The greatest Swan Lake in the World With more swans than you can count! Unique collaboration of the Shanghai Ballet and England’s top choreographer Derek Deane The greatest Swan Lake in the world from China will spread her wings this Christmas season. At the initiative of Stardust Theatre, producer of this impressive ballet fest, Derek Deane has rehearsed his version of Swan Lake with the Shanghai Ballet! Instead of 16 swans, this production will bring 48 swans on to the stage. The decision to ask Derek Deane for this task, was an easy one. The dance expert has a great reputation when it comes to creating grand arena productions
with the English National Ballet. His Swan Lake was, amongst other venues, performed in the Royal Albert Hall. The premiere for the Shanghai Ballet took place earlier this year in a sold out Grand Theatre, in Shanghai. It was a sensation, which has already managed to attract more international attention. Derek Deane’s achievement with the 48 Chinese ballerina’s is absolutely magical. With his choreography he has added a beautiful new chapter to Swan Lake, without affecting the authenticity of this ballet classic.
The stunning Chinese ballerina’s form an enchanting, homogenous whole, which in its charisma and perfection are equal to that of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Ballet. Celebrate a magical Christmas with the most beloved ballet in the world from the 23rd until the 30th of December at the RAI Theater in Amsterdam. You can book your tickets by calling 09003311333 (45cpm) or visit our website www.stardusttheatre.org

A Golden Clown Festival 31st World Christmas Circus Carré The most award-winning circus-program ever!
Nowhere is circus more beautiful than in Carré The upcoming “World Christmas Circus” in Royal Theatre Carré from December 17 until January 3rd, will present its most awarded Christmas program ever. Almost every number has received an award at one of the biggest circus festivals in the world in Monte Carlo, Paris, Beijing, Moscow, etc. It is with pride that the “World Christmas Circus” presents Black and White Fantasy, a number from China, which won the Golden Clown in Monte Carlo this year. This act has united superhuman feats with touching beauty.
This “World Christmas Circus” is actually a Golden Clown festival. Together with Black and White Fantasy, the horse number by Florian and Edith Richter was also awarded with the prestigious circus award, just like the fascinating Pas de Deux from North Korea and the Flying Girls: a grand flying trapeze whereby all the jumps are performed by women. There are also two Silver Clown winners in this year’s program: Rosi Hochegger with her comic ‘sleep horse’ Scout and upbeat dog number, and the world’s biggest Icarian games with 19 acrobats from China.
Comedic clowns-act Starbugs and springboard number Baskultoo both won gold at festival Cirque de Demain in Paris. Russian aerialist Anastasia Makeeva was awarded the title of Best Russian Artist (female) of the year. In short, this year’s “World Christmas Circus” unites the best of the best in one program, that certainly lives up to its name! Book your tickets online now at www.carre.nl or call 0900-2525255 (45cpm).

JORDAAN Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. Inthe past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot!
CITY OF AMSTERDAM Where to begin? BY DORIEN TER VELD. That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you we have divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands Museum Quarter, large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops Centre, Nine Streets or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s worldfamous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). SEE MAP ON PAGE 64-65. You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)
9 STRAATJES Not far behind Dam Square, between the well-known ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. FASHION & MUSEUM DISTRICT (see page 20) There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes. OLD TOWN Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. A tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. CITY CENTRE A five-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, you will get to Dam Square. Here you will find the Palace and the National Monument. The large
dove population and street artists also attract the attention. From Dam Square you walk straight into the Walhalla for shopping fanatics. The major store chains are all represented here. REMBRANDTPLEIN Eating, drinking and dancing you do around Rembrandtplein. All year around this is the place to be for dazzling nightlife and in summer the outdoor cafés are crowded. There’s also enough to see and do in the area for people who enjoy the good life. THE PLANTAGE You don’t feel a lot of enthusiasm for the still life works in the Museum Quarter and you don’t feel like shopping or sight-seeing? With its 19th century architecture the Plantage is a greenand quiet part of Amsterdam where there is plenty to do. LEIDSEPLEIN Amsterdam’s most famous, largest and most touristic entertainment area. There are countless restaurants with affordable day specials and outdoor cafés that even have heating when the weather is somewhat cold. Leidseplein is also the epicentre of all kinds of well-known theatres and concert podiums. THE DOCKLANDS In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. ■

Dutch Design
CREATED ON DUTCH SOIL In the twentieth century, Dutch design has evolved. Besides, for instance, architecture and modern dance, design has become another area where the Netherlands excels internationally. As a result, current Dutch graphic design, fashion design, product design, interior design and furniture design are in the spotlight. From the lingerie of Marlies Dekkers, to the costumes of the Harry Potter movies and the interior pieces of Marcel Wanders; they have all been created on Dutch soil. TYPICAL DUTCH DESIGN Dutch design is characterised by simplicity and clarity. It is often described using terms such as down-to-earthness, sense of humour and perspective and surprising, smart design. These characteristics are the result of creativity in an open, tolerant society. Functionalism has long been the leading ideology behind Dutch design and worked well with the Calvinist attitude of the Dutch. At the start of the twentieth century, the Netherlands became famous by the works of the members of ‘De Stijl’ artistic movement, with artists such as Mondrian and Rietveld. In the nineties, a new artistic trend developed. Functionality of the product no longer came first; the concept behind the design took centre stage. Design became less of an artisanal and more of an artistic discipline. As part of this international trend, the emphasis shifted more towards artistic aspects such as concept and originality and away from production and user requirements. In the process, designers such as Tord Boontje and Viktor & Rolf shift with ease between commercial and artistic considerations. In this sense, Dutch design is at the forefront. AMSTERDAM From designer shopping to a glamorous fashion week, Amsterdam has a fashionable centre just waiting to be discovered. Amsterdam is a source of inspiration for stylish individuals. Even if your budget prevents you from shopping for exclusive high-end designs, there are plenty of more affordable ways to soak up Amsterdam’s fashionable vibe. A lot of the Dutch Designers have choosen Amsterdam, in the Fashion & Museum district you will find the Dutch Designers: Fred de la Bretonière, Pauw and The People of the Labyrinths. When you are interested in Haute Couture visit the designers Mart Visser en Frans Molenaar. You will find other Dutch Designers throughout of Amsterdam like the international well known Designers Viktor & Rolf , Jan Jansen Shoes, Tony Cohen, Sheila de Vries and Marlies Dekkers, young talented designers such as Dennis Diem and Dorhout Mees are also Amsterdambased fashion houses. Dutch brands: G-Star RAW, Claudia Strater, Gaastra, Gsus Industries, Scotch & Soda and Supertrash. ■

For the inside scoop on the diamond industry plus an opportunity to shop, pay a visit to Gassan or Coster Diamonds. You’ll find a number of small specialty jewellers on the shopping streets listed above, but for big names like Bvlgari, Cartier or Tiffany & Co, head straight to the P.C. Hooftstraat. ■

FILIPPA K STYLE SIMPLICITY QUALITY
Filippa K was founded in 1993, by Filippa Knutsson and Patrik Kihlborg. Their interpretation of fashion was wearable, aesthetically balanced pieces that stand the test of time – effortless, essential garments with clean design and high quality. This is still the essence of our brand. Effortless yet fashionable garments with a clean design and high quality. Essential pieces to build a perfect wardrobe around, and long-lasting in both style and quality. That was the start of Filippa K in 1 9 9 3 and is still the essence of our brand today. The brand philosophy of Filippa K is built on three core values: S tyle S implicity Q uality. These brand values lead us in ex pressing our brand, in how we do business, in defining our store concept, in communication, in how we meet our customers, and of course how we design our collections. The W omen’ s wear A utumn W inter 2 0 1 5 collection continues to evolve the effortless Filippa K style and presents a look that combines a contemporary take on 7 0 ’ s cool with inspiration from the works of Henri R ousseau. For A utumn W inter 2 0 1 5 Filippa K ex plores the mystic ambiance of Henri R ousseau’ s paintings – a world that is rich in colour and naturalistic in its ex pression. The search for an artisanal mood to contrast Filippa K ’ s long lasting and simple style resulted in materials that are rich in structure and decoration. A
continuation of recent seasons quest to ex plore the style needs of the modern urban man, the A utumn W inter 2 0 1 5 collection digs deeper into modern tailoring and contemporary functionalism for sharp dressing around the clock. The collection presents updated essentials alongside new styles. The look is decidedly urban with reoccurring sport, street and military r eferences subtly challenging the modern minimal DN A of the Filippa K Man style. AMSTERDAM: CITY OF CULTURE FINE ART & ANTIQUES Amsterdam offers a diverse array of world-class entertainment, as for centuries has been one of the leading centres of culture in Europe. High-quality culture spread across 65 theatres and concert halls, 42 museums and over 140 galleries. The multitude of theatres, galleries, museums and concert venues put Amsterdam at the very heart of arts and culture in the Netherlands.
EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS (SEE ALSO PAGE 33) Exhibitions and cultural events are being organised in the va-rious towns and villages in the Netherlands, B elgium, France and England that are of importance for the life and work of the artist. For the first time, museums like K rö ller-Mü ller Museum in O tterlo and institutions that actively contribute to conser-ving V an G ogh’s heritage are working together on a large scale. The K rö ller-Mü ller Museum is a second home to V incent van G ogh. The museum boasts almost 90 paintings and more than 18 0 drawings, making it the second largest collection of V an G oghs in the world. In addition, the Museum is home to top works by modern masters including Claude Monet, G eorges Seurat, Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondriaan. MUSEUMS Throughout the centuries, the Dutch gave the world most famous painters as Rembrandt, V ermeer and V an G ogh, who until today provoke our admiration. This tradition continued in the 2 0 th Century with Mondrian and later with the Cobra group abstract artists. Amsterdam art museums have not only unparalleled collection of the most famous, but also many lesser known amazing Dutch masters of all epochs. The State Museum called in Dutch Rijksmuseum, and a wonderful collection of modern art from Europe and America at The City Museum called in Dutch Stedelijk Museum are a must to visit. The principal collection of the world’s beloved painter at the V an G ogh Museum and a rich division of the Russian Hermitage Museum are also not to be missed, even if you are in the Dutch capital for a brief visit.
ART GALLERIES Even if you’re not planning to expand your personal art collection, a visit to one of Amsterdam’s many art galleries is a great way to spend an afternoon. Discover what’s new in the Dutch and international art scene! At the corner of Weteringschans and Spiegelgracht you will see the well-known Diamond House Lazare Diamonds on the right in the Museum Plaza building; on the lefthand corner there is Refl ex Modern Art G allery which sells contemporary art. ART/ANTIQUES STORES Spiegelkwartier: Nieuwe Spiegelstraat runs between the world-famous Rijksmuseum and K eizersgracht, its history goes back as far as the 17 th century. In and around this street with its many characteristic Amsterdam facades more than 7 0 art and antique dealers have set up business. These specialists offer a wide range of objects, ranging from Egyptian antiquities which are 6 ,0 0 0 years old to seventeenth-century Delft ware, from antique Chinese porcelain to abstract modern art. You name it, it is for sale in the Spiegelkwartier. This makes the Spiegelkwartier a must-see quarter for those with an eye for the unique, rare and beautiful. ›

SPIEGELKWARTIER If you collect antiques or modern art, the Spiegelkwartier is the place to go. Just across the bridge opposite the Rijksmuseum you will find this historical neighbourhood with its typical old Dutch houses. This area had been the heart of the national art and antiques trade for the past eighty years and has a friendly relaxed atmosphere. There are few places in the world where you will find such a stunning choice of art and antiques. O ver seventy specialised art and antique dealers offer a wide variety of objects, ranging from archeological finds to 17 th century furniture, glass and Dutch Delftware, from oriental art to Art Nouveau, from tribal art to contemporary art, from old medical instruments and clocks to jewellery and, last but not at least paintings from the CO B RA period or finished yesterday. In the Spiegelkwartier you can have a drink or a bite to eat on almost every street corner. A fun way to get to the Spiegelkwartier and the nearby Rijksmuseum, is with the CANAL-B U S. Today one finds fine art and antiques dealers in almost every house in the Nieuwe Spiegelstraat and on the Spiegelgracht. This is the result of a historical development of almost 12 0 years. Without the building of the renown Rijksmuseum the neighborhood would surely have looked very different. B efore the Rijksmuseum was built (18 7 7 / 18 8 5 ) there used to be a large windmill on that spot. The existing small business like watchmakers, carpenters, furniture repair shops etc, slowly changed into art and antique dealers. According to old address books the first antique dealer started in 190 0 in de K erkstraat nr 2 19. In 1910 there are already seven antique shops mentioned. After the war the number of galleries and shops really extended. If one looks at the objects bought by the Rijksmuseum in the Spiegelkwartier one notices that it mainly concerns objects like furniture, glass, textile and earthenware. This is not surprising since the shops were specialized in these antiquities. The proof of a historically grown connection with the Rijksmuseum is
the exhibition in 198 5 of a selection of objects bought in the Spiegelkwartier. The first acquisition dates back to 1914 but the museum still buys from dealers in the Spiegelkwartier. A visit to the Spiegelkwartier is easy to combine with a visit to one of many museums in the area. At walking distance you will find the Rijksmuseum, V incent van G ogh Museum and the Allard Pierson museum. HOW TO GET TO THE SPIEGELKWARTIER Public Transportation - (recommended) From Centraal Station tram nr 1,2 & 5 Leidschestraat, stop K eizersgracht, walk via K eizersgracht in eastern direction. What’s the best time to visit Amsterdam and its green backyard De Veluwe? That depends of course on what you’re looking for. Springtime is bright and colourful in Amsterdam. In summer it buzzes with all sorts of outdoors activities and festivals. In autumn or winter, as the leaves are blown from the trees, Amsterdam’s beautiful gables reappear in their full glory from behind the foliage.

TILL 24 JANUARY 2016 It will show how Amsterdam graffiti artists (‘ writers’) like Shoe and Delta were infl uenced by American artists like Lee Q uiñ ones, Dondi and Rammellzee in the 198 0s. The 1970s, being the time when Dr. Rat and Hugo Kaagman were active in the city. It will use historic visual material and objects like denim jackets and black books to chart the development of graffiti from a street phenomenon to an accepted artistic movement. It will also shed light on the difference between graffiti and street art. The exhibition will show how a young generation was able to change the street scene 30 years ago. Their infl uence is still very much evident today, in music, fashion and contemporary visual culture.
TILL 7 FEBRUARY Art Treasures from the Eternal City. Loaned by institutions such as the Vatican Museums these will illustrate one of the most fascinating themes from antiq uity: the transformation of Rome in the fourth century AD from a multi-religious imperial capital full of temples with colossal statues of the emperor into the centre of papal power dominated by churches with crosses. Christianity’s evolution in a relatively short time from a small faith community into the dominant religion, of crucial infl uence on the development of the Western world, is an astonishing success story. A rapid change in its fortunes that can largely be attributed to a single person: Emperor Constantine the Great.
TILL 17 JANUARY The exhibition When I Give, I Give Myself features 23 national and international contemporary artists and writers who have all created artworks in response to specific sections from letters by Vincent van Gogh. Their paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, letters, poems, photos and videos show how Van Gogh is still a source of inspiration until this very day, 125 years since his death, and that his ideas are still relevant. The works will be exhibited in combination with Van Gogh’s paintings, drawings and letters from the permanent collection of the Van Gogh Museum.

13 MARCH On 16 October The Sixties A Worldwide Happening exhibition opens in the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam. The exhibition offers a global view of the 1960s, an era when globalization as we know it first appeared. Visitors will be surprised by the trans-border connections which have never been presented in this way before.
TILL 29 MAY 2016 With more than sixty superior paintings and a rich collection of graphic works and applied arts masterpieces. Never before has the Netherlands hosted such a comprehensive survey of Spanish art, with work that is hardly represented in Dutch museum collections. The exhibition features masterpieces such as The Apostles Peter and Paul by El Greco, Velá zq uez’s Portrait of the Count Duke of Olivares, Murillo’sImmaculate Conception and Goya’s Portrait of the Actress Antonia Zá rate, in addition to paintings by their pupils and later painters, up and including Picasso. Together they tell the story of the rise and glory of Spanish art in the Golden Age, which would continue to infl uence art into modern times..
12 FEB TILL 16 MAY 2016 An exhibition about drawing nude models in Rembrandt’s time. Based on new research, Rembrandt’s Naked Truth features seventeenth-century nude studies that have never before been brought together in such large numbers. It will be the first time that Rembrandt’s frank approach to drawing nudes will be examined in depth and brought to the notice of a wide audience.
TILL 6 MARCH 2016 By 2050, 70% of the world’s population – more than seven billion people – will be living in crowded cities, according to the U N. Many will be living in ‘ megacities’, which the U N defines as cities having more than 10 million inhabitants. Martin Roemers (1962, Oldehove) wondered how people actually lived in such immense and bustling cities, and in 2007 he started travelling all over the world to photograph them. Of the 28 megacities in the world today Roemers has so far photographed 22, across five continents, which together form a representative image of ‘ the megacity’. And what an image it is! Roemers succeeds in capturing the uniq ue dynamism of each of these cities in a single photograph.
Rembrandt’s Naked Truth will showcase more than fifty objects from a number of European and American public and private collections, augmented by a selection of Rembrandt’s etchings from the Rembrandt House’s collection. The drawings, prints and paintings are extremely rare.

17 MARCH TILL MAY 1 2016 Amaluna is the 33rd production of Cirque du Soleil, written and directed by renowned director Diane Paulus who has received a Tony Award for one of her previous shows. It takes the audience to a mysterious island, governed by goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. The main character in Amaluna is Prospera. Her daughter is coming of age and to honour this, Prospera organizes a ceremony in which femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance are honoured. Amaluna is a combination of the words ama, that means ‘mother’ in many languages, and luna meaning ‘moon’. It symbolizes the mother-daughter relationship and is a homage to all women on this world.
20, 21, 22, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29 & 30 JANUARY, 2, 3, 4 & 5 FEBRUARY 2016. With English surtitles on 21 & 28 January, 4 February 2016 The hidden force (De stille kracht) is a visionary novel that places western culture opposite eastern culture as being irreconcilable. The powerful Dutch colonizer is unable to deal with the hidden force that is present in the background and is slowly causing damage. The Western man dominates and controls, but turns out to be unable to get to the core of the East and conquer the culture of the Indies. What is left is a powerless western man in the Indian forest.
25 TILL 30 JANUARY Impro theatre is a popular, spontaneous theatrical form which relies on characters, plot lines, and dialogue being created on the spot. With no rehearsals and storylines developed with the assistance of the audience, each performance is sure to be original. This element of spontaneity is what allows for hilarious interjections and moments of comedic gold.
FROM 17 FEBRUARY The Deutsches SchauSpielHaus Hamburg will be visiting Amsterdam in order to fill all the theatre’s performance spaces with riveting productions, themed evenings, short performances, topical debates and parties.
Each year, IMPRO Amsterdam invites the best impro actors from all over the world to showcase their talent. This year’s ensemble consists of actors from Canada, Australia, the USA, Italy, Germany and The Netherlands. This year’s festival programme is filled with a lot of extra shows, workshops, and events to highlight the art of impro theatre. .
The Deutsches SchauSpielHaus Hamburg is Germany’s largest city theatre. Their home base is one of Germany’s most beautiful theatres, with space for twelve hundred audience members. Their performances are high quality and appeal to a broad public, but are also daring, committed and engaged. German spoken with Dutch Surtitles

26 MARCH Last century, late fifties. In large parts of America black and white people live segregated lives, but in Carnegie Hall, New Y ork the white elite comes to see a black singer in concert: Billie Holiday. J ust before midnight she prepares for what already promises to be a legendary performance. The celebrated star is one of the most infl uential jazz singers ever, but she can barely hold on in a world full of Mr Wrongs, racism and drugs. Led by hits such as ‘ Strange Fruit’, ‘ Them There Eyes’ and ‘ End of the Affair’ we see Billie with all of her ups and fathomlessly deep downs and how she always managed to hang onto the greatest good in her life, which was music
12 TILL 14 FEBRUARY This edition will take place in the Rhone Congress & Party Centre in Amsterdam West, near to Sloterdijk Station. This venue, with a 2500+ capacity is a perfect location to host the various workshops, shows and parties all weekend. A big advantage is the proximity of Schiphol, three big hotels at walking distance, good accessibility by public transport and free parking during the weekend. Major headliner this year are Tropical Gem and Adolfo Indacochea from Italy. Tropical Gem has been salsa’s number one group for the last 15 years and Adolfo Indacochea is considered the master of New Y ork On2 salsa.
23 TILL 24 JANUARY The Amsterdams Bach Consort will perform the program: “ Stabat Mater” – Bach in Italy. Tilge, Hö chster, meine Sü nden, BWV 108 3 (“ Cancel, Highest my Sins” ), is Bach’s arrangement of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater. Bach used psalm 51 as text for his composition, slightly expanding the orchestral material. Emanuele d’Astorga was one of the most colourful figures in early eighteenth-century music. His most enduring work is his 9 movement Stabat mater. Tinged with melancholy, it features ornate solos, duets, and trios interspersed between beautiful imitative moments for full chorus.
22 JANUARY As musical director of J ames Brown’s band the J B’s, trombonist Fred Wesley was the most famous ‘ sideman’ of the sixties and seventies. He arranged all J ames Brown songs, wrote hits like ‘ Hot Pants’ and ‘ Doing it to Death (We’re Gonna Have A Funky Good Time)’ and became known as one of the architects of funk music. Decades after his work with J ames Brown and George Clinton, Fred Wesley has started a new project taking him back to his jazz-roots: Generations. Generations is a jazz trio represented by three generations of jazz musicians: Fred Wesley (70), French drummer Tony Match (42) and young Italian organist Leonardo Corradi (21).

Barbara Hepworth in Kröller-Müller: a must see! 28.11.2015 – 17.04.2016 Still from Figures in landscape, 1953, director Dudley Shaw Ashton, BFI National Archive
The Kröller-Müller Museum honours Barbara Hepworth (Wakefield 1903-St Ives 1975) with a major retrospective, fifty years after her last major exhibition in 1965. Barbara Hepworth is one of the most successful sculptors of the twentieth century. Barbara Hepworth: Sculpture for a Modern World follows Hepworth’s career, from the stone sculptures of her early years to her later, celebrated bronze pieces. The exhibition includes exceptional, never previously shown works, such as fabric designs, drawings, collages and photograms. Extensive film and photographic material from Hepworth’s personal archive shows the context in which her work was created. The long and special relationship between the Kröller-Müller Museum and Barbara Hepworth is visible to this day in the Rietveld pavilion in the sculpture garden. Hepworth selected eight of her sculptures especially for this famous pavilion by architect Gerrit Rietveld. The pavilion is part of the exhibition as an ‘outdoor gallery’.
Barbara Hepworth, Squares with two circles, 1963 – 1964, Kröller-Müller Museum
A paradise for art lovers The Kröller-Müller Museum is a place where things of beauty come together. The unique combination of art, nature and architecture guarantees visitors a truly unforgettable experience. An experience that arouses all the senses. The museum is a paradise for both seasoned art lovers and objective newcomers. With almost 400,000 visitors a year, the Kröller-Müller Museum is one of the most popular museums in the Netherlands. 25-hectare outdoor gallery The museum is set in one of Europe’s largest sculpture gardens. An outdoor gallery covering 25 hectares, in which modern sculptures blend into the natural background. The garden serves as a backdrop for more than 160 sculptures by prominent artists, from Auguste Rodin to Henry Moore, and from Jean Dubuff et to Joep van Lieshout.

RESTAURANTS | CAFÉS As one might expect from a cosmopolitan city, Amsterdam not only offers the possibility of enjoying classical French cuisine, but since a few decades the city has also abounded in - sometimes surprisingly good - Greek, Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese, Korean and even Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants. This fact has caused the extensive, daily public market in Albert Cuypstraat to adapt its range to the purchasing requirements of these restaurants. For a quick cheap lunchtime bite try the sandwich shops, the chips stands or herring stalls. Eating maatjes (‘mates’) herring is quite possibly the only important culinary tradition of our otherwise in this respect poorly endowed country. Amsterdam is also a city with many bars and cafés, some 1,500 in all. Each of the areas mentioned below has something to offer, from friendly and relaxed brown cafés, stylish grand cafés to crowded designer bars. The cafés and bars vary greatly and have their own special attraction: a wide range of beers, jenever (Dutch gin), live music, canal-side terraces, board games, pool tables or just good old fun. BARS | LIVE MUSIC Amsterdam has some great small bars where you enter for free and or a small fee to listen to live music. Singer-songwriters, jazz, pop, folk or even classical music. You just have to know where to go. COCKTAILS | DINNER The Venice of the North, Amsterdam’s attractions are considerable. Besides the famed red-light areas where window-shopping takes on a whole new meaning and the coffee bars that are more popular for their other wares, Amsterdam is also home to hundreds of great bars and clubs: style bars, cocktail bars, bistros, restaurants and casinos, and the famous brown cafes where you can linger long over a beer and watch the people of Amsterdam go about their business. Once you’ve visited the museum quarter and taken a tour of the canals, you can hit the town. A night out in the many bars of Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein should see you into the small hours.
JORDAAN The most easy-going area of the city hosts a great number of outstanding restaurants and bars, from classical French cuisine, Thai food to Tapas bars. Something can be found to everyone’s taste. REMBRANDTPLEIN Observed by the cast-iron statue of Amsterdam’s most famous painter lies Rembrandtplein. This place is bustling with places to eat and drink. Some of the most beautiful grand cafés are located here, like Schiller withits marvellous art deco interior. UTRECHTSESTRAAT AREA This narrow street has a special atmosphere and is known for its gift shops and international restaurants. Before dining, you can unwind with a drink on a terrace on Rembrandtplein. REGULIERSDWARSSTRAAT As far as gay nightlife is concerned, without a doubt, the Reguliersdwarsstraat is the hippest street in town. However, some of the best restaurants are located here. LEIDSEPLEIN Leidseplein is Amsterdam’s centre of entertainment, with its many bars, nightclubs, theatres, music halls and hotels. Of course there are many different types of restaurants here.
DINNER | CLUBS Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to groove. In Amsterdam you can party all night long, nearly every night of the week! Have a look at the listings below - whether you’re into techno, drum & bass, top 40, hip-hop or anything in between, you’ll find a club to match your mood. ■

Located in four 17th century buildings within the historic NH Barbizon Palace, Restaurant Vermeer is bursting with history and character.
“Using the magic of food to transform lives” At Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen we train our apprentices to become the professional chefs of the future. Come by for an amazing dinner.
Restaurant Vermeer offers a superb dining experience that has ensured the elite of the Dutch capital return again and again. Head Chef Christopher Naylor has created a menu that has delighted critics and led to the restaurant being awarded a Michelin star. Stylish and graceful, the restaurant would have appealed to its namesake, Johannes Vermeer, who, much like the restaurant, was well known for his skill and precision in his craft.
Housed within one of the city’s swankiest hotels, La Rive’s clientele is similar to that of InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam: rock stars, royalty and dignitaries. Getting a table at the Michelin-starred restaurant may not be the easiest task in the world but your patience will be rewarded. Chef De Cuisine Rogér Rassin, Maitre d’ Ronald Opten and Sommelier Ted Bunnik work together to create a perfect dining experience for elite travelers; expect a delectable menu of Mediterranean and French cuisine, a wine list that includes generous vintages to complement any dish, and impeccable service from staff.
You will find 15 motivated apprentices in our kitchen who get the chance to change their life forever. On our menu you will find local, sustainably produced ingredients of the highest quality.

The only two-starred Michelin restaurant in Amsterdam, Ciel Bleu mixes stunning views with delicious dishes to create one of Amsterdam’s finest eateries.
The two Michelin star restaurant is seated on the first floor. Moshik translates his emotions and inspiration, gained at his journeys around the world, into culinary creations. Spectacular in the design is the use of glass: guests have a view over the oldest part of Amsterdam and they can look straight into the kitchen to fully experience Moshik his world.
A restaurant named in honor of a Dutch painter, the Michelin-starred Vinkeles is located in The Dylan hotel that was once a Catholic bakery.
Located on the 23rd floor of the delightful Hotel Okura, the restaurant offers sumptuous fare among elegant surroundings. Chefs Onno Kokmeijer and Arjan Speelman use fresh, locally produced ingredients to create gastronomic masterpieces. Combined with impeccable service, the food on offer is likely to be one of the highlights of your holiday, but remember to book ahead; the restaurant’s popularity means that reservations need to be made well in advance
At &samhoud places you’ll have a special companion: children in SOS Children’s Villages eat along with the restaurant guests. With our donation approximately 100,000 meals can be handed out to children in SOS Children’s Villages. We call this initiative ‘eat and share’.
Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen is established in an old warehouse with great atmosphere. In 2015 we celebrate our tenth anniversary.
Indeed, the interior design still has touches of the restaurant’s former life, including the original ovens. Head Chef Dennis Kuipers has created a delightful menu of delicate French cuisine that flirts between classic and contemporary. Many of the city’s elite head to Vinkeles to enjoy the fabulous views over the Keizersgracht, while sampling the fine food on offer.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ESSENTIAL INFORMATION AND USEFUL TIPS A msterdam has so much to offer. There are the canals, full of character in ev ery kind of weather. Y ou can take a canal cruise boat and v iew the sev enteenth century houses from the water, or just take a walk. Then there are the museums. A msterdam is the place to be for Rembrandts, V an G oghs and modern art. The theatres present shows mainly in Dutch off course, but opera and ballet are univ ersal languages. The Spiegelkwartier and P .C . H ooftstraat are rich shopping grounds for fashion, jewellery and antiques. W hen it comes to food and drink, A msterdam offers the wide range you would expect of a big city: from little fast food stalls to M ichelin- star gourmet restaurants and bars and nightclubs in all sorts and siz es. W hatev er your liking, A msterdam is an exciting city for ev eryone. W e giv e you some handy facts, figures and customs to make you enjoy your stay ev en more. LANGUAGE Just about everyone speaks English in Amsterdam. Many people speak German and French too but not as well. A common misconception is that Dutch is similar to German. In truth they are not: Dutch people have to learn German at school, and they generally speak better English than German. The German and Dutch languages are similar in the way that French and Italian are. WEATHER Typically, Dutch weather ranges from slight freezing in the dead of winter, usually with little snow, to pleasantly sunny days of 20 to 30ºC in the summer. Spring and autumn are pleasant. TIME Amsterdam time is one hour ahead of GMT; when daylight saving time is in operation the sun is at its highest point at around 1.40pm (which makes for long evenings: since Amsterdam is very far West in its time zone, a midsummer sky can be light as late as 11 o’clock in the evening). Amsterdam is a late city: many shops don’t open until 10am and bars and cafés stay open till 2am and some even longer.
ELECTRICITY The electricity voltage in the Netherlands was 220 volts, and then moved up at a rate of 1 volt per year to the European standard of 230 volts. TELEPHONING When dialling from abroad, prefix any number you find in this site with +31 (for Holland) and the area code (Except the 0). For example, if you find a number (020) 123 45 67, from abroad you dial 0 20 123 45 67. MONEY There are several different outlets where you can change money in Amsterdam. The best rates are usually offered by the Various GWK offices. Changing money at your hotel is normally more expensive. CREDIT CARDS Credit cards are not as widely accepted here as in many other countries yet, but the situation is improving steadily. Always inquire first if you intend to pay by credit card. You can use Cirrus and Maestro cards to withdraw cash from cash dispensers.
