JORDAAN Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. Inthe past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot!

CITY OF AMSTERDAM Where to begin?

BY DORIEN TER VELD. That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you we have divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands Museum Quarter, large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops Centre, Nine Streets or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s worldfamous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). SEE MAP ON PAGE 64-65. You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)

6 - CINQ

9 STRAATJES Not far behind Dam Square, between the well-known ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. FASHION & MUSEUM DISTRICT (see page 20) There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes. OLD TOWN Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. A tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. CITY CENTRE A five-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, you will get to Dam Square. Here you will find the Palace and the National Monument. The large

dove population and street artists also attract the attention. From Dam Square you walk straight into the Walhalla for shopping fanatics. The major store chains are all represented here. REMBRANDTPLEIN Eating, drinking and dancing you do around Rembrandtplein. All year around this is the place to be for dazzling nightlife and in summer the outdoor cafés are crowded. There’s also enough to see and do in the area for people who enjoy the good life. THE PLANTAGE You don’t feel a lot of enthusiasm for the still life works in the Museum Quarter and you don’t feel like shopping or sight-seeing? With its 19th century architecture the Plantage is a greenand quiet part of Amsterdam where there is plenty to do. LEIDSEPLEIN Amsterdam’s most famous, largest and most touristic entertainment area. There are countless restaurants with affordable day specials and outdoor cafés that even have heating when the weather is somewhat cold. Leidseplein is also the epicentre of all kinds of well-known theatres and concert podiums. THE DOCKLANDS In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. ■

Dutch Design

CREATED ON DUTCH SOIL In the twentieth century, Dutch design has evolved. Besides, for instance, architecture and modern dance, design has become another area where the Netherlands excels internationally. As a result, current Dutch graphic design, fashion design, product design, interior design and furniture design are in the spotlight. From the lingerie of Marlies Dekkers, to the costumes of the Harry Potter movies and the interior pieces of Marcel Wanders; they have all been created on Dutch soil. TYPICAL DUTCH DESIGN Dutch design is characterised by simplicity and clarity. It is often described using terms such as down-to-earthness, sense of humour and perspective and surprising, smart design. These characteristics are the result of creativity in an open, tolerant society. Functionalism has long been the leading ideology behind Dutch design and worked well with the Calvinist attitude of the Dutch. At the start of the twentieth century, the Netherlands became famous by the works of the members of ‘De Stijl’ artistic movement, with artists such as Mondrian and Rietveld. In the nineties, a new artistic trend developed. Functionality of the product no longer came first; the concept behind the design took centre stage. Design became less of an artisanal and more of an artistic discipline. As part of this international trend, the emphasis shifted more towards artistic aspects such as concept and originality and away from production and user requirements. In the process, designers such as Tord Boontje and Viktor & Rolf shift with ease between commercial and artistic considerations. In this sense, Dutch design is at the forefront. AMSTERDAM From designer shopping to a glamorous fashion week, Amsterdam has a fashionable centre just waiting to be discovered. Amsterdam is a source of inspiration for stylish individuals. Even if your budget prevents you from shopping for exclusive high-end designs, there are plenty of more affordable ways to soak up Amsterdam’s fashionable vibe. A lot of the Dutch Designers have choosen Amsterdam, in the Fashion & Museum district you will find the Dutch Designers: Fred de la Bretonière, Pauw and The People of the Labyrinths. When you are interested in Haute Couture visit the designers Mart Visser en Frans Molenaar. You will find other Dutch Designers throughout of Amsterdam like the international well known Designers Viktor & Rolf , Jan Jansen Shoes, Tony Cohen, Sheila de Vries and Marlies Dekkers, young talented designers such as Dennis Diem and Dorhout Mees are also Amsterdambased fashion houses. Dutch brands: G-Star RAW, Claudia Strater, Gaastra, Gsus Industries, Scotch & Soda and Supertrash. ■

The Maverick Collection features a total of 42 different executions with each model offered in both 45mm and 48mm size. Each Maverick timepiece design comes in three versions. The first, a super-clean three-hand, comes with a Miyota 2417 movement and brushed case and bezel; the second, a chrono, is powered by a big calibre 6S21 movement and stands out with two chrono eyes and shiny case and bezel. Except for the PVD black coated executions, which come with a matt sandblasted finish. The third design, an equally impressive automatic, shares the same shiny case and bezel and houses a Seiko NH35 movement with an exclusive Geneva pattern rotor. The PVD black-coated executions again come with a matt sandblasted finish. The stunning collection is set off by a choice of either a premium quality, exclusive vintage inspired leather strap with bold stitching detail, or equally impressive steel Milanese bracelet for which no tools are needed to shorten the bracelet. All leather strap models feature the popular and practical Capsa/ Quick Change Construction. The icing on the sport heritage cake for the Maverick Collection comes in the form of double-layered sandwich dials on all leather strap models, bringing the digits and indexes into sharp focus and giving head turning depth and feel to the brand new collection. “Just over ten years ago, we began our company by launching an iconic timepiece collection that shook up the market and established us as a bold new attitude in the watchmaking world,” states Jordy Cobelens, CEO and co-owner of TW Steel. “Now ten years on it’s only appropriate that we shake the market up again with the launch of a new design icon.” TW Steel Chief Design Officer and co-owner, Ton Cobelens adds: ”Of course our new designs still carry our trademark attitude and boldness, but take a new direction,

perfectly blending our TW Steel style with vintage appeal from the Sport Heritage world. We really enjoyed working with Roderick to bring the Son of Time to life, smashing two worlds together! There we found inspiration to make our Maverick Collection a reality, bringing TW Steel’s unique style and emotion to a new audience.”

Opposites do not attract. They blend together, in clothing and often in the life of every woman. The colours merge into one another and, in apparent contrast, the textures look and feel like one. Rarefied, faded and dusty hues are chosen: interrupting the harmonic sequence through a cascade of optical white, handsful of natural shades and a sparkle of deep yellow that warms up and illuminates the palette. AMSTERDAM: CITY OF CULTURE FINE ART & ANTIQUES Amsterdam offers a diverse array of world-class entertainment, as for centuries has been one of the leading centres of culture in Europe. High-quality culture spread across 65 theatres and concert halls, 42 museums and over 140 galleries. The multitude of theatres, galleries, museums and concert venues put Amsterdam at the very heart of arts and culture in the Netherlands.

EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS (SEE ALSO PAGE 33) Exhibitions and cultural events are being organised in the va-rious towns and villages in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and England that are of importance for the life and work of the artist. For the first time, museums like Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo and institutions that actively contribute to conser-ving Van Gogh’s heritage are working together on a large scale. The Kröller-Müller Museum is a second home to Vincent van Gogh. The museum boasts almost 90 paintings and more than 180 drawings, making it the second largest collection of Van Goghs in the world. In addition, the Museum is home to top works by modern masters including Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondriaan. MUSEUMS Throughout the centuries, the Dutch gave the world most famous painters as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh, who until today provoke our admiration. This tradition continued in the 20th Century with Mondrian and later with the Cobra group abstract artists. Amsterdam art museums have not only unparalleled collection of the most famous, but also many lesser known amazing Dutch masters of all epochs. The State Museum called in Dutch Rijksmuseum, and a wonderful collection of modern art from Europe and America at The City Museum called in Dutch Stedelijk Museum are a must to visit. The principal collection of the world’s beloved painter at the Van Gogh Museum and a rich division of the Russian Hermitage Museum are also not to be mis-

ART GALLERIES Even if you’re not planning to expand your personal art collection, a visit to one of Amsterdam’s many art galleries is a great way to spend an afternoon. Discover what’s new in the Dutch and international art scene! At the corner of Weteringschans and Spiegelgracht you will see the well-known Diamond House Lazare Diamonds on the right in the Museum Plaza building; on the lefthand corner there is Reflex Modern Art Gallery which sells contemporary art. ART/ANTIQUES STORES Spiegelkwartier: Nieuwe Spiegelstraat runs between the world-famous Rijksmuseum and Keizersgracht, its history goes back as far as the 17th century. In and around this street with its many characteristic Amsterdam facades more than 70 art and antique dealers have set up business. These specialists offer a wide range of objects, ranging from Egyptian antiquities which are 6,000 years old to seventeenth-century Delft ware, from antique Chinese porcelain to abstract modern art. You name it, it is for sale in the Spiegelkwartier. This makes the Spiegelkwartier a must-see quarter for those with an eye for the unique, rare and beautiful. ›

SPIEGELKWARTIER If you collect antiques or modern art, the Spiegelkwartier is the place to go. Just across the bridge opposite the Rijksmuseum you will find this historical neighbourhood with its typical old Dutch houses. This area had been the heart of the national art and antiques trade for the past eighty years and has a friendly relaxed atmosphere. There are few places in the world where you will find such a stunning choice of art and antiques. Over seventy specialised art and antique dealers offer a wide variety of objects, ranging from archeological finds to 17th century furniture, glass and Dutch Delftware, from oriental art to Art Nouveau, from tribal art to contemporary art, from old medical instruments and clocks to jewellery and, last but not at least paintings from the COBRA period or finished yesterday. In the Spiegelkwartier you can have a drink or a bite to eat on almost every street corner. A fun way to get to the Spiegelkwartier and the nearby Rijksmuseum, is with the CANAL-BUS. Today one finds fine art and antiques dealers in almost every house in the Nieuwe Spiegelstraat and on the Spiegelgracht. This is the result of a historical development of almost 120 years. Without the building of the renown Rijksmuseum the neighborhood would surely have looked very different. Before the Rijksmuseum was built (1877/1885) there used to be a large windmill on that spot. The existing small business like watchmakers, carpenters, furniture repair shops etc, slowly changed into art and antique dealers. According to old address books the first antique dealer started in 1900 in de Kerkstraat nr 219. In 1910 there are already seven antique shops mentioned. After the war the number of galleries and shops really extended. If one looks at the objects bought by the Rijksmuseum in the Spiegelkwartier one notices that it mainly concerns objects like furniture, glass, textile and earthenware. This is not surprising since the shops were specialized in these antiquities. The proof of a historically grown connection with the Rijksmuseum is

the exhibition in 1985 of a selection of objects bought in the Spiegelkwartier. The first acquisition dates back to 1914 but the museum still buys from dealers in the Spiegelkwartier. A visit to the Spiegelkwartier is easy to combine with a visit to one of many museums in the area. At walking distance you will find the Rijksmuseum, Vincent van Gogh Museum and the Allard Pierson museum. HOW TO GET TO THE SPIEGELKWARTIER Public Transportation - (recommended) From Centraal Station tram nr 1,2 & 5 Leidschestraat, stop Keizersgracht, walk via Keizersgracht in eastern direction. From Centraal Station tram nr 16, 24 & 25 Vijzelstraat, stop Keizersgracht, walk via Keizersgracht in western direction. TILL 15 MAY 2016 Berlage could be considered to be the most important designer in Dutch history. He not only designed the Beurs van Berlage, but also the many exceptional objects and pieces of furniture inside the building. His influence on the appearance of the Netherlands is immense. The building of the former stock exchange is generally seen as the starting point of modern Dutch architecture. Contemporary designers still take inspiration from his work. The exhibition testifies: Berlage’s DNA continues to affect, his design principles are very much alive in contemporary Dutch Design. Berlage, Godfather of Dutch Design showcases authentic pieces of furniture from Berlage hand from the turn of the century.

TILL 31 DECEMBER 2016 Get up close to this remarkable vessel, built in 1816 for King Willem I. Adorned with remarkable decorations and detail, it has taken pride of place at many official Dutch royal events over the centuries, including the inauguration of King Willem-Alexander in Amsterdam in 2013. .

TILL 17 APRIL 2016 Sicily and the sea. A dive into the past. Sicily has been a popular berth for maritime heroes, pirates, ambitious Phoenicians, wine merchants, adventurers, migrants, pioneering Greeks and fishermen for many centuries. It was a place where different cultures and civilisations gathered, and where ideas were exchanged as easily as goods. But the sea gives and the sea takes away. The waters around this beautiful Mediterranean island are strewn with shipwrecks full of secret and extraordinary objects. It is quite literally an invitation to take a dive into history. Over the years, underwater archaeologists have steadily been revealing the sea’s secrets. Hundreds of shipwrecks have been identified and explored.

In short Don Giovanni, the licentious protagonist, is continually misbehaving and sees women as playthings. But he never shows any remorse, even though it costs him his life. In this version of Don Giovanni, the story takes place in a forest at night-time. During his fight with the Commendatore, the Don is mortally wounded and relives the whole drama, while dying a slow death. Or are they hallucinations? And is it suddenly the three women who see him as an object of lust?

15 AND 16 MAY In their new, spectacular performance “Last Work”, choreographer Ohad Naharin and 18 dancers of the Batsheva Dance Company show all the emotions the human body can express in a virtuoso and dazzling way. Anita van Dolen, dance programmer at Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, described the performance as “a piece about outsiders opposite the solidarity of the group. Because of the phenomenal control, the slow-motion and the precision, Naharin is able to create anguish and tension. You’re on the edge of your seat.” - The New York Times: “The piece is breath-taking for the extraordinary dancing by the Batsheva dancers, and the way Mr. Naharin can evoke states of pleasure, pain, madness and a kind of animality – a sheer state of being in the body – through his movement.”

In short Sonia Gaskell, the first artistic director of Dutch National Ballet, already recognised the importance of the work of the Russian-American choreographer in the 1950s. This enabled Dutch National Ballet to develop into the most important European custodian of his ballets. With equal admiration for Balanchine’s mastery, her successors Rudi van Dantzig, Wayne Eagling and Ted Brandsen have also added new Balanchine ballets to the company’s repertoire..

26 MARCH Last century, late fifties. In large parts of America black and white people live segregated lives, but in Carnegie Hall, New York the white elite comes to see a black singer in concert: Billie Holiday. Just before midnight she prepares for what already promises to be a legendary performance. The celebrated star is one of the most influential jazz singers ever, but she can barely hold on in a world full of Mr Wrongs, racism and drugs. Led by hits such as ‘Strange Fruit’, ‘Them There Eyes’ and ‘End of the Affair’ we see Billie with all of her ups and fathomlessly deep downs and how she always managed to hang onto the greatest good in her life, which was music

6 AND 7 APRIL This is the last of four concerts on which the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, under the direction of Iván Fischer and Daniel Harding, is exploring the relationship between Bach and Brahms.

EVERY TUESDAY NIGHT AT 10PM IN THE CAFE Free admission for musicians and visitors. Led by Jasper Blom. In collaboration with the Music Conservatory of Amsterdam.

The Magnificat for five-part chorus, soloists and orchestra (with timpani and trumpets) was Bach’s first major liturgical work set to a Latin text. Brahms was an active contributor to a gradually renewed interest in Bach’s œuvre by programming his works and collaborating on publications issued by the Bach Gesellschaft.

WORKSHOP The Bimhuis workshop is freely accessible to both musicians and audience. All instruments, including vocals, are welcome. Advanced registration is not necessary. Musicians who’d like to follow the workshop are required to be present and ready to play at 8PM. It’s possible to come and listen first without taking part.

24 MARCH Young, fanatical, sexy, musical, confident en sincere. Everything is still open. Jazz, pop gospel, classical. Sometimes fragile, minimal and subdued. Often ecstatic and magnificent. Dekoor is more than a choir, it contains 30 musicians. The inexhaustible drive behind this group is music director Christoph Mac-Carty. Dekoor has been at the top of the global choir scene for years and seeks to innovate itself continuously. This young energy and ambition translates itself into their beaming stage presence. They were selected in 2011 and 2013 as the best vocal group of the Netherlands. In 2010 they won the world championship in the category ‘Jazz’ at the World Choir Games in China. Occupation: thirty singers, drums, piano and bass.

This also had an impact on Brahms’s own compositions. Indeed, it was Bach who helped Brahms shake off the ‘giant’ Beethoven in his First Symphony.

EVERY SATURDAY ENCORE is ‘THE’ hiphop- and r&b club night. Be prepared to get crazy every Saturday, the best tracks, good vibes, best djs, original entertainment and performances – everything is possible at ENCORE. Are you into old school tracks, or rather a early adopter who likes new tunes? At Encore you can expect the whole spectrum of hiphop- and r&b with all its subgenres. Cool beats, classic hits and new tracks! On top of that, ENCORE has a different theme every week. Previous themes include Sweet like Chocolate, All gold everything and Jungle Fever. During ENCORE, you can go on a musical journey with VOYAGE which is held simultaneously in the Oude Zaal.

You can be part of the art and standing next to the wax figures of the biggest ‘masters’ ever lived, like Dutch masters Rembrandt van Rijn, Piet Mondriaan or Vincent van Gogh. The spotlight is also on icons like Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso. The visitor has a big part in this new show.

Stepping into artworks, brushing their own paintings in the domain of rock and roll artist Herman Brood or joining the world famous Mona Lisa in her frame. Just some examples of the many opportunities. With a lot of photo moments, interactive surprises, modern technologies and thrilling details is I Am Art an absolute must-see!

RESTAURANTS | CAFÉS As one might expect from a cosmopolitan city, Amsterdam not only offers the possibility of enjoying classical French cuisine, but since a few decades the city has also abounded in - sometimes surprisingly good - Greek, Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese, Korean and even Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants. This fact has caused the extensive, daily public market in Albert Cuypstraat to adapt its range to the purchasing requirements of these restaurants. For a quick cheap lunchtime bite try the sandwich shops, the chips stands or herring stalls. Eating maatjes (‘mates’) herring is quite possibly the only important culinary tradition of our otherwise in this respect poorly endowed country. Amsterdam is also a city with many bars and cafés, some 1,500 in all. Each of the areas mentioned below has something to offer, from friendly and relaxed brown cafés, stylish grand cafés to crowded designer bars. The cafés and bars vary greatly and have their own special attraction: a wide range of beers, jenever (Dutch gin), live music, canal-side terraces, board games, pool tables or just good old fun. BARS | LIVE MUSIC Amsterdam has some great small bars where you enter for free and or a small fee to listen to live music. Singer-songwriters, jazz, pop, folk or even classical music. You just have to know where to go. COCKTAILS | DINNER The Venice of the North, Amsterdam’s attractions are considerable. Besides the famed red-light areas where window-shopping takes on a whole new meaning and the coffee bars that are more popular for their other wares, Amsterdam is also home to hundreds of great bars and clubs: style bars, cocktail bars, bistros, restaurants and casinos, and the famous brown cafes where you can linger long over a beer and watch the people of Amsterdam go about their business. Once you’ve visited the museum quarter and taken a tour of the canals, you can hit the town. A night out in the many bars of Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein should see you into the small hours.

JORDAAN The most easy-going area of the city hosts a great number of outstanding restaurants and bars, from classical French cuisine, Thai food to Tapas bars. Something can be found to everyone’s taste. REMBRANDTPLEIN Observed by the cast-iron statue of Amsterdam’s most famous painter lies Rembrandtplein. This place is bustling with places to eat and drink. Some of the most beautiful grand cafés are located here, like Schiller withits marvellous art deco interior. UTRECHTSESTRAAT AREA This narrow street has a special atmosphere and is known for its gift shops and international restaurants. Before dining, you can unwind with a drink on a terrace on Rembrandtplein. REGULIERSDWARSSTRAAT As far as gay nightlife is concerned, without a doubt, the Reguliersdwarsstraat is the hippest street in town. However, some of the best restaurants are located here. LEIDSEPLEIN Leidseplein is Amsterdam’s centre of entertainment, with its many bars, nightclubs, theatres, music halls and hotels. Of course there are many different types of restaurants here.

DINNER | CLUBS Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to groove. In Amsterdam you can party all night long, nearly every night of the week! Have a look at the listings below - whether you’re into techno, drum & bass, top 40, hip-hop or anything in between, you’ll find a club to match your mood. ■

Located in four 17th century buildings within the historic NH Barbizon Palace, Restaurant Vermeer is bursting with history and character.

“Using the magic of food to transform lives” At Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen we train our apprentices to become the professional chefs of the future. Come by for an amazing dinner.

Restaurant Vermeer offers a superb dining experience that has ensured the elite of the Dutch capital return again and again. Head Chef Christopher Naylor has created a menu that has delighted critics and led to the restaurant being awarded a Michelin star. Stylish and graceful, the restaurant would have appealed to its namesake, Johannes Vermeer, who, much like the restaurant, was well known for his skill and precision in his craft.

Housed within one of the city’s swankiest hotels, La Rive’s clientele is similar to that of InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam: rock stars, royalty and dignitaries. Getting a table at the Michelin-starred restaurant may not be the easiest task in the world but your patience will be rewarded. Chef De Cuisine Rogér Rassin, Maitre d’ Ronald Opten and Sommelier Ted Bunnik work together to create a perfect dining experience for elite travelers; expect a delectable menu of Mediterranean and French cuisine, a wine list that includes generous vintages to complement any dish, and impeccable service from staff.

You will find 15 motivated apprentices in our kitchen who get the chance to change their life forever. On our menu you will find local, sustainably produced ingredients of the highest quality.

The only two-starred Michelin restaurant in Amsterdam, Ciel Bleu mixes stunning views with delicious dishes to create one of Amsterdam’s finest eateries.

The two Michelin star restaurant is seated on the first floor. Moshik translates his emotions and inspiration, gained at his journeys around the world, into culinary creations. Spectacular in the design is the use of glass: guests have a view over the oldest part of Amsterdam and they can look straight into the kitchen to fully experience Moshik his world.

A restaurant named in honor of a Dutch painter, the Michelin-starred Vinkeles is located in The Dylan hotel that was once a Catholic bakery.

Located on the 23rd floor of the delightful Hotel Okura, the restaurant offers sumptuous fare among elegant surroundings. Chefs Onno Kokmeijer and Arjan Speelman use fresh, locally produced ingredients to create gastronomic masterpieces. Combined with impeccable service, the food on offer is likely to be one of the highlights of your holiday, but remember to book ahead; the restaurant’s popularity means that reservations need to be made well in advance

At &samhoud places you’ll have a special companion: children in SOS Children’s Villages eat along with the restaurant guests. With our donation approximately 100,000 meals can be handed out to children in SOS Children’s Villages. We call this initiative ‘eat and share’.

Indeed, the interior design still has touches of the restaurant’s former life, including the original ovens. Head Chef Dennis Kuipers has created a delightful menu of delicate French cuisine that flirts between classic and contemporary. Many of the city’s elite head to Vinkeles to enjoy the fabulous views over the Keizersgracht, while sampling the fine food on offer.

Bridges, INSPIRED BY RON BLAUW

BRIDGES WAS HERALDED AS ONE OF THE BEST RESTAURANTS IN THE NETHERLANDS. The legendary location, which served as the canteen of the former Town Hall, is now a place where gourmands can savor the culinary skills of Chef de Cuisine Bobby Rust. The style can best be described as a bridge between Dutch and French culinary traditions: fresh fish from Holland, prepared with a French twist. In Bridges, guests can savor the delights of the Restaurant, the Raw Bar, Le Petit Bistro, the Vinothèque and the completely restyled inner garden. Needless to say, the restaurant also caters for vegetarians and people who fancy meat from local Dutch produce. It is a perennial favorite among Amsterdam residents, international (hotel) guests, politicians, business executives and celebrities. Since 2013, Bridges and Michelinstarred chef Ron Blaauw enjoy a unique culinary collaboration. Using innovative international infl uences, Blaauw intends to raise the restaurant to an even higher level in a contemporary manner. The interior design is inspired by the colors and shapes of the original mural, created by the Dutch artist Karel Appel, which graces the entrance and is delightfully open, comfortable and accessible. Service is an integral part of the experience. The sommelier tastes, selects and serves ranges of wine and vintage champagnes he himself has selected in the Vinothèque. The wines and champagnes are stored in a phenomenal wine cellar, which is lovingly and meticulously maintained. Most wines can be ordered per glass. More French infl uences can be found in the grandiose selection of cheese and the opportunity to wine and dine in complete privacy in the Private Dining, which provides pleasant views of the Vinothèque and the historic canal. ■ BRIDGES RESTAURANT Oudezijds Voorburgwal 197, 1012 EX Amsterdam +31 (0) 20 555 3560 info@bridgesrestaurant.nl www.bridgesrestaurant.nl

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ESSENTIAL INFORMATION AND USEFUL TIPS Amsterdam has so much to offer. There are the canals, full of character in every kind of weather. You can take a canal cruise boat and view the seventeenth century houses from the water, or just take a walk. Then there are the museums. Amsterdam is the place to be for Rembrandts, Van Goghs and modern art. The theatres present shows mainly in Dutch off course, but opera and ballet are universal languages. The Spiegelkwartier and P.C. Hooftstraat are rich shopping grounds for fashion, jewellery and antiques. When it comes to food and drink, Amsterdam offers the wide range you would expect of a big city: from little fast food stalls to Michelin-star gourmet restaurants and bars and nightclubs in all sorts and sizes. Whatever your liking, Amsterdam is an exciting city for everyone. We give you some handy facts, figures and customs to make you enjoy your stay even more. LANGUAGE Just about everyone speaks English in Amsterdam. Many people speak German and French too but not as well. A common misconception is that Dutch is similar to German. In truth they are not: Dutch people have to learn German at school, and they generally speak better English than German. The German and Dutch languages are similar in the way that French and Italian are. WEATHER Typically, Dutch weather ranges from slight freezing in the dead of winter, usually with little snow, to pleasantly sunny days of 20 to 30ºC in the summer. Spring and autumn are pleasant. TIME Amsterdam time is one hour ahead of GMT; when daylight saving time is in operation the sun is at its highest point at around 1.40pm (which makes for long evenings: since Amsterdam is very far West in its time zone, a midsummer sky can be light as late as 11 o’clock in the evening). Amsterdam is a late city: many shops don’t open until 10am and bars and cafés stay open till 2am and some even longer.

ELECTRICITY The electricity voltage in the Netherlands was 220 volts, and then moved up at a rate of 1 volt per year to the European standard of 230 volts. TELEPHONING When dialling from abroad, prefix any number you find in this site with +31 (for Holland) and the area code (Except the 0). For example, if you find a number (020) 123 45 67, from abroad you dial 0 20 123 45 67. MONEY There are several different outlets where you can change money in Amsterdam. The best rates are usually offered by the Various GWK offices. Changing money at your hotel is normally more expensive. CREDIT CARDS Credit cards are not as widely accepted here as in many other countries yet, but the situation is improving steadily. Always inquire first if you intend to pay by credit card. You can use Cirrus and Maestro cards to withdraw cash from cash dispensers.
