HOLLAND FESTIVAL

2015

Holland Festival is the trend-setting, international performing arts festival in the Netherlands since 1947. It offers a ‘kaleidoscopic window on the world’ with a mix of all the performing arts, big names and daring experiments. Amsterdam Journal selected some interesting performances.

30 May – 23 June 2015 For full programme and ticket sales: www.hollandfestival.nl

7 1 - M.U.R.S. La Fura dels Baus 31 May – 1 June, Westergasfabriek, Gashouder Language: English, partly Dutch surtitles This show by the Catalan company La Fura dels Baus puts the audience in the middle of an interactive theatrical installation which is the city of the future, dominated by technological gadgets and discoveries. Visitors can individually find their own way through this future world, using a specially devised app which (mis)leads them through it. Who’s in control?

1 3

2 - YOU ARE MY DESTINY (LO STUPRO DI LUCREZIA) Angélica Liddell 2 – 3 June, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam Language: Spanish and Italian with Dutch surtitles The controversial Spanish theatre maker Angélica Liddell proposes a decidedly different interpretation to the classic story of Lucretia than we’ve known. Her rebellion exposes the mediocrity of political ambitions and the stifling demand on women to be virtuous. 3 - MANGER Boris Charmatz, musée de la danse 4 – 6 June, Westergasfabriek, Zuiveringshal West French choreographer Charmatz, who continually develops new forms of dance, presents ‘manger’, about one of the most fundamental of human movements: eating. This choreography for

2 fourteen dancers results in a sensuous experience, a work that can be characterized as a moving installation. 4- LA IMAGINACIÓN DEL FUTURO Marco Layera, La Re-sentida 6 – 7 June, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam Language: Spanish with Dutch surtitles What would have happened if Chilean president Allende had played the political game differently during the coup in 1973. Would democracy have been saved? With humor and boundless energy the young punks of theatre company La Re-sentida go back in time, turning themselves into spin doctors to help Allende and rewrite history.

They blend European polyphony with the typical, layered rhythms of African song and Malaysian elements. Prepare for a spirited performance brimming with excitement! 7 - BAROQUE REVISITED Sarah Nemtsov, Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop 18 June, Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ Four old masters. Four young, up-and-coming soloists. ‘Baroque Revisited’ catapults the music of Bach, Pandolfi Mealli, Von Biber and Barriere into the 21st century, in a theatrical performance which makes maximum use of all possibilities available in the concert hall.

5 - EXTREMALISM - LE CORPS EN REVOLTE Ballet National de Marseille & ICKamsterdam 12 – 13 June, Royal Theatre Carré

8 - 12 HOUR PROM Eva-Maria Westbroek, Anna Calvi & Metropole Orchestra a.o. 20 June, The Concertgebouw

How does a body cope with an extreme situation? How does it survive in a very minimal setting? ‘Extremalism’ is a major European collaboration between two dance companies, the French Ballet National de Marseille and ICKamsterdam, both led by the Dutch choreographers Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten.

A one-day festival inspired by the famous Proms. As befits any promenade concert, the seats are taken out of the stalls, allowing the audience to walk around. The varied line-up includes a.o. Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek, widely regarded as one of the finest sopranos of our time, and from the U.K. rising pop star Anna Calvi, famed for her operatic song, her virtuoso guitar playing and her theatrical stage presence. Ony 10 per concert!

6 - CAPE TRADITIONAL SINGERS & IGUGU LE KAPA 17 June, Royal Theatre Carré From Cape Town’s cosmopolitan melting pot come two choirs that combine all the colours and tastes of the rainbow nation.

DID YOU KNOW THAT: Amsterdammers also call their city Mokum? Amsterdam was originally built on piles? You can more or less deduce from the gables how old a canalside house is? Amsterdam has more canals and bridges than Venice? The Amsterdam ring of canals has been on the UNESCO world heritage list since 2010?

City of Amsterdam Where to begin? That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you the Amsterdam Journal has divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. Each area has its own character. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown (referring to the dark wood interiors) pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands (Museumkwartier – Museum Quarter), large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops (Centrum (Centre), de Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)

Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. In the past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot! Authentic working class area You can wander around through the streets and side streets in a relaxed way and enjoy the spontaneous and relaxed atmosphere. You can experience the typical atmosphere of the Jordaan, in streets like Westerstraat, Tweede Anjeliersdwarsstraat, Tweede Tuindwarsstraat and around the Noordermarkt. On Saturdays you will find the best organic farmer’s market of Amsterdam on the Noordermarkt, directly opposite the Noorderkerk (Noorder church).

Bloemgracht In the 17th century the ‘Herengracht of the Jordaan’, as the gorgeous Bloemgracht was called, was home to paint and sugar factories, and a large number of fine gabled houses. A striking example is De Drie Hendricken , built in a sober Renaissance style. The gable stones above the ground floor depict a townsperson, a farmer and a seafarer. Many artists also lived on Bloemgracht, including Jurriaen Andriessen, whose work is displayed in the Rijksmuseum. During the summertime the Bloemgracht Terrace is a beautiful terrace that you definitely need to visit. It is probably one of the most beautiful spots in De Jordaan. Have a nice glass of wine or a awesome lunch and enjoy the view of the boats passing by through the canal

11

04-06-15 17:49

Pubs/Bars and shops When you walk from the Noorderkerk to the Westerkerk (Western church) – the recognizable church that has a blue-red crown on its tower - , you will automatically get to the Westermarkt. Here you will find the monument for gay people (1987), consisting of three large pink granite triangles. From here you can go straight onto Rozengracht (Rozen canal). This shopping street is very well-liked because of its diversity of nice shops.

Anne Frank house Not far from the Westerkerk, you can take a look in the Anne Frank’s Achterhuis. Behind a closet that turns out to be a door, you will find the small house where she wrote in her diary. Very oppressive.

The real pub life ‘Gezellig. This Dutch word – that can barely be translated properly -, applies perfectly to the typical (brown) pubs in the Jordaan. The atmosphere is easy-going, the people are spontaneous and speak with a very broad Amsterdam accent. You will regularly hear the sound of original Dutch music.

TIPS! • Do you want to visit the Anne Frank House (Prinsengracht 267)? Be there on time and prepare for serious waiting times. • Visit L’invité le Restaurant or the Bloemgracht Terrace. • Visit the fabric market (Lapjesmarkt) on the Noordermarkt: Mondays 8.00 – 14.00 hours. • Feel like going on a shopping spree? At the edge of the Jordaan you will find the Haarlemmerstraat and the Haarlemmerdijk with many contemporary and unique and edgy clothes shops.

Not far behind Dam Square, between the wellknown ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. Pleasant, unique and bold In former times the workshops of craftsmen could be found in Reestraat, Berenstraat, Runstraat, Hartenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Huidenstraat, Gasthuismolensteeg, Oude Spiegelstraat and Wijde Heisteeg. Nowadays the small streets are full of specialist shops. If you want to snap up something special, you are bound to be successful here. Contrary to the large shops in the city centre, nothing is standard here. Except the more easy-going atmosphere and the great amount of creativity. Vintage, chic, second-hand and everything in between The collections of the shops show that the owners are passionate enthusiasts. Many of them have made their hobby their job. If you love clothes with just something special, you can indulge yourself in the more than fifty clothes shops. No sameness here, but mainly colourful, chic, trendy, exciting, vintage or secondhand clothes. The second-hand shops in the Nine Streets are famous for vintage, chic and second-hand clothes in Amsterdam by the way. Unlike anything else All the shops really show sincere interests: shoe shops with unusual collections, a sock shop for men, specialised bookshops, a cheese shop with hundreds of different types of cheeses and have you ever seen a White Teeth shop before?

TIPS! • On de9straatjes.nl/uk/ you can see the amount of specialised shops • Most shops in the Nine Streets are also open on Sundays, after 12.00 hours. • There are various small cafés in the Nine Streets that sell healthy sandwiches, smoothies, cheesecake and other goodies.

Furthermore, do they have a very attractive lunch card, with scrumptious club sandwiches and home made cakes. All ingredients used are fresh and ecological friendly meat is used. They have many vegetarian and vegan dishes on the menu. All the dishes are home made, of course. Especially recommendable is their multiple prize-winning club sandwich. A true family business with a passion for fresh, honest and tasty food.

The Brilmuseum (National Museum of Spectacles) grew out of a private collector’s passion for optometric objects. Today, the collection is displayed on two floors of a lovely 17th century building located in Amsterdam’s charming Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) district. The museum provides a unique overview of the 700-year history of spectacles, including the changing fashions and technologies over the centuries.

Museumkwartier

There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes. Where to begin? Rijksmuseum (National Museum) In this impressive monumental building dating from 1885 you will find the famous masterpieces of Dutch and Flemish painters from the fifteenth up to and including the nineteenth century. Here you will also find Rembrandt’s world-famous Night Watch (1650). Other masters to be found here are: Jan Steen, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer. After a long renovation project the Rijksmuseum has been open again completely since April.

Van Gogh Museum When you walk through this museum you clearly see how this painter developed. As sombre as the paintings are that he made in the Netherlands, so colourful and vivid are the works that he made on French soil. You will also find works of contemporaries like Monet and Gauguin in the museum.

Stedelijk Museum (Municipal Museum) The Stedelijk Museum, established in 1874, has a large collection of classical, modern and contemporary art. The museum owns about 90.000 objects from practically all important 20th and 21st century schools.

Concertgebouw (Concert building) In 1888 the first concert took place in this famous Concert building. The acoustics in the building are extraordinary. In 2013 the Concertgebouw is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Every month of the Jubilee year a different period from the history of the Concertgebouw are central.

Browsing around in antique shops Together with the adjacent Nieuwe Spiegelstraat, Spiegelgracht (opposite the Rijksmuseum) makes up the heart of the Spiegelkwartier; an area with many antique shops and galleries.

TIPS! • If you don’t like waiting, you just order your Museum tickets online. • During the concert season (mid-September to the end of June) a free lunch concert is given in the Concertgebouw on Wednesdays: between 12.00 and 12.30 hours. • High Society shopping: parallel to Museumplein you will find the most stylish and most expensive shopping street of the Netherlands: P.C. Hooftstraat. • Diamond lovers visit the Diamond Museum Amsterdam (Paulus Potterstraat, opposite Museumplein)

Old Town

Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. Although not appreciated by everyone, a tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. The Zeedijk and China Town Close to Central station you will find one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam: the Zeedijk. The place is swarming with restaurants, cafés and Indonesian shops (tokos). The Zeedijk is the centre of China Town; the Peking ducks hang behind the windows and a large Buddhist temple colours the street scene. From midday you will increasingly smell aromas that make your mouth water. Pull up a chair in one of the smaller Chinese restaurants. This is where Chinese Amsterdammers (or Amsterdam Chinese) eat too. Is there a line somewhere? Then the wait is very probably highly worthwhile!

Red light district The Red Light district covers the area between Zeedijk and Warmoesstraat. As soon as dusk falls and the shining red light greets you, the atmosphere is loose and laid back here. The ladies behind the windows wink playfully are friendly and wave to the merry passers-by. Do you want to get your breath back for a moment from all the impressions? There are plenty of pubs to recover while enjoying a beer.

Oude Kerksplein (Old Church Square) The Oude Kerksplein is special place in the heart of the Red Light district. The 14th century church is the oldest building still standing in Amsterdam. There’s a bronze statue on the square in honour of the prostitutes who have been active in this area for centuries. This lady is called ‘Belle’.

Cannabis College Amsterdam The Cannabis College offers free advice on safe recreational Cannabis use in addition to educating the public about the many uses of the hemp plant. Guided tours of our Cannabis garden allow us to bring our information to life with a beautiful, completely bio-organic example of indoor growing.

TIPS! • Try turning onto Spooksteeg from Zeedijk and cross the bridge for a fantastic ‘keyhole’ view of Amsterdam • There is lots to see and do around Zeedijk too. There are some great Asian stores on Geldersekade and Nieuwmarkt is bursting with life. • Short on time? Zeedijk is an ideal place to start and end a day in Amsterdam. • The Chinese temple is free to visit and is open every day.

Artist Mark Raven and his Contemporary City Impressions

Text: Sarah Saarberg

It is obvious that the artist Mark Raven loves his birthplace by each and every work he has made of Amsterdam. This city never ceases to captivate and inspire him. Mark’s work is modern and wayward, but is unmistakably connected to this versatile and interesting capitol of ours. If Marks Raven’s father had had his way, Mark would have become a journalist. At the time, he followed his advice and went to the school for journalism. But he clearly was destined for other things. The artist explains his chosen medium: “The image, as means of communication, is far more appealing to me than text. Moreover, an image is universal. Everyone understands it.” And so, Mark installed himself as a street artist on a rug in the tunnel underneath the Rijksmuseum to capture the city in every way. “I love the city. But I love people too. I immediately want to show them what I make.”

Kiosk on Museumplein Mark’s work was liked right from the beginning. So much even, that the city council helped him to a studio right on the Museumplein in the form of a rebuild flower stall. Mark wanted his art to be accessible for everyone, and so he began to print t-shirts and posters with his work. “I would like it if everyone could enjoy my view of Amsterdam,” he simply says.

in the tradition of Rembrandt’s etchings and M.C. Escher’s graphic work, but gradually generated his modern touch. Mark combines traditional etching techniques with painting and modern graphic and digital techniques. All in a style that appeals to a lot of people. And not just tourists. Many Amsterdammers have a Mark Raven hanging on their wall.

Accessible for every budget Nowadays, Mark Raven is located at the renowned shoppingstreet of Amsterdam the “Leidsestraat” near the “Leidseplein” and he has a gallery slash shop on Nieuwe-zijds Voorburgwal, a fabulous location right behind Dam square next to Magna Plaza. On the ground floor you can buy t-shirts, posters, postcards and other articles, all with the recognizable Mark Raven art. Upstairs, you can find original prints, some printed in a limited edition, others not. This is for the reason that, despite his enormous success, Mark Raven wants to be attainable for every budget. “My boxes with coasters are very popular with backpackers. I like that: in this way, my view on Amsterdam will spread all around the world.”

The Docklands

In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. Architecture and urban design Present and past have been brought together in the architecture and the urban design of the Docklands. The harbour feeling is still alive, but old warehouses have been given new functions and the diverging designs of various artists link up with each other perfectly. Admire the special houses on KNSM island, walk across the whole Java island via the pedestrian bridges and take a look at the Whale (or Sphinx) on the Sporenbrug on Borneo island. IJburg is absolutely worth a visit for architectural buffs. The urban design scheme here is based on the ‘collage city concept’. The island consists of 8 neighbourhoods, each of which has its own individual character.

Going out and music The Docklands attract many artistic people, so it comes as no surprise that when it comes to culture and going out there is plenty to do here. It’s mainly about contemporary classical music in the Music Building (Muziekgebouw) on IJ lake (a ten-minute walk from the back of the Central Station). The Bim house (Bim huis), that protrudes on the street side of the Music Building is a concert hall for jazz and improvised music. When you cross the IJ with the Ferry (Pont) from the back of the railway station, you get to another striking building: the Netherlands EYE Film Institute. The collection of the EYE comprises the complete film history.

TIPS! • Take a guided walk (also in the English language) on the Eastern Docklands • Visit the permanent showing in the basement of the EYE Film Institute Nederland for free. • Pay a visit to the beautiful Maritime Museum and get on board a replica of a VOC ship. (Kattenburgerplein 1) • Enjoy the sun on the roof terrace of the Nemo Science Centre (free of charge) or be surprised in this museum about technology and science. The Nemo Science Centre is equally interesting and fun for adults as it is for children.

Van Gogh Year 125 Years of Inspiration On 29 July 2015 it will be exactly 125 years since Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) died. Throughout the year, various European towns are organising unique exhibitions and cultural events linked by the theme of ‘125 Years of Inspiration’. Even today, Van Gogh inspires people all over the world and, 125 years after his death, is still more ‘alive’ than ever. In memory of the Dutch artist in this year, the Van Gogh Europe Foundation, an association comprising around 30 institutions, is organising an international programme in four countries. In this issue you can find more.

EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS Exhibitions and cultural events are being organised in the various towns and villages in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and England that are of importance for the life and work of the artist. For the first time, museums and institutions that actively contribute to conserving Van Gogh’s heritage are working together on a large scale. VAN GOGH EUROPE FOUNDATION Four institutions laid the basis of the Van Gogh Europe Foundation: the Van Gogh Museum, the Kröller-Müller Museum, Van Gogh Brabant and Mons 2015, the European Capital of Culture. The Foundation consists of around 30 institutions which actively contribute to conserving Van Gogh’s heritage in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and England. VAN GOGH YEAR 2015: INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME The Van Gogh Year 2015 is being celebrated in four countries in Europe with prominent exhibitions and cultural events, such as ‘Munch : Van Gogh’ in the Van Gogh Museum. Van Gogh from various periods. His paintings and drawings are combined with works by his contemporaries from the museum’s collection. You can thus draw parallels and discover how Van Gogh approached genres like still life, landscape and portrait painting. VAN GOGH LOCATIONS Many different towns and villages in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and England where Van Gogh lived and worked will be hosting activities throughout the year. For example, in Nuenen you can walk where Vincent once walked, and still see what Vincent once saw. You can experience in real life the lovely and unique locations he painted.

VAN GOGH & CO VAN GOGH YEAR: 125 YEARS OF INSPIRATION On 29 July 2015 it will be exactly 125 years since Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) died. In the Van Gogh Year the Kröller-Müller Museum presents the exhibition Van Gogh & Co. Criss-crossing the collection.

Summer presentation

Still lifes, nature themes, cityscapes and the human figure by Vincent van Gogh are compared to works by his contemporaries in the same genres. More than fifty paintings and drawings by Van Gogh will be shown, along with an equal number of works by other artists, such as François Bonvin, Jan Toorop, Henri FantinLatour, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Paul Cézanne, Adolphe Monticelli and Bart van der Leck. Summer presentation For the Van Gogh & Co exhibition, the works of Vincent van Gogh have temporarily vacated their usual spot in the Van Gogh Gallery. This has created room for a special Summer presentation, which places extra emphasis on cubism, futurism, De Stijl and constructivism.

Vincent and Helene The Kröller-Müller is Vincent van Gogh’s second home. With nearly 90 paintings and over 180 drawings, the museum boasts the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world. The museum is the life work of Helene Kröller-Müller. Together with her husband Anton Kröller, she acquired almost 11,500 works of art between 1907 and 1922. Helene first discovered the work of Van Gogh in the summer of 1905 when she began taking lessons in art history from the art historian H.P. Bremmer. She became completely fascinated by art and began collecting. Van Gogh was her personal favourite and his works formed the core of her collection from the outset. An extraordinary combination: art, architecture and nature A visit to the museum is an experience in itself. A voyage of discovery that starts at the entrance to the Hoge Veluwe National Park. Visitors are free to walk around or borrow one of the white bicycles (free of charge) to discover the natural beauty of the Netherlands’ most breath-taking treasure trove.

The Kröller-Müller Museum has one of the largest sculpture gardens in Europe. An outdoor gallery measuring 25 hectares in which modern sculpture finds a natural setting. The garden is open all year round and exudes a different ambience with every season. The combination of the art collection, glorious sculpture garden and the beautiful landscapes is totally unique.

What’s the best time to visit Amsterdam and its green backyard De Veluwe? That depends of course on what you’re looking for. Springtime is bright and colourful in Amsterdam. In summer it buzzes with all sorts of outdoors activities and festivals. In autumn or winter, as the leaves are blown from the trees, Amsterdam’s beautiful gables reappear in their full glory from behind the foliage.

CODA Museum puts on grand display - CODA Paper Art 2015 Paper and cardboard are relatively simple and fairly cheap materials that, combined with traditional and modern techniques and the artist’s inspiration, show their endless possibilities and expressive power in staggering and dynamic but sometimes also moving and subtle ways. After a highly successful edition in 2013, CODA Museum Apeldoorn presents CODA Paper Art 2015, an exhibition that provides ample space – both literally and figuratively – for the installations, spatial works and specially selected jewellery of 36 artists from the Netherlands and abroad whose work is centred around paper and cardboard. Poster Paper Art 2015 The mysterious tree-patterned mask Behind the Gates by American artist Phillip Valdez does not only grace the poster of this edition of Paper Art, but is also part of this exhibition, along with a number of other masks representing death. Valdez has also made a new mask for CODA Paper Art 2015.

An exhibition devoted to Rembrandt’s extraordinary choice for paper from Japan. It has long been known that Rembrandt made prints on this kind of paper, but it remained unclear from which region it originated. Recently researchers in Japan and in The Netherlands (Rijksmuseum) have started research on whether the paper originated from Japan and more particularly from the region of Echizen, located in Fukui Prefecture, Japan. Rembrandt was even a pioneer in the use of such valuable and exotic papers, starting around 1647. The only etched portrait of his son Titus was exclusively printed on Japanese paper. Dramatic comparisons with prints on western paper will reveal the effect of Rembrandt’s striking choice..

The body, and in particular the skin, serves as a canvas to give form to yourself, to transform and show who you are. It is an important means of expressing identity. With Body Art the Tropenmuseum presents an exhibition about body modifications in the widest sense, from makeup and tattoos to implants below the skin and surgical changes. Across time and cultures.

Alexander, Napoleon & Joséphine Hermitage Amsterdam Amstel 51 (020) 530 87 55 hermitage.nl TILL NOVEMBER 8 2015 A story in four scenes Our story begins in 1807. Napoleon and Joséphine were seeing very little of each other, because of the many wars that Napoleon was waging across the European continent. Joséphine was on her own in their love nest, Château de Malmaison, just outside Paris. That year, Napoleon and the tsar concluded the Treaty of Tilsit, establishing a coalition for peace intended to change the political constellation in Europe and Asia. In the process, they formed a friendship that seemed genuine and enduring. After fifteen days, they said farewell, and in the years that followed they exchanged many diplomatic gifts.

Almost six years later, the show attracted more than one million people in more than 23 countries. Carré has iD this summer to the Netherlands and in showing what the streetwise sister of that other great circus from Canada to the world of circus and spectacle has to add. 14 young top artists, representatives of a new generation, leave for 90 minutes bloodcurdling see a show that is unparalleled. It is reminiscent of the first encounter with Cirque du Soleil or the Blue Man Group. Same ecstasy and euphoria, but in keeping with the zeitgeist of today. Cirque Éloize iD is a brilliantly balanced mix of topacrobatiek, urban dance and high-tech video projections. An adrenaline rush with a touch of West Side Story-like ‘boy meets girl’ street romance. Breathtaking, beautiful, and simply at times poetic. That iD shown in Carré makes it extra special. The most innovative circus spectacle of this time, one month at home in the place where so many world circuses histories knew how to write. A unique opportunity for young and old. 41

SAIL SAIL Amsterdam 2015 2015 The largest SAIL ever

The nautical event SAIL Amsterdam 2015 promises to be the most impressive edition so far, with a record number of Tall Ships – 50 – including 13 first-timers and a 12-kilometer long SAIL In Parade. SAIL Amsterdam 2015 has charted a new course with a substantial expansion of the event grounds, now divided up into thematic ‘oceans’. A new element is the SAIL Music Marina with a stage on the northern bank of the River IJ. The concept and programming are also more focused on appealing to a younger public. A national debate will be held on the SAIL theme ‘From the Golden Age to a Golden Future’. Lots of inspiring activities will be organised for families and for children. The exclusive SAIL Village is the point of departure for thousands of hospitality arrangements. It goes without saying that the programme again includes traditional and popular ceremonies and activities such as the Saluut Protocollair, the Fleet Review, skûtsjesilen (traditional Frisian sailing) on the IJ River, breath-taking firework displays and the Crew Parade. First-ever Tall Ships to attend During this ninth edition of SAIL Amsterdam, numerous Tall Ships will be calling on the capital city for the first time. For instance, the Young Endeavour is sailing into port all the way from Australia. The coming of this magnificent vessel is a unique event for SAIL Amsterdam and for the Netherlands. From Spain, we welcome a replica of the legendary Nao Victoria: the original 16thcentury ship was the first Tall Ship to successfully circumnavigate the globe, between 1519 and 1522. La Grace is a charming replica from the Czech Republic, and will also be calling in to Amsterdam for the first time. Another first-ever is the coming of Guayas from Ecuador. This ship, too, was coveted by many previous SAIL editions and will now be putting in its first appearance. The Half Moon recently arrived in the Netherlands from the United States and will also be on show. Another newcomer to SAIL Amsterdam is the Chilean vessel Esmeralda.

Tall Ships popular with the public, such as the Kruzenshtern, the Christian Radich and the Statsraad Lehmkuhl, will again be part of the event.

Five ‘Oceans’ with separate themes SAIL Amsterdam 2015 will not just take place around the IJhaven (temporarily renamed as Oranjehaven). More than in previous editions, the rest of Amsterdam will also be involved in the activities. To this end, SAIL has set up five different ‘Oceans’, each with its own colour and theme. “Oranjehaven with the Tall Ships and the main stages, including the new SAIL Music Marina, will be part of the Orange Ocean. The city centre is designated as the cultural Red Ocean, where various tours will be offered of nautically relevant historical sites and museums. Between the Orange and Red Oceans we have the business-oriented Blue Ocean, with the National Maritime Museum as one of the main meeting spots for the corporate world during SAIL. The creative and innovative Green Ocean is located on the northern bank of the River IJ, at the NDSM wharf, as is the White Ocean with its very diverse programme that will appeal especially to the younger crowd.” SAIL Amsterdam 2015 takes place from Wednesday 19 to Sunday 23 August. SAIL was first held in 1975 and has since then grown into the largest free event in the Netherlands. SAIL Amsterdam 2015 is organised by Stichting SAIL Amsterdam (SSA) and SAIL Event Partners (SEP). More information is available at www.sail. nl, via Facebook (facebook.com/sail.nl), Twitter (@sailamsterdam, #SAIL2015) or Instagram (sailamsterdam2015, #SAIL2015).

Volendam The Ultimate Picturesque Fishing Village

You can find characteristic and delightful little houses, canals and drawbridges

05-06-15 13:42

Volendam is the most remarkable picturesque fishing village just some 10-15 miles from Amsterdam. It dates from the era when the, now lake, IJsselmeer still was a part of the North Sea. In Volendam, you can find characteristic and delightful little houses, canals and drawbridges and, if you’re lucky, you will see people in traditional costumes. As a result of its insulated location, the village preserved its character for six centuries, also because of the tough vitality of the fishermen. The characteristic small houses, which together with the canals and the drawbridges form the most picturesque spots, present the visitor an atmosphere of geniality and romance. History and Fame The name Volendam stems from Vol-entdam, which means as much as the finishing of a dam. Volendam is located on the site of the former (way back in 1357) harbour of the historic city of Edam. As Edam started a new harbour, the old one formed a new settlement, and got the name Volendam. The population of the town grew only very slowly during those first centuries of its existence. In 1462 it only had 25 inhabitants, whereas today some 19,000. Around 1875, Volendam became known as a town worth visiting by tourists, and was thusly immortalized by writers and artists. Volendam became written about both nationally and internationally, and magazines published photographs of stalwart fishermen by the harbour, of the women in their graceful traditional dress and of children playing in front of picturesque houses. The rich and famous flocked to this humble fishing town, where it seemed as if time had stood still.

Volendam became an artist’s paradise, with people in graceful traditional costumes, the wooden little houses built closely together against, protected from the sea by the sturdy dike; their interiors replete with statuettes of saints and the harbour crowded with hundreds of red-sailed ‘botters’ (fishing boats). Some elements of this are now of the past (the herring fishery was finished when the sea was closed off), but if you are curious about how the Volendam costume was worn and what the interiors of the houses looked like, do visit the Volendammer Museum to experience a little of the Volendam of yesteryear.

DREAM STYLE LINGERIE Edammerweg 8 – Volendam, phone (0299) 350184 Are you looking for lingerie for a special occasion, something modern, or just something that makes you feel comfortable? We offer you a wide and varied collection of lingerie, nightwear, children’s and gentleman’s underwear from several well-known brands in all price ranges. The brands in our collection are, amongst others, Prima Donna, Marie Jo, Aubade, Simone Perele, Sapph, Triumph, Sloggi, Schiesser, Pastunette, Vive Maria, Pussy de Luxe, Cyell, Pill, and Lisca.

The Costume The costumes of Volendam are worldrenowned. Around the entire world you can see portraits of people who have had themselves photographed in Volendam costume at the time of their visit to the place.

The most famous part of the Dutch costume is of course the wooden shoes or “clogs”. The history of the clogs goes way back to the middle ages where the wooden sandal developed into more modern clogs. Today, clogs have extra layers of wood or

wooden pegs under the sole and heel. The foot came less in contact with the muddy streets. Furthermore, it was easier to bend the foot as the extra sole was shorter than the one on which the foot rested. They were especially used by people who stand and walk a great deal of the day like farmers and bulb-growers as cheap, longlasting working shoes. The clog has gone a little bit out of fashion these days, but you can still occasionally see people walk around on them.

Right in the middle of the famous dike in Volendam, bordering the lively harbour, you can find the fish stall ‘Lekkers’ (tasty). Here you can buy several delicious fish sandwiches. For instance smoked eel, mackerel or shrimp. Of course this is also the place for butterly tender, freshly sliced herring, a real Dutch treat. And the ‘kibbeling’ (deep fried pieces of battered cod) will be fried right in front of you, so you’ll know it’s fresh and hot. Incredibly friendly Volendam ladies will serve you. The fish is great value for money and of incredible quality. Their motto is: if it ain’t good, don’t sell it. And because most customers like to take away the fish, they can vacuum wrap the purchase for free. See you at the dike!

Getting There There are several ways to visit the town. Probably the easiest way will be the booking of a daytrip by a tour operator. I’m sure the genitor of your hotel will be able to help you with that, or you can ask the tourist info (VVV). If you are by car, finding your way there is pretty easy and parking in Volendam is not a problem.

Station, you can take ‘Arriva’ busses 110, 116 or 118 (these can take you to all kinds of other interesting places in the area too, like Edam and Marken) and they will take you in no time to the village. A little more time, and effort, but a tremendously fun way will be getting there by bicycle. Just rent a bike and peddle to Volendam. ■

Then there is also the opportunity of going by public transport. At Amsterdam Central

SPE CIAL

Zaanse Schans

With its traditional green painted houses, warehouses and windmills the Zaanse Schans gives the feeling of having stepped back into the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries. However this is not an open air museum but a colourful living and working neighbourhood. Most of the buildings were re-located from other areas in the Zaanstreek in the 1960’s and 70’s as owing to urban development they were under threat of obliteration. The Zaanse Schans offers a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape as it was before and after the industrial revolution. This panorama makes the Zaanse Schans a vital link in the European Route of Industrial Heritage. Windmills A visit to a working industrial windmill is a unique experience. Paint mill De Kat and oil mill De Zoeker are open daily from March to October. From November to February most of the windmills at the Zaanse Schans are only open at the weekends. The Jonge Schaap is open all year.

Museums The Zaanse Schans has a number of fascinating museums to tempt the visitor. The Zaans Museum and the Verkade Pavilion make the tastiest museum in the Netherlands. The collection is extremely wide-ranging and is presented in a contemporary way. It features utensils, clothing and paintings as well as factory equipment from the food industry, and as you make your way through the museum you can press on various displays and try and package as many biscuits and sweets as you can in a computer game. The smaller, specialized museums such as the first Albert Heijn Grocery shop, the Bakery Museum ‘In de Gecroonde Duyvekater’, Museum of the Dutch Clock, are all situated at the Zaanse Schans in listed buildings bringing the history of this oldest industrial area to life.

Traditional Dutch Craft There is no entrance fee for visiting the traditional Dutch workshops such as the Wooden Shoe Workshop, the Pewter Foundry, Cocoa Lab and the Cheese Farm at the Zaanse Schans. Opening times may vary, but generally they are open daily throughout the year.

River cruises The most enjoyable way to see the surrounding area is from the water. FOOD DRINKS NIGHTLIFE

Amsterdam has all the nightlife you would expect. There are intimate restaurants, bars with or without live music, hip dance clubs, comedy clubs, and a casino. A complete list would fill a whole book, so we can only give you some recommendations here.

bars | live music

restaurants | cafés As one might expect from a cosmopolitan city, Amsterdam not only offers the possibility of enjoying classical French cuisine, but since a few decades the city has also abounded in - sometimes surprisingly good - Greek, Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese, Korean and even Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants. This fact has caused the extensive, daily public market in Albert Cuypstraat to adapt its range to the purchasing requirements of these restaurants. For a quick cheap lunchtime bite try the sandwich shops, the chips stands or herring stalls. Eating maatjes (‘mates’) herring is quite possibly the only important culinary tradition of our otherwise in this respect poorly endowed country. Amsterdam is also a city with many bars and cafés, some 1,500 in all. Each of the areas mentioned below has something to offer, from friendly and relaxed brown cafés, stylish grand cafés to crowded designer bars.

Jordaan The most easy-going area of the city hosts a great number of outstanding restaurants and bars, from classical French cuisine, Thai food to Tapas bars. Something can be found to everyone’s taste.

Rembrandtplein Observed by the cast-iron statue of Amsterdam’s most famous painter lies Rembrandtplein. This place is bustling with places to eat and drink. Some of the most beautiful grand cafés are located here, like Schiller withits marvellous art deco interior.

Utrechtsestraat area This narrow street has a special atmosphere and is known for its gift shops and international restaurants. Before dining, you can unwind with a drink on a terrace on Rembrandtplein.

Reguliersdwarsstraat As far as gay nightlife is concerned, without a doubt, the Reguliersdwarsstraat is the hippest street in town. However, some of the best restaurants are located here.

Leidseplein The cafés and bars vary greatly and have their own special attraction: a wide range of beers, jenever (Dutch gin), live music, canal-side terraces, board games, pool tables or just good old fun.

Leidseplein is Amsterdam’s centre of entertainment, with its many bars, nightclubs, theatres, music halls and hotels. Of course there are many different types of restaurants here.

Amsterdam has some great small bars where you enter for free and or a small fee to listen to live music. Singer-songwriters, jazz, pop, folk or even classical music. You just have to know where to go.

cocktails | dinner The Venice of the North, Amsterdam’s attractions are considerable. Besides the famed redlight areas where window-shopping takes on a whole new meaning and the coffee bars that are more popular for their other wares, Amsterdam is also home to hundreds of great bars and clubs: style bars, cocktail bars, bistros, restaurants and casinos, and the famous brown cafes where you can linger long over a beer and watch the people of Amsterdam go about their business. Once you’ve visited the museum quarter and taken a tour of the canals, you can hit the town. A night out in the many bars of Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein should see you into the small hours.

dinner | clubs Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to groove. In Amsterdam you can party all night long, nearly every night of the week! Have a look at the listings below - whether you’re into techno, drum & bass, top 40, hip-hop or anything in between, you’ll find a club to match your mood.

Red light AN IMPRESSION ABOUT AMSTERDAMS ELDEST RED LIGHT DISTRICT The Red Light District in Amsterdam is visited by more than 4 million visitors each year who are curious to know what goes on behind the closed curtains. The Red Light District is very close to the Dam Square. Here Amsterdam started of as a settlement around a dam in the river Amstel at the end of the 12th century.

Changing the heart of Amsterdam

Let’s be honest

Visiting the Red Light District

Prostitution has enjoyed a long tradition of tolerance in Amsterdam. Safety is key here. In addition to preventing forced prostitution, the aim is an open and honest approach. Sex-workers here have their own union, plenty of police protection, an information centre (for visitors as well), frequent monitoring and testing and professional standards.

The area is bustling with visitors and groups of tourists. It is best to travel in a pair or in a group, as the area also attracts some seedier characters. Grab a map and venture out or if you’re keen to learn more take one of the many specialised tours. ➤

New opportunities are setting in place a future for the city centre. The Amsterdam municipal council’s1012 project aims to discourage crime and corruption in the city centre by reducing the types of businesses that are conducive to crime and by permitting prostitution in just two areas. Together with local residents, business proprietors and investors, the municipal council is working to strengthen the area’s unique character and stimulate an economic upgrade.

The Amsterdam city centre has a romantic image. But behind the exciting, unconventional, ‘anything goes’ image of the city centre lurks a different reality -- a reality that sometimes consist of sex trafficking, forced prostitution. This is something that the city and the justice department are fighting against.

Not everything goes There are certain rules in place to ensure the safety of prostitutes and visitors to the Red Light District. It is forbidden to take photos of the women, and this is strictly enforced. Although there is 24-hour video surveillance in most parts of the district, be aware of pickpockets. They tend to target crowds of distracted tourists, so keep an eye on your belongings and leave your valuables in a safe at the hotel. Many families and people who need to get up for work the next morning live in this area. Respect their neighbourhood, and do not yell or cause disturbances.

AS THE YEARS WENT BY THE CURTAINS OPENED MORE AND MORE.

There is more to the Wallen The Wallen, also known as the rosse buurt to Amsterdammers and the Red Light District to visitors is actually the oldest part of Amsterdam. The neighbourhood is chock-full of interesting shops, pubs, fantastic restaurants, leaning gabled houses and the city’s most charming canals. Don’t miss the vibrant Nieuwmarkt square, the gothic Oude Kerk or a walk along the centre of Amsterdam’s Chinatown, the Zeedijk (also home to an impressive Buddhist temple).

Architecture and Fashion Another site not to miss in this area is in the Oudezijds Armsteeg. There are six beautiful restored Delft Blue houses in a row. Another nice idea is to go bargain hunting for fashion in de Red Light District. Several former prostitute’s windows in De Wallen have been transformed into exhibition spaces and studios for talented clothing, shoe and streetwear designers. ■
