painting underwent a radical change, and the foundations for this were laid in Haarlem. The Frans Hals Museum’s collection, which encompasses the entire spectrum of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century painting, reflects this revolutionary change.

Established in 1778, Teylers Museum was originally founded as a centre for contemporary art and science. The historic centre of the museum is the neoclassical Oval Room, which was built behind the house of Pieter Teyler van der Hulst, the socalled Foundation House.

The home of Corrie ten Boom is now a museum! It is perfectly situated in the center of the beautiful old city of Haarlem, Holland. Much of the house has been refurbished to appear as it did in the 1940’s.

Just as seventeenth-century Haarlem offered fertile soil in which an innovative urge expressed in art could grow and flourish, so today De Hallen Haarlem aims to provide a platform for developments in contemporary art, based on the same open and proactive attitude.

It is Nikkie Plessen’s eye for detail which makes every NIKKIE collection strong, elegant and distinctly Dutch. Nikkie started designing a small fashion collection that reflected her personal feminine, sexy and edgy style. Right now NIKKIE is distributed and sold in over 15 countries.

SuperTrash was founded by fashion entrepreneur Olcay Gulsen in 2004 with a mission to bridge the gap between High Street and luxury labels. Olcay envisioned creating a strong lifestyle brand that would empower woman across the World; a brand that would make affordable luxury a reality.

Volendam is the most remarkable picturesque fishing village

just some 10-15 miles from Amsterdam. It dates from the era when the, now lake, IJsselmeer still was a part of the North

Sea. In Volendam, if you’re lucky, you will see people in traditi-

onal costumes. As a result of its insulated location, the village preserved its character for six centuries, also because of the tough vitality of the fishermen. The characteristic small houses, which together with the canals and the drawbridges form

the most picturesque spots, present the visitor an atmosphere of geniality and romance.

History and Fame The name Volendam stems from Vol-ent-dam, which means as much as the finishing of a dam. Volendam is located on the site of the former (way back in 1357) harbour of the historic city of Edam. As Edam started a new harbour, the old one formed a new settlement, and got the name Volendam. The population of the town grew only very slowly during those first centuries of its existence. In 1462 it only had 25 inhabitants, whereas today some 19,000. Around 1875, Volendam became known as a town worth visiting by tourists, and was thusly immortalized by writers and artists. Volendam became written about both nationally and internatio-nally, and magazines published photographs of stalwart fishermen by the harbour, of the women in their graceful traditional dress and of children playing in front of picturesq ue houses. The rich and famous fl ocked to this humble fishing town, where it seemed as if time had stood still.

Volendam became an artist’s paradise, with people in graceful traditional costumes, the wooden little houses built closely together against, protected from the sea by the sturdy dike; their interiors replete with statuettes of saints and the harbour crowded with hundreds of redsailed ‘botters’ (fishing boats). Some elements of this are now of the past (the herring fishery was finished when the sea was closed off), but if you are curious about how the Volendam costume was worn and what the interiors of the houses looked like, do visit the Volendammer Museum to experience a little of the Volendam of yesteryear.

The Costume The costumes of Volendam are worldrenowned. Around the entire world you can see portraits of people who have had themselves photographed in Volendam costume at the time of their visit to the place. The most famous part of the Dutch costume is of course the wooden shoes or “clogs”. The clog has gone a little bit out of fashion these days, but you can still occasionally see people walk around on them. Getting There There are several ways to visit the town. Probably the easiest way will be the booking of a daytrip by a tour operator. I’m sure the genitor of your hotel will be able to help you with this. ■

In ‘My Year in Food’ Andrew Zimmern from Sky’s Gourmet on the Groud, mensions Pavilion Smit Bokkum (Volendam) in his top 10 experiences. “Jan Smit is a fifthgeneration smokehouse artisan, and his smoked wild eels are becoming scarcer every year. The fat absorbs the smoke, and eating them warm from the oven may have been my best bite of food this year. There’s also his nieuwe haring (“new herring”) dipped in brine, boned and eaten whole; there’s nothing else like it for any seafood lover.”

Origin of Traditional Quality

Excellence on the IJsselmeer a benchmark for Volendam’s tradition and quality Paviljoen Smit-Bokkum is the home of an eel smoke-house since 1856, where the 5th generation of the Smit-Bokkum family daily smokes Holland’s best fish, preserving the ancient family recipe. The Smit-Bokkum family restaurant next to the smokehouse serves home-smoked delicacies together with a selection of local traditional menus. Especially the famous home-smoked IJsselmeer eels daily draws a client base from all over the country. Smit-Bokkum’s lovely terrace offers seats for over 100 guests. Seated here you can take in the magnificent views of the IJsselmeer and the Marinapark harbour. TIP: A dinner or lunch at Smit-Bokkum can also be combined with a guided tour through the smoke-house and a visit to the Palingsoundmuseum above the restaurant.

Whatever your taste is, Amsterdam has it. Amsterdam has all the nightlife you would ex pect. There are intimate restaurants, ba rs with or without liv e music, h ip dance clubs , c omedy clubs , a nd a casino. A complete list would fi ll a whole book , s o we can only giv e you some recommendations here.

restaurants | cafés As one might expect from a cosmopolitan city, Amsterdam not only offers the possibility of enjoying classical French cuisine, but since a few decades the city has also abounded in - sometimes surprisingly good - Greek, Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese, Korean and even Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants. This fact has caused the extensive, daily public market in Albert Cuypstraat to adapt its range to the purchasing requirements of these restaurants. For a quick cheap lunchtime bite try the sandwich shops, the chips stands or herring stalls. Eating maatjes (‘mates’) herring is quite possibly the only important culinary tradition of our otherwise in this respect poorly endowed country. Amsterdam is also a city with many bars and cafés, some 1,500 in all. Each of the areas mentioned below has something to offer, from friendly and relaxed brown cafés, stylish grand cafés to crowded designer bars. The cafés and bars vary greatly and have their own special attraction: a wide range of beers, jenever (Dutch gin), live music, canal-side terraces, board games, pool tables or just good old fun.

bars | live music Amsterdam has some great small bars where you enter for free and or a small fee to listen to live music. Singer-songwriters, jazz, pop, folk or even classical music. You just have to know where to go.

cocktails | dinner The Venice of the North, Amsterdam’s attractions are considerable. Besides the famed red-light areas where window-shopping takes on a whole new meaning and the coffee bars that are more popular for their other wares, Amsterdam is also home to hundreds of great bars and clubs: style bars, cocktail bars, bistros, restaurants and casinos, and the famous brown cafes where you can linger long over a beer and watch the people of Amsterdam go about their business. Once you’ve visited the museum quarter and taken a tour of the canals, you can hit the town. A night out in the many bars of Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein should see you into the small hours.

Every weekend, the North Sea Jazz Club is the place to be to enjoy live music, dinner, drinks and dancing. In just three and a half years, the club has won its place as one of the leading venues in the Netherlands when it comes to quality music and variety of the program. Just like the world famous North Sea Jazz Festival, the club presents jazz, funk, soul, latin, blues and world music. Experience live concerts by top of the bill artists in an intimate New York style jazz club. Find established names within arm’s reach and discover up-and-coming talents. Furthermore, the North Sea Jazz Club is one of the only venues in Amsterdam where concerts are combined with a threecourse dinner, prepared for you by the chef. During the Christmas holidays, the club remains open for dinner concerts by soul singer and keyboardist Frank McComb on the 25th and the 26th of December. The day after, jazz pianist Peter Beets and singer Ruben Hein pay tribute to Frank Sinatra. On New Year’s Eve, Dutch saxophone player Benjamin Herman and talented vocalist Daniël von Piekartz get you in the mood for 2016 with their smooth and jazzy sounds.

Red light AN IMPRESSION ABOUT AMSTERDAMS ELDEST RED LIGHT DISTRICT The Red Light District in Amsterdam is visited by more than 4 million visitors each year who are curious to know what goes on behind the closed curtains. The Red Light District is very close to the Dam Square. Here Amsterdam started of as a settlement around a dam in the river Amstel at the end of the 12th century.

Changing the heart of Amsterdam

Let’s be honest

Visiting the Red Light District

Prostitution has enjoyed a long tradition of tolerance in Amsterdam. Safety is key here. In addition to preventing forced prostitution, the aim is an open and honest approach. Sex-workers here have their own union, plenty of police protection, an information centre (for visitors as well), frequent monitoring and testing and professional standards. The Amsterdam city centre has a romantic image. But behind the exciting, unconventional, ‘anything goes’ image of the city centre lurks a different reality -- a reality that sometimes consist of sex trafficking, forced prostitution. This is something that the city and the justice department are fighting against.

New opportunities are setting in place a future for the city centre. The Amsterdam municipal council’s1012 project aims to discourage crime and corruption in the city centre by reducing the types of businesses that are conducive to crime and by permitting prostitution in just two areas. Together with local residents, business proprietors and investors, the municipal council is working to strengthen the area’s unique character and stimulate an economic upgrade.

The area is bustling with visitors and groups of tourists. It is best to travel in a pair or in a group, as the area also attracts some seedier characters. Grab a map and venture out or if you’re keen to learn more take one of the many specialised tours. ■

As the years went by the curtains opened more and more.
