THE FAIR OF TODAY FOR ART, ANTIQUES AND DESIGN With many thousands of pieces of art there is plenty to see and discover at PAN Amsterdam, the most important Dutch fair for art, antiques and design. This year, for the twenty-ninth time, the fair is being staged from 22 to 29 November 2015 in the RAI in Amsterdam. PAN Amsterdam is the meeting place for collectors and other art lovers. Antiques, modern and contemporary art, old masters, art nouveau, sculptures, photography, jewellery, vintage design furniture, photographs, ceramics, glass and objects from old and distant cultures—you can find it all at PAN Amsterdam. PAN Amsterdam offers beauty, inspiration, enrichment and depth. Don’t miss it! The collections of 120 of the best Dutch art dealers, antique dealers and gallery owners from all art disciplines span 5,000 years of art history. Their objects are a reflection of the Dutch art market. In just a few hours you can look at and compare the works that they are offering for sale at the fair. The exhibitors at PAN Amsterdam are experts in their fields and will be delighted to talk to you. Prior to the fair more than eighty independent experts vet all the objects for authenticity, quality and condition. This is why you can be certain that you can buy the objects for sale at PAN Amsterdam with confidence. Prices range from € 500 to € 500,000. During your visit to PAN Amsterdam you can relax in the ambience of the brasserie, the oyster bar and the terrace, where you can enjoy live piano music. There are a variety of guided tours too. City of Amsterdam Where to begin? That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you the Amsterdam Journal has divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. Each area has its own character. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown (referring to the dark wood interiors) pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands (Museumkwartier – Museum Quarter), large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops (Centrum (Centre), de Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. The Amsterdam district called Jordaan is undoubtedly the most sung about, described and, frankly, romanticized town district of the Netherlands. Although it started as a district for the poor, today it is a favourite residency of students, artists and young professionals. These new inhabitants of the Jordaan, together with the people from the early days, made this neighbourhood a pleasant place to live with a mixture of all kinds of styles and activities.

‹‹ This charming working class area is hot! Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. In the past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. Anne Frank house
You can wander around through the streets and side streets in a relaxed way and enjoy the spontaneous and relaxed atmosphere. You can experience the typical atmosphere of the Jordaan, in streets like Westerstraat, Tweede Anjeliersdwarsstraat, Tweede Tuindwarsstraat and around the Noordermarkt. On Saturdays you will find the best organic farmer’s market of Amsterdam on the Noordermarkt, directly opposite the Noorderkerk (Noorder church).
Also not far from the Westerkerk, you can take a look in the Anne Frank’s Achterhuis. Behind a closet that turns out to be a door, you will find the small house where she wrote in her diary. Very oppressive.
Pubs/Bars and shops When you walk from the Noorderkerk to the Westerkerk (Western church) – the recogni zable church that has a blue-red crown on its tower - , you will automatically get to the Westermarkt. Here you will find the monument for gay people (1987), consisting of three large pink granite triangles. From here you can go straight onto Rozengracht (Rozen canal). This shopping street is very well-liked because of its diversity of nice shops.
The real pub life ‘Gezellig. This Dutch word – that can barely be translated properly -, applies perfectly to the typical (brown) pubs in the Jordaan. The atmosphere is easy-going, the people are spontaneous and speak with a very broad Amsterdam accent. You will regularly hear the sound of original Dutch music. ■
TIPS! • Do you want to visit the Anne Frank House (Prinsengracht 267)? Be there on time and prepare for serious waiting times. • Find Dutch conviviality in one of the over 60 (brown) cafés in the Jordaan. • Visit the fabric market (Lapjesmarkt) on the Noordermarkt: Mondays 8.00 – 14.00 hours. • Feel like going on a shopping spree? 9 STRAATJES Nine small streets
full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. Not far behind Dam Square, between the well-known ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. Pleasant, unique and bold I n former times the workshops of craftsmen could be found in Reestraat, Berenstraat, Runstraat, Hartenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Huidenstraat, Gasthuismolensteeg, Oude Spiegelstraat and Wijde Heisteeg. Nowadays the small streets are full of specialist shops. I f you want to snap up something special, you are bound to be successful here. C ontrary to the large shops in the city centre, nothing is standard here. E xcept the more easy-going atmosphere and the great amount of creativity.
Vintage, chic, second-hand and everything in between The collections of the shops show that the owners are passionate enthusiasts. M any of them have made their hobby their job. I f you love clothes with just something special, you can indulge yourself in the more than fifty clothes shops. No sameness here, but mainly colourful, chic, trendy, exciting, vintage or second-hand clothes. The second-hand shops in the Nine Streets are famous for vintage, chic and second-hand clothes in Amsterdam by the way.
Unlike anything else All the shops really show sincere interests: shoe shops with unusual collections, a sock shop for men, specialised bookshops, a cheese shop with hundreds of different types of cheeses and have you ever seen a White Teeth shop before? ■

A unique characteristic of the nine streets is that you will not find any chain stores here; in fact almost all of the stores in the nine streets are speciality stores of some kind. From cheese to chocolates, fancy dress to second-hand clothing, antiques to art deco, tearooms and lunchrooms to bars; kitsch, retro and loungy are all represented in these nine unique and distinctive streets. “ The whole world is built around Amsterdam” wrote the world famous in Ho lland poet J oost van den V ondel in the seventeenth century. This century - being the Dutch Golden Age - was for Amsterdam a previously unexperienced period of prosperity. People came to the city for business or a decent living. The old town area became too small, so an extension was inevitable and three new main canals were dug out: He ren-, K eiz ers- and Prinsengracht. Be tween them cross-canals and -streets. The quarter of ‘9 Streets’ was constructed in the first half of the 17t h century and was from the beginning until now dominated by trade and culture. The names of the streets remind us of the old artisans dealing with all kinds of skins
for the leather-industry. The area permits a general view of the architecture of all kinds of houses. Among these houses are the beautiful V ingboon-Ho uses and the building ‘F elix Me ritis’. The Felix Me ritis-building dates from 17 87. It was ordered by the Felix Me ritisSociety. This society was guided by the enlightenment and the ideals of those days. In this building the first Amsterdam ( oval) concert-hall was constructed. By means of concerts, lessons and tests the public was actively involved. With a short intermission it has always cleared the way for cultural purposes. Wolfgang Amadeus Mo za rt was heard in the no longer exisiting municipal theater on the K eize rsgracht. On the He rengracht you’ll find the Bi blical Mus eum. The collection is quite diverse with in its heart the Bo ok itself ( the oldest dating from 1477 ) , an important number of temple models, archeological finds from Egypt and so on.

See the masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with your own eyes. There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes. Where to begin? Rijksmuseum (National Museum) I n this impressive monumental building dating from 1885 you will find the famous masterpieces of Dutch and Flemish painters from the fifteenth up to and including the nineteenth century. Here you will also find Rembrandt’s world-famous Night Watch (16 5 0 ). Other masters to be found here are: Jan Steen, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer. After a long renovation project the Rijksmuseum has been open again completely since April.
Van Gogh Museum When you walk through this museum you clearly see how this painter developed. As sombre as the paintings are that he made in the Netherlands, so colourful and vivid are the works that he made on French soil. You will also find works of contemporaries like M onet and Gauguin in the museum.
Stedelijk Museum (Municipal Museum) The Stedelijk M useum, established in 1874 , has a large collection of classical, modern and contemporary art. The museum owns about 90 .0 0 0 objects from practically all important 2 0 th and 2 1st century schools.
Concertgebouw (Concert building)

Visit the oldest streets of Amsterdam. Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. Although not appreciated by everyone, a tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. The Zeedijk and China Town C lose to C entral station you will find one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam: the Z eedijk. The place is swarming with restaurants, café s and I ndonesian shops (tokos). The Z eedijk is the centre of C hina Town; the P eking ducks hang behind the windows and a large Buddhist temple colours the street scene. From midday you will increasingly smell aromas that make your mouth water. P ull up a chair in one of the smaller C hinese restaurants. This is where C hinese Amsterdammers (or Amsterdam C hinese) eat too. I s there a line somewhere? Then the wait is very probably highly worthwhile!
Red light district The Red L ight district covers the area between Z eedijk and Warmoesstraat. As soon as dusk falls and the shining red light greets you, the atmosphere is loose and laid back here. The ladies behind the windows wink playfully are friendly and wave to the merry passers-by. Do you want to get your breath back for a moment from all the impressions? There are plenty of pubs to recover while enjoying a beer.
Oude Kerksplein (Old Church Square) The Oude K erksplein is special place in the heart of the Red L ight district. The 14 th century church is the oldest building still standing in Amsterdam. There’s a bronze statue on the sq uare in honour of the prostitutes who have been active in this area for centuries. This lady is called ‘Belle’.

Reguliersdwarsstraat: gay and trendy A pub-crawl from Rembrandtplein will certainly also take you to Reguliersdwarsstraat. Here you will find the city’s most trendy gay entertainment places. and his Contemporary City Impressions

It is obvious that the artist Mark Raven loves his birthplace by each and every work he has made of Amsterdam. This city never ceases to captivate and inspire him. Mark’s work is modern and wayward, but is unmistakably connected to this versatile and interesting capitol of ours. If Marks Raven’s father had had his way, Mark would have become a journalist. At the time, he followed his advice and went to the school for journalism. But he clearly was destined for other things. The artist explains his chosen medium: “The image, as means of communication, is far more appealing to me than text. Moreover, an image is universal. Everyone understands it.” And so, Mark installed himself as a street artist on a rug in the tunnel underneath the Rijksmuseum to capture the city in every way. “I love the city. But I love people too. I immediately want to show them what I make.”
Kiosk on Museumplein Mark’s work was liked right from the beginning. So much even, that the city council helped him to a studio right on the Museumplein in the form of a rebuild flower stall. Mark wanted his art to be accessible for everyone, and so he began to print t-shirts and posters with his work. “I would like it if everyone could enjoy my view of Amsterdam,” he simply says.

Mark combines traditional etching techniques with painting and modern graphic and digital techniques. All in a style that appeals to a lot of people. And not just tourists. The harbour feeling is still alive, but old warehouses have been given new functions and the diverging designs of various artists link up with each other perfectly. Admire the special houses on KNSM island, walk across the whole Java island via the pedestrian bridges and take a look at the Whale (or Sphinx) on the Sporenbrug on Borneo island. IJburg is absolutely worth a visit for architectural buffs. The urban design scheme here is based on the ‘collage city concept’. The island consists of 8 neighbourhoods, each of which has its own individual character.

The Docklands attract many artistic people, so it comes as no surprise that when it comes to culture and going out there is plenty to do here. It’s mainly about contemporary classical music in the Music Building (Muziekgebouw) on IJ lake (a ten-minute walk from the back of the Central Station). The Bim house (Bim huis), that protrudes on the street side of the Music Building is a concert hall for jazz and improvised music. The campaign is the result of an exciting collaboration between the award-winning, B udapestbased artist and U nseen, a fair and festival embracing new photography. Over the past years, U nseen has established a tradition of inviting talented artists to create the annual U nseen campaign images. 3 TILL 4 OCTOBER Artists from the Nieuwmarktbuurt in Amsterdam open their private studios for one weekend every year. During this weekend they welcome visitors in their studio and show their art, their working space and working method( s) . This is an unique opportunity to get to know the historic inner city of Amsterdam more intimately and the artists which life and work there. Apart from the studios you can also visit the central exposition in the Z uiderkerk.
30 OCTOBER TILL 1 NOVEMBER The Tribal Art Fair ( TAF) now in its 13 th year will take place in De Duif in Amsterdam from the 3 0th October until 1st November. Twenty national and international galleries will exhibit masks, statues, jewellery, textiles and utensils from Africa, Oceania, America and Asia. The TAF is very popular with professionals and art-lovers alike but also provides a perfect starting point for anyone interested.
The festive opening of the central exposition will be held on Friday 2 October at 5: 00 PM . Entrance is free.

Verdi was a great admirer of Shakespeare. Macbeth was the first of his plays that put componistop music. We are dealing here with a ‘new’ Verdi, which then finds beauty of sound less important empathy and expression. Everything must be at the service of the drama. Often the interpretation of the lyrics goes beyond the boundaries of classical singing technique going. The literal reading of a letter from Lady Macbeth was at that time (1847), even revolutionary.

When he goes to sea again, Butterfly remains. Seven years later, Pinkerton returns, accompanied by his American wife, to pick up the child. To not have to live in shame, Butterfly kills herself. Just the blissful duet which concludes the first act, Bimba dagli pieni occhi di Malia, makes the opera into one of the best in the Italian repertoire . Sung in Italian with Dutch surtitles.

The Dutch Ladies Tattoo Convention has as main objective to provide a platform for women, and young emerging talents from the tattoo world. 31 OCTOBER TILL 8 NOV. We present the eight edition of the International Storytelling Festival Amsterdam at various locations in Amsterdam. Theme of this year will this year is “journey!”. Everyone makes one or several special trips in his life, in his head or physically. One man’s birthplace was far away and had to take a long way to find his or her home. The other was born here, but never felt at home. Some had to fight, others were just lucky. We invite the national and international top of storytellers to travel to Amsterdam. NOVEMBER 22th The Foundation is named after Dutch jewellery designer Françoise van den Bosch (1944-1977) and founded in 1980. Françoise is famed for her work with metal tubes, which she pinched, bended and distorted into jewellery and objects. Her signature-pieces consist of two parts that –when put together- form a new design. The core of the collection is formed by Françoise’s estate, comprising her own work, the many proofs she made and work she exchanged with contemporaries. The Françoise van den Bosch Collection is represented by the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.

29 SEPTEMBER TILL 4 OCT. A chamber music festival in the center of historic Amsterdam. The Seven Bri dges Qua rter derives its name from the remarkable view over seven bridges that can be seen along the Re guliersgracht. Off the beaten track, this area of Amsterdam has many secrets to offer to culture lovers, as well as to refined gourmets and discriminate shoppers. Our festival takes place in five historic locations; Mus eum Geelvinck and Mus eum V an Lo on ( with lavishly decorated, original 18t h- and 19th century rooms and gardens) , Stadsarchief ( Ci ty Archives) , the Goethe Institute and the wooden Amstelkerk ( Amstel church) , dating from 1670.

OCTOBER 18th Ron Carter (1937) is among the most original, prolific, and influential bassists in jazz. With more than 2000 albums to his credit, he has recorded with many greats: Tommy Flanagan, Gil Evans, Lena Horne, Bill Evans, B.B. King, Dexter Gordon, Wes Montgomery & many more. With his band Foursight he pays tribute to Miles Davis with whom he also performed. This true jazz legend will perform in the intimate North Sea Jazz Club during a dinner concert for the very first time.
NOVEMBER 3th Eros Ramazzotti is also known as the prodigy of the Italian pop music. In 1984 he breaks in homeland Italy by winning the Sanremo Festival with the song Terra Promessa. Eros garnered worldwide fame with the hits Se Bast Asse Una Canzone Adesso Tu Musica è Cose Della Vita and his duets with international superstars such as Cher, Tina Turner, Anastacia and Joe Cocker .
NOVEMBER 7th Soul singer Ester Rada is an Israeli with Ethiopian roots, which is evident from her mix of soul, funk and afro-jazz. ‘She’s amazing’ (Alicia Keys).

The singer, lyricist, composer and music producer sold over 55 million albums. In 2012 he released his latest album NOI . Of these, he followed sold more than 700,000 copies and an eponymous world tour.
Ester Rada has been compared to contemporary soul divas such as Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill and Corinne Bailey Rae. She herself describes her own style as ‘Nina Simone meets Ethiopia’. She grew up in the Israeli West Bank and she got her first guitar at age 13, after which she started to write her own soul songs. Five years ago she discovered the ‘ethio-jazz’ of Mulatu Astatke and became more and more interested in her roots. In her latest songs she combines influences of soul, funk and African jazz.

Volendam is the most remarkable picturesque fishing village just some 10-15 miles from Amsterdam. It dates from the era when the, now lake, IJsselmeer still was a part of the North Sea. In Volendam, you can find characteristic and delightful little houses, canals and drawbridges and, if you’re lucky, you will see people in traditional costumes. As a result of its insulated location, the village preserved its character for six centuries, also because of the tough vitality of the fishermen. The characteristic small houses, which together with the canals and the drawbridges form the most picturesque spots, present the visitor an atmosphere of geniality and romance. History and Fame The name V olendam stems from V ol-entdam, which means as much as the finishing of a dam. V olendam is located on the site of the former ( way back in 13 57 ) harbour of the historic city of Edam. As Edam started a new harbour, the old one formed a new settlement, and got the name V olendam. The population of the town grew only very slowly during those first centuries of its existence. In 146 2 it only had 25 inhabitants, whereas today some 19,000. Around 18 7 5, V olendam became known as a town worth visiting by tourists, and was thusly immortaliz ed by writers and artists. V olendam became written about both nationally and internationally, and magaz ines published photographs of stalwart fishermen by the harbour, of the women in their graceful traditional dress and of children playing in front of picturesque houses. The rich and famous flocked to this humble fishing town, where it seemed as if time had stood still.
V olendam became an artist’ s paradise, with people in graceful traditional costumes, the wooden little houses built closely together against, protected from the sea by the sturdy dike; their interiors replete with statuettes of saints and the harbour crowded with hundreds of red-sailed ‘ botters’ ( fishing boats) . Some elements of this are now of the past ( the herring fishery was finished when the sea was closed off) , but if you are curious about how the V olendam costume was worn and what the interiors of the houses looked like, do visit the V olendammer M useum to experience a little of the V olendam of yesteryear. Probably the easiest way will be the booking of a daytrip by a tour operator. I’m sure the genitor of your hotel will be able to help you with that, or you can ask the
tourist info (VVV). If you are by car, finding your way there is pretty easy and parking in Volendam is not a problem. Then there is also the opportunity of going by public transport. At Amsterdam Central Station, you can take ‘Arriva’ busses 110, 116 or 118 (these can take you to all kinds of other interesting places in the area too, like Edam and Marken) and they will take you in no time to the village. A little more time, and effort, but a tremendously fun way will be getting there by bicycle. Just rent a bike and peddle to Volendam.

AN IMPRESSION ABOUT AMSTERDAMS ELDEST RED LIGHT DISTRICT The Red Light District in Amsterdam is visited by more than 4 million visitors each year who are curious to know what goes on behind the closed curtains. The Red Light District is very close to the Dam Square. Here Amsterdam started of as a settlement around a dam in the river Amstel at the end of the 12th century. Let’s be honest Prostitution has enjoyed a long tradition of tolerance in Amsterdam. Safety is key here. In addition to preventing forced prostitution, the aim is an open and honest approach. Sex-workers here have their own union, plenty of police protection, an information centre (for visitors as well), frequent monitoring and testing and professional standards. The Amsterdam city centre has a romantic image. But behind the exciting, unconventional, ‘anything goes’ image of the city centre lurks a different reality a reality that sometimes consist of sex trafficking, forced prostitution. This is something that the city and the justice department are fighting against.
Changing the heart of Amsterdam New opportunities are setting in place a future for the city centre. The Amsterdam municipal council’s1012 project aims to discourage crime and corruption in the city centre by reducing the types of businesses that are conducive to crime and by permitting prostitution in just two areas. Together with local residents, business proprietors and investors, the municipal council is working to strengthen the area’s unique character and stimulate an economic upgrade.

Architecture and Fashion Another site not to miss in this area is in the Oudezijds Armsteeg. There are six beautiful restored Delft Blue houses in a row. Another nice idea is to go bargain hunting for fashion in de Red Light District.
